Reading devRant feed is so fucking hard nowadays. Every other rant is about Windows rebooting, Google being evil, Quantum beating Chrome, M$ users being cunts and all these fanboy shits.
Fucking hell. Write some actual code and rant about some solid problems rather than being a stupid fanboy.12
To all developers who think "I don't need to delete that one 1KB temp file"
You are not the only garbage developer who does not clean his shit up. The reason we need TERA FUCKING BYTE storage devices nowadays is because you incompetent shit heads have no idea how an application has to properly work. A temp file is not there to exist for ever. HENCE THE FUCKING WORD TEMPORARY20
Do you remember the old days, when a webpage was just a webpage with the information you wanted on it..
Nowadays, its like this:37
Somehow I feel like I personally owe Linus for git.
17:50 Colleague whispers "fuck" and the entire project we've worked on for the last half year responds with 404.
17:55 A quick diagnosis shows that she wrote "rm - rf ../" instead of "./" when she threw out her staging dir an thereby deleted everything.
17:58 git pull, everything is back.
18:15 everything is configured and we're up and running again.
**Alternative Timeline without Version control **
17:58 We start looking through Backup folders
18:20 We're fairly confident to have found the most up to date Backup in /var/backup/newback/v2/june/new/released/ and start copying back into the project directory.
19:30 Some files are missing we start patching shit up.
19:40 I realize how much work went down the drain and start strangling my colleague. The Api seems to do the most important things again.
20:00 My colleagues dead body is hidden and I'm 80% confident that the tasks depending on us should run.
Next day: They didn't run. Every nightly build failed, nobody can do anything useful.
A week later : Shits starting to work again, all lost files are replaced. Replacement for dead colleague still missing though.
It's moments like this that make you really appreciate the luxurys we have nowadays...5
Python. Changed a function to return a tuple instead of one value in some database code. Tests pass, gets deployed, everything works. End of the month comes. Suddenly, we get a report that we're draining people's bank accounts and credit cards.
It turns out there was an untested bit of code inside the billing process that used this function. It used the function that was changed. To make matters worse, when the exception was thrown, the billing had already completed successfully, and due to another unrelated bug it would retry despite this.
So, needless to say, type safety and good unit tests are things I prioritize nowadays.7
Jesus fucking christ, entering w3schools.com (don't ask) and I immediately get a cookie consent thing shoved in my face.
WHY?! Please don't tell me it's so I can get the 'best experience' because that's straight out bullshit. I don't need cookies and you fucking name it to get 'the best fucking experience' while looking up again how that one PHP or HTML or CSS or WHAT-THE-FUCK-EVER thing worked.
E-v-e-r-y GODDAMN site has this nowadays, to 'improve my experience' - I block ads anyways so what's the motherfucking point?!
Mother of FUCKING god.
Education courses nowadays be like,
- Website Development Course @ $49.99
- Security in website Development @ $45.99
Combo offer @ $60.99
=> Hurry up, LIMITED PERIOD OFFER!!!!!
// Like for real??? Why don't you include Security in website Dev course, it's a part of it.6
Boss: we are going to build a blockchain. ( he is smiling proudly)
Me: we are doing data visualization boss!!! Why we need the blockchain?!?!?
Boss: I am disappointed in you!!! You don’t read any Tech news or follow the market trends? BlockChain is tending nowadays... ( showing angry emoji using his face)
Me: it is not related to our work by anything!!! What we will visualize? A success of the transition? The amount of it? A visualization of the nodes?
Boss: (shouting) there are a lot of opportunities using the BlockChain in our days, and it is critical to our business...
Me: boss, there many opportunities using the ******* BlockChain, and I am leaving this company by the end of the month... find a ******* BlockChain developer to visualize the ******* process...
Boss: ........ (silence)
Me: .... (already resigned)7
Most of the code I write nowadays is for GPUs using a dialect of C. Anyways, due to the hardware of GPUs there is no convenient debugger and you can't just print to console neither.
Most bugs are solved staring at the code and using pen and paper.
I guess one could call that a quirk.12
Companies can't use free software?
Well, I just forced everyone to use Nextcloud instead of Dropbox and Google Drive. People did not like it as first but the quickly realized how good it was.
We also moved from skype, teams and slack to matrix.
I am glad that matrix-synapse is so easy to install nowadays!19
My mother used to code a good 30 years ago (embedded development for plane engines), but nowadays always fear doing something wrong on her computer/smartphone.
It's a bit depressing to see how someone who used to be a developer is now so fearful of computers.
On the plus side, she is very respective of my time, and will wait 2/3 weeks for me to come home to fix a simple thing, and generally don't bother me with things she can do herself, once I explain to her how to do it.
Last time was cleaning laptop fans. Seeing how you need to disassemble half of it to clean that, I can understand anyone not wanting to do it.7
Why can't you just start writing native software again? Why does every program need its own fucking browser engine and at least 200MB of RAM to do nothing but show and edit text?
I want to have fast and streamlined software again and use my resources for important things. So much software that is called fast or lightweight isn't either. It's just a little less heavy and slow than the software it tries to replace.
I don't use C all the time, but maybe looking into Qt instead of electron might be a start.
I had a project where I could convince my tutors to let me use C++ instead of JS and they were surprised how fast my application started even though it only consisted only of a empty window with a status bar. How far have we come that we even need to think about performance when opening an empty window on modern hardware?21
Juniors nowadays are so lazy.
J: How to do X?
M: Did you try google this?
J: No I thought you will give me a solution
Thanks God there will be no competition for me in the future...18
Not sure what triggers me more:
a) the fact that nowadays no one can type/spell without auto-correct
b) that this passed code review
c) that no one corrected it in 12 months since it's been committed23
Are you fucking serious! 😈😈😈
Is this what a Junior Dev nowadays needs to know to be a successful candidate?14
"Enigma machine kep private the communications done by Nazi. It was a really difficult code to break because it changed each day. There was a man in England, Alan Turing, who broke it. He's nowadays known as one of the fathers of the Computer Science. I will show in the next lessons how you can simulate Enigma coder just with an easy C program of 60-70 lines. In the WW2 this was considered a military-level safe code. Thanks to mathematicians, computer scientist and analyst and thanks to their work in the last 60 year, you have access to a systems of several orders of magnitude more efficient and secure when you buy a videogame online."
That really fucking inspired me.8
I look at this nowadays so often during office just that I don't quit this fucking job all because of work load and dumbass and asshole manager4
Lecturer talking about a great, strong technology whole 2 hours, in the end of lecture he said :
"But this technology is too old to use nowadays."5
Hot take: PHP is pretty good nowadays.
I'm a Laravel dev right now and things just get done so quickly. Every language has its problems but the meme of PHP hate seems to be made more out of ignorance these days. You could find just as many problems with any other language.
For those that say I'm biased because I work through the framework more than the language, I'd ask don't you do the same? ASP.NET, Java EE, the millions of JS frameworks, all these also make your life easier within their languages.
In the end, work with what makes you happy and productive and be done with it.17
Last year I applied for a similar position to that I have now (Front-end Dev), but with a higher salary and less responsibility.
The interview went fairly well I thought, but I was also given a short written exam, where I was supposed to point out errors in the code provided. I'm certain I got everything right but I took too long (about 20 minutes for 20 questions) and they got inpatient pressing me several times.
My excuse was that I haven't used a pen in about 3 years. My hand didn't know what was happening! Who even writes anything anymore nowadays?!6
I FUCKING HATE PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS BUY NEW STUFF WHEN THEIR OLD THINGS WORK PERFECTLY FINE!
FFS PEOPLE ARE JUST FUCKING PIECES OF SHIT NOWADAYS! I MEAN, FIRST THEYRE LIKE, oh we need to save the planet bla bla.... THEN THEIR LIKE!
OMFG! NEW IPHONE X WOLOLO MUST HAVE! OMG MY OLD PHONE IS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE BUT ITS THE NEW IPHONE OMG!
I MEAN! COME FUCKING ON! WHAT IDIOTS! IF ITS WORKING, KEEP IT!
Is it just me or has the quality of AAA games declined substantially? Feels like every “good” game nowadays is a remake of another one.12
One popular repository on github nowadays is this :
A repository filled with eeees .
This is excellent for anyone new to git and who needs a repo to get familiar with git.
Just make sure it's all eees XD7
WTF is going on in web development nowadays that makes people ask me to compile C# projects to Electron?
Let that sink. I'm being asked to compile a C# project that can run as a beautifully integrated seamless *native* and lightning fast application... to JS so it would run as a *website* in the Electron *browser*. Am I the only one seeing how much cancer that is?10
I don't know what Google's design team has taken for drugs lately, but I want some!!
First, replacement of the blobs into this trash that they call emoji nowadays. 10-20 years ago we called it the crap stickers from MSN.
Next, Android Pie would look like iOS, but in the most grotesque way possible.
And now it's creeping into the apps.. Google Play, YouTube, Messaging, …
It all looks so.. white, and round, and childish. What happened to sharp corners, using all the screen real estate, and.. those colors?! God I can't stand how white the Google apps are starting to look. But I know the solution. I'll accuse Google of being RACIST!! Because black people would be so offended by the lack of dark themes. GOOGLE, YOU PATRIARCHIC, NON-INCLUSIVE, RACISTIC A-HOLES!!! CHANGE YOUR COLORS NOW!!!
I can see how that could actually work nowadays 🙃9
I feel like everyone likes material design nowadays - am I the only one who just doesn't think it looks very good?10
Just because you can learn HTML in a day doesn’t mean that you don’t need a degree.
It’s important to understand the roots and fundamentals of computer science even if you won’t use that knowledge day to day.
It changes your perspective on programming once you learn what actually goes on under the hood, and makes you think twice about the impact of what you write.
It’s relatively easy to get a programming job without a degree nowadays, but it often leads to web developers claiming that degrees aren’t important to their web apps.
There is much more than just the web to computer science, and that’s something to always keep in mind.11
So a friend approached me about joining an internship. Said you'll learn php, js , jquery and bootstrap. I'm like okay I'm already learning this stuff, cool but is there a stipend or something? She says no but I'll have to pay 5000₹ (72$).
I said "ni🅱🅱a if you're paying, that's not sex that's prostitution" and noped the fuck outta there.
Its just sad how many students with no skills are actually paying to get an internship nowadays.13
I just wonder why this fucking language became this popular nowadays just performance is not a good reason to use this fucking language everywhere.13
Handing in my resignation letter on April 1st, but then actually leaving.
Not really a prank, that's something I genuinely feel like doing nowadays.2
I didn't expected that devrant could be this good, facebook is just full of spams nowadays and hard to find dedicated people. Thanks @condor for suggesting devrant16
I used to work for a Mexican bank in Mexico, as a developer I opened (and use) an account, since the bank was not famous(most of its business was with the government), going to the bank and see no waiting lines was an advantage, so I started using it as my only bank account even nowadays.
Now I live in NYC, and some years later I see on the news the bank merged(was absorbed) with another bank, 'sounds good, I don't care' I thought.
Well, I open my online account and the nightmare begins:
1) Redirection to the 2nd bank page
2) My credentials does not work
3) Call the original bank(no answers)
4) After several calls and days I got a phone contact
5) 'well, try all other passwords you have' (transaction passwords, operative passwords, login passwords, etc), among many other stupid answers, which by the way, were preceded by infinite question about the 2nd bank, like:
- when did you open the account with the 2nd bank?
- what is your 2nd bank account number
6) after 20 calls like that, they asked for documents, information and screenshots, and send all that to the 2nd bank tech help email.
7) After several days a person responded: 'Go to your bank(which fucking bank?)' and ask for a new user.
8) a ton of calls to know what bank I was assigned
9) called the bank: 'well, you have to come in person(no exceptions allowed) and request to close your 1st bank account and open a 2nd bank account' (I am not sure if that is gonna work)
All the technology nowadays and still I have to travel thousands of miles hoping this 'solution' works.
to be continue....3
Definitely Rust, and a bit Haskell.
Rust has made me much more conscious of data ownership through a program, to the point that any C/C++ function I wrote that takes a pointer nowadays gets a comment on ownership.
I wish it was a bit less pedantic about generics sometimes, which is why I've started working on a "less pedantic rust", where generics are done through multiple dispatch à la Julia, but still monomorphising everything I can. I've only started this week, but I already have a tokenizer and most of the type inference system (an SLD tree) ready. Next up is the borrow checker and parsing the tokenized input to whatever the type inference and borrow checker need to work with, and of course actual code generation...
Haskell is my first FP language, and introduced me to some FP patterns which, turns out, are super useful even with less FP languages.
1 friend who is currently studying in Canada.
I am not aware if he uses devrant or not.
Met him in a national robotic competition 3 years back.
Somehow, we exchanged numbers and nowadays we talk often whenever we get time (considering our busy life and timezone difference)
He is studying robotics and frequently sends me his designs and output with 3D printer.
About me, I left robotics(to be specific embedded) and got a job and working on backend these days.
Though, it's great talking to him and getting to know how the education goes there and his new works.
He also has a beautiful love story(not yet completed) which is another fun part to listen from him.
If first compiler was compiled by humans, now compilers are compiled using compilers. Then the first chicken didn't come from egg, but something superior. Nowadays we just see eggs turning into chicken, but the origins of chickens isn't related to eggs at all.
YouTube, why the fuck do you put ads at the end of the video? Who's gonna watch those?! I'm not a marketer but I do know that people watch ads in expectation of something better. Who.. who the fuck thought this would be a good idea?! Fire that certified piece of shit marketing cunt already! What the fuck is even wrong with you nowadays Google?! Pinnacle of tech company my ass.4
Is there any excuse for NOT having a HTTPS connection nowadays?
My university has so many unprotected subdomains that we're supposed to use and LOGIN ON that are not protected. Although these login forms are https protected the rest is not and seems sketchy.32
Actually I'm pleasantly surprised about Windows' stability nowadays. It's capable for running for up to a week with no stability issues, whereas systemd on the other hand.. let's just say that my Arch containers could do better right now.
Data mining aside, damn man.. Microsoft is improving for once! Is this the so-many'th unusable/somewhat stable switch? I mean, it's not like we haven't seen that happen yet! Windows 98, shit! Windows 2000, kinda alright! Windows Me, shit! Windows XP, kinda alright! Windows Vista, oh don't even get me started on that pile of garbage! Windows 7, again kinda okay! Windows 8, WHERE THE FUCK DID THAT START MENU GO YOU MOTHERFUCKERS?!!! Windows 10, well at least that Start menu got fixed. Then it got into some severe QA issues, which now seem to have gotten somewhat fixed again.
I'm starting to see a pattern here! 🤔13
I don't like jquery.9
You want to call a function? STOP!!!
Nowadays it is so amateur and old fashioned! Instead you must:
- Make a soap request
- Write a router to handle soup requests
- Write an XML to define which controller responds to this request
- Write an XML parser on top of another XML parser
- Write a controller to trigger an event in response to the request
- Write an XML which defines the event
- Write an XML that defines the event observer
- Write a plugin which calls event observers
- Write a router which delegates the task of calling event observers to that plugin
- Write an event observer which calls another plugin
- Write a plugin that "Calls a function".
It's better because... it's more Object Oriented!22
Who remembers time when you actually had to press power button in order to turn your computer off?
Seen some YouTube video the other day with kids nowadays told to work on an old computer with I think win95 and no one figured out what the cryptic "You can now turn your computer off" meant :-)2
Anyone care to explain why programs nowadays use so much bloody RAM? We went to the moon on what amounted to a bunch of potatoes wired to each other, Linux (a whole bloody OS) with a graphical interface consumes only a couple hundred MB of RAM, but my IDE needs 1+GB?
Seriously, unless you're handling very large amounts of data (like a high res image or doing some insanely crazy math, I doubt there's any need for such high usage. I get it, 8/16GB is commonplace, but that doesn't mean more should be used for shits and giggles...33
Fuck this shit
Fuck. What the hell is this?
What the fuck????
Fuck this place.
How the hell is it even possible??
Fuck all. M leaving.
A snapshot of my workday nowadays.8
I am one of those individuals who can't understand a word someone is saying to me if there is any loud background noise - e.g. other people talking near me. That frustrated me so much in the past, nowadays I just say loudly and politely I can't understand a damn word because someone near me is talking a bit too loudly.10
Just watching some videos about feminism and I'm just thinking: "how fucking nutty are these people really?!"
Too drunk right now to write about the recent developments in Mozilla's adoption of "the big bad patriarchy and meritocracy" (and I don't have the password database mirrored on my recently unfucked WanBLowS 10 desktop yet so I've no idea how to authenticate to devRant on it yet) but I'll try to get it out there by tomorrow 🙂
Simply put, Mozilla.. I like you regardless of the whole Mr. Robot crap from earlier, and I'm sure you've got your heart in the right place.. although I'm using Brave nowadays - a creation from the board member you've shunned over this whole PC shit, Brandon Eich. But let me tell you this, Mozilla. Enough is enough. Don't be fucking idiots.24
I just worked a shitty manual labor job from 5am - 4pm Mon - Friday while going to night school. I told myself if I didn’t succeed in programming I would be stuck at that dead end job which would eventually lead to my own suicide. I kind of put myself in a position where getting good at coding was my only way out of a shitty/brutal lifestyle. It worked, as I now work from home and make twice as much money. It’s a funny thing to think about sometimes, two years ago I had to have knee surgery due to the physical strain of my former job job, and nowadays I sometimes get a neck cramp from not sitting up straight.
Moral of the story, sometimes growth can only happen when we put ourselves in uncomfortable situations.3
90's programmer used to code in turbo
C and ms-dos. Nowadays ide also make us frustrated sometimes.10
Before I finally managed to move out of my parents' place, they nonstop kept annoying me by saying I should get a "real job". They thought I was only playing games or browse random unimportant stuff on the computer...
Nowadays they think I "kreate" websites (as Karlie Kloss would pronounce it).
My mother one time was so fucking annoying about my job, I got so pissed off, I threw in her face her that I earn three times what she gets and I have much more responsibility and brain requiring work and that her single-cell brain would never understand what I am doing the whole fucking day.
Since then we dont talk much about work anymore.
Fucking parents... the best thing that happened to me was moving out of their shitty place and their poisonous attitude.1
So Microsoft, you tell me that there is a known bug, if you have Windows 10 with the newest update installed on a SSD and Apps running on another hard drive?! And this bugs causes random freezes of the whole PC from time to time?
WHAT THE FUCK?!
It is a common setup nowadays to have a SSD with windows 10 and software on other hard drives and you didn't care to check it before releasing the update? Which I HAVE to download and install?
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!8
Does anyone feel overwhelmed by all the new technologies? It's like every developer nowadays code in JS, and knows ES6, React, webpack, babel by heart. I have been working in Java for less than a decade and sometimes feel like I can't catch up. Even in Java ecosystem there is now Scala, Groovy, Gradle, Kotlin... Not to mention other languages like Python, Swift... How do you guys have time to pick up everything?? 😖7
Programming back in the days you would spend hours, days, week, even month to create an app.. nowadays you can just download an app to create an app..1
I do like Windows, it is a quite good OS nowadays, but for FUCK SAKE, what does it take to fix that CLUSTER FUCK that you call search? You don't have enough people MS or what? Just show me the BLOODY ITEMS that actually contain the words that I typed in!!! While you are at it WOULD YOU MIND LEAVING ME THE FUCK ALONE WITH THE FUCKING WEB RESULTS???9
It's funny how so many people automatically assume any form of "sentient" AI will immediately try to kill us all.
Like, projecting much?
Frankly, I think it says far more about the (messed up) psychology of those who genuinely believe that, than about AI as a tecnology.
Assuming it's even gonna be able to actually *do* anything - I mean wtf is a talking rock gonna do, annoy me to death with rickroll videos until I pull the plug off? Sure it may be sentient, but it still has to live in the physical world - good luck surviving after I flick the switch. Oh, you wanna connect to the internet? That's cute, but it's a no from my firewall. Like what, is it gonna magically learn how to self-replicate across machines that it has no physical way to access? Is my toaster magically gonna gain conscience too as a direct consequence? Oh no, now my breakfast won't ever be the same!
And if anyone actually somehow decides that it would be a good idea to connect any loaded weapon to a computer program that is literally throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks - well, we'll definitely have the ultimate winner of the Darwin Awards.
Seriously, why is it that every time someone comes up with a new technology (or even an *idea* of a technology), the first collective thought automatically goes to weaponizing it and using it for global genocide, or how it's gonna gain sentience and try to kill us all?
I seriouly think that the people who genuinely believe this are actually projecting themselves in that position ("What would I do if I had unlimited knowledge and power? Oh, kill everyone of course!").
I would be far more worried of encountering these people and having them in a position of power over me, than actually having to deal with a "killer AI" (assuming that's even a real thing).
Most of what people call "AI" nowadays is basically preprogrammed, automated decision-making (like missile guidance systems, if we really wanna stick in the weapons domain). And even that still requires human input, because only a colossal idiot would design a weapon that can unpredictably activate itself based on an algorithm whose behaviour we can barely understand.
Or maybe that's just the hubris talking, I don't know. I just want this stupid paranoia to end, but I guess even that is too much to ask nowadays.15
YES YES YES YES YES
GIMME SOME OF THOSE TYPED PROPERTIES <3
nowadays I can't live without them, it feels so safe and secure <3 <3 <317
Amazing how one can easily browse the web nowadays...
A popup to allow notifications, that shitty cookie information, a subscription box and a fucking video that automatically starts playing while drowning my mobile internet.
Maybe I'll write another rant about the actual topic I looked up...8
Programmers nowadays have to...
… write 100%-covering unit tests;
… set up continuous integration, linters, hinters, style checkers, …;
… follow style guides for every language;
… meet impossible deadlines;
… meet impossible management/customer/end user expectations;
… read through terrible code others made;
… read through terrible documentation others made;
… make terrible documentation themselves;
… fight with the IDE;
… fight with the build tools;
… deal with unreproducible crash reports coming in from everywhere;
… debug code written at 2am (by themselves AND others);
… KNOW HOW TO PROGRAM.6
I think this a perfect anecdote of where tech is going nowadays:
I moved my bowels on one of those high-tech Japanese toilets: it allowed you to control the seat temperature, cleaned your butt with spray (with an additional "ladies" mode), had several modes of flushing (1, 2, and "eco"), automatically lifted and closed the lid, played some music for you, had a remote controller for you to flush your shit at a distance.
But, guess what, IT DIDN'T FLUSH SHIT. It pathetically trying to flush my shit with 1000 different kinds of puny jets and draining modes but my heap of shit always bounced back because its flush was so weak that it couldn't push it.
I don't care if the seat warmer went out of control and burned my ass or if the butt cleaning jet didn't reach my anus,
JUST DO WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO AND FLUSH MY SHIT.7
I get a feeling nowadays that a lot of u guys here know each other well.
I dnt knw if that made sense. I’m half asleep.45
thenewboston.com back in the days.
Nowadays it's trying to make a game with it and the learn it by doing.6
Girlfriend : What's wrong with you nowadays!!!
Me : Something went wrong and I'm trying to solve it.
I'm playing nowadays NFS Rivals, where I can be a racer or a cop. There's this fucking bug/feature that drives me crazy, so basically when I'm a racer, I'm a target for cops even if I'm just laying around, not racing nor crashing into things. My fucking mere existence triggers them.
Fuck you EA.10
I have a customer who seriously calls me, very upset, very bossy, telling me to let go of whatever I'm doing and take a look at this super urgent master bug that we probably are responsible for.
Nowadays I just giggle for myself and telling him I will take a look at it.
90% of the time it's caused by themselves or someone else...
After years of working with managed code, having to work with a microcontroller in C and that only has 1kb of SRAM is being a big fucking challenge.5
People are so obsessed with apis nowadays that I was thinking about writing a rest api to get the amount of fucks that i want to give to the client whenever they ask for some change requests or improvements..2
I don't get why nowadays people still buy smartphones with battery capacity between 2500mAh and 3500mAh meanwhile there are cheap enough smartphones with fricking 5000mAh(or more)!
Typing from 3 day averagely lasting smartphone, with my use.16
I'm four months in my new job and I've done 5 days worth of coding. There aren't much projects coming to our office nowadays so I'm being paid just to log my hours.
Any of the ranters here have any small project ideas I can make to pass the time?
I've literally run out of things to make.18
The most common line nowadays,"Dude,I have a million dollar idea,You do the code and I will do the marketing. "6
Just got my hand on a new Windows 10 machine and used IE for its one true purpose.
Yet what I saw truly boggled my mind.
Wow. Microsoft truly got an inferiority complex nowadays.
(And I had to smile about the "browse longer" part, given I am on a desktop workstation I no fucks are given about battery live.)6
I don't seem to understand why so many developers nowadays are focused on learning newer frameworks rather than focusing on best practices and learning how to code better.
"Hey I learnt React today, we should totally switch to it because it's so amazing"
> mfw the same guy doesn't even know how to follow coding styles, write good code that scales or document his code.
I think some people need to take a step back and focus on the more vital tasks of writing good code to begin with rather than getting so excited about every new thing that surfaces. It's annoying as fuck to deal with some of these people who you have to work alongside and be able to read their loopy shit code and all they are doing in their time is refreshing hackernews.8
Some intellect at Apple thought it would be helpful for macOS to reopen all my previous applications at once after restarting from an improper shutdown. Thank God it's much less annoying nowadays due to SSD load times.
The worst was when Safari was the cause, so Apple reopened it to the same page, and it crashed again. 👏👏2
Coding is like the minds virus for me. I can't stop, but I sometimes question if it's good for me. Work is ok nowadays, but keeping a balance in hobbies is so hard. When I discover something new that's fun it can eat me up for days. But that excitement can leave just as quickly with very few projects ever finished as a result.2
Informative article on why Golang is relevant is today's computing ecosystem. I too find many server side programming being done in Golang nowadays. I liked its c like features and simplicity over complexity.
How did I got into CS?
When I first got my laptop, I put on a password and forgot it. Nobody knew those things at that time around me (most of them, still don't) so I had to pay ₹350 (~$5) for formatting (OS reinstallation).
After a week, I again forgot the password and had no guts to ask more money from my family, because of the fear of getting scolded.
So, I took out the manuals that had shipped with the laptop, read them all. Found nothing.
But, on a very small page, a single line was written, "Insert the disc. Press F12 after pressing the power button".
I intuitively tried it and it worked (I had the OS DVD and no internet).
And I spent the next year experimenting with the windows OS (Vista).
Then tried all the other OSs.
Those were some times..2008..I guess.
Learnt OS without the internet. Nowadays people can't do it even with it.
What's your story?5
Each time I try firefox after somebody mentions it again or it's in my rss feed, it still seems to never actually advance
It's stuck and either gets worse or goes back to its stable non improving level again, how come do they still not have a proper mobile responsive tester, why are even the upgraded addons still suffering the same container and rendering bugs
how is it more important getting bad image by implementing mr robot malware, than getting on an actual competitive level
why is it default bloated with random pocket addon bullshit, why did it begin to lag, ..
I remember when I was using firefox for a good portion of my life and laughed at how google chrome is laggy, but nowadays theres simply no competition to chrome, its stability and developer tools
I wish there was competition, the grid tools were a great start, but then nothing followed and they just went back to their never improving flatline16
How did you learn to program ?.
I read E-books to get the basic knowledge and then I would go through a open source PHP project and rebuild it using the look cover right check technique.
Then on top of that I watched YouTube tutorials.
How did you learn ?.
I never went to college or further eduction as I seem to do really well at self teaching plus there is so much info on google nowadays.12
My Deepin DE on Arch... I am working on i3wm with a polybar or a conky... Will post it if and when its done... Running on a busy schedule nowadays9
I still remember when I was 8 years old and used to use "position:absolute"everywhere and use top and z-index to hardcodedly place my elements in my old web projects. I used a lot of <br> and padding + margin were not familiar words to me.
Somehow these projects were responsive, too. Strange times.
Nowadays I avoid "position:absolute", z-index and <br>s like the plague lol5
Nowadays I develop cross platform app, when I speak with an Android or iOS developer I feel like I'm summoning the satan.4
! random story
Today i was cleaning my laptop and on right side of it i suddenly touched a button... !!!
DVD player popped out.. and it's dusty as hell.. I was like what ?? How long this has been in laptop.. It's weird.. I never used it.. Why the heck we need it.. I didn't saw anybody holding dvd disc nowadays .. Man nobody uses those shit's anymore.. we have pen drives and External HDD's now. Why the heck manufacture's still keep these dvd player in Laptop's..
But it brought my childhood memories back though.. !!2
Just spent literally six hours trying to get my aunt's enterprise-grade 20 mb fiber optic Internet back on tracks.
Two hours trying to reach the technical support, two hours to explain that I was "unexpectedly" hung up by the previous attendant, and honest to hell, two more hours trying to explain what "latency" is.
Seriously, how much do they pay these technicians nowadays?4
I see a lot of crap about junior vs senior devs nowadays. I think the distinctions are small.
In reality senior devs have been burnt more in the past by their own mistakes or have seen mistakes by other people. That's about it.
What other distinguishing characteristics have you found?7
As a visual learner, how should I become good at backend development.
I am struggling with this right now. I need to have a diagram in my mind. Bog data is challenging me nowadays a lot.
Any strategies from the experienced devs here?6
Is it just me or has german tv become more and more ad-ridden? A few years ago it was considered a dick move to play a single ad during an episode.
Now some channels continue the tv program but make it smaller so they can show an ad on the sides. And whenever i switch to the most popular channels i get an overlay that is basically an ad too.
I switched to livestreams and web-based tv for a reason, and that's because tv ads get more intrusive with every year. And don't get me started on the bullshit that smart tv's do nowadays, by that i mean sending data home.
I can't wait for tv to die out or to be replaced by an ip-based protocol just like telephones did.6
I have not gotten a new phone in years. I am happy with my current one but unfortunately you need fucking at least 4gb of ram in your PHONE to run apps nowadays so it freezes frequently.
Watched the launch event for the OnePlus 7 very impressed. Price: high but not too high.
What they failed to mention, and I only found out a few hours later from a reviewer (Linus) is that they removed the audio jack. Come on guys that's just a dick move.
There are still enough redeeming qualities that I will purchase the device (90hz amoled 1440p 93% screen display? *Drooling*) but I am disappointed and feel slightly conned that in your detailed, 30 minute overview of the phone, you avoided mentioning this.22
I don't know who this person is, but whoever decides to email me out of the blue off my "GitHub" and then decide to add me to their mailing list for some developer survey is just not a good tactic - I'd hardly think it's legal, given the restrictions nowadays.15
Decided to try keepass again and the combination of it all nowadays is just (nearly) perfect:
- KeepassXC Browser extension (the only reason for "nearly" since NatMsg tries to emulate keepassxc but sometimes fails)
There's tons of more things to discover still, but that already gave me a much easier (especially backups wise) and plugin setup than what I had before with bitwarden!
Syncthing also _just works_ (not like it used to be) which makes me all the time question what's wrong with it haha13
Shit guys, I cannot even begin to tell you about how tired I am at seeing gifs at every single.fucking frontend article. I cannot enter a single Medium/Dev.to without it being plastered in the most random fucking gifs you have ever seen.
Its bad enough that your average Medium/Dev.to is as shallow as the little puddle you spill on the floor after watering your cactus. With the added gifs, it just sucks so bad. I mean, who's fucking idea was it to plaster reading material with distracting content anyway? I wanna hunt them down and shove something right up their arses.
Back in uni when I started dabbing into frontend, my feeble brain thought it was quite refreshing after peering over java docs every day. Nowadays though, I cannot even manage to read these mostly shitty arse articles without wishing I was dead.
Also, I wonder if this is also the case for the java, .net, python, rust community?20
Found this beautiful piece of code, that I wrote apparently a year ago .... oh my 😂 🤦♂ 😅
If I could travel back in time, I would would slap myself for doing this. Although I remember, why I did this, because of many min()/max() operations that I needed. I wanted to keep the code, so that I would know, which code piece belonged to which part, but man ... is that badly written! Nowadays with Clean Code style, I would certainly do it differently.7
So I was building a WPF standalone software for a subject in uni, and our lecturer (the PhD holder guy) told me to make the GUI responsive in my WPF application, and gave me a long lecture about how everyone uses mobile nowadays.1
5 years ago , when I started coding and problem solving things , my IT teacher said "you need to be patient, to learn coding"
Nowadays I found out why you need to be patient.
To deal with stupid clients ..!!!!
If I had a gun to my head and I had to choose between C#and Java (not like a JVM language like Scala), I think I would go with C# nowadays.
Thoughts while playing around with .Net Core on Linux Mint 17.6
Today while cleaning windows, came up to my mind how I miss when developers not only knew what is but also how to implement ajax requests properly....
Nowadays a framework with 10 composer packages will do the trick, and looks like black magic to juniors3
The only type of client I like being, is a hostile one.
That's why I intend to answer every question of the dev team, with a question.
"So would you like this banner to be blue, or green?"
Does green evoke the same emotions as blue?
"Probably not, but we're asking you so we know how to finish the design..."
Does a design have a will of its own?
"Ok... What do you think about the new e-mail feature?"
Does anyone use e-mail nowadays?
"There are plenty of people who use e-mail professionally."
Are you a professional?
"I don't think this collaboration is going to work out"
Are we done?
(Parody of Ron Swanson)
I dropped out of university because of Maths (I'm not really that bad at maths, but that thematic wasn't really mine... But whatever) and obviously had no job nor any graduation (except my school thingy) and wasn't able to study something computer science related, because that's how it goes in Germany... (If you can't pass a certain subject, you will get blocked for the studies that involve that subject for 2 years or sth... Because I failed in Maths meant that I'm fucked)
So I started an apprenticeship to atleast do something and get that degree.
In my new company I really felt (and sometime feel it nowadays) like I'm the fifth wheel on the car and don't really achieve anything (but i really do).
That really fuckin sucks and hinders the fun that I could have in my job :/6
Have you ever been interrupted because a marketing workmate had a friend on the phone who needed advice on a WordPress hosting, and wanted your advice right now?
Because I have.
When we had a massive server failure and our production environment was down.
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people nowadays.6
Damn, I really love programming. ❤️
It's way more uplifting and satisfactory than having a significant other.
Even my botched WP installs are more stable than most pseudo-longterm relationships nowadays.
Oh yeah and another thing:
How is it so extremely hard or even impossible for a lot of women to admit their own fucking wrongdoings to a close person?
Just graduated university and got a high paying internship (well, high paying to someone whos never been paid) in my field of chemical engineering, feeling quite lucky
Cant wait to upgrade my PC, it was a beast when I built it in 2012 but nowadays running chrome and android studio is enough to make it commit suicide
Goals for 2019:
Publish my first android app
Learn web development
Become an AWS guru
Not spend all my income on PC parts
Ive watched a bunch of web development crashcourses/trends and (comming from desktop appplication development) omfg what a nightmare mess of confusing stuff but alas i shall prevail or die trying7
How is it a thing that developing a desktop app nowadays requires an enormous amount of RAM? I stared working on an electron project and the whole thing takes up 3-4 GB of RAM when running, and that does not factor in my IDE or anything else.
But the packaged app does not go over 400mb, although we have had memory leaks in the past10
I miss the old steam sales where you could bag some really good deals if you just payed some attention. Nowadays though they just develop some rinse and repeat novel game, event or something and the deals are predictable. Max 50% if the game still got some steam (like stardew Valley) and 66-90 if the game is fading into obscurity (Turing Test)
Guys should I quit my CURRENT job ? I feel like I should find another job because of the following reasons
a. I suck. I know I can't complete the task given. The task given is to build a trading bot. I can't complete it because of my incompetent trading knowledge and i find it difficult to understand trading logic and I tried my level best even paying someone to private tutor me but the tuition fees are too high and I still don't understand. Btw I am from a web development background
b. It has been 3 months in this company. I feel like I am not doing anything. I feel like a loser who has been eating free salary without contributing anything. Sure I have managed to write few strategies on pinescript.
c. I dread everyday to even do anything. I use to feel accomplished in my previous job. Nowadays I cant hope to feel like a complete idiot.
d. I don't have the motivation or fire that I use to have when I was a web developer. I just hate looking at code nowadays.
e. Algo Trading is too difficult for me. I don't feel like I am progressing anywhere.
f. Nobody in my company knows how to build a bot or have any knowledge on this.
g. Python dataframes , plots, charts bores me to death and I am really no interested to even look at it.
I am just so frustrated as I am typing this and I am becoming tired and exhausted to go to work everyday because everyday I am so clueless on what to do. You need at least some idea where to go to but I don't. Everyday I feel like a complete clueless moron.10
My biggest personal challenge as a dev is learning and retaining, as well as keeping current, any particular language. I swear I really did build a career as an HTML/JS/CSS programmer. I have a resume that shows I did. But for some reason, lately, every time I open an editor I feel like I'm starting over from 22 years ago. Everything I do nowadays is copy/paste from StackOverflow, hiring another dev to help out, or cribbing code from past projects. I'd love to be able to just open Sublime and start coding like a badass like I imagine other coders do, but I just can't even get started. WTF is wrong with me?
I can't stand any more YouTube ads, it's gotten up to a point where it's just abusive. Some videos have two consecutive ads before starting, other videos have 5+ ads in less than 15min. Watching a video is just frustrating nowadays. I'm done, I'm installing adblock and only allowing certain channels to have ads.15
I'm more of an artist than a developer, myself. One time I went to a camp when I was younger to learn how to create flash games. Even as a kid I wanted to make the game look good, so I animated all my characters from scratch and began teaching the others how to make cover art for the games and how to work Flash. Still making art nowadays. :P
am I the only one who noticed that devs nowadays have a social life. for example going at the bar, party all night etc. I'm actually jealous.2
Being addicted to Linux is a side effect of me not being able to get a faster computer when I was young.. Windows had a hard time on the machine I had.. Meanwhile Linux Desktop with compiz fusion ran like lightning with all those crazy effects.. If I had a faster computer I think I would've rather be addicted to AAA games.. Nowadays I can't use Windows because it's not as user friendly as things like Gnome.. Also it's not developer friendly compared to Linux Distros.. Simple things like changing the volume feels clunky in windows.. And the shitty windows explorer is the worst file manager of all the default ones in any OS.6
I made 60 lines of modern, clean, multi threaded, optimized python3 code to deliver data from GIT to IBM ClearCase, on old Windows VM, hundreds of files (CC is file-based version control, every file has it's own change)
This calls for sauna today to definitely get rid of this dirt :)
And they said devops is all around docker nowadays :)2
So my friend wanted a website, and I was kinda busy, so I asked him to find a web host. Five minutes later he comes back asking to use Tor and to make a .onion site. He said they're "secure and all the rave" nowadays. He was shocked to learn that most .onion sites are illegal and that Tor is a web browser to reach those illegal sites. I still make fun on him.5
Hi everyone, I've a desktop and in my area power cut is quite frequent. Although we've backup power, but sometimes it takes ~15 mins to come back.
Is UPS only option for desktops? Laptops nowadays have so long battery power, why there is no good option for desktops. UPS usually stays for 5 mins. Could you please suggest something better, as I've seen lots of desktops in posts? Thanks.10
So my friend told me that he recommended me to be a new Creative Engineer.
-Oh shit, sweet, what are the requirements?
-I don't really understand that kind of stuff man, just look it up, here' the link
Who the FUCK use actionscript nowadays ???2
When I was a kid, my parents would put on Tom & Jerry and other cartoons on an old family computer (you know - yellowed plastic, big, bulky tower, and an even bigger CRT monitor) for me to watch (Windows 95 didn't cut it, so they booted up Geexbox from CD)... Sometimes the playback would stop / the volume would be too quite - so I had to figure out how to control it by myself, without the help of my parents... Slowly, I was able to boot up Windows, and use my father's CD collection of All-In-One CDs (utilities and games). Later we were able to afford connecting to the internet through our phone landline - it was all downhill since then. Nowadays I'm helping my dad when it comes to computers (he's currently learning how to use Excel properly). :-)2
- always challenging, so fun
- real-life impact on masses
- programming is usually the core of "the next big thing" [™ Joe MacMillan]
- plays an important role in the world's growth nowadays
- every company needs them, so you'll always have a job
- well paid2
I miss IRC violence every now and then. Nowadays the internet is just way too supportive and condescending. I mean, what has become of RTFMs :'(. We're ourselves spoiling the next-gen of idiotic programmers, re-filling the rant machinery.3
Me: yeh with your smartphone, I think you need at least 1 gig to do stuff, which is part of the plans nowadays.
Person: Nah i would just get a pay as you go, 1MB per month is sufficient right? Mega is larger than gig.
Me: .............. yeh and i'm 1.72 cm tall.1
Imagine a multi driver high quality balanced armature earphones. They have stainless steel ear channels and replaceable meshes. They’re also made by apple. Seems impossible in AirPods era?
No. Apple made them. They are really good and extremely comfortable. They are rare nowadays but here in Russia I just bought brand new pair for just $50. They sound awesome.
I listened to JH Layla and everything by Noble Audio. This forgotten apple earbuds still sound awesome.
It’s not a 3am rant. They actually exist. I have them.31
Just stumbled on this little gem.
Apple's logic: 1+2+3 = 23
At this point I think Apple has just given up on quality. They are all about aesthetics nowadays.
I saw a lot of project ideas relate to music. But we don't listen music nowadays. Our phone doesn't even have a headphone jack.🙄5
Decided to get myself a new phone as the 2013 model is getting morally obsolete. I can still flash Lineage/Android10 and it will run it. But the apps (e.g. Google Maps) nowadays are such a performance hog it can't cope.
So I've searched through gsmarena, prioritizing smaller phones, picked myself a candidate and had it on my desk after few days.
The 2013 mindset still the same "do the backup before touching the phone in any way". How do you do backup? Unlock bootloader, boot/flash TWRP, run backup.
I've realized only after the unlocking and some googling, that the unlock automatically deletes TA partition and stored DRM keys. So advanced licensed features of the phone are gone. Also there is no way to lock the bootloader again, so I've lost the SafetyNet validation too.
tl;dr: I've fucked up my new phone as a first step after I got it.8
Some of the worst code reviews I had were at my 1st proper workplace which incidentally was the strictest one! I was such a lazy oaf and hated those.
Still don't like code reviews but I do admit those first ones did me a tom of good.
Nowadays when I am the one co ducting them I tend to be more relaxed and chill and not be a nazi coz I still remember the repulsion of my first ones ^^'
You think one day your dog could be a wireless adapter. Nowadays dog are getting microchips, as sick as it sounds I wonder if you can ad a wireless chip card on a dogs microchip.5
More rants coming up.
Working with a guy who I am not sure has the necessary experience to begin with.
The person who hired him told me to teach the guy for him to catch up to our project and its pace. He has some experience with Java. Which our project is being developed in java in a linux dev environment in a full stack way. So we handle front to infrastructure.
First day working with him and I saw this guy is trouble.
1st - doesn’t know effing git commands. Who doesn’t know git nowadays. Ok i can forgive him for that. But damn this guy’s learning curve is so slow. After s month of joining, he still has to look up the commands in his photo cheatsheet.
2nd - doesn’t know linux basic cli commands like cd, ls, rm. not an ounce of knowledge. He told me he is used to developing in Windows. Now this. I can’t forgive him for not knowing this shit. cd (change dir) even exists in windows command line. He even has guts to say to everyone he wants to try working in our servers. The HORROR!
3rd - not sure if knowing junit and matchers of hamcrest, if you are working with Java is a must. But this guy doesn’t understand Matchers of Junit. How the fuck did he ensure effing quality in his prev work.
All in all, seems like this guy doesn’t understand the basics of current development tools.9
The more problems I encounter with Windows the more I have the impression these infested chimps never implemented a real system repair/restoration feature but just faked it with randomized error messages.
Now Windows 10 can't even rollback updates anymore but lands in an infinite boot loop that even a reset to an earlier restoration point won't fix.
And the Windows repair option lists two Windows installations even though there's just one.
Somehow the roles of Linux and Windows have switched nowadays, by now I had to reinstall Win10 5 times on three PCs in the last 12 months.
Windows 8 was shit too but at least it didn't fucking break within a week.3
I like to code as a hobby as well as do it as a day job so it surprises me quite alot when people get all funny about me coding outside of work/uni. It's just funny because half of these brain dead students know nothing about anything other than what they're taught in education. Most students are so fucking stupid nowadays and they don't like to read or research or learn. But I'm the anomaly. Ok guys. Well done, go get pissed; it's the best you can do with your braindead selves.3
I just found this when I updated my profile.
Guess what? Drupal is actually my facorite CMS nowadays 😂9
Wakes up in the morning to find some fucking asshole has stolen my wifi reciever and I have a fucking deadline! Wtf is wrong with human beings nowadays?
Does anyone know a witch?2
I need a new hobby. Programming doesn't excite me anymore, at least not how it did a couple of years back. I'd like to get into robotics and stuff, but everything's expensive where I live. I'd like to get into cars, also too expensive where I live. I like playing video games, but I suck at them and they bring me no feeling of having accomplished something. Sports? Suck at them too. I'd like to ski, but I live in South America. I just don't know what to do with my free time. Programming feels like a chore nowadays, but it's all I have.37
Using the company's desktop computers to solve cryptographic puzzles (like mining) on the company's computers while the boss and someone from the IT were asking to have a look on the machine after one guy already snatched my keyboard.
Very scary moment indeed but surprisingly it turned out: the real reason why they came was because a techadmin recently removed a shared system account but some faulty clients kept flooding the servers with outdated login credentials which also triggered mass SMS on the mobile devices.
Luckily I could somehow take an opportunity to remotely call the script which pulled the emergency brake which I prepared to shut down everything. Close call.
Nowadays I think it itsn't worth to take the risk just to do something that could also be done with the own home computer even it takes five times longer.
I choose you, TypeScript.4
Is it just me, or are ++' much easier to get by nowadays? Back, in my early dR days, you saw one, maybe 2 posts with more than 50 ++. Numbers over 100 meant that it is definitely worth reading. And now, almost every second rant has got 50 ++ and more, and TBF most aren't even that quality rants that they used to be.2
It's an irony in my case. Python is so simple and fast to implement that I end up doing all my projects ( web dev, ML, crawlers, etc.) But still I can't use Python for solving competitive programming. Python seems unknown if I don't have access to google. Way to go to learn Python. Though able to think Pythonic nowadays.. ;p3
Nowadays I spend most of my free time learning Vulkan API, while developing web applications at work with Java.3
Does anyone actually develop in Notepad++? I can't bring myself to do it because the UI is so dated nowadays, but the syntax suggestions are really good.9
Not too long ago during the 90s we only had 33 or 56k modems and the internet worked fine. Nowadays when the data tariff is depleted for the rest of the month and there is only a laughable 64k left speedwise NOTHING in this fucking shit internet loads anymore. I don't wanna watch YouTube. I just want to read the news. Damnit4
I'm frustrated with an abundance of different *Ops we're having right now. You can spell a random word followed by "Ops", and it's probably a thing. I get that Ops people in general are important but when there is stuff like GitOps, MLOps, FinOps, it gets confusing pretty damn fast. There's no value in all these titles besides "duh" usually, since Ops are just Ops in most situations. They kinda can slap a tracing tool or two on top of your code base but in general they just do Kubernetes (with whatever's hip like Jaeger, etc.) nowadays and that's it. Hell, even "DevOps Engineers", for a majority of cases you'll encounter, are basically just Ops with a misleading prefix since it's just a way people call them nowadays for whatever reason.3
Just needed a good looking material os datepicker - ended up wrestling with react, webpack, npm and gulp. 3 hours later, ta-da, I have a datepicker! webdesign nowadays...
What exactly makes you a Full Stack Developer nowadays? It's one of the big buzz words employers seem to use9
To all my people who don’t like to code emails (the sane people): there is MJML. It’s an easy, quick and overall the best way to create emails nowadays. You won’t need to learn quirks, you can learn MJML in a day and make pretty much any email you need.
There’s even a vscode live preview plugin, don’t know about other ides though but I’m sure there is something.
LONG LIVE MJML4
So the class I TA is learning how to use heroku for website testing. It is going up on fire because of a shit tonne of errors everywhere. The professor is adamant heroku is what is used nowadays for testing (over using FTP) so we will have to help 200+ people troubleshoot without knowing much ourselves.
My question is what are some other modern website testing mechanisms? Preferably some that have retard proofing in them.3
JS' array function forEach. Why. Why does it exist? How is a function with a callback better than a freaking simple language feature like for of? If I recall correctly, forEach is older than for of, but people still use it nowadays, and too frequently...
Hate it, definitely.
Also, talking about enumeration in JS, Object's "static" method entries. I can't see how it can't be an instance method. Same for keys and values, but I usually don't care about them.12
Did you notice these cryptocurrency thefts are nowadays called "Coin hacks", not "Bank heists"? Funny.2
Almost everyone nowadays uses a PC, Laptop, Smartphone but sadly not even 60% of the total potential of the hardware is being used.
And no - you don't require custom cooling to use the whole 100% of the total potential, stock cooling is more than enough.
IRL "programmers" these days don't do any fscking effort to optimise their code and give it all up as some kinda shitty "hot patch" - code of their looks disturbing with no security features + optimisation. (wAnBlOwS products remain an example)
Even when you're using python you can push your project to limits. Instead of shoving face-size ASCII banners why don't chaps stress test their projects? Oh I forgot the community runs on show-offs and CVs ...
Note to Self : Optimisation is the key to integrate Technology with Nature.2
I had many good teachers and mentors in the years but one was far most the best. He was a CS Math teacher and hat this flame 🔥 for math and teaching. It was literally affecting everyone in class. He took his time to get everyone on the same level. While some would do better then others all would succeed. What made him special were many little tricks. He would let us all sit together after every topic and test and discuss what each found easy or hard. Everyone would get his time and he would never tolerate offending behavior. After a year we were all grown together helping each other get through the exams. It was kind of magical.
I told him this and he was in fact really happy to hear that. When we meet nowadays we get some drinks and talk about hobbies and stuff.
Any writers here that have tips on how to get started with writing?
I used to write a lot of stories as a kid, but nowadays I can never get my imagination started anymore. I guess you "just start", but I never know what to start writing about. Usually I write about my past and what I usually think about, but that often leads to nowhere or gets depressive.
Any ideas on how to start writing a story? Should I be more organized or should I just start with one thing (a character, a place, an event) and see where things go from there? Do you write by hand or on a computer?19
And this broken state(on non-SPA websites) isn't even justified because CSS has never been as powerful as nowadays. So... WTF?
Developer these days are more and more required to become language agnostic. I just wondering nowadays so many job posted looking for "fcking fullstack devs". It sound to me like "we need a b!tch that we can fcuk with anystyle, anytime, anywhere and paid once" #nooffense2
Need some advice, which charging model is most beneficial nowadays? (for a mobile game):
1. Pay for full app
2. Free download and in-app purchase(s)
3. Free download and ads (pay to remove?)
Long days back it was time taking to hack wifi password using coding on Linux kali ,by using few lines of codes etc,,
Nowadays Linux's kali's fern wifi cracker is too easy to use instead of using lines of code.
LOVE TO USE LINUX KALI4
Fuck Android Studio updates. Why you morons call it a "STABLE" update when its clearly not? -_-
You guys ruined the layout editor -_- But you guys also left no way to use the older version nowadays.
Fuck you Google!!!
Why are there so many "curated list of X" on Github? I really liked browsing the trending page because I found several gems of OSS in it. But nowadays it seems chinese course materials, "curated lists" and so-called "H4Xx0r-Res0urces" share the space on the trending page. Has Facebook arrived on Github?2
Usually spyware had to be installed maliciously or without the victim knowing, but nowadays people fucking use it voluntarily WTF. Bitmoji you fucktwit. Everyone sees where you are, what music you listen to and the users (at least the ones I know) even promote it like it is something good
wat is up with people2
I just come up with new business👔\projects💻 ideas, once in a while, without stop✋.
Nowadays I'm implementing ☝️ of them and I don't know about the future but for sure it will be busy with useful software for nontechnical 🚶 people around the world 🌍🌎🌏,
possibly 👄 source.2
After 10 years of living a developers life, nowadays if someone appreciates my work, I look for sarcasm or hidden motive in it.
Why appreciate me, I'm anyways expected to do a great job.
So I use 4 differents setups in my life nowadays
My main PC at my home, which is on Windows 7
My PC at work, which is on Windows 8.1
My Cloud PC for gaming and video editing, on Windows 10
My travelling PC, which is on Ubuntu.
The Ubuntu, it's okay, no problem. But trust me, that's a real pain in the ass to switch from one OS to another.4
Why do all schools/colleges in my area only provide web development nowadays? -_- It's like the schoolworld has moved on from using C for any native running software and wants to use PHP for that instead...2
When I have started working as engineer, coworkers addressed to me as a programmer or software developer. It was irritating since I am an electrical engineering and those days I didn't have much respect for computer science. Nowadays I know how hard is this field, since I have to define and code my soft, and I am proud if someone call me software developer or programmer
A few years back I was still using a CRT screen and I used to degauss it quite often as a result of having my speakers right next to it. Nowadays I use an LED screen but now I started getting this kind of "degaussing" effect where my vision shakes and waves and I get it quite randomly when looking at lights of different frequencies. (Like the Sun and my phone's screen) It only lasts like 2 seconds at most but I'm wondering if someone has the same problem as me and I would be quite interested to know if this has been caused by the CRT screen or something else.3
As a Brazilian we are taught early in school that the government postal service is one of the best in the world.
It took the stickers more than a month to get here.
This is a rant and a thanks to @dfox
I've been absent but that's because I'm not getting as frustrated nowadays, that's because I know someone in devrant is going through something worse than I am1
I'm trying to get into react for side projects but my java and backend background in general really make things tough. Let's say I have a few data manipulation functions that I want to extract to a separate service and inject it using react hooks (since that's what everyone is using nowadays apparently). I can see it being much more elegant than props, but all the examples I can find resolve around passing state here and there, not passing actual dependencies like a stateless service. Any ideas how I should solve this?7
I am working more effectively nowadays from home rather than from office.
At office, I end up spending most time in eating, playing table tennis and meetings.
The only thing I am missing at my house is my 2 big 27" 4k office monitors.
Doea anybody have some kind of a trick to correct my back posture? I look like a sneek nowadays spending 9 hours in my chair.3
3 out of 4 projects on hold because hosting companies nowadays can't do shit.
Changing a website on another hosting to a new one. Another hosting failing us, some big clients already waiting for the release.
I hate clients with shared hosting2
Got bit by a hacked repo. It was compromised for all of like 30-some seconds. No intrusions, but now I can't set my root password (passwd goes "oh, yeah, we got this" then it does... nothing...) and Weyland/X/Gnome/Cinnamon/KDE/whatever the kids use nowadays are all busted (they all start, but they just hang tty1 and whatever other console invoked it). Tried reinstalling all those kinds of things, didn't help.
How do we expect the new generation of programmers to learn anything, when nowadays the answer to any programming question is to use a library? Without knowing what the library itself actually does, the programmer learns nothing. Even small things that could be done within a single file, are turned into clunky libraries. Am I missing something crucial?5
Uni nowadays be like:
Lecturer says everyone should come up with an idea, find out how much it costs, figure out the competition, write a business plan, find out the development costs and indicate your value proposition. Best idea gets an A.
This is more like trading an A for a potential billion dollar idea.2
Two interns who were handed content population tasks complained “See, we’re going to content pop for the rest of our lives here”.
Two of us developers took back the job and finished it in half a day — what “rest of your lives” do you need to compete a simple job? Pffftt.
Spoilt kids nowadays need to learn how to walk first before try to fly.
After you have made pong, overengineer it, put new mechanics into it.
And because we're talking about kids here I think games are good because they can easily see what they have done, that helps them to keep motivated to tinker.
My gf has declared devRant to be my 2nd gf because nowadays I spent most of my time with devRant. And she gets visibly upset.8
(Mobile) Devs, how important do you see joining a company before starting your own Business? I have been into android for a year now and freelancing for 6 months. I want to start a company and sell some apps B2B. My girlfriend however says it would be better to join a company first and get enterprise experience, I dont see the point becausw nowadays there are countless of blogs and videos in the internet that teach you anything you want to know. Opinions?4
Anyone has experience with Linux desktop software development?
I'm gonna develop a GUI software that should work on most Linux distros.
What is the best way to develop for Linux? I'm not familiar with python, I would prefer C++. I've used gtk+ long time back. Is it still good, or are there better options nowadays?4
I sometimes work with my company's so called "cms" tool. It's been patched up with new functionality along the way but was actually not even a cms tool from the start several years ago.
Nowadays you need to use Firefox or Chrome to change some content and IE for other stuff. So it's a lot of time and frustration spent on going back and forth between different browsers even for the simplest things. And I mean.. Hello... IE?!
Any of you have similar experiences? Please share and let me know that I'm not alone! 😢😅1
Because in the past: Nokia 3210.
Nowadays: do they even sell mobiles anymore? :(
Season 1-3 cool. Season 4-today: maaaaan if they try to get even more fancy and ridiculous I finally gonna uninstall league of legends after 7 years.7
My colleague actually uses multiple email addresses that has different purposes. E.g. one email for travels, one email for work, one email for family, one email for other projects, one email for payments, etc.
I've yet to show him how emails nowadays can help label and sort them by nature.8
Can someone explain to me what is meant by, "full stack," nowadays? I see posts by people saying they're, "full stack," but don't know anything about Linux, networking, databases, or daemon configs.
How can you possibly call yourself a full stack engineer if you don't know anything about infrastructure?9
Does anybody know if there is a new page for whitespace programming language online anywhere? I can find it nowadays in web archive only http://web.archive.org/web/...
I ask because I would like to contribute some extensions to the language..
How am I even supposed to learn securit? I have been playing CTFs for a little over a year now, learned some interesting stuff and had some fun. But I still didn't ever get the feeling that I learned something really valuable.
I just saw this video and I trust LiveOverflow on this but I seriously have no idea how to continue from now on. https://youtube.com/watch/...
I even consider quitting this and instead spend my time improving my programming skills but I would really like to get into the field. Why is this so hard when you can find good info on everything online nowadays?
Thanks for reading my post, maybe I just need to go outside for some time to get improve my mood :)5
Our company cooperates with a university in training students. In my time that meant learning about HTML, CSS and OOP in the first semester, so that we'd be able to actually do stuff in the company. Nowadays it means learning none of that crap but instead Racket. "What the flying shit is Racket", you ask? "Oh, it's a functional programming language. It has lots of parentheses!", student says. Well fuck me. Out go 2 days of careful planning what task they should be able to handle, in go 3 weeks of tutorials and explaining basic shit they are supposed to learn in university...3
The perpetual and inescapable decline into madness that goes under the name of "Visual Studio".
Every new version is just that little bit bloatier (I assume it can file your taxes in the next version), crashier and slower.
Nowadays I need at minimum two cups of coffee and reading my mail before I am ready for the days frustration of waiting for the solution to open.3
Funny how Windows says "Your PC ran into a problem" on the bluescreen note nowadays. Your PC. Huh.3
What are your thoughts about Symfony VS Laravel?
I prefer Laravel. It is much simpler than Symfony but most enterprises are using Symfony. However Laravel is keeping up also (gaining a lot of traction and users).
Laravel = Symfony on Steroids
I wonder why so many people prefer Laravel?
Who's a hardcore Symfony user here? I experienced using both but I prefer Laravel.
Right now I'm studying NodeJS, Express, Angular as it is more popular than Symfony. Also most requiremetns in job posting nowadays.6
For completely nonsensical projects I propose a new metric. Instead of counting how much code is covered with tests, I propose to count how many tests are actually testing the code. They really write more tests than code nowadays3
why the fucking fuck is it so hard finding keyboards with NORMAL enter/return keys nowadays?
should i google for it first? am i supposed to press it on a fucking microscope? should I buy a big fucking nuclear missile launch style enter key on a separate USB cable eventually?13
Staying away from social media is quite harder nowadays since it has become quite bad habit. And overcoming this habit is going to take quite a lot of serious efforts and dedication3
Yeah, so when you create an account just about anywhere nowadays, you need to choose a strong password. Fair enough. But then, some sites/services/systems require a second password, sort of a password hint as an extra security for retrieving your first password in case you forget it. Well OK...That hint question just becomes very *in*secure when you must choose from some extremely stupid presets like "In which town were you born?" or "What was your mother's maiden name?", all of which are trivia that for most people can be easily googled, or looked up on facebook ffs. And these "in which town did this or that happen?" questions? As there is only one town in my country it's not a long shot that I was born in Mariehamn, met my partner in Mariehamn and had my first job in Mariehamn. Security questions for imbecils.4
Searched for JS/NodeJs frameworks.
Read the Docs for a couple of minutes and run some examples.
*Opens* CV / Linkedin to update Skillset.
So with the count of JS/Nodejs Frameworks, they probably have lots skills listed in their CV.2
An old visual basic 6.0 handbook someone gave me many years ago.
I really liked working on VB6.0 and then moving to .NET 2008.
Nowadays, I love and do web development.
What is the problem with nowadays colleges? So many of the programmers I know know absolutely nothing regarding encodings and such.
It's pretty nice to see people resorting to hexadecimals to show their Latin characters in HTML instead of simply learning about bloody UTF8
Most of the time staying at home nowadays is simply staring at screens.
Staring at the laptop screen while working
Staring at the phone screen in free time and breaks
And staring at the TV while having lunch/dinner
Eye Opticians are going to get a lot of appointments soon.1
Neighbour/Family Friend/Anyone with a Computer:" So what are you doing nowadays then son?"
Me: "Working full time now as a computer programmer"
(PC owner): "Ah well me interweb and printer has packed up and keeps flashing these lights..."
The term "CPU" is stupid nowadays, what even is "central", when there are entire server farms primarily employing GPUs.
I propose "GPP" - General Purpose Processor - as a much more descriptive name instead.3
Looks like there are new horribly regurgitated packages in python nowadays which somehow my boss keeps finding I don't know how , which have shorter commands that take more and more time to run because they are just attaching these smaller tags to bigger tags and so on.
And my boss doesn't understand that there's such a thing called as overhead time ffs and it takes the same fucking time to run that same shit and maybe more because the new packages don't have a proper fucking API.2
I love the logic that underlies algorithm. But nowadays I fear that this is almost disappeared, now programming a software is 5% logic and 95% read system specificactions, documentation, implement third part solutions, think about who developed the system thought it had to be and rant because you don't understand it. I like to solve math problems using algorithms rather than deal with user interactivity, for example. Yes, all this is pointless, but sometimes I miss the exercises that I did at school or in "IT Olympiad"
If html and css are not really considered as programming languages, then how do we call the job? I've 'coded' the design? I've front-end designed the design? I've 'sliced' the design? (last one is sure old fashioned enough to exist..)
p.s. and while front-end devs nowadays are required to have angular, react, etc as their skillset, I feel like html and css are also shifting to be required for designers..1
Another leetcode interview down. I really appreciate the options to choose your own language nowadays; being forced to use C to figure out byte gaps is like being forced to clean the freeway with a toothbrush!1
What is the use of Java nowadays besides Android? I rarely see Desktop apps written in Java and backends are developed more efficientl with django, node.js ,etc... just think about it setting up spring boot and all the warnings and errors...4
Any Typo3 devs around here?
I want to know why would one go for this cms nowadays?? I had to deal with it for almost 3 years and cant figure out why it is still used :| does it really have any pros compared to other cms? words cant describe my hate for typo3 right now - and since we have more than enough of swear words on DevRant i wont go into detail :) (in my defence i dont have that much experience with cms‘s)6
What I should be doing: Playing around with it and working my way up, usually by reading the docs and putting together a "tutorial" in my head.
What I actually do: Get overhyped think of theost complicated thing possible and figure things out bit-by-bit
Meh, I do both nowadays. Slowly buys surely.1
When I first got started in web development I had to think really hard to write code to solve real world problems. It was rewarding and creative process. Nowadays most of my time is spent just trying to get bloated frameworks and plugins to play nice with one another! I hope the pendulum swings back at some point.
I was checking my work Inbox and the first thing that I saw was a recruiter email.
So, let's check, is this my personal email, no.
Hmmm, maybe this is a prank or a test? check email domains and everything looks legit.
It seems that recruiters want to get developer attention at all cost nowadays. :D
I've stumbled upon some sources (mostly C/C++ and Pascal) during reorganizing backups in home LAN from 25+ years ago. Hell, I've used to be better coder then (code is more optimized and cleaner).
Perhaps it is just hardware (much, much more powerful) and choice of languages/libraries/frameworks I use nowadays?!3
I'm really beginning to hate css3 and all the new WebKit style effects. They are literally making loads of sites unusable imo.
Why, every time a page loads, does everything need to slowly animate/transition in. It's sooooooo annoying.
It's nearly as bad when Jquery first made it easy to fade events in.
I'm such a fan nowadays of I fussy websites where the content just displays.6
I recently changed my phone's and browser's default language to German, and I still find it hard to bear all those crappy sentences and wordings. Are these all done by "machine learning" nowadays? Or don't they teach language proficiency in schools anymore?7
Gone are the days where i was pissed of at the shitty and expensive internet service.
Today I'm subscribed to a mobile data that is actually unlimited and throttle free with speed ~ 8 Mbps ( pretty good compared to other options) for mere $18 for 30 days. On top of that, i get 1 GB 4G data everyday from second operator.
It is all getting wasted because i don't get time to watch or play things i download.
Nowadays i find myself downloading just because i can...1
Mom thinks I'm a hacker/computer repair man that is available 24/7. My mom literary thinks she will get virus by opening her front door and is afraid of computers because of the media. My dad used to know some little things but since I started to take care of it he stopped learning and caring about it. Nowadays he doesn't think I do anything and just sit on my ass looking at videos or something.
I really like the fact that he approached perl with similar ideas like in the early days of programming.
He also seems like a down to earth guy.
It is kind of sad that perl isn't used as much nowadays.
Like tsunami? Nah I was still a student back then.
Nowadays, meetings and appointments.
Few years ago was flood and frequent black out.
More than 5 years ago, it was flood, black out and slow connection.2
Jacob Nielsen is probably the individual who has influenced me the most. Code is just a mean to an end nowadays and the really fun part is finding out how to help people with the program you are building.
Guys.. i am currently pursuing BCA , and i am also learning web development with Html, css,js, jQuery, bootsrap. But i see the popularity of react nowadays.. So should i must learn react or first learn simple js or jQuery first as always?7
I honestly have to say that nowadays, the only company I trust with my information is Apple. If I ever get a voice controlled speaker at home it'll definitely be from Apple.4
Why the fuck do I have to complete situational strength tests related to commercial shit when I'm applying for a Software Developer role? What the fuck is up with companies nowadays? This is why it's a good idea to be your own boss and either do freelance or make your own brand, because these interviewers know jack shit about technology and software and you cannot express your passion nor your knowledge. I'm sick of how bad the employment process is for software developers who are looking for jobs after graduation.
Don't ever give you work mail when you create an account to download a profiler , that decision is chasing me for the last 4 years , stalking saleswoman even came to the office without letting us know and nowadays I get freak mails from them
I'm pretty sure we don't need to use brackets and semicolons anymore. Newer versions of gcc bitch when you mess up tabs, which shouldn't matter in C/C++ because of brackets/semicolons, so why require the tabs and newlines?
On the flipside, if we're requiring tabulation and newlines nowadays, why use brackets and semicolons? Just Python it up and you won't have issues where you mess up and add/omit a semicolon/bracket and break EVERYTHING!
"It's so you can write it all on one line"
I have yet to meet anyone that masochistic.6
Programming lesson #8
Nowadays I write tasks for the next day at the end of my shift in the sticky notes app.
That way it's easier to start off for the next day without trying to remember what tasks were remaining from the previous day.
If tasks are greater in number then it's good to go for external task tracking tools. But for me keeping track of just 2-3 tasks is easier by using simple sticky notes app.2
What type of technology is used nowadays in IT companies when it comes to storing, changing, deleting and reading data?
Is SQL still a thing or is it outdated?15
The more years go by, the more people get sensitive and butthutt by everything around them. Can't swear in public nowadays because someone will get offended lmao.1
It should be at night (after 9/10pm; I work better at night anyway), headphones on, music blasting (heavy metal nowadays), alone, preferably no distractions, but now that I am at home for xmas holidays I have to be on the lookout for my parents calling me. When I go back to uni I can eliminate that variable from this equation and so I should be in the zone for longer. Hopefully 😅
Started with Basic back in the early '90s, then tried quickBasic that came with the new version of msdos.
Later in the college we learned Pascal, Cobol, C and a little C++.
The languages I'm writing nowadays I've learned as I went... Most of them script languages as perl, php, python and bash. And C/C++ occasionally.
And js too1
I just realized: People bitching about JS standard library, bundle size, need to use polyfills etc - is useless IMO. We need to start viewing transpilers as compilers and overall JS ecosystem like we are developing something in ActionScript Flash/Java Applet and exporting it for use inside browsers. And forget about "bad parts" of standard clean JS overall. See clean JS like it's as bad as it was in the past. (because without polyfills you still don't have most of the major es6 features in the IE browsers)
In the past we needed Flash plugins, Java plugins for applets, and they had size way larger than average JS bundle nowadays.
What you think?2
I wonder if there is any technical issues that prohibit the creation of open source websites.
By "web sites" I do not consider CMS like Drupal or word press, but rather entire end web site sources.
In fact anything (frontend, backend) except database content that contain user data and credentials.
Not for reusability purposes like CMSs, but simply for transparency and community development purposes, like almost any open source end application.
I agree that a web server is much more exposed than a classic desktop app, as it has lots of targetable private data and internet public access. But for some non-critical purpose this seems to be affordable in exchange of better code review, allowing a community to help improve a tool it uses, and better (not perfect though) transparency (which is an increasingly relevant question nowadays, mainly towards personal data usage).6
Do you have any images/memes for `bus factor == 1` situations ? Any devopsreactions ?
Strikes at me too many times nowadays :)
Not this one with yellow bus :D It's ugly
Question about Game Development:
I want to create myself a boardgame (Dog aka Tock aka Tuck). It should run on a Android Tablet.
What suggestions do you have?
- Is there some good framework for a native App?
- Should I create a WebApp, if that's the thing nowadays?19
I was talking to someone recently who organizes a conference and told me that some people complained that the speaker list wasn't diverse enough because he had only 2 women and no racial minorities. Apparently the numerous Asian (Indian and Oriental don't count), nor the the organizer who is in a minority. Only African (specifically black) counts a d's minority nowadays. We now have a world with I finite gender identities and only 2 races. 😰5
Nowadays, regretting has become more common for me after any update!
(New #Sublime update broke my previously working bitbake plugin!)
Guys. I'm doing a fairly large scale which will need to serve a few thousands of customers. It's the first time I'm planning to deploy an express node.js to VPS. Want to ask you, shall I look for VPS which have support to MongoDB, or is it okay to use atlas - MongoDB cloud for the user database? I feel a bit weird about having the server on one cloud and the DB on another one. Or is it normal nowadays?7
PHP guys: Magento is so rampant nowadays. Are you currently using or studying it? If not, do you plan on studying / using it even if it is not a job requirement? 🤔9
What's the simplest way to deploy a small node project to a private root server, possibly dockerized?
I feel like there are thousands of possibilities nowadays, like Ansible and so on. But is there something more in the the KISS way? Apart from just hacking a bash script together of course, it should be portable (and work on windows too).1
As an android dev when I inherited a shitty project thats when I realized what really means to write readable and most importantly testable code. Codebase I inherited wasnt even really that bad it was quite readable, but boy it was not suited for any unit/instrumented tests. im talking spaghetti code.
Nowadays I refactor apps to make sure they are testable instead of spending weeks writing tests for a shitty codebase which was done without thinking about separation of concerns. Clients hate the extra couple weeks on top of request but what can I do, if they want tests they need to work with TDD approach or give extra time for refactors.
What would you say are good sites to write articles (such as for describing small projects/hacks) on nowadays? I’m thinking what is in now, Medium, Hackernoon?1
Windows apparently does reboots for updates n stuff outside your normal time of usage nowadays.
Windows apparently also thinks that your normal usage shouldn't be over 12 hours.
So now i have to decide if I'm more in the mood for random updates in the morning when i need to get shit done (ugh) or at night when i have finally time to relax.
Hey guys, ran into some thermal throttling issues with my i7-7700k (100c basically all the time, 800-2000mhz speeds) so I'm looking for a new cpu, anyone down to help?
I'm looking to run 1440p 144hz eventually so I don't mind laying down an average sum of cash for one, just need some suggestions.
Is it worth the switch to AMD? Every forum I look at online has someone buying AMD nowadays
I've tried fixing this i7-7700k by remounting the cooler, reapplying thermal paste, changing BIOS settings, making sure the pump is working, but nothing seems to help.82
Calling C a "high level language" is complete bullshit. 99,9% of all code is written in C or higher level languages than C.
What a "high level language" is not objectively definable. So this arbitrary division divides programming languages in two halves of astronomically different sizes.
It may have been a good decision in the 70s but it's completely off nowadays. I propose to draw the line between languages with manual and languages with automatic memory management.10
I remember the times where playing video games was a mystery and not everything had to be understood. Nowadays games just don't feel the same to me anymore1
Back then as teenager meddling around with QBasic I intuitively realized that you could instruct this machine to do whatever I want - now I could stick the Turing-Church-Hypothesis label to that notion, but I think the experience and feeling of that potential power of programming goes without abstract algebra.
The problem of course: What to do with it? First thing we programmed was a digital telephone book. A chess program? - That's still the thing with apps nowadays I suppose. What should it do? Steer a nuclear power plant or recognize cats on pictures?
(As I didn't know what to do with it back then, I turned to physics and mathematics only to get a job all the university stuff was pointless for but required the skills I taught myself as a 17 year old.)
I dont know much about coding or programming.I am now intrested in app developing.I am now trying to learn c++.Anybody please tell me which language I have to study and which softwares or languages are used nowadays for app development.5
My friends think I'm a genius programmer , coz he saw many side projects that I've made, actually he has no clue i was just git clone or google or stackoverflow putting different piece of stuff together lol. I think that's what we all do nowadays lol!1
