Girl : I like dangerous men.
Me : I didn't run test cases while committing my changes last night.
Girl : my hero!
Me : *wakes up from the dream*14 -
I had a dream where I got a job at SpaceX. Long story short, rockets fell from the sky, people died, and Musk got really angry. I don't think I'll be applying at SpaceX anytime soon.7

Last night I had a dream about a bug and I woke up with a solution. When I got to the office and tried it out it worked...I have heard about this happening before but this is the first time I have experienced it!11

Hey guys.
For you guys that are getting depressed looking for such nice setups, please remember something...
The Facebook effect:
You only see the tip of the Iceberg, the nice things, you can't see all the shit that other people won't show.
Yes, a few have some dream setups, but most of us are lucky to have two monitors or decent hardware...
What counts is that you can work in your machine... And take the posts as Ideas for your own dream setup, when you can afford it.
Mine (Ill show when I clean this shit up) is good enough and took me 2 years to get the minimum when I could afford it.11 -
My dream project is to work on a Hollywood grade raytracing engine (Pixar Renderman, Disney Hyperion,...) I have done some hobby grade ones like to produce the image here6
-
Fuck yeah!
6 monitors are success-fucking-fully running on my setup.
Fun detail is that WITH the official AMD driver, one screen wasn't turning on and one had a weird resolution but WITHOUT it, it works completely fine!
Yes, it runs completely fine on Linux (Kubuntu).
Finally have my dream setup.42 -
I have just landed my dream job. Coming from a background of java and python, I applied for a C++ heavy company... The interview process was centred on algorithms and I passed it. Now I get to learn the language I have always wanted to learn from pretty hardcore devs while I am getting paid. One of the best fucking days of the 21 years I have been alive for.3

Every developer dream:
- Cup of coffee
- Laptop
- Fast internet connection.
Really, I am able to not see the light again with this.20 -
I made a small Mac App some weeks ago and I just made it to 8th place on the Mac App Store in Germany.
This has always been a dream for me 😁10 -
I had been trying to fix a bug for the whole day, I decided to sleep for a while. During my sleep, I dreamt I was working on the code and I fixed the issue. I woke up, tried what I did in my dream and it Worked! I was so confused and happy17

I had my first nightmare in years:
I was at work, and suddenly saw that my NS has changed for my personal domain. I also saw that the domain has transferred to another provider and a company had bought it and had it for sale for $7000.
I woke up, but it took 10 minutes before I realized it was just a dream.3 -

Now that I have time to approach my ultimate dream ( being the pro penrester ) , asked a hacker for a road map and he gave me (U'll rarely see such open hackers that share knowledge :) )
Surprisingly I've been familiar with all the topics but being the most pro , requires u to be pro in every single topic .
Guess what ? I'm starting from basic linux commands all over again 😂

Coding destroyed my life. I used to be tripping and seeing flowers, now i feel like media breakpoints,i used to dream about jungle, now i dream about creating components,i used to have a few problems, now i have nothing else but problems, and here i am at 7am ranting for the first time on a nerd application which i didnt get the rants about... But now i laugh...
Where is this going????5 -
You know you've been coding too much when you literally dream a solution to a bug you've been working on and wake up in the morning to realize you fixed it in your sleep...5

The Matrix, minus the oppressive AI overlord, so I can jack into it and learn all the frameworks necessary to build said dream project.4

Spending my 23rd birthday in a server room 700 km away from home, discussing the requirements for app deployment. Yep. Every dev's dream.15

I have a dream
That we will live in a world where we can download Xcode, Visual Studio (not the xamarin bullshit) and Android Studio, all on the same machine, under one OS, without any hassle, and live a peaceful life, till our death...18 -
That moment when you wake up from a dream with a smile on your face, because you met the girl of your life there.
But then, few minutes later, you realize that it was just a dream. And to that comes that, I can barely remember anything about her.4 -
Last night I had a dream that I met some girl. We immediately clicked but the only thing I remember besides this is that she coded in Vim. 😁😁😁
-
Just got moved from contractor to full time at my dream company halfway through my contract. On top of the world right now 😀5

Today I woke up at 4 a.m. because in a dream I've thought that I had make a huge mistake in my code yesterday. So I've turn on the PC, checked the code and... everything just fine! F**king brain!7
-
I once figured out a fix for my bug in my dream. Luckily, I woke up at 2 in the morning and wrote the fix down and went back to sleep. The next morning, the whole thing felt like a dream.3

Although not the best setup I've seen on Devrant, let's say this is a designer's/software engineer's dream come true :)
27" iMac + 2 27" thunderbolt displays10 -
Do you code in your dream too?
Cuz, I do. Mostly it's about some functionality I am not able to implement in real life, at the end of my dream I feel like I have got a really great logical solution but when I wake up it doesn't make any sense.
(Excuse me if the image is a repost)8 -
I am a student. A Geospatial Engineering student. I made a demo Cordova app mapping incident spots on OSM., now my fellow undergrads think I can hack NSA, program a satellite, build all their dream websites and apps. The College Department wants me to lead an in-house photogrammetric programmable drone project. If they ask I'll say yes... yes I can! shit.😂5
-
I just had a dream about how to squash a bug I was encountering in my app. I immediately woke up, fixed the bug, and cleaned up my code. I thought this only happened in movies.3

I'm so so happy to have joined devRant: it gave me lots of motivation to work on my personal projects. In the last two days I worked more on an old dream/project than I did in the last year. TWO. DAYS.
Don't know for how long this motivation will last, but - for now - thank you so much, people :')3 -
I had a dream last night about how to fix a bug in my code.
I couldn't sleep the rest of the night because I was too excited about fixing it.
Plus side: the fix worked this morning.
Down side: ive drank so much coffee I can smell color5 -
I was so busy studying for final exams that I forgot the Google code-in challenge existed.
I only completed two tasks before I forgot about it haha.
Rip. There's goes my dream of being a finalist. At least there's always next year ;)4 -

Dev: Sir, this is a Wendy’s.11 -
That feeling when you dream about the perfect solution of the programming problem you just had, you get up and just start coding for hours.
-
How weird is this?
I was working on a project. I wasn't able to find solution for a particular sub problem. It was late so I thought of sleeping.
I dreamt about the problem. I solved it in my dream. When I woke up in the morning, I remembered the solution and I solved it.4 -
Me: "hey CEO, that product that's only had 3 devs on for a couple of years has grossed a million brit bucks 2 years running. Any chance we could get some laptops for the team that aren't heavy as fuck and 4-5 years old. Maybe some monitors that aren't tiny and dull as fuck?"
CEO: "no"
Also, what's people's dream dev gear?9 -
" I wish to have a job where I can sit all day and still have a salary " said the 9 years old me not really considering the consequences. 11 years old later, here I am with *a dream come true* along with a constantly killing back and knees pain at my 20's writing some java codes.4
-
My supervisor once said he had a dream about me in the bathtub (after getting his teeth pulled and being on pain killers). Still was creepy none the less, like I didn't need to know. Lol.7
-
I guess I'm not the only one who sometimes code in my dreams while sleeping. Maybe it's because working as a programmer is like a dream come true.4

Had a bad dream about python, woke up screaming "THERES A PYTHON ON THE FLOOR"
My girlfriend was so confused because she's not a programmer2 -
Pandemic achievement: I slept early and woke up early too! Fuck yeah!

Normal people dream about shit before they go to sleep.
I, on the other hand, try to formulate a hypothesis that I'm already stuck on for 3 business days, thereby giving myself anxiety, henceforth failure to sleep.
I'm just perfect! 👌🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️29 -
Over the past couple of days I did nothing but focus on programming. Well, today I fell asleep while working, became semi-lucid and managed to access root directory of my brain and went into a folder called "dreams" and viewed my yesterday's dream.
That felt mental when I woke up. I wonder if it really was yesterday's dream or was it my dream thinking it's yesterday's dream? Can I reprogram myself? Damn. Does that mean I did a reverse Matrix?3 -
I'd be living a second dream that I still want to realize. I'd be a hardstyle/raw hardstyle (rawstyle) producer and dj. I'd love to be at the same level of a few artists like Malice, Rooler, Radical Redemption, Regain =)5

The British summer results in restless nights and broken sleep filled with nightmares.
One particular dream last night involved my friends messing around with a ouija board and they begin asking in questions. I remain sceptical and tell them to ask it to reveal the solution to the issues I'm having retrofitting a legacy web app with a new design.
The board disconnected itself. Hell had no answer. -
After lots of interviews and waiting and hard work just got something similar to my dream job.
I am so happy. Thanks for all your success rants they gave me the motivation to keep going when it seems there was no hope.
Remember everyone just keep going, keep trying, keep pushing.
Happy ranting.2 -

Let's start by saying: God do I love programming and hate work!
My dream job would be a place where I get to write quality code for something that's actually useful and makes sense to people (or a group of people) without all the usual job bullshit; all the politics, fucking useless hours of meetings, the pretentious ass holes, and the useless mindless product owners with good pay to live comfortably and some organization (not being a complete disaster). It's only a dream though...5 -

Started a new job a month ago. I’m the only real frontend developer here. I come from a company with 10+. Now i’m working with a old ux guy. Mr. UX teached me the usage of a styleguide. This styleguide is a fucking mess. The legacy code is a fucking mess. They way of working, up for improvement.

Yesterday before going to bed, I got rid of and made sure my program has no more errors so that I can implement other features in the morning.
Today when I compiled the same program again(without any additional implementation) I got more errors then I solved in night. I guess the part when I got rid of errors was just a part of my dream!! -
I've been been in consulting doing systems implementations for about a decade. I just started a new e-commerce project with perhaps the most agreeable client I've ever encountered - in fact they're extremely eager to make my job easier. Just today one of the stakeholders, completely seriously, uttered the phrase "maybe we don't need to care about IE".
After ten years living thru every client cliche imaginable over and over again I now find I don't know how to trust. Their acceptance of best practices and my recommendations is almost unnerving...3 -
My biggest dev career dream is to have a useful SaaS with a solid user base and then reduce work to 40-50% and use the rest of the time for hobby projects and a family.1

i dreamed a parallel reality
not even fking joking rn
it was MORE REAL THAN THE REALITY WE LIVE HERE
IT WAS LITERALLY LIKE I FKING LIVED IN ANOTHER REALM
this has never happened to me before ever
this shit woke me up at about 4:30 AM and i couldnt sleep for the rest of the fking day
i slept for 1h 30min
after i woke up it took me a couple of minutes to figure out if that realm was the base reality or if this current realm the reality we live in is the real base reality....
i wass fuckjgm lost !
there were 2 identical scenes that happened to me in the first and second realm
but both scenes had a different outcome, the realm i was in the dream had such a good outcome that it felt too good to be real BECAUSE I FKING DREAMED OF EXPERIENCING THAT I ACHIEVED HALF OF MY DREAM, WITHIN THE DREAM
And when i woke up and realized i returned back to this fucking realm i was so goddamn disappointed that i just wanted to go back to fkig sleep and just.. die
what the fuck
my brain is overwhelmed with bullshit and lies so much that i can not distinguish what is fake and what is real
fuck, eeverything in this existence12 -

My biggest dev regret was that I've followed other people's dream.
I lost precious time into trying being the "good kid" for my family and support them in their time of need.
Now I'm considered old for a starter and getting a dev job becomes harder with each passing day.4 -
Well, I got it. The new job that is so from December first I really am a C# developer :)
We just have to agree on the salary. I will at least get more then I have now (as support technician) and well it's kinda a dream come true.2 -
My wet dream is pressing tab when entering a path in cmd.exe and it suggests folders/files relative to the already entered path.

Had a dream last night...
My grandmother gave me a flip phone as a present. My first thought was "really?"
But after flipping it open, I found that it had some gaming buttons (A, B, Start, etc). Also, it had a place to insert Gameboy games.
It was the most 90's/early 2000's phone ever.2 -
Well I have a normal dream except I can see the people in it as an object with properties all over them. When they are in a bad mood I tried to debug them2

Well I got offered a position as the CTO of a local charity but the funding fell through. That job sounded pretty sweet.
Otherwise my dream is honestly not having one, like in a situation where I didn't need the money. I'd not working and basically just spend my time volunteering for stuff at my church -
I had a weird dream last night: at the office, my co-worker sliding a wide rubber band over my cup of coffee up and down 🤔☕5

I think I've been doing too much Android programming in the last three days.
Had a lucid dream last night where I couldn't wake up until I figured out how to set up an inter-thread latch that would allow me to process through a shit ton of data points in parallel without duplication or skipping errors in the most efficient manner (effectively no blocking). We're talking several hundred lines of code. Slept 14 hours last night, I heard my alarm but didn't wake up. When I finally got up, I did what I did in my dream and it worked better than the existing code.
Turns out my brain is great at Java evaluation now, I guess.4 -

Got my first job last week as a junior gameplay programmer. Dream job 😁
Well, more like a dream position than the actual dream job.
Proprietary engine and a new language are kinda hard to wrap my head around, but I've been having so much fun that by the time 4 rolls around I usually don't notice it and stay for an hour or so more.
I love it!4 -
Last night I had a very strange dream. I should point out in advance, all of this is fictional and none of it really happened.
I was looking at an answer I posted on Stack Exchange.. for the sake of argument, let's say it was Super User. I remember the question being about volume limiting, which is actually an issue I and many other iOS 14.2/14.3 users have been facing in the last few months. Apparently it has been partially addressed in 14.4.
In the real world I fixed the issue by jailbreaking the phone and unloading the healthd service, while in the dream that was the answer I had documented on Super User. In reality I have documented it in several other places, but not there.
Fast-forward a couple of days in the dream where the answer was posted, and I was now looking at a reply. I don't remember the exact details of it, but apparently in the answer I had posted something about my network.. a screenshot from the iPhone? And the comment on it basically said something along the lines of "your answer is shit, and you probably have a very basic internet connection with default settings". I was really upset by that, as my network is actually quite advanced (on account of being a sysadmin).
Then I woke up and realized that it was all just a dream...4 -
Today
I was working on a project for the uni, went to have a nap and take a break.
The problem I was coding java in my dream.

Cellphone sizes keep on increasing. The only phone under 5 inches that are worth buying are all iPhones.
I've been using Android phones since HTC dream. Looks like I'll have no choice but to switch to iPhone this or next year.
What phone do you use? Do you like big phones? Why?
I have small hands :(27 -
It had been too long that I had a nightmare that I wished I never had. I had one this early morning.
I was in a foreign metropolitan city with public transport trains, skyscrapers and everything. I had no phone, no cash, no card. I could have asked help from the people I see on the street but in the dream I missed that notion. I was fine for first few hours (dream time) walking along just by myself and gradually the panic mood sunk in. I was alone with no help right in the middle of broad day light among people at a busy city.
Now that I have written it down, it doesn't sound that scary at all. There was no ghost nor paranormal activity involved, no accident, no scary height, no fire, no drowning, nothing really scary at all.
I was totally scared shitless in that dream though.4 -

So...
After about a month and a half of lots of interviews with 2 different companys, BOTH of them offered me a job last night.
One is a big digital agency in my country (~2000 employees) the other one is a smaller development firm (~200 employees).
It feels sad to have to deny the smaller one but the bigger one is a dream job for me due to the fact that thet focus a lot more on new tech compared to the smaller one.
But i have never been happier in my life!
It is a dream come true!3 -
Anyone who has lost track of time when using a computer knows the propensity to dream, the urge to make dreams come true and the tendency to miss lunch.

During my studies on the university, while preparing for the linear algebra exam I had a dream where I was a matrix in the Jordan normal form.5

One of the constants in my live is that I cannot type in dreams, no touchpad or keyboard will ever output more than three coherent logically keys before it turns into gibberish. Other interaction works, but no input for computers or phones.
Today I dreamed of assisting a guy to shutdown the Linux Server I set up, via remote. The dream totally derailed and was a bit boring. My dream characters realized that something is up and used a different keyboard. No dice. Visually it looked like Thai or so without the appropriate fonts.
Sometimes I am really wondering what my dream director is thinking.5 -
Good Morning Devs. Funny thing... Why was I dreaming about subnetting 😂. I literally remember in the dream about telling someone to count zeros. I woke up like 🤔🤔. Zeros...zeros. Was I just explaining to someone how to figure the total IP addresses and Hosts....🤭🤦♂️🤦♂️

You know how you wake up from a bad dream?
I just woke up in the middle of the night, without any memory on any dream, but rather two people talking to each other on discord.
All I can remember was:
A: (garbled) you know when you ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+G?
B: (interrupts the other) 1,2,3... yeah when you want to move the windows to the other screen?
Both started to laugh.
I fully woke up, got a glass of water and went back to sleep. I’ve never, ever used that shortcut in any program.4 -
Not purely dev related but I’d love to make a living out of creating my own products/startups. The dream.3

Maybe asshats will disappear from my life.
Well, one can dream, can't I?2 -

The best experience I had as a student was attending a few masters degree classes at a computational arts course, it was awesome being the only developer in the middle of a lot of art graduated students who were learning to code. Awesome exchange experience, final projects were art exhibitions with interactive art. We used Arduinos, Rpi, Openframeworks, Processing. I miss that and I still think that my dream job will look like that. -
Do you know how to spoil my weekend? Interview me on Friday afternoon for my dream position and tell me that "you'll let me know Monday latest".
Guess who couldn't mentally switch off over the weekend?4 -
I got to tell someone about the dream that I had today, but no one in my real life will give a shit, so I'll say it here.
I saw myself flying in my dream. Where it got so good was, I detected that it was a dream and kept going. I legit thought to myself "I can't take damage cuz it's my dream" and started doing maneuvers like diving downwards to speed up and pulling myself up.
It was almost like I was playing GOD mode in a videogame with me as the protagonist. I could fly whatever speed I wanted and do whatever moves I wanted. All the while knowing fully that this is a dream.
I don't understand why but I'm so happy about it, today.1 -
Not joining the weekly rant.
But had a haunted dream last night and it was definitely weird.
Dreamed that I was at my childhood house and opened the door of my room. Found literally nothing. Just empty room. Got scared (for whatever reason) and run to my mom. Came back to the room with her. Opened the door. Everything was in it's place; bed, chair, table etc.
I didn't watch any scary movie for the past few months. There was one scary dream few months/weeks ago and I wrote about it. And now this. 🤔1 -
If you are a dream stealing cunt then kindly fuck off. I don't know you, I don't want to know you. Climb into whatever hole you came out of and just eat shit.
Nothing in this life raises my ire more than people who hate on others daring to dream. The haters don't add to society and are just stealing air.2 -
I dreamt about bugs this night. Not software bugs, but actual bugs, like a centipede that enjoyed attaching itself to the inside of my palm and such... Not sure if dev related or not, not a good dream either way :/5

Had a bad dream one night that my bosses were going to run me through the ringer on some stuff that I needed to do better.
A day later, exactly that happened.
It would’ve been nice if my premonition could have had a few days gap between dream and reality so I’d have had some time to fix things first. -
if being a developer was a dream to me, it was because I knew I would get to read formal and lengthy RFCs from the IETF.
Video games? Alcohol? Fucking? Ain't got shit on reading one of these things. -
I'm down to write multi dimensional Git. I'm tired of losing the code that I wrote in my dream to go up in smoke every time when I woke up.
I just want to commit and push it to the dimension that I'm livin'. So that I'll have access to the code that I wrote in my dream.3 -
my wife is setting up her new phone that arrived today. maybe i am a bit jealous. on the other hand i dont know how using devrant, reddit and duckduckgo justifies a new phone. better save this for my dream computer.7

Today I woke up from this craziest dream.
We were in France and there was a younger Mike Patton (who was french) speaking and apparently teaching french to an African girl.
The next scene he's in the back seat of what's apparently a taxi, and brags about how perfectly he can speak English. Besides that I see him playing the guitar.
In the last moments of the dream, however - and confusingly - the song Rusty Cage by SoundGarden starts playing loudly in the background. And that's when I found Patton is also a hacker.
Thinking about this part of the dream minutes aftger waking up, I found it to be the funniest, though not the craziest thing I ever dreamed.
Whereas I tried for hours to edit the configuration files of a tractor demolition game (some sort of Vigilante 8, but with tractors), he gets angry on a lady for an reason unknown to me, and in his moment of rage, manages to jump her houses' fence, surprisingly to edit her /etc/resolv.conf file - as if it was the most evil deed in the world.
In this final part, with Rusty Cage still playing very loudly, I find out me and my sister where watching this scene on TV (apparently patton was also an actor). After that, I comment to my sister in a grave tone: "Well, this guy is dangerous, maybe she should build a higher fence".
Then I wake up.
Although a crazy dream, it clearly addresses the fact I sometimes try to be a lot of things at the same time, and how this overwhelms me...1 -
Not exactly a dream abour coding but my favorite instructor in college.
I dreamt the secret police came to arrest him on campus since his methods teaching cod were unorthodoxed.
As they were leading him away I was screaming and crying - “He’s the best teacher here, what are you doing!”

my C# dream:

I just have a weird dream.
I am talking to a person and I enter into a dream land for a few minute (I think it a few minute) since I am really tired.
The weird thing is I am still having a conversation with the same person in my dream about the same topic. Now I am awake and that person doesn't notice that I was asleep (Good job my unconsciousness, good job my auto reply system).
Now here is a problem.I cannot distinguish the dream from reality and the detail of the conversation merge together. For instance I don't remember what is the correct price of the item since the price of the item differ from my dream and real world. The price of the item may be 2000 or 1800 , which one is it?
There are also various details which merge together.2 -
When they ask you what you want to do for the next three months.
You give them an answer then poof.
Those are the list of your dream work.1 -
Today I had a weird dream. The mars was collapsing to earth. Weird part was when everybody panicking and screaming I was watching it getting bigger and bigger every second. I was like "woah, this is amazing". I knew there was no point being scared because everyone will die anyway. I embraced death and enjoyed my last moments. That was realy weird experience.2

I always dreamed to live in USA. Waking at the morning and see those huge buildings, eating pancakes while I cover myself from the cold. For a while I forgot this my old dream of travel from my Portuguese home to somewhere on Texas or California. Since I am in my last year of university, after being student worker and after 6years being graphic designer and 3 them as full stack developer, I trully believe in doing this...5

I had this dream lastnight and all I remember is typing:
cd ..

Into a terminal. I want to know why I needed to delete the folders xD3 -
I dream about discovering weird side effects on certain built-in functions way too often.
I usually implement those myself but without side effects. All in the dream. -
My dream project is to build my own analytics system and project on monitors which basically says everything live users on site, what every user is doing... where my site is failing etc...
Fortunately I'm solely working on it and implementing in the company I work. So, in couple of months it is going to be realistic.
#awesome #analytics2 -
Not exactly a dream, but during an internship where I tried to engineer a way to listen in on Bluetooth communications, I went so deep down the rabbit hole that I once half-asleepedly thanked my girlfriend for "keeping an eye on the Bluetooth channels for me, because these little twerps just keep jumping around all over the place"

#wk6 coolest bug: it was first year CS and we were learning data structures. the assignment was a maze solver using stacks. I couldn't figure out the issue I had and went to sleep. my dream that night was in code (one of a few times it's happened) and I woke up mid-night and typed it in and it worked. slept like a baby after that.

I came across this german platform that provides rest api level access to database without the need of a backend. I’m a frontend developer and the possibilities like a wet dream. Saying bye-bye to Firestore.6

Why does my brain sabotage me? I have a weird dream that wakes me up and now I’m awake at 3am and can’t go back to sleep. I went to bed at a reasonable time because I was dead tired and this is the thanks I get?2

It has finally happened. I have escaped the land of bloated Objective-C and JabbaScript. This week I have started on another project, a full stack team working in Angular, Java, Hibernate, PostgreSQL. The dream has come true. Java it has been too long my friend.

Hey guys! So I just woke up from a dream in which I was talking with skilled programmer and he gave me awesome pro tip which I'd never realize exists!
But it was my dream so my idea. I have no idea how the f*ck this works but it's awesome. Is it just me or ?3 -
My dream project is a heavily story-driven game, with plenty of decision-making for the player and a lot of possible endings. With no money or time limits, I would make it with live action scenes. Just a great movie in which you have the final cut.

That moment when you find a function called with faulty arguments or a referece mistaken and fix it and code actually works now aaaaand you wake up.. i started to dream about the same code cause i keep rewriting it for different reasons.. what a life

I was always fascinated by Silicon Valley(the real place), it seemed like a dream workplace. But ever since I've watched Silicon Valley(the show), I have lost my faith in the place. I used to be amazed by the big people in tech, but now all that's left is skepticism.
Is it really like that in real?4 -
Heard about the Linux from scratch project. I dream of building a district from the ground up .
I think I should give it a try.
How hard will that be 🤐🤐19 -
Finish my biggest project :)
In 2017 the project was counting 60k lines of code (which doesn't look as too many) but I was able to remove some libraries and make my custom system, now the project is counting 10k lines of code :)
My dream is to open in these months -
Did some distro hopping at the weekend and ended up back in Ubuntu.
And for the most part everything is running like a dream, except MY motherfucking SQL.
Installation appears to be ok, but doesn’t let me set a root password, and throws errors like it’s cool when I try and change the root password.
Same goes for MariaDB.
All of my googling for a solution has so far failed me1 -
Here's a few:
What could be improved about devRant?
Best dev insults?
Your dev machine setup (from office space, hardware, to OS stack etc)?
Dream setup of the above?
Or we could go back to previous topics and do them again, since there are new members on devRant and new stories from old members. I particularly want to do wk30 (Best prank) again -
I have a dream, that one day I'll be able to work normally without the FUUUCKING corporate proxy blocking every shit1

Ok, i've read others rant about dreaming code, but this was a freaking nightmare.
(background: in the last few days i've been working on a small project which requires a web frontend so i'm messing around with html and css changing stuff until i get what i want)
So this night i had a weird dream, i saw the page i'm working on and i couldn't center the title, like no matter what i changed it was always a pixel off in some direction, and this went on for a lot !! It was so frustrating, at one point I became so angry in the dream that i deleted the whole project, later i woke up with the same feeling of anger towards Html/Css, i guess web dev is not a thing for me
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
Programming gave me a sense of accomplishment. The feeling of being able to dream something up, and then make that come to life, and always improving yourself as you go. What else gives you the same flexibility to change and add on to projects? All of this combined for my love of math and mechanics, and I found that programming was my true love!

Man, got a call today from a company in Hawaii to do a job similar to what I'm doing now. The salary was 50k less than I'm making here in the states, not even joking. There goes my dream... 😞2

What's the smallest size start-up company you would work for? The American dream, of course, is to own your own company. If that option were off the table, would you work as a developer for a startup company that only had 3 other employees, including the CEO?4

There are only three dev jobs:
- Hate the job
- Feel neutral
- Love the job
Two are choices that you make because of where you are in your life. The other choice you get stuck with and only stay long enough to avoid damage to your reputation.
Baby or bills? Often the middle choice is the best choice. Dream jobs come at a massive cost and risk to your personal stability.8 -
One evening I put on my Quest2 and have some fun with the Climb2. I fell off the cliff a few times. Next morning my 5yo wakes up with shitty mood and tells me he had a dream how he was on a hill and fell off. It wasva bad dream.
A few days later I was watching The Troll on Netflix. I like this king of genre so I was enjoying it. Next morning my kiddo wakes up all excited with 'daddy daddy, I've had a dream of a mountain!'. 'Did you fall off this one too' - I rush to ask. He says: 'no, but the mountain stood up and it was like a man!'
he's been asleep both times. I was with my headphones during the movie and on 1bar of volume during the climb. He's never seen neither the game nor the movie [or any troll, for that matter]. And I'm not making this up.
How... How the hell did he do that. Do we after all float in some wibbly-wobbly ether we can communicate through?4 -
today windows started updating its filesystem, I couldn't access even the screencapture! I would have lost all of my files...
And then I woke up. you bastards make me even dream about computers!1 -
Well last 2 days at my dream job and after the 8th time they've contracted me they still haven't come close to offering me a position... Do I have the right to be pissed off? Because I am! >.<2

An idea which was once your dream.
You worked very hard.
You exhausted all your time.
Your no.1 priority is your dream then family.
Your sleepless nights were comforted by naps.
You dropped out of school.
You stopped your lovely job.
Finally, you succeeded.
You brought the dream to life. Hurray!
You were very excited including the people around you.

I just had the weirdest dream ever!!
I dreamed that PHP is like cancer: It eats you slowly from within and eventually you die.
And the weird thing is that I use PHP for a project..
Maybe it's a sign?😱2 -
I have dreams where I stare at code/tables/program output, half of the problems are real and half are made up, I wake up stressed out about not solving anything and trying to remember which is the real half I need to solve.
Why can't I dream about the video games I play? I need to get a life... -
Software engineering was the only field, which was scientific in it's nature and got my interest in early teens.
I've always wanted to be a scientist and/ or do scientific research, however, this dream is still far away at this point in my career. -
This has just happened

I had a dream about the end of the world. Corona won. Almost nothing works, almost all the people are dead. But we are, with those who are still alive, chilling and having fun looking at destroyed, burning Golden Gate.7

!Dev but reading this is just depressing along with the recent NATO news....

TLDR: the party is over, it long has been and unless your priveliged or old already, we're all screwed.

At my first programming job, the codebase was a tangle of legacy web forms, MVC, templates in a content-management-system, and AngularJS. Learning the CMS was particularly stressful.
One Saturday night, after binge-watching videos of DOOM 2 speedruns and mods, I had a dream that the Icon of Sin from DOOM 2 appeared in the code, gazed at me menacingly, and lunged at me before I woke up.1 -
My dream project is happening right now! Become the ultimate programmer and learn all the programming languages2

Most of the people on LinkedIn identify themselves by their profile in their company. WTF?!
And these are the same people that try to motivate?!
There is nothing wrong in flaunting your “dream job” but almost all the people of LinkedIn do it.
What a shallow place. No wonder I get depressed whenever I am there.
Fucking fugazis!6 -
My dream is to make video games. Knowing that I learn Java at school, which langage is the most appropriate for you? My teacher, who is a java fan, told me java, of course. On internet I found c or c++, and I even found a JS framework (phaser), but the doc wasn't great.
Do you have advices ?13 -
Kinda sad that the whole "seamless iframe" thing never happened. Sandboxed ads and external embeds, what a dream.

I had this dream, We had to destroy this super mainframe who wanted some revenge because we as a programmers made a lot of mistakes in the code.
So we had to create this amazing machine with super powers and machine learning and then to go back to the past to save the world and to find me and protect me from the same machines that we created..
At the end, I died.. because the fucking machine betrayed me.1 -
Need to use new module or pattern:
1. Read the online documentation
2. Have no fu*kin clue what I just read
3. Try for 2 hours and fail.
4. Go home and sleep
5. Wake up at 3am from a fever dream with the solution to the problem
6. Go to work and implement it in 10 min
I guess I learn when I sleep -

That might seem a bit random, but I started off this year with a nightmare (a literal dream) where I've fallen victim to remote code execution, because I cloned someone's git repo.
Is such a thing even possible? The closest thing I've found was this blog
https://blog.blazeinfosec.com/attac...
(and the info on it was already worrying enough), but that shouldn't have affected my dream computer.
Some details I more or less remember:
* The execution happened right after git clone
* The uri to the repo was a custom domain (no github, gitlab or anything)
* no submodules
* GNU/Linux3 -

Why do we dream 5 minutes before waking up? (or more specifically, after the first alarm) :(

Since few days/weeks, I'm way less productive, much easily distracted, not into my job ... I'm the only dev here, mostly alone at office, and a lot of pressure on my shoulders ... Do you have some tips, to gain productivity, and have the smile back ?
PS : every single day I just dream about my current side project, but it's my job who pays the bills ..14 -
Recently I've had a lot of realistic dreams and it's awful. For example, yesterday I dreamed that I have a SoftEng lecture on Monday at 9am. The day before I dreamed that Russia defeated Ukraine and are now neighbors with Hungary. On both occasions I was later convinced that the memory fragments were true until I either received conflicting news or some unrelated trigger reminded me of the later, unrealistic parts of the dream.
I can sort of deal with the possibility that my current life is a dream and I'll eventually wake up and start over from an unspecified morning, but the possibility that while living in reality an arbitrary subset of my memories comes from dreams is much worse3 -
My dream project is one which will calm devs' atmosphere, to create a cool interface between a dev and some fucking PMs, dont really need to interact with them at the 'backend'

Best: getting a job in systems programming which was my dream since I wrote my first hello world about ten years ago.
Worst: recognizing that time isn't the restricting factor but energy, I'm often just too tired to work on side projects -

I am stuck at a job.. which is solely drag and drop.
My role title is Software Engineer just for namesake. Internally shifting to Product Team seems impossible at this organization. My aim is to work at Tech Giants.
What should be my next actions in order to achieve my dream job?
PS: I am preparing for the tech interviews2 -
A adventure game where you start as an intern and have to earn skills, you would need those skills to beat specific bosses and unlock new positions(levels). The game starts with a HR person telling you that you need to meet some requirements to be hired at tour dream job/ position and the quest is all about getting those skills/ experience...1

Holy shit my dream last night was the best I had in years. I was basically in this open world (just real life) kinda thing that felt a lot like DayZ with the atmosphere (just no zombies). We we're a lot of friends just running about. But it was also kinda an exploration dream where I went into this bunker on the airfield (I guess) and then it was more like an action horror game where I had to shoot the most disgusting creatures. Except one monster was a cute girl (yeah I don't know). The dream then shifted to cuddling and making out with this super cute girl in bed
Oh man. This dream had it all and it was crystal clear the whole time, it was just amazing
Sorry, not sorry for reading this lol7 -

What is the longest commute you would consider for a dream job? Let's take mode of transportation into consideration too.
I just got an offer for a job 2.5 hours away, but it is by train so I can code/game/sleep while riding. For a few months, I am going to try it before moving closer.4 -

Today I had a dream, not sure if I can call it a nightmare:
I was doing ReactJS + TypeScript. but no matter how much I try, I can't seem to match the type of the variable/object. The IDE ( WebStorm ) kept showing RED marks under the variables & I kept trying, but no solution!
& Finally I woke up at 3 am :|1 -

Recruiter writes to me on LinkedIn for a job
Have an interview with the recruiter, everything smooth
Then interview with the HR of the company, everything smooth
Then the HR talks to the CTO, and the CTO is like "mmmmh this guy works as a consultant, I don't like this. Yeet him".
This absolute madman out there not giving a single flying fuck about consultants, head hunter, HR, only pure coding, literally living the dream. -

I think some love might help my career. When I sleep on a bug, all I do is dream about the girl I don't have and when I wake up the bug is fixed

So, I get this super awesome machine, a hardware which was my dream to use for gaming...
2.2Ghz i7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 4GB Radeon Pro 555X, and SSD.
But...
Its a Mac. Nevermind, CSGO is there for Mac.
The IT dept has some weird shit on this laptop that can sense if I'm doing something wrong 🙄
Why could they not spare us?8 -
i had this crazy dream that there's a code ghost that erases the blocks of code i wrote and produces bugs to my programs... damn this is the first time i got really scared.

While I writing PHP I have to think of Haskell all the time, how nice everything would be with Haskell and I dream of the time when I can be with Haskell again. <3

Dream job:
Insulates from this weirdo crap
Prevents time from recycling
Provides adequate income
Promotes health
Places you around respectable people.
Encourages happy feelings in the pride your job creates.
Attaches you to a poweful body of people who can offer protection against the ugly truth of this country.
Allows life to continue normally.
Places you around people worthy of friendship.
Interesting in at least some way.6 -
Dear devRant,
I have come up with my greatest drunken idea, but I don't have the time. So I'm calling on you to make my dream come true. *dramatic music* Hanson Bot! The natural language dating site bot that poses as an underage girl, banking all interactions, setting a meet, and forwarding it to the local police. Chris Hanson... You thought you were safe... I'm gonna automate your job!1 -
The dream:
Three professors, one phd, one post doc, one researcher in a meeting doing code review for you and tell you what a shit piece this is.
Ps. I'm not a phd3 -

How possible is it to have a decentralised internet?
Because currently we have an almost centralised net... Where the major players are Google, Amazon, Alibaba and the likes acting as data holders.
This really bothers me and it's fair to say that the original dream of an internet for the people, by the people, is long gone.
Can we foresee a p2p in place of this monopolitic centralised internet?4 -
I haven't had a lot. But I recently had a dream that our site went down due to this extremely weird, rare bug. So I was at the office tell 4am the next morning. Not that weird.... Except I went into work the next day and wouldn't you know it, the site crashed and I didn't leave until almost midnight trying to fix it.

I had a dream that my code made me fly irl. I traveled at high speeds and noticed up and down. The whole dream theme was that of the sky when the sun makes it and the clouds turn pink. The feeling was like when u get a crush on a girl coder. I might theme a part of my game around it.

I had a dream last night that I saw php error logs from my code floating above people's houses if they were using the site.

Did you ever had a dream where you didn’t know the solution to a problem and you tried to Google it, only to get frustrated and find no results? Did I have a programmers nightmare?2
-
Maybe it is too much of a dream, but I wish to work as rednurevoc tnega as a passive job.
I like the thrill and purpose of such a job. -

Drawing pictures in your mind. This is something I have always struggled with.
Is there a set of exercises a person can do to develop imagery in your mind?
I have had times when I closed my eyes that I experienced what I would call imagery that rivaled or was more detailed than what my eyes fed me. But I only experienced this and did not create what was in the imagery. It has only been once or twice. I know that when I start to dream I can start seeing things with imagery, but I still cannot control this directly. I had one lucid dream where I woke in my dream and was able to construct things for a short period.
What I would like to be able to do is construct shapes and diagrams in my head. Perhaps visualize how an algorithm might function.
Is there a way to learn this?5 -
Before vercel released v0, an ai tool to generate html and css code for your project, I had a dream that I was writing front end code and there’s this mysterious search bar where I can just type in what I wanted and let it generate html code for me. Then the next day I saw the tweet. I was honestly shocked and I checked the tweet time, it was definitely after I woke up, so there was no chance that I saw this thing before my dream.
And the shitty thing was that I was thinking about developing this after I woke up. This sucks -
About a month in and I've found that Github copilot code suggestions are like magic half the time. The other half is useless garbage.
However, writing comments has been a dream. 99% of the time it gives the correct description. If anything its worth using for just that.1 -
My dream is that by the time you're 40 you could drift into the eternal sleep. I haven't yet, but the only thing I know is that you're going to go away. I know how people feel, and I want it all to go away forever.1

My vServer setted Up recently is working.. nearly.. git isn't working.. cant Push to the server.. permission denied, Can not read.. Shit! Any suggestions?

I think I just had a lucid dream... my first.
I thought I snapped my glasses in 2 because I forgot it was on my bed and somehow crushed the nose piece while getting off the bed.
So I'm going crazy looking for my backup and thinking how much it would cost to replace it since i don't have vision insurance this year...
Even thought about using tape to put the 2ends back together....
Just woke up and realized it was a dream. My glasses r fine.
Wonder if this is a warning though... Maybe I'll be more careful because of it...10 -

I have this recurring dream of waking up in a Chinese hospital and the nurses attempting to kill me. Gives me a pill, says they are "vitamins" and then I get paralyzed after taking it. I'm trying to run away from the hospital while but unable to move a muscle.
Anyway, I got banned on Instagram for saying "Gas the jews" on a someone's live.3 -
Had a watchdogs type dream, but my profiler kept bugging up and I ended up in the bunker trying to fix it until I woke up. I no longer play that game

Most of the jobs I dream of are really just jobs I romantisize. Like being a journalist travelling the world with an audio recorder. Or being a barista. I’ve already done the barista thing though, and I’m happy I took the step into software engineering. But maybe one day I’ll go back and start my own little café.

Do you use social networks?
What do you think, how important is social marketing for active users of social networks. For those who may not know, social marketing is the promotion of your page, blog, in various kinds of social media. For example, I am an active user of YouTube. I have a dream, 1 million subscribers. But starting was not easy at all. It is very difficult to break through the routine of thousands of other small channels. The guys from https://videosgrow.com/free-youtube... helped me in this. Now I’m half way to my dream, I have about 500 thousand subscribers, which I am undoubtedly glad.1 -
I had spent all night writing a series of nested loops, my dream was me circling in an old above ground pool like I would as a child. We used to try to make a whirlpool by trying to run along the wall.

I see DIY aircraft videos on YouTube every now and then. All of them are from Africa. People are building poorly designed, dangerous planes that don't fly (surprise, isn't it?). I get that they have very limited resources, but what bugs me is… why not just implement WWI-era designs? They require no exotic materials (essentially wood, sheet metal and canvas), can be built relatively easily, and they are literally battle-tested. They _will_ fly. I get that for those people flight is a dream, but why skip the quickest, cheapest and safest way to achieve that dream?17

Is it just me or do all developers dream of a simple job like being a cashier after a massive deadline with no sleep4
