Getting married tomorrow!!!
Holy shit!!
I'm kind of scared actually. But in a good way 😄
And here I am, in the middle of the night, trying to figure out why my fucking tests don't run 😄56 -
Yesterday. It took me way to long to figure out why my mouse wasn't working....
Thanks, dear colleagues!
😐50 -
More like the most obvious thing I accidentally left OUT of an application without thinking about it.
"application seems advanced/cool/working! Oh by the way how do I log out?"
😐😮😧😅😰😭16 -
Took out both my girlfriend and my stressball for food, the poor ball must've starved on it's way to me!😱
Thanks DevRant Team for the stressball!😄17 -
After joining devrant I spend twice the time sitting on the toilet which results in my right leg falling asleep and me trying to stumble my way out of the bathroom looking like a hideous creature of the night.7
-
I really wish I had known this before. Check this out guys. You can type a unix command and find out what each options mean. Rather than man paging the commands this is a easier way to do it :)5
-
Out at my partner's 21st, going to pop the question as soon as a couple people leave and I can feel my heart trying to make its way out of my ass...
Wish me luck devs!25 -
Recently just hired as a software engineer right out of college. Only three days into the job and I feel like I'm way out of my league. Is this normal?14
-
How to advertise... uhm... not the right way!
The 'beschermd tegen anti-ddos' literally translates to 'protected against anti-ddos'
So then I can DdoS the living shit out of that those services and will be protected against the anti DdoS stuff....?! 🤣9 -
I'm so stressed lately that even when I try to relax I stress out because I keep trying to relax in the most efficient way possible... Fuck7
-
Wtf Microsoft...
Found out the hard way that copying a line of code from Teams chat will sometimes convert the spaces into unrecognized ASCII char.
Spent a few hours yesterday to fix the bad chars.
🤡👍16 -
That moment when your cat turns up, shoves the mouse out of the way and goes to pretend sleep instantly.6

This is for all the developers out there. Keep learning and keep going!
"No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying."1 -
I just found out that there is a method in Java/Android called "Log.wtf()" which stands for...
... What a Terrible Failure!
Don't believe me? See for yourselves! (way to go, guys!)9 -
!rant
Girlfriend decided she wants to learn to code, and I am honestly both excited to teach her, but also nervous; Teaching something is a good way to find out just how much you don’t know.7 -
Make something that not only I but also others find useful, and could outlive me 🙂 there's way too much crap out there currently and I'd like to change that.1
-
I swear down.
There is a developer out there. His one mission to break something in such a way that it only falls over at 1AM.
I hate that guy.4 -
Random thought coming through
Emojis are UTF-8 and there are a TON of them. Wouldn't a password made out of Emojis be way more secure than a normal one?30 -
Sometimes I feel like people here bitch about Windows and Microsoft when half of their issues aren't even Windows/Microsoft's fault. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
There's no way to prove it, but it's basically someone who has their mind made up that Windows is shit, therefore it points out every single thing, especially the trivial shit, that's wrong.
(I'm the same way with iOS/MacOS lol)11 -
Does anyone know if there's a Bob Ross of development?
I feel like I just need to hear someone coding or talking best practices in a chilled out relaxing way to help me through the day.16 -
Me: Yes! I'm finally ready to upload my first Android app to PlayStore, im so excited!!
Google: Make sure to remove all the Log calls from your code.
Me: *Finds out that there's no way Android studio can make it for you*
FUUUUUUUU**10 -
Confuzzled if I should go the low level way and learn more about software architecture and foundation or go the artificial intelligence machine learning way because I want to get out of this infinite loop of only developing apps!4
-
Found this fun folder cleaning out my drive.
Whatever Microsoft......I am deleting it either way.15 -
I couldn't figure out what the giant "C" was doing in my screen. It took me way to long to figure this out.9
-
Had to do an assignment in Haskell and had some bugs all over the way. After some Wodka I did a one liner that worked but I never found out why. 10/10 would do again3
-
Thanks for sending them all the way over here! (I edited out my address) Amazing community and amazing devs. I'll enjoy them!8
-
A colleague once changed the double click timing in the mouse settings to the lowest. This made double click impossible.
Took some time to figure out, and way more to solve without double click :/1 -
Given how much I'm asked to fix my family's computers, I think I'm just going to write a script that shows a "Now fixing..." message and just restarts their system and router.
-
Team leader: so can you develop uwp application?
Me: sure...
Team leader: ok! You're hired to find our bugs , by the way, we give our employees Microsoft Lumia phones.
Me: OMG.im out. the phone will get bsod.
#TrueStory #SecurityCompany5 -
When you're ready to go to bed and you close your eyes... then you instantly figure out the simplest way to remove a nasty bug.... that person is me and now I cant sleep... xD3
-
I updated the UI as I said last time
prettywordcloud.github.io
Found out word cloud essentially is NP hard problem, so can’t do it in an efficient way.
However, now it is more interactive, and gives the illusion it is faster30 -
When walking, Women swing their arms at level height as your balls, watch out.
I've learnt the hard way (no pun)6 -
Lets check out the dev in you.
Problem: Print "Hello World" in C in such a way that you cannot use any semicolon anywhere in the program.
Try this without using internet.
Hint: You only need to know basics of C.52 -
Out of all the bugs, the most annoying are the ones that come out and make me say "WTF?!?!? WHY THE FUCK HAS IT BEEN WORKING FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS??!!?!!??? THERE"S NO WAY IT COULD HAVE!"
When the bug surfaces, you investigate and see that it indeed IS a bug and there's no way it would ever work w/o a fix. But then SOMEHOW it's been working just fine for years....
It's like server elves went on strike and said "no more, it's enough covering that bug - it's time you fix it, lazy-ass idiot!"11 -
Some of y'all are way too intense. Smoke some weed or something man shit. Y'all be acting passionate over nothing. Breathe in, breathe out22

Embarrassing moment:
Needed to deliver apk urgent urgently for push notification testing. I was unable to receive push token. Code is right in every way. Couldn't figured out in 15min. Lead comes to my seat and asks what's issue. And hey suddenly I figured it out. It was my wifi closed.. Bullshit 😬😠4 -
"Condor, your new Samsung Galaxy S8+ doesn't have the latest Google apps"
You know what Google? I don't give a shit about your latest apps. Often times I go out of my way to root the device and remove your mandatory bloatware, that YOU fucking Google enforce OEM's to preinstall. Fortunately BlueStacks doesn't have them preinstalled, which saves me the pain of uninstalling them. Given that, you've got quite the balls to spam me with this shit Google.
By the way, another thing.. this preinstall shit is linked to the EU antitrust rulings, isn't it? And spam is linked to GDPR, and honestly I don't recall ever opting in to this kind of wanketeering mail. In fact, I usually go out of my way to opt out of this kind of corporate wankery. Time for another huge fine perhaps?15 -
Make your cookies banner have equal "Accept All" and "Reject All" buttons, and I'll probably Accept All.
Bury rejection under a fucking "Manage Cookies" button and I will go out of my way to disable/opt out of every fucking one of them.
Also why the fuck would rejecting all take "a few minutes" but accepting be instantaneous?
Fucking hell.18 -
There's so many Javascript frameworks, that the only way to stand out is to create your own framework.
I don't see an end or point to this perpetual nonsense.22 -
Ever met another programmer, and after finding out they use Linux, proceeded to correctly guess which distro they use just by the way they look and talk? :D16
-
There is no other way to put this.
My HR manager just sent out her tax declaration sheet containing all her salary details out to the entire company via email.
The worst part, she makes as much as I do yet fails at the one single job she's supposed to do.3 -
I tried to crochet a pusheen.
It didn’t turn out the way I envisioned. “Maybe googly eyes will help!”
…. I have had mixed comment on whether it makes it better or worse. 😅6 -
Progress has been made
Full control from a webserver!
Very precarious though - motors are held in place by blue tack, but occasionally they break free and hit all the circuitry out of the way
Any thoughts on a better way of controlling it? (In terms of UI/UX)4 -
I swear preparing an app update that's going to be deployed to 500+ people stresses me tf out.
I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way.10 -
When your Tesla’s battery fails, because they cut costs, you are hit with a high-pressure, thick stream of chemical hellfire spanning your entire car’s interior space. It will burn you to a crisp in 30 seconds. Because of all those “aUtOmAtIoNs”, door-opening mechanism will also fail. There is no way you’ll get out.
After 30 seconds, there will be no one left to rescue. After two minutes, there will be nothing left to bury.
There is no way a fire squad could extinguish this. That’s a battery fire. If you remember your chem class, you know lithium burns violently underwater.
You’re gonna die. Elon won’t be responsible, as usual. No one will face any consequences.
But damn, what’s an epic bacon hyperloop tech way to go out, isn't it.15 -
How do you deal with burnout?
I've been working 50-80 hour weeks for the last 10 years, without any real holiday.
I kinda feel I may be irredeemably burned out now.
I know it's not a healthy situation but i'm still looking out for a healthy solution, or at least a way to survive it.23 -
If you're angry at someone not figuring out your code because it was “obvious”, remember:
even before 9/11 happened, emergency lines found out they should say “nine-one-one” instead of “nine-eleven”. Why? Because panicking people were looking for “eleven” button on the keypad. They learned it the hard way.
No one is rational 100% of the time.9 -
I came to notice something funny.
In many languages, programmers will go out of their way to use to newest, most shiny features, even if there isn't any need to.
Only in C, programmers will go out of their way to avoid new features and make their code compatible even with the oldest ANSI standards.5 -
Am I the only one that loses some, if not all, motivation when they can't figure out a way of overcoming a problem that doesn't involve a nauseating hack?3
-
Just spent 3 hours on a single line. Turns out that I had the fucking operators the wrong way around.26
-
Everyone I start feeling like a badass programmer and I can take over the world, there's another programmer that comes out of the woodwork and make me feel like a noob. Why do I even try. Fuck your way of doing things.2
-
I feel so unimportant today. I'm feeling like an

in a loop. (I wrote some code for 2 days and then I found out a way to do it better in 10 mins)2 -
I was hired to do a massive project as a temp. I got part way done and they hired me full time to finish. Then I moved to putting out production fires for unrelated systems until I left.2
-
When I get myself a coffee in the morning, opening up my IDE, looking at the legacy code.. my brain starts yelling: "out of the way coffee, this is a job for whiskey"2
-
How do you usually learn a new language?
My way is to start a project, then figure it out as I go.
I find that books and tutorials are usually better reserved for learning concepts or frameworks.2 -
Boss: Happy Friday!!!!!!
Boss: okay with that out the way get to fuckin work...
Me: John(Boss’s name).....

Interviewer: "Is studying computer science the best way to prepare to be a programmer?"
Bill Gates: "No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating system." -
Looks like Linux is going the way of Python.

And Linus is probably being pushed out.

@dfox what are your plans for devRant? Usually such communities get way out of hand with spam as it grows beyond a certain level? How will you keep devRant safe?15
-
Taken way too long to make but 1.0.3 of devRant Desktop is finally out!! :P
Download: https://github.com/Meadowcottage/...11 -
I once reviewed some code that parsed HTML using regex (red flag #1), and it turns out that it had to be done that way because the company's HTML was so malformed that no actual parser would accept it without erroring1
-
Felt like a badass when I figured out a way to get my massive wallpaper collection onto my company provided laptop which was completely and I mean COMPLETELY locked down.
I couldn't bear the thought of using the default Windows wallpapers 😂3 -
First check if anybody else has done it.
Second check if theres a convoluted way to chain existing projects to do it.
Third buy some whisky and down half of it.
Fourth plan it out
Fifth create directory and open vim1 -
Can I just point out how awesome SideFX houdini is!?
It allows you to create (procedurally generate) 3D models using a method that is half coding and half 3D modeling. Kind of the way I'd want blender to work, but 10 times better.6 -
I was amazed by an elderly man on the subway yesterday, he pulled out his tabled and stated reading a book on it. Thinking of that I know way too much younger people who can't even use a computer properly..1
-
Did you know chrome on Android has a dark theme????
**gasps**
Why didn't anybody tell me that? I missed out for so long!... Actually how long has this even been out?
Either way, good discovery!19 -
I reached the bottom of the barrel baby-talking to a robot 😂
The localization demo worked out of the box, in a very disturbingly suspicious way.

Weather Report: Thunderstorms and heavy downpour
Stuck at office wondering whether I really hate tab more than spaces that it wore out OR is it that I use it way too much.
PS: Currently fixing the tab button10 -
I've traveled all the way from Chile to Ecuador to ask requirements for an already won project, just to find out it was already taken by a local company.

I'm starting to think, that these programming tests that companies give out, are just a way for me to their work... especially when they don't reply.2

Half fact: Code reviews help to maintain clean codebases.
Full fact: Code reviews are a way to find out who secretly wants you fired.4 -
I'd post a pic of my setup but in reality my workspace is any space I can perch my laptop and be out the way of customers and colleagues.

Working on my website. Ranting on positioning my background which uses CSS perspective and translateZ to move slowly when someone scrolls.
Can't figure out a way to make it not overflow the whole document for almost 3 days.
Out of frustration changed the position to fixed.
And the problem was gone :( :D :(
I have no idea if I should cry or laugh loudly4 -
The WiFi at my office requires username and password to sign-in and logs out after every few hours. Then I have to tap on "sign in" and submit the username and password again.
Is there any fucking way I could automate this.......?12 -
Less stress.. No panic.. And yea.. Beer. Drink beer if you're really stressed... Helps me out everytime..
By the way I am drinking beer as I write this..10 -
Fun way to confuse the non-tech people in my dorm... Making magnets out of some stuff I’ve fixed 📱2

I was trying to crack my own wifi using airmon-ng but found out applying brute force will take up to 237 years!(11 lower case character password )
Is there any other way to crack my WPA2 (psk) more efficiency?9 -
colleague of mine typed "ButBucket.com" instead and now we're trying to figure out if BitBucket owns the "ButtBucket.com" domain cuz it's $4K a year and that price sounds a little high
Either way I want the domain name2 -
Shout-out to the sites that make cookie popups the least annoying they can by actually providing options in the quickest way.
Those that hide them while having "allow all" take up 50% of the modal? Suck my fucking nuts.6 -
Never gave much consideration to new year's resolutions, but here we go:
- Make my life less shitty
- Find a way out of my depression
- Get back to my old rythm
- Be in control of my own mind and my body again5 -
As much as I love to complain about my job, I have to say I have such a huge amount of respect for my peers who go out of their way to help me and other engineers out. I feel like they deserve so much more praise because when they help others out, everyone succeeds.1

If someone asked you to fill a partition with garbage data, what's the fastest way you'd use?
My fav is a piped 'yes' command. I've seen it max SSD's out.10 -
Microsoft released PowerShell for Linux. Why? They released IE for OS X way back and we all know how that turned out....10

A creative way to get yourself locked out from your server: having your new password manager hit an old entry port for a favicon - which gets you banned, took me a second to understand why I can't suddenly access things anymore lol3
-
I finished a 30-minute lecture today with the conclusion "so it turns out that throwing way more data and resources at this Machine Learning problem gives much better results."
Who could have possibly predicted that?!2 -
Developer: we are going o have to do it this way because it's the only way I can get it to work.
Other developer: what are you on about that's a easy thing to do you should not be doing it that way you idiot are you thick or something! do it this way the correct blah blah way, "let me show you moron (says out loud to everyone in the office) to show how superior and awesome they are"......
Two hours later, "yes we will have to do it your way in the end, my way doesn't work"
I fucking told you that 2 hours ago. Some people just don't believe lol #timewasted1 -

Sometimes, I liked to play dumb and pretend I don't know what I'm doing around IT.
That way I can come out alive with a little sanity1 -
Have you ever written an awesome tool or library at work and then you want to find a way to sneak it out of the company to use it on your own projects?1
-
To be fair I'm actually grateful for Windows 10! If it had never frustrated me the way it did I wouldn't have seriously tried out any linux distro as a daily driver 😂1
-
Finally figured out that 500.30 error.
You won't believe it, but y'all probably will... But I solved my problem by fixing literally one line of code.
This of course pissed me off because this problem persisted for an entire week, even my supervisor could not figure it out.
But I learned so much in failing to find it and making wrong assumptions along the way.
Solving a problem is sometimes just half the battle, the journey along the way counts for something.
My supervisor was super impressed too, so that made me even more happy.
Anyways onto the next problem. 🤪6 -

Anyone draw out the logic of a process by hand before coding much?
I've been doing that more and more, and it's handy but ... it's also kinda tedious making them on paper or even just in the VS Code extensions I've tried.
I'd really like a way to bust out quick flow charts in VSCode and there's a Draw.io add on and it's ok but lotta fidgeting with flow chats and dragging stuff.
It doesn't have to be pretty and it doesn't have to be super feature rich.... just want to quick bust out a series of steps flow chart style or ... hell any way fast and visual like.
Anyone use anything they really like?11 -
Well, that's one way of getting rid of bugs and creating other issues, since it never works out to have just random people fix never to be touched again systems9

Human-robot studies suck.
Like, why do I even have to compare dumbass humans to computers? Or why should I even make my robot human friendly? Why can't humans be robot friendly? My vocabulary is way to small to express my feelings when being forced to use .Net 4.0. Just spent like 2 hours searching why my Api requests failed.
Turns out it used TLS 1.0 which got rejected by the server. Then I spent another 2 hours finding out how to make it use TLS 1.2. Surprisingly it does work now (although it came out before TSL 1.2 specification). But yeah still a fucking pile of shit.1 -
A few days ago our server was compromised due to an outdated Jenkins version. The malicious user installed a crypto miner on the server... The same day that it was found I told management that I'm interested in helping out with the server. Since then, nothing happened... No updates, no security measures, no nothing (except for the removed crypto miner and updated Jenkins software)
Oh well only a matter of time before another hack...
Question to some (who work way way way longer than me) med - seniors, should I make a big deal out of this? And keep pressure on it. Or should I just leave it be and wait for the next comprised server? I know devrant is not a Q&A service, but some dev to dev advice is much appreciated.

So after a few struggles on my current uni assignment I’ve come to the realisation I need to change the way I write code, or at least the way I think about the code before I start.
I have a tendency to rush into coding something before I’ve planned it out properly, and over the last couple of days stupid mistakes on my part caused hours of stressing.
Are there any good methods for sitting down and planning stuff like this out, or is it just a case of getting some paper and a pen and writing out the logic etc in whatever way makes sense to you (me)?7 -

My last job I worked with one other dev, she always thought her code was PERFECT and the way she did things PERFECT, she enjoyed pointing out flaws in my code or web sites in our big marketing meeting with out executives. Yeah won't miss her one bit

Think I finally figured out a clean way to get the data I need out of the system. The data format has it's origins in what was practical for computers in the 1960s. TGIF - I'll enjoy believing I've solved it all the way until monday.

I am all burned out on everything having to do with websites. I need a new career path. I’ve never been a stellar programmer. I have no idea what to switch to that I could be good at and that comes with a paycheck and benefits to provide for a family of six. Feeling painted into a corner with no way out.4

Just published my first internal app, which is nice
We’ve also now started using GitLab, so I need to work out an easy way for use to transfer all of the reports from SourceSafe.
There’s only about 500+ of them, should be fun2 -

Okay so, I started my actual classes today and interacted with seniors in University Bus, turns out they figured out a way to pass the exams without even studying, they'll just find some teacher and enable autosave passwords on Browsers and copy their password to the Uni ERP system. I'm surprised lol.1 -

In the project I'm working on with others, really complex and confusingly programmed, there's a method called "check[...]IsSet". It gives back a string. They went out of their way to write a Javadoc for it and what does it say?

A lot of us get imposter syndrome in this industry. I still get it on a regular basis.
You can't wait until things are perfect. You have to launch imperfectly, but with confidence that you'll get where you need to be. But then imposter syndrome sets in. Self doubt tells us we don't belong.
I found this quote in my email pile this morning:
"Isn't doing your best all you can do? Dropping the narrative of the impostor isn't arrogant, it's merely a useful way to get your work done without giving into Resistance. Time spent fretting about our status as impostors is time away from dancing with our fear, from leading and from doing work that matters." - Seth Godin -
