I don't understand people who watch football at all... Yesterday at around 4pm France time, France was playing against Denmark I think, so my boss had the brilliant idea of making some kind of party so everyone in the company would watch that. He brought beer, make up, food and so on.
Guess what, pretty much all my coworkers stopped working on their programming projects and went to watch it, I was the only one who stayed in my office and worked on my project, yeah, i'd rather finish my PHP project than watch a bunch of brainlets running after a ball.
Boss was nice enough to bring me a drink though lol14 -
I think we're going two sides:
For one, more and more technology is being developed/engineered which is even more and more and more intrusive as for personal privacy, I'm genuinely worried how this'll go as privacy isn't just a about not exposing certain things like passwords/bank account details and so on, it's also about being an individual who has their own thoughts, opinions and so on. If we keep taking that away more and more often, society will change and go towards the Orwell scenario (we're on our way there right now). We can change this as software/design/server engineers but that's up to us and I sadly don't see that happening quickly, also due to the 'nothing to hide' bullshit.
Second one is that were going more and more towards open source.
This is a good thing as this:
- gives freedom to devs around the world to improve software and/or modify it to suit their needs.
- gives people the opportunity to look through the source code of softwares in order to verify it as for backdoors and find security vulnerabilities which otherwise can remain hidden for the general public while spying agencies have way more resources to go vulnerability hunting.
For the people who think this isn't a good idea (even more open source), without it we'd be completely fucked as for moving forward/security/privacy. (I can give examples if wanted).3 -
there's this thing I've noticed...
º the more interesting DEV task I'm working on, the more I forget to eat (sometimes at all @9-5)
º the more boring/repelling DEV task I'm working on, the more snack breaks I take
Am I alone here?
Does that mean exciting DEV (only?) work is more likely to keep you fit and boring tasks are dragging you to obesity?2 -

Life cycle of code
1- See what sound code I have written! It's beautiful.
2 - Hey we missed something last time, just add this bit of tweak.
3 - We need to add some flags for some exception cases
4 - Hey there is a new requirement. Just add some more paths and more flags
5 - More flags!
6 - This shit runs now more on flags than on the design!
7 - Flagception!3 -
I have a rule made by myself. I call it "550 line".
If a class have more than 500 or a method more than 50 line, something is wrong.

Don't waste your time - they said.
Use Spring - the good ol' framework - they said
It's not slow - they said
me: ignores them, builds a custom jetty-based webserver with the same functionality Spring+tomcat can offer (mappings, routings, etc).
My app: boots up completely in <300ms, while Spring tutorials say a hello-world app takes 3+ seconds to spin-up http://websystique.com/spring-boot/...
me: already set for deployment in lambda. I bet I can tune it up even further with lazy-loading if I really have to...
Moral of the story: sometimes bare-bones solution is a better choice: more performant, more extendable, more testable, more lightweight.
That, dear folks, is the classic LESS IS MORE :)12 -
The good part is with each update Android studio gets more and more powerful with more and more features.
The sad part work each update Android studio gets heavier and even the basic feature is a pain in the ass to work with

The posts about love coding interviews and low paid freelancing work just reminds me how little anyone know about process of using code to solve real problems.
If someone wanted to give me a JavaScript test then I'd point them at Fivver where there are tonnes of JS devs available for minimum wage.
No one is paying me for my ability to write code. They are paying me to solves problems that businesses have that are likely to involve software.2 -
now I’m starting to understand why unit testing is helpful as I’m making more and more features to the existing system I’m beginning to realize that the more shit I add the more chances I have of the existing components to fucking break for no reason this is very annoying and time-consuming11

From the Chromium mailing list:
TL;DR - 32 bit is no more (?)
Hi, chromium devs,
TL:DR;
I will remove following 4 builders next week.
Linux Builder (dbg)(32)
Linux Tests (dbg)(1)(32)
linux_chromium_compile_dbg_32_ng
linux_chromium_dbg_32_ng
More explanation:
For now, chromium does not support 32 bit Linux
https://support.google.com/chrome/...
and all 32 bit x86 devices for chromeos is EOL too.
https://chromium.org/chromium-os/...
Considering that, I was not able to find any reason we have builders for not supported platform now.
If you have any comments about this builder removal, please let me know.
I will start removing process of the builders next week if there is no concern from you.
Note: This removal does not include 32 bit android/windows/libfuzzer or other than chromium builders.
Thanks,
Takuto

New year is the only +1 I do not give a fuck about. All it means is I am one year closer to death, so I will smoke one more cigarette after the last, one more cup of coffee with far too much sugar, and I will keep coding one more line after the other, and frankly it is just to distract me from the fact that there is always another +1, one more person to hate, one more word spoken, all so I can get to through one more year. So fuck the new year because there will always be another. But I won't always get a +1 on a rant.5

I was struggling to make advancements in my task because I was so oriented by the "more code means more work done"... I wasn't producing at all. Now that I grabbed a notebook and a pen and started to think things through, things are finally rolling. Sometimes it's 90% thinking and 10% coding. In addition to that, I can't even write spagetti code after getting a solid concept written in pen. I just hate that I spend so much time thinking until something good comes up. But hey now it's rollinnnnnn.undefined pen productivity less is more notebook efficient implementations mean more puzzles work smart not hard4

Forgot to put a negative sign in front of my negative bound.
Took me an additional hour and a half to solve for all the edge cases.

Only one goal : earn more money.
- Not to work for friendship, equity, kindness, craziness, etc. Code more for sole purpose to earn more
- Accept more projects whether I can develop or not to earn more
- Learn to manage and work with freelancers and agencies to earn more
- Work for anyone and any type of project suitable for my knowledge as long as the offer is good to earn more
Etc. You got the gist.

Made a comparison of a rather large codebase that I did for a client before in flask to perl dancer2 and ror. Obviously the rails codebase is larger. The flask version remains as minimal as it once did, even considering blueprints and the dancer version is small but really expandable and powerfull. It has some great things, it was inspired by sinatra so it has that magical approach to doing things but the code is solid and easy to understand imho. They really make it towards perl code is not the unreadable codebase as it once was and the syntax just clicks. Even for its api capabilities it works amazing with the front end (Vue.js) and I can honestly say that I really enjoy it.

Now we have 18 of them. It's already day 3 and still noone has a clue why our env provision scripts are failing.
Well... At least I'm getting paid for sitting and waiting for them to finish this circus 😀1 -
Quality != more work + less talk
Quality = more talk resulting in less work.
That makes no sense mathematically.
“Let’s talk more about shit before we create shit”.
That’s a little better.
“Let’s talk more so we don’t create shit”.
Getting closer.
“Let’s talk more about what is needed till we all know what is best before we program a damn machine?”
...This is going nowhere fast.
Okay fuck it. Let’s just code some stuff. It’s more enjoyable.7 -

The conversations that come across my DevOps desk on a monthly basis.... These have come into my care via Slack, Email, Jira Tickets, PagerDuty alerts, text messages, GitHub PR Reviews, and phone calls. I spend most of my day just trying to log the work I'm being asked to do.
From Random People:
* Employee <A> and Contractor <B> are starting today. Please provision all 19 of their required accounts.
* Oh, they actually started yesterday, please hurry on this request.
From Engineers:
* The database is failing. Why?
* The read-only replica isn't accepting writes. Can you fix this?
* We have this new project we're starting and we need you to set up continuous integration, deployment, write our unit tests, define an integration test strategy, tell us how to mock every call to everything. We'll need several thousand dollars in AWS resources that we've barely defined. Can you define what AWS resources we need?
* We didn't like your definition of AWS resources, so we came up with our own. We're also going to need you to rearchitect the networking to support our single typescript API.
* The VPN is down and nobody can do any work because you locked us all out of connecting directly over SSH from home. Please unblock my home IP.
* Oh, looks like my VPN password expired. How do I reset my VPN password?
* My GitHub account doesn't have access to this repo. Please make my PR for me.
* Can you tell me how to run this app's test suite?
* CI system failed a build. Why?
* App doesn't send logs to the logging platform. Please tell me why.
* How do I add logging statements to my app?
* Why would I need a logging library, can't you just understand why my app doesn't need to waste my time with logs?
From Various 3rd party vendors:
* <X> application changed their license terms. How much do you really want to pay us now?
From Management:
* <X> left the company, and he was working on these tasks that seem closely related to your work. Here are the 3 GitHub Repos you now own.
* Why is our AWS bill so high? I need you to lower our bill by tomorrow. Preferably by 10k-20k monthly. Thanks.
* Please send this month's plan for DevOps work.
* Please don't do anything on your plan.
* Here's your actual new plan for the month.
* Please also do these 10 interruptions-which-became-epic-projects
From AWS:
* Dear AWS Admin, 17 instances need to be rebooted. Please do so by tomorrow.
* Dear AWS Admin, 3 user accounts saw suspicious activity. Please confirm these were actually you.
* Dear AWS Admin, you need to relaunch every one of your instances into a new VPC within the next year.
* Dear AWS Admin, Your app was suspiciously accessing XYZ, which is a violation of our terms of service. You have 24 hours to address this before we delete your AWS account.
Finally, From Management:
* Please provide management with updates, nobody knows what you do.
From me:
Please pay me more. Please give me a team to assist so I'm not a team of one. Also, my wife is asking me to look for a new job, and she's not wrong. Just saying.3 -

Our Entreprise CMS at work (obviously):
- inconsistent UI : check (misplaced buttons, some pages are more developed than others)
- slow: check (average 6 seconds of waiting, with cache)
- loading screen as page transitions covering the whole page, making it impossible to click somewhere else if mistaken, adding +3 seconds to loading : check
- time-based session, inlined in HTML and wildly disconnects you, making you lose all changes : check
- sometimes objects are inaccessible and can't do anything about it : check
- "delete" button next to "edit", delete is bigger and I have already clicked the delete button by accident : check
- can't have local development environment, need to work with integrated editor which has no helping features: check
- first TTFB: adds +2-6 seconds to loading time
TL;DR : a pleasant, developer-friendly, frustration- and rantless CMS to work with, reliable and fast. -

Look, I get that you want your front to be really, really, reallyyyy fancy! But when that fanciness comes at a price, more specifically speed! Then we're going to have a problem. Look... Not everyone has super fast internet, and when your website thinks it's better to load the entire website and not the sign in first, then we're going to have issues.
No it doesn't work that way. I don't want to be mounted by ads, Let me IN quickly and quietly, and we won't have any issues.

My Windows Computer is crapping out more and more with each "update".
Currently, it often hangs when shutting down or restarting. Completely out of the blue!
Like, I remember it updated itself a few days ago and now I have random problems, crashes and a few more bloat-/spyware apps that I didnt order.
Also, windows added a few more cryptic services to my OS that now phone home to all countries all around the world.
This is a nightmare!3 -

Hello family,
what do you think about publishing unfinished apps? I dont mean beta versions, but apps where you could implement more features bit by bit. So the main app is fully functional, but you could implement more and more..
So what's your opinion?

I don’t know if I just want to harm myself or what… like it’s as if I really enjoyed being burned out so I’m trying to recreate that feeling.
So, the thing is I’m employed as a de facto principal security engineer, basically doing the work of 5-6 people and more, since I haven’t been able to completely shed all my responsibilities from my previous roles as cloud engineer and software developer. On top of that I’m studying my CS Master’s as if I was a full-time student. That’s a lot on my plate. No free time to speak of, and even that’s filled with side projects and, if I can spare the time once in a while, other hobbies.
Now I saw that the security research group in my university is recruiting research assistants to a quantum-resistant cryptography research project - and I am soooo tempted to apply. The topic and what the research project practically aims for, and the potential learning outcomes that I can see from the job description, excite me beyond comprehension!
Am I going to drive myself to burn-out and my marriage to an irreparable state if I take that side job on top of this all? Will I be reasonable and think about that ahead of time, before applying, or will I dive in and just find out?4 -

At least I cannot do it while using filters. My "front page" uses some filters and I can only see 10 posts. When I scroll down hoping to load more posts I attempt to "drag den to load more" but the app doesn't load more posts. I just see a spinner that vanished.
Bug or feature?2
