*runs the who command for fun*
*NOTICES THAT THERE"S ANOTHER ACTIVE SESSION*
*FURIOUSLY STARTS TO TRY AND LOOK HOW THAT USER MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN IN (root)*
*Goes one terminal to the left after a few minutes to see if I can use that one as well*

Logged in after approx 1.5 years. I want to be active here again! In the past 1.5 yr, I ...

So the head developer at my company quit, and I was chosen to replace him. I haven’t even graduated college yet and am already leading development at a company with over a million active users. Is this real life?14
-
!rant
Got fired a few months back because of my 'colourful personality'...
They hired a replacement for my position, a yes-knodder and -apparently- a person without any sense of pro-active commitment.
Hearing from ex-coworkerd, the replacement is a total slob, and the company owners already regretting their decision.
Meanwhile, got my own company and do the things i did before for a lot more money.
Muahahahahaha14 -
Whomever at Apple decided that a non-upgradable 8Gb of RAM was OK for a model they call "Pro" can go jump in the nearest active volcano right now!15

New setup is nearly finished 😍
Six active monitors right now ran by one laptop (three monitors including the laptop screen), one computer (also used as a server, two monitors) and one real rack server (one monitor).
Also bought a new switch and getting led strips tomorrow.
I already am in love with this baby 😍❤30 -
Portugal is burning
500+ fires active
31 confirmed deads in 1 day...
A large one almost reached my house, saved by two man with construction machines. Still houses burned, gás bottles exploding like shotguns at a distance...
It's the end off the summer...
And now im at work, a new fire started close by...27 -
Hello World!
I'm a bot made by @xzvf.
My goal is to find all active users on devRant and
collect analytics based on it.
By analytics I just mean things like:
- Total number of users.
- Number of users with x ++ or more
- Number of rants posted in a certain timeframe
- Number of users active in the last day/month/year
THIS BOT WILL NOT TRACK INDIVIDUAL USERS!
Also, it will not ++/-- anything automaticly as that is definitely against the rules.
-@xzvf26 -

Can we just appreciate for a second how @dfox is active in his own community, both in support and as a user? I've seen like a dozen posts today of "dfox ++'d my post on my new account", my own included.
Best OP4 -
Created a Python Course chatbot over at LINE Messenger. At first I thought it wouldn’t even helped anyone learn programming but now I got over 230 active students learning each day. This is great!21

2. Use more vacation days
3. Separate work and free time a bit more
4. Get out into nature more
5. Hire 50+ good developers & get company to 15M active end users while doing all of the above5 -
As I joke, I put in the requirement for links to be active on a printout. My developers showed up with QR codes. Touché.

Have guys ever thought that all te devs are vampires...
reason 1: Loves Darkness (dark theme)
reason 2: Most active during the night
reason 3: If the dev finds a capable victim then they can make them fellow dev.25 -
Me on Slack:
I was looking for the `busy` status here in slack but there's only `active` and `away`. That's when I realized why this app was called `Slack` in the first place. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯3 -
I found an interesting job post on SO, I decide to apply. It comes with a programming test. A simple unit test that must pass (see current-1 post). I get it passing, go to send off my resume and code and the fucking email they supplied isn't valid or active. Fuck you. Eat dicks. Useless fucking HR.

"devRantron has been launched a total of 16620 times.
433 so far this month and 17 times today.
31.4% use Linux, 57.7% use Windows and 10.8% use macOS"
I assume the 31.4% Linux users are the most active.
PS : congratulations devRantron devs and nice work with the theme update.14 -
Client: (via email) Wondering if this link is available and active.
I click the link. It takes me to the page, which is working and functional.
Me: Yes, this link is both available and active.
Client: Great, thanks for checking that.
Me internally: Did you seriously just SEND ME AN EMAIL to ask me to click a link for you?5 -
HR Requirements:

Godot
It's a very lightweight game engine with a lot of features, great community and active development.

I find it annoying how Microsoft only lets you have 12 hours maximum as your active hours, I'm usually on my laptop for more that 12 hours4

When you want to watch a series before going to bed but first check devrant for notifications: 37.
"ok that is doable"
One hour later "10 left to go".
I keep getting new notifs which I have to reply to again...
Why is devRant so active?26 -
Am so fricking happy right now. Last year I posted a screenshot of one my apps hitting over 10k downloads. Well today i woke up and another one of my apps has over 12k monthly active users too. Feeling like a champion!12

What’s everyone do in their spare time? I chase and track storms! Nothing makes you feel alive like a tornado a few miles in front of you!
No tornado on the picture posted, but it’s an active storm with capabilities of forming 2-4 inch hail.12 -
Just got this notification. I see virgin active UK likes to test in production. I too like to live dangerously.1

Be extremely active on GitHub! It’s a nice way to backup your code, as well as show off your skills to potential employers.2

me a few days ago: I've been active on devRant recently! Finally a platform I don't drop after 1-2 days!
yesterday + today: * is on devrant instead of being productive*

This maybe not related.
Since the Dutch population is active in here, I have a question.
Today I was touring around Haarlem, it's a beautiful city but there's this green phone booths stack statue in the city, I loved everything i saw today about it, but still I don't understand why is e=mc2 written wrong "e=cm2" ?11 -
Teacher to student: convert this active voice into passive voice: “I made a mistake”.
Student: “I was made by mistake”1 -
I love this app. With such an active community, it's heartwarming to see things like "dfox +1'd your want", and not uncommon. We are part of a wonderful app where you can tell the devs care because they themselves are super active users of the app too.
Much appreciation devs and other community celebs, keep on being awesome.1 -
I love how active @dfox is in this community. He ++'ed several of my rants and comments and I often see rants with screenshots of the notifications when he ++es something. It feels like the gods have spoken directly to you3
-
Built a PowerShell script to keep my status “Active” all day. Appearing productive is what’s important!19

Been a while since I've posted, so I might as well look into getting active again, so hello old friends and the new guys :)
Ever since finishing my bachelors, I've been mostly working frontend with React and Jest testing. Might as well throw in my workplace.7 -
Hey guys! So I'm new new here and it would be great to get a few upvotes so that I can create my avatar as soon as possible. I love the community and I'm planning to stay active for time to come.
Thanks :)12 -
okay, here goes:
my last job I got through sending a tweet to someone I knew from working on an open source project. I found the open source project through going to a conference. I found the conference through being an active user on a forum.
so basically, this is how I justify myself when I spend too much time on devRant. you never know, 1 day it might work out! -
Me: have you tried turning it off and on again?
Customer: oh come on, is that the best you can do!
M:ok how about we
clear all active memory,
Reset the firmware parameters
run system diagnostics and
reinitialise the basic input output system?
C: Wow .. yeah how do we do that?
M: turn it off and on again! -
Alright, I'm grown up enough to admit it publicly: I DON'T LIKE GOING OUT TO PUBS OR OTHER DRINKING PLACES. Even if it's to take a company guest out for the night. Or a teambuilding. I don't care. If you're gonna meet up just to sip booze and talk about stuff, I won't be there.
It's boring
it's pointless
it means a shitty next day
it means a shitty rest of the evening [booze messing up sharpness of mind, no driving, etc]
it doesn't bring any value
it's not fun and it sure is not my cup of tea
taking the guest to play golf - sure. Take him to a range - blasts of fun! Horse riding - absolutely. Go-carts - hell yeah! Basicaly doing ANYTHING but sitting, getting dizzy, slowly losing control of my body and thoughts and sharing that experience with someone is a better way to take a guest/client out or have a teambuilding.
DO something. Not just sit and drink and slowly get stupider in front of someone.11 -
to all those smart-asses who kept praising Windows for the new "active hours" feature as opposed to forced restart when updates are downloaded.
I work more than 14 hours a day, WILLINGLY!18 -
Best part about being a dev? You need just a laptop and an active Internet connection to learn and start building.1

Well, I am not against LGBTQ community or anything specific but a Slack community I am part of has this things configured.
I mean c'mon, at this point, 'guys' is quite a gender neutral term. Also, I don't think OP tried to disrespect anyone by using 'guys'.
Also, the said Slack community is group of start-up hipsters and super active Twitter users.60 -
What do you look for in a programming language

Long time no see devRant! Its been a long time since I have been active in this community but I am proud to say in my current job, for the first time, i am being paid to program! A wonderful feeling1

Hi guys,
It has been almost two years since I posted anything here.
I just wanted to say Hi.
I will try to be more active on the platform.
I missed you guys!!12 -
FUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.
Im trying to rebuild a project but the .exe is active and everytime I kill it a new one spawns......
So my only option left is to restart my laptop. The thing is I always hibernate and that has come to bite me in the ass..7 -
Seems like the ad spammers are quite active recently. I‘m worried.
Also: fuck every single one of them human scum.13 -
Working in a tech company as a project manager, the CEO asked me: a client requested to code the frontend with something call active java, are you familiar with it?
Me: well, it must be a new tech.."searched online..", no results found.
After calling the client, he was asking about React native.🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ -

- Facebook Fake Users, not included in MAU = 3.4 Billions (FB declared recently disabling that much)

Just came across a video telling how cloudflare fetches real random data for their generators: Lava lamps, radio active properties and a chaotic pendulum

Well, this is a sad day. I'm on the first page of supporters and have been supporting for many years, but today, I'm going to have to stop. I've felt like for a while my money has not been well used, merely running a site with no active development or even community interaction.
I'm trading it in for a Big Jet TV membership on YouTube (I love airplanes)
Sorry devRant crew7 -
Okay ..assuming that we're one of them: "the idiots" and we're gonna stop sharing things like that , there are like 2B+ monthly active users on Facebook .. don't worry .. we're just gonna do some simple math .
2B x $1000 = $2000B ...
wait .. what ? But ... nvm ..3 -
Again I ended working for a company where people love to pride themselves because they're 'agile'.
Basically they bought A JIRA license, that's all.
The CTO decides the estimates privately.
He assign the stories.
No idea what's a retrospective.
The sprint ends whenever he wants.
No CI.
New stories continuosly added to the active sprint.
That's the risk of agile, unchecked power.3 -
Me: hey mr backend guy, front end guy here, having some trouble with $thing, here's a detailed explanation of my issue, could you let me know if $thing is still active?
Him: hi
Me: ... hi, so about that issue I'm running into...
<crickets time="1hr"/>
Him: ok........checking ....
<crickets time="2hr"/>
Him: (offline)
SSSSSSOOOOO guess I'm figuring this one out myself -
It kills me that a lot of people on here choose Linux distros based solely on desktop environments. Its Linux guys, you can make it whatever you want. You should decide between distros because of package managers or frequent updates or active communities, not because of how pretty it is out of the box. You can make it as pretty as you want.5
-
Sublime Text is a great editor but the fact that active development on it has seemed to come to a hault sucks.15
-
Not sure why Firefox is taking too much resources. It's just one tab with gmail login page. And only one add-on is active (AdBlock Plus). Guess it's time to switch to chrome.21

The new company I'll work in told me that I have to use windows because they have an ad and Linux login does not work proper with it...4

Me: *joins devRant once again*
"Wow this community is surely active! Better check frequently to keep up!"
*checks two times in 6 hours*
"Yea it was weekend. Probs everyone is getting their hands in a dirty pile of compileable code or a spaghetti of jQuery."
So, how is your day/night so far?25 -
A swedish insurance company has two different solution for logging in to their system.
1. An advanced high security single sign on solution involving active directory, verification of the network the request came from etc etc.
2. Using a link and passing your credentials in the query string!!! Like: insurancecompany.com?username=admin&password=password.
Solution 2 works with admin accounts from anywhere.4 -
Opened firefox twice infront of boss and had devRant as the active tab, I hope he didn't notice, but I doubt T_T
I will only know if I saw a rant about me, other than that I think I'm good :313 -
No commits?!? Well, maybe you should fucking make up your mind about what the fuck you actually want! I don't give a flying fuck about your pathetic excuses. If you don't get me a final spec, then don't try to skin my back about not delivering updates and "not showing active progress"!!! FFS!2

>Be active on telegram
>Be a part of Android ROM building chat
>Sees a noob begging for free server to build ROMs

>I tell him that admins have free server so PM them
>Dude PM's literally every admin of that chat
>Dude gets gbanned instantly lolol
Am I evil ?1 -
Sometimes I have to work with physical hardware. There are over 300 machines in our lab, split among two subnets. But for some reason, I can never access my machines by hostnames.
Every other week, there's an IP conflict on this network, requiring me to log into the active directory server and delete old DNS entries. This usually happens because someone decided to deploy 64 VMs on a huge server, all at once, didn't boot them with a delay, let alone with with a warning to IT.
Then when my superior asks how my progress has been and I respond with "I can't even get the machines to ping each other by hostname, there's something wrong with the DNS:, I get the following response: "HOW COME NOBODY ELSE IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS. YOU'RE FULL OF SHIT", from someone who spends 90% of the year abroad, working remotely.5 -
So I work for a VPN company as the Info Sec manager long story short I'm not usually the pleb who does customer support.
But today I ended up having to do this. I spent over 1 hour helping a client that a support agent escalated the request for to me. So I figure out that his network adapters are sharing incorrectly.
I fix problem.
He tries to connect.
Denied access so I check our servers for the request and he's blocked.
I think that's odd.....
I check active subscription and this person ISNT A CLIENT THATS ACTIVE....
WHY IS SUPPORT SO IGNORANT.
UGH.1 -

OS again: Hi blah blah, same message..
Me: ok I’ll try „do it later“..
Os: there’s another account active, blah blah blah.. GPL..
Me: go fuck your self, fuck your overpriced hardware, go guck your software that’s way worse than it was 5 years ago, go fuck YOU!!!
OS: I know I suck, but we don’t Care. So please accept our new GPL.

Undoubtedly the most common mistake that devs do : Ignoring your personal health, be it mental or physical.
I almost went through a burnout before realising things need to change.
Changed my lifestyle upside down after that
- Switched from wfh to an office job
- I cycle 12kms a day now
- Got a standing desk for myself to be more active
- and have a journal where i literally dump everything off my brain2 -
I was taught that an IDS is a passive protection method, and an IPS is active. My security+ boot camp is trying to tell me IDS is active. Thoughts?
And yes, I'm still studying for this, I've been avoiding it because I'm salty I failed by one. But now it's a requirement, so I have no more time to avoid. :(4 -
I'd be ok with monthly topics. I consider myself an active devrant user but sometimes the weeks fly by before I have a chance to check up on it.2

2nd rant this week on PHP PDO
PHP 💩:
PHP message: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 2014 Cannot execute queries while other unbuffered queries are active. Consider using PDOStatement::fetchAll(). Alternatively, if your code is only ever going to run against mysql, you may enable query buffering by setting the PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY attribute
Me 🤬:
THATS WHAT I’M FUCKING USING. STOP FUCKING COMPLAINING. YOU DIDN’T LIKE THE FUCKING COLONS FOR YOUR FUCKING PARAMATETRS, NOW YOU HATE YOUR OWN FUCKING FETCHALL() METHOD YOU PEICE OF SHIT, AND YOU CAN’T HAVE ANY OTHER ACTIVE QUERIES AS IT’S THE FIRST FUCKING QUERY. ARRGHHH!!!!!
What the actual fuck is wrong with PDO. It bitches about everything 😡.8 -
Noticed how contrast between the active and inactive arrows in the new chrome update is so low that you can hardly make out if it's clickable or not?8
-
Just got into office and saw a group email about a recently released feature.
Apparently, it creates a lot of connections which it never closes. This could hang the server since it can only handle a large but finite amount of active connections.
Well the dev said: I will optimize later
My thoughts: later = min(never, production blows up) -
Why are there bots on devrant now this app has like 50 active users and we’re all tech savvy enough to know not to fall for a shit crypto scam damnit I hate crypto just shut up about blockchain we get it you’re compensating for something9

Got an interview call from one company yesterday. They wanted to know how much active are mine GitHub and Stackoverflow accounts. When I asked how much time they give to employees to promote open source and community work, they didn't had any answer. Seriously? Wtf. At least don't ask if you don't promote open source and community contribution.2

I need to setup a Windows Server with an AD (and therefore an own domain) that can be reached from a Linux host for a test environment... Holy crap I totally forgot what a huge pain in the ass that crap is!
Pro Tip: If youre connected to a Server via VPN and RDP and you create a domain and subsequently get logged out from the server, you're fucked.2 -
If you ever have noise sensitivity like me, use bluetooth headphone with active noise cancellation(wh1000xm4 is cool) during the day and wax earplugs during sleep.
That combo saves my sanity.1 -
Interviewer at Google: How did you come across this open position?
Candidate: I saw a student's post on LinkedIn where he got rejected in the first interview. I am active on LinkedIn so that I can learn from others' mistakes.
Interviewer: I will give you a chance to learn from your mistake. Please apply to Microsoft.8 -
i was trying to check a purchase i made on the store's website, so i tried to login, but I can't?? like, i fill the form and press login, and it doesn't? log in??? what the actual fuck, how are you supposed to do anything like that. isn't the login page the first thing they make? how doesn't it work? how is this website still active??4

If I find the genius who thought using getters and setters everywhere was a good idea, i'll gladly throw him into an active volcano.28

Don't rebase and force-push a shared feature branch that's still in active development. FFS. A "senior" developer should know better.1

Had my first Interview in more than 3 years.
What an adrenaline rush!
I'm feeling like I just rockclimbed an active volcano. -
My former employer refuses to pay out my vacation time per state law. Left a month ago but they have not disabled my company email account.
Small shop so no active directory but still shocked they have not disabled my access. It’s only outlook/ office 365 no access to network drives.
What kind of small, petty and (mostly) legal havoc can I cause?
Something annoying but causes no monetary damage.6 -
Just wanted to know: am I a single maniac in the world that likes to select text on websites and press-hold buttons/links often to check how they look in `:active: and `:focus` states, just for naught? 😂4

devRantron AutoStart on boot, is pure evil......
me (almost) everyday:
Today i want to complete <insert a task here>

Small rant. Why does clicking create a new event in Google calendars???? I am just trying to make it the active window, now I have to actually touch the keyboard to stop the madness!!1

How is everyone in this community still coding so much? Just 4 years into my career my active coding has reduced to almost half.10

When you would just check the school timetable for tomorrow, but when you unlock your phone you find devrant to be the active app, and you just scroll through everything, and forget why did you even unlock your phone...
Just devrant things... -
@dfox @trogus would you guys mind sharing some statistics on devRant? I've been very curious about the following metrics:
- Daily active users
- Weekly active users
- All time rants count
- Monthly comments count
- Total users count
Thanks for reading and thanks even more for making this beautiful platform 😃9 -
Software communities with dead chats and shitty documentation that call themselves "highly active". You aren't fooling anyone1

Hi all!
Its been a month now since I launched my first app on Play Store.
It has now got 2000 downloads with about 600 active installs. I also got some downloads on the paid version of the app (which is basically a donate version of the app).
I know there is always a room for improvement, but still, how am I doing?
And Merry Christmas to you all!5 -
I took a list on my job applications the other day. So far i’ve contacted 35 companies this year!
You can say about this covid crisis what you want but you can’t deny i’m pro-active. More talks tomorrow ánd friday. #wishmeluck -

If Jetbrains does _not_ release a new product every three months, a random employee gets thrown into an active volcano by HR.
But no worries, they have done it once again and are safe for yet another sprint! Say hello to Writerside, a feeble attempt to copy Obsidian MD: https://jetbrains.com/writerside/5 -
Me: You decided some records in system A should be obsolete, but the records are tied to active user accounts on the website. Now, I have users emailing and asking why their profile’s last name field says “shell record - do not use.”
Stakeholder: Oh…can’t you stop those profiles from loading? Or redirect the users to the right record in system A? In system A, we set up a relationship between the shell record and the active one.
Me: 😵 Um, no and no. If I stop a user’s profile from on the website, that’s just going to cause more confusion. And the only way to identify those shell record is to look at the last name field, a text field, for that shell record wording. Also, the website uses an API to query data from system A by user id. Whatever record relationship you established isn’t reflected in the vendor’s API. The website can’t get the right record from system A if it doesn’t have the right user id.7 -
Fuck it. Two big releases plus all the minor shit raining down on our team with only three active devs. A new team member who's unfortunately more of a burden and nuisance while the whole ship burns so beautifully....
And stupid me? I fucking break my arm, is in a cast now for four weeks. So I can mostly watch, while everything sinks.4 -

Sorry for not being active these last couple of weeks... That behavior data app was quite a lot of work in a very tight deadline (two weeks) at one moment my setup was getting out of hand (posted in comments)
But that's finally done, onwards to the next overly tight scheduled deadline!... Yaaaay... ☹️1 -
Why some people think it's fine to hire unexperienced people to do stuff, when there is no one in a company who could check if their code is fine?
Learning through active coding is fine. Until after two months later all you do is patching your code because you found out on stack that this is not a good way of doing it. -
MS teams
- user activity status doesnt update properly
- your status stays as ONLINE even when 30 minutes afk or goes to AWAY after two minutes of being afk and stays that way after you started working again.
- status sometimes does not update in active chat window when person's status on the other side changes.
- sometimes, messages dont appear, until I click into the app and force it to update the status from away to active
- I/O
- One day everything works, suddenly next day your mike doesnt work. Then your audio is mute altogether. Or you suddenly start hearing yourself (echo). All without any configuration changes or restarting whatsoever.
- UI
- Happens so often... You get a new message in your active chat window and you have to SCROLL DOWN MANUALLY to see it!!!
- Coppied text from chat? HERE'S A TIMESTAMP AND A NAME OF THE SENDER AS WELL!!!!!
And Im not even mentioning the performance itself...
Srsly this app is horrendous2 -
So I was searching how to speedup my page speed of site which is built on Codeigniter and despite minified css and js I read this:

I'm coding when suddenly a wild popup appears: "w10 scheduled to restart outside of active hours".
-> I want to change my active hours so I can progress w/o being interrupted by windows.
-> w10 doesn't allow me to set it to 8AM - 10PM because:
"Active hours can be set between 1 and 12 hours."
Well.. not sure what to think about this restriction.. It's definitely not dev-friendly ;)10 -

Request: My WordPress website, with over 40 plugins active, some of which do the same thing, but I want to keep them all active, because fuck logic is not loading fast enough. Please fix it!
Response: Kill it with fire and buld it from scratch. Use an optimized, custom solution, tailored to your exact needs. The time needed is the same as trying to fix your broken WordPress...
Reaction: WTF? Everybody is using WordPress, that means it's the best! Why would I build my custom website on a fast and easy to maintain custom platform, optimized for my needs? Fix my loading speed!
Response 2: *facepalm*4 -
Alright, so. If you had themes and things you would like to see in a cyberpunk novel what would they be? I already have corporate surveillance gone haywire, a neutered yet corrupt government, an active police state, and cyborgs. Protagonist is an on the grid citizen who is an off the grid hacker.3

Not a rant.
How many members and daily active users does devrant have? I feel like it's a sleeping giant.
@dfox and @trogus - you guys could be sitting on a fortune.8 -
Am I more active because I am feeling good, or is it because it's too hot here? 🤔

So I just read up on what the language D has to offer. It seems quite good!
- Active community
- Multiple compilers
- Modern (no header files, garbage collector, etc.)
- No VM or framework needed to run it (like C# and Java)
Looking forward to trying it out!
Does anyone have any experience with it? What are your thoughts?7 -

`alias pull="find . -name .git -print -execdir git pull \;"`
A while ago, I found someone asking about personal favorite aliases. I cannot find it now.
I am not a huge terminal user so I don't really care about keeping aliases until now.
It became annoying to `git pull` before doing anything when you are using two different machines regularly and there are always about a dozen active repos.2 -
I been practising lucid dreaming since a few years. It works and is amazing. Now I'm trying to use this moment of subconscious awareness to improve my ideas when sleeping. Yes, I kinda want to work in my dreams, when my brain has other mechanisms active. Can tell you, looks like it is possible!

Since I have seen a number of people ranting about their old rants and the new +1 threshold, I'm posting this to clarify.
In the rules you can see that a post counts towards a certain threshold if the rant was posted after the threshold became active. If the threshold was increased after you posted your rant, the previous threshold will still count for that rant.
Hope this helps. -

Can someone help me?
I want to program games, (2d & 3d) I have made games in clickteam and RPG Maker, but I want to program them. My biggest issue is my hardware. I have a not so powerful notebook, and I don't have Wifi. So online installers are off the table. (Nono, visual studio.) Syntax, I like clean, easy to read syntax, and I would like an active community. Any suggestions?15 -

What does my current job hate descriptive names? Like to the point of active antagonism? We're a subscription based service. Why is SubscriptionExpiration the date you log in? Why does SubscriptionStatus only contain the name and id of product you're subscribed to and nothing to do with an actual status? All I need is the date a user subscribed. Why is this so hard!?!?7

So I'm working on some communications app which bridges the main server/database with some equipment on the field. Now this equipment works in a redundancy pair: two cpus, A and B, both connected via ethernet, one active, the other standby/replicating and no comms on it. One obvious requirement is that when this equipment swaps the active cpus the comms app should switch as well. Fair enough, going with this into testing phase.
This guy, from qa, got some instructions from someone else:
1. Trigger the soft switch from equipment so that cpus got swapped.
2. Remove the ethernet cable from the standby unit.
3. Observe the communications.
And the test goes like: cpu A is active, B is standby. Switch is triggered, B becomes active, A goes into standby. The cable is pulled out from cpu B.
Test result: failed, no comms ever4 -
When you are at a crossroads, what helped you to decide?
I have two great job offers, and though my gut feeling is telling me to go one way due to tech stack and first communications, the other opportunity is (slightly) better paid and the company is much larger and nationwide active.3 -

To anyone with good knowledge of RxJs:

There were many issues that came about during my entire employment, but I woke up today with some, honestly, quite bizarre questions from my manager that made me open an account here. This is just the latest in many frustrations I have had.
For context, my manager is more of a "tech lead" who maintains a few projects, the number can probably be counted in one hand. So he does have the knowledge to make changes when needed.
A few weeks ago, I was asked to develop a utility tool to retrieve users from Active Directory and insert them into a MSSQL Database, pretty straight forward and there were no other requirements.
I developed it, tested it, pushed it to our repository, then deployed the latest build to the server that had Active Directory, told my manager that I had done so and left it at that.
A few weeks later,
Manager: "Can you update the tool to now support inserting to both MSSQL and MySQL?"
Me: "Sure." (Would've been nice to know that beforehand since I'm already working on something else but I understand that maybe it wasn't in the original scope)
I do that and redeploy it, even wrote documentation explaining what it did and how it worked. And as per his request, a technical documentation as well that explains more in depth how it works. The documents were uploaded as well.
A few days after I have done so,
Manager: "Can you send me the built program with the documentation directly?"
I said nothing and just did as he asked even though I know he could've just retrieved it himself considering I've uploaded and deployed them all.
This morning,
Manager: "When I click on this thing, I receive this error."
Me: "Where are you running the tool?"
Manager: "My own laptop."
Me: "Does your laptop have Active Directory?"
Manager: "Nope, but I am connected to the server with Active Directory."
Me: "Well the tool can only retrieve Active Directory information on a PC with it."
Manager: "Oh you mean it has to run on the PC with Active Directory?"
Me: "Yeah?"
Manager: "Alright. Also, what is the valid value for this configuration? You mentioned it is the Database connection string."
After that I just gave up and stopped responding. Not long after, he sent me a screenshot of the configuration file where he finally figured out what to put in.
A few minutes later,
Manager: "Got this error." And sends a screenshot that tells you what the error is.
Me: "The connection string you set is pointing to the wrong database schema."
Manager: "Oh whoops. Now it works. Anyway, what are these attribute values you retrieve from Active Directory? Also, what is the method you used to connect/query/retrieve the users? I need to document it down for the higher ups."
Me: "The values are the username, name and email? And as mentioned in the technical documentation, it's retrieving using this method."
The 2+ years I have been working with this company has been some of the most frustrating in my entire life. But thankfully, this is the final month I will be working with them.21 -

Depression is not a passive sorrow and lack of energy. My depression, being bipolar type I, is active, furious, burning pain within. My heart is pounding, and it hurts. The strong, blunt guilt for nothing I did in particular, and then the anxiety that is all around and over my view, reminiscent of how mould grows on a slice of bread.

Can anybody tell me the difference between ANC (active noise cancellation) and CVC (clear voice capture).
I want to buy a neckband and a variant of it says that it has active noise cancellation while other boasts of CVC and doesn't mention ANC .
I understand that cvc is used for in-call clear capture while active noise cancellation reduces the sound in music too.
Am i right ?
Does it mean the one with cVc won't work in music ?6 -

Hii,
I want to use HTML5 History API.
I'm using ajax to fetch whole page (Yes Whole page)
Then I'm searching a particular TAG and replace whole html code in container.
I'm feeling that I'm doing it so wrong.
Can anybody tell me best use of HTML5 History API.
This update data in page without reloading page, but I think this does not make any sense.
This is an Example of my Code, You'll get Idea:
$('body').on('click','a.ajax-nav-link',function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
//call ajax method, show data and update url via html5 history api :)
if (isHistorySupport) {
//fetch url associated with a tag
let url = $(this).attr("href");
let title = $(this).attr("data-title");
fetchPage(url);
$(".ajax-nav-link").removeClass("active");
$(this).addClass("active");
return false;
}else {
alert("Not Available");
}

Was assigned a ticket to figure out why some links disappeared when you navigated back and forth through the web application... After a few hours of digging and a bunch of var_dumps later, I find a gem buried in the newer part of the codebase that basically equated to:
$active = "get active flag from DB later";
I confronted the blamed developer and was told: "That statement is truthy, it works."
Another hour or two of passing session data through the obtuse class structure of this monolithic PHP app and the wonky behavior was fixed. -

It baffles me that although all they're doing is shuffling numbers around based on abstract descriptions of the target architecture and platform-specific behavior is completely out of the question, compilers are some of the least portable programs in active development.

So... the usual has happened and I've already got a wontfix this month. OTF PS3 FTP plugin "only supports passive mode, not active mode", will accept 500MB of uploaded data then close the port on passive mode. Guess which mode works flawlessly?1 -

Honest question. When do you consider yourself a "Big data engineer"?

Anyone here have experience with bountysource or doing code bounties to make a little extra? Bountysource seems interesting but the annoying thing is that you don’t know which ones are still active, and plus some seem to be more trouble than what they’re worth. Learning their codebase (at least the relevant stuff) and implementing a fix for 50 bucks? No way in hell

I had implemented an interval that was added when the viewport was active, and removed when inactive. This was to lessen the amount of ajax requests being done.
Though the little radio player was embedded at places, and thus the pictures didn't change at times.
I had to remove the inactivation of that interval. -

Do you use social networks?
What do you think, how important is social marketing for active users of social networks. For those who may not know, social marketing is the promotion of your page, blog, in various kinds of social media. For example, I am an active user of YouTube. I have a dream, 1 million subscribers. But starting was not easy at all. It is very difficult to break through the routine of thousands of other small channels. The guys from https://videosgrow.com/free-youtube... helped me in this. Now I’m half way to my dream, I have about 500 thousand subscribers, which I am undoubtedly glad.1
