Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for waiting for this new release of avatar items! We have new pets, new computers, new eye wear, some fun shirts and a special treat for our #1 ranter @linuxxx. The required ++ pts for these are a little higher than normal to reward the dedicated people who have helped support and build this community over the last few years. Thank you all!33

Boss 1: You have such a dedicated team of workers, how do you make them all come in time?
Boss 2: Its simple, 30 employees, 20 parking spaces.14 -
So CIA has backdoor access to almost all OS out there.
I guess switching to Temple OS is the only option if wants to be totally safe. The creator is literally crazy and dedicated about his OS.18 -
I'm having double feelings right now.
On my way to a best friends birthday party, really in for that!
Just bought a (for me) big dedicated server and can't wait to install it/play around with it!
😖😅11 -
Bought a dedicated server a while ago and now have around 1800gb out of 4 disks in it.
Hardly knew how to work with proxmox/raid setups and so on a few days ago.
Can configure the basics without thinking as for now!
Gotta love learning stuff with open technology and seeing yourself grow 😃6 -
Bought that server from a friend yesterday.
About to buy a second dedicated server (second hand) with 32gb's of ram!
This is getting out of hand 😅26 -
Co-worker: "Should we keep this server up and running?"
Me: "Hmmm…"
C: "Do we have any other uses for it than the dedicated wiki?"
M: "Not really, and maybe it's time to move to the centralised platform Corporate™ introduced. Have we checked if anyone is using the server?"
C: "Good point, let me see…"
C: "… oh it's been down for last two weeks since the power outage."
M: "I think that answers the question. Let's leave it like this for a month more and if no one complains we can announce it dead"3 -
Reinstalled my dedicated server yesterday.
Then you suddenly get errors saying that KVM isn't found.
Searching my ass off for hours because I damn well enabled Intel virtualization in the bios!
Double checked after a few hours.
THE FUCKER TURNED ITSELF OFF OR SOMETHING FOR THE SECOND TIME?! WELL, THERE GOES A FEW FUCKING HOURS 😡23 -
My new phone will probs arrive tomorrow and me and mates are going on a vacation to Germany next week.
Currently using nearly all bandwidth/ram of one of my dedicated servers to download maps for offline use (OpenStreetMaps) and convert them to formats OsmAnd can use.
No need for google maps ❤️59 -
Spend half the day setting up a dedicated server at work (including getting all the hardware together) and installing CentOS and tweaking around.
For a client? Oh no, there just literally wasn't anything else to do and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing or working on shell scripts AGAIN. (working in support (+ linux server management) and due to the holidays hardly any support requests come in)
*Hmmm, lets install nginx for fun*
"yum install ngi..."
*wait, let's compile from source and make it more fun!*
So yeah, that was my day, I guess.5 -
Although I do give some privacy related advice here and there on here, I'm planning on hiring a server dedicated to devRant regarding privacy/tiny simple tools.
I've got the folloing in mind:
- Host the privacy website
- Put a pi-hole server on it for everyone to use
- Own IP lookup API which would display it in a few data formats.
Any other ideas?74 -
DevRant idea: a dedicated section for people to show off their personal projects To inspire other devs4

Dev: To send push notifications, please open a ticket to get access to the new tool we are using which is dedicated to managing push notifications and push notification campaigns.
Me: ok done.
*5 days later*
Tool owner: Can you please add to the ticket the reason you need access?
Me: “To use it”2 -
Friend rents a nearly unused dedicated server and I have multiple hardly used servers (as in resource intensiveness).
Started a few monero miners on those servers, let's see how this goes 😅18 -
It's funny to see when certain stuff works without realizing it.
I've got multiple vpn servers and whenever I connect to one it sets my DNS to my pihole's one (hosted on one of my dedicated servers).
I keep forgetting to change my search engine to duckduckgo and no matter what I search for, no page is/was loading and manually have/had to go to duckduckgo.
Then I suddenly realized: the pihole has blacklisted Google so I literally can't connect to google.com/nl!
Awesome 😊56 -
Bought a 500gb apple hard drive for my dedicated server for like 20 euro.
Don't have any trays left and want to use it anyways.
I just shoved it in. It's actually working fine now 😅16 -
🎶 On the sixth day of debugging my program gave to me ...
6 failed tests
5 help forums
4 broken dependencies
3 edge cases
2 moving specs
And 1 keyboard smashed in rage 🎶
This little carol is dedicated to the buggy-as-fuck nodejs project I was given for fixes and updates.
Happy holidays everyone6 -
Lotus notes (or IBM Notes, as it is now called).
It is so efficient at frustrating you that when it hangs that it often requires its own dedicated task killer (killnotes) instead of Windows Task Manager.6 -
Everyday single day I have to give time for family, personal work and office. Prioritized in that order.
End result : low quality family time, pending personal projects. Office work - well that one is OK I guess cos the time is dedicated.
Solution : made a deal with wife - one day on weekend dedicated for family (she can plan anything she wants) and I will not do any work. Other day dedicated for my personal work/time (no family plans).
Divide weekdays similarly. On family days I checkout at sharp 4pm from office and come home straight spend the rest of the day with family alone. On the other days I stay either at office or go somewhere to work or hangout with dev buddies.
*Wife agrees*
End result: Quality family time. No interruption when coding (a dev would understand the importance of this). More productive work.6 -
Ordered a new high storage dedicated server (rented online) today.
The fucker wasn't delivered as soon as I hoped so decided to finally go to bed at 2am.
Aaaaaand then, of fucking-course, I got the email with the deployment notification literally the second before I went to sleep.
No sleep yet anyways, I guess 😅8 -
This next one is dedicated to a couple of special people at my workplace:
- The person who uploaded internal-use-only code to a personal repository on GitHub
- The network team that has blocked any and all access to GitHub
- The obscured mass of management bureaucracy that makes it pretty much impossible for anyone at my level to make any sort of appeal
This one's for you:
*ahem*
WHY?!3 -
Last year at work we started migrating our backend from PHP on a dedicated server to Node.js on AWS lamda functions
We went from 10 second calls to 70ms calls...
At this point our frontend is not even ready for this kind of speed 😅9 -
I have an idea. DevRant Groups. Keep the feed but, for example, have a Python group dedicated to discussion or rants about Python. Any one could make these groups. It would be similar to Thingiverse Groups.
What do you think?10 -
Hello devRant, a question for you.
I'm looking to redisign/setup my server 'infrastructure'.
It'll exist out of:
7 vps's (6+gb ram/500gb+/100mbs up/down per vps)
2 dedicated servers running as virtualization servers. (16gb/4tb/1gbit up/down and another one but let's leave that one out for now because it's gonna take a shit ton of time to solve that clusterfuck)
One server will function as an entry point for all websites I run, multiple database servers and multiple backup ones.
Any advices/tips/ideas?
Just a very serious hobby thing :)18 -
Finally made my laptop a dedicated linux machine, time to start working on a theme then to start on OS development until Gamemaker comes to linux! :-P14
-
I didn't expected that devrant could be this good, facebook is just full of spams nowadays and hard to find dedicated people. Thanks @condor for suggesting devrant16
-
Okay, help :(
Trying to get my dns server in php to work from the outside (it's on a vm on one of my dedi's) but it's not working.
- Port forwarding works well: confirmed.
- Connection type: UDP; confirmed.
- I *can* dig from the host (dedicated server) to the vm.
- nmap scans show an open port.
The exact same happens on my local network.
I'm lost.13 -
I worked for months staying up till 3am almost every night in order to collaborate with a team on another time zone. No one ever praised me or thanked me or gave me a pat.
Yesterday two members of that team stayed up till 2am once for the first time in their lives to make a release. They got immediately labelled as the most dedicated employees.
Okay, sounds fair.7 -
So I'm just finding out, today is Ada Lovelace day. I didnt realize Ada had a day dedicated to her. Today is gonna be only programming! I'm dedicating this shit code to her!1

Dedicated to all the OCD suffering in this rant:

Finally got ceph up and running, so far it does look really great!
At the moment we have 45 TB in the cluster, but we are able to expand it extremely easy.
Two servers with 256 GB RAM and 24 cores, three more with 32 GB and 12 cores.
Dedicated gigabit WAN connection.
The project is going forward strong, I'll let you know when it is time for beta testing.7 -
It took 2 fucking days for the network team to assign permission to my username to access 2 x dedicated servers on the network.
Like dude WTF, it's a 5 (max) minute job. I'm not judging just saying.2 -
Css was developed by monkeys. I fucking hate how there is no organisation, laying out stuff requires too much work, there are billions of ways to do something. Aligning things in css actually has a web page dedicated to that, seriously, what the fuck????? I love doing backend and creating rest apis but for the love of god i cant stand css and front end in general🤦🤦🤦8
-
I just discovered that my dedicated server is a tamagotchi laying around at somebody's home. While benchmarking cpu I discovered that it performed worse than my 4yr old chromebook with mediatek processor.4

THIS JUST IN: American colleges are dedicated to renaming "master's" degrees to "main's" degrees, following GitHub's example7

Started working at 3:30am today.
That either means I am dedicated or stupid. Maybe both.
For sure, my boss doesn't appreciate it, so I guess that makes me stupid then :)5 -
Recruiter: Hi! I'm a recruiter, and you have a position similar to jobs I'm trying to fill. What are you doing at your current company right now?
Me: Uhm. Working?
Recruiter: Oh! What would make a good candidate for positions like yours?
Me: Uhm. A dedicated employee? -
Finally finished setting up my private Git Repo.
First tried to install Gitlab, tried 2 hours to fix it. Holy shit the configs were a shit piece. Ended up at the end with a 502 error.
Fucking hate Gitlab, go die you piece of shit for dedicated servers.
Removed it and installed Gogs. Had 25 Minutes to set it up completly and I'm happy with it. ✌️
Dont won't to spent 7$ on private Repos for Github, when I have my own high power dedicated Server 😜20 -
Interviewer = I, Me = M
I: What is your project all about?
M: It is about reading data from memory of a program and transfer it to output register via a dedicated bus attached inside CPU and then projecting data of registers onto LCD crystals of display.
I: Can you show the working of your project?
M: Runs "hello world" program
Me - 1, Interviewer - Slap on my cheeks with shoe in one hand.3 -
Yesterday I pulled 36 straight hours of coding compression algorithms. So help me god, I never want to look at another... Until I need to continue next week. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯3

What was your most ridiculous story related to IT?
Mine was when I was quite small (11yo) and wanted a graphics card (the epoch of ATI Radeon 9800), looked at the invoice to know what kind of ports I had in the pc (did not open it), then proceeded to brat to my dad to get me a new GPU
So we where in Paris, we went to a shop, vendor asked me "PCI or AGP?" and said AGP.
Paris > London > Isle of Skye roadtrip followed, then as my dad brought me back home in Switzerland, we opened my pc...
And we couldn't fit the GPU in the basic old PCI port. My Dad was pissed. He frustratedly tried fitting the GPU in the PCI slot, but nope. (He's a software engineer though)
At least the GPU had 256 mb of ram :D
Gave it to my brother 6 months later at family gathering
To this day, my Dad still thinks I cannot handle hardware, although I have successfully built 10+ pc, and still cringes with a laughing smile when I talk to him about it haha
Ah well.1 -
Fuck why is there no dedicated button to turn autocorrect on and off, that would be so useful, because I actually typo a lot on mobile, but the learning of it is trash, so for basic devrant stuff it's fine, but anywhere else it doesnt know what to do14
-
Does anyone use https://vpsserver.com ?
Looking at migrating from an expensive VPS host to something self managed and potentially dedicated for my personal sites.
these guys seem to stand out at the price point without going to something like digital ocean / aws.
Or does anyone have any recommendations before I drop a few quid into them?2 -
Recently purchased a few edge AI devices at work, and management sent some people to box up and get rid of our dedicated GPUs, since we "just got new AI computers." Now futilely trying to explain to management that not all computers are exactly the same...3

** PSA to all programming language and tool maintainers **
Please for the love of god have a dedicated examples section on your website where people can quickly evaluate what the thing even looks like

Finally bought a macbook for my android app development. Paid 1600 EUR for 2015 MID mbpro with 512GB SSD, 16gb ram, 2.5ghz quad core i7 cpu and dedicated gpu. I know I overpaid but I couldnt fkin stand working on windows anymore. I spent one year with fcking windows building android apps. Making apps on windows is fking impossible. And dont even get me started on new crap macbooks starting from 2016 :/19

So I work for an ISP in the customer support center and we use slack for communication... As you can tell by my starred channels; we do plenty of work...
(Yes, potato is dedicated to nothing but potato)6 -
Don't you love transferring server hosts and paying for a dedicated IP only to get given an IP that is already in use and forward it using the incorrect port .-.
*Deep breathing*1 -
A added bonus of writing in UIKit and in Swift is the automatic macOS support. Yes, this is the devRant rewrite working on macOS, fully featured. And while this still requires some work and some fixes involving window resizing and how to handle image resizing, this is surprisingly usable for almost no dedicated macOS code!
(This post was sent using the AltRant client on macOS)11 -

I want to present to you:
My new server closet!
It's called "SaaSBox" from a German meme. Pls don't rate my cable management 😂
It isn't finished jet there is missing an AP and a dedicated modem.16 -
.net 1.1 had the best documentation ever written. Microsoft spent an enormous amount of money and a dedicated team of skilled engineers just to write them. It was kind of a great time to be a developer, even though the technology is much better now. The current reliance on community docs doesn't hold up as well.2

Dedicated to Youtube developers who just happened to see us 500 error & some nice monkey joke. :)

Even this Google Survey knows the pecking order for voice assistants 🤣 Cortona gets a dedicated line while Bixby gets the "Other" line.7

My employer uses latest and greatest macbooks. It's fuking awesome. I wasn't a fan until I found the ease of android and iOS development on it. I even started using Atom for web development. And I bought a Mac mini for a dedicated jenkins server. I don't think I'll ever go back to windows. There's just no point. I know it's expensive but it gets the job done. No more fukin mac VMs on VMware. Fuk that shit.20

Today I learned that docker makes all ports publicly available by default on Ubuntu servers using UFW.
Why? Because for some reason docker bypasses the UFW and has done so since 2014.
Thinking about this, I'm a bit irritated to say the least. Infuriated about such reckless behavior would be another reaction.
Anyhow, in case you have docker running on some forgotten Ubuntu server without a dedicated FW/VPN see https://github.com/chaifeng/... for more details.11 -
Is there a worst piece of junk than Sharepoint? 32gb ram on a dedicated server, clean install... Runs like a dead cat that was ran over by a train several times and full of retarded errors... Sigh...

[worst hypothetical dev job]
You know how theres a dedicated person in porn whos job is blowing the actors so they are hard? That, but with writing all the boilerplate code and nothing else.1 -
This is true incident.
I fried the motherboard of my new Windows 10 Home ASUS UX303UA laptop having 8 fucking gigs of RAM and 1TB HDD with dedicated Nvidia Graphics Card and video memory by just trying to repeat what I love to do which is :
Install and play Crysis on EA Origin paid channel
And
Install and program on Linux VM using Virtualbox
And
Listen to music
I am so fucking scared now that I am not going to repeat it again.
I fuck the fear of using such machines.21 -
Smartphone camera applications need to show this notification whenever a user records a video vertically.
Otherwise, many smartphone users will never learn to drop the vertical filming habit and to film horizontally.
This is a major benefit of dedicated cameras and camcorders: their user interface is aligned for being held horizontally, so people do so habitually. This is not the case with mobile phones.4 -
I love job posts made by HR cronies:
"A majority of your time will be enabling development in our React Native app with a large amount of time dedicated to the rest of our stack."
So, if my math is correct... a majority is greater than 50%... but... "a large amount of time" meaning the rest?
Another job post asking for the typical 10x dev

Time to drill holes move cables and relocate the server to a more cooler place in the home :P7 -
The whole dev community.
Those who have dedicated time and energy to share solutions, tricks, bug-solving ideas, codes that I can steal; teach me patiently even though I am slow, cheer me up when I am down because I'm stuck debugging for hours, brighten me up with programming jokes when I am sad.
Those who have allowed me to earn good money in the field that I really enjoy.
Yeah, including you 😘 -
DevRant is so purely dedicated to ranting that if one has to talk about coding and development, he/she should tag it "off-topic".1
-
Providing hosting and site management services to clients was the best decision Ive ever made. Now they don't get access to their websites until I get paid.
Getting a managed dedicated server was an even better decision. Allowing me to focus on the development while a professional team takes care of my clients security.3 -
Spotify app for Android got an update. In the old version, there was a dedicated button to show the queue so you could reorder it. Now, it's hidden in a menu and takes 2 clicks to see you queue. What the fuck guys.1

Just spent over 5 hours trying to figure out Microsoft’s OneDrive REST api. Basically my first time trying to do POSTs n’ stuff. I got very very close, but the server kept throwing 400 error codes. Eventually I had to give up and ask Stack Overflow. Going to bed now at 2:20am. No worse feeling then not being able to solve a problem you’re dedicated on solving. :/4

just bought (rented) my first dedicated server, for flipping 10€/month. let's see how it goes! boy, am i excited for my new toy...5

just bought a dedicated server, coming in the mail this Friday. gonna use it for a 24/7 Minecraft server and maybe some web apps to experiment with stuff. I'm also going to have it connected to my TV as a media center occasionally. best Linux distro for dedicated server? bonus points for easy to install and configure14
-
Looks like my users are enjoying themselves. Bringing my poor dedicated server to a load average of 72/8 at full CPU usage.
If only I wasn't just running an open source project by myself with only crowd-source money to rely on for server costs :v -
Feels scary to purchase my first ever dedicated server. After two years using VPSs (and paying 5$ a month for that xD)
It feels scary and exciting to know they are somewhere in the world, setting up a new machine just for me! xD
- regardless of whether they are actually setting up a new machine or just starting a preinstalled machine, let me live the fantasy of being special here xD8 -
What is your home network infrastructure like?
Ethernet or is everything WiFi? Is there a dedicated firewall? Servers running on a raspberry? Do you have VLANs configured?23 -
Well, our board dedicated to On call has so many tickets that given the rate our team is going, it'll take 30+ years to finish them all.
Oh and it keeps growing -
I hate programming tutorials for a complicated language like c++ that are dedicated to absolute beginners of programming. If you've never coded before, why are you trying to learn c++?5

My best colleague uses FTP-integration to save all edits directly to production.
Confronted him about it and we bought a dedicated server for development.
2 weeks later the server is dedicated to serve the API. He still asks me to develop on that server.
Great guy, great mind. He gets things done.1 -
Start an organization dedicated to building technology that helps people suffering from mental illness.
I also want to be able to work remotely while travelling and rock climbing. -
Do your companies have dedicated software / web architects / designers, or are most places just a group of developers who are also expected to do design and architecture work?
Do you have dedicated front end teams and back end teams, or are most places just a mix of people who do everything?
I'm asking this because im a junior dev being given a large project, mostly to head up on my own (!), where I have to do design and architecture work which I feel is completely out of my comfort zone, and I want to know if this kind of thing happens often? Are developers supposed to design specs, pick the tech to use.. etc.?6 -
Imagine implementing PHP scripts which execute shell commands defined in URL GET query params on your customer's dedicated server without any basic authentication or similar. The only security is by barely obfuscating it's URL.
I think I've seen it all now...3 -
Is there some way to format code on devrant or say, surround a section of text with (at minimum) italics?
I mean we *are* on a site dedicated to developers.22 -
You know you could buy any game whenever you want but they are just way too expensive...
But now you got a paysafecard for christmas... now you have to buy a game... I mean... the money was dedicated for games... it would be wrong not to buy a game...
BEST PRESENT EVER2 -
When I was challenged by my teacher to develop an application for a Solid Mechanics class at university. I developed a dedicated calculator which returned all the results of a given problem, one of which had a graph! I made it with MIT App Inventor and later on took it to Android Studio with a friend of mine.
Best feeling I had at that time! -
I'm currently planning to set myselv up with some vps/dedicated server's for a project. What i plan to do to secure these servers is.
*Use centos 7
* Setup Wireguard and join all of the servers +1 client (my pc) to that network
*Disable SSH Access from outside that VPN
*Only allow RSA Key login to the Servers
*Install Cockpit for monitoring
*Intall docker/kubernetes for the applications i plan to run
What do you guys think of that as a baseline? Im not sure if my lower powered VPS (VPS M SSD from Contabo) will work as Kubernetes Nodes, does anyone have experience with that?
In general these Servers will be used for my projects and other fooling around.
If you guys have other suggestions for Securing/monitoring or other software i could put on to have more control without eating up to much of the Servers power, let me know :D12 -
Make all fancy Azure blob storage with SFTP connection through firewall with dedicated public IP.

Just earlier today I was looking at the hosting packages for a local hosting provider in my country (who shall remain unnamed as I want to work there and criticizing them might not be a very good idea right now) and they start at €250/month apparently. I thought - that's fucking ridiculous!
Like for real, I could literally buy a server for.. I dunno, €600 from the likes of bargainhardware.co.uk with some pretty darn good specs, put it in my home, get a business contract with my ISP for say around €100/month (and use it for my own purposes as well instead of my consumer contract, win-win!), and the server would pay for itself in no more than half a year, probably even less! And you're even getting the actual hardware with it!! And that is for the price of that hosting provider's starting option!!!
Now I know what you're thinking, sure there's more to servers than just the server itself, like redundant power, generators, SLA, multiple routers and switches, and all sorts of failover measures. And you are absolutely right. But does that really justify a rental cost of a server of €250/month?
Not only that, even their shared hosting.. shared hosting, the dreaded, shitty shared hosting! solution is starting at around €10/month. I'm paying about €5/month for 3 light-duty servers and a domain for Christ's sake!
So.. is this hosting provider just expensive as fuck or is this really the industry standard, particularly for the dedicated hosting part? And maybe that's why some services like.. say devRant which apparently gets around €600/month from 299 supporters at the time of writing, yet still has @dfox and @trogus pay from their own wallets for it (if at all possible, please let me know if that's still the case).. I wonder if those costs are all really justifiable?
It just strikes me as odd.. you can get *a lot* of server for a couple hundred bucks if you do it well.. no?16 -
I've been a dedicated Golang programmer for a few years now.
But lately I learned rust, and now even the thought of garbage collection makes me davastated :(1 -
One of the projects started a year ago was to replace our tech/status dashboard. Two of our new people were even dedicated to developing it full time for 6 ~ 8 months. I found out today the entire board is gone, and it's been replaced to a link to Service Now.
Nearly a year of work, completely flushed down the tubes. Glad I wasn't on that project.2 -
Last year I switched to a dedicated server with several IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. Getting Docker to direct traffic (both ingress/egress) to specific IP addresses is way more difficult than it should be. I wrote a tutorial for anyone else who's interested:

I didn't know why I didn't ever told it:
I did a few multiplayer projects in Unity 4 Engine (beloved old multiplayer) and I wanted to create a custom dedicated server within the Unity engine.
I created a new project and started programming. The clients even connected to the server but I couldn't figure out how to sync the world's because the blocks the world was made of existed in both projects, but had different IDs (didn't knew there were IDs).
After a bit of googling I found out that it isn't possible to sync these projects. Tired of myself giving up I tried a different route and found out that these IDs would sync of you exported them as asset pack. So I did!
And it worked ❤️❤️❤️❤️
So I could have a less power heavy dedicated within the unity engine.
(PS: I knew I just could made a server in C# or so with sockets and what ever, but 12 year old me doesn't knew sockets) -

Guys looking for advise. Does anyone of you using Virtual Machine inside a dedicated Windows Server?7 -
I have a random question:
What values do you guys live with?
And how can I make sure I live my life with highest possible values?
The squad here is most raw and honest. I have seen you folks stick to what you believe in and stand up against the evil even if costs you or makes you sacrifice somethings.
Really want to be a better human and seems like my next phase of life would be dedicated to this.20 -
I wonder how many electrons have dedicated part of their existence so I can watch cat videos on YouTube...1

When I say I'm in "DevOps" what I really mean is that I'm a full-stack engineer, DBA, system administrator, security engineer, auditor, cloud custodian, cost optimization expert, and everything else that doesn't get its own dedicated staff member here. Pretty much the catch all between developers and customer.

Anyone knows a good and cheap hoster for shared and dedicated hosting in the USA?
I'm kinda flabbergasted when e.g looking at Digital Ocean.
8 GB, 4 cores, shared - 40 $ per month.
Like... What the frigging fuck Oo8 -
How many of you have watched clannad?

I made my own blog dedicated to personal rants on ZeroNet and count already 34 people sharing it. That's insane. I guess people like people ranting and that's what @trogus and @dfox figured before everyone ;)13

During my first project in one of the SQLite statements I didn’t realize that it needed single quotes since I was new to it. So I brushed that off but when working on the next function for the program 8 hours were dedicated to debugging to only realize that the error was caused because I forgot the fucking single quotes. I need a bit of advice, I'm looking to rent a dedicated server for dev and test small projects and maybe host a site in the future but mainly a box I can access from everywhere and constantly online
I checked out ovh and server4you but I wanted real experience from a community I can trust, any recommendations?9 -
Wrote a good backup program, no one cares. I mean, its great if you want to create fast offsite backups! And it is simple to use, and has a pretty dedicated developer working on it all day long (Me)... Well, of course you would want to check it out, so here you go https://github.com/paulkramme/...7

If Apple didn't jack up their prices and offered decent dedicated GPUs they'd actually be fuckin great... the greed is just too damn high with them
P.S. I might have to get a Macbook because of an iOS project, but I really want something that can game at least a bit... at the end of the day it's not my decision, I'll get what they give me3 -
Welcome to the future, where a video platform is a better radio station than a dedicated music service.7

This huge OS project, Magento, have TONS of guidelines, most about decoupling,, it has an extended MVC structure with even more layers than those 3.. All good in theory, guess what.. Guidelines is not followed..
Changing order of two blocks in the view breaks business logic.. So much for decoupling.. You would not believe how many hours I've spent debugging this..
And I can't believe I've dedicated 12 years of my professional live to this platform..2 -
When I was in 6th grade, and we were learning HTML, and I realised the power my fingers suddenly held as Chrome (ugh) loaded up my frst webpage with some basic styling. At that moment, I understood the extensibility, the dyanmicity (My English teacher would kill me), the pure awsomeness I could do with a text file. In three years (now), I finally made a calendar that works which has comments, is split into dedicated files, works, is clean and written in D, and works.

I have too many geeky non-dev activities. I don't know which is the geekiest...
Built a server rack out of bits of spare wood (going to rebuild and improve it in future). Wired up the entire house with network cabling. Didn't need to, just prefer not to use WiFi for things where possible. Also ceiling mounted a PoE WiFi AP for things that have to use WiFi (e.g. smartphones).
DIY built a rack mountable Pi shelf with faceplate.
Configured a dedicated TV tuner/PVR PC used by Kodi running on Raspberry Pi for a couple of TVs (all diskless/network boot).
Got a colocated server running in a data centre for running various VMs on for different things. Run my own email, webserver, DNS, VPN, voice chat server, various other stuff.
Gradually getting into electronics, which overlaps with dev a bit.
Sometimes I play games. I built a dedicated VR PC which occupies the smallest room of the house.
Unsure which is the geekiest thing!3 -
@linuxxx I'm about to found a start-up.
In fact me and my buddy with some freelancing contracts. And we are in need of a dedicated server.
Our plan is to host the clients inside docket container.
Technology would be dotnet core and either react/angular/Vue.js, if that matters.
The host will run on arch, because I feel in love with it! 😍
Do you have any suggestions for a provider for us?
Budget between 100-125€
Location: Germany.
Thanks in advance!6 -
My mouse/keyboard(+numpad) combo.
Why does Microsoft think that everyone needs a dedicated key to open the calculator?! I have one on both my keyboard (top-right) and the separate numpad. I used to press the calculator button by mistake when going for backspace - remapped it now.2 -
I don't think anyone said it yet so I'll have to choose osu!. It's a rhythm game and now it is being remade as open source. It also uses a open source game engine dedicated to rythm games. The osu staff is great and the main dev (peppy) streams on twitch while making the game sometimes.
It's a great project and I hope I can contribute some day.6 -

I find IT to be an amazing field. There are so many parts to it that take tremendous dedication to fully understand, yet, each part works together.
Teams of people dedicated their entire life to software development, which would be impossible if teams of people did not dedicated their entire life to the development of operating systems. That would be impossible if teams of people did not dedicated their entire life to integrating hardware and software. That again would be impossible if teams of people did not dedicated their entire life to electrical engineering.
I know I missed tons of subfields that link everything together, but just the massive amount of dedication and teamwork to make something as simple as a console application work properly is amazing. I wish I could understand it all and I hope everything will always be as easily accessible my entire life as it is now.2 -

Which database program do you use? MySQL, MongoDB etc.
I'm using MySQL at the moment, but a lot of jobs requires MongoDB. Does anyone know why?
Though I can't get it to work on my dedicated server, giving up for now...12 -
I will need a laptop for uni and I thought you guys could give me some tips on good brands/models. I want it to have at least 16GB of RAM, preferably a newer generation of i7 and dedicated NVidia graphics. The bigger the screen is the better. I don't care too much about the battery but I would like to have a few USB type A ports and some HDMI/DP outputs. The maximum price (shipping included) should be around 1000 - 1200€15

I am about to buy a ded. server for the first time in my career for a SaaS project (also first time envolved in a huge project like this) and the first that I am full time dev and full time team leader. I am excited as fuck about this.

Hey all! M gonna b buying a new laptop for programming.
I need something with like 16 gigs RAM, decent processor, SSD.
I can't buy thinkpad because well... It shud have been ~$750 but in my country, it costs $1200. And that is for the 8GB RAM config... E470... 570 isn't even available.
Hence since the lack of laptops without dedicated GPU but high configs, I basically can find 2 options:
Dell XPS
MacBook
So I wanna ask what would you guys prefer? I code in C/C++ pretty much exclusively. And I definitely like butter smooth functioning of OS.
If it ain't a MacBook, i'll b using Arch Linux.
Finally, I live in india.
So... Which one do I pick? And if u have a recommendation, I m open for that too. It shud just have good specs BUT NO DEDICATED GPU.
Thanks 😄8 -
Our newest project has 8 leaders / managers pluss project owner and dedicated process manager and 1 developer to do the actual work.

Hey everyone, need some help/opinions, I quite literally have almost no time anymore for alot of thing specially try share alot of news here (not the Intel mess, I reported some of that stuff before it exploded) I share most of that news in my site though, but I really wanted to ask people here that may work for hostings companies if they know about the retardation of Nvidia in their change of Terms of Services for their GPU usage (https://legionfront.me/posts/1936 ) and also want to know if users here are if they are looking for dedicated servers, mainly GPU servers for their works and what are you look for (specs and such) or rather where

As I've been a windows user as long as I can remember, Mac OS always seemed like the COOL OS. until I started using it. I mean, seriously apple? you cannot cut and paste a file? you cannot move a window to another monitor if there's an app in full screen? screenshots are saved in the desktop instead of a dedicated folder & I cant even change it?12

Is there a team that works truly productive and happy via an agile (scrum) workflow?
Or does it always distill down to an excuse for a chaotic workflow?
My experience and cynic nature has let me to assume the latter.
(That being said, I never had a dedicated scrum master to work with. So that may be the first of many problems.)4 -
I've been playing with code for years, but only finally started trying to make it profitable by working through making websites for cash. A friend of mine is just getting into it brand new and is really dedicated. He is going to learn fast and I'm going to be able to walk him through a lot of my mistakes to move much faster than I did.
Is it bad that my favorite part of this relationship is that I will have someone that understands me when I make fun of jQuery? -
What a pain it is getting Linux/Arch setup perfectly on a MacBook Pro. Overheating like a mofo. ACPI shitstorm, integrated GPU disabled by default and need a hack to enable it outside of macos, fan control is wack.
Solved most of this crap but still can't completely disable the Nvidia GPU, so both integrated and dedicated are powered on. Frustrated AF.2 -
I believe that without competition, YouTube would likely ban re-uploads entirely.
YouTube thankfully tolerates re-uploads of deleted videos because it knows that the minute they prohibit re-uploads, competitors like Dailymotion and BitchUte would get immediate massive growth.
There are entire channels dedicated to re-uploading deleted videos of specific channels! (for example: https://youtube.com/channel/... )
In 2017, YouTube alternatives were rather immature, but they have developed: https://youtube.com/watch/... -
Finally got around to some real video encoding work on my new computer but noticing it's not blazing fast...
And more work is still handled by the CPU... But I thought video processing is handled by the GPU, which seems to be barely used at all. I'm using Handbrake but I thought the whole point of dedicated GPU was for intensive graphics and video processing?6 -
Are there any Italian devs here? Or anyone who wants to move to italy? 😂
I built startupjobsitalia com a couple months ago to help early Italian startups and founders find local talent. I moved to Italy from Norway in 2022 and noticed that there wasn't a dedicated site for this like they have in the Nordics!
It was a good way to learn Next.js, OAuth, and Supabase, but it'd be way cooler if Italians could actually get some value out of it🤞🏻2 -
Long one
So our newest team-mate has made a channel dedicated to make fun of or scrum master, then I send him a pm saying to cut out the childs play, and we need to act professional.

WTF...
Really WTF ... am I the bad guy for caring about my team??3 -

Hi everyone, long time no see! I have a question for you all.
Where does your company keep its clients’ code on GitHub? Is it everything in the company’s GitHub Org or does each client have a dedicated GitHub Org?
Any issues you guys have encountered with either approach?6 -
Imagine an entire operating system dedicated to running a web browser and only 1 web browser 10 years ago it would have been thought of as insanity2

I wish there was more dedicated, physical spaces that were tailored to programmers in particular. Job Interviews and technical tests...
Why when interviewing for full stack Angular(typescript ) / C# do they expect devs to be as good at C# as a 100% dedicated C# dev.
Why do they expect them to be as good as a 100% dedicated jQuery/pure javascript dev when 50% of the job is for Angular/typescript. WTF?
Full stack devs typically are constantly jumping around between tech stacks so they're always "working it out"
You hire a generalist because you want a generalist. Don't interview and test them like they're 2 specialists combined into 1.2 -

Index.php everywhere (no mod rewrite)
Everything in the www root.
By pixel css.

PHP dev help/advice needed!
We have problems with mysql. Still stuck with mariaDB, I'm using indexes (correct ones) and we have problems with scaling. we have a few tables with over 100mil rows, 1 of them is being read every morning with a subselect that counts unique rows, and fails every time because of timeout/lock, the temp table size was increased and helped for a little while but as time goes on the table grows and the problem reappears. I'm reading from a slave server that was purposely created for read only, yet we still have problems. We're using managed dedicated servers for out hosting and they aren't willing to optimise the database configs for our needs. What are the easiest options for scaling at this point? Going fully dedicated server and perconaDB? NOsql? Sharding the server? Anyone got any good blogposts or something to read about this? your own experience?11 -
Fuck this Apple Macbook Pro 16" which takes 20W to drive two simple full HD displays in idle mode off the dedicated GPU with fans running at 3000 RPM.
I would love to get back my 2013 MBP which worked flawlessly without hearing the fans even in the hardest conditions while compiling stuff.
Even the most basic and cheap windows notebooks are able to drive two displays with 1W and no fans whatsoever in idle mode.
Damn Apple. Fuck this notebook.12 -
Microsoft ends support for Windows 7
Support for Windows 7 ended this week which means that security or software updates will no longer be provided by Microsoft.
Windows 7 will continue to run however it will be more vulnerable to viruses and malware. The best way to remain secure is to use the latest operating system available.
Microsoft have a dedicated webpage for user questions, next steps and detailed advice. 👇

Usually, the best approach to get a quick answer is by sending a DM.
To my surprise, the person mentioned that he will check it (then typical radio silence).
Next step, post in a channel that is dedicated to that topic, nothing.
Let's try an experience, I posted the same thing in a channel that the project manager has access to it. He just added an emoji and within 5 mn everyone was adding his input to the thread.
It seems that's the way how things work here 🤷♂️7 -
"Longest you worked without rest + why?"
Maybe around 7hrs or so? It may not be much, but the thing is that I had to work almost the whole night through.
I was about to show off a game at the school festival, and I had to finish multiple playable stages while not having a dedicated stage editor application; I was using Notepad as the stage builder. I had to work through the night before the event.
Ended up catching the flu after the event, but I don't regret it.1 -
How the fuck do I handle self-called senior developers who do not want to do testing (writing unit tests and manually testing) in an agile environment where there is dedicated tester anymore?
They behave like fresh programmers out of college only wanting to write their code and nothing more. We had a dedicated tester role but that guy left the project. -

I'm looking into buying a new laptop. I want something speak and ultrabookish, but dedicated graphics are a must.
Will be mostly for work, so a good CPU and RAM are important, but probably will do some gaming. Battery life and cooling are pretty big too. I can't find a solution that I like for managing email/calendar in one whack for Linux. I use Debian, and am currently using Evolution mail client, but the calendar doesn't sync with my Exchange. I tried IceDove, but didn't love the mail (or calendar) client.
For my Linux brethren out there, what do you use to manage email/calendar? I've heard G-Suite used a lot, but I'd rather have native software than a dedicated browser window.
Thanks ahead of time.4 -
I got a fuzzy understanding of differences between Platform as a Service (PaaS) , Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).
I wanted you guy to clarify it for me. For me
IaaS = You choose how much RAM , CPU , Storage you wanted and the provider create the OS for you by virtualization technology and you can do whatever you want on that OS
PaaS = The provider said here is a services (database , docker ,---etc) we offer to help you develop your own software. You use the service we offer and we charge you by how much you use our service.
SaaS = The provider said here is the complete software. You can just use the software and we charge you how many request you send or how many data you store,--etc.
Is the differences between IaaS and dedicated server is that in IaaS you may share the server with other client by virtualization and dedicated server give you the whole server?13 -

What are the things needed. Am I missing something?21 -

In your opinion, is it better to work in a dedicated development company (or otherwise dedicated to your IT specialization) or be in-house?
I'm currently one of 2 in-house devs for a small enterprise. So my software engineering practices and code won't be of the highest quality but at this early stage of my career I'm gaining experience in various different aspects of the job and doing many individual different things. So overall I'd say being in-house is good early on for initial exposure, so long as you have a mentor to help you out. -

We’re using Karma + Jasmine for writing unit tests, because it’s the default, and run them on GitLab CI in a Docker container. For UI testing we don’t use the default Protractor but Selenium, because we haven’t found a way to run Protractor tests with a dedicated webserver.1 -
Hello, I'm kinda stuck in this problem: Lets say, I want to give each of my users a dedicated IP address. How do I do it? & what's the best way to do it with python?
No need to share code, just some instructions/guideline would perfect. Thanks in advance.19 -
What is best equivalent to Slack? we switched to Rocket chat but UI is terrible, every one gets confused in channels when there is too many threads and replys. I need a free alternative which we can deploy its dedicated instance on our own server. also I prefer open source software with mobile support and better UI/UX than rocker chat.7

All you front end devs who work with dedicated design teams, what's you usual workflow? Do the designers pass on the UI kit with all the assets and dimensions and you clone the thing using whatever stack you're using or do you all decide the specs on the fly looking at the general visual structure of the design?5

Maybe a wierd question, I'm transitioning from a VPS with panel to a dedicated server without (because I want to learn how to do it my self) but I'm having problems with the email server. It is a Ubuntu based server and I was wondering if someone can teach me how to set it up.6

Just started typing "devr..." in the address bar, not realising my keyboard was in cyrillic mode.
So instead of reading about b2plane's shits and hurriedly scrolling past AI-generated creepy anime kids, I've been reading about Великоустюгский Многопрофильный колледж.
If I was more dedicated in my language studies I might have understood more than 10% of it. -
I'm compiling an entire Android build from source. Even with 16 dedicated compilation threads, it's like watching paint dry.
It's nowhere near my early days taking over 24 hours to compile a Linux kernel... But it's still painful. -
Please don't use Google as a verb.
1. It is not the only search engine
2. I don't like Google as a verb
3. I don't like Google as a company
4. We have a dedicated word for it in english, called "WebSearch" or simply "Search". -
I sometimes see people looking for people for a project collab on Devrant. Are there good websites dedicated to only this purpose?1
-
Can we use this tool to invite collaborators to our projects ? Specifically is there a section of this dedicated to advertising our projects as open to collaboration ?5

Devs/cs majors seem to be the most dedicated to learning out of any group of people at my school, anyone think this is true beyond school?

Holy shit why does change management have to be such garbage? I've never worked anywhere with a formal change process that felt remotely like it adds value. It seems like it's even WORSE when there's a dedicated change/process team. They just get super edgy and jaded, likely because no one wants to follow their ridiculous requirements, and bitch at people whenever the real world happens and things have to happen "out of band".2

//not a rant
In Semptember I will be attending information technology at university, and I was wondering what kind of laptop should I buy:
optimal screen size? (13.3 or 15.6)
ram? (for VMs)
processor?
dedicated graphics? (or should I just stick to integrated)
I will be mainly coding, running VMs and school stuff(maybe some casual game like League or Minrcraft), so I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the decision18 -
I often have to use files on Linux, Mac OS and Windows. I've had multiple issues trying to swap files across the platforms. Is there a solution I can use to replace USB storage? A dedicated server or something?2
-
Hi guys, what specs do your coding laptop has? I would especially like to know if your laptop has a dedicated graphic card or an integrated one.
Mine has an i7, 32gb of ram, 500gb m2 SSD and an integrated graphic chip.11 -
A productive meeting requires:
1. an agenda that covers every aspect that the meeting should be about
2. Everyone at the meeting gets a chance to provide feedback and or speak about their role in the project and what's the hold up.
3. All participants or at least a dedicated one takes notes about what is covered so that people aren't asking the same questions the very next day. -
I've a classic class in C#: RelayCommand. It's just a general purpose ICommand implementation. I want to use a dedicated namespace for it. I cannot use MyCompany.RelayCommand because using the same-class-name as namespace causes problems. What do you suggest?2

Does anyone use routerhosting?
Routerhsoting seems to be the cheapest of all but in quality I am not sure, anyone used them before?
For sure they are the good choice if I'm trying to get away from Bluehosts or digitalocean since they are expenesive. But in temrs of qulity and since I am looking for a dedicated server I am not sure.3 -
does anyone know a hosting service that allows installing 3rd party SSL certificate (Comodo) FOR FREE, WITHOUT buying overpriced 70$/year additional dedicated IP?4

NerdySeal is a company that specializes in academic assignments. We have been helping students with their studies for years, and we are dedicated to providing the best essay samples on the internet. Why are fucking people do dedicated to destroying everyone else's purpose ?
There has to be a record
Records and history matter
There has to be something sentimental
There has to be something nostalgic
Much in the same way as they can be classified this entire time period didn't have to be but had ended up being one big gaping empty hole
And they all ate themselves

Software Development is a very isolating profession. Everytime I spend a few months focusing on a big project for a client, I end up needing to learn how to interact with people and be social again.
What solutions would one offer to keep the social skills at least stagnat during dedicated software development?1 -
I feel like we should ressurect devops reactions on devrant, and put dedicated tab right beside stories and projects,1
