(Q: How much are you allowed to Google as a developer?)
“You’re allowed to Google as much as you want. This is not school, you’re employed to solve a problem. Nobody cares whether you Google for the answer or remember the answer from another Googling.”15 -
"Turn it off and on again."
Great for Wi-Fi routers and office appliances.
Life support, not so much.9 -
Interviewer: "Do you know Xamarin?"
Me: "I mean I know C# but not app development"
Interviewer: "You're hired!"
Thats pretty much how my interview went12 -
text-align: center
Designer: “it’s not cantered, it’s 2px too much to the left”
Me: *does nothing* “what about now?”
Designer: “perfect”
Yup. This IS the Truman show.17 -
About 95% of what I know of CS is self taught.
This shouldn't be happening, or at least not this much.8 -
Citizens are advised not to use encryption as decrypting data takes too much time and is costly.
Please spread awareness and save money.
Thank you for Cooperating, have a nice day :)6 -
There's not much worse than trying to fix your CSS for half an hour, only to realise that it's a cache issue...9
-
I've just reached 1000++. It's not much and it's taken me almost 1 year but it's still a pretty nice milestone in my book :)6

Best part of being a dev :
You get to live the stereotype. "She doesn't talk much, she is always on her laptop - coding, always has headphones on. Too much of a geek. Let's not invite her to a party. "
No awkward "Uh , I cant come. " Yay! B-)2 -
Not ++’ing a rant because double tapping / dragging the finger all the way to the side of the screen to the ++ button required too much effort.3

Will do a much-security.nl post with answering sent-in questions this weekend.
Please send them to concerns@much-security.nl 😊
Public GPG key can be found at either:
https://much-security.nl/concerns.a... or https://much-security.nl/concerns.h...
Oh and threats (including death threats) aren't much appreciated. They don't really keep me awake at night but if you're one of the people sending them, it's not much fun 😬)17 -
- Google: Can I track you? You'd get this and that and much more if you allow me to.
- Microsoft: I will track you. Disable half of my settings if you do not want to be tracked.
- FB: I do NOT track you7 -
Make something that not only I but also others find useful, and could outlive me 🙂 there's way too much crap out there currently and I'd like to change that.1

People who think software development is not a creative job are wrong. It is very much similar to other creative jobs. It is logic based creativity.
Ain't it? 😛9 -
Just realized no one in my class knew that Stack Overflow was an actual thing, not just the website. Too much Java I guess :D10
-
Do you agree to this rule given by my company ?
"Employees are not allowed to create any sort of library for any language after or during working hours, whether for personal or company projects. As they might somehow expose companies code to the open-source world."
Personally, I created quite much (not that much) of library , I created for fun, today I was told to delete ALL , so those who use my package , Im sorry :(73 -
I'm a newbie when it comes to programming. The thing I like about devRant is that I'm learning how not to be "that guy" from everyone's complaints.
Here's to devRant teaching us newbs how to not make as much of a mess of things.8 -
!rant at all
My boss might quit. He's apparently tired of the abuse our job entails.
I'm not seeing much "abuse" except from him.6 -
The single most productive thing I've done today was teaching my colleague how to send GIFs over Slack...5
-
Built my first little app and put it on my phone 👶 it's not much and comes mainly from a udemy course, but hey it's a step.9
-
I cleared data from app to restore notifications on my phone... forgot how much the white background hurts.
Was not expecting that4 -
I'm not usually one to spend much time on my phone but I have devRant for 1w now and I spend so much time on it (not to mention all the smiling and giggling some of the posts cause) it caused a colleague to ask it I got a boyfriend... 😅2
-
Customer: The pages x and y are not displayed in the menu of my website.
Me: I've added another menu level. This level wasn't planned. Your pages will now be displayed.
Customer: Do you think I have too much menu levels?
Me (what I want to say): YES. You have too much of EVERYTHING! Too much menu levels, too much useless pages, too much bad formatting, too much different font colors in one fucking sentence! Your website is crap at all.
Me (what I said): No, it's okay.
I hate customers.2 -
"we use machine learning to ..."
Ffs you're interviewing a developer, not pitching to a investor. We know how much machine learning you use.7 -
Anyone else have to deal with an asshole who refuses to use the git repo? Not sure how much longer I can hold onto my sanity.9
-
Check out Gotify! (if you want, of course)
I'm not involved in the project but it's pretty much a self hosted and fully open source pushover alternative which is NOT dependent on Google services.
Going to try it out tonight :D7 -
This was a picture I found from about a couple years ago. My aunt got me the shirt for my birthday.
much frustration
ver not wow.1 -
I learnt to navigate in Vim 🤩.
Ik it's not much. But had heard so much about Vim and Emacs (tho still don't know why are they so popular, or how to use them), but I kept my distance after the first time I could not quit the application.26 -
The worst part about having a job that is not related to programming is that I don't have as much time to code as I would like to :(5
-
Meet my new toy, Centos7 as of this afternoon (once I get the usb burned and installation done)
She's not much to look at, but she's mine.10 -
Some years ago I was in cyber security in the military being shown some new tech for our use. Was challenged to try and get past it after being explained it's basics. Took me one long line in Linux about 10 seconds.
Anomaly detection firewall with machine learning seemed like a good idea.
Setting it to aggressive response and then change the package header to the firewall's own address however made it kill itself.
We didn't deploy that firewall that I know of.5 -
After being in China for one week,I realized how much I actually use Google during the day.don't know how they do this but even using a VPN is not a solution most of the times :-? At least devRant is not blocked here;)13
-
Alright! so it's not much but my game engine is slowly gaining actually useful features, just finished implementing a basic sprite class that now renders basic sprites!
It may not be much but kind of proud at how well I have been able to just pick up Vala from scratch and start building something!12 -
> Best part about working from home?
"People don't give me as much shit for having a wank during standups" - not me, but I wish it was7 -
Working on a script that shows weather in a notification because why the hell not.
[edit] such compression much wow, thanks devrant7 -
Dear, google chrome browser. Please stop taking up so much RAM. You are a browser not a game. Worst browser ever.13
-
How clients tend to not understand how much work developing a "simple" or "small" feature can be.
Hey add live chat, that's easy right?2 -
As lead developer I was not allowed to implement automated testing as "we don't have time for that" - you have no idea how much time it would save!6

Hit over 300 downloads on NPM! Not much, but it feels good and makes working on open source projects all the more worth it.2

Java: Cannot convert int to Boolean.
Me: Wait what?.. Ohhh *cries*
I've had too much Vitamin C / C++..
Not used to computer liking me and not letting me shot my head of.. I love you too, Java ..3 -
I contributed to my first open source project on GitHub. It is so much better and fun to do. Why have I not been doing this since 🤔😊😁

To her friend: "I downloaded myself a lot more RAM last night, my laptop is so much faster!"
...
No, person on the bus, you did not download extra RAM. Sorry.4 -
Gradle taking too much time to finish?
No problem I make it show me its status at the bottom of each website I visit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
Sometimes am really pissed off with stack overflow, it won't let you comment if you have less points.
Its like yeah, you can make an answer with every stupid shit possible but no, you can't comment or get any good author's attention, he might be meditating -_-6 -

Apparently I'm not dishonest enough about my mistakes owing up to my mistakes too much when interacting customers. Fuck me for being honest, I guess?3

If your cookie preference setting doesn't include triple chocolate then it's not much of a cookie preference setting3

A chick asked how much I earn, and I politely declined to answer.
She seemed annoyed and insisted, nudging me by saying how much she earns.
Again I told her I'd rather not say.
She got mad, started trying to emotionally blackmail me into telling her my salary...
This must be a red flag cuz I don't give two fucks about how much money people I date earn/have and expect them to either respect or share my view9 -
My colleague does not use git (well, not for much), hates all external frameworks, and when he sees my code he tells me "that's not how I would have done this", every single goddamn time. Aaand we are the only two developers in our company.4

Funny how human brains are never satisfied.
Not much to be done at work today? My job is unproductive and I am wasting my time.
Too much work? You think you fucking own me, bitches!!1 -
frameworks are great and all but it gets much harder to google stuff. a lot of people use php, not that many use cake7
-
The performance is based on how much code you wrote that day.
Not mine though, i heard/read it from somewhere else.
But that’s fucked up, right?19 -
Not sure if this counts as a dev skill but
Not needing sleep anymore.
Imagine how much time you had if you didn't need to waste several hours a day just sleeping4 -
Not a rant!
But I had to share that I just got my first job in IT while being a first year Software Engineer student! Being a webmaster at a store that operates on campus! Not much, but it's something!1 -
When you spend so much time using PHP that you start naming variables with $ in other languages without releasing.
bool $haha = true;
if (haha) ...
haha is not defined.3 -
8, simply because I'm not payed for extra 😁 and neither I'm gonna accept if proposed with payment, I'm not that much greedy about money and I prefer way more the work-life balance1

Boss: "how is the project going? When will you be finished? It's not that much to do right?"
Me - I'm stuck in my spaghetti. Not even started to implement things - fuck3 -
Been developing a Java app for 3 months, including basically everything from aop to rest services.
Meeting with po:
Me: So, guess how many loc I wrote.
Po: 400?
Me: *laughs* I'll get to 10.000 this week.

Worst part about being a visual designer?
Looking at anything that's a pixel too much to left/right/top/bottom and not being able to UN-see it6 -
I'm not qualified to say anything here, I'm a junior as well, but something general that I picked up:
Not everything needs to be object oriented.
Writing 5 functions and calling it a day is often much better than needing 13 classes and 4 interfaces.5 -
I sing in an acapella group
But not just any acapella group...
An all-male acapella group
Not much nerdier than that, I'd say.13 -

Google should not have this much control over the damn browser market. I wish Mozilla were more powerful.37
-
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
Dear recruiter,
Open space is not a perk.
If someone tells you they want remote, not bit of remote or any other indication,
Why would you ask how much remote is ok?
If someone tells you "i want open space" would you ask "how much open space? Like half office?" No, you wouldn't.
But for sure, what is not acceptable when someone tells you they want remote is answering "that's a shame" if you want to get a developer a job, work, if you want to get cash because of a developer then do that. -
2 birds, 1 stone...
Thanks @dfox for the awesome and much anticipated stickers. Still not decided where they're going, but probably on my MacBook Pro.
Here's my humble setup, @localhost3 -
so i gave in and started learning JavaScript, its not as bad as i thought, really prefer the es6 stuff, makes some things so much simpler.4

Devs: Early birds or night owls?
Me: Definitelly night owl, can not wake up before 10 and sometimes working till morning. I know it is bad for health but I can not help myself. Being much more creative and productive at night.12 -
Thought;
Why is there not much support behind the open and free CA "CACert" that has been around much longer then Let's Encrypt?9 -
The one thing they do not say about low-code tools is how much code you have to write when their undocumented garbage doesn't fucking work.

Never be a perfectionist. I am one and it kills me inside. 99% of the time I am not happy with what I did because I know I can do better. Especially on exams. Not because of the grade but because I am not on par with what I know I can do. Its pissing me of so fucking much. Fucking bullshit. Why do I suck so fuckibg much ffs. For real: you should never become a perfectionist because I see what it does to me4

Next year we start web developing in school. Everybody seems to despise it, but since I do not have much experience: Is it really that terrible developing for the www?15

its not imposter syndrome
i've got over 6 years in industry and i still hardly have a fucking clue what im doing or a proper foundation
not like school covered much if anything relevant to industry anyway

I wanted to write: useFetchData
I ended up writing: useFartData
not much of a difference just different wording 🤷🏻2 -
It's not such a good way to disconnect from work to hang out with friends, drink too much, and start coding Python in the sand of a park.1

So apple might finnaly offer a MacBook air revision that is under $1000 USD this year... Let's hope it's not too much in Australia and a MacBook air might not be so fucking pointless now!12

After creating my own PHP MVC framework with Twig as templating engine, everything is now so simple and so fast, I juat cant belive how much I understand now. The development is just so smooth, you know exactly what to do all the time... And for my simple project, it does not even hurt that much to use PHP (and its even strictly typed 7.2, so not that bad). I think that I am in love. ❤6

An incomplete list of 2018 personal dev goals:
* do more web development (It's fun. In a crude way.)
* finish the smart lamp I started building in 2016 ...
* fix up more electronic devices while learning their inner workings
* learn Python and some other language
* get myself a blog again
* get that testautomation thing which is haunting me in my dreams already to production
* be more relaxed
* do some home automation while not cursing all that much -
Took about 67 hours to do homework task and still not got the job offer. And they kept asking few times when I will send the task, because they saw me as very likely me fitting, so I thought there is high chance to get and was motivated to do the homework.
Of course that much time took because I did not know technologies, it would be much less if I knew tech.
But at least learned new tech.13 -
That Awesome moment when u cross 1000 rep in Stack overflow SO !😊

Q: Your biggest dev career dream?
A: To finish my thesis, get a job, where I can peacefully code. And to earn enough money (does not mean rich) to just live a comfortable live without worrying about money too much.
Am I asking for too much?

There's an angular project at work.
I guess they know about as much about angular as I do (not much)
Because the error page isn't working, so when you get an error, you infinite loop and DDoS yourself.
It actually crashes my (admittedly subpart) desktop.
Guess I'll be learning how to fix that.19 -

Thought after spending more than two days after a VBA non-sense flaw:
People that say that VBA is not that bad simply don’t have that much experience in VBA. -
For me is the same Friday than Monday. I do not know if it is good or bad. Maybe it is good because I do not hate my job or bad because I do not make so much fun on weekends. 😗😗

After 4 years of being cautious not to stir the waters it happened again. There was much gratefulness. Then there was much hate. Yesterday I accidentally replaced 17 people department with 3 scripts.9

Overall not much, but I think I would have moved on faster and harder. Definitely spent a bit too much time on a salary that was well below market rate just because I was overly-cautious about moving.

Not much of a rant, just laughing at myself. Typed in docker run android instead of cordova run android and sat there waiting for a minute or 2 😂

How to relax when you need to do so much context switching, many meetings and then your own work?
My breaks are not enough for recharging me.4 -
Just completed a 24 hour hackathon at my school in which the 'best software' winner purely had mock ups of yet another mobile app and had no proof of concept. Meanwhile my team developed a scaling platform online that adapts to groups of user's trends to create optimal results.
I guess I keep misreading the definition of 'software' in the dictionary each morning. (RULE #8.2 - Software Engineers shall read the definition of the following phrases each morning excluding Saturday: software, heap, ego, scrum, algorithm, the documentation of C)4 -
How likely would WIX kill our jobs? Was there a major effect for us on their existence or not that much at all?2

Sure, clear the DB every day... Makes testing so much easier zomgs!

Not using my period of unemployment to really delve into freelancing. It's much harder to do on the side. But I lacked knowledge and experience back then.

Was at an Angular talk at the Microsoft Center in Munich. The talkers bashed MS way to much. Even for a Linux lover like me.
I wanted to her something about Angular and not how much you hate MS!!!!7 -
Long live Ruby on Rails! It's so great once once you actually get what's happening. It's not "too much magic"if you understand what's happening under the hood9
-
It is quite disappointing when some developers only rely on using libraries / dependencies(or whatever you call it) rather than do it manually. I know it can make the work faster but still using too much libraries will make it worst. It’s not bad using libraries, but if you use too much libraries it doesn’t degrade the performance of the app ( too much memory space when you only need that certain action and you include the whole library) but when the library becomes deprecated and no updates that might cause a problem.
It’s not bad using libraries, but not too much.2 -
I love keybase! Great application but not many of my friends and coworkers use it so have not that much usecase for it.😥

@dfox devRant search seems a tad iffy - if I search for "wk19" I see results for pretty much every weekly rant, not just wk19 ones.3
-
Write a novel about code and digitalization - not so much dev'ish.
Rral dev thing: finish reading SICP and really plunge in one of the functional languages2 -
During snowstorm yesterday in New York City, not even half of the developers showed up.
I wasn't able to get much work done.
Curse you mother nature!3 -

Imagine your company would spend 100$ more per employee to rent a bigger, nicer office. Imagine how much additional space you'd have there. Maybe individual offices for everybody, or at least not more than two or three employees per office? Telephone booths for long calls, or a library to work in absolute silence, to do research, or to study something new there.
How would that affect your productivity and overall happiness? How much better you'd feel there? How much more relaxed would you be? How much less sick days would you have, and how much money would your company save resp. make more due to higher productivity?
Or would you rather have a salary raise of 100$?3 -
Well, not that much but precautions has been increased which got impact on host connections, I guess : X
Getting error while authentication, host is always closing connection during handshake :) -

I'm learning python and I feel more and more like it!
I either have too much space, or not enough. And this is screwing my chance to pick up tabs... -

Could someone point out how much a React developer can make per week in Indian? Let’s say within 3 years experience. Longer than that seems not very realistic 🤔5

Gaming! Even though I am not a hardcore gamer, I spend so much time on multiplayer games. Mostly, PVZ Garden Warfare 2.

(How much do you earn ?)1 -
Do you know where to get Windows App Signing Keys for a reasonable price?
The cheapest ones I've found were still ~€150 per year, too much for a proof-of-concept :( Not signing the app is not an option...12 -

Work load, bug fixes, plenty of errors, back and neck pain and eye strain does not irritate me as much as HRs not responding to your emails.
-
There's so much money in technology right now and so much easy success ... and so much poor quality code that is good enough ... that people can not only "function" in rolls they aren't qualified for ... but can excel and even be promoted through the ranks without ever becoming actually functional.
-
Kibana. Fuck you very much for not letting me enter my search term without reloading the page a gazillion times and throwing away everything I entered. 😡💩

Not sure why people love mechanical keyboards so much? Maybe they aren't old enough to remember the first time they were cool!
The world has moved on! :)1 -
I'll go with something not mentioned.
"Git for Windows"
Makes git on Windows so much better. One of those things I use daily but almost never reflect on -
So much dead code. Things that are not used anymore. Things that are expected to work, but don’t because of website redesign. Does it need to be fixed if no one reports it broken? Just so much dead code.💀1

The fuck symfony again - passwords migration - no error but does not work. One guy in the comment wrote what fixed - I had wrong configuration. Why it cannot give fucking error when the configuration is wrong. And I did not see even in documentation that I need to do that. I do not know if symfony really deserves so much popularity if it wastes so much time. Checked my tracker - I have spent about 13 hours for symfony upgrade from I think 5.1 to 5.3 and password migration.
