Friend: *deletes something from the internet*
"Thank god, now it's gone forever!"
Me: *Laughs in French*
"Hahahaha!"
Friend: "What?"
Me: "No, I'm pretty sure almost everything you put on the internet stays on the internet."
Friend: "ARE YOU STUPID??! The button says fucking DELETE. What else would it to do? Please use your brain for once."
Me: "You realize that text in the button is just a string right?"
Friend: *Looks confused*
"Stop trying to be such a smartass. Why would it be called 'delete' if it doesn't delete? Your logic make no sense whatsoever."
Me: *Makes quick simple app in order to prove my point*
App has 4 buttons:
-Play Music: Shows a picture of a dog
-Stop Music: Starts playing music video of Never gonna give you up
-Close App: Changes the interface to a random color
-Delete App: Pop up that says "The app has been deleted"
Friend: *Installs and tries the app*
"Dude! Did you even test your app before sending me?? Your buttons are broken as hell. None of them works. They all do things they're not supposed to do. How do you even call yourself a programmer? Sorry dude, nothing personal but this app sucks."
Me: *I need a new friend*
*sigh*22 -
The mobile web version of GitHub is absolute garbage. It's so shitty I don't even get why they bother. It lacks basic features like issue searching and the interface is so dumbed down everything just feels cheap and I always feel like I'm missing out.
All the devs I've talked to say they always just select "show desktop version." I do that too. It works perfectly. It's so fucking annoying. I wish they would just make a real mobile version, that's not missing features, or just default to the desktop app on mobile - works fine and everyone uses it anyway.43 -
Client tests the app and provides feedback ... This sucks! Full of bugs, hard to navigate, nothing works!
1 week later after version 2 client provides new feedback: This rocks! Love it. Easy to use and rock solid!
Changes made: background set to light blue.10 -
This rant has been written from the Signal messaging app and uses a custom Signal 'gateway' (a registered user which is a server in this case) with a PHP api behind it. If this rant appears on devRant, it fucking works!46

Client: Urgent! App is crashing!
Me inside: Wtf, Crashlytics didn’t send me anything, it betrayed me...
Me: What’s wrong?
Client: Some random user sent me email that app is crashing SOMEWHERE(!?)
Me: ................................... no problem, I’m working on it.
*Tomorrow*
Me: Fixed, everything works fine now (didn’t do anything actually)
Client: Great, nice work!
Client never mentioned that “problem “ anymore.

The Android guys at Google take care of the developers and their use case scenarios.
Like when they have to make an app that works on Jupiter.
Or on the Death Star.11 -
Dear websites,
Please stop fucking asking me to install your shitty mobile apps. They do the same thing your site does. I have a browser, and it's a lot better. I don't even visit you every day. But even if I did, and I wanted your crappy app, I'd open the app store and download it by myself. No need to push me.
No need to waste the little screen estate I have with crappy call-to-action sections to download that shit.
Fuck your desire for more information about me. Fuck your narcissistic enjoyment when I have your icon on my fucking home screen.
The truth is, there is a very small number of apps that really need to integrate with a phone to offer better experience.
I feel most of you feel you need to have an app just because everyone else does. And so you could show these little Android and Apple logos on your website or ads. Well, how about you just make sure your site works well on a mobile screen and don't waste your money on a half-baked mobile shit app unless it really offers something worthwhile?
And if you do have a good app and it really does something, ask me just once and fucking respect my choice. Don't just ask me again and again, on every page, with every new session, or I'll just stop visiting.
You're all not that unique, so fuck you!16 -
New phone rom doesn't allow bloatware app removal, even at root level.
Root file manager -> /system/app -> remove whole 'uninstallable app's' whole fucking folder -> reboot -> device still works well.
Problem solved.26 -
Your app works.
You do some changes.
It doesn't work anymore...
You restore the old code.
It still doesn't work... WHY?4 -
pm: our client wants a proprietary pdf compression app.
me: Okay gimme 3 days and some sample PDFs.
pm: they won't supply any sample PDFs because they contain confidential information.
me: okay fine, I'll download some from the interwebs.
** 3 days later **
me: here is the pdf compression app. all done and works with all of about 100 PDFs we tested with.
pm: okay great I'll have the client take a look.
** half and hour later **
pm: the client said that the compression app errors out.
me: okay I'll go look at the server logs to see what's up.
** 10 seconds later **
me: what the shit is a "foxit phantompdf" file.
pm: it's the proprietary pdf format that they are using.
me: oh joy. I'll go try to find some sample files and see if I can fix it.
** 1 hour later, no sample files found **
pm: got anything?
me: *sobs obnoxiously*9 -
Manager: Everyone will be required to switch to Mac in the next couple of months.
Dev: Um, why?
Manager: Macs are more professional and developer focused than windows machines, I read it in an article. Plus they look way nicer.
Dev: Half of the applications we use don’t have a version that works on iOS.
Manager: What? How do you know?
Dev: I have a Mac for occasionally doing some work on the iOS app we support. I ran into that when I was setting it up as a development environment.
Manager: You have a Mac?
Dev: Yes
Manager: Why? How come you don’t use it for development?
Dev: …15 -
Delivered Project to Client (Android App) and forgot to remove a Toast that I used for Debug purposes. "it fucking works!!"5
-
Ah, let me open my half baked personal Android project. Maybe I'll finish it this time.
*opens Android studio*
"You have shitloads of updates. Please download and restart now"
Ok, makes sense. I haven't opened it for a month.
*runs the app*
"CoolApp has crashed"
What the fuck? It was all working before. WTF happened.
*half an hour of online research*
The google play service version is somehow fucked up. So let's fix that.
*App opens*
Yay! Let me login right away!
*Login via google doesn't work*
I didn't even touched the bloody code.
*another half an hour of research. Nothing works*
Fuck this shit.10 -
Decided to try and remove everything google from my phone by using a root app uninstaller since my phone runs the stock rom.
Thought it would break my phone and was preparing for a recovery flash...
I now run a stock rom without anything Google 😍
Even signal works fine with a background websocket connection.
Google, unkindly go fuck yourself.24 -
Open source for the win!
Working on a new awesome project and found an open source android app which does most of what I need. realized that one of its features is very annoying for me so was sitting behind my desk like fuck me.
........ Suddenly remembered that the app was open source.
Cloned the repo, imported into Android studio, rewrote the part (very tiny part, I'm not a Java dev) that needed rewriting and built the app.
Installed it onto my device through adb and bam, works! (Although not ideally yet but I overlooked other features needing adjustment).

Tester - The app has a bug when I try to buy a ticket
Me - okay, what's the bug ?
Tester - it shows an error
Me (trying to not high-five him with a chair in the face) - What's the error message?
Tester - ah nvm it works now!!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Explain the issue you dimwit, don't just say it doesn't fucking work!2 -
Dev gets hold of me, says my service is down in QA. Works if he hits it locally, works via Postman, but via the QA app server it gives a 401.
I’m like, look, if it works everywhere else, there’s something wrong on your side in QA.
He insists, no, I must help him, and begins CCing all the managers telling them this system has been down for days.
So I eventually climb into his system, check the credentials they’re using in the QA environment, and sure enough, the password is wrong.6 -
"Can we build an app that works only in South Africa, for multiple clients, with no WiFi connection, each app contains an entire website and database to use offline, where any changes to one database synchronises every client's app, and also save those changes to our servers?"
These clients are hundreds of miles apart and on the other side of the world.7 -

> IHATEFORALIVING! YOUR CHANGE IS NOT WORKING! EVERYTHING BREAKS!
> 3 hours long debugging session
> We find out a whole bunch of bugs
> Suddenly, everything works
> None of the bugs had ANYTHING to do with my change. In the instances where the app broke, my code wasn't even being called at all.
> My change was literally the one and only working thing

Client : can you add a calling feature to our android app?
Me : Ok.
*** after updating the app ****
Client : what is this **** dialog (calling permission request for android)!
Users are complaining about it and refuse to use the app!!! Don't you know I can get into legal problems with this???
Me :But you just asked for this feature?
Client : I want this feature but remove the dialog.
Me : you can't that's not how google works.
Client : I don't care do something remove the dialog or edit it but keep the feature.
Me : 😑😑😑😑 nvm I'll figure out something.
Ended up with copying the number to the dial screen instead of direct call from the app.7 -
With much help from a friend here (an unofficially related app, so I'm unsure of username here), I successfully dual booted my laptop to Arch Linux.
Tried Debian, but must have missed something, because it tried to format my whole SSD, which isn't good since my work software only works in windows.
Going to be a change, but I'm kind of excited. To the friend who helped me, I appreciate you and how late you stayed up to help me troubleshoot ❤7 -
I'd say Linux but seen that around a lot so I'll go with another favourite:
OsmAnd(+)
It's basically an offline navigation app which works with downloading maps offline and then you can use navigation without Internet (gps though of course).
It's very easy to use, looks okay enough and no fucking tracking at all. I was in Switzerland recently without any service (my friends didn't have service either and their navigation relies on Internet) and this fucker saves us big time.
Not saying that there aren't any other offline navigation apps but this one is awesome imo.28 -
"We're going to need to migrate our database and reformat it so it works with the new app."

So I've been working since the summer on an app that uses NLP to record audio (I was thinking of using it for school classes), transcribe it and summarize it automatically
I've been using it at school and it WORKS
IT WORKS
I've actually put an app that I made to make my homework and sum classes up and IT WORKS8 -
So following from this rant:
https://devrant.io/rants/618679/...
Warning long rant ahead
I resigned and my last day is tomorrow, I've released the app updates a week ago, patched a couple bugs for iOS.
My boss and the idiot who can't open an email on his phone go off to use the app as part of some training thing for the company.
I got a call yesterday saying the Android app has issues and I proceeded to ask my boss what type of phone they have:
"Samsung and Huawei"
I thought okay I need more info "what type of phone..." He responds with wouldn't have a clue....
I can't see the phone, didn't get a screenshot or anything like that but I'm expected to just know what the phone is.
My boss goes on to say yeah it's the app (he is literally the most computer illiterate person I could think of aside from guy who can't open emails on phone, how the fuck do you know that?)
Me: "From all the testing I've done the app works"
Look if you want a more robust error free update hire more than one developer I can't test every single fucking use case to determine the app is 100% bug free, I've tested on at least 10 phones before releasing the update just to be absolutely sure I got everything done and okay I missed something.
So I proceed to get my boss to tell the guy who has the issue I'll sign him up to the testing app to find out the cause and hopefully fix the issue, I setup crashlytics send the email and get a call from my boss saying the guy didn't get the email.
Well okay is it my problem that we have two emails for the same person where one of them is a typo? No it's the guy who asked and wrote down the email instead of actually forwarding a blank email from him to be absolutely sure, I sent the email to both just to be on the safe side.
I swear if he is another idiot who can't open emails on his phone well I can't help him, app works on my phone and the phones at work.
I need a phone where it doesn't work so I can get a solution I know works but if I have to deal with these idiots that can't even check an email how the fuck do I do that?
Sorry about the formatting just needed to get this off my chest before I start work.
Oh and I get asked "so who'll fix the bugs when you're gone" well I can't (in reality I'm not working for free, I'm not traveling 1 1/2 commute time to fix one bug for free, go hire someone you think will love to work for minimum wage and let's see if this guy can do what I did)8 -
Ok google, set an alarm in 20min works great but when you say ok google, cancel my alarm it just says you can do that in the app. I know I can do it in the alarm app, but I am a lazy piece of shit, that's why I asked you to do it!4

I have Java 8 installed on both Windows10 and Ubuntu16
My (basic) app compiles fine in windows with javac, and when put into a jar works perfectly. But when cloned to my Ubuntu, javac fails to compile, and the jar fails to run.undefined i should of gone to law school i'm a failure java build errors is mcdonalds still hireing? what is going on33 -
After 8 iTunes Testflight Beta approvals for my app ... better still, I got hte app approved for the App Store a week ago to "de-risk" our "final submission" ... That's 9 approvals for my app, and we're ready to submit version 1.0.0 and actually release on the store. We take last week approved app and "developer reject" if to make room for the final tweaked version (minor tweaks, minor bugfixes). Submit version 1.0.0., plenty of time before it needs to be released.
But, what's this? "Meta Data rejected" for v1.0.0 because some piece of shit at Apple wants to watch a video of the app working with our hardware. What about the previous 9 approvals with the demo account connected to the demo hardware?
So we send a video within 1 hour of their unexpected request about the very foundational fucntionality of our app. That was 24 hours ago and these fucking assholes haven't even responded, no sign of when they will trouble themselves to respond. Pure limbo.
All the work up to this point was to "de-risk" their infamously shitty review process and all of it was in vain because it's somehow brand new information that our app works with our hardware.
Holy fuck, what a bunch of power-tripping assholes. All I can do is pace around and review the previous 2 months in my head to figure out what I could have done better. But I could not possibly have expected that after all the Testflight Beta approvals and after the recent App Store approval, that they would suddenly doubt that our software actually works with our hardware!!!!!
FUCK YOU APPLE!!!! FUCK YOU WITH ALL MY HEART!!!!!!2 -
So this happened when i was developing the iOS app for the company I work in. I was given half boiled code written by the previous employee to work on. The app was laid around a webview. Now in iOS, there are 2 kind of webviews, the UIWebView that works on all iOS versions, and the WKWebview that works only on iOS 8+.
The app was coded using UIWebview, I brouht that up with my boss, and he asked me to continue using it, even after I repeatedly informed him that the javascript engine of this webview is subpar and we could be better off with WKWebview. Fast forward to 12 weeks later. The application is ready and is given to the boss for testing. He runs the app and plays around for a day. The next day, he comes up to me and says "The javascripts aren't working that well, can we switch to WKWebview instead?" In the inside of my mind, I have already murdered him three times, on his face, however I say, "We can look into it."
So, basically I rewrote the whole app with WKWebView, retargetting the app to iOS 8+.
The app is tested and launched. Everythings fine. AND NOW, he comes up to me and says, "Can we switch it back to UIWebView? We really need the app to be universally available on the app store and 6% of our customers, still use iOS7."
You know how I felt and what I had to do. Goes without saying, that the application is available on the AppStore, targetting iOS 7+.
TLDR, iOS Dev, given half boiled code with UIWebview, tells boss about WKWebview (iOS8+) and advantages. He asks me to continue UIWebView. App developed, 12 weeks. He comes up and points to problems and asks me to retarget with WKWebview. Developed and App launched.
He comes up and says, we need iOS7+, retarget the app to UIWebview. FML.7 -
Hopefully seeing the app that I've been working on for months officially released and on both the App store and google play store.
I say this because I've been waiting months and months for my boss and some other people at this company to be done with the privacy policy + terms of use for the app (which is needed due to how the app works) and I want to resign soon due to minimum wage + 2 hour commute twice daily + want a proper development culture (get treated as the IT guy at work) -
Had my pure PHP web app rejected on a market platform because I didn't use a framework..
BITCH IT WORKS PERFECTLY WITHOUT A FUCKING FRAMEWORK, IF YOU WOULD HAVE TESTED IT YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT!22 -
I fucking hate all these JavaScript frameworks. You try to learn one and then there is another one that's rising up. While you wonder why a framework exists and what's the best use case there is a fresh off college grad who built a fucking app on it. How the fuck is it even possible? Did you study the framework? Did you understand how it works? Or did you just put together a bunch of tutorials and built the app. I feel people just want to churn apps out without bothering about understanding the framework. Ask them about design patterns... They know nothing about it. Ask them vanilla JavaScript questions.... They fumble easily. Ask them OOPs..... They look dumbfounded. WTF!!!
Or maybe I am just getting old. It's possible.9 -
I know people complain about Android Gradle takes so long to build (and I know the reason why, thanks to @DRHAX34) but for me that isn't what I have to wait for.
It's the shitty WiFi at work that causes issues/bugs I'll never experience normally lol
When my app builds I have to also connect to the internet and check for updates against the umbraco server, and it works if it fails to connect (naturally) but our internet somehow manages to stay connected enough to trick the app into doing continuous checks or some form of tiny and long downloads
I've been tempted and sometimes do use my own mobile data which would waste my tiny data (at the time)
Anyways fuck you shiternet lol -
Joined a new company / team to work on an iOS app that has 2 different backend environments "Dev" and "Prod". Also being referred to in iOS speak as "Debug" and "Release".
Been trying to get accounts on these backends (no sign up in app, its controlled via another process). Eventually get access to "Dev" for one of the regions, so I load up "Debug" and its not working.
This is odd, so I open the Android app and load "Dev" and it works? I then Notice Android has "Dev", "QA", "Staging" and "Prod" for every region where as iOS only has 2 of these.
So I go back to iOS and find the file for the settings and it has iOS Debug assigned a variable for the backend Dev ... which is actually pointing to QA. Because they use QA to Debug and not Dev.
... confused? join the club4 -
I was building my iOS app in xcode, when I get an error. It was some swift library thing I did not recognize.
Then without changing anything:
Build again.
Error
Build again.
Error
Build again
No errors at all. Run my app and everything works perfectly.6 -
I've run into problems with the app I'm working on, the problems are related to issues regarding code.
No in fact it's related the last guy who wrote the app, the code has no comments and the variable names make no sense, the only comments in the code are blocks of code... With no reason as to why it was commented.
I have to add in some checks to determine if a person that has logged in is a full member or not (full member has access to the feature I've added) and the way the guy has made this app works makes no sense to me at all.
I've tried my best to avoid all contact with his code because it makes me want to yell out in frustration.
But for this one case I have to work with what's there.
I know I've mentioned this before but I've hit my limit yet again.
And for those who don't know this guy managed to scrape together skeleton code from two apps to make part of this app, rather than using parts of the other apps he left out code that was specifically made for the other apps, (majority of the commented out code).
One app was a taxi app and from the looks of it the feature he used was to get GPS location (which I don't understand before Google maps is a think after all... The taxi app USES Google maps), the other app is some sort of funeral webcasting app (I found code imports for it, without any actual code).
I don't actual understand how this guy could put this together without not thinking "maybe this is a bad idea"
Always code as if the person who ends up maintaining your code is a violent psychopath who knows where you live
I'm that psychopath right now..... Fuck that guy (don't know where he lives though)1 -
First (working) attempts at writing a proxy that rewrites live requests from the devrant app, right now it only rewrites all notifications to be unread
Though the first attempt that finally works is built with mitmproxy and it's add-on scripting, plan is to get that stuff work with e.g. goproxy instead37 -
Tested out my first app and it worked beautifully. I’m a projectionist and I made this to give me a constant visual feed of projector communication connection. Still in development, not ready for deployment yet. But it works!
I’m posting here because although this site did not help me technically, it definitely helped me emotionally. ;)6 -
When you develop and test your (Android) app on lower end devices, thinking that if it works on low end devices, it will work on higher end devices too.
And you get crash reports from the higher end (huh! Flagship grade) devices only.3 -
Today a potential client contacted me after seeing my works and said they were really interested in having me work on their project. Then, they demanded that I scheduled a call with them, using their calendar app. I did, just to them cancel it a few hours later. Without any explanation.
Deal with people is so discouraging sometimes.2 -
Boss, yesterday: hey, we just got you a Windows 10 machine. Test the app and make sure it works.
Me: kay. (Fast forward20 minutes) I found a hell of a bug.
Boss: what?
Me: the SA disabled scripts on the machine so I can't build.
Boss: Are you serious?
Me: yeah, and he's out until January.6 -
2 things I can not understand.
1)how my programming works.
2)what the fuck this new update of what's app about??? A status? fuck!
Worst update ever. Fuck I can not handle videos and photos of people who sends useless messages. Fuck!! 😫😫😫😫6 -
Confession
I'm building a web app with little experience and I'm probably Googling stuff 50% of the time and I'm sure I'm doing everything the wrong way but it works so...10 -
Client tests app 100000 times, app works fine
Client tests app once, app doesn't work
Client sends email to everyone,
"Hey, @CodesNotHot, this app is not working at all! Can you please look at it right now!! This is URGENT!"
I test the app, it's working fine.
I just want to high five someone with a machete on the face right now.2 -
colleague: AWS is facing some network issue.
me: But I see you are able to SSH into EC2 instances.
colleague: Well, I am running my nodejs app on 8080 but can't access it over the Internet. Works fine on my laptop though.
me: ec2_prod ~# netstat | grep node
lolol -> 127.0.0.1:8080 node
Turns out it was running on localhost IP. Worked fine on his laptop though.3 -
WOOOO!!!!! I BUILT MY FIRST FULLY FUNCTIONAL REACT NATIVE APP! Including the release apk that needs to be signed. Took an entire day and more like an advanced HelloWorld.
But the core functionality works... Though not pretty...3 -
Me: develops my first android app with firebase by google.
Me: finishes app, tests it and it works.
Firebase after 3 months: we were first going to scale our servers on our own based on how many people are simultaneously using your app. But now fuck you, we will have a cap of 100000 simultaneous users.
Me: fuck this kills my app if it scales. Have to Shard everything on the db side and overhaul the entire app to work will multiple db instances. Takes a month.
Android after 6 months: dude your app is working fine without any hiccups. Let me fuck it up. We will stop all your services when your app is not running or backgrounded. Also we will make it illegal to start services in this case and we will throw exceptions.
Me: what the actual fuck. They now want me to focus on a JobScheduler, fine... But now even intent services won't work properly. So use a job scheduler to start a JobIntentService which is essentially another job scheduler for queuing. wtf android.
Ps solved it and works again.
PS: WAITING FOR ANDROID TO FML WITH ANOTHER NEW VERSION. Maybe they'll say you can't run your app at all now4 -
Can't believe this, my boss was pushing me to deploy the new mobile app version and now that its done he is traveling and didn't migrate the data that the app needs to works....2
-
So apparently there was a prod issue all day today because some server app couldn't start up.
The error was caused by missing Params...
And seems everyone that got asked to look at it are pretty clueless.
I looked at the text msgs now cuz my phone wouldn't stop vibrating from notifs (yes it got that bad) and I'm thinking, of all the ppl you guys could've asked, no one reached out to me... Who well knows exactly it works, and how to fix it.
But the issue with the team is everyone works on everything but most people have no idea how the apps actually work...
Jack of all trades, master of none...
Anyways, sitting on the sidelines watching the chaos ain't too bad either....1 -

Bought an ebook that turned out to be a .DRM file
...that only worked with that publisher's Android app
......that only works with Android versions < 6.0 (I use Android 9)
Tried it anyway, which among incompatibility issues, was raising a certificate error. I contacted the publisher about it
..."sorry, the author did not give us permission to sell this. You can have your money back"
What
Why are you even advertising it on your website as a publisher then??7 -
I fucking love Python
It just works :)

Even faster than Twitter takes for approving an app.
im waiting now 1 week...6 -

>be my team
>developing a mobile app
>I'm responsible for developing a "RESTful" API to interface communications between the app and the database
>there's also an "admin" web application which the client themselves will use to manage some shit in the database
>I've developed the API, it works with the mobile app
>instead of just making it simply a front-end app that makes requests to the API like the mobile app does, the guy responsible for the admin app completely ignores my API and implements his own with a certain messy dollar symbol language and a certain bloated piece of server software, accessing the same database directly, and does some operations in his own special way that will break what I've implemented
>now data inserted via admin app is inaccessible to the server API, and I'm expected to "fix" my code so it's consistent with this guy's shit, but the only way to do it is introducing interdependency between the actual API and the admin app's back end
Fuck my life, now I'm the one responsible for the app being broken because no way the guy who's used to kludging unmaintainable shit together fast would ever fuck anything up2 -
(biggest facepalm moment)
So this happened...
We were suppose to submit a project in the name of app development.
Being our first app, it was a simple Android app having simple features which any e-commerce app would have.
On the day of evaluation, we handed our mobile (which already had our app) to our evaluator, to have a feel of our app.
After few swipes here and there, the evaluator said this,(which blew our mind)...
Don't be so smart,... Here take my IPhone and run your app on it! I want to see if it works on my IPhone like it does on yours or not.
The next thing our group was doing was to look at each other's face,.. completely stunned what to say next!
(If confused, read tags...) :/3 -
I've legit just spent the past few days CRYING to get my react native app to compile on iOs using the xcodebuild command so that I can use a cloud build service (VS App Center). It works fine with XCode 'play' button but not through the command line. About to give up. Literally Googled 'fuck xcode' and found this, thank you guys, you made today a bit less dreary than what i was going to be. Reading through the posts actually made me laugh out loud.3

One thing every junior web developer learns is how to implement a login system.
They may not make it the most secure, but it works.
It boggles my mind how Microsoft still don't know how to make a login that works consistently.
Every Microsoft login page requires like 30 redirections to work.
The Teams app on my PC fails to login at least once a week, just because another Microsoft app is logged in using the same account (usually office), but Windows is not.
Microsoft needs to take it's head out of it's ass and BEG Google to teach them how to make a decent login system.4 -
I just love how liferay keeps finding ways to surprise me...
Customer: need to fix this security issue
me: ok
me: fixed. Testing locally. Works 100%.
Me: testing on dev server. Works 100%
qa: testing on dev server. Works 100%
me: all good. Deploying to preprod
customer: it doesn't work
me: testing preprod - it doesn't work.
Me: scp whole app to local machine. App works 100%.
Me: preview loaded liferay properties in preprod via liferay adm panel. All props loaded ok.
Me: attach jdb to preprod's liferay to see what props are loaded. Only defaults are used [custom props not loaded according to jdb]
me: is there some quantum mechanics involved..? Liferay managed to both load and not to load props at the same time and the state only changes as it's observed...2 -
Hosting a PHP/MySQL application for a really wealthy NGO that must have paid thousands of dollars for the app, and everything works fine but no sanitised inputs and direct SQL statement execution. Just waiting for little Bobby Tables so I can charge them a fortune for recovery 😊5

Just wanted to spread awareness about a Windows 10 devRant app called "devRant Unofficial". It's literally a 1:1 clone of the Android and iOS apps.
Maybe the devRant team could contact the dev for come co-operation and get an official app for Windows 10 with little to none effort?
It works on mobile and PC so I can easily use it on my Lumia and Surface. I know most of you guys here use macOS, but for us Windows devs, having an official app would be cool.
I know Valve talked to an unofficial developer of the Steam app for Windows Phone, and gave him approval for removing the "unofficial" tag. I suggest you guys do the same.
Happy 2016's death everyone, and sorry for the long and boring post!13 -
Why the fuck does Apple hate developers so much? I just want to test and play around a bit. Why do I have to own a fucking Mac? Why do I need to pay 99$ a year just to install a debug build on my own device?! It's literally impossible to get into ios development without being rich or having some kind of plan for revenue...
Testing my app on Android:
Install Android studio -> plug in phone -> run code in Android Studio or simply install the resulting apk on your phone.
Trying to test my app on my iPad:
Google how to build app for iPad -> reading that you have to own a Mac to run xcode when you want to build Code for iOS -> searching for a workaround -> find a way to build my app online -> setting the tool and building it -> Trying out 5 different tools to sideload the app, no one works -> finding out that you need a developer account to sign the app for testing purposes on MY OWN DEVICE. I really would appreciate it if I would be able to install personal stuff for testing and LEARNING without being forced into insolvency. Why are people putting up with this kind of bullshit?18 -
This Android app is my coolest project because I did it on my own and it actually works! Well, my 3 and 5 year old sons think it's the coolest, anyway :)

I use this timer app... probably more than most people (for food). It works fine and looks nice but the undismissable warning message is a real eyesore. Why not just let me dismiss the message.... why...2

While building a Java net sniffer app, I finally write the code to run a Linux binary in a separate process after three days. It works perfectly!
Then I export my app to a runnable jar file.
About nine exceptions are thrown, including a security exception. So much for being done. 😐5 -
Had a blast from the past the other day. Testing an issue with an AngularJS app in IE11 on a project managers Surface.
Nothing works. Just a blank screen. I open the JavaScript console to hundreds, maybe thousands of errors. They all seem eerily familiar, but I can't place them. It's like something from a past life.
Then I see one that brings the issue into sharp focus.
"{{variable_name}} is a reserved word"
No it isn't, I think. That hasn't been a reserved word in JavaScript since...
Me: "Is your browser in Compatibility Mode?"
PM: "Yeah, it's for one of our legacy programs"
Me: "You need to turn that off to test this app. It thinks you're using IE6, so it's having a 2 decade old shit-fit. I haven't seen those errors since I was a teenager making crap on Geocities"
I never thought an error message could make me feel so old 😩 -
Only if people understood the amount of effort that goes behind building a simple app.
Even if it's a simple notes app, I've to design the UI (at least 2 different activities - 1 for the list and the other for editing notes), write the code which makes it run i.e. without which the app is just a piece of empty design, think about what data
structures to use (that notes you are saving need to be stored somehow) and then club everything together and hope nothing breaks (spoiler alert: something will definitely break).
People need to understand that it's not just putting some fancy buttons and boxes around. Also, I'm not just making the app for one device. I've to make sure it works on different screen sizes, different versions of the OS (a user can't imagine how many functions need to be re written because something got deprecated in the process and I'd to switch to something different).
Also I'm not just sitting at my computer and converting coffee to code. I've to think about the flow, structure, design, navigation, backend etc. Of the app; most of my time isn't spent writing code but thinking/studying how to write the code. I also need to wait while the project is compiling/building every time I want to test it.
A function which you think is hard to implement night be really easy while something you claim is easy might be a nightmare. Oh and I didn't even mention how I need to stick to some design guidelines to make the app look consistent with the rest of the OS.
If you're wondering why a developer is spending most of his time on a browser, he isn't playing internet games or browsing reddit ( at least you better hope not), he's probably looking at the docs/stack overflow to get something to work/fix something!
Wow! That was long. Thanks!3 -
APPLE IM GONNA BURN YOU WITH GASOLINE.
So i want to send my build to app store, from my iphone.
I want to log into iTunesConnect.
"It just works"
Yeah, right. Login page for itunesconnect does not render correctly on Safari web browser, on iphone, login arrow is not visible, and elements are scattered around.
Grrrrrrr.
On Google Chrome, it looks okay!!!!!!!!!!!
Spartaaaaaaaaaa.
After some tapping on screen, and rotating the device, i somehow found invisible arrow and managed to sign in.
BUT. Once inside i was unable to complete the process because UI refuses to scroll down :(
The pain...14 -
Shit man if I thought that S.O for developers was bad.....Stack Exchange Mathematics is just fucking brutal omg I am loling so bad man these dudes have 0 patience and will legit kill trolls on spot.
Saw a dude not agreeing with implicit meanings behind certain symbolic notations, some other dude disagreed, fight ensured.
This shit is awesome. Ima stick with this shit for a while.
S.O still fucking sucks though. The stack is amazing and the app works fantastic. The people there are shitty beyond belief.
"Well, you probably said that beca...." fuck off3 -
So a few weeks ago I wiped my MacBook Pro to regain some space and speed, it wasn't really that slow I just had the disk partitioned into two installments of MacOS. When I erased the disk I thought the secure thing to do would be to set the format to journaled, encrypted rather than just journaled. Everything was working fine, there seemed to be this weird step of login when I restarted but whatever, except iCloud Drive. On my iMac it works fine but for whatever reason my MacBook Pro doesn't want to download custom folders (ones that aren't created by an app and don't have an app icon on folder icon) from my account despite them being clearly available in iCloud.com. So after this much time of messing with it I'm wiping my MacBook Pro again and formatting it as journaled (not encrypted). Wish me luck...undefined this must just be a bug or a security feature... probs a bug tho i still like apple products this stuff usually works for me3

Am I the only one that down votes reviews for an app just because the review is from someone who's incompetent?
For example: major new release, so of course there's going to be bugs. Person 1 stars and bitches about how great the old version was.
Like ok you incompetent fuck, that's not at all how this shit works.3 -
An uncle of mine, owns an NFT/Betting startup (early 30s, so no veteran and no doesn't know much coding).
Got 3-4m USD as investments.
It's an utter garbage "app" that he knows will die in an year, and he's drawing big salary and buying properties from the funding until he has the "runway" of funds remaining while app/company works in the background
What bugs me isn't that he's feasting on some random investors' petty change, but that such "ideas" get money thrown at them while ive seen 100s of more fun ideas/apps back in uni-days that died in obscurity when people graduated and retired them as projects, being talked about in 1 liner in their CVs.
This world ain't right :v4 -
I am a Windows person. I always argue how great it is.
Well, not today.
I was today years old when I learned that you CANNOT uninstall store app via store ;p You need to go to settings / apps and functionality / your app / uninstall
The photo app (Yes the one bundled with win10) doesn't work if you use Hard drive compression AND it is a symlink for OneDrive (So you don't need to keep all photos on the drive). Fucking Paint works without problems.
Email client : If you alt+tab too fast after hitting 'Send email", there is 50% chances that email won't be send. Basiclly you need to hit "send" and wait until you see it in "sent" folder.
Well, as i'm ranting, here for Linux too :
I have a small ubuntu server VM, worked very well for last 6 months. Now "System in read only mode". Fucking apt-get upgrade fucked with something. I don't want to look, so I'll just rebuild a fresh vm.
And macOS should take sometyhing too : Who the fuck decided "enter" is for editing the name of file ?! really !
Well, ALL os are shit, all have downsides, I need my own OS. But I still want AA games... So windows for me.25 -
i submitted my first app to the app store yesterday. i built it with flutter, and it's already on the play store.
for some reason - i probably created the app wrong - the app store connect/portal needed screenshots of my app running on an ipad pro. now i don't have an ipad pro, and i can't use an emulator because i don't have a mac for that matter (i have been using codemagic.io for builds). i called friends - they don't have any ipads.
what did i do?
i turned my phone sideways and scaled it to the ipad pro resolution.
it is currently "in review"
🙏let's hope this works8 -
Today my boss decided to sit in the same table that his team works (me included) he said that he will take a call and apologized in advance because he will "rant". I didn't get it until I Google it and found the name meaning of this app.
-
Nothing interesting. Just 11 GB ram using and increases steadily. After restart app the bug was again. Okaaay, I thought. I reboot my PC, but bug was adamant. Well, then I update phpStorm and everything became fine. Ok, JetBrains, good idea to say user about new release version and make update:) Seriously, it works fine. I think every company should adopt this idea:)8

Idk if I'm happier about the usability of the app or the image notifications with the not-yet-crashed background activity or the super cute anime wallpapers but the thing works and looks pretty xD what else could you want from a minor side project :')4

Developing a web app that I'm sure was touched by Satan himself. Bugs come out from no where.
Yesterday when I left everything worked. Today when I arrived nothing works! Lots of angular errors. WTF. No one else worked on it . :O4 -
"Come on, please try a bit harder. Why don't the IT students make an app to sell local goods online or something? Even I, without knowing anything about tech, consider this to be easy".
Wise words from a non tech substitute teacher I once had the honor of studying under. When he checked everyone's 1 month project proposals, he expressed his disappointment.
I wonder if he works in management now.1 -
I am making an LDAP user manager and porting application for my workplace.
The thing is, i made the first version of it in PHP already. Shit works fine and it without an issue.
But
I had an itch to redesign it using another tech stack that would be speedier, more tested and using a more established platform.
Enter Clojure, a Lisp dialect for the JVM. In a single day I managed to get 80% of the application done. We have about 80k users inside of our ldap system(maybe more) and I tested it with 150 accounts, so far so good.
If this works I will be the first person to deploy a Clojure application, not only for my organization, but for the city as a whole while simultaneously being able to say that I got a Lisp app deployed and working :D
I am loving this. Really wanna have a Lisp app out there and add it to my resume.
The head of my department, an old timer and really ancient dev smiled heavily when I showed him the codebase. Not only is it minimal, it is concise and elegant :D
I love Clojure

It's nice when a great new idea you have is fairly easy to implement and works well.
My latest idea involves running my discord bot, written in nodejs off of my phone using a terminal app (that doesn't require rooting my phone).
Once I got a branch of the project with no voice support, I wrote a bash script in vim on my phone (an odd experience, I assure you) and ran it.
Things have been working well, far better than trying to use PhoneGap to build something that would run it.
All in all, I'm pretty satisfied, and it was a fun and relatively painless project! (thankfully)10 -
I really need to kick Tim Cook in the ass.
“Everything Works”, yeah tell that to your dead dog.
Debugging watchos experience:
I need to uninstall main app for watch app to register changes in code.
Xcode crashes during debugging.
Cannot SET custom keys in Info.plist, in watch target, ohhhh goood, but thats where app configuration is set, how and why do you care about simple string keys!!! What now i need to send that configuration from main app??
Tim Cook just go die please, you have ruined apple.3 -
Just had to write an old-skool for loop. Index...termination condition...whole works. I feel dirty.
Bit embarrassing as someone saw me writing it, thought I was a hacker and informed the authorities. Spent the last hour being waterboarded.
We had a big laugh about it when they realized I was just fixing bugs in a legacy app.
National Security. Hilarious.10 -
An entire platform was removed from Google Play, and may be removed from other markets too, not for something they did, but because of the POLITICAL ALIGNMENT OF A MAJORITY OF ITS USERS.
"the users are evil" you're right, let's ban Tor, Snapchat, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook, etc. because they've got a metric fuckton of "evil users" too. Oh. Wait. No, that's not how that works, is it?

Ad an Android dev, I hate that hybrid solution like cordova, react native or similar frameworks. Companies sell their apps for ridicolous prices, so every native Android/ios dev need to get it's work faster and for a lower price.
Customers can't understand that hybrid app are faster to create but works worse. I'm hating you, hybrid-guys17 -
Why even is Microsoft Teams?
Why does it suck so bad? Why is it a memory hog? Why does the ELECTRON desktop app not have native ARM64 support neither on Windows nor macOS? Why is it even an Electron app? Why the web version does not work with Safari (then again, barely anything more complex than my portfolio site works on Safari)? Why is the UI from 2016? Why is it preinstalled with Windows 11? Why the pre-installed Windows 11 version is a completely different entity? Why the preinstalled Windows 11 version does not work with school/work version of Teams calls?10 -
Slack's android app crashes if I hold a message to put my emoji reaction on it.
A Microsoft Teams call link needs to be opened in 4-5 tabs only one of which works and actually lets you join the call.
Droidcam's Ubuntu client suddenly stops working even when you're using a wired connection instead of WiFi.
Modern software is in the gutter. Change my mind.4 -
A few years ago my boss held a brainstorming meeting to go over features for an internal reporting app. I brought up we should have related business news stories scroll on the page header like Fox business or something. He laughed and said sure. Two things happened after that.
1. Found out the marquee tag still works in chrome.
2. Yeah you bet I put that shit in there.
Anyways a meeting was held a few days after where my boss chewed me out for actually doing it. He showed the app to his boss and got laughed at by his leadership team when they saw news headlines scroll over analytics graphs.
After writing this I realize this is more his embarrassment than mine. Have a great Tuesday fam.7 -
Backend API developer that doesn't admit his mistakes. Damn, he's annoying the whole team.
Basically crashed the whole app by messing up the settings for the CORS policy, and still doesn't admit it. When he fixed it, the only reply we get was "I erased the thing and put it back and it works".
WOW!5 -
Was on my first internship, told to analyse and prepare stuff for the Android dev to build an application for a big client. Did it before the end of the internship and team was satisfied with my job.
Because the Android dev had already lot of works on other stuff they let me start the development of the app.
The end of my internship is coming, the app is not finished but the team agreed that my work is not bad and that I should continue to work on it.
I finally get hired to finish the app, when we first publish it 95% of the code was mine and the boss started to stress because he let an intern (that became an employee) build the application from the ground. But the application got quickly its 4.5 stars on the playstore and more than 10.000 downloads.
I quit the job a few time after the publication of the app but I feel proud and happy that this team let me work on one of the biggest project they had as I was only an intern without any professional experience.
This is not "badass" but this is my first and best experience in the professional world ! -
Three of us work on an app. I made a mockup interface to develop the functionality, a second person made the designed interfaces and a third made the API. Now the design got included in the app.
I had a conversation with the third person.
He: Do you need a list of what works and what doesn't?
Me: If you have free time...
*2 seconds later*
He: Nothing except login. Have fun!1 -
I feel like an imposter. I am running an IOT startup alone and it's in development phase.
Product and the app ecosystem is working so well that it's scaring me. Other products are quite finicky. I haven't worked long enough. I imagined it would take an year to develop. My code is quite simple. I just don't know why it's working so well compared to the works of others. I am scared I missing something huge.
I am in depression because work is going smoother than my expectations.10 -
University wants a final year major project which should give an output as a research paper published in some conference or journal. All seems great. Department rejected all web app related projects because it's too generic.. Still makes sense..
And then suddenly, department asks where are customer requirements, where is ER diagram, where are Selenium tests??????
And they still expect a research paper to be published....
Why do they don't understand the difference between software development and research works.. !!!!!!1 -
I am so much stunned i cannot form a sentence on what to say. Lost 3 days trying to fix a bug on why socket.io was connecting to backend TWICE per user. I cannot fucking comprehend this. Question: What is the fuckiest fuckup?
A) That it turrned out our apps login does not work on Safari at all? Although Safari should be Webkit and App works fine on Chrome and Firefox for years and should be normal Angular stuff by the way?
B) That in three years appareantly nobody considered trying it out in Safari?
C) That I can not use the iPad I got from my employer because fucking AppleId is requiring a fucking Phone number.
Answer: all of them.10 -
I'm amazed how some people either think I'm fucking jesus or a god or both.
App XY not working.
Yeah. We're talking about how App XY and it's exhaustion of the connection pool since a year....
It's not working, what can we do?
Well. I don't know. Tried restarting?
Not working.
Well... Nothing I can do, you're responsible for developing the app and we've talked many times how complex the problem is.
It's not working, can u do something?
<Me just fed up increasing the connection count>
Well. I've increased the connections.
This will not work. It's a band aid. The app needs really a complete migration.
Ok. But it works.
No it doesn't work.. For fucks sake... It still exhausts the connections for unknown reasons, this is a band aid.
But it works....
-.-
This conversations was over then....
Well. Have fun.
I reverted the change I did.
May this crappy piece of shit die a thousand deaths, I:m now working on something else.
Goodbye mother fucking bitches, habe fun with the nightmare you created.
I'll cry over the other fucking nightmares I at least can solve, cause what you created in this App is beyond irresponsible and dumb.4 -

So, the other day, I was working on a Angular Web app which included the YouTube Api. In the event listener, I wrote that when a video ended, a next one would start (from our database).
Guess what. It didn't work.
Then, I wrote a console.log();
It freaking worked! Then, I removed the console.log. It didn't. I tested cases for like half an hour and it still baffles me, why the hell would an output change everything?

You know what's fucking horrible?
Implementing new features to an Android app in production that another dev wrote...
...which has no architecture, no documentation, no modularity, no testability, everything runs on the UI thread, filled with spaghetti code and it somehow works smoothely so I have to not fuck it up.
Oh and I'm also a junior. So fuck me, right?1 -
So these days (since yesterday), I am using an iPhone. Mom’s phone broke and she wanted an android, and I wanted to fiddle with iPhone... So she took my OnePlus 3 and got me an iPhone 6s.
I like iOS as long as it works.
But... I FREAKING HATE that the App Store has country specific rating. You will only see the ratings/reviews of your countrymen.
Whose frigging brilliant idea was that!!! 😡😡😡
Now I have most apps (like beam and narwhal for reddit) showing as unrated.
M so pissed off at this 😩😩 -
Multi-Screen problem: So I need to run a VR headset with a laptop, and the laptop has only one hdmi connection. I don't have any extra hdmi adapters, so I cannot connect my second screen while working with the headset, which sucks...
but...
then it hit me...
there is an app called spacedesk which allows you to use your phone as an additional screen. I have a docking station for my phone so I can connect hmdi to it. On the first try the resolution was shit since it uses the default phone resolution. But the phone has Samsung Dex, which allows you to run everything full screen on your connected screen, so I can run the app within Samsung Dex and therefore will get full resolution.
And this works. It's kinda stupid and maybe a bit complicated, but it works. God, I love technology :D:D:D
This is the adapter to adapter to adapter to adapter meme in action, just wireless. Lol. I'm proud of this xD5 -
Dev gets told in the morning there's an emergency fix needed due to a critical issue with the app that's in production and that the fix needs to be in the release that will be cut this evening.
Dev drops everything he/she is working on, works frantically all day to get it in 2 minutes before the deadline.
Release gets cut.
Next day release gets trashed because some exec did not like the size of the font used in some obscure part of the app even though it's been this way for 6 months...1 -
F*** u apple. From time to time I develop Apps for Android and iOS and boy is the whole iOS app distribution workflow bad.

The battery of my good old Huawei Y300 is slowly dying. So I thought it was time to cut the battery consumption a little. What a delusion. A new battery costs < $5 btw, but I'm too lazy to order :)
I've tested 16 highly acclaimed (of about 20,000, didn't count all of them) battery apps - they're all!, and I mean all!, total crap. There is not a single app that does what it promises. And all totally fucked up with advertising - including some of the paid apps. Most apps consume more power than they actually save.
The winner of all this shit was the app "Battery Repair", which supposedly repairs broken cells. Well, well.
All that junk should be thrown out of the store. But, no, these crap apps have ratings of 4.5 - 4.8 with millions of downloads. I don't get it.
The only app that actually works is, hard to believe, Kaspersky Battery Saver.
So if someone else wants to "optimize" their battery - forget it, it's not even worth looking for it.8 -
Started further developing an app (that I had left dormant) for retail outlets in my town. Spoken to the managers and they said they like my idea, and want to trial run it and then if it works properly, they want to start having the other branches around the country use it.
Now to sit by ass behind my screen, and finish developing my app (meaning tackling the many bugs that made me pull my hair out last time)2 -
Join's bridge: "hey man, something is wrong with your DB. our app can't connect in any environment, it started after our code release last night"

"Then why am i on an outage bridge? call me if it's still broken after you rollback"1 -

Architect: I've been using this architecture for 20 years now and this works nice since pascal, that's why we are using it in this J2EE app.
This was the justification that I received after hearing that I shouldn't use exceptions, just make the function return a false and add the error message to a embedded message list and make the caller capture it.6 -

Wow. That's a new level of ratings.
Just read ratings like these below an ascii cam app(which works like it should):
"This is just a camera witu a mosaic filter, that's why you can't save the pictures as ascii"
"This is not real ascii because you can't save it as .txt or .html"
I don't think i need to say anything.1 -
OMG OMG OMG!!! IT WORKS!!!
So one feature I have in my app is I can subscribe to a Rant. This means that if the OP ever posts a new comment, I will get a Notification in the Updates tab.
Completely forgot about this until today!3 -
Don't you love it when you're in a full-on creative mood but the whole universe is somehow working against you doing anything productive?
Woke up in the morning with bright ideas for my app. But my PC restarted and my IDE crashed. After getting the IDE up, the project no longer builds. After spending hours to try and fix it, reinstall IDE and ............... voila............... everything works. I mean WTF?1 -
Have to find a memory leak in a huge, legacy JS application that builds, renders and handles (most) of the basic logic for completing forms - that only works when compiled into a minified js and put in another application that builds into a phonegap based app.
Did I mention everything is bound to a G(lobal) namespace and the ViewModel/Controllers etc. all use JQuery and "this" references and .bind() everywhere?
Deadline of fix: end of today/early tomorrow.7 -
This makes me laugh a lot. I changed my online ledger app to use a unicode character in the URL, which I should probably just use a rewrite rule to accomplish, but for now just to see if it works I tried it out. After confirming that it does, I commited it.

Client: I want a fixed timescale and cost on this project.
Me: OK, what do you need?
Client: We need to integrate our website with our CRM system, which we're in the middle of rebuilding and don't know what data will be available from it. We also want sophisticated Google maps integration, online sale, digital agreement signing and a customer login section that works as a social network for our clients. And we want it in six months time. And an app. And we want you to pitch for free with some initial design concepts. And we want details of you project management strategy.
Me: Ok... Do you know what you want your app to do?
Client: Yes, it's an app! So how much will this cost me?
Me: D':2 -
Build apps for UWP, it will be fun they said. Yeah, created my first hello world app, which works btw. Added one f***ing button and compilers throws thousands of errors. Dude, I really enjoy it! :)

New normal. New app to build.
- Still have to maintain older systems in parallel
- That leaves 1 week for developing the new app
- Slept 2 hours a day, coding coding coding
- Tested the shit out of the app because.. hey, its to help the customers' safety and health... I don't mind staying up late
- Finished the app in 5 days, code is now on prod
- Could barely look myself at the mirror because I look like shit
- Btw the app requires an external device as an input, the existing device works flawlessly based on my testing
- We need more devices
- Clueless manager bought new model instead. He assumed everything is fine, no testing is required
- Tested the app with new device model, doesn't work
- Deadline closing in
- Thanks, there goes my sleep
- THANK YOU1 -
Do you plan to develop a mobile app which works cross platform? DONT USE IONIC(2). JUST DONT. Thank me later. Have a look at react native (not perfect but much better)13
-
Too lazy to come up with a better name...
Yea... the app still works...
5th time editing the crawler logic... 2 years now?13 -
So an app I use for real-time train schedules broke last week and the official app is really slow, UI is bloated/bad devs.
I figured out the HTTP calls so started writing my own, spent 2 days and basic functionality works but...
Now the other app is working again...
Feels like wasted effort now :(2 -
I 'm working with python 3:
Was about to make my app print a text letter by letter (same as somebody's typing the text) and read it at the same time.
I wrote a method for typing and works fine but cannot find a solution for the tts and make them run at the same time.
Can U halp me please ?
Thanks in advance 😊2 -
Most Devs I've met have been rational, so I'm fortunate enough to not have had a fight with a dev.
There was, however, one guy. Had to collaborate with him on a web app. I would fight with him almost everyday to not use deprecated tags, use proper CSS, not hack something together because it just works and the list goes on too long.
But I never succeeded in convincing him. Learnt that no matter how much you try, you cannot convince someone stupid -
When you start a project with random people and they have no idea how GitHub works, but still push new idiotic changes that make the app become slower and slowerevery hour it feels bad.
But when you ask them wtf are they doing and they answer 'Sorry, I don't understand you' it is an overkill. Wth?!1 -
Yesterday, I was perf testing my small app (my first NodeJS app). I thought I'd do a small, ghetto test: bash forloop with curl and payload to be saved.
My favorite is "for i in {0..100}; do ... ; done". I start firing these bad boys in separate tabs. Everything works fine. I check the DB... Saved results: 303.
I break into sweats. Do I have a race condition? Holy shit, is my DB layer unsafe? Fuck fuck fuck.
I fire the forloop only once. Saved results: 101. FUCK.
I run the for loop for 0..10. Saved results: 11. Huh?
I promptly realize 0..10 runs 11 times. I'm a dumbass.
/Me proceeds to deploy my code to a kubernetes lab instance with https://youtube.com/watch/... playing in the back of my mind.6 -
I'm currently trying to a finish a project that business partner quoted for and gave me six weeks to write the backend CMS, front end web version of the apps and an iOS and Android app for each including payment integration and the works. It's so over due now and it's taking me all the energy I have not to quit.
P.S My business partner has now left the business leaving me to pick up the pieces :-(2 -
Yesterday, my team had a react crash-course workshop.
It was like "you have to import a couple of libs, use 'em in different react elements you pull up and Tadaaaa! Magic is happening and your app works".
This workshop was the pinnacle of "intense".
I understood 60% of the stuff.
My team-mates about 15%.
So react is the front-end technology of choice after our architectural-team. The other teams have to use this the technology for their UIs.
This will be a lot of fun ^^1 -
A friend is currently building a 'dating and matching' open source app for developers. Let's say Tinder for developers.
Don't know how it works but I think it'll make sense.7 -
from 1-10 how bad is it if i publish an app to play store knowing it has bugs and is not very optimized but everything works fine?18
-
My phone just died. Got a new phone on recommendation of friends and flash Jolla on it. The OS is super nice but the "Android support" doesnt work. No lastpass, no netflix, no prime, signal works half, no banking app.
I really need my windows phone back. It just worked without issues. After two android phones and now a Jolla in about two years im kinda done with all this shit.14 -
Just got to test the app from the frontend team... Oh God why!!
5 minutes, found 5 bugs (c'mon testers!!)
Worst (and now it's a rant) why do designers insist on working with big screens and don't test it on a standard screen? You know? Those typical screens your users are using?
So, it looks great in a 24" screen but the focus is terrible in a 15.6" screen... No time to fix it... What should I tell the users? Works better at 85% zoom out? -_-
You just fucked up the main feature of the app! Congrats!!! The rest looks okay I guess3 -
How hard can it be to make a calculator app. Apparently Microsoft cannot get it right. You might say hey, but it works already. No it does not. See in math 1-(-1)=2 because the double minus sign cancel each other and turn into a plus. Well the w10 calculator app, just does 1-1=0 and show that this is the result. Yes this is the result of one minus one. This is not the result of one minus minus one. This is basic math .... Stop focusing on the interface and code the base right Microsoft.15

I develop an Android app for my thesis
Rant: I am more eager to fix bugs/make my app better, than write my actual thesis on how the app works -
FUCK!!! I JUST FINISHED WRITING THE MOST AWESOME RANT BUT THE APP CRASHED RIGHT WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO POST....
TLDR: I wrote an old app and now need it again and amazingly it works...
This pic is now not so effective anymore but that was how I was feeling when I was writing the original9 -
I work everyday with a x16 app that is written in vb3 for Windows 3.1 that runs "natively" on Windows 95, adapted to work in Windows XP, somehow the app works on Windows 7 and in this moment some people is working to make the app works on Windows 10...
You should imagine how good the app behavior is...1 -
I checked out this new hybrid app that was released by some local senior developers.
Turns out that on my user profile, my user ID is set as the value of a hidden field and changing it to any other user ID and saving the form will update the profile of that user. Including changing the password.
The password reset form also allows me to change the user ID to reset that user's password.
Speaking of passwords, the value of the password field on the profile is my actual password in plain text.
Yes, I said this app was released by a couple of "senior developers". One has over 15 years of experience and the other works at an IT company that builds online banking systems. They appear to have outsourced this side project to some other development team but... Come on. At least take one quick look at the source code before releasing it, why don't you?
I don't even...1 -
Has anyone tried the "Connect app" on windows? To be able to screen cast for example android screen to windows.
What in the fucking fuck are those guys in Microsoft smoking? It fucking hijacks your mouse and keyboard with no way to control your PC. Only thing that works to go back to your PC is ctrl+alt+delete. Wanna close it? Alt+F4. No fucking UI except some broken pseudo setting. Srsly it seems like some intern did it. WHAT THE SHIT??1 -
Working with Electron is a nightmare...
"Hey you have a working app? Nice, here is the new Electron version which breaks everything! Now find out how stuff works now, because we won't tell you! Good luck"8 -
With a recent HAProxy update on our reverse proxy VM I decided to enable http/2, disable TLS 1.0 and drop support for non forward-secrecy ciphers.
Tested our sites in Chrome and Firefox, all was well, went to bed.
Next morning a medium-critical havock went loose. Our ERP system couldn't create tickets in our ticket system anymore, the ticket systems Outlook AddIn refused to connect, the mobile app we use to access our anti-spam appliance wouldn't connect although our internal blackboard app still connected over the same load balancer without any issues.
So i declared a 10min maintenance window and disabled HTTP/2, thinking that this was the culprit.
Nope. No dice.
Okay, i thought, enable TLS 1.0 again.
Suddenly the ticket system related stuff starts to work again.
So since both the ERP system and the AddIn run on .NET i dug through the .NET documentation and found out that for some fucking reason even in the newest .NET framework version (4.7.2) you have to explicitly enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 or else you just get a 'socket reset' error. Why the fuck?!
Okay, now that i had the ticket system out of the way i enabled HTTP/2 and verified that everything still works.
It did, nice.
The anti-spam appliance app still did not work however, so i enabled one non-pfs cipher in the OpenSSL config and tested the app.
Behold, it worked.
I'm currently creating a ticket with them asking politely why the fuck their app has pfs-ciphers disabled.
And I thought disabling DEPRECEATED tech wouldn't be an issue... Wrong... -
Another case of "couldn't you've told me BEFORE I started working on this?"
I'm making a training in Unity3D for a client, and they want it to integrate with their learning management system (LMS).
I made a simple SCORM package that gets the userID and then uses a custom URL scheme to launch the app with the user data from the LMS.
Tested on multiple platforms, all works perfectly fine.
Than, during a meeting, some says they "can't download it". I ask "which browser are you using?" and he says "I'm using the LMS app."
... the LMS has an APP?
So I start figuring out ways to launch the system default browser from within a app's embedded browser, and nothing so far has worked.
target=_system, nope.
all kinds of weird javascript shenanigans, but the LMS APP browser just blocks everything.
Probably to protect students from malicious software that could be injected in courses, but now I'm stuck trying to find a workaround for this too.
But what sucks the most is that this happened DAYS BEFORE THE DEADLINE!
Well, at least the deadline won't be my problem anymore soon. -
My app is finally on the Apple App Store.
The rant: how bloody difficult was it to get on there?! They scrutinise EVERYTHING. My promo copy, my screengrabs and also it seems that there is code that works on iPhone that doesn’t work on iPad.
I thought it was designed to be the same for ease of development? However I found a function that works perfectly well on iPhone but breaks iPad.
Anyway I guess in the long run this keeps the App Store’s quality level high and it isn’t the Wild West like the google play store. However it’s still pretty annoying. I can see why devs get angry about Apple’s process.2 -
worst documentation ever => Samsung TV app documentation.
it is so rare that you find a function that actually works. sometimes you find a description about the function but it is in korean language. -
Can we get a non-mobile web app? It works alright but it'd be neat to have a proper full screen view.1
-
Can someone help me how to focus for 6 straight hours/day until the end of this month? Got 1 last exam left till i graduate with comp. science degree. I have to study databases but only theory. And i fucking hate reading text. I hate theory. I like solving problems analytically and theory is my weakness.
I read theory shit for a few mins and then distract myself with mobile games and tiktok for a few hours... I cant concentrate studying this shit...
How do i forcefully focus.
Can someone suggest me the best app that actually works to help me focus or something? Or some yt sound waves music?14 -
How the tech industry works:

> make an app to do it from home2 -
Started making an Android app for the first time a few days ago and wanted a button in a fragment to trigger a function. Easy enough right? Well not for me...
-Thought if the button is in fragment_xyz.xml the function should be in xyz.kt right?
-Wrote the function and told the button to run it when clicked.
-Tested the button and the app crahsed.
-Spent 3+ hours trying to find the bug.
-Eh fuck it might as well copy paste it from the fragments file to the action the viewpager showing the fragment is on.
-Works perfectly fine first try.
-😑
I spent three fucking hours googling that and trying to debug that while I could have been doing so much more on ither parts of the app...
I mean at least I know now for the future? -
Been a mobile developer since April, liking the experience and the amount of projects that I've been a part of.
And one of the things that I've learned about this is that sometimes the client doesn't even know what he really wants. I mean for fucksakes, we implement everything, and new functionalities and there's always something that works on every other app (and is basically a standard) and he thinks is not suppose to be like that...
And another thing. Fuck Apple Store. At the company we've developed an app that practically shows information that only users should see (in our logic is sensitive information from our clients) and they DECLINED 4 FUCKING TIMES THE APP. Reason? Since the app's purpose "isn't correlated" with the basical information we show, the user can navigate through the app without going through login.
We basically added an "explore option" that shows basically nothing and they've accepted. FUCK APPLE FOR WAISTING OUR TIME AND THE CLIENTS TIME1 -
Create-react-native-app is fucked up.
React-native init works but when i install react-navigation, it removes react-native, then I install react-native again and it removes react-navigation.
I'm done with react-native, moving to NativeScript.1 -
I have a question on the Signal app.
Two family members have an extensive chat history. One of them accidentally deleted the data. The backup function was not active. However, the other side still has all the data. Both are using Android smartphones.
How to transfer the data? Re-sending works only five messages at a time, which is not practical with some thousand messages.
Is it possible to export the data from one smartphone e.g. via USB to a PC, then import that via USB on the other?12 -
MS teams
- user activity status doesnt update properly
- your status stays as ONLINE even when 30 minutes afk or goes to AWAY after two minutes of being afk and stays that way after you started working again.
- status sometimes does not update in active chat window when person's status on the other side changes.
- sometimes, messages dont appear, until I click into the app and force it to update the status from away to active
- I/O
- One day everything works, suddenly next day your mike doesnt work. Then your audio is mute altogether. Or you suddenly start hearing yourself (echo). All without any configuration changes or restarting whatsoever.
- UI
- Happens so often... You get a new message in your active chat window and you have to SCROLL DOWN MANUALLY to see it!!!
- Coppied text from chat? HERE'S A TIMESTAMP AND A NAME OF THE SENDER AS WELL!!!!!
And Im not even mentioning the performance itself...
Srsly this app is horrendous2 -
After the last update, devRant has been a bit buggy for me..
App lock screen freezes for a few seconds and after that nothing works until I restart the app... :/
Single touch on home button opens up Google Assistant when devRant is unresponsive:2 -
Alright got an idea I have for my game engine that I'd love some input on...
So the engine has emphasis on user made content and openness to that content (EG. open source dev tools and no licencing of art) but I also want to try and build a basic ecosystem with the engine and one way I'm doing it is with cross game mods (Take a mod from one game and drop it in another and it just works... Famous last words) but something I want to try is a companion app for the engine itself...
So it'll have a custom written save system baked in engine to make progress saving and the like simpler for the end user, thinking about building an app for smart watches and phones that would connect to the engine and actually back up and sync local saves to the app and vice versa as long as they have a connection (Hotspot your phone, bluetooth or wifi) but allow you to manage some data within the app by building a basic API to let devs show the user information about the save and the game by adding description, thumbnails to distinguish games and the like...
Just want opinions if it may be a good idea to invest some time into and if anyone has idea's that could make it better.6 -
Probably one of the sweetest bugfixes is when you can solve random application freezes by rearranging the operands in the if() condition :)
if (isCondition1() && isCondition2()) {...} // freezes the app
if (isCondition2() && isCondition1()) {...} // works just fine6 -
Built my first App - the BOFH returns
So I started to learn programming about 7 weeks ago, learned some Java, immersed myself in git and then via a friend got introduced to android studio. To get some practice I decided to code my own app, and what better way than to create a quote generator for the funny and creative error messages as seen in The Bastard Operator from Hell. Now I wrote the thing, started adding a feature and before I know it, it works and I'm contacting the original author, if I may publish it to the playstore.
Io and behold: Merely 32 hours after the idea had sparked, in an act of spontaneous madness I've pubished my first app.
This was an absolutely electrifying experience and a huge feeling of success to me, to see my own creation on my homescreen.
Sorry for annoying you with this antirant, but I just had to get this out!
Btw here's the link if anyone is interested:

Constructive critisism is appreciated!1 -
Android studio emulators suck dick. I've been trying to put some goddamn files on the emulator in order to film my app working- hey, whaddaya know, the app doesn't see any of the files (On my phone it works flawlessly) and when I try to get to "emulated" folder- access is denied. What the actual fuck android studio?
-
delete random, unused column from production database
entire app blows up
re-release last change on code pipeline
everything works beautifully
¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -
As of my previous posts, I wanted to share with you my latest app.
It allows to read feeds from wordpress websites without having to deal with banners, ads, weird fonts and so on.
It's ugly as fuck as it still uses the standard ionic/angular style, but it works, and that's what matters.
Of course it's just for Android, as I really don't want to pay for an app store developer account.
Here the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...
Any suggestion or comment is really appreciated and I thank you in advance for any download, rating, usage or whatever feedback.
Thank you very much.2 -
I started working on a multiplatform mobile app for streaming and I already decided to implement it in react native using cause I found already the tools that I needed, I was curious about if I could do the same in flutter without having to write my own custom wrappers for each native app, and I found this question response and I just couldn't stand the comments, how is that someone can proudly say that he doesn't know how something works but he just copy and paste some scripts from the internet?
What kind of programmers are these now days??
BTW #firstPostHere2 -
I wanted to create a messenger bot.
Time to create the bot: 15 minutes. I test it, everything works, I send request, receive response, and so on.
Time to embed it inside a messenger app: 3 fucking hours.
SERIOUSLY GUY, AND I ALSO FAILED, I DON'T UNDERSTAND A SHIT SO FUCKING MUCH BUREAUCRACY I SWEAR GETTING A VISA FOR CANADA IS 1000 TIMES EASIER.
What is a send/receive? What have I to pay for? Why I need to be a USA citizen? Why I need approval? Approval for what? Why you say I configured the app correctly if you never call the Hooker? The hell I've to do? Aaaaaaaaaa3 -
So the other day I kept seeing too many of "if it fits, it sits" jokes. It was one of the days I was messing around with my app. So I did something to make it work. I didn't know what and I went "If it works, it twerks". I know it's stupid but I crack myself up every time I say it. 😂
-
So I got assigned to this project last week to help other developers to remove bugs from a android app. First bug I have to deal with: field that should only accept integers is accepting other characters and thus crashes the app.
Alright seems like a simple bug to get into the project and Xamarin. So I set some break points and find the bug: "uncaught FormatException on line 789 Convert.ToInt(string, v) .
OK then, implement some try-catch and add a warning message to the user.
let's try it out... alright, message works, close message and app crashes
-Tsc... dammit
search for the bug in code... "uncaught FormatException on line 899 Convert.ToInt(string, v)"
what the...
wait a minute, ~ Ctrl + F ~ - "Convert.ToInt"
17 matches on file
oh fuck me...2 -
Got an app upgrade breaking my login credentials .. login works on corresponding website but no longer on app.
Guess it has to do with either the length (> 30 chars) or some of the special characters in the password...
Great job!3 -
Android force-updated itself without my permission and it appears they've removed the "open applications" menu altogether. If not, it's well and completely hidden.
Getting fucking sick of my phone and other devices being at the mercy of Mommy Microsoft, Daddy Google and Auntie Apple. Fuck them. I have zero control over my electronics anymore.
EDIT: It's there, but it only works if you're already in an app - not from the home screen. Because that makes fucking sense.3 -
So, someone from support department asked me to check the app as it was displaying blank information on a page.
I started debugging on the api which i found is doing the proboem. I checked and it was working a moment before but not now. Switched in debug mode to see what went wrong and it works again. This happen multiple times.
Before doing anything else i asked our api developer to check if api is working. He said it should work now and problem has been fixed.
Later i found out that he was doing debugging/changing code on production server instead of his local machine or test server. -
Another video calling app??!
www.theTalk.at
Oh yus.. Why not!
There's no login, works on mobile browser and its dead simple!
Check it out and pliz give feedback!
And it's very beta!
Also, anyone have any gyaan about growth hacking for something like this?28 -
Currently working on my own Express App with CSurf for csrf validation.
Works great but one problem...
HOW THE FUCK SHOULD A POST REQUEST COMING FROM JAVA GET THE FUCKING TOKEN.
Should I made my RESTApi without csrf protection?
I am crying right now...32 -
We received legacy project for support and fixing.. it had few issues:
1. There was a controller called MainController. This guy was the soul of the project 10k+ lines, heavily dependent on the data from the database.
2. We didnt get the data. Just the database structure (we couldnt run the app at all)
3. At the very end of that controller there was a "simple" eval($_SESSION['somevariable'])
4. We had no documentation and had to guess how it works...
Someone really had fun screwing up this project. Needless to say we got rid of it quickly. :) -

Before I left my other company I was in the midst of finishing one project and I was ansious to finish everything to leave as a rockstar. Now, one of my js scripts brought a huge and long json response that had many nested items and arrays and whatnot. Instead of properly destructuring or finding a particular piece that went similarly to "status": "Verify input"(that was nested unser a shitload of items) i did the unspeakable......i stringified the whole object and just used indexOf.
I still feel guilty over it...but it works :P thing is, if it returns that it means that the user entered an invalid status into the app (it was an inventory application) but it works :P
Oh well. Mind you they thought it was going to take months and I finished in 1 week so yay. -
Today spent 20min in a senior android dev interview debating an ex backender CTO about the importance of final classes where he tried to pull out some sort of perfect answer from me about it. Ironically this is the same CTO who failed managing a previous android contractor who was supposed to rewrite old app and ended up with an even shittier new app in 6 months of time. Now they are insecure and are looking for a new contractor who will be micromanaged this time.
But hey I guess he knows the importance of final classes. Some CTO's need a reality check and at least some business training, because your perfectly written app is useless if it doesnt fulfill business needs.
Their app is based on heresdk and built around navigation. The biggest bottleneck is that it works shitty on low end devices so their competition solved this problem by using a whitelabel rooted tables with a custom ROM wher u have full control over hardware, permissions and battery management. However this startup thinks they can build a perfect navigation app which will work perfectly on all devices while at the same time while also relying on a poorly optimized navigation sdk. Poor initial strategy I'd say and they didnt learn from previous 2 failures, now they are searching for the next savior android contractor who will have to solely implement evrything. -
Finally got Stripe charges to work, then changed it to make subscriptions work in the Django app I was working on for Capstones. At least in theory. Works locally, but hasn’t been merged into our Production branch yet, so there could be something missing.
Still, super happy to have finally crossed it off my mental to-do list. -
first time working with android. using threads debugging is not working like it should. app works great when I'm not debugging. code doesn't get executed WTF i really need that stressball FML

Don't refractor for fun!
An anecdote from my previous company. A developer had written a shitty java console app for fetching stock prices. About 3000 LOC. just one java GOD class. So, when me and my friend looked at it, we were amazed how that code works with all that if conditions spanning 100LOC. so. My dear friend underestimated the complexity. Since it just fetches stock price and puts in database right. I can write it in few days and much better one. So, he started writing code in an OO way. Three days later I see he still working on it. Having a glimpse at code. The app is now Object oriented shitty and ugly.
Guess what new code never goes in prod too.
Learning
Don't underestimate complexity of app.
Be empathic about fellow developer. Don't think he has written a shitty code. Think why he had to do so.
Don't work on refractors if there is no one to guide you.3 -
So we develop several apps for Android.
And since the whole company is full of .Net developers we´re using Xamarin.
That piece of software alone is worth more than one rant.
But today someone called and said he updated to the latest version he got from our server.
But now one of the menu points in the settings menu is opening the wrong mask.
I´m like ... what? Who fucked that one up now. Ok...
I look at the code and, I didn´t expect it to be honest, but it looks alright.
The menu point has the correct id. The function "OnOptionsItemSelected" looks for the correct id and opens the correct activity.
Just to be sure I also check the activity.
Everything good.
So I start up an emulator. Deploy the app in debug. Works correctly.
Create a self signed apk and install it on the emulator. Works.
Repeat the same with a tablet and my personal phone. It works.
Then I install the apk from the server and would you look at that.
It opens the wrong mask.
So it seems only if the app is compiled on the release server it shows that strange behaviour.
And for the love of my 1080ti I can´t figure out what causes it...
Thank you Xamarin! -
I am some Kind of angry right now.
Some of you may know the App "Jodel" (for those who don't: it is an app which lets you talk to strangers at in your city/near your location)
I am in an informatics-Channel and I feel a bit annoyed.
There is a groundless hate against JavaScript or Java, it seems because... People feel cool? It remembers me of the PHP-Hate. Clueless people are talking shit, even if the web is not even their programming-field of activity.
Someone just said that in js you can do any shit and it works.
- you can leave out semicolons. wow.
Another one meant that one problem is the unlogical backwards-conpatibility. "You have to look if the script is running on the browsers and on your engine."
- Isn't that part of any programming language? To see if it works?
I don't know what to say right now.
#ilovejs
Uhm btw.: Can someone explain me, what he meant with "engine"? I mean there is an interpreter, but "engine"?!10 -
When date format is hard coded and application goes international. Application works ok until day turns 13. Error is seen a couple of days later, then it's the 1st again and everything is ok. Just to mention one of many strange errors. Just to make it harder, app works well if running in other countries that is using the same format. Daahh1

My brain hurts from trying to figure out this unit testing crap. Is it just me or is it really a struggle to test your front-end code? I'm using jest and enzyme to test our React app but complicated parts of code with multiple state changes or calling props is making my life a living hell. I mean I usually just debug by console logging everything and it works lol...but my fucking boss has forced me into writing this unit testing crap. FML.7

So I'm working on some communications app which bridges the main server/database with some equipment on the field. Now this equipment works in a redundancy pair: two cpus, A and B, both connected via ethernet, one active, the other standby/replicating and no comms on it. One obvious requirement is that when this equipment swaps the active cpus the comms app should switch as well. Fair enough, going with this into testing phase.
This guy, from qa, got some instructions from someone else:
1. Trigger the soft switch from equipment so that cpus got swapped.
2. Remove the ethernet cable from the standby unit.
3. Observe the communications.
And the test goes like: cpu A is active, B is standby. Switch is triggered, B becomes active, A goes into standby. The cable is pulled out from cpu B.
Test result: failed, no comms ever4 -

Fuck all the motherfucking people who are interrupting me all the time!!!!
I'm trying to understand how a fucking backbone.js app works so I can make some changes that have to be delivered by Friday
I've never used backbone before as I'm mainly a php developer, and these fucking people are interrupting me every five minutes and I have to start all over again!!!
I'll never get any work done!!!
Fuck!!!1 -
Needed to create an app for android for a school project so we tried xamarin because c#. After 2 weeks of crying and breaking we decided to switch java. Now we only hate programming in java but at least we it works5
-
Devrant app cant even open ten rants in a row without crashing. Oh of course you have android inside Kubernetes running on top of arch Linux on your phone and it works fine, please fuck off.18

Why are remote services so shitty?
I mean: have you ever tried to upload an app to AppStore?
My current issue is with GoDaddy, EVERY other FTP server works so damn well, GoDaddy randomly decides to knock everyone off for like 15-20 minutes, EVERY FUCKING DAY2 -
I've kept training to those dumbfucks how this damn app works... Now they ask for a MANUAL, a fu****g PICTURE BOOK... INCLUDING PICTURES on how to confirm a fu*** email!!! How do you even live without brain at all?! Should i put a picture of a computer in it so these dumbfucks dont type on empty desk... JESUS!!!4

How fucking hard can it be to show a simple image. Guess which app has this feature.
Images are cropped to frame, but you can tap to fit the whole image to frame instead. No way to see the image on full screen. Pinch to zoom works, but it will immediately unzoom if you let go even one finger.4 -
I am doing an Ionic App for the Client. The client was responsible to provide me with API, so basically, I will just be pulling and showing things in the App.
Last week Friday, Client tried hard to put the blame on me for their API, idk why? Per them, I should have checked the API before doing the development. The way their API works it very confusing and it just making hell a lot of request. Well I tried explaining to them but fuck it anyways...2 -
Yeah right. If we go hybrid mobile app it's like the same work as native but you get 2 apps for 2 platform for the same time / cost. That's how it works 😭
-
FUCK FLUTTER!!!
Who the hell wants to learn to program in dart, would rather learn php than learn an inutill, and complicated language that only works under Google frameworks. Also, a flutter app weighs twice as much as a app native and closes all the time. I hate Flutter and its community

React + Redux + Router is do fucking awesome stack. Love It much more than angular 1.x. App works so fast, is scalable and easy to maintain.

Coming down from a high of a Cavs championship tonight. Driving home from Cleveland with another dev, out of nowhere he says, "I know why the app still works"

When you add a feature to your app, test quickly and see the new feature works, so publish to play store, only to discover you have broken core functionality 😭.
This just happened to me, I discovered it not log after the update and had to rush to fix it after discovering the play store has no "roll-back" feature ☹️.3 -
Any one else having problems with the app crashing when opening items in notifications.
I regularly have the app on IOS iphone die just after opening a comment or similar, but almost exclusively in notifications.
@dfox.
Restarting it usually works, but today I had to restart it 4 times.3 -
Building with Unity3D a VR app for Oculus Gear & Oculus Go
While testing the app, it must have a certain tag in the AndroidManifest and it just works flawlessly
As you upload it to the stores, that tag has to be removed because reasons (?)
Can't you just remove it by yourself, you fucking Samsung? -
Anyway Github has launched its app.
Positioning as a social network and trend aggregator is becoming increasingly clear.
It doesn't make much difference to me, I almost always prefer the web version and Github's works well.
But do you know what we really need?

Report comes in that there is "no purchase confirmation screen" in the app.
Well, yes the hell there is, so I use the test credit card to make a purchase. Sure enough, it works fine on my testing account. Just to be sure, I try a couple other test accounts. Flawless.
"No, try it on *this* account"
I try again on their stupid account. Works fine.
"Well I just tried it in Chrome and it worked, it doesn't work in Firefox"
I was already testing in Firefox...
Wasting my time over a corrupted browser profile.. GTFO, why are you even a tester? -
Ffs. I thought I never had to touch development for ios devices anymore but I was wrong.
The god damn piece of shit hybrid app build in apache cordova works perfectly fine on android but guess what, after signing that pile of crap with xcode it won't work on ios because somehow that retarded os forgets to listen for click events on a simple fucking button which is used to activate the app.
Had to create a virtual machine with osx and wait for xcode to instal, sign that app only to figure out it won't work..
Even after seaching google for 3 FUCKING HOURS there are still no FUCKING RESULTS.
I'm done with the entirety of apple and all their products. -
I wrote the todo app some time ago. The code is not beautiful, but the application works perfectly for me. I hope that someone will like it. Enjoy!

Lost 3 days because of shitstorm not knowing why my nextjs localhost app wasnt working just go the 3rd day on mongodb dashboard and have a warning that mongodb will block any connections of ip addresses that are not manually added (i have no idea how mongodb works other than just how to use it in code)
Because the shitstorm knocked me off the internet for 3 days (will probably be for over 7 days cause these assholes dont give a shit to fix it) i dont have wifi access so my localhost app cant work
However my dads android has unlimited gb of 4g internet access so i connect to his hotspot and then try to run the app but still fails. I thought i cant run the app until my internet gets fixed from shitstorm just to find out i had to manually allow the inbound IP address of the android phone into the mongodb dashboard. And now it works fine. Fuck off6 -
I think it involves a great amount of determination and time management skills.
I've learnt to manage my time wisely. I pretty much run my whole life on a bullet journal, it works for me.
I might wanna make a bullet journal app one day so that I can finally be happy with a digital bullet journal without excessive features.
And to all out there working on a side project right now, good luck..!1 -
I wanted to build a custom notetaking app, because all the alternatives are shit
I have a decent bit of experience with web development, but I've never tried electron before
Anyway, I decide to go with electron, because it seems like the easiest choice for my skill set
I build most of the app, and it's all working pretty well, and so I go to bed for the night
I come back the next day, and now the motherfucker won't load and display HTML pages aside from the main one.
So I start debugging. I go through each line of code, each external link, all my dependencies, everything. There's no JS debug output, nothing
I leave for a few minutes to get a glass of water, and now all of the sudden it works again
And I don't even know what happened, how it got fixed, or what even caused it
Electron is weird10 -
Who just accidentally volunteered to go through an apps code and write down how it all works?
This guy!
Asked what I thought was a simple yes no question and have now caused an entire department to question everything they know.
On the plus side at the end of this I'll be the go-to guy for this app. And I can document it as I go.
So win win? -
3 or 4 weeks ago me and management had a talk about new features in our product...
So we implemented the new features and then we released the app...
Today I got a really long bug report that summarizes into the following sentence -> BUG: Everything works exactly as we talked 4 weeks ago.... And apparently that is bad 😣
Like c'mon dudes if now it is a bug then why the fuck I needed to code that feature?! Time totally wasted for nothing! 😤

!rant, but funny
tl;dr I made something that was to protect me in case the customer doesn't pay, wanted to check if it's still there, messed up a little :D

Anybody here working with GE's Predix?
I am nowhere near a webdev and I don't grasp how anything of the web app works. Routing, Polymer, CL, everything's so complicated and has documentation that only tells you 10% -
Im implementing kafka with little to no theory understanding. Now that i have finally managed to implement it Perfrctly, even started kafka, zookeeper and kafka-ui through docker compose and it works perfectly in the backend app, i can finally now see the power this technology withholds, and now i have even more understanding of how it (approximately) works, and Now I'm more willing to learn the theory to understand it under the hood.
Does someone else find it much easier to fuck around and find out when learning something new before being overbloated with boring dry theory?
I fucking hate theory. Any kind of theory. Its boring as shit. But now that i have gone through practical implementation of this and can understand how powerful backend i can build with it, Now I'd have no problems learning theory9 -
Even though the app geolocation works for all 20 of my devices it's not for apple.
long = fakeLong;
lat = fakeLat;
if (geoLocationWorks){
long = actualLong;
lat = actualLat;
}
Ha! Now even if apple's geolocation isn't working the app will still work.2 -
What's the difference between Spring Cloud and Boot? And what's a good book to learn either?
And I guess Spring as well. Is that a pre-req? I'm not familiar with much other than Bean and Context and not sure how AutoWired exactly works...
One project I have is to build an REST service but with subservices, and their replicas, handling different paths and on Openshift.
So these sub services need to be independently started but discoverable by the routing app(s).
Not sure how many layers but basically when a call hits the Router, depending on the path in the URL it sends the request to the appropriate subservices4 -
"Download our app for some lovely additional ass licking features....."
Why tech industry love apps? also I hate these days not only mobile phones, but also computers are in progression of "applification."
Programs are only installed do some advanced things that were absurd and inappropriate to work on web browser. like video editing or programming, or file management.. etc. but in recent days, everything is fucking apps. why just not improve your web version of your service and make the shortcut from that? Weather app. youtube app. reddit app. 'tips' app by apple that is totally useless. news app. map app. so much wasteful. these kind of services are MUST be on the UPPER layer than the web browser laid on. also apps are taking much resources on local hardware and that makes my hardware too much slow.
That is not how tech works. that is not how software engineering, hardware engineering works, every single thing in technology must NOT work like that. If it does, then that is not technology, and just stack of cow shit.3 -

FOR FUCKING FUCK SAKE
I have a shit ton work to do. Just finished (hopefully) all of my exams, came back to work and got tasked with simultaneously developing a new app (Android), adjusting some of my own code to work with client's specific requirements in completely different project (C#) and also I have to fix a legacy app (Android) because UE comitee will be visiting us on wendesday.
I've never seen this code earlier. I've never seen this WHOLE SHITTY PROJECT. Guy that was developing this left few years back.
It's a complete spaghetti. 550 FUCKING LINES OF CODE for a one class, most of the methods are deprecated and won't even try to work on Android > 4.0. No documentation. Nothing works. Whole code is ridden with bugs, warnings and looks like it's glued together with duct tape. I even had to migrate from fucking Maven to Gradle it's that old. -
I have been using an app through Slack for months that helps me to get specific emails related to users needing help into a Slack channel for the whole team to easily see, manage, and talk about. Just found out that they updated their app to version 2.0, and with this, the free service, has now become a paid monthly service (along with a lot of other things I will never use.)
So now I have a workflow that no longer works, and have to put a pause on everything else I was doing to find something else that can work, or code something from scratch. There goes my day. -
We have a full architecture deployed in a vm, and two teams works sharing it. All the apps were running as expected, the other team had demo and ask us not deploy anything in server....so we copy the war of our spring boot app to the server (23MB). Server collapse 10' before demo. We said that we weren't. I hate the other TL. I was happy.

As a beginning designer I got a task: redesign of existing app... On the first call with developers I asked some questions for better understanding why the app looks the way it looks... How it works..... And I asked who is this app for...who will use it...who are the users..... And the devs were like.....3 minutes of silence..... And I was like...wtf? They don't even know who will use this stuff.... I immediately understood why the app looks the way it looks.. On almost every my question I obtained an answer like.... The database.... Some Backend programming stuff....and all the time I got some answer from devs like how should I code this or that... I changed every my question at least 5 Times, because I got all the time some absolutely strange answers - which had nothing to do with my questions... I felt like I run my head against a brick wall... Yeah.. Sometimes Its difficult to discuss problems with people, who are closed in their own World + when they show you zero understanding or zero effort to understand you...I felt like the collaboration with those people is some kind of punishment... 😂....but fortunately there are still a good people who shows some effort to understand you or to comunicate... Humanity is not lost. ☺️4

MacOS be like: "Hmm... .pub... That's... Lets open it in... Libreoffice writer!"
>Nope.exe
>Tries changing the default app to open .pub from Libreoffice to Sublime
Now, MacOS is like: HALT! That app is from unknown publisher, your security setting does not permit opening apps from unknown developers!
>Sublime works fine, is used daily
>MacOS now tries to open... .pub files as if they were... Applications?
Wtf MacOS. Ur weird, go annoy the hipsters that use you to be cool pls. I need to actually work.5 -
Service worker.
I've been given the task to write a website for our school, where teachers would post plans, images, polls... I decided to use this new technology called service worker. Been struggling a lot with just, but hey it looks like an app and works offline.
It's really something anyone can add to any website in a week, but the advantages are quite a lot2 -
Sometimes, certain features don't work in my app if it's uploaded to the production track in Google Play.
It works in debug mode.
It works in release mode.
It works in the internal testing track.
...but it won't work in the production track? Y'know, the one that actually matters? Theoretically, there shouldn't really be a difference if the same exact APK was uploaded to the internal testing and production track, but... idk dude.
As a result, I implemented a secret way to test a feature in the production build (it's an app to remotely control OBS Studio): if the first connection you added is named "yayeet_" and you open the disclaimer, it tests the feature. Luckily, I got some of the stuff figured out, but I just thought the way I had to test it in production was dumb.1 -
so what do think ? - i built an entire app with html pages.
With client side - angularjs and
server side - .net webapis working with sql db. The app has over 100 forms and works crazy fast in html form compared to the same form in an aspx. Should I leave it this way or do you guys see any problems with it. All forms are post and https enabled site. Open to constructive criticism and don't be a dick4 -
I would like to know who of you actually works as a developer in backend / mobile app work in native languages? (as to say, no js) With work I mean, actually working for a real company.1

OK so here's that App I wrote for scraping recently added Prime Videos info...
It's really pre-alpha and lot's of things to clean up but... it works... for me...
https://github.com/allanx2000/...
You need to relink some of the references... You can download the DLLs here. Haven't cleaned it up yet and don't need EntityFramework.
https://github.com/allanx2000/...
Now why am I posting the source code you ask?!!! Well you see writing an app that tells me what new movies were added so I can add it to my watchlist is a poor investment honestly...
Porbably invested 10 hrs writing it and well that adds more movies to my Watchlist. Watching these movies even at 2x speed still takes 1 hour...
I could/should be doing better things...2 -

Before I dig deep and pick the minds on S/O, I'm trying to test an app (Cordova) on my wife's phone (Samsung/Android 7) - the feature I'm testing works fine on mine (Huawei/Android 8).
Where it seems to be faulty is making a WebSocket connection to my server - is there any known issues people are aware of? Recent security updates or something?
I'd jump straight on to USB debugging, but last time I tried to do this on Samsung, it simply failed to show up as a known device - tried loads of drivers...1 -
Seriously, fuck Bazel. It's the most unintuitive build tool I have ever had the displeasure of coming across.
It works, but try compiling an Android app, that uses deps from gmaven, maven and jcenter and has java, as well as native dependencies.
It's fucking impossible. -
Was assigned a ticket to figure out why some links disappeared when you navigated back and forth through the web application... After a few hours of digging and a bunch of var_dumps later, I find a gem buried in the newer part of the codebase that basically equated to:
$active = "get active flag from DB later";
I confronted the blamed developer and was told: "That statement is truthy, it works."
Another hour or two of passing session data through the obtuse class structure of this monolithic PHP app and the wonky behavior was fixed. -
just finished a prototype for my android app, when i all of the sudden find out about flutter and dart, and i have the fucking urge to rework EVERYTHING just because i fucking hate android studio and java for it verbosity
android studio is good in basically helping you limp along with java, but when i saw how smooth dart code works, i just started getting frustrated at every little complication the android API makes at doing android things in a java way
fuck that, i'm learning dart now -

I need to quickly test how my web app works on mobile
PROBLEM: some of my features require https. I can test from my pc on localhost just fine, since localhost works.
From Android, however, those features are blocked, since I reach my webapp with my IP address; it is not localhost so Chrome raises a middle finger when I try to access the camera from an unsecured website -and rightly so.
I really need to get these tests done, how am I supposed to do?
I install an SSL certificate on my pc?!?
I disable Chrome security checks on my Android?!? (is that even possible?)
I install bluestacks real quick and hope everything works fine?!?

Rewriting my Swift app in React Native and being told I should get familiar with Redux now...
I have written some REALLY complex stuff in my career, but I simply cannot wrap my head around "state," Redux, or why.
After adding in Redux and converting to it's folder structure, adding a random action, type, container, and reducer, and my app still works the same way I'm left wondering: "why did I need this?"3 -
You stupid tester first add you freaking requirements and not just put back stories on todo and say it's not finished. You are just testing how an web app works. We can also automate that process you know!!!!
-
Why does it feel like they don't teach anything useful in university every time I interact with an intern. Barebones understanding of how HTT works, but not quite enough to work on a rest API on their own and an absolute lack of inspecting inputs/outputs. Especially nice today when the intern mixes browser requests and app requests to make it seem like he properly configured the test endpoint correctly and leaving me to guess wtf is going on in the logs4

One of the coolest projects I've worked on was with the BBC, basically a competition attempting to find a new way to deliver news. Over 3 days we essentially brain stormed and scrum'd together a shoddy Web app using webRTC and 3 secret API's based on JSON and xml.
Fun project, performed badly but won. Moral of the story, if it looks nice, works as intended, no devs are reviewing it and you've crossed your fingers enough, you'll win ;) -
@dfox There's something wrong with bluetooth keyboards in the devrant android app.
1) If you switch from the onscreen keyboard (I'm using Hacker's Keyboard) to a bluetooth one while on the rant/comment editing/posting screen the exit and post buttons become unresponsive. (Pressing the back button on your phone is okay though. If you then reopen the rant it works again)
2) switching back to the onscreen keyboard replaces everyting you've written with the tags ...?

Fuck you System dot fucking Value fucking tuple you stupid piece of shit reference. This garbage half the time won’t install properly on local, app works fine on local without it, then I fight with it for hours getting it to work on the server because the server is a different .NET environment. So go fuck yourself System.ValueTuple -
I didn't think that it could be worse than in the companies I've been previously working at (last one was good btw)!but the current company has a code base for a website made in grails with an angular app and no existing developer knows how this site works - and there isn't a single comment in the code either. There isn't any other form of documentation either D:

TLDR; Send help, need VR video player that works on all the platforms (not IE, that can burn in hell)
Okay, don't get me wrong; I love iOS and most of it's features like being able to connect to the same WIFI-networks without having to fill a password twice.
But holy shit; Fuck Safari.
They made it so hard to access the stupid motion thing which you can use for VR.
Why do I know this? Well of course I have been building an app for a client which needs to display 360 degree video, which would be best viewed by turning your phone instead of swiping across your screen.3 -

I want to start learning to write a simple game server emulator in C#. The game works LAN but it gets LAN disconnected when internet drops so some sort of keepalive is implemented. I can copy the files to another device and it works online without a login etc so there is no online authentication but as soon as internet drops the LAN game goes down to so i need to emulate the online update server or something like that to prevent that from happening. (spotted with Wireshark etc)
I don't have much experience , just created a simple tcp client/server console app but in this case I ofcrs will only need a server one in combination with custom dns. Any tips on where to start? Does someone have an example game server emulator? or update server emulator?1 -

Guys, sorry to ask this question, is there any app that could download a video while watching it? similar case to internet download manager, they add an extension for you in the browser once it detects that there is a video it will show you a small bar to download it, the thing is, this works perfectly on windows however i moved to Linux and IDM is not supported under linux OS unfortunately5

Hi fellas, I am having problems to play widevine content in electron. I am trying to convert ember-app to electron app. Except widevine content everything works great, Version info are:
Shaka 2.02
Electron 1.4.13(Chromium 53)
Electron Packager 8.4.0
Widevine v1.4.8.903
I used http://electron.atom.io/docs/... docs. In order to check my player i load shaka-demo app.
I included widevine like this
``` app.commandLine.appendSwitch('widevine-cdm-path', path.join(__dirname, ./widevine/1.4.8.903/_platform_specific/linux_x64/libwidevinecdmadapter.so)); app.commandLine.appendSwitch('widevine-cdm-version', '1.4.8.903');
```
Also added plugins: true. When i load mainWindow.loadURL('https://shaka-player-demo.appspot.com/...'); to play widevine content it's disabled. I have tried navigator.plugins still can not play widevine content2 -
There is a comic book app, let's call it 'the fucking awful crunchy roll manga app'.
Over two years, and four devices, 80% of the time it loads pages out of order, or the same three pages over and over, Making books unreadable. Reseting the app or device does not fix it. It's just random when it works.
Point being. Its a god damb gallery app! That's programing 101 shit. How dose a company this big, That does two things, stream video and display images in order, completely fuck up half of their entire market for years with no one fixing it?
I could program this thing in a week end. That's not a brag. This is almost literally a 'apps for dummies' throw away project .
Why? Just WHY?2 -
Was tasked with going over an app that my company owns to see what aspects of it we can use for our next project. So, I checkout the codebase in Android Studio, and to my surprise after going through tons of confusing classes I don't find a single comment! How am I supposed to to figure out how anything works if the previous developers didn't comment ANYTHING!
Now, I'm still fairly new to programming professionally (about 2yrs) but I've learned how beneficial comments can be.
Ugh, now I have to spend the rest of this week deciphering this code like an archaeologist inside an Egyptian pyramid. -
what is wrong with android storage access hierarchy? All i want to do is to make a file explorer app which could show user a list of all the files on their device and memory card(if available), but its been days and i cannot find a proper way for that.
I checked all the Environment class methods and context.getFileDir()/other methods of ContextCompat , but they either point to emulated storage or the app's folder, but not the sd card. I have scratched my head and pulled all my hairs out researching a lot deep into this area, but found nothing. The only thing that works sometime is the hardcoded paths( eg new File("/sdcard") ) , but that looks like a terrible hack and i know its not good.
I have also read briefly about Storage Access Framework, but i don't think that's what I want. From what i know, SAF works in the following manner : user opens my app>>clicks on a button>>my app fires an intent to SAF>> SAF opens its own UI>>user selects 1 or multiple file>> and my app recieves those file uris. THAT'S A FILE PICKER, AND I DON'T WANT THAT.
I want the user to see a list of his files in my app only. Because if not, then what's the point of my app with the title "File explorer"?7 -
😢... Built a mobile app with React Native, the app implements Navigator api in JS to get coordinates. It works perfectly on 6.0 and below, but fails on 7.0 to be specific, Nokia 2 (it returns the same coordinates regardless of the location). How to go about this? What other library can I use to get coordinates?
PS: I have checked the permissions and they are set. -
Here’s a neat life hack for iOS. Tired of your phone looking the same? Just create an NSBevel object in your app and set the color to whatever you want. You don’t need to buy a new phone. Works best with white iPhones.

Hey so if anyone works for/know someone in MSFT, here's an idea if you can get it in front of someone that can do something with it.. (I tried Twitter.
Have Windows feature/app to transcribe/caption any audio (videos, zoom chats, etc).
Like this without all the setup and using your voice engine (Translator).
https://docs.google.com/document/d/...
Think of it this way, your still dominate computers and you can one-up Google.... And Apple.15 -
FACEBOOK COMMON!
I get that they released the app because they had a deal with windows 10, but after so much time can't you at least improve it a tiny bit? Even with a webapp from messenger it works faster.
-I got a text
-Open the app
-LOADING
-LOADING| Got tired unlocked phone
-LOADING| turn on wifi
-LOADING| open the conversation
-LOADING CONVERSATION| replied
-FINALLY FINISHED AND I NO LONGER NEED IT
Now how to fix this? First try not to have a IOS imported app, try to add quick reply in the notification. YEP thats a thing! Skype UWP at least has that going for them.1 -
Is this is a beta version of devRant? 😕 My app doesn't works perfectly. Most of the time the back buttons in the app doesn't work and most of the times I can't even post the rants and I can never post an image 😶😖 sometimes I can't even upvote a rant. Everytime I read a rant, I've to close the app and open again to continue to the next one. 😑 I've tried so many times to uninstall and install again and the problem fixes for 1-2 minutes but then again everything stops to work 😑 I've many rants to post but i can't attach a image. If it also happens to you then please comment down and give me a solution for this 😄7

I'm trying to create log files with the PID or some JVM arg like app name but File appender doesn't parse ${myVar} in the config.
Issue is we have multiple instances of an app running but they can't be all writing to the same file.
I tried creating a custom Appender by pretty much copying the source code of FileAppender and then adding a function to add PID to the filename.
But when I use it, get some error saying "name, and fileName" are invalid parameters.
So wondering if anyone has experience building one that works out maybe there an existing code for such an appender?12 -

Often times while working/debugging I get to a state where the app/whatever works but then I realize that it didn't, so some more changes and I get to a new state.
Question is, does there exist something which lets me switch between these states without messing up my git? I do have a solution in mind but want to know if it already exists.16 -
Anyone know a form builder that works on top of angular (or pure js/jquery) so that a user can use it to modify certain parts of a web app?3

It might sound very weird, but after having used Kotlin/Android, RN, and Cordova, to me it feels like Cordova is the fastest when it comes to quickly building a mobile (Android in my case) app that works. It's maybe just because I used RN a couple years ago, but integrating native code with RN was a huge pain compared to how it worked in Cordova.2

Never done a "full-fledged" Android app, but I had to, for school.
It works (by now), now I can sleep3 -
Dude ist sysadmin at server Pool hosting our app for the client.
Client: something minor is not working.
Dude: Let me just restart app, works at my windows laptop everytime or whatever.
*restarts app, hangs on entrypoint*
Dude: Dear client it's brocken.
Clients: *calls us in panic.*
Horus: Dear dude, when it hangs on startup consider to download an update because we fixed some issues with in theis area recently. Also maybe enlarge the docker compose timeout.
Dude: Still does not start up.
Horus: ok just call me on this Zoom link, then we can debug together.
Dude:...
Dude:...
Dude:...
Dude: oh i just saw it did startup mean while, it just took some time.
Fuck you dude, and your impatience!1 -
What do I call Components as used in ECS when my app is entirely written in React and I want to avoid the tedium of qualifying the names?
This is a really fundamental thing to the project so I get to pick less-than-ideal but short names since anyone who works with the code will encounter it within the first 5 minutes.9 -
Freaking hell, why google fucking sign in not working after the app is on google play, I have tried everything, run the release app on device and everything works, I thought they are using the bundles to generate and sign the apks so learned everything about fucking bundling and generated app bundles and signed it and generated .apks file locally “I already used the release key not debug key” double checked Auth api keys and installed on device and fucking everything works on the device except if I upload to google play then download to device the middle finger is waiting and google sign in not fucking working, I moved on and attached the app to Logcat and after a lot of digging I saw the fucking error 12501, I went to sleep after seeing this fucking error number. I’m fucking traveling now.

Hey, can anyone give me an idea on how syncing works?
(Been searching for past few hours, didn't went past some weird advance server admins stuff or cloud backup ads.)
All i wish to do is to make a service for my app that will run every night and upload/delete /modify (basically , sync) my app's local database to the server.
Just gimme a rough idea on the algorithm to use, i have done till running the service every night( but what exactly it should do, i have no idea)3 -
Working on a portfolio project - I ran some tests, everything is all good - 100% passing. Computer freezes - pop_os has been giving me shit lately, so I have to restart. Fine.
I get back into code, i re-run pytest - nothing works. Python apparently can't find my modules anymore. I try a few things, nothing. Why? Who the fuck knows - "oh you need this conftest file", "oh you need to remove __init__ from this directory or that one", "oh it's a pytest version iss---" no, no, no - listen here you little shit, it was working two seconds ago. Tell me why and how software I wrote with the most basic ass package structure - literally TWO directories suddenly has no fucking clue how to import the modules. hmm? Even from within the app directory, app.server now no longer recognizes imports from app.main or app.database.
ALL of this worked. It works in new directories without dedicated venvs - it works in new directories with my global python install - it works with any one of my conda envs - it works on other computers - WHY doesn't it work in THIS directory all of a sudden?? Ugh.
What's terrible is that relative imports will probably solve it within the app dir, but the tests dir won't accept them. Moreover, vs code autocompletion can find all the modules, but python itself cannot. Fucking infuriating shit like this is.1 -
C# question. Most tutorials show code first to create the database. I see how this works when there is one app and one database but I am used to databases being used by multiple apps and reports. I can't convince people that having an app be an app and also design the code is a problem except for the most simple environment. I must be wrong so someone please explain.5

Every couple of hours a certain request from our web app gets a CORS error from our server. Refresh the page and everything works perfectly. WTF...1

need ideas to create an app that runs linux commands on a server from a web page.
i have tried sshxcute lib of java to do the same .it works
any other ideas7 -
I feel like I am not good enough when it comes to Dev interviews but I code pretty okay for a beginner/intermediate..I have developed an app which works almost end to end but I fail most of the interviews.1

Fellas, what do you think about the performance of the Android Compose? Some time the first launch is too slow, I took 5 seconds to start the app. I had some problems with constraint layout too, simple constraints as link the bottom to top doesn't works well, the content stayed over the view, seems as the link was made to the bottom and not to top

Image implementing angular universal which for it self is quite painful... Timeinvestment 8hours
Testing local 12 hours by the team
.. deploying to Google app engine because we need a nodejs server and we do don't have one yet ... Server crashing 24/7 with random errors most are memory related spend 3 days almost rewriting everything ... trying to find the memory leak
Then when I was about to give up stumble over a GitHub issue where someone is saying something about tiers on app engine.
Me going wtf there are tiers everywhere it just says automatically scaling instances ...
Googling .. setting to highest tier .. app works. Apparently I was in lowest tier which only has 156 MB ram app needs 150- 250 MB. Me now crying in corner about my wasted 4 days. -
I really like devRant's community. I just don't feel very well using the closed-source app, which is very well done and works nice, but I'd feel more comfortable using an open source app with a public repository that everyone can look at instead of a closed-source app with storage and location permissions access. Indeed I would be fine enough with a mobile version of the web app too, but it doesn't seem to be in devRant's developers plan. I've once seen someone creating its own devRant app. Is there any public APIs? Is someone already thinking about this?1

I'm looking into an app for work. It needs to connect to both a mongo and Kafka server using SSL or something, but different keys basically.
So need to load a jks file in the main() I think except I have 2 files.
I don't remember exactly how it works but I guess need to combine them into 1?
How do I load each though in app? Need to tell mongo, kafkaClient with one to use?1 -
Can your web app do this? create read update delete search sort filter copy paste.
Similar to that, here is a quick acceptance test which every business system I can think of fails- Find Records Created By Me. Maybe in JIRA it works but none of my work’s 3 or 4 systems that come to mind can do it. To be clear, even my product I code at work cannot do these things in a practical sense.1 -
1. The fucking wifi is retarded at work, it works for 2 minutes then drops connection for 2...
2. The building is also a fucking bunker so 4g signal is pretty much nonexistent
3. Spotify won't let me view my "offline" saved albums unless I go totally "offline" within the app WTF
LET ME LISTEN TO MY FUCKING MUSIC FOR FUCK SAKE6 -
Originally designed backend to work one way but then frontend UX was shit because of how the app was structured. Have reworked frontend to be structured differently and now I have to work around the original backend structure because I don't have time to rewrite it. Everything's a mess. It works, but it could be way simpler.
This sucks.1 -
Well the good thing about last week is that I helped my company get through their hurdles of getting their backend to work with their mobile apps. Though it's in the weekends, but hey it gets me paid.
I just hope that the PM would cut me some slack for not doing git commits properly. After all, we're not big in terms of company size, and if the PM is so anal about it, we can't move fast enough. As long as the PRs are reviewed and made sure that the web app works, nothing else matters.5
