Client: We want it to run on both, windows and Linux servers.
Me: Why would you want such a thing?
Client: The user should be able to connect to the server, independently from what system he or she is using.
Me: So... should we setup a Mac OS X server too?10 -
Me: Optimize a sort & match method in backend because users complain it's a bit slow.
Coworker: These algorithms are both O(n), so they're identical *closes PR*
Me: *start zoom call* "Heeeeeeeeeey Iiiiiiiiiii wouuuuuuuld liiiiiiiiike toooooo diiiiiisscuuuuus thaaaaaaaat puuuuuuulllll reeeeeequuuueeest yooooouuuuu cloooooossseeeed"
Coworker: "wtf are you doing, why are you talking so slow"
Me: "No matter whether I talk fast or slow, the information still reaches you in O(n) time, so why are you complaining"
I fucking hate it when people misunderstand the purpose of (or abuse) big O notation. It's an estimate of how an algorithm SCALES once the set increases in size, in which case you leave out both less significant terms and constant factors.
But those terms and factors are important when you're talking about the DIRECT PERFORMANCE of the algorithm on fixed-size sets, instead of SCALING to larger sets.
1n and 10n are both O(n), but 10x performance on a job that used to take 10 minutes is still significant.19 -
when i worked in IT, some coworkers told me to install some stuff in the "happy" and delete some files from the "surprised". I spend several days confused, until they explained me... Idk if they are idiots or geniuses.
happy disk (C:)
surprised disk (D:)
maybe they were both.7 -
For my fellow javascript devs:
var floored = 12.68 | 0;
Is much faster than:
var floored = Math.floor(12.68);
And in both cases floored === 12
#JustJavascriptThings ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the ultimate dick move: invite your dev to a meeting, scheduled a few weeks ahead, with title "performance issues", without any further comments or notice in advance. when dev, seeing this invitation and feeling kicked right in the face, asks if this meeting is about a certain project or their individual working performance, just answer "both" without any further comments. if they have any more questions about it, just tell them you have no time to answer because meetings.21

Got a LinkedIn message from a recruiter looking to know if I’m interested in a full stack developer role, to only work on front end. The requirement is that I know one of:
“go, node.js, rails, python, C# .NET, RoR etc”.
I wonder who it is that doesn’t have a clue, company or recruiter (or both?).
I’m actually going to reply to this one for fun to try figure out this mess (yes I’m that bored)19 -
This whole Linux vs Windows thing is just getting tiring. It's like sleeping with men vs women. You can choose men, you can choose women, or you can choose both. It's a choice you should be making, not someone else.11
-
I don't know whether PHP or getting friendzoned is worse, but I have to deal with both right now. What a lovely Saturday evening.5
-
Diversity Support Tickets EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE
Because if you happen to be born a woman or you like men (or women or both or none - its up to you) you'll get that €399 ticket for free. Seriously? From when white straight man can afford to pay for the conference but a different skin, gender or sexual orientation cannot?
No hate - you do you, but from my perspective as a woman, I feel this is kind of unfair to all my male fellas out there.5 -
If they immediately agreed to your salary expectations, either your expectations were low or their expectations were high (or both).
-
When my partner in a project has a sudden change of heart and confesses to the the professor that he cheated and we both get a negative mark(-8 marks) even though i didn't know or participate in cheating 😡5
-
Im confused, this is the requirements for a IT Intern. Do I need experience in jQuery? Or QWERTY Keyboard? Or Both?3
-
Pointers in C. You love'em or you hate'em. A lot of room to shoot ourselves in the foot or hang ourselves. Or doing both because someone thought it would be genius to tie the guns to the rope.2
-
As someone who uses both Windows and MacOS, it's fucking impossible to type {} or $ on the first try. EVERY DAMN TIME I DO IT WRONG!11
-
I was today years old when I discovered the CSS property column-count.
Do you have any fucking idea how many times I’ve used CSS grid or flex box or BOTH when all I wanted was to make a layout with a set number of columns?
Why the fuck didn’t I know about this thing?
Did you know about this thing?17 -
Not sure which is more painful for a dev machine - 13" screen or only 8GB of RAM
Either way, I have both 😢16 -
Writing an emulator for an 8-bit computer with 8-bit memory addressing in C. Or maybe writing a web server in C... Both were really fun and I learned a lot. (But I love C, so there’s that)2
-
Waiting for the perfect browser :
1. It's not Safari or IE and without their shitty problems.
2. It's not a RAM gobbler like Chrome. But has its minimal UI.
3. Has Chrome like dev tools or Firebug and nothing less than those.
4. Does not have ads.
5. Cross platform. On both desktop and mobile.
6. Web extensions only
7. Everyone loves it. Even fanboys who swear by Safari
8. Blocks annoying pop ups on some sites.
You're open to contribute more points!35 -
Can't decide if I should buy a Macbook Pro or a fucking car. Both would improve my productivity in different ways. What do you suggest?26
-
Motherfucking jquery or adminlte, either one of this shit remove my element addEventListener, already found a way to do it, but it kinda hacky so I still searching the problem
Fuck both of you10 -
What is it with this team and the developers it attracts. 2 devs joined and left, both had several years of experience, both couldn’t google an issue to save their lives and needed to be helped 24/7.
Now we are mentoring a PHD student for a piece of his project. Dude was left stumped by an error message that said “Can’t find file at path ...” because the path didn’t exist. He spent a few hours trying to fix it before asking for help.
How, HOW are people getting through college / university without being able to read, or debug such a simple fucking error message2 -
I eat food. And I cook food. Believe it or not, cooking is very similar to coding. Things you do at the very beginning haunt you till the very end. Also, premature optimization is the root of all evil (in both domains).4
-
It works. It finally works!
After an 8 hour session I got my crawler to work and give me basically every anime op/ed I long for.
All that using Elixir even though I'm still fairly inexperienced with both elixir and functional programming
I'll try to create an API and eventually Maybe even a database tomorrow (or rather in a couple of hours)5 -
To all product managers: either give us a set of features and ask for a time frame, or give us a time frame and ask what can be developed. You can't dictate both!4
-
I hate all of the people that think "agile" means "do everything at the same time, with no cost". Or, other fuckwits, think that "agile" means "fuck plans, dev team will figure something out".
Both of these types apparently did not read any publication about the subject.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!8 -
Schrodinger's USB:
you have the USB in your hand. you don't know if you have it in the upright position or not. you can only find out if you've got it right when you try it!... otherwise the you're holding it both wrong; and right!4 -
> One of my guys from work.
> Walks up to my office
> Says "say something cursed about software development or programming that would make people cry"
> Me: "If I could I would program games and neural networks with PHP"
> Him: .......you fucking monster.
> Walks away
For reference: We both like php, but know and understand why that is a baaaaad idea.8 -
My greatest skill?
Not to explode when the client asks something so utterly stupid that I dont know whether I should cry or laugh. Maybe both? -
I am speechless! Assigned back to a project after leaving it for four months, went to see tasks, and they are like this:
Q1. Why did't you do this for the app?
A1: Because your team has not yet provided API, how is my team supposed to implement
Q2: Why having this in the app? either x or y not both!
A2: You guys wanted both
Q3: Why is the app showing data that must not be displayed?
A3: Because your server is sending me the data based on the criteria I sent? What else do you expect
and the list goes on ....11 -
"Your password is too long or too short."
Uhmm yea... well is it so hard to check if it's either too long or too short and just to say both?3 -
Is there a point in debating iOS vs Android?
My friends keep fighting over which OS is better iOS or Android.
Both have almost all the features that the other one has and are constantly being developed by tech giants. There is no point in debating, it's just personal preference at this point.21 -
Oooh what I hate it..... Timezones... Who really came up with that shit? GMT, UTC, CET and garbage like that. And then also the DST crap.
Whats wrong with the same time in the whole world? Without DST or timezone garbage that just makes life harder for both developers and travellers which are going to meet someone or have something booked.18 -
Started working at 3:30am today.
That either means I am dedicated or stupid. Maybe both.
For sure, my boss doesn't appreciate it, so I guess that makes me stupid then :)5 -
When you think you've either found a bug in Python, or you're going insane, so just to double check, you make two mutually exclusive assertions that could never both be true, and yet, your tests still pass.
I think it's time to find a new job.9 -
One of my coworkers just had a baby, so he left work today and won't be back for a month or more.
We (accidentally) took the client's website down for 3 hours, messed up our git repo and when we finally fixed both things, I had to spend the rest of the day editing fucking vector graphics (which I had never done before and completely suck at).
I never realized how much work this guy does or how important he is until now.14 -
Hey Designer/Developers, I got a question for you. Yeah, you 👇🏽
When working on a project codebase that is expected to grow and evolve heavily. How do you usually split up your CSS (SASS, LESS etc) in a good way to take into account all the different device sizes?
I am not asking how it is done but more about the design of the code. This would be for a production codebase to be released.
Do you use large blocks broken down by media...
(Media width) {
~site code
}
(Other media) {
~same site code with diff sizes
}
Or do you do individual media queries inside css classes...
.className {
(Media size) {
}
(Other media) {
}
}
Or a mixture of both?
If it is a mixture of both then how do you decide which way to go about structuring the code.
I have been endeavouring to greatly improve my CSS and have done so. But this question has been bugging me. Both sides seem to be a bit sloppy and my programmer side is fighting the repeatitipve code.
Note: all code examples are gibberish and only intended for visualization.17 -
"private is evil" or "static is bad" being thrown around without even thinking.
They're both a solid 14 out of 10 on my wtf scale.7 -
You probably know the "marshmellow experiment": have one marshmellow now, or delay the gratification by some time, then get two. What the experiment is supposed to measure is something like intelligence or impulse control.
Hot take: what it also measures, and much more so when it comes to reality, is trust. If I don't trust the other side to be both able and willing to deliver on the promise later, I will rather secure the smaller reward right now.8 -
Hr Interviewer: So I see you have worked for over 6 years, mostly with Php.. which one do you know? 5.4 or 7?
Me:
*facepalm*
"both"
*that should impress her*
Those are the people who suppose to find me a job? 😓 I'm screwed4 -
Oh my fucking god people are stupid, or ignorant, or fucking both.
How hard is it to copy a password from an email and paste that fucker in and press login.
Seriously several times of “this is your email” and “THIS” is your god dam fucking password.
God kill me now.
(No the password isn’t stored in plaintext, I reset it myself before sending it to the user)1 -
A Gentoo installation might be fun, but it sure as hell isn't worth it, both in time and effort. Broken audio, broken video, broken stability. A broken kernel that doesn't recognize the hard drive or the network interface. And half a week to compile the fucking thing and it's still not done. This is not the right distribution for me.2
-
Python and java tests in college? Both on paper, so you can only write your code once, using a pen, and you can't debug it or modify it. Awesome right... Smh11
-
I think I'm gonna put a list of my demands on my LinkedIn similar to job requirements we get but that any recruiter /company that wants to even talk to me must be willing to meet.
Good idea or bad idea? IMO seems to be a waste of both our times if we don't even stand a chance of matching9 -
dfox and trogus are devrant++ users but there names are not listed in devrant++ supporters list..
You both missed to add your names.. or took the privilege of being the founders and developers..5 -
Tell me what tilts you the most when you are talking to a recruiter or HR personal. I will start;
Them implying that money should not be important when I am changing jobs- so I can accept their lowball offer.
STFU biatch, I am good at this profession, of course I will go to higher salary or higher comfort or a combination of both. I am not running a charity here!6 -
I get a email every few weeks from recruiters for jobs that want senior level dev with 7+ years experience. In android, IOS, Java, or C#. My LinkedIn and personal site both state I graduated almost a year ago ...
-
A lot of docker containers.
I often have to use docker containers while I don't understand it as well yet and quite some containers literally come with zero documentation or bad docs.
This both as for how to set the containers up and how to debug stuff.
This is one of the big reasons why I'm not as big of a fan of docker yet.9 -
Who's vision of the future will win? Google or Apple? Both are focusing on different things. Google software vs Apple hardware6
-
Favourite API.
That's a hard one.
I guess it's a toss up between Salesforce APis and Cloudflare.
Both are straight forward and work within minutes of getting started, and both are well documented to the point, you only need a basic understanding of what you are doing or trying to manipulate to get it up and running.
If only AWS could do the same 😅1 -
You know what's better then the Twilight love story (or any love story for that matter)?
The contract between an Indian client and an Indian Vendor. It's the perfect marriage!
Both hate each other, can't stop fucking each other, one pays money to the other and the other gives head to one, the underlings are always caught between who should be followed and both of them DONT LEAVE EACH OTHER ALONE!
happy married life, buggers.4 -
Security!
Offensive and defensive at both code and infrastructure levels.
So many times I see devs not give a flying pancake about security. Whether it be rolling integers for sql injection or permission guarding to prevent someone executing something they shouldn't.
Why is security in this industry always the last thing to be concerned about when it's the first thing that's going to kill your business.
😓7 -
would software product companies plz start describing what the product *actually* does on their homepages? if u say ur product/framework/tool will help me leverage this or collaborate that, it's an almost zero entropy statement, because everyone says so. Are u selling coffee or a .net gui library? because both can help me make my software better and leverage whatever it's supposed to leverage .. so, pleaaase, just say what ur product does, if that doesn't sell it, using hyped catch all phrases won't either ...
oh, and stop calling ur products somethingfy or somethingly .. just stop -
The dev usually sitting next to me is on vacation. Our senior dev is on vacation. Team analist, on a plane to a Greek beach as we speak. Both architects the company employs, gone for another two weeks or so. Lead analist, you guessed it, on vacation.
I'm enjoying the peace & quite for now but god forbid I run into any problems these next coming weeks.3 -
Why do all developers that seem to know their stuff drinks, smokes or both? Is it some sort of a trade secret?27
-
Some time ago, I asked DevRanters if you would use US or UK version of word.
Most of you said, whatever.
I just found case for using both :D7 -
Shower thoughts:
Golf may be the perfect Dev sport.
Arguments for:
- Takes a relative degree of either skill or patience, usually both
- most people suck at it
- you need to practice
- alcohol
- haters gon hate
Arguments against:
- Takes a relative degree of either skill or patience, usually both
- most people suck at it
- you need to practice
- alcohol
- haters gon hate
- you have to be outside
Also applies to musicianship, I guess.9 -
I solved this riddle/puzzle. Now my inner completionist split into two and both are arguing what is worse: taking the solved puzzle apart or leaving the 15 remaining possibilities unsolved...
*rips of his face* 💀3 -
Anyone here has posture problems like anterior pelvic tilt or rounded shoulders form sitting in front of a computer all day?
I have them both and it
It basically makes me look like shit when I walk. Will strength training help with these issues?
Edit: tags16 -
guess what i learned today?
i have no creativity whatsoever.
or at least in a design sense.
i bought a website my first website a few weeks ago and the main page looks, well, barfable.
orange on blue? i have no where near enough css experience to pull that off. i ended up trying to make it like a linux distro (zorin os), which is neon blue on black.
i asked for advice on the ux stackechange network, and of course, two people with a low reputation both answered, and of course of course, both their answers contradicted each other.
welp, fuck me.6 -
My dissertation at university was to analyse chat logs of pedophiles in the hope that the application of a density metric could flag up both explicit chats between parties (which it did very well) and more importantly flag up potential on going grooming (it was a bit hit or miss) I love telling people about this because it freaks them out2
-
@AlexDeLarge and any other React guys, which do you prefer? Traditional css files, whether that be vanilla or with a preprocessor, or style objects for each component.
There are some pretty clear pros i can identify for both sides, but I'm pretty sure I'm missing somethings and I'd like to hear from you guys your opinions and experiences with either27 -
Finally made some progress with the project that has been kicking my ass the past three or so months.
Also finally free from the migraines I've been having the last couple of days. First time in a week I'm not either nauseous, in pain or both.
Now I'm going to make grilled cheese sandwiches and watch some true crime youtube. -
"What are the four pillars of OOP?"
Me:(I'm not an OOP guy, but focused on design patterns)
1. Encapsulation
2. Abstraction
3. Polymorphism
4. ??(was it inheritance or composition).
Fuck, Because of the phrase "composition over inheritance". I've been mixing both composition and inheritance at the same time.10 -
Not a rant but I spent 30 minutes writing a fix for 2 integration tests while screen sharing. Ran the tests and they both pass first try, no exceptions, typos or silly mistakes. 2 additional unrelated tests also started passing. It felt good.2

We have a new hire, and he doesn't know much so he is receptive when given feedback on better ways to handle a situation...Or at least, he appears that way. Until the next time and he didn't listen at all.
Today I'm working on the front end to match his API calls. I ask him about a list of options for one of the fields, as he didn't provide that info initially. No worries, there was a lot, easy to miss. He responds with a list of ~100 options, which he copied and pasted from, I'm assuming, their documentation. I tell him that's too many options to hard code, as there is an easy chance to have an error or for there to be one added or deleted, and ask if there is an API endpoint to get the list.
He then asks if I need the key and value, or just key. I tell him if he needs the value(human readable) then he can send me just the value, otherwise both. He says he just needs the key, so I let him know that I need both then, as the value is human readable. He says okay.
He proceeds to make the endpoint, I test it. Then I look at the code he wrote. Not only did he not send me both, he just sent the keys, but he hard coded all 100 keys as opposed to making the call to the external API.3 -
Why do people still use both curl or wget? There's httpie and it's awesome!
http PUT your-host.com header-name:value parameter=value
Profit!
And it formats the response for json without jq. It will just show binary for binary content and you download by adding the download flag.
Yet why is curl still the default!?4 -
There's a classic joke about how programmers check both ways on a one way street because users are so stupid.
Well I took a walk on my break and literally 30 seconds from the door to my building someone was going the wrong way on a one way street.
Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?7 -
Idk why but i rarely see devs who lift. All i see is 2 different types of devs;
- who runs
- who doesn't run which either leaves him to be very skinny or somewhat fat which both cases are unhealthy af.10 -
My current co-worker takes this prize. He's quiet, good at what he does and only communicated with me when absolutely necessary or when we are both obviously on some down time. Cheers to you, mate!1

Overthinking and premature optimization. God damn them both! My mind completely freezes trying to come up with the best approach without actually trying or typing anything, only thinking.1
-
A medical doctor, a lawyer and a programmer debate whether it's best to have a wife or a girlfriend.
"Easy", the lawyer starts, "a girlfriend comes without any legal obligation, you can have a lot of fun together but when you get enough of her, you can just leave her without any trouble"
The physician objects: "That can only come from a man who never truly loved a woman. Your wife is not just someone who you have fun with, she is you bastion of calm, your ever-loyal partner, the completition yourself. Clearly, having a wife is better"
Both now look at the programmer who remained silent throughout the debate.
He cleans his throat and than says: "Both. You need both. You can tell you wife you're with your girlfriend and you can tell your girlfriend you are with your wife. And then, you can finally code in peace.2 -
should I get into front end or back end development?
having a bit of experience in both I can't decide on what to focus or where to stay. throw some impressions or JS frameworks on me. Tell me what you love or hate. I don't know.
help?8 -
Forced choice between two options which both seemingly have irreversible and potentially destructive consequences. Tapping back or outside the modal doesn't dismiss it. No 'Read more' type link for the first option.
Laws and regulations against dark pattern design when?
edit: okay the readmore link is passable but I still want to be grumpy about it.4 -
Recipe websites are absolute aids. Either a cancer inducing amount of ads or a twelve page essay for an unnecessary and unwanted backstory. And sometimes you even get both.23

Unlike the built-in ** operator, math.pow() converts both its arguments to type float. Use ** or the built-in pow() function for computing exact integer powers.

For as long as the world needs computers to do complicated stuff, it'll need good, skilled developers to tell them what to do.
Good, skilled developers don't come easily or cheaply, so they can command a hefty premium, both in terms of job perks & salary.
So putting that together - a well paid, good job in a reasonably stable field? Sign me up.1 -
Lately I stopped being angry at work, maybe because I am already in a “notice mindset”. Tomorrow after my job I have a meeting in another company and I should get an offer for another job. Leaving web development to do some C hardware development.
Otherwise tomorrow I will write the biggest rant ever or I will cry or maybe both.8 -
1.)
I either get way better in math, or find a good opportunity to drop out of college. Both would be equally good.
2.)
Nvidia dies the cruel death it deserves.
3.)
All DEB and RPM package-managers, get replaced by pacman.3 -
So I am pissed on my company's polices or whatever for finding out things that I should be ethically or culturally prying in.
These people hired two JS developers (Beginner Level in front-end & JavaScript) &
Company asked me to interview them and I did but I was not satisfied with their interview and told HR about it.
But HR still decided to hired them both and asked me to mentor them.
To this extant I was OK. But I found out that both of them are being paid more than me.
How can someone with more experience and skill be treated like this. and also being asked to mentor juniors who don't event know about closure in JavaScript ?
I am going to ask my boss for a raise as per my skill, performance and responsibilities.7 -
I offered a girl sex to cycle to the supermarket and get a pizza. She offered the same to me. Apparently we're both whores and nobody is getting sex or pizza. What an outcome14

I want to get into game dev, but don't know which engine to choose, Unreal or Unity. Both would be free, because Unreal is free for students. I already know C++, but I think it depends more on the API than the language itself. Maybe I would like to create games for Android too.
Which one would you recommend? Any experience?6 -
What would be the better approach for loading very big in size or in quantity files in java?
1) Loading data parallel through multiple threads
2) Loading data in series in a single thread
3) any other methodology?
Just asking because loading time is varying both cases.16 -
Question about work experience.
Here in Switzerland you have 4 years of apprenticeship. (School + work, 50/50)
After that most uf us go to a higher degree (BSc oder MSc). Both can be taken part-time. Again about 50/50 school + work.
Now: Do you count thoses years as 8 or 4 or 0 work experience?3 -
DevOps
"Bro, are you a DevOps Engineer?"
"Yup, why?"
"For you, which one is more important, Programmer's Day or Sysadmin's Day?"
"Both of them."
"How come?"
"They are Pizza's Days, dude!"
"Oh..." -
My presentation looks unappealing (LaTex magic) and apparently due to Adobe stuff, videos on overleaf don't play.
So, I have the choice of moving to another format (google slides of M$ powerpoint) by tomorrow, or switch between the media player and the presentation slides.
Both look... More unappealing than my presentation. 😒🙄😤9 -
Integrating Google recaptcha into my web service. For some reason it always errors, both on a production and development environment, correct domains configured, and with he simplest setup. I'm fucking lost, documentation assumes it actually works. Similar errors on stack overflow and Google groups either got no answers or have obvious issues.
Fuck this man4 -

I hate doing JavaScript full-stack projects for huge greedy dipshit companies, but I’ve gained a lot of engineering experience and now finally I have the skill to move to embedded, VR/ AR or a combination of both.
If anyone reading this is in the are of AR/ VR, please share any tips or stories. Would appreciate it a lot!3 -
If my eyes aren't hurting from endless hours of debugging or coding, I'll read a book. If they are sore, I'll listen to music. In both conditions, a coffee is needed too.

"Most ignorant ask from a PM or client?"
I'm going to just say generally any ask with "a lack of effort".
1. Stuff like urgent / angry emails about stuff that already exists... like man if you're going to be a jerk in the email at least look first ...
2. Requests that aren't thought through. "I need X to happen." , "So you want X to happen?", "Oh gawd no, only when Y and Z and ... some other vague stuff!"
3. Requests with incomplete sentences... hard to do a thing without a verb or noun or both.3 -
Those of you who did some kind of programming class in highschool, did they teach you about git?
I was talking to a friend the other day and we both said the one thing we wish we knew back then was git. Both us had projects go completely missing or fubar at T-10 seconds. I don't recall even knowing that version control was a thing10 -

Got a permanent contract today after 1½ year of temporary contract. 🤩
I'll be doing mostly whatever I want, but it starts with a new mobile app for both Android and iOS. Maybe I'll try Xamarin or React Native. However, I don't know iOS (Swift) yet, so maybe I'll learn it along the way. It depends on what would be best for the users.1 -
I come back after a week of vacation and everything is broken.
What does Jenkins say?
Jobs disabled days ago.
- Yeah it hangs randomly and is blocking other projects.
Don't know if I'm gonna cry or laugh like a maniac, maybe both. -
As an interviewer or a senior software engineer who would want to hire someone new to your team, would you expect a person with a solid grasp of algorithms or a person who has good experience in the stack you are using? If both, what would be your priority?10

Also both tsoding and Zorchenhimer are really lovely to watch. Tsoding does a lot of different mainly lowlevel things (like making a game in C or adding gamepad support to GRUB) and Zorchenhimer developes games for the NES and they can both be found on Twitch3 -

Being a programmer or dev is a lot like being a chef: (I've done both)
Sure it's something anyone can just jump in on with minimal experience, and probably make a little thing that kinda looks cool to the layman, but it takes experience and hard lessons to make something that will impress the judges.4 -
I have 2 laptops. I use 1 for coding and 1 for gaming.
For some reason, the coding laptop keeps giving BSOD once in a while, but the other one never gave BSOD.
Believe me, I've had it longer (the gaming one), don't shut it down or restart often and they both run the exact same windows build versions! 🙄🙄4 -
Pm orders me to integrate data from several closed systems into a new CRM, problem is... corporate security won't allow me to push data between these networks as there are extremely sensitive data on these systems. I hate myself. I have insomnia. Sleeping is hard for me. I can be easily waken up by little movements, change of temperature and even little noise. Also I have a nasal cycle. When I'm asleep I can even wake up because of this stupid nasal cycle.
A long deep uninterrupted sleep or breathing in both of my nostril is heaven for me.1 -

Being a Tech Co-Founder is both boon and a bane.
Boon: You know how to build it.
Bane: You just start building without thinking.

How do you type with pairs of characters like () [] <> "" etc.?
Do you type them both, then move the cursor back and type the stuff inside or do you type the first of the pair, then type the stuff inside and then close it with the second of the pair?
I just realized I do both techniques, apparently randomly, which weirds me out.
Also my IDE often places the second character of the pair automatically.10 -
So i was considering to start learning laravel but after all the hate php gets, i'd like to ask for your opinions guys.
I recently started working on django for a college project and that made want to learn new stuff, so i'm hesitating between JS (plain Javascript, jquery, node, angular...), laravel, ruby on rails or anything that could help me both on frontend or backend.
Any opinion is welcome and most appreciated11 -
You know it's kinda your fault when your CSS works properly in Internet Explorer and Firefox, but doesn't in Chrome or (non-Chromium) Edge.
However:
Spec says text-align doesn't apply to inline elements, but both Internet Explorer and Firefox seem to disregard that spec and do it anyway. What the fuck?3 -
I still wonder which one is better to fully learn/understand. I know to code something in both, I know about the different way of how they handle memory and I know about some of their use-cases, but then again... this stupid question still pops out:

Sometimes, I feel my codes follow quantum mechanics... Uncertainty everywhere.. Either it will run or follow proper standards.. Expecting both at a same time.. is not yet possible..

Command Prompt is archaic and useless. The most I can do with it (without using other programs) is copy files and overwrite user passwords. Both useful, granted, but nothing compared to the Windows GUI - or, like, any other command line? Heck, I'd rather just have a python shell and nothing else.

Fuck Xamarin! Fuck Xamarin.Forms!
It's slow, it's full of bugs, it's missing basic functionality, it's rapid new updates breaking older frameworks, it's a shitty unstable IDE on both Mac and Windows, it's the need to frequently reopen files or restart the IDE to fix "intellisense" or the false compile errors, it's non working UI builder and previewer, it's connection issues with simulators, emulators and real devices, ...
Have I forgotten something? Probably yes.

Still on the fence: to jump to the dark side and become a consultant - or stay where I’m at. There be cookies on both sides. And now there be offers aplenty as well…
To stay and do DevSecOps and refactoring (and hopefully in the future rearchitecting) in an environment I’m very damn comfortable in or jump into the unknown (tho into any of the few tech companies I have a positive image of) to become a cloud consultant? Or to work with F#? Or to the EV industry? So many options…
I’m spoiled with choices and I don’t like that.7 -
Every tool in the JS ecosystem goes out of its way to support faulty or outdated variants of every interface, yet nothing is actually forgiving or fault tolerant. Indigogo is to retail what ICOs are to he financial industry.
- some random people think of an idea (ICO = token, IGO = magical dick cream)
- they both rely on well made but completely horse-shit marketing material
- they both spam your sites with the same repetitive ads
- they both offer discounts for getting in early (aka give us money before we have designed or built anything)
- they both make outlandish and sometimes illegal product claims (ICO = Visa is a partner, IGO = magic dick cream does magic things)
- in the end most of both options ends up giving you nothing at all and just running away with your money
- best case scenario they both deliver a product that is utterly worthless and meaningless
- everyone is hunting for that one coin or product that is a not a total scam.
I don’t hate indigogo but they certainly are shady as fuck. I’ve rolled the dice on then 4 times and got scammed on 2 of them. It’s basically a crap shoot.1 -

The eggs have to make a symmetrical pattern in the box otherwise something doesn't feel right.
They used to do boxes of 15, which worked perfectly. Now it's either 6 or 12, both of which potentially require you to adjust the number of eggs you eat to get a symmetrical pattern.
It is both necessary and sufficient that the number of holes in the egg box should be an odd number.
Nine and fifteen work really well. All the other odd numbers are either too big, or negative, or prime, which would be impractical.9 -

I'm curious - how strict are you (or how strict is your lead / manager) about keeping stuff both detailed and up to date in Jira (both in terms of sprints & tickets)?
I've always drawn a pretty hard line with this - stuff in our Jira environment always has a detailed description, approximate estimate, is kept up-to-date with who's working on it, assigned appropriately, etc. But others I've spoken to seem to barely care if any tasks are in there properly at all.2 -

What use is a frontend developer (having exclusively frontend development knowledge) that's not a designer / isn't good at design.
Sorry if I'm being harsh, but you're either a web developer, knowing how to build web apps (or websites, or whatever), or a UX developer or whatever, knowing how to do pretty (and usable and accessible and...) things. Or even both.
Lemme say it differently. You either come from a web design and build a frontend, or come from the development of an application (database, logic, architecture, APIs, etc., backend++) and build a frontend for it. Again, or both.
Not being able to design, and not being able to build a product, is just... nothing? You're in the middle.
Sorry, but I don't think you're a developer. Maybe a coder.11 -

Some people like to spring clean, rearrange their house, wash their car, build shelves, or some other chore.
Me? I just spent a couple or so days manually "syncing" the packages on my 2 laptops. That is, making sure that `apt-mark showmanual` and `dpkg-query -l` shows the exact same output on both of them, by manually apt-marking / apt-get installing / removing the exact same set of packages as manual/auto and ensuring the exact same set of "recommended" / "suggested" packages are pulled as dependencies on both.
The end result is a sysad's ideal - I have wasted countless hours making sure absolutely nothing has changed. But hey, my package list is clean, and if aliens from a software dimension abducted one laptop... I have an exact clone ready. -

Asp.net or Spring ? I am a java developer personally but want to know your oppinion on them both for 2017 :)5
-
I often get posed the option of using Go or Node, personally I think they’re both good languages and that they both have different purposes. But I was just wondering, what’s the sentiment on DevRant?9

Best: leaving Job in just 6 months to start freelancing.
Worst: yet to make :p, probably I'm planning to stop working for masters or moving to Geemany from India for on site project. And both are pretty much risky 😅 -
About to tell the boss I can spend more time tracking my time and moving tasks around in the latest of the project management softwares I’ve had to use here, or I can do the actual work. Not both.

I have the creeping feeling that my laptop is going to kick the bucket (in some way or another) soon. I've had two laptops die on me, both times it was something breaking inside the HDDs and I ended up loosing almost all of my data in both cases.
This time I want to be prepared. How do you guys back up your stuff? Is there a way to take a complete image of all my files? (for windows) or should I manually sift through my files and save them in an organized manner on an external disk?11 -
I'm trying to generate a PDF from a website (https://devhints.io/react) on Ubuntu, but the two packages I tried (htmldoc and htmltopdf) both split the code at onto separate pages. I'm trying to have the code blocks on one page or start a new page and then have the title of the code block and the code block.
Any ideas?2 -

Does AngularJS still have momentum. I toyed with it for a while on a side project. Since then .Net Core launched and most of my work (both day to day and side projects has been in MVC 5 or .Net Core)
I wanted to go back to tinkering with that one side project but it seems that some of the hype surrounding AngularJS has died off.6 -
So I'm soon to become someone that carries 2 phones... I think. Sorta like work vs personal except I own both so more like rooted/primary vs unrooted/backup/specific use cases.
I can't imagine putting both phones in my pocket or on my desk... Or maybe even remember to charge the backup daily. Not sure atm how often I'll use it either. (It's a pixel 2 which I bought for live captions).
So how do you manage multiple devices?5 -
I have 2 server that run in production that using SQL Server Developer Edition and SQL Server Standard Edition. This was setup by shit people before they all resigned from the company.
I need to upgrade both server to Enterprise Edition. It give me a real pain since both server is on production side now.
Is it possible to upgrade it without any error or long downtime?3 -
Is there any sane front-end framework that I can choose to learn with this criteria:
- Good documentation(both for the setup abstract and practical guidance and framework hands-on)
- A lot of examples
- Description of best practices in it's context
- Currently maintained and developed
- Uses modern JS(if any) under the hood
- Covers well localization and globalization practices
Or am I dreaming? 🙄6 -
Loud music at about 3 - 5 am with my partner on skype as we both hack away and every so often mumble about or rant about some shit.

For an app, to be available in IOS and Android, i need to code it in both languages (Swift and Java)? or there is another way to do it?7

People ask me who do i support israel or palestine, to which i have no clue, i know nothing about both, i dont care about both and i have nothing against both, but whenever i have to choose a side and dont know which one i just look at what america chose and immediately i know they chose the bad guys because america is the biggest terrorist organization to ever exist on this planet. This means israel is also a terrorist country because it inherited their superior terrorist master country
However after seeing what these palestine barbarians do to israelis on https://watchpeopledie.tv/ and seeing them how happy they are whenever they kill someone, they're so joyful and blissful as if they won a billion dollar lottery, i will choose not to in fact stand with palestine, as they are no better than the terroristic israel country, so fuck palestine too
I view both of them as terrorist vs terrorist fight. A cartel vs cartel. I dont have to choose any side to support in this case
There you go. That's how a logical, objective, rational mind creates conclusions and decisions based on facts36 -
Decided to learn C# after learning C, its a goddamn nightmare I get that C# like C++ wants to abstract and provide supposedly more easier/shorter ways to write Code but honestly I abhor both languages.
Are there any true alternatives that dont focus too much on oop? or arent bloated to hell?4 -
!dev but why can't I use messenger services like WhatsApp or Telegram in the browser without my phone powered and connected? Why are both services still so popular anyway?7

In the USA, the country where same-sex marriages are legal, 65% of people do believe in a religion that explicitly states that gay people should be beaten to death with rocks.
Make up your mind. You're either pro-equality or you're a christian. You can't be both.8 -

What tools do you use for project file generation & similar automation?
Things like CRUD generation, for both front/backend?
Are there any open-sourced or enterprise tools, or do you have in house developed generators?
Any feedback appreciated!2 -
I don't even know that i should say it was a good problem or a bad one, i was programming a magnetometer sensor in both spi and i2c. I was tired of not working
I touched the sensor it dropped off!!! It was not soldered well!!!! At the problem was not from the code1 -
Caps lock is an annoying key in a prominent place, so I want to remap it. Backspace or control both seem like a good option. Any experience or preferences? Of course this is very personal, but I'd like to hear from you anyways.11

So I have two big named companies who have offered me a job after I graduate from college... Choice A is a defense contracting and technology company in the US and is very reputable. While, Choice B is a higher education software company and is reputable but not as popular as choice A.
I enjoy both work and think both would be a great platform for my career, however I don't know how heavy the weight of choice A's (more reputable) name on my resume will carry when applying for mid-career level jobs than Choice B.
Should I even worry about the name of the company?... Or mainly worry about what I would be doing at each company?3 -
I was merging using Visual Studio Code when I realised I wanted to merge neither the current nor the incoming code. I wanted it both gone. And that option does not exist!
Only accept one, the other, or both.
T'was a mildy interesting experience.4 -
I don't know if anyone here, who tried to answer the question for real, did not answer "my current boss" or "myself", but I am fairly certain, I still have to meet my best boss.
Had two so far and both had their flaws that are hard to deal with. -
I wrote about Java sockets and networking a few weeks ago. As a follow up, how would you manage state in a scenario with a server and multiple clients? A few solutions I've thought of:
Making the client and the server share a common class that makes the both of them know what can and can not be done.
Having a "Message" class which will contain a static method for parsing a received payload and return a Message instance with intent and methods to resolve intent (i.e. sending data to the client).
Perhaps both concepts should be used, or perhaps none. I'd like to hear your ideas :)8 -
Oracle while trying to install their database on Windows 10 (both, at least, only inside a VirtualBox): sorry, but the path containins space character. Which is because either your UI dialog failed to properly escape or your installer failed properly handle a native file path, Oracle! Nevermind totally ignoring the OS's UI style and cropping your own error message in the second line.1

Do you think that the FullStack title is valid? I personally think you're either on one End or the other but both Ends are too complex to be able to say you "master" both14

So what are everyone's predictions for Bitcoin on the 31st. Rise or fall? Maybe a bit of both? Recovery times? Impact on other cryptocurrencies?
I'm expecting to see some short lived, possibly huge drops, across the board, followed by it shooting back up within a week. Interesting time though.
Hope you're all are able to cash in, if there's anything to cash in on.
Good luck!2 -
Either you curse the world or bury yourself in self loathe in the face of repeated failure says a lot about you as a person.
Now what does it mean when you somehow do both at the same time?3 -
Last week i met my teacher for my final project. He said i must compare 2 method that written in journal with the program that i make. I said okay i will do that.
Today i showed him the oop and mvc journal he said both of then is not a method. Method should have a calculating formula you must compare a method that you can calculate and make a new formula with both of the journal.
Can someone tell me if that is wrong or not? Im confused. Is oop and mvc does have calculate formula? As far as i know oop and mvc only have relationship between the object.1 -
How different should two different technologies be to consider putting both on your resume?
Like is it okay to put both CSS and Sass (https://sass-lang.com/dart-sass) or are they too similar to reasonably do so, what about javascript and 'Google App Script'
How do you determine if it's worth being on your resume orif you should only have the more known one on the resume unless the job requirements advertise the other?
And at what point do you 'know' enough to put it on your resume if i should? At what point can I say I 'know' sass or google script enough to advertise myself with it?1 -
Hey Kotlin users. Do you use Kotlin for Android, or for non-Android stuff? If both, then answer Android. I'm interested to see how many non Android Kotlin devs we have here.2

Help needed : Macbook Pro i5 2018 with 16go of ram or Macbook Pro i7 2018 with 16go of ram, I will use this computer mainly for coding so I won't be doing any video editing
PS : both of them are 13 inches
What do think I should chose?10 -

Turning to Devrant to search for researchers because THEY ARE NOWVERE TO BE FOUND!
Like i think research is cool, researchers create the stuff that developers will use later, but unlike them, there isn't any community or even indian tutorials.
As a new research student myself i'm both delighted and terrified.2 -
What container/virtualisation technology do you guys prefer?
Also I've been thinking of picking up either k8s or docker, mainly docker for ease of deployment or do you think it's wortb learning both perhaps? I do know they have a bit of different use cases6 -
So I have some android device experience as well as scala with Play framework and someone has asked if I can build them and android and iOS for their business. Mainly information with a few tools for using their companies methodologies. I have never created an iOS app before only Android.
So my question is what should I do, write both natively or do hybrid using PhoneGap or alike (recommendations welcome)3 -
Tried using Eclipse to practice coding, never understood how to properly set up. It could be not beginner friendly or just a total noob. I think both.1

So here's my question. To print PDF's is better doing via Backend or Frontend? I've been testing and for me, both have some pros and cons, but I want to listen to u guys.2

Nobody is here, right? So, I can complain without sounding mean...
Vue Mastery and Vue School are both absolute nightmare education offerings.
That's all. Mindbogglingly invaluable.
Maybe it's the churn... but also - you could rerecord those videos in a week or two and have them updated... easy...4 -
What's your team's best practice when using JIRA (on premises or cloud) and VSTS or GitHub?
Who manages issues/tickets and are they duplicated in both locations? Is one for PM only and other for Devs??
We have both tools and I'm trying to figure out a workflow that doesn't kill devs and PMs.
We have Office 365 so I heavily use MS Flow to help (Jira bug turns into vsts work item) etc, but any insight from anyone who has a similar setup would be appreciated! -
So as these people can see we can wait them out and we’re both gonna be skeletons collecting dust
Budge asshole
Sit at the goddamn table and budge on expectations or the deadline will be passed ! -

I have both tried this with Grub 2.04 and 2.02 Why apparently this has been a bug as far back as https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/... This is either a fault in how I've set up my lfs system thus far or it must be some sort of oversight ugh!!!! -
Many memes mock frontend development, showing a beautiful and simply frontside of something in contrast to an exceptionally chaotic backside or inside of a product.
Single page applications by fullstack developers combine both sides, bringing the unpolished industrial aesthetic of backend logic to JavaScript while making sure that also the frontend isn't that shiny at least at second glance.4 -
What do you think about cash? Most people use cards or NFC, and I'm happy with the possibility of paying with both cash and cards, but I have friends who would like to see cash canceled altogether.7

Okay so I've been away from coding for about 2months now I think. Pretty sure I've forgotten almost everything about the languages I knew, except the basics. My plan is to learn new languages or go back and re learn the ones I knew...or both As for the reason why I haven't done any coding, I blame college. Haven't had much free time.1

What is better for a Junior position front end or backend? I like both and I don't want to apply to full stack positions cause it's exhaustive and salary not worth it and not good as a starting point for a dev journey.14

So, as per usual, I am not sure what I am doing.
I want to make multiplayer games on the web using web sockets.
But of course I want there to be multiple game servers for horizontal scaling (I'm gonna hit it big)
Specifically for either Node.JS or ASP.Net (or both) how could I manage such a thing where there are 2 servers and 2 users. User A is assigned to server A by load balancer, and user B is assigned to server B. But they play in the same game?
Best I know of so far is to connect both game servers to a redis backing. But this seems like a convoluted way to communicate. I would rather have them both route to the game server (Whichever server the game starts on)17 -
So I booked some hand tattoos for this week. Both my hands are gonna be pretty noticeably covered (but nothing offensive or extreme).
Engineers with hand/neck/face tattoos - what’s your experience like when it comes to securing work? (I’m a front end engineer with 5 years experience.)2 -
At the end of a request I want to ensure that both 1) persisting to the DB and 2) dispatching to the message queue is successful.
If one of these side effects fails, I want both to fail: this can be done with a distributed transaction (eg. 2PC or something similar).
My question is, how much overhead/complexity/latency does this introduce into the system? And is this even needed in the first place or am I overthinking this? -
Any good open source project for biginner? Or where to find those? I tried to find some but realize projects both interesting and beginner-friendly are really rare.1

Hello Everyone, My younger brother wants to build a career as a software developer but he is confused about which profile pays more backend or frontend in India. Can anyone suggest me which profile is better? I have checked this source https://interviewbit.com/blog/... and found the average salary of both profiles but everyone gives different answers.5

Can't decide who I hate the most... the sales guy or the project manager. Both make my job impossible!

Mocha or Tape (both with supertest)? For Backend testing. Api, graphql, that shit.
What would you prefer and why?4 -
A movie about a developer will be black and white. Either black should exist or white. Both appears to co exists but in reality may be not.2
