Today at work, still laugh thinking back to it!
We were on lunch break but the linux support engineers who are on the phones as well have to pick up calls anyways (very small team).
*engineer walks to the table, sits down: Ahhh rest, finally!*
*tringggggggggg*
*engineer pulls a face like 'oh for fucks sake' and walks back to his desk*
*puts headphones on and clicks the answer button just as it disappears*
"really!?! Alright lets finally eat now"
*sits for literally one second*
*tringgggggggggg*
*Engineer seems quite pissed off now. walks to his desk again, puts on headset, clicks the answer button JUST as the call stops again*
"Mother of god, fucking really?"
*stays as his desk for a minute or so, walks back, stays hovering above his chair for a little and finally sits down again*
"Finall......"
*TRINGGGGGGGGGGGG*
"MOTHERFUCKER. THESE GUYS TIME IT OR SOMETHING!?!?"
*walks back to his desk very frustrated this time*
*puts on headphones very quickly and presses the answer button*
*answer works but the call is literally dropped the second he starts it (it was a real client)*
"OH FOR FUCKS FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING SAKE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK"
*walks back to table again and sits down. Takes sandwich and....*
*TRINGGGGGGGGGG MOTHERFUCKER*
"FUCKING COCKSUKING MOTHERFUCKING PIECES OF WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK EVER"
*gives a deadly look to another engineer: "I am NOT going to take it this time! En-fucking-joy."*
We laughed so hard xD15 -
Another story on the spirit of wk93. TL;DR I DOS'd the whole campus network for some beers.
In highschool teachers had this blackboard system (a sort of moodle) and we used to have really lazy teachers who only read the PowerPoint presentations and made us take notes. One day I was fed up with their bullshit and figured these lazy ass professors wouldn't "teach" crap as soon as there was no internet connection...so the race was on...
10 minutes before the bell rang a friend and I managed to break in into a computer lab, I booted up Kali and searched for the access points, 3 routers through the building all with CISCO OS.
I figured they had all the default configs, time was running out so I decided to Smurf the three access points with the lab's IP range, scheduled an automatic shutdown in 2 hours and blocked the PC. The bell rang and as predicted, no internet, no class, my friends and I used that free time to go to a bar (on a Monday afternoon).
Funny side note, since the 3 routers were down the whole network collapsed, no cameras, no access control, no faculty network or any network. We kept doing it and every time we did campus security would be desperately searching for someone with a black hoodie.6 -
Today I realized that I hit a total burnout. Last 3 years were extremely stressful for me (4 jobs in 3 different countries, exhausting and toxic relationship, bad habits). Last 7 months are the worst. I became lonely isolated and miserable. I learned to rely purely on stress, determination and validation to get through my days. Was supressing my emotions for a long time just to focus on making the money. Its time to break the cycle.
Im done with this. Next week Im quitting my fulltime job. Saved enough money for starting capital of my own dev services company. Built three projects that generate stable income to cover my living costs. Now finally I can take a long break to recover from this burnout and to heal myself. That poor persons mentality that I had from my poor family has been shattered. I achieved what I wanted in terms of having the money and gathered enough experience necessary to survive anywhere.
I managed to get through all this shit on my own with barely any support. People around me were draining me more than actually helping me. But I managed to do it and now its time to focus on myself, to heal and restore love for living. Im safe now.10 -
I actually had the strangest nightmare last night.
So I was working on a program for someone and lots of things went wrong. First of all, the semicolon button wasn't working, so I panicked and grabbed another keyboard but there was no semicolon button.
I had to copy and paste the semicolon instead. Next, there was a bug, and I couldn't figure out what caused it, so I went on stack overflow... Guess what? Stack overflow was shutdown. Unable to fix the error, I somehow caused more.
I decided to take a break and leave, but upon my return, I forgot what the program did. It was as if someone else had written it. I was simply ignorant enough to forget the comments.
After a hellish day of working on it, the person who wanted me to create the program decided to test it out. They tested it on an old version of IE.
Strangest nightmare I had this week.9 -
What seems to be the problem? Oh, is your wordpress site hacked/infected with malware?
So I guess you decided to disable updates because it might break your shitty little site? And I guess you thought those warnings you got from me and multiple colleagues about what could happen when you didn't update your wordpress bullshit weren't that serious?
Hold on, you want *US* to restore *YOUR* hosting backups?
Hahahahahaha-no.
Go clean up your own fucking bullshit. But, before you click that restore button, please take a cactus, carve 'I am a stupid wordpress cunt' into it, dip it in a bathtub of with blood mixed-infected cum and shove it up your ass.
Oh yeah I'm aware that that won't help your situation but it might keep you from reproducing and at least it'll give me some satisfaction.20 -
Me: “I’m gonna rebuild this site from the ground up.”
Also me, 5 minutes into it: “Can’t figure out this stupid CSS thing I need to do. Gonna take a quick break.”
Also also me, looking at it 5 days later:5 -
1. Find bug
2. Try 3 methods of fixing
3. All fail
4. Tell yourself you're trying for the LAST time then you'll go on to something else
5. End up trying 5 more times
6. Repeat step 4 20 times
7. Cry
8. Finally take a break
9. Return next day, try another method, it works instantly

Hello Monday:
0.Arrive late due to traffic.(Apparently a car hit a cow crossing the road)
1. Try upgrading php5 to php7 and break stuff in the process and waste 2 hours fixing things.(Poor connection so ssh sessions hung occasionally)
2.PHP fixed, open Gmail and get over 100 emails from clients about the server being down(because of (0)).Ignore all.Find a snaglist of over 20 TODOs.
3.Open Android Studio, update to 2.3 and everything becomes broken. Each time i open it ,it crashes and i have to "Report to Google"
4.Spend the next 1 hour reinstalling AS.It finally works.
5.Open Project and the libraries are broken.Spend another hour upgrading build tools.
6.Leave SDK to update and decide to check my Google Cloud console.$50 bill pending.Shit.
7.Try XCode. Remember the project is still in Swift 2 and I have to upgrade it(Would take eternity).Immediately closes xcode.
8.Gives up on life and decides to log into Devrant.4 -
Wrote my friend Sam a letter when I was still working in support. I think it still holds up today.
---
Dear Sam,
I understand that you will join us in our overseas office. Congratulations on landing that job. It’s good steady work. I’ve been doing it for the last ten years.
Your still young so maybe I can give you some little wisdom that will help you in your working years to come.
Let me begin by shedding some light on phone calls.
I try. I really do try Sam. But it is getting so hard for me to hold back the rage that builds up during certain phone calls. Especially the ‘Sorry, I just don’t know anything about computers! -giggle-’ ones.
Those are the times that I have no access to what they see. I’ve no team-viewer, can not take over that screen in any other way. And why-oh-why can I not take over that terminal session dear Sam? It’s because the caller can not double-click an icon or find a terminal session number.
And what is the reason for this? Because they ‘just don’t know anything about computers! -giggle-’. This is a sort of get-out-of-jail-free card. Beware of these callers Sam.
There is nothing so nerve-wrecking then finding yourself at the mercy of people describing Internet Explorer (do not even get me started) as ‘the big ‘E’, if they use Chrome for their webmail then they most likely will say ‘Mail’ if they mean Chrome. There is no logic Sam. That is just the way these people work.
They will suck all enjoyment out of your work. They will make you want to hunt them down in dark office hallways and show them your tears Sam. Because cry you will.
Sure, I understand that not everyone can be tech savvy. Why, if everyone would be, where would that leave us? No. I love the technologically challenged. They put the fiber in my internet. They make me LOL for real. After the initial anger subsides anyway.
But just below that well-willing folk, on the other side of that border… there they dwell: Management.
Nice cars, suits and iphones Sam. First thing a new manager will require is a brand spanking new business-card. It will hold his/her new title. Then an iphone or overpriced android model will follow suit.
Then they will barge into your office, holding it like it’s the next best thing since sliced bread.
Any manager will automatically assume that you will drop anything you are doing at the present moment to acknowledge the presence of greatness. Failing to do so will result in awkward yet fulfilling situations. I recommend that you do not take your hands of the keyboard and give only the slightest of nods after 5 minutes of complete silence and glaring.
Well… you feel the glare. You do not glare yourself. You do not break eye-contact with the monitor. It does not even matter if you are typing for real or not. I once clicked away happily for 5 minutes. I just typed ‘he is still there’ over and over again. Do not break down Sam. This moment will decide your relationship with this individual.
After the nod there will be a flood of words aimed in your general direction. You can disregard anything that is said. It boils down to ‘can not operate device’.
You then take the device from this person and put it next to you on your desk. You’ll ask the name of this simpleton, write it down on a sticky-note, slap that on the phone. Then you’ll write a random date in the not so near future on another sticky and hand that to the bewildered person in front of you.
It will usually utter some incoherent words about ‘needing, time or but’ (I find that ‘but’is a word they like. They tend to use it three or four times consecutive before you usher them through the door).
Now you’ve won Sam. Well… not really. But it will feel good, I can guarantee that.
This must do for now. A new suit is glaring at me for the last five minutes.
Felt good to do something productive with this time.
Take care,
Baltasar
P.s. I just noticed that there is some foam around his mouth. So if you encounter this, don’t worry: it seems to be perfectly normal.13 -
Me last Sunday:
“Ohh boy, I’ve been working on my game for last 6 days, and I made lots of progress! I’m gonna take a break today!”
*starts coding side project*1 -
Take a break folks,
From work,
From code,
From tension,
From bugs,
Take a car, drive to the country side, breathe the fresh air, ride horses,
Have a meal, stay for a day or two, without internet, and then Be back to work.
This is what we all need now :D12 -
First rant, please take pity on the noob! 😐
Recently I've secured many of my user accounts spread throughout the internet. Using the same old password for everything is bad for security and for mental health! 😫
Since I was on the mood, I've tried to do a 'break glass' scenario, simulating an attacker that possessed my Gmail account credentials. "How bad can it be?" I've thought to myself...
... Bad. Very bad. Turns out not only I use lots of oauth based services, I also wasn't able to authenticate back to Google without my pass.
So when you get home today, try simulating what would happen if someone got to your Google or Facebook account.
Makes you consider the amount of control these big companies have over your life 😶15 -
Juniors are a fun bunch to work with.
Over confident, hero complex of that fresh graduate high, and then thrown in to the real world! Where there hopes and dreams are crushed in minutes when they see what monolithic applications really look like!!
But don't let that overwhelm you, your not going to be changing all of it any time soon, hell some of this code hasn't been touched in 5+ years and still works without fail.
Don't stress about the work load, you can only write 1 line of code at a time anyway, and hell, even seniors make mistakes.
The key about being able to manage this beast is simple, break it! Because the more you break it, the more you'll understand how a project is put together, for better or worse. Learn from the examples in front of you, and learn what not to do in the future 😎
But more importantly, plan your changes, whiteboard the high level logic of what it is you want to add, then whiteboard in the current codebase and determine where to slice this bitch up, then when it all looks well and good, take out your scalpel and slice and dice time.
Don't worry, your changes aren't going to production anytime soon, hell, you'll be lucky to get past the first pull request with this working 100% the first time, and that's a good thing, learn from tour short comings and improve your own knowledge for the next time!2 -
I called into work today and was completely honest with my boss. I needed a mental health day after a huge break down last night. He completely understood and asked if there was anything he could do and told me to take care of myself today.7
-
If you're stuck....take a break away from the keyboard. Go outside and take a couple of deep breaths. Talk to someone about something not work related. Then get back in and look at the problem with fresh eyes.3
-
I'm starting to think customers know when I'm busy and take that moment to break their products.
I JUST WANT TO LET MY LEG SOAK IN EPSOM WATER... your users are going to bed soon, it's a freaking Saturday, and you need to go get laid because you have too much time on your hands. I'm in pain and cannot help you restore service if you don't stay on the line. So please... don't. Fucking. Call me. Unless you're going to stay on the line to test. You're pushing my limits, and if my voice gets any quieter, it means I'm about to find your porn accounts and register you as an amateur, uploading cows fucking to get you banned from all the services. Congratulations sir, you've pissed me off so bad, I'm using my "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" voice I learned from my mother. I hope you're happy. I'm so mad I'm not even swearing anymore. I always swear.
Edit: if my voice ever sounds sweet and demure over the phone, someone is about to get fucked with a red hot fireplace poker. This fucker getting close.1 -
Holy donkey nuts, I get too scared to leaved unpushed code when I take a coffee break.

Conversations between 2 java programmers.
Me: How it's possible that your code works?
Frank: I don't know. I try 10 times, and each time, I get an error.
Then I take a break...
Eat a humburger, play ping pong, drink coffee.
Me: That's it?
Frank: Yes
Me: I need a break...3 -
Hold your keyboard! Hold your mouse!
Sons of Java, of Python, my brothers,
I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the sense of programming language fails,
when we forsake our logic
and break all the laws of programming,
but it is not this day.
An hour of headache and shattered monitors,
when the age of Javascript rises,
but it is not this day!
This day we will find solutions on StackOverflow!!
By all that you hold dear on this good code,
I bid you stand,
Developers!!!8 -

We passed a milestone: 250,000 phpunit testcases.
If it weren't for a heavily parallelized build pipeline which splits it out over 20 servers, it would take about 7.5 hours to complete.
Not hating on PHP, and without tests it would truly be hell...
But still, fucking hell, we outgrew PHP.
Not having a solid type system just means you either accept more bugs, or write thousands of unit tests to guard all the foundational cracks in the system.
On the bright side, I get a coffee break after every commit 😄22 -
What is it with clients who have never even seen a single line of code in their entire lives telling me how long they believe a certain change request should take to code.
I mean, what if I told you that your "seemingly simple enough" change needed an update to 36 class files, 9 oracle stored procedures AND several database schema changes. Also, who the fuck is going to perform a regression test to make sure I didn't break anything? Your Uncle Bob??6 -
Some of you might already know that I'm a writer. I decided to take a break with my manuscript for my debut novel (titled Society's Trial) by working on my third manuscript. (I have lots of manuscripts lol.)
Anyway... This third manuscript involves a dev, so I obviously had to include Linux references :D
Also, I blacked out some parts because you probably don't want to read that haha.
(Also... All characters, dialogue, and etc are copyrighted by me. So don't be a jerk and end up copying my scene.)17 -
11:45am: "Ok one more issue to fix and then I can take a nice long break and relax a little bit. My next meeting isn't until 2.
12:45pm: "Well this issue is taking longer than expected but that's okay. I can grab lunch and still relax a little bit."
1:59pm starving, thirsty and really need to pee and can only choose one. Oh, and the issue still isn't fixed: "god dammit."6 -
Things you can enjoy when working in an office with other people:
- listening to everyone chew gum with their mouths open.
- being constantly interrupted by coworkers asking for help, even when wearing headphones.
- getting distracted by someone bursting out in laughter of some private joke.
- having to take a break when everyone else does, because everyone is so loud you just can't focus.
- being hit on the back of the neck by a nerf gun bullet, right when you're most focused.
Why would anyone ever want to work at home?9 -
Not a rant, just my thoughts :)
At November and October of last year I was very frustrated with everything - everything was annoying me and I was bored even with coding. I needed a break and do something different - go somewhere.
So we decided with friends that we will go to Georgia to spent there New Year Eve. Right now I'm coming back from airport by bus to my city aftertrip but can't sleep because I'm energized as fuck! Whole week without internet (sometimes we got open wifi to check buses or maps), without local sim card, without roaming, just our group and good attitude. We visited almost whole north of Georgia riding in taxis, marshrutka, even autostop, and it was fucking awesome.
So, when you are exhausted, take a break and regenerate your baterries, work is not everything! Just wanted to share this with you :) Can't wait to go to work in monday to write some code :) Life is beautiful!
On photo - my friend takes photo of Kazbek Mountain :)4 -
Forget about Internet explorer compatibility, EMAIL TEMPLATES are the actual worst. Outlook uses the same html rendering engine as MS WORD. It's sooo painful. All the bad practices you had to do 15 years ago, you have to do when you write email templates.
YOU WILL NOT KNOW PAIN until you have to make an email template, that works in Gmail, Yahoo Mail, OUTLOOK, outlook.com, outlook for mac, MOBILE, Android, the gmail app, IOS, apple mail, and so on. And after you make an unholy abomination of table garbage, then having to make it responsive/mobile friendly after all that!
If something is broken in one client, fixing it will break something in a different client! And then having to take a stab in the dark to try to fix it and then sending yet another test email (which costs $ per test)
I must have slashed decades off my life having to build email templates. It really is horrendous. There are frameworks like Zurb for email that at least let you feel like you're using a modern workflow. But things break just as often.
Honestly if you have the option, use a wysiwyg editor for building emails. At least when it does break (and they all will) you can at least blame the software.
Which is better than spending 4 hours on why that table cell doesn't line up correctly in outlook.7 -
Been a while since my last real proper rant.
Multiple projects. Business side going into panic mid. Devs are staying cool as usual.
We, devs, have to hold hands so they don't completely break down.
We are wasting precious time in order to rub their feelings.
Get. Your. Shit. Together.
Or atleast, go cry in a corner AND LET US FUCKING WORK.
STOP. FUCKING. SPAMMING.
Can't fucking work for more than 10 mins.
I go take a shit, I have 200 notifications when I'm back.
Omfg their lives must be so hard, really. How can you fucking go into full retard whenever there's a small roadblock.
DO. YOUR. FUCKING. JOB. And let me do mine.
As soon as you let us work, issues are going to be solved, you'll be less stressed and everything will be fine.
Keep asking the same questions over and over, arguing on non-critical things (who cares about wordings... it's 1min change) and the stress will only build up for everyone.
DAMN. Fuck off, fucking emotional idiots.8 -
There’s a junior on my team, who has an ego problem.
Within 6-8 months, they have not progressed much, up to the point they still struggle with language and framework syntax.
Yet, they want to get the credit for doing big and important tasks, the ones they have no clue at all how to execute.
Our team tried to break more the tasks and tickets almost to the point of a tutorial. Junior got upset and complained that they did not want the tasks to be broken for them.
If we give space, tasks take forever to get completed. If we try to pair, Junior does everything in their power to cut the meeting short and again take forever to complete anything.
If we prioritize our own tasks, Junior complains that nobody pairs/assist them.
Took one for the team and started to work on finding ways to get this wonderful person to learn. Junior does not learn. In fact, almost feels like things enter from one ear and leave from the other instantly. Despite being repeated multiple times. Chewed. Presented in all sorts of way. You name it, I’ve tried.
Yesterday was the last drop. They fucking rolled their eyes while was explaining something.
This person is dead for me and I will make my personal crusade to not go out of my tasks to help them.
Thanks for coming to my TED rant.7 -
Ooh this is good.
At my first job, i was hired as a c++ developer. The task seemed easy enough, it was a research and the previous developer died, leaving behind a lot of documentation and some legacy fortran code. Now you might not know, but fortran can be really easily converted to c, and then refactored to c++.
Fine, time to read the docs. The research was on pollen levels, cant really tell more. Mostly advanced maths. I dug through 500+ pages of algebra just to realize, theres no way this would ever work. Okay dont panic, im a data analyst, i can handle this.
Lets take a look at the fortran code, maybe that makes more sense. Turns out it had nothing to do with the task. It looped through some external data i couldnt find anywhere and thats it. Yay.
So i exported everything we had to a csv file, wrote a java program to apply linefit with linear regression and filter out the bad records. After that i spent 2 days in a hot server room, hoping that the old intel xeon wouldnt break down from sending java outputs directly to haskell, but it held on its own.1 -
My tip for staying productive: **Don't**
Take a break. Take a few. Have a nap. Take a stroll outside. Enjoy life.
Life's too short. If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.
Fuck productivity.5 -
I quit my job. Today was my last day. Feels so good to get rid of the toxic workplace attitude.
I really wish someday managers understand the difference between an estimate and deadline, will reduce the pressure on devs.
I'm glad that I can take a break and explore what I want to do next 😀12 -
Pomodoro technique, and if nothing works take a break from sitting in front of the computer, and focus on something else, it will get solved easily the next time you touch your pc9

I need to take a break..

Repos breaking down on pull request
Juniors have to go cause they don't know wack
So while you filling the commits and showing branch trees
You won't get paid cause it's all damn free
You set a new linter and a new phenomenal style
Hoping the new code will make you smile
But all you wanna have is a nice long sleep.
But your screams they'll keep you awake cause you don't get no sleep no.

Do you guys have "principles", like a moral law you won't ever break ? Such as never working for a start-up, a specific CMS, etc?
I'm deeply anti-military for personal / historical reasons (plus you'll get hard time to find a dude that is less patriot than me), and yesterday my company announced that they won the call for tender that have been made by the french defense ministry, this is the biggest contract my company got, and obviously they take it seriously.
So it means that in about two weeks, we'll start a new project and work with the army to understand their needs and stuff. And I can't leave because I haven't finished my studies yet...
I feel like I'm betraying myself...19 -
Saw time in a digital clock (HH:MM) [05:14] thought I should take a 1 minute break and decided to start at 05:15.

Hi,
I'm not a ranty person so I never actually thought I'd post anything here but here it goes.
From the beginning.
We use ancient technologies. PHP 5.2, Symfony 1.2 and a non RFC complient SOAP with NO documentation.
A year ago We've been thrown a new temporary project. An VOIP app for every OS.
That being iOS, Android, MAC, PC, Linux, Windows mobile. With a 3 month deadline. All that thrown at 4 PHP developers. The idea being that They'll take it, sign the delivery protocol, everyone happy. No more updates for the app needed. They get their funds they needed the app for and we get paid.
Fast forward to today...
Our dev team started the year with great news that We'll most likely have to create a new project. Since the amount of new features would be far greater than current feature set, we managed to finally force our boss to use newer technologies (ie. seperate backend symfony4 PHP7+/frontend react, rest api and so on). So we were ecstatic to say the least. With preestimates aimed at a minimum 3 month development period. Since we're comfortable with everything that needs to be done.
Two days later our boss came to me that one of our most annoying clients needs a new feature. Said client uses ancient version written on a napkin because They changed half of the specification 2 weaks before deadline in a software made not by a developer but some sysadmin who didn't know anything. His MVC model was practically VVV model since he even had sql queries in some views. Feature will take 3 days - fixing everything that will break in the meantime - 1-2 months.
F*** it, fine. A little overtime won't kill me.
Yesterday boss comes again... Apparently someone lost a delivery protocol for a project we ended that half a year ago. Whats even better at the time when we asked for hardware to test we never got any. When we asked about any testing enviornment - nothing. The app being SEMI-stable on everything is an overstatement but it was working on the os'es available at the time. Since the client started testing now again, it turns out that both Android app does not work on 8.1/9 and the iOS app does not work on ios12. The client obviously does not want to pay and we can do little with it without the protocol, other than rewriting the apps.
It will take months at least since all of those apps were written by people that didn't know neither the OS'es nor the languages. For example I started writing the iOS one in swift. Only to learn after half of the development time, that swift doesn't like working by C Library rules and I had to use ObjC also. With some C thrown in due to the library. 3 unknown languages, on an unknown platform in 3 months. I never had any apple device in my hand at that time nor do I intend to now. I'm astonished it worked out then. It was a clusterf**k of bad design and sticking everything together with deprecated apis and a gum. So I'll have to basically fully rewrite it.
If boss decides we'll take all those at the same time I'll f***ing jump of a bridge.8 -
Your entire time with the company, be polite and cordial, don't say risky things, basically be a good boy. But importantly, stay social. Just politely social.
After several months of this, enough time that your fellow employees and management are well aware of your personality, go to the PM in private. Threaten them that if they don't leave you alone you're going to break into their house at night, sedate them, dislocate their jaw and take a shit down their throat.
The beauty of this is that they can't reasonably go to anyone over this, as it's totally unbelievable and out of character. And will be so horrified of what they just heard that they will leave you alone.1 -
When I Install An NPM Package .........
1.Runned The Install...
2.Watched the Progress Bar For 2secs
3.Got Bored, Opened Chrome for some entertaining content ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
4.Rechecked the Install after 20mins still 15%
5.Did take a break, ate something
6.Rechecked still 27%
7.Watched a little while the progress bar until I saw the Fatality.

When i Code , I feel like i should take a break,
After Taking a Break,
WTf why I took the break , now what this code do !!! -
I work for healthcare client project in a start up, worked two years straight without a break.
Client is very inconsiderate about developers work-life balance, he always wants to release every features yesterday.
Never had a reasonable deadline, worked late nights most of the time. No one had backbone to control this client from our side.
Its only developers team, no project management, scrum masters or anything, everything has to be taken care by Dev's.
I decided to take a week break from work.
The first day of my leave he pinged me 3 times to change an "from email" address for notification email which no one give a damn about.
I never replied or did anything. But the part of myself is dying of guilt.
Now I can't relax myself completely.
Re-thinking of my life choices atm.
I loved programming since high school, I can work on computers 24/7 without tired. That's how much I love it. Now I'm just tired of it.
If anyone who read this till here. Thank you.18 -
Whenever I can't figure out my bugs/errors, I take a break or sometimes go home and check back on it the next day.
I always remember what Albert Einstein said:
"We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."3 -
#rant
Instead of receiving a motivation in 2018, my boss decided to go anti mainstream and started with demotivation speech.
He started with how good we were last year even when he wasn't around. Well done team! But after that, it went downhill.
We were asked to work even harder, we got new policy (no unpaid leave, no paid overtime, minimum 40 hours working, etc) which some of them make sense and some don't, a specifically set break time (apparently to shut down smokers for smoking at random times), and warning for not being punctual.
And pay rise only after end of financial year.
To make it worse, we are not allowed to take naps or watch youtube on our desk on our breaks.
I seriously wonder what happened during his Christmas NY break. I'm not an entrepreneur so I have no idea if that is a right way to run a company or if Australia government just created new law. But surely I know this is when I say "New year, new company"7 -
At work,
If I'm not coding, I can't wait for lunch or too leave.
If I am, time becomes irrelevant me
It's 4pm now... Just finished coding... Time to take a lunch break...
Anyone else do this?5 -
Facebook is driving me absolutely fucking crazy so I’m trying to take a break from it. But I need something to fill the void so I’m gonna be spending more time on here 😎😎😎13

Everyone seems to have a stress ball, I have a stress dice that says "Yes", "No", "Take a break", "Tomorrow" and "Maybe". It's good for whenever I don't know I should just quit or throw the PC through the window 😅9
-
Who else does this?
>Work on a website for weeks without taking a break.
>Really enjoy the outcome, take a deserved 2 days off.
>Come back to your code, suddenly you don't know where to start, you feel disgusted by your code and you totally change your idea on how your website should look in the first place.
>Delete it, start from scratch.6 -
This is more of a wishful thinking scenario......but language/tech stack/whatever bashing.
Look, I get it, we like development, we would not be here if we didn't like it. But as my good friend @Stuxnet has mentioned in the past, making this a personality trait is fucking retarded, lame, small, and overall pathetic. I agree with this sentiment 100%
Because of this a lot of people have form some sort of elitist viewpoint concerning the technologies that people use, be it Java, C#, C++, Rust, PHP, JS, whatever, the same circle jerk of bashing on shit just seems completely fucking retarded. I am hoping for a new mentality being that most of us are younger, even if you are a 50+ year old developer, maturity should give you a different perspective, but alas, immaturity and a bitchy attitude carried throughout years of self dick sucking implications would render this null.
I could not give two fucks if the dude next to me is coding his shit in whatever as long as best practices are followed, proper documentation is enforced, results are being brought to our customers(which regardless of how much you try to convince us, none of your customers are fucking elite level) and happiness is ensured, then so fucking be it.
Gripes bitches and complaints are understandable, I dislike a couple of things about my favorite tools, and often wish certain features be involved in my particular tech stacks, does this make stuff bad? no, does it make me or anyone else less of a developer,? no so why give a fuck? bitch when shit bites you in the ass when someone does not know what the fuck they are doing with a language that permits writing bullshit. Which to be honest ALL of them fucking allow. Not one is saved from this. But NOT knowing how to work a solution, or NOT understanding a tech stack does not give you AUTOMATIC FULL insight on how x technology operates, thinking as such is so fucking arrogant and annoying.
But I am getting tired of looking at posts from Timmy, a 18 year old "dev" from whothefuckcares bitch about shit when they have never even made a fucking penny out of their "development" endeavors just because they read some dickhead's opinion on the internet regarding x tech stack and believes that adopting their bullshit troll ass virgin ideas makes them l337.
Get your own fucking opinion on things, be aggressive and stand fucking straight, maybe get some fucking pussy(or dick, whatever) and for fucks's sake learn to interact with other fucking human beings, take a fucking run, play games, break out from your whinny bitch ass shell, talk to that person that intimidates you, take a run, do yoga, martial arts anything that would break you out from being such a small little bitch.
Just fucking do something that keeps you from shitting on people 24/7 365/ a year.
We used to bitch about incompetent managers, shit bosses, fucking ludicrous assignments. Retarded shit that some other dev did, etc, etc. Seems like every other fucking retard getting into this community starts with stupid ass JS/PHP/Python/Java/C#/ whatever jokes and you idiots keep upvoting that shit. Makes those n00bs gain credability. Fuck me shit is so pathetic.
basically, make dev rant great again.
No fuck off and have a beer, or tea or whatever y'all drink.13 -
I just cant fucking believe this bullshit!
THE PRODUCT YOU'RE ASKING FOR NOW ITS NOT THE PRODUCT WE AGREED ON MAKING. ALL THE ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY AND CHANGES YOU WANT TAKE TIME!
I can't believe how rude can people be! We were supposed to stop working in this product MONTHS ago but you keep asking for changes, for additional things and then you yell at us just because we dont have it ready for yesterday?! You got some fucking balls man just fuck off. You have to understand the development process, every change you ask for can have consecuences that make us rewrite a bunch of code and we also need to test everything again and again to make sure it works! Gimme a break!4 -
Let's do photorealism they said,
It'll look beautiful they said,
...
...
...
NO!
Fuck it, we're going with low poly. I'm not rendering one fucking tree, for three god damn hours!
(That's presuming that it doesn't crash during that period)
And yes I know it doesn't actually look that photorealistic, but hey, give me a break I just started. Plus I don't even wanna know how long it would take to render if it was done to look really fancy.13 -
Last Wednesday and Thursday were public holidays. Took leave on Friday and now at a resort beside a dam/lake. Now chilling with booze and snacks in a wooden tent. Life can't be better.
Morale of the story is Programming is not your life. Take a break.8 -
Yes yes yes
Let's spend countless hours writing painful spaghetti that generates a financial report, extend that spaghetti for specs, then not bother to check the amounts or status. or where it says the money went. Nope, checking non-unique names is totally good enough. We're so good at this. Ten points to the legendaries.
Let's also make the object factories not create the objects correctly, and make sure that report includes entries for orders that don't include any actual payments. Oh, their status? "Ready to send" of course! Let's send that totally valid $0.00 to nobody!
Oh, but Root. Root, root, root. You can't ADD payments to this. no no no. if you do, it'll break specs everywhere else that uses that factory! Shame on you for suggesting it.
Pssh, now you want to make a payment just for this report? Why would you do that? Our best devs have been working on this for years! What could you possibly know that they don't? No, they're perfect. Don't touch them. Just make them better, okay? No take, only throw!5 -

Biggest distraction while working?
Management.
-> Get ticket to work on. Put an estimate and start working.
-> Management Guy #1: Hey could u please look into... this and that?
-> Management Guy #2: Hey could u please update me on (Old ticket that was fixed and updated on Jira but they would rather ask me in person).
-> Management Guy #3: Do you want to come outside for a smoke break, I know our last one was about half an hour ago but still, just 5 mins won't hurt your day.
-> Co-worker: Hey could you help with this task I am working on? I swear it won't take more than 5 mins. (It takes about an hour).
-> Miss my deadline for the ticket and get flamed for it by manager.
Okay, I didn't mean to say anything about co-workers as a distraction. It's very minimal.6 -
OMFG! Who’s bright fucking horrible stupid ass idea was it to mix Ajax with php (php deciding the ajax paths) with random js outputting HTML inside random fucking static divs found no where near the logical route of content.
Trying to add a simple fucking status to a gigantic cluster fuck of a legacy project is just FUCK.
If I could I would burn this bitch to the ground and start again I would, But no, it’s needed.
Someone kill me before I break the shit out of this thing, I would take a wordpress project right now instead. -
Finally finished the basic stuff on my website!
Now i'm gonna take a break and play some video games.
And thanks to @Alice for the dark/light theme switch.

I come from a front facing retail background. And I start my first developer job on Monday. It is also fully remote. They said I can take mental breaks whenever And unlimited pto as long as I use it wisely and don’t abuse the hell out of it. It’s a small company of like 75 people. They don’t want us working past business hours unless it’s urgent and something breaks.
Im like “uh what? You’re not going to yell at me for taking a 5 minute break after a homeless meth head screams at me and waives a wooden sword at me trying to hit me?”
It just feel like this is a grown up job. Like a professional job. I feel like I have work ptsd from being mistreated in the work place for 8 years. It doesn’t feel real. Does anyone else feel like this?9 -
Don’t work from exact place you eat everyday or sleep or entertain.
If you can’t focus set timer from 15 minutes to 1 hour and do something else that is not engaging your brain the same way your work does.
Go for a walk.
Take a break from electronic devices.
Take a shower.
Take a nap.
Take a dump.
Make a list of things todo before you eat.
Make groceries.
Clean your house a little.
Make a laundry.
Any manual labor helps if you need brain muscles for thinking.7 -
This Twitter Bot will make you addicted to Books.
That is the title I came up for this post.
Anyway I just wrote a new Twitter Bot that when tweeted the name of the book that you last read, it will reply back with a related book suggestion.
Feel free to take it for a spin and share your interesting finds. I know you will try to break it :)12 -
I like complainers... So... Someone who works 9-6 (and is often late by half hour and leaves at 6 sharp also takes extended lunch break) complained to my manager that I'm late for work , which I am , no denying , but , I take no lunch break and I work until 7:30-8 . Why on planet earth would you even care to make a complaint about someone whose manager you don't even know ? What the fuck kind of a person even does that ?! No one in my office has any kind of direct interaction with me , no idea of the work I do yet someone found it fitting to complain . Anyway , manager didn't even listen to the guy so I'm good...just pissed at haters .6

Worst things about being a dev? Boy, this will be a long one!
- Whatever I do, be it hard work or smart work, I feel I am always underpaid.
- Most people who don't know tech feel my job shouldn't take that long. "Oh, a website that should be easy." "Oh, REST services, that's cute!"
- Most people who know a little tech will be like, "Here is the code for this on Google, then why are you charging this much"
- Companies like Microsoft and Apple who are too cool to follow standards.
- Always underpaid!
- The friggin compilers and random environment vars. Sometimes you make no change and the code works on a restart. I mean wtf!
- Having to give/meet deadlines, when we know most of the times things get out of control.
- Having to work for jerks mostly who don't know squat, and can't tell the difference between a CPU and a Wooden box.
- Sometimes I wanna take a break from my laptop(traveling and stuff) , those are the times I get the maximum work load!
- Did I mention we are always underpaid?
- Because of the kind of work I do, finding a girl has been challenging. Where the heck are they!
- We have to stay always updated. Often we deploy something using a framework and the next day we see an update.
- Speaking of updates, I hate having to support for OSes like Microsoft.
- Speaking of OSes, I hate Apple!
- Speaking of Apple, I feel we are underpaid, de javu?
...
How much would you hate me if I wrote "just kidding" ?3 -
A discussion about writing tests for frontend applications.
Context: my frontend coworkers don't write tests, at all. Yeah, really. Our testing process is very manual. We test manually when developing. We test manually when reviewing code. After merging, the application is deployed to a staging server and the design team does a QA Sprint. Lots of manual testing and some bugs still crawl by.
So I decided to start pushing my coworkers to start writing tests. One of the reasons I constantly hear them say to not write tests in the frontend is: "It's not worth the time, because design keeps changing, which means we have to take time to fix the tests. Time that we usually don't have."
I've been thinking about this a lot and it seems to me that this is more related to bad tests than to tests in general.
Tests should not break with design changes (small changes at least). They should test funcionality, not how things look. A form should not break if the submit button's style changes, so why should its tests fail? I also think that tests help save time, as they prevent some back and forth because of bugs.
Writing good tests is the hard part. Tests that cover what's really important and aren't frail and break with things that shouldn't break them. What (and how) should we test? And what shouldn't be tested?
Writing them fast is another hard thing. Are you doing it right if they take more time to write than the actual code?
What do you think about this? Do you write tests for your frontend applications? What do you test? How much time do you spend writing tests? What are your testing tools/frameworks?6 -
Was on a call today...nobody knew who owned or was responsible for one of the servers. My manager has a great way of finding out...he says "If I take my hammer and smash the server to pieces...who gets pissed." A moment of silence then someone speaks up..."Oh well then that would be Joe down the hall."
That my friends is how to get answers. Threaten to break things.5 -
Here it is: get MythTV up and running.
In one corner, building from source, the granddaddy Debian!
In the other, prebuilt and ready to download, the meek but feisty Xubuntu!
Debian gets an early start, knowing that compiling on a single core VM won't break any records, and sends the compiler to work with a deft make command!
Xubuntu, relying on its user friendly nature, gets up and running quickly and starts the download. This is where the high-bandwidth internet really works in her favor!
Debian is still compiling as Xubuntu zooms past, and is ready to run!
MythTV backend setup leads her down a few dark alleys, such as asking where to put directories and then not making them, but she comes out fine!
Oh no! After choosing a country and language the frontend commit suicide with no error message! A huge blow to Xubuntu as this will take hours to diagnose!
Meanwhile, Debian sits in his corner, quietly chugging away on millions of lines of C++...
Xubuntu looks lost... And Debian is finished compiling! He's ready to install!
Who will win? Stay tuned to find out!4 -
I’m a team lead in the tech team, myself and another team lead manage the on call processes for the department, so when stuff breaks we need to fix it. I assume there is sufficient documentation available for me to fix a process that is not mine.
one of the other managers processes breaks. He’s on annual leave and is away for another week. I attempt to fix the process. No documentation. What do i do?
I go to my manager the next day and tell her the process is broken and I can’t fix it because there’s no documentation and I don’t know what the full impacts are. She agreed we should leave it until he comes back from AL.
He comes back a week later. I tell him the process is broken and it’s been failing since he went on AL.
Him: we had a handover before I went on holiday
Me: no, you showed me where the ‘documentation’ was. Said documentation is not defined enough and is out of date. I didn’t want to break it further by trying to repair it when it’s not completely critical
Him: but it is critical, it has to run every day
Me: so why doesn’t it say that in the documentation?
Him: ............
Me: can you fix it please
Him: no, I’ve got too much to do having just come back from holiday
Me: more critical that a process that has to run EVERY DAY and has been failing for the past 10 DAYS??
Him: I’ll see if I have time
2 hours later...
Him: Lets put in some time for handover so you can understand the process. Is an hour long enough?
Me: I don’t know, you tell me, it’s your process, you know what’s involved and how long it should take to explain
Him: well is an hour long enough?
Me: I don’t know, it takes however long it takes you to explain it
Him: I’m asking you
...........
At this point I’m getting more and more angry, how can you not know how long your process is gonna take to explain when you’re the one that wrote it?! I fully well know that it’s gonna take longer than an hour because it’s an SSIS package that looks like a plate of spaghetti, you spend 15 minutes working out what box flows to where before even looking at any SQL, and he’s still asking me how long it’s gonna take and distracting me from my ACTUAL critical work
Man is a waste of space, so quick to give you work that isn’t his but never takes responsibility for his own... honestly have no clue whatsoever how he became a manager....
This rant doesn’t seem like much reading it back but I swear it’s the last in a looooonnngggg like of his fuck ups that other people have had to deal with 🙄🙄3 -
This is my first rant with image, I was taking break and decided to read Android apps comments/reviews. So I picked this app call "Calculator", developed by Google.
Take a look at the second comments from the screenshot. It is beyond User Error...5 -
Honestly, nothing kills your brain cells faster than doing the same repetitive tasks at work, day in and day out. It’s like I'm just on autopilot—pushing buttons, running scripts, rinse, repeat. At some point, I start wondering if I’m a dev or just a glorified robot.
And to keep my sanity intact? Competitive programming. Yeah, that’s how I free my mind—throwing myself into algorithmic problems during my break time, just to remind myself that there’s more to life than the mundane loop of tasks at work. I’ll take an NP-hard problem over this any day. At least that makes me think.6 -
People around me be like "Why you never take a break?? I see you work all the time. Doesn't your company offer you a paid holiday??"
Yeah they do offer a paid holiday, but even on holiday I still have to work because I'm the IT manager, full stack developer, database admin, helpdesk and everything that is related to IT.
:(26 -
To long to read. So don’t do it.
I feel disappointed. It’s not about job or stuff. I’m disappointed about world in general. I don’t see my future on this planet anymore.
The world more or less looks like that :
Politics are trying to help you by stealing more money from you. The more you’re lucky the more money you will pay for it.
Media punch you with some family stuff from everywhere, give you young rich and far away, beautiful picture photos of places, people and food that you at most could visit once or twice per year during holidays that are break from work concentration camps.
If you’re lucky you’re rich or got rich or wealthy and infamous so you can walk wherever you want and don’t give a fuck what you wear but again your old friends are not so lucky bastards so you need to find new friends that are probably assholes. At the end most of the days you you’re doing nothing except killing time to meet with people you like during weekends or evenings.
Then there are families and everyone want to tell you that’s important. Family is like herd of assholes, if you’re weak they will sacrifice you and tell that you’re looser behind your back but when you get wealthy they will come back to tell you that when you were young and stupid they played with you so now you have to buy them some stuff or get them a job.
At the end there are people with “I wrote that book” certificate of excellence try to sell you opinions on everything starting from sexual positions ending on how to take a good dump. The problem is that the moment they wrote that book it becomes obsolete. Teachers of useless knowledge from last century that forgot about google or wikipedia.
All of them are playing your emotions, cause impulses and hormones are what makes you weak and people are looking for your weaknesses to take advantage of you. Get your money or get your attention and maybe even both at the same time. Cause views matter you know it. So like and subscribe dumb fucks.
If you’re lucky you find couple of them who aren’t doing that. Who the fuck knows why but this shit happens. It doesn’t matter if they’re family or you met them month ago. Those are only to keep and hardest to find. Unluckily those also can change by other people they meet or when they’re young.
If you can’t find a friend get a dog or cat or whatever animal you like. Their love is unconditional and obvious to read.
Well that’s most of the “I want to be spotted” culture that is all boring as fuck. Personalized ass and glamorous pictures and short movies of everything you don’t need but looks awesome. And as you see it’s still growing with more specialized portals like onlyfans, twitch and tiktok. We all need to look at what everyone else have or want to have cause 99% of time 99% of us are boring and is bored as fuck. Most of us can repeat same small amount set of stories all their life cause we’re not created to entertain.
I don’t feel joy looking at this shit fucked full of shit people arguing who’s dick is bigger. Who can post most dumb thing. I think I need a break but how to break from everything ? How to break from culture of money where to live on your country land you need to pay property tax ?
That’s all fucked up. Life’s fucked up.24 -

Don't panic and break up your big problem into smaller problems and solve them in a logical cadence.
Also, when you go home at night...turn off man. If you take your work home with you, you will go mental.1 -
After I picked up cooking, I dialed in a classic Russian pancakes recipe of my grandma (the babushka) and made it sugar-free. I cook those pancakes for my wife every Saturday, and she says they taste heavenly.
So, here’s the recipe of kiki’s pancakes:
- 8 eggs, 150g of 82% butter, 300g of flour, baking powder, 800ml of 3.2% fat milk. If you have a blender, it’ll make things easier
- let them sit and make all of them the same temperature
- take 8 eggs, add milk, stir
- liquify the butter in the microwave, add, stir
- sift the flour in while stirring continuously
- let it sit for 30 minutes
- take a pan, add little butter or sunflower seed oil, make it scary hot
- after you pour, flip the pancake when its top gets dry
to flip them easily, spread pastry wide when pouring, overlapping frying pan edges. Then, use those edges (now bone dry) to flip the pancake. After you’re done, those edges (now almost black) will break away, leaving a perfect pancake. This works especially well if you don’t have a good non-stick frying pan.
enjoy!8 -
That moment you receive your salary but decide to hold off paying your dues for a few hours just to take a break from being poor 🙄

Have an 'anger' project open to the side, so when you get annoyed or tired of the paid work, take a quick break and jump into that project to clear your head, even if it is just a simple command line tool, done it before and it's quite a good thing from experience

I need a hobby or someone to yell at me until I take a break from working all day every day.
Then again if I had a home office I probably wouldn't need to put in 12 hours to get 6 hours of work done.
But I still need something to do besides work and family. And someone to kick my butt until I do it and relax.9 -
why do i have an iphone?
well, let's start with the cons of android.
- its less secure. this isn't even arguable. it took the fbi a month or something (i forget) to break into an ios device
- permission, permissions, permissions. many of the android apps i use ask for the not obscure permissions.
· no, you don't need access to my contacts
· no, you don't need access to my camera to take notes
· no, you don't need access to my microphone to send messages
· no, you don't need access to my saved passwords to be a functioning calculator
- not being able to block some apps from an internet connection
- using an operating system created and maintained by an advertising company, aka no more privacy
- i like ios's cupertino more than material design, but that's just personal preference
pros of ios:
- being able to use imessage, at my school if you don't have an iphone you're just not allowed to be in the group chat
- the reliability. i've yet a data loss issue
- the design and feel. it just feels premium
- if i could afford it, ios seems like a lot of fun to develop for (running a hackintosh vm compiled a flutter app 2x as fast as it did on not-a-vm windows)
so that's why i like iphones

not universal, but works for me:
1. start listening to long video/podcast/talkshow i'm interested in
2. (optional) think about all the physical things i should do, such as cleaning the house, running errands, etc. conclude "nah, i'd rather stay at the computer".
3. open the project i'm working on, thinking "while i listen, i might as well muck about with this for a bit". the key is for the thought to be duration-indeterminate and non-commital, so it feels like an idea for a voluntary idle activity.
4. start mucking around with the project, starting with the simplest smallest tasks, to slowly shift my focus away from what i'm listening to, so it gradually becomes the background thing as the work gets into foreground of my concentration without me even noticing. this also naturally shifts me towards the more important and complicated tasks in the project
5. naturally lose track of time, realizing i've been working for 2 to 3 hours without break only after what i'm listening to ends (sometimes not even then)
6. at that point, take a break, stretch my legs, get some food, watch some 20-30 minute thing with full attention.
7. find a new long-form mostly audio thing to listen to, and go to step 4. repeat.
8. i found i can work like this 8 to sometimes 20 hours straight in a nice atmosphere, without feeling like i spent the time working with all the mental exhaustion it brings, instead it feeling like "i was listening to interesting/entertaining things and mucking around with some stuff on the side", with all the feeling of "i've been idling the whole time" except the work is actually done, or at least i made a progress. it feels almost like procrastinating except without the guilt because i can see i've done a lot through that time. kind of a good compromise between total procrastination and working your ass off into complete anxiety/depression2 -
So I had this internship in highschool for some marketing company creating simple databases for them to help out with their business.
When I came back from college for I think winter break they had asked if I would come in to help with a task that was going to take all day so they wanted me to come early. I agree and show up the next morning.
They had an Excel spreadsheet with about 5000 records in it and one of the fields was the name of the customer. They told me that the records came in as lastName, firstName or as lastName, firstName.
They wanted the field to look like firstName lastName. For a minute or two they had someone show me how they have been doing this which was just by hand. I don't really work with Excel so im not too keen with the macros. But it took me about 1 Google and 30 seconds to find someone with a similar macro to achieve this, I altered it a bit and let it go through all the records.
It was an awesome feeling when I went to the boss to let them know I was done (it had only been 10 mins), they almost didnt believe me.
Funny how one line of code can turn a day's work into a matter of minutes.2 -
Tech Lead: We need to exclude logged in user from our all users API as we don't want to show user's self card on the frontend with other users.
Me (Backend dev): This should be handled by the frontend and they should exclude it by a condition in their loop:
If (user.id != loggedUser.id)
{
// Add card
}
We also need self user at several other places.
Tech Lead: Create a query param filter for that.
Me: We should keep our APIs as generic as possible.
(Real thing starts)
Tech Lead: Which has more processing power frontend or backend?
Me (confused): Backend
Tech Lead: This will add a break to our loop and Do you know how much processing power it will take because of this condition?
Me (dead): WHAAAA....?18 -
I really like it when I work at home cus I know it's very productive.
I'd be working for 30 mins then I tell myself to take a break...
I scroll through facebook then I'm reminded of reddit... and then google plus.. and then podcasts.. and then youtube videos... then I proceed to discover the far reaches of the internet.............. OH NO1 -
Unfortunately, I was causing the bad experience of the group project.
Had a 3D modelling class at university. I was totally overwhelmed and had no time to do anything for the project. I was too scared to face my team so I decided to just break the contact and didn't show up to the presentation.
I thought I would get a bad grade and that I will have to take the class the next year again.
But the worst part is, I got a better grade than the rest of the team because someone did the part, I was responsible for, so well.
I felt so bad for my behaviour, I cut my hair and shaved and hoped they won't recognize me at the university.
I'm sure there are or will be some rants about me this week -.-'3 -
Please take sleep deprivation seriously!
Take care of it and don't allow stress to take you over.
Here's a little story of what happened to me:
I've had sleep problems for all of my life, but the beginning of last summer 2018 it went too far. I turned 18 and somehow all the school, dev and personal work started to pile up, I stressed about them and started to have no sleep every other day and little sleep another. Immediately I took time off from everything for trying get better sleep.
Having no sleep means that your brain starts to run in really low gear but you might not even notice it. So I started stressing about every little detail, making ridiculous decisions and doing stuff that didn't really make any sense.
I went to a doctor and was ordered to take time off for a month or so and start medication with bunch of different pills. At the time I thought the medication could wait for a day and went to an old work friend's place for night stay to discuss about everything. That wasn't obviously the thing I should've done. I was up all of that night, he slept, and in the morning he noticed something was really a bit off about me.
We went to the hospital and I agreed for a treatment in there. They got me to sleep normally again and I rested there for a while. I went back home or actually my parents' place and the problems continued, and back to the hospital I go. This time there was no choice. After a really long while, my mind started to stabilize enough that I was allowed to return to my everyday life: enjoying my summer break. It was an awful summer. I often felt lonely and bored. But at least I slept normally.
In the fall I returned to my usual busy schedule. And life's good again. This time I will manage my stress and sleep better and take them to account when planning schedule.16 -
The only bad thing about running Linux is that I don't have an excuse to take a break while my computer installs updates. :(3

1. take a web application working in somebody computer since 4 years with tons of features.
2. Believe that the application is the future and solve brilliantly a general market need.
3. multiply income of current only customer by 10: you are going to be rich.
3. start to install 2, 3 customers.
4. discover the application is shit. Doesn't solve well the problem. Functionalities are different for each customer
5. discover that customers are willing to pay 1/10th of the original customer
6. quickly reingeneer the application to a multitenant cloud application, because with 3 customers and different versions you are already in deep shit
7. keep giving away the application for free to flagship customers. With a lot of customisation developed for free.
8. reach 200 customers in 5 years and still no break even, but lot of debts
9. resort to financial tricks to keep the company going
Luckily money are not mine. They could be recovered.
Unluckily the time spent was mine. It couldn't be recovered
Hope that the application will finally crash so that I can move on to the next thing: retirement in a mental asylum -
I started the weekend saying i wanna code some personal projects. Its sunday and u know what, fuck no. Sure we love to code but we are still human gonna go sit in a jakuzi and swim a little tonight. We need to relax every now and then. So if ur feeling theres a lot of shit u need to do... take a break. Seriously everyone needs it2

Just don't open it...
Will definitely not pretend to be productive 24/7. But the below help me reach a satisfactory 8/5 most day's.
- Exercise in the morning
- Eat breakfast
- Listen to good music
- Make sure to have fun moments throughout the workday (++ for initiating)
- Catch air, have a walk, take a break
- Minimize interactions with toxic people
- Be open in sharing knowledge, thoughts, work , good people will repay you
- Get in the kitchen, cook nice healthy meals
- Set concrete and reachable targets
- Remain eager to learn
- Celebrate successes
- Spent time with friends and family
- Catch enough sleep
And above all, DON'T open devRant!!! -
Employer: Hey, we are moving an API update live tomorrow morning that could affect our apps. Can you regression test the apps to make sure they all work?
Me: The API team is pushing code overtop of live endpoints that can break them?
Employer: Yes, we need the updates to work with a new product we are developing.
Me: And nobody thought about versioning these endpoints so we guarantee uptime on all existing services using them now?
Employer: We looked at that but it cost extra and required us to use the cloud solution so we don’t use versioning.
Me: Okkk… I also take it that the API’s don’t have integration tests written?
Employer: What are integration tests? Are unit tests the same thing?
Me: No, so when do I need to regression test all 7 production apps?
Employer: The API’s are moving to production at 4am and we need it signed off by 7am.
Me: I only have 3 hours to regression test 7 production apps at 4am? Each app, if I just skim over them, would take me 2 hours each. I will do my best but that’s a very short time to ensure complete functionality.
Employer: Don’t you have unit tests?1 -
Other programming languages and cleaning puppy shit.
Situation:
I'm coding in C# and take a coffee break, upon taking this break, I see something on devRant, Stack Overflow, or even just a random thought comes to mind.
Two hours later.
Written various snippets of code in JAVA, C++, PHP, JS - and have done nothing to do with my initial work.
In the above, I have cleaned puppy shit at least 10 times.1 -
!rant, probably, even though kind of yes, but not overt
i just realized something: software doesn't take lot of effort and time to change because it would be difficult to make a change.
it takes lot of effort and time to change because making the change is easy, but inspecting and debugging what other things the change affects takes most of the time and effort.
it would be nice if project managers were able to wrap their head around this.
tl;dr i can make the change right now in 5 minutes, but it's going to take me an hour to check if me changing that didn't break something else.8 -

We had a Christmas party at work. We did a traditional white elephant gift game. I stole some larping swords from one guy, somebody else stole them from me, and another guy named Bilbo stole them and ended up with them.
After the party I am at my desk. Bilbo comes over with the swords and gives them to me. He said, "You looked like you really wanted these." I said thank you. I was really touched by that gesture.
Bilbo had tried to get golf balls during the game and lost them. So I went to the store at lunch today and got him a 12 pack of Titleists for $25. I don't golf, but people I work with say they are good. I left these on his desk. He comes to me later and says, "I cannot accept these. It is just too much money." I said its not too much and explained I was touched by his gesture. He tells me to take them back and get something nice for myself. Which is another nice gesture. Bilbo said when we get back from Christmas break we can do lunch.
So I am a bit baffled. Did I cross a line I shouldn't cross? Is Bilbo just too nice? I was really hoping he would enjoy this. I get it. We are coworkers and not family. I truly respect and like the guy.
Anyway, I am unsure what to do with them. I didn't really want to take them back. I tried to give them to another guy I work with and he wouldn't take them either. One talked about paying for them then decided he didn't want them. I have more shopping to do so I can take them back then. It kind of weirds me out to say $25 is too much money. I can hardly go a day without spending that much on a couple of random small things.9 -
As much fun it is to code and create new features for users. Take a break from the computer and spend time with real people.
A few years ago I would stay at work to get tasks done. While everyone in the office would go home I would stay and finish some task. After doing that for a few months my wife started to yell at me.
It made me realize that no matter how important a new feature, a bug or optimizing code is family and the relationships you have are more important.4 -
Fuck pep8 in general. Fuck harder anything to do with line limits. Fuck with a rusty spatula those who tie it into their git precommits or CI tests.
What's that, it's 2018 and even the shittiest walmart-tier computers have 1080p OR BETTER at a 16:9 aspect ratio?
"lol, 80 character line limit."
Eat a bucket of rancid dicks.
Oh, and since we're forcing you to be so economical with your characters, we're going to force four space tabs. Yknow, rather than simple single tab characters, which could mean everyone can set their preferred level of spacing without bloating the code with whitespace.
Because, yknow, it's entirely reasonable to chew up 1/8 of a line because you're editing a function inside a class definition. God Almighty forbid you try to do a for loop inside that function! Fuck you!
"Oh but you can't have two editors or terminals open side by side without that limit!"
BULL FUCKING SHIT. Here's my shitty 1280x1024 display on my shitty computer with two Sublime editors open side by side. You'll notice the break is at 100 characters. You'll notice I don't have to scroll horizontally to do two things at once. You'll notice I even have room for COMMENTS!
If your code standards require you to make your code *less* readable and *less* clear and take up *more* space to accomplish the same tasks, YOUR CODE STANDARDS SUCK!
Enough with this stupid meme. We're not in the 80s anymore and it's high time to start fucking acting like it.7 -
Today
I was working on a project for the uni, went to have a nap and take a break.
The problem I was coding java in my dream.
I WANT A BREAK!!!!!!!!!! -
Basically everything. Let me explain.
It's now.. okay what time is it? Ooh there's some dust on the clock, I wonder how do they form.. I guess I'll check Wikipedia. Page is loading, might as well scroll fb while waiting. Ooh a video on the home feed! Oh wait it's loading, I wonder what's on YouTube. Ugh, ads, let's just mute it and scroll devRant. Oh cool there's something called Google FooBar challenge, imma try searching Arraylist Java. Nice, lv1 done, let's take a break by getting a drink from the fridge.
*Walks back to room after drinking a sip of orange juice* hmm.. what time is it? Oh it's late, imma go to sleep!
*Shuts down everything and goes to bed* Maybe I'll just browse devRant before sleeping.. Ooh I have an idea for wk51!1 -
Creator of the react router:
If you ever see this, you created one of the greatest library with one of the worst documentation ever.
And don't get me started with versions. In every single versions, you break everything so badly and nothing works anymore.
Everytime I need to do something related to react router, I just fucking roll on the floor and cry. Documentation is fucked up.
It's totally fucked up. In the github there's one documentation, in the website there's a different. At the end, nothing works.
Please, if you want to create a nice library like this, maintain it. If you can't maintain it, mark it as deprecated and someone will take over.
But keeping something like this and making it absolutely inconsistent doesn't help. I am really tired of debugging bugs related to react-router2 -
Me: actually trying to finish a project for once (I’m REALLY close)
People that bitch I never finish one: You should make [Enter this idea], or why don’t you just take a break from that and work on another or this one4 -
So my brother went back to school today. Now, during the 5 years I was there they had the most shit security on their IT systems, but aparently now they have fucked up their ssl. If you try to load the https page it comes up with the warning saying its an invalid certificate, but once you click it, it doesn't even load the school website, it loads this random page. Clicking on the buttons then take you to a page under their domain provided by another school. Going to this schools website, the https seems to be broken in the exact same way. It wouldnt be so bad, but it can confuse the hell out of people who type https before a url, and thos who dont realise and end up on the insecure site will need to provide passwords over an insecure connection. I am so glad im out of that place, they had such crap IT and everything was so easy to break.1

In "Sprint Planning", the team is supposed to come up with stories, break those down into tasks, estimate those tasks as a team, then let devs choose what tasks they want to work on based on the stories pulled into that particular sprint.
Instead, our manager creates the stories. He assigns the stories to each developer and then has that developer announce his theoretical tasks (without any research on feature's or project's requirements!) in front of the entire team. So, when I say, "I think it will take me 6 hours to implement this feature", he says, "6 hours? I think it will take 3." and then types the estimate as 3. I have so much rage when that happens. Then we continue to sit in the room for 2.5 hours where we go through this long data entry mess of him typing out tasks and second guessing estimates. There is no team deliberation or collaboration, its whatever the manager says.
While there are many issues I take with this approach, my pet peeve would be the second guessing of the estimates. It would make sense for teams members to second guess estimates as long as they are the same teammates who have the ability and possibility to take on the tasks themselves.
But I disagree with a manager seconding guessing an implementation feature that "I" definitely have to do alone, and they do not possess the immediate knowledge to implement it themselves.5 -
I cannot even function right now with how angry I am. If you're a python developer, don't take offence to this unless it describes you.
All the python devs I have ever met so far are pompous arrogant cucks that can't even get out of their own way to save themselves. They make EVERYTHING so fucking complicated and complex that the whole point to a project becomes moot.
Instead of understanding HOW a thing works, their answer is ALWAYS rewrite it how THEY want it to work.
They have what we used to call "little-man" syndrome. They're so concerned that they aren't perceived as intelligent that they overcompensate by making the wildest and most fucked up changes to a project I have EVER seen.
They have gone so far as to break the original functional components of a project just to meet THEIR definition of a healthy python project.
I don't hate the language, but GOD DAMN I HATE THE DEVS.
If this describes you, fuck you. Seriously, just fuck off into whatever python hole you crawled out of and stay there.6 -
Hot Take:
Subscription based products are exactly why we don't see major break-throughs in software anymore.
*** I am warning you, don't mention AI in the comments, I am gonna fucking lose it. ***
Tell me one thing, If you spent thousands to create a product that you now have a good subscriber base on, why would you invest money into making another? Why wouldn't you just consider improving the product at hand and selling it to more people to create additional profit?
In the 90s we used to get any software on CDs/DVDs and you actually got to own it. Meaning that the company can only take money from you ONCE and never again (almost). This also meant that the companies knew that soon they'd have to come up with something else that will make them money, thus them creating new software every couple or so years, some even creating ground-breaking software.
But then, there is thing called MONOPOLY.
We will never get another music app than Spotify or Apple music, because they are just too far ahead. They're built on subscription model.
You can probably think of more examples of great companies building great products and moving them to subscription model and therefore never creating another software, because frankly, why take the risk to lose money when you can gain more money by improving the product at hand?
We will never get the same frequency of good games coming to market from established companies like RockStar. Why should they bothered to make GTA 6 when they can sell millions of worth of Shark Cards every month and rake in the profits?
Subscriptions have totally killed off software creativity and motivation for devs/companies to create great software.17 -
I haven't been productive since the bs. (Refer to previous rant) And one deadline is approaching very fast.
My Christmas was ruined because I was anxious/annoyed/everything negative about the bs as well as being alone and stuck in a village. My new year has always been crap but this year it was extra crap.
Overall, I'm having none of the fun. My life is starting to feel like a deadend. I feel like I have to give up on my dreams to survive. And that no one is really on my side, despite whatever they say.
The ADHD rejection sensitivity is also heavily activated. Like I know that realistically I can fix this, but at this point I just want to break everything and let the ship sink.
I have lost time that I could be productive to this bs. And I wish nothing but misery for all those responsible for putting me in this situation. (I take responsibility for my mistakes, but not for how others behaved towards me)6 -
Well, sure it’s nice to take a break from coding and visit some historical town. Here’s Cracow (Kraków) from today

Best way to avoid procrastination : We tend to avoid commitments or to do large tasks as even visualizing them seems tiring and the longer it takes, the vulnerable we are to distractions
So I use this simple trick
I break my task into numerous sub tasks. For example if I need to finish a feature before day end, I would first list down all the cases I can think of in order and write them down using actual pen and paper.
I then start implementing them step by step.
I mark them checked once done.
It gives me a sense of achievement as I see those checks besides the sub tasks and I can also take breaks between steps.
So all it takes is just first five minutes of planning.
I had to do the above procedure, for this post as well.
Hope it helps fellow developers
:) -
This week's huge fuck you goes to... Drumroll please...
Slack!
You earned this prize for your stupid auto-sleep if there is no interaction for x minutes!
I don't want to install your crap software on my system, so i am forced to alt tab every 15 minutes just to press space and then delete, because God forbids i am being productive on my freaking IDE, second computer, test device and/or meeting!
Also lovely how phone notifications are not sent on mobile unless you are on sleep mode... How could I ever ask for urgent notifications if i take a small break? Oh, right! I should go to sleep mode, so people will think i didn't touch your shitware for 30 mins every fucking time i go to the toilet! :D
Please get your prize whenever possible!12 -
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUUUCJKKK OOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF (wasted hours why im being redirected to 404 when trying to access a route thats being guarded (u need to login first to access it) only to find out i changed /login into /auth/login and forgot to update this bs into the guard so the guard was redirecting to /login which indeed doesnt exist and is a 404 instead of redirecting to /auth/login)
This is such a fucking dumb bug I have to take a fucking break im going outside for a jog and then intense home workout to unfuck my mind8 -
Best part about being a (intern) dev?
Has to be being able to eat when I want, get a drink when I want, take a break when I want. But most of all, the godly feeling of being able to dress like a slob and not having to care about looking like one.5 -
I run update without where on mysql console on production database Today.
CLASSIC
Just because I needed to fix database after bug fix on the backend of the application.
I thought I wrote good sql statement after executing it on my local machine and then everything got bad.
Luckily it was only one column with some cached statistics data and I checked that it was not important data before I actually started fixing stuff but still ...
Almost got hard attack afterwards.
Made a script to fix this column and it took me only 15 minutes but still...
Bug was caused in part I got no unit tests and application grow after 3 years of development from simple one for one customer and volumes of documents around 50k to over 40 customers and volumes over 2mil per month, don’t know how many pages each, just in one year after we completed all needed features.
I have daily backups and logs of every api operation but still.
I think this got to far for one backend developer.
I got scared that I will loose money cause I am contractor and the only backend developer working on it.
I am so tired of this right now I think I need a break from work.
Responsibility is killing me so hard right now.
It will take a week to get back to normal.2 -
PM wrote a really high-level requirement doc and asked me about estimates.
Me: Well, functionality-wise it will take 4-5 days provided the design is ready.
PM: Our designers are really full on schedule; Just do it! Expand your creativity. I believe in your taste of UX
Me: Listen, the implemented design will take much more time to change if we go back and forth. It's better to revise on the designer's screen.
PM: Oh don't be so modest! I trust you already. Just focus on the functionality, get it done first. For the design we'll talk about it later. Move fast and break things!
Me: ..Sigh. This is gonna end up badly.6 -
Day 2 of devWholesome...
Have another great day! Have fun and do something productive! It is always a great feeling when you finish something that requires a lot of time and effort. Finish that project that you started but never finished, clean your room, or maybe just catch up on school work! Make sure you are also taking care of yourself with your hygiene and to eat all your meals and drink plenty of water. If you are feeling stressed today, take a break and relax! And again, make the most out of your day!4 -
Being a junior myself before all I can say with others that came after me was:
- Keep your head down
- Don't take everything as an offense
- People are rude or angry, but that's just how we are: we deal with normal users' BS everytime that we just wanted a break.5 -
Work in the morning and here we are devRant, we have to quit doing this to ourselves. We need to take a break. I'm sorry, but you have consumed my life. The chuckles, feed refreshes, and +1s will be but treasured moments I have with you. Wait.. Who am I kidding? I need you! Don't leave, I'll stay with you forever.1
-
if I take my laptop home...shit will break.
if I don't...shit still breaks and I don't have a way to fix it.5 -
Got tangled up on some routing issue with my Rails project yesterday morning so I democratically decided I was allowed to take a break... I launched Diablo 3 and that was the rest of the day...
I just sat there dungeon crawling, eating pizza, ice cream and drinking Monster like a fucking pig... Shame on me. -
Took a week of PTO for a vacation because I'm pretty close to spent these days. Planning on getting in some kayaking and fishing I think, maybe some noodling on the guitar or read some Tolkien, as I really need to take a break from the computer and screens in general, and living in the latest COVID epicenter in the US I can do fuck all else.
I'm /really/ trying to force myself to ignore slack and work emails. I did all I could to leave my team prepared, and given that most are juniors who need A LOT of supervision since working remote, I fully anticipate having to fix everything and get shit back on track when I return next week. Telling myself it's inevitable so worrying about it now won't be any better than waiting till next week. LEARN TO READ CODE AND COMMIT HISTORY FUCKERS!
I know I have a full workload slated for the rest of the year and into Q1 21, so I know letting shit go for a little while is the best thing I can do for myself, and so that my family doesn't have to deal with me being a bastard all the damn time.3 -
First thought about programming was in forth class in school, I was 10, and together with a friend we where planing on building a robot.
When we had a basic Idea on how the mechanics would work (theoretically but maybe not really practically sound) we started to consider how to control it. We had heard about computers but had never seen one but we figured out you could not just say, “go shopping” but rather had to break the problem down and doing that we came to the conclusion we would have to start with getting it to take a step.
We never got further as my family moved and I switched schools.
Later the same year I got to play with an actual computer, the Sinclair ZX80, 80 for the year.
A monster with 512 bytes of internal memory ... yes bytes, not kbyte.
And then things got going, after a few curses in Basic I finally got my own Spectra video 128, 14 years old and 2 years later I was teaching basic in ravening classes and I have been working with computers and programming ever since.1 -
Hey, some of you might remember a rant I posted a few days back complaining about email scores.
Well, I finished the project I needed them for and thought someone might be interested to give feedback or try and break it.
Basically, it's intended as a solution for the absolute mess our school is in before parent conference days. We're talking 3 pieces of paper per student, meaning about 3000 sheets being wasted every half year.
The beta version of the website is hosted at https://laravel.privateger.me/.
Seriously, take this apart as harshly as possible please. I'm sure there are a ton of issues I haven't seen.
The website is in German, but it should be really easy to understand even without knowing it.
If you get banned by the small protection thingy I added, tell me, I'll clear that.

))| THE BEST AND WORST WAY|((
))| TO DELETE A LINE IN BASH |((
(Think you can do better? Vote
now on your phones!)
WORST: Hold backspace until satisfied
BEST: Using a pen or other pointing device capable of causing semi or permanent damage to your screen, count how many characters the line in question consists of. Write this down on a piece of paper (after all, your terminal is occupied) and using long division, or any other means, divide this number by two, rounding as you please. Press the "right arrow" key as many times as necessary to reach the end of the line. This might be 0 - if so, congratulations, you may skip this step! Once complete, refer to your piece of paper, and taking your newly calculated number, press the "left arrow" key exactly that many times. If you have a short attention span or are worried you will lose count, take a tally or use some other primitive count recording method. Once the key has been pressed the correct number of times, hold down either control key on your keyboard and take a deep breath - there's no going back now (!) - press the "k" key (you should still be holding a control key!) and take a sigh of relief. You're halfway there! If you need a break, take one. When you're ready to finish the task, hold a control key again and take another deep breath. When you are ready to complete the task (don't hold your breath too long!) press the "w" key. Congratulations!! Your line has been deleted!! Some may call you a fucking idiot for not just pressing ctrl-w at the start, but don't listen to those people! They probably delete stuff by accident all the time! Now, take a lie down, and give a moment's silence for the poor poor line you just brutally dissected and murdered.
Think you can do better? Vote now on your phones!9 -
Work on a Python mapping project, get everything right except changing color of points on the map. Take a long break on that project, come back and realize I made a capitalization error 😂😂

Just had a first meeting with a customer who wants me to upgrade their system that a company spent one year making. He gave me the .exe and was surprised I couldn't just edit it.
He was cool about it when I explained, but it's tough to break it to someone how much more time it will take than they had anticipated. -
Going on a road trip and brought my laptop with me, I’m gonna take a small break from my project and test some stuff and learn some libraries, also gonna sit outside and just enjoy everything.2

Some internet security officers (working for the government on internet privacy related stuff) tells the media that they can decrypt your Facebook credentials in less than 7 seconds.
Everyone let's take a break to laugh at these morons hahaha4 -
When you type 'git facebook' in your browser and need a couple of seconds to figure out what's wrong with it, it might be a sign to take a break and go on a holiday far from any computers. Good thing I have next week off...

Imagine an intelligent platform where creators are rewarded for launching and completing open source projects and groups of people teaming up to set up open source factories , implementing top level optimizations . There will ofcourse be judges who can earn a basic income from the platform as well . I don't want to go into too much details.
The platform could offer products as well with a modular backend . So for example this platform could have an mobile OS with a maps app on it . What the platform should do is adopt the best map algorithm to the application at certain intervals .
Product stays constant , open source power behind it changes and promotes competition .
Factories, products , space tech, open source labs which require certain reputation to get in ......
It's very ambitious but sounds like the way the future should take off . Companies and politics would be off picture down the line and maybe even terrorism will take a break . After all it's everyone together .
Oh and ofcourse it would have a search engine for sure.2 -
Meetings.. Was I not listening? Blame it on the ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
Maybe society has AEHD (Attention Expected Hyper-Delusion).
Seriously, who can pay attention to someone speaking AT you.
We have amazing magical devices one can enchant to do their bidding; Contemplating the details of such, often, is more enjoyable than what your rambling on about, talking head.
Not sorry, ;).
Also THANK YOU, you amazing MIT's (Manager of Information Technologies). A lot of you understand and even may use your underling employee's as a vented heat sync for your frustrations. I love what you do and thank the universe I don't have to engage myself in those activities. I have sympathy for the decision to give up your jeans and t-shirts for business attire; keep strong, your role is vital. <3
The insomnia is going to have to give me a break. Work in 3 hrs, time for a nap; and no, I don't take ADD medication (Amphetamine). I don't need a prescription; I can procure my own drugs, thank you.
Nor would I do them to get through work, that's drug abuse.5 -
God I hate it when devs complain about not having a decent job 😠 And then they're like "Oh, I've been looking for the past 6 months, but every company just ignores me"
Look, hate to be the one to break it to you, but companies are constantly searching for devs, and many companies have such shortage of quality devs, they'll take just about anyone with even remotely relevant skills as long as they have a decent attitude. If you can't find a decent job in this market, well, it's either that nobody needs a dev who spent the last 10 years doing basic UI and simple NodeJS apps, or they don't want a dev who loudly shits on new technologies while acting like their GitHub profile is impressive enough.3 -
Last few months have been quite calm. Nothing to really rant about. The egocentric asshole PM (see my past rants) left the company, so things have been better at work. I thought that there would be so much chaos because of all the roles that he had (project manager, engineering manager, lead developer, dev ops) but we managed to keep things running smoothly, which shouldn't have been a surprise for me, but I was a bit scared at first. Relieved, because well... the egocentric asshole left, but a bit scared either way. Anyway, everything has been fine. I'm pretty much the lead frontend developer now, even tho there's no official structure or hierarchy, everyone just keeps looking up to me for help and guidance. I've received a good pay raise. Work has been interesting and challenging. All's well.
This all coincided with me deciding to take a little break from devrant, and the lack of ranting material kept me from coming back. I just dropped by to say hello and check how devrant is going. I hope you are all doing well :)3 -
I suddenly just want to retire.... Job just feels like never ending work.... Can't find time for a break... And well biggest fear in taking a vacation is the amount of work that piles up while I'm gone...
Maybe I suddenly just have burn out... But suddenly just going ah fck... What's the point of all this....
Sometimes wonder, if I didn't have parents around would I just quit and and just do whatever I want until I run out of money...
How many years that would take....10 -
Hey everyone! This is a long one so get comfy~
TLDR; I'm glad to be back in the presence of all you awesome people. 2019 was a dream and I have a lot of you to thank for that.
If you've noticed, I've been away for a while. I took a sabbatical from a lot of my socials (including github - or at least public github :( this summer. Let me explain:
In late April/early May, I applied and got an internship at RBC (a big bank company in Canada) found out I'm getting flown out to San Fran for a talk I gave at a summit, and got accepted to this 2 week physics [Quantum Cryptography] camp @ UWaterloo. So I had quiet the summer. In order to throw myself into work and friends and all that, I decided that I was going to take a break. Although I took a break from Github I was still active on Github Enterprise for my job but outside of that I didn't do much.
Don't worry though, now that it's fall/winter season, I'll be in my room for way too long so it's back to the usual grind. Currently, I'm in the process of planning a hackathon, prepping for picoCTF 2019, filling out University applications, all while dealing with school :) I've got a lot of projects/things coming up so ya'll will hear more from me :D4 -
Sometimes, I run tests just because I want a break from writing code. In good cases it's so that I take a moment to think about what I'm going to do next. In most cases however, I'm struggling for motivation1

Designer: These form elements should not be textboxes; they should be dropdown menu's.
Me: No problem. Done.
Designer: Could you make X the only selectable option in field A and Y the only selectable option in field B?
Me: I sure can.
Me: Implements a dropdown menu with only one option, knowing that asking questions would label me as "difficult" and "technical". Uploads to production, decides to take a smoke break.
My coping mechanism: Maybe you should also add an Animator to the IK targets on your character controller in Unity instead of depending on a slerped IK weight value.4 -
About 14 hours. From 10 AM to 12 PM.
It was a difficult problem on one of those algorithm practice websites, which I just couldn't let go of. I spent most of the time trying to micro-optimize and do the same (wrong) thing in different ways.
The next day, I managed to finish the problem in 2 hours using a different approach.
I learned a bunch of things from this:
- Algorithm analysis matters.
- If you spend too much time on a problem without taking longer breaks, you get stuck in a loop repeating the same mistakes.
- A fresh mind is significantly more productive and creative. Take a break, think about other things and let go of that mental baggage, you'll be surprised. -
So burnt out.
The worst sort of burn out is when your excited and you still wanna go but you can't seem to get your body to anymore.
Even on a forced break I seem to be thinking product.
I always thought it was so cool in movies where the coder is working there and sleeping there and eating there and chilling there.
Thanks to covid - I've first hand experienced this.
Oh and uh, I fuckin hate it.
I wanna go out.
I miss my coworking space with all the other idiots around me!
I miss eating out!
I miss going out for a beer!
Oh sweet beer how I miss the sweet breweries where I'd get fleeced for a pint!
Take my moniez! Pliz!
Just someone find a vaccine!
Ffs5 -
Without a break this would probably be around 4 hours. After that I just loose all productivity. So there so is really no point in forcing it any further.
For working without sleep I have regular done stretches as long as 32 hours. With just breaks for food and a quick walk around. To keep my body awake.
Why you probably ask yourself, well this has several reasons. For me to get in the "zone" I have to be awake for at least 12 hours. I'm not sure why this is, but the combination of being too tired to get distracted and the increase in dopamine from sleep deprivation. Is I think what makes for this, or by now it might just be a placebo. But well it works for me.
So when a deadline gets near and I'm not going to be able to make it, which used to happen a lot because I used to have a lot of migraines. I would start working in the morning, trying to get things done but not being to able to. Then after a full workday would take a dinner break and get back in the office, at this point I get in the zone and time flies by as I work through the night. Next morning people are coming back in the office and I start another workday.
I try to plan this so I have a lot of meetings or other social work. I get really social and chatty after being awake for more then 24 hours. Because my problem solving skills have really declined after being awake for so long.
Now when I still used to drink, I would after this workday get some dinner and go out to a bar to have drinks with friends. To celebrate me having made my deadline and well I'm really social from being awake so long. And I stop overthinking everything.
Still looking for a way to get in the zone before being awake for so long, so any tips are welcome! -
the usual: suffer in the name of curiosity.
all jokes aside, my goal is to finish several projects and take a long-ass break from it all to fix this burnout, and maybe even find a job somewhere in there too? hopefully? stretch goals? -
My home office, I have my own room for it, when I wanna take a break I can go and make meself some nice coffee. I can also have the TV on playing something for background noise, it helps me more than music for whatever reason. Mainly the office (which according to me I have seen that show about 40 times already)
This is why I really enjoyed the pandemic, but I realize that saying such things sound harsh.
The best fucking part of it? I get to use my own fucking clean restroom. I fucking hate public restrooms or having to share them with strangers because for whatever reason it seems that most people around the world do not have general etiquette when using restrooms.
I have seen some shit that has left me so fucking confused it ain't even funny. Second best part: no fucking commute.5 -
Maybe as a student my burn outs does not count so much, but i must say, i had some.
Worst part is that each kind of landed just before the ending of the semester. You know, that nightmarish part when everbody throws homeworks, tests, projects and presentations at us, while we barely have time to prepare for the incoming exams. Such a wonderful life indeed.
But this time was waaaay worst. And that only because i wanted to do so much this year, i started always early to do my assignments and so on but in the end i was so stuck on their bullshits that i barely had time to work on my things.. i haven't touch any programming project on my own since march!
And i quite have a lot of them planned. I had over the semester and i have now over the summer. But I AM SICK OF THIS. And i figured out that would be for the best to take a break from this things gor a few weeks over the summer. I like this world, the world of programming but i fear that sometimes i might not be good enough to swallow others bullshit for my living, i hope i will be able to keep myself afloat with my own projects and ideas.
Anyways, i hope you all guys have it better than me and those of you who doesn't.. well, i am here for ya!
Cheers 🍻 -
I would never listen to music while writing code because I thought it would distract me to much. I've started doing this lately and I found that I have been more productive. I've noticed I can focus on writing code for a longer (much longer) amount of time before I need to refocus or take a short break.
I've created a "coding" playlist which is growing daily.
Who here finds they are more productive at work while listening to music and what sort of music do you listen to?6 -
Me and my aunt. We put a whole frozen chicken into the microwave. After the frost is gone, it starts moving.
“Boiling moisture”, we think. Then, the chicken awakens. “Leave it to boil, lobsters are boiled alive after all”, says my aunt. “No! We’re microwaving a live animal! That’s torture!”, I scream in panic. We switch the microwave off. Chicken — out. No skin, hellish red meat, severe burns. It tries to scream but can’t. I need to put it out of its misery, NOW.
Aunt says “hold it against the table, I’m going to break its neck”. I oblige, and she proceeds to crush its neck with a two-by-four. It turns out, the neck is basically rubber and doesn’t budge. I have a better idea: let’s do something to its brain directly. I take a pin and proceed to find its skull. But there is no skull to be found, just a capri-sun for its head, with a small pocket of something squishy. The chicken keep wheezing loudly, desperate to scream. I poke that pouch with a pin. It splits in half, spilling the insides — gray chalk.
“It’s gone”, says aunt. “Its suffering is over”.
I sigh in relief. That was quite a cooking experience.
Thank god I woke up. It was just a dream.3 -
Go for a smoke break, sleep, or take rest of the day off depending on how "stuck" you are. Always seem to work.

How the fuck are Jupyter notebooks so popular in research? Like some dude had an idea to take perfectly good markdown and python code, add a whole lot of transitional properties to make version control impossible, encode it as JSON on the assumption that a human could somehow look at it and make sense of countless escaped characters and base64 encoded data, create dedicated software people need to install in order to read what used to be simple plain text, and think "This. This is what 99% of data researchers will use from now on." And somehow, overwhelming majority of researchers agreed that this extremely inefficient data format is the best there is and they should develop all their tools around it.11 -
Tldr; Do not go to the bathroom when you are stuck on a problem.
Most of you will know that when you are stuck on a problem for a while, that it is worth to take a break to look at the problem with a fresh pair of eyes.
It's good advice and I have been doing it for years, however now I have developed a problem with it.....
I don't drink coffee or tea often so when I'm stuck I always take a bathroom break and most of the time an Idea will pop into my head how to solve the problem.
The problem now is that everytime when I am even a little bit stuck I need to go to the bathroom even when I just went.
It's really annoying because now I need to find something else to use as a break because my brain has associate being stuck with needing to go to the bathroom.
It's probably not a good idea to take a coffee break instead because if my brain starts to associate that I will be a coffee addict in no time.... Haha
Do any of you have a good suggestion to use as a break?8 -
I take a task, break it down in smaller tasks which can be done in one day, more if some problem came. But let's say if it finishes within a day and I have free time, I don't start the next thing instead I feel good that I'm done. Is it only me? 🙄3

It's so frustrating when libraries just give you a hello world example and you have to figure out what the fuck it does. No comments, no nothing. Then you go read the documentation, and find out they have topics for everything, but nothing explaining how it all comes together. They give you a hello world and then you have to figure out how the damn thing works.
Now I have to watch YouTube tutorials which will probably all use fucking Spring Boot and extra libraries. I just wanted a barebones example, is that too fucking hard?
EDIT: maybe I should take a break from this thing -

So the winter break is over and im supposed to be in my uni but no! It is flu time!
Since a human is a machine, and we have certain tools to fix it when it misbehaves lets try to debug that problem! I will tell you a story how
it ended.
Both of my parents return from a trip, dad is horribly sick (windpipe infection) so i isolate myself in my room, put on a mask when i have to be near him and wash my hands 3 times i leave my room.
Nope that didnt fucking work, the next day i get flu symptoms(high temp, fatigue, musle and joint pain)
Nothing too bad i can live with it, so i took paracetamol and called it a day.
But im still pissed at my dad for being a fucking idiot and walking everywhere in the house coughing everywhere...
The next day (yesterday)
Took paracetamol again but this time i got a stuffed and runny nose... So i take nasal decongestants, and... they dont work at all...
Today
I wake up with stuffy and cloged nose again. Aparently those nasal drugs i have been taking only make your nose less runny by drying it up, making it 10000x more difficult to unclog your nose...
like wtf? So if you have a runny and stuffed nose you have to choose which one is better?! Nah i take nasal drugs again and clean my nose with saline water, so far so good!
Also paracetamol started working weaker and weaker... What the hell is wrong with me? Im trying to solve 1 problem and my body finds another one! Curing a human is like coding a app, it will go to shit sooner or later.12 -
I am coding like a maniac all day from morning to night and i go to college early 7am and weather change is awful and cold so
Now my head hurts i have headache
After coding and now taking a break i keep hearing fucking screams in my mind
Screams and noise all the fuckinyg time
Like if i try to sleep and or rest or take a break to relax my brain it keeps fucking thinking and worrying about these nonexistent screaming
What the fuck is this have i fucked my mental thinking??? Is my brain fucked is that what ur saying??
Someone help me please3 -
Take a break sometimes. Go outside in fresh air and explain the problem to your self out loud. Doing this has made me ask myself the following question many times: "Why the hell have i just spent hours working on this problem and not realized this simple solution?"
-
Got VS running, SDL up and running and outputting, and angelscript included. Only getting linker errors on angel at the moment, not on inclusion, but on calling engine initialization.
Who knows what it is. Devs recommended precompiling but I wanted to compile with the project rather than as a dll (maybe I'm doing something stupid though, too new to know).
Goal is to do for sdl, cpp, and angelscript, what LOVE2d did for lua. Maybe half baked, and more just an experiment to learn and see if I can.
Would be cool to script in cpp without having to fuck with compilers and IDEs.
As simple as 1. write c++, 2. script is compiled on load, 3. have immediate access to sdl in the same language that the documentation and core bindings are written for.
Maybe make something a little more batteries-included than what lua and love offer out of the box, barebones editors and tooling and the like, but thats off in the near future and just a notion rather than a solid plan.
Needed to take a break from coding my game and here I am..experimenting with more code.
Something is wrong with me.8 -

That moment the client asks to add a single link to a header and you think: "easy enough". But then you notice their CSS.
Not a single f*cking class is used in the entire header, everything is done using :nth-child selectors etc... 🤬
Also, did I mention, the CSS is used for several headers, so adding an element to the header and modifying the CSS might break any other header in the application.
And this after they mentioned last week that they don't use a library like Bootstrap because it is too cumbersome.
I'm so mad right now, have been trying to fix this for half an hour. A task like this shouldn't take more than five minutes!6 -
When you take a break from JavaScript and invest your time on other stuff, you'll realise how paper-thin it is. Java is to JavaScript what Car is to Carpet?1
-
i never knew id reach that point when i need to take a break from programming and everything that has been causing me so much stress for the past few days. and to be honest, it actually feels great to be focused on only one thing instead of stressing out on different projects and debugging them all at once.
in a few days, ill prolly go back to programming some side projects. its not like i can keep myself away from them...
programming is like a magnet for. that magnetic force is growing stronger day by day and im being pulled closer to it. im happy about it except for some occasions when i get too stressed.4 -
So, I am currently on Spring Break, and what do I do when I am on Spring Break: I take a moment to experiment with different languages. This time, I decided to check out Objective C since it mixes up two languages that I love dearly (but that I do not use outside of academic endeavors) which are C and Smalltalk.
Going around the net I found this https://github.com/Flying-Toast/...
Notice: I have nothing against Swift, I stopped developing apps for IOS back when Swift was in its infancy, so I was forced to use Objective C and tbh I never had an issue with it, I had learned it before through GNUStep, the language was obviously strange when I started learning it, but I did not hate it, I tried following Swift to see if I could use it at least in some portions, but at the time of its release it was still pretty much beta for me, so I passed. I feel it is much better now, but the issues with the language at this point in time I feel are more from the side of XCode which can either be just ok, good or an absolute piece of shit depending on the release. Either way, I found the link to be funny.2 -
Sometimes I get inspiration for pole choreos, so I can take a break to try it out. I don't even have to change from my pole outfit1

Me: I've spent 2 hours on this problem, this is exhausting, I need to take a break...
*10 seconds into the break*
My Brain: I think I know what the problem is
Me: Onto another 2 hour coding/debugging session!
Who needs breaks anyways1 -
Agile Product Owner: How long do you think this task will take?
Me: Probably 13 points.
APO: That is too many can you break it down into separate tasks?
Me: Sure its probably an 8 and an 8. Since i need to work on them sequentially and one depends on the other, the second task will take longer if i need to make changes after the first one is merged.
~ Turned 104 (8 tasks * 13) points into 128 (16 tasks * 8 points) points.
A 13 represents a whole 2 week sprint.
An 8 represents a week and a half.
We cannot fit 2 8 point tasks in the same sprint, so now it takes 2 whole sprints to complete 2, 8 point tasks.
We have no smaller tickets so we don't work for the rest of the sprint.
Anyone else been here?5 -
Whenever I take a break from my editor, I end up pressing j and k to scroll up and down in be browser, only to be disappointed. Looks like someone at FB was having the same problem and added it to their newsfeed. Thanks bud!1

Wow I'm first!! Uhm... 8... I forgot to take lunch break cuz I was really busy or the code was really interesting...
If within 24 hrs... Maybe 12... I had to login at night a few times to finish urgent work (bug fixes) -
Be patient seem to be basic, but after many hors of unsucessfull code i'ts a challenge.
So take a break if your need one. -
Ugh! I feel so low and less motivated because I am unable to solve the interview practice questions really well.
This is fucking annoying. I am not sure what is that that I am lacking.
I got the framework. I have problem statements. I am practicing mocks. I got the feedback and I implemented it.
I have spent ~30 hours on this till now. Solved around ~20 cases, 10 of each category.
Should I now purely bet on luck? Maybe I'll take a break and submit the other companies case assignment to divert my mind.
I need to crack the interview and land the offer at all cost. There is no chance or scope for failure.7 -
You might need to take a break when you get a "max recursion depth exceeded" error when you weren't even trying to build a recursive function.5
-
If you start to get frustrated, take a break. Your brain has two modes of thinking: focused & diffuse. You can only utilize focused mode for a short time, and sometimes it's harder to look at the broader picture. Go take a walk, do some push-ups, or check devRant. You diffuse mode will make some connections when you're not even trying once you relax a little bit.5

1. Come home from matrix job at 5pm
2. Eat 45 mins
3. Take a break 15 mins for brain to breathe
4. Now its 6pm
5. Blink
6. Now its 10pm and time for bed to continue slaving my life to matrix job6 -
I’ve been dealing with low motivation for a few weeks now. Usually, I would take a break or build something fun, but I’m not even motivated for those things lately. Looking forward to everyone’s coping mechanisms for ideas.

Can we like stop making new Frameworks every month and just take a break for like 2 years, cause Gawd Damn! 😣; It should be illegal to make a new Framework in the next 2 years🙂2

life becomes sulking when you have no support.
1. bought a new car. finally everything went good and i was able to get out of the infinite loop of anxiety : "where would i park?" "fights with neighbour" , "how to become confident after learning to drive in driving schools?" , efc
2. on delivery day, a friend helped park the new car near home. the plan was that from next day , we will start taking classes on self car with a car trainer
3. this morning, i took a class with car trainer alongside my mom as she wanna learn too. she used to drive somewhat shakily 10 years ago.
She got scared seeing me to drive. i was driving fine as the trainer hmmself didn't scolded me anything. i was driving at 30kmph on empty roads, while she is trained to drive at 10-15kmph. whe she drove, her driving was full of jerks and sudden break/clutch release, but i remained mum
4. later on, one of my friend also rejected going with me for driving. and the car trainer is also citing some time issues for next few days. i am now stuck with:
- a brand new car wrapped under sheets with no future for getting out
- a driving license in my wallet that will keep on taking dust as i would rarely be allowed to ever take my car out for a 60km drive to office.
-some overly anxious parents trying to take out my morale
- a sad me. when will the life give me a chance to fuckin grow up?
i have cracked the IT for fuck's sake. i started from peanuts salary, and worked my way to a great package, i am a person who understands how to live. why the fuck can't i learn this skill5 -
Risk is part of my everyday life.
I take the risk everyday when opening IDE and changing line of code that can either break database or crash other systems that are depending on one I am developing. ( not instantly but in some time in the future )
So....
Many years ago I was updating some application server production code while being drunk.
Everything went fine except me waking up in the morning and didn’t remember how I did it.
... what I learned from my developers life except that heavy drinking and updating servers is not the best idea ?
First, don’t give a fuck, do your job and ask questions even if the person in front of you said that understood everything and you think you understood all of shit.
Second, if you think you know what to do think twice.
Third, having any backup, any tests and any documentation is always better then having nothing.
And the most important.
The most risky in every business are people around you, so always have good people around and there would be no risk at all or you won’t even think about it.

What's better for finding candidates for a development role: having the candidate solve a complex whiteboard problem or have the candidate refactor some code (maybe a couple of small modules) while explaining as he/she goes through each step?
I personally feel both are good, but I think refactoring is a very much needed skill when you're dealing with the complexity of millions and millions lines of code, so being able to change your inital design to make it more readable and flexible later on is crucial. And refactoring usually goes hand and hand with having tests in place.
An interesting exercise would be to give the candidate a test suite with the corresponding code that's tested in a working state and let the candidate decide how much refactoring needs to be done. In the process the candidate would need to break and fix tests of course while changing things... it'll give a good measure of their ability to take code and change it to a "better" state of design and flexiblity.
On the other hand I do think there is a place for cliche white boarding problems because it really shows one willingness to tackle complex problems which do arise in most development jobs. Asking the questions and being persistent goes along way and can really help when you're collaborating with other developers to solve an issue at hand.
Overall I think there should be a white board problem, but I don't think that should be the deciding factor. Rather couple it with other very practical skills you should have as a developer already; among those being refactoring.1 -
Dear Windows,
you done fucked it up!
I had a god damnit run, finishing the last mammoth task of our sprint.
Then, i decided to take a 3 minutes bio break.
Came back to my machine just to realise that this little OS bitch sneaked up on me, used the few seconds of my break to do a unholy, reboot of doom and damnation.
As a result, my virtual machine dropped it's php-storm settings...
I lost my precious focus on the task and my last nerves to figure out the correct settings again.
To cut a long story short.
We missed the aim of the Sprint.
The Sprint failed and i got a half-baked module.
At least, all the complicated businesslogic is proper covered by unittests.2 -
Alright, anyone ranting about politics/censorship rn needs to take a break, eat some food, drink some coffee, and get back to work damnit.2
-
To not be stuck means to be able to change gears mentally. Put it in neutral for a bit and take a break, relax, rest. Or coffee.
Either push through the roadblock with everything you have like it's due the next day and ride that momentum or hold back and find inspiration in little things: the sounds around you, the sights, the local wildlife (coworkers ;).
And don't forget someone else has probably had that EXACT problem and solved it so you may just luck out if you can google the right search. -
Making my first larger scale project in C...
Every time I take a look at my code, I realise I should implement better error handling here and there.
And then every time I try to break my programme with erroneous input, it actually blows up, despite all my effort to prevent that 😖😖3 -
WHO CAN SPOT THIS STUPID PHP ERROR!
$string = "something.com"
if(strpos(".", $string))
echo " yep, there's a period";
else
echo "nope, fuck you there isn't";
output: "nope, fuck you there isn't"
me: wtf ??? fucking wasting my time on this fucking stupid tiny fucking error, goddamnit and each refresh takes 15 seconds because it involves calling all these apis from localhost, gmail, etc. arggg...
...for an hour, until I smacked my head so hard I'm in the hospital for a concussion
I hate when that happens.
Time to take a break.15 -
When during the holidays you're working from home and take a break to take part to a heavy Italian family lunch and drink so much that suddenly all bugs get solved by themselves... magic handmade wine! Cheers!3
-
I think I would be much more efficient if I didn't have to sit on a chair and look at the screen while coding. Often it is so hindering to type with my fingers and I just wish I could code directly with my brain. 😶
Should I take a break? 😂1 -
Is anyone aware of any good software dev/comp sc magazines? I want to take a break from news letters and podcasts.7
-
There is a particular power move when you take someone's shit code, refactor it to make it faster, safer and more readable and then request a review from them on your PR. "See how I dunked on you, bitch. This is what superiority is about." And at the same time you can be perfectly polite with "oh you know this part of the code well, I wouldn't want to break anything there" with the "bitch" just strongly implied.3

Is....this...the life thats awaiting me for the rest of my life if i dont earn millions asap? If so then i dont want it. I reject this type of life like satan rejects cross. I do not want to be a part of this clownery.
REALISTICALLY getting 2 hours per day of optimized time and energy to work on my project, is not enough. Even 8 hours a day is not enough. I need full time work on my project. Thats how valuable it is.
This job is draining me. I feel like i signed a contract with the devil to drain my soul. Fuck. Seems like all contracts we sign is the same shit as selling our soul for money? WTF think about this bullshit! Celebrities seem to be the smartest then. They sign contracts to perform satan rituals in exchange for MILLIONS of dollars while we sign a contract to work for satan and get paid $8.125 an hour like fucking losers.
I cant believe nobody warned me about this satanic society since i was a little kid13 -
Hey everyone, have you ever had a creative block right when you're up against a tight deadline? It's like your brain just decides to take a vacation at the worst possible time.
I had a project due yesterday and I was feeling pretty confident about it until I sat down to work on it. Suddenly, my mind was blank and I couldn't think of a single idea. I tried everything from taking a break to listening to music, but nothing seemed to work.
Eventually, I resorted to staring at the wall and hoping for some sort of divine inspiration. But all I got was a headache and a growing sense of panic as the deadline drew nearer.
Finally, in a fit of desperation, I started randomly typing words and phrases into my project, hoping that something would stick. And to my surprise, it did! I ended up with a project that was not only finished on time but also creatively interesting.
So, the lesson I learned from this experience is that sometimes you just need to let go of your expectations and dive headfirst into the unknown. Who knows, you might just surprise yourself with what you come up with.3 -
<long post>
To start of I'm a student in the Netherlands, I have just finished finished a support management study and I'm currently starting with a IT Management study on MBO 4 lvl.
At the moment I'm in conflict scout doing the IT Management study or doing a application development study as I just don't know what to do. I kind of want do development as I do it in my free time and I like it but I also want to do data center engineering as I also like to work with the hardware.
Should I take a month break of my study and try to get in contact with company's to work there to finalize my decision or should I just drop in the towel and do this study without knowing if I'm going to like it in the end.
And if you work at a company in the Netherlands do you think i can do some orientation internship at your company or do you guys know some places to look at.
</Long post>6 -
Take a break for little while, watch some shows, play some video games, learn something new, before heading back to the grind.
-
I've been coding for almost all day when I decided to add in uploading of files... I need to take a break... ☕1
-
Be honest. Given that you're not in crunch mode. Do you actually work 8 hours every day?
I have had some days but usually it's impossible for me to do actual work as a developer for 8 full hours, 5 times a week.
I feel that (without meetings), my ideal schedule for days of normal workload would be 5 hours a day. I'm strictly speaking about focused work, actual programming. Meetings don't usually rack up more than 2-3 hours per week for me.
I do my best to be in the office during the expected hours but I can't help but feel that everything about my engagement, focus and contribution at work would be better if I could just stroll in around 10, well rested, do some actual work, take a short lunch break, go at it again and go home around 15:30...
Because I feel like this I quickly get judgemental about myself if I come in at 9 and leave around 16:30 too often during a work week.
What are your thoughts on this subject?3 -
Love when code doesn't work so you take a break, come back and clear it and retype exactly what you just had and it works.
-
Background: I am working on task x. On successful completion of task x, task y may be given to me. Task x is haaaaaard. My group is not the only player and any fuck up will break my group and at least two others. Now here is my story:
Me: Yeah I am doing this hard thing and that hard thing and getting ready for these hard meetings.
FormerCoWorker fcw (): wow that sounds hard.
CurrentCoWorker ccw (): yeah he's working on task x and task you.
Me me (): what? No I'm not. I am working on task x. Don't go randomly assigning me tasks like that.
ccw: well if you finish task x you will be an expert in section z of code. So it is only natural you take on task you.
me: yeah but task x sucks and task y is why several engineers have quit the company. You never know. You could be assigned task y and quit. Why do I have to take on task y and quit?
NGL, I will do it of they promote me. I may be a whore, but I am gonna get paid. -
I crash and burn during coding interview questions. Every. Time.
I just do. It's terrible. It doesn't matter how much I tell myself to slow down and just think it through first before coding...I end up coding first after a short period of thinking about it. Don't get it right, freak out...and well I crash and burn.
It bums me out. The worst part is that I'm so distraught about it that I take a break, and sit down and solve it in like 10 minutes...of course it doesn't matter since it happens after the interview.
I just need to practice solving these things to get that mindset right.3 -

Since Friday whenever I come home my mates are partying, started drinking on Friday and didn’t really stop since.
Still made it to work today but now we’re having pints again.
I should take a break but it’s so much fun.. how bad can it be.. it’s just Guinness.. or how we call it by now „black gold“..
I’m too old to die young anyway🤷♂️🥳
Have a good week guys..1 -
Im exhausted from life honestly. I dont think any vacation will help at this point. If i take vacation it will seem like its never enough. I need more than a vacation. I need a break from... life itself7
-
I am exhausted. Slept for 2 hours last night because of new private problems... was eating myself alive from stress. Im still highly stressed and haven't ate anything today. I cant eat because of high stress. I feel like puking if i eat. Cant even eat soup. Sitting here coding at my desk and my eyes are shutting down. My body is overwhelmed. Got so much shit to do i cant take a break. I need to mediate3
-
Sometimes there are times when we are low on motivation. Happens very often. Best thing would be to take a break, go for a run or a walk, watch some programming related videos and after a while, get back to work. You will have your motivation back by then if you stay determined!
-
I got back from my small 3 day vacation Sunday and I also decided to just take a break and relax before I hop back into my lil project I’m working on but it makes me feel like shit for taking so long to get back to it. Like I know I need breaks but I feel like I’m not good if I take breaks like this Idk don’t get me wrong I fuckin love programming more than anything but i just don’t want to force myself to work on something even if I do love it.
-
I just been feeling really burned out recently to the point I just feel things are just meaningless. I feel unappreciated at work or by people in my life. I appreciate myself but the pandemic is really getting to me. I had to take a break from studying at times when I couldn't focus or got too out of touch. I'm usually better than this.
I tried reaching out as I continue to put up with my current consulting position, study and job searching when I'm not too burned out. I just feel alone in this. Can anyone relate?3 -
Just spent the whole night awake to do a university coursework.
Not because I was late or it was difficult, but because the framework we had to use was so wrong that I had to take a 20 minutes break for desperation for every line I wrote. -
Best:
I finally got involved in “big projects!
Normally I only completed 50-60% of a project, but now I have 2-3 that “actually matter” (aka team of people that count on me), so I have to finish them!
Also had my first ever hackathon!
Basically I’m super stoked! Got a bit burned out from coding in November, but after a break, I’m ready to take on 2021!2 -
i had a massive burnout today where i was in college since 6am and i have a flu so at one moment i snapped and could no longer focus on lectures could not even write or listen or understand anything. i was physically there and mentally stranded. this is because i have been working for the past 2 years without 1 day of a break. it rly got to me. should i force myself to go to college or should i take at least 7 days of mental break?4
-
Even though my first rant was a rant ranting about rants this is definitely my favorite devForum so far. I'm new to this stuff so I've been checking out a few of them.
Plus I'm learning new stuff. Every time I don't get a joke I head over to Stack Overflow till I do. Probably not the best use of time but it helps to take a break every now and then. -
3. After that I take a decent break (e.g. an hour) because my productivity and efficiency reduce, and I'm not paid by the hour so a sustainable, high quality output that fits in with my life is the objective.3
-
My life always oscillates between:
"Ugh, i hate this super stressful fast paced company environment. These guys are offering me great money, but i am here whole day, running my brain for 9 hrs straight. I need to get out of this torture and take a break!"
And
"Ugh I hate sitting idle at home. I could not come out of my bed till noon, watch Netflix whole day and porn whole night and broke af. I need to get in some job and get back to routine"1 -
"if compiler can infer this, there is no need to add "x ->" , simply use it" ..AAAGHH FUCK YOUUUUU KOTLIN!! what else should i fucking not write? why do't you take a number of my employee and ask his requirements, maybe add a ShoppingKartApp.kt in your compiler next time? it will be completely inferred when i write "Fuck you" in the gradle.
And fucking companies are promoting this! I wonder how those devs are living there
Person A knows only that lambda is
{name:Type,name:Type->code}, and thus writes a clean code.
Person B comes says "This shit suck", writes "{ acc, i -> acc + " " + i }" ,goes away
Person A : "wtf is this shit? why it works?"
Please for the love of god, follow some rules! My first language was python, i love its zen:
- Beautiful is better than ugly.
- Simple is better than complex.
- Readability counts.
- Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules.
- There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.
- If the implementation is hard to explain, it's a bad idea.
-...
I just wish it follows at least one thing from python's zen : "There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it."3 -
By looking at data from an app that analyses my smartphone uses, I came to know that I spend most of my time going through GitHub notifications and Emails in comparison to WhatsApp or social sites. Even when I don't have a notification I open GitHub to check.
I really need to take a break I think!1 -
Take a walk, or focus on something else for a while, then after I've had a break I can return to whatever the problem is.
-
The moment when you are reading and the screen goes black multiple times 😄😄

Just take a break.... -
Today is release day!
Got a whole set of new features to deploy on production!
Also, internet at the office has been dead since 6am.
I'll take a coffee break. -
Fucking hell! I'm trying to sit down and learn LaTeX so I can take notes with math formulas in the notes. Between work, random bullshit, crappy roommate drama, cats with the zoomies, and the kiddo going nuts wanting to play I just can't catch a fucking break to studying.
I'm torn between drinking a cup of coffee at 10pm to be able to get a chance to study or being able to sleep tonight...
However in the hell did I convince myself that going back to school at 30 would work better than when I was 19-20?!? (I'm still only 29 but shit I loose steam quickly these days 😰)
Lol I'll update the rant here if I drink that cup of 10pm joe!4 -
Looking for "real reviews" of Udemy courses.
Who here have taken a Udemy course?
Which course did you take?
What was your opinion of it, in terms of overall quality, material coverage, interactivity (the coursework), and so forth?
Did you feel you actually learned useful things at the conclusion of it?
Had you taken a similar course through a different service? Which service and how did it compare?
There are some $10 courses at Udemy I'm considering purchasing. But there are two $100/each courses I'm highly interested in. TMI: We are a single income, single parent household of 3 with Christmas nearing and all the childrens have birthdays this month. Spring Break was apparently a very busy time for the adults of our extended family. Hence, even the $10 is hard to part with.4 -
Guys enough dev. Take a break. Lets watch some football today.
I am a huge Real Madrid fan. WBU?

This one night over Christmas break I was drinking with a few friends from the program when I decided to take out my laptop and learn Elixir. I kept saying I need to learn more or I wasn't gonna get a job 👌
-
I didn't thought my supervisors face palm'd me due to being absent on a regular holiday.
I just want to take a break and rest. Waking up at 4am and work for 9.5 hours is tiring AF -
Use the Pomodoro technique. 25 min focuc followed by a 5 minute break. After 4 Pomodoros you take 20 min break.
There are several articles about that technique.2 -
Test your code. Take extra time to do self-review. It'll improve your code quality and position within your peers.
When you enter that "minor change-trial-error" phase. Go to sleep or take a long break. You're loosing time and adding more work to be reviewed and corrected later -
so i have a situation, hopefully hypothetical for now.
assume that i have to take a break from my work and stay at home for 6 years. i cannot sit in front of laptop for more than 10 minutes at a time,or more than a few hours a day . the remaining time i would be doing non technical/home work.
what would be something that i could do in those years to keep myself job ready once am ready to come out of that hiatus?6 -
lol so I got a new oldish laptop (so it doesn't break the bank) for my upcoming trip where I focus on working on my own project.
Didn't want to splurge since I have another laptop that I regularly use. just didn't want to take through customs since it's 8 years old.
Already used up half of the storage (128/256gb) from installing rider and wsdl lol.
thinking maybe I need to actually return it and get a more powerful machine o.o they are so expensive though12 -
Stop thinking about it. Personally I like to take a long coffe break, go out with friends, cook something, or my fav to learn something completly different, like a new word in a foreign language or some random shit.2
-
At my first job, I was in test automation. For a major new complicated feature, I was the test lead and its final stages coincided with a company trip to Israel. I got to sit side by side with its lead developer and he went over all his code and database changes with me. He kept stopping because I guess I had that deer in headlights expression and he thought he was boring me. Actually I was just in awe. He was so proud of his work on it and had every right to be. It was so cool of him to take an hour or two and break it down for me like that.
He told me he wanted to make sure I understood all the pieces involved so I could test more and he could release a rock solid new feature. -
Sure am glad they decided to take a break for 20 years from allowing people to learn and to work on their own shit.
So great for example we have a cheapo government, that won;t invest money into people to learn things like the underlying lowlevel aspects of the kernel and an fbi office like that in philadelphia that would rather drug the adherent and let them wake up somewhere else, twice.
if i were them i'd be looking at said formerly blond long haired 40 something bitch manning that post. -
It's something that comes with practice, but in general it's much better to overestimate than underestimate.
- Always take your time. Don't be rushed into plucking a number out of thin air.
- Break the task down into really small, atomic chunks.
- Each of those chunks will take at least twice as long as you think it does - nothing goes to plan 100% the first time!
- Make sure you add contingency at the end. -

Self-isolation takes its toll on people's lives and, naturally, on interviews for our platform . So, a technical interview with a DevOps engineer at Zoom. The candidate started to surprise us already in the first minutes of the meeting. To begin with he apparently decided that the formality was enough at the first stage of the interview and decided to talk to the technical experts in a T-shirt and lying on the couch. That would have been fine, but in the middle of the interview his caring wife came in and insisted that the husband should eat his sandwiches and drink his tea. The candidate tried to remain unperturbed and undistracted, but his short "no", "don't want to", "come on!" didn't take effect. At one point, the applicant's wife escalated the tone of the conversation and threw a sandwich at him, promising to do the same with the tea. The supervisor and I became worried about the candidate and already in the voice of his wife began to persuade him to take a break for an afternoon snack. And such stressful interviews happen, and not at the company's initiative.7

Unity is such a load of shit. Why would you have every single tutorial tell you to instantiate a prefab with the Instantitate() method then have it break your game on build because you haven't loaded each individual asset inline. Isn't the magic of this whole process that the editor take care of that shit? Now the project I was sure would be finished by this morning is going to take me AT LEAST another day.1

I Want nothing more than to take a break from the internet just turn my shity school ipad off for a few days but nope can't do that 3 papers due 1 test all has to be done on a school ipad with this shitty virtual keyboard never thought I would get carpel tunnel at 16 lol according to parents I don't need a computer with a screen that I don't have to cram my neck down to look at I don't need a keyboard I can use 2 hands to type with can't spend my own money on something that would improve my life allow me to do more than one thing at a time and maybe have some time for myself computers are just toys right ? they have no real use.
sorry for my useless rambling i'm just salty today6 -
Sober me: *stopping working on code fully documented with comments* let's take a break.
Drunk me: * stumbles across still open code* psh what a nerd *deletes comments*
Sober me: * sitting back down* okay where was I... For the love of!
Drunk me is a dick to sober me. Need to lock stuff up better....3 -
When I work extra hours on weekends, so I can finally take a break from Microsoft Word and write some code for a change. It's going on for a second week now, if not longer 😢
-
During these interesting times it has certainly been a productive one for me. But after this fuckup i need to take a break. Also came to the reallisation i rely too much on Ctrl-r in terminal. I just needed to find that one long weird rsync thingy that i use once a quarter year...
:~$ history -c | grep rsync | grep...
I need a break. I royally fucked up now and i cannot be bothered right now to type that 25 lines of escaped backslashed one-liner rsync thing...3 -
Any one remember me talking about Covey (have a look at my rants from about 5 months ago)?
Well, it's finally (somewhat) usable!
https://github.com/chabad360/covey
For those who are wondering why it took so long, work (I got a job!) and some bugs in a core dependency of plugin system got in the way. I actually have to take a break right around now, for about 3 weeks to work on a project that has a deadline. But after that it should be smooth sailing to a proper alpha release!
You'll need to install upx for the build, and postgres for the actual function, and you want a few VMs to act as nodes, but have fun! -
It’s been a while since I have posted here but I felt like I want to rant without any thought of being judged.
I had take a break from work and it was working well for me. I had my ups and downs. I was always working on something but on the outside everyone just assumed that I did nothing.
I had other personal incidents that affected me. I started to get trigger with my environment and how much ever effort I made to make it lower it was still triggering.
For that reason I thought to pick up course in a different country and work on myself w/o these triggers existing.
Even though I have a plan to get started to work on things. There is this huge heaviness in my head that doesn’t seem to go away. It makes me doubt wether I am good enough to be a developer.
The previous two companies that I worked for keep reaching out to me to join them back but it still doesn’t feel like enough.
I think I am just scared to fail at this point.
Plus with everyone constantly asking me about the recession it’s adding up to my cloudy head.
I know this cloudy feeling is temporary but it’s this that stops me from being an optimal person and that mildly infuriates me. -
I took a career transition last year and I'm starting to question my decision. I'm stuck.
I've only learned to hack shit together in my past jobs (except one freelance project where I pretty much learned most of what I now properly know), exposing me to bad practices. To make it worse, I lack fundamentals and basics so can't even write JavaScript beyond for loops without documentations.
Lately I've been pushed to take charge in structuring a project from scratch. I failed at understanding what exactly Webpack does mainly because it required knowledge of web modules which I still find elusive. I make time to learn basics in the evening or weekends but most of the time I'm taking home the internship work project that I, again, just need to hack shit together, depleting my energy by the end of day.
Now I'm at the stage where I need money, for which I'm thinking of applying for waitressing or entry-level marketing jobs. I'm shit scared that I'll never break into the industry and will just end up living day by day feeling unfulfilled.
I'm so tired of trying.2 -
1. I don't have much of a social life.
2. I Sleep whenever I get time off It makes me feel better and think better.
3. I don't get in any kind of argument I prefer losing tho rather than ramming my head in senseless arguments.
4. Most important I take a break sometimes too.. helps me keeping my mind Positive. -
Normally take a break. Think for a moment what am I trying to do and HOW am I doing it. That way i unstuck myself and find even a better way to do whatever i was doing.
-
I'm in need of an opinion.
I'm in my final year at my university and have finished all my major subjects. Lately I have been having the feeling that I am under utilizing my ability and That I can do a lot more than what I'm doing in my life.
Just to put into perspective, I have one heck of a resume with senior job positions.
I've been considering leaving or taking a break from my university so that I can at least see where I am in life and to fully utilize my skills to see if I can build a better life than the one I'm currently. Honestly, I have no "Raggrets". I just feel like I can do better now and come back to uni to finish my degree in the coming years.
What would your take be? Would it be okay for me to quit? Since I have epic network and people know me by my skills, I don't believe finding a good job would be hard. And I already have a pretty decent job. I just don't know if I should take a break from university or not.4 -
To this day if I could do find the people who decided they'd break the rest of what is going on beyond the partial truth of people deserving punishment getting it I'd happily remove their skin a patch at a time over days if I thought our encounter wasn't a set up.
To take joy in slowly destroying not only freedom in this country but the good with the bad and all future prospects for everyone heh
And make some people look around and not even see an inkling of humanity in the gawking gabbing critters often commenting on their posts for example4 -
As long as there are people working on their stuff with whom I can take a cig break, barely anywhere, even outside (assuming my battery lasts enough)
-
I got some problem. I work on some company maintaining web application. Every time I add some feature I often accidentally break other features. I read about testing (unit test, integration testing, etc) and ask my project manager and CTO to implement test on our web application but they refused it. The reason is because the web application is already large and it will take a long time to implement. Actually maintain this application is very stressful because it takes along time to add new feature and every time I break something either CEO or Client will scold me. Do you guys have idea/solution to solve this problem?1
