Walking with gf.
diadev: hey that desk would be perfect for someone with one monitor!
GF: What kind of fuckin normie has one monitor?
I'm keeping this one 😂26 -
Dear StackOverflow-Team,
How can I be productive, if you show me those kind of "Hot network questions"?19 -
Unbelievable...
My company bought me a new laptop. It has 2 512 GB SSDs.
Our IT set it up with windows 10.
ON BOTH SSD.
OM fucking G. How dump you have to be to install windows 10 two times in the same machine? What kind of mental illness is this?40 -
Girl: Can you make me an app?
Me: What kind of app do you have in mind?
Girl: I want it to be... like an app!
Me: Sounds a bit to difficult sorry.10 -
WHATTT?!! I need 10 WHOLE POINTS JUST TO BUILD AN AVATAR!!! What kind of person would set such a high amount of points just to CREATE AN AVATAR! Do you know how hard that is for an introvert... ugg What kind of post should I rant about? I could rant about that one problem with HTML <divs>.. but then everyone would laugh at how simple that was... I could rant about how long I have had to live without this app. No no that would be way to big of a rant... hmmm. OH I KNOW!37
-
I think I'm going to delete my account.
I browsed through my personal feed, and even though I've spend some time curating, only about 1 in a 100 is a real rant. The rest are memes, mildly funny observations, the kind of programmer humor which is only funny to non-programmers, and bland anekdotes.
And when I post something IN ALL CAPS WITH SOME FUCKING CURSEWORDS AND RAGE IN THERE YOU CUNTS ALL TELL ME TO CALM DOWN AND BE MORE POSITIVE?
What kind of a weak, smoothieslurping mindfulness convention has this community become? Do you guys just want to be a mildly funny reddit clone for easily offended hipsters?
This place was my outlet, my venting space, the spot where I didn't feel alone in frustrations.
I find this new content fucking sickening.56 -
Every Monday morning:
I hate this 9-5 life. This kind of time constrains should not be allowed. I will not allow someone else to control my life. *gets ready to make rebel group and protest against government*
10 minutes later:
*sigh* *Opens up Visual Studio*10 -
A US senator or judge or whatever his title is said today that he wants companies/governments to build a 'responsible encryption' system.
Preferably that would exist out of a big ass database which stores the private keys of citizens so in case a person loses their private key or the government needs access to encrypted content, that is possible.
NOO, WHAT COULD FUCKING POSSIBLY GO WRONG!?!?!
Seriously those kind of people should not be allowed to have the kind of positions they have.
This shit makes me so angry.45 -
I actually love Mr. Robot because at least they are trying to show the actual tools plus the codes that can be used to hack, not some kind of random console outputs that doesn't even make sense in the most of the tv series/ movies4
-
Client: We need these book genres added to the website ASAP!
PM: Hey dev, its priority #1, please add these genres ASAP!
Dev: Okay, can I get a file which needs to be imported?
Client: Oh we will have that in couple of weeks.
Dev: Okay so write me in couple of weeks.
Client: What kind of company is this? Outrageous!!!5 -
There is one thing I have seen here in devRant. No matter how stupid rant you post no one trolls you. People are kind of humble here. They try to help you.
Just an observation, may not be true.10 -
Put some kind of course into the studies which makes students get in touch with open source technology.
May it be arduino's, open source languages, frameworks, whatever.
But especially teach them what open source stands for. I mean we already teach them how to work with closed source technology explicitly so let's show them the other side as well!12 -
Coding has caused a paradigm shift in the way I look at the world. Previously I would look at something and be amazed as to how it happened or was made and then depressed because I would think such things could only be done by geniuses and not by me. Now, I know that complex things are made up of many simple things and anything complex can be kind of deconstructed with enough understanding. Its an empowering feeling knowing that I can create something amaizng.3
-
Project manager : I want you to do the job by tomorrow.
Me : I can't, there's some problem with MySQL.
PM : Then use somebody else's SQL, but I want the job done by tomorrow!
Me : *weeps in silence*5 -
To all IT-guys out there, be it the desperate sysadmin or the kind lady of the support team, I whish all of you and your family/friends a merry christmas! 😃4
-
Devrant is the reason I left Facebook. Why be with those shitty people when you have community of your own kind!9
-
So a company is looking for a web developer intern with minimum 3 years of job experience! What kind of intern that would be!10
-
Not sure if this would be true since I find it very hard to judge this one myself but I hope that some people on here see me as some kind of mentorish person when it comes to either Linux, privacy of security.
Parenthesis on "hope"😅21 -
Full stack web dev has no idea what an ssh key is. He is telling me that he can't read the key file, it would be kind of me if I could send him a .txt file instead.
Fuck me man...5 -
My mom was kind of addicted to one of those fake news buzzfeed kind of online communities. She used to send me these posts like every day.
Spent about two months deliberately destroying each and every "scientific article" she sent me. It was a pseudo-scientific trash fake news kind of page and pretty much every article was just made up or had same kind of communities as a reference. I just googled the shit out of each and every topic.
She's unsubscribed now.
Feels good. I noticed that most of people of previous generations really need to be taught how to use google. Some of these communities are full-blown propaganda machines spreading things like anti-vaxx or similar.6 -
There I was, thinking I’d never be the kind of idiot who spills a cup of coffee over his laptop.
Little did I know I was eventually going to be a premium member of that club.2 -
Searched "Shutdown" and Windows recommends me to install 2 different apps or make a web search for it instead of an option to shutdown my PC.
If this is the kind of "AI" Microsoft is making, I think we should be concerned 😒29 -
My first rant so be kind ;)
All week have been waiting for a day off to finish a side project, and when that day finally comes, my daughter has a fever.
Will have to wait till next week.5 -
Heard this one on the lift today:
"I'm more of a backend guy"
You have to be really careful when you say that kind of stuff...7 -
Juste design a new algorithm to evaluate the chance of a project (any kind of project) will exceed the budget (time of cost). This algorithm been proven to be right almost all the time.
-
My instincts are telling me that i should resign from this company asap.
My team lead knows a to z of the project and he is the all rounder guy here. If my team lead leaves, I could be the one replacing him. But i don't want to accept this kind of responsibility.
My life goal is to not get sucked into the 9 to 5 life or work in this kind of environment.
The only pro i find is that i now have few more cool friends.
But I'd rather be be my own boss and work 24/7.
I now feel like living a lie going to work everyday..8 -
Do you think you need to be smart at math to be a programmer
People ask me that, my answer is like.. Well.. No
That's kind of bullshit36 -
I've met some brilliant people in my career, the problem is, the more brilliant, the more of a jerk they are (typically, there are some exceptions though). Sure you may be incredibly smart, but no one wants to work with that kind of arrogance and it's probably why you still can't find a job.4
-
my job offer reply rant from today >>>>
Hi,
thanks for the offer but reading from job description your solutions look obsolete, old and complete mess to me.
I am mainly focused on modern open source, flexible technology stack and this job would not be a challenge I am looking for.
Good luck
Kind regards
<<<< end of story1 -
Give everyone a chance
If someone in your company/workgroup doesn't know something basic that you might take for granted, don't undermine them and mock them.
Everyone has to learn and it just breaks morale and motivation.
Be humble and think that you're not any kind of God and think that you wouldn't like the same thing happening to you.
People who mock others for not knowing stuff just piss the shit out of me.
Be humble guys4 -
So this just happened... not to me, but at my friend's company.
The devs are being congratulated and spurred on for working late! I don't know about you, but this is not the kind of culture that should be encouraged.15 -
Getting paid for doing nothing. Working only on my personal projects. Making a useless JS Framework that every company uses. Learning how to exit vim.
Okay, the last one may be kind of impossible.3 -
Hey. I have some steam keys I don't want, and I don't really have any friends to give them away to, so. Here you go!
I'll post them in the comments below.
Only redeem them if you actually want the game, and if you've used one please comment or upvote to let others know! Be kind, don't be greedy, honor system, etc. etc.27 -
Currently, a classmate and I are working on our technical thesis.
It is all about industry 4.0, IIoT, big data and stuff.
This week, we presented our interim results to our supervisor. He is very pleased with our work and made the following suggestion:
He thinks it would be awesome to publish our work on our own GitHub repository and make it open source because he is convinced that this thesis is able to kind of "set a new standard" in some specific fields of using big data analysis in production processes.
I guess I'm kind of proud :)4 -
Alright! so it's not much but my game engine is slowly gaining actually useful features, just finished implementing a basic sprite class that now renders basic sprites!
It may not be much but kind of proud at how well I have been able to just pick up Vala from scratch and start building something!12 -
Who ever prefixes their table names like this should be sentenced to death.
tbltable_name or tbltablename
Is that some kind of sadistic fetish or something.
My eye can’t fucking pinpoint the first letter, thus I can’t easily find the table. I have seen it so many times!!! This trend has to STOOOP.
Prefix it tbl_table_name for all i care ffs.15 -
Man I wish we could have here some kind of poll - you know to ask a question and see what people think.
It will be kinda awesome
think about it guys10 -
I'm the first in 3 generations not be some sort of pipeline/mechical engineer. All my family works at the same company too.
I was partially accepting because at least a software engineer is some kind of engineer.
...And than my cousin graduated to be a gym teacher so I was then fully accepted 😂3 -
I'm kind of disgruntled that I've only worked with one ninja level developer in my career (small market) and he was an insane dick. Despite my hatred, I treated him kindly and respected him. I wanted to learn from him but he didn't want to teach.
Ninja devs, don't be that guy.6 -
Hey there devRanters!
In a rants comments I came to the idea (yet again) of doing a kind of devRant meetup in the Netherlands! Would any fellow dutchies be in for this and if yes, lets discuss some details in the comments!123 -
The reality of mental illness is too much for some. Do something kind and reach out to someone who is struggling but not asking for help. If everyone just reaches out to one person a massive difference can be made.1
-
This kind of message doesn't let me sleep, I go to bed with the fear to be hacked for hadn't updated2
-
I'll never ever understand how my boss always ends up doing this kind of bullshit
This is production code, there won't ever be anything in there, NEVER9 -
I wish there was some kind of "Close as Duplicate" function for rants like there is on Stack Overflow... tends of be a lot of reposts of the same memes.8
-
Client: I want it to be a black color.
Me: but this is black
Client: Not this black, I want the kind of black you see when I turn off my TV
Me: :/2 -
What kind of fucktard thought it was a good idea to include html in their API endpoint? 3€ per 1000 requests? YOU should be the one paying me to deal with this shit. Even enforcing class classnames...3
-
Getting a static IP has become a kind of a status symbol, my friends are paying extra bucks to ISPs so during parties they can be like `Hey Yo, Ping me at 27.49.36.16 , it's static!` :/8
-
Damnit...
I'm kind of a perfectionist, which is one of the reasons why I don't post here very often.
I think that my posts have to be the most hilarious or creative ones to even be bothered to be read by anyone.
Now.. I'm kind of not sober, so I'll just write some idéas, jokes and rants in notes on my iPad.. Sleep, and get drunk again tomorrow and maybe post them...
Or maybe just delete this post and be ashamed tomorrow?
I at least posted this under the "Joke/Meme" tag so that people won't be offended, hopefully, by this "none-rant".5 -
Internships are fucking bullshit and if more senior developers were to take the role of an actual mentor to coach juniors properly then the state of software engineering would be better.
Some people can be let down easy in terms of "this is not for you bruh", others can be built. I know that social interactions are not common for a lot of the morons in here, but being polite and kind is relatively simple if you know what you are doing. Being a dickhead != "royal levels of expertise" and if we were to coach more people into proper development practices then software would not be in such a shitty state.
For an environment that thrives in cooperation I find it hard to believe that we are still subjecting new people to the field to what can be considered slavery with little to actual no monetary compensation.
I removed many of the requirements for the application to a software developer job where I am at (I am the boss, I get to do shit like that) and my fight with HR was "I would rather someone fresh from college that I can coach properly than some dickhead with years on the field that won't listen to anything else than their own words"
Sure it would be slow, sure it would be hard, nothing ever is that simple, but my idea is "train this mkfer, level the fuck out of him, let him be off to great shit rather than giving him to some dickhead that will treat him like shit on account of being a newbie"
And yes, I do know how and what can go bad, I am going to have someone desinging shit in basic html/js/css with some php here and there not giving them the keys to every server I control. Thank you for your fucking concerns, I know what I am doing.
the experiment fails? GOOD more data for me.
Plus, you learn more when you teach others.16 -
It'd be really cool if devRant had some kind of cli tool for random rants during the workday direct from the terminal. Imagine being able to do:
$ dr 'fuck this shit'9 -
Me: Ah, just have to finish this one small feature today and this whole massive update is done. Everyone will be off my back, things will calm down. Gonna be great.
Life: hey man, you know what I was thinking? It’s been a really long time since you had one of those vomiting bugs ... you know the gut wrenching, massive headache, can’t do anything but stare at the walls kind of flu’s?
Me: ...... eh I’m ok thanks.
Life: oh buddy you don’t understand ...... RUN!!!2 -
Took a side job for 1/4 of the price it should cost for a friend.
Kind of pissed off because it should be $4,000 for the hours I’m spending (80 hours) and losing valuable time with my friends and family5 -
I used to love windows and hated Mac
Then I started using MacBook
Now I don’t like windows at all. I don’t like windows laptops either.
I really didn’t want to be this kind of person who liked Mac and doesn’t like windows laptops
But now I have become this person.....14 -
Hi.. Recently I began my career in IT firm but my work doesn't involve coding.
But I really aspire to become an programmer. I have been always searching playstore for apps related to programming.
Google play suggested me devRant. I installed it and found that it is the right place for me.
I hope you guys will be helpful and kind.
Thanks Guys !!!5 -
setting up email2print kind of setup for office, Its an internal hackathon happening.. gave up last night when no jobs were being printed.. tried all debugging, logs, whatever came to the sleepy mind. Just woke and started again. found this gold on stackkverflow "check the printer cable, it might be faulty".. oh man!! finally some progress

If you dish out the same shit you inherited from your senior colleagues onto your juniors, you have just successfully become the part of an ongoing shit show.
Be kind and supportive. Earn their trust, be approachable. Listen to them and help them learn to solve problems. Give constructive feedbacks, not harsh criticisms. Point out room for improvements, not belittle someone. Be that mentor/teacher you wish you had.
Learn. Build. Teach. Grow5 -
I am of the firm belief that a function should always return just one type.
I think it's the most convoluted thing that a function should be allowed to return any kind of type.
I've seen shit like return a string when something is valid and then a boolean if it's not valid.
To me, that kind of flexibility has some funky code smell.
I'm looking at you WordPress 🤨11 -
.net 1.1 had the best documentation ever written. Microsoft spent an enormous amount of money and a dedicated team of skilled engineers just to write them. It was kind of a great time to be a developer, even though the technology is much better now. The current reliance on community docs doesn't hold up as well.2
-
I find it kind of sad how many people think coding seems boring. Personally I find it's a perfect mix of having to be logical and creative at the same time. I need both, and can't imagine doing anything else.
-
I work at a startup. My boss wants me to work on a project which will create a lot of value because it will be one of it's kind. So it will become a part of the company's IP.
Should I ask for equity (to be provided on completion) before I start working on that?
If yes, how do I ask without being offensive?11 -
It's impressive how much root can actually get you, that's debian running xfce on my lg g3 and chromium.
It's always nice to know that you can have a portable server etc. straight from your phone. I even used that kind of setup as a portable laptop some time ago and it worked quite well.
What things did you do via chrooted linux on android devices? would be interesting to know if somebody maybe is still using it as some kind of laptop as I did.13 -
- build a self-service shell script to manage your environment in all kinds of ways with a single script and different switches
- ask tech manager for a server to keep that script [and others] at so coleagues should not bother setting dependencies up on their windows workstations
- be asked to list out all use cases
- be promissed your consolidated tool will be torn apart and replaced by 8 other tools depending on use-cases. Meaning 8 different browser windows open at all times to manage your single env
- be assured that this kind of improvement will take months and is doubtful to pay off2 -
I just misread Cinco de Mayo as Cisco de Mayo and started imagining what kind of party Cisco de Mayo would be....6
-
Why do people think it is weird to have job (programming) also be your hobby?!?
I get annoyed with this kind of people, if I like what I do, and have spent infinite amount of hours enjoying while learning, I think it is normal to have job as your hobby. Or even better phrasing, it is normal to have hobby as your job!!!4 -
Currently in 3 degrees bachelor in internship to be analyst-developper, yesterday my teacher came in the company where I do my internship and the man who supervise me said to him that I was just "perfect" I am the kind of person that they dream to hire, that's cool it makes me happy, but unfortunately the team is full :-/2
-
I am actually kind of starting to see reacts usefulness and opportunities, but just can't let go the thought that many are blocking javascript, so those would be barred from the resulting site, doesn't that bother anybody else? or is that just generally ignored?14
-
Why I can't be a politician? Because I would be that kind of guy who will definitely end this pandemic by suggesting the public to have their lung surgically removed.
I am a software engineer , I often remove cable from my local server and plug back in and it works. So I conclude , I can't be a politician.8 -
About to have damn near an entire month lf vacation. If i do something code related it will be with the only language that is kind to my heart and soul: Ruby.
weeeeeee8 -
What is this 'cutting edge dev tech' y'all talking about? Does it count if I somehow manage to add support for MS Edge?? 🤔
Hell.. I'm stuck with COM+ & activex, so if anyone who gets to use fancy pants new techs would be so kind to ping me and let me know how it even feels to code like it's 21st century, that'd be great..2 -
You may always feel behind. You aren’t alone. Find something you enjoy within coding. Don’t be a hero and pick all the tickets. Pick what you can achieve. Pick a long-term ticket that you can call yours and own it and learn from it.
BE KIND YO YOURSELF.2 -
this is my legacy code, it's stupid, Change my mind.
a large number of lecturer and friends are against my thought. personally, i think this kind of code is told to be an OOP yet this is against the OOP concept. why ? first you assign the field to be private, but you implement Getter and Setter method later on, this is the same if you assign the field to be public in the first place.
another minor thing; yes this is old me, i use Bahasa Indonesia as a variable name.31 -
What kind of seizure of insanity led the devs of Python to believe that static, mutable default parameters could be a good idea? You can literally share whole arrays between multiple calls of the same function with the same input, and the number of cases where a sane person would intentionally want to do that is FUCKING ZERO.4
-
I used to check what local market wants, but after joining devRant I noticed local market sometimes feels in stone age, so since February 2017, devRant is best place to learn either asking, or checking what others are doing it a helps in getting ideas on what kind of project and language needs to be done for the sake of learning
-
I fucking hate this low level programming shit. The fucking buffer overflow attacks and the whole understanding of the system architecture just goes over my mind. Can anyone who has found relatively useful resources be kind enough to refer them to me so my stupid mind can understand that better?15
-
Hey devRant! It's been a long time, but I'm baaack! I know you missed me, but my life has been so eventful, and difficult, and so I am here for sympathy and recognition of my status among my fellow devRant community, because like, I'm basically a legend now, I'm sure you've all heard of me!
Did I mention I'm back!? I know right, it's mad, it's like the place hasn't been the same without me. What has changed? Man, I remember when devRant was a toddler colouring in my walls with crayon, man those were the days...
Oh, have any of you seen @OtherLongtimeUser about, are they still alive? Come on guy, we were like best buddies, and your existence validates my sense of self-worth in relation to my status on this here community. You about?
Anyway, life's been hard, I'm sure you're all desperate to hear about it... Looking forward to you asking me about it in the comments so that I can skirt around the answer for you whilst still trying to extract the maximum amount of sympathy. But yea, just tell me you've missed me, that'd be fantastic.
Also, I bet the banter on here isn't like it used to be. All you n00bs missed so much. But hey, did I mention, I'm baaaaack!? ✌4 -
I don't know why is that everytime you guys find a security bug or a data leak or that someone is saving plain passwords on their database, you try to cover and censor the company name. Listen people, fuck the company and their name and their brand if someone's data might be in danger. Everybody should be aware of what is happening with their personal information.
Also, maybe would be great if devRant would let users to post anonymous rants for this kind of issues or a special thread with latest news about our online security.3 -
If you're going to look for junior devs on facebook... make sure you don't try to be funny and write any kind of bullshit-code.. there is a f**king space in the function name! Dude....
Text says:
"Rieke Computersysteme is looking for you!
void send Application () { ... }"9 -
!rant.
I think i joined devRant back in October and since then it has become my most used app. Its so great to be under the same of its kind! And even though I don't have something to rant about at the moment, I am gonna support all those ranters with my ++'s! I already ++'t over a thousand rants and won't stop!5 -
I UNDERSTAND POINTERS (kind of) HAHAHAHA NOW I JUST NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE THEM AND I WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE15
-
I really don't get why people get offended by things like the little Santa's hat at the setting options in VSCode, I mean this kind of thing should be not relevant in this type of context, they just try to give a little reminder about the current holidays.
Anyway all believes are respectful, but at this rate, everything we do will be offensive.
https://github.com/microsoft/...9 -
I find it very strange and telling when people tell me that a dev shouldn't "re-invent the wheel", "roll your own" or "leave it to the experts" while simultaneously promoting substandard own-rolled projects by other people that simply got popular.
Kind of a strange elitist double standard that encourages a bad mindset of "I can't be as good as them" and it's toxic.
If you wanna make your own framework / package / etc, just do it, it might even be better.7 -
I found a great app on iOS that allowed me to clone my Git repo, make commits, change branches, it had everything! I made a small commit and went to push to the remote server, but then it told me that I had to purchase premium to be able to push to remote. I was kind of upset, but I went to check the price of premium, in case it was a few cents. Nope, $25 just to be able to push commits. Seriously? If I was at my computer I’d be able to do this for free.7

I kind of want to learn Japanese. I want to be able to watch untranslated anime and understand what they are saying.4

Some customers are nice.
Ive been working with a customer to enable a feature in the database. It was tough, because the escalation from support was your standard 'Customer wants apples in the T-1000, please do the needful'. After several emails back and forth we reach an agreement about what needs to be done.
This is something I'm sure can't be done. I test it in my local install, yep, confirmed that's normal behaviour. The customer, however, is stalwart - he's suggesting changes to the database that would potentially give him what he needs. I figure if he's going to this much effort, I'll confirm with our product specialist to see if there's a way around it.
Five minutes later I'm emailing the customer with an apology as I have unwittingly never known of, or committed to memory, the existence of a distinctly non-hidden check box that enables this exact function. I pass this box several times a week at least, and I've worked on this software for two and a half years. Never have I needed to use it, so my brain just processed it as background imagery.
The customer just responded with the kindest email absolving me of my sins, thanking me for my humbleness and for my time.
I want him to have more problems so I can work with him more.2 -
Smalltalk looks like an OO language done right. History rarely seems to be kind to well designed languages.2
-
Me: "Some kind of algebra library would be really useful for this code/math course I'm doing, but it'd be hard to write"
Python devs: "Is this what you're looking for?"
https://www.sympy.org/en/index.html
Me: Yes. I'm now conflicted, coz on one hand I'm like, "I don't want to use any external hard to use libraries because that's the point of teaching it... But this makes the math easier to understand..."18 -
Being treated as some kind of alien, when in fact it's something that can be learnt just as easily as anything else.2
-
I don't know about you, but I have Stack Exchange's app installed in my phone just in case. I never use it, but it's there for an emergency (I don't know what kind of emergency, to be honest, but you never know...)1
-
Why do I do this, it's 05:45 and I'm just about to leave for site it's a 3 hour drive if traffic is kind. By the time I get home it will be 20:30 hours at least. Grr long days3

Just had a very "OMG WTF!" kind of mini conversation with my co-founder, of a web dev startup.
Him: So what's LastPass then?
Me: It's a secure password management system.
Him: So let's use LastPass instead of Dropbox then. :-)
** quickly searches dropbox for passwords **
A little knowledge can be extremely dangerous if left unsupervised. -
WTF with all this full screen popup to promote a mobile app on so many perfectly functional mobile/responsive websites. If I'm the developer of that mobile website and asked to add that kind of popup to my work, I'd be offended.1
-
So my friend told me that he recommended me to be a new Creative Engineer.
-Oh shit, sweet, what are the requirements?
-I don't really understand that kind of stuff man, just look it up, here' the link
*Hmmm*
-Html,
*ok*
-Css,
*mhmm*
-Javascript
*sure*
etc etc...
and,
Actionscript

Excuse me?
Who the FUCK use actionscript nowadays ???2 -

Do you guys know any website that challenges you into coding little programs (for me, php) to solve problems ?
I mean, it would be to train my skills with actual kind of real world problems, not just hello worlds or simple "how-to" codes.
I signed up to a contest recently and I felt really dumb not to be able to find solutions faster or with more efficiency (FYI : I was ranked 1049/2300 all languages included :( )11 -
Ok, let's see if this works. https://quora.com/What-kind-of-jobs...
A great article to inspire those who want to be type 2. Never give up.3 -
I hate when different IDE's and actually softwares have different hotkeys. I need to set up every single one of them so they can mach everywhere. There should be some kind of rule for hotkeys. 😡2

Does anyone else feel kind of bad for Twitter at the moment?
They are trying all sorts but don't seem to be able to find something sustainable.5 -
Every now and then I attend to previews with clients, and almost every time the clients make me think : "they can't be so stupid? Can they? And I start thinking that there should be some kind of minimum brain use time to allow people to wake up the next morning."
The worst part for me : the clients should be engineers... They might even have some kind of engineer degree...
Depresing afternoon.
On the bright side, one of my mentoree handled a denied of service error so fucking swiftly! He's amazing!! -
That would be Sony.
Mainly because the of PlayStation 4. I mean what kind of company blocks the access to third party’s account so you can use it only on their console (the Fortnite situation). That’s literally saying “we own you, bitch”. Even Apple doesn’t do that kind of crap.
Fuck Sony and their PlayStation. I’m sticking with Xbox. Yes, it doesn’t have as many of exclusives. Yes, it’s made by Microsoft - the same company which made Windows 10. But fuck Sony even more than them.2 -
So this one is interesting.
As I have mentioned on my site, I'd be one of the below:
1. Anthropologist
2. Archaeologists
3. Sound engineer
4. Musician or Artist of some kind
5. Travel guide
6. Museum curator
7. Or maybe own & run a Burger joint with Rock n' Roll playing all day
After spending much time in front of screen, I felt like would on field job be better for me, in terms of physical and mental well being?10 -
How do such people even breathe???
Does somebody here know whether comments of this kind can be generated by an IDE?
I have to assume they used PhpStorm due to some hints in some files.13 -
!rant I agreed to be interviewed for a podcast for a developer community I’m part of and it’s scheduled for tomorrow morning and I’m kind of freaking out.
Also, procrastinating writing a bio and submitting a photo. Still. I was asked to do the interview almost a month ago. 😅8 -
This is the kind of shit that I don't want to write.
The kind of shit that should be in an STL so I never have to include it in a project.
Because it doesn't belong in a project.
And it doesn't belong in a dependency tree either.
It belongs in a language. -
I am going to make a prediction. C++ and Rust will be pitted against each other in a political manner. C++ will be likened to far right and Rust will be likened to far left.
It won't make sense, but it will be used to try and make language choice some political garbage. Rather than technical merits. There is already a Boomers use C/C++ and enlightened programmers use Rust kind of thing going. End of prediction.
DARPA has decided there is a consensus of programmers saying C needs to be replaced by Rust or some bullshit. Whenever I see "consensus" I automatically read "we decided for you".10 -
Feeling sleepy now.
Gracious, would you be so kind to take a screenshot of my 1234 passing and post it here?
That'd be huge! Thanks4 -
Thought experiment time:
Imagine that this whole universe is a simulation created by a Group Of Developers (GOD).
- Who would make up this group?
- What kind of design patterns would they follow?
- What type of programming language would they use?
- What kind of bugs are there if any?
- How do they test?
- Assuming the use of quantum computing, what are the implications? Parallel simulations? All possibilities play out?
- Would the controller input be life?
- Who is AI and who are players?
- Has all time already been rendered?
- Do we respawn?
- What would the leaderboard look like?
- What kind of stats are tracked
- What are dreams, nightmares, lucid dreams, sleep paralysis, birth and death?
- How is memory stored, accessed and pruned?
- What kind of neural net is used and where?
etc etc, if you can think of any other interesting fire away8 -
I had a coworker that NEVER restarted his computer or installed updates of any kind. Any time he showed me some code I got distracted by the "new updates are available" popup that was always there in his IDE.
I can't even imagine the backlog of critical security updates that were waiting to be installed when we left after 3 years.3 -
Looks like ESLint is all confused about my tabs and spaces. I've never seen this kind of error message where it expects the tabs to be the same number as the spaces indentation? I have it configured for 1 tab = 2 spaces.
So confused. Must fix. Red squiggles make my blood hurt.7 -
Two friends of mine (one of which actually introduced me to devRant) refuse to post on here.
...there's no need to explain that I want them to enjoy devRant (at it's full potential) with me but they don't see a point in writing.
Would you be so kind and give them some motivation/reasons in the comments? What's the point of dev-ranting?9 -
Would anyone be interested in me setting up a series of puzzles for the people here on devRant? Kind of in a Cicada 3301 fashion, but without any of the mystery around it. Just a series of puzzles that you would all unite to try and break. I'd be happy to make that, but I'd also like to have a preview of how many people would be interested in it.8
-
!rant
Hmm... so I was thinking...
What if devRant implemented a feature that lets you get rants into some kind of list, accessible via your profile? Kind of like the "Watch later" list on YouTube, or playlists. I know we have a "Favourites" list of rants, already, on devRant, but being organized about this might be a good idea.
What do you think?3 -
I must be some kind of retard to think that a fallback font would actually handle the characters not handled by the previous fonts.
I hate configuring fonts so fucking much4 -
The year is 2035 and HR checks your rants to see what kind of employee you will be :D lord save us.1
-
I have *created* a new team member :) I think he alone could replace most of the team.
Kind of makes you think what have we been doing with our time all those years. If all that work can be automated :/5 -
Swift 5.9 will get huge additions to the language, compared to the current version 5.8, including type safe and checked macros much like in Rust.
And it’s still not going to be a major version bump to 6.0!
I’m thrilled to see what kind of stuff will be in 6.0 then! 😄2 -
People who delete a repo and clone again instead of a hard reset because 'they can't undo the changes they made" are the kind of people who shouldn't be using git in the first place.4
-
@dfox, @trogus, would you consider adding the topic for next week to be "Near miss: how I almost lost all my code/data"?
It sould be fun, and people can also learn something. Like what not to do, how to recover and how to prevent this kind of stuff...1 -
I created an undefined rant. And it never received any attention. I shouldn't be surprised, but I'm a little surprised. Kinda cool. I could create entirely public but unnoticeable rants.
Kind of like my life

I am not a US citizen or an expert in law, so my questions are:
- Do you think this RESTRICT act that will potentially ban VPN use will be passed?
- Is the restriction only applied to those who use Tiktok or general use?
- Corporates also use some kind of internal VPN, is this included in the ban?
- How much dumber the gov is trying to be?
https://beincrypto.com/vpn-users-ri...7 -
Generator functions should be treated like sorting algorithms: Not worth your time if all you have is 4 or less async instructions.
Callback hell is actually kind of nice and warm when you're a just a few levels down. If you're really confused by your obfuscated code, you suck at node. -
* Fix sleep schedule
* Eat better and gain 20 pounds
* Don't yell at future contributors
* Be very kind to everyone except that one "client"
* Review every PR with patience except that ones from that "client" because I am a petty maintainer
* You'll never understand the pain, "client". Be a human or eat shit.
* Maybe be a maintainer at a different open source project so I don't have to deal with script kiddies 24/7
* Fix sleep schedule so I won't be dev ranting at 6am3 -
My Girlfriend's birthday is coming up this month as we are in long distance kind of stuff so i was thinking to give a surprise to her.I was thinking to make a Birthday Countdown App.It will show the special message on her birthday and the second surprise will be a in-app chatbox were only we can chat.
Is this a good idea?8 -
As a user getting warnings and errors containing the word "unknown" it can be kind of frustrating, but as a programmer I can relate...1

What kind of savage uses a 900kb background image in PNG format on a web app?!
Come on, it's 2024 and we have WebP, the users are in Africa with shitty internet connections, be a little more mindful of bandwidth.7 -
Me: Interview is in 3 hours, I'm prepared, it's non technical anyway, just be yourself.
Brain to me: What the fuck is big 'O' notation? Objects you mean chairs? Turing? That's some kind of robot right?
Also me: fuck....1 -
Coding distraction
To be honest - task distraction
1. Starting a task, you need to do
2. finding old code you want to refactor
2. Doing some improvements
3.Fixing the bugs created by prev actions
....
Task not finished
But that's kind of fun. Livin' on the edge2 -
When customers start a project with your company and you're the one to create the software, then after a while the communication kind gets kind of placebo'd down until there is hardly any communication and your contact only replies to / mails you every 12 weeks or so and then after almost 1 year they urge you to get their shit done asap, telling you it'd better be done yesterday but you still lack information you asked for in one of your mails.
Fun fact: the record of them not responding was 20 weeks. -
Hey guys. I am pretty new here and also kind of young in real life (not finished with school yet).
I wanted to ask you guys, as what you are working and whether you like it or not, since I'll be graduating in a year and I'd really like some motivation on what to study/what profession to go after.32 -
Best part of being a dev is that you get to be part of an amazing community like devRant.
Also the kind of jokes and stories devs get to share and laugh about is beyond anything. 😍 -
So I've been back to work for 2 weeks after going on a holiday. Getting back into the flow of things was easy, but seeing the status of the project that I am a part of, and seeing the kind of implementation work that my co-workers has done, it's kind of a no surprise.
So the past 2 weeks I've been completing features that I left my co-workers to finish, but didn't. And rewriting other features that they worked on, but does not meet the specifications.
Will I ever be able to work with reliable/competent developers? -
This is what I’ve got on LinkedIn today People are getting creative, not sure how to respond to that. I am curious to see what this scam is all about 🤷♂️
Dear PappyHans,
I hope this email finds you well and safe. My name is **** and I work for ******, a leading expert network company based in New York. I am currently working with a client who is conducting a project and needs expertise on Digital Engineering - ***** .
After some research I did regarding the topic, I concluded that you would be a great fit for this project, given your experience.
Please, let me know if you would be willing to share your expertise on this subject through a paid phone consultation. For your input and time, you will be compensated with a fee that you can set yourself. As a reference – the average rate of our consultations is around 400$/hour.
It is essential to note that in no way will you be asked to discuss your current employer nor any kind of confidential information during the phone consultation.
Should you be interested in this subject, I would be more than happy to address any questions regarding the topic on LinkedIn or by phone
Kind Regards

@dfox seems so be some kind of humanoid bot, going through all rants it didn't ++ and ++ each of them with a chance of 35%.😅5
-
- participate in more exciting projects
- be more mindful about the time and mental resources I put in my projects
- find out what kind of dev I want to be -
There's deep solace for me in knowing devrant, and particularly its icker users (👀), will be dead in the ground in 60-70 years 🪦⚰️🥀
All this will be gone and deleted like a footprint on a beach.
Say what you wanna say people - unless you're not a kind person4 -
Hi my named bluescreen and I'm addicted to coding ....
Feel like I should be at some kind of Coders AA meeting .....
I'm having a few days off work, this is my 3rd day and I'm already twitching because I've not got my daily fix of coding (wife won't let me near a computer when I'm on holiday)
I've never had any kind of addiction except coding. I feel really uncomfortable not doing anything, coding is my job and hobby.
I normally come on here to rant / read posts but today I'm browsing just on the off chance that I see some code ....
I need help ......6 -
Im thinking of posting/recomending games here on devrant, the kind if games i'll be posting are mostly; indie games, low spec games, and games that'll get you hooked on for days.
What do you guys think?
Go easy on me.2 -
Estimating a rather simple looking project without a thorough examination of the client's code.
It turned out to be the worst kind of crap a human brain could produce. The project we estimated for 2 months is going to last 6... And if we decided to rewrite it the day we were to estimate it, it would be done in 6 weeks1 -
Good to be back at work.
But kind of annoying when you check the server and it turns out that the 3rd Party API fell over and the guy responsible for it is still in holidays.. -
I see all IT engineers running scared like "they're going to fire/replace all of us". This is the kind of mentality the company wants.
Next time you wanna be an ass to your colleague remember that. Neither of you might reach retirement age. Both of you will be replaced. None of you stands to gain anything from winning the argument2 -
time to go for full snack development

https://youtu.be/y4w5E8W2f0M
started some open source project for discord bot that provides info for some free game users, through scrapping forum and requesting apis
This is kind of going to be a major refactorized second version, that considers all mistakes of a first version. And going to be much more scalable and easy to maintain.6 -

Gotta start learn react. Only two frontends in my company know react and it seems my Vue knowledge don't mean nothing... I'm kind of excited, mainly because for a long time I wanted to make mobile apps and with react native I'll be able to do so.4 -
Grub....😠
Not the edible kind.
Randomly decides to stop working and needs to be reinstalled...Ubuntu workstation at work. Ugh. -
No wonder it’s hard to hire devs with even a basic level of competency or some kind of promise that them might be able to learn shit given time, opportunity and guidance. The sheer amount of idiocy and stupidity and straight up incompetent cringe I witness on every platform giving us devs a voice (yes, including here) is mindboggling…4
-
Got a mac to use for work, and to be honest, I never thought that I would say this... I kind of like it.. The gripe I have with mac's is that it's not user upgradable having the ssd and ram soldered on. If this weren't the case I would probably buy one myself6
-
Was wondering what kind of workflow you use.
My team is currently a big unorganized chaos...
Our manager wants us to take the form of:
Feature idea -> Design -> Build -> Test -> Train (explain to users how to use it) -> Deploy
The `Train` step is something rather odd to me, as that would mean teaching every single employee how to use the product we're making.
Wouldn't it just be better to skip the `train` section (and maybe use some kind of wiki?) and try to make everything as clearly labeled and obvious as possible?6 -
Every student here has to write an essay about some kind of voluntary work he / she did while studying and how the knowledge can be used in your (future) job.
I did train and educate kids at sports. In the end I've compared those kids with a group of software developers which has to be educated, too (e.g. in their manners).2 -
Learnt Python Fundamentals while taking a dump...
It might have been due to being in a vulnerable state during that time but I am kind of enjoying the simpletons' language..
Must go to a Doctor for a brain examination... 🤨
I should be concerned -
Have a question about company (startup) stocks.
I’m going to work in a startup and build a product I actually believe in. I’ll be vague, but it’s environment focused for profit platform. Anyways, I’ll be the first software engineer. They’ve just hired a CTO.
I loved talking with the CEO and he assured me that the stock options will definitely not be symbolic.
What can I expect? What’s too little or too much? I’ve never received stocks from any kind of company.
Excited though.7 -
I feel a bit like shit.
I started a new job about 2 months ago. Company is great, culture is amazing, project is interesting, processes are what i always dreamed.
This is after having learned the job from scratch at a startup that was all you can imagine. Tedious, hoping to be something that was not yet and so on....
So we are coming at the last week of a sprint. Its Tuesday and most stories are competed. We dont have a culture of jumping on others PR, its kind of like this is my PR kind of mentality. This is not established its more like an untold rule. But coming to the end i figured, especially if i knew exactly how to fix the PR that o should jump in a make it happen.
Person who owns those prs unassigned themselves from those and added me instead kind of like: “well take it if you want it....”
What are your rules regarding others prs and sprints?4 -
I really like the quality of the devrant stickers and I'd like to order some from the same place for my startup. Would @dfox be so kind as to let me know the supplier? Much appreciation in advance. :)2

Its time to remind ourselves the wonderful time of the year, where people look back and decide to be better and learn from your mistakes...
For example never test in prod and wake me up with notifications you dumbfucks... Someone has exams to do..
Seriously, I have seen a lot of push notifications lately, its some kind of Letstestinprod-uary?1 -
There's only three endgame situations I can imagine: Become fuel for AI's projects, become some kind of pet or archived memorabilia thing stored in a vat of amniotic fluid, or merge brain and be human-AI hybrid.
Don't know if the concept of "job" is still meaningful in any of those scenarios.4 -
Haven’t written code in months. Is this what it means to be a “senior developer”?
I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse tho. I kind of feel it’s the former 🤣🤣🤣4 -
Just ordered 3 new setups for our upcoming office - parts will arrive next week, absolutely hyped 😍
Each setup includes Ryzen 7 2700X, 16GB TridentZ RAM, Samsung EVO 970 M2 SSD, RX 570 Armor 8GB, Be quiet CM 10 600W, 3x Riing 12 coolers, NZXT H500 case. Also a 4K 27" Samsung Monitor and a 29" LG Ultrawide. Kind of overkill for office PCs, but as we're also hobby game developers and had kind of a budget, we figured it will fit our needs more than enough 😄 Pictures of the builds coming up soon!9 -
What level of skill should I have before applying for jobs as a Junior Developer?
What kind of programs should I be making?4 -
One week ago Google overhauled their "Now News". The news have unnecessary categories over the title, can't be swiped away anymore and some cards are way bigger than others.
At least now its proven that this kind of news is advertised shit and no more independant.

Why does everyone here call Linux "GNU/Linux"?

I think their should be like tests or any kind of competition on coding kind of thing in devrant.
Or tips related to coding no matter any language most common mistakes etc. That's my idea tho😅😅😅

Joined a company 7 months back, was told they would be hiring other Android developers; a prospect I was excited by as I have not had the chance to work alongside my own kind.
Still no one hired, I'm the only Android dev and I'm still teach and working by myself. What should I do?!3 -
A serious question: what kind of stack should I choose so I can run a web backend installing no deps whatsoever? I know that Perl works on ubuntu out of the box. Anything else? Maybe Python?
Also, what can be used to replace a reverse proxy like nginx? And what kind of database is available out of the box?9 -
Was helping out a friend yesterday with word macros.
Never did that stuff before, but thought, it can't be that hard...
It took me almost 3 hours to figure out, how to fill a fucking textbox based on if a checkbox is selected or not. was also kind of a throwback to MFC Applications (because of how bad the UI was)3 -
Sometimes it seems kind of paradoxal to think that us, developers, feel crazy and excited about doing things with bigdata, artificial inteligence and so on, but at the same time we hate to be tracked and studied by large corps - using, many times, equivalent tools

If all programming languages came with a paired condiment, what would some be?
I reckon C would be some kind of hot sauce that was just ground naga chili or something3 -
Oh, hello dear PO. You suddenly wanted a change to be done after being silent for months?
Silly, silly you. I'm not some kind of rack you drag out of the closet whenever it suits you.
I am now assigned to another project. Your project can't be completed for months, and it ain't my fault. -
Isn't pair programming kind of stupid in a workplace environment when you pair a junior and senior?
In that you that you pair someone that would be able to solve the task himself and one that needs still help to solve the task.
Why shouldn't the junior struggle on his own a bit before asking questions?6 -
Tech Lead = "Super quick question" + "one small doubt" back to back for 8 hours, then coding in the evening because making some progress is the only way to take the stress away. Rinse and repeat, while slowly developing an alcohol dependency. Be kind to your leads, kids.4

HALP!
So, I have a phone interview for a job that is basically the same job I have now, but they use c# instead of Java.
I'm only a year into my first programming job, and I'm not really sure what kind of questions they're going to be asking during this interview.
Anyone have any good examples?9 -
I recently graduated and got a full time job at a startup I really like. The software team is fairly small (less than 10 people) and they are all significantly older than me (8+ years). Definitely feels weird being a young-whipper snapper
Also kind of feels like I shouldnt be here. Not enough experience to contribute effectively you know4 -
When I was working as a mentor in my last job, everything new I leared were hardened by teaching it to someone else. Now I am working as a software developer and I feel the necessity of teaching. If I had a chance, I would go back to be a part-time mentor again just for the sake of that kind of productivity.
-
Hey developer community.
Need to ask you all something.
Do you consider "To be good at competitive programming" or even experienced at that, with some kind of benefit in your fields ? Maybe even that can help in getting job interviews which are rather difficult to score by applying online. Just need y'all two cents. :)2 -
New day, new rant...
Yesterday was this: https://devrant.com/rants/1121939/...
So my daughter feels better, and I am getting ready for work, but alas, now my son has a fever.
I'm thinking having children and programming don't get along together...2 -
A certain company:
1) Forbids to run its proprietary operating system on hardware that is not produced by the company itself (BTW sold extremely overpriced). Virtual machines included.
2) Makes laptops with wrong and unusable keyboard layouts.
3) Does not sell any kind of servers that can be mounted on a rack.
Why should any open source project waste resources and time to support it? They should just be left alone with their crappy software and their overpriced hardware.4 -
*edits CSS on website with dev console to make it usable*
your website is bad and you should feel bad. Inb4 I setup some kind of persistent script for this website in particular. Probably gonna be a necessary quality of life thing now that nobody can seemingly write any competent software anymore.2 -
This indicates what I often ask myself when posting a rant.. but could be used for example for feature requests, too. 😋
The song is quite horribly though.. was kind of a running gag during my studies. A friend reminded me of it a couple of days ago and my mind directly associated it with @dfox 😛3 -

From my last rant, I'm now looking for Jobs.
I heard that a few people from here work in startups. Just wondering what your xp with these kind of companies are.
Also looking for some good critical questions that I may be able to ask.
I'm currently all about architecture, frontend and UI/UX1 -
days ago i used to be very lazy about writing tests.. after forcing me doing it, I ended up being addicted to high line coverage... kind of satisfiying AF

as a senior dev, what tasks do you expect from a fresher or junior? how much should he/she already know and how much are you willing to tell them? what would be the tasks that wold be handled by you only and what would be the stuff you think they should be doing?
I have started to look for my first job as an android dev now. would like to know what kind of environment i am about to get9 -
I am working on spring boot jwt project. Ive encoutered a UserDetails class name.
Why is it named UserDetails?? Where the fuck are those details??!! COZ I CANT SEE THEM
Those kind of methods can be found also in other various Services for example LocationService or UserService but none of them is called by developers for example LocationDetailsService. WHAT THE FUCK. Wouldnt it be better to name it UserSecurity???? -
A new job position in programming is going to crop up if programming tools can be created to replace lower tier programmers. It will be a programmer that can manage AI Programmers. Some kind of AI Manager that can sort through, direct, and review code written by code generators. I cannot imagine the shit this person will have to wade through.1

Kind of a vague question but has anyone done the Google and Microsoft tech interviews ? I’m preparing for them at the moment and I’m curious how hard these would be2
-
@dfox - yall should publish some metrics on devrant, maybe a punchcard graph for rants per minute? think it would be kind of cool to see how rapidly the community is growing2

I fucking hate those 2K 4K resolution designations. What kind of marketing shit is that? I understand putting that on entry level (or 'gaming') stuff, but the cancer seems to be spreading...

Sometimes, switching coding languages can be bad if they are the same "kind".
Found myself trying to use C# concept, keywords and syntax while doing Java.
That can be kinda frustrating when one is your main language at work and the other is just for side personnal project1 -
No idea if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I feel it would be really cool if @dfox could public some kind of stats for devRant (anonymous, but on things like post count per day, topics etc...)

I am a php developer having total 3years of experience.More than coding I love to debugging and troubleshooting kind of works. So I am thinking of about Devops career.
Is it will be a good decision?
What do you think?13 -

Thanks to all of you that gave me suggestions about my neighbours. I probably shouldn’t be surprised at how many of you that have shot neighbours as well, but damn. I am kind of baffled by how many shitty people there are.6

Timelines will shift because of my incomplete code. My senior will be pissed that I took so many days and delivered a simple code with no junits with a lot of conditions missing.
I am doing nothing. I am. preparing for a switch but I am feeling anxious again. I earlier also got a feedback that I ask for the feedbacks or suggestions very late, in this case my senior kept on saying that he'll review directly. This code review was expected to have problems but now the timelines are set. Although I knew that the iterations will be there, I did not put those in the timelines, I could not voice it out in front of my manager. I suck.
I never got a positive feedback here. NEVER. Looks like 2 people I need to closely work with are always pointing out the problems and I have lost my confidence and anxiety hits me hard.3 -
What kind of software you guys use for internal documentation? Currently we use Dropbox paper but I'm having doubts about it and I'd like to hear some suggestions.
It must support markdown (syntax highlighting would be nice) and I'd like it to be cloud hosted and free or at least cheap :)
I'm not explicitly looking for an alternative but should an awesome suggestion appear I'd switch over.6 -
my project would be to write clean and KISS code... not slap and green egg ham jam kind of sticky tape.

Today a colleague received a weird Excel message, it reads:
Unexpected error
Unfortunately a problem has occurred. Restart Excel, in case the problem persists.

It'd be interesting to see what kind of frowns are being sent there... :D4 -
Kind of thinking of making one of those COVID-19 infection simulators. Might be interesting to use a particle swarm type of algorithm for it.7

I'm currently struggling to pick between Vue and React for my next project. It will be a kind-of campus social network and will use Laravel.
I already know React but I'm wondering how well it goes with Laravel and wether I should use my time on Vue instead?
Apologies for being so vague but hopefully someone will understand. Thanks!9 -
A question to all software security specialists of devRant. Please, take it serious.
Is it fundamentally possible to restrict a SQL database like Postgres in a way that unintended SQL queries are impossible to execute? Perhaps in some kind of whitelist fashion. Is it possible to achieve the kind of security that will be just fine exposed to the outside world akin to "SQL queries in onClick handlers" scenario?
Or is this an uphill battle of never being able to moderate an infinite set of possible fraudulent queries?5 -
Anyone here a software engineer? What kind of stuff do you usually do?
I'm a full stack dev right now, but I'm studying se, and I'm curious about what I could be doing in the future.2 -
Hi,is anyone here a Software Tester by profession. It would be awesome to know what kind of work you are getting into as I consider it one of my career choices after I finish my degree.3
-
Working with a library developed by a koworker, which should be at its final release (and working). Every error code is -1, and the documentation explains it as "lol". I've spent the last hour reading ugly php code, with the only kind of comments being "sorry for this workaround, i had little time". I'm about to flip the table :<

Our college would be organising a tech fest soon. Any ideas on the kind of questions (related to tech) that we can include?7

What kind of side projects would you like to see from someone interviewing for a JavaScript (front end or backend) related role? If they started with tutorials but did something different is this okay? I also want to start something small, so I can stick with it, but I don't want it to be too small or lack complexity. Thoughts?6
-
I'm wondering if anyone worked in Microsoft as Data Labeler?
I'm supposed to have an interview in about a month, but since I stated that I know at least basics of C#, Java, and Python, they said I'd have different kind of interview.
I would appreciate any kind of advice, since I'm getting anxious cause I don't know what will be expected from me now cause u usually don't need any coding skills for that job
Edit: the new position is somewhat of an alpha tester I think5 -
Why some devs simply join the team, assess where they are positioned, and ALWAYS find ways to avoid doing work but to "lead/help" others... managers event encourage this kind of behavior that ends up harming productivity, examples of this:
- sharing "interesting" news of new technologies sometimes completely unrelated to the current stack
- informing about potential risks on libraries and versions
- infinite code reviews with stupid comments around how things should be done according to him/her
Is it just me ? or there will always be a newcomer with this kind of attitude? why managers can't see they are actually harming productivity?2 -
Anyone here work as a Data Scientist? If so would you be able to say what kind of things you get up to in an average day?13
-
I think it would be kind of fun to share the country of origin(optionally, of course). I've made it clear in the past that I live in Greece, and I've been wondering if there's anyone here living less than 200km away or something.
On the other hand, it could also be creepy, I don't know...4 -
Hello ranters.
I have a question. After beating my head about choosing a CMS for the first time, I am still not sure which CMS to use.
The website is supposed to be a portfolio, but the photographer/designer (client) does not have any idea on how to use HTML, which means he cannot update his website regularly.
For me, this first of a kind project.
Using WordPress makes using custom themes a pain.
Using NetlifyCMS, I kind of have to depend on GitHub.
Another idea is to create something similar to Instagram.....where the client can only add pictures.....what are your thoughts guys?....10 -
Have to wake up at 7am to be at the office at 9am. This is kind of the main hate about my job. Am I picky?8

Anyone wanna start a project of some kind?
I'm a noob but I'm willing to help and learn along the way. I just wanna get as much experience as possible.
Doesn't have to be big but something cool and fun. I'd really like to make a game for Android and IOS10 -
So I don't even know if I should be mad;
person hired at the same time as me has been given a kind of manager title, they do a lot of logistical (trello, department liaison) stuff, in addition to code. Were they promoted to manager? Or have they just given a bunch of non-code stuff to do, and I should be thrilled not to be bothered with it? -
Question:
trying to innovate your city...do you think it would be a good idea to bring together programmers for a common goal? what kind of projects would you build for your city?1 -
Here's a question, what kind of music does everyone listen to while coding? Personally it has to be a bit of Dylan or Red Hot Chilli Peppers8
-
So I've been reading about rest api and I purpose there should be a standardized keyword for message
like 'errorMsg', 'msg', or just 'message'
I m kind of tired of discovering new acronym for error message or message every time I write a REST service3 -
Is there anyone who successfully booted gentoo in aarch64 mode on the rpi 3? I can't get it to work. It gets onto the rainbow square then it shuts down like there is no kernel I guess. Sorry for asking here but there must be someone here who's kind enough to help.2

How often do you find job postings qualifications to be kind of a reach? For instance, if they say “minimum 3 years development experience,” and I’ve got 1, is it worth applying anyway?4
-
Have you thought that in case of apocalypse say EMP burst or anything huge enough hit our wet rock which lead to global & long power outage, our kind along electricians will be a valuable assets for any survival group. if 2 better, but if they are 3+ one will proclaim himself as PM and the chaos will be uneashed again ;}4

Stream of thoughts coming through
#justAthought 1
If you feel you are mentally unique (Not in retarded or disable kind of way, but having a different view of thinking, a different perspective, not-a-sheep-in-a-herd kind of mentality) , then you PROBABLY ARE, its just those who are not that mentally unique will find your thoughts absurd until you are proving yourself to be a successful person.
Even though you feel something is wrong in a current situation, and you can put some valid points in your argument, there would always come a point where your personal failures or average-ness would overshadow your valid points (kind of personal experience than a thought :/ )
#justAThought2 (Disclaimer: i am no fraud guru or priest, just a 9-5 curious , sleepless student-cum-professional)
I sometimes feel that the only good, meaningful goal that i could think for my life would be : to earn enough money to set up a small experiment environment , where I would initially take, around 25-30 people for 1-2 years. It would be an environment with totally $0 value for materialistic things like money, jewels, property, etc . Everyone is living free of tensions of basic services like food, clothes, house, taxes, work to live etc. Together we all will be collectively doing just these things: Making ourselves healthy , and more kind, spiritual towards other humans, animals, plants and environment, and thinking of ways to eradicate the value of "value".
We have already reached a point where we are generating even more harmful Technology than useful tech, how about changing the way of thinking and taking a small pause? I know a lot of people would be reluctant to do any work in such environment, but i believe one day or another, every one of these people has to come back to their usual jobs , but this time, not for money but for humanity.
Do you think this kind of environment is possible for the whole world? Because today most, if not all thinks that money is the ultimate goal. can we change that, and would that change be good?
#justAthought 3 (Disclaimer : 1. Its my mom's thought/whatsapp status , i kind off liked it. she is super religious by the way ^_^! | 2. more relevant for india/multi religious countries 3. for Indians: kind of thought from movie "oh my god")
There should be a regional law during so called "acts of god"(floods, earthquakes, other natural disasters) under which the donations given to religious places(temples, churches, mosques, etc) would be used to provide relief to affected areas.3 -
If your application uses OpenAI APIs, should your prompts go into version control? I reckon *some* kind of version for control for OpenAI prompts and configuration should be used as you improve and fine-tune them.5

Does anyone on here use the 3D software blender. What kind of Python do I need to learn (learned data analysis for internship but 80% sure won't be same as animation Python)1

TFW when you are coding an import for a client and their source data is an inexcusable mess that should be killed with fire. At least thrice.
Seriously, someone should be held responsible for this kind of crap. -
Today/tonight I dreamed of next gen laptop SoC/chip from (Huawei? or HP) that very small and has 16 TB of memory, then they introduced that they can be joined together like a puzzle and each of them can act like different kind of device, for example: GPU, CPU, NPU and extend port availability (dunno how)
Felt like something revolutionary6 -
!Rant. I've always loved good computer/hacking scenes from movies. It might even be because of them that I started studying computer science. Anyways, got any good movie tips containing these kind of awesome scenes?8

You guys who code in an office, what kind of keyboard are you using? I'm starting a new job and I guess a mechanical wouldn't be appreciated?10

During a conference call...
Client: How do we approach this issue?
Me: Reverting changes must be done on the business side-
Manager: But we can do it.
Me: Sir, I have no access for that process, only clients have that kind of access.
Manager: How can you revert changes if you don't have access?!?!?!
Me: ..... -
I started my new job. Apparently I am responsible for "Transfer Services" and the networking equipment installed in the plant.
The system works in the standard way that Warehouse Management Systems talks to one of our TS servers and they give instructions to underlying controllers, It's some kind of tcp relay. Does anyone from you worked on this layer? I am trying to find some resource on the internet about windows server running this kind of service can't find anything. I would like to do some research and prepare adequately. Would be nice to hear your opinion. Thanks. -

If anyone has pretender.io experience with IBM http server (yeah, you read it right), would you be kind enough to share your Twitter handle for a quick chat? -
Hey guys, I built a dead simple and minimal chrome extension which will give you your web page's PageSpeed Insights score in an instant. I hope this will be a real productivity booster for web dev friends.
You can get it on Chrome web store: goo.gl/vW6tRZ
Any kind of feedback is much appreciated ^_^2 -
Just wondering.. What kind of food would you serve if you'd be organizing a fairly large tech related conference.. Like a javascript conference or php conference? Most visitors would be white males doing coding..6

this weekend has been kind to me. rediscovering python i happily achived the creation of two very useful automation tools for the company. now i am curious if it even will be used given the fact that it runs in the shell without a fancy ui.2

A kind of twisted question but what are the features/keywords/syntax you don't want to be in your favorite programming language?6

There are places like Las Aves Archipelago or Ascension Island. They feel like some kind of best kept secret, like you’re not supposed to be there.
Do you know other places like this? Other than these two, I know Saint Helena, but not many more. Am I the only one who feels this way? -
Hey gang,
I'm kind of interested in learning some hacking/virus basics. I wanted to try out some scripts but I'm kind da nervous. Can I run simple viruses on a VM without worrying about my laptop getting infected too? I would think so, but I wanna be sure.
Also, if you have any resources you can point me to, that would be great. Thanks!2 -
Alright so I have been trudging around in javascript land for a bit and one thing kind of bothers me (correct me if I am wrong I would love to be wrong on this). It seems like a lot of javascript, or at least frameworks, leave a lot of possibility for memory leaks. Like you can create an anonymous object with a method that just kind of hangs out and acts with no way to retrieve it and turn it off. Am I wrong here? Please tell me I am wrong. And for the record I know I can assign anonymous objects to variables in various ways, but I am not forced to.4

@dfox i like the new stories feature. would be cool if there were another section that only showed posts with pictures. kind of like imgur is to reddit

//not a rant
In Semptember I will be attending information technology at university, and I was wondering what kind of laptop should I buy:
optimal screen size? (13.3 or 15.6)
ram? (for VMs)
processor?
dedicated graphics? (or should I just stick to integrated)
I will be mainly coding, running VMs and school stuff(maybe some casual game like League or Minrcraft), so I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the decision18 -
Brain fart.
In Java and many other languages there are basic types, like char and String. So why does Java have char and String, but not a digit type?
A number is basically a series of digits. For modular arithmetic it is very useful to be able to extract the 3 in the number 1234, it's just the 3rd digit in a number.
Base 2, base 10, base anything could be supported easily too. E.g. a base 2 digit would be:
digit d = 0b2; // or 1b2, but 2b2 would be a compilation error
A number would then be some kind of string of digits.
Any thoughts on this?9 -
Would you consider a technical leader to be as some kind of teacher ? I mean should he/she be teaching stuff teammates should already know ?1
-
I don't... for some incredible reasons all of my friends are interested in what I do. I don't have any kind of problem with them. I just explained them that I have this passion that could take a lot of my time but if they need I'll be there for them.

If one of you pod people would like to pick me up and bone me before cloning me I’d be open to that as long as you recognize it’s not for some kind of awful pay

what kind of amazes me is rather than force the world to be better someone has been actively forcing the world to be worse and more empty and evil.10

First month free on any service of any kind should be a pay of $0.00.
Not "oh here are all these fees and startup costs which just about equal one month of cost anyway to move our shit inventory etc etc"4 -

Would be a perfect joke if it read "Then it's true" (or maybe "Then it's 22")
Now it's more like the kind of joke your annoying boss would make to "act smart around tech guys"2 -
The relative physical and neurological aging here turned someone who used to be kind of intimidating into Herbert from family guy lol "get your fat space ass back here" lol they must all be getting exposed radiation time to move on lol1

Not programming related, kind of...
I don't want to seem like I'm sharing nosense but I guess this sort of thing would be popular with devs / gamers

Okay, so a bit of context. I got this AWS credit as some kind of reward for participating in some startup hackathon. Okay no big deal, Imma just redeem it on my personal AWS account and load up some EC2 instances for my bois to stage stuffs up there. No big deal
Until the fucking credit expire. Normally you guys would think AWS would be professional and send some kind of email about the about-to-be-expired credit but fuck no. They decide to be a cunt and start piling charges on my debit card instead.
Unlucky for them because I, being sensible, didn't put too much money in the debit account. The cunts at AWS tried to charge me but they failed.
Guess what motherfuckers, I've just changed my payment method and lock my cash just in case. Ban my account, I don't care, I don't really use it that much anyway, you won't get another penny from me.
Fucking capitalist pigs1 -
What kind of projects are mostly affected by the pandemic?
I believe there must be massive layoffs in travel related projects. Or I'm wrong and it's business as usual (IT part)?1 -
Unity is the worst! Every single version of it has some kind of bug that prevents some piece of what I'm working on to be buggy. 5.3.4 seems the most stable, as far as the app working, but likes to crash on me several times a day on Mac OS. I'm really tired of this.
-
want to dispatch an action from clicking a button, but dispatch() doesn't exist
add @connect to make dispatch() exist
other stuff crashes because @connect is actually a macro for a wrapper instead of the decorator it pretends to be
get locked in stalemate because both features kind of need to not crash -
Can you advise me what kind of web based wiki CMS should I use? I want to be able to document lots of stuff and fast. I dont need something very advanced.

today i learned that not all jsons must be enclosed in curly braces {}
a valid json can have it's outermost things be square brackets as an array []
this is a special kind of pain and despair8 -
I can't imagine what kind of fag would be amused to some soul defining level by the idea of frustrating a customer til they get yelled at

I will be investigating but I'll let the question here in case someone knows a way and is kind enough to share it...
WordPress site in Spanish, we need a multilingual plugin or something to let the visitor click a flag or something and see the site translated in English (by hand, no online translator service required).
This would be so easy to code, but they chose WordPress over malleability. c:
Any plugin or idea?2 -
Thinking about doing some kind of coding video blog. I would talk a bit and work on several of my projects (Of course not 1:1 time scale). Good for me as I could learn from (more experienced) viewer and they could participate some kind of in this series. I think I would record and then put voice on it when cutting the video. (I don't want the viewer watching me searching for an error caused by a typo for 20 minutes :D) Avg video length: ~5-15 minutes
What do you think? Will this be cool or no viewers?
PS: Sorry for my bad english.
PPS: I hate people who apologize for being bad writing in english.

I love how they go out of the way to allow the same photos of them to be taken. of course unless they're followed on successive runs there is no way of ensuring their capture is there which is what makes this system of theirs almost make sense if not for allowing more of their kind to be bred

I am going to my first hackathon in 2 weeks and am kind of nervous. I don't know anyone and don't have a team. I was wandering if it is a requirement to work on a project? There will be a lot of workshops and I am sure I will learn a lot even without working on a project.
If you could give me some hints on what I can expect that would be really helpful.
