Happened just now:
Client: Please remove this page from the site ASAP, and tell me when its done.
Me: Done
Client: what's wrong am getting an error code(404) when I click on the link.
Am not sure how to reply to that13 -
This happened few hours ago.
Client: I received an email which says that I won 1 million dollars. They gave me a link in the email, when I entered my credit card details nothing happened.
Me: Wait what? You entered your credit card details.
Client: Yes
Me: That was a scam, you didn’t win anything. They stole your credit details. Contact your bank ASAP and let them know about this.
Client: You guys are handling our email servers, why can’t you guys keep it safe. What type of security do you guys provide.
Me: Wait what? We host your website application not email.
Client: Damn it. My son said the same thing, but I didn’t listen to him. Anyways Cheers.11 -
At first I was like: "wtf just happened? Why is that hand connected like it was a robot?".

Me: *accidentally opens DevTools*
1.269427 milliseconds later...
Person: TEACHER! He’s HACKING INTO GOOGLE DRIVE!!!
Teacher: *glances at computer* Oh my gosh! That is ILLEGAL! Go to the office immediately.
I reluctantly headed to the office and calmly explained what happened. Luckily, some people have a bit of common sense and let me go.22 -
Windows, you fucking idiot! You scheduled that damn update and now you have the balls to ask me what happened?!7
-
// family tech support
Dad: *clicks something*
Dad: *something strange happens*
Dad: Hey son, come over here. What happened?
Son: Hm.. what did u click?
Dad: I don't know. Aren't you supposed to know that? You're our computer genius.7 -
I've always made this joke, but it happened for real.
There was a existing bug in our machine for a very long time. So long that the validation engineer now treats it as a feature and they raised a issue when the bug was fixed :/7 -
Guy: dot net dev (C#) on windows. (desktop + server)
Team(not his team, he just happened to sit next to us): php/frontend devs and Linux (server) people.
Team: starting a new project! We'll have to see what framework to use and what server :D
Guy: i know it's none of my business...... but I'd recommend dot net and windows server!
Me: respectfully, that hardly makes sense, you know our skillset/field... i understand that it works for you but it doesn't really for us :).
Next to that we'd rather not use windows for security reasons.
It's fine if that happens once.
When it happened for the 1748472823'th time, I had a real hard time controlling myself.10 -
*trying to find bug*
Me: Hmm, let's do grocery shopping.
*getting ready, locking everything up*
*standing outside for three seconds*
*realizes what the bug must be*
*opens everything again and fixes bug*
*locks everything up for the second time*
*Goes grocery shopping*
So that just happened.5 -
interviewer: Do you know HTML?
me: Yes sir!
interviewer: can you tell me its full form?
me: how to meet ladies.
interviewer: get the fuck out of here9 -
Hey everyone - I just wanted to update our Android users on the push notification crash that has been occurring.
The good news is the issue should be fixed in the update I just pushed out (should be available in the Google Play Store within a few hours). We apologize for the crashes and thank everyone for their patience.
I'm still looking in to what actually happened here. Our GCM library hasn't been updated in a while and all of a sudden a specific case started failing. I'll continue to look in to how that seemingly happened with no changes in the app. Some other users of the library started experiencing the same issue.26 -
This actually happened today
Colleague: Hey man I think there's a problem with my computer.
Me: Alright, I'll check it out.
(I go to his desk and find that his screen was turned off)
Colleague: It just suddenly turned off.
Me: (presses a random key on his keyboard)
(Screen lights up)5 -
Happened when I was young, and used uTorrent. Dad called some technicians to find out why Windows was running slow. They came and after fiddling about for 20 mins, declared that uTorrent was the problem.
And then deleted the desktop icon.

Corporate IT: Here at Company A we are very proactive about CyberSecurity!
Dev: What is our cybersecurity plan?
Corporate IT: If any breaches happen we will terminate those involved and discontinue use of the offending product
Dev: That sounds reactive to me
Corporate IT: 😡 It’s proactive actually as we put together that plan of action BEFORE anything happened!
Dev: …12 -

Not kidding. This actually happened with me.7 -
I was trying to get some cash from an ATM. Instead of vending bank notes as it should, this happened...
I still need that cash...11 -
Okay, it just happened to me.
Researching jobs, found one that requires ReactJS 7+ years of experience.
Initial release: May 29, 2013; 5 years ago6 -
Was drunk at a party a few weeks ago, accidentally commented on a rant instead of making a new one. Idek how that happened.5

**Colleagues Speaking about some political issues**
Me: Why what happened in that council?
Colleagues: Are you living under a rock or what?
Me: No, I have been living inside a shell. Why?
Colleagues: Stared for 5 seconds and continued with their topic.
I so badly want some programmers in my office ☹️4 -
For one small project my boss planned in about 60 hours.
Crazy that it only took me 5.5 hours. 😄
Such an extreme happened only once.4 -
https://google.com”f people near me wanted to show me something.
Person: Check out this zero-day exploit! I hacked into the system using a cloud-based cryptographically secure MD5 hash finite automata firewall HTML code API!
Me: Erm...what exactly did you hack?
Person: *shows screen while smirking*
It was a shell simulator website running “ping https://google.com”7 -
"We don't need that network profile for this interface anymore."

The weirdest shit happened today. My 14 year old sister comes to me and asks me that she has a million dollar app idea that I should make her so that she can put it on the app stores and earn.
THE PLAGUE HAS SPREADDD😱11 -
So apparently the Amazon S3 outage happened because of one setting being wrong in a looooong string of commands issued to shut down just a few servers.
Am I the only Linux user who totally gets how that could happen to just about anyone regardless of how awesomely competent they might be?4 -
1st post. Not sure if rant.
> Join 1st job after college.
> Desk assigned is close to a senior dev
> Random day, QA asks senior dev questions on something and coincidentally I happened to be working on the same thing.
> Senior dev borrows my system and explains qa something.
> By the end of explanation senior dev had bunch of shell commands written on notepasd on my machine.
> I don't understand jack shit of whats happening.
> QA looks at me and says, "Ping me once."
> I think, "no idea what just happened but must be something related to network ."
> I open terminal and type "ping" and quitely wait for further instructions (address to ping that is).
> Everyone starts laughing their asses off.
> QA guy opens slack, and sends himself the commands on text document.
> I realize what just happened
> Laugh awkwardly with everyone to ease the pressure

When you've spent 16 hours out of 24 programming and realise that you've not eaten, drunk, or even pooped. Well, that just happened5
-
A while back a co-worker of mine fucked up by leaving some debug code and pushing to production.
He quickly repaired it, redeployed and everything was good again before the customer experienced any issues.
Later that day, management showed up by his desk to ask what happened, how it happened and stating that he was not "angry enough" about his fuck up, long after it has been repaired.
Up to this day i regret not asking in what unit of measurement we could determine if we were angry enough; decibels? gray hairs? grams of shit in my underwear?4 -
This morning, a client called the office in anger because something wasn't working. The programmer who picked up the phone kindly tried to explain that he wasn't in charge and couldn't do anything at that moment. A few hours later, the client called back apologizing to that developer! We were all sitting there like 'wft just happened'5

Why is the ternary operator such a hated thing? I constantly hear people saying it's less readable, confusing, etc.
I think it's a beautiful, useful, and important operator and I use it constantly wherever readability won't be much affected.
How can you justify a repetitive if/else structure over a ternary, given that you're sure you're not going to put anything else in the ifs?
Whatever happened to DRY?
Whatever happened to KISS?
If those guidelines are what you code by, what's the excuse not to use it?
Because you can't read it as well? Familiarity breeds comprehension and legibility, my dudes.15 -
Last month I discovered my girlfriend created a GitHub account some time ago just because she saw the icon was like a cat in the Discord Connections settings and was curious about what it was.
That's the most adorable dev-related thing that has ever happened to me.10 -
Tragedies of Non-Technical Boss:
Boss: What happened yesterday, tried reaching you several times, you were just unavailable!
Me: My wifi stopped working as there was some issue at the ISP's end.
Boss: You could've atleast dropped a skype message that your internet is not working!
Me: Yes sir but the internet was not working, so I couldn't drop that message too!!
Boss: But you should have, I was in panic what happened to you...You were alright or not?...
Me: Yup I know, I didn't see the wifi tragedy coming.
Boss: If ever the internet goes down or anything sort of that happens just drop me a text on skype, that your internet is not working. Okay!
Me: *Confused* as to if he is high or just not listening to what I am saying...7 -
Lost half a work day because of an ISP outage. (Testing mailers doesn't work without a connection)
Turns out it was a loose cable on our modem that happened to coincide with the ISP outage elsewhere.
Ugh.1 -
First time showing my GitHub to some professionals, instant laughter and telling me that .gitignore exists... 3 years ago and I still feel embarrassed that happened.5
-
My teachers rant: "Who invented whiteboard markers? *trying to write some code on the board, but the marker went dry* What every happened to black boards and chalk. Chalk never gets dry.... I going to have to look that up" LOL, man I love him. He is so old that its funny and cute at the same time15

Wasn’t hired once because “we are startup and we don’t like your favorite meme that much”. Yes, this is what happened.
Their company was gone in two months.
They said my favorite meme wasn’t so nice
Their bodies are now food for the mice9 -
Excuse me, What the fuck?
This happened to me. some guy (or gal) rated my app 2 stars just because it couldn't download my app.
later on it replied me with a sorry message and said that app is really good. but it did'nt increased the stars 😑7 -
him: *explains feature*
Can you do that?
me: No.
him: Okay, you'll do that.
spoiler: I did it. This actually happened like 3 times with the same dude.5 -
What my professor teaches:
This is a mouse and this is a keyboard
What he asks in exams:
How do you use this particular keyboard and this mouse to create a potato?
That is pretty much what always happened.. Even in theoretical exams.. :|5 -
!Rant
*Whenever there's a big hacking thing that happened in cyberspace and the media gets the footage*
"Hey! You! you the website developer. Can you like get a hoodie and smash the keyboard."
"Why?"
"Big virus leak"
"But that's not ha.."
"SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GET THE HOODIE ALREADY"undefined and also probably am i overthinking this? the nsa is watch.. news shhh they don't need to know about that that's why there's always html code there what5 -
do you ever get that feeling when you suddenly wake up from sleep and immediately have the solution that has been bothering you for weeks or is it just me?
it happened to me today. woke up and magically had a solution to a problem I had with unity (it works now).6 -
"I want it looking and working exactly the same in IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9, Chrome, Safari and Mobile...."
Oh wait, that happened...9 -
Me: I prefer to make sure dev is fully separated from prod, that way if we fuck up, it doesn't matter.
Manager: It's fine, the service isn't fully deployed and dev/prod are named differently.
Me: runs ansible script to stop dev
*prod breaks*
Me: Huh. Wonder why that happened.2 -
I switched my router and this happened. It was 10Mbps up and down; now it's this. That can't be right...2
-
So this just happened... not to me, but at my friend's company.
The devs are being congratulated and spurred on for working late! I don't know about you, but this is not the kind of culture that should be encouraged.15 -
Something strange just happened, activated Fail2ban on another server and instantly blocked me when I already had ssh session open >_>
Does macOS terminal keep on sending ssh authentication requests? Or is my OpenVPN that keeps on sending requests.
Why does this keep on happening to me T_T17 -
So it happened that a roll of my office chair broke. Since the ordering process in our company is a nightmare and takes forever AND my employer is too cheap to buy enough adequate replacement, I had to draw and print a spare part myself...9
-
I was looking through old entries in my keepass, and I happened across this bit from when I worked in places that still had unix servers. I was so angry at the impossible input issues they had that I put this into my 'handy commands' section.2
-
Why the fuck do employers post remote position jobs, only to let you know in the first call that they require the employee to live in/near a certain city. That's not a remote position and it happened several times in my job hunt8
-
You know you are a geek when you try to shoo away a fly away from the monitor with your cursor. That just happened to me. It was scary...4
-
It happened just now.
Yes, I put "there is no need to be upset 10 hours" on governmental terminal.
#hackerman
How? Well, I discovered that it was web ui, so random menu category -> random external governmental website with Google map on it -> you know the rest.4 -
Microsoft admits they were hacked. Explains how it worked and what happened. No big deal. companies get hacked. That's life.
Indirectly admits that all of their customer support agents have access to your inbox.
Cool. Deleting my Outlook email. Thanks guys.9 -
Missing the first entry date for university was probably the best thing that happened to me.
Got to work full time and show off my expertise in "reallife scenarios" for nearly a year.
Best experience i could've made until now. -
Was forced to code like this:
if(condition)
{
//code
}
Instead of this
if(condition){
//code
}
Also I should mention that this happened 4 years ago and my mentor (27 years old economy major at the time) did not know how to use git, we stored projects on a shared networking folder.15 -
I swear, the next person that unplugs my computer while I am doing work IS GETTING HIT OVER THE HEAD WITH MY KEYBOARD.
To even think that you would argue and say it is my fault for not moving when this is the first time that this has happened is absolutely fucking absurd and abhorrent.4 -
@dfox sorry to ask but, what happened to you that made you so pissed off, you had to create an app just to rant? 😁7
-
Don't you think it's unfair that a group project where only 2 out of 6 people actually worked their butt off for a whole school year but everyone 'miraculously' passes? Yeah, this happened to me. They stuck to my group like parasites just to pass10
-
being told to lead a team of junior developers for a project when i was 18
i never had any formal CS education so i thought the management was joking, but a week after, i was called into a meeting with the junior developers and we were tasked with a project that needs to be completed within 4 months, with me as the lead
the project was successful and after that im occasionally given the task to lead a project every now and then
this happened a few years ago and its still the most confidence-boosting experience ever happened to me, the things i learned during those 4 months are still applicable to my career today15 -
Today the 'restrict account' feature I made hit production. Restricted an account and got an angry email with broken english.
Funniest shit that happened today. Made me proud.
To top it off we might get free loadtesting lol16 -
I had a coworker that was a real asshole. I noticed that often, during git merges, he removed part of the code I wrote.
So I had to spend a lot of time copying and pasting my code from git history in order to restore it.
I complained about that but he answered it happened by mistake. In reality that happened so often that he had to done it deliberately.
Btw, I did a little revenge. One day I discovered he didn't feel very comfortable using recursion. Thereafter, every time I needed a small loop I created a recursive function doing the same thing.
Fortunately, after some months I found a better job. I hope he is still debugging that code.4 -
This just happened. What the actual fuck!
I'll try my shot to experience. They are bad that doesn't mean I shouldn't experience.
It'll give me some different perspective and learnings.51 -
Just commented on a rant
*Goes back to scrolling*
*Remembers that I forgot to ++ it*
*Runs to my comments to upvote the rant*
Happened to anyone else?8 -
To incentivise myself to get fit, I decided to do push-ups/sit-ups whilst my code compiles
All that happened though is I now spend a lot more time making sure my code compiles quickly 😅5 -
Who the fuck writes a 200 line method with 52 if/else statements, 3 try-catches, 6 loops and only 1 comment saying //Array of system records. No dipshit I thought that was a Fucking interface. What happened to the whole keep it simple notion?!5
-
So this is what happened!
It was a rainy Friday, I was asked to add a quick bug fix to a js application, I spent my Friday coding, testing ..., baam the patch is ready ... I wrote a nice commit message explains the problem and the fix but I didn't push the code.
On Monday the fuckin code disappeared, no commit no code no nothing no trace ... To be honest I don't know what happened. I rewrote everything on that Money morning (you can only imagine how pest I was)
I use vim with tmux.
I have done everything I could to figure out what happened to that commit, I even doubted If had did wrote the fix that Friday, but it's not possible to forget few hours of a day
I checked my commit history on the different branches i did everything
No trace ...
Conclusion
My machine is hunted ...
Or I have multiple personalities and one of them is a programmer and he is fucking with me5 -
WHILE DOING SOME PROCESS, SOMETHING HAPPENED THAT INTERRUPTED MY PROCESS AND HAD ME EXPRESS AN EMOTION OF ANGER! DO YOU ALSO EXPERIENCE INTERRUPTIONS THAT CAUSE ANGER, FELLOW HUMANS?10
-
So this happened:
Client: “I just checked the page and the background video isn’t playing anymore. There’s just a play button in the middle”
Me: “It’s doing that because you are on low battery mode on your iPhone. Take it off”.
😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐1 -
It's sad that there's always a market, especially for what should be absolutely top priority to be kept private.
btw: sorry to OCDs, it is indeed not centered, my mail client zoomed in a little so that happened itself7 -
Merry Christmas Everyone. Despite of the things that happened this year. We'll still go to our code base and look how awful we code it haha. Happy Holidays everyone!3
-
Did I tell you that X third party system needed to be updated due to that pos using flash? Yes
Did you bitch about budget constraints and finding workarounds and stuff like that? Also Yes
Did I mention that X system was crucial for people and that we were not going to be able to do anything about it if we did not allocate the time to modify that before it happened? Also Yes
Did I mentioned this on multiple occasions? Yes
Was my team also pulled out from working on the alternative before this happened? Yes
Did I send multiple emails about this, talks, meetings and documentation of me saying all of the above? You betcha
Oh well 🤡6 -
That moment when you are testing the product with the PM and you remember all the bugs that happened and all you can think is that you don't trust this abomination
-
Have I ever told you guys of the time that I had made my PM feel bad by saying I had to drop 3 classes because he was working me so hard?
Yeah that happened and he felt really bad about it!
GOOD! FUCKING GOOD! I want you to feel bad about it! Don't you dare say that I'm not putting in enough work ever again!1 -
Boss: "wow how it happened it's already November? Well, here is this project that we supposed to end on October that I didn't mentioned yet, sorry I was sure last month was September. Don't make any plans for next few weekends, ok?"6
-
In the past, the company that i worked gave to all the employees usb to save whatever they want, after that, this happened.
Me: Hi, how can i help you today?
User: The USB that IT gave to us it's broken.
Me: Broken?
User: Yeah, i can't plug-in in my computer.
Me: Did you try turn around?
User: Of course i.. ah, f**k yeah.
And ends the call.2 -
I came back to work after a two week vacation to find out that some people left the company and others are leaving soon.
What the fuck happened while I was gone?3 -
Do you know whats worse than someone reach you for an idea " Lets create X existing app, but..." ?
Its "Lets clone that app, we will sell the service cheaper than the cloned app, you do all the job, se urity, hosting, administrating, and we will split the revenue 50/50."
Just happened.1 -
I've always thought the "can you hack my facebook accout?" rants a little exaggerated.
Then it happened to me twice.
For fuck's sake, is that damn social media site so ingrained in your puny little brain that you can't ask me something else? Is "what do you program" not the more obvious question?2 -
A long time ago in an office far away, my cube mate and one of my reports got into a fist fight. My cube mate got fired over that. Messed up everyone’s entire week.
A couple months later, 9/11 happened and we all had to evacuate the city. -
Writing a report in a word document for half an hour. Forgot to save in the middle.
You guys know what happened after that :(
2016 and we still have to deal with this freezing shit :(10 -
Guy sees me on my laptop and says "is that Linux?". I say yes then he says he is into computer "stuff and can hack anything". Not having a clue what that means I replied with a "awesome".
I don't have really any friends that are into "computers", so I decided to play ball.
I asked, "Are you into coding?.. he says, "Yes". Then I ask, " What languages?" He says, " Just what ever, anything really, it depends on what I am doing."
At this point I understand what is going on but it is so awkward. He continues.. "Recently I used.. what's it called abd or adb, you know I like rooted my phone"...
And let's talk about something else....
Why do people feel the need to lie or whatever you might call what happened. It might be different I think if he wasn't about 40.
I feel like this is a pretty common story2 -
Just today I got more than 100++. I'm very confused because it happened so quickly. 😵
I was not prepared for that. 😆
Thank you everyone, thank you devRant!8 -
I'm working on a project that integrates your Android phone with your PC. Stuff like file transfer, sending SMS and notification sync. I just had an idea for an awesome feature. Started researching and found that the Android API exposes exactly what I need. Full of motivation I started coding until I realized that the permission I need cannot be granted to third-party apps. Happened the second time. Fml
-
So this happened today.
Trying hard not to judge :/
Later the person also said and I quote:
"It is a markup language or what? We had PHP for that."9 -
I just finished upgrading a dotnet core 2.2 WebApi + Console App to dotnet core 3.1 and it was a very smooth process with very minor changes to my code.
Not a rant, just posting because it is the first nice thing that has happened for me in a while now.4 -
Happened just yesterday.
At 7:00pm some shared office colleagues rocked up at the building drunk, to inform me that they were having their own christmas party, since they couldnt be bothered attending ours the day before. -
Am I the only one that lives in fear of friends/colleagues finding out I'm on devrant?
I've already deleted a few rants in which I described something that happened between me and someone else in fear that they might find out.14 -
Gj Mastercard! My card just got blocked because every time I want pay and 3D secure code is needed, every first SMS that day is delayed by 5 minutes so session expires and I have to try again...now it happened quite a few times and card got blocked. Fucking shit...2
-

That feeling when you're finally able to reproduce a bug...
Now it's time to dig through the logs to see what actually happened.1 -
Solarized dark is the best thing that has ever happened the theme-world. I use it starting from terminal to all editors& IDEs.4
-
NOT saving the world in 2019. I already did that in 2012 when the Maya calendar ended and wasn't being thanked - on the contrary, people said "haha look, nothing happened".2
-
I really like Docker. I think that’s the best thing that happened in the dev field for years. Easy shipping and installation of software without messing up dependencies to other software.15
-
I never realized USB Type C was built to be reversible. I always assumed that I got it right every time in the first try.
What's happened to me3 -
Client: THIS IS CRITICAL, SOME DATA HAS BEEN DELETED, WHAT ZE FUUK HAPPENED, UNDO THIS FAST
Us: so after carefully reviewing the code, related resources and the network traffic we conclude that was never sent in the first place.
*closes issue*
I'm glad we got such a meaningful bug report on the same day a production system started failing, one big deployment that that was like a boss with 3 phases, an unnecessary long meeting and an app developer that that wanted me to break HTTP standards.1 -
So today I opened one Android app to check smog levels in my area and this happened (NaN %). Someone who made this app smokSmog probably didn't find out that NaN can happen. I am really interested if it is because sensor has no data or is it a problem inside the app4

Weekly reminder that RECRUITERS ARE MANIPULATIVE, LYING ASSHOLES BY DEFAULT.
Nothing new happened. I have seen the thread about rec scums in Reddit.5 -
New dev hired to assist me told the boss that he was going to refactor the code to improve stability.
He converted all my fragments into activities. Because he didn't understand working with the back stack. Now everyone is asking me what happened.3 -
Worst Monday ever.... going back to work today after a lovely week off. Just checked my emails before I get to the office and I’m already offended by the amount of ‘stupid’ that has happened whilst I’ve been away. Wish me luck, I may have murdered someone by the end of the day!2
-
JIRA.
Plenty of good things happened at work this year. Then we started using jira. That "heavy" bucketfull of shit though.7 -
Fucking hate recruiters/headhunters they are all talk, but when things get real... They fucking ghost you - who does that?
And how is that a way of working?
What happened to being a professional, at least cancel our fucking appointment.
Asshats🤬🤬🤯🤯
From now on I will call you, so just lose my info.1 -
Dedicated to Youtube developers who just happened to see us 500 error & some nice monkey joke. :)
I understand that all of you slaughered & only monkies left to fix site. 😁 -
Things that happened yesterday according to Kiki's internal clock:
- Michael Jackson died
- Wi-Fi 802.11n
- USB 3.0
- Microsoft bought Skype
- Android 5.0 and Material Design
- GTA V
- Skyrim7 -
so wait... the recruitment agency just gave me the wrong FUCKING ADDRESS.
THAT JUST FUCKING HAPPENED.
Get your head out your arse, and take a fucking proper look at the appointment details, instead of checking your goddamn phone constantly.
Fucking hell, I'm angry. -
This is the most wtf thing that happened me with Javascript, I had a regular expression and it caused bugs only with 4 digits long words, then I just noticed this:
/^.{3}$/.test(null) // false
/^.{4}$/.test(null) // true
What the fuck, I can't believe that who designed the .test method didn't think to avoid null coercion2 -
I was trying to make sometimng like cheatengine in console and that happened. Its really cool to see it when your friend is told you thats not the thing you should do5
-
Client calls me, 10am in the Sunday, complaing that there's something wrong with the system, the same thing he called me last week and I told him to observe and double check every time he closes a POS sale. So far, the error hasn't happened till today, Sunday again.4

Thx to a close friend :)
His mom is currently "bored" after she came to germany recently (getting too old to live alone)
Kartoschka, Oreschki, Pelmeni, Wareniki, Beljaschi, Bliny....
I got a ton of food and beer.
I'm in heaven. That's the best that has happened in the last months.1 -
What's up with all of these unstable updates at the same time from Google and Microsoft?
First Microsoft releases an update that deletes My Documents
Then chrome on windows gets updated with a "eat your disk in addition to ram usage" that freezes my PC.
Like whatever happened to testing before releasing, least some minimal testing...
Then again, it's a fucking Microsoft product... -.-5 -
Honestly, I am a bit confused what happened here. However, I am certain that someone just confirmed their subscription to our client's newsletter.
-
During one of my interviews a few years ago i was asked "when you leave and are suddenly reminded of that question you really wanted to ask, could you tell us what would it be?"
To which i replied, i don't know it hasn't happened yet.2 -

This happened a few years ago, and not only once.
Me to coworker: Could you send me that file?
5 minutes later in email: file://c/documents%20and%20settings.......1 -
Just found out today that may FINALLY be able to start charging for the development work our team does. 😎
Just have to wonder why this could have happened ages ago.
**Spoilers**
It was the sales team. That's why! -
Just drove home after working late at the office. Was kind of in the zone and didn't wanna stop.
On my way I see the police closing the road in front of me, because of a pretty bad accident that happened a couple minutes ago.

Helping Fix something on my Managing Directors Laptop...
After a restart I ask (word for word), "Can you please give me the password you use to login to your laptop"
She proceeds to give me her E-mail password
I respond by saying that I think that is her e-mail password and I need the laptop password.
Next thing I hear "You have to be more clear, to me they are the same thing"
Seriously... How much clearer could I have been, I'd be annoyed right now if my brain wasn't in an infinite loop going WTF JUST HAPPENED... WTF JUST HAPPENED... WTF JUST HAPPENED...7 -
Anytime I have to Google something. Which is all the time. I doubt myself all the time. Also, when coding our robot and it randomly shot backwards and ripped through a couple table and chair legs. That happened too.2

If 2020 were a software, everything happened because that one dev keeps pushing untested code into prod3

Not being able to persuade the client that storing plain text passwords so that they can send them to their users when they forget them is not the best way to handle user accounts.
This happened in 2012 but it still hunts me like it was yesterday.
Before you all demand to ban me from devRant, I’d like to say that we impelemented an alternative (unpaid!) for this, but were requested to disable it.3 -
So yeah, apparently i am supposed to take part of 'meating'.
I would love to say its joke/meme but no, not really, that happened.6 -
How to clear the lunch of developers: Shout as loud as you can from the office that ZEPTO is loose on the network drives and watch everyone scramble to their computer.
Actually happened at work today, somehow the boss let it in. To top it off, we had customers in the house that watched the whole thing happen.
It wasn't pretty.1 -
been thinking about quiting for a while, and then yesterday happened.
we where at a metting and in the middle of a heated discussion, my boss screamed:
''ANSWER ME!!''.
i didnt say much that meeting after than.
later that day i quit my job, that i in general had been very happy about :/4 -

Believe it or not, something like this *really* happened to me once: I was demoing a product to customers and my CEO stopped me when I was halfway through because he genuinely thought that what I was demoing did not exist. -

That feeling when you walk in a room, make a few steps on the floor and hear how all the walls are making cracking noises...
And some people choose to live in apartments/houses like that one.. Where walls can be punctured with a finger
what happened to firm, sturdy constructions...? What happened to strong walls and steady floors?
No way.. My house is gonna be built with rocks. Or at least a better part of it -
i wonder what happened to the bright eyed 18 year old version of me that had perfect grades and was on top of her shit. nowadays i can barely feed myself without feeling exhausted and I can't read a book to save my life2

Windows bug: system provides two standardgateways
Let me write that again:
Two STANDARDgateways
Neither me nor my teacher found out how this happened -
And so it happened.
My company installed app-operated locks in the office.
Today the internet went down during the night and nobody could get in to even get their laptops to work from home :))))
Brilliant move and there's certainly not been anybody who could have predicted that.3 -
This is the strangest thing that has happened to me:
I once worked as a intern at a consultancy company. Me and another junior got a brand new customer project assigned to us (bad idea I know) we spent 2 months working on that project, building a website from scratch. The customer paid 10 000€ for it. The website sucked and didn't work properly in the end.
I ended up leaving the company for unrelated reasons and left the project. A couple of months later I asked the other junior whatever happened to that project and he said that the customer seemed to have forgotten about the project and no one was working on it anymore
Like what? How do you just forget about something you paid 10 000€ for? I mean I'm happy they did as it was the worst project I've built4 -
I had a list that was built off a for loop.
One day the list was off by 1, and continued to be for a solid week...
Instead of solving the problem.. Added +1 to the incrementer variable.
Hasn't happened since (3 years)1 -
What happened? I visited this site probably less than 12 hours ago, now I have 99+ notifications! And on top of that, my hard drive is almost full!7

Has it ever happened to someone that when you start working on a project, the clients requirements are as good as a tricycle but one month into project and somehow the project has turned into a water fuelled tricycle powered by developers tears 😐

18 year ago today the earth stood still... and everything that was never was again ..it truly was the day that changed the world for the future.
I remember where I was when it happened... My aunt and uncle, worked In the pentagon on that day... they remember but they have never talked about that day
Every year its suppose to get easier to cope with that day, but I feel like each year gets harder and harder as the more I realize the things that changed or the other things that also happened around that time... or was popular prior and slowly died out afterward... each year that goes on just reminds me how long ago it was and it’s only getting longer, for the days of “old” ... days and culture of what I remember growing up to never return.17 -
Well, shit is kinda hitting the fan literally.
Two of my four clients are closing down, and it all happened in a month.
Not really fearing for job security, but now I've scheduled an interview with nVidia that I dismissed two years ago. Let's see how it goes.5 -
Everytime I am developing an API (from scratch, not when extending an old one) I try to return 418 HTTP error code in places that aren't yet developed or mainly when something that shouldn't have happened did actually happened. (example: failed non-essential assert, yes python)
So it's always lighter on lungs seeing people running around with wtf.png faces when their browser says "I AM A TEAPOT".2 -
You know what the worst type of screwups are? Those that have already happened but you don't know about yet.
There you are, coasting along, thinking everything's OK, blissfully unaware that you're fucked. And no matter what you do, you're still fucked. -

Holy shit, it happened to me today, I thought it was a myth that people actually use zip for source code.
So, got the task to help out the operations team naturally I for access to the repository. I got a zip file.

You know when you have a project and everything is fine. Then everything turns into this big mess that you have no idea what does. And then you don't even know how to continue on the project so you decide to just start from scratch after working on it for a year?
Well that happened today.4 -
Had a bad dream one night that my bosses were going to run me through the ringer on some stuff that I needed to do better.
A day later, exactly that happened.
It would’ve been nice if my premonition could have had a few days gap between dream and reality so I’d have had some time to fix things first. -
Have ever happened to you, that you feel like your current job is just not working for you anymore and it does not motivate you ?9

I started programming on a new POS machine and I noticed that sometimes it reboots randomly. The boss and the assistance said that it's a well known bug and happened also in all old machines. Ah.... Ok.

Build pipelines are awesome. What's not awesome is forgetting the 'pipeline' bit.
Sure, let's have each TeamCity job in the 'pipeline' build the deployable from different places! You must manually merge your code from dev to test to release.
What's that? The functionality working in dev isn't there in production? I wonder how that happened. -
Eavesdropping by phone's microphone and speech recognition to serve targetted ads by Google? Anyone here had a feeling this happened to them or knows is this already a thing?
Happened to me on my Android phone multiple times over last year on different subjects, that I was talking live with a person, for example how someone had eyelid surgery (my phone was locked in my pocket the whole time and I didn't google search what that is, or made any text input into device whatsoever) and couple minutes later an ad came on my phone for exactly something we were discussing before. Weird coincedence or something more? 🤔9 -
They say nightmares are bad, but have you ever solved a bug that was bothering you for a long time in your dream, only to wake up and realize it wasn't real? Worst feeling ever. And this happened three nights in a row. For three different bugs. You would think that after the first two nights I would know better, but yet again I was fooled.3
-
#wk6 coolest bug: it was first year CS and we were learning data structures. the assignment was a maze solver using stacks. I couldn't figure out the issue I had and went to sleep. my dream that night was in code (one of a few times it's happened) and I woke up mid-night and typed it in and it worked. slept like a baby after that.
-
You know what's hard...
Fixing a bug which occurred in production without having any logs because you log that useful info at debug level. 😧
Now take pen and paper, do calculation on your own and speculate what would have happened in production.3 -
"For front end developers that don't like Sketch". Say what!? Sketch is the best thing that's happened to front end designers in terms of design tools. Anyone who prefers Photoshop to Sketch is a sadomasochistic.1

"data randomly disappeared and caused us downtime. I fixed the problem by replacing the missing data"
"I don't see a problem. the data is there"
of course it's fucking there. I just put it back, but that doesn't change the fact that downtime happened.2 -
Today I got bug report on code that I thought was fairly well unit and manually tested by me while I was writing it.
What happened:
Our QA was testing other feature and asked someone to deploy into his env other branch, without these changes, and reported that this feature is just straight up not working at all.
That report was kindda big deal1 -
The first error on my first react native app happened on production. It was just once in a Android 4.4 from 2010... how do I even simulate that ? 😶4

Had one of those unicorn coding moments where my from-scratch code worked the first time I wrote and tested it. That hasn’t happened in a long time.

So LUA injector to Payday 2 requires on Linux certain library (libcurl3). So you know, sudo apt install libcurl3 and there you go!
You would think.
Apparently while you do that, the installation of libcurl3, it completely nukes your Steam installation... For some reason.
Can some please explain me, what the hell just happened? Please?1 -
This happened about a month ago with my realtor while she was reading a clause from the lawyer that she needed to put on the offer.
Realtor: hey you're in tech *points at her phone and then on the paper*, can you copy and put it here. -
Spent 2h debugging code until I realize that code is good, but written in a .coffee file... Instead of ._coffee. Yes,it changes the way code is executed. Wtf happened to this world.

Tried rm -rf /* on my Red Hat Vm.
Was expecting the machine to go blank suddenly, but sadly nothing like that happened.
After sometime I stopped the process, and found that no command is executing, not even 'clear' or 'poweroff',lol.
I think deleting system32 in windows is more fun as it shuts down the machine suddenly. XD1 -
Clicked on a funny devRant post
Chuckled immensely
Clicked back arrow
Still saw image and back arrow
Spammed back but nothing happened
Turns out the burn-in on my phone is so bad that it still shows that back arrow on the rant feed...
P.S. After typing that I saw that the edges of gboard was also burned into my display uggghhhhh3 -
When everything kind of just clicked.
I was struggling with learning how to program for quite some time when I first started, but one day I'm not sure what happened but everything clicked. It all started making sense and I felt like I could do anything with code. It was on that day that I knew I was going to be a dev for life. -
Wow, just fucking wow, you did it again Microsoft. You know the default mail app that comes with 8.1? It just randomly downloaded a pdf of a spam mail that it DELETED BY ITSELF before. Wow... "Hey, that looks fishy. Probably a trojan. LETS DOWNLOAD IT". I haven't even opened it. I was on my Desktop when it happened. Immediately deleted that crap.
That's actually the first time in the 3 years i have my pc that my antivirus was needed and it's not even my fault. -
There is a theory that states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what Brainfuck is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizzare and inexplicable.
There is another that states this has already happened.2 -

It is always great when I download a major release of a software I love and it only gets better.
1Password new version is exactly that. It took a great product and made it better integrated with the laptops I use every day.
Not really ranting... but I wish this happened more often. -
I don't want to spend a whole day tracking a crash back through multiple systems just to find a buffer that was initialised with garbage, wasn't written into completely, and as a result just *happened* to contain an exact value that causes a crash later on. If you're doing weird low-level things in C/C++, ZERO-INITIALISE YOUR DAMN BUFFERS.

I once was righting a C project for my professor, and I had a problem that I didn't know the solution, once I copied the script in the main into a function it worked perfectly.
And still have no idea of what happened.1 -
Never really knew what i wanted to do in life so i decided to apply to a CS program because i liked gamed. Ovet time it just happened and now I'm apparently doing it for money. Life can be funny like that.
-
Not a rant, just something that made me laugh way too much. We wanted to test this error logger we made to see if it could report where the error happened, so we wrote a function that just throws an exception. Not sure what to call it, we called it “shitTheBed”.
So it looked like:
service.shitTheBed()
I almost want to leave it there.2 -
Last night i sat down at 6pm to free up some disk space on /boot, because i didnt properly size it months ago on first installation.
5:20am i close my laptop with a fresh install, and no more WinBlows.
Didnt set out to do it, but Im not mad that it happened. -
Ever happened to you that you sat for a project of yours and get into it so much that by the time you get exhausted it's already night.4

What's your favorite bug you've ever created? Here's one that took a few hours from my life:
if (errCode);
printf("Something bad happened!");
It keeps failing, and yet it all seems like it's working!!!!1 -
This Ever happened with you ?
You collaborated with someone for the startup/project you are working one. And that person, started developing clone of your project/platform/application and launched under his own name -
Kinda sad that the whole "seamless iframe" thing never happened. Sandboxed ads and external embeds, what a dream.
-
The people who run these scheduling meetings need to remember that this building is just one big tinder box ready to go up in smoke. 30+ minutes talking about bull shit that only affects a small percentage of the team. AND we're behind and dealing with a push that happened on a Friday before the guy who wrote the code left for vacation to go to Tennessee to watch the eclipse for some reason.
-
I just got directly offered to work as a front end tech lead in a company that is partner with Atlassian, but I'm kinda confused because I don't meet the requirements for the job (such as 8 years of experience as a dev). Has this ever happened to you?4

lol......a random deployment made me discover an expired certificate in a lower env.....the same will expir in prod in a few days.....I would be fucking screwed if that happened.....best part it only a redeploy/restart would have triggered the whole damn thing
-
How to sow the seeds of panic in a dev organization. Pop up a message that your BitBucket license has expired and you can't push code changes until it is renewed. Happened today. Amazing how fast the corporate cogs can turn when productivity is on hold and you still have to pay the devs.
-

A meeting with an external event organizer, who just so happened be a rather attractive woman. I've never had so many superfluous colleagues (all guys) show up and show off.

Yesterday I spent 7 hours on a silly SSL certificate error. The exact same webpage gave me "certificate revoked" error when viewed in one browser/device but it displayed fine on others!
But everything is back to normal today! As if nothing happened!
I'm not a web dev, so I have no idea why this happened. I'm just pissed that I wasted 7 hours on a thing that wasn't my fault... -
Argggggh... not that fucking image again. Oops, this was supposed to be a reply to this https://www.devrant.io/rants/300574 not a new rant. Don't know how that happened.

Thank you hoogle for synching all of those images for that html book with you "fotos" app without notifications like every other picture you can find up there. I just discovered this and it apparently happened 3 years ago.4

I think that happened with my first Hello world. I was so wowed that I clapped my hands loudly, and the other people that were in the room (some family acquittances) looked at me with that WTF look and wondered if I had really be gone mad. It was wrote in C, BTW.

Knowing that being asked to help the PM with his Client Project Status Report on a Friday evening means a) it's late, b) he has no idea what has happened since the last one and c) you'll be writing it all anyway.

I think whether this is even a project that should be done NOW
or if there's some critical dependency that some monkey just happened to have forgotten to tell me... -

Has this situation ever happened to you ? What should I do ?6 -
I think it was Mike Rugnetta (from pbs idea channel on YouTube) who once tweeted "worse weekends have happened to better people" or something to that effect.

I have to integrate Branch.io journeys to a React PWA. Just started reading the docs and got a basic idea.
Just confused about how shall I add the web SDK in the React way.

how do you deal with the situations where you have no clue what happened in production ??
we have a Spark job and suddenly the job execution stopped in the middle without any error log. after sometime it started working again and all the master and workers were fine at that time.
now client wants RCA for that. 😟3 -
don't you just love it when you have to fix a system that consists on unnecessary junk code, horrible/lack of indentation, no documentation and the clients says "I don't know what happened fix it and I'll post you good"
I mean, I live for this shit man! -
I just spent the last half-hour fishing a bug that happened to be caused by excessive react code lately. 😭😭😭

Tried to install MS-DOS 6.22. Was not fun at all. Tried 3 iso flashers in total. The closest that happened to DOS was unetbootin getting bootlooped on the 10 second countdown to automatic system start. I gave up on it eventually.

Once this happened to me where I copied some static text from notepad to VIM editor and my test cases was failing because of junk characters inserted. It ruined whole dam day and later found out the root cause.
Something I learned that Windows != Linux1 -
Someone mentioned antivirus and custom code... it reminded me of when Symantec Endpoint Protection received an update and some of our production servers had our custom apps quarantined. We had about four servers that had most of our custom apps removed. When it happened I thought someone was monkeying with the servers (they were our task servers used for task and service jobs). It took me about an hour to realize what happened then another hour to get the SEP admins to disable it until we could get another patch. Fun day.

Happened to me on my current project, a client said "I know that we'll have some budgetary restrictions, so I prefer to ask you a lot of features now, 'cause I don't know much time the dev team will stay...".

Note: Do not work on projects off of cloud on multiple computers. You will most likely start losing code. As I did.
Was confident in my cloud setup until this happened, so began using git for projects that I actually care about. -
That second when you scan the stack trace, spot the line in error and just think to yourself "wtf just happened"

Today was the first time, that Git saved my ass.
I'm building an MS Access DB with fronted and apparently I fucked up while working on some FS stuff and corrupted the fronted-db.
Luckily, I sync my changes regularly to a git-repo so I just took my last backup and applied all changes that happened in between. -
I wonder if we will have a sprint review meeting for 2016. You know to prevent the shit storm that happened to continue ...

I've spent a day trying to find out what the fuck happened with some code on a server because it seemingly disappeared. Today the client told me the have _more_ servers that they never told me about and most likely it's on one of them. Except they don't have credentials to them. Jesus.

Every time I am surer that we live in a virtual reality, it has been the change of time, and when compiling the software an error has happened and the bad weather has returned.

Python working non-deterministic on VSCode? That just happened ... somehow, wtf??
Getting a list from a method and comparing its last element with an int value. Always worked before like a charm, didn't change a thing. All of a sudden TypeError, cannot run anymore? Restart VSCode, run again, still not running ... ?? Retry and print the element, in case I've surprisingly actually been an idiot all along ... nope, value looks in print as expected. Continue execution, suddenly condition works again. WTF just happened??? Caching, python extension bug, anything like that to blame?1 -
There is something wrong with my Internet...
Why is creating an Remix app takes like forever?
And this happened to other JS frameworks (that I tried) too!1 -
So It's a really interesting thing that happened with me
I just became a Facebook developer a few days back and today I see that there's news that Facebook might get banned in India, and I'm like thinking there goes all my learning of chatbots.
I should probably put that on my resume😂 like "Recommend me to your rival company and watch their downfall"
