Sarah = best friend (random name)
Sister: Hey, could you help, sarah's phone isn't recognized by her computer anymore.
Me: What phone/pc does she have?
Sister: iPhone/Windows.
Me: Has she checked the drivers?
Sister: *tells to check drivers, feedback:* yes, seems to be fine.
Me: *comes up with 1000 other suggestions*
Sister: *doesn't work every time*
Me: Is there any other information that might be useful in this case?
Sister: Well, she dropped her phone in the water earlier, the phone is hardly responding.
Me: THE WAT? AND YOU DIDN'T THINK THIS WOULD BE WORTH MENTIONING IN THE BEGINNING?!? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.16 -

Happened just now:
Client: Please remove this page from the site ASAP, and tell me when its done.
Me: Done
Client: what's wrong am getting an error code(404) when I click on the link.
Am not sure how to reply to that13 -
Yesterday, in a meeting with project stakeholders and a dev was demoing his software when an un-handled exception occurred, causing the app to crash.
Dev: “Oh..that’s weird. Doesn’t do that on my machine. Better look at the log”
- Dev looks at the log and sees the exception was a divide by zero error.
Dev: “Ohhh…yea…the average price calculation, it’s a bug in the database.”
<I burst out laughing>
Me: “That’s funny.”
<Dev manager was not laughing>
DevMgr: “What’s funny about bugs in the database?”
Me: “Divide by zero exceptions are not an indication of a data error, it’s a bug in the code.”
Dev: “Uhh…how so? The price factor is zero, which comes from a table, so that’s a bug in the database”
Me: “Jim, will you have sales with a price factor of zero?”
StakeholderJim: “Yea, for add-on items that we’re not putting on sale. Hats, gloves, things like that.”
Dev: “Steve, did anyone tell you the factor could be zero?”
DBA-Steve: “Uh...no…just that the value couldn’t be null. You guys can put whatever you want.”
DevMgr: “So, how will you fix this bug?”
DBA-Steve: “Bug? …oh…um…I guess I could default the value to 1.”
Dev: “What if the user types in a zero? Can you switch it to a 1?”
Me: “Or you check the factor value before you try to divide. That will fix the exception and Steve won’t have to do anything.”
<awkward couple of seconds of silence>
DevMgr: “Lets wrap this up. Steve, go ahead and make the necessary database changes to make sure the factor is never zero.”
StakeholderJim: “That doesn’t sound right. Add-on items should never have a factor. A value of 1 could screw up the average.”
Dev: “Don’t worry, we’ll know the difference.”
<everyone seems happy and leaves the meeting>
I completely lost any sort of brain power to say anything after Dev said that. All the little voices kept saying were ‘WTF? WTF just happened? No really…W T F just happened!?’ over and over. I still have no idea on how to articulate to anyone with any sort of sense about what happened. Thanks DevRant for letting me rant.15 -
At first I was like: "wtf just happened? Why is that hand connected like it was a robot?".

I just remembered the first time I set up a Linux-Server. It was a simple Apache webserver at my first internship anf I didnt have a clue about literally anything.
My mentor guided me through and gave me literal step-by-step instructions (alright, now type... and now type...).
At the end he told me "OK, now run 'sudo rm -rf /*' to finish setting up". Me, being the naive and clueless motherfucker I am, happily nuked the everloving shit out of my newly setup server. I was like "Alright, WTF just happened??" He then told me "Now that you know how it works, do the entire thing again all by yourself. And you just learned an important lesson: NEVER exexute commands you dont know what theyre doing". I really did learn a lot on that day and still follow that lesson :D8 -
When someone's calls and completely loses his shit (swearing etc etc) because we HAVE TO FUCKING HELP HIM BECAUSE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE RELY ON THIS SITE WHICH IS DOWN.
Explained him calmly that its an unmanaged server which we literally don't have access to. Keeps on calling me all kinda things and then says he'll email some login details.
Bossman walks in, collegue goes like 'yo guess what just happened with linuxxx!'
Le me explains the story.
Bossman: email me his number. I'm going to call him. You treat my employees with fucking respect.15 -
Sister was getting a new phone (she likes iphones but the jackplug removal made her go towards android as well as the prices) and there was this Deezer family deal. So she Signal'd me asking if I'd like to join the deezer family and I was like 'yeah sure but just remember that there's a big chance of me moving to another country after my study, is that okay with this subscription?'
Sales guy: It's limited to the country the official subscriber is in.
Sister: 'Oh but my brother is a smart IT guy, he can probably setup a VPN server here so that he can still use the app.'
She told that the face of the sales guys was like 'what the actual fuck just happened'.
She called me afterwards telling the story and also 'even though I thought I'd never learn about this stuff (I always told stuff at the dinner table), appearantly you taught me more than I realized!;.
Yeah, that was a very proud brother moment =).6 -
Guy: dot net dev (C#) on windows. (desktop + server)
Team(not his team, he just happened to sit next to us): php/frontend devs and Linux (server) people.
Team: starting a new project! We'll have to see what framework to use and what server :D
Guy: i know it's none of my business...... but I'd recommend dot net and windows server!
Me: respectfully, that hardly makes sense, you know our skillset/field... i understand that it works for you but it doesn't really for us :).
Next to that we'd rather not use windows for security reasons.
It's fine if that happens once.
When it happened for the 1748472823'th time, I had a real hard time controlling myself.10 -
*trying to find bug*
Me: Hmm, let's do grocery shopping.
*getting ready, locking everything up*
*standing outside for three seconds*
*realizes what the bug must be*
*opens everything again and fixes bug*
*locks everything up for the second time*
*Goes grocery shopping*
So that just happened.5 -
Hey everyone - I just wanted to update our Android users on the push notification crash that has been occurring.
The good news is the issue should be fixed in the update I just pushed out (should be available in the Google Play Store within a few hours). We apologize for the crashes and thank everyone for their patience.
I'm still looking in to what actually happened here. Our GCM library hasn't been updated in a while and all of a sudden a specific case started failing. I'll continue to look in to how that seemingly happened with no changes in the app. Some other users of the library started experiencing the same issue.26 -
This actually happened today
Colleague: Hey man I think there's a problem with my computer.
Me: Alright, I'll check it out.
(I go to his desk and find that his screen was turned off)
Colleague: It just suddenly turned off.
Me: (presses a random key on his keyboard)
(Screen lights up)5 -
Boss: Give me unrestricted access in the system.
Me: It's dangerous. You might break something.
Boss: I'll be careful.
Me: *gives access*
This happened 2 years ago. Now every week he deletes something he shouldn't and break a module for him or for the clients using our system.
Just woke up in a rant email saying that "oUr OnLiNe StOrE DoEs NoT wOrK". Well, that's because you have delete the Cart configuration for all the clients you dumbass. What the fuck were you thinking when you deleted that?16 -
The inevitable happened, the user that I've answered tons of questions about freelancing deleted his account, thankfully I took backups and will recreate it [together with a killed joke] in the comments below (should've just webarchived it, meh)
I'll keep adding questions & answers I come across to make this a useful resource for people that want to get into freelancing, want to ask me something in the comments, you name it.
Might compile it into a better searchable resource eventually (some sort of blog with TOC), but right now neither do I have the time nor will to do that.
Wish I could have taken over the link that has been now posted a lot, but every post has an ID and I doubt it's possible, will tag dfox to clarify though and also floydian and devtea, that have been so nice to always post a link to that one rant.52 -
This happened at my last internship. There was this other intern and he was a TO THE FUCKING MAX windows fanboy and whenever someone said something bad about windows he'd go full rage. Also, he'd sometimes spend half an hour at my desk explaining why windows was the best and Linux sucked.
This one time, I read about a newly discovered windows vulnerability and told the employees so they'd update quickly and they were like ' thanks for the notification mate!' And then that guy came up to me telling that 'Linux also has severe vulnerabilities sometimes'. YES I FUCKING KNOW THAT I'M JUST TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO UPDATE FOR THEIR SECURITY YOU FUCKING ASSHAT. I got really mad. Still, fuck that guy.9 -
Okay, it just happened to me.
Researching jobs, found one that requires ReactJS 7+ years of experience.

https://google.com”f people near me wanted to show me something.
Person: Check out this zero-day exploit! I hacked into the system using a cloud-based cryptographically secure MD5 hash finite automata firewall HTML code API!
Me: Erm...what exactly did you hack?
Person: *shows screen while smirking*
It was a shell simulator website running “ping https://google.com”7 -

Nearly had a crash today driving home and almost had a heart attack. Apparently my car had the heart attack for me and started doing. A speaker test.
So I'm contemplating what just happened and my car's speakers start going BEEEEP BEEEP BOOOOOOOOOOOOP (Subwoofer).
Then the radio came on and switched to a Spanish station.
I looked it up, apparently I had entered diagnostic mode on the infotainment system when I was fiddling with the wheel buttons as a stress relief.
Long story short, the diagnostic mode informed me that my car runs Windows ME!
I would like a new car please, kthxbye.6 -
So apparently the Amazon S3 outage happened because of one setting being wrong in a looooong string of commands issued to shut down just a few servers.
Am I the only Linux user who totally gets how that could happen to just about anyone regardless of how awesomely competent they might be?4 -
You is not gonna beliebers what just happened lol
So a couple weeks ago I earned a stress ball (300+ ++'s) I sent an email about it but never got a reply, so I decided to just forget about it. But then I just ranted (lastnight) about how its so hard to get a stressball. So I basically just said "fuck it i'll buy one". Then some dude comes along and is like "omg not until he shows us the bought one" so I'm like CHALLENGE ACCEPTED and buy one...
Then I get an email confirmation from devrant store confirming my order for the bought stressball. And I notive that my spam folder has unread messages in it. i look inside the spam folder and what do I see?...
I see dfox replying to my free stressball request weeks ago lol. So yay, now I gets the 3 balls (or two - depending) lol omg, so many balls.15 -
Yesterday I fucked up big time.
First time in my career (I’m 23).
I just started working this week at a new company startup that had no programmers before me. They have a bunch of websites under their control that were on all different hosting solutions, and we decided to move them all to AWS.
I moved a few and was managing the folder rights on the server.
What happened next made my heart skip a few beats.
Bear in mind I’m not an expert in Linux.
I wanted to chmod to the folder I was currently in, and typed ‘sudo chmod -R 770 /‘ thinking for a while that the ‘/‘ would do it on my current dir.
Fuck. As I saw what was happening I pressed ctrl + c as fast as I could. But the damage had been done.
Fast forward a couple hours I deleted the broken instance, and created a new one from scratch. Had to do everything again but managed to do it in just a couple hours, moving as fast as I could without making such stupid mistakes again.
I was honest about it from the first minute it happened, and told my boss right away that I fucked up and had to start over, with a couple of hours of downtime.
Luckily not much was lost and I took a snapshot right after I was finished and will look into auto backups next week.8 -
Guys, my unfortunately daily rant of my pm
I was told to create a docker env for our team. Good. Document the process so everyone can know what to do. Good.
My PM follows what he wants to instead of step by step and changes whatever he wants to.
I am asked for help because he doesnt know. No prob.
Me: "Do this, do this and.."
PM: "that doesnt matter, trust me, I could change it and.."
Me: "...and it wont work"
PM: "I know suff too, check" *does his changes aaaaaand doesnt work*
* awkward staring*
That happened a while ago.
This week, he crashed his git repo because he was doing things in docker team (including him) decided not to.
Took me more enough time explaining him "you are not supposed to do that in the container" funny fact he wanted to prove that his way was right and even if he did my way it would crash.
Sooooo he did my way just to prove how wrong I was. Everything worked flawlessly. Rage-still-awkward staring.
Plus the "aww that's weird. I dont know how this happened" -
1st post. Not sure if rant.
> Join 1st job after college.

> Random day, QA asks senior dev questions on something and coincidentally I happened to be working on the same thing.
> Senior dev borrows my system and explains qa something.
> By the end of explanation senior dev had bunch of shell commands written on notepasd on my machine.
> I don't understand jack shit of whats happening.
> QA looks at me and says, "Ping me once."
> I think, "no idea what just happened but must be something related to network ."
> I open terminal and type "ping" and quitely wait for further instructions (address to ping that is).
> Everyone starts laughing their asses off.
> QA guy opens slack, and sends himself the commands on text document.
> I realize what just happened
> Laugh awkwardly with everyone to ease the pressure

!dev, more about social media
(and suicide)
ugh. social media.
recently a girl from a nearby high school committed suicide. it's sad, and i know what i'm about to say is going to be controversial, but i think it shouldn't be on social media. maybe her close friends posting it on instagram, to remember her, but that's it.
of course, that's not what happened. people started posting "❤️" on their snapchat stories, and theyre saying they are raising awareness. (they don't know this girl or why she did it or anything, they're just doing it because their friends did it.)
this awareness, is well, temporary.
the point of snapchat is that all the pictures go away, so why would they talk about suicide prevention on there? do they want suicide prevention to go away? this is most prevelent on snapchat, but on others, too.
trend after trend after trend.
thats what people turned her death into. a trend.
just like #prayforparis, and others, but on a local scale.
the problem with social media is that things go away. in a day or two it'll be like this never happened. she won't be remembered like she would if she weren't on social media.
i know what you're thinking. they're just "raising awareness." but for how long?
well, until another trend comes.
people disagreeing with me are extremely welcome to comment.
and any ideas on how this problem can be fixed?20 -
So back in January 2015 I bought my first Mac and wanted to learn Swift. Coming from .Net C# IBOutlet was anew concept for me, had to search for how to make a button event and Google gave that 😐
**I just googled it for the sake of this rant but ya it happened 😅5 -
TLDR; I just screwed a production server and rendered it useless!!!
Long story:
I went to install a product that we built at the customer's site, and was given a Linux running server, to deploy our app.
I work in windows, and barely know the basic Linux commands.
So I look at the files in the home directory, and see that the are a lot of files, so I ask the customer if it is ok that I move all the files to a separate directory.
He agrees, and me thinking that I am smart, proceed to enter the following commands in the terminal:
mkdir old
mv /* old
Of course I got an error that I don't have permission so my next command was:
sudo mv /* old
And that was the end of that computer.
The amazing part of the story is that as soon as it happened, I understood so much about Linux.
The file structure, sudo, the power of the terminal, aliases and so much more...15 -
OMFG it happened again. I'm always very explicit with recruiters that I don't take full time employment while I'm studying. This one was very understanding about it and said he found a great match for my skillset.
I just had a meeting with the CEO of this great match of a company.
- "No, we only seek people who can work full time, let's keep in touch when you've graduated".
What the fuck, way to waste everyones time.10 -
THERE HAS BEEN A SLIGHTLY BIG SPIDER IN MY ROOM SINCE YESTERDAY AND YESTERDAY IT DISAPPEARED THE LITERAL SECOND I FUCKING SAW IT IT DISAPPEARED. I SHIT YOU NOT IT JUST VANISHED. Very funny/random/weird partly non-dev related story that happened today.
We're selling our coffee machine at work since the coffee is gross.
Someone wants to buy it and wants it to be sent.
Coworker: just the general way through a package?
Other coworker: hmm yeah through post is fine
Me: POSTAL PIDGIN
other colleague: BY PENGUIN
Another colleague: BY LIKE 100 PENGUINS FLYING THAT THING THROUGH THE AIR WITH LIKE WIRES ATTACHED TO IT
Me: just hold on for a second and imagine this graphically...
Colleagues: damn that would be fucking genius xD
Yeah we're quite random 😆30 -
My laptop had a full meltdown and wouldn't turn on. It tried to start up then the screen went blank. It's happened before so I lost hope pretty quick.
Just spent the whole evening trying to fix it reinstalling windows and now I spot the problem. The HDMI is plugged in to a monitor that was off. My laptop was fine the whole time. Fml3 -
This morning, a client called the office in anger because something wasn't working. The programmer who picked up the phone kindly tried to explain that he wasn't in charge and couldn't do anything at that moment. A few hours later, the client called back apologizing to that developer! We were all sitting there like 'wft just happened'5

The following just happened in the bus:
A woman took a beautiful Enpora flip phone from 2008 out of her pocket. While she did that a small yellow paper fell on the ground. My eyes pointed at the paper and I saw multiple usernames, passwords and codes on it.
I didn't even hesitate and tapped on her shoulder and gave it back.
She was frightened! Couldn't thank me enough and told me how important it was to have that with her. She said she couldn't remember all her passwords and that if she would've lost it, she didn't know how to log in and unlock her phone anymore.
I gladly told her that it wasn't very safe but ofcourse I understoot that it can be hard to remember everything.
Also I almost told her that she could start using a password manager but with a flipphone you can't use that of course ;)5 -
I played a lot of Command & Conquer when I was younger, and I remember going through the files for C&C: Red Alert. I found one that had all the units names and properties, and wondered what happened if I changed a value. So I changed grenadiers attack speed to something ridiculously fast, and found that it actually changed it in the game!
The light bulb went off in my head, and I then created new units:
- Albert Einstein that shot electricity
- Attack dogs that launched missiles
Granted the animations didn't exist for these so it defaulted to playing their death animations when attacking, which was amusing.
That was the ah-ha moment for me that lead me to pursue programming. It was just so much fun!4 -
Last month I discovered my girlfriend created a GitHub account some time ago just because she saw the icon was like a cat in the Discord Connections settings and was curious about what it was.
That's the most adorable dev-related thing that has ever happened to me.10 -
Tragedies of Non-Technical Boss:
Boss: What happened yesterday, tried reaching you several times, you were just unavailable!
Me: My wifi stopped working as there was some issue at the ISP's end.
Boss: You could've atleast dropped a skype message that your internet is not working!
Me: Yes sir but the internet was not working, so I couldn't drop that message too!!
Boss: But you should have, I was in panic what happened to you...You were alright or not?...
Me: Yup I know, I didn't see the wifi tragedy coming.
Boss: If ever the internet goes down or anything sort of that happens just drop me a text on skype, that your internet is not working. Okay!
Me: *Confused* as to if he is high or just not listening to what I am saying...7 -
Well, it happened!
After decades of waiting, it finally happened...
Very early on in my career, I was told that one day, one of your client will ask you to make the logo bigger.
Well, today was that day.
My client didn’t really understand just how much of a negative impact it would have on his site’s navigation by making his always obnoxiously larger ugly icon an additional 10% bigger.
He also failed to understand aspect ratio and forced me to stretch his low/res raster image without scaling it in all 2 dimensions.
He actually used the line from the infamous song “...I don’t want to tel you how to do your job by can you make the logo bigger?”
https://youtube.com/watch/...3 -
Oh damn....I just realized that I am working with a scammers' company. They wanted us (new employee) to create an app behave like keylogger for Android(not in Google play , because Google with ban this one).
Today I asked the manager about our salary. He said that our salary are based on commission. So look what happened, one of my colleague disappeared since yesterday (as in not coming to work without warning)14 -
The other day, I had a talk with my dad and he asked me about why YouTube is recommending him videos that he saw in the past or that type of ads. He is a non-techie btw.
I told him about personalized ads and so on.
Told him the "advantages" and the disadvantages of it. I even explained the advantages like if they would be so good that they are on the same level as holy things that happened to humanity. That was just to test him though.
And guess what?
He was completely against it. He said that it just brings disadvantages and no advantages at all. He was pissed that YouTube was recording his search history and so on to make a profile of him. He cares for his privacy. And I'm proud to have such a dad. :)5 -
So I am running this crypto project that has dynamically generated private keys for a wallet stored in a Redis database. Nowhere else. The keys are generated on the fly.
At the moment of the happening the wallet had over 3.000 USD on it. I am testing new code locally, supposedly on a local Redis DB. Of a sudden, my code wipes the crypto keys and it turns out that I was connected to the live instance. 😱 Better don't ask me how.
Shock of my life. You know, when you turn pale and dark in your eyes, blood stops in your veins and you just want to die? Worst-case scenario that could have happened. All that money lost in crypto space.
Turns out, my good Redis hosting company kept backups for the past 7 days. Keys restored. Happiest moment of my life.4 -
My dear diary,
Today, the guy that convinced the boss to completely replace our functional CMS website (marketing used to update it) with a static one he was writing from scratch in PHP + jQuery, has published our MailChimp Api Key on StackOverflow, because he couldn't make the API to work.
Boss didn't complain, but I don't think he understood what happened. Just asked the guy for not doing that again.
It was a crazy day.12 -
Based on a true story that happened right now.
Dad: "how do i download youtube videos?"
Me: "just google youtube downloader and download them from some site, thats how i do it"
Dad: "WHAT!!??? You want me to fucking google it? I dont know how to fucking google for those things, you're the IT guy and you should know how to do this, if I wanted to google it i wouldnt ask you for help. You know what, get the fuck out of my face i dont need ur help, get out"28 -
About a year ago, while giving interview for a pharmaceutical company. (role of software developer)
Interviewer : So why do you want to join X?
Me (in mind) : (Ok, be calm, I have practiced this and i know what to answer, just follo tbe script)
Me : (Following the script) I would like to join X because I think X could give me exposure to meet people with various skills. (Cant remember what was next) And i also think working in X would make my father proud as he always wanted me to become a Doctor.
After that I just sat there for a few seconds staring at desk contemplating my life failures and I suddenly remember Im in a INTERVIEW.
Me : And thats it. (smiling as if nothing happened)
Worst Interview ever.2 -
When I am sitting in my school and writing a few lines of simple HTML code, people looks at my screen and more less shouting out loud "wow you are like a hacker or something? Who are you hacking and how do you do it and how did you learn it?". It happened a couple of times to me. Sometimes I just tell them it as it is and saying something like "it's simple HTML code" and a little explanation of what it is. Sometimes (depending who it is) I answer that it is a new kind of spyware I'm developing and if I'm lucky they believe in me and starts begging me for not hurting their computers.
Just a few lines of <script> and some code highlighting. How to become a hacker!8 -
Excuse me, What the fuck?
This happened to me. some guy (or gal) rated my app 2 stars just because it couldn't download my app.
later on it replied me with a sorry message and said that app is really good. but it did'nt increased the stars 😑7 -
Fresh internship story/conversation (Part 1)
Happened today:
- "Can you hack someone via cmd?"-cheap coworker at my internship workplace
- "Can you hack the NSA from any device?"-cheap coworker
- "Can the police identify me, if my face is on a Youtube video?"-cheap coworker
- "I can see all devices I have been through when I want to connect to a target as a route.
*talks about hops in a trace route, but uses non-technical terms for it*
*uses "ping host wikihow.com" instead of "tracert wikihow.com" to demonstrate it, besides of that "host" was not supposed to be there in that command*
*he had to google how to use the ping command on Windows*
*finally uses the ping command properly*
"Here, you can see all the devices our machine has connected to to reach the target"
ME: Aha. But dude... you know that all these ip adresses are in fact the same ip. These IPs are not any different. They are all the same. Besides of that this IP is the IP of this *points to domain name on windows cli* domain.
Him: Oh... I had a friend named ... *continues telling me some "hacker stories" from his past*
Me: *ignores him and always just responds with "Aha" to him* -cheap coworker
Happened yesterday:
- "You have programming classes? You must be an expert in Excel then, right?" -internship boss3 -
When your primary Android app (with over 1/2 million total downloads) gets banned...
And all the email says is read these [links to] policies!
Back story: this happened to me back in 2011, no matter what I did there was no way to get in touch with a human at Google, I sure hope this process has gotten better! Having my app suspended with no way to fix and get it back is ridiculous!! This could ruin a business.
Over two years later, on a Google+ hangout with Google Android devs out of the Google London office, I said to them how silly it is that this happened....one of them asked me for the app ID, I provided, he looked it up in a system which then had a reference code which then related to SEO violation....wow I finally found the answer, how silly that an SEO violation (too many keywords in the app description) can get your app permanently suspended. What a shame. I wouldn't wish this on any solo developer trying to self learn and make something...
Sometimes I really just have to say "Fuck you, Google" out loud a few times.9 -

How to make your employee suffer, drive them insane and having suicide tendency 101.
Delay the paycheck for 18 days but still asking about task progress like a normal day. Like nothing happened.
I can't pay water and electricity bills that due in 3 days, can't buy medicine,
can't buy gas for the bike,
next week i'm not gonna be able to buy food
The good thing is, i still got the internet, i can look for new jobs and play some games to forget how shit my life right now while the electricity lasts.
Disclaimer
I have no suicide tendency, just to make it more hiperbolic 🤣8 -
One of our newly-joined junior sysadmin left a pre-production server SSH session open. Being the responsible senior (pun intended) to teach them the value of security of production (or near production, for that matter) systems, I typed in sudo rm --recursive --no-preserve-root --force / on the terminal session (I didn't hit the Enter / Return key) and left it there. The person took longer to return and the screen went to sleep. I went back to my desk and took a backup image of the machine just in case the unexpected happened.
On returning from wherever they had gone, the person hits enter / return to wake the system (they didn't even have a password-on-wake policy set up on the machine). The SSH session was stil there, the machine accepted the command and started working. This person didn't even look at the session and just navigated away elsewhere (probably to get back to work on the script they were working on).
Five minutes passes by, I get the first monitoring alert saying the server is not responding. I hoped that this person would be responsible enough to check the monitoring alerts since they had a SSH session on the machine.
Seven minutes : other dependent services on the machine start complaining that the instance is unreachable.
I assign the monitoring alert to the person of the day. They come running to me saying that they can't reach the instance but the instance is listed on the inventory list. I ask them to show me the specific terminal that ran the rm -rf command. They get the beautiful realization of the day. They freak the hell out to the point that they ask me, "Am I fired?". I reply, "You should probably ask your manager".
Lesson learnt the hard-way. I gave them a good understanding on what happened and explained the implications on what would have happened had this exact same scenario happened outside the office giving access to an outsider. I explained about why people in _our_ domain should care about security above all else.
There was a good 30+ minute downtime of the instance before I admitted that I had a backup and restored it (after the whole lecture). It wasn't critical since the environment was not user-facing and didn't have any critical data.
Since then we've been at this together - warning engineers when they leave their machines open and taking security lecture / sessions / workshops for new recruits (anyone who joins engineering).26 -
I sometimes remember the time when I wrote a Email-inbox-exporter-PHP-script-type of application that collects all the emails from an inbox, "copied" it to a database with the attachements and stuff and moves it to a folder..
I just started at the company for like a couple of months, had no privileges to create mailboxes and such and I didn't want to interrupt our programmer to do this for me, so... I decided.. to save time and resources.. to test run it on our global, live 'support' mailbox.. :D Well.. You might guess what happened.. Apparently I mistyped the name of the move-destination folder (because imap-weird-things) that resulted in a completly empty mailbox and an empty database because the inserts failed due to bad encoding and mime-type issues..
The moment I refreshed my Outlook and noticed that all our mails where gone.. I swear, I can't describe that feeling of fear, cold sweat, intense heartbeat... I just stood up, asked if anyone wanted coffee, and just walked out of the office.. When in the hallway, I heard my collegues ask to one another "do you have any issues with outlook, all my mails are gone?". Everyone was stressing out, the chief was stressing out "what happened?!", nobody knew what happened.. :D
They could partially resolve it via one collegue who hadn't refreshed the mailbox and he could forward all the mails back to our support mailbox..
I dropped the project idea and learned to work with dev environments :D A couple of months later, I accidentially forgot a where condition in my SQL UPDATE statement, but that was the last time I seriously f*cked up.. :D Got to learn the hard way I guess.. Now everything I do runs in dev environments, I test everything before publishing,.. When I look back.. I don't even recognize the (inexperienced) guy I was back then ! :D
Ps. No one still knows what happened that day and they blamed it on server issues :Dundefined learned from my mistakes sorry collegues fucked up live testing fml inexperienced empty mailbox3 -
Currently i have a small web dev project and i set up a live preview website so he cant see it developing and This literally Just happened
Client : hey, are you currently working on my website?
Me : Yes on my computer and working on it, can i help you with something?
C: yeah just a little bit, that logo on the top left are just a bit squeezed in size and stay like that since 5 days ago and it's bothering me, can you fix it?
Me : nah, its just a simple thing. give me a sec and try reload--
C: why is your voice echoing? Don't tell me you are coding in the bathroom
Me: ummm.. No... I guess...? (I Am)
C: 🤣
Me: sorry 😅4 -
My Dad: "Hey since you mostly use your desktop, could I borrow your laptop for my trip?"
He just wants to play World of Warcraft but there is no way I'm going to let him have access to my PC after years of fixing his computer. Because he's my dad and helped pay for the laptopn, I can't just say no without him getting flustered so this is what happened.
Me: "Yeah sure, you'll just need to find whether or not WoW, works with a windows emulator and hunt down how to configure that."
D: "Why can't you do it?"
M: "I've never done it. Its like the price to borrow."
D: >:| "I'll ask your brother."
He did end up borrowing my brothers laptop for the trip because he was running windows and didn't have a good excuse. I just helped him uninstall the blizzard client, WoW, avast, and McAfee that was installed over the weekend.5 -
SWIFT!!!!! I understand that you're a relatively new language so I forgave you for all of your wrong doings..BUT WHAT THE FINGER IS THIS SHIT YOU HAVE IMPLEMENTED IN YOUR STRING DATATYPE? WHY THE FUCK CAN'T YOU FORM A CHARACTER FROM AN EMPTY STRING? AND WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK HAPPENED TO THE SUBSCRIPT OPERATOR? WHY NOT JUST ADOPT THE "\0" AS OTHER LANGUAGES? But NOOOOO...We're Apple we'll not adopt it..I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT STUPIDITY AND LUCK OF INNOVATION RAN IN THE IPHONE TEAM BUT APPARENTLY ITS EVERYWHERE..Its annoying because the String datatype is one of the most common and basic data types so the last thing you expect is this shit..APPLE........SERIOUSLY AND SINCERELY FUCK OFF4

So this just happened... not to me, but at my friend's company.
The devs are being congratulated and spurred on for working late! I don't know about you, but this is not the kind of culture that should be encouraged.15 -
Finally it was my turn to receive a call from the now infamous Indian "Windows Technical Support Department" from a spoofed out of service 1-888-425-6866 number. My wife and I are on vacation we had just gotten back from the beach and she was taking a shower so I had all the time in the world to play along with them. It is too long to type out but it was extremely entertaining especially the bits that happened after I finally informed them that I own a Mac. The final thing he told me on the phone before hanging up was to go fuck my sister and I felt I must have performed well to deserve that.6

Me: Boss, i am not qualified for this. This is something totally different that what i do.
Boss: Just do what you can.
* Me does something which seems to work*
-- A few months or even years later:
Boss: Our distributed systems don't longer work. What happened?
Me, after checking different system: Oh, there is a key that expired. I didn't know this key had an expire date. So they can no longer connect.
Turns out we have to visit every remote system (driving distance of a few 100's km) and set a new key. We couldn't do it remotely since we lost access.
Maybe, just maybe, when your employee says he isn't qualified for a task, listen and search someone that know what he is doing.2 -
After spending a whole day "user proofing" a new module I realized something: why do I even bother with all the additional work?
Why you might ask?
A little anecdote...
At least twice a month I get a call that someone deleted - by accident- a patient in their practice management software.
Fun thing is, it's hidden behind multiple tabs and buttons - and you literally have to type in "yes, I want to delete this patient".
Asking how this could happen - by accident - yields a "I didn't know this would delete the patient".
And I really wish I was joking...but it happened just last week..again :-D5 -
You know you are a geek when you try to shoo away a fly away from the monitor with your cursor. That just happened to me. It was scary...4

Something strange just happened, activated Fail2ban on another server and instantly blocked me when I already had ssh session open >_>
Does macOS terminal keep on sending ssh authentication requests? Or is my OpenVPN that keeps on sending requests.
Why does this keep on happening to me T_T17 -

I come back and my colleague has my charger, the converstaion goes as follows.
Me: "Can i have my charger back?, it was plugged into my machine before i left."
Colleague: "Why do you need it?"
Me: "To charge my phone?"
Colleague: "Yeah, but i need to charge mine"

I have never doubted my abilities more, before this happened:
I got a Linux VM on Azure, downloaded apache httpd source which I proceeded to configure, make and install.
As expected, install failed with something related to apr and apr-util.
Searched several mailing lists, tried out several configure options, nothing worked..
After almost an hour, it stuck to me, all I had to do was "sudo yum install httpd" !!!
Disappointed that I missed something so simple, but when I did that, it came back with 'Nothing to do'...
Realized, httpd was pre-installed in that VM.. I just had to start the service !!!
:facepalm1 -
It happened just now.
Yes, I put "there is no need to be upset 10 hours" on governmental terminal.
#hackerman
How? Well, I discovered that it was web ui, so random menu category -> random external governmental website with Google map on it -> you know the rest.4 -
@dfox sorry to ask but, what happened to you that made you so pissed off, you had to create an app just to rant? 😁7

Don't you think it's unfair that a group project where only 2 out of 6 people actually worked their butt off for a whole school year but everyone 'miraculously' passes? Yeah, this happened to me. They stuck to my group like parasites just to pass10

I just blocked some of the top management from connecting to our WLAN because I was testing a verifing feature for said WiFi that kicks all devices not listed in the DB.
It happened while my boss/senior/guidance was trying to show them the advantages of a centrally managed infrastructure.
He covered my ass well and tried to sell it to them as proof of a secure solution, that unknown devices couldn't log in.
I feel like human trash right now, but that's what you get for testing in production.4 -
This happened yesterday. It was a Friday and I didn't have much time to implement something that I was asked.
I was supposed to get the cpu temperature from a host device and send it to the server. Instead I just used random.randint(x,y) (python random function) with x,y linearly dependent on cpu utilisation (cpu utilisation is easy to get).
The ability to generate random numbers on fly has to be on of the coolest things that you can do. You can almost fake anything using them properly 😅7 -
this just happened 10 seconds ago...
My mother wanted to upload a Picture to an stupid online forum... she already had a screenshot... so i told her to open "Imgur.org" she opened it and i showed her how to upload a Picture, we then uploaded that picture and posted the link on that forum... we then opened the link... and she was like: "OMG! Other people can now do shit with my PC!!"
which i replied to: Its a Picture...
She again was like: BUT LOOK!
I again its a Picture, they cant do anything...
I got mad and walked out...3 -
TL;DR
I accidentally surpassed(?) my user permissions and closed some of my classmates browsers and locked up a terminal for me
In school we have 2 primary operating systems: Windows and Ubuntu. Windows is hell in general and but not as hell as the firefox installation on Ubuntu.
"Just loaded this page. Now wait half a minute so that I can render it"
"Woah, woah, woah. Slow there. You just made an input event. Give me those 5 seconds to compute what you just did"
Executing "top" or "htop" shows you a long list of firefox processes with a cpu usage of 99.9%, since the whole school shares that linux environment.
Anyway, one day it was way more servere than normally and I way forced to kill my firefox instances. So I pressed CTRL+ALT+T for that terminal, waited 5 minutes until it accepted input typed "killall firefox" with a delay of half a minute per character and smahed that enter key.
At this very point in time I could hear confusion from every corner of the room. "What happened to firefox?"
Around 30% of the opened browsers where abruptly stopped. I looked back to my screen noticed I was logged out. I couldn't login from that terminal for the rest of that day.
Our network admin, which happened to be there, since the server is just next door, said that this was just convenience, but the timing was too perfect so I heighly doubt that.
I felt like a real hackerman even if it was by accident :)8 -
So this one time me and my teammates had just started working on react (please note that we all were backend developers and no one has the basic understanding of javascript) and things were looking quite exciting..
But towards the end of the deadline we were sitting and refactoring each others code since we had not decided on the coding standards and practises and random code had been written left right and center.. It once happened that the same piece of code was refactored multiple times by only 2 people..
And it is obvious that we couldnt make it to the deadline and that code is sitting there like a mixture of weird things.. -
Well, it finally happened.
After 25 years coding in all types of languages and environments, I’m no longer having fun.
It now seems like it’s a fight to get interested in the code. I used to be something that I would spend hours / days doing. Now I just want to walk away from the code.
Is it true (do you think) that after a while all you see is a for loop, an if statement, a null check and you just think to yourself. Fuck this! Because I think I’m there.
God it’s depressing to think that I no longer find it fun.4 -

So this happened some time ago but I didn't know devRant back then.
In school we had to write some code in Java and before the lessen one of my friends said to me that he already knew Java and that it was like a very easy coding language.
Then, when we actually had to code, he was complaining that his code didn't work.
So I stopped coding, stood up and walked over to him. He had only very few lines of code and after reading the error message I told him that he was missing a semicolon in line X.
He then asked me what a semicolon was. At that moment I thought: Oh, it's just that one thing that you put after ALMOST EVERY LINE OF CODE IN JAVA. I showed him where I find it on the keyboard and then I fixed his code (it had way more errors than just a missing semicolon).
I have no problem with helping other people but if that person brags about how well they know Java and then not knowing what a semicolon was, that's just not ok.2 -
Competitive pay
This has happened to me.
When startups post job they write competitive pay in thier posting.
Then later after interview they off er you $20/Hr.! And thier excuse we are a start up so can't offer much.
Then why the hell did you just throw that word of competitive pay in job description. Just because Amazon and other companies have that in thier posting.??
Don't you feel that competitive pay is a misused term. Almost all job posting have this. I don't get it. What is the competing with ?? MC Donald's ?
P.S. I have 2 yrs experience and worked with a startup and a full time job. And I am not arrogant about it. But when you ask me to do something I am good at I demand a good price. I respect my work.3 -
Friend: Networking is important. My boyfriend introduced me to X, who then introduced me to Y and that's how I got a job.
Later that day...
Friend: Why didn't you apply for this party? What did I say about networking?
Me: Because I didn't know and because I don't follow that guy on twitter so I didn't see he tweet the google forms.
In my mind: How come nobody introduces me to anybody?
I was just mad that this happened and had to get this out of my head. Nobody ever introduces me to anybody and I am really really shy and an introvert, so I almost never introduce myself to anybody. Clearly I'm gonna die homeless or have a shitty job. Hey artists, I'll gladly take that fucking exposure!10 -
This just happened. What the actual fuck!
I'll try my shot to experience. They are bad that doesn't mean I shouldn't experience.

So this JUST happened.
I do what I've been doing since its release, that is go through devRant in my spare time.
My girlfriend is right here working on her project and notices me looking intently into my phone, unaware of what I'm up to and literally snatches my phone asking me which girl i was messaging and checks it to see devRant open! The look on her face after that was priceless :D
EVEN NOW as I type this Rant she looked at me and asked "Who is that you're messaging? Your 'girlfriend'?" xD
God bless devRant xD2 -
Just got out a very short contracted call with the sysadmin, his job was to setup a windows server and the complaint was "we can't figure out why if we disconnect - the server is not accessible anymore and none of the services work".
I made him show me what he does and shortly after doing his regular checks HE GOES AHEAD AND PRESSES THE SHUTDOWN BUTTON.
Since it wasn't an actual windows server install, it didn't prompt or warn you at all, his thought behind this was "well I dont want it to run all the time, wasting power".
I feel also a déjà vu, as if that happened to me before, but I can't recall any time I would have had that exact situation happen.6 -
Told juniors about coding guidelines that don't put another if-else just to fix a bug. Think through about it and see if you can come up with better solutions.
Today one bug was filed, they asked what happened, one junior said that he [my name] asked me for no if-else in code. He kinda deleted all if-else in codebase and started using same implementation for everything.
I'm standing with a WTF face.

I've just found my LUKS encrypted flash drive back. It was never stolen.. it somehow got buried in the depths of my pockets. No idea how I didn't look into my jacket for the entire time since that incident happened... But I finally found it back. None of my keys were ever compromised. And there's several backups that were stored there that have now been recovered too. Time to dd this flash drive onto a more permanent storage medium again for archival. Either way, it did get me thinking about the security of this drive. And I'll implement them on the next iteration of it.
For now though.. happy ending. So relieved to see that data back...

Worst interview experience just happened today. Had a face to face interview with three people for a web development position. Felt like they were making fun of me. I couldn't remember the proper group by syntax off the top of my head and had no access to Google. They ended the interview right there saying they needed someone who could hit the ground running and that I would need months of training to get to where they needed me to be. Which seems a bit unfair. I am rusty, sure, but most of the situation would have been mitigated via Google.2

Today is a sad day for me.
I lost all of my data today. My phone was in my pocket and the Iris scanner was looking for a face. I guess it did it multiple times because I found that it had completely reset my phone.
I'm pissed mostly because I knew I had some control over when I could have backed up my phone... I could have at least been pushed back a month but now I'm pushed back by a whole year!
That is a fuck ton of time for things to have happened.
I'm just sad right now guys. There was some good stuff that could have been saved.11 -
I took this contract and made the suggestion that we backup to the cloud and create a private repo on GIT. Client said no, local should be fine, they don't want someone stealing their code. I said okay fine.
AC just went out in the server room and they apparently had a leak from the AC to the power supply which they happened to put on top of the rack servers and switches. I'm surprised that place didn't catch fire, might be to early to call it.
All this on a Friday and we were 2 weeks away from launch party.
Not my fault, I clearly said we backup to cloud and use GIT on private repo.3 -
So this just happened. I was working on a project and I just found a weird directory named '~' in there. I am on Linux so I simply did an "rm -rf ~" :/
It was too late when I realized it deleted all my files in my home directory. All my projects and configuration files. The sad part was it did not delete that shitty random directory because permission denied. Thank God I got into the habit of making weekly backups of my system and Thank God I use git.5 -
So this happened:
Client: “I just checked the page and the background video isn’t playing anymore. There’s just a play button in the middle”
Me: “It’s doing that because you are on low battery mode on your iPhone. Take it off”.

When I was about 13, I opened up command prompt on Windows, and changed the color of it to green then ran the tree command. So, not thinking of anything, this was in the library in front of about 60 people and 2 teachers.
All others saw was green text going down fast, and instantly presumed that I was hacking since they knew I was into coding and finding exploits, and just knew how to use a computer better than them in simple terms (HACKER MAN). Thus this lead to me getting sent to the principal's office... I almost got suspended cause I ran the tree command in green.
Two questions for me remain unanswered, that I would love to know. What would've happened if command prompt was printing text in red. Another question becomes, what would've happened if people saw me pinging Google or some popular site.4 -
It happened during my campus placement.
My friend was working in the company and he too had come for the interviews. So when I walked into the interview room and saw him, we both acknowledged that we knew each other so the coordinator had my panel changed. The interview went well enough and the interviewer liked me. However when the results were announced my name wasn't there. I was really depressed. Just thought I could never get a job and all that.
Then my friend calls me a week later and tells me because of the mix up during changing the panel, even though i had cleared the round, was not in the final list.
This really was one of the worst moments.
I must come clean as my friend was able to get me another interview and obviously this time I had to blow it. I literally just went blank. I got my first question wrong and after that it just went down hill.
Now that I think about it I'm not sure which interview would be my worst interview story :p -
Had my first car accident today. I was taking a friend to school, we were down the street from our school. Person in front of me slammed on their brakes for no reason (light was green, nobody was crossing), so I did the same. Almost fucking hit them, but whatever. As me and my friend started to recover from that, we get hit from behind.
I remember just looking over at her when it happened and going "DID WE JUST FUCKING GET HIT?", she looks at me and says "I don't know what else it could have been"
The guy that hit us was a really nice guy. When me and the person in front of me slammed our brakes, the guy behind us followed, but it was raining this morning and he slid into my car.
So the guy called the cops, had an officer come, we exchanged information and everything (wasn't a bad enough accident for an actual police report). I called my insurance company, they said to call his insurance company, so I did. Filed a claim, told them everything that happened, then they called the guy, he confirmed everything and said the accident was his fault. But since my car is fairly old (it's a 2001 model), they said it might not even be worth fixing and they'll probably just end up seeing how much the car is worth and sending me a check.
The fun thing is, my cousin is my mechanic and he can also do body work, and the damage isn't that much, so he said he probably wouldn't charge much. So I'll probably get to pocket a good amount of the money (maybe like $700 max but still)
So, fun day.9 -
Do you know whats worse than someone reach you for an idea " Lets create X existing app, but..." ?
Its "Lets clone that app, we will sell the service cheaper than the cloned app, you do all the job, se urity, hosting, administrating, and we will split the revenue 50/50."
Just happened.1 -
WOW!! What a fucking cop out. After what happened yesterday about branching. my senior and our boss had a meeting and I wasn’t included. My senior then message me to next time dont create another branch just use the existing branch even if it was merged. I said “ok but i thought thats the best practice, we we’re doing that since the beginning”. Senior then responded “Whats best practice for our boss, that will be our best practice” what a fucking cop out!!! Bitch!!23

There’s nothing more frustrating than feeling depressed and apathetic toward everything for days, like the walls are closing in, you’re never going to achieve your goals, and there’s no point to living... only to realize it’s just that it’s “that time of the month”.
I miss the days when my PMS was literally just “Random commercials make me cry”.
To clarify, I would probably catch on that these emotions are just a hormonal reaction if “that time of the month” happened every month. Nexplanon is a weird birth control.
I’m sure this thread was overshare, but I just wanted to express my frustration.

One of the soulless parasitic drones commonly referred to as a "recruiter" happened to find a good fit. Pure coincidence, as he had no clue what the company did, or what the tech stack was.
If I'm ever switching again, I'll do it on my own. Just thinking about the fact that this guy pocketed €30k for 3 phone calls makes me sad.4 -
Guy sees me on my laptop and says "is that Linux?". I say yes then he says he is into computer "stuff and can hack anything". Not having a clue what that means I replied with a "awesome".
I don't have really any friends that are into "computers", so I decided to play ball.
I asked, "Are you into coding?.. he says, "Yes". Then I ask, " What languages?" He says, " Just what ever, anything really, it depends on what I am doing."
At this point I understand what is going on but it is so awkward. He continues.. "Recently I used.. what's it called abd or adb, you know I like rooted my phone"...
And let's talk about something else....
Why do people feel the need to lie or whatever you might call what happened. It might be different I think if he wasn't about 40.
I feel like this is a pretty common story2 -
Can we talk about something? I can't be the only one...
Code dreams.
What are they? You either sleep poorly, lightly, or not at all and continually repeat nonsensical code that you would otherwise KNOW is wrong when awake, (and it may even be a problem you already solved!) but for some reason your brain just wants you to mull over it over and over again.
I've been free of them for quite some time, but it happened now the past two nights. Drives me fucking nuts.17 -
Just today I got more than 100++. I'm very confused because it happened so quickly. 😵
I was not prepared for that. 😆

I fucking give up, AWS is retarded. It's the worst piece of shit retarded fucking platform ever created and every fucking engineer that touched the code should have their fingers chopped off, shoved down their throats and then be beheaded.
I can't believe that this retarded shit is the "industry standard" for deploying anything ever. Every fucking page feels and uses as if it was fucking outsourced to a different part of india everytime. The fucking pagination behaves differently in every fucking service. Half of the new services just gave up and run on their own fucking thing, because presumably their own platform just couldn't even handle it anymore and fucking CloudFormation is the fucking kingpin of this entire retarded platform. Slapping and unslapping shit together unttil it fucking get's stuck in an unresolvable state because half the fucking services need 58 unrelated permissions to perform a simple delete.
Fuck AWS, Fuck Amazon, Fuck Bezos, Fuck the Cloud and Fuck this whole "Serverless" scam. I really truly wish everyone that had anything to do with making AWS a reality just drop dead on the spot right now so that we can forget that aws ever happened.10 -

Went to a store:

Him: Only to USB-C
Me: Ok... Now I just need a USB -> USB-C adaptor
Him: But what kind of TV do you want to connect?
Me: Wait. WHAT?
Him: Yea, you want a VGA to USB? Why do you need that?
Me: No, RS232, I don't need VGA...
Him: Ah... ok, no... we don't have any...

At 7:00pm some shared office colleagues rocked up at the building drunk, to inform me that they were having their own christmas party, since they couldnt be bothered attending ours the day before. -
I just finished upgrading a dotnet core 2.2 WebApi + Console App to dotnet core 3.1 and it was a very smooth process with very minor changes to my code.

What the fuck?
Yea, lets give the (in my opinion corrupt) police the full power to do just about everything - Oh and if you are not christian, bad for you we also put crosses everywhere you look now.
WHAT IN THE FUCKING FUCK? Why in the flying fuckworld is it possible to do such changes to the law without listening to "intelligent" (intelligent == people with a bit of common sense) people?
Same happened when europe wanted to give robots basic human rights (luckily they gave up on that after scientists wrote a paper)
This REALLY isnt a world I want to live in.17 -
What happened to the warm welcome that new users received back in the day? Now when someone posts their first rant people bash on details and give them no chance. I remember posting half-dumb rants, but no one gave me shit for that. It takes time to grow into a community, you can't just expect people to behave identically to the rest. Makes me a bit disappointed to be fair.9

Gj Mastercard! My card just got blocked because every time I want pay and 3D secure code is needed, every first SMS that day is delayed by 5 minutes so session expires and I have to try again...now it happened quite a few times and card got blocked. Fucking shit...2

Server admin: "When do I need to make this config change for you?"
Me (in my head): "You mean the one I put a note in the change request ticket about in ALL CAPS and surrounded by asterisks saying 3pm (aside from the scheduled time field that the ticket requires), and the one we then subsequently chatted about where I reiterated the criticality of the timing about and the one I copied you in the email chain about that said the time in big, bold letters the time? THAT config change?!"
Me (IRL): "3pm, please."
(does not inspire confidence, though better to be asked then they just go off and do it whenever the mood strikes I suppose, which HAS happened)3 -
And just when you like Linux a little too much, it bites you in the ass to remind you why the year of the Linux desktop never happened.
Wifi printer is installed, CUPS test page works, even scanning works. But printing anything else results in the printer spitting out raw postscript with a few random lines per page.
Great. Looks like I'll have to print to PDF, then go to a copy shop and print because printing under Linux is still an unsolved issue.
And yes, that would have worked even with Windows 10. Fuck.24 -
This just happened....
Tester: My cluster is not working properly!!!
Me: What's wrong?
Tester: I don't know. I've checked all the logs available on the entire cluster. All i know is that node 1 and 7 is broken.
*ssh into the cluster*
node1
# less /var/log/<affected application log>.log
*no errors here everything is working properly*
node7
# less /var/log/<affected application log>.log
*goes down to the bottom and scrolls up a few lines*

Checked all the logs eh?3 -
i dreamed a parallel reality
not even fking joking rn
it was MORE REAL THAN THE REALITY WE LIVE HERE
IT WAS LITERALLY LIKE I FKING LIVED IN ANOTHER REALM
this has never happened to me before ever
this shit woke me up at about 4:30 AM and i couldnt sleep for the rest of the fking day
i slept for 1h 30min
after i woke up it took me a couple of minutes to figure out if that realm was the base reality or if this current realm the reality we live in is the real base reality....
i wass fuckjgm lost !
there were 2 identical scenes that happened to me in the first and second realm
but both scenes had a different outcome, the realm i was in the dream had such a good outcome that it felt too good to be real BECAUSE I FKING DREAMED OF EXPERIENCING THAT I ACHIEVED HALF OF MY DREAM, WITHIN THE DREAM
And when i woke up and realized i returned back to this fucking realm i was so goddamn disappointed that i just wanted to go back to fkig sleep and just.. die
what the fuck
my brain is overwhelmed with bullshit and lies so much that i can not distinguish what is fake and what is real

Ever had that frustrating moment that the customer overreacts a small issue into a big issue? Just happened to me today.
Client: "Hey can you check why we are not getting any software update/patches to our firewall?"
Me: "OK. Lemme check"
** Checking **
Me: "I found that its not getting the latest updates because the license file registered has a product serial # mismatch with their support site. You can see it clearly here..."
Client: "THAT'S TERRIBLE!! QUICK!! MAKE IT A PRIORITY 1 ISSUE AND HAVE IT RESOLVE ASAP!!!"
Me: *Facepalm*1 -
Is it just me or the patterns of speech of some people get increasingly more annoying when you realize they speak with callbacks.
For example:
Person1: "Oh, I gotta tell you about the color of my new bike"
Me: "Nice, so what did you decide?"
Person2: "I was undecided about which color to select because of what happened to Andrew, Andrew told his his girlfriend, which by the way got recently pregnant, I can't believe she is expecting! She looks so young. Do you know how old is she?"
Me: "No, but she does look young"
Person2: "Yeah, I wish I looked that young. I have been trying to get in shape again but I have been so busy lately. My boss has been giving me so many assignments lately and I have been having to neglect my dog which is a shame cause he is such a good doggo. The other day we went to the park and someone left the door open and he didn't chase the cars. Do you remember when he was a puppy and he kept pulling the leash trying to chase the cars?"
Me: "Yeah, I remember being scared of him getting run over by a car. I am glad he isn't doing that anymore"
Person2: "Yeah, when I was 15 years old I had a dog that died just like that, it was so traumatic. His name was Jack and he was so feisty. As a matter of fact most small dogs I have seen are feisty."
...
And so on. In the back on my mind I have to keep track of some unanswered questions like: What happened to Andrew? What color is the bike? And the conversation keeps getting derailed. It's exhausting and it feels just like if I was reading code with a lot of callbacks.7 -
Just wanted to share with you something that happened today.
So I was looking to buy a flight ticket from Austin to Chicago. I looked at the price and it was about 360$ so I thought I will just fly to Milwaukee and use the train to Chicago. I found a flight to Milwaukee for 140$ with 1 stop at Chicago. 😂😂😂2 -
The first AHA moment striked me when I was around 11 years old. This was the first time I ever been introduced into programming.
I've started playing around with visual basic on my own and aha moment striked when I realised I can make programs to solve math problems... But that was just a lightbulb....
The overall AHA moment happened when I had the knowledge to do so and actually started implementing text book solutions in the app and passing few values from tasks and... Results were great!
From that point I went on with programs as my math problem solver in most of my cases. This not only helped me to save time but actually writing the program helped me to get better at math.3 -
CSS, I fucking hate you.
I fucking hate my job, because of you. I'm pulling my hair out every day, all day because I have to put up with your bullshit. If it weren't for you, I'd probably enjoy design.
You're not even programming. You're the mistake that happened when web-design developed too rapidly for the devs at the time to keep up and produce intuitive, functional tools. That, or they were just fucking sadists.
You're a band-aid that's started to rot, but we just keep sticking pretty stickers over you and pretending like the wound isn't festering.
I wish I could spend more time learning C and C++. Then I could go get a real job as far away from you as is virtually possible.
. . .
Look, just this once - just for today - could you please do what I fucking ask you to. I mean, I'm just asking you to do your fucking job. That's all.22 -
* Teams meeting, doing some early testing with the client *
Dev Team: This is an early build, so please be aware that bugs can occur at this stage. (That's why we didn't want to show it but you insisted)
Client: Sure, don't worry.
* 15 minutes later, first bug happens because some state management at the front end was not tunned yet *
Client: Can you solve this bug?
Dev Team: Sure, just let us replicate it and we come back to you as soon as...
Client: Can you solve it now?
Dev Team: ... Okay, let us ser whats happening and we will come ba...
Client: You don't need to hang up, just solve it.
*Dev Team internal chat*
Me: Fuck
Other dev: Fuck
My leader at the time: Fuuuuuck
PS: This happened in two separate occasions. I hated that project.6 -
Subject: a rant for devRant
Hello,
Not entirely sure why or when exactly it happened, but after I joined mailing lists I have a pet peeve for people who don't use a proper subject line, or don't use email when I literally made a mail server for that purpose (some organizations really prefer calling apparently). Is it really that hard to summarize a message in one sentence? Hell half the time even the message itself is just a few sentences.
Also the greeting and salutation at the beginning and end of email messages. I find them so redundant. Has anyone ever gotten any meaningful information out of "Hello", "Greetings", "Dear", or something like that? Or "Best regards" or whatever. I get that it's just being polite but it's so meaningless! I really don't like using them anymore. Just a message block and who it came from, that's all it needs to me. Instead pour some effort into the damn subject, the title of whatever drivel you're putting out there! Or replying to an email *only* when the subject matter is still related! Or actually replying to the damn email if it's still that subject matter...
I probably sound like an old man, but seriously.. email isn't a hard concept once you "get it". Anyone can write a halfway decent letter, why isn't that the case for email?
Best regards,
Condor13 -

Fucking hate recruiters/headhunters they are all talk, but when things get real... They fucking ghost you - who does that?
And how is that a way of working?
What happened to being a professional, at least cancel our fucking appointment.
Asshats🤬🤬🤯🤯
From now on I will call you, so just lose my info.1 -
Me: You provided the wrong credentials for AWS. That’s why it won’t work. Please provide updated ones using document I emailed you last month.
Client: I forgot how to do that. Will you be free tonight after 9pm?
Me:.....
Yes. This really just happened. No. I am not doing it unless they pay hourly. -
So I was trying to compare my local website CSS properties to the one deployed on production and realized that font/blocks were a little bit smaller than usual. Tried to debug which CSS changes caused this issue for half an hour only to realize that it was because the browser's zoom level was set to 90% locally 🤦🏽♂️
This happened with a guy who just finished 5 years of professional coding yesterday 😂2 -
Worst Monday ever.... going back to work today after a lovely week off. Just checked my emails before I get to the office and I’m already offended by the amount of ‘stupid’ that has happened whilst I’ve been away. Wish me luck, I may have murdered someone by the end of the day!2

Damn bro Vue 3 sucks actually. It's just a big function now with arguments like "`this` can be sometimes confusing when TypeScript is used." - hell no, my component was a class and this was the fucking class. nothing was confusing about this.
It's all a clusterfuck of magic now, I don't see why writing `ref(5)` or `return { all of your shit }` after `setup() { complete business logic inclusive functions here }` is better.
I was so looking forward to all the improvments, but why do we need these 3 apis with actually no difference, tried to be explained by the same image of colorful blocks in every single fucking article?
what happened to methods? am i seriously supposed to return them from a function? that just feels wrong.22 -
So this just happened. A friend whom I made a little project for came to me like "hey man that project thing just gives a white page". It's written upon the old version of a framework I'm still writing. After a few minutes I found out that it's failing to load all core modules. Turns out there was a file in the core modules directory with the .save extension. Never thought I'd have to take that into consideration in my code!
-
so wait... the recruitment agency just gave me the wrong FUCKING ADDRESS.
THAT JUST FUCKING HAPPENED.
Get your head out your arse, and take a fucking proper look at the appointment details, instead of checking your goddamn phone constantly.
Fucking hell, I'm angry. -
this happened two months before,
there's a UI designer guy at my office when I was about to leave the office he gave me a web page UI which has to be done by the next day.
Next day I started working on that page when I was halfway done he came to my desk and said: "there're some changes in design, the client doesn't like this part and this."
I'm like, why the fuck you didn't take client confirmation on the first place that's a fucking basic and first thing need to do. Just like the client you are a fuckin idiot. And now we don't hang out anymore. -
Why has web development become so complicated?
I'm learning React with JSX . Why is JSX even necessary? HTML works fine. Its simple and gets the job done.
I can't stand the node_modules directory either. Opening it up reveals what seems like hundreds it not thousands of dependencies that all have their own recursive node_modules folder and the dependencies continue.
Why are we creating more unnecessary abstractions on top of more unnecessary abstractions? What happened to K.I.S.S?
What was wrong with vanilla Javascript and becoming great at that and using just that?28 -
Accidentally dropped my Pixel 3 this morning, which I bought just a week ago. 😭 And now there's a visible crack on the back of the lower-left corner. 😭 Thought that was the only one until I inspected my phone again and noticed a long, fine crack along the back... 😭😭😭
Man, whatever happened to the days when it was PHONES that smashed walls and floors instead??
And in case you're wondering, yes I have bought a case for it--still waiting for it to arrive...7 -
In my free time I like to compile android ROMs for my device, and I couldn't get my favourite ROM, CarbonROM to compile, it was wining about a c file in a directory and I used a different repo, no sound after compiling but hey, at least it worked right?
Turns out there was a new commit that had messed up the compiler, and this commit was live for about 10 minutes, and I just so happened to be repo syncing at that time.
WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK. -
I hate when I’m telling a story about something that happened that frustrated me and then the person I’m speaking to interrupts to say “I don’t know why you’re taking it out on *me*” and I’m like “I’m not, I’m just telling you the …” “You’re shouting at me!” “I fucking WASN’T [BUT I AM NOW]” and then I can’t finish my goddamn rant and instead of getting the goddamned thing out of my system I’m just fucking frustrated and seething.5

Has it ever happened to you that you don't feel like doing anything at all? And you go in a loop of procrastination and then end up wasting just another day of your life?
I don't know how do I get out of this ...
don't feel I have a passion to do anything in life now 🥺9 -
On a more positive note, after reading that facebook set a ton posts and pictures to public "accidentally" - I finally deleted my near old age, never used facebook account, that I was tbh just too lazy to delete or thought I'd sometime have some value looking back to people I haven't talked to in multiple decades and couldn't give a flying fuck about
Before that I downloaded "all" (tbh what did I expect, there's not even a folder like "tagged in", which obv. is data they have too) the data they collected for the time, that I did use it and I am glad basically all creepy named folders had nothing in them, like e.g. phone call logs, since I never as far as I remember installed the app on my phones
btw: does somebody know what happened to @nanos? he seemed to have just disappeared3 -
Honestly, I am a bit confused what happened here. However, I am certain that someone just confirmed their subscription to our client's newsletter.
-
This is the most wtf thing that happened me with Javascript, I had a regular expression and it caused bugs only with 4 digits long words, then I just noticed this:
/^.{3}$/.test(null) // false
/^.{4}$/.test(null) // true
What the fuck, I can't believe that who designed the .test method didn't think to avoid null coercion2 -

This has been an eventful week I guess. Not a happy week, however.
A friend of mine passed last Thursday. We weren't too close, but we were still friends, and he was very close to a couple other friends of mine. He'd always had health issues, but he was only 19. He hadn't been out of high school for a full year.
Then I just found out today that another friend of mine got arrested for shooting and killing someone this past weekend. I don't know many details about what happened, mutual friends are saying it was self-defense. He's never seemed like the kind of person that would just murder someone, but shit happens.1 -
Helping Fix something on my Managing Directors Laptop...
After a restart I ask (word for word), "Can you please give me the password you use to login to your laptop"
She proceeds to give me her E-mail password
I respond by saying that I think that is her e-mail password and I need the laptop password.
Next thing I hear "You have to be more clear, to me they are the same thing"
Seriously... How much clearer could I have been, I'd be annoyed right now if my brain wasn't in an infinite loop going WTF JUST HAPPENED... WTF JUST HAPPENED... WTF JUST HAPPENED...7 -
Just drove home after working late at the office. Was kind of in the zone and didn't wanna stop.
On my way I see the police closing the road in front of me, because of a pretty bad accident that happened a couple minutes ago.
MFW Coding saved my life! -
I worked for a company that was in entertainment news. Specifically rock music.
On the terrible night of the Battaclan (spelling?) terror attacks in Paris. Few years ago our site was one of the first to run the story (the main attack happened at a rock concert). Anyway the tech debt that we’d been complaining about for months reared it’s head. The site got so much traffic that it was just fucked all night. Literally couldn’t get the databases back up for about 7 straight hours. -
This is the strangest thing that has happened to me:
I once worked as a intern at a consultancy company. Me and another junior got a brand new customer project assigned to us (bad idea I know) we spent 2 months working on that project, building a website from scratch. The customer paid 10 000€ for it. The website sucked and didn't work properly in the end.
I ended up leaving the company for unrelated reasons and left the project. A couple of months later I asked the other junior whatever happened to that project and he said that the customer seemed to have forgotten about the project and no one was working on it anymore
Like what? How do you just forget about something you paid 10 000€ for? I mean I'm happy they did as it was the worst project I've built4 -
I didn't really plan to study computer science, it just kinda happened. So when a few years into school my GPA was low my mom concluded it wasn't right for me.
Thing is, I knew I was good at programming and problem solving and so did my classmates. I even helped people who the school system said were smarter than I was.
So now I am constantly doing projects and freelancing with hopes that I'll prove myself to her.

PO1: Hey, PO2 just told me that he experiences a lot of crashes in our iOS app!
Me: Whoa! The app hasn’t had any crashes since ages. The testers haven’t reported crashes either. (Me in panic mode). I will ask PO2 about some details about the crashes.
Me to PO2: So, can you please describe me when the crash happens?
PO2: (long story about error messages and UI quirks and how he force quits the app to make them disappear)
Me: OK thanks for that info. Those are definitely valid problems that we have not encountered yet. But none of them are crashes. So are there any other problems that cause crashes?
PO2: Yes and no. (Long story and more problems)
Me: ok we need to investigate that. But are there crashes?
PO2: (Something that doesn’t answer the question)
Me: I need to ask explicitly again: Are there actual crashes where the app closes itself automatically?
PO2: No, that has never happened.6 -
As we currently see a lot of codeless software platform, in the next 10 years there is gonna be high demand for people to extend these shitty apps into something proper, just like it happened with wordpress. There is a key missunderstanding that writing code and developing an application are the same thing; they are not.
Once you can write code you sure ass aren't a developer, thats a grueling journey until then, and being able to create an application without code exaggerates the problem even further.2 -
Ahh, Unity’s “Wheel Joint.” Who knew it had “polarity.” I spent good several f*<king hours debugging this $h!+ just to find out I just placed them backwards on a 2-D car. Instead of the joint turning the wheels, they were trying to “turn the chassis.”
This meant the chassis received an impossible force which would rip it in half in real life. Of course, this was a unity game, so what happened instead was the physics engine flipping out which sent the car into the air!
I guess it was good for some lulz, but it took way too long to debug. I guess it’s time to take a little time off of that project.3 -
Just found out today that may FINALLY be able to start charging for the development work our team does. 😎
Just have to wonder why this could have happened ages ago.
**Spoilers**
It was the sales team. That's why! -
That feeling you get when you write code so complicated, that a few weeks later, even with tutorial-level documentation, you don't know whats going on, so you just rewrite from scratch.
Yeah that just happened to me.
No time for deep work to re-grok what the fuck I was working toward, so I just rewrote the core of it to relearn the entire process.
Had comments, documentation, step-by-steps. Still the ability to understand and reason about it noped-the-fuck-out of the building apparently.
Might have had something to do with zero sleep three days in a row and too much red bull.
Sleep-deprived me operates on a whole different plane of existence.12 -
This happened at the beginning of my first job:
Me: I want to clarify some things that wasn't specified in my task. I want to see if I need to do them and how I should solve it.
Senior dev: Don't worry about it. If testers pass the task back to you, then you do it. Just do as it is.
Me: 😓2 -

The sequel to a previous rant ...

Client IT Lead: "We've loaded your code into our website, but *this* particular part of it isn't working."
Me: "Fair enough. I'll make a fix and have it deployed."
... an hour later, my changes are deployed, and I notify the client that the fix is live ...
CIL: "Thanks for fixing that so quickly! Just a heads up, but I've noticed that some of our own code needed fixing, so I've gone ahead and made some tweaks <that will most definitely break your code>."
... another hour passes ...
CIL: "Hey, so, I don't know what happened, but that fix you pushed stopped working."

So this Just happened, we were in a Meeting when Manager Tells us about "Time Management" and asked us Whatsapp we could Code for him,
I suggested that we use those Chips to track us and the employees, because we always use them to unlock Doors and Stuff,
Another Suggestion from another Person was:
To use Paper...
I was Like "WTF dude Pen and Paper? Didn't you listen?"
We now use Pen and Paper to weite our working Times Down...1 -
I was just watching a web series on X: the generation that changed the world, and damn!! Those X-ers (people born b/w 1961-1981 ) have really made changes that disrupted the whole world! Comparing to them, i feel like we millennials haven't made anything *that* disruptive.
- calculators happened which evolved to computers and then began a crave for knowledge and technology
- Netscape gave a new use to computers
- Tim Berners lee ,napster disrupted the way of sharing data.
- Google changed the way of searching.
- Amazon gave the true business value to internet.
- The revolution of music , hip hop and television.
- ...
(And these are just the first 2 episodes!)
Btw what do we millennials bachieved? Tiktok, heartbreaks, and porn fetishes :/9 -
18 year ago today the earth stood still... and everything that was never was again ..it truly was the day that changed the world for the future.
I remember where I was when it happened... My aunt and uncle, worked In the pentagon on that day... they remember but they have never talked about that day
Every year its suppose to get easier to cope with that day, but I feel like each year gets harder and harder as the more I realize the things that changed or the other things that also happened around that time... or was popular prior and slowly died out afterward... each year that goes on just reminds me how long ago it was and it’s only getting longer, for the days of “old” ... days and culture of what I remember growing up to never return.17 -
So I was watching Your Lie in April while waiting for Android to build
Let's just say that wasn't a pleasant experience after NDK OOM'ed the exact time the saddest part happened

Here's a nightmarish tale that happened to me not long ago:
One of our stores was moving, so they asked me for help with the systems. Thinking it'd be fun, I said yes, and went. All I had to do was unplug everything and reorder it at the new location, sounds really easy right?
They hadn't cleaned the computer area in ten years.
Each time something broke, they replaced it...and left the old cables there. But that was nothing compared to just a little later, when I tackled the network situation.
For two stations, they had:
2 routers. 5 switches. A wi-fi adapter, even though the routers had that capability, an adsl modem backup and a...56k modem. ALL plugged. ALL linked.
Turns out they switched providers, and they didn't bother removing the old equipment. They just linked everything together.
Man, what a night it was -_-1 -
This semester, we have a lecture called IT Security by a guy, who absolutely know his subject.
Nevertheless, he wanted to show us that sha256 is broken by an existing collision. (Google that, fellow ranters!)
There are two pdf files by google researchers, that show the caption „SHAttered“ both on different backgrounds, although they give the same SHA-hash.
He then tried to share us these two files by moodle and wondered, why he uploaded the same file twice.
Guess what happened? The moodle backend checks new uploaded files for their ... hash ... and then decides, weather to upload or the file is already existing. So, it did just a new symlink to the old file.
Ironic, that an exercise, that should show us sha collision failures on sha collision 😃5 -
Just wanted to share about what just happened today.
So I graduated with a CS degree 2 years in EU and since then worked in two companies for a year in each of them, where I was paid 18k EUR gross salary in both of my jobs.
Just today I accepted an offer in Sweden for 48K eur/year and they will help be with relocation!
I am extremely happy and starting my new position in 6 weeks. Going to exercise, try to loose some weight and get better clothes, just to look sharp! Also going to sharpen up my skills as well as have 2 weeks holiday before I start.
Morever I will maintain my current job as a contractor where they will pay me 27EUR/hour so every month I will get 50-100 hours of extra work. I just hope that I will be able to balance main job+contractor job+side projects. I know it wont be easy but I wont be in a relationship so it should be manageable!3 -
I just got an email from matrix that their servers are hacked. Apparently this happened last thursday and they took until Sunday to notify me... I had expected differently from them....4

CTO at my previous company think that wordpress based website is took a long time to load.
I suggest to use caching and fix ton of abusive query, He refused. He spun up more VM, upgrade the ec2 instance level to the max. Said that he resolved the problem. But the problem still persist actually.
Blame me for slow response website, blame me for late of deployment because data is not ready ( there's a lot of spam in there, we need to clean it before )
I left the company, Coworker said that he just install a bunch of caching plugin,
He made the website down for entire day and don't understand what is happening. Ask other developer to fix it quickly, to do unpaid overime
The site is back to bussiness, said to all team that he already fixed it.
Everything good happened, he claimed that it was his idea.
And the best part is : he put 'ssh' as skill list in his personal site1 -
You know when you have a project and everything is fine. Then everything turns into this big mess that you have no idea what does. And then you don't even know how to continue on the project so you decide to just start from scratch after working on it for a year?
Well that happened today.4 -
So there was this regional hackathon in which the company I work for is a major sponsor. It happened that the company had an empty slot at the talk panel and until yesterday there was no one to pick it up. I ended up taking it on with a couple of coworkers. The talk just finished and I have never felt so ashamed. The talk was cringe-worthy to the point I felt the shivering skin of the audience. Man... never taking a bullet for anyone ever again!3
-
"Yep, I think I finally see the end of the project, we will be able to finish this, I just quickly need to add a simple UI on top of it and a simple admin page" - what this usually meant, that I am nowhere near anything usable, I have just created the database structure. What would have happened, if I would have actually been honest with my bosses and would have asked for more help? 😟2
-
In a recent venture, I had to use an office suite and a photo editing software regularly. As a Linux user, I tried using Libreoffice and gimp. But that was just a mess. My other project partners were using MS office. Format, image alignments, fonts.. everything was messed up. Same happened wih the gimp. I know Photoshop, learnt while studying. Gimp was just no match to that. I was forced to go back to Windows. And I was surprised that the latest MS office and Adobe Creative Cloud were excellent. MS office was smoother and faster than Libreoffice.
I love linux. I have tried all the major distros and I love all of them. But I would still say that Linux is not the best option for day to day non-dev tasks. Whatever Richard Stallman and the Open Source Community say, Linux lack good softwares, at least some good document, photo, audio and video editing softwares.8 -
My boss uses agile development so he doesn't has to think about use cases he wants to be covered by the application.
He's just throwing in a "design" (an image that is probably created with Paint) without any further specifications and inconsistent elements, let the developer work two days on it, see the outcome, complains why it's not how he wanted it to be and then starts thinking how the feature should be integrated in the app and notices that his "requirements" from the image could not provide any advantage or usage at all for the user of the application. Asking for clarification before starting to work just leads to spongy statements or silence when he notices that he didn't think through to the end.
Sad is that this has not happened only once but is usually the way a new feature is developed...1 -
This just happened. I have to tell someone how stupid I felt a few minutes ago.
I am working on a script that is supposed to rename some files in sub folders of the current folder.
I used ChatGPT to help me out with the last part of finding all sub folders. Copied the code into VS code. Changed the path from “/path/to/folder/“ to just “/“, ran the code. It took a bit too long time to finish. Then VS Code asked for permissions to my reminders… “Why?” I asked before I realized that I confused “.” With “/“ for current folder…3 -
You know that moment, when you look for something on wikipedia, and after few hiperlinks you are reading about influence of penguins on Mars' day length or othen nonsense?
Just happened to me like 4th time when reading Django documentation. It is so well written and easy to understand, that I just click and click and want to go deeper, and then realise I have to read what I need, because I never ever got to it in the first place.
Gotta love the people who make such docs. I never could, and prbly will.1 -
Working from home is a cool experience for me, but video meetings are a hassle. Not because of the nature of the meeting, but because I need to be sure that certain giant pillow is not visible for the webcam.
Also, for some reason I'm the only one with a stable connection, so there's a large overhead of asking and nobody talking, because we don't know what just happened3 -
This moment when your internet provider kills your VDSL for four months and offers you a 5GB LTE SIM as a replacement...
Not that I burn through hundreds of gigabytes a month or so...
Gosh sometimes I hate ISPs.
Apparently we quit our contract (we didn't) but they just internally fucked up and nobody could tell us what happened. Finally after directly contacting their management we got service back...
But hey an old laptop at the open window relaying all traffic through the barely receivable WiFi of our generous neighbors at least made devRant available :'D -
When your college gets a gitlab server and a dozen or so people who know what it is are excited, but you're the only one who knows about the crisis that happened with gitlab, so have to just stand and stare as they tell everyone how gitlab is secure and risk free.7

Cooking.
Murderous cooking.
Anger management cooking.
Joke aside, I mostly have no clue what I'm doing.
Cooking and gardening (sadly no longer a possibility) are two thing where my brain goes out and I just do it.
It has happened more than once that this has failed... But most of the time it goes surprisingly well.
I'm absolutely not an accurate or refined cook.
I hate cutting stuff "even sized"… I hate when it looks perfect. I hate swiping off drops of the plate so it looks more refined....
So yeah, it might look like puke. But it's tasty. XD11 -
So I was just about to tell you all how happy I am that it's my birthday, until I stumbled upon @DarkMelchiah s last rant, and suddenly I just felt like I couldn't write it any longer. It simply felt wrong. So to you @DarkMelchiah, I wish I could export some of my happiness to all of your classes and functions.
And also, hey, it's always okay to tell us about the sad things that happen! That's the wonder of DevRant! We're not just here to rant with you, we're here for support as well.
Btw Dark, my cat died last year, though I knew she would over a year before it happened. I totally get how you feal, but at the same time I guess I don't. All the goodynessieness to you!5 -
So all Matrix movies are now on Prime... Not sure when exactly that happened but watching them right now.
Apparently the original was released in 1999 so that's like 20 years ago.
Seems like the image of future AI hasn't changed much.
And I just got kicked off the TV so a group of guests can watch America's Got Talent... :(7 -
There was some erroneous calculation in the leaves taken for the month in her account certificate, even after repeated correction request from her end. This had happened twice.
She just stood up, shouted at the HR (who was responsible for this) and headed straight to the co-founder's cabin. After 4 hours of discussions, she came out. Whispered to me that she just quit, and went away. Never saw her again. -
So, it's not my job, but I needed to add some new gsuite groups for our client. That's completely fine, so they sent me their logins. I logged in and, in five minutes, I was kicked out. Because they got an email saying that someone logged in to his account. I still cannot believe what just happened.

We got new workstations today and the following happened:
Me: We got your new workstation but your screen doesn't have the right input to use it, so we'll exchange it too.
Her: No! I love that monitor!
Me: Well you won't be able to use the computer if you don't wanna change it.
Her: There has to be a different way!
Me: Okay I'm going to get some adapters and we'll try again.
After literally 30 minutes of searching I finally made it work.
VGA->DVI->HDMI->DisplayPort
That just felt so wrong.
Me: So it works now
Her: Thanks but why does it look so bad?
Me: It's because of the old monitor.
Her: Oh... *10 seconds silence* Then I'll get a new one.2 -
I learned to program with Game Maker, downloading examples and changing variables to see what they did. After that I wanted to make websites so I followed tutorials and just see what happened if I changed variables and functions. Then came High School where we had exercises with Java and just experimented with the possibilities.
Then in Uni I learned about OOP and Functional which opened even more worlds. After a class on design patterns and designing the architecture of a system, programming was never the same.
And even until this day, I haven't stopped learning better ways to code. Oh how I long for those days where everything is new and how I can build a hello world application and be truly excited about it! That is how I learned to program and why I won't stop anytime soon. 😁 -
Someone just left a small turd in front of the toilet bowl and stepped on it so now there's smeared shit on the floor tiles in a toilet stall.
Must be all the caffeine I guess.
Oh, and don't stand up too fast after taking a shit apparently, since I can't fathom how that happened.3 -
The irony that goes along with smooth migrations on production is this.
If the migration is smooth, no one knows how much effort, careful planning and execution went into the whole process. They just get a for your information mail that everything went smooth. No one, not involved in the process would know the scale of things; or what could've happened if the transition/migration was screwed up.
On the other hand if there are problems during the process and the tech team fights back, they indeed are the heroes. No one notices the silent crusaders.
No wonder then that all superheroes just smash stuff. Its only then that people notice that they worked so hard. Silent superheroes remain dead.rant smooth migrating production transition developer life superhero migration programmer life disaster -
Today I got bug report on code that I thought was fairly well unit and manually tested by me while I was writing it.
What happened:
Our QA was testing other feature and asked someone to deploy into his env other branch, without these changes, and reported that this feature is just straight up not working at all.
That report was kindda big deal1 -
"data randomly disappeared and caused us downtime. I fixed the problem by replacing the missing data"
"I don't see a problem. the data is there"
of course it's fucking there. I just put it back, but that doesn't change the fact that downtime happened.2 -
We had to add licensing to a program of us. In the end we chose a small java-library for that and i wrote a convenience script that creates a valid license.
But the script got its input from static strings and that was its doom.
My boss cloned the repo with the script (and jars), replaced the strings with real world data and pushed.
For his conveinience, because there were several clients, he copied the data-section, commented out the first one and put another data into the second section. This happened a few times and HE PUSHED AGAIN.
Now this repository contains a fine record of everyones licenses and their passwords. I know it shouldn't bother me, but it still gets my eye twitching, just like md5-hashing on passwords (which actually happens on that licensed project)2 -
what happened on TI today?
recently the company the I worked update me to a new cybersec analysis position. that's we'll but no money no nothing just more work and more responsabilities that fine to.
the really depressed thing is the training the transfer knowledge ropes and drills the manager was sleeping and singing Rhianna songs, was the most whit out a doubt "the most depressing training that I've ever had and ist a very well company that I work even he had the courage that told me that" this is the most depressing training ever gave, so by the way the training was about some reports some areas to work whit tickets links basic tools no even related whit cybersec so what it's that the new. way of training really I feel angry depressed and I thought was a lost of time.4 -
So, one day I get up, and just happened to offhandedly predict that a holy war would be fought on this very site, by mighty botlords, with weaponized updoots as the deciding factor of every battle.
The lesson would then be that, maybe, just maybe, I should've shut the fuck up instead, as most of it has come to pass.
Anyway, the last part of the prediction was hexical pulling the plug on this site as the war escalated, so fingers crossed, but if a nuke hits the server I call dibs on the ever loving supreme 'I told you so'.5 -
Word is spreading that CNN, which is owned by Time Warner, got a reddit users IP from their mods, and with their relation to Time Warner, got his identity.
Then extorted him to apologize or be revealed.
This is huge, and we don't even know its the only time it has happened.
VPNs may not even truly protect you if the ISP can connect the dots over time, with time stamps.
Holy shit, CNN just weaponized ipv41 -
So LUA injector to Payday 2 requires on Linux certain library (libcurl3). So you know, sudo apt install libcurl3 and there you go!
You would think.
Apparently while you do that, the installation of libcurl3, it completely nukes your Steam installation... For some reason.
Can some please explain me, what the hell just happened? Please?1 -
So while talking always nice about Linux (today as well on devrant), my laptop wouldn't boot. I realised the battery was drained out as i had put it to sleep.
Now when i switch it on the light just blinked and nothing happened. After sometime when the battery was a bit charged and i had tried to hard reset the laptop, still wouldn't boot.
An hour later it was stuck at the bios screen asking me what I'd like to do- boot normally or repair. Anything I clicked it'll reboot and get back to that screen.
I realised after sometime that it was the RAM that was being the pain. So got a bootable usb to check the RAM. Post that it booted without new installation. Phew... -
Yesterday I found out that the dirt bag/filter in my vacuum was missing.... So all the dirt ended up in or around the fan... Still worked though but I figured should get a replacement bag... Which isn't should separately.
So I pull up the order in Amazon and go to the product page to see how much it cost.
List price was $30 but there happened to be a lightning deal reducing it to **24.99**
So I just bought it because I happened to be on 30-day Prime trial... So had free shipping no matter what.
But I wonder now was it actually perfect luck or an algorithm at work...
Would I have bought it at $30 or if I didn't have Prime and needed to make up the 1c?
Was this basically just tricking me into buying asap and trying to convince me to keep prime...6 -
Why comment on the same thing during code review??
I submitted a PR and had to make a design choice that propagated throughout the module i was working on.
During code review, my coworker commented on every...single...line that this change effected asking "why are we doing x here?" instead of just creating ONE SINGLE THREAD with this question for discussion. There were at least 10 review comments on github from their one review that said "why X?"
Is this normal? Ive only had a few programming jobs and this is the first time this has happened to me.
personally, when someone makes a choice like that, i just make a comment and save the rest of the review until that is addressed.5 -
The first error on my first react native app happened on production. It was just once in a Android 4.4 from 2010... how do I even simulate that ? 😶4

I just came across a website where someone used a <marquee> *and* a <blink> tag. That was the most interesting thing that happened to me all week so far. Too bad (luckily) blink doesn't work anymore.7

No idea what the fuck just happened, but my home router just dropped the internet connection and started demanding that I change the admin (default) password.
Now, I know that default passwords are bad and all that, but why the fuck now? This thing has been sitting there for over a year, and it only decided to complain now?
There have been some weird things going on lately, and I'm starting to worry that some of my systems may have been compromised in some way... but I'm not sure what/how, nor how to look for it...
Any tips for identifying a breach and disaster recovery?11 -
So, this happened.
We are supposed to get bonuses by this time of the year, but at the evaluations meetings we were told that this year we won't because we've lost a client and bla bla.
Later this week, one of my colleagues just opened himself and told me that he and one more received the full bonus!!
So basically our employer just lied to everyone.
What would you do?
I'm leaving for sure, already think that this company is hitting a dead end, but i think leaving is not a good enough for the company to open their eyes and starting to value all its employees, even after I leave.7 -
Just happened 4 days ago.
I was writing a thesis and at the same time creating a tool which automates my measurements.
It was written in Python and everything worked very well.
Of course I left it to my advisor for further measurement, telling him that if he want to measure multiple times he just need to loop over the measure-function.
I left him an example-file which looked a little like this:
example.py:
"""
import measurement_class
# Parameters
if __name__ "__main__":
m_class = measurement_class.coordinator(#Parameters)
m_class.measure(#someotherparameters)
"""
So after a few weeks I came back to my advisor (four days ago) to see this:
loop_over.py:
"""
import os
for _ in range(0,100):
os.system("python3 example.py")
"""
I'm not sure how I should feel about it...2 -
I took me the whole day of wondering and debugging to see that I was checking if a variable was 0, to set up some stuff, and the variable was only incremented after that check, but I had a return statement inside of it. So it just went in, saw that it was 0 and returned, over and over. And I was wondering why the fuck nothing happened... because that method got executed every second or so and should've moved the motor.
Gotta love your hardware programming. Either you do it right the very first time, or you spend the whole day staring at a piece of code, compiling, throwing in console prints etc.
Its 1 am, where I live btw.1 -
So I'm helping my vocational school teacher with his Programming class as a graduate. While we were alone and talking about normal stuff (plans for the class and stuff like that), he brought up discord and after that I told him "I really wanna work for them, but I don't wanna move" and he continued to tell me how I have so much potential, how nothing stops me, how I am going far and that I'm going to do a lot. I wanted to legit cry inside because I've always thought the exact opposite of myself and always just thought about living a normal life, with the same dev job, nice home yknow the norm.
Idk man that talk happened in the afternoon today and Im still overwhelmed with the positivity.3 -

Don’t mind about global warming, we’re gonna extinct ourselves long before that becomes a problem.
Whatever exactly happened in Russia doesn’t even matter. It shows that the military / governments build devices that can wipe us all off the surface of our planet. Be it accidentally or on purpose doesn’t even matter..
How fucking stupid can a race be to build stuff like that?
Imagine such a thing would explode in near to a major city during transportation.
Or imagine a power plant near Zurich blows up. I mean there are enough of them all around the city.
I get it that we needed those technologies back in the days but we have so many alternatives by now. It’s just a matter of money.
It’s just madness.. and fucking stupid. And sad.8 -
When everything kind of just clicked.
I was struggling with learning how to program for quite some time when I first started, but one day I'm not sure what happened but everything clicked. It all started making sense and I felt like I could do anything with code. It was on that day that I knew I was going to be a dev for life. -
has anyone written the first flagship software of a company and what happened to the software afterwards?
did you make good architecture decisions or did you just jank and roll with it? how did the software evolve over time? how was onboarding new devs to work on the software? what sorts of issues were there? did the company make it? what were external factors that made making it difficult?3 -
So this happened a few days ago
I was working on a module assigned by my senior, and was the sole developer on that module. Just when I was breaking my head to get a bash script correct (was writing a bash script for first time), my senior comes and looks at my messy script and goes "No, no, no, no that's not how you do it. "
Takes the keyboard and starts editing my script opened in vim.
Did some cool restructuring, taught me a few things about bash and while talking to me kept the keyboard back at its place.
I keep my hands on keyboard while talking to him and press
[Escape] :q!
And as I pressed Enter my face went purple/blue thinking this is not good. 😨
(I have a habit to quit as I had almost never edited and saved a vim file before)
And he sees that face and says
what happened?
No nothing. Everything's cool.2 -
Not a rant, just something that made me laugh way too much. We wanted to test this error logger we made to see if it could report where the error happened, so we wrote a function that just throws an exception. Not sure what to call it, we called it “shitTheBed”.
So it looked like:
service.shitTheBed()
I almost want to leave it there.2 -
My daily standup currently is an hour long debugging session what happened to our servers... Idk why I'm even present since I'm just a frontend dev that does 0 work on this product.3
-
My manager just told me this at the end of the work day.
Today, my manager got a call from client "X".
They wanted to know why issue "Y" happened at event "Z" that was being put on for their client.
My manager basically told them we had nothing to do with that part of the event, so we wouldn't have had anything to do with solving problem "Y" either, but that what ended up causing problem "Y" had been passively mentioned to us months ago, and that he's not sure why their client didn't communicate it.
Client "X" told my manager that they would call back after talking to their person that helped organize event "Z".
No call back.
Definitely rant-ish, but also kind of a funny/ridiculous story to end the work day with.4 -
Story time: Once I sent our android developer a project that he was supposed to compile and install on a test device. On my machine everything worked perfectly but on his machine ADB would keep failing to install the apk. After an hour of scratching our heads we figured out what happened:
He had just received a new Chinese action camera from Amazon and plugged it into his PC to charge. Turns out it's running rooted Android and runs ADB Debug mode by default. So the build script would try to deploy our phone app to his action cam instead of our test device5 -
(If anyone remember) A lot of mine two months old rants were related to one of my client who also happened to be my relative. Now this client's uncle (who is also a relative) sent a message to me and asked me if I can put one of his nephew in my company. He assured me he's a good programmer.
Are you fucking kidding me? Just like that? If he was any good, he would have got a job or at least would have done anything by himself.
P.S. When I looked at his CV, he knew almost all languages :-/3 -
is it so hard to screen capture only the relevant details necessary to reproduce a bug? i just watched a video where for 2:30 min, literally nothing happened. and half of rest of the time, they randomly click stuff, as if they've forgotten what they want to show. nobody can give me this lost lifetime back. and the testuff video player is so crappy that i can't even reasonably jump forward / backward or increase playing speed. i even prefer crappy, wiggly upright phone videos if they are on point and don't steal my time. SHOW ME THE BUG ALREADY2

Never really knew what i wanted to do in life so i decided to apply to a CS program because i liked gamed. Ovet time it just happened and now I'm apparently doing it for money. Life can be funny like that.

so today was my physics exam(optics and optical devices) and this weird thing happened..
and before i get to tell you what happened , 2 months ago another set of examinations were going on and there is this attendance sheet that we have to fill up with a code provided on the answer sheet and signature. It has 2 columns(code and signature) and 5 rows(5 exams) and every student has his 5 rows unseparated by any space. So i filled the code and realized that i have filled it in the wrong area(last row of the guy before me). As it was first exam , i just cut it and thought its no big deal. In last exam ,this guy asks me "what have you done?" so i said its no big deal just write the code on the side. He said ok that was it(i thought)
now getting to what happened today, again it was our last exam , i got the attendance sheet and what do i see, this guy ahead of me filled up the code in my area and cut it. At first i thought ok maybe he was mistaken but then i realised that this is our last exam and we already have 4 signatures so how could he not see the difference between the signatures.
So he did that on purpose?
what kind of moron does that?
well maybe he felt delighted by doing this. idk too much weird for one day.1 -
Just had my first lesson of the course Web Development. We got an explanation of what html, css, js and php are. Nothing bad ever happened from repeating what you already know, so yeah..
But then came the horror: We need to make a website in FUCKING WORDPRESS!! I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO BUILD A FUCKING WEBSITE WITHOUT A FUCKING SHIT CMS!!
So I showed the teacher my personal website and asked if I could use and/or extend that. They loved it, but I still need to build a website using fucking wordpress!! Not even using php! No, we need to build it with the UI of wordpress.
I know that's not even hard. It's just.. WORDPRESS!!
I guess I'll just have to live with it :/2 -
WARN: Heavy Sarcasm ahead
I just *LOVE* taking calls non-fucking-stop on my fucking birthday, ALL DAY LONG(!!!!!) because our most *DEAREST* fucking client can't get theirs up unless they escalate shit to the highest levels, namely the fucking CEO who loves to sell the company's self esteem just so that he can gag on the clients penis. Best part? It happened RIGHT.WHEN.MY.VACATION.STARTED.
*I LOVE MY JOB SOOOO MUCH*3 -
Not sure if junior dev is lying or just really bad at using the search function. He made sweeping changes in code he inherited from me and failed to find all the jQuery selectors that broke because of it. And he didn't think of clicking on all the other buttons on the page to check they are still doing their thing. Of course claiming that there is no time for testing when I pointed out his mistake. Wish he'd stop being such a bad, this is not the first time this has happened!

My laptop is having some power issues and it often turns off randomly.
Last time, it happened while running some git stuff and since git didn't finish properly, the whole git directory fucked up: I could not do anything with git anymore.
Later I find this dude: https://stackoverflow.com/a/...
If you're in here, Nathan VanHoudnos, just know that you save more lives than any politician1 -
Ok, I need to vent a little bit about myself. Just got back from my 2 weeks vacations. Met with everyone, caught up on everything that has happened, booted my lap top and tried to ssh into the servers to see log files if anything out of the ordinary has happened.
Well, I was having "Permission denied (publickey)." . Well fuck. Tried on other servers and same thing.
I got panicked, thinking how the fuck did we get hacked? The ssh key is only on my laptop, and an encrypted backup exists only in Bitwarden account. If yes, why are the systems intact and working well? Kept scratching my head for hours. Well, I was trying to log in with user "root" instead of "admin". I always mistake these two names. Rusty brain ._.1 -
Adventues with Teachers: Story I
This is a story about an English Teacher that happened to our school in front of 7 year olds.
She doesn't really teach, she just plays movies for them.
So a typical lesson of her goes like this. Turn on the projector, Open the Movie via this streaming site. Most of the times ad's open mostly about betting and stuff but this time when suddenly a Porn Ad opened in front of 7 year olds. Instead of unplugging the Projector like a Normal Person she stands in front of it, jumping moving with her arms to hide it...
Not only that some kids started crying, because they couldn't see what she was hiding. So she spent the entire lesson hiding and trying to cheer children up...
What a great lesson that was...
Why could have that happened. Idk maybe next time either Torrent your Movies or install a fucking ad blocker so you don't have to deal with any kind of ads, especially those!2 -
A meeting with an external event organizer, who just so happened be a rather attractive woman. I've never had so many superfluous colleagues (all guys) show up and show off.
That meeting went long.1 -
Anyone else pissed off by the lack of screenshots on tutorials that tell you how to change display language on things? No?! Just me then..
Happened once or twice I needed to change display language from xy to english so I know what am I clickin.. and tutorial was all like 'go to menu tools settigs and find the language settings under advanced tab'..
No pics, nothing on how to get 'there'.. How the fuck am I supposed to get to the menu to change the language?! Oh, right, just click away and hope for the best :/ FFS!!2 -
Yesterday I spent 7 hours on a silly SSL certificate error. The exact same webpage gave me "certificate revoked" error when viewed in one browser/device but it displayed fine on others!
But everything is back to normal today! As if nothing happened!
I'm not a web dev, so I have no idea why this happened. I'm just pissed that I wasted 7 hours on a thing that wasn't my fault... -
The people who run these scheduling meetings need to remember that this building is just one big tinder box ready to go up in smoke. 30+ minutes talking about bull shit that only affects a small percentage of the team. AND we're behind and dealing with a push that happened on a Friday before the guy who wrote the code left for vacation to go to Tennessee to watch the eclipse for some reason.
-
I just listened to the devops at my new place recite a strategy that I recognised to be git flow. I surprisingly wasn't traumatised or suffer the ptsd I have at the sound or sight of SLACK and Microsoft teams, despite using them roughly within the same era
For some reason, the instructions for git flow now sound straightforward:
Pull from staging. Checkout to a fresh branch on your local. Push there. Once approved, merge to staging or send a pull request to staging
But slack and teams are an indication that the gig/position is going to hit the rocks soonest. Has happened more than once, it just makes me sick now. The beep of their notifications, their ui, their stupid rules and regulations why it doesn't work on the browser but want me to install their dumb apps on my phone (even if you use desktop mode)2 -
Maybe not the worst but the worst one I can remember for sure and it happened recently. I may or may not have spent 4 hours with another developer working out why my script didn't work.. to realise that I had swapped the underscore in a method name for a period. No wonder everything came back undefined when I was dotting into a method that didn't exist 🤦🏻♀️ my only highlight was that the more experienced dev was there with me and he also couldn't find it for all that time lmao. I did briefly contemplate calling my University and asking them to just take my diploma back, I don't deserve it lmfao2

Somewhat new to Linux and tried to install it on my usb so I don't affect my computer. Installed and an error saying could not install bootloader and booting from that usb just shows a blinking cursor and trying to boot back to Windows shows grub rescue as it doesn't recognise something. Might have to experiment with changing from legacy BIOS to UEFI. But I just hope nothing has happened to my windows4

Flyway is bullshit. Genuinely who the FUCK finds this useful??? Why the Fuck do you want to have an ORM, next to a custom jdbc and to top it all off you also write custom sql queries in flyway just so you can prove your colleagues what db migrations happened WTF you can see that on git commits dumbass!!!! 3 different sql models that need to be the same but are written differently each. One through ORM, through code and through raw sql queries. Flyway just makes shit harder and having 1 change in model means i need to fuck myself with rewriting raw SQL queries in flyway WASTE OF TIME8

You know that moment when you write a long code, then you undo many times to see something that was before, and when you "ctrl+y".......
Just happened
😒5 -
You know all those times when you neglected to put anything in those catch blocks?
If this hasn't happened yet, just wait. Soon enough some lunatic's nondeterministic code will randomly break you will have to spend hours figuring out why because you never did anything with that error.
Of course, actually writing code for every mandatory catch block is even more of a waste of time, so empty catch blocks it is!1 -
🚿 Mobile dev shower thoughts:
The regular "paid apps" are just IAPs that happened within the "AppStore" app. 🤔6 -
Developer 1: You know what they say, programming is just like sex.
Developer 2: Wait, what? I've never heard that before.
Developer 1: Yeah, you spend all your time trying to fix things that should never have happened in the first place.8 -
It finally happened. They just kept pushing, and pushing, and pushing. Asking for more and more features in an app that was a hard-coded demo from the beginning. Well it's all coming down now.
That database that was added in, missing half the API.
New features, broken.
Old features, broken.
Buttons, missing.
Drivers, need updating.
Yee, haw.
I tried to tell them, I really did. That maybe we should stop asking the client what they want, and instead sell them what we have. Well, now we have nothing.3 -
I don't want to spend a whole day tracking a crash back through multiple systems just to find a buffer that was initialised with garbage, wasn't written into completely, and as a result just *happened* to contain an exact value that causes a crash later on. If you're doing weird low-level things in C/C++, ZERO-INITIALISE YOUR DAMN BUFFERS.

So I finally got a rant to tell, about me myself and I. Were working on my web host (personal gladly) and was trying to get ACME working without root access. I messed up and somehow got a folder named “~”, in a directory. I thought “well that folder is unnecessary” and I ran “rm -rf ~”. The moment I pressed “enter”, I realized what could’ve happened, and it did happen. My whole web-root gone. No backups. Just a big facepalm on my forehead ...
Take lesson, fix backups...4 -
Let's say you are just diplomed and got hired in a small dev company.
Let's say the company is eventually really boring, and it mainly devs with Drupal (see my profile to get my opinion about this CMS).
Let's say you leave, find a bigass society, they accept your desired pay per month, and tell you that, no, there won't be any Drupal in your future work.
Let's say that you come on monday and the first thing people ask you is to check you Drupal level, because you're going to be needed a in future projects.
What would you do?
This happened to someone who joined us this week, the dude who hired him (and no it's not a recruiter (almost sadly)) sweared him that wouldn't use Drupal, and it's been a week and he did only that. Should he just GTFO?7 -
I need help,
I'm on that task for a month and it's a shitty task where I need to write algorithms too complicated for my level and I'm totally demotivated right now... I can't even understand my own code and can't focus for more than 5min... I just wanna go home and never see that code and work on that anymore...
Has this situation ever happened to you ? What should I do ?6 -
I just got directly offered to work as a front end tech lead in a company that is partner with Atlassian, but I'm kinda confused because I don't meet the requirements for the job (such as 8 years of experience as a dev). Has this ever happened to you?4

I don't know what but our customers have put new terms in our contacts. That essentially make us liable if we don't take certain measure to protect the access to stuff.
To me that means I have to log out of my computer whenever I leave my seat. I was told its not necessary if I go to toilet. So I set the computer to require login after 15 min of not doing shit. Usually I remember that and log out manually so that's just precautions measure.
Today before I got lunch, I forgot. And my boss happened to notice my computer was on within that 15 min after I left.
I got a warning.
Fuck this shit. I now set th timer to 1 min.
Now I need to login again and again if I'm reading docs or article.
Fucking shit.2 -

Anybody know how to disable this?:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...
I just updated from 1803 to 1903. I normally connect this computer to an "offline" network. In 1803 it just worked normally and nothing happened when I connected to this network. Now in 1903 as soon as I log into the computer it pops up a browser window saying I am not connected to the internet. According to that link it should have been doing this in 1803, but it was not. Anybody know of a way to disable browser popping up reminding me there is no internet on my network?
Edit: Windows 10 BTW, for posterity.7 -
Anybody watch the "Electric Dreams" episode called "Safe and Sound"?
This makes me think this is where we will end up with tech companies altering searches/websites for the individual. Making people believe things that are not true by representing false narratives. The actions of these individuals will reinforce narratives presented to the masses. There is already people finding that search engines and social media can sway elections by several percentage points. It seems like someone could use that same tech to target someone and turn them into a <fill in the blank here>. Urging them to some action. The rest of the world is like "WTF just happened?".
This is not a world I want.2 -
Gitlab issues and their mile long conversations are driving my crazy.
I just wanted to find out if a fcking feature exists. Oh, there is a ticket ... ah cool opened 4 years ago ... still unresolved?!
Thats fine, maybe they are planing shit. But no, their discussion lasts for freaking years. And than it just gets lost or fcking closed. I mean what the hack?!
Sometimes even paying customers are getting freaking ignored or like ... ugh might be a cool feature, but plz fck off ...
That happened to me so many freaking times. Its driving me crazy!4 -
Wow, just fucking wow, you did it again Microsoft. You know the default mail app that comes with 8.1? It just randomly downloaded a pdf of a spam mail that it DELETED BY ITSELF before. Wow... "Hey, that looks fishy. Probably a trojan. LETS DOWNLOAD IT". I haven't even opened it. I was on my Desktop when it happened. Immediately deleted that crap.
That's actually the first time in the 3 years i have my pc that my antivirus was needed and it's not even my fault. -
Just wrote a routine that sent 77 emails (instead of one) to the CEO of a company we are working. Needless to say what happened after.1
-
I think whether this is even a project that should be done NOW
or if there's some critical dependency that some monkey just happened to have forgotten to tell me... -
When someone else breaks the development build, and when I ask what happened, it's suggested that *I* should fix it, by "just" doing such-and-such.
Why me? I'm not the one who broke the fuckin thing. Can ppl take responsibility for their own actions please?1 -
How many times have u told a company that you will not be moving forward with the interview process bc you accepted an offer... only to have them send you a rejection letter 45 mins later??? 😂😂😂 Happened to me yesterday.
Told 3 companies that.
I didn't really expect them to respond, just wanted to let them know.
First company: No response.
Second company: Wished me well and thanked me for the update.
Third company: Sent me a rejection letter.
I'm like, "You guys just couldn't resist, huh?" 😂5 -
F-word with three consecutive U-letters! SQL Management Studio just crashed, just when I had finished a nice script, that I hadn't of course saved yet. I must say SQL Management Studio hardly ever crashes, can't even remember the last time that happened before this. Wonder if it has anything to do with the plugin SQL Complete that I installed just recently? SQL Complete also has the annoying habit of displaying a popup every time SQL Management Studio is started, with a delay just long enough so you have already got started with something when you're interrupted by that popup. No, I'm not going to upgrade a piece of software that behaves maliciously!15

I just wrote pure garbage for the last two hours hoping that if I crank it out fast enough it will have been worth it.
You already know what happened next.2 -
i think 2022 is gonna be the worst year ever judging by the omnicron and i think there will be more covid varients, and they will be more dangerous. the vaccine could just not work in response to the variant and millions of people could die because of that.
it could be a good year, but i don't really agree with that. and judging by the past two years, it doesn't look so good because of what happened in the last two years.
(blm riots, covid, india running out of oxygen for its hospitals, january sixth, etc)
but maybe, just maybe its good, but i don't really know.3 -
Hello devRant, my old friend....
It's been a while since i've last checked devRant and I am sure a lot of stuff happened since then. Anyway I am back and I might vent some anger on my job soon (yes, I know I originally said that everything is perfect but it seems as if I just was naive enough to think it was)3 -
So after 8 months of stopping the development of a web app, the client decided to start pushing it for usage.
8 months ago I was almost begging him to do some testing, so I could gather some feedback and fix any issues. That, of course, never happened.
Yesterday just before leaving work I received a meeting invitation and an e-mail. Apparently the app wasn't at the "expected level given its development time". I also got another e-mail with change requests.
Someone will be getting some virtual middle fingers during the meeting... -
So I’m trying to implement a new feature on a web platform.
Getting constantly a new error which is good cause that means that slowly I am progressing.
And then I refresh click the button to test and then the whole top bar of the app moves back and forth like its dancing macarena for like 5 seconds. I was legit confused what just happened that. Tried to repeat it and figure out how is there animations in my code, but there’s nothing. Either I’m burned out or I’m going crazy.
Still deciding.2 -
My computer after installing Solus has some pretty weird behavior.
It is with the keyboard and the mouse. The keyboard often writes the highlighted part, which is super annoying, because I have this habit of using the highlighted feature as a scrollbar, so if I am using this feature to scroll in the terminal, when I am editing, the keyboard will paste the content of the highlighted text when I am typing randomly, which is why I have to highlight a space, and also why I have to put my cursor to where I am typing to prevent it from randomly teleporting. And the mouse often left click / right click randomly, and sometimes the cursor has a seizure.
This is not something that happens to me recently. It has been happened to me when I was using Manjaro (which was way long ago), and at that time only the seizure cursor is happened. Now more stuff happened, and they are happening more frequently than ever.
The Internet on my computer is also terrible today, I cannot access to any website on the browser (Until now). I first thought that it's my browser (Brave)'s fault and I tried on Firefox, also not working. I tried to reconnect to the Wi-Fi, reboot the computer, nothing worked. Then I think of switching between Wi-Fis, because it's a strat that worked with my phone, and surprisingly, it worked!
(I really don't know what to end this rant, so I will just put this text here as a way to end the rant.) -
This had just happened, I was trying to increase the default timeout of an nginx running in a container for a proxy pass and always got a 504-gateway timeout response. I was setting proxy_connect_timeout, proxy_send_timeout, proxy_read_timeout, send_timeout, keepalive_timeout, etc. and nothing worked, after two hours of adding and removing lines of configuration (and waiting 1 minute for every time I tried a request), then I realized I have a local nginx for redirect server names to local ports (the container), that nginx was the one that actually responds with the 504 error, after that I tried a request with the port of the container ALL WORKED!!!!

Thank you hoogle for synching all of those images for that html book with you "fotos" app without notifications like every other picture you can find up there. I just discovered this and it apparently happened 3 years ago.4

Here's a shorter version of my earlier question in case it was way too long and wordy. It's informal research.
Have you experienced a scenario in which you did not feel accountable (or felt less accountable) for the outcome of some development work you did because of bad decisions that were forced upon you?
I'm interested in any specifics, including how you felt about it. Or even just, "Yes, that's happened to me."
The key detail is that in this situation you felt the person who made the decision was or should be accountable, and that you were not accountable or less accountable.
Thanks -

What keyboard macros do you guys use when you have programmable function keys?
Also a funny little story that I just remembered. My brother used to have a key that would type his password cause he was THAT fucking lazy. He was writing an NPC for a private Ragnarok Online server that I was testing with a couple people. Apparently he had hit that function key in the middle of an announcement command.
So basically, everything went as planned, but then while announcing an event, it would announce his password to THE ENTIRE SERVER. Lucky for him, there were only three of us online at the time, and we told him as soon as it happened.2 -
I just spent the last half-hour fishing a bug that happened to be caused by excessive react code lately. 😭😭😭
I wrote onSubmit in a vanilla JS file rather than onSubmit😭😭😭😭6 -
I have to integrate Branch.io journeys to a React PWA. Just started reading the docs and got a basic idea.
Just confused about how shall I add the web SDK in the React way.
Also, any explanations, tips, things-I-should-beware about branch?
[that is, if anyone's happened to have heared of it] -
A weird thing happened when I tried to install linux mint on my PC.
Although I installed it on a hard drive (I have another hard drive for windows), my bios tells me that Linux would be on the same hard drive as Windows?? I can assure that it's not the case, as I plugged out the linux drive and grub couldn't boot Linux anymore, just windows. Plug back in, linux bootable. Ok fine?
When I installed linux I panicked for a moment, as I thought I had it correctly installed separately, instead it would have become a dual boot, according to the bios?6 -
don't you just love it when you have to fix a system that consists on unnecessary junk code, horrible/lack of indentation, no documentation and the clients says "I don't know what happened fix it and I'll post you good"
I mean, I live for this shit man! -
It happened again. I wanted to purchase an in-app upgrade for the first time in my life and the button was bugged. Then just say that you are tired of your job and you wanna see your company fail
-
I believe everything has a solution. It's just not visible at the time. So I just leave that part and go home ( or work on something else if I feel like it ). It never happened that some kind of solution didn't come to my mind when I'm thinking afresh.

If they unfucked themselves they might stop and realize the supposed enemy they just despise so much was the only one that despised whay happened to them when they were young before they became parodies of the monsters that did said things

I thought you had to be great in the computer fields before your friends started asking to make their idea games. Just happened to me this morning.
Friend: Hey let's make an MMORPG!
Me: Bro that would take years...
F: Hmmm... fine then just an RPG.
M: *in my head* cuz that really changes things, it's still an RPG...
M: Lemme hear your idea
F: *proceeds to describe Fallout /but better/
F: And I'm willing to learn game design an hour or two a day
Idk how to make him realize that it takes money, time and more than two people!! -
Question about GIT regarding intellij idea. I have a local branch develop and I perform a git fetch via GUI. I see develop gets a blue arrow meaning that there are some remote changes that happened. In the past I would just click on that branch and click update, but I noticed that sometimes fetched commits from remote get applied to my branch in a weird way, for example they get merged. Later when I want to make an MR I get duplicate commits because git doesnt recognize that my branch has these changes already.
Right now I just delete that develop branch and check it out again, to make sure I'm working on a proper develop.
Wondering if there is a better way of doing this instead of deleting develop branch and checking it out again each time?5 -
Tell you what happened to me last time. I went to this fucking job and it lasted the length of orientation just because they're assholes. Just like the assholes.modfied my work schedule by half and hour so I have to leave an hour earlier. Mother fuckers. Give me my goddamn earlier items back and go to hell early !
Imma make things out of them that they sell and feed orphans with them ! Oh and haha exactly 360 rants this morning ! -
I got invited to a quinceanera by someone that happened to be on the same night as homecoming. They did all the traditional stuff. They had some sparkling cider that may or may not have been spiked and I had a lot of it. I learned after that it might have been spiked. It was right before homecoming started when the traditional stuff was over and it would've just been kinda boring dancing for the next FOUR HOURS. My date and I decided we didn't want to stay for that long so we went to homecoming instead. It has better dancing and a mosh pit which is way more fun than just slow dancing. We met up with a group of friends there and had a ton of fun. Homecoming only went till 10 where the quince would've gone till midnight. Our group went out for ice cream and I got home at 11. It's almost midnight now. High school is awesome, ain't it?

So It's a really interesting thing that happened with me
I just became a Facebook developer a few days back and today I see that there's news that Facebook might get banned in India, and I'm like thinking there goes all my learning of chatbots.
I should probably put that on my resume😂 like "Recommend me to your rival company and watch their downfall" -
That second when you scan the stack trace, spot the line in error and just think to yourself "wtf just happened"

Python working non-deterministic on VSCode? That just happened ... somehow, wtf??
Getting a list from a method and comparing its last element with an int value. Always worked before like a charm, didn't change a thing. All of a sudden TypeError, cannot run anymore? Restart VSCode, run again, still not running ... ?? Retry and print the element, in case I've surprisingly actually been an idiot all along ... nope, value looks in print as expected. Continue execution, suddenly condition works again. WTF just happened??? Caching, python extension bug, anything like that to blame?1 -
ghub piece of shit
damn fucking shitty software. It happened to me in the past(like thrice times) that my mouse got randomly locked at the highest dpi until I uninstalled and reinstalled ghub... well it improved with the time and lately I haven't had that issue anymore, but hey today just for my daily stand up the mic decided to stop working out of the blue(headset is logitech too)... then fuck it didn't have time to troubleshoot that, made my way around using camera mic 🤪
Soon after I finished my meeting, decided to check on ghub to see if the software didn't detect the headset or whatnot... as soon as I tried to open it "ghub is updating", because of course, it can't tell you in any way that you should update it or your devices would not work until you open the goddamned software4 -
Today was the first time, that Git saved my ass.
I'm building an MS Access DB with fronted and apparently I fucked up while working on some FS stuff and corrupted the fronted-db.
Luckily, I sync my changes regularly to a git-repo so I just took my last backup and applied all changes that happened in between.
