A friend asked me to test a program he made
So i downloaded it, and i noticed that i crash when you try to minimize the window
After i tell him about the bug, he send me a new version, and said "I fixed it, it was pretty easy"
He just removed the minimize button
"to remove a bug, remove the feature"4 -
A group of ten top software engineers is sent to a class for aspiring managers. The teacher walks in and asks this question:
"You work for a software company which develops avionics (software that controls the instruments of an airplane). One day you are taking a business trip. As you get on the plane you see a plaque that says this plane is using a beta of the software your team developed. Who would get off?"
Nine developers raised their hands. The teacher looked at the tenth and asked, "Why would you stay on?"
The tenth said, "if my team wrote the software, the plane would not get off the ground, much less crash.4 -
This is the first time an IDE has apologized to me.
PS: Dev notes, crash reports etc are excluded. This is the IDE saying sorry I can't do it, no matter what.11 -
Hey everyone - I just wanted to update our Android users on the push notification crash that has been occurring.
The good news is the issue should be fixed in the update I just pushed out (should be available in the Google Play Store within a few hours). We apologize for the crashes and thank everyone for their patience.
I'm still looking in to what actually happened here. Our GCM library hasn't been updated in a while and all of a sudden a specific case started failing. I'll continue to look in to how that seemingly happened with no changes in the app. Some other users of the library started experiencing the same issue.26 -
Friend: "You are good with computers right?"
Me: "Yes...."
Friend: "Can you put an eye on my computer? Mint crash at every startup"
Me: (Oh Linux! For this time ok) "Yeah, show me"
My friend open the pc...
Pc: "KERNEL PAAAAANIC!"
Me: ".... WTF!?"
Friend: "Can you repair this?"
Me: (shit.)
That was a long day...
(My friend closed the lid without the drivers and then the pc from the standby did not wake up correctly)6 -
PM: Bro send me latest version of the app
Me: But I"m not finished with x feature and it will crash the app in its current situation
PM: No problem bro just want to test
*5 minutes later*
PM: Bro app is crashing when I do x
Inner Me: YOU PEACE OF SHIT I TOLD YOU IT WILL CRASH!
Actual Me: throw a ticket I'll handle it later.11 -
Write a small js function using setInterval to fire a request every second ... then copy paste the code 450 times (literally, not an exaggeration) into a massive file to create a load test script.
This load test script also had no means to gather metrics or test response times or anything useful. It was literally a “did the server crash” test.9 -
Alright, it's not perfect yet, only one post exists and the anonymous analytics are hardly working. Next to that I'm tired as fuck and need to go to bed so fuck it, here we go:
https://much-security.nl
There's not much yet, just one tiny post :)
I have no clue if it will work or crash but I think it'll handle well enough 😅
If you'd find any security issues, please don't exploit them, just report them and I'll take a look asap!
Thanks!44 -
Story about an obscure bug: https://twitter.com/mmalex/status/...
"We had a ‘fun’ one on LittleBigPlanet 1: 2 weeks to gold, a Japanese QA tester started reliably crashing the game by leaving it on over night. We could not repro. Like you, days of confirmation of identical environment, os, hardware, etc; each attempt took over 24h, plus time differences, and still no repro.
"Eventually we realised they had an eye toy plugged in, and set to record audio (that took 2 days of iterating) still no joy.
"Finally we noticed the crash was always around 4am. Why? What happened only in Japan at 4am? We begged to find out.
"Eventually the answer came: cleaners arrived. They were more thorough than our cleaners! One hour of vacuuming near the eye toy- white noise- caused the in game chat audio compression to leak a few bytes of memory (only with white noise). Long enough? Crash.
"Our final repro: radios tuned to noise, turned up, and we could reliably crash the game. Fix took 5 minutes after that. Oh, gamedev...."5 -
User: "it stopped working"
Me: "ok. Could you be more specific?"
User: "it just closed"
Me: "could you give me the stacktrace/error message?"
User: "no."
Me: "why?"
User: "can't find it"
With a long conversation and some frustrating debugging it turned out that, ironically enough, the crash reporter crashed...2 -

Nearly had a crash today driving home and almost had a heart attack. Apparently my car had the heart attack for me and started doing. A speaker test.
So I'm contemplating what just happened and my car's speakers start going BEEEEP BEEEP BOOOOOOOOOOOOP (Subwoofer).
Then the radio came on and switched to a Spanish station.
I looked it up, apparently I had entered diagnostic mode on the infotainment system when I was fiddling with the wheel buttons as a stress relief.
Long story short, the diagnostic mode informed me that my car runs Windows ME!
I would like a new car please, kthxbye.6 -

devRant Android users - if you are a user who can consistently reproduce a devRant app crash and wouldn't mind helping me please let me know. You can comment here or email me at david@devrant.io
I'm trying to get rid of a couple of remaining crashes that seem to be happening in the Android app but we've never really been able to reproduce any of them. Thanks!74 -
Dev created a new service for our application that opened SQL connections. The catch? They never closed said connections. How this passed QA/review I've no idea, but after a few minutes on Staging the service would crash with "connection pool overflow".
I raised a urgent defect, and the devs "fix"? To up the maxConnectionPool to Int.Max!! Argh!2 -
>give person jailed access to my server.
>person breaks out, and notifies me.
>i fix the hole
>three weeks later i decide hes trustworthy enough and the jail is causing too many problems so i give him unjailed access
>first thing he does is crash the system
albeit unintentionally, but seriously?1 -
"Almond, I thought you said the cause of the outage the other week was that our server crashed?"
"The Tomcat server crashed, yeah. Not the physical server." (And you won't give me the time or budget to spin up any kind of redundant one, but that's besides the point...)
"Ok, but I've spoken to ops and they say none of the servers have gone offline in the last month?"
"Yup, the physical server was fine, it was the Tomcat server running on it that crashed."
"...so the server didn't crash?"
"We're mixing terms here. There's two things that can be referred to as the server. One is the physical machine, and one is an application running on it. The physical machine was fine, but
the application running on it crashed."
"What?! It's a very simple question. Did the server crash, or didn't it?!"

My mom got cancer and passed away two years later. I had made several videos to document her life. All of that, plus photos and video of our family, lived on a backup drive that got dropped on the floor a few months after she passed away. Head crash that wasn’t discovered until it was turned on again and forever destroyed the platter. It was the largest set of photos and video I had of her. All forever gone.17

I have just concluded a post-mortem on one of my servers.
Cause of death: out of memory due to a tiny memory leak in a VPN service triggered by 66 different IPs brute-forcing the creds at the same time. Mostly from China, of course.
Dear bot writers: you made me put aside my spaghetti and write iptables rules. I hate iptables. And I love spaghetti. You should be ashamed of yourself! Did momma not teach you basic OpSec? Don't crash the target and never, ever, interrupt the sysadmin during dinner!6 -
When I was in college, I had some serious knob-heads in my class. They kept on asking where they could download free movies.
So I made a .bat file called "free movies". It had a nice icon and everything. And placed it on their desktops.
What did it do?
Kept spawning message boxes that read "do some math bitch" and opening new instances of the calculator.
It was too brilliant to see people watch their computers crash, and might I add, crash slowly, because these computers had tons of ram.
Never click on "free movies" kids.5 -

DEVs:" this bug is hazardous and needs to be fixed quickly! It could crash a productive system completely!"
CTO and DEV teamlead:" shut up! This big exists more than two years! No customer will ever klick this button!"

Customer:"so we clicked on this button and our system crashed! Can you help us quickly? We are losing money!!!"
CTO in the meeting:"who programmed this shit? Are you insane?"
Teamlead:"you are useless !!"5 -
(Senior level engineering course and our professor used to work for NASA. This can lead to some fun anecdotes during class.)
Professor: “Because the ends have such a small surface area, you can neglect them in your calculations.”
Student: "What would NASA do?"
Professor: *without missing a beat* “They'd probably use the wrong units and crash into Mars."2 -
So apparently due to an extremely talkative x input driver and an error in a certain app, I've been running an emergent keylogger on my computer for half a year. On every keypress event, the driver would call the app, the app would segfault, the driver would log the incident including the event to /var/log and then crash, and the app would restart the worker. I noticed this when I started wondering why /var/log is over 100GB in size.13

My worst dev experience in 2021 has been a PHP-based CMS developped by lobotomized, single-celled organisms incapable of coherent thoughts.
A CMS even worse than WorstPress.
200k lines of "code", no use of packages, multiple entrypoints, no namespacing, all dependencies loaded by "include" at random places and everything is dependent of every thing else... a complete mess.
One could call it the butterfly effect CMS. Adding a space could completely crash the application.
At this point I've almost developped terminal eye cancer...5 -

Sometimes I feel like a freak. So many rants are about things that just never seen to happen to me.
I've been using Windows 10 since release, never had an update while I was working.
I've never gotten a virus from an ad, abs don't use AdBlock.
I've never had a crash that lost my work, I save neurotically or the program automatically saved.
I've never had trouble with typing in any language, static or dynamic.
I've never had issues with semicolons, IDEs or compilers tell me the issue explicitly.
I guess I'm just weird or something :/15 -
I broke off a long term relationship recently and today I deleted the text conversation with my ex. With 13000 messages being deleted at once I managed to crash my texting app for a whole 10 minutes.5

Why would someone in the fucking year of 2018 use fucking IE and only IE?
People need to understand that the sole purpose of IE is to download chrome🤣😂
No matter the framework/language you use it is guaranteed to crash in IE.
It's gonna be a glorious day😂15 -
Today I fell down the rabbit hole.
I've been writing some automated tests which found an asymmetry in our algorithm which I think is caused by an off by 1 in even input dimensions.
Change input to odd dimensions, crash due to out of bounds exception.
Switch to debug mode to try to work out why we crash, failing asserts for default function arguments with no obvious reason beyond a helpful message saying they're unsupported.2 -
mysql server crashes every 18 days, no oom, no crash logs, no sigkill being sent (used auditd). so I figure it's a unknown corner case bug in mysql. now I use a cron job to restart the damn thing every week at 3am, not a problem anymore8

My project at work (an electron/angular desktop app) has an exceedingly rare bug that causes it to crash-to-desktop while loading. Nothing about the bug makes sense, and there's no way to catch or detect it until the next run, and it happens 100% of the time for affected users.
There have been six confirmed cases so far (out of 500k+ users), and nothing linking them together. None of the fixes discovered by those users have worked for other affected users.
The worst part?
I was the first of those cases. I inadvertently fixed it for myself and haven't been able to reproduce it since.
I'm stumped!19 -
Once a month I get a crash for the stupid PHP site I am in charge of because the guy who made the database made the primary key of a table a varchar. It is a number 99.9% of the time but the dumbass customer always enters one entry with a string cuz the dumbass db Dev let them. I emailed the dumbass Dev telling him he is stupid and he said it is part of their philosophy. I told him I still think he is stupid so he emailed my boss.
I emailed him again telling him he is stupid.6 -
There are 2 node js apps floating around the city...built by me for intranet apps used in a logistics company.

Freelance project I was working on was deployed. Without my knowledge. At 11pm. Their in-house "tech guy" thought that the preview build i gave them was good enough for deployment. Massive bug, broke their api endpoints.
Got a call at 2 in the morning, asking for a fix. I told them how it was their fault and the App they deployed had TESTING written right on the main screen.
They promised additional payment to get me to fix it asap.
Went through the commit history (thank goodness their tech guy knew git, fuck him for committing on production though) and the crash reports.
Removed three lines. All became right with the world again. 😎2 -
Thanks to @sain2424, we found a really weird bug in devRantron.
One of the user that commented on or upvoted his rant has deleted that account. So when the notification component was trying to fetch the user's avatar to show the notification, it was failling and causing the app to crash.
@Cyanite the bugs you reported is fixed as well. Please update 🙃 🙃3 -
I went to this conference to see what’s new in MSSQL 2019, kubernetes container on azure and see what Microsoft has done to embrace open source community.

And he goes ”this is awkward. “6 -
Expat issues of the month is that the HR is taking its sweet time, while I'm trying to find a house and probably need to provide employment certificate or some shit.
So basically, I'll arrive in a month and either be homeless, crash on a friend's at least an hour and half away by PT, or pay for hotel or airbnb.
... Heaven and hell, could you please work together on solving this, particularly the house issue? Because neither am I made of money nor my nerves can currently take this, specially with this upcoming surgery thing. 🙏5 -

I love GDB on CLI!
I'm using an OSS tool for multi-threaded testing stuff, and it's nice but segfaulted after 30 minutes.
I was too lazy to set up an IDE project and click through tons of stupid shit, so I just compiled the tool with debug symbols, fired up GDB on CLI, let it run until a crash, got a strack trace and quickly found the problem.
I sent a bug analysis to the author, plus a patch which got accepted, done.5 -

I hate UI design. When you code functionality, you either make a thing work or crash, efficient or unefficient, reliable or unreliable, maintainable or unmaintainable; but in UI design there's by no means an established way to make something look pretty and that pisses the crap out of me. You cand spend countless hours working in UI design, using the latest CSS libraries and frameworks, but at the end, any client can easily say it's crap no matter how cool anyone else think it looks. UI design sucks.2

I read this in stackoverflow today:
Welcome to every C/C++ programmers bestest friend: Undefined Behavior.
There is a lot that is not specified by the language standard, for a variety of reasons. This is one of them.
In general, whenever you encounter undefined behavior, anything might happen. The application may crash, it may freeze, it may eject your CD-ROM drive or make demons come out of your nose. It may format your harddrive or email all your porn to your grandmother.

10 PM (after a very busy working day), CTO calls me and tells me: "We decided to hand in the new version to [random client] one week earlier, so they can test it."
Me: "I don't think is a good idea, the app is still unstable, we started working in it yesterday, it *will* crash"
CTO: "Don't you worry, at least they know we are working on it"
20 minutes later
CTO: "WTF why did you make my app crash?! I can't send this to a client!"
Told you. That is why that code is on develop and not on master. -
A rant about pretentious people:
So last week I walk into college and I find that a new "Machine Learning Crash Course" is being offered by a senior. Now I'm a beginner in this domain, and know the just basic concepts and math behind it. Naturally, I was super curious about this and decided to talk the student who was supposed to teach the course.
I asked him where he learned from, and mentioned that I'm an interested beginner. He just replied, "YouTube".
Okaaaaayyy?
Now I'm suspicious of this guy, so I asked him if he's worked on any related projects I could look into, to which he replies, "Not yet, but I'm working on some".
Now I'm SUPER suspicious. A guy that's got no experience with the subject, yet is teaching others about it?
Get this, at this point he rudely asks me if I have anything else to say. So I asked him a super simple question: "Do you know what gradient descent is?". He replies "Uhh, no, but I've heard about it".
I lost it.
HOW DID THIS GUY MANAGE TO CONVINCE THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT AND SEVERAL OTHER PROFESSORS TO TEACH A MACHINE LEARNING CRASH COURSE?
People like him need to go away.

Empty your memory,
with a free(),

If you cast a pointer to an integer,

If you cast a pointer to a struct,
it becomes the struct.
The pointer can crash and can overflow.
Be a pointer my friend.1 -
Programmers nowadays have to...
… write 100%-covering unit tests;
… set up continuous integration, linters, hinters, style checkers, …;
… follow style guides for every language;
… meet impossible deadlines;
… meet impossible management/customer/end user expectations;
… read through terrible code others made;
… read through terrible documentation others made;
… make terrible documentation themselves;
… fight with the IDE;
… fight with the build tools;
… deal with unreproducible crash reports coming in from everywhere;
… debug code written at 2am (by themselves AND others);
…
…
…
… KNOW HOW TO PROGRAM.6 -

Employer uses IBM Software, which forces me to use Eclipse. I hate eclipse. Hate is a hard word. I'd never say, I really 'hate' a person. But eclipse, eclipse is what I hate. I can look at my smartwatch and see my heartrate rising, just thinking of how the fuck any developer on this crappy planet would ship that bullshit IDE. That saying, I'm totally fine with some bugs, using windows and so on, but eclipse... Is this a get-more-contributors strategy? Holy moly it really kills me. Hey, let's just open that maven Proj.. Oh, crash. Hey, let's install that "bug-free" version of the maven-integratio... Oh, crash. Let's do a global search over my worksp.. Oh, freezed. Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! How can this be legal? Is there anyone sucking professors cocks / vaginas to get them introduce that crap IDE to students?2

I love tools such as IntelliSense or Copilot, don't get me wrong!
But i still have a deep rooted fear that one day, developers will become so dependent on those luxuries, that we will become practically unable to write code on our own, without our cloud overlords blessings.
Until, you know.. the server for such a service will crash and no one will know how to fix it without its own help. *see Palpatine meme reference*15 -

Asked him and he says "sorry I must have deleted it"
... that's grounds for dismissal right? ... like ... seriously2 -
Literally the first rant I made when I joined devRant was about this very piece of advice.
Me: "The build in testing is broken, this is how we fix it"
PM: "They haven't noticed yet, work on the feature request"
https://devrant.io/rants/225727/...2 -
"Stop throwing errors in your library! They cause my app to crash"
Who amongst us hasn't hear of the popular maxim: "Fail late even after you know something is wrong, and then make sure the failure cascades over the whole app in mysterious ways"5 -
That moment when returning correct HTTP status codes from an API become a feature request 😒
For the meantime I will need to deal with endpoints returning status 200 for everything, and status 500 when the service crash. 🤦🏼♂️4 -
I had my first crash on Windows 10. It takes ten seconds for Microsoft to take the crash info but, 10 hours to update.6
-
Just wasted 2 hours of my life looking through my colleagues code because he decided to build it at the last moment, install it at customer, and then take the day off.
If he had just started the project he would have seen it crash.
I hate people who don't test their own shit2 -
That’s it I’m done with writing documents like Software Product Specifications and Software Requirements Documents and Software Architecture Documents, manuals, data sheets and more in MS word..
I’m doing it all form this point forward in LaTeX... I can stay in my editor, it works beautifully with version control because it’s just text... I can split it amung multiple files.. it looks damn sexy. I can focus on the content rather than being distracted by formatting and spelling issues and the rest of that shit.. ALSO.. it doesn’t crash or get corrupted.. well at-least I’ve never had a text editor crash or corrupt my files.
Idk why I didn’t learn latex sooner and do the switch.6 -
Aaaah ! So fuckin done with this Server error !
I am checking if a cookie is set in Php and if it is, I am redirecting user to some page, basically its a 'remember me' logic. But this fucking error comes in everytime my page redirects.
I have a similar logic to check if user is currently logged in the current session, and if he opens a new window and types the url(index.php) he is automatically logged in (obviously, duh !) and redirected,bt it dosent crash at that time!
Help 😥15 -
I dunno about coolest, but I did sort of cement my reputation as the "database guy" in my first job because of this.
My first job was with a group maintaining a series of websites. Because of the nature of the websites, every morning we had to pull the records from one database on one network, sneaker net the data to a database on another network, and import the data via custom data import function.
However, the live site would crash after 100 or so records were imported. The dba at the live site had to script out a custom data partitioning script to do his daily duties, but it definitely messed up his productivity.
Turns out, the custom mass import function had recycled the standard import function, which was only used to import 1 record at a time, and it never closed its database connections, because it never needed to. A one line fix to production code was delivered 6 months later (because that was our release cycle) and I came up with the temporary work around, which was basically removing the connection limit. It would still crash with the work around, but only with multiple days worth of data. So basically only on Monday. Also developed the test set for the import (15k+ records). -
when you only have 5 hours of public internet access and you spend 2 of them fighting with the network because the router's dhcp rules somehow manage to crash the dhcp service 100% of the time3

computers are really expensive around here, so I've been using the same laptop for 6 years. a couple months ago it perished (rip).
me and my bf got all new parts and made a reasonably priced pc. it's been the first in a really long time that i enjoyed using a computer lol. it's a huge difference in my mindset knowing things won't take 3 min to load and that it won't crash every 2 secs11 -

maybe finally tech bubble will crash again and we will back to pen and paper13 -
I'm the only one who after saying "nah, come on, I will backup it tomorrow, what could happen?", spends the day after by reinstalling Windows (after an awesome crash) and praying that the project he was working on for months is still there?1

Android flow I’ve found(fixed in android 8, working on 7.1.1):
To make app uninstallable by the normal user make the app device administrator, add “android.permission.SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW” to the manifest and make sure it’s not granted by the user.
Now when you try to uninstall the app, it tells you to disable it from device administrators but the device administrator disable dialog is System Window handled by the app itself and if the app has this permission but not granted, settings will crash with SecurityException leaving the app untouched.4 -
My boss just now: "In a 32 bit machine the memory limit is 1.6 GB. After that programs routinely crash."
What really happens IMO? He writes programs that crash when they reach 1.6 GB allocated and the architecture is 32 bit. But it's a limit of his software, not one of the OS.8 -
So, depression, yeah?
Two good days of work in a row, and on the third, I sleep late and think during sleep and throughout the night, wake up tired and feel shitty and feel a crash-burn in my feelings. (or whatever you want to call it. Burnt out? Tired? Exhausted? Lonely?) So now I have the rest the optimizing sql bullshit project and a paper to finish, plus I need to work more on the thesis. And ofc, work itself.
Everything feels so gloomy.
I know it gets better, but feeling shit doesn't help either.
Anyways, I'm fishing for attention this time so gimme your good vibes! 🙂4 -
This is the last time Microsoft! I'm getting my old Arch image out and removing you from my life forever! Never again will my linux distro randomly uninstall itself without telling me in the middle of implementing new components and crash my development server. Never again will I have to deal with an update that refuses to STFU and go away until I, ME NOT YOU MICROSOFT, decides it's a good time to run the update. No more lack of customization and poor support of common dev tools. I'M DONE WITH YOU, WE NEED TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE.2

If anyone has used the super Mario 64 online mod, it's extremely easy to crash all clients connected to any server. You have to send a chat message payload with a length greater than 256 characters. The clients do not do any bound checking and write the payload directly to super Mario 64 memory. This causes all clients connected to the game to crash. I will leave how to send a chat payload > 256 characters up to you. I've confirmed my method works!1

Seriously, why can't youtube devs get their crappy code together!! Got a BSoD after watching a certain YT video.... I think its outputting malformed video data that causes MS Edge to crash the whole system....
And this started happening after Creators Update....18 -
Managers don't understand that there will ALWAYS be bugs shipped to production, no matter how hard you try to prevent or test against them.
Devs: lol
inb4 any comments really, i've seen facebook, instagram, and all the 'big players' crash and have bugs multiple times before, so don't go around swinging your dick like your company's software has no known bugs (don't even get me started on the devrant mobile app) I'm just saying bugs are a fact of software8 -
"If you don't return something in the catch block it will crash"
Isn't it interesting how a sentence can be true yet so infuriatingly wrong.3 -
Chasing information for software crash from a user:
Dev: Are you getting warnings when you open the model?
User: Not when I open the model.
Dev: Huh what's weird, normally there's a warning that looks like this when you open it that looks like this *screenshot*
User: Oh, yes I got that warning2 -
What game engine would you recommend to an indie developer? The type who can't afford a fucking server to run the bloated and buggy unity editor but is actually a developer so isn't afraid of typing.
I've had enough of the improper sandboxing (will crash bc of game scripts), tempfile-based crash-unaware instance tracking (won't restart afterwards) and lack of UI scaling (seriously, that's like accessibility/retina support basics) that is the unity editor. If they had command line tools I'd use them happily.11 -
Good news: You never have to backup the data on your computer and mobile anymore. In case of a crash, you ask the Facebook to send us their copy.4

Me: "Can you get the user to send us a recent crash dump?"
(Support person forwards my email)
User: "The most recent ones are from November"
Support person: "It seems they haven't had any this month"
Me: (?????!!) "Which November?"
The eventual crash dump was datestamped with today's date. -
So note to self, when creating random IDs, maybe generating 1,000 digit long IDs constantly is the source of that massive ram spike and subsequent crash...3

In an encryption-module, I had a bug, that caused my PC to crash, every time I tried to encrypt something.
Turns out, the loop, that appends
0-Bytes to the string, to make it Block-Cipher compatible,
Had an logical-bug in its exit-condition, that caused it to run infinitely and allocate an infinite amount of memory. -
So, first: I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to code and love to think I know everything.
We had a group project at university and me being laid back but unknown to the other people, the "rest" of them was together with me in a group. We got to know each other and actually we were a pretty cool group. I guess "the rest" in a computer science course means you get the cool guys.^^
1/6 of us did ever code in C# and 2/6 even knows what an engine is and how unity works. I was in both sixths, got group leader somehow (if you'd know me from school. Omg. I was that one guy not knowing what went on, saying my two sentences at the presentation and took the B-.:D), so what to do to have a nice 2 weeks with them?
We did a crash course, I taught them some basics and everything.
The point is, i was hella nervous and i really get anxious if something is expected from me.
Long story short, I talked a whole week for 5-7 hours straight without real pauses and eating wayyy less a man should. Dude I was literally dead on my way home on friday evening. I felt like I would fall over any fucken second, i was all shakey, dizzy as hell, weird vision, everything. It felt like I was about to die on the spot.
I got home though, ate like 1/2 kilograms of pasta and felt myself coming back to life.:D
What to learn from this:
Keep the fuck calm, do pauses, drink and eat enough and don't rush all in for a fucken week without real rest..^^
It fucks you up and doesn't do anything good for your productivity.
We got an A btw, so in the end, all went good.(: -
Out of nowhere my Linux Mint crashed and I can only enter emergency mode. What the hell Mr. Torvalds?
Thank god my home folder is in a separated partition and all my data is on remote git but I am atill very annoyed since the crash was in middle of my tunnel blick.18 -
So I'm working our remote build/testing server, and all of a sudden my computer just turns off. No crash message, no error, just turned off. My co-worker tries to help troubleshoot the problem.
Nothing.
I take the computer downstairs to the hardware department. They plug it in and it starts no problems.
After it finishes updating, I take it back upstairs and plug it back in.
Nothing.
I suggest that it is the power cable, and my co-worker looks under his desk. Turns out he had kicked the switch on the surge protector. 😑1 -
Teacher : You don't have to enter quotation marks: it makes the website crash, I don't know why. We will add a message to warn you.
Me : Can i play with it ? :)2 -
TIL you can crash a Tomcat request processing if the app reads request bodies using a reader() and you feed it a json body with an innocent nbsp :) the whole request processing just goes *pooooft*
reminds me of an ios bug which could brick the phone if it received an sms with weird chars.
These lynch-pin-bugs where a single byte/char in the right place at the right time can tear things down, are so subtle and fascinate me for some reason :)3 -
Me: "there's a fatal crash in the build that has gone to testing, this is how we fix it"
Project lead: "they haven't noticed yet, add the feature the boss wants"
Next day, boss:"testing found a fatal crash this morning and couldn't do any testing because of it, how'd it get past you?!" -
i transferred shitload of code from one class to another, stackoverflowed something and copy pasted it because i have never seen that this needs to be written like that, hit run compile, open up my logs expecting a mass crash and possibly explosion. it worked on the first try2

Worked with a team of interns learning Swift. They had a really tight deadline, so they decided if they were not sure what the app should do if a nil showed up, they would just force unwrap and let it crash.

I decided to tweak my two years old-mild overclocking on my main/home pc, to get more juice out of it.
Started with small steps running benchmarks each time I upped the clock.
Didnt crash me once up until it crashed while windows was booting after restart.
I thought to myself, that's normal, now I just have to lower it a bit until I find the sweet spot.
After windows finished crash dumping, restarted, lowered clock from bios, and headed to boot windows.
Windows recovery came up to scan my installation, pretty normal after a bsod.
I was waiting for it to finish, thinking that ofc there is no error you silly windows, until the recovery said that it could not recognize the error.
Proceeding to boot normal windows via the correspndent button in the recovery, the recovery itself came up again scanning for errors. I waited again only for the same outcome, and restarted my pc.
Yeap the recovery again scanning for errors.
How the hell did my boot became corrupted after just a crash. I've been fighting since yesterday for hours to fix this shitty situation but to no avail. I really dont want to clean install...
I couldnt even sleep well last night thinking that I have to fix this after work today...
Fuck my life, fuck windows3 -
My JS app can crash IE11. Totally reproducable.
Had a fun debugging session to find out how this is triggered. Happens inside a deeply recursive call in a library I'm using which redraws the DOM.
Found a hacky workaround to avoid that as I see no real solution. It's not like I'm responsible for fixing IE. These are the days where I'm happy I'm mainly a backend dev...4 -
I've started at school, but thinking about it since I were a child (10/11 YO) thanks to Crash Bandicoot!!
Damn, I've loved that game! And since then, I've dreamed about becoming a"videogame programmer", then I've found out that developing it's funny too, so for the moment I develop every time I can, one day I'll do my course to become a gameDev :D3 -
Oracle, please get your crap together.
If you really wanted to make an amazing replacement for Java swing, you could have made the scene builder application for javafx not crash every 15 minutes on macOS. Seriously. I can't go more than a half hour without it freezing up and/or having the window disappear, never to open again. I get that it's a complicated program, but it's 10 YEARS OLD. It should have been stable by now.4 -
Ladies and gentlemen... It finally happened... I finally killed a Linux install!
Was stuck at 1024 x 768, installed NVIDIA drivers, crashed, restarted and ended up in an endless login screen loop and then boom, crash and is no longer recognised in Grub.
Don't know what I did seeing as the machine hasn't been on for 3 days ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Guess I'll have to do a reinstall when I have internet again!4 -
I'm never using the literal character version of null Terminator again. I just spent an hour debugging a crash. I used the /0 instead of \0 when I built the string. Are you fucking kidding me, why the fuck is /0 not highlighted by my ide, I mean fucking seriously. Numeric 0 literal for rest of my dayz1

Yesterday, my team had a react crash-course workshop.
It was like "you have to import a couple of libs, use 'em in different react elements you pull up and Tadaaaa! Magic is happening and your app works".
This workshop was the pinnacle of "intense".
I understood 60% of the stuff.
My team-mates about 15%.
So react is the front-end technology of choice after our architectural-team. The other teams have to use this the technology for their UIs.
This will be a lot of fun ^^1 -
Just ranting cause the devRant iOS app keeps crashing randomly when I open rants at times, after crash same rant opens fine.
A lot of “rant” on that sentence.28 -
What did you do the last 20 minutes?
I watched the timer on my browser slowly tick down as it downloads 550mb over a flimsy school wifi connection in the hopes that my constant watching helps it not time out or crash.2 -
Goodbye, imposter syndrome.
Today I patched a StackOverflowException bug (that I myself introduced a few months ago) which caused the prod application to crash the other day.
Now I truly feel like I belong! 😂2 -
The graphic cards supply is completely madness. Even after the crypto crash it is not possible to buy RTX cards at price any close to MSRP.
But today my jaw drop when I saw auction on popular online portal where some guy was selling a place in a queue in another store. The title was "Rights to buy RTX 3080" and for 400$ you could potentially buy a GPU for the price close to MSRP. I think this was too much and after a few hour the advert was took down.5 -
I really got in love with nodejs and shit. And to be honest, the whole async thing isn't that shitty either. I mean the performance itself seems to be whack af (see onoff benchmarks for reference) but your whole project is more responsive.
BUT FOR FUCKS SAKE THE ASYNC WRITE DOWN OF A SETTINGS FILE FOLLOWED BY SOME STUPID CRASH INDUCING MISTAKE I MADE MYSELF, LEADING TO THE WRITE FUCK UP AND ESSENTIALLY ERASE THE FUCKING CONTENTS OF THE DAMN SETTINGS FILE IS JUST LIKE SMEARING TOOTHPASTE ALL OVER MY FRIGGIN BALLSACK! -
That moment when you change a color property in the interface builder and Xcode decides to go batshit crazy then crash.1

It is 7:46PM...
I started debugging at 10:30AM...
.Net native making my app crash at startup... even before the logger can write anything...
Just now, I find out it is because of a 3rd party lib...
"Going crazy" can't even begin to describe today...
I really didn't need this shit today... just not today... -
Condemning my HP stream to server-tude
going to host a minecraft server on that one on the subwoofer - let's pray that my sick beats don't cause a crash

So I had a piece of software crash on me earlier today...
I think "No problem, this was built internally and I saw the source code somewhere around here. 👍"
Locate source code...6 folders ("Project--v1.0--stable-2012", "Project 1.0", "Project 2.0", and a few others like it). Took me 20 minutes just to figure out which folder was used to build the project/exe. Turns out, none of the above. 👎
Had these people never heard of source control before?! 😣1 -
So I have figured out that Microsoft loves Dungeons & Dragons.
Because there must be some mechanism in visual studio that uses some botched up version of the D&D rule set.
"user clicks a button, computer rolls dice, gets a 6, 6 means you are lucky".
"user clicks another button, Computer rolls dice again, gets a 10, now I crash".
Please remove this feature Microsoft, it is very hard for me to actually get anything done, not to mention getting it done before the deadline.4 -
Worst documentation? Unreal Engine 4's documentation on editor customization (custom panels/windows and whatnot). It might have improved in the last two years, but the last time I made a custom editor there was almost zero documentation on the matter and on their Slate UI framework. The little documentation that existed was very vague and had awful examples.
I don't remember very well, but I think it took me close to two weeks to get something very basic working. I had to read a LOT of C++ code filled with generics and macros to figure everything out, but after I did I enjoyed a lot working with that stuff.
I just don't know how I was able to do that, working with UE4 was a pain the butt every. single. day. Runtime error on the gameplay code? Too bad, the whole editor will crash and then take ~40s to reopen. It was crash after crash, ~1min of compilation time for any little change to the code, so so so so much frustration.
I do miss a those times a bit though, because even though it was hard, it felt good to feel competent, to know something complex reasonably well to the point I could help people on forums. Today I always feel I don't know enough about the languages/frameworks I use. It's kinda depressing, it takes a huge toll on my self confidence. But whatever, let's keep going, one day I'll get there :) -
Gah... Outlook just froze because it can't connect to the mail server.... While I was drafting a long email....
Hope it doesn't crash, hope it doesn't crash.... Please please please... -
Yesterday I had to register my new credit card with a national payment app (MobilePay) and it kept giving me error 32, which says "a technical error happened please try again"... Real fucking useful u peace of shit app 😠
Turns out, after a bit of research, that it will sometime crash if you language is not set to a european language. Guess what? I had mine set to English... English (US)... 😧
Like, what the fuck is that? Why would you check if a person might be from EU, be checking the language setting?
Get your shit together 😑3 -
Is it just my phone or does the devRant app like to crash when you spend more than a few minutes in another app? Also I don't get notifications anymore
If anyone has any reasoning behind why these happen (since sometime in August I believe), I'd really appreciate it.1 -
always free your pointers people.
what's worse is when you preach that to people and end up being the one who leaves dangling pointers everywhere
woop memory overflowed
woop woop system crashes and you dont know why
woop woop woop sometimes it doesnt crash and you dont know why2 -
I "hate" when apps like dribbble or devRant crash while I am staring / reading some interesting content - which is very far down on the infinite scroll path - and after the crash I have to scroll next few minutes to find it again. 😄6

Ugh. Those bad sector hard drives are pissing me off! I can't even install Windows 7 properly because some fucking bad sectors are on drive! COULD YOU FUCKING OMIT THEM, SO I CAN FINALLY INSTALL THE FUCKING WINDOWS ON MY MOM'S COWORKER'S COMPUTER AND FUCKING GO HOME!? I'm so pissed off! Now I have to fucking change the OS in hope that it will do the trick. AND GUESS WHAT!? It fucking won't work and the OS will crash more often! AAAARGH YOU SON OF A FEMALE DOG JUST OMIT THE FUCKING SECTORS! (╯°□°)╯︵┻━┻4

The more I investigate mobile development the more it becomes apparent to me that modern development is a *massive* pile of technical debt thats going to burst, crash, and burn one day, along with the entire industry.
If it takes a newbie more than ten minutes in your framework to add a fucking *button* and navigate to a new screen, then your framework is shit.10 -
The worst part of collecting crash reports is that the application crashes the whole system so the report won't be sent. Fml
-
I use console.log for debugging in JS, but I might try .alert as I feel that it could make me feel like a person tracking status of a rocket launch. You know, message appears saying "Stage 1 successfully completed. Ready to attempt connection to database. Good luck to you all." and if the program encounters an error it would say "It was a pleasure working with you all, gentlemen.", wait for 5 seconds and then crash.2
-
After listening to the deadmau5 plane crash story on h3h3 this exact thought play went on in my mind.
The universe wants to be uniform. Everything is the same, nothing reacts anymore.
Humans like the complete opposite. We like complexity and entropy. We create and we destroy.
But we are part of the universe.
So if you break this down into absolute math statements, they are contradicting.
So are we breaking the equasion?
Or are we part of the equasion?
...Are we the universe's self made antidote to itself?2 -
Hyper frustrated...lost all the code due to a system crash had to reinstall OS, did not create a backup, screwed as shit!!!
Now has to start coding from scratch...

How to impress PM:
1. Prepare a critical bug, that makes the frontend crash
2. Prepare a hotfix, that fixes the bug
3. Deploy bug on Friday afternoon
4. Wait until PM starts panicking
5. Deploy hotfix after 5 min
6. Get praise from PM5 -
1. start up my monitors, have one monitor streaming news while the other one is browsing devRant.

Whenever anyone asks me why I dislike C++ I'm just going to point to this current app I'm working. Had a unit test with an extern method declaration that had 7 or 8 different parameters. No big. Problem is that the ACTUAL definition of the method had 1 less parameter than the extern declaration. It worked perfectly fine in x86. Ported to x64, compiled fine, hard crash at runtime. Debugger not a super lot of help. Took me a couple days to figure that one out. Also I am broke so I can't even drink the pain away. Neat.
-
On a project that will crash and burn due to a badly projected date given to the business. I'm team lead and the Developement manager. I'm not sure how to save my career from this one. 22 years at this company and this may end my employment.
Can't change the date because the business has had it with deployment failures. Not enough time to do any of the technical debt and I'm not sure one if the issues has a solution.
Time to create a resume I guess. Been a really long time.
Let me know if you want a developer in Des Moines!2 -
I forgot the fricking ON clause for a important database query. While it didn't crash MY program or greatly effect the performance, I feel sorry for the API that had to deal with the idiotic results of this.
Especially that one request I just spotted, where I just got the answer "the query took too long". That one was like querying the table "females" for males.
Soo fricking sorry 😭😭😭3 -
Why is it so hard to explain to people that
The speed of time = 60 minutes / hour
I mean, I didn't come up with this shit!!! Come on
Also, in other annoyances of today:
VS code updated and ended with a crash, even tho it now says it's actually updated... Should I trust this bitch or not?!?! -
Well it's nothing I wrote myself but I don't know why it exists.
I currently work on a reasonably big LaTeX (markup/typesetting) project.
For what ever reason someone had the glorious idea to build a Compiler in Java to compile the LaTeX sources to PDF, so far so good.
The problem is that
1. Most people working on that project either use an editor with its own compiling functionality or
2. use the shell script in the same fucking directory
Of course the Compiler is also slower than both of the above and tends to crash.
Well at least it's not my time which went into there. -
Which one of you is it that works for Apple or Microsoft and writes the code that tells a computer to slow down, lose its internet connection, freeze, reboot, crash your browser, or generally respond to a request for a website with a friggin' spinning beach ball of death right at the moment of highest productivity or crisis?10

One of my college professor just reached out to me on Whatsapp and he told me that my college is conducting a short crash course on "Machine Learning" for students. He asked me if I could visit and take a session along with others. He also sent me an ad banner which my collage had designed for this purpose.
Soon after the chat, I just opened up Instagram and saw my privacy going for a huge toss 🤪😡!!6 -
In my early days of web development I was on the lookout for a good PHP IDE and stumbled upon Komodo IDE. Never in my life have I asked for a refund so fast. Crashed at the most random times, such as when opening files and folders. Even accessing the settings could cause it to crash. Besides that I found it slow af.3

I don’t know why/how, but some guy in my team put the node_modules folder on GitHub.
This person ran *npx create-react-app* and for whatever reason probably DELETED the .gitignore.
I had to fix it of course, and in the meanwhile I forgot to switch branches before changing everything, making git crash because switching branches with +4 million lines of code deleted was too much.
Why don't they let experienced front-end devs initialize projects? I don’t understand.8 -
Unity has a nice feature where if you search for an item in your hierarchy, it fades to white as if it just crashed.
Thanks for the heart attack, Unity! Maybe this serves as a reminder to save frequently because it *does* crash a lot.3 -
So, I turned on my old phone to transfer all my p̶o̶r̶n̶ photos, and it crashed from the notifications.
And I understand that it's an underpowered device and notifications aren't expected to come by the hundreds, but how terribly misdesigned must a pubsub system like Push be for the client to crash? -
Epiphany.....
After crash and burns all through FB, Twitter and Instagram, I've got to admit, the only place a dev can actually get any likes is devRant!1 -

fucking VS2017,
It takes like 1 minute to refresh stored procedures in the server explorer, It is so annoying especially if you need to constantly add new stored procedures.
and dont get me start on DBML at least once a week that shit fucking decided to crash VS2017.
Maybe I need to download more ram 🤔🤔🤔5 -
The other day I fucked up. I coded a safety measure that saves a file on crash, to keep data safe.
I added two lines of code before loading the file, and they crashed. There goes all my data.

Sometimes angular can be really damn annoying with it's "Error handling".
When just one component has an error (For example using an non-existent form-control) it'll not only crash the component like it should, but the entire app.
whyyyyy do you do this to me -
> Blue Prism just stopped working
And that's how 12 time-critical processes in production just went out of the window for no fucking reason other than the sheer malice of those beasts of burden who designed BP in the first place :)

I thought the Devrant app crash problem was fixed? Three times this morning I went to reply to a rant and then the app crashed. Can no longer find the rants and my brilliant contributions remain unrealized. ;)4

Total brain crash...
Was writing a word doc.
Got interrupted by a colleague
When i got back to the doc my brain instinctively told me: "You idiot, you can't write anything while debug is running"
Spent a whole 5 mins trying to find stop button... wait... this is word....
Is this a bug in my brain?1 -
I often dream that I discovered a rare edge case in reality that can lead to a crash if corrupted people create any object together. Corrupted state is infectious but due to caching and lazy copying strategies you mainly spread it to previous owners of items you infect. Also I can't edit the code to fix the issue because I'd have to recompile and our world is an in-memory artifact of the current execution.1

React native never fails to amuse me!
For fuck sake few seconds difference in time between development machine and my phone causes the app to crash on long tap!
The solution on their GitHub was to fix time difference between Android and mac 🤦🏼♂️
What... The.... FUCK!4 -
I dunno how this happened, but this browser in VisualWorks decided to crash for like no reason (it wasn't even running the app), and is impossible to close. At all. Like there is only one process.
Why, Smalltalk, why?4 -
Don't attempt to debug a crash on startup using visual studio remote debugger over team viewer vpn using the worlds worst German hotel internet connection.
If you do, get a drink while it takes 2 minutes for the debugger to break. -
There's a 3 Lane street and 2 self driving cars are in the middle Lane but heading for each other.
What do they do so they don't crash?
What if they can't brake?14 -
Learning C/C++ started to become fun, mainly because I've managed to do seemingly cursed stuff lately.
For example, today, I learned you could totally call a class member function using a type-matching nullptr variable. The 'this' variable is so null that it will crash as soon as the program hits 'this', though, but the control flow does go into the function.
It's not *that* cursed once you learn the behind-the-scene stuff, but that kind of weird s#!+ is funny, even amusing for me, who've mained languages other than C/C++.15 -
Dear Xcode,
You are a lovely IDE. Especially when an app crashes and the crash stops once I restart you. I am your friend forever.
Yours always,

Last month, I learnt Docker via the 1 hour crash course of the YouTube video.
Now, I don't remember all the content of that video which made me think that I should start making notes.
I understand the basic fundamentals of the Contanarization and a couple of commands.
But I still feel like I'm lacking the whole picture of the docker.
I wonder what other devs do to learn new tech and also about note taking habit for revisions.6 -
Don't you just love it when gitlab's ci pipelines crash for no apparent reason, causing tests which cannot fail to just magically break down, change logging levels to Just about anything and basically PMS for about 3 hours before it decides it needs to restart completely and when you return the same pipeline which you've been trying to fix for the better part of an entire evening, after regular work hours, it. Fucking. Works. With. No. Changes. To. The. Entire. FUCKING. System.

How to create an application using kivy.
- Install Kivy
- Open PyCharm and create your first application
- Follow the documentation
- Try to start the application
- The application crash for a arg that the run() method doesn't require
- Go to google to find the solution
- Don't find any solution
This is what I have done in the last 3 hours
Thanks Kivy3 -

So I got a new laptop today. (Not the one from a previous rant. I cancelled that one) Aaaaaannnndddd touch is completely fucked. On Windows it worked like 25% of the time, Mint doesnt work at all and Ubuntu works like 80% of the time. It feels like the panel gets disconnected at random but thats rather unlikely or the driver is fucked and locks up in a crash sometime. Man I really wish I had the time to dig deeper but I have other things on my plate rn.
Also the latency is kinda odd: Windows has the mouse more than a centimeter away from a moving pen and Ubuntu has it at roughly 3mm.3 -

added a sixth point to "core principles" of the os/language i'm designing:
6. hard crash on as many errors as possible because programmers are retarded pieces of shit and fuck them from both sides at once with three baseball bats in each hole at the same time. either fucking write your program right or go fucking fuck yourself you fucking lobotomized incompetent pieces of shit.
because fuck this fucking bullshit. your lobotomy will either make the whole system crash or you'll learn to not be lobotomized you fucking retarded pieces of shit.
oh, and the error message is gonna be "OH NO! THE CREATOR OF [program name] IS A RETARDED LOBOTOMIZED MORON WHO CAN'T WRITE CODE FOR SHIT, so now he fucked up your whole system by his utter incompetence... Restarting..."1 -
Advice to new devs: always check function return values. Crash as close to the reason as possible. Make your functions return errors whenever appropriate and check these as well, crashing gracefully.1

So we started to get build failures because the build server is full. Team leader asked the co-owner for more space. Got told we should just do less builds. Updates! (( ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ ))
Why do they break things..
After updating my system my VMs suddenly stopped working, all of them. They didn't crash or anthing but became unsuable, stuff like force logouts..
Almost lost it, but thankfully there was a difference in the snap version and the deb package..
At first that also didn't want to work, but it was just that the snap wasn't completely removed so it had some problems..
Now thankfully it *seems* to work again.

Finally an error I can understand with ease. Up until now, I’ve been getting these weird arbitrary errors that make no sense to me.
I tried to wake my MacBook and the thing hung. I have it some time, and it restarted, restored all windows, and let me know it was a “Sleep Wake Failure”.
Honestly I don’t mind getting an error occasionally. But when the error says “UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP” while I’m gaming on Windows, it annoys me.
Also having WebKit crash the webpage on me without telling me what happened also gets me mad.
TL;DR: Make understandable error messages.2 -
I hate it when things crash, but I also enjoy the sweet seconds where I can just watch YouTube at work because my computer is busy.

Guys. Guys. Guys.
I went to sleep last night, after hunting a bug the whole day that showed up towards the end of my simulations (after several hours of simulations) and that crashed my program.
The crash was due to a bounds error in a fixed size vector, that worked on all the other thousands of iterations but for some reason randomly crapped out late into the sim. So I gave up and went to sleep.
Booted up my program today, 10x speed gain and no bug. Please send help. My brain is playing games with me, I'm sure. This shouldn't happen. :(1 -
In an in-house beta our product was causing blue screens. We had some the crash reports and a I dug out the technical notes in how to decipher that gibberish. Still no real clue, but there was an address happened where it was supposed to happen. So I dumped our binary into two reversing tools, jumped to that address and looked at the surrounding code.
And sure there it was: A missing check when manipulating a C-string which could lead to out of bound access. Added a check BSOD's gone.1 -
Woke up early. Drank coffee and my mindset is so ready to do some work. After 30 minutes I'm so sleepy like a literal crash down and will sleep now. Body why you do this? I hate night shifts. It destroys my body clock. I hope weekends and mall hours are night shifts as well.
Also I hate company internal system project when I am assigned to a client and the client don't know that. I can't tell it to the client and my company can't tell also because my hours are 100% committed to the client. -

Am currently handling a very bad code, once you add any feature the app crash and you have to fix the whole POKER application ( as you know poker is a really complicated and everything related to each other). The app crash and every single line of code goes wrong. As well i do barely have a break and am working overtime and during the weekend.
In addition to all of this i have a very complicated design and animation to the chips. Adding to this am the only developer working on this project.
Summing-up am working 10 to 11 hours per day 7 days a week. And still the manager is dissing me as if am not a good developer.
I feel so bad, i cant describe how am currently feeling.
So guys do you believe handling a very bad code might reflect your coding skills ?3 -
Are any of you "cursed" with a particular set of software tools/programs?
Take me for example, I cannot use Adobe shit or it crashes. The same thing can be said for Microsoft Office. Anything in there, it does not matter. It always crashes on me. I continuously get the "Not responding" status. Regardless of operating system.
This has made me absolutely *despise* anything that is Microsoft Office or from Adobe. Now, I am sure you can all guess how and during what circumstances I would have to touch Microsoft stuff, work and the like.
But Adobe, mainly photoshop because it is what my designer uses for mockups and the sort. Dude has been constantly baffled when I show him me trying to open something only for it to crash. And we have made the experiment, in which two of my other employees would use MY COMPUTER to open something in Adobe and it would not crash on them. But the fucking moment I attempt to open anything in these two pieces of shit, guess what? it crashes.
I fkn hate Office and Adobe products6 -

OKAY, so swapping to a service that authenticates users makes the authentication part crash :/
Phew development slots ROLL BACK...
No the entire service was broken. Rolling back, all non authenticating controllers work, but the authentication never happens, so server is working, but the users cant use it. Fuck!
Delete everything. Recreate. The setting persists. WTF. Delete again, recreate, reinitialize, republish, it works as it should when tested phew.
Creating new service experiencing cant replicate. Hmm, okay must have been a glitch. Next, update, YEAH swap, no downtime!!!

Android Crash is Fucking Bullshit Ever on this Earth Planet.
I really Hate these Number of Versions and Bullshit Incompatibility between each one.
It is Just a Shit Developed on Java.
The Crash Really Fucks the eyes of Developer.
And Fucking Bullshit Errors are not Even visible, Sometimes the shit goes so worst that it does'nt even give the Line Number where error Exists.
Worst OS Developed for Mobile on This Planet.
Anyone getting into these development i suggest IONIC is Best to start instead of Coding Native Bullshit Android.
If anyone knows how to see the realtime errors besides Logcat and Firebase Error please let me know.11 -

When I wrote a templating engine (great overstatement) just for myself to learn, I had this bug in php5 and regex that would crash the whole apache server.

I crash and burn during coding interview questions. Every. Time.
I just do. It's terrible. It doesn't matter how much I tell myself to slow down and just think it through first before coding...I end up coding first after a short period of thinking about it. Don't get it right, freak out...and well I crash and burn.
It bums me out. The worst part is that I'm so distraught about it that I take a break, and sit down and solve it in like 10 minutes...of course it doesn't matter since it happens after the interview.
I just need to practice solving these things to get that mindset right.3 -
Unraid, you piece of lovely SHIT...

Hackerman strikes back. Always thought the new knowledge about stego tools, reversing, enumeration, privesc were just my private amusement. But could now use it, hopefully resolving a severe crash by dropping our binary into radare2 (cutter) and ghidra, identifying some dangerous code.
Also it gives you new angles to look at things. E.g. the vectors your code might expose...3 -
I was writing a random rant about something that happened to me this morning, and the app decide to crash a second before I could post it.

Galera is bloody incredible. We had 2 out of 3 nodes crash, and it still managed to recover automatically with no downtime.
But let me also say

@dfox is it a known issue to have crashes on iOS when visiting the notifications tab?
If not here’s what I can gather: When opening the notifications menu, app will crash after the devRant logo wobbles 3-4 times. After reopening the app and repeating the process about 3-5 times, the app will load into the notifications menu. However, when tapping on any individual notification, it will often crash after the same 3-4 wobbles of the devRant logo.
Now, I’m not a mobile developer (Nor a react developer, if you guys are using react) but here’s some things that I would think might cause this:
- An unhandled exception?
- If you use multiple server instances, they may be out of sync?
Not sure what it could be tbh. But I hope this helps, keep up the great work!7 -
Not really dev related but here it goes:
Decided to update some apps on my phone during lecture. Suddenly android crashes and is stuck in a bootloop. Went to safe mode where "downloaded" apps are disabled but wanted to at least be available via telegram. So I followed a guide to manually convert an app to a system app and tested with some random app that I didn't care for. That worked flawlessly and then decided to proceed with telegram but it said that moving failed but actually the folder was moved. I took the chance and rebooted (again to safe mode) only to find out that now the system ui crashes as soon as it loads, also rendering the safe mode useless.
Great that such things always happen when you don't have access to a trusted machine with adb installed. -

Since then i always test my request from local if they are okay before downloading a file from a server

Holy shit Realm. This DB.... On Android it will crash if you access a reference to the db from a different thread than the one it was created from! 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Why oh why can't they just have their own internals managing all the fucking thread they need? There's a reason they provide sync and async db access.
This basically means that my reference to a realm instance should always be tightly paired with the corresponding thread reference so that I can run my db queries on it.

Settle an argument for our development team. We have infrastructure to report crashes when they occur, via a simple online form submission. The form provides basic fields for a description and an email address, and also posts some basic telemetry (rebuilding what it can of call stack, variables etc). Currently the email address is optional (you can submit the form and leave it blank). The form is not mandatory (the user can hit 'send' to submit online, 'save' to save the crash report to transfer in other ways, or 'cancel' to just ignore it entirely (irregardless of their choice, depending on where the crash has occurred, they may be able to continue using the application or it might exit).
A suggestion has been put forward to make the email address mandatory. Surprisingly, this has kicked off an incredibly polarising debate, so I thought I would put it to devRant to see what is the consensus here.
I'm trying not to bias the discussion by stating with the considerations at play, but would encourage you to think about them before chiming in!4 -

I like the UWP idea, and in general how UWP look like.. But holy shit they suck.. It takes me fucking 2 minutes to open an UWP app it crashes at least once in those two minutes. And when I open them, its just a matter of time when it will crash.. Lets talk about Skype UWP, love the design, hate the perfomance. You know when Skype syncs? When I open it and wait a minute for it to be usable, and then it updates conversation.. Then.. And only then.. Whaf the fuck is wrong with it? The platform or developers? I fucking hope they improve with, and I don't think I'm the only one with this problem..2

I recoded a REST endpoint that transfers large amounts of data from our db using a streaming response so it doesn't crash the server...
Pretty easy... Mostly just needed someone that knew wtf it was or has a bit of curiosity and asks questions... rather than just keep on doing what everyone else is doing...
Who hasn't seen logs updating in near real time in TeamCity, Jenkins... for the last 5yrs+... No one else ever wondered how it's done?
So yes solving a production issue with old technology and being called a genius... I guess is pretty satisfying? -
Does anyone have any good crash courses in C++? I'm not looking to learn it to program in it, just to be able to read it. I want to use Qt in Python, but much of the documentation is missing or incomplete, so I'd like to be able to use the original C++ instead, but I can't understand have of the esoteric use of symbols.1

Motivation to work: 404 not found!
This project is going to crash, the client wants live but we have a broken ci/cd and the application is not even finished.1 -
Unity is the worst! Every single version of it has some kind of bug that prevents some piece of what I'm working on to be buggy. 5.3.4 seems the most stable, as far as the app working, but likes to crash on me several times a day on Mac OS. I'm really tired of this.

want to dispatch an action from clicking a button, but dispatch() doesn't exist
add @connect to make dispatch() exist
other stuff crashes because @connect is actually a macro for a wrapper instead of the decorator it pretends to be
get locked in stalemate because both features kind of need to not crash
