💩: "I must emphasize that I'm on a tight schedule. I need this done in 2 weeks."
😎: I cut some features and take the job.
As agreed, I send a progress report at the end of the week to get feedback.
💩: *nothing*
😎: He must be busy... I'll call him if he doesn't reply in a few days.
💩: *doesn't answer call*
😎: Time running out, still no feedback, I assume everything is fine and finish it a day before the deadline. Suddenly:
💩: "Hi, how's the project going?"
😎: "...good... WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN???"
💩: "Oh, I went on a quick vacation"
😎: *wants to die a quick and painless death*
"There's only like a day left..."

Little fun story
About 3 years ago, my woman came gome from picking up our son from kindergarten.
She told me that she met a very nice woman - also a mom - whose man is also a dev (He is a FullStackDev, while I mainly do backend in PHP) .
She said that she invited them over for BBQ the next day.
In my mind, I was like "Fuck, now I need to listen to some wanker explaining me how great it is to be doing full stack with all the latest and greatest tools and bells and whistles why I am the fat kid using PHP"...
The BBQ-day arrived, we have met, we have talked, and we have been best friends and brothers-from-another-mother ever since.
Life is good sometimes.5 -
I want Gordon Ramsey to start a IT program in the same fashion as Hotel Hell and Kitchen Nightmares
He'll sit at a desk with a laptop, examining code as if he's eating food, venting frustrations and screaming insults out loud
Then he'll have a talk with the team and see how they work on a day
After that he'll go into the freezer (server room) and scream at mold and cockroaches
Then comes the intervention where we discover that the PM is still grieving about the death of his original programming language and the team loves him but thinks he should move on
The next day the development studio is modernised and has a candy bar, tennis table and everyone is forced to use linux on their new macbooks
Then we experience a good day where everything is great and velocity is through the roof
Then Gordon leaves and everything is shit again17 -
//Long rant
[Boss man]: Hey, we need you to build us a web app.
[Me]: Okay, what do you need it to do?
[Boss man]: We need staff to be able to login from anywhere, create new appointments, check room availability, display live times for the rooms, schedule future appointments, record all the data as stats and export the stats to (email address).
[Me]: Okay, sounds useful, anything else?
[Boss man]: we also need it to send all relevant data to a calendar where certain staff will be notified by email of events.
[Me]: Okay... I'll get right on starting this.
[Boss man]: So you can have it done by the end of the day? (4 hours from this time)
[Me]: *Internal screaming* *WHAT THE FUCK* Uhm, no, I don't think that is possible to complete in a four hour period by myself.
[Boss man]: Okay, well by tomorrow then, I'm leaving for the day though, have a good one.
[Me]....

New job (first CS job).
Day 1: Install Ubuntu
Day 2: Dev said "it was so cute when he asked if he could uninstall windows." Also, first pair programming with engineer of 12 years. First commit (he did all the work, I just tried keeping up."
Day 3: "Here, try this bug " nearly get there. Have to leave early. Team event (Group VR experience, was wicked fun with drinks afterwards. Turns out boss man is a total bad ass. Swam with sharks and giant Wales)
Day 4: Fix bug. Notice odd behaviour. Fix that too. (All on my own). Code review: "This, that but works and is good." Get asked if I want to go to customer to do A, B and C. Tell Boss I only know B. He said "Tell me what you need for A and C."
I'm so God damn happy.8 -
Wife : School tooday ?
Me: Nop... Remote working ! 😎😁
Love programming
Wife : But how people know you working.
Me : git commit -a -m "im working on it" && git push
Wife : ohh never mind have a good day !
Me : you too17 -
Manager: You know you did good this week, take the entire day off tomorrow
Dev: Really?
Manager: Yeah my treat.
Dev: Can you send that to me in an email?
Manager: ….I mean yeah, but I don’t see why that is necessary
*** About halfway through The next day
Manager: WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?! YOU HAVEN’T COMPLETED A SINGLE TICKET TODAY OR REVIEWED A SINGLE PR OR EVEN SO MUCH AS ATTENDED THE STANDUP. EXPLAIN YOURSELF!
Dev: You said I could take the day off today?
Manager: YEAH BUT YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO ACTUALLY TAKE IT OFF!! I WAS GIVING YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW DEDICATION TO THE COMPANY BY COMING IN ANYWAY BUT NO YOU THOUGHT YOU’D JUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR GENEROSITY AND HAVE AN ENTIRE DAY TO YOURSELF?! GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS, THERE ARE URGENT TICKETS ON THE BOARD!
Dev: …15 -
I finally got it working! Now I have a foundation for a kernel and an uefi bootloader written in pure Rust
Today was a good day :)22 -
Me: So i've cloned the iOS project, i've run carthage, but it won't build.. Have I done something wrong?
Devs: Oh read this doc on github, we do loads of custom stuff. The depenedncy manager can't do it all by itself. You need to run `./scripts/boostrap.sh`
Me (another day): I've switched branches and i'm getting all these errors. Any ideas?
Devs: Ah this happens when someone modifies xyz. Read this pinned slack message. Run `./scripts/bootstrap.sh` again.
Me (another day): I've switched branches again, getting different errors, re-running boostrap didn't fix it.
Devs: Ah yeah, this happens when someone modifies abc. You need to run `./scripts/nuke.sh` and then boostrap when this happens.
Me (another day): Guys When I try to run the prod app its not building any ideas?
Devs: Ah yes have a look at this confluence link. You need to run `./scripts/setup_debug_release.sh`, then nuke, then boostrap and you'll be good.
Me: .... ok
Devs: Oh btw very important! do not commit any changes from `./scripts/setup_debug_release.sh`. It will break everything!
Me: ... no i'm sorry we have a much bigger problem than that. We need to talk ... like right now7 -
Recruiter emailed me later this day. (had my first job interview today for a Linux Support Engineer position).

Another incident which made a Security Researcher cry 😭😭😭
[ NOTE : Check my profile for older incident ]
-----------------------------------------------------------
I was invited by a fellow friend to a newly built Cyber Security firm , I didn't asked for any work issues as it was my friend who asked me to go there . Let's call it X for now . It was a good day , overcast weather , cloudy sky , everything was nice before I entered the company . And the conversation is as follows :
Fella - Hey! Nice to see you with us .
Me - Thanks! Where to? *Asking for my work area*
Fella - Right behind me .
Me - Good thing :)
Fella - So , the set-up is good to go I suppose .
Me - Yeah :)
*I'm in my cabin and what I can see is a Windows VM inside Ubuntu 12.4*
*Fast forward to 1 hour and now I'm at the cafeteria with the Fella*
Fella - Hey! Sup? How was the day?
Me - Fine *in a bit confused voice*
Fella - What happened mate , you good with the work?
Me - Yeah but why you've got Windows inside Ubuntu , I mean what's the use of Ubuntu when I have to work on Windows?
Fella - Do you know Linux is safe from Malwares?
Me - Yeah
Fella - That's why we are using Windows on VM inside Linux .
Me - For what?
Fella - To keep Windows safe from Malwares as in our company , we can't afford any data loss!
Me - 😵 *A big face palm which went through my head and hit another guy , made me a bit unconscious*
I ran for my life as soon as possible , in future I'm never gonna work for anyone before asking their preferences .7 -
• Good night’s sleep (8-9 hours)
• Clearly defined requirements.
• A fun challenge to solve.
• An idea of how to begin.
• Music! Something fast paced and/or harsh. I find soft tunes, good lyrics, etc. are usually very distracting.
• Deadlines help, too, even if they make me stressed out and work too much.
• No political BS / hateful and intolerant political comments from my coworkers within the past day or two, as being called a horrible, racist nazi by association absolutely kills my desire to do any work for them. Going two days without something like this happening is exceedingly rare.
• Being left alone, *especially* in the morning before work! The more distractions, the harder it is focus, even if i have peace and quiet later on.7 -
Woke up early. Feel great. Even office coffee tastes great. Today is going to be a good day.
Lead QA: - Hey I'm fixing some stuff in production, and now I can't reach it. Do you have the same problem?
TODAY IS A GOOD DAY, GO FIX YOUR OWN PROBLEM CUNT.
COFFEE TASTES FUCKING GREAT.2 -
I was starting a new job and asked if developers had a choice between a PC, Linux or a Mac. I didn't get a response so I sent an e-mail saying I'd prefer a PC/Linux if that was allowed, or a PC/Windows. First day I get a Mac. Boss says something about how you have to have a Mac to develop on; the company doesn't have good Windows laptops with 16GB of ram.
I really do not like macOS. I wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that for the past three jobs, I have always been able to use a Linux machine at work (since 2012). So over the weekend I got it dual booting. It was not easy. Apple's hardware is fucking awful. The keyboard, mouse and bluetooth are all connected to the serial bus.
I got it all working though, at least well enough for my job. It feels so good to have a tiling window manager. (I know Mac does have some now, but I really love i3). I made a guide in case another developer finds themselves in my spot:

Last teacher rant from me and this one is about: my mentor.
Let's call him Bob.
He was a person who'd always be ready to help you out, did some lessons on bullying and the effects of it, stood by me many times when I'd have hard times with something I'd trouble and one of the most important things, he had a very good sense of humor!
Also, since I always wore a suit (still do), he introduced 'FaF' day, aka, Fancy as Fuck day. Every Wednesday the guys who wanted to would come in suits.
Yup, he got me through loads of stuff, miss that guy :)7 -

We keep ranting about managers, here is something good about mine. He increased my salary a 100% of my current. Which is freaking awesome.
That's all have a good day. ☺️6 -
I hired a new developer after careful screening and interviewing many candidates.
First thing he's asking first day on the job
- I have already booked august month for holiday, is that a problem?
- I need to come 2 hours before anyone else in the morning and leave 2 hours before, everyday because I have things to do at home.
- I've seen that espn.com sport news are blocked by the firewall, why is that?
- I've installed bitTorrent on my PC but it's very slow downloading movies
I hope he's good.20 -
***Interviewing potential sys admins so us devs don't have to build everything and run everything***
Coworker: Do you know how to use cron and cron jobs?
Candidate: Yes I'm familiar with setting up users and permissions.
Me: 😳
Coworker: 😳
Boss: We will give you a call have a good day.
If you had just admitted you didn't know but we thought you could learn we might have been open to teaching you but brazenly acting like you know something when you don't is dangerous if you're running a multi thousand user production system.3 -
A recruiter called today.
A new job proposal. Higher salary, manage some 5 men team, DevOps buzzwords, cool product, great conditions but then she says "and we're working only in Windows environment".
My ears ringed "only in windows env".. "only windows"... "windooowwssss".
"Nope, thanks, have a good day!" - hung up.18 -

I'm a developer in germany and of course, everyone in this company has a keyboard with the QWERTZ layout, which ( you all know ) sucks especially when using it do write code.
So i asked my boss, if i can get a keyboard in QWERTY layout, because of the given reasons.
He replied nicely: Yes, I will ask the hardware management.
5 minutes later i got a mail: Here is your harware order, you will get it soon.
It's not much, but that was fast and nice :)
Have a good day everybody.28 -
Today was bad day.
- only had 3 hours of sleep
- 1.5h exam in the morning
- work in the afternoon until 8pm
- 1 drive crashed in a RAID5 array
- wasted hours of data copying
- my hands and arms got really dirty from all that nasty trump-face-colored dust in the server room
- nothing new in the west
- I have to get up in 4 hours again to start a new copying task
- I only knew it was friday today because the devRant meme game was reaching the weekly peak
- lists can save lives
- good night 😴2 -
Picked this up the other day. Hope it's as good as people have been telling me.
If so, then here begins a new journey for me to better code.11 -
Setup a pi to be functioning as vpn server and pihole tonight.
Now working on a Jasper voice assistant on another pi, because I can choose for offline speech processing and don't have to use a mass surveillance network for this (google).
Today is a good day.19 -
!!depression
I used to measure my performance in features per day (or week, depending on their scope), or tasks/day or loc/day for huge projects. My usual was two to three small features a day, and some progress on a larger one.
Now I’m so burned out and depressed that i measure my progress in the amount of days per week that aren’t “zeros” — as in days where i get literally nothing done. Now any day where i get _anything_ done, no matter how little, is a “good day.” I partially refactored about fifty lines of json builder spaghetti on Tuesday. That was a great day.
This week I’ve had two zeros, and it’s Thursday morning. I think it’s going to be a three zero week.
Worse: performance reviews were due weeks ago. I still haven’t written mine, and have no idea what i would even write. How can i make myself sound good when i can barely even force myself to eat or take a shower?50 -
Hey Root. Here’s a new ticket for you. It involves lots of things you’ve never seen before, and the only person you can ask is out this week.
Hey Root. Why haven’t you been making good progress every day? Why didn’t you reach out to the guy on FTO? Clearly you can’t communicate. Give me detailed status updates twice a day at specific times, covering <exhaustive list of topics> so I know you’re working. What do you mean “no”!?
Hey Root. Stop working on that ticket, and work on this other ticket. It’s the same thing, but different. High-priority!
Hey Root. You asking questions about that ticket pissed off a legendary golden boy principal dev, and he said it’s a bad idea and that we should have assigned it to a different team, too — you know, the team who usually works on these areas. But we might still have you do it. Please work on the previous ticket that’s in the exact same area until we decide.
Hey Root. Why haven’t you gotten anything done?12 -
I was joking with my colleague what is the best comment for this if hell.
And now my boss send me this 🤣🤣🤣8 -
Today it's Monday. So it's already a shitty day before it starts.
Have a good shitty Monday guys. 👌7 -
ESTIMATING FUCKING HOURS.
Well not literally, that only takes 10 minutes.
But software estimation... anyone pretending to be good at it is a dirty liar. Adding a button? Uh, let's say 2 hours, I mean I gotta poop in between as well, and it's probably some broken bootstrap theme with hacked custom margins.
Building a commenting system coupled to an ancient CRM? Uh... maybe one day? Maybe a month? I don't even know what the CRMs looks like? You won't show me because "that's irrelevant"?
WELL THEN I DON'T FUCKING HAVE A CLUE.
And in the time we spent on discussing time estimations, I could have written like half of the feature... or zero... because you still haven't fucking shown me what the CRM API looks like.
YOU KNOW WHAT I'LL GIVE YOU AN ESTIMATION. ME. VACATION. DONE IN 6 WEEKS.6 -
I have never been in a dev company , though I am programming now for 6 years. Started to freelance last year as android dev, making good money. Company Head Hunter called me yesterday Offering me a 60k € salary as employee. Told him : sorry, Its not that convenient for me (I Prefer to stay independent, even though it sounded very charming)...later that day he contacted me and Offered 90-100k as entry.. Wow.. I didnt even finish my degree yet and I get Offered that much. Android ftw!
23 years old and from Germany btw11 -
First day at new job yesterday, and it was really enjoyable, it's nice to be at a place that is actually competent at software development. I actually have people I can turn to who are tons more experienced than me.
Aside from the usual orienteering, I spent my time examining their existing systems and wrapping my head around the project I'll be working on for my trial period.
People seem friendly, coffee is good, they know what they're doing, willing to experiment and try new things, and I will get a free mac book pro as an employee.
Hope I get this.3 -
Unexperienced digital immigrant: "Let's make a website, can you do this?"
Me: "Yeah."
"But you gotta use wordpress. We want to be able to change the content easily. Also we want to have that website done fast."
"Meh, ok."
one day later
"Are you done yet?"
Me: "No, I got to find a good way for the lightbox I'm still implementing to fetch data from posts blabla"
"Why are you not done yet? Just take a plugin, even I can do that. Wordpress is so easy, it's just 1, 2, 3 and done."
Yeah I have an idea. Why don't you just make the website yourself.4 -
'your good with computers right'?
Me: I work with one every day so I guess...
Can you fix a problem I have with my pc? (relatively old man, and I feel bad for him so I agreed)
Next day he had me fix 4 laptops (from his kids) and a Macbook of his own almost all had shady malware and were WAY behind of their windows updates... Like sub wannacry level...
Rip one of day of my vacation 😠8 -
Every fucking day in my company, we get an email from the HR titled "Good Morning, have a nice <DAY_OF_WEEK>", and the message contains a low quality shitty picture grabbed from a random Google search containing a equally shitty quote.
Today's quote read "Happy Friday! Friday is a day to finish your goals of the week!"
lmao like am I suppose to wait till Friday to finish my 'goals of the week'?
I'm so sick of these dumb fucks someone send help 🙄9 -
It's a shame devRant has gone to hell, but as the moderation seems to be non existent now in a time it's desperately needed, today I kill my ++ subscription.
This was the first community and probably the last I actually thought was worth investing in and making the most of, but it turns out I lost that gamble.
It's a shame really, this place used to be the absolute highlight of my day, you guys... and of course ladies, got me through a lot in life and a lot in my career and I'll appreciate the good times, but these days; well I don't even feel good about supporting this place, how the turns have tabled.

New job today, here is my start so far:
coworker: Hi, first you have to set up your lamp project..
me: Good, let's do it.. Please give me the repo git URL
coworker: here is everything, but.... the database is on MySQL.
me: ok, did you have any TeamSQL or something to track this?
coworker: nop.
me: check the database and see the whole file size is 4GB.... Checking the file on plain .txt i see the problem WORDPRESS.
So far to import this file on my LAMP i use Bigdump script and works like a charm.
coworker: Take it easy dude, it's your first day. You can do this task in a few days, don't rush it.
me: :/7 -
Darn it, I was having such a good day. Just sitting over here in sysadmin land watching the Java devs tear their hair out over the Log4j vulnerability, when someone just had to ask me about the Jenkins servers my team maintains.
Jenkins doesn't use Log4j! What a relief!
Jenkins does, however, have third-party plugins, some of which use Log4j. And thus my relief was short-lived and now I'm also tearing out my hair trying to patch this shit.17 -
long && scam && rant?
At my parent's: phone rings..
Me: hi this is XYZ (in German)
He: hi this is ABC from Microsoft tecnical suport (strong Indian accent, sorry toall Indian devs who might feel offended, no intention)
Me: hi... (I'm learning for my exams and don't have a VM with Windows installed currently, so no time to "play")
He: we got some worrying data from your Windows computer. You might have a virus and we need to run a few tests to verfy it. Do you know what that is?
Me: yeah, a scam.
He: sorry, sir I didn't understand you, could you repeat?
Me: yeah, I know what " this" is. It's a scam, and we only deploy Linux here. (lie, we have Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as an iPhone, iPad and Android devices in the house, guess who is "support"...) But good luck with your next call.
He: (kind of friendly) oh. I see. Well have a nice day too.8 -

It’s sooo weird.
I’m generally not feeling happy or good or “okay”, I’m almost always rather shitty but just keep going through my day without complaining too much because that’s what most of us do..
Today, for the first time in at least one (very lonely, cold and boring) year, I went outside for a smoke and felt good. No idea why.
Everything was orangy/yellowish outside because of the clouds after the first sunny day in weeks.
Its raining slightly but not so much that you actually get wet.
I just had this feeling of “yea, that’s good enough” which I haven’t had in probably 4-5 years or so.
Maybe it’s because I got a little bit of sun for once and saw other people walking 2m around me, I don’t know..
But it felt good.
Does that feeling sound familiar to anyone or am I just finally going crazy?
I also apologise for my last 50 rants not being about dev or rant but I’m lucky to not have much to rant about in my current job 😅10 -
Day of the interview sr. Architect says: "We have near 100% unit test coverage in our code."
One month later when I tell him there are 0 unit tests written against 300 projects: "Yeah, I knew that was a problem."
What can you do when the people who want to hire you lie outright to your face?
Oh yeah, and not a god damned one was written using any sense of object oriented programming at all. Every single damned project is written like its on a motherfucking punchcard put together by a cs 101 student with a 2 hour fucking deadline.
I can understand if it needs some work, just tell me. Don't fucking lie to me just to get me in the door to fix a problem you know you have. JUST HAVE SOME FUCKING RESPECT FOR YOUR CANDIDATES AND DON'T FUCKING LIE TO THEM!
Off to drink some scotch and think about what it would be like to shove a finger deep enough into my nostril to hear a pop and smell popcorn before going off into that good night.
I said good day.3 -
So, 27 hours. 27 hours I've been awake at this point.
I was actually planning on sleeping last night, but I was talking to my ex for a while (until around 2 am). Beat Portal again. Decided to get a thing or two done real quick. By the time I got that shit done, it was like 5, and I have to be up at like 6:45, so I felt like sleeping wasn't worth it anymore. Had a fairly good day at school, managed to stay awake (even through AP chemistry!), kinda started talking to a girl.
I'm fucking tired guys.16 -

Have a good day all7 -
We gave one of our more 'difficult' clients a quote of 30days to rewrite alot of there application. Two hours later we are in a conference call and they have a 'great idea' they will come in for a whole day and share knowledge to speed it up.
For some reason the project manager has decided that it's a good idea for me to be alone in a meeting room all day with 2 people coming in and an 'expert' Skyped in to watch me programming and 'help out'. With all of there knowledge they think it will only take a day...
It's going to be a long Tuesday...6 -
It's weird that this is the community where I'd be posting this, however.
After 16 years of smoking, I tried to quit smoking yesterday.
boi oh boi it is hard 😂 but 2nd day smoke free so far.
From past experiences, I'm almost past the hardest part.
I decided to quit with the first day of lent to have a bit of an extra motivation so if you're into prayer, prayers and good whishes are appreciated9 -
"What we can do to get all on time? ", manager asks
"Can we have 4 more developers on the project?", dev asks
"No, that's not gonna happen. Let's be realistic", manager says
"Is it realistic to ask 3 devs to ship 20 features in a week, reviewed and tested?" dev asks
"Actually 2 of you, because our contractor goes into a vacation. But you can do overtimes, can't you?"
"I prefer not to but even in that case I can't guarantee that as it's not realistic. But at least can I leave earlier and work more from home more because there are severe delays on the train lines and if I have to commute 4 hours a day it won't help", dev says
"Well, I'm not sure if that's a good idea. You have to communicate with people, you know. We have to ship things. But we can discuss this tomorrow as I have to leave early today. I have to take my kids from school"
Really? Wtf?4 -
Pretty simple oversight in a SQL pull led someone to run about 3,300 background checks that had already been run. Somebody told me we spend $25 per check, which would have totaled around $84,000. It ended up being much less, but for a good 40 minutes I assumed I'd be looking for other work the next day.1
-
Let's start the story with just a bit of a background: I'm coming from a rather poor family so I always saw my parents working 24/7 to, you know, have a decent future. When I first got into the IT industry, I went full workaholic and worked overtime every day, taking other responsibilities etc. Got promoted fast, jumped through 3 companies, and all is good.
Present day company:
- I'm working 12 hour days
- Managing smaller teams and interns
- Starting new projects incognito and giving them to the execs (for the good of the company ofc)
- Doing lots of stuff outside my responsibilities
COVID hits, I get very sick 2 month ago... I get laid off??? I'm literally 5 employees in one, and, "the fact that I got sick means that I left home and wasn't working"???
This also comes at a time when every family member was also laid off so I had the only stable job.
Not even sure if I even have the will to work hard for someone else anymore, this is fucked up.4 -
At a point in your life, you'll settle down abit, and you start to think about what you've done in the past (idk) years of your life.
Then you think about your career, how everything is ever since you discovered you were good at a certain thing since highschool.
be it programing, writing random codes, pentesting (or if you had that "hacker" phase in your life) or fixing laptops and etc.
"Good"
You think about the word, and you had a thought: You only know how to do it, how it works, how its done, and how to do it.
You only "Know", it takes practice, patience, dedication and years (or months depends on you) of experience before you can really say for sure you're "Good" at it.
Me? Im no where near good. but that doesn't stop me from going there.
And i hope the same goes for you. You can do it,
Have a great day.3 -
*Goes for an interview*
Interviewer reads my resume and goes on to say : "You are the first person today, whose resume doesn't include 'machine learning' ".
Me : *Points towards Machine Learning written in my resume* Sir here it is.
We both have a good laugh about it.
That day i realised that EVERYONE is 'learning' machine learning. EVERYONE.4 -
Good morning guys,
Have a nice day with your task today.
Let's smile and be positive you will feel better and more productive ^^

I'm starting to have some doubts about carrying around a phone in my pocket all day. What if my tender swedish meatballs get cooked by the radiation? Not good.14

!dev,
I have a baby. He doesnt like sleeping. He has GERD (reflux).
He rarely sleep more than 2 hours at a time (probably 1 a week).
The best he has ever slept in his 11month of living was 5 hours. That day he was sick and he ended up in hospital.
All good, he is still alive and well.
But he goes down at 7pm and wakes every 2 hours if not less.
Somestimes he is easy to put down and thongs are bearable, but many times it can take up to 30-45 minutes to out him down.
I dev during the day but i am longing to have nights where i can completly concrntrate. But my partner has been survivjng on broken sleep for about a year now.
She lets me have longer stretches but i either stay up late and havr to feed the baby and jiggle him, which breaks concentration and has pbliged me to get an extra desk and screento be put into an uncomfortable place so i could code at home (my orfice is a rent out 10msquare batch in the garden).
Or sometimes i just get up at 3 or 4am so that he can sleep on me 2eme i can jiggle him when he wakes.
I cant deal with being woken every 2 hours. I throw tantrums like im a 7 year old.
Ive rarely had such a sucking life quality as now.
Its a good things babies a cute i tell you that!!!!6 -
I was part of a on-call rotation. We had ~800 microsites with decent traffic on this one box, because that's a good idea...
One day the box was experiencing kernel panics and causing core dumps. After exhausting every possiblity I decided it was time to restart the box:
sudo shutdown now
Missed the -r and the box was not accessible remotely. Had to wait for someone at the data center to terminal in.
Downtime was ~2 hours.
This was caused by a crontab that automatically ran apt-get update & apt-get upgrade... Also made by me... None of this should have worked or allowed to be done! -
Some old couple screaming I was a liar and a thief because I told them their HDD needed to be exchanged because I wasn't able to install any OS on it... It kept failing on every CD / pen drive I used but it worked with the other store... I left them screaming alone outside the store after telling them to have a good day with a poker face...5

Freelancing sucks. "A good developer told me this should take a couple hours." Or "I need an Uber like app with built in payment and social integration. We have a $50 budget and it shouldn't take more than a day or two to build." Or "I need a simple game built. Should work on Apple and Android. No budget but we could work out a share of profits." Really wish I had a real job...8
-
1. Start ur day posting Good morning in #general thread.
2. Say Hello Team in the project group (slack).
3. Have a standup call with the entire team and discuss what everyone would be doing.
4. Evening 6 pm go on another call with the team explaining what you did for the day.
5. Time tracking software should always be on, so we can monitor your keystrokes.
6. Track time on Clickup tasks, as well as move them to appropriate tabs indicating their status.
7. Before u log off, post a detailed report on the group chat about what you did for the day.
Surely, this will increase productivity of the team, right?10 -
| Me and my team presenting an half-assed AI project to our lecturer.
Note that the algorithm doesn't work and we have a placeholder |
Lecturer after looking only at the UI: The project looks very good, I believe we are done here.
Team member: Don't you want to check the code?
Me: *trying to choke him without anyone noticing*
Lecturer: No need.
Lives were saved that day.3 -
A good quote everyone should follow:
"Find a job you like, and you will never have to work a day in your life." -
Email: "we have carried out a phishing test company wide"
Me: Nice!
Email: "results are here"
Me: wow, already done? Didn't even see the email. I must've subconciously discarded it! Damn, I'm good!!
Email: "the test was carried out yesterday"
Me: *was OOO y-day*

At the end of each work day, once I am sitting down, I take a moment to do a little stress relief exercise.
I get in my car, make sure all doors/windows are shut, make sure the coast is clear, and I yell at the top of my lungs.
The relief is almost instant. And even if it was a good day, sometimes a good, loud yell can just help to relieve any build up tension, anxiety, or stress you may not have known you were under. Give it a try (:2 -
getting into dev work is such a shit show. thinking back 2 years ago I decided to switch career so went on bootcamp and starting looking for junior role.
as you know full well all jobs requires 5+ years when the tech has only been around 3. Anyhow, got a junior full stack role at a start up, all good , great pace (cos of startup) and wide range of tech to learn. one minute i am doing great , next day I am not good enough and got let go (WTF?) ,also whats up with some backend devs Jesus why wouldnt you let me put a " on aws because you are the backend dev what the fuck is wrong with your ego man?
fun story number 2: after being let go of my first role due to being good dev for one day and bad the next. I went for an intern role for really low paid. well fair enough I am here to learn right guys? nope, i have experience with the main tech from my last job and I managed the take home test and despite I told them i have more experience front end they criticise my backend code , despite i was able to tell them what I have done not so well and I have found a better solution AT THE INTERVIEW. still not good enough. I was really doubting myself If I am that shit at being an fucking intern with a stack I have experience in.
fast forward another job interview I landed my current role with fantastic culture, good line manager & tech lead. nice colleague and I am being treated like a prince with the work i put in. Why is this industry so fucked?
so, folks out there trying to get into this game. dont lose hope, you can do it , you just need to get fucked a bit to know whats good out there!5 -
Today is a sad day for me.
I lost all of my data today. My phone was in my pocket and the Iris scanner was looking for a face. I guess it did it multiple times because I found that it had completely reset my phone.
I'm pissed mostly because I knew I had some control over when I could have backed up my phone... I could have at least been pushed back a month but now I'm pushed back by a whole year!
That is a fuck ton of time for things to have happened.
I'm just sad right now guys. There was some good stuff that could have been saved.11 -
Story time.....
I only had one mentor. I am a self-learned guy.
He was my mentor in a company where I was interning. He was a Senior Android Developer and I was just a rookie Android Developer working under him.
He never taught me directly but at times he used to send me links of a source for the problem I was having.
At the end of my first working day, I asked him-"Do you think I was useful to you today? "
He bluntly replied-"Nope, none at all"
Those words hit me so hard. My eyes became moist. When I thought about It I did realize that day I was overwhelmed by so many topics I was new to. I was determined to work my ass off from the next day. And I did.
Fast forward to the last day at the company. It was 31'st December, we were having New Years Eve's party. Everyone was a little drunk except for the interns. In front of everyone, my mentor said-"You were the best intern I have ever had such a good intern that I did not have to work last few days", everyone agreed and then he hugged me.
I was on the seventh heaven that day. Throughout my journey back home, I had a broad smile on my face.6 -
Although today Friday,
It was a very sad day for me, I just got relieved of my only remote dev job, now to unemployed, I have a wife and home to take care in a semi bankrupt country, I need help.
Do you know where I can get good remote contracts?18 -
Mom: "so... you do things with the computer, but what do those things do?" or "I have no clue what you just said, but good luck with that"
Father: "couldn't you have gotten a real job? Like machining or warehouse management, where actual work can be seen rather than sitting on your &ss all day, typing on that keyboard"
- he changed his view real quick when I showed him my paycheck. ($3/ hr more than him)
Brother: "cool"
Ex-gf: "I hate you" (more because of my starting pay)3 -
It has been a loooong time since i have had awesome programming day like today, i've been doing earth simulator kind of game for mobile and lots of its core mechanics are starting to take shape. Still long way to go but it feels great! Days like these remind me why i started programming. I will have to deal with memory management because there will be lots of shit happening on screen not yet sure how to deal with that in corona sdk. Sorry for good feels.11

!rant but help?
I currently have Kali (for labs I'm working on to teach myself the things I didn't learn in school), Ubuntu (downloaded for school), and Fedora (downloaded for my database class)... other than Kali already having Metasploit in it, I don't see a difference between these and I know there are more versions of Linux.
What would be a good starting place for every day use, that'll support Citrix receiver (required for work no idea what its requirements are but I can find out, if i can't use it in Linux, I'll dual boot) and virtual box (or other virtual software, don't mind learning new systems), and that i can also have room to grow for security learning?18 -

Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.
Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for building such a great platform, that allows fellow developers to vent about *certain* things from time to time. Keep up the good work!2 -
Day 5, saga of fighting crystal reports and Oracle drivers: I have finally lost the rest of the hair on the top of my head, and fear my beard may be thinning. My rubber duck seems to be suffering from a personality disorder... things aren't looking good.1

So I was told why a bash with Git isn't allowed in my company.
The people that built the development kit (IDEs, tools, etc) estimated that Git wasn't necessary since integrated in Visual Studio.
They clearly never tried to do a pull request or a rebase then. Good to know.
(a coworker gave me a way to have a bash anyway, so that made my day \o/ but rant needed anyway) -

Today I showed some of my non-programmer friends results of a simple program I wrote (very simple but very visual). They really enjoyed it and even thought of alterations I was able to implement.
I really enjoyed feeling that what I do has meaning 😊
Hope you have a good day!1 -
Long story short a guy texted me on Xing, he had an interesting idea, I joined in and now we are founding a startup.
Short story long, a guy texted me on Xing. I usually don't give a fuck because there always just fucktards that want to offer me modern enslavement. No thanks you lifeless greedy hamsters! (no offense) This time was different though. It was not the usual kind of words and the idea sounded pretty awesome. So I gave it a try.
We met in a Café and talked about the idea and about my role in it. It went pretty well and we basically had a nice little chat, coffee and cake.
I was still not convinced. It sounded to good to be true. Why would something like this ever happen to me? You know that kind of feeling. It was like "Hopefully I'm not selling my soul to the devil now."
We now work on the project, already have 5 customers and are a step before the first financial investment. I'm pretty amazed how that turned out!
Now to disappoint you a bit more (or maybe to give you hope?) All I've worked so far (except that one little one-year internship) happend by, me talking to someone that had a job, me being honest about what I want and me rejecting anything that runed my guts inside out. That's it. I never really applied for something. I just get to know the people and with that comes the opportunity. Just be respectful, curious and honest. The others will notice. Chances rise that you'll find something you love todo.4 -
So salty. Just got off from a long day at work with my coworkers after a significant sprint, so we all go to karaoke to celebrate and let loose. But naturally I have to be under 21, and the karaoke place cards, so I end up taking an Uber home by myself, which felt really fucking embarrassing. I wish there were venues in the city that didn't require you to be above the magical number of 21 years of age to have a good time.5

This is getting annoying.
For the past >half a year I've been chasing windmills. This is what my BAU day looks like:
- We login to client's network
- We start running some Sanity tests before the actual runs (actual runs are hell of an expensive (financially and time-wise) thing to launch) to make sure environment is OK.
- Sanity tests fail. wtf? Nothing's been changed since y-day!
- Spend ~3-4 hours digging logs, code, more logs,... Apparently some genius decided to change a single parameter.
- Spend another 1-2 hours trying to work around that parameter (since apparently that genius did have a task to do that, so we'll most likely have to find a way to live with it)
- Restart the whole env (~30min).
- Launch a Smoke, Sanity tests to verify env state.
- Launch the actual test
- Go home.
Next day:
- We login to client's network
- We start running some Sanity tests before the actual runs to make sure environment is OK.
- Sanity tests pass.
- Run the actual test
- Concurrency on RDS database is sky-rocketing! WTF did that come from??? Nothing's been changed since y-day!!
- Spend ~1-2 hours looking for anything changed, dig some logs for anything unusual. Nothing.
- Escalate to DBA. 2 hours later DBA says "fix the app". thanks for nothing mate....
- Spend remaining 2 hours analysing AWR. Give up, restart the whole RDS instance. Another hour wasted.
- Time to go home. Out of curiosity run Sanity test -- all good. Run the actual test -- all good. wtf??
- Go home
Next day
- We login to client's network
- We start running some Sanity tests before the actual runs to make sure environment is OK.
- Sanity tests fail. wtf? Nothing's been changed since y-day!
- Spend ~3-4 hours digging logs, code, more logs,... Apparently some genius decided to change a single parameter.
- Spend another 1-2 hours trying to work around that parameter
- ..... I think you know where this is going.
And this keeps going on and on, day by day. Spending the better half of the day chasing windmills and doing our actual work on the last hour of the working day or even after that.
We have plenty of interesting tasks in our Jira but we're squirels spinning in the wheel and never being able to touch them.
It feels like I'm wasting my time. I could do so much more with my time!
[just needed to vent ] -
I know we have a lot of talented people here. Piece of advice, what ever you build, believe in it. See it through. No matter how good of an idea incompleteness won't get you anywhere.
After all every other day we all analyze different successful products and say "huh... that's nothing. Even we can do that".
Well thats the difference "We" can do that, they DID it.
See your ideas through. Stay motivated =)1 -
First Rant here.
So I was working on some integration test issues when I found this by accident made by a professional level SW engineer:
@Test
public void testMethod() throws ApiException {
Response res = null;
try {
res = serviceToTest.callMethod();
} catch(Exception e) {
assertNull(res);
}
}
Was wondering why tests were being green after some code changes I've made cuz tests could have not been green afterwards.
Together with a senior (I'm also professional only) I've tried to explain him for a good 1-2hrs why this code is useless and he still did it. Good thing there are no errors in the real implementation from him after fixing the tests as it's code freeze here and we are having go live in a few days 🙃
Also luckily he isn't working on our code anymore and has only been doing so for a few weeks.
Wasted a day with it and gonna check all of his code now before I run in the next surprise.1 -
Why do theoretical computer science and maths lectures mostly start at 8 am. I am a nocturnal creature to me is like having to wake up at 3 am for others. There are other kinds of people that like to get up early so here is a suggestion: Why don't we agree that all lectures start at 11:00 earliest? It is a good time in the day for a lot of people and I would have the time to inject myself with some Mate tea.8

The worst interview . . . .
So I wasn't looking for a job, but I wasn't happy in mine, and I would listen to pitches. Recruiter calls me about a Java job. I tell him I know JS and it's probably not a good fit. He insists my resume looks good and that they are happy to train. I know just enough Java to relent. Eventually we set up an phone interview for a day I happen to have off anyway because I'm going out of town. Morning of, I'm waiting around for the call. An hour after the scheduled time, the recruiter calls and tells me they had an "emergency" and wouldn't be able to speak today. One whole hour of my day, making me late to leave town: no one anywhere in the whole company could give me a call, no explanation, no apologies, for a job I had told them I wouldn't be a good fit for anyway.
I left them hanging the rest of the weekend and then take my name out of the running on Monday. Respect people's time and lives!4 -
I just started as a computer science major, and I'm a little irritated because I think I know more than my proffessor. I was excited that I would be pushed to my limits, but the other day I asked him for things I should work on to get ahead...
Him: Sure, page 475 has some good projects. Just don't go past chapter 9 unless you're confident with pointers.
Me: I did C before C++ and I hated pointers.
Him: C doesn't have pointers, you must have been using a different version of C.
Me: OK
Like really? I just can't wait till next semester.7 -
First company I worked for, overall it was a good experience, but at one point they promoted a consultant to project manager, and their planning skills were about as good as their people skills, which is to say, appalling.
We had a project update for a huge client, that required, for political BS reasons, that most of the team spend several weeks on-site, 300km away from home.
Go-live was approaching, and the plan was: migration starts Friday night, shortly after midnight (so actually, Saturday) once the client’s IT confirms DB is backed up. Expected duration: 5 hours.
- So, you expect me to work from midnight to 5am on Saturday? And when do we start working on Friday?
- 9am, of course.
- 9am!? So you actually planned a 20 hour work day? (Note: legal maximum here is 10 hours in a day, 40 a week)
- And we have to be there on Saturday 1pm to recheck everything is running smooth.
wtaf were they thinking?2 -
People who don't mind their business.
So a while back, in a casual conversation I mentioned to a customer that I maybe might *possibly* have some jewish ancestry, on my *fathers* side, like my grandparents. Distant ancestry. Like the sort of distance that leads to things like dumb polish jokes.
Anyway, this guy starts coming in on a regular basis and talking about jewish related things constantly and I just want to ring him up and be left alone.
He asks me "so aren't you supposed to be in synagogue or something? I thought you're people were really adamant about not working on the sabbath?"
I looked at him deadpan and said "Money is my religion. Have a nice day."
He laughed nervously "uh yeah, thats good, okay, gotta run."
Best part was he forgot his eleven cents in change.18 -

This is a good Experience -
I used to go to a class to learn C++(was a kid back then).
One of the sir there told me -
"Anybody can write code, just knowing coding is not enough, idea is more important. You should have good ideas and solutions, you can alaways find people to code for you"
This has stuck with me till this day.1 -
I came around the corner in the corridor where a senior PM talked with an engineer.
PM: ... and that's why a good team is so important and we also need sensitive people.
Me: do we have some here?
PM: oh yes, I'm highly sensitive.
Me: one learns something new every day. :-)1 -
This might seem like a dumb rant to have but I just started a new job, and I asked my boss about the Work From Home policy and basically, there is no work from home, at all. I'm bummed out because I got into a really good WFH rhythm at my last job and now I have to go into the office every day, even though I am stationed in a different city than the main company office anyway. I'm already remote! Why do I have to pay to come into work remotely anyway!? Argh.15

Good morning DevRant community its been awhile since i have posted here, i truly hope everyone has been well :-), last weekend i have spent some time at the International boat show in Darling Harbour, Sydney.
I will attach a photo of one of the most beautiful toys i have ever seen!! Has anyone from the dev rant community been down to darling harbour to see the boat show also?.
I hope you all have an amazing day/night wherever you may be!.

We need to normalize not being a passionate CS guru. You can be good at your job and not have passion for it. You don't have to dedicate your life to your career in every facet.
I don't expect plumbers to sit around their house all day during their free time hooking up water lines. Why is it expected that I'm always reading some dev book or learning some new framework or reading some tech blog?
I do other shit, and that's fine. My job earns me a paycheck and I'll improve on the clock, and when I walk out at the end of the day I leave that shit there.
At most I might converse with you informally about tech but I'm not going to spend my little free time going to meetups and pretending like I care more than I do. If you do that's great, but I'm not you and that's fuckin fine too.10 -
On today's episode of "Being the Company Git Guy":
"Good Day jallman112, can you ping me when you have a second? I'm having issues with merging our last branch back to MASTER in GIT. It's forcing me to resolve 400+ conflicts"
Sure. I'll get right back to you.
In a second.

the fuck...
I'm not very good in remembering numbers. But I have lots to remember: apartment entrance code, maestrocard pin, phone pin, s few pins at work, and so on. So I remember patterns my finger mskes on a numpad instead [if you have played Ingress, you know exactly how it works].
There is a pattern for a bank card. Another one for phone pin, etc.
I've been using this technique for years... It has never failed me. I never could remember my pins, but give me a keypad and I'll enter it right away.
Last week smth happened. I forgot 2 pins from both of my bank cards... Both at the same day. And I did not have them written down anywhere for years...

Boss: Hey! I know you just got everything working on that new project. But good news: I have a repo you can clone and we can work together. So just clone that and look at my changes, find something that’s broken, and work away. Oh, I also modified everything to use HTTPS locally. HTTP won’t work anymore. Alright, I’m off on vacation! Ciao!
… and that’s the story of how I spent a day and a half fighting with NPM, Brew, setting up a new CA and self-signed cert, and getting passenger to work with it. The good news is that I can connect locally via 443. The bad news is all assets use http and are thus blocked for being mixed-content. And idk how to fix it. Joy!
Not mentioned: npx removing a required package every time I run it, version mismatches, and the usual NPM problems.11 -
1. I have to learn German (as a language).
2. I have undiagnosed and subclinical ADHD.
3. I have a job that partially needs my brain for 9 hours of the day.
4. I'm coming off of antidepressants. (Life has been hard lately. Needed a little help to cope.)
5. I need to finish learning German in about 2-3 months.
6. I don't enjoy interacting with people.
Any suggestions for what can help with the goal? Software, web apps, services, etc. Specially good non-violent and non-depressing tv-series.20 -
Man, people have the weirdest fetishes for using the most unreadable acrobatic shell garbage you have ever seen.
Some StackOverflow answers are hilarious, like the question could be something like "how do I capture regex groups and put them in a variable array?".
The answer would be some multiline command using every goddamn character possible, no indentation, no spaces to make sense of the pieces.
Regex in unix is an unholy mess. You have sed (with its modes), awk, grep (and grep -P), egrep.
I'll take js regex anytime of the day.
And everytime you need to do one simple single goddamn thing, each time it's a different broken ass syntax.
The resulting command that you end up picking is something that you'll probably forget in the next hour.
I like a good challenge, but readability is important too.
Or maybe I have very rudimentary shell skills.5 -
Why the fuck is 32 bit still a thing on modern windows? I'm trying to make a program that injects some CBT/Shell event handler code into all running applications and I have to do everything twice because the majority of my programs run in 32 bit mode and I can't inject my 64 bit dll... I hope that one day we will say goodbye to 32 bit for good. Fuck!5

My lessons both come from my current side project (I will share it with you in a week or two, the website isn't finished yet):
1. Every project comes to the point where it hurts to continue. Keep pushing, the result is worth it.
2. You aren't as good as you thought you were when you started, but you'll be better than you ever were when you finish.
3. Sometimes, there's more points to a list than you'd expect.
4. One hour per day is easier than five hours a week.
How?
Well. I started out my project knowing some C#, but Jack shit about unity. I know most of what I might build will end up being shit I'm gonna regret, refactor and recycle later. But I don't give a fuck. Doing it is better than planning it.
It sometimes hurts to get rid of a carefully planned algorithm that took hours to build because it fails in practice. But it's the right thing to do.
Never plan too much. If I'd have planned this project out, I wouldn't even have started with what I'm good at: write code, break shit and experiment.
It's easier to progress slowly but steady. Look at some awesome games that have been worked on for ages while the public had their say (RimWorld, Project Zomboid, Dwarf Fortress...) as opposed to those that are developed behind closed doors and rushed to the market before Christmas or some other major event (Mafia 3, Fallout 76, Fallout 4 VR...). Progress slowly, deploy early, push often. And the one hour per day approach is a good way to do this. -
I still hang out with my friends that I have known since we're in elementary school. The whole gang just had dinner and beer at a pub last night. We usually hang out on Friday or Saturday night. Then sometimes on weekends at someone's place cooking meals, playing games etc.
I also hang out with my gf at least one day a week. The activities are *censored*.
Apart from that, the rest of my life is work life.
I won't say my life is very good but I can't say it's terrible. 🤔1 -
Why Microsoft, why.
We have our own Powershell Scripts to delete unwanted apps that are installed from Microsoft on Windows 10, like XBOX app.
I installed a new workstation for a new worker and deleted the apps with the scripts.
The Day the new worker arrived, it was my task to give him an introduction, what Programs we are using and so on.
Worker logs into machine and opens Startmenu.
All Apps that I have deleted with the scripts are back!
Why, you ask. Because Microsoft made it so, that when a new user logs in on a machine he has never been before, every single apps that has been deleted is reinstalled.
I'm searching for a method to shut this down for good.
Help is much appreciated.5 -
Just wrote a rant/story about my school day, seriously spend 10 - 15 min writing it and I was just about to post it, but boom - "Unfortunately devRant has stopped"
Sometimes with good custom ROM comes unstable updates.
P.S. if you think devRant would have saved my rant, don't worry I thought that too but when I checked it, it was empty just like my devRant notifs!!2 -
[Half question / half rant]
Would you rather work with a laid-back, humorous colleague who produces shit code and won’t understand advice for improvement?
Or would you rather work with someone who’s more serious, even slightly boring, but who takes quality seriously and is open to advice?
Yes I’ve worked with both types. Hands down I prefer working with the latter. With the first dude I’ll have good conversations and a good laugh at his puns and jokes. But at the end of the day I’m pulling my hair trying to make sense of his code and spending a shitload of time reviewing his PRs just to make sure he’s not fucking things up even more.4 -
Once a guru of mine told me,
"A developer is one who can convert his/her ideas to code and doesn't need to depend on external libraries to help him/her"
His words actually have made me a different person. I mean since that day, I actually started developing things on my own. Until then I was hardly good at coding. Wasn't even clear with the basics. But those words of his had a deep impact on me.
Today I suddenly started thinking about that and honestly, I'm so glad to have met him. I'm so glad that he actually said the above thing to me.
Today, I'm at a position where I can legit build anything I want.
From websites to bots, I make my ideas come to life. All thanks to my guru.
Just thought this might be a good thing to share to motivate others. If it motivated me, I'm sure it might motivate atleast one other person in this community.2 -
I'm the only one who after saying "nah, come on, I will backup it tomorrow, what could happen?", spends the day after by reinstalling Windows (after an awesome crash) and praying that the project he was working on for months is still there?1

Been stuck with a fucking 13mbit internet connection shared between three people for the past seven years. Lived cheap in a nice location, so it was worth it, still frustrating af. Finally moved, new city, new place, new internet. Currently sitting on 300mbit at home. Downloaded update for car nav, 25gb, took about 15 minutes, where it would previously have taken all day. Feels fucking good man.6

Never have I been so satisfied as I am right now after having implemented a login and user account system with the ability to update user preferences with databases n' shit in PHP after only knowing PHP for a day.
Speaking of all that, do you guys know of any good place to make sure all my stuff is secure? No SQL injections n' the like.4 -
Hey this is the first time i post here.
I just started working part-time for this company last week. What i have to do is to change some windows from Win32 to WPF. As i was reading the legacy code i just had to sigh man. They have like 100 projects in a single solution, from C++ to C#, everything acctached to each other, with almost NO comments or docs. Wtf man? I don't know how it actually works in the industry (this is my first dev job) but when you write fucking 20 classes with each one contains bunch of attributes, methods, properties, you can't just leave all the code's semantics in their names. And by the way the app is so fucking ugly i bet they have appointed part-time developers as UX engineers... Even i have little knowledge about UX/UI, i just can't bear with this kind of ugly and confusing and unintuitive production with a cost of a good photo editting software.
Ok there may be much more to rant in the future but let me try through this and tell you more. Have a good day. :)5 -
Continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/4723170/...
So last post I said day three. That's incorrect, and here we are at the end of day two. Today was filled with everything from extraordinary views from snowy peaks, to rain and snow being blown parallel to the ground, as well as river crossings without bridges or paths, and a whole lot of soaked socks. After our 22km hike we finally arrived at the outpost at which we were served an amazingly good meal. Due to us arriving so late and having to eat almost immediately I didn't the chance to snap a picture, but I have this picture of a few reindeer, so I guess you can have that instead.
Now it's time to button up my pants, leave this toilet booth and head to bed. Cya tomorrow!4 -
Do any of you guys have eye strain? I worked on a project for like 6 hours day before yesterday and have been having severe we strain since then. Haven't touched my laptop since. My doctor says my eyes are good, just need to follow the 20/20/20 rule, which is, work for 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and repeat.
Do any of you guys have eye strain? Hope many hours do you clock on a PC? What do you do to minimize the strain on your eyes? Do you ever fear you'll go blind?
I have so severe eye strain it gives me migraines 😥21 -
Todays story: conversation between me and my brain about a app that i have planned for a long while.
The application is just a huge, specyfic json editor/manager for a game that i like. The game uses json files to determine unit charactetistics. So in order to make modding easier i want to make a tool for that that is fancier and easier to use than a notepad.
Brain> Lets make a app that allows you to mod the game easier!
Me> Good idea. How would you want to make it?
Brain> Lets use C# cause you main that lang currently and you have experience with json parser lib.
Me> That is true. So what do you wanna implement first?
Brain> Oh. I have thought about it before! I want to implement: (10 000 features) and maybe few more later!
Me> It sounds like a infinity project, shouldnt you implement like 1 or 2 features at first and then jump to other ones?
Brain> Yes... but i dont wanna refactor those features latter so let just implement them all at once!
Me> Dammit brain! Let just implement just one feature now! Like a simple json editor. You can use inhieritance to reuse the code later.
Brain> Ok...
* Starts with that one feature but one day later starts coding 6 more *
* Cant publish the app yet, the code looks like shit, gui is unfinished because brain wanted only to test those 6 unfinished features without propely implementing them *
Me> Brain WTF! You said that you are going to focus on one feature at the time!
Brain> I got carried a bit...
Me> ...
Me> Ok. I understand. Let just refactor the code and clean the project out of those unfinished features.
Brain> No. I have a depression now...
Me> FUCK.
* 2 month passes by without any progress on ANY of my projects*
current day
Brain> I still have depression...
Me> Ok i dont care about that anymore! Tell me something that i dont know!
Brain> Oh I have good news as well!
Me> ???
Brain> What about the home server that is going to store all mods made by the users so they can share it? It would be a good practice with networking!
Me> * Gives up *1 -
I wanted to rant but I just been moved from a governemental project in Python 2, to a shiny one on Python 3. Have a good day you too!

Today is the first day of the last year of my bachelor's degree.
It's also the first day of work for one of my closest friends.
I wish him the best for this new adventure.
Good luck my friend and have a nice day !1 -
Firts social hacking ever 😁😁😁
In the bus at the end of the day
Me:(fake phonecall to Bell)ho you offert me a 10go of data per months for 30$ ! Wow
Guy in bus: he call is phone company and give all is Private information in the bus to have a better deal.

Me: now change all you password contains what you publicly said.
Me: have a good day 😋3 -
Judo.
I might sound like one of those wierdos that are overly into Japan, Martial Arts and such, but I really enjoy Judo.
It is a sport where you have to FEEL the contact with your opponent.
Practising Judo made my day-to-day stress go away in just about 20m and also kept me in good shape, made me meet a lot of people/friends, lead me to live in a certain way and interact with people in a certain way (a good way, actually).
It also taught me which parts of the body are the most dangerous/fragile and cause the most pain.6 -
Fun fact : Typing on a keyboard that's not plugged into your laptop will not work. Honestly, I should have taken today off. My toddler woke up at 1am screaming bloody murder and didn't get back to bed until 2:30. There's a construction crew hammering up my 14 year old floors to replace it with new ones. My dog is anxious as fuck with all the noise, and truthfully, I'm just staring into my screen hoping the code will write itself. This code will become production deployment logic, so it damn well better be excellent and bug-free. Not a good day to pick up this task.3

I proposed agile training to my company.
I choose a well known coach around here, with good references.
First 3 days were great. After a month he came back for another session and check progress.
This time, he literally fell asleep during the workshop. Several times. He would ask questions, sit down and quietly fall asleep while waiting for our answers.
We were astonished and embarrassed.
He apparently had a very hard working period and could not cope with traveling and working so much. He apologized some day afterwards and didn't charge us for the day.
He never came back. The team didn't take it very well and my reputation was compromised, as well as trust in the methodology I think.
I kept saying that everybody can have a bad day, but it was probably just to defend myself and my fucking stupid idea of changing the world.
A real fucking shame. Still I can't believe when I remember this.2 -
I'm debugging a script...
It takes 1+ minute to start because it loads data from remote API and apparently loading 80k objects takes a lot of time, even though I need only headers
I could optimize it. Like, add a local cache. But I will not.
Instead I will waste 1 minute, then another minute, then another minute, each time hoping it's the last pass, but no. I will waste the whole day on it and at the end of the day I will still NOT have the slightest idea why it is slow. That is what will happen, I predict it.
Good times3 -
At night is when my creativity starts flowing like a motherfucker. The moment when all the tasks are done for the day and you can start working on your own projects and just lay back and smoke (or drink, whichever you prefer) and zone the fuck out with some good music. Oh and if I've gotten a good work out in that day, then there's no stopping me.
I had no plans to even create an admin panel for my own small project but last night I made one just to make it look professional. After that, I got an idea for a separate project which I started working on. I usually write my ideas down so that I don't get into a complete project cluster fuck with 50 half completed projects, but sometimes you get that golden one that you have to start (currently those are the only two unfinished projects I got). -

During 6 months I updated myself day and night on java, springboot and AWS.
I failed most of the technical interviews on my preferred stack, however I got a job, where the probable stack is C#, dotnet and Azure.
So, I have a couple of weeks of very good quality rant ahead.
I just started.
hmmm let's see, should I use Visual Studio or Visual Studio CODE. I spent the morning before understanding they were different. I could have spent the morning Studying how To Visually fuck you, lame name chooser.
Now I'm following a tutorial.
I need .NET 5.0, but guess what, I have .NET core 3.1.
But wait, fuck, .NET and .NET CORE are not the same thing! Will .net core 3.1 work for a .NET project or not?
And there goes the afternoon. Is he the same guy who choose the names?
I'll tie you with a barbed wire net and fuck you to the core, you asshole7 -
My director has started a new thing. We all have to tell what we did the previous day, what we are planning to do in the current day and if there are any blockers.
Good thing, right?
The only thing is that all these things are already plotted on the sprint board. It’s right fucking there in front of our eyes.
So what do we do? Just reiterate what is already written there. Fuck my productive life.6 -
ME: *runs a load test for the umpteenth time*
RDS DB: *is slow af: HI contentions*
ME: "dear AWS support, I see the RDS has troubles writing to disk as THIS db exhibits 10x higher W latencies than THAT OTHER db we have. Both are identical, apps are identical."
AWS: "Hello, I hope you have a good day. After the investigation that took us almost 2 weeks, we can confirm that there are 10x higher IO latencies to disks: [CloudWatch link]. We also see a high load average during your tests.
We recommend investigating the high load average and tuning your queries along with the database.
I hope this helps, good day."
ME: *are you seriously calling this PREMIUM support package....?*1 -
When you have to made a little game with javascript, and because it's your first game you made a beautiful maze with lot of wall.
Ahahah... i'm shit.
I forgot wall have collision.
I'm here now, with 40 different fuckin' walls and much if and else if conditions.
I hate me.
Yeah i know, I can just change my maze but no... I'm lazy. Cry against the collisions is better.
Have good day.9 -
That moment of panic when you think you have done nothing all day before you remember that you integrated 2 libraries AND contributed back with a PR of feature enhancements. Today was a good day!
-
The Project Management Triangle "fast-cheap-good (pick two, you can't have all three)" is something I've never agreed with.
How would you promise to build something good & cheap?
Doing it slowly will not really make it cheaper. The cost is usually development hours. If it takes 40 hours to make a good product - doing it 2 hours per day isn't going to make it cheaper.13 -
Since roughly 1 year ago I have been making "leftoff" comments in my code, whenever a work day ended or so, with a few notes on what I was doing and what I was about to work on next.
And I recommend it, I think that's good practice. Because I forgot to do it on friday and I have no GOD DAMN CLUE what I was working on :|3 -
you know what im tires of?
Finding a good domain name for a potential business, unregistered, and then using algorithms, the registrar itself snipes it and cybersquats it as "premium".
In otherwords, if you do find a good name, theres no point becauss it'll just be immediately labelled "premium" by an algorithm and lock you out with 5,000 dollar pay wall.
people in 2003 didnt have to deal with this shit. Registrars should be allowed to do this.
Five domain names now, out of a couple dozen I tried, the five good ones I came up with, all five, "premium".
It wasnt like they were even .coms or common words either. Hell one of them had a number in it.
Nope "we have determined spontaneously, through algorithm, you haves selected what may be a valuable domain name, thank you for the service of identifying it for us, we will now reserve it, even though no one else wants it, at a prohibitively high cost."
Like a homeless women finding a winning lottery ticket in a parking lot, and the rich fucking owner running out demanding that she give him it because it was lost in HIS public parking lot.
Like you motherfuckers dont already have enough? You know what a good domain is? Its a basis for credbility. Its the difference between whether people use your service or not. Its the foundation for excitement or interest.
And here we have this "algorithmically marked as premium" bullshit, fucking the poors out of any chance of even a good start.
"Haahahaha cocksuckers, you're not internet startups in the early two thousands! If you dont habe five grand go drop on a dpmain name that isnt even fucking owned, enjoy staying part of the fucking lowerclass!"
These fuckers. Cant believe this bullshit.
Just another day in motherfucking america, where you have to start rich to even get ahead. just one more way gen x, gen y, and gen z got fuckity fucked right in the ass.
fuck this country so much. fuck it all.
never even gonna have a chance to own a home or anything else.
nobody ever offered me a real fucking chance, not once in my god damned life. not even my fucking parents.
might as well drink myself into a coma.13 -
Bad: Delete your production database
Good: Have a backup
Bad: Can't reimport it because your backup procedure uses scheme that are no longer supported for import by your cloud provider
Good: Backup are plaintext and somehow easy to parse
Bad: Spending the rest of the day writing scripts to reinsert everything.
End of the story: everything is up and running, 8hours of efforts1 -

Does anyone else derive great pleasure from creating quality of life/small utility programs?
So I'm learning python in between projects at work (plan on slowly moving new projects to it) and damn, my coding buddy and I have found a package/import for almost anything we can imagine. Heck, we canned ourselves laughing when we started googling random things and still found python packages that do it. I plan to use the language to automate a ton of things when I get a new PC.
Aside from that, I recently in 2 days (1 day building, 1 day bug fixing) made a tiny utility that shaves a good 5 minutes off a certain task for my colleagues at work, and in bulk use will save even more time. It's a textbox and a button only but it felt so nice to make something useful like that so quickly.5 -
When you want to resign to your full time job but you are having difficulty on making decision.
Reasons to resign:
1. They are giving tasks that are not related to web development such as data entry.
2. I can't see a good future ahead on this company. It feels like it doesn't have a goal to grow. The boss is not focusing on this line and instead she is focusing on her other businesses. The boss also has admitted that she can only give 20% of her time. We don't have new projects and challenging tasks.
3. 4 months have been passed and still we haven't receive the yearly salary increase. It should be effected on February.
Reasons to stay:
1. No salary deduction if you are late or didn't complete 9 hours / day. Sometimes I just work for 7 or 8 hours a day.
2. Office is just 30 mins away from my house.
3. When I don't have a task, I usually do my freelance project at the office secretly. So even though there are no challenging tasks at the office, my freelance project helps a lot.
4. You can play games with your friends when you feel exhausted or you don't have assigned tasks.
I recently received an offer from my remote part-time job to work full time 8-10 hours a day and the salary is twice higher compare to current one.7 -
Ohhhhhh shit, this is a good topic.
Well, I just expected more... Better.
Like maybe the programming lecture could have been Java 1.6 rather than 1.2, and taught rather than read from an archaic time of dusty powerpoints.
Maybe we could have used Spice or a reputable circuit modelling tool rather than CircuitMaker; a tool no longer being maintained that barely makes it past install because it was written in a time before circuits.
Maybe day fucking one of the first year, happy clappy, let's teach you HTML lecture the tutor could have just shown us a copy-pasted hello world. Rather than the ugly, mixed-case, no-end-tag-having, broke ass HTML 4 scribble she felt the need to go over every detail of.1 -
Hey friends! Milo here, I sincerely hope all of you are having a tremendous day and or night wherever you may be. This photo i have attached here below is a dream one day i wish to achieve.
A good friend of mine who I personally consider a mentor invited me to check out their workplace which one day i really hope to be able to work in! Such a nice place with a spectacular view! Please pardon the horrible weather on that particular day! :-)
Kindest regards
Milo15 -
So I am only 15 and I am trying to find local businesses that will allow me to either build them a website or let me redo their current website.
Doesnt sound thay complicated right? I have gotten to do it once, for a laid back coffee shop owner whos business went out of business a day after i emailed him about it being done. I mean how the hell does that even happen!
I have tried different types of emails and shown all of my work, which it is all good sites that look professional. Issue is alot of people dont trust email offers or dont trust me cause im 15. I am not much of a person who can walk into a store and talk to the owner about it, i am not social in that aspect.
So anyone have any ideas?5 -
If you're going to build an open source command line tool, please for fuck sake publish the Linux x64 artifact to the world. I don't want to waste half my day setting up a box just to compile your project.
I know you build the artifact, I see it in your public CI system. The badge at the top of your GitHub repo even says it's good today. So seriously, why can't you just publish that binary to S3 so I don't have to waste my day ranting.1 -
rant!
Fuuuuuuuuuuck..... why is CSS so fucking ASS when it comes to working the way it is supposed to. Why would someone create such a broken tool.
end rant.
Thats all, have a good day.3 -
Reply to a recruiter today quoting her email:
You will end up with more qualified people if you don't use blatantly fictitious statements like. "While it's not often that I like to email people I don' t know (especially those in different cities!)" You're a recruiter using LinkedIn, the activity of recruiting is partially doing exactly the above.
No interest, have a good day. -
Good morning class! Let's start the day solving bugs in an Android application that many people have already gotten their hands on, which has 3 mixed languages, no comments in the code and is so bad that not even Android Studio recognizes the sources directory. But it compiles, runs and has a 4 month old bug that no one has been able to resolve.5

Honestly now that I have a job and I work with good people, being on devrant anymore just ruins my day. I love it when people rant about their jobs and code, and I love it when people share cool stuff on here. But the childish and toxic behavior leaves such a sour taste in my mouth. I hope I see you assholes (you know who you are) on the street so I can smack you, and you deserve every bit of what's coming to you. I hope you can turn your life around and actually help the world one day. Til then, I'm going to enjoy my life, because my life is fucking amazing. bye!2
-
It feels weird now. I don't really have much to rant about. That's partially cause I haven't been doing much dev work lately (but the bit I have done, everything's been fine). My personal life is going fucking great for once, so nothing to worry about there (the girl I'm talking to is so fucking sweet, and just amazing overall)
Life is fucking good guys. I hope everyone that might have had a bad day or a bad week or whatever feels better soon. -
Got through an entire day at work with just a "good morning" and "have a good weekend". Team was focused today - it was a good day!

Day 9 of non smoking (attempt no. 16). How do people cope without smoking? its so difficult. After phone call with client... go for a smoke. Get off plane/train go immediately to smoke. Done some good code/solved something, go for celebratory smoke. Have a rehearsal with my band... go for a smoke. Go to the pub...go for a smoke. It’s woven in to the fabric of my existence and unpicking it is a long and painful task. I don’t do the e-cig thing. I don’t want to swap addictions.20

In reference to:
https://devrant.com/rants/2333925/...
Ideas are commonplace things. Just as a challenge today, in a two hour span, I came up with exactly 100 commercially viable ideas, some of which haven't even been tried yet by anyone that I know of.
This is me humblebragging, but it highlights an important lesson:
Good ideas are *genuinely* not worth the bytes or ink it takes to write them if you don't have the skill, connections, marketing, or cash to carry them forward.
I guarantee you, if you aggregated the commercially viable ideas of all the people on this platform, the list would number in the hundreds, probably in the thousands. And the list would be different every week.
Good ideas happen frequently enough because good ideas are a subset of the *ocean* of nonviable and stupid ideas that we all stumble on constantly, every day.
Like finding a needle in a stack of hay..or a nugget of golden corn by digging through piles and piles of steaming shit. It's a numbers game.2 -

First day of my first developer job is Monday. Oh shit. Nerves are starting to set in. What if I’m not good enough for the job? I mean I didn’t the coding assessment they wanted me to do. And passed. Which is why they gave me the job. But fuck man I’m nervous! I have never had a job like this before. And it’s remote after my first week. Oh shit.8

I am so fucking tired of sitting here all day every day adjusting paddings and margins. Oh fucking hurr durr you got one of the millions of fucking elements to not overflow on your page, well does it work on *this* resolution and *this* orientation? No, well fix that and then go back and fix what it breaks.
I swear to God I never want to touch fucking CSS again it's all I've done for a yesr and it is driving me up the god damn wall. This is my career, I shouldn't fucking dread coming in to work because I know how much bullshit I'll have to deal with. It's awful.
I don't get how anyone has good looking complicated pages that just look good on every possible resolution, it's fucking mind boggling that anyone can sit there and adjust heights and widths and paddings and margins and floats for hours on end nonstop just watching shit get broken and fixed and broken and fixed and AHHHHH
I need a fucking smoke and a pint just so I don't have to think about this anymore13 -
I'm so sick and tired of people feeling threatened when improving upon their shitty code! I'm here to do a job and I enjoy my profession.
Don't take that away from me by wasting my time making me say every fucking time that I come from a good place and that I just want to provide a better solution AND not create fucking mess that will have to be rewritten when some ninja bugs occur because of completely unmaintainable crap nobody can understand. Holy shit!
I couldn't care less if you're 10 years in the company. I see that all the good devs left after dealing with your shit every God damn day.
I'm not here to deal with your insecurities and couldn't care less about pointing fingers! I just wanna do better and not write same level of quality over and over again!
You're not getting bonus points from me by sitting on your ass all day and half-assing everything you do with some lame ass excuse.
So no LGTM from me when it's utter error prone shit!
So if you don't wanna help, just get the fuck outta my way and don't waste my time! Jeeez -

Tl;Dr: I ate shit for 3 months and finally got rewarded.
If you read my last rant you might remember that for the last 3 months I was tasked with a formal QA of some hundred word documents. (Checking headers, footers etc.)
This is almost over (8 days left)... Finally...
Today I had to present the work I did to the head of IT. The presentation went fairly well and at the end she offered me that she would be willing to get me a job the city where I'll be moving to study.
I have only met her 4 times during the year that I worked there but someone or something must have convinced her to care.
So it's seems like I'm not going to have to bother with all the usual HR bullshit and will have the opportunity for a steady income during the next 3 years.
Today was a good day. -
In a recent venture, I had to use an office suite and a photo editing software regularly. As a Linux user, I tried using Libreoffice and gimp. But that was just a mess. My other project partners were using MS office. Format, image alignments, fonts.. everything was messed up. Same happened wih the gimp. I know Photoshop, learnt while studying. Gimp was just no match to that. I was forced to go back to Windows. And I was surprised that the latest MS office and Adobe Creative Cloud were excellent. MS office was smoother and faster than Libreoffice.
I love linux. I have tried all the major distros and I love all of them. But I would still say that Linux is not the best option for day to day non-dev tasks. Whatever Richard Stallman and the Open Source Community say, Linux lack good softwares, at least some good document, photo, audio and video editing softwares.8 -
First day at the new internship. Boss man is pretty nice, but there is a language barrier I have to overcome. I'm supposed to be given a laptop, but the IT guy haven't arrived yet. Good thing I brought my own. I have been seated in the corner of the office, away from the rest of the developers, whose names I already forgot. Apparently I'm going to be doing miceoservices, but I have no idea how.. Am I the only one this has happened to?5

Wk33:
Best experience of 2016 is probably just realising I'm a pretty good programmer. I have a physics undergraduate degree and a 1 year masters in CS, I'm working on back end algorithm stuff so pretty mathsy at times, but I've found from working with others that I write good quality code. I've still got lots to learn but I've got a solid foundation, am reading, learning and coding outside of work.
Worst experience of 2016 is working with people for whom it's purely a day job, only about the money, get things done in whatever hacky way works.10 -
Final day on this project, tonight I'll get drunk to forget about the backlog since client didn't hire me longer ( consultant).
I hate leaving unfinished code.
Monday I start my next project, which is refactoring. .Net code to .net core.
Here is to hoping it doesn't rely too much on unsupported 3rd party libraries.
Cheers fellow devs, have a good weekend. -
Coworker pushed some changes and gave me good reason to rant.
Here's my story:
I start implementing a new feature, senior reviews it and suggest some changes, which are actually good ideas. I continue developing and implement the suggested changes.
The next day, senior keeps working on outdated source and makes similar changes like i did on the day before. Just pushes it anyway and breaks fucking everything.
The api now contains redundant information.
My classes still exist, but aren't used anymore. Let's keep some redundant code in the project, because deleting it is so much work.
All the unit tests broke, but he just commented them out, so everything is green again. We have now 0 tests which actually do something in the project, but at least the build is green...1 -
Hey guys, hope you all have a great day.
I am not a professional developer yet because I still didn't have my first client. My goal is to become a freelance Web Developer.
At me moment I working on my own website because I can't hope to find a client if I don't even exist on the Internet.
I already have some kind of prototype but the problem is that it looks really bad in my eyes because I'm anything but a designer.
So my question is if you know any resources where I can learn web design, trends, good practices, theories, anything really.2 -

It always happen
I always think of great game song melodies, and every single day, when i just hum aloud, there is definitely 1 good one. Many times i have a recorder or my phone, but sometimes, i dont which makes me hum all the way to my cell phoneand when it try to record it, i forget the melody making me so frustrated.... -
Anyone know what Safe Agile is?
We're doing project interval planning for next 2 days.... aka long meetings about good knows what...
To me it sounds like bullshit bureaucracy.... because you can't have Safe anything with a team full of monkeys...
That or I just don't like change and giving up control... Or sitting I didn't meetings all day... Especially since I'm deaf and the captions suck...20 -
Yesterday was the last day at my job.
We had a nice review party (the team pushing back to Scrum)
After it they have said some heartworming words, I cleaned my PC and left .
I was amazed to hear all the good words, as I felt the team think the opposite of me.
For example, I felt the team thinks I'm pushy, they said im modest.1 -
Not a rant
After coding, cooking/ book reading is my favorite hobby.
Before last 3 month I took dcsn to give a shot to my other hobby cooking and pause on coding for few months.
I decided to give 100days to my cafe.
Arranging money and perfect location took 2 months , on 16 july I started my cafe not so fancy, just sweet simple.
Means 30 days we're completed,
I was earning 1000 inr as software developer, i am earning 10000 inr daily . My net profit is 1500inr
Moral of the story
Don't hesitate to take risk
Believe on yourself
Never never never start with partnership
Currently I have to pay 1.5 lakh to my ex business partner who left cafe in first 15 days
N
Forget personal life. Your business is your priority.
Not spend even १ full day with my family and gf in last 3 months.
Soon I will back in software.
Have a good day to everyone.11 -
Positively accepting criticism is a superpower I hope to acquire one day. As in jump in joy and violently smile when they say my code is shit level of positive acceptance.
I don't really hate or reject criticism. I am simply saddened by it, on a good day.
so yes, if you have this superpower, where's the source?2 -
Company is replacing "[insert software tool here]" with one that is "better", that "helps us scale", etc. Coincidentally, this always happens when the management muckety muck in charge of that area is replaced by someone from outside the company. While new ideas are good and sometimes needed, I honestly have not ever seen any manager in that position do anything but a "replace what you have with what I used at my last company" exercise. Every day that goes by lowers my expectations of any management figure or exercise. After 3 decades, you'd think those expectations would be low enough to not be surprised anymore. And yet, that's not the case.1
-
Not so much of a rant but recommendation.
Have been listening to a completely epic Spotify playlist all day today whilst coding - "RetroWave / Outrun".
It's really good for keeping my concentration :)9 -
So. I'm a hobby pythonist. I like it a lot, so when a problem occured at my workplace I offered to my boss that I could write something. I don't know what happened, but at the end we agreed that the best way would be to use excel and write the engine in VBA. So, I spend two and a half days to learn the basics and start to write some code to show him a demo version of my idea. At the end of the last day I gave it up. IT HURTS!!!!!! After python it'so dumb and the syntax is so painful... Finally in the last half day I wrote the whole piece of @&*^ in python. I hope it'll be good enough. I don't want to use VBA again. I'm a cnc operator/programmer and I don't have enough time to learn it. It's bad?3

So today (as of 5 min ago) marks a great day for my personal projects! I just got my embedded systems Flash memory driver debugging on my PC in Visual Studio, talking directly to the REAL flash chip, WITHOUT being tied to a embedded target! It's glorious. I can finally debug and write tons of tests without having to worry about the constraints of my embedded system. Ahhh. All the pieces I've needed to build this have slowly come together over weekends, and it feels so good to have this tool in my arsenal now! Great day indeed.
-
What a long horrid weekend this has been.
So much overtime gathered though.
Started Friday 5am, went to Oslo to do some drone footage for one of our clients. Got back home at 11:30pm.
During the day I had also been doing some work for this other client we have, they were supposed to have project launch the 22nd, but called on Friday and said it has to be on the 15th instead.
I got a few hours of sleep, woke and worked all day till I passed out at my desk for a few hours, went to the office (on a sunday) to talk to the PM and CXO about the project (great help, they were my rubber ducks)
Good part, I get so many days off now2 -
So since starting my new role I have had nothing to rant about. That changed today.
HR waited til one day past payroll cut off to issue my paperwork. Meaning I get paid at my old rate this month and then get back pay in my November pay slip.
Those mother cunting bastards waited one day extra to screw me for the whole month.
I've been waiting since the end of September for these twat monkeys to get off their rotting arses and sort this and they do it one day late.
It's a good job that I don't know where they are located, nothing good would be waiting for them if I did.
Edit:
As this got cut from the tags:
HR please kindly go find a rotting puss filled dick and shove it up your lazy fucking arse you pitiful wastes of human meat bags.1 -
Best boss ever. He gave me light working hours, i could ask for a day off whenever i wanted or leave early if i needed to. Never felt like a slave working for him and always felt respected and valued. Taught me basically most of what i know today and introduced me to some awesome games. Never bored me with formal speech. Come to think of it hes more of a friend. If the company was doing a bit better financially i would never had left. Obviously i dont expect to ever have a boss as good as him in the years to come.
-
Take a day off, entire system goes down. Come in the next day: "We need to fix this".
12 hours later we get the system back up and a significant design flaw is now known which needs to be fixed on Monday.
It feels good to have the bandaid in place.
Don't use cursors kids, unless you absolutely have to.3 -
Friday: Expectations vs Reality
Expectation: Work on work for half the day then work on side projects for the rest of the day. Consider it a good day.
Reality: Work on work for whole day. Then have your boss set the expectation to have a project completed by Monday morning that you know will take 3 more days. Hence making you work the weekend to try to get it done in time. -.-4 -
Curiosity killed the cat.. or was it Opportunity?! 🤔
You get to learn new stuff daily.
Not one assignment is the same, and if it's similar, you can hijack the old code, improve it & turn in the better version of it.. or don't improve..totally how you feel that day..if you're not a crappy developer no improvement should still also be ok..
I love mostly adjustable schedule, so there's no biggie of I have a day or two of coders block & can't produce much of value..I can switch tasks & do some simple ones on those days..or just refactor.. all's good..
I love solving puzzles, every bug is a new puzzle I can play with..
So basically, I love being a dev, because it's like being back in school, but only with the subjects you like! -
Put on big headphones, explain you are busy, or just show that you’re not in a good mood.
No seriously, i so don’t have a problem with PMs here. If i receive 2 emails in a day i can call it busy already. Including the daily standup then ofcourse.2 -
I love learning by doing.
Building MVPs and prototypes is the best way. Even better if you have a chance to show and share them in front of an audience (peer pressure can be good!).
Share the lessons you've learned and what you've done wrong, it will help many more people than just yourself.
I've been working for an eLearning company for the last 4 years (CloudAcademy.com) and I'm in love with the idea of learning something new every day. And not just coding. Code is "only" a tool to solve problems, and learning something about those problems and fields will make you a better developer. -

Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now. -
Started the day having a career crisis where I feel worthless and all I have been doing is some worthless web shit that humanity never needed and most certainly, never will.
Good day!3 -
I’m getting good at cooking. The fucking marvel that salt does when I leave salted chicken for a few hours or overnight is something else.
It feels that this already made anything I make around 50% tastier. The hard part is keeping it to a very low minimum to have a reasonable amount of sodium. The other day I had some thin chicken breast slices that were left salted for a few hours, then I cooked them in unsalted butter with a modest amount of pepper and herbs.
And I’ve just read a few pages of the damn book, I’m so excited for the rest.11 -
Firstly, my main wish is to work in the office. I don't like remote stuff and all that. I would like to have a job where you have to go every day except weekend at a certain time and be there for example 7 hours. I would love to have a good who will tell me what to do, I like to listen to people. I would also want to have a secretary, Im not organized. I would like to do either .NET development, Web Development or 3D modeling. If im working .NET, I would like to work in Microsoft. If Im working Web, I would like to work anywhere, with an office, of course. I don't know, I just love the feeling offices give me and the atmosphere in them. And if im working 3D modeling, I would like to work in Bethesda. Oblivion played a big role in my childhood. I don't care for salary, it doesn't have to be anything big, just enough for bills and my children (which I hope ill have).
There, dream of a 15 yo4 -
i cant touch computer for two days, and it make me a strange feel. maybe its a good thing . through travel to relax myself.have a funny day and then start a new coding life😁.this holiday is a long time, after this travel .also have enough time to Learning some good framework.3
-
I take a task, break it down in smaller tasks which can be done in one day, more if some problem came. But let's say if it finishes within a day and I have free time, I don't start the next thing instead I feel good that I'm done. Is it only me? 🙄3

Rant time. Oh boi.
So, a bit of context: I am a university student in Greece and I have a desktop PC with elementary OS on it. When the unis closed down because of Coronavirus, I moved back to my parents', without my PC, only a usb stick with elementary OS installed on it. That was before the lockdown. My parents have a desktop PC and my old laptop, both with Windows rn. I'm only able to work using Linux, so I've been just popping that elementary OS USB stick whenever I needed to work.
All cool and good. Until the usb got full. It was a 16GB one after all. No biggie, I bought a new 64GB one from a well known Greek tech shop along with a webcam my mother needed. It was a LEXAR one.
They fucking took a week to transfer it. As if the closest shop to me was in fucking Germany. For context, the drawing tablet I bought from China the other day only did 2 weeks to come. During this time I could barely use Linux because my USB stick had only some 600MB free.
Ok, wtv I said to myself. I am a patient person after all. I received the USB stick, along with the webcam, in good condition, in their packaging. Alright. I dd'ed everything from the 16GB stick to the 64GB one and then I extend the partition. Everything works flawlessly. And it's faster too.
Next day, I boot up from it again. It boots up good. Nice, time to do some work. I open my editor. And it fucking freezes. The editor is not some VSCode or Atom or any of that heavy shit, it's just elementary OS Code. A very lightweight Gtk3 app. Strangely though, the rest of my OS (the dock autohide, eg.) Seems totally responsive. I try to open another app. No luck. Not even switching TTYs work. Good shit. I force shutdown my PC. I try to boot again from that piece of shit. And guess what! NO BOOT BITCH. Like, fuck you. I boot from my previous 16GB one. Linux won't recognize it. No /dev/sdc like I used to have. Ok, lsusb. Nope, nothing. I disconnect it and reconnect it, and lsusb. An empty entry appears.I run it a couple of times, and the it disappears again. I switch to TTY 2. I get read errors and usb error -71.
And I want to fucking explode
I call back to support for the warranty coverage. I wait for a good 10 minutes and a nice lady picks up. I tell her the issue. She says that the support team will call me for the issue this day it the next day.
I hang up.
It feels like some fucking prank. YOU MOTHERFUCKING TOOK SO LONG TO DELIVER MY SHIT. Not to mention that the shitty courier service they are working with wouldn't deliver the goods to my home because it's slightly out of town. AND NOW YOU ARE DELAYING MY WARRANTY RETURN? HOW THE FLYING FUCK DID YOU BECOME A WELL KNOWN TECH SHOP WITH SUCH SHITTY SERVICE?
IF YOUR BRAINS WERE DYNAMITE YOU WOULDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TO BLOW YOUR NOSES.
YOUR THE SERVICE EQUIVALENT OF A PARTICIPATION AWARD.
Foreigners' view of Greeks suddenly doesn't seem so unreasonable. Yes, we are fucking lazy asses. And we also hate that. We hate each other for that very reason. May this country not live any longer.6 -
Hey guys.
So, got tired of trying to learn on top of the knee (Portuguese expression) and decided to do some courses to get the basics.
Where do you recommend I go?
1. Course must be free
2. Not over 100 hours per course (I'll have 1 to 2 hours a day if I really focus on it)
What I need:
Language (lvl of knowledge)
- Python (know the basics) + kivy (basics)
- Html (good) + css (basics) + javascript (basics)
- node.js (0)
- Jquery ( 0 ) + Django (0)
I know there's lots of good courses out there and lots of dumb stupid ones, care to give your opinion? Thank you5 -
Day 2 of being a Linux (Mint Cinnamon) user. What I like the most is that there's a solution or customisation available for every problem and it's usually straightforward. And let's not forget that you don't have to fight the OS for folder permissions when you're in admin mode.
Migrated my data over from my old drive, installed Steam, got some work done. I like Cinnamon a lot. Need more RAM but that has been years in the making for me.
Just need to get Wine running and find some more cool open source games and tools and I'll be good to go. -
My biggest challenge is moving from framework to framework or language to language.
It takes me a good day or day and a half to get used to it. I'll finally have a eureka moment and figure things out. But until then, it's quite hard and I end up questioning my competence. -
WTF?
TL;DR Integration between software failed so hard I lost 20% of my progress in one hit. Yay! /s
I, being a Fool, signed up to do NaNoWriMo this year (50k words in 30 days of November). I've won it before, and failed it before, and this year was especially stupid as I've got a bigger pile on my plate than usual, what with getting as quickly up to speed on c# and React as I can in prep for starting the new job in December.
I started on a high - 4k on day one, woohoo! To my delight, my writing software Scrivener now had an integration feature to let you update your total word count straight to your account instead of manually entering it. I added my credentials, hit the button, refreshed the page, all updated. So far so good.
Then, on day two, I wrote 1700-ish words. Still good, well ahead of target, took me over 5k. Updated through Scrivener, checked it updated the site, still good.
Then, yesterday, I logged in and added a tiny tiny number of words (brain went blah), and was horrified to discover it had taken 1900 words off my count!
Cue panic as I frantically searched for the missing words, trying to find any evidence of where they'd gone. Gave up after half an hour of futility, bashed out enough to squeak back over 5k, confirmed it had updated.
I'm not unfamiliar with the general stupidity most organisations have on integration - they don't have it, or it's an afterthought, or it's just plain terrible - but this was a ridiculously simple thing to do, I'd have thought? Passing one fucking number and some date/time tracking?
This is what I get for trying to do too many things at once, I guess! -
My mother still doesn't know what I do with my laptop, she thinks I either watch youtube or movies. The last day when I faced a code block and stared at the screen for 12 hours, she finally realised I am either insane or something is driving me nuts.
My Brother thinks it's one of the good decisions I have taken in life. Because he sees my interest when I talk about it to him.
Others think I can fix a broken PC or install softwares for them or do typing to get paid.2 -
!Dev
So the winter break is over and im supposed to be in my uni but no! It is flu time!
Since a human is a machine, and we have certain tools to fix it when it misbehaves lets try to debug that problem! I will tell you a story how
it ended.
Both of my parents return from a trip, dad is horribly sick (windpipe infection) so i isolate myself in my room, put on a mask when i have to be near him and wash my hands 3 times i leave my room.
Nope that didnt fucking work, the next day i get flu symptoms(high temp, fatigue, musle and joint pain)
Nothing too bad i can live with it, so i took paracetamol and called it a day.
But im still pissed at my dad for being a fucking idiot and walking everywhere in the house coughing everywhere...
The next day (yesterday)
Took paracetamol again but this time i got a stuffed and runny nose... So i take nasal decongestants, and... they dont work at all...
Today
I wake up with stuffy and cloged nose again. Aparently those nasal drugs i have been taking only make your nose less runny by drying it up, making it 10000x more difficult to unclog your nose...
like wtf? So if you have a runny and stuffed nose you have to choose which one is better?! Nah i take nasal drugs again and clean my nose with saline water, so far so good!
Also paracetamol started working weaker and weaker... What the hell is wrong with me? Im trying to solve 1 problem and my body finds another one! Curing a human is like coding a app, it will go to shit sooner or later.12 -
I currently don't work over 40 hours a week. When I come to work, everyone else is setup in the "war room," however my monitor and laptop are still at my desk (it's quieter with everyone out in the war room).
I have a good work/life balance, and I'm not alone. One of the other employees also refuses to work over 40 hours or on weekends. He has a PhD and teaches classes on the side. We both did at least participate in a Sunday all-day work session to get something to production.
What I'm worried about is resentment. I have taken zero vacation and was going to bank all my time, then in January take it all at once. I was going to ask for 3 weeks of unpaid on top of that so I could get a month and a half off to go south for the winter.
Even though my output has been really good while I've been working, I have a fear of resentment from others who do put in the extra time. We're all salary and none of them get paid overtime except for a one-time bonus for that Sunday I mentioned.3 -
Hey there everyone, I stay in a hostel which tends to misplace all post, so I always have everything sent home.
And today is the day I finally received everything from the last six months that was couriered to me from home. I'm so excited. Finally got the devrant and WhatsMyIP stickers, the GCI and Twilio tshirts (The Twilio one is just too good) and also some cool handwritten notes. Loved it.
PS. Exams also ended today. So yay!
PPS. Now rooting for the stress ball 😂4 -
A good day at work and I have a few questions about the green light to the meeting tonight but I will be back to normal in 30 of the day and I have been talking to him about refund my money laundering problems (everything was written by the keyboard autocomplete) 🤔1

The level of stupid is too damned high.
Friends asked me to help him fix a few bugs on a website, i have seen some interesting things in my day, but if I ever met the dev who built this site, throwing him off the empire state building would be a kindness.
For some unknown effing reason, this blithering moron thought it a good idea that the logo only appears when the users are logged in, not only that, but touching the hamburger menu button ALSO only works if logged in, at least the twat waddle could have hidden it way, but no, just makes it non-functional.
IDIOT. -
I plan in doing some minor Android app development for a side project when my exams are over (which is in two weeks, yay), but other than using Android on day-to-day basis I'm a total n00b when it comes to development.
I want to write a little app that can communicate with a BLE device. It should encrypt said communication.
I know some python and thought about using Kivy as a frontend since it's cross platform compatible (perhaps I'll make a Linux client, too). But I have no idea whether that's a good idea. Do I absolutely need Java? D:
So - where does one start? Tutorials/books welcome.7 -
I'd like to one day be as good as my tutors or my better half.
Overseeing research code and developing it further with very little documentation seems like a very precious skill to me. They have my respect for that.
That would also involve getting a phd.
I feel so clueless sometimes but apperently I'm a fighter, so let's keep goin and trying :) -
Fuck... I hate these moments. Yesterday I received a new project from one of my customers... this is great, but now is 4am and I can't stop to think a concept to how implement it. I know that this will bring also a lot of money but really, I hate when I have to think also the night. Today I've school and it will be a fucking day. I can't stop to think a good concept and a connection between elements. Sorry I am just frustrated3

Today I visited a friend at work because he needed my help. He has to use WordPress.
I think I have collected frustration within 5 minutes than I would have when working a whole day with plain PHP.
I told him to take a look at laravel when working on personal projects/webpages.
Can I consider myself to be a good friend -
I feel that people give more importance to good portfolios and projects rather than college degrees in this day and age. I've come across many professionals (in different fields) who are self taught and who I feel have a deeper understanding that others who have degrees or Ph.D s. Does one still necessarily need to go to uni to get employed?2

Its not effecting but definitely its weird one day i recieved a good morning message from my fiance,
I was working. Took time to read the message and i have no idea what I'm doing i almost sent her the message,
' print_r("goo '
Then i stoped removed the print and replied her 😆 -
The life of a normal person is like waking up every day with a zero on the scale of suffering. You did something good — here are -20 points to that scale. Something bad happened — well, here are +10 points. Being a bipolar person, my life is like beginning every day with +500 suffer points. Every day is a devastating uphill battle to just break even.
Why live then?
You can't win. If you have a healthy sleep schedule, do sports and eat healthy, it's still +500 every day. One mistake like fucking up your sleep schedule — boom, you now start at +700.
In Japan, a new breakthrough in psychiatry is happening as they were able to tie bipolar disorder to a HHV6 herpesvirus messing up the operation of Parkinje cells in human brain, unreachable to the immune system because of blood-brain barrier. A nasal spray treatment is proposed. If successful, bipolar disorder could be cured forever.
Until an actual nasal spray is released, I decided to wait because it's a huge bummer killing myself only some three years before this breakthrough.
But if their experiments will never come to fruition and my conventional therapy will not be successful, I will kill myself.
I don't want to live like this.6 -
People always say thet you should not quit your job before you have the next job lined up, but what if you plan to do freelance? This is my dilemma.
A bit of context (rant).
My current job is my first official job. Small company, VERY HIGH staff turnover rate. I have been here for 2 and a half years. My commute on a good day is < 20 mins, and money is relatively good.
During the last 6 months, all devs above me resigned, which lead to the system maintenance being passed on to the few devs left. Our biggest system is a legacy system (Windows CE), and new clients are actively signed up and new features requested. The codebase is not even worthy of being called spaghetti, changes break every client, I need to wash my hands every couple of minutes. Seriously, I would rather maintain obfuscated code. It is like a bunch of highschoolers wrote the system, though I think they would have done a better job.
Management is nice and understanding, but the state of the codebase is killing the spirits.
I fill my nights and weekends moonlighting to keep my mind off of the 'daymares' at work. I have never been a team player, and thrive on my own. I have been thinking quiting and going full freelance/contract the last couple of months. Should things not work out, I can always go job hunting (see issue in par. 1)2 -
I cant get a JSON object out of my query results!! I have been trying all day and I'm so frustrated and sad. I'm new to JavaScript, AJAX, and JSON. I just want to understand this. I've seen videos, tutorials, but I never get the expected results with jason_encode. And on the client side I don't even know if the request is good since I can't make the JSON object. :(14

This is probably the worst place to start my Rant saga but this is recent (this is one of the last few episodes of a 3 series cluster fuck of a job so you're missing out on all the straws that go into breaking the camels back and making him unaccommodating)
TL;DR I do good work, management dont like me and go out their way to try and fuck up my days
So, lets start, I'm a contractor, got funeral Tuesday, book leave, book WFH for day after.
I leave in 3 weeks, woman who is the CIO's right hand bitch takes me into a room the next day or so in the morning to discuss my WFH day. Leave on tuesday is cool but this WFH day...there's only so long until I'm gone so they want me to stay in for more face-to-face time blah blah blah (considering this woman isn't even part of the project I'm working on anymore because she decided to deflect it onto a underqualified junior with no PM experience)
So I sit there, thinking of all the blood and sweat that I have shed, the mountains I've moved just to be told to move the mountain somewhere else and whether coming in would kill me (in other words im fucking burnt out!!! I have built their GDPR database and app backend single-handedly with no requirements, project managers who can't plan and being chastised for asking for documentation/plan/anything written down and having the CIO who is also the fucking DPO ignore any emails/slack I send him relating to the project and having to keep up with a team of devs....).
So because there was a momentary silence, she decided to fill the gap
"Oh, you've done some good work so far and I wouldn't want you to ruin it all in these last 3 weeks. So just come in on the Wednesday so that we can have you here."
Hmm....yeah...i didn't notice what she had ACTUALLY said there, still thinking about can i be fucked? So she decides to add
"...there's only 3 weeks left, wouldn't want you to burn any bridges. Remember, we still have to give you a reference"
....Okay....shots fired. So i respond
"You saying, if I take a WFH day, you'll give me a bad reference?"
"Noooo no no no, not saying that, just that you've done good work and we wouldn't want you to ruin it"
"With one wfh day?"
"We just want you to come in because the developers might be coming here that week"
"Oh... I hear that...what day?"
"I dunno, it's not been booked yet"
".............................I'll think about it"
"There's nothing to consider"
*Start leaving room* "I'll think about it...."
So cool, obviously, had a think, decide to shoot over an email (or more accurately, a collection of bullets). Which basically said, in devRant translation, "Fuck y'all, I'm WFH on that day, I wish a motherfucker would fuck up my reference, we can go that way if you want it. *snaps fingers* I. WISH. YOU. WOULD! "
Woman says "I wasn't threatening you, was just saying...dont ruin your last 3 weeks, wouldn't want you to burn any bridges and that we still have to give you a reference"
What kind of Godfather comment is that?
Come in today, the CIO, who is a prick who don't like me for whatever reason, sends me long email trying to disrespect me and in the midst says "I’m sorry that you have chosen to react like this, I’m sure that [my bitch] was conveying a position that your last three weeks of contract are crucial for a smooth handover. I have made the decision to not require you to work from home on Wednesday. I understand you are on leave on Tuesday and therefore this is now extended to include Wednesday. I look forward to seeing you back in the office on Thursday. I hope this will make the situation better for all parties."
.................................thought you lot needed me in the office to ensure a smooth handover................logic..........people.............where the fuck do you get yours from!?!?!?!? All this just so they can say "We made the decision at the end " -
Good people of devRant, hear me! Today is a proud day, a day of happiness, peace, and prosperity!
Theatrical opening lines aside, I need your help. I have finally completed the setup for one of my long ongoing projects and need some input from experienced developers of any kind. I've recently started a blog focused around building a community for people who want to learn more about all engineering disciplines or want to see if they would like being an engineer. The majority of the content will be posts about various topics that relate to either specific disciplines or engineering as a whole, and cool projects you can do to work out what is fun to you.
HackTheWorld.io is the URL and I'd welcome any feedback you can give, from design to development. I used the hexo framework, which is a static html blog generator that I then upload to a web host via FTP. Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas form posts on the site, feel free to leave those as well. I've got a few I'm writing now that will hopefully help some people out there.1 -
Any Irish people here?
I’m planning to move to Ireland in the next six months, probably somewhere near cork.
Currently I’m living in Switzerland but I’m actually german.
However, I have two major concerns:
1) my English is good but not that good. It’s probably a bit better than the German average but still far from fluent. I think in the first months it might be difficult to communicate in English all day long in the office.
Did you have any coworkers or friends who moved there from a non-native English speaking country? How did they do? Did the company have problems with being patient with those people?
2) how hard is it to find a job as a java developer with 7+y experience considering #1?
Bonus question: what do you guys actually think about Germans, am I welcome? :)12 -
One company was looking for a developer, so they found my FB profile (yeah, Facebook). They scan my profile and contact me via Messenger and offer me a job. At the same time my previous company was in financial crisis and I'm the only staff left, so I felt so bored.
I give them a visit, then, voila, today is my first day there. Despite a bit far from my home, but it have wonderful workplace and apply good development practices. I'm comfortable here thank God. :)2 -
spent all day finishing up a feature that i did not want to do at all and think its not the time for it...
after 5 hours of coding & debugging i finally made the PR, took the rest of the day off, felt happy i got rid of that task along with the nagging of the PM. life was good.
At 8 PM, some test i never heard of failed, my branch was the issue and it got reverted and now ill have to work on it again on Monday to fix it. fuck my life. -
If I weren't a dev I'd be doing IT support.
Back in 2018 when I was doing level 1 support as part of an internal IT call center, I applied for two jobs elsewhere in the same company, one doing level 2 support and the other in a different department doing cloud infrastructure engineering or whatever they're calling it now. I almost took the support job because the cloud job was really dragging their feet with my final interview with my boss-to-be.
I probably should have taken that as a sign of things to come, since it ended up being such a pain to work for him until our team got moved under a new manager.
The support team starts pressuring me for an answer and I eventually fire off an email to the cloud guys saying, "I already have a job offer and I can't delay any longer. If I can't be interviewed soon then I will have to withdraw my application."
Got my interview the next day, and he made the offer the same day. Turned out to be a very good choice in the long run, but man were the first couple years full of massive frustrations. -
So i just saved myself like a day of work.
My boss wanted me to make a new endpoint for a webpage I'm working. Ok, spend yesterday afternoon planning it out.
Come in this morning, ready to write it. Look through our api docs. Turns out we have almost the exact endpoint i need, minus 1 simple field. Add the field (1 line of code).
Everything is looking good, I'm a day ahead of where i planned to be. I just wish my boss had told me of the endpoint earlier.
Planning and good docs pay off. -
Not really a dev rant, more of a "home tech support" kind of rant but I guess a lot of devs will relate...
So I was looking at building myself a little storage server, mostly for backups and stuff. This led to the fail of this rant: I thought it would be a good idea to convince my father to switch from using a ton of USB HDDs to get himself a NAS.
This is where I didn't think things through...
The only place he was able to set up the NAS is in the living room. Now I have to use my noise cancelling headphones all day just to not have to hear those HDDs rumbling around in there🤦
(also, I specifically got some super quiet fans for my gaming PC in the living room, but now I realize I could have saved some money and gotten some louder ones, since that NAS is so much louder...)3 -
Am currently handling a very bad code, once you add any feature the app crash and you have to fix the whole POKER application ( as you know poker is a really complicated and everything related to each other). The app crash and every single line of code goes wrong. As well i do barely have a break and am working overtime and during the weekend.
In addition to all of this i have a very complicated design and animation to the chips. Adding to this am the only developer working on this project.
Summing-up am working 10 to 11 hours per day 7 days a week. And still the manager is dissing me as if am not a good developer.
I feel so bad, i cant describe how am currently feeling.
So guys do you believe handling a very bad code might reflect your coding skills ?3 -
Soo, lets talk about deadlines and how often I come in trouble when there is one near. This week I have (had) three. So I had a lot of problems this week.
But, after all today was a really good day.
I deleted an production database, fucked up my laravel migrations and tomorrow we have to deploy another application. The app is still in development and the site isn´t finished yet.
Friday I need to launch another webapplication. Because I don't want to deploy webapps and apps on friday and I go snowboarding next week, I somehow convinced my client to launch it next week. He agreed with me, so that's a burden off my shoulder. And I'll have an extra day for fixing the last bugs.
Today I worked really hard and almost finished the last application. So I think after all I'll somehow manage it.1 -
Ups and downs in devLand.
Day started with a meeting with one client. Guys, getting told "thank you" and "I appreciate your help" feels so good. Nothing could bring me down.
Then I get an asshole making the same request that we already went over -__-
Seriously, how many emails do I have to send. Sigh. -
These goddamn fuckers who every week spam people because their CI or code is broken. Apparently it's more important than other projects. Douchenuggets send an email and CCs the whole department and all the bosses and basically says "It's all broken, the whole company needs to work on this asap, it's possibly x other person's fault".
Then when you try to troubleshoot it because bosses want it fixed, the dumb pieces of fuck made a bug in their code that they could have easily fixed if they took the time to troubleshoot themselves instead of panicking like jackasses. Or better, have good tests and actual error handling.
I swear some day I am gonna get into a fistfight I started because of this bullshit. -
I want to rant.
I don't have anything to be mad at. And that's what's making me mad.
My job's going well. I am making good money, more and more each year. My health's good. I have a good body. I get laid every now and then. I enjoy being single.
And yet it's making me mad and makes me feel empty, for some reason. And every day it's growing in size too.8 -
When he lied about my words and tried to blame me for everything. He is a master of dark psychology, he made the entire department went crazy arguing about something that don't even matter at the time.
He constantly play victim card in every situation. I argued with him that day.
(Actually I shouldn't do that , I should have ask him "are you good" and try to be empathetic to him because we know indeed that he need help. He crave for attentions.)3 -
I really value the skills, experience and time of my brothers and sisters here at Devrant. So I ask questions sparingly.
What is a really good website sketch/blueprint software that I can use to collaborate with non-techie humans.
Thank you for your time.
Have a great day fellow devranters.3 -
Anyone here tried dotnet Blazor yet? seems interesting thus far. I have been toying with it for a good portion of the day and I've got to say that thus far I like what I see.4

TL;DR Looking to build a tower. Starting as a web dev machine but then home cinema and then maybe gaming rig that works well with Linux.
Firstly really it will be a web dev machine as that is my day job, but later I'd like to
- home entertainment theatre
- probably gaming
- possibly comp sci stuff
Initial budget is somewhere at £800, I think I have a 500 watt psu already, i do kind of want to build my own case to save money, but might be an intense challenge.
So don't know whether to buy a low budget gfx card at first, or whether the on board gfx of a good motherboard will be good enough.
Definitely AMD / ATI as Linux (screw you Nvidia).
I'm thinking ATX form factor, annoyingly I have a micro-atx case but that make it difficult to upgrade so much.
I'm pretty clueless really, I just want something that will run seamless with Linux.
Thanks for any help ranters.4 -
So I've been getting a lot of attention from various companies ranging from small tech start ups, to big established companies. I've had a lot of interviews that all went really well! So some weeks passed, and I have no feed back from any companies, so I proceed. I eventually get an offer from one company that is really good. They day i accepted it, I received about 4 other offers from all the other companies! And I got about 5 interviews to now decline! Murphy's law at is cruellest!1

"A good day starts with a good shitting"
So you can plan your day and even think about some problems you have with the code -
I have wanted to be a web designer, studied multimedia design, and have always done some code of my own because I couldn't pay anyone to code my projects. After finishing my degree I was a unemployed and couldn't even get an internship. One day a friend asked me to code a project for his agency because he couldn't find anyone on such short notice. I did it in a weekend and got some good money for it. That's when I realised there was a chance I could be a dev instead of a designer. Started to learn more, moved to London, and never even wished I went back to design.2

I bought the new dell xps15 57 days ago and now it’s ducked (pun intended).
Last week the screen stopped working. I powered off and back on. Then I get a cpu failure light sequence.
I call dell. To my surprise they have given me next day support for free. The guy comes the next day.
He says he will come between 4-6pm. at 615pm he phones me and says he will be late. I hang out at work to wait for him.
Finally at 730pm he comes and doesn’t have a screwdriver for the laptop. So he leaves to go buy one. 8pm he comes back. It takes him an hour to replace the motherboard by which time I just want to check it works and then go home. It seems good and we both leave the dark office at 930pm.
The next day I notice the sound isn’t working. He also hasn’t closed the laptop properly and there is a dent on the right hand side.
Despite dell giving me next day support it takes a week for them to come back with a solution.
I now have to send it off to them and I’ll be a week without the laptop...
It was incredible when it was working. But laptops aren’t great when they don’t work!
Perhaps I should have got a Mac...4 -
attempt neater/cleaner implementation, doesn't work
attempt ugly implementation, it works
maybe one day i'll learn how to write good typescript and react
easier to throw the args around than try to figure out the correct syntax to pass a function to a child component, or not have a react hook closest to where it gets used? -
we have spent all the day moving a ton of stocks from a warehouse to another .. it was a good break from coding :)1

(I am not a native english speaker so please excuse any mistakes I make while writing this)
I know, during an internship, its good to see all different sides of the job and of course QA is one of them. Its definately good to know as a dev later how QA works, I can see that. But why the F U C K do I have to test the same 3 pages (not websites, PAGES) since 5 days for 8 hours a day even though NOTHING CHANGES?! The page doesn't get updated, I am just sitting there clicking around and wasting my time I could use to learn more PHP or jQuery or WTFEver. But no! I have to sit there for hours and hours, doing nothing but staring at a page where I already tested literally anything that can be tested 4 days ago. If you don't have a good task for me over there in QA, then STOP WASTING MY FUCKING TIME instead of forcing me to continue testing this stupid website even though testing already completed a few days ago!!! I don't even have Test Cases to follow, its just “yea look at this page and click around is something is broken“ for 5 days. There is nothing broken, your fucking website works fine. And now STOP WASTING MY TIME!!!!6 -
Good times: Migrating a Jenkins build pipeline patched together out of groovy, python, bash, awk, perl scripts and God knows what else since I have only scratched the surface so far, from Maven to Gradle while not breaking day-to-day builds, integrations and deployments of features, hotfixes and releases. I'm actually enjoying the challenge but it's taking forever due to several issues:
- Jenkins breaks/hangs randomly because it's Jenkins
- Gradle can't handle sets of version ranges but Maven can
- Maven can't handle Gradle style version ranges
- Gradle doesn't have a concept of parent poms, you need to write a plugin and apply stuff programmatically. But plug-ins being part of the buildscript{} don't fall under depency management rules
- Meme incompatibility issues of BSD vs GNU versions of CLI tools like sed, grep etc1 -
The feeling you get when you have a momentary lapse of a good idea for a project
Spent the entired day writing the code for it, and when you run it to see how it's coming together.. You get 0 Errors *Orgasmic moans*
but then you thought of something add and well.. it fucked everything up!1 -

Back when i was in college, I developed a RAT. Best 4 months of programming.
It was time to test it. so I got couple of friends who were very good at getting good grades but knows nothing about programming or how computer stuff works.
So I got into their PCs. GOD, from that day onwards I didn't have to do anything except to change the name on the assignments. -
Worst enterprise software experience... I was fresh out of college, and needed money. I was working in a call center, fielding IT helpdesk calls for a major US telecom company, who had just acquired a competitor. One day I got to work and about ten of us were given a new desk, new phone number, an an email address at the newly acquired company. My manager said to us "We have no clue how any of their proprietary systems work, what servers they run on, or how to login to them. Your phones are ringing, make sure you take good notes so the Tier-1s can help out next week. Good luck."
Trial by shit-storm fire, all while trying to convince the caller that yes, I did know what I was talking about. It was a lot of cold calling random employees whose job title in the corporate directory looked even remotely close to somebody I could escalate a ticket to. They didn't use the same ticketing system we used, so it was a lot of copy/pasting between two ticketing systems. To this day, I still have no clue what happened to their original call center staff. I'm sure they must have had one, but it seemingly just dissolved overnight.
That job was the springboard to my development career. I left for a gig in software helpdesk, then to quality assurance, automated testing, and now I'm a senior DevOps engineer. It was worth it. -
Days like these are a perfect fucking opportunity for corporations to spam your mail and feed you with friendshit and then help you help them with click bait.
P.S Friendship is for decades not a day. Now can we have a good Sunday lunch? Enough of this bullshit.2 -
A team in our company has spent a few weeks building an application where we would pick what days we are remote and where we are going to work.
Now today, manager decided that on top of regularly updating that remote schedule we’d also have to ANNOUNCE in a channel on Teams that we’re remote on that day………. Supposedly for good moods and work life, this is such a waste of time I can’t even….
I should complete that the application let’s you see if anyone in the company is remote and where they can be found 🙄3 -
The jurrasic - the one who only know vb6, giving us photo copied source code to study(on our own) instead of teaching it himself. Exam? Well fuck it he just hand us a photocopy of codes that we have to convert to digital and compile. I dont know how he grade us either.
The forgetful - she give us new activities every period..I can't count how many times she said "lets continue next day" and the number of folders of our unfinished activities in my classroom pc.
The good one - yes finally we have one only to be replaced by the jurrasic due to some conflict. -
So basically
-I have a project to finish due next week from an interview i had and i mentioned that i want a server side role, i am more of a PHP & MySQL (laravel).
-Also told them i am not very good at the front end
-So good so far
-They gave me the requirements
-BUILD A FU##ING website using
{
- BOOTSTRAP AND WORDPRESS
}
two let's call them tools i have NEVER used and also mentioned that
So here i am having my fking pulse over 100 trying to damn figure out how this bs works.
End my suffering
Have a nice day!!8 -
Sometimes, I feel my school is a prison.
I'm sitting there, 8-10 hours per day, learnin' things I already know, and all I can do is sitting quiet to `don't disturb during the lesson`. I can't even use my laptop.
But, school also is nice in some ways, my principal allowed me to run a Hacktoberfest event in my school, make kinda radio in our school and make an app for our SmartTV (yep, we have a TV in school) to show weather, changes in lesson plans etc.
But still, I really feel this is the prison. One more year, and I'll finish this shit and go...to another school because `you need to graduate to do anything in your life`. Btw, do ya know any good ways how to become CTO or COO one day? Just asking. Greetings, I hate my school, have a nice day.10 -

Suggestions for a good mechanical keyboard < $100.
I got a very cheap basic one for my home office and it's amazing to type on! It's very loud so I don't want to bring it to work and it was pretty cheap so I'm not sure how it will hold up to 8-10 hours of programming a day. I'd like to get one for the office, as a treat to myself for my promotion, but most of the suggestions I've gotten so far have been to drop $160 on Das Keyboard. I'd love to but I can't drop that much on a keyboard now.9 -
How is everyone handling their day job lately? I'm feeling pretty safe about my position, but my day-to-day is definitely suffering as my mind wanders off.
Cost of living crisis, trying to have a social life, impending fatherhood, all while trying to do good work and improve my knowledge. Not easy.3 -
this is not a rant.. more like the opposite of rant.. I want to share my overwhelming joy.. that is.. finally receiving my preview for AWS EFS!!!!! I must have applied for this about 8 times! And only today, do I get my prayers answered! Today is going to be a good day! :D2

Do any of you feel you have never achieved anything in life? I am kind of feeling that :(
I want to accomplish something. Anything that i could be proud of or be happy about . I sometimes look into my past and just feel sad.
I guess I won't find a lot people like me. Everyone has something to be proud of.
Someone might have a good school percentage, a good college, a non academic prize in debate or drama, a good score in some online platform, a love partner , good physique, a nice app with 10k+ installs , a popular blog or other talents. I got none of those :/
Everyone is proud of something. How can i be proud of anything ? It's so frustrating every time i open my mouth to give opinion about anything, because i am 21 and i have lived my whole life just... Living
Because most of the time these achievements later turn to be not much. There is always an option to "just pass" or "submit the assignment late" or "take a smaller package" or simply be average.
No one asks high school marks in any interview now , a guy with 70% and a guy with 95 % are considered equal.
But at that time, i just spent the day as my usual when the results came out and my friend with 95% got a new bike , and had his parents and relatives congratulate him all day. I don't worry of my marks, but now 4 years later he might have a happy moment to look back but i don't :/4 -

I submitted my first pull request 2 days ago and guess what maintainer closed the issue without accepting and merging my request even 1 day ago I have commented on the issue comment box that I have a pull request please accept.
Not feeling good, I was thinking the hardest task is to find an issue we can contribute to, but the hardest task is, which we can't have control in and that is merging the pull request. -
Teaming up with a marketing firm looking for a developer. The owner was showing me a couple samples of Craigslist postings that he gets sent every day by a filter he has set up so that I can provide some feedback on what would be a good fit.
Second listing we pull up looks reasonably good at first, then I notice this bit at the bottom:
“Must be available to do design review calls where we’re both on the phone, I tell you what needs to be changed, and you do it on the spot.”
Politely but firmly let my new friend know that that right there was a big red flag saying to move on.
Anyone else have helpful criteria when trolling these kinds of postings? -
Today was my first day at work, as an intern. I'm doing it as a volunteer though. My school is not accept internship before passing the 3rd year... I have a mixed feelings about this. Like am I doing good working as a volunteer or will it be ok, because there are some other interns too, and as you can guess, they've already assigned some works before I accepted. Should I go for it, or leaving and waiting next year and gain more knowledge before the job ?1

Discus always before how much ur client have to pay! Worked round 3hrs each day on a range of 6 weeks (6d each week) on a gameproject. After i did my work i requested my money - all i got were 50€! Just fifty fucking euros for so many time! Good that the retards never got it launched because my client (is even a dev) never finished his work or whatever.
PS: Didnt got paid in BTC 🤐
PPS: it was about 2,5yrs ago 😎 -
At my boarding school the admins are too bad : all the 5 min the internet go out for 30s because of overload (when too many computers are downloading) and now when we must work the internet go out so we can't work....
Windows says that the proxy is not responding so it's again a big overload and the internet came back the next day thank of reboot ...
This system is soooo shity.....
And my school want to have a good image of technology....... WOW ! -
Today my day was spent getting bent over by ASP.NET (Core) and for some of it I for some reason for the fucking life of me could not get to work.
And even though I didn’t end the day on a good note in the project, I DID make some small progress, the problem I ran across was that I wasn’t inserting the ID into the database, but the real problem is that I tried to have the database generate the ID itself and increment it, but that didn’t work out so I’m stuck and I have no clue what I should do and I tried to manually set it too for one case but even that resulted in error, so 🤷🏻♂️
Feeling very intimidated while doing this. I’m hoping I’ll be able to write code that can actually scale and handle production.
That’s been my day.14 -
Why isn't already a Font Awesome plugin for VSCode where you can look up icons by keywords like in their website?
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that hard to make AND it would be pretty useful.
Yes, I would make it if I knew how.
Yes, I hope I can one day make it but I have been running on 5.5 hours of sleep for the last month. Not good for someone used to around 7.2 -
To not be too emotionally attached to stuff. At the end of the day, all good things come to an end. Also, not to be 100% loyal. That could squeeze more effort out of you at the cost of your efficiency. Have a life, live it.

I been teaching someone python for a few day with 2-3 hour each day. It has been very pleasant to teach him programming since he have a goal in mind. He already know what kind of program we wanted to build.
He is a novice and not familiar with programming. It have been a good chance to see how the novice look at the python. I been given a chance to ask the answer like
"Why do we throw exception?" ,
"Why do we put define function at the top of the file and not at __main__?"
"Why do I need to use constructor?" ,
"Why should I call parent constructor in the child constructor?"
Here is the main question.
I have been wondering "should I teach him multi inheritance and the diamond problem?" I haven't been using multi inheritance for a while other than the exercise I done when I started programming and cannot think of the situation to use multi inheritance. I know in other language we use multi inheritance (kind of) regularly by extending multiple interface. I wanted to ask if multi inheritance is common in python.
Another question I have is how should I introduce him to gui programming in a simple manner? I am thinking of introduction him to the gui framework which haved WYSIWYG editor like "Remi"10 -
Best eays to improve database performance?
I have a huge database table with a lot of data, 10+columns and around 5-6million rows and growing. We are thinking about optimisation methods, the data will be frequently accessed, but not in the same ways. even though caching is helping, some initial requests take 6-20secs. What are good ways to improve a relational db performance? The data is date and item based, every item can have some data back from 2016 or older and up to 1000 related rows in each day. Every day new data would be added. Right now working with php.8 -
Have a question about email service providers. Specifically inbox delivery and warmup. Over the years I gathered a ~200k email database of players from my projects. I cleared them by using debounce.io and now I have 100k clean emails. That means I can send a mass newsletter and bounce rate should be good. Now my main question is what email services provider should I use? For email client I thought of setting up sendy.co, for hosting it use sendybay.com and for smtp use pepipost.com But the problem with sendy is that it sends emails without any delay. Like 2-3 emails a second. Is there a difference in terms of inbox delivery and domain reputation wether I send all emails in bulk with sendy or should I try to keep low profile and send lets say 1k a day? I have friends who use amazon ses and they are able to send even 100k a day, given that emails database is cleared(valid working emails) and bounce rate is low.6

Some background:
About 2 months ago, my company wanted to build a micro service that will be used to integrate 3 of our products with external ticketing systems.
So, I was asked to take on this task. Design the service, ensure extendability and universality between our products (all have very different use cases, data models and their own sets of services).
Two weeks of meetings with multiple stakeholders and tech leads. Got the okay by 4-6 people. Built the thing with one other guy in a manner of a week. Stress tested it against one ticketing service that is used in a product my team is developing.
Everyone is happy.
Fast forward to last Thursday night.
“Email from human X”: hey, I extended the shared micro service for ticketing to add support for one of clients ghetto ticketing systems. Review my PR please. P.S. release date is Monday and I am on a personal day on Friday.
I’m thinking. Cool I know this guy. He helped me design this API. He must’ve done good. . . *looks at code* . . . work..... it’s due... Monday? Huh? Personal day? Huh?
So not to shit on the day. He did add much needed support for bear tokens and generalized some of the environment variables. Cleaned up some code. But.... big no no no...
The original code was written with a factory pattern in mind. The solution is supposed to handle communication to multiple 3rd parties, but using the same interfaces.
What did this guy do wrong? Well other than the fact that he basically put me in a spot where if I reject his code, it will look like I’m blocking progress on his code...
His “implementation” is literally copy-paste the entire class. Add 3 be urls to his specific implementation of the API.
Now we have
POST /ticket
PUT /ticket
POST /ticket-scripted
PUT /ticket-scripted
POST /callback
The latter 3 are his additions... only the last one should have been added in reality... why not just add a type to the payload of the post/put? Is he expecting us to write new endpoints for every damn integration? At this rate we might as well not have this component...
But seriously this cheeses me... especially since Monday is my day off! So not only do I have to reject this code. I also have to have a call now with him on my fucking day off!!!!

I just pulled an all-nighter for some homework for grad school with a good friend and now I have 2 deployments today. Guess I can come off my coffee hiatus because I need it! This day is going to long unlike my patience.

My senior software engineer keeps telling me my tasks are trivial but doesn’t explain why they are trivial. Sometimes I feel like I’m wasting my time. I find it increasingly difficult to talk to him because I don’t feel like I’m doing a good job. I know everyone learns at their own pace and I am learning new things and concepts every day. But I don’t feel like I’m learning well or fast enough.
Anyone have any communication advice?6 -
Happy Late Halloween! what did you guys do?
what im doing is:
-looking at my backpack full of candy
-Currently Raising my blood sugar
-Some reason the last quote allows me to find errors better
-There are 2 huge wasps in my room flying around with the door closed
-Working on a python game
i might crash but i better kill the wasps before they land on me i hope everyone had a good time and didn't have to deal with anything during a spooky day -
I think I may have just had a bit of an epiphany...
Algorithms and Data Structures are sort of like libraries and frameworks.
JS is probably the easiest example since npm has a lot of libraries.
For most cases, underscore.each and lodash.each $.each achieve pretty much the same thing except one maybe better in certain cases.
And data structures are sort of like Angular, React, Electron, ReactNative. Each has its own purpose or style and are good for solving certain types of problems?
So day-to-day you don't really care what Sort() algo you use.. unless you really need to perfoarmance tune it for a specific case.
And data structures, depending on the type of problem you have, one is easier to work/think about the problem in although not examply... Usually have to use a few of them at once.
How is this going to help me in interviews... I'm not sure... other than reconfirming that knowing specific implementations of Sort and Trees is usually BS... most of the time just need to know you should Sort or use a Tree... -
XCode is so terrible. I have to force quit it several times a day in so many use cases. I wonder why Apple cares so little about us developers. I dream with the day they’ll make XCode a good IDE. Everytime I run maps on the simulator my CPU goes to 700% and every time I checkout a branch, the thing hangs there so I have to forcf quit it 😠😫

What's the general consensus on the forced training courses? We now have a 3rd party arranging a course about FooBar and our managers though it was a great idea for everyone in my team to participate. Since...well you don't know when you need FooBar, so it's good to learn it now! And any education is only good. Makes employees smarter.
Except that I am not interested on FooBar. I don't use it. I can google it when I need it. I can read a book. I could travel to a 3-day course with 9 hours of straight lecturing per day and 200 slides with 10 second pause between them. But I am dead shit sure that after 30mins you lose the focus and after 1 week you remember nothing.
And everyone who's ever been on any company arranged courses, you know that there's always some guy who already knows everything. So starting from the first second he wants to challenge the trainer. Have a dialogue. Discuss about the problems that he has seen. Noone else cares. So you have 30 people listening to 2 guys debating.
But hey, maybe after 6-12months our company starts using FooBar and then we have a couple of dozen geniuses who have taken that multi-thousand-euro class. Or not.
At least you get a cup of coffee and a sandwich on mornings and afternoons.2 -
This article about the types of legacy code bases you will have to deal with just made my day!
Not only do I have every one it describes but somehow it even made me laugh at thought of each of the std riddled petri dishes of code that I reluctantly maintain... My "Happy Place" is a folder dedicated to reliquary projects I like to look at when I feel sad to lift my spirits and restore hope that one day things will be better.
Do you have any definitions to add or know where to find more? I'm hooked.

Excerpt:
The Reliquary
The reliquary is that one repository full of really good ideas. Clean code. Brilliant algorithms. The OpenID implementation that you optimised until it shone. Classes so beautifully designed and perfectly documented that they’d make a senior architect weep.
You remember the big rewrite? The project that was going to fix everything, only you never worked out how to actually launch the thing, or get any revenue from it? The reliquary is where you’ve preserved it, pickled in revision control like a fabulous museum specimen. A treasury of good code and good ideas; maybe even an entire codebase that was “a couple of weeks” away from shipping before somebody finally looked at the number of critical features the team had somehow forgotten to include and discovered — to everybody’s surprise — that validated XHTML, normalised data models and 95% test coverage are not actually features any of your end users cared about.
Like Buran or the Spruce Goose, the surviving artefacts stand as a testament to the quality of your engineering… and a poignant reminder of just how much fun engineers can have building high-quality stuff that nobody actually wants to use. -
Good morning devRant community, so currently im on my early morning commute to College, and it got me thinking.
So I’m very passionate about programming but i also love playing around with the Stock Markets, Are there Software Engineering positions which work with the markets? I’ve been thinking its called a “Quant” but im not too sure, Also does anyone have any possible experience within the field? What it takes to get in etc?.
I highly appreciate it! Hope you have an amazing day/night. :-)10 -
Which Idea was it to combine C, C++ and Java in one big fucking Project. And who thought that it was a Good Idea to use Eclipse C++ for developing with Java. If the whole Project would have been in Java I could have used the auto Import feature from Eclipse, but if Eclipse doesn't Know that the Java Files are Java Files it doesn't fucking work. So I just had to spent a whole fucking Day compiling the Projects with Maven so that I can write around 100 Lines of Import...
And the best Thing is, a few Weeks ago the Imports existed so a fucking asshole just erased them when he tried to optimize these...
Sometimes I hate this company -
Haven't posted on devrant for quite a while but I need the community's input on a decision I have to make:
I recently graduated from college and I have two job offers: one as SDE 1 from Amazon and another from a small (less than 10 people) but quickly growing start-up. I looked at all the generic pros of cons of joining an established company vs a startup but I am still torn on the decision. Both the companies are offering similar pay, so money's out of the question now.
If anyone from the community has any advice from personal experience (or specific to Amazon), that'd help me a lot.
Have a good day, everyone!4 -
I was having a weird time playing manager because we had none. And the new one kind of sucks and it is too junior for the role. Acting as TL too and had almost no time to code or do PRs. And. Gee. Yesterday I went back to coding after a few months. And I found out that We have a team member that just shits all over the code. Tests that are invalid, basically testing nothing. Methods done apparently for no reason. It took me a good deal of time to sort things thru. And now I'm at a point where I can finally do some reviews. Long day today.1

Good day to all, I’m going to Munich for a month, a car is gentle for rent, maybe I’ll have to drive a hundred kilometers from the city to the suburbs .. I don’t really want to watch the Internet, I don’t believe there is a comment .. just maybe someone can suggest something sensible?5

Earlier this day, I read that Strapi is dropping its support for MongoDB. I was a bit bummed at first, but their reasoning was good and I moved from MongoDB Atlas to CloudSQL.
From that point on my day got so much better: Now my strapi backend is so much faster than before! I cannot believe, that I just got to migrate to SQL. Should have done this a long time before.
All operations are literally 2-3 times as fast as before. Thank you @strapiDevelopers for forcing me to migrate :D -
Does anybody here still use dreamweaver? I used to use it a lot back in the day when I started as a designer, but haven't used it in years, but I noticed the app in our companies adobe subscription plan and have installed it.
Given that we live in an age of VS Code, sublime text and so one, I'm just wondering does anyone still use DW and if so what is it good at?2 -
Update this software?
[Ignore for today]
[Update]
Why cant i have a button that says
[Never ask me again]
And not
[Ask me every day when i open the program]

Wasted a day fighting the breaking changes and new bugs over at Google Cloud Build's GitHub integration (alpha)... I had a good CI/CD flow that is broken now because of the change... anyway, I will switch over to Circle CI... have had enough of alpha bugs for the next few months... Google Cloud Build does have an attractive pricing (free 120 build minutes per day) and a whopping 10 concurrent builds limit... but it is only supported by the community and you don't get a lot of active developers feedbacks...

Hello guys, Did you know how to build a PHP development enviroment for a low spec laptop?
Well, low spec laptop I mean:
CPU: AMD E2 quad Core 1,5
RAM:4 GB
I switched from w10 because it was so laggy, Im currently using Xubuntu
I tested virtual machines bit also it was so laggy too
PD: have a good day :)6 -
The other day i made a rant saying that having an index.js as entry point is misleading, in my opinion. it could have been implemented in so many and better ways but that's what we have because that's what the nodejs creator decided to do.
My previous rant wasn't well seen because everybody was saying that index js it's actually a good thing.
So I started to do some research because I've an important experience in software architecture and i was trying to understand why people couldn't get my point. Fortunately i found that even the creator of node itself regrets his choice to use a file as an entry point for modules and imports. You can have a look at the video, that is also really interesting, here: https://youtu.be/M3BM9TB-8yA2 -
Hello guy who develop the internal library I'm using
Just so you know, no, "idString" is not a cool name for ppl to know what they should use when you have dozens of differents ids.
And no documentation makes it less likeable.
Have a good day, you're making mine being horrible3 -
I just made this up but it seems true
There are only two ways 2 people can disagree about making a decision
One is if a person has more (or less) knowledge about the subject
The other is they both have sufficient information about the factors of the decision, but one person simply values a different set of principles than the other person
Have a good day3 -
my most daring adventure of 24 yrs day -1/3 (this array goes -1,0,1,2,3)
read my previous 2 rants for context. tomorrow the journey is going to start. the organisers dont count that day (aka day 0 ) as its a bus travel night , but i would disagree since am sleeping away from home.
if i survive this i will probably add more comments on this thread about how i felt each day.
currently having the worst thoughts due to every constraint being a variable. have i packed enough? have i packed too much? will there be rain there? will there be sun ? will there be snow? am I prepared for the harsh weathers? its a mountain area and there have been heavy rain in my urban city, what if their is a cloud burst or landslide? am I prepared to run? am i prepared enough for the trek? will my cellphone die? what if my bus is captured by decoits in night? what if am travelling with kidnappers disguised as passengers/ organisers? will they cut my limbs or just ask for ransom? if they are not decoits, are they going to be lovey dovey couples interested in bursting condoms in mountains nd not helping a fella. WILL EVERYTHING GO OKAY? is this the last time am seeing my parents?
fuck fuck fucking fuckak fuck.
the only good thoughts am having is looking at the reels of organisers. theybhave smiling faces, beautiful mountains, people are dancing in buses and having fun in dormitories. can those be me? all i want is my mom to not get a heart attack from this trip.14 -
Start the day feeling blessed and grateful about what you've got around you,
Planning a little the next step that you have to do
Focus on yourself and your attitudes, looking to all the possibilitys with rationality, and try to make a footstep in that direction everyday
Thinking and be positive must to stay on the first position of a good mindset,
Be productive in a constantly way and trust the progress, this is an action than create an algorithm totally in sync with a new good habit for a stabilization of your transition
Start to visualize a clear picture of yourself happy and in peace and print that picture in your head as a personal goal
Write and read as a personal research method
It's a process that we can call art of the water's cup
Consisting in a continuing movement of pouring and filling the glass until the water is totally clear and drinkable
after that you may drink that water a bit every day for knowing exactly the taste of it,
write = pour
read = fill
drink = fix
becomoming like water4 -
Dreaming of a challenging adventure and from sleeping in my very comfortable mint, had some coffee and tried some freshly-picked and good-to-go debian for fun, it was a great morning. Nice logo it has I feel so cool, what a good day to have, a blessing to try things let's sing some praises, hallelujah! But my friend debian's not so friendly even gave me a deadly look --It was a nightmare from installation to even shutting it down, so many versions to install, very limited explanation on internet and terminal doesn't work, crap it's 03:00 and I haven't slept for a while my eyes are shedding pure regret while I am looking for a way out. What is this, after all my training am I still too weak to handle this kind of power, or maybe my friend just need some more persuasion?

Rant.
I hate premade code/libraries fucking fuck some library decisions should be a question criteria for any interview. I would like to know the thought process you involved on why you chose a particular library. Fuuuuuuuuuuccccccckk the frustrations.
Thanks have a good day. :)2 -
Let us not forget that they've killed innocent Americans on this day. NSA staff has been told to leave work early.
If you've only seen it on TV or media, can you really believe it? Same thing goes for COVID. Have you really seen the virus under telescope with your own eyes?
Under this false pretext, 9/11, you and I are treated as terrorists. We've been stripped off our human rights and privacy. But perhaps, is it for the greater good?
Does greater good even exist?
I hope so. It's hard to make any sense out of this carefully planned chaos.
Never lose your questioning nature. Otherwise, you're indifferent from a sheep.32 -
Two words: drink coffee.
Besides that, a good playlist with non-vocal music, and a clear head. If I am excited about some other aspect in my life, I have little desire to code that day. I find it easiest when I start thinking about how to resolve a particular issue.
