Me: Two years, with many projects on my own.
HR: So, you're familiar with Android Studio?
Me: No, I've been using "Paint" to code.37 -

So they were having trouble with the server always being slow and maxed to 100%, so the boss told me when wait times were hitting 5+mins due to server trying to catch up, he complained at me, said if I could get the wait time to 30sec to instant he would raise my pay to 90k a year, then walked away after I agreed, I was quite serious but I don't think he thought I was, so I decided to look over the system, IDK who but they put all the calculations and processing server-side for the CA's on floor then sent the completed view to the CA, so I spent months recreating the entire system except the server only pulled the data needed then the new client would do all the processing on their computer since they weren't doing anything anyways, I did a practice run today as its one of our peak days, wait times went to barely 5secs or "instant" according to CA's, I walked into the office, slapped that hourly report down after just two hours and showed the massive increase in employees production times.
That look on his face...
That look on my face...
That look on my next check...

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in five years working in this company?
(The company shut down after 2 years.)6 -
Like one of those jobs that demand 12 years of experience with Kubernetes (which was released 6 years ago)6
-
Interviewer: So how long did you work at your last job?
Man: 30 years
Interviewer: and how old are you?
Man: 22 years
Interviewer: you're 22 and you have 30 years of experience that's not possible
Man: and you are looking for a junior dev with 5 years of experience4 -
I’m so sorry! No, I do NOT have 9 years experience using this framework that has only been out for 5 years 🙃5
-
If I do a job in 30 minutes it’s because I spent 10 years learning how to do that in 30 minutes. You owe me for the years, not the minutes.12
-
Shutting down my company 😔,
Can't do it anymore, trying to do the best work for shit pay.
Clients haven't paid... Now I doubt I can even find 10 quid literally don't have 10 quid to my name right now 😔.
Burnt myself out ... I can't even concentrate on my work cause I'm stressing on everything...never ending spiral.... 😢
Going to just get a normal job ... Just lucky I have parents to go back to.
Running a dev company... Really amazing when things go well, it's unexplainable in fact but... Devastating when it doesn't 😞
You know when you break up with a girl you've been with for ages... Like how horrific ... That can be... This is literally worse .. I didn't think it was even possible...23 -
LinkedIn: I only have a profile because I like to fuck with recruiters.
"I have 30 years of experience in Java, 15 years in Android, and 49 years in C++"
And I STILL get contacted. Those people DESERVE to be fucked with.3 -
Okay, it just happened to me.
Researching jobs, found one that requires ReactJS 7+ years of experience.

HR: How many years you've been developing on Xamarin ?
Me: Three years, with many side projects
HR: So, you're familiar with C#?
Me: No, I've been coding in "hieroglyphs".9 -
Feeling blessed, left the army after 5 years, 3 deployments, to attend 3 years of computer science school and get a stable lifestyle.
I've got a supporting girlfriend, mentally never felt better, and for the next 3 years, this is my seat and view in class !
Happy coding all, and have a nice day✌️8 -
When I was 10 years old, all kids at my school got access to school emails. The email address book contained everything in my city, like fire department, all pupils of all schools etc. So I decided to "test" the system by sending out a mass email to everyone in the address book (about 3k) with the question "Hi, how are you?".
The sys admins apparently didn't think very far as I got some responses saying like "You have crashed a server in the capital city" and "I have contacted your local IT admin".
So I went to the IT admin and told him the situation. His face turned red of anger and I remember him almost screaming at me.
Who the fuck doesn't set up protection for this and gives out access to 10 year olds? This was 15 years ago, I really hope sys admins are smarter today!6 -
Google just turned 18 years yesterday, cant believe i've been asking inappropriate questions to a minor for al those years

Being an introvert 17-year-old is tough at times :/
Have yet to find someone who shares my interests and has the will to get to truly know me.
Most people just barely scratch the surface and judge for what they see, but after all, I cannot expect any sort of deep relationship to take place with any of my peers.16 -
What a great start to 2019 for me.
Uncles and aunties who don't understand a thing about development critiquing my work and offering their advises and vast wisdom based on their 1 second knowledge.
I almost turned to a psychopath.
Lol.2 -
Drop brother off at a new years party, where he will be until sunrise partying with friends.

an actual recruiter on LinkedIn:

You: Starts something.
You: Compares results to someone who's been doing it for years.
You: Gets discourages.
You: Stops doing it.
You 5 years later: I wish I hadn't stopped.6 -
I think everyone has had at least one of those, thinking something about technology/a certain technology thingy and appearing to be completely wrong years and years later.
In my case: I thought (like 5-8 years ago) that there wouldn't ever be better touchscreens than apple devices had.
Man was I wrong!
Comment yours below :)13 -
The upside of having to go through code you wrote years ago (while mumbling WTFs) is that you realize how far you've come in those years.1

I'm a freelance web developer and I'm only 16 years old, coding since 5 years! Go for your goals, you can do it!5

You shouldn't look for people with 10 years experience. You shouldn't exclude them but the people w/o experience need experience anyways and maybe they bring something fresh to your tables..
I know "designers" who would say they have 10+y.e. but I mean they design websites that to this day, use table layout and oldish looking design language.. (ofc there are examples that state the opposite!)
Measuring people by their years with experience is just silly..9 -
I was looking through UX/UI designer jobs the other day, and then I checked the minimum requirements for it:
"React.js 7+ years of experience"

So I been telling Cox no to upgrading my modem for the past 2 months, my modem works fine, so now last night the modem just stops working, the internet is out and I call support, I tell them the problem and they without even thinking ask what version of modem I have, I tell then gen 2,they then offered a upgrade for free and the old gen 2 ones were not working lately, I reluctantly agreed to swap them for free, so after I got off the phone I was curious, I decided to packet sniff and find all my data is being sent just fine, but once it reaches the Cox main gateway it just drops the packet, I even pinged the DNS and it responded fine, turns out they just shut my connection off and basically forced me to upgrade to their gen 3 enhanced Wi-Fi bullshit8

Today I navigate the devRant oceans for the 157,680,000 second.
Who knew this place would be still pumping some of the greatest devs I've come to appreciate so many years later, it's not the vibrant place it once was, but it's still full of hidden gems.1 -
After 10 years of development, and 7 years of being happily married, I'm in love again... With Unit Testing.

Job posts that look for experience in everything! Experience in large scale enterprise kubernetes bullshit! What the fuck is kubernetes, a Greek god?? 4 plus years experience in aws! 5 years experience in cloud infrastructure scaling! 5 years experience in working with stakeholders and collaborating UX design! 5 years experience in React Native! 5 years experience in noSQL! 5 years experience in firebase! 5 years experience in graphics design! 5 years experience in node CSS! And every javascript known to mankind! I would love to meet this legendary developer that every company seems to want! Sick of these ads that ask for god level experience in every development role or tech. It’s like they’re hiring one developer to write their entire system from scratch which would obviously require godly expertise in front back and every fucking end there is to fucking build10

My colleague and I have 12 years of college and 10 years of experience between us. Can't figure out how to connect a fucking phone headset.2

On highschool I took a special major in which we learned various computer and mathematics skills such as neural networks, fractals, etc.
One of the teachers there, which for me was also a mentor, is a physician. He taught us python which he didn't know very well (he wasn't that bad either) and science which was his true passion.
My end project was to try to predict stocks market using a simple neural network and daily graphs of 50 NSDQ companies. The result reached 51% prediction on average which was awful, but I couldn't forget the happinness and curiosity working on this project made me feel.
Now, 5 years later, I have a Bsc and finishing a Msc in Computer Science, and would sincerely want to thank this mentor for giving me the guts and will to accomplish this.7 -
They:Why didn't you come up with this solution 2 years ago?
Me: The framework on which the new solution is proposed DID NOT exist 2 years ago.

**My Resume** : Worked with JavaScript and .NET for the last 3 years ... have an Associates degree...more things
**Recruiter**
You look like you'd be a great fit for this position. We require a Bachelors degree, but we're willing to take 4 years progressive experience in lieu of each year of schooling.
**First**
4 YEARS of experience for EACH YEAR of school?
**Me**
I guess basic reading and math aren't required to be a job recruiter? Man...Only 5 more years and I'll be able to see how my skills as a developer with 8 years of professional experience will go over as an Entry level developer!1 -

Will next 10 years will be as interesting in security like last decade ?8 -
Teaching my homeschooled son about prime numbers, which of course means we need to also teach prime number determination in Python (his coding language of choice), when leads to a discussion of processing power, and a newly rented cloud server over at digital ocean, and a search of prime number search optimizations, questioning if python is the right language, more performance optimizations, crap, the metrics I added are slowing this down, so feature flags to toggle off the metrics, crap, I actually have a real job I need to get back to. Oooh, I'm up to prime numbers in two millions, and , oh, I really should run that ssh session in screen so it keeps running if I close my laptop. I could make this a service and let it run in the background. I bet there's a library for this. He's only 9. We've already talked about encryption and the need to find large prime numbers.3

Twenty years.
For twenty years I've used vim almost exclusively, and only now have I learned about buffers and registers. It feels like wasted years, but also it feels like a gift.6 -

Me: Because I need to determine behavior of why old program works with data that new program does not.

Me: Okay.
Boss: Go write new fun code, not work on old shit.

Twenty years ago today (I double-checked) my father bought me the Liberty Basic compiler for my 8th birthday, marking what I consider my first foray into programming.
Thanks to that, I'm a tired and moderately happy 50 year old man.

Senior Developer is a title that you get from working at the same company for over 5 years but you don't learn anything new within those 5 years.
Close your damn divs!!!3 -
< 1 year of professional software experience - company: there's too many of you, come back when you have 3 years experience
3 years experience - company: those entry levels have now gotten 3 years experience just like you and now there's too many of you, come back with 7 years experience
7 years - company: too many of you, come back with 20 years
20 years - you: create sentient AI and order it to destroy the company. AI: sorry, I'm looking for an owner with 100 years experience, sorry.

A question here reminded me of how websites were made long ago. Frames! Remember those little jewels? <frameset> and <iframe>, I still remember them. Man, even then it felt terribly wrong to use them. I remember using them to create web pages with header and side bar.
The only alternative was using <tables>, which, well, we know how they ended up. Frames today have been silently forgotten, but tables have been loudly hated for many years!
Ahhh, those were the times. So much has happened since then.
(Is "website" still a word today, btw?)7 -
Smashing on the keyboard
with 3 screens infront of my face
i spot a nasty bug,

I called their office for aid,
But found no one is there to be
Of any aid to my sorry ass,
Now i have to debug the whole thing,
Oh,
Documenting code
Documenting code
Why didnt you document the damn thing
At least tell me you left some comments
To help debug thy algo tree

During my university days, we had a basic programming quiz. One of the questions is to "write a program that will determine if a number is even or not".
An annoying seatmate asked me silently if his answer is correct. Then I saw his window:
=========================
> Enter an even number: 10
> The number is even.
=========================
I told him it's correct.
After the test his answer is marked as wrong.
"You told me it's correct!", he said to me.
I approached the professor, and told him that his answer is correct.
"What if I enter 3?", professor said.
I told him, "User Error". -
Bloody mother fucking jesus christ....
It's working.
Sometimes I really wish I had the gift to be creative and to e.g. draw a (metaphoric) image of the shit I had to fix and how it felt to fix it.
It's sad not being able to share stuff in a way everyone can understand it :/
I uncludged the last bits of the networking / loadbalancer / craptastic network.
The whole chart that includes most of the associations / information for the network fits easily on a A2 paper. Internal only.
Just migration of a few remaining servers to Proxmox and a large MySQL to Postgres migration outstanding....
1.75 years and it's the first large milestone achieved. Large milestone as in it will not be a total clusterfuck anymore.
Still a lot of stuff to do...
But down to one major OS, Debian, for everything (container / VMs)... only LTS supported versions for services...
No more stuff that's so old it's near fossil state. We stillhad Ubuntu 12.04 running... :) ;) And XenServer is nearly gone...
Too many feels. Too many brain poofs. And way too much pain.1 -

Once a guy was not able to apply for a software company coz it required 4+ years of experience in a particular API.
The problem was that he had only 2 years of experience as he himself had developed that API. 😜
It's high time that we rethink the equation " Years of experience == Skill"
Do comment your opinion.6 -
From those of you who are already working fulltime/have experience with applying for jobs. I am currently writing my CV and I am not sure how I can mention my programming knowledge in an adequate way. By years of experience or different?10

i finally get rid off that over-the-top dependency on Zend\Config in upwork/phystrix
The Pull-Request is on it's way:

I hope it will be merged soon into the master branch -

Fucking done, it works, signed the last version and pushed to client, client loved it, just what he wanted, paid out contract then turned around and asked me to setup his server for one day with no further expectations and an extra 250, said sure don't mind, as I am setting shit up I decided to test if his business isp really blocks tcp, guess what? NOPE IT WORKS JUSY FUXKIJG FINE AND I COILD HAVE KUST RIPPED A PREMADE CORE AND GOT PAID AND SET IT UP AND HE WOULD NEVER know, but maybe theirs some weird circumstances that require the core to be made only with udp, so after I was done I asked why only udp if his line allowed tcp? Requirements maybe? NOPE HE JUST DOSENT UNDERSTAND TCP FUUUUUUUQQQQHDJDIOAJEJDICJDNXIKZMZJDJCU2

I have to take UDP and add packet ordering, filter in, and resend and some form of handshake, because client couldn't figure out how to change the port from UDP to TCP and refused any help1

Another interview Tuesday. Jr. Java gig. That makes 6 in about 3 weeks? I guess getting interviews is better than not getting any.2

can't take this sh1t anymore, will start updating my CV today.
I have to steer wheels on this shitty php-related task with testing suites with latest guides written in 2014, code base of that suite got a shitton of changes.
When referring to original documentation and example that is not working and gives me loads of errors, community pricks just saying something like: don't use 6 year old tutorials!!! well, that is the latest I could find, so yeah -> basically go fuck yourself situation!
went alive from 1st part as I managed to make some hacky clusterfuck that works. now i had to switch library that has no documentation at all, has shitton of options and lattest update is like from 3 years ago, library that is connected had some breaking changes lately so to no surprise I can't get this shit to work!
Is whole php ecosystem just made of folks who simply doesn't give a fuck and latest knowledge update they had is like 4 years ago?
ofc I am excluding laravel community in this!2 -
Could someone explain to this old fart what the kiki and bouba thing I keep seeing around the place is all about? Is it something to do with Köhler's work, or just something the urban dictionary hasn't yet catalogued?5

Oh, how much I hate those new years resolutions! People do then over and over, and they almost never comply with their list. Everone thinks they can forsee what will happen in the next year, except they force what will NOT happen. Dumb wishful thinking. If solving problems and achieving goals would be as simple as making a list on a magical day, you all would be unemployed, because all the problems would have been solved just by making the list. You need to stop dreaming and work hard.

Agreeing to do iOS dev. I feel like my previous project has stolen 2 valuable years of my career from me.

Dear the devs at Danske Bank UK,
For the 4th time in 5 years I am going to send a error report to you and get my local branch to directly email you to complain about the lack of being able to see anything on my ISA on online banking, plus just fucking fix it,

I'd tinkered with computers for a long time but the breakthrough moment for me was a robotics class in elementary school where I programmed Legos in TC Logo.
That summer, I made a washing machine with multiple cycles and a door sensor to interrupt the cycles.
Soon after, I played with the code for Gorillas in QBasic to fix a race condition when running it on my 486 at home.1 -
Visual studio: *thinking for 10 years*
Me: looks like it's trying to validate bad connections on this SSIS package. *disables connection checking*
Visual studio: *thinking for 10 years* Validating connections... [Visual studio is not responding] -
I finally got a working D&D Dungeon Master AI working right, a lot of actions have to be presented before the full combat round, but the results are all unique, but it still isn't creative enough to add more then 2 npc with conversation skills, I think there's some hidden blocks in the backend :/7

I don't think it's still a valid years of experience of react native/flutter thing when they're job posting.
"Must have 4 years experience with react native/flutter"
I'll be seeing "I'm sorry, but you did not have 4 years of experience in flutter"3 -
Been using Dark Mode for 3 years now but no idea why I didn't start using it before.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't of needed glasses 3 years ago if I did it sooner.3 -

When should you get a senior title? After x years in the industry, at y age, having worked there for z years or what do you guys think?1 -
My life centered around coding... Not so much these few years though.
So that's around 15 years? But I just don't feel motivated or interested in doing anything new.... Unless I get paid... -
