Visual Studio sucks.
Atom sucks.
Sublime Text sucks.
Windows Movie Maker is the real editor for code.33 -
:^)
For real though, to each their own in the end.
I accept MacOS for development, but Apple hardware is just price gouging.51 -
Hey geeky girl,
Roses are #ff0000
Violets are #0000ff
I use hex codes, but I’d use RGB for you.
Yet to try it in real life.6 -
This is the coding rig for everyone that claims himself THE REAL PROGRAMMER (and everyone else except him is just an idiot, a noob or a kiddo).8
-
Client just informed our support that they solved their own forgotten password problem by clicking the "forgot password" button in our app. They say they are now awaiting the email with the password recovery details.
One problem: we don't have a forgot password button in our app.9 -
Latest facebook for iOS update is 219 mega-fucking-bytes. Yet, no real changelog to tell me what da fuck changed!!!!!! Fuck that developer for real!!!14

Misunderstanding is like running ftp server on port 80!
Ftp responses for http request!
In real life it happens like this3 -
I hate it when people rant that we need to call 'Ctrl, Alt & Delete' for help when we're in problem.
Real geek will use 'Ctrl + Shift + Esc'.11 -
Wish me luck guys I think this is it. I'm going to be financially set for real this time woohoo! Big thanks to my man billy6
-
A friend of mine took part in development of a website for a real estate agency. Their database was stored on a floppy disk.7
-
Well, that was fast! 1 week for international shipping (Canada). Thanks dfox and trogus for the awesome swag (and for making an awesome app). Didn't even have the time to finish my 3d printed ball before I got the real one :P10
-
Fucking crunchyroll hardcodes their access tokens in a Constants Class in their APK, technically that is a security issue.
What the actual fuck Crunchyroll!? No fucking wonder you got DNS Hijacked so quick, security is literally your second priority you dumbed down twats, get some real devs and some real QAs for fucking god sakes, you're tearing down your own system by inviting exploits.8 -
Just discovered that we are loading 200k for a custom font on one of our platforms...
200k FOR A FUCKING FONT?!? FOR REAL??? ITS NOT EVEN FUCKING DIFFERENT ON SIGHT!
So I sarcastically asked why the fuck are we using it and my coworker said its because the designer designed (duh) the layout this way...
Look... Usually I'm a quiet person and I don't rant in real life but this time I could not restrain myself.15 -
Got PHP Internship interview lined up tomorrow...
First ever real interview...big step for young me
Wish me luck guys9 -
Everybody talks about burnout syndrome or crappy tech interviews, but not about a real struggle for devs, bubbles in their laptop stickers.3

Hahahaha, great start of Monday, discovering angry passive/aggresive comments from previous devs.. xD

Let’s be real here for a second.
All I really want in my life is this virtual doggo!
A real virtual good boy!11 -
TFW someone tells you that you're not a "real frontend developer" and then repeatedly asks for CSS help... 😒3
-
So day 2 of my python automations.
I have spent 6 hours and a lot of stack overflow “research” to saved myself 45 minutes a day with file downloads (web & ftp and outlook emails), excel spreadsheets and data manipulation macros, all stored in a nice tidy zip file at the end.
Now to find a way to send to a web server for digestion 😎
And all of this in a poor 90 lines 😧
God damn why didn’t I look into this earlier?2 -
Why do people talk so much in the real world. I'm okay with yes/no questions. Talking face to face is exhausting for me. Leave me alone. I'm okay with chat too.
Can't tell these to anybody for real tho.
Sighs.7 -
Just read a forum thread where someone uses an excel spreadsheet as their database for a PHP website. What makes it worse is they have done this for the past 12 years.
Is this real or someone taking the piss?11 -
Best: Finally left the video game industry for a "real" software engineering role!
Worse: Left work at an exciting studio and fun projects for shorter hours and more pay, and it's incredibly boring and I actually *miss* the crunch and chaos. -
The biggest annoyance in Java for me is the absence of "real" properties. Writing getters and setters everywhere is ugly, you are generating them anyways.7
-
Company: Hey finish off that degree and we will hire you as a "real developer".
Me: Hey I finished my degree and I applied for that internally posted developer position. How about making me a "real developer" now.
Company: ...
Company: ...
Finally replied today with generic email template thanking me for my interest and applauding me for my skills but sadly informing me I don't meet the requirements for the position.
W.T.F 😡
I think I might be done with this company.11 -
Nvidia makes real time ray tracing and a ehole bunch of graphics stuff beyond our imagination but they can't make a linux driver that actually works well... For ducks sake9

Company upper management was asked of any plans for supporting businesses in the metaverse.
They said they want to focus on bussiness in the real world.

So I just got this email from a tech company, I registered to send my CV some years ago , about a dev Job openning.
The descripition included:
Java and Angular ( first red flag )
So I go to their site to check it out ...
No https, ping the domain returns an ip from another continent with 500+ ms latency.
Major flaws on the site usability...
Super dumb password recovery method...
I'm fucking outta here dude. I might send them a proposition to fix their servers and at least put it behind letsencrypt though...
And these morons have big clients, like my bank... wtf...4 -
Wrote a vbscript(yeah for Real) that opened the CD tray...and execute it remotely to random guys pcs
-
I'm starting a side project. This time I'm totally gonna finish it. For real. 14th time's the charm, right?4

To all the developers fighting for a good architecture, and the designers fighting for good UX. You guys are the real heroes fighting the eternal fight.
Here's to you! -
Is it normal to deploy a 5.6MB main.css file?
Last week I had to change some shizzle on a website (externally developed).
Well, I was quite shocked...
We usually deploy a single stylesheet under 700 kB.
But also because we never use CSS "frameworks".30 -
First time web developing for real. Didn't realise I needed to clear chrome cache. So much wasted time!4

Im learning python(it's my first real programming language) and I finally understood for loops.... yeeeey6

Thinking about creating a website? Just do it!
Thinking about the game? You just lost!6 -
Indian tech companies can put in weird skill requirements at times. See point 2, for fuck's sake is this real?! And it obviously contradicts point with point 5 right?6

Legit can't remember. I've been driven by anxiety of deadlines for so long (and also, had no real vacation) that I only can work if a deadline is approaching fast.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯1 -
When you finally get to use that tensorflow side project you've been working on for a while to solve a real world problem and your boss wants to know how it works.3

Cadavers? Illegal.
Skeletons? Sure, $6000.
you can just buy a real skeleton for $6k and it's legal in 47 states.8 -
Fuck you for testing devs with them online algo tests instead of giving them real projects to do as a way to assess their coding skills15

I should be saving money as a student. Wait, let me just buy that domain name real quick for my new project first.3

Updated goal in regards to my road to machine learning mastery.
Status: new found motivation
Motivational case: bring humanity closer to having 2B become a real thing.
Reason: big booty droids should be a right to humanity.
End of transmission.
On another note, the sony xperia compact is a real nice device, so is the note 8. I would prob go with the note for power but the size of the xperia is more convenient for my taste.1 -

Real programmer facepalm-
When you argue with a shopkeeper for giving you an expired product because it was dated six months back according to you! Then in between the argument, you realize it follows different date format i.e. dd/MM/yy.
The moment was a real facepalm. 😶1 -
Sleeping the Thread for 1 sec, because the database had no real timestamp and a transaction on the same item within the same second would lead to a doubled primary key...
No real feature, but it is a bug and this makes it a feature I guess.1 -
Thank you all for helping me to my first real goal, 1k! Thank you all! Love this community so much! Let’s continue that.5

The anti-procrastination-technique "If it only takes five minutes or less, do it right now" is basically "Shortest Job First" for Real Life3 -
Today the struggle was real.
But damn if it isn't days like this where you learn real shit.
Fighting with a debian VM for half the day to make a local development environment. I'm tired, but everything works, the project looks good, and I'm just sorta angry/tired/proud now.
I learned so much, and now want pie. I am going to go eat some pie.3 -
So I had my external HD connected so thought I'd back up my code...

This is the current condition of tcs in india.
Fucking servers are busy providing sessions from 3 hours.
This is a contest organised by tcs india for college student and this was a demo round(mockvita). Just to prepare students for the real challenge.
6 hour challenge , i completed it in 3 and now when its my turn to upload the java file its showing me this fucking shit. I fucking coded for 3 hours straight and now when the shit is working, their servers just say fuck off.
Its a global contest and this shit is happening for real.5 -
Some minutes ago our firewall in office overheated, no internet, no network, no real way to work some time for coffee and nerd talk - not bad at all1

On the beginning of a project I'm not yet ( 😒 ) taking part of I questioned the use of firebase because I understood the client was gonna ask for the web app to be hosted on their servers lately, but people told me not to worry.
Today... Only 2 fucking months later they are asking for the specifications/technologies used so they can prepare their server to host it and I was laughing my ass out internally while saying to my boss:
Well, looks like you are gonna need to rewrite huge parts and probably write a back end from scratch if you are gonna use postgresql.
Lol, why do people never listen to me? This is becoming ridiculous.... -
Several years ago, I heard from a friend who was doing assignments for students on the side. Quite a hustle. His story began when he wanted to figure out why can't these students be able to draw their own database tables, relationships, UML, etc. That's what school has to be teaching them and then he was told that they were learning through MS Access. He goes and tell me that even though this is a lame way of teaching database design, its definitely easier to explain through hands-on and less typing mistakes, as according to the lecturer he met. Making the explanation more visually appealing and helpful for understanding.
OK I get it, but somehow that taught them the wrong way of database design from the beginning. I'd prefer getting them to start writing SQL commands from day 1 and play em at some DB VM. Keep em as real as it gets.
Now I have my own students asking for help in their assignment and also asked for tutoring lessons in web development. So I gave them the crash course in HTML, CSS and Javascript. I've asked them if they've used anything of what I taught them in school. They go and tell me that they've been taught web development through Wordpress. Oh WTF!? I havn't talked to their lecturer yet but it better be a really good explanation to teach these youngsters in a flawed and bloated PHP CMS framework for "web development".2 -
Starting my first real dev position Monday. Scared about using a windows computer for dev for the first time but stoked.
My rant is against myself that I didn't switch jobs earlier.6 -

Sometimes when i drop my fone, break something or say something stupid i yearn for a real life "Ctrl + Z", and just undo that shit right quick.5

I got fired from my first real dev job after two weeks for working to slow... If anyone wants to help me look for my self-esteem, pick up a shovel and start diggin'.3
-
Maybe I don't even want to understand what "programming" means. Although I keep visiting StackOverflow almost daily to find useful advice on topics that do matter to me, when I post a question myself, they mostly get deleted for being "offtopic", not real "programming" questions, prone to attract "opinionated answers" or too much concerned about usability in real life? 🤔8
-
I just searched like half an hour for a book.. Then I started tabbing to Google but it wasn't working.. I was a bit shocked when I noticed this was real live.2

Have I told you that I love Sass? Yes? Well, that's fucking true! Like today I decided to host the used font myself and just include all font-awesome SCSS into my main.sass and saved one <link>. That boosted loading time and user don't have to see those ugly squares while page is loading. I'm truly in love.7

I think I've officially changed everything over on my dev rant profile. I love all the options for the avatars. I wish changing myself in real life were this easy.

Fuck UPS and their API Documentation. Has anyone here ever integrated their API ?
Their API documentation doesn't mention any sandbox or testing accounts.
If I click on their create access key button, it takes me to a form which requires a real payment method and address which seems like it's meant for real stuff not testing.4 -
How to write unmaintainable code and keep your job for life, tip #476;
Use A.C.R.O.N.Y.M.S. to keep the code terse. Real men never define acronyms, they understand them genetically3 -
My biggest bad habit (for now!) is rushing changes. I have no real deadlines, yet I rush commits and cause failures in our CI tool every week1

I'm writing a website for a café and I'd like to use a new tool for generating content and managing it. Only real requirement is a SCSS pre-processor and maybe built-in Auth.
Any suggestions?3 -
I'm unironically VERY excited. In the last month, TWO real people, both of them into devops according to their profiles, have begun watching avtomat (https://github.com/Liebranca/...), and yes I WILL continue spamming the link if this keeps up. Would you like me to stop? Then give me a dislike and tit-slap the "unsubscribe" button NOW to end my suffering!4

Is Vim viable for Java ecosystem?
Im using vim only for years for various languages and I never had a problem. I dont use IDE or any GUI software almost never for programming.
Im being reassigned to a Java Spring project at my company, and my colleges are telling me I should start using some IDE and what not, but none of them gave me any real reason.
So Im asking is it really that inconviniet to work without IDE in Java/Spring ecosystem? Some real reasons pls.
Im developing in linux, and I know my way in bash5 -
real story. In high school, a librarian (women) recommended me a book. I read it in classroom, it was fine for the first half and then.... the real story began.
It was 50 shades of grey.
It's been about 4 years. I'll soon be completing bachelors. And I've yet to return the book, out of shyness.9 -

When you finish a project that abuses vanilla js and canvas for real-time updates on tables generated from drag actions in a graphic (no raphael, paperjs or konvas) and test it in IE 😄
Thank god it's going to be applied in a controlled environment... a real browser can be used 😇 -
Today I got the chance to try 1 of the 9 HoloLens available in my country. I'm completely mind blown. The ability to incorporate virtual elements in the real world and make them behave like real physical objects is incredible! I really hope AR gains traction to buy an headset for myself.

My department never has real pressure like real outside deadlines. Except for this project.
Now guess what happened during the final hours of the project:
Fuckin circleCI goes into "degraded performance" (last time it was "partial outage").

AI applications:
We all know how AI is going to be powerful and drive the world in future. But I don't see any real world applications which can be developed using AI. If you know any real world applications please share here.

Victor Pelevin is an iconic Russian writer. I won't describe him here (5000 characters is not enough), I just say I think he's one of the greatest if not THE greatest modern author.
Here's the tea (sorry for my bad translation):
"Some of our illusions feel more real than other illusions. A kid is urinating in perfectly real toilet when he's sleeping, he hears a perfectly real sound confirming this, yet he's still unsure.
A grown up, mature man is different only because he also shit himself.
Grown ups have no doubt about reality, that doubt that helps the kid to get closer to the truth. But grown ups have 'scientific explanations' that toilet is real because there is sound of urine, and the sound of urine is real because toilet is made of ceramic, so because of it we all should be working 24/7.
To help grown ups wake up from this 'reality', death exists."2 -

Area: oil & gas
Full time job: SCADA apps, network comms, real time database;
Part time job: drilling app for geologist engineers, real time data acquisition, lots of math calculations and simulations;
I'm loving both jobs, because of working with external acquisition devices, because of freedom of work and complexity of the field. -
I am getting my first apartment next Saturday, and it's awesome. And I was thinking of buying a great desktop computer because my laptop is getting old and I want a real desk with a real modern computer, also as a symbol of my new life coming. It would have costs me around 1300€, but guess what, I just spent that yesterday to pay the real estate agency, the deposit, and the first rent for that apartment 😭 I guess I'll have to wait again for that new pc...10

The hard way can be the best way for education. -
Spent almost a month writing real time sync between two platforms for client. Changed it n times to fit their custom conditions. They tested it for real time sync.
Now suddenly their requirement is to have scheduled sync and it is "As we discussed in the beginning".1 -

I haven't written serious code in 3 months. By serious I mean I haven't thought a lot about a problem or developed something difficult to develop.
Also I have avoided coding whenever I could.
I did that after a friends' advice as they saw me burned out for real and quite sad at the time.
Honestly, I feel much better emotionally and my overall mood has much less tension. Gonna start coding for real soon after getting that out of my system. -
So I was looking for some real-time dashboard app using vue, tried searching for it on google and found some article.
He lost me at setInterval.8 -

Ever since I stumbled upon devRant, I have learned so much about the developer community that I had no idea about before. I'm just a lowly undergrad with no real world experience, but this community has provided so much insight of what the real world is like. Thank you, devRant community, for this insight.1 -
I'm going to sleep knowing that tomorrow will be another shitty day. But, at least, I use notepad for writing sources instead of some real IDE

Anyone here a Buddybuild user? This seems like a real good way for Apple to squeeze the Android market of its devs. http://mashable.com/2018/01/...1

Why do some employers make such a distinction between learning the tools at university and learning the same tools at the workplace?
Are they backward or old? Don't they know modern, high-quality universities have modern environments that are in fact real life?
Environments with acc-test-prod-dev with gitlab, ci/cd in Scrum teams and the works? Heck, at my uni we even worked at real companies, did internships there for months!
Come on.. to me this 'the tools you learned in school isn't the same experience as real life experience'. Right, these guys must be on some conservative backward model because there is in fact no difference.
I have worked both during my uni internship at a real company (in teams too) as well as irl at real companies and there is no difference, it's the same thing.
I don't care if I've learned to experience git + ReactJS etc during an internship through uni or at a workplace. It's all bureaucracy.10 -
The devil in me wants to create a new javascript framework just for the fun of it but the real me is holding back the urge because seriously man isn’t getting any younger.4

Hey guys.
Yesterday I saw something about real-time Implementations using deepstream.io and been asking myself if I should try to add it to the project I'm working on (Angular).
It's important to say I'm working for free, because it's a school project, which in the end is going to be used by real people and solve real problems inside my school.
BUT it's not a required feature. It's more like a matter of vanity.
It's just id don't know if it's worth the time and effort. Or if it will work at all2 -

Am I the only one that dancing on my chair to disco/house/techno while coding means I finally reached the Flow zone where I'm focused for real3 -
I was evaluating a b2b enterprise software solution today. Mediocre except for their real-time analytic dashboard. They used Idashboards.com to analyze feed and display. Tableau is similar. Impressive.

Played almost every flight simulator out there, always wanted to be a fighter pilot, I used to play for hours and learn about each aircraft from internet. Novalogic's MiG-29 fulcrum was my favourite as it was realistic as hell, real radars , flight controls and cobra manoeuvres, tactical landings made the sim real fun. Sadly was not eligible for Air force and commercial pilot exams due to health issues.

I have been using CakePHP 1.3 and 2.x fore some years. I built two custom platforms on them that we used for almost every project at work, and also some of my freelance ones.
We've built all kind of stuff, from basic CMS to large scale CRM/ERP systems, and it held it's own!
But now I wanna build another one! :D
I wanna build a platform on CakePHP 3.x fore sume time at work, but the constant flow of projects leaves little time for this.
And I am not talking about the shitty stuff like the sorry attempts you can find oh GitHub right now, that I never even managed to use once for a real project (I really tired!), I am talking about a real platform, for real world projects, with a real world interface, and real world functionallity, for real world use cases!
I was thinking to start an open source project, but I never managed one so I have some concerns...
Like it will not get any contributors and I will eventually do it on my own anyway, or like it WILL get traction and I will not be able to manage the project, or the community.
I am the head of the dev dept at work, but open source seems like a whole new ball game for me...
Anyway, what do you people think? Would you work on something like that? Would you use it? Should I create a GitHub project and add a collab? Or is it doomed already?
