Just got a brand new car coming from a 1999 Honda CRV and holy shit the tech in these things is insane.. basically drives itself on HWY's, can start it from an app, does all sorts of weird stuff.. obviously it comes with risks of being hacked and all that but damn new cars are wicked these days.

Am I being completely ignorant? I like to think of programming like construction (worked for 9 years in that industry) when I learn a new language I approach it the same way as using a new tool. I don't feel like I'm learning a new "trade", just a new way to do the same things i already know how to do using a different method. I feel like a lot of programmers have trouble picking up new languages/frameworks because the THINK it is completely new...where as learn a new TRADE (devops, database arch, design etc) is something completely new/different

FUCK SAFARI!!!!! I am developing our new company website and have a deadline tomorrow. It is built with flexbox WHICH SHOULD WORK EVERYWHERE BY NOW. The new website works FINALLY GREAT in all browsers now and then I just tested it in Safari (which I did not do before) on my mac and SO MANY THInGs doNT WORK! WHATTA FCUK?? So far I've checked various chips for visible damage, and nothing except a blown fuse on both machines. Apparently it takes dual 9vAC and single 5vDC. The 9 powers the SID and the video output, the VIC-II heatsink is off, and I've tested the PSU voltages and one of the 9v's is dead. I'll be getting new fuses and a new PSU soon. Any recommendations on other things to check or things to do when they're done? Pic included because why not.

People know that things are getting serious when you open up a new twitter account for your personal project.

I maintain a service that people are billed yearly for. A bunch of users just requested a new feature that will require me to build a completely new backend and change a bunch of things that will require a full rewrite of a couple different aspects of the service. I'm both excited and scared. Wish me luck.

Why is Drupal so hard to learn?!!!!!!

It feels like you are learning an entirely new language. Yes it makes hard things simple, at the same time making simple things hard to accomplish.

And also modules are buggy, you would fix bugs instead of doing your tasks.

I want to learn Drupal but I guess it is not friendly for beginners like me.

Instead of spending time to configure the billions of things for React, I have decided to start my new project with the good ol’ Jquery. Some might disagree, but I want to get a working prototype first.

PHB wanted access to our team chat room where we do standup, among other things. Access granted. Immediately a new chat room was created.

Our job is basically doing something new or something we've never done everyday and trying to guess things over and over again until it works.

I enjoy solving problems, figuring out puzzles and learning new things.

999 frameworks that do the same thing and every year 1 of them becomes the fad and many things written in last year's fad gets rewritten in new one.

Opening a new file for notes and keeping it open without saving. I will just add things to it until it's HUGE. Then i have to go through it...

Today, I say farewell to a piece of software that has shared my professional uprising as a dev, today I let go off an old friend, today i uninstall chrome, after nearly 12 years of dedication, hard work and pain staking performance issues from time to time, you went from the child star that fixed what was wrong with browsers back in 2008, and became the abusive man child that crashes my system when I open you now, so enough with your bullshit.

Today I transfer my things to Edge(chromium) and say farewell old friend, there's only so many BSOD's you can cause just by launching a new tab without hardware acceleration before I can not stand the sight of you anymore.

Company is celebrating new awards. Whole dev team basically says fuck you we have better things todo and isn’t attending for champagne.

90% of developer effort is maintenance, not making new things.

What time do you get up on work days? I'm starting to think I should have me time in morning (reading, learning, coding my own things) before going to work.

I've think I've come the the conclusion that this job/team is sorta chaotic and tedious and there's no skill growth. Not learning anything new. Usually just something broken, integrate some new feature, build something that I've already built before but differently for this specific case. Nothing fun or challenging, or new.

And also tired of trying to be a "role model", make things right. I tend to like to keep things orderly, documented, well tested and clean but everyone else seems to just bulldoze their way to get whatever they need, leaving a mess behind... It's been like 2yrs already but the technical debt seems to be growing not shrinking...

I love technology. I love programming and developing software. I love self-learning new things.

But I REALLY REALLY REALLY hate Math. And suck at it too.

I want to study comp-sci at the university but I'm scared of the math.

I see a lot of rants about Linux dual boot with Windows and Windows update fucks up grub. So I bought a new ssd and reinstalled Linux, but damn.. its always a lot of work to make everything work again. Every time I still learn new things and I don't have to be afraid anymore after Windows update

I have hundreds of things ti do , Prepare for exams, write code for my internship project,write code for my game, learn new things about ML,etc.
But all I fuckin do is play games all day instead of making mine!

Best: learned a lot of new things: vueJS, ES6, Bootstrap, CSS3 transitions and transforms, use of some cool JS libraries...

I've finally got a monitor at work that works with Samsung Dex.
Positive things:
- new super cool monitor
- can remove windows now from the dual boot of the laptop since everything I needed it for can be now done on Dex.

Negative things:
- DevRant doesn't work with Dex. It just doesn't load properly. But maybe it will work through a browser. Need to test...

I need to rant about life decisions, and choosing a dev career probably too early. Not extremely development related, but it's the life of a developer.

TL;DR: I tried a new thing and that thing is now my thing. The new thing is way more work than my old thing but way more rewarding & exciting. Try new things.

I taught myself to program when I was a kid (11 or 12 years old), and since then I have always been absolutely sure that I wanted to be a games programmer. I took classes in high school and college with that aim, and chose a games programming degree. Everything was so simple, nail the degree, get a job programming something, and take the first games job that I could and go from there.

I have always had random side hobbies that I liked to teach myself, just like programming. And in uni I decided that I wanted to learn another language (natural, not programming) because growing up in England meant that I only learned English and was rarely exposed to anything else. The idea of knowing another fascinated me.

So I dabbled in a few different languages, tried to find a culture that seemed to fit my style and attitude to life and others, and eventually found myself learning Korean. That quickly became something I was doing every single day, and I decided I needed to go to Korea and see what life there could be like.

I found out that my university offered a free summer school program for a couple of weeks, all I had to pay for was the flights. So a few months later I was there and it was literally the best thing I'd done in my life to that point. I'd found two things that made me feel even better than the idea of becoming the games programmer I'd always wanted to be. Travelling and using my other language to communicate with people that I couldn't in English. At that point I was still just a beginner, but even the simple conversations with people who couldn't speak English felt awesome.

So when I returned home, I found that that trip had completely thrown a spanner into my life plan. All I could think about after that was improving my language skills and going back there for as long as possible. Who knows what to do.

I did exactly that. I studied harder than I'd ever studied for anything and left the next year to go and study in Korea, now with intermediate language skills, everyday conversations no longer being a problem at all.

Now I live here, I will be here for the next year and I have to return to England for one year to finish my degree. Then instead of having my simple plan of becoming a developer, I can think of nothing I want to do less than just stay in England doing the same job every day, nothing to do with language. I need to be at least travelling to Korea, and using my language skills in at least some way.

The current WIP plan is to take intensive language classes here (from next week, every single weekday), build awesome dev side projects and contribute to open source stuff. Then try to build a life of freelance translation/interpreting/language teaching and software development (maybe here, maybe Korea).

So the point of this rant is that before, I had a solid plan. Now I am sat in my bed in Korea writing this, thinking about how I have almost no idea how I'm going to build the life that I want. And yet somehow, the uncertainty makes this so much more exciting and fulfilling. There's a lot more worrying, planning and deciding to do. But I think the fact that I completely changed my life goals just through a small decision one day to satisfy a curiosity is a huge life lesson for me. And maybe reading this will help other people decide to just try doing something different for once, and see if your life plan holds up.

If it does, never stop trying new things. If it doesn't (like mine), then you now know that you've found something that you love as much as or even more that your plan before. Something that you might have lived your whole life never finding.

I don't expect many people to read this all, but writing it here has been very cathartic for me, and it's still a rant because now I have so much more work and planning to do. But it's the good kind of work.

Things aren't so simple now, but they're way more worth it.

I am a noob as of now. So much to learn! So little time. Its so difficult to juggle between learning new things and academics!

Even thou I am a new programmer, everyone I meet tell me the same stuff. "You will almost never feel good at something". And yes, I never do, even with things I'm fairly good at I still think I haven't grasped it yet. Always new sites and resources to check out, always new things to dig into.

I watch a lot of coding content these days just to get a feel for what's the message given to freshers or non tech people about the IT industry.

One of the things I immensely disagree with, is the idea that software engineers learn throughout their career. I disagree with the word 'throughout'.

They completely ignore stagnation on the job and also this fact that learning new technology at some point in ur career just wouldn't make sense, effort wise and financially.

Here's something I'll never do - Learn Ruby and then proceed to Ruby on Rails. Because the system wouldn't consider my past experience with NodeJS and Laravel, as a result I would be considered a fresher. So it wouldn't make sense for me to put this much effort and start all over again.

Also, your learning curve does plateau at some point in ur career for a certain amount of time. You may learn new things but sometimes you're only concerned with maintaining pre-built stuff so you don't learn new things.

I know some engineers are motivated enough to learn new things outside of a job. But I just wanted to say this.

I had a pretty good day today. Things are coming together at the new job, and I'm a little less afflicted with impostor syndrome.

I'm in this weird place where I want a job but also want to learn new languages so that I have better chances of getting a job. I also really like learning and figuring out new ways to develop things and seeing what's out there.

I wanted to make some changes to one project on GitHub. Forked, changed things ( in new branch), make PR, waited.

My PR got positive feedback, but was closed without merging.

Upon me asking why, I was banned from all their repos.

I asked them to commit things that they have done with proper message in every projects from now on. I find 50-80 commits to pull in every 10mins. Ughhh. They were committing every single changes they were making. 😂😂😂

I must say I love learning new things!!! Took a quick detour to build a small custom music player, now it doesn't seem to be that quick as I am learning a new framework. Only about 11 pages of many more still to go, and the funny thing? The main part I need - how to play audio, is in the last section of the tutorials.

Why does all source code that I see looks like someone just put new things in the file that was opened in the editor at that very moment instead of thinking about where it really belongs?

Why can't GO just have arrays. Why do I have to learn new things like slices :(

Perhaps one of the most important things I will ever learn in life is how powerful regularity is. Read up on a topic once? Understand nothing? Read more random shit on it. Keep reading. And then stare in awe as things fall into place.

I'm writing this out not because people don't know this. Almost everyone knows this. But it's nice to be reminded of it. It's nice to be reminded that learning new things and honing bew skills is never easy. It's nice to be reminded that there's great knowledge and skills waiting to be learned.

This is not meant as motivation so much as it is meant as a reminder. Our colleagues may be garbage. Our clients may be garbage. Our bosses, the interns, the new dev, and almost certainly ourselves, are almost always garbage.

But if you've learned 1-2 new things today, the day wasn't garbage.

I'm a rather young developer, self-learned everything and started when I was 13 (now 20) but I still feel like I'm a total beginner since I have not yet mastered the things I am OK at.

Php (laravel, since it makes things much easier), js (jquery, bad at vanilla, have used angular and ember but not mastered), node, linux, html, css, photoshop, illustrator, sql, mongo and windows servers

I know little about many things, can create things that are asked of me but the methods I use are rather bad imo.. ex: I finish coding a section of a site, but when I need to add a new feature I find myself rewriting most of the stuff to add the new feature and in the end still feeling like the code could be optimized further, even though I have no idea how.

TL;DR I write bad code, but things work as long as I am monitoring them. I know little about alot of stuff but mastered none of them.

What should I do? Go to school for programming?

Within next 3 days my Release date was set. I was to join a new company. My current fucking manager screwed things by postponing my release date because the new replacement they hired had not totally understood the project. Well, who the fuck told you to hire literally few days away from my release. My manager expects that the new resource learn everything I know. Fuck off man, I cannot spoon feed a person on everything.

The nice thing about being a developer? Learning something new every day. The worst thing about being a developer? Going back to the code you wrote before learning these new things.

I was hired by company because of my understanding of backend, server side, database, aws etc. I worked on both in past and learned, got better with JS later. I like to learn new things and have knowledge about web development.

Currently, I refactor some code in a private project at home. Yesterday I ran tests and some things didn't work I thought I already fixed. After I fixed them other things were broke and again errors felt familiar. With every fix and every new error I was more and more sure, I already did exactly the same things before. I thought, maybe it is a Déjà-vu or I dreamed about that.
After two hours, when everything was working again, I realized I did all this two nights before in a branch and totally forgot about it.

Spaghetti codes makes a person feel frustrated, non-productive even slightly depressed, and even do refractoring takes time of production and slows things down in the short term there's nothing like that "new feeling " after you successfully re-organize and re-structure a project.

When Email and Time-sheet is everything in the workplace....
They literally don't care about your work or about successfully deploying project, if you don't have it in timesheet then you did nothing.

They want me to work on totally new things and expect to get the results within week and when I mention this is new and I can't even give estimates, they want that to be in an Email. Like WTF!! you even know this is fucking new thing that only I'm working on, there's no one to help me.

And I'm here learning,studying so I can solve these out of scope requirements with best practices.

And in the meantime they also want me to work one few other things .__.

I am losing my mind trying to create a new feature to a 2013 code base.
This project uses Zend Framework 1.12 and jQuery 1.4, so I added Vue and things went better but I have some tests to do.

My MEAN stack study is about 75% now but then I keep on getting some new cool things like integration of NestJS and Redux in the MEAN stack.

MEAN Stack - a very big steep learning curve but I like it.

Well can confirm after a second viewing, the new star wars is ok, not great not bad buuuuuuut, it's a lot better the second time if you start looking at the smaller details and realise a lot of new things, overall, 5/10
