Yo dawg, check out my fresh pimped homeoffice!
I have been a developer since I was 13 and this is the first time ever I feel complete :) Wish all of you even a better one than mine!76 -
"I have no idea what this line of CSS is doing."
*Deletes line*
*Entire app falls apart*
"Better put that back..."
*ctrl z*5 -
My worst developer sin is probably me talking sh*t about programs I could never have done better myself.
"Omg, this is so inefficent!"
"Omg, the ui is so confusing!"
"What kind of idiot would do that?"
...I'm not the only one who does that, am I?10 -
My wife is getting better and better each day writing code. And she is starting to really love the terminal too!
With this rate, she is going to know more GNU+Linux than me.
😎7 -
Hello world, this is my first rant :)
Today at work, this was on the whiteboard.
Little "war" between the iOS pole and the PHP pole :D (Obviously PHP is better)19 -
Guys google have made a revolutionary discovery, it's going to change smartphones for the better!!!!
(Yes must clarify this is immense amounts of sarcasm because fucking hell google you would think you have all this money that you could work this fucking shit out...)12 -
This is Spork. Spork lives on the desk in my apartment.
My girlfriend bought the plant for her office but he wasn't getting enough light there so now he has a better home on my desk and gets lots of sunlight during the day.4 -
(Interview for sde-3 position)
(continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/2132431/... )
Interviewer - *opens laptop. Gives a question.* solve this.
Me - *a bit surprised that such questions were being asked on a sde-3 level*
this is the 4th or 5th question from geeksforgeeks, isn't it? I know the answer to this. Do u still want me to solve it?
Interviewer - *not believing me* Yes
Me - okay. Well this *writing down the original solution mentioned on the site* is the verbatim code mentioned on the website, with complexity O(n^2).
However I feel this is not the optimal solution. Let me write a better solution.
*I provide a better solution*
This has a complexity of O(n log n) . What do you think?
Interviewer - Nope. This could be a lot better.
Me - okay. Let me see. Did some minor changes, added some caching (obviously this will have no effect on the base algorithm) etc
How about now?
Interviewer - nope. Still not good.
Me - okay. Can you tell me how to improve it?
Interviewer - no we are not allowed to solve problems for you. It is not our interview, it is yours.
Me - that makes no sense. Interviews are a two way street. I'd very much like to know the optimal answer to this.
Interviewer - okay
*copies down the answer from geeksforgeeks*
This is good
Me - *at first I thought this was a prank or something. *
I just mentioned this answer here.
Then I spent the next 10 minutes providing a BETTER solution.
May I know how yours is better?
Interviewer - this solution has 2-3 loops. Yours has a function calling itself.
Me - that's called divide and conquer using recursion mf!
Anyways let's take an example and do a dry run.
Interviewer - okay
*we do dry run*
Interviewer - oh yes. Yours ran faster. But it will run fast only sometimes.
Me - yes. Each time the algorithm rolls a dice to decide if it should run fast or slow. You have one goddamn awesome weed dealer man.
I got to go. Thank you for meeting me.14 -
At a busy restaurant.
Person 1: oh my God this man here is having a heart attack. Is there a doctor here?
Person 2: here's ten reasons why Kotlin is better than Java for Android development5 -
Medium Article Title: How to Optimize Your Use of the Terminal
Dev: Oh goody.
Article Content: The terminal is a cli that devs use in order to work at their jobs. It is a very important tool in which… (continued)
Dev: …
WHO IS THIS ARTICLE FOR?? PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET BETTER AT THE TERMINAL BUT HAVE NO IDEA WTF A TERMINAL IS?
This isn’t high school english class, you can skip the circle jerk introduction.13 -
Me: This is good, but here’s a small tiny change that will make it even better!
Tests: 1 success, 3628 failures, simulator freezes and crashes computer
Me: never mind... -
My programming teacher at university is programming like this. I'd better not learn anything from him30
-
I... I can up vote a post? Without having at least X points? Psh, this place is way better than Stack Overflow.3
-
This made my day so much! (The stickers quality is awesome by the way, much better than I expected)14
-
Dev: We need a better name than “Data” for this class. It’s used for displaying a set of tiles with certain coordinates so maybe TileMap would be a bit more declarative?
Manager: No I don’t like that. Data is perfectly fine, this class is for managing data so it’s perfectly declarative you just need to get better at reading code. If you have to change it then DataObject or DataObjectClass might be a bit more specific.
Dev: …14 -
I just want to say this place is AWESOME! 100% better than Reddit and 1000% better than SO. Not sure how I found it....oh yeah I was googling a question on how to do something in JIRA and used the 'f' word in my query.8
-
Does anyone else get so self conscious about writing neat, clean and efficient code that you get demotivated because you always think "there's a better way to do this".
The cleanest code is no code at all. 😂8 -
Another hackathon is over.
Didn't win this one either but I am slowly recognising my weaknesses and (hopefully) getting better.
A good night's sleep and I'm ready for the next one. :)
Beyond Hackathon 2017 @ Athens, Greece6 -
Well here is my new setup.
Left and center screens are connected to one laptop. Where I run my editors and terminals.
Rightmost is connected to another old laptop. This is for browsing and slack.
Using synergy to share mouse and keyboard.
What do you think of this setup? Any better way to do this?18 -
All I can think about since getting this app is how much better my life would be with a devRant stress ball on my desk. Until then, my friend this fake potato will do.5
-
So this guy rated my app 1 star saying that "application is pretty good. I can do almost all of my task using this app. It would be better if you have added this* features."
*The features he mentions is nothing but the substraction of 2 variables.
Why some of the app users behave like this? This is the biggest turn off to motivate me to keep developing if your application is free of cost.
Why can't we delete those review from stores?4 -
Dear client / customer
You have been misled. The customer is not always right. The sooner you realise this and start listening to us as the consultants you hired the better things are going to get. If you were experts in how to do this stuff you wouldn't need us. Please recognise the skills.
Best regards
The design & development community3 -
Me: don't limit yourself! Learn more than one thing, experiment and learn more.
Devrant: don't use x. X is a piece of shit and its not worth it. This is better, and you are wrong.
I hate highly opinionated people. Devrant seems to be full of them.
I seriously believe this is why people like AlexDelarge left. Sooo many punchable motherfuckers up in this bitch man.
"Fucking leave then" ----> go fuck yourself. This platform is great. Some of y'all are great. Having frustrated virgins lurking around does not mean that all of us that like fucking around in here needs to leave.19 -
The relentless feeling that slowly has over taken my waking life. The feeling that if I am not coding, learning or becoming better at coding I am wasting my time. I can't even watch movies anymore without reading articles. This is the worst thing about being a Dev, how when you are a dev you are nothing else.
At least for me, not sure how common this feeling is.10 -
Oh Boy!! Just thought this is an app for tutorials and how too stuff.. now noticed it's better than reddit... Catched my self spending hours here and not doing my work xD13
-
Just canceled my last week vacation (of three weeks) because the deadline is in that last week. I requested my days off BEFORE the project was even planned.
They better appreciate I did this, otherwise I'll be absent when the next deadline is due.10 -
Coworker: "Look our WebApp loads much faster in Chrome (0.8s) than in Firefox (4.6s). This clearly shows that Chrome has the better JS-Engine"
Me internally: "No, it just shows how bad your JS-Code is, and not optimized, you dense Mo**Fu**"5 -
Today I uttered words I thought I'd never say in my life....
"This is why linux is better"
What the hell is going on in 2020 lmao27 -
I found something really interesting depicted in the image.
It is because of memory alignment / padding.
I could explain it to you guys, but this url would do a far better job:
https://kalapos.net/Blog/ShowPost/...8 -
So this is a huge fancy screen showing movie times and marketing stuff at my local cinema.
// TODO: get a better camera phone6 -
I'm so pissed today .... As someone decides to drop the entire database and the backups intentionally because he is jealous of my department doing better .
While I was coding and accidentally punch against the wall and this happened47 -
so i posted this image on my facebook wall(my business depends on facebook) and my father commented, check 1000 times then 😐
i wish i could say, it is not that easy, but i feel it is better not to say anything then explain the complexity of programming 😢3 -
"we use cookies to give you a better experience on our site"
A better experience? Really?
It looks like you're using more than 100 external parties for whatever fucking reason. It is nearly impossible to disallow these, except for some stuff like analytics, which I don't like since it includes mass surveillance parties like Google and Facebook, but I'd at least, to some extent, understand that better.
But, the amount of dark pattern here is staggering and this kind of 'consent' you're using wouldn't, in a million years, hold up under the GDPR.
You know what would be a better experience? No tracking and no ads.
Go fuck your better experience (would that be a better sex experience....?)4 -
There are many ways of development...
Test Driven Development.
Behaviour Driven Development.
Acceptance-Test Driven Development.
YOLO Driven Development.
But nothing in this world is so frustrating as...
Buzzword Driven Development.
As soon as your managers spot a new technology, it needs to be integrated...
For fucks sake... New is not always better.7 -
Yea #deletefacebook is fine and all but what about putting fucking Like-Buttons all over the goddamn web. Care about that, would ya?!? You're not any bit better than zuckerfuck if you are doing this on your site!5
-
Stop reading articles on which framework/library is better, pick one and start actually writing code.
... Only to then discover that this library is utterly broken and/or undocumented and you have to start over again.
GODDAMNIT JS I HATE YOUR ASS7 -
I honestly don't understand people. They are unable to understand easy to use apps when you provide clearly labeled labels yet they use apps like Snapchat which apart from being the worst designed app I have ever seen (it brings SD820 to knees) is unintuitive as hell with no difficulty. How is this even possible.
Also on a side note, go fuck yourself Snapchat. And if any of Snapchat devs are reading this: " go fucking kill yourself. You don't deserve to live after creating such a piece of shit. Even a fresh out of college intern does better job than you. You think this is good? I have never seen anything worse than it. Even fucking in-house government apps are miles better and more intuitive than you. All your ripoffs from Instagram stories to facebooks new clone and others are better than you. Whoever thinks this POS is good enough deserves to be burnt."5 -
Runs some python3 script in terminal
Me: This script is going to take an hour to complete.
#After 50 minutes...
Me: better copy this line...
#Presses CTRL+C instead of CTRL+SHIFT+C
Me: Wahhhhhhh7 -
Yeah.. it's a shame C# doesn't have a type to hold this (4) and then you have to resort to using var.. I am so disappointed, I've heard C# is crap, but this.. THIS!! It doesn't even have a type for normal integers!! FFS!!! I thought it was better than this!!
Oh, wait.. it's not C# who is 'weird'!! It's my super duper cool ex coworker who made a mess of the simple code again... I admit, this is not such a huge deal.. BUT... It doesn't end here.. o.O40 -
Guys, please help me answer this intellectual being. The more stupid the answer, the better. Even better is if there is like a fake loooooonnnngggg step by step guide of it. NB: tafadhali == please.21
-
"Let's create a docker-swarm cluster thingy for this application with horizontal scaling to learn docker and run this application better!"
This stuff is so overwhelming and I don't understand half of how to possibly set this up 😅32 -
Can people just fucking stop using "hacked" as a synonym for "my password has been found out"? Even devs do this shit! Devs should know better about what a "hacked" account is.14
-
When you advise coworkers to do something one way because you know better but they do it their way anyway so this is you when shit hits the fan.
-
Me: Man this has been a killer week! Coding bootcamp has been better than I ever could have dreamed. Home life is good. Nothing could kill my good mood.
*opens up Facebook*
*Sees Microsoft is trying to pay billions of dollars to take control of Github*
...
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK
*Starts cloning repos like crazy*13 -
This is supposed to be a huge European conference on logistics at hyperlog.info If these noobs will be inviting big companies, they better know how to make a map, that's not Hungary there and Europe has only one Slovakia8
-
As a self taught C programmer starting comp sci in University, WTF is all this object oriented-ness. Constructors, parents, children, inheritance, polymorphism... I feel like more like an anthropologist than a programmer.
(But really, I get why it's better. Just so hard to learn)14 -
I fucking hate group projects.
These fucking dumbasses that don't know how to write shit. "This is a software that connects to THE phone" in a fucking business letter.
I bet a fucking second grader can write better than this piece of shit.3 -
Screw League of Legends incompetent devs. They implemented a anti cheat solution that prohibits linux (wine) and VM users to play the game. This is really stupid. Better learn to play dota now...14
-
Fucking idiot lead dev who’s 10 years younger then me doesnt know fucking respect. Dumbass comes with every new framework there is:
- ow we should try abc.js
One week later
- now we should totally get in def.js. It’s soooo much better then abc.js!
Screwing up projects, asking for an extra pair of eyes and then asking wtf is this code.
Im out of here if we’re hiring toddlers for lead developers because they are willing to work 50 hours a week. I better get that raise soon.3 -
What really grinds my gears.
When a co-worker gives me feedback from a review of my code be like "you should use if..elseif..else instead of switch, because it performs much better.
in this case performing much better means it is only 25 pikosecond instead of 30 pikosecond in a function which is called apprx. 3 times a month in production *facepalm*
I'm always with "let's get maximum performance from our software", but c'mon... really?!???4 -
Ok seriously what the actual fuck is this even supposed to be
Narnia has have better bandwidth than this16 -
I contributed to my first open source project on GitHub. It is so much better and fun to do. Why have I not been doing this since 🤔😊😁
-
Worst part of being a dev?
For me it's putting myself into infinite loops wrestling with my own self doubt. Is this really how I want to solve this problem? Could this code be cleaner? Surely there's a better way to do this? Am I adding unnecessary complexity? Is this going to come back and bite me in x months? And so on...
In fact, most days I just feel like an imposter.4 -
Is there a point in debating iOS vs Android?
My friends keep fighting over which OS is better iOS or Android.
Both have almost all the features that the other one has and are constantly being developed by tech giants. There is no point in debating, it's just personal preference at this point.21 -
THE FUCK!!!!
Some stupid assholes on my company have adquired the idiotic habit to call me to supervise some videoconferences using Skype, Hangouts or other fucking systems that i never heard about. I hate it because is a big fat waste of time. You don't need a engineer to handle your stupid password mismatch, your "why this is so slow? can you fix the internet". Or why the sound is so crappy or why don't you have a better microphone. This are your fucking computers, and your fucking calls. what the next? sending your emails? Wipe your asses? is not my fucking role.
Next time I will put your notebooks inside your assholes. Your crap will be better transmitted for sure. -
A little back story:
A dev who left already implemented a system and modeled the data like he doesn't even care because he was going away in one month anyway.
This sucker here inherited the responsibility to remodel this fucking clusterfuck of data.
I was trying to do a good work here until today but some things came to my mind :
I don't care.
They don't care.
Fuck it.
I'm gonna do the same shit and the next person can suck ma'dick.
I have better things to do.
Look, I'm gonna do a lazy job that is gonna be a million light years better than what this sucker did anyway.1 -
WanBLowS Vusta is more stable than this piece of shit that you call code. Yet you call yourself a programmer? Goddammit, even the shit that I dump in the toilet looks better. Because at least that thing is honest about being shit, unlike this craptacular mess that you call an application. Maybe consider kill -9 $(pidof life).3
-
i think the better (or maybe just longer) you’re a programmer, the less funny memes get. i’m so sick and tired of them. when i started there was occasionally a funny one, now everything is annoying.
seriously, people find this shit funny?12 -
This app is exactly what I've been looking for! From what I can tell, it's a better resource than Reddit, StackOverflow, Twitter, etc to connect with other developers about the pains and perks of coding!5
-
Lord of the rings is my all time favourite movie and Samwise is my favourite character.
This quote keeps me going. Small act of kindness inspire me. They push me to be a better human being.
I cannot change the world, but I can do my small bit to make this world a better place.
Because there is some good in this world and it's fucking worth fighting for.8 -
Navbar is cool now, better than the older one. But can you please move this circle for creating a new rant to the right? Actually it's all over everything and really disturbs. And possibly also fade it Out when you scroll.3
-
so i'm new here. and i have to thank you guys/grils - this is so much better then any other social networks feed.
i love you <35 -
Microsoft's business suite is much better than Google's business suite.
If not for Google's monopoly in consumer market, MS would have easily taken over the consumer space as well. No wonder this company is acing their game in B2B space.
I can see myself migrating to MS ecosystem because fuck YouTube and Google Maps. MS has everything better now.
You know what MS did right?
They heard herd.
And this is what annoys me about Google. A company arrogant and adamant in their own approach that they even refuse to acknowledge a user's existence.6 -
Anyone else taking Harvard's CS50 via edX? It's so awesome! You get a better understanding of Computer Science and stuff. I'm loving C! It feels so close to communicating with the machine. Memory allocation fascinates me, too. Is this why it's fast? If you feel like you're lacking with the CS fundamentals although you can build apps or websites already, I recommend this. This is better than my whole years in college!9
-
So it's done. I signed my new contract with my new company after I left my old job. Better contract level, better pay, better benefits (at my old office they didn't even give me a pc. I had to use mine..)..
But the sad/funny story is that my old boss do not talk to me anymore because he can't understand why I'm leaving..sooo mature!
I really don't care because actually he do not deserve anything from me, he's (and forever will be) an arrogant prig without humility.
The only regret is leaving the co-workers I bound with..but I'm sure we'll be in touch.
Yep.. maybe this is definitely a rant/story!
Wish me good luck for this new adventure!2 -
Yesterday night I worked 2 hours on a side project.
This is the first time in 4 months this happens.
Feels so much better man1 -
What is this hate towards fullstack developers ? I suppose more you know the better ? I think you can specialize later, based on your work task.
Fullstack is the way for learning addicts as me.11 -
Do you think Project Managers should know what source control is and have a basic understanding of its concepts?
Do you think this will help them do a better job?7 -
My first programming experience was in highschool. Within two months I was a better programmer than my teacher.
This just indicates that the people who hire programming teachers need to know what programming is before hiring the wrong person.3 -
When you realize you had sharpening enabled in your monitor settings and you turn it off and shit just looks so much better...
I mean this is a necessary setting when using VGA but this monitor is connected via DVI!
Also some people just do not seem to notice this and leave this enabled on their screens.4 -
Disclaimer: I apologise in advance for those tired of language wars, if it bugs you that much just skip this rant.
"C++ is better than C"
An accepted truth. OO is better than Procedural, C++ is an upgrade from C, it fixed all the problems.
End of.
Except - when it comes to actual evidence, empirical studies have shown that there are no productivity gains with C++ vs C.
This bugs me the most because it's such a fringe view, OO has dominated industry purely by dogma, alternative programming paradigms are just simply ignored because: "OO is best. End of."
https://researchgate.net/profile/...22 -
so today we used putty and coded the exercise within the university's server. i wanted to use "tree" to see all the files better cause thats what i normally use. turns out i had to install it.
i type in "sudo apt-install tree"
screen: no root priviledges. <university_login> is not included in root.txt. this will be reported immediately.
i forgot i needed root priviledges smh i just wanted to see my files better XD7 -
"Microsoft team foundation" is my current motivation for keeping me wake up in the morning. This is just a small part in their header menu. You can do better than this!
-
"Ohhhh, I would love to try Android, but it is sooooo ugly..."
How to deal with an apple fanboy saying something like this every time I mention that apple could done better(their software or hardware)
???17 -
Me: This is a good article about a CSS problem I always have and can never remember how to fix. Imma bookmark that.
Me, the next time I have that problem: Dang. Why doesn't this work. Better Google it.3 -
took me about 6+ months to accept that relational database is better than blockchain. But since i am doing project involving -smartcontract- now, theres nothing i can do but to tell some people that blockchain is a good thing. please forgive me for spreading this technology... after i finish this project, i promise to never step on blockchain environment again4
-
Ask yourself as you plan the meeting:
1. Is an email a better solution to this?
If the answer is yes, plz just send the fucking email. Else, try and find a way to make it an email instead. If all else fails then yeah go ahead and have your stupid meeting. -
this is mostly how i feel today. we're all aware not much actually changes, but y'know, we survived this year, we get to celebrate a new cycle and hope for new and better things4

Me: *joins devRant once again*
"Wow this community is surely active! Better check frequently to keep up!"
*checks two times in 6 hours*
"Yea it was weekend. Probs everyone is getting their hands in a dirty pile of compileable code or a spaghetti of jQuery."
So, how is your day/night so far?25 -
Why do the java people say that java is superior over C#, when in fact it is more or less the same language? I never hear C# guys crying that their language is better, but I hear java guys all the time. And the fact is even that C# has more language features IMO makes it a better language. .Net is more or less the same as the Java API but we have had DateTime objects and a lot of good things, that Java is now copying, for a long time. Just curious on some ideas why Java is better now and forever no matter what times infinity, but why? And if someone is so stupid as to write that Java is the better language without reading this far then that proves my point. ps. Now that .Net and C# is being open sourced there is not the open source argument anymore either22
-
Hi , im new to programming and codings and my task is to make a output that outputs even number only ( not odd number) so i wrote this codes but its so complicated for me. Is there a better way to write it?
Thanks dears,,20 -
The best way to get an interview call is through referrals.
Recruiters are lazy. They don't want to sift through resumes coming from sites like LinkedIn. Referrals are usually better quality.
I'm not saying this. My recruiter friend is.2 -
People use this to argue why node is better. I instead use it to show why node sucks. More is less. Be ready for 3gb node_modules.12

Pretty much anything involving a computer?
Unrelated task -> this feels sorta boring, is there a better way... -> thinks about automating it -> starts coding2 -
American Express is proud to be the official card for Universal Orlando. It also uses Windows XP. WHAT IS THIS? WHAT ALTERNATE DIMENSION AM I LIVING IN? Meh, still better than Windows 10.1

!Rant
I got a co-founder for a thing I'm building.
Building this thing will only get better as all the struggles of building a startup thing get wurse.
Today, my rant friends, is a great day. -
I was lazy tonight and wanted to implement something of this kind very fast… is this really dumb or okay in your opinion?
If it's dumb, do you have a better and cleaner solution?18 -
When you open your laptop and see the mail, just a random day and you think nothing is gonna get better and you see 2 internship offer letter, after making many projects, year of study.

Why would a modern laptop come with a VGA port when it also has an HDMI port? I've managed to get by without VGA for years, with better image quality too. What is the reason for this? Is VGA still so prevalent that you need a backup port just in case the projector you want to use is old school? Don't they make adapters for that?
I know this is inane, but it's literally putting me off a purchase12 -
I appreciate if someone explains this to me:
Designers ask that we put three images in a grid layout on an Android device so that they can compare which image looks better, and guess what is changed in theses three images: font size changes one point in each image.
My question is: Is this normal? Designers need to see it on a screenshot to be able to decide which fits better?9 -
I'm curious to know how lucrative it is for the people operating those 0-points accounts to post spam comments on this kind of a platform. I don't know the exact numbers of course but I have to think looking for change in your couch cushions is a better return on investment.6

Sometime we forget who we really are.
We aren't dumb guys with no future and it's time to remember this to yourself.
We're losing time in our lives, let's just use it as we think is better to.4 -

If you want it and there's no better alternative, make it.
This is what has driven me for the past few years as I've fallen hopelessly in love with programming. I'm my own creator; my own God, if you will. -
Why do companies feel its ok to put dumb crap like this when their services go down? Shit like "oopsies" or "Oh no" doesn't make your users feel better about your shitty service.

Fuck this Apache Server on this elastic beanstalk!!! Nginx is so much better at configuration and ease of use!!!4

First !rant. I'm working on a 2d game using Game Maker at school and I just wounder if putting constants up this way makes you cringe. Is there a better way? This code is only run when switching to a weapon and he values can be put into the shooting script itself. I just want to know how you put in mass constants in general coding or even at all.6

New team, same discussions...
* Why should we use cmake? It is way better to add visual studio project files to the repository and allow everyone to mess around in the compiler setting dialogs. Nobody needs cmake if not targeting multiple platforms!
* clang-format? What kind of black magic is this? It is way better to manually try to stick with each source file's existing formatting - regardless of how messed up it is - and manually check that from time to time!
* Why should we use the latest visual studio 2019 compiler, if 2017 and 2015 do just fine? This way we can save license fees!

Just to mention a few highlights...13 -

Visual Studio Live Share is finally available for the general public! I beta tested this, it's great. Check it out:

Much better than pushing and pulling with git for pair programming.3 -
Writing a new tool, and it's looking pretty slick so far.
This is much better than meetings upon meetings. Maybe I should ask for a demotion so I can be writing code more often?6 -
Publishing stuff and receiving feedback and improvement ideas is sush a great feeling. A guy opend an issue today asking for a feature to be implemented and he was very polite. Thanking me for my work.
This is way better than money. Money can't buy that feeling. People like this guy is the reason open source stuff lives. -
Anyone else feels Silicon Valley is slowly dying? :(
This season ended too soon with very little to offer. No suspense. Less humour than expected and stretched events.
Hopefully next year is better.5 -
When I have to search something, i use duckduckgo rather than google. It gives better answers than google. Anyone with the same experience or this is only my mindfk?11

it's 1:30am and i'm working and i feel more productive and peaceful working this way (when there's no one and i can concentrate better). this is the developer life? i love it!4

New to programming but I want to create my portfolio, any tips? Where should I host it? WordPress is good for this or better write whole code?10

I found a new app called CodeMonk. This apps purpose is to teach you better and more optimised coding tehniques. Check it out, ranters!1

So finally i said goodbye to ubuntu forever but I stayed on debian have installed and setup crunchbang its performance is much better and this os is so lighter.
my wifi issue is fixed here didn't do anything at all. I'm loving this os
thanks all those guys who tried to help me fix wifi issue3 -
This place would be much better if we could ban idiots. I won’t give names but one wants to slit my throat and other is putin’s assole.11

Anyone else hates this kind of statements:
if ( doSomething() != SUCCESS ) {
//log error
}else {
//continue doing other stuff
}
I simply find that confusing. This is much better:
If ( doSomething == SUCCESS ){
//continue doing other stuff
}else {
//log error
}
Maybe just my opinion.17 -
Babel and webpack kicked my ass today. fuck you babel, and fuck u too webpack. neither one of u fucks is making my life any better at the moment. things were moving along, now my app just looks like this. something in this transpile garbage. I'm not missing '>' . it's just not transpiling correctly I think.8

my wife is setting up her new phone that arrived today. maybe i am a bit jealous. on the other hand i dont know how using devrant, reddit and duckduckgo justifies a new phone. better save this for my dream computer.7

I’m running 1.5km every day for two weeks already. Anxiety still strikes sometimes. Depression is measurably better, but it was getting better months ago when I started taking fluvoxamine, so I can’t attribute this to running alone.
Running will help me in another way though: my mental health will definitely be going through the roof when I look in the mirror and see the beautiful, albeit scarred, slender body I posessed before it all started.8 -
Oh YES! THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!
So, ive finally got better headphones, REAL headphones, not my old Wireless Gaming Headset...
and the difference IS NIGHT AND DAY! I cant go back anymore!
Beyerdinamic really knows their shit...3 -
Dear app, if you say that your update is for bug fixes, you better fix all those bugs instead of releasing and releasing an update with the same bugs still there. Better look into the UI/UX issues too. Your app looks horrible! Last time I was involved in it, everything is looking so fine I haven't had a bad review for a long time. Hope you can read this. #ktnxbye1

I've see this interface and i though this can be seen better with a Mark Up language, like HTML.
So i will send a message about this to improve this app. If You want, do It too.

After using React Native for about couple of months, I have to say that native application development is much better than this.4

I was away for a long time. Now I got a new job which means it's time to start ranting. Fuck this legacy code is worse. I mean, a fucking cat running after a mouse could write a better source code if he had somehow pushed buttons while doing its job. Every fucking best practice I know is crushed to bits. And the funny part is, this company/startup recently got $300.000 funding.2

A coworker wants to save telphone numbers as Strings in a database I don't get why he doesn't want to use Ints. I think it is stupid because it uses more space and you need to change the type if you want to use it to call someone. He says it is better this way because you can put there "+" and "-" for better readability.12

So this stupid fuck whose react code is a clusterfuck of bugs just bashed me when I said Java is better then node because of reasons...

So my school makes a survey each semester where students grade their teachers performance. This is all well and good.
Till I found out today that admin averages all the teachers scores for that class year. So all the good ones are worse and the bad ones are better off.

So fellow dev asked me design suggestion knowing that I did design way before, I provided him with ok-ish solution and he said to me: 'this is way better response than designer gave me!'. Is it ok to hate your old code?
I always say to myself "WTF is this? There's a better way of doing this" when I have to make some changes to some older project.
But, I see it as a good thing, it means that I've improved a bit since then.3 -

I really want to decouple classes from each other, but I also want to decouple them from any specific DI container, so this is what I came up with. Factory methods passed as arguments.
Is this bad? how would it be better done?2 -
A combination of life literally pushing me in this direction and my own interest in everything that is smart or complex.
But, I hope it serves as a stepping stone for me to achieve better things than being "just a programmer/dev" -

This last week I have been so excited about Artemis going around the moon. This is the kind of stuff that people need. Stop bickering about bullshit. There is a universe to explore!
I saw parts of the flyby today and it was really really cool. I hope NASA is getting incredible data from this. I cannot wait until we send people there again. Probably better to use robots, but going there in person is cool. -

I showed him a website I‘ve done in the past and that he could copy but edit the sidebar so it fits better to the existing website he had created. Now it looks like this:

I'm not proud of this, but I'm not sure there's a better way of doing this.
Context: texture sheets are massive, so I wanted them to be gced when possible. Problem is, during init, the gc kept collecting the sheets, which added a full 5-10 seconds to load times.
This ensures that the sheets stay in memory until everything is initialized.15 -
I'm new here and I don't know if this is a thing -
But I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in coding with me (+_+)
I didn't know of a better approach...13 -
I've probably spent more time on refactoring than on actual coding with this personal project. The problem is, ideas come to me while developing, and that means I have to go back and change things every time. Is that normal or is there a better way?3

fuck lazarus
fuck pascal
please people you get C, C++, rust, java, javascript EVEN BRAINFUCK is better than this fucking stupid and obsolete language.
The toolchain is just horrible. fpc, fp-compiler, lazarus...
Even in repos 3.0.0 is not the latest one. Like who the fucking cares about improving this language, please think of people who don't give a shit and freeze it already
language is slow
language is horribly verbose
language is CRYPTIC to debug
nobody sain would ever want to learn this language
10 years ago as a student I would pit on lazarus
today I still pit on it
now about lazarus...

Worst documentation I have ever dealt with is my own. I have gone back to programs, looked at it, and went, what the heck is even this. I've broken business critical programs just because I didn't know the extent of what I was changing. I've gotten better, because of events like that. OMG!!!!

This is how my login and authentication works
Check for cookie on request
if cookie doesnot exist, send login page ( login )
1) check for credentials
2) if valid, set username's JWT as cookie
3) reload page
4) proceed for authentication
If cookie exist, decode JWT ( authentication )
1) check username
2) if username exist on database, send user panel
Anything wrong with this ?? What is the better way to do this6 -
I was watching some mobile coding stuff and I've discovered Flutter.
I've seen a lot of people hyped for this framework, so I've downloaded a couple apps made with it.
Amazing UI and animations, but everything feels laggy.
Then I've tried it, and I don't see why all this hype. I fell better build mobile app on the "classic" way (Kotlin/xml). Is it me, or Flutter is overrated?7 -
So DTU just decided to update one of the central systems, they project that the system will be offline for about 12 hours.
Just so happens that IT'S THE FUCKING SYSTEM THAT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO USE RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
Just about everyone has to hand in assignments tonight! 🙄
Well, I guess it's better than deploying on a Friday... (it's Wednesday) IF IT WASN'T BECAUSE THE STUDENTS ARE ON FUCKING VACATION FOR THE ENTIRE NEXT WEEK!
AARGH!3 -
Serious question. And apologize if I sound stupid.
Why do people, especially here on devRant brag about Arch Linux?
What is so special about this OS?
What does this OS do better than Ubuntu, Debian, Kali Linux, Fedora etc?11 -

THIS SHIT

a(function(err,data){
console.log(err,data)

Leverage. This is a noun, there is already a verb: lever. If 'levering' something doesn't sound good, well, that's because it's not an appropriate verb for what you are describing. We're better than the Marketing dept, stop wastaging everyone's time.3

Which editor among atom or vscode is best?
I'm bit confused about this.
I mainly prefer Atom, but want to know what vscode can do a more better?11 -
So I have been using IntelliJ for two weeks now. Still failing to see how this is superior to Eclipse. It has crashed or locked up multiple times, makes dependency management needlessly complicated and the UI just plain doesn’t make sense. I don’t see anything here that makes this software worth $60 per month when my free software does everything yours does, but better.
Everyone on my team who is being forced to use it hates it and the money our company is paying for it could be used for better things like toilet paper with more than one ply.4 -
Redux is absolute fucking insanity. There is no way in hell there isn't a better way to do this. Absolutely unintelligible, convoluted piece of garbage.5

Working with others is always a great way to improve, no matter their skill.

Rest assured, folks.

It is always great when I download a major release of a software I love and it only gets better.
1Password new version is exactly that. It took a great product and made it better integrated with the laptops I use every day.
Not really ranting... but I wish this happened more often. -
Purple eye sockets and slightly wrinkled eye pouches when I smile. This is what a developer job gets me after all those hours of frowning my face at bugs all day.
Coding is affecting my health.
No, no, no, this has got to improve. I'm going to make sure I look better this year.2 -
! Not a rant about Linux being better than Windows.
I used to ignorantly think that but experience and awesome community's like this have taught me better.
At a previous job I worked with Linux for ages and git used to how streamlined it is when working with a console. I then moved to Windows (to make games I'm Unity3D, which was awesome!) and found myself pining for a decent console. I finally found ConEmu which has a multi tab feature!
Just wanted to share this, knowing it made my life way more fun!6 -
Hello my fellow Android nerds! Spent the last few hours coming up with this...
Surely there is a better/easier way? -
From experience, what are the pros n cons of a standing desk?
Is this considered one or is a full desk better?
Biggest concerns are the cables and the weight/stability. Can I liftit or lower without it quickly dropping or the monitor falling over.

I know this has been before but what is better to use for HTML CSS JavaScript and PHP, Sublime or another text editor?6

Since this week's rant topic is enterprise software, I thought why not take an existing enterprise application and make it better for my next project. What enterprise software do you use and/or want to see improved?5

This is the first social media I actually like. Came from codingconfessional because there's way less cancer here. Y'all rock.
I left a '# fix this thing here' in production code :/ I make myself feel better by pretending it's a hashtag.2 -
I'm not even going to bother fixing this code that sends 3 error alerts per error. More alerts is better than no alerts. At least the damn things are getting caught.1

Creating my first mobile application in Xamarin Forms. Still figuring out how that framework works, but I'm excited!
Application is for my internship. Helping students study better with metacognitive strategies.
I don't even know what it is, so this is going to be fun. -
I don’t really think this makes me a better dev, but playing guitar and watching tv shows helps me relieve some stress. Also, spending time with my fiancée. If anything, my job made me a worse dev, which is sad and ironic.

This is not a rant!

This is fucking nuts.
So my grandma asked me if I could convert all of her VHSs into digital form (not said in these words ofc) so I said yes.
Oh boy, what a mistake have I done.
I bought this EasyCap converter for like 11$. Alright, so I plug it in, and the RCA IS MONO. WHY IS IT MONO IF IT SAYS STEREO ON THE BOX?????????
Okay, I said to myself that I would buy something better than this campfire material. So I bought one. Low and behold, the software that came with it is fucking trash. I had to find another program to capture the capture card output. So I tried NCH software. So I tried it and it works. WONKILY. VEEEERY WONKILY.
CAN'T YOU JUST MAKE BETTER DOCUMENTATION, MYGICA? PLEASE!!!!!!! I WASTED 3 WHOLE DAYS TRYING TO FIX THIS, I HAVE THINGS TO DO FFS3 -
i was wondering Is it true when people do drugs they code alot better?
All where I see this concept.6 -
Got an offer letter today and have to decide by tomorrow. I don't what to do about it. The offer/company is good but not awesome. Should I wait for something better or should I accept this. I don't know, I am really confused.14

So, finally deployed project on heroku instead of 'webspace' or 'cPanel File Manager'. So fucking excited and happy that boss agreed for this. After countless explanations why it's heroku is better, he agreed. 😍

Corporate -> Startup -> Corporate
Well this corporate is based in France and has a better reputation so hopefully my time here will be better -
They tried to mark him, they even tried compacting him and his children, but this old generation instance is not going down without a fight. So I just failed my maths exam.
Nothing more to say except all other courses have way way better grades than my course.
So my teach's got two courses and both of them massively fucked up, course average (both) 4.5-5.6 (d- - f).
All other courses are just Soo way better that I just can't believe that fault is only on the student side here.
And to top it off, this scenario is not new at all.
Had the same shit with our courses failing unlike the others anothet time too.

In a normal application with front and back separated, how do you guarantee consistency between models? Do people normally do PRs to change them on both sides and hope none screws up or is there a better way?
Some time ago I was looking into generating stuff from the OpenAPI spec. Is this a good idea? Also, can graphql help with this? I'm soooo confused by this, it's like a problem I never managed to solve in my head...5 -
Why the GMail API docs and example were sucks, thats totally not cool! Yeah I need your API right now, but wtf is this docs, its so fcuking ugly. Even my swagger generated docs much better than this... Arrrrghh!2

I'm having a bad time using this Gnome. How could you say this is better than Unity? I think it's not.12

Do you ever end up in this situation where both you and the other person end up thinking the other person's idea is better and now you can start discussing again?

Remind me again why we have to use/support a weird entity creating framework across all microservices? So that every entity is consistent? (Who cares? Microservices shouldn't) Because hibernate is hard? (It isn't, and it's better documented than this, which needs hibernate anyway).
I'm just building a fragile distributed monolith. -
so I have both PyCharm and VScode running for the same project. It’s React Redux Django so my servers and stuff are running through pycharm while i edit and code on VS cause PyCharm is crap for react and javascript.
But VS cant seem to run my crap without additional steps which PyCharm does for you automatically like the virtual env
Is there a better way to do this or is this my life now?4 -

CMake with CLion on Windows is driving me crazy, I can't make it work even if I follow the guides :/
There is some better automation tools(for mouse/GUIs users) where I can setup my dependencies in a more straightforward way rather than learning/trying-to-understand this scripts? -
So I have noticed if I think I know much of logic in programming and I can solve this problem better way I actually code better.
And when I think no I'm just a noob programmer I ask stupid question to myself and get my self confidence blown.
Thing is don't think you are bad, think of just you'll put all the experience all the knowledge you got in this program (according to its requirement) -

Me and @asafniv cannot settle this argument and we need your conclusion.
What syntax makes more sense, Objective-C or Swift?
In my opinion, Swift's syntax is better than Objective-C, but Asaf's opinion the the opposite.
We failed to settle this argument and that is why we need YOU to give us your opinion.
In the comments I will send 2 identical functions, one is written in Objective-C, and one is written in Swift.17 -

What do you think is better.
PS. there is literally NO other communication service that can structure it exactly like this. Only discord is powerful and FREE to do it like this.
- Rocketchat isnt flexible enough to do this
- Slack requires me to pay first so i can do this
- Teams too
So fuck all of them I'll stick to discord unless someone can name me 1 single alternative service capable of structuring channels like this for a real time communication for FREE25 -
Meeeen this is crazy. The director created a testing route inside the actual api controller instead inside the spec file. Common man. We better than this. 🤦🏻♂️2

This begs the question: how do you define being good at programming? How can you tell if you are actually good or just think you are?
Having asked that, I think I’m getting there... by reading other people’s code, by listening to feedback from better devs than I am, by asking questions and discussing matters I may not fully comprehend, by reading books and articles, by trial and error and by constantly seeking new concepts, languages and other relevant matters to learn. That’s how one becomes better - when one is good, is another story altogether. -
What would all you guys say is a good (preferably easy) language for writing CLI applications? Something that runs fast, the less dependencies at runtime the better, and (this goes lower on the list)of thess logic required for argument handling the better.26

There is something that bothers me at this moment, so basically I started structuring my methods like this: methodName({id}, {auth}) instead of methodName(id,auth), I did this so that I have to specify the id and auth inside the object variables in method and not be able to inverse the order, at this point I think that I did something extremely stupid and doesn’t make any sense or it is good for better strcturing, your toughts ?
P.S. Should have used typescript from the beginning4 -
When the final card is checked off and you realize the past year and a half has been spent making this absolute monster of a service. There really is no better feeling.
-
Its hard to manage people in a development team if someone is behind and not willing to learn and being a happy go lucky programmer with someone helping cleaning up his codes 😭 better solution is to rolloff this resource 😈2

last day before holidays starts. It was horrible so much to do, organizing, meetings and still no end...
but the rain is droping on the window and this sound make my feels much better1 -
Online resources that discuss testing recommend the following pattern when writing your unit test method names:
given[ExplainYourInput]When[WhatIsDone]Then[ExpectedResult]()
This makes developers write extremely long test method names.. and this is somehow the acceptable standard? There must be something better.. I think I've seen annotations being used instead of this.5 -
I just felt like saying as I'm not sure how prevalent this is but the reason I got into computing and programming is essentially this, I want to change the world and make a better society and to quite frank I honestly believe that what you make and it's impact on people is far more important that your personal character5

Why the hate on JS? This isn't me trying to start some dumb war on what is better. I just genuinely would like to know why people specifically hate it.12
-
Working with Python, one annoyance is, it does not have a solid dependency management. Sticking to hand writing requirements.txt and manually maintaining and upgrading dependencies and also manually updating requirements.txt is a horrible pain in the ass.
Wish there was a better way to do this similar to npm and gem.3 -
Is it only me who sent an email & awaiting stickers!! @devRant, if my stickers are not ready can you send me a better smiley? I don't want to look at this sad smiley on ma laptop ;)

What's with the resurgence of mechanical keyboards? Things are supposed to get better, not recycled.
This is technology, not fashion.
For me, the flat scissor switch keys on laptops have the best feel, speed and ease.8 -
Does anyone know the best way of doing GPU stuff in C? I have a cuda enabled GTX 1050, but the cuda drivers screw everything up on machine for some reason.
Is there a better way to do this without the cuda drivers?6 -
What the f**k is it that all companies want to use JIRA? It's really crap; looks awful, is slow and overly complicated. And most of the time used and configured wrongly.
Are there even any better options out there or is this the only thing we have to live with?7 -
I try to find new stuff which is related to what I already know or is close. I like learning new technologies and techniques 😄. By this I continuously gain more knowledge thereby making me a better developer.

I recently got into an argument with a random person on internet about the new Corsair XENEON FLEX OLED, the new fancy one that you can make curved or flat…
In my opinion it doesn't make any sense, curved is better, in particular with a 45" display, so it's a cool technology but useless in this case.
Apparently this guy thinks "for work is better flat, for gaming curved".
It made me thinking… really?
There is someone out there (and maybe here) that uses huge flat monitors or when have 2 puts them parallels to each other and not turned towards himself at an angle?
It seemed a random bullshit, but maybe I could find some valid arguments why "flat is better for work" or not. 🤔12 -
There is such a thing called "building wayyyy too many features in the product that 99% of the user base won't even care about"
I think that management does it because of this mentality, "The more features we have, the better our product would be".2 -
What do you think about this?

I will need a new laptop soon and I want to go back to Linux. Is it worth it to go for something in there, or is it better to get a any other machine?3 -
So this my final year as an IT student, and I need to make a desktop app for the college which is about monitoring and diagnosing network flow and connected hardware, the question is: is there any stuff that can help and will it be better to use a specific language ?3
-
I keep hearing: "Laravel is better than CakePHP", "CakePHP is just for prototyping, not for serious development", "if you want to do it properly, use Laravel", "Laravel is a lot more powerful than CakePHP" etc. etc.
Why is it that people think Laravel is so superior?
Anyone who can give proper arguments for this? because when I ask those persons tho elaborate, they can't...10 -
Just got into investing and now I'm addicted. This is better than games. Hope I used all my time and money in investing instead of games. Good thing I don't play games anymore (nft games excluded).11

I wanted to ask some of you who might know better, i have been working as a backend developer in a tech company for about 8 months now. This is my first ever job so dont know about other companies. Is it common that frontend teams get more spotlight interms of features than backend ? Is this common or is it just the company i work for?4

ORM feels like, I can do better than that, with more predictability (like naming, table creation, and stuff).
The only pro, is hopes for inter-dialects interop (SQLite-Postgres-MySQL-MariaDB).
OK, I also want SQLite-MongoDB interop, because of the cheap price; but this is difficult. -
Hostinger have better customer service than Bluehost. Why is that ? I tried this like 5 times already.5

I was thinking about installing Linux on my laptop and I was reading about the various distros for beginners and I came across Arch Linux, it seems not to be liked by this comunity. Why is it? What distro would be better?8
-
I've been working on an ERP system these days. Learned how to properly use AJAX and JS. Also, my code is so much organized now, I can really say I'm a better dev now than I was before and this particular project is making me give my everything everyday.

Building an AI enabled image transformation product similar to Cloudinary with better functionalities, pricing and flexibility. Targeting B2B clientele.
What is your opinion on this?3 -
I'm thinking about creating a chat app in Azure/c#/websocket. Is this a bad idea in terms of costs or will I be better off going something like node JS/aws?9

New year, new Google HashCode!!!
I need a new stupid name for my team, last year "SicroMoft" by @Fast-Nop was great, but this time I need something even better (or worse)
Also, who else is participating?6 -
Been building a Shopify app for 2 months now. Every time I look at the code, Im adding more feature. Fuck. At this rate I'll never have people telling me how shit of an app this is to make it better.
-
Typical discussion here between a fullstacker, frontender and designer: its this functionality, no its that functionality. But parents and childs. But javascript! No i want this to be this name. No that name is better. Im in the middle of this :(1

So as I rewrite the same code I’m
Reminded of why I’m rewriting the same code.
Screw you Colorado !
This rant is better indicative4 -
Typescript is so fucking frustrating sometimes to deal with
The snippet above AND below do the EXACT SAME FUCKING THING. But because you double tap, it loses the fucking (not needed) type before the mapTo. If you aren't paying attention, you get this extremely fucking aggravating wall of red.
God damn it, can't this be better? RxJS is pretty fucking important, so why is this so god damned hard to just get some coherent fucking code highlighting!?

Teacher: New idea. Let's use excel for a better management with oop.
*you give a hard think* Alright I can see how this would work
*ten minutes into it* WHO IS HE? THE DEVIL? -
Had to refractor and abstract some code into an angular 2 component so it can be reused by another. Well I could have just copied and pasted the code from component 1 to 2, that would have been a lot more faster than making this piece of code separate. The later is better, removes code duplicate and your code reads better.

Hey Everyone, Can anyone suggest me which profile pays better between a software engineer and cloud engineer. According to this post https://interviewbit.com/blog/... software engineers get 0.8M per year and cloud engineers get Rs 7,51,756 per annum. Is it correct?
-
Ok see this "trend" of adding a number 2 to a class name. To denote the new version of an object, surely I'm not the only person who thinks this is horrible. E.g Entity2, Renderder2 etc. It just creates a really bad API, I understand it's needed for backwards compatibility, but honestly there must be a better way....5
-
Made fun of JavaScript and told millions why Python is better than all other languages on this fucking planet. But still...7
-
This has been a tough year. I thought my wife was going to divorce me but now, at least today, things are better. I’ve come to realize that whatever the issue is, you just have to keep moving forward.4

What do you think, is this bad practise?
boolean isNumber = true;
try {
Integer.parseInt(somestring);
} catch (NumberFormattingException e) {
isNumber = false;
}
Or is it better to create a method to check, even though I only use it at one place in 700 lines of code?6 -
Ive always used Photoshop to produce my website drafts for customers, is there any alternatives to this that works better?6
