Client: "Hi, there's a problem with this link"
Me: "How odd, I'll take a look right away"
-- 19 minutes later --
Client: "Has this been fixed?"
Me: "I'm working on it currently"
Client: "OK please let us know when it's done"
Me: "I will do"
-- 2 minutes later --
Client: "Hi, is this done?"
Me: "I've just told you I will let you know as soon as it's done"
-- 5 minutes later --
Client: "Hi, sorry to hassle, but is this done yet?"
Me: *starts twitching*
Me: "I am working on it and I will let you know when it's done"
Client: "OK, well don't worry about it, it doesn't really matter"
Me: *explodes*10 -
Relatives: You're a computer guy, right, what are you working on these days?
Me: *should I bother explaining, should I not* Oh, just some stuff.
R: Oh come on, tell us, how difficult can it be?
M: *sigh* I'm working on a custom garbage collector for-
R: !!
They're now under the impression that I'm involved in collecting rubbish from bins. Sigh. My hair doesn't help here, either, lol (I have one of those tangled, unruly mops of hair)
This will take time to explain.18 -
I've been asked to do some investigation at work regarding an IT security incident. Thankfully I've watched plenty of CSI so I'm just working on building a GUI with VB to track the IP...7
-
No, I don't know why your keyboard isn't working. I'm a web developer. Have you tried turning it off and on again?2
-
Oddly enough, it's comforting to hear other devs mumble "mother fucker" or "what the fuck, you stupid piece of ass" when working on things.
It means I'm not alone and we can all suffer together 🤗3 -
Boss: "Why weren't you in the project meeting? You were supposed to present!"
Me: "I'm not on that project, Bob was before he quit."
Boss: "Yeah, but I assumed you'd take it over. We need you to be working on it."
Me: "What? I don't know anything about it, nothing."
Boss: "Yeah, but you guys went to lunch together, what else would you have talked about?"8 -
I love coming home from classes to get some work done on my setup.
My thought is; if I'm going to be sitting here for hours at a time working, may as well make it a comfortable environment.45 -
I need to render point clouds in OpenGL for a project I'm working on. The problem is it just becomes too damn slow when the point cloud size increases. So I'm trying to use LOD methods and nested octrees to speed things up. Also, I need to render text too in my OpenGL scene. So now I'm stuck trying to show proper labels using Qt and OpenGL which is completely pissing me off by the way. And I'm not doing the actual speeding up thing I was working on earlier on and before that I was working on the actual function of my program. So I'm now deviated from the deviation.
Fuck my brain.4 -
Working on a fuck off/you message service. You can easily generate a fuck off/you message and send it to someone.
No clue why I've (nearly) made it, maybe because I'm sick at home and wanted to make something.
It's nearly working though, yay.16 -
Told someone I'm working on an 0Auth server/library.
*but that already works/exists, why re-invent the weel?*
Because although it indeed already exists/works, I'd rather re-invent the weel and also throughout the process learn how it works in depth than just using an implementation and not learning much new (when I've got time, of course)!10 -
I'm proud to announce a new project made by myself and @thejohnhoffer, that started on devrant.
We started collaborating after I made a rant about machine learning and, since then we've been working hard on a plain language blog that simplifies machine learning concepts.
We call it learn-blog.
Check it out at ironman5366.github.io/learn-blog15 -
"Hi! I love your work on github! I'm planning a cryptocurrency exchange and am currently looking for a developer to work with. Would you be interested in working with me and if so, how much would it cost?"
*reply*
>His face when he sees my hourly rate7 -
So now I'm working on my first collab with a fellow devRanter on a privacy website thingy! Excited and want to start working on it right away.
BUT OH NO I'VE GOTTA GO TO WORK IN 15 MINUTES TO STAND BEHIND A TABLE PACKING MOTHERFUCKING BOXES ALL DAY, YEAH NO THAT SOUNDS FUCKING COCKSUCKING EXCITING. (okay I can pay rant but still).
I need a hug 😞41 -
Hai devs!
Team devRant here.
Some sad news, my teammate can't participate for reasons I don't need to disclose.
I'm not stopping though, I'm going in alone! (Or well, physically).
I'll post the link to the updates (and more) site later on but the important part:
It starts at 12pm EU/Amsterdam time and stops tomorrow at that same time!
Working on a livestream =)
Cheers!9 -
The office toilet chronicles - episode 3
Someone left shit on the toilet seat. That's right. Shit. On the toilet seat.
This is the second time this happens. I'm working with fucking monkeys here. One of these days they'll start throwing feces at each other. I just hope I'll be long gone when it happens.13 -
I just fucking despise working on someone else's code and it's filled with errors like "reciever" instead of "receiver" or "mesasge" instead of "message"...
it fucking leads to an astonishing amount of fucking errors just because I know how to write english words AND I'M ITALIAN WTF18 -
while working on a website, I left a line of php code that echo's 'it fucking works' when a call is successfully made to the server. Two weeks later it hits me while I'm in bed that I never removed that line.5

Dev related: To actually finish my projects instead of working on different ones, and end up finishing nothing.
I said I was going to create my own operating system. I started it, but barely. I haven't touched the compiler I was working on for months. Oh, and I'm working on an android app related to writing. I started it a while back, and never got to finish it.
My need to stop starting new projects, because if I keep doing this, I'll never finish anything.
Non dev related: To get my manuscript out of the slush pile, and finally published. It's currently in the dreadful querying process.4 -
Been working on a bug fix for 3 hours. Literally nothing I do will fix it. Finally I realize I'm not even calling the function.5

!rant
Just finished the new voting system for the school representative of my school, tomorrow ~600 students (including me) will use it, feels good! :)
Btw, I'm 16
Also, I am working on another project if anyone wants to take a look and give me some design feedback, as I learned everything I know by myself (It's in German though, I'm from Austria)37 -
About a year ago I switched my job.
At the start everything seemed like magic. I was the It director, I've finally was able to call the shots on technologies, on new software architecture.
First step was to check the current state of the company.
"qqqq" as each pc password? Ok
No firewall from outside? Lovely
Servers running on Windows Server 2008? Spectacular
People leaving pc on after work and left the machine unlocked just not to type the password? Hell yeah
The IT dude playing games instead of working? But ofcourse
Plaintext passwords publically accessible eshop? Naturally.
The list goes on and on.
After all this time, I'm working to fix every hole like that like crazy and because it doesn't show results, I'm soon to lose my job. Well better luck next time as an intern I guess :')19 -
Me: Hello. I'm from dept. ABC. My system isn't working.
IT: Have you tried logging OFF & ON again?
Me: (Let me rephrase) No the system isn't turning ON 😅
IT: Before I come over to your desk, can you try restarting once? 🤓
Me: (Motherfuck..) 🙂5 -
For a while now I've been working on a personal project called Cadmium which is a NLP library for the Crystal programming language. Over the past several months the star count on GitHub has been rising and I'm happy to say I'm almost to 100 stars!
Just wanted to share my excitement with the community. If you want to check out the project you can find it at https://github.com/watzon/cadmium18 -
So I pretty much deleted 90% of the project I'm working on and pulled two all nighters to reimplement the features differently because it didn't feel "good enough"... fuck this neverending "I can do better" feeling 😭😭6
-
Well I did it guys. I'm officially a Software Engineer.
I'm feeling serious imposter syndrome. Working on telling myself that I'll be OK though.8 -
Past 3 years I've been working 1pm-9pm instead of usual 8am-4pm at our company, no issues, I'm the only developer on the projects I work on, tasks delivered always on time, meetings with PM always afternoon, etc.
Few months ago company hierarchy changed and the new operative manager started to harass me about this with made up reasons (not working 8 hour or not working at all) and he doesn't care about the fact that my projects might be the only ones at the company that never missed a deadline. He even turned some of my colleagues against me.
So now I'm thinking about to quit this job and go freelance or find a remote job. Am I doing it right?7 -
So yeah. There is some problem on production. I'm working on it for over a day, and can't make it work. The bad method is 500 lines. The method that calls it is almost 1000 lines and its class is 5k. This is the second one. FML :(16
-
End to end encrypted (maybe decentralized?) social network including shit like voice/video/group calls.
Privacy site I'm working on right now.
Yeah that's it for now :)12 -
Feel free to scroll by if you feel like it.
I am just very excited this evening because with today's commit I have reached a very important milestone in my side-project development. As of today all the [so far] 12 components are all working together and processing the main flow themselves.
No special functions, no test data in the code, nothing like that. A client is able to do its thing now as it should.
I know it doesn't sound like much, but as I'm working on this gigantic beast for 3 years now this milestone is hell of a reward for me!
Just wanted to share :)
edit: f* it! I'm getting a cake!4 -
Just went through my first week of working while on chemo. Life is hell and I'm contemplating not being a part of it anymore. It's only going to get worse and worse.8

Minecrafters, come here :)
So, as I wrote before, I'm working on a custom minigame network called Silverfern, I've planned the grand opening for the 1st of February, which is my birthday. Now, the minigame base and 1 fast minigame is ready, the only real thing we have to finish is the punish system (ban/mutes) and a quick anticheat. I need to finish them before the grand opening, I hope I'll be fast and code good enough.
I've started working on it 1.5 years ago, I hope we can see on the server on February the 1st!11 -
My Android phone is 5 years old. Everybody tell me I should buy a new one but I'm a stingy environmentalist and I refuse buying new stuff if it is not strictly necessary.
So, for 9€ I replaced the phone battery and then I installed a custom ROM, so it looks a bit newer.
Unfortunately, it seems that something in the network configuration has been fucked up.
The phone is able to browse the Internet, but:
- WiFi hotspot is not working
- USB tethering is not working
- Bluetooth tethering is not working
- PPP over USB is not working
But, hey, I never give up, so this is my current setup:
- I installed a proxy server on the phone
- I'm using "adb forward" to forward the proxy port from the phone to my laptop
- I configured Firefox to use that proxy
And, yes, I'm using that connection to write this post. :D8 -
After four months of working alone, finally got another developer at work. Unfortunately they hired him as my boss. He came to me yesterday with a new project and told me to drop everything I'm working on for it. I asked him the timeline for it, a week. Why. Why the fuck. Go fuck yourself.16
-
The project manager and sales team decided to call a meeting to see how long a project I'm currently working will take to finish. Little did they think to ask the only person working on it.4
-
A web developer has started working on my windows.
How should I communicate with it that I don't want a website outside my windows? Will this be considered a covid layoff if I just throw it off the said window? 🤔
P. S. I'm talking about a spider, icymi.12 -
I'm working on the scariest looking electronic thing that I've ever built.
It started to terrify me more today...17 -
The codebase I'm working with hss rarely comments on it. But when there are comments written they are shit like:
//Kill Matt
//don't ask me where that hard-coded value came from, it just works
//we have to add the elements to the fucking list
Reeeeally helpful. Yep.2 -
So I'm working on an CLI right now that fetches data from a website and downloads other stuff based on that data etc bla bla. And since its async it can fully taste my whole internet speed (130Mb/s).
So everything's good and I started working on a new feature. I started the app and it worked... For 3 minutes. After that it just stopped. It didn't even freeze or anything. After 2 hours of debugging and 3 cans of coffee I was so frustrated I just wanted to watch some YouTube and relax. That's the moment I realized I didn't even have internet. I hate my ISP...4 -
99.999999% of the reason I like UWP is because of the Acrylic. It is a pain in the ASS to use otherwise.
Here's a small pixel art program I'm working on I guess. -
On my first week in the internship, I have to create a small website and it has to be finished ASAP. So I used Bootstrap.
After finishing I tested the website in chrome debugger tools for every screen size (design responsiveness), it was working fine. My stupidity was that I haven't tested on actual mobile/tablet.
The site was live, I send the link to one of my friends and he said "why everything is so small? looks like I'm browsing on PC". I quickly grab my phone and visited the site and it was not responsive on mobile. Started to check the code again, tested again on chrome tools it was working. But not on mobile. Changed the bootstrap file but no fucking changes on mobile.
After few moments of thinking, I realized that I haven't included the "meta viewport" tag. I felt so stupid and it was kind of embarrassing for me.
Now I first include meta tags before working on new project.5 -
I never have anything useful to say in standups because all my stuff works. which can make it seem like i'm not working on anything.4
-
The bad thing about programming is that you can copy paste working code from a previous program on the same machine, same IDE and it still won't give a fuck.. I'm currently here.2
-
A very rudimentary bedroom project management system. Each note is a different section of the program I'm working on.
I do this at night to make extra money, so it's not exactly the best system. It works though.
Have a visual representation of progress somehow motivates me.7 -
Just a moral story.
It's been a few years I've been using Linux for deployments.
And currently I'm working on a project that has Win on the Server so I'm working on the necessary installations and configurations and I caught myself actually reading everything in the installation and configurations dialogs. And I'm having this urge just to click next and get it overwith.
But thank you Penguin almighty for thee hath introduced patience and knowledge into mine soul. Or else...
... I would've fucked the whole system by a click lol6 -
So I just lost my job because I wasn't 'working hard enough'.
I'm the hardest working person there, everyone else just stands around and talks, but they don't do anything because they're union members (I'm agency so I'm not) and the union follows up on the smallest things.
That would be bad but not earth shattering if I had savings, was up to date on rent, didn't have the bank and various loan companies hounding me, and I still possessed the will to live, but that's not the case.
I'm sick of this constant barrage of shit that the world is chucking me and I just want to go lie down on the train lines and wait now. Fuck this world and the shit it constantly gives me :'(8 -
Current lappy got about 4GB RAM and not enough cores. I can't even run krita without it slowing down more the more I work on a file.
It would be frustrating if only I wasn't so depressed.
So yeah, due to being broke and lack of nerves, I'm gonna completely stop working on the comic for now.22 -
On my last project the customer gave really high reviews and asked me back as a senior engineer. First day back I meet the new PM and ask what I'll be working on.
He responds, "We have a printer that's not working..."
Of course I'm like wtf but then it quickly becomes apparent I'm writing the interface instructions between the software and printer....
Still, I'm back as over priced tech support to fix a printer! -
Ok so I'm releasing (in about two weeks) a massive project that my self and other talented people have been working on for about 2 years.
I feel like I want to puke all the time now. God I hope it is okay. 🤢
I'll let you all know what it is if all goes well so I'm not embarrassed if it does not
Wish me luck😐12 -
Working on my Google Foo Bar level 4 challenge.
9 days past figuring out how to solve this problem..
And finally reached on a working solution. When started compiling my solution.
And then i Find out, the fucking Google tool is facing some bug and not allowing compilation. Tried hard to do everything but still getting errors...
And after searching on Google just found I'm fucked up.. It's on Google's end and they are not fixing it since so many days..
Just 5 days left to complete.. And i have no idea what should i do...
4 month work just fucked up9 -
So, what are you all working on right now? Let's get some screen-shots in here!
I'm working on my "BrowserBandit" software - it reads a firefox or chrome profile and extracts saved user/pass combos, history, and autocomplete entries.19 -
I hate it when I'm working on something and then I have to eat/drink/take a piss/shit. Come on, body, just let me fucking work4
-
We have this important product with deadline closing in. Dev who was working on it for months went on vacation. Bugs came out, no comments in the code, no docs, some of the variables are as verbose as var abc = "some weird shit"; and I'm tasked with trying to test, fix algorithms and instruct on how to use it.
This isn't first time happening, so I'm dusting off my CV this weekend.5 -
Hey guys I'd like to share a Lua-based shell I've been working on the past few years. It's entirely complete, allows for all windows and Linux commands. I've been working very hard on it so I'm super excited to share it with you all. Here's the source.

[...] great! Nice to hear from you that you've got experience using C#! Our shipping company will also need a mobile interface for our IBM AS400 relic older-than-the-pyramids server, can you do that?
Me (a little displeased about the idea of working on a pre-existing legacy server): yes sure, I'm working on a Android project right now, so I'm learning a lot about it lately, I think it's totally feasible
Them: oh, but we are using a windows mobile device
Me (wondering why they are still using Windows phone): I can look it up and let you know btw
> Windows Mobile /= Windows Phone
> Deprecated since 2010
I'm fucked.4 -
I assume this only happen in my country (Malaysia). We have multiple inconsistent lockdown...
So most of us went from working in the office to Working From Home. During this time Our employers expects us to clock in to Zoom Meetings or Dingtalk meetings for 24 /7 , microphone must be turned on and camera must be turned on at all time, other wise it consider as a void(that means salary deduction, not consider working) .
Employers here have the mentality of ""IF I DON'T SEE WHAT ARE DOING WITH MY OWN EYE , I CONSIDER YOU ARE NOT EVEN WORKING.".
I'M sick of this shit tbh.11 -
First rant (well, first on devRant anyway)! So, I'm working on a project to refactor a decade old codebase so that all references to ip addresses are in config. It sucks. But I did find an ascii art fish in an old cron script, so that's something.9
-
Want to switch to Linux so bad right now. Getting tired of Windows and its shit. It took 12 minutes just to shut down!!! I'm just holding back until I finish this project I'm working on for Uni so I don't mess things up. After that it's goodbye Windows!
What distro should I try first? ;)20 -
So much mess is in this project I'm working on that I wonder which AI would be capable of handling it.3

Quick rant!!
Deadline in 2 days, working with a team.
Me: yo ! , How's the xyz feature? Is it working now?
Teammate: yah, made it work yesterday.
Me: epic! Can you present it to me?
Teammate: wtf, it's not working today!!
Me: no worries, you can sort it out!
Teammate: the latest release you worked on doesn't work properly.
Me: yah, merged code fucked up, I'm fixing that, I'll push a fix today.
And the cycle continues... -
Boss: oh so you are working on that unrealistic 3week project ? Let me also assign you some completely unrelated office work.
Me: But I'm a programmer, researching other companies and contacting them looking for new projects is not part of my job descrip...
Boss: oh don't worry I'm sure you'll do great!
Me: that's not what I'm sayi...
Boss: ok I have to go now, have it ready by tomorrow!
Me:(crying internally)...ok.6 -
Working on a module in an old shitty system. It takes 150 seconds to boot the fucker for debugging, which gives me one minute of debugging before the inevitable crash. Four minutes of debugging costs me 10 minutes of watching the loading splash screen.
I'm about to send my keyboard on a journey, straight through my monitor.2 -
I'm here at work working on my back end security code and my co-worker is watching the Emoji Movie.
I'm strongly against censorship, but this goddamn piece of cock shit makes me almost reconsider it. Noise canceling headphones are about the only thing keeping me from going that far.
//end rant18 -
Email (not a ticket) comes in this morning: "You need to make X change to y thing, yesterday!!" with of course the obligatory million + 1 Cc's including unrelated directors across multiple sites.
Me as my helpful self: I expected this request, I'll get it sorted asap
Director 1: *calls*
Me: I'm working on it
Manager: *calls*
Me: I'm working on it
Submitter: *calls*
Me: ignore
Director 2: *calls*
Me: I'm working on it
..............
As a bonus rant, after implementing the change, manager calls and criticises my technical explanation to the submitter who I know is fully capable of understanding the way it was explained 😂
Happy Thursday!3 -
I just broke 2 phones in two days... believe it or not... Both screens cracked and no swipe functionality survived...
I miss my fucking Nokia Lumia 930... that motherfucker was almost fully destroyed, screen cracked as shit, I could actually hold the screen on one hand and the rest of the phone on the other and it was still fucking working...
Needless to say, I'm going to Amazon and I'm getting a new Nokia phone, fuck LG, fuck Sony.2 -
Built a C#/.NET application with support for a serial device. Tested it on systems A, B, C initially, all Windows system, same .NET version, same targeting, same build tool version, same initial connection configuration etc, etc.
Testing - works on A and C, B nopes.
...
OK, let's check the source, is there something about B that makes it impossible to execute that bit? - No, there is not, you checked that already, stop poking around, it definitively should work on B.
...
OK, maybe admin privileges, there is I/O involved, didn't need that on A and C, but who knows - nope, doesn't work on B.
...
OK, maybe something wrong with the connection settings? First try at reinstalling driver - but no, it doesn't work on B.
...
OK let's try with another device - more/less devices on B. Other USB ports. No. Still does not work on B.
...
OK, this is stupid, but, is the cabling alright? It is, of course it is, stupid - but it still does not work on B.
...
OK, at that point I'm just gonna ask a colleague, GrumpySoftwareDev whether he has any clue why it doesn't work on B. GrumpySoftwareDev knows nothing, but discovers that one of his applications doesn't work on Windows 10. You know nothing, Jon Snow, but it doesn't work on B.
...
OK, now I'm just going to ask another colleague TheLastOfHisKind who handed B down to me somewhat bluntly if he ever experienced problems when working with B and its serial configuration. TheLastOfHisKind tells me he does not and kindly offers me some input on the situation. Still no progress to get it working on B but he hinted he might have fucked up B's driver. I already reinstalled the driver but didn't reboot, which comes after reinstall.
...
OK, I'm just gonna remove and re-install the driver, then restart. Hu! Now the UI is gone but another serial device reacted on a general call. Not fully working on B but we're getting there.
...
OK, I don't know, I'm getting frustrated, let's borrow another system D - which has roughly the same configuration as B - from my colleague StrongCurrentGuy. StrongCurrentGuy borrows me his system and cautions me not to break it. I install the driver, plug the device and copy the application from B. It just works on D. Not on B though.
...
OK, you know what. I'm done. For shits and giggles I'm gonna remove that driver again, reinstall it and restart, maybe it'll magically work afterwar- WHAT THE HELL, I JUST OPENED IT AFTER RESTARTING, IT JUST WORKS - ON B!
... seriously, what the fuck. But yeah, at least it works now.4 -
I've been toying with the idea of making a change to my working life for a while now. Its a big decision, and could affect something thats been working well.
But today I've made that decision ... and i'm going for it ... i'm going to leave my headphones in the office and stop carrying them in / out everyday.
Its a scary thought, but i'm ready for it. Wish me luck, see you on the other side!1 -
The new software to log in working time at my workplace requires Silverlight. I'm on Ubuntu. Basically after weeks of googling and trying different solutions, I decided that the easiest way to make it work was to install a virtual machine running Windows.
Right now I'm just trying to understand if there is some obscure reason for which they used Silverlight or if I'm just a complete noob who doesn't know jack.10 -
I'm working on a laptop in the shop and Explorer crashes. I try restarting it, and get RPC endpoint call errors. On reboot, I get this.
Russian roulette but 3 will probably crash instead of 1.11 -
Soo... I made a bytecode editor for Java just for fun. On the left you can see the original decompiled class, on the right a slightly changed class which still runs normally. Below you can see the pure ASM bytecode :)
It's pretty awesome for learning how bytecode works (together with a listing like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...)! It also has an AutoComplete feature and some syntax highlighting (which I'm still working on).
What's special about it? It's a pure text parser! It assembles a full class from just a String!
If you want to look at it: https://github.com/SuspiciousActivi...
(I'm new to GitHub, don't judge me :D)2 -
This is my first and current Rant/story so here it goes, I've been working for a company for past 10months now, where i was interviewed on Java, then i was put into mobile development and started to build an app in swift (successfully finished it) after two months i was working on ARKIT(didn't build anything BIG mostly R&D), then started working on React-native and built an app from scratch using firebase as backend (both RN and firebase was new to me) and pushed it to AppStore and PlayStore, and currently i'm working on Flutter!.. At first it was pretty irritating switching frameworks and technologies but now i've become more positive about it and i look at it as an opportunity to learn new stuff :)1

Call between Me and IT Assistant Guy working @ the Ministry of Education in my Country:

Me: *working on a project for a year solo*
Management: Let's move development to consultants
Me: I don't think we'll profit from that
Management: Yes let's do it anyways
Me: *switching between project management and working on another project for 6 weeks*
EMERGENCY MEETING
Management: We're not getting enough output
Me: What did I say?
I'm so fucking tired of this project fuckery. Cred to my boss, she's great, but this time they should've just listened to me.2 -
Dear modern browsers: The site I'm working on is NOT Portuguese. Don't offer to translate it when there are literally zero non-English words in it.
Fuck off.6 -
Fuck my boss.
He's making me do non-dev work that I'm absolutely not qualified to do and he's even writing to me on Slack to make me do some of it outside my working days.
I'm getting so fucking anxious whenever I'm trying to work with this shit because I have no fucking clue what exactly am I supposed to do.
FUCK14 -
So I've been working on this user friendly yet advanced youtube-dl GUI.
This is my current stage on the UI side. The program automatically downloads the latest releases of youtube-dl and ffmpeg.
What do you guys think? Do you like it? I'm open to suggestions.16 -
I'm c# developer and suddenly my manager has told client that I'm a powerbi expert and apparently have been working on it for like 4-5 years. No idea what to say...7
-
Sometimes when I'm working on some front end stuff, I'll forget that I should look at the local file and instead look at the version online. I spend about 5 minutes every time figuring why it doesn't change before I realize just how stupid I am. It gets me every time. Every gosh diggity darn time.2

My app made 18% more in 2019 than it did in 2018. I want to keep that going, and I'm working on another app I hope to publish this year.7

I'm the only one who after saying "nah, come on, I will backup it tomorrow, what could happen?", spends the day after by reinstalling Windows (after an awesome crash) and praying that the project he was working on for months is still there?1

So I wrote my first IoT thingy...
And I'm looking for more ideas/feedback to improve it. Atm I have a raspberry pi collecting temperature, humidity and light all on different intervals (because I taught it'd be a challenge to have them all on different intervals ^.^) and I'm displaying that data on http://11601615.pxl-ea-ict.be/iot/ (I'm working on making it pretty).
So any ideas/feedback?6 -
I'm working on a banking app (Android) and I thought: "This is a bank. An important one. They will surely have a good IT department! It will be a joy to work with them"...
Never have I been so wrong!3 -
Quick question, how do you guys find the energy/motivation to create side projects?
Currently, I'm working around 8 hours a day and afterwards I can't really think about getting on the PC as I know that I will burn out eventually and end up messing up the following work day.
Do you take a shorter work day? Do you work on non IT related side-projects? Maybe someone wants to discuss on how to avoid burn-outs and still have fun while working and doing side-projects? :) All ideas are welcome for this topic!11 -
I'm working part time as I'm a student and I always thought working in a company would be awesome as I learned programming all by myself and could actually do things now.
30% is updating, compiling
50% is using google to find out if I can even use 27 .net frameworks together and make it work on Android and iOS
15% is finding out what the error code is supposed to mean
And 5% is actually using a programming language.2 -
So I got a 1.7 grand laptop for free a week ago.
Fuck me, the company I'm working at is the best.
Hp elitebook 840 g5, 16 gigs and auto -crypting ssd.
Corpo life is the best. Shame it's got windows on it and I can't get linux on it.5 -
Hey ranters!
I'm here to ask a huge favor.
So I used to be on the app more frequently last year, but I started to work on a shit ton of personal/professional projects. I'm not technically back to being a regular again (probably never will be), I'm back to ask all you great devs to possibly check out a platform I'm working on. It's not 100% completed yet, but I'm at that weird 90% mark where you're almost done but you start to find other interesting things to do, so I'm forcing myself to ask people to hop on it to give me that push. It's going to have some interesting (if I say so myself) features.Definitely appreciate it! (Please don't kill me over the UI/UX, I'm primarily a backend dev...but it'll definitely improve by 100% Launch)
AND ONE LAST THING....I don't have a good name for it yet so..there's that..
THANKS!23 -
I just spent weeks working on a device driver on linux for a project I'm working on for uni, and for whatever reason, I only thought to cat the device I'm trying to read now. It turns out the output is already exactly what I want and I just wasted a monumental amount of time for nothing. I'm about to start screaming over how stupid I am2

This android app is almost done, little bits remaining but I'm so flipping bored of it that I just don't feel like working on it for another minute. I just want to do the other app. But I must complete this one before going to the next. Must.2

At the moment I'm working on a project where every line of code is actually garbage. However, the client insists on continuing to use ZF1.
Zend_Locale is a mess. I've been sitting on it for five hours and nothing's working.8 -
I'm currently working on a feature that no one likes. Everyone knows that it will be removed soon because the users won't understand it, but it still has to be implemented due to client-side Management madness.
Good thing: the contract with this client expires in 3 weeks :) -

I was coding some simple themes for a management system I'm currently working on my job, then I remembered about @Alice and I thought to myself "Fuck it, why not?" and added a subtle pink theme3 -
Well, this'll sound like my first rant but my boss did it again. working on implementing a new feature. but I got sick last week and took some time to recoup. well come into the office todat, tell him I'm going to finish it. he says okay. 3pm comes around and I go and ask him for some help on finishing it. he says "check out the repository, I already did it."
okay. I'm sick. you want it done. fine. that's cool. but you made me waste literally my entire workday doing something you knew was already completed? WTF?5 -
Working for a company with solid procedures really makes me appreciate how important they are. Knowing someone will be scanning through my pull request made me *really think* about appropriate layout and commenting. Before I could submit any old code and the other programmer wouldn't give a monkeys.
I guess that's a poor reflection on my performance but, I'm working on it -
First week on the job...excited to start working after just finishing uni..they gave me a monster C# project that hasn't been modified in years...and all the devs that worked on it are no longer employed and the code has absolutely no comments.
And I'm supposed to learn it and modify it...fuck me this is gonna take a while.4 -
As of late I'm creating private game servers on my local network in my free time for fun / relaxing
I've already running:
a World of Warcraft vanilla;
Travian version 3;
And I am currently working on a conquer online private server, but getting the right client for it is the hard part...4 -
I have a strict rule about putting my computer away by 7pm.
I've found that if I get started on something, no matter how stupid it is, I will stay up all night working on something. If I try to quit, I go to bed and can't sleep because I'm still thinking about it.
Setting a time gives my brain time to let go before it's time to go to bed.2 -

Hello fellow devRanters, this weekend I've been working on devRant CLI client I want to share with you: https://github.com/stepnivlk/rrant
I'm using it as a fortune when logging into terminal and since it stores rants locally it is fast.
I spent only couple of hours developing it so there is some space for improvement :).
Enjoy it and feel free to comment/do codereview.3 -
Just started today with Python 3. I don't know but I really start to like the language. Its not to difficult and it has nice syntax. Currently I'm working on a little financial overview generator. It parses the CSV file from my bank and sorts it into categories. Really fun to make. Do you guys made some nice projects in python?4

PM: This is broken.
Me: What? It works locally. That's weird...
PM: ...............
Me: (5 mins later) ok try again.
PM: still broken.
Me: Bangs head on desk. Why is this working locally?!?!!?
Me: (3 hours later) I'm missing a semi colon, and it wouldn't minify. Awesome.2 -
Story && rant && dev && linux
I was using linux mint for a while... more like 5 months for work, there's this Touchpad/mouse issue in it that was driving me crazy, so basically the mouse stops responding out of nowhere in the middle of my coding and I have to restart the fucking laptop to get it back. Yeah, I tried all the solutions I could find on the Internet and nothing works.
This issue likes to fucking mess with me so much, it seems to only happen when I absolutely mustn't restart the laptop or I'm working on a task and have a tight deadline and I don't have time to waste restarting my pc.
A couple of days ago, I had this major feature I needed to release to production and the time I estimated for it and shared with my team turned out to be insufficient, so I had to work extra hours from home to finish it ... while I was working, the mouse issue returned and I had to restart my pc like 20 times that day. It was fucking frustrating and It was already midnight and all you can hear are keyboard sounds and fucks flying.
I made a promise to myself that once i finish this task, I'm gonna fucking migrate to another distro, I'm fed up with linux mint's BS. I've been putting up with it for so long it's time to move on.
Yesterday I installed Manjaro and I'm happily working on it today xD.3 -
Being a junior and part of a small team at a startup, working with a new software architecture, even the team lead is a beginner in it. It feels like I'm at an echo chamber, there's nobody expert enough to look up to if stuck, decisions seem to be based on opinions rather than an architectural design kinda point of view.
Ugh, I hope I'm not the only here ever feeling this way.7 -
Why are these SAMPLES NOT WORKING!?
It's supposed to just be reading and writing OAuth2 tokens from session.
I'm THIS CLOSE |__| to getting things working and I had to leave work. The fucking worst.
On the bright side, I think I finally understand how OAuth2 works. I need to write an article that actually explains it properly because I've had to read dozens to get a good grasp on it.2 -
Is it weird that I'm excited to get to test my code for my side project that I'm working on? It feels like I should hate this since I'm going to graduate next year and my career will be doing this as a job. Really, though, I'm glad to make sure my code is designed properly. It gives me confidence in my programming skills. BTW, if anyone is trying to use a build tool in Python there are NO guides to get started that I've seen! I had to go through trial and error to get pybuilder running!2

So here's a rant I never thought I'd write.
I'm pretty happy with my current job. I'm working for a small non-tech business where I'm making a complete solution by myself. It's pretty chill just coding away all day and being my own project owner and manager.
The iffiest aspect is that my boss(es) don't know what (or if) I'm working on when I'm implementing a vital logging system, fixing bugs that cropped up due to implementing necessary, baseline security, and so on. They see a login page and figure the entire project is shippable, and when the login breaks because I'm configuring the wsgi for https the reaction is "it worked, why mess with it; just put it how it was". But I digress.
Today I got a job offer with a pay increase that made me exclaim "are you fucking serious" irl, in a business with a more professional environment consisting of senior devs, and with benefits I had never heard of.
I can't not accept, but that means just legacying the entire project I'm working on here. They'd basically be left with nothing after shelling out wages for me for these few months. Keep in mind this is a fairly small business who debated if they could afford this to begin with.
Disregarding whether they are willing/able to make it hard for me to leave, it stabs me in my scrubby dev soul to up and leave on a personal level.
They had a 3d printer at the other place though.15 -

I'm bored af working on crappy php56 legacy apps written by short sighted programmers, makes my life miserable, but the pay is pretty good for a remote job which is pretty rare in here. Meanwhile I'm interested on exploring fundamental stuff on computer science and experimenting new techs.
I'm thinking about doing a PhD but too afraid if I can't finish it or the future opportunity isn't good enough since I live in 3rd world country in southeast asia. Also it probably takes ±8 years to finish it including the preparation.
I have no question, but it would be great if you have some advice.1 -
I think COVID has made me a workaholic...
That or the project I'm working on is interesting ... Somewhat...
I own the whole thing, because no one else has enough experience with the existing projects that it builds upon.
Sorta feels like I've built my own kingdom but I have to manage it all too...1 -
Since I'm back to working for myself again and haven't been able to find a reliable hire, I'm alone. In this bubble, no one cares/sees/appreciates my backend code and I just realized that's why I've been slacking so bad on this ETL process. No one gives a shit about it but me. If I build an interface, I get kudos and everyone celebrates, but working on a three server process with layers of abstraction, auto-scaling, etc...and people just wonder if I'm jerking off all day.
Sometimes it sucks to be a lone ranger.1 -
Dang. I feel like I'm just not cut out to climb any ladder.
When we discovered a production bug. I feel bad about making people working on that part look bad by not catching it.
My manager has no issue with pointing out that I should have caught it. Beating a horse while it's down.
I mean no shit. Of course I know I should've caught it. How does making me feel worse about it help.
Feels like I'll always be in a tough spot no matter where I am on the ladder.
Or I'm just fragile. I acknowledge that, too9 -
Today I learnt that I'm much more productive if I get a constant loop of feedback on my tickets and stuff. Feels better that way.
Edit: I'm working with a new coworker from QA and she's more responsive than the others. I get my feedback fast and timely and this makes it way easier to work7 -

Hearing "do this , do this like this, that like that" every day removes passion from programming I had before. Now I'm starting to get deeper into javascript and to learn backend, and I'm working on a CMS with NodeJS and MySql backend, and vanilla JS on the client side. I like the architecture I had, and really like how I started working on it. Passion is back!4

Okay, it's getting a bit annoying to _hear_ my graphics hardware (NOT the fans. The circuits) working when I'm doing something on the screen.. Sometimes it feels like it's gonna snap and burst in flames or smth..13

So I'm working on this prototype of indie game with two friends. Since we are only 3, I can't just stick to coding only... Problem is, I'm the only one realising that and I've ended up doing all the jobs that are missing... Texturing, a bit of modeling, organizing the whole team, shaders, animating and so on... And the two others just stick to their thing and are confident in the fact that I'll be able to handle all the problems. It pisses me off.
But I need the project to have some base experience, and alone, I would probably melt down under the stress. But every time a problem show up I'm basically alone, and my level of stress skyrocket... Not sure if I have the shoulders to finish it, but I have to. In fact I'm not even to the point of ranting anymore I'm just depressed >.>... At least when I'm working on the code and not the rest, I'm really enjoying myself.
Not sure if I should do something about it ._.2 -
I love programming drunk! I can't sit still and always want to do stuff. When I'm drunk / tipsy I come up with ideas and start working on it. Most of the time in the morning, when my mind is clear, I'm not so creative and open minded as I'm drunk. Sometimes my ideas ain't that bad, but I loose interest in developing it any further. So I stop working on it.

Microsoft has put out some really fantastic and educational lectures for free on YouTube. And I understand they have to use Microsoft technology but it makes me cringe when they say things like "Now I'm going to open Microsoft Edge and use Bing." Started my summer internship at a company working on their codebase about two weeks ago. I expected a lot of differences from school, but not this much. I still have no clue what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting stuff done, and it's helping out, but I still have no idea what is going on.
Oh, also, we use outdated Javascript frameworks... I don't actually know Javascript yet but we're just gonna roll with it2 -
As some of you may have read, I'm working on an terminal based passwords manager, written in Go and i just published its first usable version.
Its my first ever open-source project, and I'm so damn happy to finally have something to show the world.
Its still lacks many features and has quite many bugs, but I'm looking forward to work on it in the next few weeks.

So this has probably been asked loads of times but I've never seen it. When working on solo projects for yourself do you still use source control like git or mercurial?
I usually don't because when I do personal projects its usually filthy and fast development to prototype quickly.
However, this current project I'm working on I am using git and I'm finding that slowing myself down just to follow good practice is actually improving my code quality and my understanding of my own project.14 -
So today i have to install the gigantic shit called cPanel on a vm that run on a macmini..
Our server are on cpanel, I'm installing it for tests purpose..
I already know that i'll swear more than i ever did before when i'll have to make pdo odbc working on easyapache4 for our db hosted on mssql server... RIP me1 -
My biggest sin is overshooting the problem - developing something "with the future in mind" which ends up way more complicated than it should be.
It works, works great, but nobody can maintain it because of the complexity, and because I usually write no comments in these situations.
But hey! At least I'm aware of it and working on fixing it in me.3 -
I'm working on a Web API for retrieving informarion of some sort (can't speak as it is a work in progress😝).
Before starting to work on this project all the experience I had was Desktop (C#, VB) and some SQL but now I'm learning so much more: REST, Asp.net core, nosql, GraphQL and more.
Even if I can't finish this project, still what I'm learning is even more valuable2 -
Lenovo T series laptops are amazing. I've purchased one in 2010, it was too good to be true and used for 5-6 years, forgot about it after I upgraded to Mac. Didn't touch for ~2.5 years, turned on today for my nephew. It is still working like charm, even the battery holds charge for 2hours, I'm impressed 👍12

After spending 3 days trying to install Ubuntu on an XPS 15, I am ready to give up.
It's just not possible to install Linux on it, it will either freeze on install, freeze on boot, freeze on shutdown, or freeze in the middle of all of these.
Using the dedicated GPU is impossible since Nvidia are fucking retards. The touchpad constantly stops working.
The internet is filled with distro respins and 500 page long manuals on how to get things working on an XPS 15, but nothing works properly. Even the fucking keyboard backlight doesn't turn on without writing 100 things in GRUB
For those saying Linux is "faster" and "more reliable", well fuck right off, my unlit keyboard says otherwise, I'm done.7 -
At the time, I'm working on a simple RAT, for leaning purpose, written I'm Go.
Now simple command-execution work's and I want to implement an encrypted connection between the client and the C&C-Server.
I know Go has some kind of TLS in its standard library, but is it really usable, or would it be easier to just implement my own simple encryption-module with some RSA and AES? -
My biggest personal challenge as a device? Staying on topic and meeting deadlines. I get too caught up adding bells and whistles because I want my work to be badass. So badass that I forget that I'm supposed to release it and not spend months working on adding features2

My dream project is to build my own analytics system and project on monitors which basically says everything live users on site, what every user is doing... where my site is failing etc...
Fortunately I'm solely working on it and implementing in the company I work. So, in couple of months it is going to be realistic.

I just finished this app I was working on, an app which I was supposed to be working on with a friend who never committed. It pisses me off that he didn't put in any input. We were supposed to work on different parts of the app. I had everything planned out, on how to make a certain function. But right now I'm just happy because I have no idea how I got it to work without the functions and at this stage I don't wanna check ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1

Our company doesn't have much structure. One of 4 people can have me working on a project, or all 4 at the same time. And every few hours 1 of them asks how their project is going and get huffy if I'm working on one of the other guys, claiming top priority. After 3 years, I've been able to just go with it. Half the projects have never actually made it to production. Sometimes, they'll even forget about their projects.4

In the project I'm working on with others, really complex and confusingly programmed, there's a method called "check[...]IsSet". It gives back a string. They went out of their way to write a Javadoc for it and what does it say?

No, really? I think I could have figured that out by myself! But what's in it, dammit? -

I'm about to graduate and I'm fucking exhausted ALL THE TIME. When I'm not in class, I'm at work. When I'm not at work or class, I'm working on projects. Trying to cover all my bases has left me incredibly anxious and unable to rest, so I don't sleep well and I'm fucking tired constantly, making it more difficult to do *anything*.
And if I hear "it's almost over" ONE MORE TIME :| yes, I know it is, that's why I'm freaking the fuck out, because I have 3 major projects I'm trying to balance on top of my internship.
I'm also trying to lose weight so I have to curve the stress eating. I cut out nicotine but I'm slowly picking it back up because
If I'm constantly stressed
And I can't rest
And I can't enjoy food
And I can't enjoy hobbies

It is doing that because that's how you asked it to be! And if it was so important, why are you only just looking at it now?3

Gonna give up on Advent of code.
I know I'm not really a programmer and while I had fun solving the challenges so far it feels I fail to translate the idea of solution into working code. i.e. I know how it should be working, but when diving into the code I'm losing focus and getting lost in the functionality.
It was also good reality check of my skill level when a task took me 50 min while TOP100 is below 10. Can't really fit the time it takes me to come up with a solution with other activities I should actually be doing.5 -

When it's ready, I'll run two versions. One that'll use to access my stuff outside my network, Plex style and one that hosts old movies that are now in the public domain. I'll use that one for demonstrative purposes4 -
What kind of projects are you guys currently working on? What technologies are you using? I'm personally thinking about starting to use the MEAN stack to get a working knowledge of it and how it works...8

This afternoon I had my first close encounter with a core dump, while working on my C++ simulation. It was brutal and I probably opted for the less efficient solution to avoid the problem, after hours of fighting. But hey. I'm alive and that is what matters most.

Attendance logging software which integrates a website, physical devices and Android/iOS app.
I'm working on it right now. -
Internships just kinda suck.
Like sure I'm probably not as good as the other Devs but knowing I'm getting over 5x less pay than anyone else in the room hurts.
Salaried and it works out at less than minimum wage if you convert it to hourly. Honestly what the fuck.
The experience im getting has been good but having to continue being on a student loan while working 38.5 hours a week is outrageous. Living in an already expensive city and I'm probably spending 10% of my pay on lunch in the office's canteen.10 -
Suggestion please!
I work basically on native android applications. From last week I started exploring cross platform and chose React native. I have zero knowledge on JS. And now it seems very hard to grab. I started a project and learning whatever I'm needing on that purpose. Some props I'm shooting blindly and components I don't even understand clearly how they are working.
Please suggest me a convenient way or guide me with some resources to alleviate my frustration! Pretty please!4 -
I hate fucking SteamVR stuff so much. I don't know why, but Valve has not set up the plugins in a way that makes any sense. I have so many workarounds in the project I'm working on it makes me sick.

So I'm having trouble keeping up with a game I'm working on and im struggling to find a new job, soooooo I decided fuck it and began concepting building a fantasy console with a custom backend language slightly modelled off of Assembly that you would then create a front end of...
Going to build it using GML and then build a GML front language because fuck it, why not! -
Should've posted this on Monday:
Feeling good about myself.
Customer wanted a project prototype done until the 14th of this month. I had it ready and working by the 3rd.
Yippie. I'm apparently competent enough.
I'm gonna ask if I am allowed to put a screenshot with censored names and whatnot on my portfolio.1 -
Today is bad pun day it seems.
I'm working on a script to automate exporting PST files and Office Interop is being a pain. I tell my colleague @jacoKotze about my current issue and he just says "Maybe you just need a new Outlook on things" -
Working on a library for a discord bot I'm gonna make.. the library is about 80% done and I can already build a working bot with it. But now all those new questions appear in my head about things I am going to make like "how do I design permissions" and similar stuff.... AM I OVERTHINKING THIS TOO MUCH?!4

I decided I'm going to repartition my laptop so that I'm able to dual boot Arch/Windows.
I really dislike Windows and got rid of it permanently because it kept deleting my (back at the time) Fedora partitions every couple of weeks.
Now I just really miss playing some of my old favorite games that I cant get working on Arch3 -
Boss opens ONE task and keeps adding more requests in the comments WHILE I'm working on it.
It's like we don't have rules anymore.2 -
Silence and an interesting project go a long way. If I'm really interested in a project that means I'll spend hours a day (even when I don't have them) working on it, and incidentally, procrastinating on other things.

Nicest part about working on my home server: being able to just blindly update.
Who cares if that breaks kibana or my plex server? I'm the only one using them.
It can be downright cathartic to just run sudo apt-get upgrade3 -
Why is it that when your making a perfect clients website he requests a really hard job 2 do, you do it, then they find something really cool on codepen.io and all your work is 4 nothing, I'm gonna start working for hours now.....

I was on a 3 hour flight back home, guy next to me ask what I'm working on, I say it's a personal project. Somehow we get on the topic of "I wanna make an app which shows inspirational quotes on the screen whenever someone turns on the screen".
Also, he wants to make it for the iPhone.
Shortly after, I told him the flight was giving me a headache and it would be better if I slept the rest of the flight.1 -
Depends on the definition "without break".
Does taking a walk count as a break if I'm thinking about work during it?
Does taking a shower?
Would it be considered continuously working if I'm sleeping for a few hours every few days, but otherwise work even while eating and pooping?
So I could say I range from ~48h hours on the strictest mode to multiple weeks on the permissive one. I wouldn't recommend any of these.1 -
Depends on what a tough dev day is. If it was just a tough day usually playing ice hockey helps. If it was a stressful day, board games with my daughter, provided it's not a Wednesday (her Mom's night). If it's a tough problem or bug I'm working on then alcohol, running or lifting, sex, general distractions will do the trick

So far, I'm not a fan of Ubuntu touch on the pinephone. I think ill plan on switching to PostmarketOS this weekend. It looks more bare bones from what I've seen (admittedly not very much so far) but looks like it's for more features working. UBports has a ways to go yet.4

Today is the first time I really wished we would use git, or some good version control. My coworker kept working on my project while I was on vacation and now something isn't working. I'm just not sure if it's not working because I was dumb enough to accidentally STRG+X (I know, I'm dumb) some of his lines or whatever, but the point is I have no way to trace back what it looked like before and now I gotta fill the blanks by deduction I guess10

My biggest ambition? I'm working on a programming language as a side project right now. I'd like to get it to a point where id rather use my language over something like Python for small scripts. And maybe even do a larger project using my language.
-
I was a bit intimidated going into my first full time job since I was the youngest on the team. They put me on a small project to start with and it wasn't difficult at all.
After working with my colleague for a while, he came in one morning and asked what I'm doing here.
"I'm at work? I work here?", I replied in confusion.
Then he went on about that I shouldn't be working at this company. He thought I was smart enough to work overseas at an investment bank.
Thanks for the complement :) -
I'm worried that this question will probably get downvoted on SO and I cannot post from my account as well, so here it is..
How to play youtube embedded video in mobile over a custom button / svg / image ?
One idea I'm currently working on is to trigger &autoplay=1 onclick but it is only appending that parameter to existing URL?
Please let me know if you have any thoughts, and I'm doing this for only mobile devices only
P.S I cannot use YouTube API11 -
Quick question, because I have no idea how to Google it. The "block coding" concept that scratch is built upon, does anyone know if it's copyrighted in any way?
Working on a project, where I'm thinking of implementing something like it.5 -
I give up! Been trying to solve this shit for a week and still failed:
Using Android Data Binding, two-way binding and when I compile I receive this error:
Unknown class: java.lang.String
It was working without issues before upgrading Android Studio.
Anyone has a clue how to solve this shit?
By the way I'm using Kotlin, on Java it doesn't produce errors, and I'm not going to convert my project to Java ...8 -
I'd like the ability to convince my teammates to gradually work on a project rather than working obsessively on it the day before it's due. I don't like waiting for the last minute to get things done, I like finishing things early so I'm not stressing myself out.
-
"Can you make this quick change?"
"Yeah, but I'll need to change every page this thing is on and you told me this other project I'm working on is high-priority. Are you sure you want me to do this?" (Also this is a change you're capable of making yourself...)
"It shouldn't take too long, we need this done."
...if I thought it wouldn't take long, I wouldn't have brought it up. -
First rant!!
I've got into an impasse.
I'm working as a mobile developer for one of the well known multinational corporations. I am working here for 1.5 years, it's my first job and I'm already a team leader. It doesn't mean that this is my programming experience. The problem is that I'm feeling that this job stops me from growing on personal plan. I have no more time to work on my personal projects, i have no real portfolio, projects made for the company cannot be included in my portfolio and so on. And also the payment isn't real good so i can't quit and allocate my full time to my own projects. And without a good portfolio i can't get my own customers.
What do you guys would do in my situation.3 -
I'm working on a very-customized web player at work.
I filled my code with a plenty of comments, many to justify those functions / fixes.
For those comments, Safari is depicted as worse than Edge.
Is it even possible?
The next dev, which will take my code in his hands, must know how much we suffered to build it.4 -
Working on installing manjaro with i3 on an old Thinkpad T61 I got for 50 dollars. It's taking forever cause the internet speeds suck here and I've never installed anything but Ubuntu and mint so I'm hoping it goes well.
Anyone have any tips got this device?
Also slightly drunk, so that's a thing I guess.3 -
I always print out a hard copy of whatever code I'm working on, then go through the code and annotate it with a pen until I feel that I have some insight... it's usually either that or I'll just walk away and come back later2

How do you deal with clients continuously rewriting the content for a static website and every time you deploy they rewrite it again?
Some pages of this site I'm currently working on are on their 6th version just for written content changes!
I wanna drive over there and punch them every time they do.5 -
My best CS Teaching experience is when I'm working with someone in C++, and I get to see the look on their faces when it finally starts to make sense.

Sometimes I'm to lazy to properly abstract and reuse code, so I'll just copy & paste and then alter it - and then later curse myself about that. I'm working on this though...

So honestly this is kinda like an update on what I am currently doing rather than anything else, but I think it's pretty cool. So I'm in 9th grade right now and we're learning Trigonometry. I grasped the concept on the first day and I began to make a program that would solve a Trig. problem. So far, if you don't know about Java, I have done the 'front-end' part of the program, just flashy text, descriptions, and a bit more. I'm still going to be working on it today, but I just wanted to share because I think I may be working on it for the next few days. I really like this challenge to my self, as it is helping me use the code I have learned to do something for "the real world." Anyways, here it is:

Is there a good place to post code and have people comment on the style or the logic? I'd love to start getting feedback on my code and break bad habits before they become too ingrained. Plus, our first project is a blackjack game, I'm working through it pretty well but I'm a little stuck and I think it's completely because I'm paranoid I'm not doing it well/right (even though I probably am).2

i'm not sure if it had anything to do with this app i'm working on but I broke down and cried when I saw that I forgot to take my laundry out.3

QA people hurt my head. "I found this issue" cool write it up. Proceeds to not write it up. "Hey this isn't working" yeah your on the wrong PR. For the 80th time. "Hey I just found out 4 days after deploying this key feature is no longer working" did . . . did you test it? I'm irritated. Probably because all of my tickets got sent to triage because I pushed them to the wrong PR. My life hurts. The burn out is real.

Client's WordPress powered site has gone down due to influx of traffic. Site is cached and whatnot, the server it's on is simply underpowered and not coping. Whilst I'm frantically trying to spin up new servers and load balance and get things back online, client keeps interrupting with emails like "URGENT - Website is down", "How long is this going to take please?", and "Hello! Do you know whats going on?!". I reply cordially to each, secretly growing increasingly enraged. "Yes I am already aware and working on it.", "Difficult to estimate, but I'm hoping no more than 20 minutes.", "Yes. I'm working on it.", "Yes, I know. I'm working on it."
And then I receive this gem: "Perhaps call Word press?"

A Python-Brainfuck compiler written in Python. In future it will be a separate language, but for now I use directly Python even for the language.
All written in Python, without external library.
His name is MurPy, at the moment it has variables, if, comparisons, else.
Now I'm working on a multiple subroutine support2 -
This one is on me I'm not gonna lie. So makin a simple web timer right. Yknow just polishing JavaScript and I was working on the actual looks of the timer. I made some buttons with CSS and when I spam them it highlights all text on the timer and its posting me off and the "fixes" I've seen and tried havent been working or I havent been doing it right. I just needed to get that out of the way. It's a small not even a huge problem just something that bothers the hell out of me.2

So I'm dealing with an Apache Tomahawk schedule component that's started acting up.
It turns out that when you click on a time slot, instead of just posting up the time slot, it posts back to the server the component you clicked on (the whole calendar), and the y position of the click.
Now, imagine the user has zoomed in... yeah, shit stops working. -
I'm working real hard for my studies and I'm loving it because I'm getting the results. However, friends keep on telling me how I'll regret that later and that this is my only youth etc...

My most cutting edge story would be working on Huawei fusionsphere cloud for some big firm.
They needed some scripts to setup servers for their newly built data center which will handle the live feed from traffic cameras from all over the country.
It was during college but I think it still holds the top place except for the new one that I'm working on right now. -
When it comes to working on side projects, how do you usually pace yourself? I always find it hard to do side projects. Do you just spend like an hour every afternoon? I feel I rarely do side work mostly because I'm afraid I'm going to sink like 5 hours in 1 setting. To people who do significant side work, how do you balance that with your day job?2

Ok, so here is the thing:
After a very long WINDOWS UPDATE
the sound has gone. No speakers or headphones working. After wasting >10 hours (not in a row)
trying to find the FINAL SOLUTION, I have just gave up. Bought a working external sound card, but I could only use headphones plugged into it.
In a week, I booted Linux (cos I have never really
used it and not with the sound problem in mind) and guess what - on Linux sound works normally! On THE SAME LAPTOP!!!
I belive the update somehow harmed the audio drivers. I'm really fed up with it.9 -
Can someone help me? I'm getting this error in VS Code while working on my Unity project. Everything was working fine for last few months. Now I'm getting false positives, because everything works fine in Unity. The problem's gone when I open "ObjectInfo" class file and save it, but I have to do it every time I start VS Code.
The type or namespace name 'ObjectInfo' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) [Assembly-CSharp] -
I'm at my limits with working from home. It started off really cool, but for a multitude of reasons I just need to get out of my house. So, hello. :)
I'm on my second semester of my IT degree. I'm in "Analysis and development of systems". I aways loved the world of technology, and more especific development.
The thing is, right now I work on a bank, but I'm starting to hate that thing. Stress 24h a day, and I'm doing something I don't like.
I've married a few months ago, so now I have a family to maintain, the main reason I'm waiting to get a degree before starting on my IT career (maybe it could help on getting a new job or even freelancing).
Now, I need a little help. A lot of you looks like to be working on this for some good years. What are your advices? Do I need a degree to start on my career? If quitted my job right now, even without experience on the programming world (professionally), would it be worth it?
I have little experience with freelancing, I don't think its enough to work full time on freelancing development. Should I try it? What you guys think? Or should I just drop out on work and star investing on my career? -
I'm working with an xml schema that effectively emulates xml... inside xml...
It looks like this
<child>
<tag>ABC</tag>
<value>DEF</value>
</child>
I don't event want to get started on how it handles child elements.
This is some next level abstraction hell.
And it's not like it can't use normal XML tags. In other parts of the project it uses a slightly more sane schema.5 -

Since I'm a front-end developer I've been working on PHP quite a lot lately, not only for front-end but also for back-end stuff, data conversion and image manipulation.
I've found that it's quite pleasant to work with thanks to the tons of documentation around and how straightforward it is.
I don't get how much hate it gets but I assume it's because I'm only starting to work with but damn, you could even build a car with it!1 -
Hey everyone :-) - Hope you're all doing well & Staying safe, i just have a question for you all, i have a project i am working on which is a command line tool to track my storage on my PC & laptop, right now it outputs my remaining space, used space and storage capacity :-), it also shows these numbers on bar chart & pie chart - i'm proud of it! :D , its written in Python also - would love to know what other things would you guys add to it? any ideas? id really appreciate it :-) cheers! <336

So i'm working on this course assignment program and i'm trying to remove object from a 2d array and I couldn't figure it out how to do it without messing the array indexes. Wen I was using aarrayList I could just do arrayName.remove(number), but not with the regular array. Than I had an enlightment moment.
Why not just move the object off the screen?1 -
Actually I'm writing a Facebook Messenger Bot. Characters limit for each sending message is 320, so I made simple function to split messages on parts. I set the limit to 315, 5 characters less than Facebook.
Spend 3 days on finding solutio why messenger is sending only last part of message.
Today I made a change, set my character limit to 316 and what? It's working! Set it to 320? Working!
Messenger has problem only when it's 315!
Piece of shit...4 -
I'm a bit frustrated. I'm 23 and I finished a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering last 2015. Working on a career path in cyber security. Is it normal to just understand and test the concepts and not fully memorize everything? It really bothers me that I feel I don't know anything despite developing small tools, testing other people's work, reading about related topics and playing with Kali.5

I finally got a nice Ubuntu setup working and running. No wrappers or drivers for my existing wifi dongle but a new one on the way. And Cities Skylines has Linux support so I'm happy. I love it Cheers guys xo1

Windows plug & play is shit. Change my mind.
Wasted so much time trying to connect my camera and I still cannot plug it in (not sure if the PCI driver is missing, or just Windows sucks at this). I thought fresh Windows installations handle the drivers automatically, at least last time I looked it worked out of the box.
On the other hand, I've rarely had any issues with Linux in these regards. I'm probably biased, but I'm still more productive when working on Linux.10 -
Sooooo how much should I expect to get accomplished as a new junior developer? I feel like I'm making progress but basically everything is a struggle and I do it wrong to learn. Is this normal? I understand a lot but also the complexity of the projects im working on (in comparison to my skill level) means I'm basically always wrong and in need of guidance.

Today I wanted a new launcher on my phone (Lg G4 - old one), had the stock until now and I got bored of it.
I've installed Lawnchair launcher!
After 3 hours I'm still customizing it... ffs I have a ton of tasks and I'm "working" on my phone.
PS: I recommend it if you want a pixel launcher-like. -
I'm so happy today. Fixed a bug that was haunting me for weeks. My ionic app was working on Android, the browser, the toaster,... Everything but an iPhone. I thought it was an issue with iOS and this bug really messed with me.1

Looking for advice...
I'm working on a personal assistant type application, my own Jarvis.
I've been using Python3 and it's at a point I'm confident to host it on server, but it consists of no commands.
Just a server, communication and other functions.
What process would you use for commands?
As in, would you just have loads of if statements? If so, what about plugins?
I'm using Yapsy as a plugin framework, so I'd like to be able to drop plugin files and build up the command list.
This is why I haven't done commands yet...2 -
Working on creating a Discord chat bot... Trying to fix & improve bot command to work better... Testing it... That's all what i'm working on bot.
Btw, i'm developing a bot with Discord.py library.1 -
Recently I switched to Linux, and so far I'm loving it.
I am on Pop_OS! and it's working great for me so far. The package manager and actually good appstore is definitely a pro over Windows, and I really like the customizability.8 -
I'm pretty sure whoever devised the syntax for Kamailio config files was drunk around half the time they were working on it, because only half of it makes sense.

last week I finished a course on k8s "simply, for developers". Today I decided to fiddle with kubectl to move a project I'm working on to k8s and it was a complete success (thing runs on minikube and pulls containers from a private Gitlab registry).
I'm happy with the results, there is still room for learning k8s and devops in general. -
I've adopted this per task desktop management think. Anyone else do this?
I make a new desktop, for a given task, support ticket, or whatever. And when I'm 'done'. I keep everything (ticket, whatever I was working on in vs code, related emails) open but minimize it all except the pull request waiting to happen.
If I get some feedback on the PR / changes I just fly through my virtual desktops and there it is and I'm ready to work.
Then after the PR goes through ... I keep it open for a bit anyway to be sure nothing bad happens.
Then after a while I shut it all down assuming that it is working well.
All this so I don't have to fire everything up again for a rando request or dork up or whatever.2 -
In about 1.5 hours i'm getting out of the side project/startup i've been working on with a few friends. Not an easy decision but had do it, as it had a negative impact on my real job.3

I'm working on my own smarthome project (how rare nowdays...:) ). I'm using microsoft's git repo. I'm not make my project open source, not because I'm a douchebag, but because I'm a very bad coder. My biggest fear is not the fact, that it would be commented as wtf is this code, but receiving pull requests from pros and I wouldn't even understand their code.
This is my "training" project (python, flask, apscheduler, sqlalchemy, bootstrap2, mqtt, micropython)
I'm thinking to make it public without accepting external pulls, just for me to learn more.
I'm just wondering your thoughts on this.
Thoughts?1 -
Haven't gotten it yet, still in college working towards it, but from the way a good number of people are making it sound, it's not that worth it. Probably going to drop out when my scholarship dries out at the end of spring 2020. It's a four-year scholarship, but I'm probably not going to graduate in spring 2020 based on the grades I'm getting in my math and physics classes.
Side note: I'm taking Computer Organization and Architecture this semester and it's making me want to jump off a fucking bridge.4 -

Started messing around a bit with @LucaScorpion JavaRant API thinking I might make a command line app. Well I have about 50 lines of code later and it's working to get a random rant and all the comments. For my bachelor thesis I'm working with Snort (an Intrusion Detection System). Running it on some test pcaps I get X alerts. Goddamn I hate TFVS. I'm working on PHP application where the code is stored on TFS. So far, I've been getting by using the VSTS plug in Microsoft supplies on PHPStorm. The plugin is buggy as hell, and I'm about fucking done with it. Apparently, PHPStorm doesn't save files when your committing. Unbeknownst to me, however, the most recent attempt failed, crashing the plugin. Of course, and the commit task is still running under the hood, so none of my work has been saved1

Does anyone happen to know of some good resources for securing a flask app? I'm writing my first flask app on a development host and just like crabs to pubes, I've got bots attacking it already.
I'm working on fail2ban now and I'm reading up on options listed here: https://pythonhosted.org/Flask-Secu...
thank you in advance for your help or expertise with Flask/Security!! -
I need some advice, you guys.
I'm weeks away from graduating from my code school and working on a capstone project with a group and there are several people who I'm having a hard time following their code.
No comments, no documentation, just "30 hour sessions" and opinionated, undocumented code that doesn't mesh with the project plan 100%. It works, it get's the job done, but it's over complicated, undocumented and hard to follow.
Starting to feel like the 3rd wheel in a 4 person group because I'm the only one that is having a problem and I'm not sure how to get them to document their code for me. They try to explain it and just end up literally reading their code, which doesn't really help.
I feel like I'm working in a group of individuals who don't really want to work together and I'm worried it's going to be a problem.1 -
I created two projects and they are now under testing. Now i am working on two other projects (& more to come). I'd be working on something but i get a lot of emails to do some changes or fix some bugs.
I feel i'm slow but it's only me working on those 4 projects, i can't stop something and work on something else!!
Should i work more at home? Or is it not my fault?
Nobody complained on my work, i'm giving good results although i feel i am losing control, but what if they think i'm a person who can't manage well? any advice???5 -
Worst part of being a dev?
I'm sure it is working on a problem for a long time that you forget what the problem was in the first place... -
Learning modern metaprogramming C++. Because I'm not even sure if there is others people working on it in my country x)2

So I'm working on a project with my professor, I ran into problem and don't know how to solve it.. everytime a spreadsheet is saved it should ask for two step verfication. Doing so while testing in matlab was easy. Now I can't implement it on system level..Since we're using Linux i thought i would be good idea to change the kernal files which handle copying and pasting or replacing... Any idea (I'm not a hardcore linux user) any input will be much appreciated2

So I'm free again. Started a new job in November and then last week they said it wasn't working out. They like me but need someone "more senior". Good luck finding someone more senior who is willing to work on jps and glassfish 2 in 20204

Working from home is fucking bad. I'm finding myself skiving big time. Finding it difficult to focus, letting people down because when I should be working - my feet are up on the table and I'm on YouTube with no pants on. Also - the code I have been contributing to the repository is utter shite.
Wtf.7 -
Please tell me I'm not the only one hating Laravel. Been working on that thing for well over a year, my hatred for this thing grew so strong and vibrant I feel like I can see it right now in front of my face.
I need to know I'm not alone.6 -
Originally I'm coming from Java , about 2 years ago, I switched Node with TypeScript and had a hard time getting accustomed to Promises. It was a big relief when I learned about async/await. Much cleaner code, no brainfuck anymore when thinking about how to handle stuff that requires multiple async values and so on.
Now I'm working on a clients project as a Java dev again. SOA, Spring Framework, Kafka and MongoDB, nothing too complicated... if they wouldn't use reactor to bring reactive functionalities to Java.
It feels like I'm back in Promise Hell...2 -
I'm building a web application, and I'm currently working on the account registration code, and I could use some design advice. In your opinion, is it better to say "username/email address in use" when one or both are in use, or would it be best to specify whether the username or email address are in use? Why?1

Hey guys.
Yesterday I saw something about real-time Implementations using deepstream.io and been asking myself if I should try to add it to the project I'm working on (Angular).
It's important to say I'm working for free, because it's a school project, which in the end is going to be used by real people and solve real problems inside my school.
BUT it's not a required feature. It's more like a matter of vanity.
It's just id don't know if it's worth the time and effort. Or if it will work at all2 -
I worked on a game about or politicians sending home tourists, is a brawler. I'm still working on it tho.

gulp.pipe(notify("SASS compiled, motherfucker!"));
I hate working on tight deadlines when I have plans the entire week, so I add some random shit to my gulpfile once in a while to cheer myself up.. Did not work, but I'm not gonna remove it.1 -
Have you tried anything (legal) to consume/smell that helps you get in the zone?
I want to try smelling salt lol. Feels like it could give me a rush to crush whatever I'm working on17 -
For a project I'm working on:
Does your work allow you to sign in to your personal accounts for i.e. Gmail or Facebook on your work device?
Do you think this should be allowed?
Do you do it yourself?
I imagine it's a gray area. I'm even thinking it could be a security risk? But maybe healthier too to keep business and private life separate? Thoughts?4 -
Is ther anyone here who tried creating thier own PHP framework? And why you stop or continue working on it? I just want to know if what I'm doing now with my free time is worth it, well except for the fact that I learn to discover better approach on some problems that I encountered before. :)5

Struggling with curl on php today. No matter what I try it won't send a csv to the API i'm working with. :(7

They have a global idea of what kind of sector I'm working in, but they have absolutely no idea what i do/make/create/produce (and I've given up on trying to explain it)

I'm on my internship right now, working on Library Management System and thinking about how data will load fast in server-side, it took almost a minute even I used DataTables. It is JUST a 22K+ of library records. Is my only knowledge is just PHP, MYSQL, JS... caused this problem? Would MVC help, i'm only have 200 hours to finish the project but no knowledge yet in MVC15

So I'm working on this little personal project (also as a way to keep my "skills" sharpened for the coming semester), that first started as a workaround to do this other thing, and I wanted to develop it and make it a full fledged thing, with a GUI (or something that resembles it, I don't know how to make GUIs yet, and IDK why is it a 3rd grade thing) and all instead of existing just in the IDE's terminal. When it was on the workaround stage it was just this ugly monster, with only 2 things one could do, but it worked. Now I'm going for a more polished thing and it's starting to break on me, and in places I didn't expect it to LoL
It's like I'm on a boat and I'm getting leaks from everywhere. Arr gotta get me a bucket and save me boat from sinking -
waste a few hours trying to debug shit im working on a feature branch, only to check main branch and it turns out somebody else broke main but the dev environment i'm piggy backing on using is cutting edge
i now miss having a separate individual dev environment to use, but i suppose id lose on some perks probably -
Anyone have tips or extra features on asp.net mvc that i need to know in order to survive? I'm just starting to learn it as I have to maintain a neglected system and they only had one programmer working on it. And that only programmer is deceased.
My current emotion is like;
I'm a potato,
Not only physically,
But also mentally..2 -
God damn the android camera 2 API is a giant pain in the ass. First I got it all working on my emulator, then I thought "hey let's set how it looks on my fancy phone!.... Oh... Ok."..
So at much fiddling I managed to merge the Google sample with my requirements and got it working on my phone. Then I'm sitting in the train, fire up the emulator and to my surprise IT STOPPED WORKING ON THE EMULATOR AAARRHH!
anyway, it's working on my device which will suffice for now.
Now I'm trying to chop the video into images and... Wait... Google... What do you mean your don't support the Java media framework?!?
😭😭😢😭😩😩😖😡😡😠😠😠😠 -
How often does crowdfunding a prototype work out right?
Like I've been working on this prototype for 2 months and it is so damn expensive, especially with a horrible college job. I want to crowd-source the funding but I'm not sure about it.1 -
swear to god i'm going to say it after listening to some silly stupid z bitch go on and on about her bizniz when she's short and white and tiny and an idiot working for someone else...

Unity is the worst! Every single version of it has some kind of bug that prevents some piece of what I'm working on to be buggy. 5.3.4 seems the most stable, as far as the app working, but likes to crash on me several times a day on Mac OS. I'm really tired of this.

I really should be working on my assignment, since it's a really basic 'build a website' thing, but... I'm so burned out on this course already, augh...
Plus there's the WHS assignment distracting me from the actual IT work. At least the 'talking to clients' assessment is relevant, even if it's annoying.1 -
RubyGems had to have SSL configuration errors for right when I'm working on a demo rails project for a firm 🙃🙃🙃 Got it working, but still

How does FS-based locking,
Eg. What sqlite does, work on the inside?
I'm working on a file-format for storing binary data and I want it to be safe for concurrent use.2 -
The pomodoro technique and some nice music usually helps me get through dev days. Since I'm pacing myself working on small tasks at a time it doesn't feel like I've spent the entire day coding

The project I'm currently working on: developing a new rootless container deployment to host some legacy Python applications (zope/plone). The initial plan was to just host those on VMs with all the legacy software, I at least convinced everybody to develop a new container deployment for it, which could be re-used for other things. However, it's a lot more work, and working with Puppet goes at a meandering pace.

Need some media query help on a website I'm developing.
I'm keeping my browser cache clear, checking different browsers, trying different editors for uploading changes but nothing seems to be working.
Firebug is still showing the code as if the files aren't being overwritten with my changes.
If someone wouldn't mind taking a look I'd really appreciate it17 -
I'm working on a project to create a filter for an essay examples database on https://essaypay.com/essay-examples..., and I could use some advice on the best way to approach it. The filter needs to allow users to select the length of the essay and the level of writing separately, but also be able to use both filters at once. I'm using Python and have some knowledge of C/C++. What would be the best way to implement this filter efficiently and effectively?3

Excuse my question I might be the one to blame, but on Typescript 3.7 JSON.stringify parses numbers as strings, while on 3.4 it was working without issues.
I'm no pro in web dev but I did use JSON.stringify lots of times and that's something strange here, not sure what the cause is, but when I parse number props again using parseInt(value.toString()) it works .-.2 -
I've been so focused on making the E-shop I'm working on as customisable as possible that I've accidentally created a way to destroy it. It's not a bug, it's a surprise feature

So anyone looking to make a 2d rpg? I'm really driven but it can be cumbersome as the only one working on it without people to collaborate with3
