I'm the git master in my group for a uni project as I am the only one with some experience.
This is what I have to deal with20 -
My worst developer sin is probably me talking sh*t about programs I could never have done better myself.
"Omg, this is so inefficent!"
"Omg, the ui is so confusing!"
"What kind of idiot would do that?"
...I'm not the only one who does that, am I?10 -
I'm stuck between 2 options:
1) Rant about my problems
2) Share DevRant with colleagues
Am I the only one with this problem? 😂16 -
The only thing I hate about being the on call/standby server engineer is that I've got to stay up until midnight.
Right now I'm tired as fuck, just want to go to bed but I'm doing server stuffs because I've got to stay up for more than two more hours 😩
I don't even mind setting an alarm for 3AM to check if there've been any disruptions because I'll fall back asleep like it's nothing but the forcing to stay awake...
Just one more night!12 -
"Did you get my email?"
No, your email got sucked into the black hole that is the vast and mysterious internet. It's gone forever.
/s
Yes, I got your email. I'm ignoring it because I can only handle one stupid coworker's request at a time. Take a number.6 -
I'll get to my four words in a sec, but let me set the background first.
This morning, at breakfast, I fired up my trusty laptop only to get a fan failure warning.
Finally, after the three year old is asleep tonight, I'm able to start dismantling the case to get to the fan. I'm hoping it just needs cleaned out.
Hard drive, memory, and keyboard spread out over the kitchen table. I'm not even halfway done.
Guess what? Now I'm one of the lucky 3500 people to have a power outage at 9 pm. Estimated restore time: 2 am.
Sigh.
"All those tiny screws"
And a three year old in the house...18 -
When I'm at work, can't wait to go home and work on my personal projects.
When I'm home I cook, I eat then I'm too tired to do anything except watching Netflix on the couch.
Then I go to bed frustrated for not having actually done anything I really like.
Am I the only one?
Is there any escape from this?17 -
In a career talk about the importance of the IT industry:
Speaker: "Who here uses AWS?"
*I'm the only one who raised my hand in a hall of ~100 IT students*
Speaker: "Good, you are a geek that everyone should aim to be!"
Ummmm… Is that a compliment…? Why do I feel a bit offended…10 -
Boss: Every one of my employees is underperforming. What should I do?
Catbert: You should fire yourself because you're the only common variable.
Boss: I hadn't considered that.
Catbert: That's how I know I'm right.

OMFG it happened again. I'm always very explicit with recruiters that I don't take full time employment while I'm studying. This one was very understanding about it and said he found a great match for my skillset.
I just had a meeting with the CEO of this great match of a company.
- "No, we only seek people who can work full time, let's keep in touch when you've graduated".
What the fuck, way to waste everyones time.10 -
Working on a funny/new api/service (will be a public one) and I'm only now realizing how important good security is but especially:
The amount of time that goes into securing an api/application is too goddamn high, I'm spending about 90 percent of my time on writing security checks 😅
Very much fun but the damn.31 -
Sometimes I scroll or tap something on my phone with my nose
(Usually when I somehow can't use any of my hands to do that or I'm just too lazy)
Is that weird? Am I the only one?11 -
You know what? I'm starting to think Stack Overflow has an elitist attitude problem. I post an earnest question in meta and 3 out of 4 guys ridicule the idea and are rude. Only one person seemed willing to even consider my question. The other 3 just posted rebuttals of my idea. This is a Q&A forum, not the U.S. presidential debates, damnit!13
-
I'm really proud of the devRant community, it seems to be the only one not completely overrun and ruined by people fighting about the election. Stay awesome everyone!7
-
Not entirely dev related.
Just wondering if I'm the only one on here who actually EATS coffee beans regularly?

What's with all the people having so much issues with Windows? I often see posts about freezes, crashing and updates. I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one who never has any issues.20
-
Ok, do you sometimes feel like you get treated as search engine? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.
My coworker from my previous workplace is messaging me to suggest about good tutorial about a framework that I'm not familiar about.
"Dude, have you heard about Google?"5 -
I absolutely hate the way we are taught programming in Indian colleges.
FML #1: I'm pursuing a UG CS course, and this semester, I only had one subject of Computers, that too only 1 credit. The rest with all electronics.
FML #2: In that 1 credit course, we had to make a C++ project which had "data handling". No one cares if you build something cool or not, just that a project should have "extensive use" of data handling.
FML #3: Source code had to be >= 1000 lines. This is the only place where ADDING MORE LINES OF CODES THAN REDUCING IT is appreciated. Had to stuff my code with all kinds of comments and violating the basic principle of DRY.
So, yeah, we're fucked big time. 😥14 -
Dear Apple
I'm using AppLoader, a tiny app with only one thing to do: Upload IPA (app) file to your servers, please explain WHY THE FUCK IT TOOK 4.5GB RAM TO DO A SIMPLE TASK!
Dafuq is wrong with these guys -.-6 -
Friend: hey can you make me a website?
Me: sure, what is it for?
Friend: 'whatever the site is for'
Me: Ok, what are the different tabs you want for the navigation bar?
Friend: Ummm... Idk yet
Me: Ok... So do you have an idea what you want the website to look like?
Friend: Ummm just make it look pretty
Me:undefined guess will try something i'm a programmer not a designer areyoureallyreadyforwebsite whyevenask am i the only one here2 -

As a kid I tried to compress one zip file 4-5 times...self praising myself that I just found the world's best idea to save hard-disk space!!! Only to realise that sometimes, I'm stupid.2 -
Are there any other developers out there who find that people judge their skills based on the color scheme they use in an editor?
I started programming with software that only offered one color scheme and have never felt the need to move away from it since I'm used to it.
While I'm sitting in the office, co-workers often come up to me, take one look at the fact I'm using a light color scheme and feel the need to try and convert me to the dark side as if that will make me a better developer.
Does anybody else experience this?26 -
I'm home sick for 4 days now and I'm starting to become paranoid about being replaced because I caught one front end dev watching Spring Boot videos on Friday.
I'm the only one who works with it there.
Not feeling well.22 -
Why are all my classmates building their web applications in PHP for our thesis? I know it's used a lot but for smaller projects there's tons of better ways to build a web application. Besides myself and another guy in this class (I'm using Java and mongoDB, he's working in ASP.NET and Microsoft SQL), nobody else wants to use something different. We only did PHP in one class so this seriously can't be the only language 2/3rd's the class knows.
Oh God it probably is.8 -
My boss just asked me for a cheat sheet I have that lists all our app server's paths.
The paths are attached as annotations throughout some Java files.
Anyway I send him the one I have but he asks if he could have an updated one.
Now imagine if I were like most monkeys and had made this cheat sheet by hand....
2 mins easy vs an(other) hour of grunt work
Why is it that I'm the only person on the team that writes utilities to automate boring grunt work while everyone else just does it manually whenever it needed....
Isn't DRY a core principle of being a developer?
I'm the only person that builds utility apps that automate frequent tasks that people keep asking us to do....21 -
Fidget spinners are stupid.
But what do you have on your desk instead?
The challenge of a Rubik's Cube? A classic Newtons Cradle? A stack of empty pizza boxes? Magnets, because how do they work? The one and only devRant stress ball?
I'm looking for something to mess with when I'm staring in disbelief at horrible PRs.
Preferably something semi-creative, tactile and stress-relieving. The three-dimensional material equivalent of the doodle.
Something which is less annoying for coworkers than the clicky switches in my keyboard. And a bit more appropriate than my genitals.34 -
I think I'm not the only one.
Code Applications every day in different languages, but too stupid to use Excel.4 -
I hate access. I wish I could use literally any other program. But they're not authorized.
I'm the only one working on this, and everything is closed. How the fuck is the object in use somewhere else? And where the fuck did my primary key go???7 -
Company email sent around last night that 'for security' we need to use the latest software, fine. But we are also told only to develop in Edge as it's the newest and most secure browser, therefore is the only one we can use. There no way I'm using Edge to develop.
Fuck you, Mr Consultant, you've taken the company for a ride.

I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3

I'm the only one here that still uses jquery instead of some angular/react/vanilla/random JS frameworks?11

Productivity struggles... Am I the only one who is super productive between 7am - 12:30pm. And after those hours I'm near useless 😞. Brain is to tired to solve problems effectively.
How do you guys combat the afternoon slump/drain?21 -
Hey, I had a question. How social are you all IRL?
I'll explain myself. IRL, I don't talk to anyone unless they talk to me (which I don't seek) for example. And regarding friends, I've never had more than one "buddy" each school year, unconsciously dropping them once we weren't linked by school anymore. There is only two people I have kept throughout the years and that I'd call friends, one of them is my girlfriend.
That being said, I know I'm especially asocial, but I'm curious how everyone is here :)
We often hear "Computer people don't have many friends blabla" but I'm curious about that ^^29 -
Am I the only one who loved coding - I could spend hours and hours on my personal projects; but after I finally got a job, I'm just too exhausted from coding at work to do any coding at home? How did you overcome it?7
-
I happen to be the only girl in my small dev team of 4 males plus me.
I'm freaking tired of hearing 'hey guys','how are you doing guys', 'what's the update guys' in every meeting/call when one of them is addressing the rest of us.
Yeah i know I/they can't do anything about it. I somehow grew numb to hearing it, but sometimes hearing it one thousand time in a single call is driving me crazy.
I once mentioned it to an a senior dev who happens to be the one using the g word the most during meeting.
Me: could you please stop saying guys all the time, I'm not a guy.
Him: what do you want me to say, 'hey guys and a girl?!'
Me: ... -_- (internally: seriously!!)
Uugh.23 -
I (and many devs might too) need some advice.
Well, I'm happy and sad at the same time :) :(
I'm so happy because finally I can put a floor pet on my avatar. I put my yellow favorite cat (its name is "Güero/Blondie"). On the other hand, I'm so sad because last week, my stupid and drug addict neighbor poisoned my cat :'( (not the yellow one, it was a gray cat. I'm 90% sure that he did it, he tried to do it last year). I know that it was only a cat, but I felt terribly all the past week, I couldn't even think or code. Fortunately it was the ending of the sprint and my code was successfully tested, so I didn't have to code, only trying not to cry at the office.
What would you do in this situation? I mean, those days when you feel like sh*t but you need to go to work and finish the code.24 -
I passed my exam (did well even), signed up to be a blood donor and landed a job interview all in one day. If all days could be like that.. Now to go look my coworkers in the eyes like I'm not getting ready to jump ship but I'm secretly so excited I can barely sit still 🤭😂
(yes I know a job interview doesn't equal I got the job already, thanks and calm the fuck down, dads 🙄 only an idiot would only have one other thing lined up. Plan C, D and E are on standby too)5 -
I guess I'm not the only one who sometimes code in my dreams while sleeping. Maybe it's because working as a programmer is like a dream come true.4

So processors have Moores Law, I'm starting to think Web Development has one too.
"There shalt always be a new, better, framework, that would have saved weeks of time, but only after you've hit the point of no return in a project"
Anyone else know the feeling of "damn...I may as well just rewrite everything...."3 -
I became github addicted...
I started to use it for any single little project I ever created, for documents, files not code related (of course private repositories), etc. instead of using a cloud storage service.
Please tell me I'm not the only one.5 -
Real story, I'm not kidding you.
But I wouldn't believe it, if it hadn't happened right now.
Customer calls, one device gets no mobile data connection.
I checked everything ... no errors to be found. Just no connection.
After half an hour we found the reason: Someone inserted the SIM the wrong way.
*facepalm*
How the hell can someone put in a SIM the wrong way? There is only one way it'll fit in.
I don't get it.7 -
13 fucking USD in shipping for a 9 USD rubber duck? Fuck no.
Spend $2 a month and most likely forget I am now subscribing to devRant++? Yeah, sure. Why not, right?
Seriously though, thank God for this platform, I'm luckily not the only one with struggles..5 -
When I see two fields, one for username and one for password, I expect I can fill them out immediately subsequently with only a tab in between. While typing my password I DON'T want to get sent to a page where I can enter my password only: I was entering it already! Sometimes I even make it until I pressed the enter key that was supposed to log me in, but then I'm kindly requested to reenter my password. At that moment I not-so-kindly think: FUCK YOU Microsoft, you should know better. Even when logging into Visual Studio for fack sake3

I'm the only one who up votes most of the rants and expecting in return up votes on my own rants too?4

Am I the only one who hates these 9-5 work times?
Right now it's almost midnight and I'm awake and my mind is productive, but I know tomorrow at work I'll be tired until lunch atleast and only from like 3-6 on I'll start being really productive. Wish I could work from like 5pm to 1am..12 -
A while back I feel asleep on the couch on the day of the state of the union address.
My deadass mind heard someone asking what the "state of the unit tests" was and I leaped up and said "there aren't any! i'm sorry, it's only a small project anyway".
Thank god no one else was there... 😂 -
My tech lead keeps assigning me incident tickets in the company's worst legacy app because I solved some bug in it a while ago. I'm the only one who gets assigned these.
If this keeps going, I know for sure that I will be regarded as the designated developer for this application. Then I will be truly fucked.5 -
I'm sick of the tyranny of websites who say your password must include at least one shady character, one special agent, and a number of other filthy things. Only makes your passwords impossible to remember, hard to type, and not a bit more secure.
"mynameisronalddumpandimanorangehairedorangutan" is a million times more secure than "P4$$word".13 -
Tonight is my school's prom and I'm the only one of my friends that's not going. My original date cancelled on me and the other one ended up getting a boyfriend and cancelled too. Oh well.
(Am I capable of posting about something other than my personal life? Holy fuck I don't have many posts that aren't about my personal shit)8 -
I'm not the only one who see's something wrong with this ad right?
*Wording isn't quite right lads*6 -
It's sad. When developers create the application and ONLY know how to lunch it by clicking that green button in the IDE, having no clue how to package and launch it properly...
it makes me sad.
Now I'm supposed to dockerize an application no one knows how to launch outside the IDE.15 -

Am I the only one that devRant almost completely replaced Reddit for the "I'm currently waiting on something so I'm browsing" spot?
Since I've been on devRant, my time on Reddit and even HN diminished quite a lot!
Long story short, this place is amazing :P4 -
So I have attended AWS tech bootcamp yesterday and today.
One thing I notice is everyone either have Mac laptop or other laptops with Win10.
I'm probably the only one with Linux distro. 🤔
I feel special and at the same time, lonely.7 -
I swear preparing an app update that's going to be deployed to 500+ people stresses me tf out.
I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way.9 -
Was venting to my sister about the BS I'm dealing with one of my projects at work. Specifically the convoluted way we're building a prototype and the way all the revision requests are just going in circles.
Sister: Your job sounds annoying.
Me: Only when other people get involved.
Truer words have never been spoken.5 -
A week ago I put in my two weeks at the current company I'm a Software Engineer at because it has been one of the worst places I have worked at and start work on July 5th at a new place as a Senior Software Engineer and have heard only good things about everything! Can't wait to start!!!!2

There's nothing like cleaning out a cupboard of stuff you have long since moved on from only to find this hidden in the corner.
I once had a Mac, it's still a piece of shit and I'm not convinced Apple ever made life easier to use one of these 😅3 -
Left one company on Friday, starting a new one Monday. This means the only programming I'm doing this weekend are the fun personal ones!
-
You know what is disappointing?
When you struggle with something and then you discover that the solution was clearly stated in the documentation.
In short, I'm an idiot. But I still got one upvote on my question on stackoverflow so apparently I'm not the only idiot out there. Arigato, idiot-tachi, we need to stand together so we can fail together.2 -
Since learning electronics I have a new found love for fixing peoples printers:
Now I actually look at it before saying "yep it's fucked! Better get a new one, do you want me to toss the old one for you?"
I'm now only one rail away from having a cnc machine.1 -
I'm currently working in call center. Making them a management system for agents. I'm the only developer there. No one asks about the progress even the owner doesn't know a thing about softwares. This gives me a freedom to do work when I want and how fast I want. But because of this I don't care anymore about the little things. and I have adopted some bad programming habits during my stay. Should I quit or what?6
-
Everytime I open Android Studio for the first time. I look at my code and I'm like "What is this? What was I thinking?". But 30 minutes later I'm so deep into the code I'm almost in a trance. Tell me I'm not the only one.5
-
The only reason I'm still using WhatsApp or Facebook is because my classmates have a social group in which they share important information and tbh that's easy than dealing with emails.
Have to deal with bullshittery for one more year.9 -
I'm the only one annoyed by the emoji abusing programming influencers?
In particular I hate their presumption in proclaiming themselves experts in something just after following a swallow online course on it.15 -
So the company I'm interning in just got a project in WordPress from an old client. I'm their "WordPress backend guy" apparently coz I'm apparently the only one who seems to know WordPress. The site has multiple malwares and they want to redesign the thing too. Work starts on Monday and now DevRant algo is showing me a lot of WordPress rants. Guess good times are ahead.4

When I open sourced one of my projects on GitHub I thought "I got a small but good user base (70k), I think they are some good developers ready to improve the project and send pull requests".
I only received translations. I'm (a bit) disappointed.6 -
Am I the only one that lives in fear of friends/colleagues finding out I'm on devrant?
I've already deleted a few rants in which I described something that happened between me and someone else in fear that they might find out.14 -

I'm literally the only one who locks the screen here at work.
Always makes me wanna do something to teach then.
My boss always leaves the screen unlocked with sublime opened and goes to lunch!
I think someday he was logged into production also...
And I'm like: seriously? wtf...
I lock my screen even when I'm home alone... yes I'm that paranoid...
No one is gonna "Greek question mark" me 😂18 -
Am I the only one who feels overwhelmed, excited, confused and in an anxiety/desesperation-scene on developing JS base de software.
Don't judge me, I'm a newbie10 -
So, the other day, my teacher told me not to use goto in C#, with only the reason that "it is bad".
Okay teacher, I'm going to continue using it until you give me a valid reason. For example for making one loop instead of two. .-.24 -
Am I the only one who gets extremely nervous the night before an interview as that technical test can encompass the entire academic field of CS. I'm just worried I'll forget the difference between a clustered and non-clustered index or fail to convey the difference between TDD and BDD.
I'm ten years in to my career now, so I 'should' know my stuff. I've produced the tests my self, hired other devs, but I still feel the nerves.8 -
I'm really sick of the "six-figure" advertisement that the industry uses to encourage more people to go into programming. The amount of people who hate coding with a passion but are in it because they want money is staggering. A lot of them end up dropping out. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who dearly loves this field. Truthfully, this approach won't resolve our retention problems.2

Just took out my four wisdom teeth at once. I can't feel my face, I look like a balloon and I'm drooling like I'm about to eat a delicious cake.

Whenever Facebook decides to do one of its fancy animations about all the things you've posted pictures of in the past month etc. I'm sure they expected people to be posting pictures of parties, holidays etc.
I only post either pictures of my pets or something I'm working on (running cables in walls, cutting up bits of wood, decorating etc.) So it looks utterly ridiculous when one of those animations plays.1 -
Being the only dev in charge of the project, makes you the one to be blamed for.
The God saviour, shiny armoured back end developer that joined the "team" (only me) to help into this new project Just Said in a meeting:
- "I wont code anything for this new project, I can't get the point of It"
So every meeting was
- "why feature X is not ready?"
- "I'm waiting the endpoint for It"
- "well, then mock It"
Now I fucking give up.
One month mocking things and "presenting" features that don't even exist. -
So I'm about to buy a laptop, and as any good developer Im already thinking on what are the first things I'm going to do with it, so far I've this list:
1- Enter BIOS and make sure everything is right.
2- Boot and configure all the crap that Windows asks
3- Download and install chrome and uTorrent
4- Download Fedora
4.5- Format the HHD
5- Partition my SSD and install fedora
6- Configure my dev environment, IDEs, runtimes, git aliases etc
7- Install Windows in another partition.
I'm I the only one with a routine?10 -

I was telling MisterArie how to get into the productive mode and this analogy pop in my mind.
Getting into a productive mode is pretty much the same as having intercourse.
You just have to successfully start the first push and the rest will eventually follow along smoothly.

#arduino #led matrix
Hey guys.
So, this is my first led matrix using a 74hc595n, I did all the connections right, isolated the cathodes (-), and when I tested, I only connected one cathode (to test one row, when almost all the lights turned on, in all rows doing a chacing... So I disconnected the negative wire and it still works.
One led in the arduino blinks (L).
GND is only connected to the shift register
All the rows light up doing a colum chase when there is no negative.
I'm astowned.....3 -
I'm I the only one who thinks Web development has a different feel. It's just so overwhelming. All of the learning is.4

Guess it's time to ditch ProtonMail as well.
Translation: "[Update Google play services.] ProtonMail won't work until you have updated Google Play Services."
I know I'm almost an anti-Google nazi at this point, but ProtonMail was one of the only remaining apps not needing Google to work, and now it's a "sin equa non" condition. I'm very disappointed. Guess I'll have to switch this address to Tutanota or host my own email server.
Edit: why the fuck would my autocorrect capitalize nazi?13 -
Not being able to write code only using pen and paper :/
I had one job interview where they ask me to iterate a tree using my preferred language. I felt so uncomfortable.
And my problem is only the pen and paper.
I'm able to write working code without any code completion even without highlighting in any shitty editor. But when it comes to write code by hand on paper it feels like my programmer brain side turns off.1 -
I'm not the only one that still regularly(daily) listens to the devranters spotify playlist, am I?

So I'm at a hospital (everything is fine as long as I'm concerned) and there's this pregnancy sign... But it just hit me (not sure how to start this idea) sex is this amazing interaction between softwares so good and well coded that we already know what can create, not only that but the hardware (with some flaws here and there) makes such great UX! Seriously, the join of code (one of the hardest code I know) to make a better code and the interaction thanks to the hardware is great! Thoughts?10

Working with javascript with java experience is like 'really? you can summon the method from no where and you have one and only god var? ' I'm feeling so insecure.1

Am I the only one worried with the OS wars lately? Microsoft and Apple trying to gain even more control on everything and Linux remaining at less than 2% on the desktop. People are oblivious to the fact that their personal freedom is at risk, and don't you dare tell me otherwise. Companies knowing what we search or what files we have on our computer, having the ability to control us and force us to follow their rules. We have a choice, and I'm not talking about destroying the economical system a la Mr. Robot, but moving to the Open Source world, not because it's more secure, faster or some such shit, but because it's the only way to ensure freedom on one of the biggest part of our lifes, the digital part. My concerns may be exceeding the normal, and I'll hate it to be right, but I'm afraid that if this goes on, in a few years, we'll understand that we made a big mistake...21

am I the only one who noticed that devs nowadays have a social life. for example going at the bar, party all night etc. I'm actually jealous.2

jumped one of my backends from .NET 6 to .NET 8...
no breaking changes...
all nuget packages updated flawlessly...
well played microsoft, well played...
i'm incredibly suspicious and skeptical...
only thing missing is pushing the changes because bitbucket is doing "scheduled maintenence" that they apparently told no one about. 🤡

I'm I the only one who doesn't face any problems with windows updates? Not sure why people complaining so much about it and the rant feed is full of windows update problems. Strange!4

Whatsapp REALLY needs a feature to silence the notifications for messages that are image only!
I'm now stuck having to communicate with a group for work so I had to un-silence it's notifications but I get sent 100+ memes and videos a day by EVERYONE else.
As much as I love them if I have to stop coding to check my phone only to find a fucking meme one more time I think I'm gonna snap...3 -
I really enjoy programming but I don't care about having the latest smartphone or the more powerfull computer. I'm not a tech guy, not even a geek... Sometimes people don't understand me for that, am I the only one ?1

I think I'm still under NDA.
But I wanted to share, that shit after 6 months figured out that the ONLY time I can breath is weekend.
And I'm telling this in a GOOD sens. It's one of the reports I get 1-2 times a week, but this one struck too much close to reality ':)5 -
Being forced to migrate an application written to to run on Solaris 9, which uses Sun ONE Webserver, Netscape LDAP Server and Cold fusion and migrate it to RHEL 7.3 ppc64le before the 3rd of January (I was only told about the project this morning), and I'm told I *have* to use the exact same technologies and versions. I'm on leave for Xmas from the 22 until the 5th of Jan. I know exactly where they can put their arbitrary management deadlines.2

I'm fucking mad
So, we uses 2 laptops por person on my team, one is ours (I use my own) and the other is the client's fucked up windows 7 laptop.
We can only access their environments with this fucked laptops, which needs a VPN software and McAfee.
So, I'm in a fucking loop, where McAfee doesn't update and the VPN can't connect because of it.
I'm in lunch time already and still did nothing because of this piece of shit1 -
Am I the only one with sore thumbs from using a phone and typing at work all day? Everyone talks about their phone and features it should have but I'm just like "hardware ain't shit if you're going to break your hands using it"
I think it's a tall people with big hands problem.6 -
Man I'm only 4 years in and I'm so tired of writing bullshit code that no one cares about. How do people do this for 20 years. I don't know. Motivation is at an all time low. It seems stupid to me that instead being out there with the butterflies I am dying staring at a rectangle for days on end. FML.17

Guys,
I'm looking for a (second) VPS provider and stumbled upon one called SSDNodes. They have a 8GB RAM offer for $120/yr. Which sounds far better than the popular choices like DigitalOcean, Vultr, etc.
But the only reviews I can find about them are from their blog or some unknown websites.
Has anyone used them or heard about them? Also, any alternative suggestions? I'm going to be using it for Docker powered personal web projects. Not expecting a lot of users.6 -
How many of you fellas have thinkpads? Bought this refurbished unit about a month ago and the machine is great, really. Very happy with its performance, sturdiness & reliability.
Only thing I'm not too psyched about is the battery life. Probably need a new one as I'm hitting about 4 hours max on a 6cell.
Running Xubuntu 16.04, might switch distros as quite there are a few bugs in the new release but at the same time I don't wanna downgrade to 14.04.13 -
Would I be going too far out of my role as a developer if I write a coding standards/development practices/procedures guideline for the whole team dictating a set of rules everyone needs to follow? Basically telling people how they should be doing everything.
I'm senior developer but not the only one and also the youngest. No one has to follow it but I would plan to present it to my boss and his boss. I feel like I would come across (if not already) like "I'm better/more experienced than all of you, so you should do what I say because the way things are now isn't working and will only get worse".5 -
So I'm working on this prototype of indie game with two friends. Since we are only 3, I can't just stick to coding only... Problem is, I'm the only one realising that and I've ended up doing all the jobs that are missing... Texturing, a bit of modeling, organizing the whole team, shaders, animating and so on... And the two others just stick to their thing and are confident in the fact that I'll be able to handle all the problems. It pisses me off.
But I need the project to have some base experience, and alone, I would probably melt down under the stress. But every time a problem show up I'm basically alone, and my level of stress skyrocket... Not sure if I have the shoulders to finish it, but I have to. In fact I'm not even to the point of ranting anymore I'm just depressed >.>... At least when I'm working on the code and not the rest, I'm really enjoying myself.
Not sure if I should do something about it ._.2 -
Ever have one of those moments where you're running a service you built to update about a decade worth of police records, realize about halfway through that you fucked the loop and you're copying data from the first record onto every other record, and then just really wish that you had checked things better in test before running this on the prod server?
I'm sure the only reason I'm still here is because the audit log contained the original values and I'm good at pulling data out of it.1 -
I'm gonna start by assuming I'm not the only one who has to deal with this (because that's the case in almost any "Am I the only one that x?"), so here it goes...
How do you deal with the urge to use a framework / library for everything?
I started to notice this behavior in myself a few months back, "there's definitely someone who has already made this, so why should I reinvent the wheel?", and my biggest fear is to become someone who just links chunks of code 'till it works. Did you had to deal with this at some point? What was your approach to this "problem"?3 -
We have 7000+ employees and I'm the only one who do dev work. IT had special meetings how to handle my requests. In the end they told me to buy a separate laptop and keep it outside the network. Suits me fine :)4
-
Am I the only one who genuinely appreciates all the updated privacy policies and opt-in notices I'm getting? The GDPR seems like an unequivocally good thing, to me.2

Just found out that this whole time I've been using the awful, half-baked, abandoned library instead of the respected, feature-rich, popular one.
Why did it appear first in my search results? Only god knows.
Oooofff I'm so pissed right now😤5 -
I'm making a devRant API wrapper for Dart. The point? None! Just to get better at the language and mostly make my own life easier. Open source or not, seems like I'll be the only one to use it. Or am I? Is anyone else (I know ewpratten is) using Dartlang?7

Am I the only one pressing the report problem instead of reply in the Android app?
I'm right handed and report is closest and gets pressed...
Can we do an A/B experiment with switching them? Or maybe a setting?
@dfox4 -
First day at the new internship. Boss man is pretty nice, but there is a language barrier I have to overcome. I'm supposed to be given a laptop, but the IT guy haven't arrived yet. Good thing I brought my own. I have been seated in the corner of the office, away from the rest of the developers, whose names I already forgot. Apparently I'm going to be doing miceoservices, but I have no idea how.. Am I the only one this has happened to?5

I'm Programmer/Analyst in one of the hgh ranking BPO company here at Philippines.
I'm currently on a project, I'm on a team who's managing machines parts. The project is CATERPILLAR.
The biggest challenge here is if there is a outage on the system, the number of Severity 1 issues keeps coming like there's no tomorrow. And there's only 5 of us on Tier 2 which is managing this abends, errors, bugs in the system.
Is there a way on preventing this outage/connection error. Like HELLO IT IS A BIG COMPANY !!! HOW THE HELL THEY CAN'T EVEN MANAGE THEIR CONNECTION!!!!2 -
Am I the only one that almost never display the file' list of my project ? I'm just ctrl+p everything with sublime6

I just got called an expert for using Linux 😂 I'm taking this computer research in Psychology module (Matlab), and I was the only one using Linux.

You guys ever have to explain whole project to another employee because you are the only one that know and worked on this project.
Worst thing is that guy is not even a programmer and I have to teach him c# first 😤 I'm soo angry2 -
I'm very sad. I had to do 5 challenges in Hackerrank for a job and I managed to complete only 1 in the allotted time.
What makes me sadder is that in one challenge, the testing the compiler did was different than the challenge description (getting me failed tests).
Damned job hunting, I'm losing hope with each passing day... 🙁2 -
When I cannot sleep or when I'm half asleep I always think "in programming code". Like if my daily problems or issues where actual classes and methods I need to fix or implement.
This is super weird and I cannot do anything against it. I'm wondering if I am the only one who does this.1 -
I'm not always out of sigarettes but when i am, it's on a fucking Sunday and the store just opens at 13:00. Suffering here. And - yes, we only have one store open on Sunday. I live alone in this village. All my neigbors are cows and stuff37

The country where I'm from uses only one platform for online school (public schools from 1s class to High School).
I was curious to take a look at the website and they didn't change the create-react-app manifest.json in production.
Bonus tip. The teachers and students cannot login for the last 2 days.2 -
Monday morning: "Hey uuuh the client receives 3 mails instead of one and only one of them is good, there's a problem, go fix it"
Yesterday, me: - "Hey I've been looking everywhere, made hundreds of tests, there's a problem with the files attached to the mail, they're unreadable"
-" I told you it's in the code, you didn't look deep enough"
This evening: "Umm it seems that there's indeed a permission issue. So I'm gonna rollback everything you've done since Monday"
One year. One year and I live this hell. -
Only open source projects under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license can legally use even one line of StackOverflow.
That site's user contributions are all under a free license that demands all copies to use the same license. Does someone know if I'm wrong on this? -
First rant... I'm on a large project where en use Git. Apparently I am the only one who, after pulling the dev branch, do multiple local commits to track (and possibly) undo my local work before I merge into development again. Everyone else do ONE local commit. Am I gitting wrong?!4

Worst interview?
Last 7 or 8....
I took 3 years of formation to get a job in a specialized area... To be offered only minimum wages.
On one I felt so offended that I was rude to the interviewer... Stupid lady saying that small people only get minimum wages...
And I was rude to her again last week... I'm trying to change jobs and replied to a job offer from the same company (dissimulated, I only knew because of the email) my reply: no thank you... If I wanted to work for minimum wage I would go cleaning...4 -
someone on discord asked me "why do you code for such shit computers? they can't even play games and you can only do one thing at a time, just program for new computers"
because if i'm gonna suffer in the name of curiosity i'm gonna make shit for other people to look at thx
back to suffering from a 1KB RAM limit5 -
I think I'm not the only one that wants an option to only show original content in the joke/meme category 😘5

I take a task, break it down in smaller tasks which can be done in one day, more if some problem came. But let's say if it finishes within a day and I have free time, I don't start the next thing instead I feel good that I'm done. Is it only me? 🙄3
-
I'm a workaholic.
My boss literally told me I've only used 1 PTO day this year and with only 2 weeks left I HAVE to take at least the rest of this week off.
Guess... I'm getting a really long weekend, took tomorrow thru Friday off, Monday and Tuesday are holiday, so only 3 days left of the year after 5 today.
Not taking the last 3 days next week because I don't trust my one co-worker to do end of month/year procedures without me there to verify they didn't fuck up anything.
Now I just have to get through that time stressing about things I'm responsible for breaking while I'm not there.5 -
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that will say gaming.
Because of gaming I've been in contact with computers a lot and learned a bunch of things that would become useful as the base for learning coding.
Things as simple as using and abusing the file system, file locking and files principles, Googling stuff, etc.4 -
Having just been let go from a job I couldn't keep up with, I'm now confronted with a job search where every job description includes something like, "Must be able to multi-task across dozens of different projects per day as if you were six people in one."
I'm seeing a pattern here. Apparently, the productivity of only one person is all that is needed to run an entire department's worth of work.1 -
I just came out... as a senior developer. Got a promotion and that's great. But I have been a generalist software engineer so far. I do frontend, backend (which is what I'm best at), some devops, management etc etc. But as a senior dev, I'm starting to feel that I have to specialize in something. I'm the guy who can do anything, but when discussing about tech stuff the other senior devs looks more "smart" (it's only one of the small things that frustrate me). I like being generalist, but I'm starting to feel the necessity of specialzing and be a reference in some technology, contributing more to company frameworks, open source, etc.3
-
I would be fine with not having this meeting if it hand been on the books for 2 weeks. But I didn't want to have it and now I'm the only one here.1
-
I'm a little afraid of what I'm doing. I just asked my boss to change my current role, almost on site, with a new one requested by the global function of my company. If they accept I will be traveling >80% of the time. I know I will miss my little daughters but I also know that this is maybe the last chance for a step forward in my career. I'm sharing my feelings only with my brother and devrant people.10

At work, we have a lot of daytime spenders (they just hang around so they do not sit at home all day).
I'm the only one in the entire company with somewhat decent programming experience (and I have to admit that I'm still pretty bad at it).
A few (4) of them have been assigned to one of the biggest projects (potentially even bigger than the one I work on daily) the company has ever had.
here is the fun part:
- 2 of them only just started coding and have no clue what they are doing at all (they heavily struggle with HTML).
- 1 of them overengineers everything (in a bad way) because she doesn't know how to do it somewhat properly.
- 1 of them doesn't even code (only sitting there giving ideas n stuff... basically the "client").
As a bonus point:
- None of them knows how to database
- None of them knows how to back-end
- None of them knows how to design
This is going to be fun, especially since I'm going to refuse to have my hands in there even the slighest outside of recommending stuff (like using a framework, certain libraries etc.) :^)1 -
After only having done linux and web projects for the past few years, our company took over an old WindowsForms program written by a guy who only (poorly) knows C. It's some of the most foul code I've ever seen... And I'm the only one in the company who knows how to write C#...1
-
I just realized that I may be hard to fire because I create a lot of apps. All other devs on my team work on the same big projects and maybe share code more.
But I tend to be the only dev for a lot of my work. In addition to building and deploying a few standalone projects.... That no one else has used. I write usage and design docs but nobody reads those.
And one application is very complex, has many parts. It even took me a while to pick it up at first and I've been the only dev on it for years... So built a lot of things on top.
Today I was actually talking to the business team that uses it and they were like when is feature A, B, C going to be done. And I finally said, has to be one at a time bc I'm the only dev...
Though last week I did ask for some help to look into one of them while I worked on another more complex one but I gotta train them. And well their part involves only a small part of the entire app. -
I code for 2 1/2 days straight, I'm in the zone, no comments, because I'm not in some comp sci beginners class, finish up, test it the only problem is with... All of it... Just considering writing another program to comb through that one and find the mistakes for me3
-
Yeah sure random tech recruiter, I like to be emailed directly on my email account that is only visible in that one regretful commit I made several years ago.
Definitely won't make me paranoid about your privacy practices.
On the other hand, it's refreshing to know that I'm somehow eligible for a senior position after 3 years experience1 -
My coworker (who didn't study cs but has been with the company for 2 years now) was given the task to write a script that uses a csv file as input. The file name? "csv.properties"
Everyone still calls it a csv file and I'm the only one who cringes.1 -
Last day of my internship and I'm the only one in the office... most people have off or are in meetings and my manager is coming in late. My summer project is done... I don't know what to do with myself3

I'm still learning so take it easy on me, I'm trying to learn typescript and Factory pattern, hope I did it correctly this time :)

My father mainly believes I'm the one fucking his settings up. I only use his computer to read my e-mails. Once a year.
My mother keeps asking me: "what about your work? Shouldn't you be doing something about THAT instead?" -
I guess I'm the only one on here who doesn't have devRant stickers...*goes to place my order*....along with a devRant shirt.7

How do you guys prevent burnout when working on a side-project? I'm probably not the only one here, with multiple unfinished projects.3
-
The worst part about working for a big company is that whatever is the problem that you google the solution is always like "try changing this global parameter that only the CEO has the privileges to change" or "the only solution is to raze to the ground your 1 year old technology and use this state-of-the-art edge solution".
And it looks like I'm the only one that complains about this.
I mean, really do people have no constraints when they work?1 -
am I the only one for whom all of the ++ notifications are just white noise?
i mean... I'm happy that my text/thought was good enough for you to be worth of one mouseclick, but I don't care.
give me an actual human thought/response.
anything else is worthless or irrelevant, really...7 -
nested ternary operators
like/dislike?
I used to hate them cuz I would have to break them apart just to understand them, but now I use ternary operators so much, nesting at least one level is ok for me.
but i'm the only person that reads my code, what's the concensus.. nesting one level bad?
I wouldn't want someone reviewing my code if they couldn't wrap their head around a simple ternary, so if only myself or people more experienced than myself will ever read them, then fuck it, i'm using them10 -
Trust me dude I can totally code but only alone and not with others around where no one can see me. Where no one can see me 🤥 Is there a Sunkist machine on the floor with my office? I'm the new senior developpah! Develll-opp-bah! Senyyyyawwww! Devel0PPA!🤪🙃

Nicest part about working on my home server: being able to just blindly update.
Who cares if that breaks kibana or my plex server? I'm the only one using them.
It can be downright cathartic to just run sudo apt-get upgrade3 -
Am I the only one annoyed that the headphone jack on the new MacBook Pro is on the right side? Being right handed, the headphones cable really bothers me when I'm using the mouse.2

My writing is so bad that usually I'm the only one that understands it
My excuse is that as a programmer I won't be writing by hand that much2 -
Am I the only one wondering when the IT bubble is going to burst? I mean, I'm getting paid ridiculous money for things that could be done by trained monkey, I barely work more than 4h per contract and every year I either get a raise or swap job for one that gives it to me. How long can this go on? When the big tech layoffs started I though that's it, but nope. How the hell does this function12
-
My manager asks, in Slack, if we can change the auto-tagger to update the patch instead of the minor version. I respond by saying, "Yes, it's in the Jenkisfile. Really we should switch to just <major.minor> and drop patch."
My manager asks why and I go on to say the last number is useless (unless you ship software externally and need to hotfix or security patch a minor release; internally they serve little purpose).
At my last job we dropped three numbers for two, and most other teams here only use two numbers.
He sends a link to the semantic versioning website.
The next day one of the other developers sends it to me in a private chat as a joke. 😂😅 I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks our manager shouldn't be a manager. -
Behing fuked almost every day because others don't clean after them... Like... I'm the only one who doesn't reply back, so... Almost every fuking day...
-
Am I the only one who hates that Slack has added a new `Drafts` section?
Like WHY TF? On one hand, I'm having some important work talk, and then I realize that I cannot see my boss's chat anymore and then I have to always look up and see the horrible Drafts section.
Although it is becoming second nature after a million times, I just don't like this feature at all.
IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END?7 -
Monday morning, we were told by our teacher that we had one week to create a clustered system with virtual machines , handled with 2 hypervisors, and the whole thing must come with high availability
These are the kind of stuff that make me doubt about becoming devops later, 3 days in and I'm only starting to get what we're doing, but I'm such a massive dead weight for the rest of my group 😵😵 -
Postgresql kept shutting down at odd times. Then it became predictable. I googled, went through mailing lists, archives, old threads, Stack overflow, friends, family, my bosses, my old colleagues, forums, chat groups and paid redhat support.
Apparently, I'm the only one and the first on this planet to have this problem. And it's scary.6 -
Does anybody use Freelancer.com? I'm currently in an argument with their support chat minion about how private or not-private the project's contents are AFTER the project is awarded. She's telling me that both awarded and unawarded projects are completely exposed to the public Internet, sensitive file attachments, chats, everything, unless one upgrades to Private status. If one doesn't like that, she says, one can always delete one's project for only $5. Does anyone else have experience to share in this regard? I find this incredible.2
-
Failed the interview I was hoping for.
I already had 3 tech rounds, this was 4th and god I couldn't solve anything. Other rounds were fine but only this one was bad. I feel so exhausted, I finally thought that I'm out of this shit hole but no I have to continue working day and night. :( :(2 -
Two questions about devRant itself:
- Is the overlapping element on purpose (anti normie filter maybe) ? Of course not, but am I the only one having it, knowing I have it since day one ?
- Is there no option to change password, or I'm just blind ?7 -
So I bought this HP laptop about a year ago thinking HP was actually reliable. But oh boy was I wrong. The fucking screen cracked within the first 2 months, because of a small drop from a table, even while it was in my backpack. And the plastic casing is flimsy. It's only been a year, and it's already slowing down because of, what I'm almost positive is age. I've been careful not to do or download anything that might give it a virus. And this thing is supposed to last me another 2 years till college. And, it's fan is the most annoying thing ever. It'll run even if I'm not doing anything super demanding like browsing the internet with only a couple tabs. I'm not one of those people who usually have a ton of tabs open. What's worse is that it's the only machine I have to code with. The school chromebooks are complete shit, and I avoid them at all costs, my cs class has PC's to use but I can only use them during school hours.9

I'm the only one who open YouTube looking for a tuto but end up watching weird stuff and forget why the hell I'm watching YouTube !!!5

Hey hey hey, stupid poll time! Yay!
Okay it's only the second one but let me dream
If you had one of each thing that makes your dev life what it is, which one would you pick?
Let me explain a bit: I mean IDE, drinks, language, coworker, project... If you had to keep ONE think in each "category" of your job, what would they be?
-----
Mine would be:
JavaScript (I know some others are better, it's just my most fluent one), Atom IDE, Orangina (drink, for the ones not knowing) and my most powerful laptop out of the two. Those would be the things I'd keep if I had to.
-----
Please don't bash me on my crappy question, I'm just wondering >.<8 -
Am I the only one that feels like the Linux sound driver (alsa) have a more clean sound than the windows drivers? I'm a pianist (at least I'm playing the piano in my free time 😜) and I feel more comfortable with the sound on my Linux. (I use the same physical piano modeling software on both systems)1

Joined a company 7 months back, was told they would be hiring other Android developers; a prospect I was excited by as I have not had the chance to work alongside my own kind.
Still no one hired, I'm the only Android dev and I'm still teach and working by myself. What should I do?!3 -
Every developer thrives to be the best. But, it's not only the skills, hard work or knowing infinite languages makes you the best. It only makes you the good.
Along with skills, hard work & the languages, the best one needs to have those instincts about the possible solutions to a problem and ability to decide and implement the most efficient solution cleanly in least amount of time.
I'm thriving to be the best. Are you?3 -
Why is it that I'm some able to get things working only after I make a guess complaining to technical support about how it's not working...
And it seems no one else has raised the issue.2 -
I know I can't be the only one of us that listens to dev related podcasts. Does anyone have any good ones they'd like to share? I'm looking for something more entertaining than Software Engineering Daily, yet more informative than MS Dev Show.1

Am I the only one that knows a couple of front end javascript front end frameworks but just can't figure out a good design?
Designing has really been a big problem and I'm thinking of sticking with back end development.5 -
May have asked this before but couldn't get an answer from any of the "experts" at my company so...
How do you store/pass in db login and certs for testing/debugging from your own machine?
I'm using Java Spring and the way I'm thinking of is to override the application.yaml, in the Debug configs, to point to one that has the credentials but only shared within the team?11 -
Every time I want to check my balance at my bank, instead of placing my account identifier (in my case, my national identification number, equivalent to the SSN), I end up typing '192.168 ...' until I realize what idiot that I am! LOL. Please, tell me I'm not the only one ><.

When I work for clients I despise, like those who ask for 10 things and while you're at it, those 10 things become 25, I just start the timer, go on reddit/twitter for some time and when I'm tired I start actual work...
Am I the only one like this? -
Finally, a well deserved upgrade from my reliable core i7 5500U laptop. This puppy packs a punch and has style. Wanted a MacBook Pro(newest models are so beautiful) but just seeing the price tag hurt my wallet; anyway I'm happy with this one, my only concern is getting used to the weird power button location9
-
I'm not a fan. Harder to collaborate and discuss things with coworkers. I'm constantly fighting the urge to turn towards my gaming pc and start playing something. I only have one monitor instead of the 2 I have in the office. I suffer from depression and the social isolation will definitely exacerbate that. The commute to my office is less than 15 minutes so I'm barely saving any time there. Pretty much the only benefit for me is not needing headphones to listen to music.1

Fucked up my old phone (picked up an overheating phone with super cold hands and the screen exploded) and my new one is way faster despite having almost exactly 1/2 the CPU power (8-core 2.13GHz in old, 4-core 1.4GHz in this one) due entirely to the Android build not being dogshit. They both only have 2GB of RAM, so i'm still sitting at like 300MB of free RAM with nothing running, but it's a start.7

I need your help please !
I'm about to buy a netbook to use it as a portable dev environment ; it should be able to run Eclipse, some code editor, GCC, and a virtual machine.
I've found a Lenovo E135 with 8GB RAM for only 100€ but the main problem is that his processor is an AMD E2-2000 (only 1,75GHz, and AMD)... Will it be enough to do what i want ?
I've also found a Lenovo Thinkpad x230 with a Core i5 (2,6 GHz) and 4 GB RAM for only 170€ but the problem there is the battery (the core i5 consume much more power)
Which one should i buy ? (Knowing that i have only 100€ but i could manage to get the missing 70€ for the x230)
Thanks for your help !10 -
I'm working in two projects at same time, but only one is paying, apparently the free one wanted me to work at the weekend without telling me to do.

We use celery at work, and one of the issues we face is that we use Django logging.
I'm not sure how it happened, however we only get 1 level of tracebacks from it now.
This has made debugging painstakingly difficult, since we have to manually traverse the code every time.
(we're in the process of moving to sentry, and we'll get our full logs back soon)1 -
Been 6 months at this one company and still don't have a good grasp on many things, I'm also almost absolutely useless in oncall and always loop in someone else, it's like my brain just afks.
I'm sure everyone has that one dumb Dev on their team, guess it's me this time, I can sense the annoyance from my teammates by my stupidity so far, there's just so much to learn about domains and specific things that only come up when things break, idk how to gain proper knowledge without someone babysitting me and Its shit for someone to do that (I'm not a junior Dev)12 -
Any top tips for recruiting or things you look for in an ad?
Our company has just advertised 4 roles (one was a junior PHP/JS dev role) and we got 90 applications. Only one was for the dev role, and we decided not to pursue it.
We're keen not to go the recruiter route, they cost a ton and that means less pay for the dev in the end. Plus, you've only got to look at this week's rants to see how they work!
Every day without help feels like an eternity of ever shortening impossible client deadlines for me. 😩😭 (I'm the main dev on a team of 3 including our PM)5 -

When you're a better programmer then your tech teacher (he studied video editing in college so he gets a break) so you're expected to resolve everyone's tech issues while you don't know much yourself so you have to cheat your way through. 😩😩

I'm currently migrating one of the companies services from technology A to an B based solution...
Today I had to remotly troubleshoot an error occuring somewhere on our client's backend application, that wans't enabling us to register any given webhook to our endpoints...
We finally gave in and looked up the data packets using a sniffer only to find that the only difference was that in the A technology project our staff ended up returning a Status Code plus the respective Reason Phrase, in our newest version we only send the HTTP Status Code... Guess who wasn't aware of HTTP 1.1 RFC consideres the Reason Phrase optional and an unecessary overhead??? God dammit... In simple terms...1 -
I'm currently using team viewer to access a computer of a colleague because only they have access to a vpn I need. So once I'm on the VPN I can then ssh into a ec2 instance. There are several ec2s I need to access but I've only been given direct access to one. Once inside that ec2 I can use it to ssh into the other ec2s....
Dawg..... why

So, the main system we develop and "maintain" is a horrible monolithic huge project that has the majority of the code in one and only one god class.
On top of that, all the main logic is implemented directly in the "main" method (yes, the "public static void main"). Now every time you have to create a method to use it in the main logic, it has to be static!
God, I hate to even look at this class, let alone touch it, I feel dirty, like I'm touching a pile of shit. -
I'm planning a trip that involves hitting multiple cities in 2 countries.

How do y'all read programming books? Do you try to memorize them, redo all the examples on your machine or read them quickly just to pick up the most important points and to remember where to look if additional informations are needed in future?
Nowadays I always use the last strategy otherwise reading a single book would take me a year but I'm curious to know if I'm the only one.8 -
FUUUUUUCK
Spent 3 days trying to find out what I'm doing wrong and why the server cannot send emails in an obsolete project (https://devrant.com/rants/1806850). I started debugging the PHPMailer SMTP library (v2.0.3 since it is the only one that works with PHP4) and found out THIS SHIT.

I'm responsible of the smooth operations of the platform, i.e. I'm responsible if something doesn't work. As I'm the technical leader, cofounder and original developer.
However I have no control on installations scheduling, on feedback from customers, on new features planning, on installations tasks performed by the team. No resources whatsoever.
And everybody NEEDS me to perform even small tasks. I would delegate and automate if only I had the time to explain and develop scripts.
But I have zero time. So basically everybody is counting on me working 15 hours per day to get things done.
And one person is also claiming to be "in charge of operations".
He is actually only in charge of me.
I cannot exit from this vicious circle.
I'm like the house doormat.3 -
If my manager asked for an update only on ONE report on projects, I think he'd be a perfect manager. Right now, I'm having to update FOUR different things for everything I work on: an institutional ticketing system, management's summary view page for the same ticketing system, weekly report, and my personal logging journal.

Anyone here into self made drones? I'm building one and get get the video work, the camera + fpv sender work, but I only get the osd and not the actual video. Wired from the description provided by the shop I bought it from, seems alright.

Ok so I tried apple
And I hate it. The only Apple product I loved was iPod Shuffle that small little dumb box... That was love
And now, for the iPhone, I will now continue hating it. How do you guys manage to like it? I'm fucking stuck on making an Apple ID since morning. It is fucking showing a hell lot of errors one by one as I go on trying
BTW good news coming up after 2hrs8 -
the servers are down and I'm the only one working in the office because I have a lot to do that doesn't require pushing to production for some time...fml

I have no one to argue about this with, I'm the only developer in my place of work, but I can say that the arrangement of the import statements sucks my nuts no PR is accepted just because they want to see first inbuild imports, then third party, then imports from current projects, why why why!!! that doesn't harm anyone in the world!!!! but just my time!!!3

I'm pretty decent at learning from books, articles and other written sources but I really struggle with meetings and frontal lessons.

So I recently installed Arch Linux... I don't get it. I got one little error... easy "fix" though :/ The minimum is up in less than half an hour... then maybe installing a desktop environment (I like MATE)... and... that's it.
What's the big thing I missed?
Is it only because "da user has da force" and "da user is da control master"?
Is it only that the user (in this case me, myself and I) is responsible for every fckin package, update whatever?
I'm sorry for my stupidity but... I'm not sorry for my intelligence 🧠 🤪
It didn't feel special in any way :(
but was a bit interesting 🤔7 -
Still not using versioning even though I'm the only coder. I have a dev and a live version of the site and once in a while (like early this morning) I update the live site by mistake, writing over the safe file with the development one :S4

I found that when I worked on a Mac I only had one screen and worked quit productively. I didn't feel or miss only having one screen.
But when I'm using Windows, I struggle to work with less than two screens, in fact I could do with six! 😂
Is it just me or has anyone else experienced the same?
P.S. good to know I'm not alone 🤓

I'm friendly by nature.
I once asked one of my colleague for code related help. He was generous enough to commit it directly into the repo, only I'm supposed to handle.
It's been six month, and there is nothing I hate even more.2 -
I'm sure it already happened to you :
- Me : I don't know if it's a good idea to make this feature, it will take me hours and may impacts the stability of the app. We are only at one week of the release...
- PM : But the users really need this.
- Me : hum ok...
*Five minutes later, find out it takes only two lines of code to do it*
Me : I did my best and the feature is ready !
*Fortunately no one will check the svn logs :D*2 -
I'm the only one who doesn't understand how the fuck people dream about code/coding? I get it, you leave work and still think about a solution for a certain problem, that's normal. But dreaming/having nightmares about this shit is weird.4

I'm not hugely into Go, but I do get the appeal behind "only one binary output"
I'm doing C# right and end up with several different DLL files, executables, pdb and json. It's so annoying.
Thank god this is an internal tool, not something that needs to be packaged...9 -
WHY THE FUCKETY FIDGETS DOES THIS ERROR HAPPEN ONLY ONE FOURTH THE TIME?!?!

I was really interested in politics, like always knowing what a politician is doing or saying, watching live streaming of the European Parliament and things like that. But know I'm tired of politics, I'm from Italy and our politicians are shit, like for real. The only one that can beat them is Trump, anyway the real problem is that thanks to them now we have only two sides, you are with me or you are against me, no space for discussions, everyone belives to be right and that the others are wrong. Idk, I'm just sick to live in a country where everything is a mess, that's it.5 -
I recently began using plugins for chrome, that darkify the experience. One of them has a developer option, where you install the plugin locally from Github and it's pretty nice to be contributing to a project for once, instead of just creating my own 😊
Even tho I'm the only one who has contributed and the original dev hasn't written any code for the project for last couple of weeks... 😜2 -

First project I'm doing with C++.
I was using Eclipse (for C++ obviously) for some hours. It sucks.
Switched to VS Code. All the editor tool you can dream of are in. But there's no way to configure the project (includes, build system, toolchains…).
"What a fool" I say, remembering there's Visual Studio Community… which is only for Windows.
So I'm currently using BOTH Visual Studio Code and Eclipse.
Why can't there be ONE good, full featured and free C++ IDE for Linux ?38 -
Please tell me I'm not the only one hating Laravel. Been working on that thing for well over a year, my hatred for this thing grew so strong and vibrant I feel like I can see it right now in front of my face.

Don't you hate the subjectiveness of functional requirements and no functional requirements? I'm the only one?

Ever just feel completely multi-fucked by that release date stealthly planned behind your coding ass? So, right now I'm having to study the code of an old pretty complex Delphi calculation tool so I can migrate it to Matlab. There is no actual documentation.
The person who knows the tool best and only one left to have even seen the code is not supposed to know what I'm doing.
I'm supposed to talk him into giving me a quick (1h) walkthrough of the code without actually telling him why, or figure it out all by myself.
He feels too strongly about Delphi.
I kinda don't feel this ...2 -
Hello. I recently discussed the topic of online communication with my girlfriends. It's interesting that I'm the only one who hasn't used dating sites yet. Now I want to personally try to meet men who are on the Internet. At the same time, I will find out if it is possible to find a boyfriend online and start a relationship. And how do you think?20

I bet I'm the only one that reads spaghetti PHP better than whatever python script
I fucking hate all those ":" around the code.

Also, none really will change its mind anyway, so just don't start a war, please?6 -
Some days I think I'm the only one that makes mistakes.
Also.... Load balancers suck. Somehow his name info is being stripped so server falls back to the catchall. -
Using ReSharper is like becoming enlightened, or de-brainwashing oneself to see true reality. Of my entire dev team, I'm the only one who can see the fnords!
Unused identifiers, badly sorted modifiers, unused property setters, redundant `this`/namespace, redundant casts... Surely if they could see them too, such code would not survive! -
Glad to know I'm not the only one making such mistakes.

I hate the android development website. I'm trying to learn android development since two weeks and I didn't understand anything even though I was following everything the "Training" section said... This seems to be a user experience error to me.

I tried googling but either I'm blind or don't know what to google.. only managed to find how to connect to specific existing session.. :/6 -
Not really a programming rant, but how fucking hard is it to spell someone's name in an email correctly. There is no single key for 'ph' and if there were it would be no where near the letter 'V'. But then again I'm just trying to help you out with your simple SQL script which you can't find out why you're not inserting data and you're only the director of informatics. And your script is horrendous with multiple joins which are unnecessary. Create one source table instead of 4 inserts from one table and use one insert from one table ya idiot.

So I'm target multiple platforms with one of my c++ projects and on one of the platforms I the window manager is quite different, and one of the libraries can't be used. Thats fine for my needs, I'm just wondering what the typical way to allow for these differences is. Basically currently I've created 2 "main" files that have preprocessor code to only use he one that's right for the platform by having ifdefs at the beginning of each, I've kinda followed that methodology for the other files that are totally platform specific also. Is there a better way to go about this? Currently using msvc for windows compilation and a gcc-esqu compiler for one of the other platforms, where the compile command is built by a home made build tool.

I'm the only one here who cares little about hardware?
I hear people (even non IT ones) spending months in comparing computers and reading any technical spec (cache size, RAM frequency...) before buying one while I just give a glance to the main specs (CPU, RAM, GPU) and if they're decent enough and I like the price I buy, once I even bought a laptop while half drunk and I haven't regretted the purchase.2 -
I'm the only one which finds really frustrating when you return to a framework or a language after a year in which you haven't used it and you're forced to Google how to do any trivial thing with it again?
