"Can you put my site as the first result on google?"
I can add SEO to your site, just give me your preferred keywords, a description, and let's make sure we follow white hat best practices etc.
"No call someone at google and ask how much to go to the top of the list"
So you want to pay for ads or..?
"No get a figure I can pay to get to first page"
"Or can you just edit the google"
... And so I never renewed that contract ever again, the end.12 -
Every user of any app: "damn these annoying ads. I hate ads!"
Average devRant user: "Dfox, add ads please so we can support you more."
What a wonderful community (except those who repost memes). ❤️13 -

Few months ago I made an app for my buddy. Because it was simple soundboard app (it literally took me 15 minutes) I haven’t took any money. He said it’s for personal use only...
So he released it under his name on Google Play Store... And now he asks me to add advertisements... For free... When I asked him what can I get from it, he said “you can add your name to Credits”
That’s how you loose trust and buddies!22 -
Wan't your own personal devBanner?
Now you can have one!
We're building a powerful banner generator over here: https://devrant.com/collabs/...
The first version is up and running, still basic tho.
You can generate your own by calling this URL:
https://devrant.nuernberger.kim/api...
You'll have to replace "Kimmax" with your devrant name and the value after subtext with the extra text.
A cool domain is already on it's way!
We'll be working on a frontend and a ton of extra features to make this banner even more awesome.
If you got any nice ideas add them to the issue tracker here: https://github.com/cozyplanes/...
Have fun!95 -
Announcing a few new devRant Android/iOS features, available immediately in the latest versions of the devRant app which just went live.
1. As pictured, you can now easily scroll to the bottom of any long rant by selecting “scroll to bottom” in the ... menu of any rant with >= 10 comments.
2. At the bottom of any rant that has at least 1 comment, you’ll now see a button that allows you to refresh the rant (and scrolls to the bottom) so you can see new comments if there are any.
3. Any rant can be refreshed by tapping the “Rant” title in the title bar.
How did we come up with these awesome ideas/decide to add these features? For most of them, we didn’t! At least 2 of these were recently requested by devRant users (some requested a bunch of times) and we heard everyone and saw how much these were needed. Remember, you can always suggested features in our GitHub issue tracker: https://github.com/devRant/devRant - we always appreciate feature suggestions and ideas for improvements!
Just to add one note - we still have plans to improve commenting functionality, but we’re hoping for the time being these additions make things a little more intuitive.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks everyone!22 -
Before you're hired:
1. A binary tree?
2. Currying?
3. Higher-order function?
4. How does event loop work?
5. What is prototype?
6. What is encapsulation?
7. Can you draw an algorithm?
After you're hired:
1. Hey, can you add auth token and login to our app?11 -
Big client, sells products in 30+ countries.
Tries to generate newsletter subscribers, so asks for a system to send a coupon upon subscription.
2 days later, client calls in panic. “We have too many subscribers, our marketeers say it’s a bot issue, can you do something?”.
Checked the data, checked analytics, turns out there’s a lot of referral traffic from freebie-sites, no sign from a bot issue.
Called the client back, “sorry, but there’s nothing you can do about that, you wanted your newsletter to become popular. Not you’re the victim of your own success”.
Client: “can we add captcha?”
Me: “why would you want to do that? You don’t even have a bot issue”
Client: “to make it harder for people to subscribe”
I tried to talk som sense in their heads, but after 3 times I gave up and implemented the damn captcha. It’s still there, doing nothing but annoying thousands of people, including me...7 -
Benefits of being a dev:
Wife: "I just wish I had a program that could organize all my shit for my [work-from-home outside sales] job. My old company had much better software."
One week later:
Me: "Here honey: I built a program that will organize your business leads, allow you to search them by city, street, phone number, it detects when you have multiple businesses with one owner, warns you of duplicate information before you add it, and you can now launch phone calls with the click of a button. I've also put an app on your phone that can send and receive data from the main program."

I hate ZenHub. For those who haven't heard of it, it's an agile project management solution that is hacked (and by hacked I mean really hacked) on top of Github.
It's touted as being convenient because you can have all your issues in Github and then look at them in epics and board format. Sounds awesome. Except it's not. For everything "convenient" it does, it severely lacks the most basic ticket management features that make any ticket management solution usable. Ex., you can't copy tickets. That's right - if you're creating 20 similar tickets, which I've needed to do in the past, you must create each one individually. New ticket -> add labels -> add assignee -> add title -> add description and then submit. 20 times.
ZenHub is so bad and so poorly conceived that many of those who use it have lost sight of project management reality and are blind to the 300 other PM products out there that are better.
True story: a couple of weeks ago people were celebrating because ZenHub added functionality to allow you to define what epic an issue belonged in while you were creating it. For those who aren't familiar with what that means, let me explain: before two weeks ago, when creating an issue in ZenHub, to fill out this "epic" field, you needed to first create the issue and then edit it to fill in the epic.
Let me break that down in devRant terms: it's the equivalent of not being able to add tags to a rant until you create it and then go back and edit it. Complete lunacy is the only way to describe it. And when they added the functionality two weeks ago allowing you to do it all in one step, people praised them!!!
Yeah, ZenHub sucks.11 -

Me : yep. Sure.
After 10 mins.
Client : Hey, need a small change. The text field need to be little bit left.

Boss: Oh can you add this feature?
Me: I added that function already and you said to take it out.
Boss: Can't you just copy and paste it from an earlier version?
Me: No its really not that simple, I removed a bunch of tables and went to town cleaning the code so it's super quick and "sexy fast" as you put it.
I go home, work all night and forget to eat.
nextDay++;
Boss: Actually just hold back on that, I'm having second thoughts.

Client: We need to add a field to the model that serves as a unique identifier
Dev: You already have one, it’s the _id property
Client: We want another! This one is for a task number so we can make a connection between the database record and our ERP.
Dev: Ah I see. I can add that for you. Is this truly a unique identifier or will you be using the same ERP identifier for multiple database records?
Client: I already said it’s a unique identifier. One ERP record to one database record, end of story! To do otherwise would be absolutely ridiculous! You should think for yourself before you ask silly questions.
Dev: My apologies I just want to make sure to clarify exactly what the requirements are.
**6 months later**
Client: HOW COME I CAN’T ASSIGN THE SAME UNIQUE IDENTIFIER TO MULTIPLE DATABASE RECORDS??? CAN’T PROGRAMMERS GET ANYTHING RIGHT EVER??

Everything in application is aligned to right

(The PM is pretty technical)
One day:
Me: Could you create this subdomain?
PM: Sure, just a sec.
Me: Ohh and could you add a letsencrypt cert? (one click thingy)
PM: Why would you need that on this kinda site...
Me: Well in general for security...
PM: Nahh.
*walks away*
Next day:
(referring to my internship manager/guider as Bob)
Bob: Hey... we have a new subdomain!
Me: Yup!
Bob: Wait why is there no letsencrypt certificate installed...?!?
Me: Well, the PM didn't find that neccesary...
Bob: (Oo) of course it is... are we going for security by default or what?
Me: Yup agreed.
Bob: *creates cert and sets everything up in under a minute*
It wasn't a high profile site (tiny side project) but why not add SSL when you can for free?8 -
manager (not technical) : we need to add blocking feature to our social media.

me : hahahaha ... just ... delete ...

Hello, world!
Hey, it's me. It's been awhile. How have you been..? :3
For those of you who don't know/remember, I'm the lead developer of a Desktop and (to-be) Hacking Simulator Game. My project should still exist somewhere on here. I just thought I would hop on, and catch you guys up on my progress. ^~^
So far themes are a thing! You can add custom fonts, wallpapers(or just a desktop color) and set the color/opasity of everything in-game!
I have also implimented a modding API. It's under-documented, but it works very well! You can add apps, commands, or even redesign the entire interface using it. It executes modded functions on specific events, so you could really have it do anything.
As of yesterday, there is also a simulated FileSystem. You can navigate it using in-game terminal commands, and you can create and remove directories.
(in-game screenshots are also a thing, you can even set a timer - ps: this is a 100% mod! As are all apps and commands in the current unreleased version. PM me on Telegram @TheCyaniteproject to get a copy~)25 -
Dev: To send push notifications, please open a ticket to get access to the new tool we are using which is dedicated to managing push notifications and push notification campaigns.
Me: ok done.
*5 days later*
Tool owner: Can you please add to the ticket the reason you need access?
Me: “To use it”2 -
Are you done yet?
Is it ready for review ?
How far?
Any updates?
When can I check?
We are wasting time..
How long will it take ?
Are you saying this will take 2 days to complete?
😪😪😪
Pls raise a cup with me if you can relate.
Add yours too.8 -
Me: I have an input stream!
Library: I want a file.
Me: I can see your code, you will convert it to an input stream! Don't any of your constructors take an input stream?
Library: No. I want a file. Okay, you can also include an encoding.
Me: I don't care about encoding.
Library: Fine, just give me the file then.
Me: You mean I have to somehow convert my input stream into an actual file so I can give it to you?
Library: You're gradually catching on, yes.
Me: Can I add a new constructor myself that takes an input stream?
Library: Sure! Good luck in getting it approved by the maintainers and the new jar distributed everywhere, including Maven Central before your deadline.
Me: Fine, I'll just rearchitect everything so I can give you an actual file.
Library: And then everything will be fine.

Boss: A client has reported that he can't add products to the cart he gets redirected to "empty cart page" on safari or edge not sure, can you check it out?

Boss: ok don't mind about IE
Me (inside) I've lived long enough to hear that YEAH !!!
Goodbye my old friend IE hahaha :D4 -
Gotta love when a client uses "small" to describe anything they want to make themselves feel like it'll be quick and cheap.
"Can you also add a small system that reads people's minds?"1 -
Anyone else out there embedding an artificial delay in a splashscreen, just to shorten it in a future release so you can add to the changelog: "optimized startup time"?

A few weeks ago a client called me. His application contains a lot of data, including email addresses (local part and domain stored separately in SQL database). The application can filter data based on the domain part of the addresses. He ask me why sub.example.com is not included when he asked the application for example.com. I said: No problem, I can add this feature to the application, but the process will take a longer.
Client: No problem, please add this ASAP.
So, the next day I changed some of the SQL queries to lookup using the LIKE operator.
After a week the client called again: The process is really slow, how can this be?
Me: Well, you asked me to filter the subdomains as well. Before, the application could easily find all the domains (SQL index), but now it has to compare all the domains to check if it ends with the domain you are looking for.
Client: Okay, but why is it a lot slower than before?
Me: Do you have a dictionary in your office?
<Client search for a dictionary, came back with one>
Me: give me the definition of the word "time"
<Client gives definition of time>
Me: Give me the definition of all words ending with "time"
Client: But, ...
Never heard from him again on this issues :-P5 -
@dfox can we please add an optional 'vote' option in rants? :D It would be fun to check the preferences of people for different things.

Damn you stackoverflow!
Why can't we declare an answer as outdated or deprecated or just plain out wrong!
I like that you have so many questions, yet when the correct solution is a 0-upvoted by a 0-rep user hidden at the very bottom between a huge amount of wrong answers and whereas the *accepted* yet wrong answer has upvotes that are skyhigh, it just wastes my time.
All that is achieved is a feedback loop enforcing a faulty answer will accumulate ever more upvotes. And waste somebody else's time in the future as well.
I cannot add the correct information, as that would harm the author's intent. I cannot edit the faulty answer to state that there is a better answer, as that would be an attempt to reply. I can downvote it, yet that just a tiny drop on a very hot stone.
All I can do is add a comment pointing to a correct answer, yet that is easily overlooked.
Come on, stackoverflow! This is madness!6 -
Everyday, my developer friend keep complaining and talking our manager bad words behind him. So i introduced devRant to him.
Him: what is this?
Me: An app specially designed for developers for sharing their programming life.
Him: *after installed* , how can i add ur account?
Me: you cant add me, bcx everyone don't know each other here. *walk away and continue do coding*
After few days, i realized he always staring at his phone, guess what? Lol3 -
Client : can you add a calling feature to our android app?
Me : Ok.
*** after updating the app ****
Client : what is this **** dialog (calling permission request for android)!
Users are complaining about it and refuse to use the app!!! Don't you know I can get into legal problems with this???
Me :But you just asked for this feature?
Client : I want this feature but remove the dialog.
Me : you can't that's not how google works.
Client : I don't care do something remove the dialog or edit it but keep the feature.
Me : 😑😑😑😑 nvm I'll figure out something.
Ended up with copying the number to the dial screen instead of direct call from the app.7 -
"Hey mate, how are you doing?"
*deep sigh* "It's tough, but I'm managing"
I don't think it's a coincidence that the word managing is often used as a synonym for "Technically alive, but not in a state where I can progress personally, or add any value to my environment".
Now imagine packaging that desolate self-perpetuating feeling of apathy into a farce, propped up with practiced smiles and meet-speak, and calling that daily routine a "career".11 -
Simplicity is a prerequisite for reliability.
I put those words on the wall in giant vinyl letters, and I point to them every time someone asks me "can you add a frontend button which checks this external API and stores the correlation between the amount of rain and the sales numbers of purple buttplugs inside the user profiles?"
People always ask for one more column in a table, one more paragraph under an image — they never ask for replacement or removal of items.
So I force them. Want a feature? Fine, if you point at something of equal or greater complexity to delete.2 -

No comments allowed in JSON pisses me off so much.
Sure, I get all the arguments of "it's supposed to be a data-only format for machines", "there are alternatives which support comments", and "you can add comments and then minify the file before parsing"
But right now, when I just need to put a quick note inside a super confusing legacy package manager config about why certain dependencies to be frozen at a specific version, IT FUCKING PISSES ME OFF THAT I CAN'T JUST ADD A FUCKING COMMENT.18 -
CEO - So... We'll have a new side project, it's a small thing, I spoke with a guy, he needs just a small thing...
Me - Ok....... So, what do you need me for?
CEO - Not much, this guy started a project but wants your help on a small part, and you already did something similar for us, so it should be fast, just copy and paste and change a little bit. You probably know better than me.
Me - *Sigh* ... So `friend`, what do you need from me?
Friend - So, I made a crawler that is storing some information on a local file, I just need to add multiprocessing and multithreading, a producer-consumer system with a queue so I can automatically add new links every now and then, a failback system, so when a process doesn't finish, it should be re-queued and crawled later, store all the information on a database cluster (that is not set up), [......]
Me - And when is this supposed to be up and running?
Friend - Your CEO told me you could do this by the weekend. Can we finish this by Friday?
Me - *facepalm* FML13 -
I was watching this movie's trailer called Let's Be Evil, it did look promising based on the genre (Sci-Fi, Thriller, Horror) and synopsis (includes Augmented Reality (AR) tech) BUT as I soon was on this frame right here, I am not going to watch the movie now. 😂
You are making a high tech movie, at least do intend to add some realistic code snippets or scripts related to AR rather than showing some random plain HTML.
You can watch the trailer here : https://youtu.be/Nsbzf3bL4Qg
Code will appear around 0:156 -
When you love free dev swags
Thanks Mullvad!
P.S. @dfox @trogus Can you add the webcam stickers in the swag store? (Like the ones in the middle of pic)20 -
Just wrote a (PHP based) proxy which can cache resources being requested and serve them to clients.
The idea is that (I'm going to write a firefox add-on for it too, yes) you can install the add-on and any resource (js/CSS, general web resources which would be downloaded off of googleapi's etc) hosted with Google would be proxied through the server running the proxy, meaning that one wouldn't have to connect to the mass surveillance networks directly anymore as for static resources.
I think checksum verify stuff would still work as the proxy is literally a proxy, the content will be identical to the 'real' resource. (Not sure about this one, enlighten me if this isn't true)
Input appreciated!17 -
Was it it with clients and wanting to restrict the height of webpages?
Client: Can you make it all fit on the screen?
Me: What this particular screen?
Client: Well all screens, some people might not realise there is more content.
Me: What if the screen is tiny?
Client: make it smaller
Me: What if you add more content to it?
Client: Hmm, your the developer.
Me: Teeny tiny text coming right up.18 -
Can you add a feature so we can download images that our customers have uploaded?
Yeah sure I can see that being a really handy feature, but until I have the time to add a button would you try right clicking on the picture and using the option "Save image...." 🤔4 -
Manager: The way you built this doesn’t accommodate any of my future plans!
Dev: What future plans?
Manager: I have a bunch of different ideas, I haven’t decided which ones to go with yet or how it will all work but you’re making it so we’re running out of room in the UI. It’s too busy, you need to clean it up so we can add more stuff!
Dev: …10 -
Product owner:
Okay we have users and groups. Users have roles, roles have permissions, but groups can also have roles or permissions. Clients have users and these client-users can have special kinds of permissions. Now we need to add projects which have pages and special project users who manage the projects, but only the client-users can set rights for which project owners can manage pages. Pages are coupled to roles, and assigned to workflows, unless the client-user already had the permission to... wait where are you going?"

Thinking of auto adding ‘you dumb fuck’ to every email I send to a client. Fucking useless time wasting bastards.
Example: I’ve forgotten my password for the cms can you send me a link to reset it.
The login page has a link clearly labelled ‘forgot password?’.
I send a screen grab with a big red circle around the link and some polite text, which I was desperate to add ‘you dumb fuck’2 -
This is what happens to overworked PMs.
Me: When users create accounts with social logins, they don’t have passwords in our database. If they try to enter an email and pw on the login form, what do you want the error message to say?
PM: Can we add a modal that says “Your account doesn’t have a password, set one now.” And have a password field?
Me: ☠️ That…would…allow…anyone…to…hijack…an…account…
PM: Right. Never mind.12 -
Ops person: “Hey! Can you come fix this? I‘m trying to add a user and it keeps giving me an error saying that the phone number must be unique. What’s the ETA on a fix?”

My biggest enemy is what i call "development fork bomb".
My boss duplicates code on a daily basis. Instead of creating subclasses he simply creates new files by copying lines from other files. The projects class hierarchy is as flat as holland.
You can take a comment, do a project-wide search and you will find 3+ matches, an ugly hack i wrote exists 4 times in the project, and so on.
Worst of all, we spend more time on bugfixes than refactoring. With my power i could add a commit-hook to block or lessen this behaviour, but i cant. There's no program that can detect this reliably and sometimes it needs to be done.
This is a curse i'm stuck with appearently.6 -
@dfox maybe add a donate button? at this point i would deffinatly support this thing. i think you deserve it plus it will help you make this even a better place without been stressed out from monitization, which somtimes can ruin the whole thingy...
put it in the side menu or something3 -
Motherfucker, every fucking meeting on this project we have a fucking 3 week deadline to accomplish the fucking impossible.
And now they practically want me to rewrite the whole fucking application.
And my fucking boss can't fucking shut the fuck up and keep having "ideas" on new thing.
YEU FUKCING STUPID PIECES OF SHIT!!! HOW CAN WE ADD SHIT WHEN EVERYTHING IS HALF ASSED BECAUSE WE DONT STOP ADDING SHIT? FUCK YOU!7 -
So he is in the “elite” team as a “Sr” dev and i’m in the normal team as a ssr dev.

case “F”:

Google can you fucking not just kill off random projects that still have a very active userbase!!!
I know you want to merge the play music streaming with youtube music. But that is no reason to kill off the default music player on Android. Cause, y'know, A FUCKTONNE OF PPL STILL USE OFFLINE MUSIC!!!!
And to add more insult to this, Play Music is a default app on pretty much all Android phones. This means it cannot be uninstalled at all. (Unless you root) So thanks for the waste of space!!!17 -
I promise! Just because you can add ANN (Artificial Neural Network) doesn't mean you should!undefined ai is best for big data you don't use the fillet knife for everything ai is being overhyped9

What you see in that screenshot, that was earned.
I'm on the plane and I want an hour of free Gogo (read: crappy) WiFi on my laptop (so I can push the code I'm probably the most proud of, more on that another time). The problem is that the free T-Mobile WiFi is apparently only available on mobile.
So after trying to just use responsive mode, and that still (almost obviously) not working. I realize it's time to bring in the big guns: A User Agent switcher. Small catch: I don't have an add-on for FF that can do that.
So on my phone I find an add-on that can and download the file. To send it to my computer, I initially thought to go through KDEConnect, but Gogo's network also isolates each system, so that doesn't work. So I try to send it over Bluetooth, except I can't. Why? Because Android's Bluetooth share "doesn't support" the .xpi extension, so I dump it in a zip (in retrospect, I should have just renamed it), and now I can share.
After a few tries, I successfully get the file over, extract the zip, and install the extension. Whew! Now I open up Gogo's page and proceed to try again, but this time I change the user-agent. Doesn't work... Ah! Cookies! I delete the cookies for Gogo (I had a cookie editor add-on already), but I had to try a few times because Gogo's scripts keep trying to, but I got it in the end.
Finally that stupid error saying it's for phones only went away, and I could write this rant for you.22 -

Fuck you to the person at Lenovo who thought that it would be a great idea to support 16gb of ram and then put 4gb internal ram into it.
I can add an 8gb stick to it, totalling at 12gb. There are no 12gb sticks (as far I am aware of) so yeah, fuck 16gb "supported" by the mainboard, 12 is the maximum.5 -

Trying to learn some golang after a break.
Made http / https transparent proxy for personal project.
Mind: You need to add configuration file with domains you allow traffic and block everything else using list of regex.
Me: Ok I can do it, 4 hours later ok done
Mind: Why not make it differently by making list of url you can block and test this shit on fucking ads and stop using adblock that downloads content.
Me: ok that will be handy I can watch websites faster and drop traffic I don’t want to.
Funny fact, it works I broke analytics, logging, quantum shit fucks and even youtube plays ok.
Go is awesome for networking stuff lol.12 -
Coworker: hey can you do this?
Me: sure *couple hours later* it's done.
Coworker several hours later: that thing you did completely changed. Can you update it?
*checks the platform we use so non devs can create web pages* All of my code was erased and I have to restart and add even more functionality. Why the actual fuck would you hire web developers if you're just going to have other employees use a poorly built tool to build pages. Every fucking time something breaks in the shitty fucking app, I have to fix it. Or if it doesn't do some crazy functionality, I have to hack code in there to do it in the ugliest way. Fuck tools like this. Fuck companies who make money off of these tools/use these tools. And fuck the developers who make these shitty tools that give real web developers so much frustration.4 -
Summer is coming, and i suppose all of you will buy a new barbecue to cook some meat, but i have another economic alternative.
How to make a homemade bbq:
1) Take an old laptop
2) Turn it on
3) Install Android studio (also works with intellij)
4) Add a lot of gradle (or maven) depencies
5) Code something cool (or not)
6) Build and compile it
7) Now you can put your meat on your laptop
8) Enjoy your meal13 -

Rant about my application - mate thinks he can add features that are insanely hard to implement. Dare initiated. $150 if he does it, he buys me 3 rounds if he looses.
Proceed to give him the link to the repo. He downloads it and runs it in VS. Complains that it doesn't work and is broken...

@dfox can you please implement a gang feature? Someone assigns an hashtag to some people and everytime this hashtag is called, the team members get a notif.
Adittionally, maybe you could add gang stats (how many new rants, how many times the hastag was mentioned etc...)36 -

The project tech lead asks me to add some Docker configuration files sent by the client to a project. He gives me a zip file and I unzip it and add the files to Git. Job done.
Later he checks the commit and starts bitching because I unzipped the file and it should have been added as a zip. After much debate trying to explain to him that Docker wouldn't open the zip file to search for the Dockerfile he just says "Can you just do it? I double checked with the client!". I give up after giving him all the arguments why he is wrong and do it.
The next day the client checks the commit and comments bitching that I included the zip file and not the contents of it.4 -
A recipe for COMPLETELY hacking me off - ask for help, pretend my advice is bollocks, then rephrase it as your own and follow it up with a smart arse comment.
"Almond, could you lend me a hand with this regex? I'm trying to match this particular group, but only if it doesn't have 'foo' after it."
"Sure, take a look at negative lookaheads - that sounds like it's exactly what you need"
"Nah that won't work for me, because I need to check for more than one character after it, I need to check for 'foo'"
"What? That doesn't make sense, you can..."
"Ah don't worry, I've found the answer by myself now, I can actually just add '?!' before the text I don't want to match and it'll do it - I'm fast becoming a regex expert here! Let me know if you want me to explain this to you"

Guy: "We need you to update a few applications so we can get some new data. We have very important reports we need out of it!"

Guy: "Two days!! So we can start putting in the data then will have you create the reports."
...two days later...(in the spongebob narrator voice)
Me: " OK its done. Go in add the data you need then let me know so I can generate the reports."

I've just managed to add the ability to call functions to my compiler. Currently, the capabilities are rather limited but I am pleased with it.
It keeps the schematics of the source code well enough that it can handle

brain storming about system design on miro board
at the beginning, all devs add components they think that might be relevant for the system.
PM heavily moves everything around, deletes or changes meaning of added boxes without asking. after five minutes, he is the only one using the board, rest of the team is just watching.
PM: come on, guys. don't just sit and watch, you can also participate.
besides that, the resulting system in the end was complete garbage.7 -
My PM refuses to use GitHub to log issues and keeps sending me Google Doc slides because she wants to add pictures. You can do that GitHub too!4

So I'm playing around with Node late at night and decide to make something of it. Made a real-time 2-way communication system with NodeJS, Express and Socket.io. The UI currently looks cheap, but it's clean. Open multiple tabs to see it in action.
You can also send private messages by typing /p username message. I could add authentication here and also connect it to MongoDB.
Any other ideas or reviews? Also any other ideas for Node projects? Thank you.

-Hi, my PlayStation’s storage is almost full? Can you change it?
Me: yes, but why not just buy an external one....
-We can’t add games on it.
Me: ... See here. Read. It’s possible. How much storage does the PS have now?
-93GB
Me: ... Total? 500 GB?
-Yes, I think.
Me: buy a 4 TB one will last long enough.
-Ok. Can you come to install it if it’s arrived?
Me: Ok...
Can’t people just read on fucking internet how to connect an external drive to a PlayStation??
I don’t understand... I’m a software guy not fucking hardware...11 -
Great. Just FUCKING great. When I was looking at devrant, suddenly some add-ons crashed (correction: ALL add-ons crashed!). All other tabs flooded with ads. I go to the add-ons manager, and what is their SHITTY excuse?
"Starting in Firefox version 57, only extensions built using WebExtensions APIs will work. Not sure if your add-ons are affected? See Firefox add-on technology is modernizing and these Frequently Asked Questions for details."
Anyone of you fuckwits ever heard of LEGACY SUPPORT? Leaving some time so the other devs can adapt to your new brainfart technology?! Even fucking C++ has that. FUCK!

Users and Bosses.
I honestly don't know who is worse, the end user or the boss.
The boss thinks all you do is click a button and everything just works, so everything should take 30 minutes to complete, why on earth would it take a week to do something?
The user seems to think every tiny idea is the most important thing ever to add, so they tell said boss it must be added, and boss normally agrees.
I get it, Marge (Fake name), adding in a copy button because you're too dumb to press ctrl + c is way more important than updating the security after a Ransomware attack.
No boss, I can't add in 30 new things and make sure the security protocols are updated all before the meeting in 15 minutes.
If you think it's all so easy and just pressing buttons, why did you hire me? Anyone who can read and press a button should be able to do it....4 -

P: Hey, our release 2.0 is ready, but somehow I can't add tag to master. Could you try, please?
C: Yeah, sure.... Done... We are missing tag for 1.2 still, should we add it?
P: Oh, right, I forgot about that.
C: Ok, found merge... Done.
P: *displaying repo in GitBlit* Uh, now the order is wrong. And date is the same. Can we do something about that?
Me: We can just push that tag with replaced date. *just guessing*
P&C: You can do that??
Me: Sure

Me: *pushing tag* Check it now.
P: Whoa, nice!3 -

It seems like there are more lower-quality or duplicate comments on rants these days.
Please, save me some time and show a little respect for members of the community by ++ the comment you agree with instead of adding a nearly identical comment and tagging the commenter.
Additionally, comments like '@commenter 😂' when the great comment is still at +0 generally don't add to the discussion and should probably be downvoted.
Comment if you think you can add something, not just because you saw it.11 -
if there's one thing I love more than coding, it's using metaphors to explain to other people why they're not "getting it". like the all famous contractor:
"yeah I know you need 5 months to build my house, but can you do it in 2. Also, I'm going to pay half. Oh, and when the house is done, could you also add a cellar?"
any more good metaphors out there?4 -

Boss: Can you add these links as a redirect 301 to this link.
Me: Ok, I'm not the developer for that domain but I guess I can do it. Let's try to update apache htaccess for that domain through my account.
(After a swift ssh connection to the server to check out that domain.)
Me: Er...boss, we don't own that domain. We cannot redirect it's links to our other domains.
Boss: Why? What do you mean?!
Me: well if we don't own that domain, than it is not on our server and we cannot update it's server config files. So we cannot redirect that domain to our other domains.
Boss: Are you sure?
It went on like this for a while. I had a laugh break after.1 -
Routing and analysis of http behaviour with wireshark makes so much joy and fun.
Wanna get even more fun?
Add DNS. Add loadbalancers.
Loadbalancers?
Hell Yeah!
VLAN X has it's own router and domain overrides to give a service a seperate IP pointing to a loadbalancer inside the VLAN X.
loadbalancer in VLAN X then has additional routes to point to loadbalancer in VLAN Y.
Which might then point to the service in VLAN Y or... point to another loadbalancer in VLAN Z.
I'm always amazed what a human mind can create....
If you think that's insane, then add HTTP keepalive and persistent connections.
I just love people who have no idea what they're doing but are able to create a clusterfuck of brainfuck....11 -
For those struggling with imposter syndrome, keep a record of your progress.
Break it down into
* used
* learning
* dont need a manual or cheat sheet
* use every day
You can also break it down per project:.
"Project xyz (python: 2 years)"
"Project ijk (js:6 months)".
Etc.
Critically, keep these in something physical, like a notebook or whatever you use *regularly and frequently* to keep notes. That's important because you should be glancing over your progress as a remainder.
Each time you want to add a new line, rewrite your existing progress on a new page, before adding the new line.
So as you flip through the pages you get a large and larger chronological list of your progress, and improvement, and experience.
Add a date to the title for each and a brief note about something that you did or happened on that day or week.
You wont second guess yourself so much once you can see how far you came.
Like at one time I was actually competent at js! (Before I stopped the flash cards anyway).3 -
Raging here, overheating really. One spends thousands on technology that is promoted with the catch phrase "it just works", yet here I am, after updating my fancy new emoji maker (iphone x) to 11.2 and then attempt to carry on working by compiling my code to test some new features. And...
oh, whats this xCode? You have a problem? You can't locate something? You can't locate iOS 11.2 (15C114)... sorry and you think that this "May not" be supported in current version of Xcode?
Let me get this straight you advanced piece of technological wizardy, you know you are missing something, you in fact know what it is, you can actually TELL me what is missing and yet, still, in 2017, you can't go FETCH it?????
Really? All you can do is sit, with that stupid look on your face, and watch the paint dry? Your stuck? That's it?
I hate you for the false pretense of advanced capability. and for your lack of a consistent dark theme so my eyes stop bleeding when reading your "I don't know what to do" messages...
By the way, maybe you can stop randomly crashing, or pinwheeling, I get that your bored as a machine designed to crunch numbers/data/code all day long and that for fun you feel you have to add some color to your subsitance. But stop it. Do what I'm told you can do, "JUST WORK" for once without me having to drag you forward kicking and screaming.
K. that feels better. Now for some whiskey.5 -
When your manager who claims to be a Wordpress "developer" says to you oh my God, why are you using notepad to write the page when there is an editor?
My response, because I am a developer. I write code and I can write better HTML than any editor can. I then said I do add editors for my projects where required, not for me, but for the end users that cannot write HTML. He walked away 😂15 -
Working with Android DatePicker is such a pain in the ass.
You want to have your DatePicker appearing as a SpinnerView? Well, easy!
If you're under API 21, you can use the following method 'setSpinnerViewShown()'. If you're between API 21 and API 23 you need to add some style configuration. And if you're above of API 23 you can't use both of the methods above, you need to create a custom xml with the attribute "datePickerMode" (no, datePickerMode can't be set programmatically, it would be too easy to guess).
If you want to add a listener to it, you think it might be a method called 'setDateChangeListener' or something like this? Well no! You must use the 'init(year, month, day, Listener)' method, logic!
If you think you're finished with this bullshit, of course not. Their is a known bug on API 21 that you must take into account (but this bug isn't fixed, no, it's just documented somewhere on google forums).
I don't know the team that designed the DatePicker for Android, but it might a team of champanzee that randomly changed their minds to the phases of the moon!3 -

Facebook API...
Facebooks "graph" or API's in general fucking stink donkey dick.
Their implementation of oAuth is horrible.. 3 different tokens, which can be either short or long lived, for fetching a facebook page feed (the clients own facebook page)

Since we are using the same password on all our servers (both QA and Production environment) my team somehow decided that it would be easier to copy the private SSH key for to ALL servers and add the public key to the authorized.keys file.
This way we SSH without password and easily add it to new servers, it also means that anyone who gets into one server can get to all of them.
I wasn't a fan of the same password on all servers, but this private key copying is just going against basic security principles.
Do they want rogue connections? Because that's how you get them.1 -
By default, GitHub uses the term "master" for the primary version of a source code repository. Developers make copies of the "master" on their computers into which they add their own code, and then merge the changes back into the "master" repo.
"On Oct. 1, 2020, any new repositories you create will use main as the default branch, instead of master," the company said.
Oh my god. Can you people just fuck off with your arbitrary terminology changes?!?!?42 -

Not this:

Note the presence or lack of a comma after the last field. In this way, when you add a new field, you only have one line change in version control, because otherwise you'd have to add that no-longer-last comma and thus make two line changes. Not to mention you can forget to add it and spend some time figuring out what is wrong.30 -

That moment when code reuse makes you reuse reused code and you actually reuse a BUG.
You decide to go for code reusing when your boss asks: "Can you add an edit popup besides that 'add customer' popup button?". You do some little tweaks to the "new customer" code and it allows that to save over an existing entry, cool.
However, after a lot of time spent on reviewing the resulting PR, turns out there was a dormant bug on the code you reused, and it woke up with its new use.
That code was a bad copy-pasta from another, bigger form, which included a whole bunch of optional fields. As it was only used to save new entries, those now missing fields were simply being saved as empty. But as you reused that to save existing entries, you were now cleaning up all those optional fields without noticing.1 -

Guess what, no one wants to talk to me anymore.12

3. Do not re-invent the wheel. Explore third parties and libraries thoroughly. Use them as much as you can.
4. If you stuck at a problem for more than 2-3 hours: post on stackoverflow
5. Plan, create deadlines, and focus as if an executive chose you.

Long time lurker, I now have something to show you and it's something I've proudly made!
I've been working on OctoLenses lately, a Chrome extension allowing you to filter your PR and issues on Github. I find it really useful on a daily basis; and you might too
It can be used to:
- Monitor the PRs that need a review (or that have been reviewed successfuly)
- Find issues on open-source projects you like that you could take on
- Anything you can express with a Github search basically
It's good enough that I feel like I can share it with you, and I'd really like if you could take some of your time to give me a bit of feedback.
What do you like?
What you don't?
Which feature should I add?
Anything constructive basically :)
Thank you (and sorry for the self-promotion)!1 -
I'm told that a worker can't clock into work on his phone because he does something different from his fellow employees. So I go to him to ask hey what do you need in order to clock in.
"Oh well I do something different from everyone"
Yeah I know I'm trying to get it so you can clock in on the phone as well what do you clock into.
"Well the other guys can clock into things on the phone you should ask them if you want to know how to clock into on the phone. I do different jobs then them"
Yes I know, what do you different so I can add it to the phone clock in app?
"What I do isn't on the phone you can't clock into it on there you have to clock into it here."
Would it be unprofessional to strangle him?3 -
New job: Asked my manager if i can add documentation for the code/project.
Manager: it's completely useless to use hours on documentation. If you don't understand any thing just ask around. It saves time. Just use descriptive variables and method names.
Me: :|7 -
Just a thought.
If your project has good coverage with tests, it should be possible to develop an algorithm that recreates your production code entirely from tests.
Just look at IntelliJ - its autosuggestions on missing properties/methods are 99% times correct - I only need to hit that ENTER button. Add some AI to recreate some algorithms and there you go - you can use your tests as both: code specs and a part of QA.
Any takers for the next AI project? :)4 -
Can someone help me settle an argument with a coworker?
So let's say there is a REST interface that returns a PDF representation of an resource...but it requires the authorization header in order to authorize that you have access to the document in question.
And let's say there is a link on the page that redirects to this endpoint to serve up the document. He thinks you can add a header to the HTTP request that goes out when you click on the link (a regular old anchor tag) with onclick without making an xhr call.
I told him that you would have to use an xhr call to add headers, and that even then you would receive a byte stream back, which without using a blob and an object url or a data uri you wouldn't be able to display it in a new tab or start a download.
Regardless he went on to tell me I was wrong. The next day he said he had done it. I asked him to show me, and he said "oh it's at home", and then proceeded to ridicule me in front of my architect. He always pulls this one up's man ship bullshit and I hate it. And I am pretty sure he's wrong.10 -
Winforms.
Thanks to my school I was introduced to this shit and by George is it some of the most unintuitive crap I've ever used.
The drag and drop shit should be fine, but oh if ever you doubleclick on something it will add a [name]_click method, and if you think you can just remove it fuck you!
Then there's the fact that splitting stuff up is unintuitive as hell as well. That is, you can't. You can define areas you can show and hide, and then you can drag stuff into them. That should be fine but everything is still in the same page (and if you have stuff overlapping then you better not move it with your mouse because then it will belong to another of those things). Contrast that with the more ~~~complicated~~~ and ~~~not what we learn~~~ WPF which has frames where the content can be define in different files.
Oh but if thatt wasn't enough, the autogenerated code is horrible as hell.
I died a little inside when I learned someone decided to take it to the web as well D:

Here is another Tester story for you!
Tester: We have a problem with the application and it says that we cant process the queue to store the objects in the database.
Me: Can we reproduce it easily?
Tester: Yes..
Me: Ok, I'll add some debug for you so that you can see the error and the worker status more easily.
Tester: Great!
<10 minutes later>
After adding the debug output and installing it on his test cluster this happens...
Me: The debug version is installed.
Tester: Ok, great!
Me: How fast does it take to reproduce?
Tester: Well... It happened this morning at 9
Me: Ok..? But are you able to reproduce the issue at all?
Tester: No... i don't think so...1 -
I had to use XSS (cross site scripting) and tag injection to change one tiny CSS property on a bug tracker site where I have no actual file access and can only add custom footer text. Why not just give me file access, or at least some way to customise the CSS, you stupid thing!2
-
I love opening emails in the morning and seeing “hey in 5h we will have a presentation about our project can you add 2 more features before that?”3

Those of you who run Linux *exclusively*... What are you doing in the OS that makes it a big deal for you?
Personally, I spend the bulk of my time in *apps*---editor, IDE, browser, messaging, calendar, etc. OK, a little time in command line, but minutes a day, if I add it up. And I can get Bash anywhere.
Now, you could argue that, if I spend most of my time in apps, then I should have a minimalist OS. Fair comment. Is that all it is?
But, I feel OS is quite an unimportant part of my day. App launcher for much of it.15 -
Week 1 : Be told website needs to be responsive for all main mobile devices. Code and complete.
Week 2 : Go back to previous work
Week 3 : Oh the MD is doing a demo this week (which was arranged in week 1) of the responsive site, can you change almost everything and add all this new functionality before Tuesday.... -
- a split keyboard with a touchpad in the middle that will let you control all gestures on a computer
- a set of desk/monitors that adjusts perfectly for ergo for anyone
- a vertical laptop dock that is modular so you can add extra memory/video processing power and only using your laptop as a CPU/secondary graphics card
- a set of kitchenware and plates that would be so easy to clean and would never get stained
-an insect home alarm system that tells you where the fucking insect is so it doesn't take you by surprise/you can call someone to remove it
- a clothing brand that has a buy one gift one operation mechanic, where you buy a shirt and an article is donated to a local charity
- a restaurant
- a simple, yet robust database option that walks users through creating good databases that is super user friendly
- an app that takes tattoo designs in any format, converts them, allows for editing, and then can hook up to a special printer that gives you the transfer you will use on the client22 -
After coaching for Django Girls organization and GirlScript Summer of Code, it can be known I clearly have a thing for Django. So I decided to make a new Portfolio from scratch and this time, using Django (seemed a good idea as I wanted to migrate my blogs from Medium to the portfolio).
So, I made the project, got a domain name and hosted it on Heroku. Then it struck me to make my portfolio open source so everyone can use it to make their own! I am looking forward to add a lot new features and improve the existing ones. Here’s a link to it: https://github.com/hmangukia/...
Do create an issue if you feel something needs to be improved!
Projects, Blogs and Social Media handles can be added from the admin panel. If the user does not have coding background, the installation process might be tough. That is why, I am looking forward to add the Sign Up functionality so that the user does not have to go through all that hassle of installing and hosting the project.
If you are wishing to use this to make your Portfolio, please go through the installation steps in readme.md. I would be more than happy to help you install and host on Heroku if you get stuck :)5 -
Why do people who cannot write specs still write specs? There are guys who just cannot produce anything human readable.
- Don't list 50 things in the same sentence separated with semicolon. Don't you have list bullets in your Word?? Or table, anyone??
- Now that you managed to add a table, don't write a novel into the cells. Especially now that you have decided to use 30pt font size and 3cm wide columns.
- If it's not an equation, don't use parenthesis. Why? Since they (and this is just my opinion (someone else might think otherwise)) are a little bit (or a lot, depending on the reader(s)) annoying (or otherwise irritating) since they (the parenthesis) tend to make the text (of any kind) very difficult (hard) to read especially (there can be other reasons) when you (or someone else in the company) have decided to write reaaaally long and complex sentences which add no information but make the reader go back and forth of the text trying (and sometimes not succeeding) to make any sense out of it.
- Always remember to use cross-reference number like [1] but don't tell what it is referring to. Special bonus will be awarded, if the link is broken!
- Save space and time by not explaining things that you can just refer to. Just add vague "read from [1], [2] and [3] for info about this." And then expect the reader to go through thousands of pages of boring jargon.
And oh yeah, please ask comments in the review session and then ignore all of them, since "well technically all the information was in the spec". You just need to be Sherloc Holmes to connect the dots.2 -
Very senior colleague: *hits a problem that is a minor inconvenience*
VSC: "I have to restart this task, the two weeks I put into it must be deleted!"
Me: "You forgot to do *this* here, add this 1 line and it's ok."
VSC: *An hour of rumbling about the codebase*
VSC: *adds my fix*
VSC: "Ok, it works now, you can review again"
Me: *cries inside*2 -
The people that religiously put "missing docstring" on code reviews... Like, I get why but... Who hurt you? Especially in typed languages, where there's a function called "can compute stuff" with a foo type, and I add a docstring that's "whether we can compute stuff for the given foo"...5
-
I'm trying out Atom coming from VSCode and Android Studio.
Where's the integrated terminal?
You have to download an extension.
How do you add breakpoints?
There's an extension for that
How can I quicky find/go to files?
...extension
But it has Git integration! Phewww that's a relief, I have now idea how to write `git add .` without a terminal13 -
PM - "can you add this word to the application? You have 4 weeks"
PM - "can you strip the database, refill it with new fields and implement it so that it works across a wide range of companies? You have 1 hour" -
User A: We need to do some check on our data. So you need to add in a new function for this, we can't use your system otherwise.
Me: Ok then.
Spends 2 days or so to get it working
Me: So this is the function we'll add. Can you confirm that its ok?
User A: Ohh...but now I'm not too sure about this. Let me confirm with my team lead on this.
User A: I just checked. Good news,we don't really need that function now. I think we can use it with the current one anyway haha. And I just confirmed this so no worries.
So I just wasted my time then. Great.3 -
How far off can you implement a feature?
Task: Update add one feature to this endpoint and add test(s) for the new feature

Me: Could you please provide us with api key so we can add this feature?
Client's IT person: You don't need the api key to develop, their site has documentation so it's not a blocker. I will get you the api key when we are ready to go live.
Me: ... -
Surely you can add the tracking number to the URL in the text message, rather than having to go back to the message to copy and paste the tracking number into your website. Royal Mail.

As someone who didn´t work with dependency injection in almost all projects before:
I legitimately sat here for half an hour and asked myself how to fucking access a new database context...

You can´t just add that to the constructor.
Dependency Inection:
Yes you can!2 -
Which phones do you recommend?
Which have given you the fewest problems?
I want something with custom rom support so i can add my own problems (duh) and to make it prettier. Apart from that, the only other deal breakers are a lack of wireless charging (I have children who break everything) and an awful screen. I'm not really picky about anything else, but I do want it pretty.
Anyone have a phone like this that they actually like?17 -
You can now group projects in Android Studio and even add icon to them.

Why do some developers cut corners and add 20 extra fields just in case the customer wants to add extra data? What happens when the customer needs 21 fields. Just spend slightly more time and implement a custom field system that can extend to any amount of data it's not that difficult and you won't have to add a new field every time a customer needs more then you expected.3

Just gonna leave this here because I am too lazy to write a proper article for my website:
If anyone is trying to create a Vue.js website with Node.js backend do NOT use express-vue, it is unnecessarily complicated and broken. Instead use this method I found.
You will need:
- IntelliJ IDEA / WebStorm / other IDE supporting multiple modules per project and tasks
- Nodejs and npm
- vue-cli
Step by step:
1. Create new empty project
2. Add your frontend module using vue-cli generator
3. Add your backend module using Express generator
4. Run npm build in your frontend module once
5. Move or remove public folder in your backend module
6. Create a symlink from your backend module root called public pointing to dist folder in your frontend module root
7. Make sure to add "Run npm build" from frontend module to your "bin/www" task (default task for Express module)
8. Enjoy developing your REST API in Node/Express and your frontend in Vue.js with single-file components and it being served by the same server that is providing the backend.
(Since they are separate modules and you are not mixing webpack and Node/Express you can add ts-loader, stylus-loader, pug-loader or any other loaders without screwing anything up)
For deployment you just need to copy the contents of dist into public on the server. (and not upload the symlink)6 -
HR is a dead role in modern tech recruitment. You can pay programmers to do tech interviews and the rest is already automatable. Nobody needs large swarms of cubicle fucks sitting around all day poring through resumes they don’t understand pretending to add value.
Change my mind.10 -
Designer: hey, can you add this thing
Me: Sure, but that's probably a day's worth of work
Designer: oh, I thought it was just a line of code

Me(in head): How am i ever going to finish my sprint for next Friday...8 -
You win Linux. That was the last straw. I will never install ANY linux distribution ever again.
Setup a simple FTP server. What can possibly go wrong ?
Ok now I want it to point to /media/ftp
Easy, right ?
Just add local_root=/media/ftp
Weeeeellll nop.
Not working. Completly ingnoring this setting, all users log to home directory.
#chroot_local_user=YES
tried, no effect.
I'm wiping this server and installing windows server there.
Too bad, the process started very well, the machine is fully confiogured, ready to go, DNS working every thing working. Except this shitty FTP.
So FUCK YOU linux wioth config files, WELCOME windows with nice GUI where I can just SELECT the default ftp folder29 -
Me: Alright, new week, back from vacation fully rested and focused, lets get productive.
Apple(safari 10.3 update): Fuck you.
Basically the change log was:
*fixed critical security bug.
*added more bugs to fix later.
Well fuck you too safari... You disgust me.
The least the fucking imbeciles, or monkeys, behind safari can do is add a fucking css prefix. For fucks sake. -
So apparently vmware has a blacklist of video drivers... if you want to ignore the blacklist you legit have to manually add a line to the .vmx file...
I understand it's not a massive problem everyone will have but at least add a GUI option...
Fuck me, if your going to have something that can potentially render your product useless to some users out of the box, at least give them a simple way, even if it is just under he VM's advanced options -.-1 -

In case the kiddos ask if you can hack Facebook or whatever, here's a nice little JS code. Copy paste it into the URL, hit enter and select + edit whatever you like!
javascript: document.body.contentEditable = 'true'; document.designMode = 'on'; void 0
ps: in chrome the 'javascript:' at the beginning gets removed so you'll have to manually add it. not sure about other browsers3 -
Non tech hobbies that helped me with developement:
Lego technic/mecano/knex were a great way to learn about abstraction, you build modules that you can reuse somewhere else.
Cooking is similar, you notice useful patterns that you can reproduce. E.g. roux, which is butter and flour is used for a lot of sauces, then add milk and you get béchamel, which is again used for a lot of sauces.
Coffee brewing helps because I can't focus if I don't get coffee.2 -
PM: Page load times are up. It might be your API blocking requests.
Me: Possible, though most of my load testing was performed against a random sample of requests at nearly 5 times the expected average per minute rate. I can add some logs but I think this is a red herring theory.
PM: Yes add logs, and New Relic and get it released ASAP.
Me: To confirm, you want me to make a bunch of diagnostic changes to a mission-critical API the day before Holiday break...
I felt like that guy from the Apollo 13 team warning Gene Kranz that the LEM was not built for this and I can make no guarantees... Released an hour before we went home for the weekend.undefined finest hour friday releases fud hang on to your butts on call empathy failure is not an option -
the two code review personality types
review activity:
- dev A: requests code review, sets dev B and dev c (myself) as reviewers
- dev C comments: this review is marked with a complexity > 9000, touches > 20 files and has zero comments... also there's a lot of refactoring going on, making it hard for me to tell what the actual relevant changes are. can you please add more comments to this review?
- dev B (10 mins later): approved review6 -
Just discovered Roccat Power-Grid!
It's so awesome and useful!
Mapped all Makros I use while programming to it.
I also have some CPU/RAM info and media buttons (play/pause/next/...).
You can even add website buttons. For example for Github or Stackoverflow!
Not sure if it's faster to use it but it's way cooler :)
Check it out!
Just search for it on Google/DuckDuckGo. -

I'm considering to build a powerful, small/semi-portable mini-ITX PC. Just small box you can easily travel with, kinda like a laptop but a lot cheaper and without a screen, keyboard and battery - I can't really work on laptops anyway (ergonomics!). Stuffed with something like a 4400G when Renoir (mainstream Zen2) comes out, so lots of processing power. Add 32GB+ RAM and one or two SSDs.
I'd say the reason is that I might work from abroad (remotely) next year, but honestly, it just gives me an excuse to break my piggy bank!
What do you think?11 -
"Let's just add a logging system to our dependency"
No. You fucking idiot. DON'T INCLUDE A CUSTOM LOGGING SYSTEM INTO A DEPENDENCY FOR IMAGE MANIPULATION. I DON'T WANT YOUR FUCKING BULLSHIT LOGGING WHEN I'M FUCKING HANDLING IT MYSELF FOR MY ALREADY EXISTING SOFTWARE!! HOW DUMB CAN YOU STUPID MOTHERFUCKER BE TO TELL ME TO JUST "IGNORE" THE MESSAGES IN THE CONSOLE WHEN I'M BUILDING A FUCKING CLI BASED SOFTWARE??!!1 -
Are vi/vim users vegans of dev community? Can we also add emacs users to the list? Bunch of degenerates if you ask me... 🤗37

I dont understand the Log4j vulnerability.
Isnt the ability to execute code a feature they added so that you can add dynamic data to the logs?
If it is a feature then isnt it written in the documentation?
Is the problem that a lot of companies forgot to sanitize the input before logging it?23 -
Client: Can you add the link to our Pinterest to our website?
Me, internally: Did you just ask a webdeveloper if he could add a link? No wonder you're too dumb to add the link to your Pinterest via your CMS, where the inputfield is waiting for input.
Me, externally: Yes. Could you send me the link please?2 -
Have you ever hit a wall? Like you know what you want to do, you know how to do it but it will not work for absolutely no reason you can see? I've spent the better part of 5 hours trying to add an image upload to my node app and have nothing to show for it. I've tried multiple packages to no avail. I've deleted everything and started over so many times I've lost track. The only thing I can think of doing now is bashing my head off the keyboard and hope that spews out some magical code that will fix my problem.5

Me : Hey, can we add datas in the database so we can test every single possible situation with it ?
Worker : Nah, it's better that you don't touch it, lemme do it.

Worker : Hey I've added data to test our code.
Me : *fetch data, see only three similar objects that fits in only a situation, I can't test the others" Thank you, that was really helpful.1 -
In Russian you can put words into sentences in almost any order you wish. This opens many possibilities for poets and for you to add additional meanings.9

When a client said, ofc you can add this feature all you have to do is to press two buttons!! Oh really??? Come and press them your self if it's too easy for you and I will pay you!!! You little piece of shit!!!!

Hi devranters,
I'm currently in the process of developing a new service with which websites can be advertised for free.
The idea is you get to advertise your website for free on the network and in return you add advertisements from other websites on the network to your site.
More detailed information can be found at https://handelads.com
How many of you as developers would be interested in such a service?
I would appreciate any feedback you all might have.10 -
QA/stakeholder person: can you add the following links to the footer?
devs: sure. easy.
devs: oh wait, 3 of those links are 404. Are you planning to create those pages? or were those urls just a suggestion?
<crickets>
devs: ok well for now we'll leave those out.
stakeholder (a day later): hey these 3 links are still not in the footer!
devs: yeah we asked about that yesterday.
boss: the links are there now
devs (quietly): fuck you. -

We have all experienced inheriting a project and crying because of quality of coding. Somehow the project works but you can't explain how.
I guess I will not blame the previous developer. I guess in most cases it's the teacher who teaches that horrible method of coding.
I may be a self taught developer. But I can gladly say that I know how to code. However I can't say the same about my professor. Who makes you add percentage based margins and paddings (CSS) And make a fluid layout calling it responsive.
Fuck you Professor.1 -
I was developing a project for the software engineering course. We we're building a sort of mips instructions simulator that would show you the path the signal takes while it's traveling in the CPU.
So after almost finishing everything, the professor asks us to add a voice over feature that would tell you what is happening while you go through the animation.
You can only understand this if you see it. It's very funny and stupid.
The website is http://mipssimulator.com
Make sure sound is on.
Edit: the site is kinda glitchy on mobile so try loading it on a computer for better results.5 -
Pm: can you put a simple editable checklist here ?

I'm currently working on updating our SAP Hybris code base (unreleased) to the latest hybris version ... god, there are so many bugs I could scream. SAP, how can you release such a saftware*, or wait the actual question is, SAP aren't you ashamed for that peace of shit you sell for 1M per licences!?!?!
Allegedly SAP has >100 people sitting there working on hybris. Every new version I wonder the same, when do the finally fix the bugs, improve performance, update the 10year old ant version, migrate to maven, remove the bloat ...
what they actually do is just add bugs and more bloat "§$%&/()=)(?/&%(&
* german "saft" means juice. A "saftladen" is a shitty company, "saftware" ... you get it right ;-)2 -
Not really random, still Dev related but still!
I'm working on a few large games at the moment, I have a habit of trying to build massive world's that feel lived in and organic, obviously I never finish them because I obsessed over the tiniest things.
So to try and help I thought of an idea, a detective game where you investigate 1 single murder and have one house you can look through, but you have to piece together what happened organically from a clue and false path filled household.
Just want some other opinions on it and whether it sounds alright, or if you have something to add to it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯6 -

Client: Can you put all the add on products we sell into the MDSL (Master Daily Sales Log)
Why aren't you adding them to the new console system? It allows you to add them and tracks all actions on the sale.
Client: The Health Agents don't know how to do that, and I think the manger hasn't added them into the system....yup he didn't add them.
Me: So how are you tracking the addon products you are selling?
Client: I don't know. Can you just add them to the MDSL.
Me: I wrote the console system to replace the MDSL, why are you using the spaghetti code system I wrote 8 years ago?
Client: They like it better because of this one report they use.
Me: I rewrote that report for the new system and it even gives more info.
Client: But the owner doesn't trust it, because it shows conversions and sales instead of just sales.

Once again lost source of retoorscript. Wasn't that mad about it, there was some stuff that could've been better anyway.
I wrote a whole new interpreter in 48 hours or so.
It supports user defined functions and native functions that you can add to the VM yourself.
I did spend extra effort to make it faster than python. Who says python is slow never wrote a language.
It has garbage collection and it doesn't contain leaks.
Sad thing is that I have to write the string manipulation functions again. That's a lot of effort.
In the screenshot, obj is not existing, this is how you declare vars, just using it. Works directly as an object. It does keep all his properties if I would assign a value later to obj. Numbers can be property names for some reason.
It would be possible to write a webapplication with it. This requires a decent stdlib. A lot of work.
Other stuff that I'll still have to add:
- loops
- arrays
- if / else
The goal is to make the most easy understandable and easy to extend interpreter ever.
You can just do VM_register(vm, "name", ptr_to_your_function) to add any methods.
Ideas are very welcome17 -
@DevRantDevs could you please add the feature that i can view an image dorectly from the thread wothout loading the rant?
Is maybe someone else interested in this feature?6 -
Convo b/w me & lecturer.
Me: Is one line that explains exactly what it does okay?
Him: No.
Me: Okay I'll make it a paragraph explaining it a lot more in detail...Is that okay?
Him: Nope, you need to elaborate for laymen.
I don't know what more I can add. Sick of useless documentation. Any one else have this problem?1 -
When you've been very clear every time about what your app can and can't do. Boss misspeaks once and now you have to add a whole other feature.1

Debugging an issue last week that involved a duplicate class. Took about 10 mins of debugging (console.log) to realize the function wasn't being called.
Me to the person I was helping: we should comment that this is deprecated, can you add it?
Today while reading over the (unchanged) code, I see a comment block above the class **that I wrote awhile ago** which says exactly that...1 -
So I noticed quite a lot of South Africans on DevRant and I thought to myself that it might be great to meet a couple of you! If you're keen, join the Unofficial "DevRant Meets" server on Discord. If you think your country can also benefit from a channel, just pop me a message on Discord, then I'll just add a channel for your country :) https://discord.gg/P6kafcj3

Nothing like client requesting "Hey can you add a virus scan for every goddamn file in the pipeline ? (We don't know what antivirus software you can use, neither do we know what are the consequences of this virus scan failing. We also don't know why a system admin is not doing this server wide instead of a software Dev doing it for this specific individual component. Heck we don't even know why do we need the virus scan in the first place) You might need to think 'outside the box'. Let's hope this is done by 12th Jan. Regards" on a Friday goddamn night
They probably even expect me to write my own antivirus software instead of paying for one
Why is industry like this ? Is there really any polite way to deny this ?15 -
Okay so I need someone to tell me if this is what its like programming for a Superior at an actual job. Background information, I go to a highschool where Im learning IT fundementals, Programming, and networking.
So I'm designing the JavaScript Project for my class. Its a simple progress bar that loads from 1% to 100% when you press the button.
So then my teacher is like "can you add a number showing what percent its at?" and I was like "yeah sure" so I did it, and today I showed him and he was like "Can you make it to where the percent is in the center so you can see what its at the whole time" so I obviously replied
yes because Im the number 1 Javascript programmer in the class and now I have to make that adjustment but it clicked when I opened devRant that this is what a lot of professional programmers go through!..5 -
Why do these article sites of news channels have a shitload of adds in it , so much that you can barely even see the article ... and even worse , some of them add random pop up modals in between of their article.
Like I am reading about salt or sugar which is better to add in curd and suddenly I see a f*cking deaf person trying on a hearing aid and smiling like some girl in sanitary pad advertisement after she aced in her exam because she used the extra wide pad.
And some of those website feel so delusionally confident about their articles that they decide to add a "Sign up to Read full article" thing in it ...
I was just trying to read "top 10 places to visit this monsoon in [city name]".2 -
This shitty indian development companies should fucking go to hell. So there is a client who approaches me so that I can add new integrations to their web store/platform but the guys who development it wouldn't let me access the backend in any way!!!
Guess I am so mad that I can't even rant well.
But fuck you cheap indian development companies!!!!!!7 -
Me talking to my prof about the app that i have to make to pass the oop course early.
Prof> So can you add some kind of a random algorithm to that? You can use float for tha....
Me> NOOOOOOOO
Prof> ...
Me> ...
Me> I wont use floats, i will recreate fractions if i have to.
Prof> Why? There must be a way to compare floats easly...
Me> Nope. If you hate somebody, make them do somthing using floats. I will do that my way.
Prof> okay...
I nearly got myself in bigger shit that im now. I still have to make the app in C++ (Big OOF) but at least i wont have to dick around float arythmetric.
I wish i could do it in C#... I dont like that memory managment...10 -
I started with a UI automation scripting language AutoIt (back in ~2005, I was 12 years old then). You can call methods like MouseMove etc. You can also copy files, send keystrokes and bunch of other stuff. (https://autoitscript.com/site/...)
Created an executable using that which will have an icon of a folder named 'Games', which, once opened, will copy itself to system32, add registry entries for launching itself on subsequent startups, would replace windows startup sound file by my favourite song, look for attached USB devices and copy itself to those, if found.
Soon, all my friends' PCs were singing my favourite song on boot.1 -

Interesting project lined up for today!
I'll be installing a security system, one camera connected to a DVR pointing at a front door triggering a buzzer and sending a video feed to a monitor in a ground floor room at the other side of the house.
But it's my dads house so I'm going to have fun with it and install a wired Cat5 network an Isolated offline router and build in some "smart home" features from scratch, all running on a Local Area Network.
I've built a private home server package for media and storage using Apache and I want to add as many features to the house as I can, maybe even install an extra camera pointing towards the sky (every home should have a sky cam lol).
I can take my time with this project over the next several weeks and I was wondering what would you add to this project?10 -
This is my frontend tip of the day.
If you have a frontend that consumes an external API:
1) Retrieve the json responses from devtools
2) Save them in your project as json files (trim the data a bit if it's too long)
3) When starting your app with a special env var like MOCK_DATA, make your app mock the data and use your saved json data instead.
You can associate each response with an url regex.
The package fetch-mock mocks fetch really well, it lets through the urls that don't match anything.
This way you can incrementally add responses.
And voila, you have a mode where you have near instant page loads to test things manually, and you also have mocked data ready for testing eg, cypress. -
Last day before vacation, 6 hours left and all my PBIs are merged to main so I asked the project manager if I could add a Vacation PBI to our backlog :)
But he said: no Im sure we can create some tasks for you! -

Today I learned you can basically just copy and paste python code into a PHP script, add some brackets and change some functions and it will just work.
I guess this saves me having to rewrite this very dodgy pseudo-random number generator I have to make!1 -
today I forgot to check the balance of my prepaid sim card. (it was < 2€)
I just received a notification from google that payment for devrant++ has been rejected.
F*uck!
I recharge my sim with paypal.

"add a different payment method"
fine.
I choose to add paypal....

"your paypal account can be added because it's blocked; contact paypal."
wtf? I used paypal 10mins ago.

Was testing an editor for writing technical documentation. Asked their support:
Hey ___, am I right in thinking you can't paste images directly from clipboard into a document?
Couple of hours later:
Hi ___, yes, you can add images by uploading them: <url>
The URL they provide has no examples of being able to paste images directly from the clipboard. provides Trying to figure out if this is yes-but-no or no-but-yes. -
Alert fatigue is likely one of the biggest problems.
When you add in unactionable or false-positive alerts to the mix it can drive a dev team insane.

Hey guys, I want to switch from Windows dev to Linux dev but I am coding game using C# and Monogame's framework. I'd like to know if you think it is possible and viable to code big game projects with vscode ? And is there plugins inside vscode which can add automaticly the framework's needs and create breakpoint step by step for debugging like Visual studio do ?
Thanks for your help ! :)15 -
Hey, javascript people, got a question.
Is there any way to disable sites binding the mousewheel (scrolling) event ? Like for example rebinding it to scroll down at the end of window load ? (tamper/greasemonkey)
I am getting furious with all these sites where they will block the whole site to make you agree cookies & gdpr shit.
Removing the foreground/blocking element is sometimes enough but often the remaining site can't be scrolled.
EDIT: Found out you can add links of script that does this to AdBlock:) For example movieinsider has it's "gdpr, cookies & shit" script at the top of head element. Add it and voilá.6 -
Ok, so you can add another CPU for more redundancy and security. Safety PLC's do that. But the one which takes the cake is definitely Pilz. The ended up using three of the same CPU in one controller. Does that at that point really increase failsafe performance or is it just overengineering for getting a certification?6

Hey. Can you add excel97 vba capabilities to new office 365 ? I have a 20years old xls file with very complicated macros that i need to run.
And btw, how come a software looses capabilities over time.9 -
I just look at a layout like this and see a relational database. Because minus random markers, there is a defined set of relationships some of which can be inferred or taken from OTHER data like.
"Joe travels at 8 am +/- 1 hr 99% of the time, every day of the work week for the last 52 weeks, likely joe is commuting to this location"
or you could just add a schedule table and one item could be marked commute vs a log table of data that is actually happening.
With everything else I see the same things.
I also see a possibility for graph edges and the likej to get out of control really quickly when you start adding event data into it.
so what is the use of graph and whats its really offering ?
any data worthwhile is likely going to have some kind of structure, even if you add ad hoc fields that don't exist, after enough additions those fields should be standardized !28 -
Add-on signing is censorship in disguise.
Imagine Google could remotely delete YouTube videos you downloaded, to "keep you safe" from the "bad content". Well, Google and Mozilla can remotely disable extensions you installed using their pre-installed trojan horse called "add-on signing".
Always remember, whenever a corporation cites "for your protection", consider it synonymous with "so we can control you more".12 -
Just realised - even if I are usually on collision course with central IT they save me a whole lot of "can you help me with this?" by not letting us do anything ourselves. Printers, new software, settings, startpages, drivers, browsers etc. Everything has to go through them.
Add the fact that the last Windows machine I've had was a P4 when XP came out and I'm in the clear for a whole lot of helping out. "Sorry but I only use Debian and OS X, but you could ask our IT people" :) -
I recently tried to prototype a few pages for a new webapp I'm working on and--because I'm a masochist--decided to try something other than Bootstrap. It seems that no one can support backward compatibility and even Foundation's examples don't work with their current version.
Folks, add new stuff all you want, but don't break what works. If you do, at least update your damn example code! -
(I'm not completely sure of what I'm saying here, so don't take this too seriously)
Settling on a language to write the api for ranterix is hard.
I'm finding a lot of things about elixir to be insanely good for a stable api.
But I'm having a lot of gripes with the most important elixir web framework, phoenix.
Take a look at this piece of code from the phoenix docs:
defmodule Hello.Repo.Migrations.CreateUsers do
use Ecto.Migration
def change do
create table(:users) do
add :name, :string
add :email, :string add :bio, :string
add :number_of_pets, :integer
timestamps()
end
end
end
Jesus christ, I hate this shit.
Wtf are create, add and timestamps. Add is somehow valid inside the create, how the fuck is that considered good code? What happens if you call timestamps twice? It's all obscure "trust me, it works" code.
It appears to be written by a child.
js may have a million problems. But one thing I like about CJS (require) or ESM (import) is that there's nothing unexplained. You know where the fuck most things come from.
You default export an eatShit() function on one file and import it from another, and what do you get?
The goddamn actual eatShit function.
require is a function the same way toString is a function and it returns whatever the fuck you had exported in the target file.
Meanwhile some dynamic langs are like "oh, I'll just export only some lang construct that i expect you to specify and put that shit in fucking global of the importing file".
Js is about the fucking freedom. It won't decide for you what things will files export, you can export whatever the fuck you want, strings, functions, classes, objects or even nothing at all, thanks to module.exports object or export statement.
And in js, you can spy on anything external, for example with (...args) => debugger; fnToSpyOn(...args)
You can spoof console.log this way to see what the fuck is calling it (note: monkey patching for debugging = GOOD, for actual programming = DOGSHIT)
To be fair though, that is possible because of being a dynamic lang and elixir is kind of a hybrid typed lang, fair enough.
But here's where i drop the shit.
Phoenix takes it one step further by following the braindead ruby style of code and pretty DSLs.
I fucking hate DSLs, I fucking hate abstraction addiction.
Get this, we're not writing fucking poetry here. We're writing programs for machines for them to execute.
Machines are not humans with emotions or creativity, nor feel.
We need some level of abstraction to save time understanding source code, sure.
But there has to be a balance. Languages can be ergonomic for humans, but they also need to be ergonomic for algorithms and machines.
Some of the people that write "beautiful" "zen" code are the folks that think that everyone who doesn't push the pretty code agenda is a code elitist that doesn't want "normal" people to get into programming.
Programming is hard, man, there's no fucking way around it.
Sometimes operating system or even hardware details bleed into code.
DSLs are one easy way to make code really really easy to understand, but also make it really fucking hard to debug or to lose "programming meaning".7 -
WooCommerce sucks, Block editor sucks, Elementor is no better, but if you want a real mess, just add more plugins. Bonus: if you use any "third party WordPress plugin", WooCommerce support can always say, oh yeah, I see that you are using a third party plugin, so we cannot support you, sorry.
Fuck, that's not the kind of front-end development that I was hoping to do in 2023.4 -
So dynamic typing means you can just add members to objs on the fly?
But why hadn't I noticed that before giving a long lecture about classes being "molds that we cast objects in"?
Ah, yeah. That's because I'm just learning it at the same time.33 -
Been reading for a while now, finally frustrated enough to add my rant...
Backing up my home server with Veeam to finally ditch raid 5 and add some space. 38% finished when we had to leave for a Thanksgiving dinner. Thought that was perfect because I'd come home to a finished backup, install the new drives and get Plex/webserver back up and running. Nope. Win 10 decides to update and reboot in the middle of my freaking backup at 79% complete. Now, I've just told the friends and family I was with to expect the outage in the next hour or two thinking I was ready. Nope. Start all over again. None of this is truly important, really... But Jesus, that's annoying.
Win 10, you have a special place in hell. And Veeam, as much as I love you, you can be right beside them for not letting me run backup console on Linux.1 -
Reinstalling Windows can be very easy.
I recently found out about the MSMG toolkit, which helps me a lot when I am reinstalling windows.
It basically allows you to remove(and/or add drivers and apps, though i only use the remove part) everything that comes preinstalled with windows 10 from your ISO, saving you a lot of trouble especially with preinstalled apps that refuse to be removed.
I recommend it to anybody reinstalling windows regularly.3 -
I want to finish my Chrome extension.its an extension that you can create a "workspace" and save URLs to that workspace. You can then click on a button and it will open all urls in the workspace as tabs and there's another button to add the current tabs url to the workspace.i want to add quite a few features to it.It is currently on github.

DevFolio
This is a simple responsive portfolio website template. You can use it and make it yours by changing things and colours to your style and liking! I made it with a lot of hard work, love and of course with code :) I'm not a professional coder, but I tried my best to make it look cool and yet still keep it simple.
Mistakes are proof that we are trying!
I learned so much while making this template, if you use it, please let me know. I would love to see how amazing people can make it! I hope you'll like it!
I have used:
- HTML5 for markup
- Pure CSS3 for styling
- Bit of JavaScript to make a hamburger menu to work on mobile devices
- Font Awesome for Icons
- Unsplash for Images
You can add more things to make it even cooler! The comments in the code will help you navigate through it. Have a nice day! :D
you can view the Github repo at https://github.com/achaljhawar/...1 -
Colleague's thought process:
Hmm I have observables but I don't understand shit.
Hey I like listeners let's add listeners to all observables.
Should I make the method return an observable and subscribe my listener to it?
Nah I'll erase everything and pass an anonymous class listener to the method so no one can chain a few calls together.
Fuck you and I hope you're reading this!!!
Time to rerewrite 2k lines of fucking code.... -
15 mins in our weekly dev meeting, boss comes in sits down and starts talking about a project. After that he stands up and brings one of the designer in and begins to make some stuff up we could add. Are you kidding me? That is a dev meeting, he is not even supposed to be there. How rude disturbing a meeting so he can discuss stuff we could discuss later-.-1

Logic of my company:
Why have an auto incremental ID for the table when you can have another table where you have to retrieve the last registered id, add 1 to it, then update the register of the last ID, then retrieve the id and finally create the register you intended.
Justification: “It’s a good practice”

Is it advisable to add an admin page to your website so you can easily make changes like updating images etc. Or should I not bother and just modify the code whenever I want to change something?1
-
Oh yeah Google why don't you just change the parameter order of functions, remove entire functions between minor versions, and not put a single example on your API docs? And force devs to add 30 lines of boilerplate and start an http server so I can run the debugger? Fuck tensor flow, I'm moving to pytorch.2

"Oh, sorry I didn't write you back! I checked 3 hours ago, and we only add the data once in our database before sending the notification to your endpoint, so everything is fine! Check if you run the same functio twice, it's an easy mistake!"
You. Fucking. Moron. You send the data 2 or 3 times (at random) every fucking time. I have nginx logs showing that, and I've fucking shown them to you TWICE. I don't fucking care if your DB is fine, check how many fucking times you POST the damn data. We're already 2 days behind schedule because you can't be arsed to check your own damn code. Ffs. How can you even be a senior developer?! -
On https://reactjs.org/docs/... it is declared that useEffect runs after render is done.
However... if you put into useEffect an expensive calculation or operation e.g. "add +1 to x billion times", it will get stuck after updating the data, but before the re-render is done.
This leads to inconsistency between the DOM and the state which I believe is a foundational point of react. Moreover, the statement that "useEffect runs after render" is false.
See also: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
The solution is to add a timeout to that expensive operation, e.g. 50 ms so the re-render can finish itself.
The integrity of my belief in react has received a shrapnel today. Argh :D Guys, how this can be? It seems that useEffect is not being run after re-render.13 -
I came to the conclusion that 1D can (as in "It IS, but it being only the case when you apply the following") also be 4D, 3D, ..., nD, if you have e.g. a vector with only one element, which can be any number, inside and add more and more elements into this vector with a bunch of zeros.4

Okay so being a developer is mostly like playing a never ending game of whack-a-mole with BUGS, you think you have fixed one until few more pops up like a bad case of acne.
But you know what's even worse? When you finally get something working, and you're feeling all proud of yourself, and then someone comes along and tells you that it's not "visually appealing" enough. "Can't you just add some more glitter and unicorns to the homepage? Oh, and can you make it look like it was designed by a unicorn who majored in art?"12 -
Le Angular programmer
Me: I need to add all these fields across this 30 page (seriously) questionnaire to the dataLayer for Google Analytics...I'll see if I can loop over all the controls and get the native element so that I can do things with it.
Also me: WTF do you mean I don't have access to the native element? Damn it! What does Google say?
**terrible french accent**
A few moments later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: I don't want to have to create a directive to put on every single one of these fields. That's dumb. Not gonna do it...bad vanilla JavaScript?
**terrible french accent**
Several minutes later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: Wait...if we use this directive then the directive can handle all the things AND we can use it outside of this questionnaire. The rest of the app can send this data so that Google Analytics can know all the things
Man Google..You sure do know what I want before I know what I want...Are you spying on me too?1 -

I'm pretty sure we don't need to use brackets and semicolons anymore. Newer versions of gcc bitch when you mess up tabs, which shouldn't matter in C/C++ because of brackets/semicolons, so why require the tabs and newlines?
On the flipside, if we're requiring tabulation and newlines nowadays, why use brackets and semicolons? Just Python it up and you won't have issues where you mess up and add/omit a semicolon/bracket and break EVERYTHING!
"It's so you can write it all on one line"

I’m gonna make an iOS app, here’s the idea.
Everyday user gets some credit. User can use credit to make a post. One credit means one view. The post will be viewed by random people, and after certain views, the post gets destroyed. Users can only view random posts, they have like a little button that whenever you press it, you get a random post
If another user saw the post and thinks it’s interesting, he can sponsor this post with his own credit. Users can make comments however everything will be anonymous. If one user finds another user’s reply or post interesting, he can request to add the user so they can see each others name on posts in the future.
Regardless how much credit a post gets, when it ran out, the post gets deleted.
Before you say anything like oh shit now people have to pay to make posts? Im not gonna make this a pay to win system, so people don’t just gets more credit by paying.
Let me know what you think7 -
So Sonar (Java code style checker) is telling me to return immediately instead of first assigning the results to a variable:
ArrayList<string> strings = ...
{Some long running logic that populates the list}
String x = String.join(strings);
return x;
Declaring x is bad apparently... but I disagree...
Am I not understanding something here?
The upside out this is you can breakpoint it and well you meet want to add additional logic later while you find a bug while debugging...
I guess it would be noticeably slower but a few seconds... If I were to call it 1 billion times?14 -
When you receive a support request for a your product that extend another product.
After few emails you get the access on the website and you discover that is using an old version of the software that you extend and that your support is crappy on that.
Never forget to ask before everything the version of stuff to save time.
Also don't hesitate to give a reimburse for this case or suggest for an update so you can sleep better and maybe ADD AN ALERT FOR THE OLD VERSION THAT YOU FORGOT TO DO on your release. -

Now why am I posting the source code you ask?!!! Well you see writing an app that tells me what new movies were added so I can add it to my watchlist is a poor investment honestly...
Porbably invested 10 hrs writing it and well that adds more movies to my Watchlist. Watching these movies even at 2x speed still takes 1 hour...
I could/should be doing better things...2 -
It's so frustrating going from being able to create a microservice stack prototype by yourself in a couple of months in your free time at home to having to wait 3 months at work for someone to add a build step in Team City so you can automate deploying a database project.

I’m very surprised at the lack of PHP micro frameworks with correct Namespace and Class support. I had to spend my weekend adding it, as well as making it so you can easily add a ORM library to it.
Sure I could use Laravel or Codeignitior, but I just needed something simple for rapid development of simple GUIs for desktop and server applications. I couldn’t justify copying over 6500 files for something I’m only going to use a quarter of its features. Now, I can just use composer to install the features I need.8 -

Where can I find those types of "homework assignments" where let's say a company sends you a sample project and asks you to add few features where in that way you learn new technology in a practical way?
I know there are some public "homework assignments" projects from Wix where you're given a sample project that uses let's say react framework and typescript where you have to learn react and add features and send it.
These projects IMO are the best way to learn new technologies fast instead of going through the documentation and figuring wth are they talking about before you realize the full potential.
Are there any of those "awesome lists" in GitHub or something? No I'm not talking about "algorithms and data structures" type of thing, I'm talking real practical samples that I can learn from and extend it.1 -

so many guns can have hair triggers. why not create a wifi enabled composite replica of guns someone is training with and get them all excited and psyched out and add a tracker to the trigger that opens a simple circuit and reports 'weapon fire' and gun orientation to the computer to help with training and reinforcing the training of proper weapons handling during apprehension or holding of a person so you can take control without shooting them accidentally in war or law enforcement actions, you could add a system that plays a very alarming bad noise when someone in the scenario is accidentally shot or you accidentally shoot the person being apprehended :P you know like you hold a pair of scissors with the point away, train them to hold their finger somewhere when handling a certain way to prevent misfire.
yes i'm thinking about shooting certain people or holding pedo money bags hostage atm. -
What tools do you use to manage how much time you needed to get stuff done?
Any tool where I can stop time and also add things like had a meeting for 1h and so on.2 -
wait..... can you auto indent console logs depending on their nesting in functions?
I just realised it can be hard to read console logs because say you do
log('here 1')
callFunction()
log ('here 2')
But callFunction does a bunch of logging, then your here1 and here2 become separated !
But if you could make console log automatically add a couple spaces for every level of nesting/scoping that would be ideal .. ? 👀12 -
@dfox I'm absolutely loving these avatars! btw I know I'm going to ask too much but can you add the facial hair with a goatee and no moustache.2

Me: Ok, Lets continue with this scratch project. We need to script in a Update Alert (A button we can press to shut down the game and alert players ingame that an update is here), Add upgrades, (Yadda yadda yadda), And Debug the......
Assistant #1: How about lets not worry about Debugging the game and focus on adding more scripts.
Lead Assistant: How about lets Debug AND add the updates just like the developer said.
Just a word to Assistant #1. Number one, Debugging to a game is like cleaning, grooming, and feeding yourself. If you dont do it, the game performance is to be considered "F.I.T.A" or "Fucked In The Ass". it wont get anywhere Fast, Let alone get anywhere at all. Number Two, Updates are important, I admit that, and im not saying they are less important than debugging, but if you add an ass load of updates before you debug, it will take more time to debug ALL of those other updates than just the few we already did. Plus it will only add more stress to the developers which in turn may make us miss(or make) more bugs in development.
Keep in mind that we are developing Scratch Projects that use the coding language "Blocky". -
Is there a debug tool in Visual Studio that acts like a global HashMap<String, object> that you can add random objects to so that you can verify which objects are the same instance between breakpoints and view the state of an object that you had access to but is not in scope at a given breakpoint? I'm debugging a GUI app right now and it's an enormous pain in the ass to track identities, I resorted to adding random properties and statics to classes just so I can express this basic ass persistent debugger state6

A TRIBUTE TO CODERS WHO JUST STARTED MAKING DISCORD BOTS USING PYTHON WITH PYTHON 3.9
When you just got the hype of making Discord Bots using Python ...
You update to Python 3.9 ... And then Go to CMD (for windows users) and type ... "pip install discord.py" ... You are very happy ... thinking finally You can add your custom bot to your server and then ... even pip tells you that you are noob at discord.py -
Chromium has royally fucked their own devtools.
You wanna add a style property? No. You're only allowed to update styles already that are there unless you click on some arbitrary space between brackets and properties.
You wanna click on a property's value to edit it? No. You get a dropdown to edit the unit value OR you can slide the mouse to update the value, nothing else.
You want to update CSS in the inspector, or switch them on or off? No. You get CSS that breaks as soon as you apply it and turns into garbage.
You want to copy CSS from the inspector after changing it? No. You get a line break in between each word for NO FUCKING REASON.
I hate web development sometimes. -

How to Create Beautiful and Durable Pie Boxes
Whether you are looking for a unique gift to give, or you are looking to protect the delicate items you hold, there are many ways to do so with the right pie boxes. By using a custom designed box, you can capture the essence of the delicacies you are storing and protect them for a longer period of time.
Protect delicate items
Using pie boxes is a good way to protect delicate items such as pies, cakes and desserts. However, you need to be sure that the box is the right size and shape to ensure that your item is safely packed. If you don't pack your delicate products properly, they could suffer from moisture and change in temperature.
Before you begin packing your goods, consider whether you should use bubble wrap or paper. While bubble wrap provides an extra layer of protection, it can also leave your product vulnerable to scratching. Choose paper to wrap your items, as it will prevent scratches and will keep them from shifting during transport.
When wrapping fragile items, you need to use a lot of packing tape to secure your package. You should also fill any empty space in the box. You can do this by using bubble wrap, or by adding extra padding. Make sure to mark your box as fragile and to place a label with your name and delivery address on all sides of the box.
Once you've completed the packaging process, you need to seal the box and place it in the shipping box. Besides bubble wrap, you may also want to include ice packs to add extra protection. A cushioned ice pack is another option for additional protection.
You should also use quality packing tape, and make sure to cover all the openings of your box. You can also use zip-up bags to help you keep your things in place.
It is important to know the best way to protect delicate items, so you can prevent them from damage during the shipping process. There are many ways to do this, but you should use the right tools for the job. Purchasing a box that is the right size and shape for your items is the most effective way to do it.
When you use custom pie boxes, you can rest assured that your pies, chocolate pies and other edibles will be safe. They're manufactured with modern equipment and environmentally friendly printing techniques.
Make a gift
Whether you are giving a pie for a birthday, wedding, or as a thank you gift, you can make pie boxes that are beautiful and durable. Several pie box designs are available online, but you can also create your own. Here are some simple instructions to make a simple, yet elegant box.
The first step is to print out a template of a pie box. You can use a piece of scrap paper or decorative paper for your design. If you are using decorative paper, cut out a rectangle the size of your box. If you are using colored cardstock, you will need to cut out a pie filling layer. Once you have a pie filling layer, copy it for several boxes. You can also add other designs or embellishments to your boxes.
Next, place your colored cardstock on your cutting mat. With your x-acto knife, cut out a rectangle that is as large as your box. You will need to fold it on the dotted line. If you are using an x-acto knife, it will be easier to fold the box. Alternatively, you can use a scoring stylus. If you have a Cricut, you can score the cardstock to make a scalloped box top. You can also use burlap ribbon or twine to wrap your box.
Once you have the box finished, you can decorate it with other decorations or embellishments. You can even use calligraphy or other techniques to make the box more special. To close the box, you will need a sticker or piece of tape. You can decorate the lid with patterned paper and a clear plastic screen. This will allow you to see the contents of your pie. You can also use embellishments such as ribbon, glitter, or other materials to make the box more fun.
If you are giving a pie for a holiday or party, you can decorate your box with a festive theme. For example, you can have a holiday tree on the front of your box. Or, you can dress it up for a tailgate party.2 -

So finished 2 weeks project for co-worker. Now she can register cargo waybills to database and not to excel(I have nothing against it, but to have centralised way to keep data is better practice). Anyway project was done with Cpp, wxwidgets(first time trying GUI in my project), postgressql. Now I can see a lot of things I can rework, fix or add something new. I guess you can't finish fully anything.
