Me: how to optimize key storage in a binary tree

WHATTT?!! I need 10 WHOLE POINTS JUST TO BUILD AN AVATAR!!! What kind of person would set such a high amount of points just to CREATE AN AVATAR! Do you know how hard that is for an introvert... ugg What kind of post should I rant about? I could rant about that one problem with HTML <divs>.. but then everyone would laugh at how simple that was... I could rant about how long I have had to live without this app. No no that would be way to big of a rant... hmmm. OH I KNOW!37

I find it amazing how she was able to write all that code by hand, without any tools to assist her. I don't even want to think about the enormous amount of time she spend debugging that.21

Couple rants ago I talked about how it would be easier to just block people from the EU, apparently somebody made that idea into a hosted script! LOL

How do you politely tell someone that constant conversations about progress slow down progress?
Not only do I have to stop for 30mins to explain what things I've changed, but now I have to rant about it on devrant.3 -
It's quite awesome how some people can make you realize how much you actually know about some stuff and how skilled you are on a certain subject.
Shoutout to @404response for making me realize that i actually know quite some stuff about security/privacy and also a shoutout to @devisionbyzero for making me realize that I'm actually quite good with linux/linux servers :).
Thanks guys!13 -

Last week we had a short seminar at work about 'listening skill.'
In that speaker gave an example how 'natural' leaders speak last in the meetings.
From that day we are having entirely silent meetings.
Now management is planning seminar on 'Speaking Up'3 -
Annoyingly typical office conversation:
Person 1: "Good morning."
Person 2: "Good morning, how are you?"
Person 1: "Good. How are you?"
Person 2: "Good."
Person 1: "Good."
NO! Not good, fuckers. I hear this all day long, come up with something real or original. Talk about the massive shit you just took, or how hard you're taking the news about Diablo Immortal. It reminds me of that scene in Office Space with the repetitive call center lady, lol.17 -
Client: We can talk about how you would like to be paid for this endeavor. I'm open to ideas on that front.
Me: Preferably with money.5 -
New video card is arriving today.

I got an email a couple days ago about a tweet a made about how web developers are unanimously very happy that Microsoft is dropping IE. I got a very angry email from someone who really loved Internet Explorer, apparently 🤔, saying that my tweet was, and I quote "offensive to those who used it loyally for years". That was hysterical for me to read.14

I'm a newbie when it comes to programming. The thing I like about devRant is that I'm learning how not to be "that guy" from everyone's complaints.
Here's to devRant teaching us newbs how to not make as much of a mess of things.8 -

Manager: How’s the progress coming along?
Dev: The section of code I’m working with is one of the more difficult ones so it’s a little slow
Manager: Ok well I didn’t write that section of the code
Dev: I’m not saying you did I’m just giving you the status update that you asked for
Manager: Ok well I can’t really do anything about that so how about you tell me something I can do something about instead of just complaining about code THAT I DIDN’T EVEN WRITE!! *Marks self as offline*
Dev: …10 -

It happens to me often!!! 🤣🤣1 -
Yea... so you know all those rants/jokes about how you need to explain programming to ur friends and family?
I just realized I don't have that problem.... all of them are programmers as well :)8 -
To that person who came here to weep about how his employees don’t want to work on weekends and how he’s gonna force them to and deleted his rant that was downvoted to oblivion:
Please re-evaluate your mindset. Today it’s just downvotes, tomorrow it’s your entire staff quitting and pressing charges.17 -
Funny how it's the conversation when I give my 2 weeks notice that all this comes up, like:
1) how they were "talking about giving me a raise"
2) how they were "hiring more people" so I could spend more time coding and less time doing bullshit
3) how they were going to fix all the other broken things in the company
How do you think it would fly if instead they fired me and I promised to fix everything that's wrong about my working there after the fact?
Anyway, I knew they would pull this bullshit so it was expected. Excited that I signed the new offer today. Finally getting market rate pay and expecting better work environment as well. 🐶3 -

I watched the news recently and they talked about cyber security.
To demonstrate "how serious the topic is" they showed a screen with a terminal and literally pinged google.com.
I thought that was funny7 -
So... I've seen my dad talking a lot about quantum computers, and it's getting quite embarrassing to be there when he talks about them. He doesn't understand shit about them, except that they somehow use quantum mechanics for something.
Last week my uncle from Spain visited us. He's a Cristian pastor, and a cool guy, so they always talk about god and similar themes. We gathered the family to have a dinner with my uncle as he only was going to be one day with us. This is how part of the dinner went by:
" so, <Uncle's name>, have you heard about quantum computers?"
me thinking:*Oh my God. Please not again... *
"The nasa, the US government and all kinds of powerful entities are getting the quantum computer."
He always talks about THE quantum computer as if it was just one big machine.
"They have found that multiple universes exist through it. If this is what they are telling us, imagine how far they've gone. Remember that technology is always 8 years ahead of actual public technology."
Me:*please dad, stop. Who the fuck is made that claim and how many fucking years ago?*
"Did you know that many people remember that Mandela died in prison, while in the oficial version, he died after it? They must be messing with multiple universes, or multiple timelines are getting intertwined."
Me: *please, not the mandela effect again*
Then my dad procceded to talk about multiverses and how THE quantum computer was the future and about some parts of the Bible that supported it. Bizarre, I know.
When we are alone, I always try to tell him how things actually work but he always twists my claims to support his. Last time I told him that the mandela effect was perfectly explainable by psychological phenomena around forgotten memories. But this is going to far... Fuck the guys that made zeitgeist. Fuck Alex Jones. Fuck random youtube conspiracy channels. They make technology look like fucking magic for muggles.10 -
Yesterday I spent some time on the meta site for dba.stackexchange.com and found this one guy with 1 rep raging about how his questions aren't getting answered and how is answers are the best etc...
"I have 17 years of experience as a dba, blah, blah, blah, my answers are correct, blah, blah"
He got pretty destroyed by the mods and other users about how shit his answers were and how they weren't factually correct etc...
This just continues to show that no matter how much experience you have you won't always be right.
Same goes for my senior at work, he has 10 years more experience than me (I have 2) and he still asks for my point of view and help without being a dick about it.
I hope we'll all keep being nice people unlike that Stackexchange guy...2 -
"How do you make an app?"

How old were you when you started programming?
I'm curious about that... I want to introduce childs to programming but I'm not sure which age is the correct one to begin.52 -
I come home pretty tired after a long day of classes and work. I call my family. So this is how it goes:
7-year-old-brother: I want to make a programmable robot. How do you do that?

I dont know if I should hate it or love it that I had to teach "certified microsoft engineers" about how Exchange works.14

At a point in your life, you'll settle down abit, and you start to think about what you've done in the past (idk) years of your life.
Then you think about your career, how everything is ever since you discovered you were good at a certain thing since highschool.
be it programing, writing random codes, pentesting (or if you had that "hacker" phase in your life) or fixing laptops and etc.
"Good"
You think about the word, and you had a thought: You only know how to do it, how it works, how its done, and how to do it.
You only "Know", it takes practice, patience, dedication and years (or months depends on you) of experience before you can really say for sure you're "Good" at it.
Me? Im no where near good. but that doesn't stop me from going there.
And i hope the same goes for you. You can do it,
Have a great day.3 -
Manager: we should arrange regular catchups, I have several Monday morning, how about 10:30, that'd be 9:30 your time?
Me inside: dude, we both know I struggle to be up in time for the scrum at 10, do you really think I'm going to be any better at 9:30?
Me outside: How about 10:30 after scrum?
Manager: OK, that works, I have half an hour between meetings
Me: Thank fuck.4 -
Started writing an operating system several years ago. Taught me just about everything I need to know about computers.
Oh, and make NES games. That teaches you a lot about how we arrived to where we are today.1 -
Hmm best part of being a Dev? I guess it is the fact that you can know how things actually work in inside something instead of looking at it and saying "Its Magic!". It kinda ruins playing some games, since you figure them out pretty quickly.
Other than that, I like the feeling that I know enough about computers and performance and how things work that I can choose the best Desktop/Laptop and stay away from marketing bull. :)1 -
Earlier i ranted about how someone hacked our site and he had our source code.
Now finally we found how was our site code stolen, thanks to @dfox he mentioned how can we pull code from got server at that time I checked trying commamds to dowload git folder but it was secure but later we found that we had another subdomain running for pur project and its git folder was not secured16 -

Worst: Getting fired for talking too much shit about how the higher ups don’t know how to run a company.

Last night I had a minor hiccup with a iOS/Android CI service I absolutely love (BuddyBuild), so naturally I contact their support to address the issue and ask about potential new plans. A couple minutes later I find out I'm talking with the CEO! Turns out he's a really nice and receptive guy who cares a lot about their service!
How cool is that!? It was nice to tell him how much I've enjoyed their product and about the headache it's saved me!3 -
That moment that you finally have a functioning goddamn application and then you notice that the queries (Postgis) are so fucking heavy (one percent load up when executing about 5 simultaneously) that you start to wonder how you'll ever run this in production...
I know jack shit about Postgres/Postgis, this is going to be fun 😐14 -

run system diagnostics and

C: Wow .. yeah how do we do that?
M: turn it off and on again! -
Reading up on how floats are stored and it's pretty cool how you can store numbers as large as 3.4×10^38 in the same amount of memory that an integer can store only about 2 billion.
Absolutely wonderful7 -
A few years ago, a fellow programmer called me to teach him how to use git blame to find out who wrote that piece of code that broke the monetary ecosystem in this game. He was pretty upset about it because they blamed him about it. I gladly helped him just to see my own name there. Sad story.1

The more I learn about programming the more terrified I become about having huge knowledge gaps and learning something wrong by possibly making wrong assumptions about how certain things work or by falling on bad tutorials. I'm constantly hyped about coding, and at the same time I always feel I will never be able to say confidently "I know how to code".
How the hell do you make sure you are learning programming correctly as a self taught? Or do i just have to accept that no matter how and what I code there will always be a better way to do it, resulting in me constantly feeling as a low-skilled coder?3 -

Another small story about my "teacher".
Today we got told again that we need to develop a personal programming style. I asked him how we were supposed to do that while being restricted by his demands. He tried to justify this with bullshit about how to not declare variables. As i told him that wasn't my point at all he stuttered and couldn't say anything. I got officially allowed to use everything i want! VICTORY SCREECH
(But restricting students on which commands they are allowed to use is still bullshit imho)5 -

how about that Linux coming to Windows business? i know normal people couldn't give a shit. what about you guys? +1 if you think it's awesome, comment why if you think it's bad.12

Why is it that CS students with no industry experience lament about HTML all the time?
I don't get the weird obsession with talking about how it's "not a programming language"
No one who knows what they're talking about is claiming it is.

How about you started off with programming?
I'll start with a veery old picture of my first Java-Code I've written (if you can call it eben that). At that time I tried to code using a JS-Designer. Just hilarious. 😂😂😂9 -

So I recently returned from university and was catching up with people. Then this guy(childhood friend) who is in EE was "asking" me about how my academics were going. So I was describing my cs classes to him until he suddenly interrupted me saying he knows "how algorithms work" and also that IT == CS. I tried my best to explain to him that it is not the same thing, but his ego just couldn't allow me to talk. He continued on forcefully about how he did a project in java that used SQL and blahblahblah. After he was done exhibiting himself, he asked me what languages do you know(LOL)? When I tried to explain to him that cs is not about learning languages, the guy proceeded to interrupt me again and tell me how his curriculum is hard so as to imply that mine is shit. Finally, this human waste told me to "open java" so that he could code, I opened up my terminal, which he responded to by asking me "What is that?"2

"We totally know everything about SEO, you should trust us and pay us so your website is #01 because we know how Google ranks their shit" (not literally)
No fuck you. No one knows how google ranks pages. No one. And your pseudo information is even free to find on the first google result about seo that is above yours. Oh look, they must be better than you with that.3 -
Recently I came across a job advert that literally said:

"damn bro, you made that? how can i get into coding?"
shut the fuck up. you can get into programming like anyone who wants to can. by googling how to code. it's not the question itself that bothers me, it's the fact that if you actually wanted to code so bad, you already would've googled it. stop projecting your lack of passion on me.
this is most common with programming, but it happens so often with so many other things.
if you want to learn about biology and chemistry, there's free courses online and papers from nih.
if you want to learn about forsenics read a book about it and read about cases and how they were solved.
i could go on and on. the internet gives you access to so much that if you actually wanted to learn something, you would've already have.4 -

I've been away from devRant (and other social media) for a few days because I thought i needed to concentrate on a project that I'm currently working on.
I just realized that I need this, I really need to rant! There is just too much to rant about. Like how fuckin annoying tomcat is, (don't ask me, someone is paying for me to use it), or how eclipse is happily hugging over 1gb of my ram, ( again don't ask), meanwhile vscode is doing just the same thing (debugging a tomcat server) with less than 300mb! There's so much to be annoyed about that I truly don't know how I was getting along before devRant.2 -

A girl I know is a Economics major with a minor in CS. Today she told me and a friend how hard their Java course is. I asked her about the topics that get covered in that course and when I asked her about JavaFX.

Today I learned that JavaFX is not a part of Java :D2 -

Not sure if I'm disappointed or relieved.
Just spent 5 years trying the get into this class. Studying and asking and getting recommendations. I knew it had less than a 5% pass rate but it's all that I've been aiming for for years.
Finally got into it, and spent 4 months working my ass off. Today I got told that I'm maybe being dropped. And honestly, as disappointed as I am, and I might need a new dream to aim for, I'm actually pretty okay with it.
I've been so stressed and annoyed and unhappy lately. I was starting to debate if this is even what I want. And for the first night in a while I can just drink whisky and not worry about the next test or doing classwork at midnight instead of sleeping.... I can just relax and whatever happens happens. I can't control how tomorrow goes.
Not sure if "oof. I need a drink" or "thank god, lets celebrate with a drink!"3 -
iOS corner curves. I was thinking about how to make them on the web for a while now. This night, I saw a nightmare about a dog that drowned. In that dream, it was me who was responsible. I woke up in the middle of the night, and I knew exactly how to make those curves.
I _told_ you they will be mine, two hours ago. I made it. Thank you Shányushka the dog that never existed. Rest in peace.17 -

Thought I'd share another one with you. Last year I saw a turorial posted on LinkedIn about how to create a captcha in ASP.NET. The turorial itself wasn't that bad but it made me laugh so hard because the writer thought of a neat way to input the desired captcha code to the handler that generated the image. Guess how? In the query string. That totally defeats its purpose. How on earth did he come up with that. So much for securing your form submission through captcha. Of course when I commented about it he didn't reply. I hope no one actually used that tutorial.2

We argued for a while and I realized that I’m using my past donations not only to convince him but to win the argument..

LinkedIn recruiter:
- messages me about a fantastic job opportunity
- waits exactly 3 days
- messages me asking about the cool company I work at and how I find the engineering department here
- again 3 days
- messages me saying that he has heard some amazing recent news (there were none) about the fast growing company I work at and asks how I feel about the changes caused by our headcount growth
- 3 more days go by
- today, I get a notification that this recruiter has given me random LinkedIn endorsements for some skills that I had put on my profile back in college and since then forgot about even the existence of the endorsements feature
My favorite part is that the job they had originally sent expects a few languages and other tech skills most of which I actually have listed on my profile, but naturally, he only endorsed me for skills not required for said job spec.

Coworker 1: yes!
Coworker 2: easy!

whenever i tell my dad about a technology that is going way beyond our imagination and tell him about the consequences of it and how we should worry about that
then he watches some random tv show about internet security/cyber security and various algorithms (very abstract) which are currently changing the world and how we should care about our data and what the consequences of X technology is...
he be like: "oh is that true? that's interesting, how does that work?"
i'm like😑 dad, i already told you about that😩

the funny thing about bugs, they reproduce on their own just fine, and often where you don't want to them. the trick is figuring out how they reproduce so you can work out how to make them stop reproducing. to do that, you have to intentionally reproduce them.2

Becoming member of a political party.
I met a lot of smart people, had many great debates about different issues, yet most of all: I learned how dangerous group dynamics can be. (It's insane how fast Us-vs-Them-group-thinking can manifest itself.) I learned to reflect myself (the hard way) and that if I want to convince someone, rational arguments is not enough if you are a dick about it and that sometimes the how you say things is so much more powerful than the what.
Basically, I learned a valuable lesson on how (not) to communicate. I still profit from that on a daily basis in my work as a developer.
(On the other hand, the whole experience made me rather cynical about the state of the world at large.) -

Not sure how people will see outside since it won't have Windows...3 -
Not a rant, just another story about me and the man I'm gonna wife.
We both have an upcoming job interview, and I was just talking about how at our previous internship I was using python to automate some tedious tasks for me.
Me: it's like a general thing, right, to just automate things you don't really want to do
...
Me: like breathing, and waking up, ya know? I don't wanna do that shit
Him: it kind of already is automated.
Me: *three years of wasted time at med school come tumbling back in to my brain, suddenly recalling the brainstem*

This is about both worst boss and most annoying co-worker.
Well, this boss didn't care how much code we wrote, or how good it was (well, at least he didn't care that much); only how much commits we do. And this coworker literally did a script to do a commit every 10 minutes. 24/7. Everyone else was completely mad about it and about a week later we achieved that he was kicked from the job. Since then I still get trauma if someone commits something unimportant.9 -

Recruiter called me to present me a job in fintech.
Arguing about how work standards are important and that task oriented work culture is great.
....
Recruiter (can’t find any argument): All people work in office. It’s financial institution they need to protect privacy.
Me: AWS on last summit presented show case of whole bank from EU in their cloud infrastructure.
....
And we argued for at least 10 minutes where me was talking about losing time and task oriented workplace with specified goals and listening about how brilliant people are there and how much they believe in opensource.
I started believing they want me to go to work to indoctrinate me and make me corporate pig.
Hell no I am to old for that.10 -
Recent rant about hipster styled mobile-first websites which actually look awful on a desktop PC reminded me of this. How is this a good UX if I have to zoom out your page every single time? C'mon, I am not blind ffs!

Devs: How should we design the UI?
Design & Marketing: We were thinking something like the Ferrari website (or app that has nothing to do with our industry)
Devs: How about we add <feature that all of our competitors have>? We're falling quite behind on that and its hindering us from connecting with their REST API.
Marketing: Nah that's too complicated, and our customers haven't requested it. How about we add some animal animations over there instead?1 -

Make CS introductory courses introduce more. Last year I took one in my uni to check out how was formal education in programming. They took an entire semester to teach what I learnt in about a week (about 2 hours a day of dedicated learning). They only taught python, a language you can pick up in about 6 hours of learning. To give you a sense of how slow this course was, they took TWO weeks to teach how lists work. This are university level courses in an institution that pretends to be the best in the country. Fuck that shit, they are incompetent as fuck and treat their kids as 5yo boys.

The customer may always be right, but you are not a customer, you are a client. As a client you have come to us because you have no idea what you are talking about. Rarely do you even know what it is you even want. So how can you be right about something you know nothing about. I want you to be happy with the end product; I emotionally need it as it determines how I value myself as a developer. So trust me when I tell you that you are wrong. That is why you are my client. To give you what you never knew you wanted.

How about a rant about devrant?
Where the heck can you find info about how stuff works within a rant?
How do I embed a picture or a link properly?
How do I use the smileys?
Actually, the post-window itself should empower the user to do these things, but all you get is the attach image thingy.
I presume this all works out of the box when ranting with your mobile phone or something, but using the port rant thing on the site, I have no clue.
So, can someone please link me to the OBVIOUS location where this info can be found and that I missed? Thanks.22 -

when i look at the code structure of the project i work on with my friends, i always think about how to implement the SOLID principles of bob martin for clean code

That time when you are taking about personal projects with other developers and their past frustrations come into the project discussion all of the sudden. Kevin and I work together on a deep learning project. We have to present our initial literature survey to the review panel, in preparation for that after preparing the presentation (ppt) , we needed to prepare for presentation i.e cut hair shave beard (that's the preparation most developers toil at) and to top that we need to wear formal clotihing ! (yeah! you heard that right ironed formal pan formal cloth).
Kevin went to the barber shop for a hair cut and planned it later. The barber was an unemployed mechanical engineer ( a prerequisite for the story ahead) he casually started asking kevin some personal questions which included questions about his stream in engineering , project etc etc.
When he got to know about deep learning project we were working on.
He with so much hypocrisy, prejudice started belittling our project and also all developer about how they just copy-past code from github, etc etc. Also about how he also' can build website and stated that developer make money by just copy-paste job and about how majority of developers are just douchbag and told my friend to regret on not taking other vocation.
I am gonna go to his shop tommorow let me know, how to respond to that jerk.
I am gonna make his ears bleed, thats for sure.4 -

so how about to get past that big monster at the end of time, which has been thus constructed into a loop by a very large interlinking collection of lying idiots.4

Non-rant rant here..
Anyone living in Europe that got his/her devrant stickers? If so can you tell me about how much time approximately it took to ship, so I can calculate, as i need to be at another place at about a month..
Keep ranting!1 -
How about, instead of bitching about how bad it is that something that I had nothing to do with doesn't work, actually listen to me while I try and fix it.2
-
Hypothetically, if you had a disease and needed to fix it on your own or would open the possibility of a worse condition… how would you manage that situation…. And let’s say, you were also the only one that knew about it; and, it had to be that way?…21

Any worthy deals that you couldn't resist? -
Fuck Facebook and fuck their Graph API. Would it fucking kill somebody over there to write actual facts about request limits instead of that pretentious bullshit about their CPU resources and just how cool and awesome it is for me to use.

Anyone have the link to that rant where the individual is yelling about how maximum password lengths are retarded? I just really need to read that right now... the max password length on this site is 14 CAHRACTERS7
-
God I am fucking sick of hearing people I know are full of shit talking about how they served their country or how they were always here or how they're the same age as I actually am 20 years younger or pretending that nothing ever changed and time never passed

Girlfriend complains about how I'm always on my laptop, coding, and how I'm not spending enough time with her.
I tell her that my laptop is not the NUMBER ONE thing in my life, but She is.
Little does she know that as a programmer, I start counting from zero6 -
Any .Net gurus about? Got a question about testing how many open connections I have.

I really like that SO have that documentation section. It's teaching me things about writing documentation that Lord knows University will never teach me. It's great to see how things are done in the industry compared to the ancient practices we're taught.1

how can there be any usability issue in google search console that lighthouse did not warn about before?3

Recently learnt about machine learning and it's applications. First thing that comes to my mind "how often do women buy lingerie from supermarkets?"
-
Two words: drink coffee.
Besides that, a good playlist with non-vocal music, and a clear head. If I am excited about some other aspect in my life, I have little desire to code that day. I find it easiest when I start thinking about how to resolve a particular issue. -
I have a meeting in 1 hour that should be about the deployment of a product. This morning I got 2 emails from the client about some not so small changes.
Not sure how I can explain that I'm not a wizard. -
"Nuxt 3 is currently in beta, keep in mind that it is not yet production-ready."
How about I use it in production anyway, huh? You can't stop me anyway and the client pays too little to care about resiliency of the app compared to my fun of learning, thenks. -
When 10 months old article about possible problems and how to avoid with mocha, chai and es8 is outdated as hell...
But the problem is that only in the comments did they write that it is outdated!7 -

How would one go about pulling the entire post history? ...and the weekly questions? Is that even okay, and if so, do you perhaps share archival data somewhere? I mean devRant, of course.1
-
how long is the gap for responsible disclosure again? isn't it a week?
Cengage still hasn't gotten back to me at all on my case with them. It's been about that... -
Okay you AI Gurus! I am interested in using voice cloning to make characters that sound like me and other people. I don't know anything about how this works, but I did find one company that does it fairly cheap: https://beta.elevenlabs.io/pricing Some guy on r/Skyrim used that company to produce a guard from the game reading a book about the Dragonborn. It sounded really good! https://reddit.com/r/skyrim/...
Are there some other places I should look into? I would like to do voices that sound good, but are kind of generic. I also don't get how you would go about making them react emotionally to a situation. Perhaps I need to create voices that are excited, angry, etc versus calm. -
