First time I've seen an app which willingly, intelligently, and sensibly turns off its own daily notifications after I never used their app for many many weeks.

Props to the devs for taking into account people like me,who are just too lazy to disable an app's notifications. Also Enki is absolutely incredible for devs so go check it out :D

I haven't checked my work email in a month or two.
We use slack, so every time someone needs me they just message me there or text me. It works nicely. I also dislike email in general.

Anyway: I looked at my inbox this morning, and again just now. I've gotten just over 900 emails today.

Why?
Tons of useless alerts on a shoddy as hell codebase. As an example: Every time a coworker uses a tool or lookup with a sub-par query, it ties up the single shared database long enough to generate response time alerts.
As a better example, there are many many many informational alerts that intentionally begin with "500 Internal" specifically to trigger an email alert. Why? I guess they were useful at some point?

There's just so much to fix...
And I guess I don't care enough.

On the bright side: this gives me a great reason to ignore my email!

The worst feeling is writing so many lines of code knowing you could do it in a more concise way if you just had time to think about it but you don't.

After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... I dabbled in many areas but I do web dev most often. And seriously: fuck web dev. Your site has to work on multiple browsers. Multiple screen resolutions. The code has to be tiny for load time. The images have to work for every resolution and still be small. The styling can look different in different browsers. So many useful javascript features are only supported by modern browsers. An on top of that: IE.
I’ve gotten quite good at all of this, but still: it’s such a fucking pain.

Once I quit this job, I'm never getting a Mac again. I know many like working on one but for me it just gets in my way, it's naggy, the window manager is clunky, homebrew is a crappy package manager compared to pacman and good do I miss focus follow mouse. This is the third time that I've used macos for insert a year and it has actually gotten less pleasant over time.

The senior programmer at work commits so rarely that in 3 months I committed more than him in 3 years (e.g. 0 times in September)...

What’s the point of having a repo on bitbucket if most of the time the latest code version is only on his machine?

I like being self taught because I can work at my own pace and try different languages to see what interests me most. But so many of these tutorials are just shit. Or the content is good and the instructor is shit. I may need to just suck it up and go to Uni, but I am 19 and enjoy my time working and my free time. Background: I worked a LONG time for a software company which developed a BIG crm software suite for a very niche sector. The softwary company was quite successfull and got many customers, even big companies bought our software. The thing is: The software is written in Ruby 1.8.7 and Rails 2. Even some customer servers are running debian squeeze... Yes, this setup is still in production use in 2022. (Rails 7 is the current version). I really don't get it why no one asked for the specific setup, they just bought it. We always told our boss, that we need time to upgrade. But he told every time, no one pays for an tech upgrade... So there it is, many TBs of customer data are in systems which are totally old, not updated and with possibly security issues.

So, there's something I really don't understand.
Everyone here is complaining about Windows and that it "always BSODs".
I've only seen 4 Bluescreens in the entire time I used Windows. That is over 7 years.
So, what are you doing to your computer to cause so many Bluescreens?

Time tracking. 😡🤮 If I’m salaried and only working on one project for one client, why the hell should I waste my time making weekly reports of how many hours I spent coding, reviewing pull requests, and sitting in (mostly pointless) meetings?

I am always shocked how many people at work are not able to use Google efficently. No matter if experienced developers or graduates. They are not able to limit search results to a certain period of time, search in certain pages, for certain file types and so on. EVERY FUCKING search result gets clicked, although you can already see in the preview that it's absolute crap and not relevant at all. I could cry sometimes and the worst part is, that many of them don't want any help or suggestions.

When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.

Maybe it's an unpopular take, but I don't get why so many people keep whining about debugging. If you hate debugging so much, why would you become a programmer in the first place? Wouldn't you be miserable most of your working time?

Today was a good day.. time to hibernate...

So my Xcode was taking forever to archive and export builds. I opened keychain access and deleted all certificates and keys except the one distribution cert. there weren't many, must have been around 14, but that reduced archive time from 15 to 5 mins, and export time from 1.5 hours to 10 minutes! Yay!! :)

For the last time, SLOC is not a measure of anything.
Have too many, the code probably isn't DRY.
Have too few, you probably don't follow a style guide and have 120 char lines because you invented "oneliners" which you were so proud of that you had to put it in there.
Have just the right amount, and the code likely suffers from both of these at the same time.

Great to be back on devrant after so many months. I just got fired from my first dev job which took most of my time and energy and gave me back weight gain and some react and Node.js knowledge.

It feels so good to be free. I never liked web development anyway.

I love web development and web design. You can make something custom that looks great in a short period of time. Use the many frameworks to your advantage.

Also, for the people hating css, i get it. It's har sometimes but it's not that bad. Flexbox makes your life waaay easier.

Put me deep into an anxiety crysis that it was very difficult to escape from. Months of hard work, at the sacrifice of many other valuable things, helped me to climb out of this hole. It was a struggle, but I finally made it. Earlier today I retook the exam. It was great. Thank you for standing by in this difficult time of my life. We live in a post-thisfuckingexam-time. Many of my rants on here were influenced by this issue. Now they probably wont ever be again. Thank god, and thank me for keeping it up.

After many days of going through my first time LFS experience, I have finally booted into my new lfs system with no problems :) Seriously the coolest feeling seeing it boot for the first time knowing how much brain power I had to put into it. Cant wait to continue the LFS journey!

How old are you guys? How many years of experience have you got?

How can you call yourself a code if you live in a city and never experience the outdoors, trees, birds, life. I do it all the time and it gives me so many more ideas and concepts to include in my coding.

I think JavaScript is like a woman...
- it thinks many many things at the same time and you never know the order in which those thoughts are appearing.
- it has moods, sometimes it just won't do something you expect just because
- you are never going to be 100% certain of what a response is going to be given a particular input

Parents : are you sure it's legal and you won't get into trouble? You know, it seems to involve hacking

Took some time to explain the concept of hackathons. Same happened with a lot my friends. Many of them actually go to hackathons now.

So many tasks to do that are piling up for my startup, and so little time with day job taking it all away from me. Ugh

1. Get more fluent with c#
2. Move together with my girlfriend
3. Get my band started after a 2 year break
4. Increase my salary
5. Decrease my worked hours (I have to many thinks I really enjoy doing)
6. Finally ban JQuery from my workspace for all time

And for the first time I am delving deep into an open source project(Node.js). I wish to understand the source but it's just different. There are soooo many things I don't know. I hope this will be a learning experience and I would finally be able to contribute to an open source project. 😃

Just installed Arch for my first time. Using lxde right now but sadly theres now way I can rotate my 2nd monitor (since I have it vertical). What desktop environments do you guys use? Should be lightweight/fast/not many animations and shit.

So...i have lost the count of the number of posts ranting about W10 sudden restarts because of the updates. Many people lost their valuable work and many more were just annoyed by this occurence...
But it has NEVER happened to me. Every time there was a pop-up message asking me if it was an appropriate time to update. On some occassions i would postpone the same update for numerous times, and it still did not force-restart my laptop.

Question: Is my machine buggy or do people do not know how to set working hours on their machines and postpone their updates?

I can't tell if I'm slacking off or now working at a more normal, slower pace....

How much time do you actually spend working vs taking breaks, lunch?

I went to PyOhio, a conference for python in Ohio. I had an amazing time. I’ve never been to a programming event before and it was a revelation. I met and befriended so many amazing, kind, and intelligent people. The talks were amazing, and it was such a great opportunity. I was even guided through my first open source contribution. Great time definitely going again.

People sometimes say "you work too much" but the truth is most of the time I'm just coding for fun. It's rare to say, but at least to me, and surely many of you guys my work is one of my hobbies. It sucks that many can't understand that.

Know your tools. Take some time to explore them. Knowing shortcuts, the capabilities of your IDE (and plug-ins), libraries and many more will look you like a wizard to others and can save you many efforts.

Seriously exhausted. Crunch time to launch a brand new service... Pulling all nighters and stress.

Second big school project. Designed for at least 2 people. Quite a lot of work for the given time but not impossible to do, as I thought. Oh boy was I wrong.

My partner and I chose a networking project which included setting up a ESXi-Server, a VM (with Windows Server 2008 R2) and a router. We are both not unknowledged so I thought this would be easy-going.
I quickly recognised that my partner liked to spend his time at home rather than actually doing something so I ended up doing nearly everything.
When it came to documenting everything he tried to write something, but it had so many mistakes i had to correct it over and over again.
I asked him multiple times, if we should split and he denied every time and promised to work harder.
End of that story was him being expelled from school because of to many missed lessons and me finishing the project alone. Got a B+ for it.

Why do people not use search engines?
Like there exist so many good search engines and you still ask a question that can be answered by searching 2 minutes on the internet???

Back when I was doing my uni final year project. i was given the choice of either writing codes or writing documentation (graphs, requirement and a whole lot of other madeup bullshit)

I deicide go with coding, sign up with laracast. watch a whole lot of screen cast. and BOOM, coding is easy - I was literally quoting bombastic technical terms like many-to-many relationship to my group mates after 2 videos. (didn't even know what was bootstrap at that time) Thats was when I decide I wanna code for a living. Laravel made me a developer.

If you ever get a chance to refactor a 5/6 years old code , just do it .
Dont loose hope , you'll eventually have a great time .

We have built an entire app that is very critical to our business on google sheets. My boss did this all by convincing people he is doing that to save time on admin panel development. But the business suffers with slowness and so many problems. And he loves google sheets for some crazy reason I don't know.

What is up with red indicators?

In America at the moment, and while they’re probably used in many countries this is the first time I’ve come across them.

Having indicators that are the same colour as your brake lights is super dumb

Why does VC++ deployment have to be so painful? So many flavors of MSVRC, so little time. And don't get me started on the D3DCompile_*.DLL mess.

Too many projects, too little time and didn't get a raise. So I now work on projects that people I like ask me to. Ignoring the other pm's while looking for a better job.

With unlimited time, I'd put resources into the invention/improvement of a container which can be fed photons and is able to bounce them between mirrors for a long time, like days, and can be released at any time.

With that tech, I would build a delayed choice quantum eraser and set it up so that it produces with many photons an interference pattern or strips pattern by choice, representing a bit of information.

Then i would set up many of those devices in a row so that the results are representing bit strings for arbitrary information.

And I will use this time machine, which can send back information, to win the lottery and other stuff.

Longest goddamn development time ever on this one app I’m working on. Totally got demotivated for many months. Only now just starting to finish it.

I have a really hard time staying focused reading through legacy code. As a result, I often miss many subtle details about how a given system is currently functioning.

Suffering from our first service outage since I've been at my new job.

Guess when it happened? While we have TOO MANY projects going on.

When you have too many pots on the stove, you're bound to forget the smallest, most crucial detail.

I've submitted a PR to a large open source project, and I've had no feedback in over two weeks.

I spent a weekend and many late nights working out how to solve this bug - it was my time - and the project team haven't eaten acknowledged the PR.

I'm trying to work on my first full stack project and been looking a lot up for it.

Windows - what the fuck! I cannot understand why people WANT to use this - its' buggy, unstable and the user-experience leaves me with the same feeling as when i step on a dog turd barefoot.

How many years experience as a dev do you need to feel like the cool hacker guy in the movies instead of a blind monkey trying to play the violin for the first time?

Not a web developer, but last time I discovered that developer tools from Mozilla are much more reach in many small but useful functionalities. For example blackbox mode or eyedropper. Plus all other awesome stuff from Chrome.

When your job gets unnecessarily difficult because too many people work on the same files, and then they ignore your changes in version control. I waste more time redoing work that was already done and ignored . . .

When you are trying to get through "Get started" section of a new framework/lib but get so many ideas that suddenly you find yourself creating 5 applications at a time without any idea what the fuck are you doing.

I get invited to happy hour and get togethers all the time but don't want to go. Stop inviting me to shit. I'm sick of thinking up excuses. There are only so many times I can say my kid has something going on.

I hate Windows! BSOD and many other *famous* errors waste my time resolving them.

This happens to me every 6 months and it is so fucking annoying !

The system repairs are so fucking futile! They take so much time *attempting repairs* and in the end give me a failure message.

To anyone with good knowledge of RxJs:

Should I be careful how many subscriptions I have open at a time? I'm specifically thinking about memory usage.

While obviously it's more, does it make a huge impact on memory usage, if I have 20 subscriptions active, compared to 2?

Making a dev enemy? Quite simple. Asked too many questions for the dev. I wanted to learn and understand his reasons, he thought I was undermining his position. Other time, I forced him to make the source code be consistent with the structure of applications existing code. Dude came, made some commits adding features in places suitable for him, despite the code having clean layer separation, which took me long time to achieve.

My college senior project has become a monster. I look at it and all the work put into between my friend and I and all I can think of is

"This shits fucked I'm glad it's not for sale"

Seriously it works for the most part, but we're up to ~2500 lines of code and about as many headaches and it's still missing so much functionality and has so many security flaws. It's a great proof of concept, but good lord I couldn't imagine building it into a feasible application. It'd take months of work full time!

At work, we have an inventory system that has -get this- NO GUI. Only text. And this software apparently has been used for years... I proposed many times to code something waaay better but each time, since I’m not even 18 and I do cleaning, I’m told that I can’t do it... FML.

Why the fuck is midnight 00:00 and midday 12:00? Every other hour is the same for Am and Pm in 12 hour time. I can’t find any explanation other than all of humanity being unable to count.

All date/time libraries must encounter this bullshit. There are so many similar levels of bullshit with everything related to time handling. Time zones, stamp formats, minimum intervals overflows are all so fucked.

- Eclipse (especially when plugged in with any SCM, excluding Che)
- RichFaces / PrimeFaces (from the pre SPA era)
- WebLogic (how many times do you need to be restarted in a day? )
- SOAP (not a dev technology, but even as a protocol. Thank You Microsoft !!!)
- Struts (what were you doing at the same time as Spring ??? )
- GWT (how did this even find its place inside Google? )
