This is one of my favorite quotes when it comes to programming. So many developer are too eager to start coding instead of spending a bit more time on thinking.11
-
ive been doing webdev for many years now, but i think its time i move on before i die from crazies.
who the hell thought it was a good idea using emojis for fucking css class names.13 -
The worst bad practice I do is I keep going to work.
Many years down the road I will probably look back and say I should have spent more time with my wife (who are you?) and children (wow, you are tall).4 -
my all-time favorite xkcd comic. Many will know it already, but i think it's a nice start into devrant community and maybe a few will laughing as hard as i did when i've seen it the first time :)8
-
The worst part of being a developer?
So many ideas, so many possibilities... But so little time to do all of it. :'(4 -
So after many hours of trail and error I've managed to make a devRant client for ComputerCraft computers in Minecraft. :D
Thanks for hosting the server @ParkCity,
Also, I'll probably upload the source to GitHub some time soon.34 -
Try to imagine how many HOURS of admins all around the world time will Ubuntu 18.04 LTS save thanks to this little change!13
-
Made a app in react native when it was on .42 version.
By the time I finished developing it, react native was on .54 version with many components had deprecated.
Ffffffffffuuuuuuuuckkkkkk!!!!!!!!
Facebook why you make changes so fast.
*Crying in corner*15 -
No matter how many times I learn how to center a text vertically in a div, every time I have to spend half an hour just looking for a solution17
-
I'm redoing my setup right now and getting genuinely scared that when I turn on my server, the power will go down.
I'm using so many devices at the same time 😅14 -
DST is my arch enemy.
"Why did I get paid for 7 hours instead of 8?"
"Because you worked from 1:00 till 9:00"
"Yeah, that's 8 hours"
"No it wasn't"
"Why does this input field say invalid time for 02:00?"
"Because that time doesn't exist"
"Why are so many tests failing"
"Because they check timestamps and durations which don't make sense in non-continuous time"
October is even worse...6 -
> needs to do a long task with many repeated steps
> writes a script to do it
> writing the script takes more time than actually doing the task
but the satisfaction of seeing that script working :)7 -
I think I’m starting to really take pride in giving clients longer development times than I think will be needed.
The rule of doubling the time you think it would actually take, plus adding just a little more has protected me so many times...
Don’t be a yes man/woman...7 -
this one time my coworker was having a hard time debugging a javascript function so he set it to alert("kill me pls") and that somehow got into production.
we recieved many support emails from concerned customers that day6 -
Boss: We want this feature ASAP, how will it take from your time?
Me:*giving honest estimation* about 4 days, there are many details to handle..
Boss: oh, we need it tomorrow evening, I said to the client it'll be ready..
SO WHY YOU ASKING ME FOR ESTIMATION YOU F**
😠🤬12 -
First time I've seen an app which willingly, intelligently, and sensibly turns off its own daily notifications after I never used their app for many many weeks.
Props to the devs for taking into account people like me,who are just too lazy to disable an app's notifications. Also Enki is absolutely incredible for devs so go check it out :D13 -
I haven't checked my work email in a month or two.
We use slack, so every time someone needs me they just message me there or text me. It works nicely. I also dislike email in general.
Anyway: I looked at my inbox this morning, and again just now. I've gotten just over 900 emails today.
Why?
Tons of useless alerts on a shoddy as hell codebase. As an example: Every time a coworker uses a tool or lookup with a sub-par query, it ties up the single shared database long enough to generate response time alerts.
As a better example, there are many many many informational alerts that intentionally begin with "500 Internal" specifically to trigger an email alert. Why? I guess they were useful at some point?
There's just so much to fix...
And I guess I don't care enough.
On the bright side: this gives me a great reason to ignore my email!6 -
The worst feeling is writing so many lines of code knowing you could do it in a more concise way if you just had time to think about it but you don't.1
-
After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... AND way too often I see online “learn programming in 30 days or learn programming in a day”... fuck off it’s all lies .. all wrong.. wrong methods wrong philosophy and I’m done with it...
I’m set on doing it this time, I’ve put it off too long, and longer I put it off the more I see shitty interviews! Time to fix it68 -
Dear lord spaghettimonster,
pls not another SomethingJS.io for the world!
There should be a limit on how many JS frameworks are allowed to exist at any time!20 -
Non-dev activity that made me a better dev?
That's an easy one.
Playing the piano. Or better: learning to play the piano.
(With the help of my teacher) I developed many skills that help me learn faster and I learned how to properly use and organize my time.5 -
To me it seems that Software eng has become a „I wanna get rich“ thing..
Too many idiots do it and think they’ll get tons of money..
Not that many new geeks because of that..
Also, I feel like the mentality has switched from quality oriented to shiny oriented..
3/4 of new Software i use contains serious bugs that don’t get fixed because it takes time..9 -
That just takes the damn fun out of it.
"In Python, we don't actually use commas unlike many languages. And as I mentioned last time, a tuple is a lot like a list, but it has it's differences. Oh yeeeah! Did I mention the logic behind if/else if/ and else statements?? They're sooo amazing."13 -
Adventures in security land, part II:
I’m getting pulled off the security review team and instead relegated to part-time security tickets alongside my usual dev work. (So, someone else finds them, i fix them.)
Guess I found and debated too many problems with the lead dev’s code. 🙄13 -
So many bad dev habits...
But the one that results in the biggest headaches afterwards?
Me, when given a problem and being asked an estimated time: 'This shouldn't be too hard, gimme X to do it', only to later find out it's way harder than i imagined.4 -
devRant is the first time I see so many people announcing to the world how much they like the app. Imagine someone be like "I LOVE Facebook! <3"
Btw, I LOVE devRant! <33 -
I found a new hobby: coding in many text editors (or IDEs) at the same time, because "I want to find out which one is better" (I don't know why I'm actually doing this, but I can't stop)
Wait, it's not a new hobby ... I already did this with C++ with using atom and Visual Studio at the same time, then I installed Clion too and VS and Clion were both running along with atom ...question gedit text editors brackets notepad++ vscode eclipse clion intellij wordpad atom visual studio31 -
If you're an aspiring web dev, get comfortable using the command line.
Amazing how many new starters can't restart a service or tail an error log.
I'm not saying it to be a dick, it's just 101 stuff that'll save you loads of time.1 -
Playing way too many games when I was younger I realised I could do work with computers as a job if spent that time teaching myself.
Uninstalled Windows to stop temptation, hellooooo Linux6 -
C++ has become cockpit of Boeing 747
Too many controls? Yes.
Takes shitton of time to get ball rolling? Yes.
You need just bunch of them to get stuff done? Hell yes.
You still have to learn a lot of them if you plan to become professional? Yes.
You need to touch most of the fancy stuff only once in a while? Yes.
Many controls you wont be touching except once or twice in your whole career? Hell fucking yes.
You need those fancy controls when shit goes tits up? You better have them, or you are dead!
Creds: A.M.2 -
so, I hate my job, they give me many tasks (many of tasks are not on my field) with no trainings and no time, plus a salary that is not that good.
I get angry, so I talked with the boss about leaving yhe company.
Well, our discussion ended up by convincing me to stay with the double of the salary.
So, I accepted the offer.
Don't know whether it's the right decision or not..9 -
Who the fuck still puts stuff on sourceforge?? Every time I have to download something from there I feel like I'm downloading malware. So many ads and purposefully misleading links, serious developers should avoid it like the plague!4
-
There's so many cool technologies too look into now a days, but so little time.
-docker
-laravel
-.net
-react
-es6/es7
-elasticsearch
-redis
-unit testing
Where do i download more hours to add to my days?16 -
Not really a dev habit, but a habit many devs have.
My beyond fucked up sleep schedule.
SLEEP CAN
SUCK
MY
ASS
I've woken up at 8 and went to sleep at 12 for two days, and I'm beyond happy with the purely accidental progress I've made, really hope to not fuck it up this time like always.2 -
Fuck web dev.
I dabbled in many areas but I do web dev most often. And seriously: fuck web dev. Your site has to work on multiple browsers. Multiple screen resolutions. The code has to be tiny for load time. The images have to work for every resolution and still be small. The styling can look different in different browsers. So many useful javascript features are only supported by modern browsers. An on top of that: IE.
I’ve gotten quite good at all of this, but still: it’s such a fucking pain.10 -
Once I quit this job, I'm never getting a Mac again. I know many like working on one but for me it just gets in my way, it's naggy, the window manager is clunky, homebrew is a crappy package manager compared to pacman and good do I miss focus follow mouse. This is the third time that I've used macos for insert a year and it has actually gotten less pleasant over time.8
-
The senior programmer at work commits so rarely that in 3 months I committed more than him in 3 years (e.g. 0 times in September)...
What’s the point of having a repo on bitbucket if most of the time the latest code version is only on his machine?
And why I have to recreate and repopulate the db every fucking time because he made so many changes to the structure, which of course conflicts with mine?5 -
I like being self taught because I can work at my own pace and try different languages to see what interests me most. But so many of these tutorials are just shit. Or the content is good and the instructor is shit. I may need to just suck it up and go to Uni, but I am 19 and enjoy my time working and my free time. I think it's time for me to grow up soon though.17

** interview call**
HR: we are recruiting flutter developers.
me: ok...I am interested
HR: how many years of experience are you having with flutter ? we are looking for someone with a minimum of 3 yrs.
me: can you tell me when was flutter launched? (with a lame smile)
HR: ok thank you for your time. 🙂4 -
FUUUUUUCCCKKK, now the websites have new features, where no matter how many time you try to go back from their website, they will redirect back to their SHITTY FUCKING WEBSITE. FUUUUCCCKKKK YOU3
-
Looks like Keybase now also has its own shitcoin. Isn't it about time for that cryptocurrency wank to end already? How many more BitconneeeEEEECT's do we need?
But but but.. this is the next big thing! It will go *stellar*!7 -
Screw the Chief Technology Clown role...
I'm now officially Chief Babysitting Clown...
Skills I can teach you include the following:
- How to read JIRA tickets
- How to write JIRA tickets
- How to check colleagues' calendars
- How to define requirements in English and not some sort of technologically challenged caveman language
- How NOT to do any programming (since I don't have time for that anymore)
And many, many more! Inquire within!4 -
DEAR CTOs, PLEASE ASK THE DEVELOPER OF THE SOFTWARE WHICH YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUY IN WHAT LANGUAGE AND WHAT VERSION THEY ARE WRITTEN IN.
Background: I worked a LONG time for a software company which developed a BIG crm software suite for a very niche sector. The softwary company was quite successfull and got many customers, even big companies bought our software. The thing is: The software is written in Ruby 1.8.7 and Rails 2. Even some customer servers are running debian squeeze... Yes, this setup is still in production use in 2022. (Rails 7 is the current version). I really don't get it why no one asked for the specific setup, they just bought it. We always told our boss, that we need time to upgrade. But he told every time, no one pays for an tech upgrade... So there it is, many TBs of customer data are in systems which are totally old, not updated and with possibly security issues.9 -
So, there's something I really don't understand.
Everyone here is complaining about Windows and that it "always BSODs".
I've only seen 4 Bluescreens in the entire time I used Windows. That is over 7 years.
So, what are you doing to your computer to cause so many Bluescreens?11 -
I see so many rants on here about people getting upset with Windows and deciding to suddenly migrate to Linux. Am I the only one who slowly transitioned to Linux over the time span of serval years and just stopped using Windows because I wasn't really using it that much anymore and not because it did anything wrong?10
-
My boss once decided to employ a team of developers from Ukraine because it was cheap.
I worked with these people (remote) for years and their humuor, hard work mentality and intelligence impressed me.
They became my friends and i have visited them in Poltava many time since.
Please fight for Ukraine! A lot of great devs are there!1 -
Spending a lot of time in 'recent' I greet many people with "Welcome to devRant" every day.
The funny part: half of them used devRant before I even knew it existed but they just now decided to write their first rant8 -
I swear, if I ever were to develop a support ticket system, I'd require credit card credentials for P1 tickets - "for covering potential costs to get the developer to the computer at this point in time". Let's see how many of your fucking tickets are Business critical after all!5
-
> make a merge request
> it gets reviewed one month later
> "I can't accept it there's too many conflicts"
Well wouldn't you say that, maybe next time try accepting the MR when I make it and see how that goes4 -
I set up Rainmeter with the Chromecast Google slideshow and it resulted in an informative and beautiful desktop...
Too bad I never see it.joke/meme rainmeter not enough desktop time it's beautiful slideshow background too many applications12 -
Time tracking. 😡🤮 If I’m salaried and only working on one project for one client, why the hell should I waste my time making weekly reports of how many hours I spent coding, reviewing pull requests, and sitting in (mostly pointless) meetings?6
-
I am always shocked how many people at work are not able to use Google efficently. No matter if experienced developers or graduates. They are not able to limit search results to a certain period of time, search in certain pages, for certain file types and so on. EVERY FUCKING search result gets clicked, although you can already see in the preview that it's absolute crap and not relevant at all. I could cry sometimes and the worst part is, that many of them don't want any help or suggestions.10
-
When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4
-
Maybe it's an unpopular take, but I don't get why so many people keep whining about debugging. If you hate debugging so much, why would you become a programmer in the first place? Wouldn't you be miserable most of your working time?9
-
I recently got a notification that said "the are 590 new rants since your last visit" or something like that.
At the time that I got that notification the last time I logged on was only a day or two ago. And I'm not even subbed to that many people!
You all need to chill the fuck out. It shouldn't be healthy for you all to be this angry all the damn time.1 -
So many years of programming and it's still complicated to explain to my parents why lecturers at university won't spend time to help me debug my code on big projects
And that doesn't mean that I'm -not learning to code- if I don't receive help on finding bugs2 -
AHH! There's so many cool things to program and so many ideas! not enough time to learn. Right now I'm trying to create my first mobile game in Unity using C# and a note taking app for Android with Java, it's melting my head!6
-
So now that Covid is apparently "gone", management wants us to come to the office to participate in daily team building events to hype up people to commute full time...
but still gotta finish those milestone deliveries while having too many meetings and deadlines.
Murphy is watching us from above with a shit-eating grin. -
Time for moms to start asking kids to play GTA V to get some piece from the outside world.
Legit GTA V is less violent than many places in America right now.1 -
Today I build a queue to spread the load of the 300.000 daily caculations. To prevent slow server response time from to many analist calculating at the same time.
First run on the server I managed to get the server load to 120% and get us offline for 30 minutes.
Accepation environment and production are on the same hardware.
Today was not a good day.4 -
Yo it's been a while.
Forgot I still had devRant++ and thought it's high time I return :-)
Wonder how many of the oldies are still here5 -
Speaking of work stations - once upon a time there were not many screens on my desk.. and it was the best ;)2
-
Trying to decide how to spend my weekend, continue to learn node.js and angular.js OR learn vim OR work on side project...to many choices not enough time7
-
Alright lads. Contest time.
How many times have you been asked to
1) Hack someone's Facebook account
2) Fix a laptop or wifi'
My record is like 1018 -
There are so many weird hacks in the quite legacy app I work with I could write a book about all them hacks…
But I must admit, the worst of them all is internal time. Yes, so some blockhead thought it’s a good idea to represent time in a manner completely removed from Datetime objects or timestamps or even string representations. Instead we deal with them as intervals represented by integers - and because this is not fucked up enough by itself, the internal time doesn’t start at midnight, yet the integer representations do. It’s a bloody mess. No wonder most of the bugs we face have to do with dates and time…5 -
Stackoverflow is the worst and best at the same time. So many pricks on that website yet it comes handy almost always3
-
Every time I get a new screen, it's good for about a few days before I realise I need another one.
How many monitors is too many?
Pic related (Dream setup?)8 -
#1 Take French language lessons to revive my long time ago knowledge.
#2 Read as many as I can books on dev topics
#3 Do more outdoor activities (sports)
#4 Liquidate my fucking bank loan
#5 Buy some nice wheels for my car
#6 Try to socialize more
#7 Be part of aiding childrens in need / abandoned ones -
That moment your reading devRant while waiting for a UAT environment to build for the 3rd time in one afternoon.
-
Once upon a time, devs were evaluated on the number of source lines of code written, and how many bugs were found and fixed. Needless to say, a ten line piece of code became 150 lines, a couple of bugs would be thrown in for good measure.4
-
How many here know surge.sh? it seems each time I mention it somewhere, nobody knows it, checks it out and thanks me. It basically allows you to host a static webpage on their servers - for free and with custom domain if you wish. They are also the creators of Cordova/Phonegap.3
-
Kubernetes this. Kubernetes that. New tech this. New tech that. Let's ask developers to spend all their time on learning everything instead of concentrating on the fucking business problem that's no where related to Kubernetes or any fucking specific technology for many companies22
-
In C# you can open as many scopes wherever you want at whatever time you please. Nested within themselves, doesn't matter.
Use this to fuck with the other developers on your team. Fence off their evil code behind a thousand curly braces!
Or maybe jazz up your indentation, give the code a nice and bouncy flow!20 -
"How many time do you need to close this task?"
"Mmh I guess 3 days and half"
"Ow..the delivery is this evening, is that a problem?"
Dude. Seriously, what the fuck!2 -
Oh LinkedIn.
You were ok back in the day. But after the fifth recruiter in as many days sending a message about "fantastic opportunities for the senior codings with the great salary in a relocation budget friendly area", and the only other messages asking me to celebrate someone's "work anniversary", it may be time to say goodbye.3 -
I find it kind of sad how many people think coding seems boring. Personally I find it's a perfect mix of having to be logical and creative at the same time. I need both, and can't imagine doing anything else.
-
I've been asking myself many time before.
Why the heck most of the editor did not show line number as default?
Any solid reason for that?3 -
Just finished setting up PiHole on my RaspberryPi.... no more adblock extensions with shitty performance... no more custom hosts files... and network level adblocking for all devices...
FUCK YEAH
oh, and I added so many lists that it now blocks about 350k domains (ads and malware)
Today was a good day.. time to hibernate...4 -
So my Xcode was taking forever to archive and export builds. I opened keychain access and deleted all certificates and keys except the one distribution cert. there weren't many, must have been around 14, but that reduced archive time from 15 to 5 mins, and export time from 1.5 hours to 10 minutes! Yay!! :)3
-
For the last time, SLOC is not a measure of anything.
Have too many, the code probably isn't DRY.
Have too few, you probably don't follow a style guide and have 120 char lines because you invented "oneliners" which you were so proud of that you had to put it in there.
Have just the right amount, and the code likely suffers from both of these at the same time.8 -
Great to be back on devrant after so many months. I just got fired from my first dev job which took most of my time and energy and gave me back weight gain and some react and Node.js knowledge.
It feels so good to be free. I never liked web development anyway.4 -
My day job is teaching at a school.
On the side, a friend (and coworker) and I have been developing an app for schools for two years.
For the last months, I have been daydreaming about taking the plunge into developing the app full time.
We don't have many clients yet, but it's getting harder to find the time for coding.
Any suggestions?10 -
I love web development and web design. You can make something custom that looks great in a short period of time. Use the many frameworks to your advantage.
Also, for the people hating css, i get it. It's har sometimes but it's not that bad. Flexbox makes your life waaay easier.5 -
Seriously these assholes just gave me shit over half a day and made me use vacation time for a client holiday recently when I work so many hours that family and sleep are a fading fucking reminder of a different life....
Seriously....fuck you -
How many times will you say hi to me when we're passing on the stairs for nth time? How many 👋 will you send me in one day at almost regular intervals? I'm not a fucking rest api. You don't have to generate a fucking oauth token every time you pass me some information. I have a fucking state and it's getting distracted by too much human interaction3
-
The very first sentence in my profile on many freelancing and networking sites is "I am not looking for a full time job at the moment!" I still get fat to many job offers from recruiters, who apparently cannot read.1
-
Seeing so many posts of unsupportive family members makes me sad. :(
I was supported a lot by my family, got provided with all the books I wish for... In a time when there was no Stackoverflow or good tutorials.
I read most books during high school and got beat up for it... But look at me now! :D1 -
A developer said to me: developers may hurry to finish the project before deadline that they might miss many security bugs specially in the updates. That a creative hacker will later take his time and exploit them.
Is it correct ?3 -
How many hours do you put in daily at your day job? Do you go home and work on personal projects? How much time do you put into that? Are you married? Do you have children?
I'll go first:
- 8
- sometimes, probably about 1 hour a day.
- yes
- 3 kids
Your turn!27 -
Stay above petty stuff at work. It can sap time and energy. Not worth it. I have encountered it at so many companies.1
-
I'm curious
How many of you have your own personal website like name.com or something
Also my mentor recommended I build one if I get time. Should I???? I have taught myself HTML,CSS and can mostly understand JavaScript Would it be worth it???16 -
IT'S CAPS RANT TIME!
MYSQL ERRORS ARE SO USELESS! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
I JUST WANT TO ADD A FOREIGN KEY BUT 'Cannot add foreign key constraint' KEEPS COMING UP, AND THE STACK OVERFLOW ANSWERS INDICATE THAT IT COULD BE -LITERALLY- ANYTHING!
THIS IS OF COURSE, AFTER PHPMYADMIN GIVES ITS OWN ERRORS FOR TRYING TO USE THE DESIGNER TO ADD THE RELATION. IT ONLY WANTS UNIQUE FOREIGN KEYS, DESPITE ONE OF THE MAIN USES OF FOREIGN KEYS BEING MANY-TO-MANY AND ONE-TO-MANY RELATIONS!3 -
I like my work, don't get me wrong, but any time I need to work with this fucking 12 years old project that has so many conflicting branches, css that remembers float layouts, half of the files not being tracked, ruby dependencies that are a decade outdated I just want to quit.2
-
Ok everybody, listen up.
For a long time, even before I knew devrant, I failed an exam and had to retake it. It was, and I think this is fair to say without exageration, the worst thing that had happened to me. Put me deep into an anxiety crysis that it was very difficult to escape from. Months of hard work, at the sacrifice of many other valuable things, helped me to climb out of this hole. It was a struggle, but I finally made it. Earlier today I retook the exam. It was great. Thank you for standing by in this difficult time of my life. We live in a post-thisfuckingexam-time. Many of my rants on here were influenced by this issue. Now they probably wont ever be again. Thank god, and thank me for keeping it up.
Tldr: i wrote an exam today.3 -
Damn, there's so many different Hacktoberfest t-shirts available this year. Time to sit down and go "clothes shopping" I guess!
https://devswag.io/2 -
debug hell
senior: i'm going to read the code changes of the PR that caused this bug, many files , lots of lines of code to see if i can suss out this issue
me: skimmed the PR, i give up, unga bunga time, time to compare the variables in the debugger between the different implementations, found the difference
due credit, the unga bunga approach worked this time, might nto always work3 -
My boss creates so many wtf moments with his total tech "un-savyness", although he is the " lead" dev, that I'm getting worried that I might be doing the biggest wtf faces every time ... I can't pretend like nothing is happening anymore .... Fuck!
-
"Here is one of the few effective keys to the design problem — the ability of the designer to recognize as many of the constraints as possible — his willingness and enthusiasm for working within these constraints. Constraints of price, of size, of strength, of balance, of surface, of time and so forth." - Charles Eames
-
Why have so many fucking websites the signup form in the start page but you have to click in the menu to get to the login?!
I signup only once but I have to fucking log in every single time I go to the page!!!11
Annoying...2 -
In 3 years, my antivirus software NEVER made a sound. But I'm pretty sure I visited some nasty websites this whole time and download many viruses.
Does it mean my antivirus never worked?1 -
How many projects do you have going at anyone time?
Me: I'm currently working on two laravel and a WordPress theme.8 -
I have mixed feelings about Qbit research. On one hand, I want it to be open source as much as possible. But the the same time, we give "them" faster access to faster and easier manipulation and exploitation of many things than ever.
(edit: grammar, I'm drunk) -
My area of focus is switching between so many areas of focus without actually having the time to do so. Why is a day only 24 hours long :(1
-
Maybe it's just me, but taking dev work from a little side gig to a salaried career is more difficult than I thought it'd be. Soooo many applications going out with nothing back, recruiters ghosting...maybe it's just a bad time for jobs in general but good lord is it exhausting and stressing me the hell out.8
-
Oh my gosh. Windows is...eh..
I mean, it is outdated and slow, has bugs and many other stuff, but do you know why I use it? It is widely supported.
Compare application support on Mac or Linux! It is nothing compared to Windows.
However, I will still have to deal with it for a very very long time...3 -
After many days of going through my first time LFS experience, I have finally booted into my new lfs system with no problems :) Seriously the coolest feeling seeing it boot for the first time knowing how much brain power I had to put into it. Cant wait to continue the LFS journey!2
-
Self rant!
I'm 27, starting my goddamn first year of computer science in the University.
By the time I'll be done I'm going to be obsolete...
Let me know how good/bad my situation is...
How old are you guys? How many years of experience have you got?13 -
How can you call yourself a code if you live in a city and never experience the outdoors, trees, birds, life. I do it all the time and it gives me so many more ideas and concepts to include in my coding.
#include <outdoors.hpp>6 -
I think JavaScript is like a woman...
- it thinks many many things at the same time and you never know the order in which those thoughts are appearing.
- it has moods, sometimes it just won't do something you expect just because

Me: I'm going to a hackathon this weekend.
Parents : are you sure it's legal and you won't get into trouble? You know, it seems to involve hacking
Took some time to explain the concept of hackathons. Same happened with a lot my friends. Many of them actually go to hackathons now.2 -
So many tasks to do that are piling up for my startup, and so little time with day job taking it all away from me. Ugh5
-
1. Get more fluent with c#
2. Move together with my girlfriend
3. Get my band started after a 2 year break
4. Increase my salary
5. Decrease my worked hours (I have to many thinks I really enjoy doing)
6. Finally ban JQuery from my workspace for all time3 -
And for the first time I am delving deep into an open source project(Node.js). I wish to understand the source but it's just different. There are soooo many things I don't know. I hope this will be a learning experience and I would finally be able to contribute to an open source project. 😃2

So I have been lurking for quite a while and I am so happy with the reason for downvote radiobox. So many times I almost accidentally downvoted rants with my thumb by simply holding my phone, I can't remember the last time I was this happy with such a feature -
Stackoverflow(ed)!!
Lucky to see this today.
Must say, the very next page refresh the site was up.
Don't know if it was really a maintenance or just an alternative message in some cases.
Had this been continued for some more time then many tasks' dev completion dates would have got affected. 😬 -
Just installed Arch for my first time. Using lxde right now but sadly theres now way I can rotate my 2nd monitor (since I have it vertical). What desktop environments do you guys use? Should be lightweight/fast/not many animations and shit.14

So...i have lost the count of the number of posts ranting about W10 sudden restarts because of the updates. Many people lost their valuable work and many more were just annoyed by this occurence...
But it has NEVER happened to me. Every time there was a pop-up message asking me if it was an appropriate time to update. On some occassions i would postpone the same update for numerous times, and it still did not force-restart my laptop.
Question: Is my machine buggy or do people do not know how to set working hours on their machines and postpone their updates?16 -
OK so there's been so many rants about Wanna Cry I sorta wanna cry. But anyway, cannes across this article (great blog IMO, not written by a monkey) has a nice time line of how all this happened and what should be done.

I can't tell if I'm slacking off or now working at a more normal, slower pace....
How much time do you actually spend working vs taking breaks, lunch?
Or maybe how many hours in a day, do you actually spend being productive?4 -
I went to PyOhio, a conference for python in Ohio. I had an amazing time. I’ve never been to a programming event before and it was a revelation. I met and befriended so many amazing, kind, and intelligent people. The talks were amazing, and it was such a great opportunity. I was even guided through my first open source contribution. Great time definitely going again.2

I want to learn so much programming languages, go with so many personal projects.
But I have no time !
Sad Me. who is else have this situation3 -
People sometimes say "you work too much" but the truth is most of the time I'm just coding for fun. It's rare to say, but at least to me, and surely many of you guys my work is one of my hobbies. It sucks that many can't understand that.1

What a week!!
Seriously exhausted. Crunch time to launch a brand new service... Pulling all nighters and stress.
Looking forward to having many beers with the boss to celebrate once it's a done and dusted. -
Second big school project. Designed for at least 2 people. Quite a lot of work for the given time but not impossible to do, as I thought. Oh boy was I wrong.
My partner and I chose a networking project which included setting up a ESXi-Server, a VM (with Windows Server 2008 R2) and a router. We are both not unknowledged so I thought this would be easy-going.
I quickly recognised that my partner liked to spend his time at home rather than actually doing something so I ended up doing nearly everything.
When it came to documenting everything he tried to write something, but it had so many mistakes i had to correct it over and over again.
I asked him multiple times, if we should split and he denied every time and promised to work harder.
End of that story was him being expelled from school because of to many missed lessons and me finishing the project alone. Got a B+ for it.1 -
Why do people not use search engines?
Like there exist so many good search engines and you still ask a question that can be answered by searching 2 minutes on the internet???
You could save yourself and others so much fucking time!!!7 -

Back when I was doing my uni final year project. i was given the choice of either writing codes or writing documentation (graphs, requirement and a whole lot of other madeup bullshit)
I deicide go with coding, sign up with laracast. watch a whole lot of screen cast. and BOOM, coding is easy - I was literally quoting bombastic technical terms like many-to-many relationship to my group mates after 2 videos. (didn't even know what was bootstrap at that time) Thats was when I decide I wanna code for a living. Laravel made me a developer.1 -
If you ever get a chance to refactor a 5/6 years old code , just do it .

In the mood of doing nothing because I have so much shit going on. Anyone knows that feeling?

With unlimited time, I'd put resources into the invention/improvement of a container which can be fed photons and is able to bounce them between mirrors for a long time, like days, and can be released at any time.
With that tech, I would build a delayed choice quantum eraser and set it up so that it produces with many photons an interference pattern or strips pattern by choice, representing a bit of information.
Then i would set up many of those devices in a row so that the results are representing bit strings for arbitrary information.
And I will use this time machine, which can send back information, to win the lottery and other stuff.2 -
Longest goddamn development time ever on this one app I’m working on. Totally got demotivated for many months. Only now just starting to finish it.

Windows - what the fuck! I cannot understand why people WANT to use this - its' buggy, unstable and the user-experience leaves me with the same feeling as when i step on a dog turd barefoot.
I know Linux has been a hard road for many, even a few years back I would do an update and my day would be lost to fixing it. But it's literally made by people in their spare time! Ultra-corp Microsoft fuck it up all the time, with thousands of full time employees!

Making a dev enemy? Quite simple. Asked too many questions for the dev. I wanted to learn and understand his reasons, he thought I was undermining his position. Other time, I forced him to make the source code be consistent with the structure of applications existing code. Dude came, made some commits adding features in places suitable for him, despite the code having clean layer separation, which took me long time to achieve.

My college senior project has become a monster. I look at it and all the work put into between my friend and I and all I can think of is
"This shits fucked I'm glad it's not for sale"
Seriously it works for the most part, but we're up to ~2500 lines of code and about as many headaches and it's still missing so much functionality and has so many security flaws. It's a great proof of concept, but good lord I couldn't imagine building it into a feasible application. It'd take months of work full time!6 -
At work, we have an inventory system that has -get this- NO GUI. Only text. And this software apparently has been used for years... I proposed many times to code something waaay better but each time, since I’m not even 18 and I do cleaning, I’m told that I can’t do it... FML.1

Network management from the terminal is such a pain in the ass on linux! Far too many different config files in many different places, and I have no idea which works with which!
Just now I managed to fuck something up in my RPi's config, so I don't have wifi access anymore and I didn't have time to find its ip address while connected through ethernet :/

WTF!?!? How come? How many problems are likely to appear out of the blue to cause some malfunction?
Every time.
Every time I'm debugging smth others say it's always multiple problems.
Every time I find a single root cause
seriously, guys, how often is it multiple problems. Honestly, I've never had more than a single root cause. And I've cracked a looooot of them.

Sometimes it seems kind of paradoxal to think that us, developers, feel crazy and excited about doing things with bigdata, artificial inteligence and so on, but at the same time we hate to be tracked and studied by large corps - using, many times, equivalent tools

New AltRant release!
Release Notes:
- Transitioned to URLCache-based caching solution for attached images for much faster loading times
- Fixed many layout issues
- Finally added "more info" button in profile screen after 2 years of the feature being absent from the app
- Fixed many different crashes
- Added rant refreshing
- Added double tap to upvote on rants and comments
- Added creation date/time indicators on rants and comments
- Added comment count indicator in post cells in feeds
All users are required to test every aspect of the app.
I worked really hard on all of this to improve every single aspect of this app - from responsiveness to crashes and layout glitches, while also adding many features that were absent for a crazy amount of time! Please enjoy!
The last build will expire in a week from now.4 -
Time estimation of software development should be a product of observation of historical evidence, and many factors that come with it, like:
- What was the language used?
- How many developers worked on it
- How many years each developer has in experience in programming?
- IQ of each developer
- How many kids they have
- The weather
- ...etc
Analyzed by data scientist.
TL;DR
Not something you get by asking developers and interrupting their work, because many are people with superior complexity who often overestimate their capability of solving given problems.
Don't trust them to estimate!4 -
After far too many hours dealing with unproperly behaving click listener and lost references, I just found out that the real problem was with poorly handled async DB access.
Frustrated but happy to find the problem source.
I believe everyone have the same from time to time. At least now I can share my feels with you.
But... time to move forward! -
I’m a bit scared that we as developers will replace ourselves with AI - sure there must be developers for AI and special stuff AI can’t handle at that time, but... I think that not so many developers are needed in the future?5

I just want to burst out how i feel, after that I'll be back to my project in ElectronJS, so bear with my story :)
I observed from a friend of mine....
October will be their 2nd take Thesis project... same project, the only thing is they purchased the software and never understood any of the code. At the defense(Last Tuesday) they were caught, they made excuses. Database diagram that has many tables that are not connected, and only 1 "Many-to-many" relationship without associative table.
I know from the beginning that "she" will fail over and over until the time she really needed my help... She kept her pride, knowing that she is capable of being independent...
To be frank, It's really hard to become an independent person, I always ask advice for revising my code, explaning this function and many more. I'm not saying that its a karma for her. Let her lesson be learned from these past years. -

Its fun, but I have no idea how I manage to mess up in so many ways.

Customer: "Why does this take so long to fix???"

At work we are currently planing to migrate our source code to the latest compiler version. But I don’t think that we will migrate everything from the old version to the new version this time. Today checked my learning time tracker. I have spent already 80 hours for learning angularjs. And I still am not able to write unit test without errors. What the fuck. How many hours more do I need to finnaly be able to write unit tests without any problem?
Like today getting
An error was thrown in afterAll\nSyntaxError: Unexpected token 'export'
and I do not even use afterAll() funciton so they give error somewhere from the inside of libraries. Why they do that? why cannto they give easy to understand error?
Everytime I sit to write unit test for learning, all the time I feel I will not understand. And I am right everytime. Damn. That makes me need to force motivate myself. I want to see results, not sit at the same place so many time.18 -
Not learning web quicker, it's now the most growing thing and there are so many technologies and frameworks and I haven't had enough time to go over them. However, the only problem is some of these frameworks last a little while and die out so it's not all that bad.1

I am working on my website getmeroof.com, and I am using Angular 5. I have used many different packages due to which vendor size is too big now, now Is there any good way to figure out which library or package I am not using, because going through each and every file is taking too much time, any help?13

Is there any advantage of spending more effort and time on an opensource image annotation application?
https://naturalintelligence.github.io/...
I've just done with imglab v2. Two reasons I've developed it is to use it without installation (on web) and integration with open libraries (face++ currently) for fast annotation.
It has more features than above 2 and many are in queue. But as their are many annotation library already available, I'm not able to decide if it is worthy to spend more time on this.
What do you suggest? -

Finally! Oderland supports node.js for all accounts. Huzza! If only I had time to give it a try. Well, soon enough. Unlike many other ranters, I have actually nothing against PHP. It's just that with node.js it's *one* language for the server and client alike :) I like a lot the idea of coding even the server side in javascript.

Story of getting an error :
We thought of an idea and starts to implement it on any language to make the idea work BUT according to the universal law, first code is all about errors.
We tend to solve all those but some errors remains there.
After trying for some time, we pause there and got busy in other stuffs.
After a day or two, when we are busy in something
Suddenly our mind stuck with the solution of that error and we proceed to build rest of the code.
If that error doesn't showed up, what would happen
> Time saved
> Code completed
BUT after in process of solving that error we goes through so many things that actually we learned so many things apart from that error.
SO THANKS TO THE ERROR FOR TEACHING SO MANY THINGS :) -
Many years in the same company waiting for an improvement in my career. Result: role change from Solution Manager to ICT consultant (better before) and Salary increase of 20% (better now). I simply do not understand my company behavior. Happy and Sad at the same time. What do you think? Titles do matter or not?

After spending time trying to work in frameworks and new popular environments on my Windows machine(😵), I now don't hate ASP.NET.
After one too many Yak shaving experiences, I am just so happy that it doesn't break the moment I change something. 😭 -
Actually there are some things:
- Knowing when to stop or switch off from work;
- Too many video calls and meetings;
- No lunch time with team mates;
And many more that I'm sure that I'm forgetting 😅 -
OMG! I just realised one new thing about how people implement Entity Component System library... I'm good to start all over again x) well I don't even remember how many time it happened now ^^"

Imma Jr. Web developer (Ruby on Rails) working here. I've got time at home, so what should i learn?
1. Go for mob app development?
2. Advance my development skills.
(I'll be moving soon to UAE, there are many senior level jobs but not Jr. and more mob app devs jobs than web devs)
Cheeers!1 -
I’m about to finish reading “Bad Blood” by John Carreyou. It’s an amazing story about this Sociopathic young woman managed to dupe so many people with her blood testing startup Theranos which turned out to be a fraud. Low key I’ve been reading too many biographies/novels. It’s about time I focused on my core skills— like coding and docker container orchestration.1

I've been waiting to pull the plug and move to a new company for some time now... The only reason I haven't done it yet is, I don't like too many variables. I am waiting to pay off a loan before going job hunting, but saw an ad this morning which tickled me a little bit... So, I'm job hunting after 1156 again... Only this time, I am in no rush (not to temp fate) and will try and find a better job

Just wondering any of you has seen automated tests in a CI machine? Theyre not reliable enough to be running all the time because many times its just an empty error amd its tedious to investigate and wastes lots of time2

I've been working on a project that involves realtime messaging and i intend to also allow the comments count to update in real-time with websocket.
What i currently do is, when a user post's a comment the socket is notified to refresh the posts list page. (But if many users are commenting simultaneously that would be so many updates per few seconds. )
What's the best way around realtime comment-count updates in webapps.8 -
JS is such open language with too many frameworks and too many libraries. Takes lot of time choosing good code to use.

Another day, another struggle with time zones.
How many fucking helper methods do I need to create for dates and time zones? How many components, pipes and services do I need to wrap just so two datetimes line up? Apparently another one today. At this point I'm ready to accept flat earth theory if it means no more time zones. I'm fucking sold on it if so.
It's not even the time zone that's the issue. It's business needing it formatted, but also offset properly, based on your browser locale, but with points that cross into DST observing time zones of a different locale simultaneously. Sometimes those times are the same, sometimes they're different, sometimes they're different but only in winter. And despite a plethora of libraries to help with these calculations, nothing ever seems to just work out of the box. So here's to another layer of abstraction, because time zones (and DST) are bullshit.1 -
I can make a prediction the same dirty ass bastards that screwed me over the last time this happened will do so again because god forbid I live on like I have so many times before like an ordinary man with some moral improvement no no
That messes with their circular walk into oblivion without life2 -
It's been a long time since I visited devRant website. So many changes and the UI feels so good. I preferred web version than the mobile app version now.

There are so many options to pimp my linux system. Is there any point in time, where I will be finished customizing/prettifying my linux? I highly doubt.
BTW.. what is the best way to backup the whole config? (color schemes, themes, gnome extensions)2 -
Imagine how many less assignments would all students get if the teachers had to spend same time checking their assignments as they spent completing them

The struggle when you use fscanf and once you used & many times and this one time you forgot & and the whole program gets Access Violation :(
&tab[i] instead of tab[i] -
All Java devs are so proud about their website.
But all of them have too many ads. They all look like straight from 1990, but at the same time, they say „HTML/CSS“ is easy.5 -
Darn!
It's simply the Parkinson's Law guys, it says that 'work' expands as until it reaches it's deadlines (if any), so for indefinite time, I guess I'll plan and admire many projects but COMPLETE NONE!
DEADLINES ARE NECESSARY,
else I'll keep kn moving from one project to another without any plans of completion :3 -
Working from home today.
I have been in this role for many months now. Not a single ticket with specs.
Question in my email inbox
"Estimates" for current ticket.
Without specs, well some time I guess. -
What sucks in wfh setup is there are so many attendance to fill out. Then there’s this tracker that I forgot to time out, then updated it the other day getting the current date time it’s like I work overnight lols

Every time someone asks too many things to get the job. Like knowledge of commonly used platforms yet they expect you to know many of the fashionable technologies like node, angular etc. All these for junior developers. And all they want in the end is to make you make payed plugins yourself instead of just purchasing the existing ones.
This makes me thinking, is it me as just an average web developer that needs to learn everything, or is it just them that they just want to pay less to do much more?1 -
In your labour time at job, how many hours or how much time do you spend searching information in Internet? And what pages do you usually look? (stackoverflow, coderanch?)1

Hurray for the many remnants of.organiEd crime and the money laundering organizations and operations that operate for show part of the time and that have gradually been transitioned to trash cans housing the refuse of the previous living cruel and corrupt generation of selfish godless pricks that made up the basic human unit of such enterprises heh14
