So, in my spare time I run a little helper business that teaches children/teenagers how to program.
Theres a new kid that's been coming for around about a month, and I swear the kid is a programming deity.
He picked programming and more importantly developing remarkably quickly.
Long story short, I paid for him to go to a Hackathon in LA and he now has more business contacts than me.19 -
Year 2013
- Trying this thing called Bitcoin
- Setup wallet in spare USB drive
- Buy 0.5 BTC (couldn’t afford more)
- Forgot about it
Year 2016
- Remembered I had bought BTC
- Looking like crazy for my USB drive
- Found it!
- Insert it into PC
- only one file in it
- essay_blah_blah_<sisters name>.doc
- poof, gone for ever14 -
I remember back at study I had this friend who hated windows just as much as I did.
Then, for a project, he HAD to run windows on his laptop.
He was very fucking angry about that but did this:
Installed a Linux (debian?) vm (virtualbox) on his laptop and gave it all the spare resources.
Then he ran it fullscreen.
He was still using windows technically but at boot up he booted up the Linux vm and he just worked with that one.
Teacher wasn't pleased but he couldn't do much since the fucker ran windows on his laptop as instructed xD13 -

Surprisingly, this was one of the top recruiters in my country. Never knew, MNCs can be so so inefficient for such simple tasks.
Start-ups are way better in this regard. Latest tech, small community, minimal bureaucracy and a lot of respect and things to learn.15 -
Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"36 -
Worst Person you Interviewed?
I interview many developers at my company. Today, I interviewed someone who seemed fairly qualified. Then I spotted a large gap I his resume. When I enquirer about the gap, he disclosed that he had served prison time for pedophilia. He further disclosed that as a condition of his release, he had to be supervised when using a computer.
As we are a gov/medical company, we are not allowed to hire people with a criminal record. He begged me but I told him that it was again company policy. I felt sorry for him not finding any work and being forced to beg, but I also had a knot in my stomach over the details his crime that he elaborated on.
Anyway, he scored 0 out of 10 on my interview scale.
Right after him, I interviewed another developer who seemed great on paper but when I proved further, he didn’t know jack about JavaScript, despite his resume show him to be a “jQuery expert”!
So, I asked him what he does in his spare time and how me keeps his development skill/knowledge up to date. He said:
“...no, I don’t study this shit in my spare time... I’m not a facking need!!!”
I stopped the interview right there. I might sware here on DV, but it my office I keep it civil & professional. So I certainly do not appreciate it when a diaper wearing, snotty nosed, junior wanker swares in my offices to merely protect his willful ignorance and shows pathetic pride instead of humility. That interview comes to an end immediately!
The pedo got a 0 out of 10, but this brat scored a -5 out of 10!!!
I have so many interview stories I could tell you...

Learned Python by working 6 year with it. The first tool I made in my spare time was a porn playback helper.6

One of my colleague's monitor got damaged. While the service guys took the monitor for repair, she sat free. When the manager asked her to connect to a spare monitor and resume work, she asked how could she? As all her work was saved in previous monitor.6 -
- just do your job. Close this ticket already and go to the next one
- It's just a 1 minute job.. Don't build scripts for things that simple!
- Look, we don't have time to spare for coffee breaks. Stop wasting your time on scripting!
- netikras, the IST shift fucked things up again. I need you to do your magic and clear those alerts
- netikras, there are 20 tickets waiting to be investigated. Either your coleagues spend 2 hours on them or you do your magic in 2 minutes, as always..
- netikras, please share your scripts with your team
- netikras, I have nominated you for the Star Award for your script
- netikras, here's the star award and the financial prize. Those are nice swarovskies you've picked for your wife! Good choice!
- Since our team has lots of spare time now, I urge you all to attend X, Y and Z trainings. Trainings and Certification expenses are covered
A very similar scenario has just happened in 2 last workplaces of mine. In both cases I was the one to build the script despite my management's requests to stop wasting time and resources on them.
When I see what is wrong and take some actions to right those wrongs, when superiors build roadblocks for me claiming it's not worth it and in the end I still build my solutions and become the most efficient person/team in the whole department -- that right there is what boosts my ego to the sky and above!! It proves I am actually on the right track. It proves that I in fact have a better understanding than those who should have it.
It just makes me tick!
Looking for another adventure like that :) With more power to change things this time7 -
devRant is really cool for us students because it gives us an insight into the real world of developers, something which a lot of schools simply don't give you. I would recommend anyone studying software or hardware (be it at school or in spare time) to get involved.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus4 -
I've been doing programming as a hobby since I was 10 years old, I've always found my teachers are good at IT but not that good in Computer Science and programming, this year a new teacher joined the IT department who has actual experience in programming etc.
Our school uses two services, a rewards system which for some reason can also show our timetable, and another service for displaying our homework. In my spare time I made a project which combined these two services and showed it to him. As the first teacher with actual programming experience he was impressed and now I get to 'pitch' my project to the teachers higher up.
TLDR; It's good to have a good teacher -
So I teach a Lego mindstorms class to 5th graders for fun on my spare time. My other classes the kids usually seek me out for any programming questions but this one class of rambunctious boys would always say they're fine when I offered to help and then when they thought I wasn't looking would ask the male teacher or would pretend to listen to my explanation to not hurt my feelings. Finally my co worker told the guys "you know guys she went to school to program she does this for a living full time when she's not here. **room goes silent** In fact she's way better at programming then me". The whole room the boys mouths were open and one kid actually said noooo. We blew those kids minds. Most quiet day of class we've ever had after that.11

I saw a colleague of mine cry when I was undertaking my first internship.
Asked them why they were crying and i found out they were very frustrated at a task she had to do periodically, which required repetitive work.
I wrote a script to automate the task without being requested to, since I had some spare time and when I told them they hugged me and thanked me a lot.13 -
So yesterday, literally just hours after i basically said on somebody elses rant "friends are overrated," i ran into a friend i havent seen in over a year and we ended up chatting for an hour after she gave me a ride home. I was in such a good mood after and I realized its the first socializing ive done outside of talking to work people or my partner in over a month. I like to spend most of my time alone, and since i discovered coding i try to spend every spare second writing code, but it turns out a social life is actually really important 😯😯3

Do you have a spare usb phone cable?
I have but I'm using it to charge my phone
Do you have a spare laser pointer for my presentation?
Sorry, I don't
Do you have a spare mouse?
No :)
Sometimes things become a little weird
Do you have a spare keyboard?
No sorry. :/
Do you have a spare monitor?
:/
Do you have a spare computer?
what?
Do you have a spare mac?
>:(
Do you have two spare computers and one printer for each? Would be nice for the conference that we are going to hold tomorrow if someone need to print.
What's wrong with you people. I'm just a developer, not a fucking warehouse9 -
Radio Shack store closed near my house. Had a huge fire sale. Electric circuit components were 90% off.
My wife thought I'd gone insane when I got home with two huge bags full of LEDs, resistors, switches, IR sensors, photocells, capacitors, bridge rectifiers, a spare breadboard, a pair of helping hands, etc.
My only regret is that I didn't catch the fire sale in time to grab all their Arduinos.3 -
My old employer used to used a highly complex people management system, made up of around fifteen or so different tools and packages. Apparently this had been the case for decades, so in my spare time, I wrote an entirely bespoke, extensible HR web application that could be easily modified without changing the code. It even supported the weird spider web management structure.
I took it to my area manager, who pushed it up the chain. Apparently the country representative liked it a lot, so decided to bring me on board for an implementation and test case. Fast forward a few months, and people are singing praises. I get a huge promotion, with a sizeable pay bump to match.
Sadly, most of my country was sold out to another org, who decided pretty much straight off to make 90% of us redundant. Last I heard, though, my app is now in use in almost every operating country around the world. Not bad for something I wrote in my spare time.
I'm waiting for them to need modifications, because I never had time to complete the documentation...4 -
got a mail 10 minutes after I finished a 10h shift that my contract won't be refreshed after 4 years ripping my ass off for this fucked up organization. apparently not because of lack of competence but of personal reasons. that's what you get for not being a sheep and having an opinion. my (ex)boss didn't even have the balls to say it to my face.
fuck them! I don't need people like that around me - neither in my spare time nor at work - and I wish them all the worst.
happy holidays motherfuckers!5 -
It's a Sunday, playing around with code/servers/config stuffs and decided to give Arch another try! Downloaded Apricity OS (Yes, I still love beautiful interfaces I don't have to fully configure), realized I didn't have any spare discs so went looking for a USB flash drive.
Seriously. Those FUCKERS are always around when you don't need them.
But ohhhhh, the FUCKING SECOND YOU NEED THEM, THEY ARE NO-FUCKING-WHERE TO BE MOTHERFUCKING FOUND.
Well, there goes my FUCKING plans for today.14 -
I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT when people say, "Can you look into it, in your spare time ?"
Why should I spend my spare time looking at company stuff ? Just WHY ? If you want me to look at it, then FUCKING PAY ME FOR IT!!!5 -
My biggest personal challenges as a dev are these two:
1. I tend to work too much (by choice), which impacts my personal spare time heavily.
2. I tend to not let loose of a problem until it is solved. This often results in longer work hours or me not taking brakes...4 -
So I found a HDD in a trash bin, plugged it to a USB, and I found this while browsing shit
Either its previous owner is hiding something or is just a lonely man and promptly forgot where his ahem... interesting stuff was stored.
I only backuped what I need and erased the damn thing btw, its now a spare drive16 -
Are you ready to offer oil changes and spare parts for your software you create? And stop implementing planed obsolescence in your app you swine?
Because the European Union voted today yes for the "Right to Repair". 👍
https://independent.co.uk/life-styl...22 -
I am so fucking jealous of all you assholes. Oh look at me, i am a full stack developer and yada yada. I have the time and patience to do whatever app or game i want and show it off.
Fuck, you.
If i get home, i am glad i can stay awake for dinner and play a little game before i go to bed and my next day starts.
I have ideas, i need to do some self study to get all parts of those ideas going, but i fucking can't.
I have no motivation and no energy to spend when i get home, and even the weekends rarely i will feel like proframming jack shit. When or how do you even do it?! It's driving me up the wall and it makes me feel useless.
Stop being better then me in every possible way!29 -
Bought a second hand phone because my current one drains too fast (battery).
Flashing through the recovery doesn't work, I need Odin.
Only windows installation I have left (spare laptop I hardly use) crashes every time I boot up.
Linux version of an alternative is downloadable but the site gives a shit ton of errors.
Well fuck me sideways right now.19 -
I have a dream
That we will live in a world where we can download Xcode, Visual Studio (not the xamarin bullshit) and Android Studio, all on the same machine, under one OS, without any hassle, and live a peaceful life, till our death...18 -
I think having the wrong job can really bring down the quality of life.
My friend has to drive two hours each way to get to and from work. That's four hours wasted commuting.. and his job is service desk agent.
What are the consequences, you ask? He never has a spare second to talk to me, he's quickly developing gray hairs and he has no time awareness.
Having the wrong job is unhealthy and results in a cascade of bad side effects.. When most of your day involves work-related things, that's just wrong. There is no Yin-Yang there. I know because my work life is somewhat balanced.12 -
I'm only two step far from having an intelligent house, just missing finish my own domotic system and then a bot to control, music, TV, and electricity.
Let's do the list:
1.- Kodi on TV ✔
2.- MPD on a hidden PC inside my old grandpa's stereo ✔
3.- a small data server to provide music, movies and series to Kodi and mpd ✔
(This is something that im trying to do with spare PC's running Linux on my free time)
MPD on a PIII (500mhz + 512mb RAM)
Kodi on a dual core (2.80ghz +3gb RAM)
Server on a opteron (1.80ghz + 1.5gb RAM)3 -
I work in an unrelated field, and code in my spare time as I'm just starting out. Have to pay tbe bills somehow, amirite?
So my boss has installed cameras "for security", and uses them to monitor staff on a regular basis. A couple months ago he pulled me aside with a piece of paper. My "second written warning" (next step prior to dismissal) however I haven't received any other disciplinary action.
The warning contained 10 points, all of which made reference to observances over the damn cameras.
Please keep in mind -- I have been an overachieving empleyee for over 5 years, and friends with the bosses the whole time. My boss was in my wedding party.9 -
This one time I developed some useful plugins and a command line interface for the platform we built at work.
Then when it was done I thought it had some good value so I created a pull request to donate it to the platform. That same day I got 3 complaints that my pull request did not conform to conventions and that there was no ticket for it and they complained about the fact that it made their jobs harder.
It was in fact the last time I developed something for work in my spare time.1 -
Fucking finally. I got a job... No one is probably gonna give a shit because it's your average governmental drone position but I wanted this for a very long time...
** drum roll **
Customs and immigration officer!!!
Thats right! Deported! Deported! Deported! *hot chick* welcome to our country!
Best thing is... Now every project can be a side project... I can chillax and build software in my spare time... I love it.9 -
I have a VPS for under a year from Digital Ocean. No idea what to do with it.
Specs:
20GB Disk
512MB RAM
Debian 8.9 x64
A spare domain from Namecheap
IP: 127.0.0.1
Ideas?42 -
Super excited to get my first ML project on, been working on this on - off for a couple of years. Now that I had sometime to spare could get it completed :) And along the way learned a lot of things as well :)
Let me know what you guys think.

Dev: So we need around $50-100 a month to activate and use some key services that would greatly reduce our backend complexity. Would this fit into our budget? Actually, we've never really discussed in general what sort of tech budget we have to work with...
Management: UNTIL WE HAVE SUSTAINABLE REVENUE, OUR TECH BUDGET IS 0
FullStackClown: 0? Are you serious? You can't spare a few hundred dollars TOTAL over the next 3 months until our next round of funding clears?
Management: ALSO WE ARE REALLY GOING TO NEED YOUR HELP TO FIND PRODUCT MARKET FIT FROM THE TECH SIDE
FullStackClown: Oh no... we've gotten to the classic point where they think tech is the thing that will solve their problems... abandon ship...7 -
I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3
-
so my parents live close and my dad said his router died. I told him I had a spare. I loaded it dd-wrt on there and next time I went over there he asked about opening a port. I said I could do it for him. wouldn't let me touch it. he believes he is the computer genius and that I would brake it.
funny part is I work on servers for huge companies like Wells Fargo, Ally Bank and tons of others. I can configure a rack mount router but he doesn't trust me to touch a little crappy home linksys router lol.
no matter how smart you are they never want to admit their kid knows more about tech than they do.4 -
So it happened that a roll of my office chair broke. Since the ordering process in our company is a nightmare and takes forever AND my employer is too cheap to buy enough adequate replacement, I had to draw and print a spare part myself...9
-
"Hey Jamcris11,
Be apart of our cool programming project?"
"Hell yeah, sign me up".
Three weeks later.
Proceeds to me being the only person contributing to the project in anyway (despite having a full time job meaning little spare time).
Guy who invited me in the first place just plays fucking Minecraft all day (he doesn't have a job or college,) puts no effort into the project at all.22 -
When you are into Dota2 trying to forget everything after stressful day and your manager messages you if you have spare 10 minutes to discuss next weeks' upcoming tasks.
Hell NO!! Let me play and chill.5 -
Job ad: Must have large amount of experience working in a completely unstructured environment, be hyper innovative and be willing to work HARD and have a PRODUCT MINDSET!
Translation: Management doesn’t know what they want and even if they did they are completely incompetent at communicating what that is. You will be accountable for reading their minds and coming up with something that makes them look good. This task is impossible so you are expected to sacrifice every spare second of your life in vain pretending it is possible. If you do somehow achieve it you will not be given any credit due to your “product mindset”.3 -
What do you guys do on off time? More code? Gaming?
I mostly spend weekends with my girlfriend and away from code. Helps clear my head for the coming week.20 -
PSA: RAM Disks are amazing.
So, I've just discovered something which I haven't really thought of before-- RAM disks.
Pretty self explanatory, a disk which uses RAM.
Obviously SSDs are fast but HOLY FUCK THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!
IT IS INSTANT-FUCKING-TANIOUS.
Imagine an SSD stuffed with caffeine and then given steroids. It is wonderful.
If you spare RAM I must recommend you at least try it:

First proper software dev job, very naive, tasked to write a 'soft switch' for a well known companies set of production lines, depending on what product was being produced at a particular time. Wrote it weeks before the deadline, forgot about it, night before I had a quick review and realised I had missed half the spec aaaand it was going live the following day. Shitting myself I pulled an all nighter, drove to the office at 5am, managed to get it done with minutes to spare for 9am. To my knowledge it's still being used today. I left shortly after that.

What’s everyone do in their spare time? I chase and track storms! Nothing makes you feel alive like a tornado a few miles in front of you!
No tornado on the picture posted, but it’s an active storm with capabilities of forming 2-4 inch hail.12 -
Clicking "share" on directory in Windows Explorer, digging through config panel, fidgeting with network discovery options, toggling password protection, digging through account management, jumping over a chair 3 times to channel my inner Bill Gates, checking directory permissions, sacrificing 7 virgin unicorns, go into lusrmgr.msc, curse various gods, install CIFS1.0 protocol, reboot computer, disable encryption, checking registry, trying to summon Steve Ballmer using the blood of a bald goat and sweat-scented candles... 5 hours.
Install Ubuntu on spare SSD, mount Windows NTFS drive, start SMB daemon and set up samba users... 15 minutes.12 -
Participated in a hackathon two weeks ago.
All 3 winners were established startups or had already developed product. All they did was, come, sit, eat, spare time and pitch.
Did organizer mistakenly named it HACKATHON 🤔 ???
Though, made it to TOP 10 and got incubated at incubation center of organizer2 -
Parked the car in a parking lot 15 mins before job interview. Plenty of time to spare.
Go to pay for parking.
Ticket machine doesn't accept cards. Fine, I have notes.
Ticket machine doesn't accept notes. Shit, I need to go get change quick.
FUCKING FUCKER DOESN'T ACCEPT £1 COINS WELL WHAT THE FUCK TO YOU ACCEPT THEN YOU FUCKING FUCK I'M GOING TO BE LATE FOR MY JOB INTERVIEW OR GET A £80 FUCKING PARKING FINEundefined fucking parking fucking job interview fucking pound coins interview went quite well actually9 -
NO FUCKING WAY YOU ARE GONNA PAY SOMEONE THE EQUIVALENT OF TWO MONTHS WHAT I MAKE TO DO SOMETHING I CAN DO IN A FUCKING WEEKEND BECAUSE "I HAVE SO MUCH TO DO ALREADY AND COMPANY STUPID POLICY DOESN'T ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO BE CONTRACTED AS FREELANCER ON THEIR SPARE TIME!!
HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT TO MY FACE YOU STUPID COCK SUCKER! I BET YOU CANT EVEN SUCK A FUCKING DICK PROPERLY STUPID FUCK!!!!!!!4 -
Best joke of the day is always reality. Im working in one of the richest companies in the world.
The spare part stock is tracked on an excell sheet and changes in stock filled by hand on paper.6 -
So this JUST happened.
I do what I've been doing since its release, that is go through devRant in my spare time.
My girlfriend is right here working on her project and notices me looking intently into my phone, unaware of what I'm up to and literally snatches my phone asking me which girl i was messaging and checks it to see devRant open! The look on her face after that was priceless :D
EVEN NOW as I type this Rant she looked at me and asked "Who is that you're messaging? Your 'girlfriend'?" xD
God bless devRant xD2 -
Friend: Do you have a cable you can spare, so that I can charge my phone?
Me: Unless you have a type-c (port), yes.
Friend: No, I have Samsung.
Me: 😂😂😂😂
Friend: 😅7 -
My room fan broke last week, and they were sold out everywhere.
So i build one myself (last rant), but after a while it just blew hot air.
So after some work I have this :) Now it even has RGB :')

I look after servers, softwares, vendors and write code too. I am also learning datascience in spare time. Suddenly I found that I am giving no time to family and friends.6
-
After working 3 years in my current job and my boss hating anything to do with unit testing etc, I used my spare time to refactor our Makefiles to allow for the creation of unit and integration tests. I technically didn't tell my boss about it, so my heart was in my throat when he Skyped me with 'what did you change in ...'?
After having bashed any workflow with testing in it, I showed him the new workflow and automatic testing in Jenkins and he was actually enthousiastic, just like all other employees! I was hailed a hero in the R&D department, after all this time we can finally write universal tests. :D7 -
Why do people like hiring managers at companies seem to think that because you are paid to code you spend your spare time coding?
You don't expect a surgeon to operate all day then go home and randomly start cutting people up, so don't expect a code surgeon to spend all day coding to go clock off the start hacking away at shit either!10 -
Sent email to my parents this morning telling them to contact me by email since the Pie update broke my One Plus 6 (when I tried to reroot it but got a bootloop and restoring from TWRP screwed it up even more somehow) so restoring it.
First response from my dad: you can use my spare S9...
Yes he has a spare because he got it in a 2 for 1 deal... but I'm thinking uhhh..... It's not like I physically dropped the phone and cracked the screen... (like he did to his late 2 phones)... I'm 99% sure I can restore somehow... Like I did last time (a few months ago)7 -
I finally got a job at a tech company (although it's not a tech job) with a very good work/life balance.
Therefore, I plan on getting more serious about properly learning how to program in my spare time, also because, being a tech company, programmers are all over the place and are generally willing to talk about code.
I must say that while job hunting, devRant has been very useful to me since it allowed me to understand what kind of environment I'd like to work in. So far, the first few weeks of work have been great.
Ah, and the view from the office is unbeatable.7 -
My friend dropped her phone and it doesn't turn on anymore, but she has a dual-SIM spare phone. So the problem didn't seem too bad at first. I told her I'd help her with the backup restoration, set everything up on her new (old) phone.
After 30mins of trying to restore the backup from her old phone and moving the SIM card to the new phone...
"But I didn't have a backup and the SIM card tray isn't working. Can you also help me recover my 10 000 pictures and songs?"
I guess I'm done here7 -
What really helps me is knowing electronics, having a solid understanding of maths and experimenting around with computers and hardware in my spare time.
At some point you start to see programming as being more than just "kreating" (as Karlie Kloss would say) an "app".
I see programming as pushing your machine to go beyond its seemingly narrow boundaries. -
May 2020, for me, was still a massively shit month. All of my tech has eaten some amount of shit:
- Spare PC: Board and last spare PSU up in literal smoke all at once.
- PS3: Suddenly rejects *just* the OEM HDD. Also refuses all CFW for seemingly no reason despite being hacked.
- Xbox One: External HDD is having more and more corrupt reads and is taking longer and longer to serve data.
- Wii: Nearly ate shit as the OS disappeared mid-game for fucking no reason but thanks to my 5-year-ago forethought, saved. (God bless pre-boot homebrew menus)
- Phone: grabbed it to read an overheat warning with cold-ass hands, screen exploded.
- Desktop: Literally just now, PSU and possibly GPU fucking died mid-game.
Anything else? You still got like 4 days, you still got time to fucking kill me, May, you fucking bitch8 -
Always when I have some excessive amount of spare time, something always gotta go wrong and waste 90% of that available time for fucks sake.
Wanted to install raw antergos on my new usb for pure chrooting into it, but it gets stuck on preparing the disk and there seems to be no solutions to it.6 -
That moment you solved something without Stack overflow and/or the official Docs... That realisation made my day ☺
Feeling more and more like a medior! (I am a junior) I might even program in my spare time again! It has been a while... I can't wait 😍😍3 -
Summer is about to start.
I want to learn more over the break. I think I found the best way for me to learn. Apps. I use sololearn and Enki.
I know I'm cheap, but I dont have the money to spare on udemy.
Has anyone found any better apps though?21 -
Sometimes, I really fucking hate Windows.
Having trialled Linux for a week on a spare HDD, I wanted to move to a proper dual boot with Windows on my SSD, and I decided I may as well downgrade to Windows 7 at the same time (10 had started to really annoy me).
Booting into the initial USB yielded an unresponsive mouse and keyboard. Hmm, not a great start. Turns out the Windows install USB doesn't like the rear USB ports or the wireless mouse. Strange but plugged in a spare USB mouse into the front and could install Windows.
This install was very unhappy about not having SP1 - to the point where I couldn't even install the network drivers so I could download SP1. Fine, I just downloaded an ISO with SP1 on my Mac.
Then I discovered that you can only really make a Windows USB with Windows. But I've just removed both my Windows and Linux partitions so I can reinstall them ...
After hours of searching and trying to create a bootable USB on my Mac, I finally give up and install a trial of Parallels. So I ended up using the same ISO to install a VM of Windows on my Mac, so I can create a bootable USB, so I can install Windows on my desktop. Well done Microsoft ...
And then I needed to install various drivers for the install to be even remotely useable.
To top it all off: Linux just worked. The keyboard and wireless mouse worked when installing. I didn't need to do any additional set up to be able to use it all. It can even use all 3 monitors, rather than just the 2 that Windows recognises for some bizarre reason.
Thanks to Windows being special, I've lost a day of productivity 😡16 -
Dear intern, if you really really have the urge to use fucking spaces for indentation because it let's you feel like being some Google hipster, then PLEASE AT LEAST REMOVE THE SPARE ONES WHEN YOU FUCKING COPY PASTE CODEBLOCKS!!!1!!1111!
I'm perfectly OK if people wanna use spaces if they use it in an OCD-proof manner.
Nah, let's be honest: Spaces are a filthy way to indent stuff. Tabs are in a lot ways superior and if an editor can't render tabs correctly, the editor is a piece of worm puke.2 -
Boi did I forget what a horror is to deal with Wndows...
I just wanted to shutdown a laptop to replace the SSD and a wifi card. Prepared everything, clicked on the [start] and there were only "Update and *" options. Wha the hell I thought, I could spare a few minutes. It's just a software update - should not take long!
Little did I know...
That was 45 minutes ago and It's still shutting down. And I'm just sitting with that screwdrived in my hand, looking at that blue screen and waiting. I feel stupid
UPDATE: I gave up. Long-pressed the POWER button. que sera, sera, right?
Lights go out. I press POWER again to boot it back up (forgot to save smth else). And it boots up back to the "SHUTTING fucking DOWN" AGAIN!!!23 -

I have that desire (which is with me since I was kid) to build a drone (Quad-copter) and control it with my hand gestures.
So, I decided to start with it in my spare time, I am planning to buy a Raspberry PI and other materials to build the drone, and create a Gesture Recognizer app using OpenCV.
Wish me some luck !6 -
Gorgeous SE215 got its cable broken? Thanks god I have a spare cable they call “Apple Earpods” and I can solder!8

I always found this video a must-watch for game-developers.
It's a long video, and he kinda sounds like a fanboy at times (especially in the beginning).
But he makes some great points about the modern gaming industry.
So if you're a game developer, or someone interested in games, and you have 30 minutes of spare time; here's an interesting video:

I grew up on a farm in western KS. My parents bought PCs when I was in grade school. First was a trs80 , then an Epson Equity 1+, where I built a spare key for it, and built levels in willy for my brother to beat. Then a 486 and pentium which I broke often. I ended up working at the same store in college for extra cash. While I'm an adverage developer, I do on and make decent $$. I still help them out with keeping their PCs running, for moms sewing, and dads Linux box. I figure I owe them for their investment in me. They gave me the tools to figure out what I want to do with my career and my life.2

Our neighbors need more toilet paper badly. I wonder if they’ll go door to ask asking people to spare a few squares next 🤔3

Been studying front end development on my spare time for the past 8 months and tomorrow I got a interview for a position at a company as a junior Dev.
Even if I don't get it, it tells me that I'm on the right direction.
One can change their life by putting in some work.
Not a rant, I know but I'm so happy I felt like sharing. Soon I'll hopefully have some rants to share ;)8 -
Pro Tip: If you spent all day debugging and shit's still not working, go get yourself an oversized, fully functional enter-key-pillow. Your code will probably still not work, but now you can at least spare your keyboard and smash that enter-key with all your built up rage1

Fucking A.I. resume filter bots.
As if tech interviews weren't hard enough, I have to fill my resume with keywords to get past a bot! Every damn application and cover letter has to be unique.
And when I get past a bot, a hiring manager replies with "Sorry, you seem to have more experience with Typescript than JavaScript, and we can't take that risk."
It's the same.damn.language.
Yes, I spend my spare time with C and Python. Why does that say "unsuitable candidate" instead of "versatile"??!!
$#*%!?&@ tech industry.
Take your "Good luck with your future endeavors" and stuff it up your ass.1 -
Whoever said green tea helps you lose weight was right.
I accidentally spilled some on my laptop, and I can't work properly now because I've to replace the keyboard and spare parts are expensive (at least for my model).
And it'll take 3 weeks to arrive!
So with the stress of projects and deadlines piling up, yup, I'm losing weight alright!
Green tea !FTW3 -
* No raise after one year, even that I don't earn that much
* Working in the oldest project
* Everyday I have to make quick fixes, usually requested by leader
* No spare time to rewrite shitty code - always something have higher priority (like doing some tasks that I shouldn't do, just because I had no tasks for next sprint)
* Got feedback from leader that I "hack" too much instead of writing code properly (see third dot)
* Every company around pays more and have more up-to-date stack
* The only guy that wanted to change stuff and use more generic approaches from other teams just threw resignation paper6 -
I wanna make online friends that program too, I would love to just sit in a call or sumn and just talk and program and ask for help or vice versa if needed. But I'm that person who also rarely already talks to his current IRL and Online friends that dont program. And can never and doesnt like to spare my own time to talk to others. I'm quite frankly screwed 😂5

Italian gaming community is a shit place. In my spare time I make website for minecraft servers or whatever game you want, but I found out that people prefer to have a bad website but pay less instead of pay more for a decent website.
P.S. I'm not saying that I'm the best italian web designer.2 -
Need some advice -
I have over one month spare time before joining the company. I have always wanted to learn an instrument but I'm also 'thinking' of joining a gym but I don't have any fantasies for big biceps and I am a big time foodie.
I have read that learning new instruments would help you in critical and out of the box thinking which is a definite plus while programming. While joining a gym would be a good way to keep myself fit in this hectic world of programming.
I'm torn in choosing between these two options. Which one should I join as a developer? What would my fellow devs suggest? 🤔22 -

2. Plan new skills to learn every year
3. Stackoverflow is your best friend
4. Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions...
5. ... but make sure not to ask too many of them
6. Don't get burned on one single topic, find other projects to work in parallel or even better work on side projects in your spare time -
I spent ALL of friday trying to get some code to work (some awful MS Analytic Server stuff). I usually finish at 6pm. I was getting very frustrated, as it's for a project that I've made some big promises on.
So at 5:30, I started throwing random ideas at it.
At 5:58, it worked.
My weekend has been a lot more relaxed than it otherwise might have been. Weirdly, this has been the second time in a month that I've got something working with minutes to spare on a Friday.1 -

Wow - I've actually got a few minutes to spare on my home project! -
Thoughts prior to feedback meeting, about how it's gonna go.
---------------------------------------------------------
Scenario one:
Supervisor: The shit is this? You call this a research work? Get the fuck out of here! You're fired and even your unborn kids are banned from coming into this institute ever again!
Me: *walks out sobbing* (dunno how one can walk out of a zoom meeting, but this is imaginary so who's counting?)
Scenario two:
S: Umm, good work. I just don't think it's presentable. Maybe come back in like a few weeks when you actually polish this into a "real scientific work".
Me: *sobs after meeting. Starts preping for seppuku cuz no idea where I'm headed with this work any further*
Scenario three:
S: nah man. This is no good. Let's start from the bottom. Like, start data collection from the beginning or something.
Me: *sobs and commits seppuku on the meeting.* (I just have a pen tho. Hope it has the same effect as a sword)
---------------------------------------------------------
There are other scenarios, but they all end up in me sobbing and/or committing seppuku in/after the meeting so yeah the drama is running high right now.11 -
If I had to audit my current code I'd definitly stick a cactus up my arse shouting in the mirror:

My phone starts dying gently but surely. Since last week I cannot use my jack input anymore, and thus can't listen to music in the car. I also compose music, and was eager to listen to my latest production (for reviewing purposes) in the car. In my frustrated search for a spare device with a jack, I found a pile of blank CDs instead. "Aw yiss, I can haz music in my car" I thought with a huge relieved grin.
I grabbed a CD, looked at my pc, and my grin faded instantly to an "oh" of disappointment: I deliberately did not install a CD drive in my computer.
Not losing hope, I grabbed my Mac and tried inserting my blank disk in the drive. "Clunk, clunk", the cd won't go in. "Ah silly me, I replaced that drive with a SSD". So I went looking for that spare cd drive.
After I found it, its SATA power interface was smaller than regular SATA devices, and any connectors I tried were too big. "Hmpf, ok, I'm desperate, let's remove that SSD in my Mac". So I went grabbing some screwdrivers, removed the cover lid underneath the computer, and removed two screws from the SSD casing, allowing me to lift the unit up, disconnect the cable, plug in the cd drive, flip the Mac carefully, turn it on... And burn my CDs, and finally I resetted everything back to normal, carefully removing the cd drive and closing the computer.
What one doesn't do in frustration...2 -
A site I manage in my spare time with a couple thousand normal users was getting attacked by a Chinese botnet. All the requests were coming from only two subnets. Easy to block. Feels like this was only the vanguard. Prelude to the real attack. I'm thinking about moving the site to its own server, so it won't affect my other sites. There at least if it gets kneeled, it'll only be that site.6

I'm a developer, but also a father of 2 kids. I love spending time with them, but sometimes I also like to work on my side projects. And besides that, after a long day of work, even if I have spare time, I also like to lay down on the couch and watch Netflix.
How do you other full time developer / parents out there cope with your own personal projects?9 -
It's dangerous to be curious. And have time to spare.

To all the cheap bastards out there, especially those who are here for a long time, become a ++ supporter and help to keep devRant running! (Okay that might was a bit dramatic, but still, keep it running as it is)
It was mentioned by @dfox here: https://devrant.com/rants/1467574/... that the numbers of the suporters program have gone down slightly and that devRant still looses it's creators @dfox and @trogus money.
If you're working in IT, you can't tell me, that you can't spare this little! Don't be cheap.
It's a different story, if you're still in school. I can even understand, that you don't have a dime to spare as a student. But when you're working (fulltime) as dev, tester, pm, recruiter, whatever and receiving a salary, then you can afford it.
So come on! Girls, guys, this is our home. It's awesome! Show your appreciation and hit that suporter button. It's a tiny amount every month, but if we all pull together, we can cover their server costs! Become a ++ suporter.
(And don't say we should create a crowd funding campaign, where you donate once, otherwise we'll be in the same situation in a few months, a bit every month on the other hand helps in the long run!)6 -
Does anyone else have that project that they work on in there spare time? Well mine was a Pokemon MMO because I'm not a games developer and found it a really nice challenge/break from normal work. It's almost ready to be played but it's sad that it'll never be released. I mean I could recreate all of the sprites and game mechanics but that wasn't what I originally set out to do.4

Oh yeah 🙌🏼 So here is the other thing! Many of us work on side projects where we build awesome stuff in our spare time. We don't get much publicity, userbase or conversions as we are not marketing people. So go ahead and write short desc about your product along with website link if you have any. So, I'm supposed to do a project in Haskell that is due next week. It's a group project and it's me and 2 colleagues. Unfortunatelly one of them had to drop college because of some personal problems. I feel bad for him.
The thing is, the other one has no clue what Haskell is. I mean, he has no clue how programming is. He doesn't even know what an array is, like, wtf.
Sure, I can do the work all by myself and take the credits for it. But he's a nice guy and has been asking me to teach him Haskell in my spare time. He even told me to tell the teacher I did the project all by myself.
I'm kind in the middle of an existencial crisis. What should I do?

I have to install windows for this project because I usually work in spare half hours and the virtual machine takes 15 minutes to boot.
I tried to Google what to do if my only windows machine has space on the secondary disk only, because the install media creator requires 8 gigabytes. The only answers were mocking the op for buying a 50 GB SSD. I didn't even start working and I already hate the windows community.4 -
Guys I need your help about iMac vs PC
So I have finally got some cash in my hand to spare. Enough to buy an iMac 27 inch or a high end PC.
I used to game a lot but I've slowed down eventually to be more productive.
I mostly work on node, c++ and Java.
I used to use a Macbook Pro and I felt it was really productive.

"Why would you need it this way?"
"ID fucking K. Maybe I left a fucking hint about that in the context? Can you spare like one or two minutes to read the context?"2 -
I've always wanted to make games, I went into university doing mechanical engineering and while at the start I enjoyed it, getting closer to the end I had a hate for engineering, as this hate grew I ended up trying to learn programming in my spare time, actually I spent my spare doing lots of things which basically gave off the impression I wouldn't be happy with engineering.
After I graduated I decided to do my BCIS and I loved every minute of it, I was fortunate to get a lecturer in my second semester that was an experienced game devloper, someone I look up to and someone who pushed me to my absolute limits, even with the sleepless nights I was still happy with programming, the logical thinking that goes into programming and also the near instant feedback is what I really love.
But as it comes down to it, I've gotten closer to my dream of becoming a game developer, it may only be as a hobby for now but I'm really grateful I have gotten into programming.
So I guess with coding has changed my life for the better, since I know I'd never be happy as an engineer, and even with all the issues I run into I still enjoy it in the end.
Let's see how long this lasts lol -
Is dual booting between linux (specifically pop os) and windows 10 possible these days or do we have still the grub ignores windows and/or windows ignores linux problems?
Please spare me with comments about windows, I'm sorry that you use a Home edition which has limited settings or you're too bigoted to accept other concepts than linux'.

For those that play Dota 2. I went looking at the Lore of some heroes and decided to search the names of a few, and by searching "Slark" - instead of a hero, I found an artist. Even the heroes be hustling in their spare time👌2

Quick question/update over a previous rant.
My netbook battery status was always 100% on Lubuntu 18.10, I switched to Xubuntu and the same happens, but it reports correctly with Puppy Linux (old version). I thought the problem was in the battery itself, but now I think it's due to some broken drivers in newer version of Debian-based distros, or it is a bug in newer Linux kernel. But since I have no time to spend on a spare netbook, I'm not willing to test more options.
Anyone has a clue? 🤔

So I work full time at a retail store, but only one person is on shift at a time here so I'm allowed to bring my laptop and code while I'm running the store. This is where I get most of my schoolwork done and make most of my project deadlines for web dev job.
My only social life really consists of me hanging out with my boyfriend. Often when I need to be working on some code or project he will sit next to me and play guitar/sing or will quietly read while I'm on my laptop.
Other than that I chat with some game friends through Discord throughout the day, and often visit/help family members in spare time off of work.
Not much of a social life when you're super busy -

Sh*t. I think I'm going to lose my job bc the CEO thought I was an expert on React even thought I specifically told him I wasn't. I worked at least 12 hours everyday, sometimes including weekends for 4 weeks now. And still got yelled at for not being an expert.
If you tell your manager: "I only used this tech in my spare time", would they expect you to be working at expert level?
I'm very confused and seems like noone is understanding my side.

A Bible app for Android called Tour the Bible. It uses the Google maps API to put a pin in each location as you read so you can follow along and virtually "tour" the Bible.
I had a basic version built but then I switched to Kotlin then I pretty much completely rewrote it to use an api for the Bible content instead of plain .txt files. I still try to work on it in my spare time but with a family, full time job, full time school and part time freelancing I don't get much spare time.2 -

Help. I work with a guy who really wants to learn programming (he’s sales/support rn) and is even taking some courses on it. He seems eager enough to learn, the problem is he is just so fucking stupid I don’t know whether to encourage him or level with him.
He somehow managed to pass a course on Java (which I still don’t believe since I had to help him put his lines of code in the right order ffs), but now he’s signed up for C++ and data structures and I honestly don’t know how he’s going to do it.
This is the type of guy who loves “coding” but thinks debugging is a waste of time.
Normally I encourage anyone who wants to learn programming do so, but let’s be honest it does take a modicum of intelligence and this guy has zero common sense at all. We’re talking about a guy who sent me a *screenshot* of an Excel file that I needed to copy some activation codes from. And then had absolutely no idea what was wrong when I replied “are you fucking with me right now?”
*sigh*
And that’s not even scratching the surface. I sent him a zip file containing some updated code and walked him through how to update them on Slack (really basic, copy/replace files stuff). Then the VERY next day when I sent him a second update he asks “is there something you want me to do with this?”
The instructions were literally the last thing we talked about in the chat log.
I actually fear the stuff this guy would unleash upon the world if someone were actually able to teach him how to write a whole program.
What should I do? Right now my plan is to be vaguely supportive but secretly hope he will realize he’s in over his head and drop out before any damage is done. But my worry is he may just be SO dumb that he actually thinks he can do it. At that point I guess I just have to put my faith in his school and pray that they aren’t just giving degrees away to whoever can afford them. Because fear the day this guy ever gets a degree in programming.9 -
How hard can it be to make a calculator app. Apparently Microsoft cannot get it right. You might say hey, but it works already. No it does not. See in math 1-(-1)=2 because the double minus sign cancel each other and turn into a plus. Well the w10 calculator app, just does 1-1=0 and show that this is the result. Yes this is the result of one minus one. This is not the result of one minus minus one. This is basic math .... Stop focusing on the interface and code the base right Microsoft.15

Our keyboards/mouses are getting replaced (it's a matter of years) to Bluetooth ones. No spare batteries are given. From some of the offices the helpdesk where they give you new batteries are a few kilometers away, you have to call a shuttle...
Nobody communicated, but finally turned out that there is a floor responsible who has spare batteries. Of course, they are kept in a locked down cupboard, so each time that poor person has to be interrupted if someone has a drained battery.
Shall we stay with the gold old USB keyboards?2 -
Windows - what the fuck! I cannot understand why people WANT to use this - its' buggy, unstable and the user-experience leaves me with the same feeling as when i step on a dog turd barefoot.
I know Linux has been a hard road for many, even a few years back I would do an update and my day would be lost to fixing it. But it's literally made by people in their spare time! Ultra-corp Microsoft fuck it up all the time, with thousands of full time employees!
Gah. Come back steve jobs - I need a hug. (please wear your turtleneck)16 -
Fuck, I just found out that I have to replace the (pooled) company laptop, which I sometimes take home with me to continue some (work related) side projects, by myself if something happens to it.
Team lead asks me why I do that .... Because I am stupid enough to invest some spare time to get more valuable for the company, asshole.
And this is also the reason why I asked for a personal laptop as workstation several weeks ago... You dumbfuck -
Boss: how long would that feature take?
Me: About 2 weeks to implement and test.
Boss: hmm, can it be done it 1 week instead?
Me: .....3 -
I'm logged into my box at home via ssh and coding in vim.... On the bus, using my phone.
I need more spare time, I get to sit down in front of my computer for maybe 1-2 hours a week.1 -
Praying to every deity, I begged to spare me, to never kill my inner child. To never make me grow up into materialistic mindset that punishes curiosity and denies miracles.
It seems like my wish was granted. Am I naive? Sure. Do I have kid ego? Sometimes.
But I never wanted to be someone else.3 -
im not laid off (yet?)
but my company is doing layoffs , and it's my first time experiencing this
any tips on coping in such uncertainty and misery

Has any of you ever felt like you were going straight towards a burnout if you keep doing your actual job but consequently don't have any energy left during spare time to learn something new, new skills you would need to land a better job? Think changing programming "branch".
How/what did you do? I'm thinking of trying to get my boss to let me work less hours... But I honestly don't know if it would be enough.
Any advice?
Sorry for the downer post, I'll be back with shit my colleagues say soon enough ;)4 -
I'm intrigued, what are you all trying to learn in your spare time and how?
I'll go first, brushing up on maths by reading K A Stroud advanced engineering mathematics.
He's got an intro level book that's also very good.5 -
So a SQL server walks into a bar to grab a drink. He gets his drink and spots a table with two people sitting down with a spare chair. So he walks up to them and says "Hey, can I JOIN you two?"1

That moment when you estimate the time for a task, you finish it with minutes to spare and your manager is surprised that the time left is not enough to rebuild it in a twice as complicated feature 😣😣

Hardware dying again as of last night. Tried each RAM stick individually and my two original ones seem to be the cause so far. If it dies again with the extra sticks I had in, them I'm going to assume motherboard is packing up. Already tried a spare PSU and ruled that out.
Memtest died midway at random points several times and once it tried to boot around 10 times and died at various points along the way.
I just wish there was a more reliable way to test motherboards and power supplies on the PC itself. Also, I'll be stuck with only 4GB RAM from me new sticks 😭 -
That big moment of relief: had a project idea I was way too excited about, that involved a bunch of things I have no idea how to do. I don't have any spare time to do the project, but I wanted to do it so bad. Turns out there already is quite a good version of what I wanted to do. Now I don't have to worry about when and how to do it.
For the curious ones: I wanted to use an AI to detect grains and scratches on old images and have it automatically assume from the areas next to it what color they should be filled in with. -
I love devRant, show new prespective and many related story around me and my job.
For me devRant is like medicine, help me smile and make my good mood sometime.
But, also like medicine I only open the app on spare time or when I need it.
I just curious why so many people so addicted to this, also I see some user maybe like 90% exist and continously comment on every rant that I open.
Maybe our reference/priority is different, I prefer playing game mostly.
Well that what I think, just random spawning before go to sleep mode.13 -
Just want to take a moment to thank Sir Francis Regex (AKA Stephen Kleene) for creating regex. Thank you for making my life easier and better through your efforts. Rest in peace, my friend.
Regex is the shit y'all. We all stand atop the shoulders of giants. Spare a moment to reflect and appreciate. -
Why am I incapable of studying human languages that I can use to communicate with people I genuinely want to talk to, but will use all of my spare time to learn a new computer language that I’ll never use!?1

I kind of like how quiet it becomes around @ d weekends. Who doesn't have a few mins. to spare here in working time, but the personal and fam. time is sacred. Respect++ 4 dat =]

Alright my fellow devs and other tech related/adjacent people, we can easily glean from your rants and profiles what you do while developing. But I want to get to know the person behind the screen. After all we aren't our jobs.
So, outside of software development and related activities, what do you do in your spare time?7 -
When you propose a project and your friend programms the funny parts that you seek forward to do, while you had no time to spare. 😭😭😭

I was given a week and a half to build this, in December last year - it had to be finished before I flew to America for a month. I did it with 2 days to spare.
The project manager is still coming back with amendments and changes - 6 months on.
It's still not live.2 -
As soon as I'm starting a project in my spare time again, I'm starting to dream in code again..
Came up with a solution in my sleep though.2 -
For first time in 2 years i called my boss saying 'i've nothing to do right now'. I'm feeling free and strange at the same time 😅

I have spare time. I could work on my project. The project is on my laptop that is at home. I didn't sync the files. Fuck.

I actually don't mind setting up the printer. What I do mind is when they call me when the computer won't even turn on. Like I have spare power supply's just lying around.1

Any laptop suggestions? My budget is around £400, preferably AMD but Intel is acceptable
RAM isn't an issue as I have a spare 4GB ram stick
It's mainly just for programming, so a fancy GPU isn't important15 -
What can I do with my spare Android devices/boards? Could I use the board with a custom OS for a Pi/Arduino analog?
I have 2 tablets that I have no use for. Googling suggestions are pretty simple and nothing that repurposes the hardware.7 -
Im trying to learn vim in my spare time. Obviously, I am fumbling around and am nowhere near as productive coding than in the IDEs im used to.
For you vim masters put there, how long do you think it will be before I would be productive enough to use it as my main editor, assuming primarily learning in my free time outside of work?6 -
Idk about you but when I get half a dozen opvotes from a single account and it seems to be a female, I fall in love a little bit.
Now, if I could just spare time for an actual relationship...7 -
Her: What do you do in your spare time?
Me: Learn to code
Her: Can you install an antivirus on my laptop and make it go faster?
Now I just want to kill myself. Who else here has encountered this?2 -
I'm just going to come out and say it.
I have enough CPU/RAM to spare that any benefit I could get over using Rust instead of a higher level language is far outweighed by how ugly the syntax is.6 -
Anyone with good/certain experience in using UIkit?
I have started using it for one of my client's projects. There is no one I know of using it. So it will be awesome, if anyone can spare few minutes and discuss with me. (or answer my stupid questions :P)1 -
I was already done with the company that couldn't make up their mind about JS. I got a mail:
They're stopping the procedure because they're looking for someone that also enjoys coding in their spare time. In other words: work 80 hours a week. -

Colleague alerted me to the fact I got a flat tire. Won't be able to slip out until my lunch break to check on the damage. It's been an expensive few months including this one so I'm going to have to dip into savings to cover the repairs. It's a small car so I don't have a spare and I don't have a repair kit but hopefully roadside assistance will be able to help. Never been in this situation before so I'm feeling like a dumb newbie.7 -
Not working side projects enough. Really puts me behind where I could be but working 9-7 5 days a week I really CBA in my spare time.1

So I'm chucking a spare second SSD into my PC and going to do a Linux installation, I'm going to go Ubuntu only because I have previous experience with it :-P

I've just found an article that states that MS Office 2016 can now be installed on Ubuntu using CrossOver, which is the version of wine one has to pay for.
Is there some version of wine or an alternative which is free and allows me to do this?
Yes, I know the alternatives of online MS, google docs, libre office and whatnot, so spare me these comments please.

Today I was revisiting my first ever WPF project made, turns out that a baboon could have written better code than this.
The project literally has messages going everywhere to every viewmodel even if it's not supposed to.
I'll spare the details, but let's just say I'd rather jump in a mountain of needles than try to add a feature in this mess.
So I am now refactoring without my bosses permission since I am the only one in this company able to work with WPF and I still have enough time for a simple refactor.
Already on about 200 errors by just changing a few lines of code because everything inherits everything. -

Just got my new monitors. 2x 28” 4K monitors... didn’t realise they were this big, so now I gotta get a new desk, but that’s fine, I just bought an apartment with a spare room I can make into an office (as soon as the current tenant moves out)
I live in a co-share apartment, and the owner wanted to sell it, so I bought it.5 -
Do you have a good use case to start learning kubernetes using the 300$ Google cloud startup bonus?
I need to build up knowledge because my work doesn't do it, so it could be either docker, or kubernetes. Both has to be done in a cloud platform because I have to do this in my spare time...
So do you have use cases and tasks for someone who's completely new to kubernetes? Or should I start with docker?5 -
In highschool I started by setting up an open tibia (OT) server for which I copied and edited lua scripts to create spells and quests. Didn't do anything remotely difficult in those times.
In university I needed to learn and use Prolog. And soon after that I had an OOP course in Java. Didn't really learn Java during that course. And started to accept I would never like real programming.
During a Datastructures course I actually got the hang of java and started to program in my spare time.
Finished the Datastructures course with a good grade which landed me a job as student assistant for a python course.
That job in turn landed me a part-time job as python developer where I learned most of my programming skills.
Now I'm back to working in Java and I still learn everyday. -
No support here. I was doing Communication Studies but spent most of my spare time learning webdev. My parents repeatedly berated me for messing around with it: "You should focus on your studies". Proving them wrong turned out to be THE most powerful drive.
3 years later I nudged my brother in the same direction when he wasn't sure what he wanted to do for a living (with parents' approval). -
literally everything, with infinite time to spare. (this is another reason why immortality sucks cock, btw)2

I'm currently working on a project in my spare time for which I haven't yet written much “real” code; it primarily consists of nothing other than extremely bare-bones pseudocode (hell, one of the lines literally reads “DO SOMETHING WITH THE API”), and it's already at a length of over 6KB. This is going to be a long-ass project.2

If you write a solution to something at work, then the company most likely holds ownership with whatever license they have.
However if you rewrite that solution in your spare time, into a package that solves the same problem but different then replace (with permission to) the original implementation with the new one..
Can said company then claim ownership on your package?3 -

Dev friends! I'm a teacher who is in the process of transitioning into the tech field. I've been working like crazy on and off in my spare time for the past couple years to build my skills and with it a resume. The other day I went to get someone with a developers perspective to proof read it and realised I didn't have anyone!
I hope I don't offend anyone by posting this here but I would appreciate that anyone who is willing and interested, if you would take a look at my resume repo I have and let me know what you think (on GitHub)! Please be critical, that's what makes things better! Side note. I'm constantly baffled by comradery in this community as a whole.

Has anyone got experience setting up a wallboard? What device would you recommend?
We use Klipfolio (which is great!) and I have a spare Samsung TV. I don't have a spare PC but could create a VM on the internal network for Chromecast etc. A raspberry pi is also an option. Chromebit looks good but very hard to find in the UK.4 -
Hopefully this meets the requirements for this time of post.
In my day job I spend my life working with .Net and MSSQL.
To do something different I’ve decided to sit down and properly learn PHP in my spare time.
I’d like to do this properly, can anyone recommend good up to date tutorials?
I’ve downloaded a couple of books, but the majority of the online stuff seems to be fairly old so PHP 5.6 rather than PHP 73 -
Dear colleagues, could you please recommend your preferred HTML to DOCX conversion library for PHP?
I really don't have 200$+ to spare for a library.3 -

I work in a repair shop, I have 300+ sticks of RAM laying around, from DDR to DDR3 (DDR3 of 4+ GB and DDR4 are either good for replacement on new computers or are sold immediately so don't count them as laying).
Also I have 200+ hard drives, IDE, SATA, SAS, 2.5, 3.5, 20 GB to 1 TB. Lots of them.
What can I do with all this crap? Not enough matching CPU and MB to make a working system (unless I make a very obsolete one but there's no point in doing so). I also am using single hard drives for backups (only 500+ GB SATA-3 though) so I'm mostly concerned with all that old ram. What can I do with them??8 -
I have a spare, fully functioning i5 CPU with 8GBs of RAM.

What would you guys do with it?7 -
Is that me or Lenovo cannot figure out the bios issue I am having with my ideapad-100. The Linux kernel says that the bios has a bug in it and then Windows can't update because the bios has a bug, the bios updater tells me the bios is perfectly fine. This is weird because the laptop is unstable whatever the Os and yeah it did that since I bought it and sent it to be repaired and still the issues goes on

Studying information technology, working as a devops guy and in parallel paying a flat for my girlfriend and me, as well as a car and motorcycle.

I write code as part of my job but also tend to have a lot of pet projects I think about in my spare time. A lot of those projects are not specifically targeted at solving an actual real problem but are just a curiosity (like my Duktape/ECMAScript thing that could import and call DLL routines.) I often find it difficult to choose which one to continue working on and end up not working on any of them because I can't decide which one is more interesting at the time! Or I get stuck and struggle to find a way around whatever roadblock I've hit.1

My goal would be to start my own software company - preferably without outside investors.
I don't think I'll be doing it anytime soon, at the moment none of my side projects are ready for public and likely never will.
Currently I'm motivated to start working on a git platform like GitHub or GitLab that improves developer UX and improves common pain points devs have, I would say this one has the most potential but it also requires so much work and time invested.
I also like making games in my spare time, but starting a game studio feels almost impossible to do without outside investors. -
So I have a website as a personal project that has a decent amount of visitors each day. The codebase, however, is really ugly because it's something I made very fast in my spare time three years ago.
Over the past six months, I have been working on a completely new version of the website with a better layout and much nicer backend code.
At the moment I'm pretty sure the new website is ready to deploy. I even asked some friends who tested the website very thoroughly and came up with some minor bugs.
But now I'm really stressed to deploy the new website and I keep postponing it. What if I forgot a stupid error? What if some mobile part doesn't work? What if the new website isn't as SEO friendly as the current and I lose my visitors? 😱2 -
MySpace 😂 lol but no for real back when I was a Psych major people started asking me to make them a site after seeing some random sites I dinked with in my spare time for personal endeavors. I then realized it could be a career, so I switched schools and majors. I enjoy getting lost in the code and doing solitary work. I don't like talking to clients or providing customer support so, yeah lol 😂🤓2

In my pursuit to land a fucking job (now a junior software engineer) I pretty much abandoned web dev for getting my head wrapped around Java as best as possible.
Now that I'm about 6 months in at the gig I'm thinking about looking to take on clients for web, mobile development in my spare time.
So far I've been trying to catch up on React and Node, anyone else more well versed in web stuff have suggestions of topics/material? -
A couple of friends were trying to convince me that I'm not satisfied with my job because I don't earn 6 figures and don't love it. But it pays the bills. It's interesting projects lately. Very low stress. I have pretty good friends where I'm at. Super casual too. Generally speaking I am happy here. I sometimes wonder if they might be projecting their unhappiness on to me.
Personal projects, sports and fun with friends/family in my spare time are my real passions.1 -

Also, what phones do you suggest for under ₹20k given the fact that as of now I'm not in mood to buy a Chinese phone
I'm currently thinking about Samsung A50 4GB variant4 -

Western Digital takes forever to RMA their hard drive under warranty. Had to buy a spare just to get my NAS back up and running before I lose everything (I only have a 1 drive fault tolerance RAID array). Too bad I only have 5 drive slots. 4 4TB WD Reds and an SSD for caching = 10TB usable space in this configuration. Actually this kinda pisses me off....I pay for 4TB drives and I get 3.64TB. For the 4 drives, that's a loss of 1.44TB.1

Three days ago:
Found my eOS had crashed. Got on my dad's spare Dell Latitude (by God, the keyboard is awesome) and downloaded an image file for Ubuntu.
Fast Forward to today morning :
Apparently, my dad never did down either of his laptops, or even lock. The Latitude had a update but it then started reverting it. It went into a loop.
My dad: what did you do?! It was working perfectly before, you must have crashed it.
What the fuck dad... Thankfully, he got it up and running later.3 -
I'm just a random student that didn't really accomplish something well-known or anything, but I'm very dedicated and always had a project in my spare time running. My goal for 2019 is finishing a playable version of a game I'm developing on my own for about a year now. It's all planned out and I just got to put more hours into it. Really looking forward to people seeing what I'm capable of!1

I used to code in the cab where the train operators drove the trains pretty frequently. I've also coded in an airplane hanger that was turned into a train factory, but it was less exciting then you'd think.
At the time I was working for a train company so it wasn't weird. I got pretty used to it. We weren't allowed to code in the same cab if the operator was driving the train, so I'd sometimes pop into the spare can because their seats are really comfy.5 -
When you've been ignoring the low battery light on your mouse for a few weeks, finally it dies while you're working and it's really frustrating to have to either go find batteries (good luck) or fish that wired mouse out of the bin of spare things.

Which platform do you recommend for inter-team comm?
We were on skype, but it didn't allow threads.
We have now shifted to Microsoft Teams but some members aren't liking it because it does not have a native App for Linux.
Slack is paid, and we're already paying Microsoft for other features.
There are open source alternatives but we don't have a spare machine to host on...

My first exposure to computers was when I was about 5 at least that's what I remember. My dad and his friend built custom rigs for people in their spare time back then (late 90s) I remember playing some racing game. I had an introductory course on C during my engineering (using the Turbo C compiler). Got interested there and started learning on my own during the breaks between semesters. Mainly ended up doing basic things with VB 6, C, C++ and some Windows programming using a language called BCX Basic.
Then ended up being introduced to HTML, JavaScript and Java during my first job and ABAP in the next. Also managed to learn a little of Python in my spare time (weekends) along the way.
I still continue learning the basics of new languages in my spare time (planning to start with PHP next). -
How to do you guys take a 'shift' in your profile when working as a developer for some company?
Like if you are a web dev guy and want to get into native android dev or vice versa or start building apps for ios or getting into a complete different role of manager, dba, sysadmin or hr, or whatever there are profiles in a company?
Would your company allow you to take some 3-4 months course or would you do that i your spare time?7 -
Been developing a website for a few months for a group of people who started a company in their spare time. Basically, everyone puts in about 5 hours a week. The two founders spent a year planning the site, creating mockups and collecting data. Site has user login, 5 main sections that all require custom programming to do what they need it to do.
After a month, the one dude is getting pissy with me because I can't get their site up any faster. I agreed to 5 hours a week, in my spare time for equity to a project that has no clear monetization plan. Sometimes my main job and paying clients eat even that time up.
To date, I've only got about 30 hours of actual dev time, and 15 hours of meetings. The first launch is in sight, but the site is a monster and has more phases to come.1 -
I've been wanting to play with and do some development on Linux again. However, my only spare computer is an old Asus netbook. Im attending Computer Science Study's im at the end of 1. Semester. We'r going to cover app development in 4th semester, but i cant wait that long, i want to use my spare time starting to build apps to get ahead of studys.
Im currently pretty decent in Java, so i want the app based on java language, and we've used scenebuilder for our desktop GUI's so far with FXML..
QUESTION : What do you use to develop java based ios/android apps - software, languages, etc.
Dont want to start a "this is better than that " war, just looking for a good entrypoint to java app development.

As a college student, I find it hard to take out time from the college schedule just for studies. And it's not just the 9-5 but the time after that I am unable to spare. I have a personal learning goal that I will learn some xyz technology before the end of this semester. But in this entire week I have been able to dedicate only hour of time to my actual learning. There's college quizzes, assignments and my juniors come to me for help as well.. I help out as best as I could but them being new devs, it's like they haven't discovered Google yet. Everytime they face an error they're like, "please help us senpai". It's really time consuming.7

Anybody fluent in Adobe Illustrator, with 30 minutes of spare time feeling unlikely generous today?
I need a tiny, tiny, tiny and simple shape/logo to be done, but my credit card is locked until next month due to previously put (by me) limit.
I can only pay in special thanks on the projects (open source) page. -
Let’s play a game :
With some spare part you have somewhere in the boxes, what can you build “best” and what’s missing ?
I’ll start. With unused parts in my boxes I can build :
• Core I7 3770k on Sabertooth motherboard
• 16 GB of RAM
• GTX 770 as video card.
• 4K Asus screen
• Creative sound card
Missing :
• The case
• PSU
• Hard drives/SSD17 -

If i'm trying to build an example server for a class to demonstrate my grade project (i'm researching hacking, ethical and unethical) and I know basically nothing which is still more than any teachers I talk to on a daily basis (tech manager said I can talk to him with specific questions)
I'm trying to set up and IIS7 server on a spare computer and I'm trying to get Apache to work as well just to learn more but I have no real clue where to start at all
can I get some advice on where to start and maybe some more ideas on how to expand my own
I don't know where else to ask about this since StackOverflow is more for specific questions and I don't know any other sites or apps
please help me4 -
Tfw when you left your earphones at your parents home and you don't have any spare earphones at your own home.
Well, guess I'll just have to hear all the gossiping and whatevs in the office for the whole week1 -
I'm writing a personal statement for 5 Computer Science courses at the moment and I can't decide, should I set up a GitHub Account and slip the username in there to show a few of the projects I've been working on in my spare time? (Keeping in mind that it's literally like 1 program called "Games" that has Battleships and Rock, Paper, Scissors and maybe one other thing)8
