You remember when I said the people near me might take everything away?
THE DAY HAS COME.
FUUUUUUUUUUU-
Do I have to say how retarded it is to take a PC and a phone away from a person who first off, loves tech, second of all, gets all her university assignments and information THROUGH an email, third, wants to be a game developer?
Seems like even telling them that I am trying to get as much informed about gaming industry as a whole isn't a valid fucking reason for why I use tech as often as I do... I want to be a game dev, you fucking morons.
So... This began by them AGAIN drilling me about the university progress. I cannot even remember my goddamn schedule, for fuck's sake! How do you expect me to remember every damn grade, every damn exam date and every damn subject name? They also expect me to study 100% of the time I'm using the PC. WHO does that?
They start drilling. I try not answering. It drives them mad. They start exploding. I try all I can to calm the goddamn situation. It's not enough for them. NO, they HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING! I try all I can to survive the situation without a conflict. Too late. At a certain point my amazingly clever father says I'm definitely autistic for trying to answer in as little words as I can. Because they totally don't give me a reason to never want to talk at all in their presence...
They got mad enough to take the phone, the PC and my headphones away.
And now here I am, writing this on a university PC in Chrome of all :|60 -
Me: Alright, let's code!
School: Psst. Hey.
Me: What?
School: Remember that assignment from last week?
Me: Oh god please no.
School: Yeah, it's tomorrow. And you have a Geography exam next Monday. You love geography, right?
Me: Please, no, I want to become a programmer, not a--
School: Shush... It's okay. Programming can wait. You want a to get a job, right? What would they say when they see your poor Geography?
Me: That doesn't even... Okay, fine, I'll do it...
* two days later *
Me: Fuck me! Finally! Let's do some coding now.
School: Psst. Hey.16 -
(sensitive parts censored)
Friend: Hey, can you hack my (some website) account?
Me: Depends... What's your username?
Friend: (tells username)
Me: (clicks forgot password?)
Friend: I will give $10 if you do it. There is 2 factor authentication enabled.
Me: (silence) Ok.
Website: Please type the class number you were in in 4th grade.
Me: Hey, did you graduated BLAH elementary school?
Friend: Yeah.
Me: Ahh, I remember. You moved to BLAH elementary school in what grade?
Friend: 4
Me: Hmmm, I don't remember seeing you. What class were you in?
Friend: 5
Me: Well, I now remember. Stupid me. (smirks)
Friend: Haha. (continues to play games beside me)
Me: (Types in 8)
Website: We sent you a password to blah@example.com
Me: (uhh, heads to example.com and clicks forget password?)
Email: Please type the class number you were in in 4th grade.
Me: (wtf is this, types 8)
Email: Please type the teacher's name when you were in in 4th grade.
Me: What was the teacher's name?
Friend: Huh?
Me: When you were in 4th grade.
Friend: Ahh! John Smith.
Me: Ahh, he was strict, right?
Friend: Yeah (continues to play games again)
Me: (Types in John Smith)
Email: Set a new password.
Me: (Types "youaresostupid")
Email: Done!
Me: (copies PLAIN TEXT password from email, logs in to website)
Me: Da-da!
Friend: (gasps)
Me: Money plz~
Friend: Nope.
Me: (wtf, then remembers i changed his email password) Fine then.
=====================
1. There is 2 factor authentication enabled. : Got it?
2. The website sent plaintext password.
3. He is just pure idiot.
4. I didn't got the money.
5. I am now a h4x0r11 -
woke up at 5am
no alarm clock was required
my fucking passion woke me up to get up and code.
i coded outside in my backyard
felt like cold war
it was night
it was dark
a depressing horror atmosphere
just like my whole life
2 hours later i started seeing sun
it was cold outside. alone. in the dark. my arms were freezing.
but 2 hours later i managed to code the feature. it worked.
3 hours have passed. im ripped. quentally.
doing it here. inside now. started the day happy. dropped bullshit from day before. cleanser of all toxicss.
fuck the past. the past will pull you down and kill you.
this. remember. always do not forget.7 -
I don't remember much but I think I was sitting on my dad's lap while he was using word or something.
Windows (95/98?) though 🤢
Gladly we all use Linux now (le family)2 -
My freelancing horror story?
I remember like it was yesterday. It was late at night and I was doing some freelancing. (You know... the good stuff...)
All of a sudden the light began flickering, it got really cold and I felt like something was watching me!
OMG! SOMETHING JUST TOUCHED MY SHOULDER! I TURN AROUND AND...
...nothing. Nobody was there.
"I really need some sleep", I think to myself and turn back to my monitor.
Wait a second, what's that?
"10%..."
"20%..."
"60%..."
Oh my god...
How could this happen to me?
Those bastards got me after all!
I just witnessed...
A WINDOWS UPDATE!!!
The end~

And remember the scrolling position. WHAT THE FUCK!? I did that shit
15 YEARS AGO

It is just… a sad, sad place. I wish the old web was back. Super quick. Simple. Clear.

In the last 48 hours Bitcoin has gained about 2.000 USD in value. (Now ~12500$)
WHAT THE FUCK
And I remember this summer when Bitcoin was at about 4000 and everybody said "naaah I'd rather not invest in Bitcoin now, it will fall in value soon"16 -
Today was hell on earth as for user support. Phone going non stop, tickets coming in faster than we were able to process.
At the end of the day I had to make a symlink for a customer which is fine. But, the day was so busy that I just couldn't focus anymore.
I've made 1K+ symlinks in my life probably but I couldn't remember if the source or destination comes first with a symlink.... The day has been hell and I just couldn't bring up a single second of focus anymore..
Fuck it, I'll do it tomorrow. I know I can do this but I don't trust myself with this right now in case of a huge webshop (swap the source/destination: webshop gone).
I think I'll thank myself for this tomorrow.13 -
I applied for a backend job. Somehow i ended up doing frontend. Ok whatever the pay is alright and i dont mind doing js. But then i see the backend team doing absolute horseshit, stacking up overhead and not even fucking documenting the endpoints, i get mad.
And now our sysadmin left so there is no fucking server and i cant run locally because of 9trillion config files (remember the overhead part?) and the pm is nagging me to get the site done WHEN THERE IS NO FUCKING SERVER. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME, SET IT ALL UP AGAIN? THATS NOT MY FUCKING JOB YOU IMBECILE FUCKFACE.8 -
(sorry if someone's already shared this)
Very true though. I remember very clearly when I was around 10 years old, wondering what all these random symbols on a keyboard were for and what type of person would use them.
I guess I'm that type of person; never would have guessed at the time that my fascination with technology would lead to where I am now.
Anyone here have a cool story to share about why they decided to become a developer?4 -
Me: ooh my eyes hearts, I have to sleep now, I fix this tomorrow morning.
(go to sleep)
Inner Me: hey
Me: ...
Inner Me: pisst! wake up
Me: what?? leave me alone I'm tired
Inner Me: remember that issue you had?

Inner Me: this is how you can solve it

Inner Me: no no you have to fix it now
Me: I'm tired, I'll fix it first thing in the morning
Inner Me: no no you'll forgot it
Me: no I won't, let me sleep
Inner Me: no no you'll forget and I won't tell you again
Me: look I write it down in my phone now leave me alone

I remember the day when my room was messed up and my desktop icons were organized.
But now, my desktop icons are messed up and also my room is.

Hey DevRant community :-) I’m Milo, I’m quite new to this app and to be completely honest I’m already addicted to it! And honestly just having a community which is full of developers or people with common interests like myself just makes me feel warm and happy! .
A bit about myself I’m from Australia and gained an interest in Coding about 2 years ago where i landed a course in TAFE. Now i had absolutely no prior experience i was a complete rookie, first day was basically (if I remember) only one day of using the console with what I remember to be sequential programming. Well after that it was all GUI and a disaster i had no clue whatsoever of what i was doing and well interestingly enough i still managed to enjoy it and move on😅.
Fast forward about six months I’m now doing a proper degree and actually understanding concepts and better at coding and i love it!. Welp guys & gals i thank you for taking the time to read my post I certainly hope i posted this in the right section! :-)
Hope you all have a great night or day where ever you may be!.29 -
Now I remember why I don't work from home.
It's 3pm and I've managed about an hour's work today -- most of which was debugging something really dumb. Lunch took me 2 freaking hours because I had help from a noisy smoke detector (EEEERH! EEEERH! EEEERH! EEEERH! ad nauseam), and everything kept going wrong. Girlfriend went to the store to pick up groceries; they were order-online groceries from a store 6 minutes away, so idk why it's taken over an hour. Now the smoke detector is pretending to "go to work" by watching youtube, and when that gets boring, he fights with his baby brother and steals his toys.
Children are fun and all, but they require 98% of your attention. and fuck, nobody else in this house makes any money, why the hell am I stuck watching them? While working!?
asdfakshaslkgjasdg
Update: now the smoke detector is taking the computer apart with a random electric screwdriver i haven't seen in years, and the baby suddenly has no pants.9 -
When I was a kid, my dad was always busy. He is an orphan with next to inheritance and had to work really hard to send me to school. I don’t remember playing with him ever.
He is about to retire in a few years, so he gets some free time now, but now, I’m struggling too hard and don’t have time for anything random at all. The generation gap makes it impossible to share anything at all.
We don’t have any common interests, and don’t get to do stuff together.
Today, we built a mechanical keyboard together. 1 hour. I absolutely loved it.4 -
I'm so grateful DevOps is now a thing. I remember getting a phone call from a client at 2am on a Friday because their site was down and having to ssh in from a Nokia with the world's tiniest keyboard to reboot the server.
Of course that particular server only exposed port 22 on it's local network, so I had to first ssh into another server which did have its ssh port open to external connections.
Trying to remember two sets of credentials and type them in on a tiny keyboard, while so drunk you were seeing double, standing outside in the rain as it was the only place you got signal. Yeah…I'm so grateful DevOps is now a thing7 -
Just wanna say I fucking LOVE..
... Linux
... Open source
... GPL & MIT License

.., devRant
... more stuff
... TDDR (Too Dunk, Don’t Remember)
Most of us are complaining / ranting way more often about development and technology than we do appreciate it..
Just look at our great and unique community..
Im often angry but right now I remember how great the dev community is and I love it:)4 -
Im way to fucking dense... Today a girl tried to show me she wanted to get to know me.
I was at McDonalds to get a coffee at McCafe. Since Im a regular there I know one of the guys enough to make jokes with him. So I was talking to him while he was making my coffee. Just before he finished it a girl interrupted him with the question if she could finish it. All she had to do was draw something with caramel on top of the cream.
I thought it was kinda rude because I was talking with her colleague. She gave me the cup and I walked out after thanking her, only to realize what she had drawn after I sat on my bicycle.
She had drawn a big heart with a question mark in it. I didnt really pay attention to the girl because I was annoyed she broke of the conversation and just took my coffee and walked out.
Now Im trying to remember what she looks like so I can talk to her tomorrow, but I dont even remember her hair color..24 -
I've uncovered the complot.
I clearly remember buying my first monitor, it was 15 inch, 1024x768. Then I went to a 19 inch 1680x1050 one, then 24 inch 1080p, then 27 inch 1440p...
Now I used two 32 inch 4K screens at work... and I come home, and the three 27 inch screens look a bit smallish, with the old 24 inch one being absolutely tiny on my desk.
It wasn't that tiny when I still owned the 15 inch screen? And my 5.5 inch phone doesn't feel as big as when I bought it either?
So the complot... All monitors slowly shrink over time, and they start shrinking faster when new monitors are brought into the household.6 -
Remember that question on Stackoverflow: GIF or JIF?
Today, my teacher pronounced Github as Jithub... Now, I know why they asked. No offense, it's just weird for me.12 -
Oh my fucking god. Stop posting the same screenshot over and over again. Ok, a company tested in production. But please don't send me screenshots of that shit every goddamn few minutes you cunts. After seeing the same screenshot for 20 times I finally got it so shut the fuck up now.
And maybe you should not only think about bad software. Maybe you should remember who is using that shit8 -
50 years from now, this might be a conversation I have with my son and grandson"
Me: "I remember the time we had a dot matrix printer"
Son: "What's a dot matrix printer?"
Grandson: "What's a printer?"2 -
Appretnly for 5 devs + 1QA we need now :
A project manager
A scrum master
A VP of engeneering
Another person I don't remember title.
yep 2023 will be "productive"9 -
When I have low motivation, I just remember that through my teaching, my 79 year old grandfather learned how to stream videos on his own, asked me to teach him how to pirate movies using torrents and bought himself a smartphone and now sends me emojis.
If he can do all that, I can tackle my Dapp. Thank you Dedushka.2 -
I remember installing Firefox on a machine for a lady because she claimed having issues using our app in Chrome. She turned around ask me : So I'm gonna have 3 operating systems on my computer now? (She was using IE as well ). I could tell she was over 50 so I let that one slide.3
-
Guys i got 1000++!!!
It's not that i'm special now.
Just more special than others.
Oh I remember the old times when devRant veterans like @linuxxx or @Alice posted their first rants and I welcomed them!
I even remember that night I gave @dfox the idea of creating this app! "That's stupid.", he said. "If this app should be succesful I owe you some special kind of duck we will produce for some reasons I don't know yet!", he said.
But for real now: Thanks everybody for being a part of this and for bringing me so much joy!8 -
You might remember this board from my last post...
After weeks and weeks of trying to get this microcontroller to work I finally managed, and of course the problem was that I was being stupid...
Anyway, it now fades an LED on and off! Very fun, now to make a keyboard...11 -
Remember when I said don't launch on a Friday?
Coming into work on Monday with a broken site is exactly why we don't do that...
Now I get to deal with fixing this issue while also dealing with complaints from managers who act like I didn't warn them.
Inspiration for alcoholism.5 -
The moment when you can look back at all the comments you wrote to yourself well over a year ago that go along the lines of:
"Don't delete this!"
"I know this looks weird, but trust me!"
"You coded this drunk, you couldn't remember how, and you wrote this comment to remind you that you couldn't understand it sober."
Can all be brushed away, along with the kinda hairy code when you realise that in your attempt to ensure you didn't break code that worked and wasted time trying to understand that you didn't have the experience to solve it, you now have the experience to solve it.
I guess I had such huberis that I assumed I'd never understand a certain problem...1 -
Made a bunch of bad decisions.
This one is the absolute worst.
Studying biology as a main subject intstead of computer science in high school.
Indian people in here would know, studying PCMB is no less than being a dare devil. 🤣
Why did I do that ?
I didn't want to get into medicine.
I just wanted to study it for fun.
And thought, I'll be able to study all of computer science in college 😶.
Its totally useless now.
How much of biology do I remember now ?
Not much.
Studying CS would have been much more beneficial for me.12 -
I don't even remember why the teacher asked us this as it was a first aid class, but it pops into my head every now and then.
Teacher: "What's the first three letters in any website address?"
Me:"htt?"
Everyone else: "www"10 -
Last meeting I suggested we started using unit test and perhaps TDD on our platforms.
My boss is open to it and everyone seems to like the idea...
Now I just discovered that our dumbass coworker is trying to say by my back that its a bad idea to double the code efforts and that he sees no point in it...
Well dumbass cock sucker who can't even fucking remember how to write `docker-compose up` without messing things up you can fuck your self because you are certainly gonna be fucked sideways untill the end of the year.4 -
Me : I found this code issue, I think we need to fix it
PO: does it affect the user?
Me: not really but we can make it better
PO: do you have a defect for it in *insert issue tracker here*
Me: no, I just noticed it
PO: is there an IM ticket for it?
Me: I don't think so
PO: is this issue already in production?
Me: possibly. Yes. That's why I was wondering if we should fix it.
PO: okay then we will fix it in the 3rd release from now if you still remember it by then.5 -
Earlier this day i reached 1000++. Nice, isn't it?
Suddenly an idea comes to my mind.
Why not make a rant and thank everybody? And now comes the important part:
Why not make up a funny story telling how i met @dfox and welcomed @linuxxx and @alice on devRant?
Because somehow the story isn't funny at all because nobody got that it was a joke...
Went great...
People think i'm really old (19 btw.)
People think I know @dfox personally
@linuxxx can't even remember how I never welcomed him
So... sry... I guess? But thanks for the really nice comments!9 -
I remember building a fully operative OS for computercraft in Minecraft ages ago.. now I struggle with Hello Worlds, even though I run my own company.3
-
Big title games
Console to Mobile: redesign the game to make it easy to play
Console to PC: just port the game, keep the console keys but remap them... randomly so it makes no logical sense and is impossible to remember or easy to press when needed (at least to me)
I guess ditching games on PC years ago was the right move but now I have A way overpowered computer... (Gonna take a while to get around to that ML stuff I had planned... Prolly taking a React/Native die first and maybe do some also for interviewing)8 -
All the time while I'm programming I hate Java.... Don't hate me now :D I'm learning Java in high school. I very love very fast programming languages such as C and C++, so this is why I don't like Java, but there are some reasons why I like Java. I just started learning how to create own window. What the hack is this? This is so simple. I tried to create window in C/C++ with OpenGL, just blank window with color. Complicated..... But with java it's fairy tale.
You can add me now to Java familly, but remember I also love C++.
So here your are, Hello World Java FX app :D
Final goal:
Create window application similar scratch.16 -
As much as I love Microsoft, they're really getting on my nerves now.
I didn't fuckin spend 499usd on a new lumia just to reset it nearly every month coz it decides to fuck itself up out of the blue.
What does microsoft support say to its random breakdowns? Oh um hard reset it. HOW ABOUT FUCKIN NO.
My on the ventilator lumia 1520 didn't give me these many troubles in years as much as the 950xl did in mere months.
I'm this close. THIIIIS close to return my lumia for an *gulp* iPhone.
Last time I used that monstrosity was years ago, iPhone 4 if I remember correctly.10 -
I broke into hotels WiFi. So here's the setup
They have a main router (TP-Link) which they use for official purposes then they connected the main router to a Microtik router for guests.
I got a glimpse of the software they use for accomodation, billing etc. It runs on php stack maybe MySQL too and some ip can't remember now. I can use wireshark to sniff the packets. Basically should I tell the office of this hotel about the security? Or just let it go.
P.S: Guys you know I'm visiting my gf but I've got some time for myself as she had something to do. So you know I'm not using my laptop when I'm with her.13 -
I didn't used Windows for a while,
and now I remember why...
that file is a .gitignore.
Windows is getting even worse day by day.11 -
I forgot my password to [SITE]. Of course, I click "forgot password", and enter my email, which I did remember. Fairly routine "ah shit we have a problem" steps.
Now, it takes a second. This is to be expected. So I'm not worried. I then get the email and...
Now, you will notice that I redacted some information, like the company name, email, and my PLAIN TEXT PASSWORD, and my name.
I would like to note that this isn't a small, very local company that's new (even then it'd be unacceptable), but this is a multinational, multimillion dollar company.
How'd someone fuck up THIS badly?13 -
At work:
** fast typing from lead and me fx**
** lead stops typing, scratch record sound and headhphones being taken off fx**
Lead Devel: Yo Al

** now I stop typing **
Me: .....yes......fuck
Him: yes...fuck
O_o fuck....that bitch is huge man.......2 -
"What would your perfect job look like?"
I remember when I got my first 'good' job. There were all these offices that were occupied and I wondered what everyone did in them. Some ... nobody even knew. Like I couldn't find one person in the office who knew what a given person occupying an office even DID...
I thought then (and I kinda think now) it would be fun to have one of those jobs that seems accountable to nobody and everyone at the office wonders:
"What does that guy even do here!?!?!"
Granted I'd probably just come in every day and work on a lot of personal projects (dare to dream) ... with the door closed... in peace...2 -
Do you have a dev (or informatic in general) nickname?
Oh, I love stories XD
When I was at university, my first boyfriend (now ex-boyfriend) was the only one who knows Python (teachers used to teach Java and C#). He was pretty old, like 4 years older than all of us, and when the teacher introduced himself to the group the first day of the semester, "Python" asked
- "Teacher, do you use Python platform?"
I don't know why, but the rest of my classroom mates laughed. And from that day, my friends called him "Python".
The funny thing is that two weeks later he became my boyfriend ^_^ a friend of mine said "he wants to show you his python :o"
A semester after our broke-up, I was invited to teach Python at the university. I accepted. Now some teachers remember me as "Python girl".5 -
auto.self.whatever.rant()
A few years ago, we had a lesson on git and stuff, and we had to create our first repository and push something on it to get familiar with the thing.
Our teacher jokingly said at the end "And always remember, no password in a repository!", and I thought to myself "who can be dumb enough to do actually do something like that?"
Now, guess which piece of shit had to reinstall two of his fucking servers because of security issues coming from not one but github repositories?4 -
I'm at a pretty cool company today, learning new stack now. Everyone is helpfull and teaches me a lot.
I remember at my first job, when I just started, my boss sent me a MINIFIED .js file (just one file and nothing else) and said "it doesnt work, please fix this". After OBVIOUSLY not being able to fix it, at that moment, I started to doubt my choice to become a web dev.
I turned out to be pretty okay. But, fucking hell, thinking back, that "ex-boss" of mine could potentially influence my later career decisions and not in a good way.4 -
I know this is SO original, but I like Linus Torvalds best. I love that he created Linux originally just as his own little project, and now..I'm sure you all know how big it is.
He also created git, basically because he was tired of the version control systems that were already out there. Just "oh this is shit, I'm gonna write my own", and if I remember correctly, within a few weeks he had the first functional version of git.
Plus the man says that he names all his projects after himself, I think that's pretty damn funny. -
I had a few girlfriends in the past and now am married for 4 years and can't remember any gfs before the married life. Ever had a pre-identity crisis?
My mind: "WHO THE F&*! WAS I? WHAT DID I DO? ITS LIKE TOTAL RECON AND AMNESIA ALTOGETHER!!"5 -
I fucked up. I forgot the password. I already knew I have a really bad memory but then pride came along and told me that I'd remember it this time. Fuck my fucking pride. I fucked up and now I've got to restore this mess.
Fuck.3 -
I knew someone that typed with only 2 fingers ( index fingers )
There were no comments in the code because, it would take ages to write a sentence.
I don't know how someone that was born with a laptop in her lap doesn't know how to use all the fingers to type.
But, for her this was just a job. No personal projects, no will to learn new things. Just do the work they give her, as slowly as possible.
I remember I forced myself to learn how to type using all fingers when I was little. Now I even rebind the movement keys on games because is more comfortable to use "the right keys" ( I hate wasd, esdf ftw!)
How about you, do you know anyone that-s bad at typing?11 -
!Dev
Okay so this is a very embarrassing story but I guess it's kinda funny so I thought I'd share it anyway.
I was playing a tabletennis game in VR and my opponent was a pretty chill guy who started blasting metal music. We were just casually vibing and then we started headbanging. Not a good idea with a VR headset on your head. There are two deep scratches right on my forehead now. Two perfect parallel lines.
I lost the game, and the smoothness of my forehead.
Okay kids, never headbang with a VR headset on, remember that.3 -
Yesterday I got stoned as never before with a few friends of mine. I don't remember everything, but appearantly I coded a neural network using synaptic.js that teaches itself addition. That's impressive because it's my first NN ever.
Also, my friends are pissed now, because I was on my laptop the whole time doing "some advanced IT stuff".2 -
I think I finally found a reason to have a phone with 8GB of RAM.
So that when TWRP craps out on data decryption and decides not even to ask for a password, at least I can push a whole fucking ROM into RAM to unfuck the phone. Because why not?! Why on Earth would software work properly when you can just throw more hardware at it?
Long live FBE, TWRP what craps out on it, and you remember those things.. SD cards for data storage? I could've used an unencrypted SD card so fucking badly right now, you know... Long live soldered in storage that's encrypted, "for security". Except for when the person who owns said data actually wants to use the bloody data.
FUCK!2 -
Finally fucking managed to setup quite fast map tile hosting including the tile generation after ages of research and trial and error.
I love this open (source) maps (openstreetmaps) project but man, figuring out what to do from a gazillion sources can be rather hard.
Now I'm just having some styling issues and the filesize is fucking insane (only the Netherlands with all data, 20gb+ if I remember correctly) so I'm just generating road maps for now. If someone knows some more about the styling as for the maps, please let me know!
Yeah, this is fucking satisfying.2 -
I remember the days when your only problem is creating an asterisk pyramid with for loops. Unlike now when you are thinking how idiotic a user can get.
Good old days1 -
Literally every single day.
I remember when I was dying to get in the field. Now that I am in I realized there are a lot of bleh moments.
Love my job tho, but shit ain't nearly as exciting as I thought it would be lol3 -
Flexbox.. Where have you been all these years?!
When I initially started learning web development I remember thinking 'someone didn't quite think this through..' about centering block elements etc in the dom. Those days are now over, I still believe in miracles.6 -
I think i made a costly fuckup!
Last month i was called into the cabin of main boss and i believe he reviewed my work and gave me a slight increment in salary.
Only today that i noticed about missing increment in my last month's salary i received last week.
Only thing I'm sure is that i remember feeling happy that day and telling about my increment to my coworkers. They don't remember about it now.
I have no proof if i actually received increment or if i am just hallucinating..
What to do? 😕9 -

So apparently you can now run Windows 95 from an app made in electron.
This was my first operating system. I can remember playing Pajama Sam in '96 at the tender age of 6 and teaching my parents how to use a computer. And now it's a freaking electron app that uses 200MB!! of ram. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.3 -
Remember how CPU speeds stopped mattering after they reached 2GHz? (except for gaming and media editing of course).
I believe Internet speeds have also met that zero marginal utility point at 15Mbps.
I felt no difference when mine went up gradually from 15Mbps to 75Mbps now. (Thanks ACT, India)14 -
I've been wondering this for a while now, but how are senior programmers able to (or at least seem to) remember all the code for all the different languages with all the different syntax?
Let me explain: From my experience there's usually two types of thinkers, there's the memorizers, and the logical thinkers. Its usually the difference between people good at history and people good at math. So considering that most programmers would need to be able to think logically (to problem solve obviously), how do they remember all this different code? I always forget the small details which I have to look back at earlier code to see how it was done (Especially annoying for written exams where we have to remember all the code and how to use it)7 -
Sooo...
Got Fired...
By the same fucking company who is responsible for my burn out.
Should I be Happy or Sad? No matter how I loved the company I can only expect more abuses... On the other hand, If I made a few complaints, I couldn't get fired now...
Anyhow...
This weekend (can't remember the day, It was the day I took two victans, 20's beers and the same join I would smoke in a whole week ... (It worked, so...) I posted lots of really bad shit on facebook about the company... true Shit, but you know... Truth doesn't matter.
Today got a letter ending my contract on the term of the current one... less than one month from now.
So.... Lets See...
At least this pushes the time I have to start making Apps to get some money.
Just lacking the energy and will...5 -
So yesterday ended with me becoming a first responder in front of my house. Talk about a crazy day.
Guy sped up down my very short dead-end road and flipped a school van down the embankment. Thankfully there were no kids in the van and the driver was okay.
I've never had to run into the scene of an accident before, and what the brain does in a time of crisis like that is absolutely amazing.
Feeling everything but the immediate need drain away. It was like time was slowed. I took in all the information of the scene and somehow worked fast while also double-checking every action I did.
I remember hesitating for a moment, worried about what I'd see. School students on the back. Would I see injured or dead children? Body parts? I remember saying "Fuck it" and running down the embankment and that was about it.
So serious props to any of you who read this that also volunteer as EMT or fire/rescue. I've long considered doing that myself and I may very well step up now that I've had first-hand experience.
And now for the requisite joke: Usually I only have to help out when Windows crashes. :)1 -
i remember how my father was angry at me, that i "only play games" on the computer. Cause what else can you do there? We had multiple wars about how much nobody will i be. Well I wasn't playing I was learning. Now i have my own family, got many life goals done. i dont consider me as nobody but my father still thinks of me as a young boy, at least he's sometimes proud. Sorry guys gad to lay it off. :-)3

What happened to the warm welcome that new users received back in the day? Now when someone posts their first rant people bash on details and give them no chance. I remember posting half-dumb rants, but no one gave me shit for that. It takes time to grow into a community, you can't just expect people to behave identically to the rest. Makes me a bit disappointed to be fair.9

Fuck Monday and SAs... Just arrived at office and logged in:

We're sorry your password is invalid

Let's I already have a lower, uppercase letter, a number

I may have over delivered my service to this first customer i got.
It doesn't help that pricing was dirt cheap and i over promised in a bid to make it attractive.
But in my hurry to please the client, I've been feeling so much stress since last 24 hrs. Dealing with customers suck. I hate this.
They can be little dumb and doesn't think much before blaming you if something's not working as expected.
I hate this feeling and now i remember why my initial business model was designed such that I wouldn't have to deal with clients.
But somewhere along the way, i forgot about that. :/
I wish I could get rid of this customer.3 -
Fuck! My brain just had a catastrophic forgetting!!
I can't remember the PIN of my Android phone that I'm using right now. Luckily, I'm still in because of my finger print but won't help is phone restarts.
Seems like your can't reset PIN without entering previous PIN.
Help!17 -
Just had my first insomnia night, I simply could not fall asleep! While laying in my bed I had great ideas for work and for my home projects, like new features, infrastructure and even implementation details. Now that I'm up I can't remember most of it, of course!
Worst part about it is that when I got to bed I had about 5hrs to get some quality sleep, now I got non it feels like. Fuck.
Can anyone relate? :/7 -
I got out of bed so fast because I wanted to do something on my computer. Now, I'm sitting here trying to remember what it was!4

Remember this one?

Yesterday I got promoted which is great, I know that I’m appreciated.
The job is really good, I enjoy every day at work..
But...
My darling, my love, my car (I named her Monroe)..
In the Morning i got promoted and in the evening I fucking blew up her engine..
I think it’s the balance in the universe.
I think I never enjoyed any car as much as I enjoyed her.
Her smell, her bitchyness, her looks...
I hope she’ll Rest In Peace.
Gotta find something that compares to her now which is gonna be a challenge. I used to drive her every evening and every Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, that’s how I spent my personal time.
Many of you won’t get me I guess.. cars are my hobby, my passion, a very important part of my life. For the last 5 years used to own at least 2 cars at once, now I own 0..😔
No idea what I should do with my free time now, there’s nothing I’m Passioned about besides cars..2 -
I remember the time when netbooks were a thing. An affordable device for easy tasks like web browsing. It’s in the name!
Excuse me, what? The web? It’s heavier than some games now! All thanks to React.js and stupid frontend framework boom of 2016.
Frontend people, wake up. Modern JS has everything you need. It’s time to switch to Web Components.36 -
I was using the app Jobr to apply for random positions. It’s like tinder — only you swipe to send your resume.
A week or so later I got an email from a company locally that wanted to set up an interview. I honestly thought it was a scam! I didn’t even remember applying for the job.
Long story short, they’re mostly desktop developers, and I’m the first front end web guy. I was initially hired to help with UI stuff but on the last project I was developing Service Workers. So I guess I just get invested and give my fullest.
Now myself and one of the other programmers are working on the 3rd gen of our software, built with Vue.js and rest APIs.4 -
I wanna be a millionaire, so fuckin bad.
So, throughout this week there have been massive trials and tribulations regarding my lack of coding practice however through many nights and days coding I have almost completed the task I was set last week.
I didn't realise how out of practice I was so this posed as a big challenge for me. However I pulled through and tomorrow it will be ready to send for the interview!
I also have another test to do in vanilla php - Typical blog which would be such a doddle now I'm back in the zone. I just have to remember I'm not using Laravel!
The sense of accomplishment is real and I'm so relieved I've come this far. Maybe I will have this career of my dreams which I rightfully deserve.
Below is Stripe, doing random tests :) -
I remember the days when you'd struggle to find a free course online. Now there are too many and you can't complete them all. Can't there be the enough amount of free courses, no more no less?

Automation always fascinated me. Not only it looks and behaves like a life form, it also can perform billions of calculations without making a single mistake while I can’t even multiply double-digit numbers with my double-digit IQ.
If you pick the right components, you can make an immortal, perfect machine that can do its job for centuries, even millennia without a single mistake. There is nothing else on earth that can do this.
There is a robot surgeon and its hands never shake. It’s just flawless. If it fucks up, there is only you to blame, the flawed, pathetic operator.
And now it’s time to remember that it was just a 40s technology all along. And now it’s time to remember that now there is machine learning. A whole new perspective isn’t it. All the mistakes that machines make are sitting in front of the monitors.
No wonder I decided to be an engineer.17 -
Is it just my perception or is everyone here all of a sudden getting unhinged? I don't ever remember this many regulars just going off on each other like they do now. I do feel anxious myself lately.
I am thinking for my own sanity to take a leave for a while.13 -
I'm back! I deleted my account awhile back, but some of the older members may still remember me. I got fired for using Google Chrome if that jogs your memory.
Anyways I'm actually a developer now! I graduated college in December and started my first dev job in February. I figured I'd sign back up here to be back with the community. Hello friends!3 -
First message of today :
"Hi, I'm X from the Y office. Do you remember that was you to set up our internal network two months ago? Ok, yesterday we called the elettrician to fix two wall plugs. Now our network is completely broken. Come to fix because we think you did something wrong."
I forced myself into some other jobs i had to do for about 2 hours. After that i grab the smartphone to answer.
Oh look, there is another message.
"Hi, always X from the Y office. We just restored the static IPs you setup after we've changed them early this morning. Now everything works again."
Oh really ?1 -

i am so lucky to have a good memory. i am not the best problem solver, but i remember lots of previous solution. being a dev has really help my thought processes though.
tldr; i told my gf i'd get an ass tattoo of her choice if i got a 1500+ on the sat and now i'm nervous because after looking online i can't find a single math question i got wrong.11 -
I don’t remember the first experience as I was a very small child, but I remember a very defining one: picture a 4yo just casually turning on the computer and playing a game.
My mother and sister find me out and panic because “oh no, turning it off it’s hard how will we do? Your father is working and can’t turn it off!”
Now picture the 4 yo saying “it’s easy, you just do this”, followed by him closing the game, launching the bash command to close the computer and going away.
I must have been so creepy in their eyes 😂2 -
To those of you who want to remember things longer and faster. Especially for students. There is an efficient solution to this pain. It is free, btw.
"Sans Forgetica".
There's now a new font which is created by "a multidisciplinary team of designers and behavioural scientists from RMIT University".
This font uses "the principles of cognitive psychology to help you to better remember your study notes".

Feeling so dumb right know.
I have a C# exam tomorrow (on paper) and i can't get my brain to think in code.
I can't focus, I can't concentrate. I don't remember things i normally know by heart. Is it just stress? (Everything is pretty hard atm, lots of stress, lots of problems).
What could i do? I'm pretty messed up right now...13 -
Don't remember who but someone here told me once, when I mentioned that I do java now, "wait till you get to reflection..."
Well it's time to suffer5 -
Me: Professor could you please see my code i have a doubt about it.
Professor: Wait a second.
In the mean time my HP laptop that was from 2006, and this story happen 2 years ago, overheated and shutdown. Remember that i was coding in it.
Professor: Ok let's see the code.
Me: I can't show the code now since my pc overheated and shutdown, and now i have to wait him to cooldown to turn it off.
Professor: Your laptop remember when i was a kid and we had thoose old TV where we had to wait for it to heat before we could see any image.
Well thanks HP for your old laptops that heated more than my hoven.4 -
I remember I was a child trying to tinker around the only computer that we had. No one knew how to install the Windows OS from scratch with the drivers and everything else (they were installed on floppy disks) so when no one was around I managed to do it everything. I remember such joy, felt like a hacker 😂
Now I'm a web developer and I feel like a moron each time I'm sitting on a defect I can't solve so I'd say these were good times 😜1 -
It's always fun to see some less experienced folks struggle with the shell :D
- quotes (single/double)
- subshells (and lost updates)
- variable substitutions (#, ##, %, %%, /, //)
- IFS
- environments vs variables
- associative arrays' limitations
and many more ways to drive the person crazy :)
I remember the times when I used to spend days-weeks over some problem - only because I didn't know how shell works. But it was worth it :)
Now I can watch others be tortured in the shell because they refuse to listen to my advice :popcorn:6 -
I really really really need more RAM. 16GB is far from enough. Had to witness the kernel kill all of my Chrome extensions and most of my tabs and an IDE and still it wasn't able to run that container in the 8G RAM it just freed up...
I remember the days when 8G RAM was an overkill.
The times have changed. Now I'm looking into getting a Linux lappy w/ 96GB and still worried whether it'll suffice my needs....11 -

It's fascinating to see C# mentioned as a "lower level language" now days. Times change.
C# was my first language when I started out learning about programming as a kid (I still think it's a great language) and I remember searching the forums for information about any commercial games written with it hoping it was possible to build something "cool" and "3D". Back then that was pretty much just a dream, or so it seemed. C# was, I understood, way too high level for anything like that.
Today it wouldn't be totally baseless to call C# the game dev industry standard.19 -

second job -> $4000/month

Our employee management system, for some reason, stored Testlists (I work in QA) linked to the user accounts that created them. Now after an colleague who worked there for five years left pretty much all our data was suddenly down the drain and nobody backed the fricking server up because, hey, whats the fun in that. Now all the tests need to be rewritten and other than the whole gui test automation of our product, maintenance of the same for another product, manually testing dev issues and training my new code monkeys to frickin not commit non working code to the trunk I have now also "Make a better Employee management system" (roughly translated those are the specs I've got) on my plate... I can remember back to the care free days of just before my boss asked me if I wanted to try to automate some of the test cases... How did I ever survive this paralyzing tranquility. Ha, surprise.
!rant, I fucking love the stress and juggling a shit ton of problems at the same time keeps ine on edge.2 -
The amount of times I've had to setup Linux distros because I can't stick to one. I've just ended up writing a script that will set up all my softwares etc now because it's that tedious to remember what I use.1

QA personal voice assistant that runs locally without cloud, it’s like never ending project. I look at it from time to time and time pass by. Chat bots arrived, some decent voice algorithms appeared. There is less and less stuff to code since people progress in that area a lot.
I want to save notes using voice, search trough them, hear them, find some stuff in public data sources like wikipedia and also hear that stuff without using hands, read news articles and stuff like that.
I want to spend, more time for math and core algorithms related to machine learning and deep learning.
Problem is once I remember how basic network layers, error correction algorithms work or how particular deep learning algorithm is constructed and why is that, it’s already a week passed and I don’t remember where I started.
I did it couple of times already and every time I remember more then before but understanding core requires me sitting down with pen and paper and math problems and I don’t have time for that.
Now when I’m thinking about it - maybe I should write it somewhere in organized way. Get back to blogging and write articles about what I learned. This would require two times the time but maybe it would help to not forget.
I’m mostly interested in nlp, tts, stt. Wavenet, tacotron, bert, roberta, sentiment analysis, graphs and qa stuff. And now crystallography cause crystals are just organized graphs in 3d.
Well maybe if I’m lucky I retire in the next decade or at least take a year or two years off to have plenty of time to finish this project. -
"Hello R., how are you?"
"Hi M.! I'm at the beach now, finally relaxing after months of work."

My new home office.
I haven't posted on DevRant in a while so thought I would share my new home office set up.
My old set up was great. Dual screen standing desk, fast desktop and great monitors.
Since having a new baby a few months back, the home office is now a nursery. My only option is to sit at the kitchen table or stand in the kitchen (I prefer standing).
So here it is, my new office. Laptop on a kids toy box, fit snugly between chopping boards and tomatoes.
And hey, I don't actually mind at all, I love my family.
Just remember that when life gives you tomatoes 🍅 ...5 -
Workarounds are great. I remember one time, I had a server that let anyone access any file as long as the knew the right path. I wanted to store data in a .txt (it wasnt secure passwords or anything, so calmyourtities), but then had access too it. Now, this server wasn't running anything except PHP, so I created a database.php, and within was just some php tags. I ended up modifying the database.php from other PHP scripts and storing all the data as PHP comment, then parsing thru it as I needed, so loading mydomain.biz/database.php wouldn't show the data. ex of my database.php (to all that might not understand because I'm bad at explaining):

I can literally remember back in January 2015 when android studio was a fat piece of slow SHIT and to boot up an emulator it took me 5-20 minutes. Gradle build took 1-2 minutes. I was dying.
Now 4 years later in 2019, it still might be fat but godfckindamn it is fast. Emulator boots up in 2-4 seconds. Gradle finishes in no more than 6 seconds. Hierarchy opens up in less than a second. Performance statistics and analytics no longer lag or have latency.
Google has finally done a great fckin job fck u thnx3 -
One of my students failed one of the necessary tasks for exam admittance, then handed in the next one (even a bit too late via email instead of uploading it properly lol). Then I reminded him that he already failed the course and that I cant accept his solution, thinking he might not have read my previous evaluation?
"oh yea, that's right, i remember now!"

Installed my telecom service provider's app for checking new packs. Didn't remember the password. Hit forgot password! I get my password in plain text in sms!

I use to be fairly good at Vala as and now I can't even remember how to load fucking CSS or use inline CSS .-.4 -
Weirdest thing I should be the most stressed I've ever been 🤔, my work load is insane right now

I distinctly remember all of us discussing how we prefer to work at night. I worked through the night and now about to work through the day. Now it's all a blur and I feel numb inside. I just spent… a significant amount of time touching my face feeling the bone tissue within. Now I have the perfect depiction of my skull, and when I open my mouth, I can see the picture of my skull doing so. To me, a skull has its own, separate face. Quite disturbing, not gonna lie.

Worst day of my life.
Got a job at an awesome company in another country but joining is in November.
Bunch of us got screwed over by the current company because of "downsizing" (out of the blue, they wanna start over with 4-5 devs like 2 years back) and they don't want to keep front-end developer as anybody can do it... (yeah I remember how the site was before I came... using ! important everywhere is not the solution).
Started looking for jobs (because I need to pay rent) so that I can spend 3 months there and then quit. Facing moral dilemma, as I don't want to do that to the company who hires me now.7 -
My mom: "My iPad is broken because I deleted by Goggle account"
Me: "Are you actually using Android tablet? How the hell that you deleted your Google account affects your iPad?"
My mom: "No, I definitely using iPad, and now I can't Goggle. And I don't remember my Goggle account. Can you come and help me to fix it?"
Me: "There is no way to fix it, if you don't remember anything about your "Goggle" account. But I will come and see what happen to your iPad later."4 -
Glavic ++es my rants from time to time. I didn’t see them, so I guessed they were relatively new to the platform. I opened the profile and saw a rant that said “sometimes I star rants that don’t deserve it just to remember where I left off”, and now every time I see a ++ from Glavic, my brain remembers it, and I feel bad.4

I remember when Android brought new innovative functionality and the play store offered hundreds of apps to customize your phone and so on. (Compared to my previous phone)
Now I feel like every new version, if it's Android or iOS, just adapts more to fit the common user. The apps I mentioned still exist but the store offers your trends that - yea, suck (hello social networks)! It's not a phone with new features anymore but a phone that's better for fucking braindeads. And I dislike that. I am not the common user.6 -
For a long time I was of the opinion that pointer variables in C/C++ should have the asterisk immediately after the type name (e.g. int* foo).
Eventually I became convinced that it makes more sense to have it before the variable (e.g. int *foo).
Now I find routines that return pointers look weird, e.g.: void *allocate_something() so I am considering adopting the original style I used.
The only advantage of having the asterisk before the variable name I am aware of is that it is easier to remember to add an asterisk if you define more than one pointer on that line.
Anyone else find it hard to settle on code style guidelines for their own personal projects?12 -
So, you all may remember my rant about my visual impairment. This dude applied the UNIX philosophy to glasses: They do one thing, and one thing well. He actually calls them "task-specific glasses" but come on now, that's the OG UNIX concept!
No, I will not have to have surgery - supposedly. The glasses he builds are ~$25,000. He said that when we go over spring break, he'll determine if we can go from 98% to 100% positive. If this can be pulled off, my life could be forever changed, for the better, hopefully...3 -
I honestly can't remember what the hell was wrong with me when I configured my laptop. Now I am stuck with a very decent laptop with a 200something GB hdd that is even slower than any hdd I use in my other computers. Wtf. It is ok for most Situations because I only ise it to write emails or browse the internet on the go and for the demanding jobs I have several very powerful pcs at home. But for travelling it is such a pain in the ass! I can't always upload everything to a cloud and I often don't have reliable internet connection, so I help myself with usb harddrives but that sucks as well. Argh, I need to get myself to buy a 1TB ssd. But they are so expensive!

A microwave can cook potatoes in ten minutes!? Why the fuck did nobody tell me?
A lot of workplaces only offer a microwave and no oven, and barley a kitchen to prepare stuff.
Hence, I was rarely bringing in my own food as I worked under the assumption that I had to prepare it at home and just heat it up at work. And potatoes take round about ~40 minutes the way I make them (20 min to cook, 20 min to steep).
Now, I will be using the shit out of those technical wonders and save a lot of money in the progress, as I used to go to restaurants almost daily for lunch time. Heck, I may even buy myself one for home use.
Oh, now I remember why!
This is what I get by being brought up by a somewhat esoteric mother.
"Microwave are no good, the taint the food."
No, they do not. It's science!4 -
Last week I was studying Cocos2d-python, I had been awake for something like 35 hours, kept alive by cocacola and coffee, and while debugging I started to hear my rubber ducks talking, I've written their instructions on a blackboard, and now I'm working on that project...
And I was there like everything was normal, I had more caffeine and sugar in my body than water, I remember clearly saying "thanks weird talking duck!"2 -
My first exposure to computer was at age of 6years.
My father had a very bulky laptop built by HP (I Do not remember any name of it).
It used to have sliding switch to open ,I used to put my whole power into open it.
It was running windows 98.
All I knew that time is
Start -> All program -> Accessories -> Games -> 3D Pinball !!
Then ,my father saw I was quite liking the games ,and he dual booted with fedora. I remember there was game tab with lots of flash games in fedora.
Like Tetris, games similar to candy crush, snake etc
BTW I got to know it was dual boot many years later.
I remember fedora because of that "f" logo.
I still remembered that After dual booting to Fedora, I was unable to start windows to play pinball (due to the boot option u get), I used to complain my mom that pinball opens if father starts the laptop, it doesn't open when I start!
I feel stupid now ,for that😄 -

We don't have a DBA. My boss has been gone all week and, really, this isn't a hard task. You check a fucking box.

I cancelled prime a few months ago so when I was doing BF shopping on Amazon yesterday, delivery is now 1wk instead of 2-days.
And shipping apparently is $9 if you don't meet the $25 minimum and manually select free shipping; I remember it was $6 before...
So a few thoughts I had:
1. Amazon really must need the Prime memberships to cover all the shipping costs since it is now a pain in the ass to get free shipping on the checkout page.
2. Americans really want instant gratification? Waiting a week is that painful?
In contrast, stuff from China take about a month but are much cheaper
3. The only thing that's worth buying via Amazon now is electronics and stuff that are fragile... And food that's on sale because they have to uphold quality
4. Lucky for me, I get 1 week shipping, I have more time to cancel orders... Which is what I actually did10 -
Anyone remember my rant about Go and GTK? Well, the main problem was that it was 3 AM, I've since completed it, and have begun to refactor that spaghetti mess.
I feel so good right now.4 -
I'm working on a firmware for 3d printers. I had to send a lot of data to another microcontroller and I was making a very sophisticated protocol. When finished I was so proud of my work but in that moment I remember that there is a thing called JSON but I didn't care. Now I have to send the same data to a webserver and need to move from my own protocol to JSON.
Fuck me. -
My New medication is !AMAZING....
Yesterday went to the Doc (another 100€ sniff) and got a new update on medication...
(check my profile history for the posts last weekend if ya curious).
One of them must be opium or something... I got so high It looked like Opium (I never did heavy drugs).
Now I'm falling all the time, Can't remember much last night and... man... I use/used Cannabis as medicine for years (on and off as needed) ... Still, remember when I could get high... And the highest time was when I learned cannabis it's great to stop suicide (A friend got me so stoned I couldn't move... Even if didn't really take out the tendencies and thoughts to kill yourself, you can't do it anyway...)
But this new Pill... ONLY SHEEAAATTTT...
Only problem,,, I can't really do shit Until my body gains tolerance... and I was doing so much cool ideas in my Office...
Btw, no more Space Again... The more drawers I place, the more stuff gets here...
But I think I'll lose all my energy again for the next months, so, fuck it.3 -
So my manager mentioned off hand that we might look at updating our company website to look a little more modern...
Me being me jumped right into action and now that I've finished I remember why I haven't built my personal site.. Fuck static web pages man...
Don't know why I did this, not even happy with it but I think it'll do, CSS and HTML is messy but fuck it, it works...1 -
My life with C++:
- my first course about coding was an intro to C++ for scientists (I studied physics), because "everybody uses it in the field". I never used it in my life in physics;
- I got back to it this year because I was planning on doing some interesting simulations with it;
- hence, this summer I started learning it again. I took one month to actually follow a structured tutorial so I could get at least slightly proficient for what I needed to build;
- and nothing, after one month without using it, I forgot so much already, and I feel like I'm going back to case one.
...now I remember how I felt as a student, when I was preparing for exams.8 -
Jit guy who is onboarding me talks slow, stutters(only in English) and talks 3x fucking times than-repeats sentences, tries to talk about things he does not know and ends with “I don’t remember/know it now”. Someone kill me please. I am too soft against these types, how can I say you are talking too much etc politely? It is like he feels lonely in corona times and wants to “onboard” me whenever possible...
Note: jit guy is the guy who pronounces Git as jit from my old rant.8 -
I just have a weird dream.
I am talking to a person and I enter into a dream land for a few minute (I think it a few minute) since I am really tired.
The weird thing is I am still having a conversation with the same person in my dream about the same topic. Now I am awake and that person doesn't notice that I was asleep (Good job my unconsciousness, good job my auto reply system).
Now here is a problem.I cannot distinguish the dream from reality and the detail of the conversation merge together. For instance I don't remember what is the correct price of the item since the price of the item differ from my dream and real world. The price of the item may be 2000 or 1800 , which one is it?
There are also various details which merge together.2 -
Good oop is hard to implenent and keep track off in my experience.
I have seen projects so hard which have such large hierarchies and reused components that even the most minimal change breaks an entire change. Dependency injection is a pretty cool tool to use, but I have seen more people fuck it up and make something that supposedly removes tightly coupled components be the extreme opposite.
Remember your basics people. Fuck
Ok everything is good now. Happy thoughts...nuthing but happy thoughts16 -
So my new car has now chevystar which is quite expensive, is fine and that, I don't really use it to be honest. Though it has a nice service to remember me if I'm on my 'no car day'-like with a google assistant -like voice.
But today while driving with my wife, we were listening music and the music stopped.
then, the fucking chevystar voice started:
"Remember you can get your new car now and start paying it in a year"
"Pay us a visit to your XXXX chevrolet dealer"3 -
LOL I totally forgot about the school today.
I went to job as usual, opened up Vscodium and started to write some stuff.
Then it hit me 😅 Oh god...
It took my 5 hours to remember but I'm in class right now.3 -
You know what fuck github , anyone remember when git cli was easy and straight forward to use
Now i have conflicting master branches because the remote is main and git automatically defaults to master.
Git still asks for a password while github can't wait to inform me how I have to go through the very long process of setting up an auth_token.
Apparently https remote origins for some reason don't work anymore, why because apparently i need to change them into ssh, good luck with the public key errors
This sucks , fuck github and fuck politics9 -
Remember how I made script to change brightness with keyboard shortcuts? https://devrant.com/rants/1845183/...
Well, after 2 days of complaining why the fuck this shit does not work anymore, I figured out I deleted it...also from trash.... OH, FUCK!!!3 -
Just found my first little game I wrote in c++ and opengl(like 5yrs ago). Need to rename over 300 file names, class names and for each class their members names and function names now because ewww how can you call vars in programming like that. Porting it to Linux now. Library linking is working yet. I remember how awful it was to do that shit in vs. In Linux its ez. Also wrote a makefile because vs always compiled my whole project every time I ran it (for whatever reason).
I think that's what I'm going to be doing as a side project this week.2 -
I hate leaving work late, stuck on a bug and 10 miles down the road heading home, figure out a solution and then argue with myself do I go back and fix it now with no distractions or write it down ... then in the morning I’ll do it but bear with distractions... or not write it down .. hope I remember and then do it in the morning
But I’ll probably get distracted.: forget .. then remember after everyone leaves and implement it tomorrow night .. lol3 -
Just found "coding interview university" on GitHub and checked what I know, what I don't know and what I knew and now don't remember any more. My self esteem is now really low LoL2

Java rant...
If public field declaration is so so bad, why can't all class fields in java just be private by default? And make it a pain in the ass to expose it as public?
I can't actually remember a time declared a class field as public, it is muscle memory now... Private bla Bla Bla, return, private bla Bla, return...4 -
So I want to inform my internet provider of my new phone number, but I can't remember any of my login info for their web interface because I never used it. Luckily, they have a "forgot my username" function, where I submit my email address and get a confirmation that my username has been sent to me.
Yet, I just don't get said email. I try again, but no avail. So I just guess my username and use their "forgot password" form, which – hooray! – confirms it just sent my an email.
But I don't get any email. I retry, I retry after a day, but no automatic response. I remember a incident a few years back when I didn't get some automatically generated mails from a company and decide to contact their support if they could just reset my password manually.
Nearly a week passes.
Now I received the answer. I just don't have an account.
Lesson learned: Next time I'll just input garbage first to check if those forms are sane. -
I've just updated my phone, and I have now realised I don't remember my new PIN and I haven't written it down anywhere.
FUCK!2 -
So I just read the Blink to "Poke the Box" and one question it raised was.
If you had no obstacles and unlimited resources (I guess like if you could retire right now and do anything you want), what would you do?
For myself I couldn't really think of something/a goal/big project that would keep me interested...
(I vaguely remember maybe there was a Weekly Rant about this...)4 -
Sometimes I feel like, if anybody would have told me, the real use of GitHub, bitbucket or any other version control systems. Then life would have been much easier.
I remember in my college days, I use to keep the code backup in several different places on my system as well as Google drive and Dropbox..
For working parallely with the team-mate in college means...sharing of changed code..every now and then..via mail😫
Git, bitbucket you're the real MVP. Period.2 -
On The State of Twitter And The World
(important update: everything is still shit and heres 10 reasons why)
Why does it seem like in order to get ahead in life everyone has to self promote now?
It's not enough to be on twitter. You have to like posts. It's not enough to like posts, you have to ask directly for endorsement. But don't ask too directly. And make sure you read this "55 reasons why I don't retweet you list", where I say "remember to stay relevant!"
and "you only ever tweet me when you have something to sell." and "remember to carry on conversations."
Great so we've went back from marketing to sales.
To read the rest, don't forget to visit my fucking link..

I know I shouldn't compare myself with someone but I couldn't stop myself this time.
One of my college classmate, now works with me in the same team. 4 years experience. I'm single, introverted and working at a fresher level. She, on the other hand, getting married with the guy she was in relationship with, she's confident and an ambivert, she's trusted at work ( I don't think she's a very nice person though) , also she's one level senior.
She's getting married, I feel that I don't have so much. I'm kind of just trying to love through the days, I remember in college she was dumber than me. But she's good. Doing good.6 -
My standing desk (yes with a button became a standing desk) with a usb pedal that I scripted on Linux to move the mouse cursor.
There are also papers top of the monitor to help me to remember new hotkeys of Vim or other software.
My "clean" desk with a lot of fidgets that right now is quite clean.4 -
Lol I remember deleting half a production database 6 months into this job. Now a little under 2 years my boss lets me do whatever the fuck I want as long as my quality of work stays high and I complete a regular number of jira tasks a week4
-
Well I can't forgot this.
In college I met a guy with whom I passed the same subjects, we had friends in common but we never spoke until after a time (8 months later) he said: "hey can you help me with my problem? I'm doing a website and I want you to verify this database... now".
I just said "ok let's see"... When I gave him my observations he said: "thank you .. I don't remember your name right now but... don't you wanna do this website with me?".
And that's how I met one of my bestfriend and coworker.6 -
Not exactly a story since I was too young to remember, but my parents told me that I was really enjoyed playing with the games my father made for the good old commodore 64 we had.
He basically had two 5" floppy holders full of his own games and programs he used to make. Unfortunately we only have the disks now. :(
The first memory of me using the computer though, is when my father bought a computer for his office (was win 95 with the "you are now safe to switch off your computer" message) and I was sneaking in to play with paint because it was so cool back then. -
Back when I was a total noob at programming probably 6-7year back. I once fucking try to memorize even-odd number program for the practical test because I was unable to understand anything related programming.
It was like - read 20times the include statement and try to remember what was in between < >.
I totally feel embarrassed now after looking back, that silly me didn't even try programming properly.1 -
I always confuse `for..in` with `for..of` and have to look up their respective meaning. Again.
It drives me crazy.
Do you have any mnemonic on this? How do you remember the difference?
(Now, as in this very moment, I know that for..in is for looping over keys of an object and for..of for looping over iterators. But tomorrow I will have forgotten it again.)10 -
Ok, now math is starting to make sense and I'm beginning to enjoy it.
Is this a new level of the love of hurting one self or is this the act of enjoyness? Hmmm...
I noticed that I like to "reverse engineer" the formula we have to remember (I don't like remembering without knowing its benefits and reason of existence and it will most likely be forgotten after graduation when I don't find these two attributes of one formula) and I noticed that I am rather old fashioned and like to do it in a complex way instead of the derived ready formula way.4 -
I remember that my granddad and I built a computer with old crappy hardware that we disassembled from other computers.
I mostly used it for playing games like Age of Empires or Rollercoaster Tycoon.
I really don't remember a lot about but I remember I also had internet. Never got any Malware tho haha.
Then sometime my friend came over and he showed me a website named "Scratch". We made a lot of crappy games and a cat that farts when you press a button.
So yeah I instantly fell in love and did a lot of "Scratch"-ing with my brother.
That's was the time I found my love for programming.
I think about 2 years later I got a MacBook (the old from my father) and finally started with real programming!
Now, after 6 years I have an awesome little ZenBook and am programming everyday.
Love it! -
I found a budget salary for dev with 4-5 YOE in 2011 in my company, digging through internal old docs.
Assuming 2% increase per year, the 2023 budget salary is now EUR 15k more than what average dev get in my company.
I remember that someone mentioned similar thing in other socmed where he found through internal docs, salary for his position 10 years ago and now are the same, totally neglecting inflation.
On the other hand house/property values has doubled within 10 years.
How can we pressure companies to give us appropriate salary?
When I ask for increase, they will just say no because it's the market rate, but the market rate sucks.5 -
I feel like a fraud ...
So I recently joined a mobile dev company as an intern
I submitted the application
Got to coding interview passed the coding interview because thank god it was one of the sums i solved on geeks4geeks
Then came then interview did as best i could
Got the acceptance mail in next 10 mins
First day was chill it's work from home thing
Second day they gave me an app a previous intern had already build its layout and authentication code
But it wasn't working so I reported it so they told me to debug it so I found where the problem was occurring
Now I know the problem but i have no idea how to fix it
They gave me assignment to fix the authentication basically it's taking info creating a json and request an API call
But I feel i cant remember the concepts
I can't remember basic meaning of words the other day i forgot what SSID are
I just I don't know shit
And i feel like I'm going to get kicked soon
I don't understand what the previous guy wrote and i don't know how to fix it
Previously i have built my own apps but not like a real world project like this which works in regards to network management basically an wifi portal kind of Authorization application5 -
I was going to post a rant about something, but was in the middle of something so thought I'll post it later.
Now I can't remember what it was.
Also, this is not the first time this has happened :/2 -
when you think you're done coding and can finally start writing...
So you guys have seen my Unreal Engine adventures. I have to use a plugin for it, on top of everything, to extract some data. I've been using this plugin since ages on another pc, but now I had to set it up from scratch since this is a new project, new models, etc.
There is a new version. If I use the new one, it will break the chain which is to follow.
The old version is so legacy that the guy who wrote it does not remember how to set it up.
After hours, and tons of hacks and outcommenting stuff (there is physics involved with which I do nothing), it finally starts doing something. Finally!
Although I'm slowly loosing my sanity in the process....
Even if it now records the data, I cannot say if this is good enough or if the poses are all wonky now.
And that is my masters thesis. Submission deadline is on monday. Ha.
Ironically, since the start of this thesis, I felt like this will either make me or break me. ;D So much fun... FK2 -
Why the FUCK SCALEWAY DOESN'T DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT!
Arrgh. I just want it to be deleted. I clicked delete almost 3 months now. I used their service for 2 months, charged for 4.
Ok, there is the story.
> Be me
> Be broke
> Buy their 3 Euro package
> Use it for 1 month, you know, install npm, vpn and stuff
> Be broke
> You have 0 euros in your account
> Cannot log in to server couse you didn't paid their bill
> Sure, they have right to do that
> Forget about it
> Earn money
> 3 months later, remember it
> Ok, I want to delete it, couse i don't use it anymore
> Remember you used more than 1 month, so pay your debt
> There is 3 issued bills
> Try to delete account
> Wait 1 month
> They didn't deleted your account
> Fuck it, there is the money you want
> Pay all the bills, hope it ends
> Wait 1 week
> Nope
> Open a ticket
> Says it will be deleted in few weeks.
> Wait 1 month
> DIDN'T FUCKING DELETED
WHY CAN'T THEY DELETE THAT SHIT FOR FUCKS SAKE. WHAT CAN I DO FOR MAKE THEM DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT?
FUCK.9 -
So for those of you that remember my fax machine post I have an update!
We where still getting people calling up and making the fax machine ring but Amazon delivered a new fax machine today and it seems to all be working now, no more ringing fax machine!!! -
I don't like coding in the dark anymore. I think I've been doing it for about 2 years but I, just now, realized it.
I never even noticed when I started doing it. I just remember that--when the sun sets and I'm still working--I think to myself "ugh, it's too dark in here".
It just seems crazy to me because I used to love the dark. Not in the broody, ooh I'm a hacker kind of way.. just that I worked better in the dark.
I used to choose afternoon or evening shifts whenever given the choice because my brain works better when it's dark out (if that even makes sense). I used to work inside conference rooms with the lights out or dimmed.
But now, I just caught myself thinking I needed a brighter light in my home office.
Huh. I think I'm getting old.3 -
To be honest the exact bug I don't remember. I do recall that it had something stupid I had been trying to fix to get nodejs working on a raspberry pi. I finally figured it out and managed to get a simple rest server going. After hours of trying to fix what might now seem insignificant, I was not only relieved that I got it working, but also thrilled that I kept at it and managed to fix it.

I hate it when you're in a groove and the daily stand-up knocks you out of it. Now I can't remember what the hell I was even doing before it.2

Ah a Monday rant. How wonderful a day.
I cleared a project with my boss how dynamic each section on a frontpage should be. This and this needs to be dynamic on each page load. All in the beginning of the project.
Now in the end, he changes his opinion by writing to me in Slack. "Remember, that this section needs to automatically draw X from this other page."
Now I have to redo it, since I made it as static content since that is what was asked of me. Now he blames me for why I never did it correctly in the first place.
Kms. -
You know how people are making fun of duo lingo birb getting’ all in your business about learning new language & not missing out on your daily exercises?
Well, our jira just upped the ante.. Boss asks why task xy is assigned to him.. um dunno?! I go check activity, as I don't even remember doing anything with that task recently..
All the dates, 'just now' remarks etc. on activity tab are in Russian.. WTF jira?!
ты пытаешься мне что-то сказать? -
Last month, I learnt Docker via the 1 hour crash course of the YouTube video.
Now, I don't remember all the content of that video which made me think that I should start making notes.
I understand the basic fundamentals of the Contanarization and a couple of commands.
But I still feel like I'm lacking the whole picture of the docker.
I wonder what other devs do to learn new tech and also about note taking habit for revisions.6 -
Got a chance to work again on a Spring project after a few years of working with JavaSE.
All these horrible memories started rushing back. SpringJPA and its dark magic that only works unintuitively and under very certain conditions...
Ooooh boi. Now I remember. I remember it all.
Why do developers enjoy being squeezed into frameworks and enjoy spending half of a day figuring out how to make the application code compatible with the said framework rather than just writing code that they have full control over...? Masochists much?9 -
Fuck it. After spending 5 hours to get my dockerfile ready and already ranting about getting only another 5 hours of sleep I accidentally deleting the dockerfile.
And before I don't remember the important points tomorrow I decided to rewrite it now.
And who the Fuck thought writing a css precompiler in c++ is a fucking good idea. FUCK3 -
I remember when first iPhone came out, The only broken shit while browsing was panning and pinching(most of the pages did not have responsive design) but they worked. Now every fucking webpage is mobile friendly, except all of them are fucking broken! You don't have safari or Chrome? Then fuck you! Here you have this BIG fucking button that does not work. Fuck all SPA!1

Never doubt myself.
Never questioned my skills...
Because I have few skills.
I'm no dev, an amateur programmer who learned in school (best part, learned logic programming) and stopped programming for years because I had no future without an engineer University course... How mistaked I was.
So I know that I'll spend more time on google on every project I start.
Still doesn't stop me... Until I find out that I can't do what I want (like the time I made all the UI of a web app in JavaScript to use in electron and then found out that I couldn't use a file database, sq lite on that case... one month almost wasted... Almost, kept the UI as a mock up. Did the same mistake two years latter, only to remember like one week latter why I didn't use JS the last time. Doing it in python+Kivy now) I'll just keep pushing, and trying, and learning.
Never stop, never quit, only death is impossible (for now). -
Best/Worst dev experience 2017:
Well I started my DevRant-Stats site and got my RandomQuote bot up and running again (although the quotes aren't as good as before)
I also started a little company with my friend and made some sites for clients.
I reached #13 on Sololearn in Austria! Kinda proud of it.
I learned Lua and Ruby which are one my favorite languages now!
And as always I started some side projects that I've never finished...
Don't remember everything I experienced in 2017 but these are some I won't forget.2 -
Best: Public docs, especially quick start guides... That actually work.
Worst: my team's. It's basically non-existent... I'm the only one that writes docs and design diagrams and well that's mostly for myself to remember/understand stuff and use when ppl ask....
My first response is usually like: "Here RTFM... (Now go away because I have other things to do)" -
Ha! I remember now why I picked windows over ubuntu as environment for developing, I can install simultaneously apps in Windows meanwhile in Ubuntu cannot because something gets locked! And FFS the drivers! And also there's no simple way to do simple things like install and get a desktop icon without having to touch some scripts! I mean WTF!9

You know what's worse than having to come up with a new password every time you create an account? Forgetting your password every time you try to log in!
I swear, it's like my brain has a selective memory when it comes to passwords. I can remember every lyric to a song from 10 years ago, but I can't remember the password I created yesterday.
And don't even get me started on password manager software. You would think that having all of your passwords stored in one place would make things easier, but nope. I've forgotten my password for my password manager so many times that I'm starting to think I need a password manager for my password manager.
But seriously, why do we even need passwords in the first place? Why isn’t there an easier one stone kills all solution to all these password authentication nonsense?
I could remember when it was all letters, then forced to use letters + numbers…
then later forced to include symbols…
and then forced to make it lengthier…
and then solve puzzles after getting it right…
and after all the stress now we are forced to find nemo from a set of images.
I thought the misery would end there but nope. Now some platform forces 2FA like dude seriously?
For God’s sake we built self driving cars already! Why can’t one just exist without a password? Why do we always end up in a password cycle?
And please don’t say shit about oauth because if your password master (i.e: google) fucks you in the ass then all your oauth accounts are gone for good!
I'm currently having an existential crisis about the meaning of passwords in our modern society. Shit is crazy when I ponder about it I get worried.12 -
So a few months ago I created a css grid system. I ended up fucking my windows installation by playing around with shit I knew I shouldn't be playing with. And silly old me, not backing shit up obsessively, ended up losing the only copy of my grid system.
Luckily I remember how I made it.
But right now I am lacking motivation to do any serious work. So what did I do tonight?
Signed up for a hosting account
Registered a domain name (for my grid system) through my reseller account
Setup DokuWiki
And am now in the process of creating documentation for...
... A grid system that I have not [re]created.
That's some backwards ass logic right there lol -
I mistakenly denied while installing virtualbox's driver install dialogue which was set to remember settings, now no option to clear fcking INF cache in windows 10.
FCK windows.4 -
!Rant Does anyone else find it sad that the more you know about coding ,the less it all feels like magic ? I remember times i often stumbled upon websites that felt so smart, as if they where magical. Now best i can say is that they are neatly programmed. But the magic disappeared once i understood the logic behind it all. Anyone else?3

Last year my boss decided to outsource a project I did the year before to another company.
Now he wants my opinion on why this company estimates 10h to do an upgrade on a API interface I did on that project.
Like I remember details on what I did two years ago. And like I have any idea how this company is rigged to handle the project. -
The current state of wordpress "web development" makes me want to punch myself in the balls.
I remember when we coded a lot of stuff, now everything is janky drag and dropping, all plugins have premium versions with the actual features you need, templates are more and more full of dependencies that are trash. Wordpress is ruined. I want it to die already.4 -
I now remember what I was supposed to do this weekend.... (Read a Spring boot book)
Too late now... Spent most of the weekend playing scrabble instead.... Not sure why though...1 -
Remember how u all got traumatized by tapping ctrl + s several times? More than once as if once wasnt enough? That same way now i got traumatized to `git pull --rebase` more than once before i create a new branch...7
-
guuyyyssss....?
What'd just happen....?
I remember this happening quite often on Windows machines: occasionally some random popup window appears for a second or two, does whatever it does and disappears; usually it's either a cmd or a ps window.
Just a few moments ago a weird window popped up on my screen, its title bar was saying something about VisualStudio, and after ~2 seconds it disappeared.
The reasons I find this concerning:
- I don't have anything VS-related installed on my current environment
- I've been running Linux for years now
What the f did just happen...11 -
omg, I hate my managers who always make engineering design decisions, literally, my manager made shortcuts and decisions that I told him not to do, now we have to live with this shit. which can be fine, but then in 1:1 he tells me that I have a short-term vision, I am like hello you stupid piece of shit, don't you remember telling us what to do and we pushed back to you for all the dumb decisions you have made. my manager has no idea about technology and yet people listen to him for engineering decision, stupid.5
-
I remember when I first heard about the general concept of a stack, I wasn't quite sure how you would use it.
Now im learning about stacks in java algorithms class as well as learning about how the memory stack works in assembly class. This probably seems small to you pro devs, but ngl, it kinda blew my mind how useful this structure can be.1 -
Yo, remember when @Alice parodied the millenial 404 message? It was hilarious, but now it's gone :c
Has anyone saved it by any chance? I don't want this to be lost forever, it was too good :c3 -
I changed my shirt and now it looks like we're evil rivals.
I remember him telling me he has the dilemma of "clean css solution" and "quick and dirty js solution" and he always takes the second one.
My dilemma is the other way around: "Clean js solution" or "hacky, dirty css solution". I always take the second one if possible..6 -
- Hey, could you help me understanding your method? I'm trying here to implement it on my side but it doesn't work
- I'm not at home right now and don't remember the code i wrote. I will look at it when i get back home
- Ye but can you explain it briefly?
- I JUST FUCKIN TOLD YOU I DONT REMEMBER IT EXACTLY, I AM NOT AT HOME AND I DON'T FUCKIN HAVE THE COMPUTER WITH ME. WHAT HE FUCK WAS SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?2 -
I'm so god damn sick of unattended upgrades and OS updates. I've switched from Ubuntu to NixOS for a few months now already and it's the greatest thing I've ever done, because it's declarative, it's rational and it's fast. Unfortunately today I had to switch back to Ubuntu for the day, because I don't have my main laptop with me and now I remember why I hate this OS. This piece of shit garbage keeps running unattended upgrades updates when I'm doing busy work. Like I'm writing my Jenkinsfiles and sitting in work meetings and then suddenly a fucking unattended upgrade eats 100% CPU and turns my friendly laptop into a jet turbine :(((6

Even though I like a rolling Linux install that's been working for a long time, it's always fun to set up a fresh installation. Remember back when I had more time and setting up "Linux from scratch". Then there was Gentoo. Now Arch serves that purpose. Even though there is not that much time as when I was a student it's still brings pleasure starting from a clean slate. Only setting up the things you need and keeping config files clean and a nice directory structure. Keep it simple.4
-
Still remember the first time I started writing style sheets, the biggest confusion was why do they use an id where we can always use a class.
Now I know why. Only you are your identity, but there may be many people of the same class. :)2 -
I use this little guy as a rubber ducky now. He's useful when I'm trying to study stuff which is particularly hard to remember.5
-
I can already imagine in the future:
Remember back in the 10s when there was quantum computers with the size of a room for tens of thousands of dollars? Now everyone has one implanted in their head with 100 times the computing power! With the old hashing algorithms we could mine hundreds of blocks every second just with thinking about it1 -
It was in May and I had a recruiter call be up about an interview for a dev position. I went to the interview, thought it went all right and awaited feedback.
Nothing came... I called the agency a few days later and he said he'd get me something back by end of the week.
Still nothing. I called again and he was all "oh sorry, I forgot, and I'll get it tomorrow".
You can probably guess; nothing. A couple weeks pass so by now I'm pretty confident I don't have the job, so I continue looking.
Then early afternoon on a Friday in November that agency calls back:
Agency: "Hi, how are you?"
Me: "Hey, I'm fine"
Agency: "Excellent, remember that interview in May for that company?"
Me: "Yeah, why have they go another position available?"
Agency: "Better, you start work with them on Monday"
It took the guy 6 months to get back, nothing from him or the company. Then he calls up out of the blue. No idea what he would be done had I already got a job.
I actually did accept, still work there now 4 years later, for now. -
Poor specifications are the worst..
I developed an application for a client of the Company i work at.
Everything done according to what i was told, but since they cant keep/remember the specifications we agreed upon, i keep getting contacted about stuff that does not work. And everytime its because they changed something and is now not using the program as intended... anyone been in this situation?
i mean i account for the hours spent modifying, but it pisses me off..2 -
Specter and Meltdown. Remember those guys?
Well I'm curious if anyone know of some articles that talk about someone successfully using the hack. Because you know people hate updates and now I want to know if anyone has paid the price of not doing their due diligence.1 -
When I was 12 i had a Friday afternoon course, as they called it, in QBasic. Nothing fancy but I learned that 'I wanted to work with computers'.
10 years later I got my first programming job. It was with the old Cognos Powerhouse language on OpenVMS. Does anyone remember that?
I had that job for 4 years and it took me another 10 (and several other IT jobs) before I started to learn Java, which I do now for 2 years.
That's my career story in a tiny nutshell 😎 -
I'm an apprentice software engineer, have been for about a year now. I feel so dumb all the time. Used to be I'd just teach myself at my own pace for about a year or two (which was slow, on and off because of life getting in the way). Now I'm surrounded by programmers with decades more experience than me and I can't help but feel inferior.
I want to get better faster but, I work full-time now so I don't know how to supplement my studying. I've been studying linear-algebra online because my maths is crap and I remember one of my colleagues mentioning that it would be useful. But now I'm not sure because apparently discrete mathematics is better.
I also need to keep up with Java since that's what I'm learning in university but, I'm mostly using React/Typescript in my current project. By the time I finish work I don't even want to look at a line code and I lack the self-discipline to force myself to study in the evening.
I need to pick a direction and stick with it but, it's seems to just be increasingly harder as I've gone on.3 -
I remember few years back when I had subscribed to this ISP, where few months on subscription worked flawlessly. Then it was all downwards from there. Customer care never answered. Charged for bloddy whole month whilst the working was just for 2 weeks. People subscribing to this ISP had a facebook group named ISP Victim. Was forced to change my ISP.
Now, few days back they put up a stall in an IT exhibition. I went up and signed in for their service. Now they call me for setting up their network, either i tell them am not available or dont answer at all. I do the same to them what they did to me. That utmost pleasure HAHA. I shared this idea in the facebook group and people are starting to do the same.
I feel like a con artist now. -
(If anyone remember) A lot of mine two months old rants were related to one of my client who also happened to be my relative. Now this client's uncle (who is also a relative) sent a message to me and asked me if I can put one of his nephew in my company. He assured me he's a good programmer.
Are you fucking kidding me? Just like that? If he was any good, he would have got a job or at least would have done anything by himself.
P.S. When I looked at his CV, he knew almost all languages :-/3 -
Not really a dev related rant but a rant nonetheless
Why is auto renewal forced now on subscription services now? I don't want to have to cancel my service by jumping through hoops and explaining why I want to cancel it before finally cancelling it. I've had to help my parents unsubscribe from a few services because it was too confusing for them to do themselves and they've just let them suck from their wallets for half a year.
I am even angrier at long "free trials" that you are REQUIRED to enter payment information for so that they can charge you once it's over if you don't remember to cancel it after a month and a half. Can't we just go back to auto renewal being an option, please?2 -
"Show list of people not affiliated with Creed".
found this on a work breakdown I made. HAHA this isn't related to my project right now. Can't even remember writing this. lol -
A game engine library so new nobody has ever written working hotkeys for it lol
Despite being in fervent development like 4 years now and fancy 3d shaders and such
Do I contribute by publishing a hotkey library. I kinda don't wanna. Sounds like a pain.
It also baffles me rust examples are far and few in between on the internet. I remember learning older languages and there was always so many examples, pet blogs, and projects you'd find all over you could learn from. I wonder if times have just changed somehow?1 -
I don't remember how many days of configuring i3 I've been in but I just wanna move on with my life now pls2
-
Remember the rant, where I said, that I installed KDE next ho unity?? 😂 😂. Well now my xorg is crashed :( gonna reinstall everything xD but this time, I start with KDE xD
-
I’ve had knee pain for as long as I can remember, it’s just a part of having flat feet. Last night the pain flared up around 10:30pm. Went to bed at midnight hoping it would get better. I had no sleep, the pain is everywhere. My knees, my back, shoulders, head. My bones ache constantly and I don’t know what to do. I gave in and took a painkiller about an hour ago, just took an anti-inflammatory. I don’t know what’s going on, all I know is pain. My bones feel like they’re about to shatter and it’s really difficult to not go to the worst case scenario right now7

!rant about WordPress
I came across a rant about WordPress this morning. Whatever the quality of the code, there is a lot of good that has come from WordPress.
For a substantial number of people, it has made it possible for them to create their own spaces on the Web that they can use to express themselves, build businesses, and share their lives.
Remember that WordPress arrived at a time when you basically had to use a few large blog services if you wanted your own site. It wasn't perfect then (and isn't now) but WordPress did a lot to democratize the Web.1 -
Today I removed all the stickers I had on my laptop, and it looks pretty clean and better now.
I still remember the day when I would do anything to collect schwag and free stickers. In fact - I joined devRant just to get those free stickers XD.
but yesterday I had to do a presentation in my college and during the presentation, I realized how stupid it is to have a laptop filled with laptop stickers.
What I used to chase in the past, is what I am getting rid of in present. And it is true with many other things as well. We crave things and once we get them it hardly matters to us.
I sometimes wonder what life is really about, and is there anything that we can cherish forever and not take for granted?13 -
Was hired on after my schooling was done as a web dev building a front end site. Finished, made it pretty, and was kept on to help the business build their backend inventory using a CSV file into an online catalogue.
Problem is...don't remember jack shit about PHP/SQL/anything past writing basic JS functions and pretty bullshit.
Running an apache server? No problem. Creating database schema's? Sure. Past that? I have no idea wtf I am doing, have until August to figure it out, am having major imposter syndrome, and can't walk out of this place without getting the project done. Feels very hopeless right now, though I am trying my best to learn.7 -
Was told at work today that I don’t follow directions closely enough and the lack of attention to detail in my work is a problem.
I remember being this way since my first elementary school teacher pointed it out to me. I’ve always been this way. It’s how my brain is wired. No matter how hard I try, I always miss something. Especially when it is a really complex set of tasks. I’ve literally got the results of a cognitive test I took in college documenting and quantifying my working memory deficits.
You think you’ll change that now, after more than four decades of me being like this, with a performance review? Good fucking luck!8 -
Ive now waited a few days to do what i was so excited to do. Now im drunk and not sure what i was about to do. I do remember it had to do with a server tho, and im still excited :)
-
Well, fuck. I was messing with my grandma's phone settings, now she can't send or receive SMS anymore, and I can't remember how to set everything back the way it was.
Why the fuck did I have to mess with it anyway? Everything was working correctly, and now it's borked.
Sigh14 -
Part 1

Sooo, a follow up...
I talked to HoIT last week and he could see the issues, both on how my boss manages his team, but also a clear lack of resources.
He promised that I would be promoted in a some months.
Today, we had a talk with a broader audience. And everyone agrees that the current situation is unsustainable and we should do something now.
I expected HoIT to present his vision, with me as the lead of a new team. But... Nothing...
I tried to suggest the model, using his own words so he might remember.
Nothing...
Sooo anybody in need of a Team Lead/Architect around Frankfurt, Germany?? -
Installing a third OS in my PC (Manjaro, alongside Win10 and OSX Mojave). I do not remember how I configured dual boot for Win10 and OSX and now I have no clue of what I'm doing. Nothing will boot and I'm having to boot OSX through clover installed on my USB stick. Good thing I'm on quarantine and have a lot of time to play with this. Oh wait not really since I have some college work to do and I need Linux for that. Yay.8

first contact was with games. There are actually 2 events I connect with that, but I cant remember which one was first - so here you have both:
Both happened on the Computer from my dad - Windows 95 with Boost button - which of course was always active to make everything super fast :D (yeees, now I now that it actually made it 'slower')
1) Playing Lemmings from 2 Floppy’s (3.5inch 1.44bm)
Until my dad kept Disc 1 in his Jacket for whatever reason I cant remember (maybe because I played to much) and my mother had the great Idea of washing the jacket... bye bye lemmings :( never played it again since then, but still remember the music and soundefects. still love them :)
2) Trying to install AoE on the PC. But since HDDs where cheap (not) and had a ridiculously amount of space (not) (sth. ~250MB) and AoE needed ~150MB, my young and smart me came up with the amazing solution to delete the largest folder on disk, which was C:/WINDOWS. I do not have to mention that my dad was not amused ^^ -
Remember how I was - against all that was promised - assigned to a time-sensitive front-end (so definitely not my forté) project about a month ago? Remember how I struggled with the choices of how to go about it - switching from F# (Fable) to Rust (Yew) to eventually settling in with Vue and TS?
Yeah, I’m glad I went that way, even though there could’ve probably been better choices out there: my part is done now, even though it’s not quite prod ready yet (close tho), the team who’ll maintain it takes it over now, after I finish dealing with my current minor issue. And damn their front-end guy is GOOD. Makes me feel very inferior in that department. Well, I am. Back to back-end, thank you very much...
But I have an issue here, that bothers me. I’ve produced a codebase that’s obviously written on a tight schedule: no tests, no documentation, a few embarrassing hacks/workarounds and so forth. I actually feel bad for leaving it out of my hands to them in such a state...1 -
Let's go down the memory lane back to freshman year in college as a Computer Science student in my Intro to Programming class....
I remember I was lost as to how the professor created this simple variable below:
int a = 5;
I had no idea what was going on there. haha. looking back to it and seeing the projects I'm working on now puts a smile on my face..
I asked questions. Even the dumb ones and that's what helped me to now..programmers always ask mates or search.
Do you guys care to share yours?1 -
Anyone having success with google sites(Sities.google.com)?
I needed a resume page, so used google sites to create one (I know nothing about web dev) .
Now they are giving me an ugly url when i try to publish it. I remember my friends having .github.io url when they make websites using html/css which looks decent .
So how can i move this google site to git repo? i can't see any html/css code here, only the site15 -
Digital transformation is pain in the ass, my customer migrated project management from self hosted jira to atlassian cloud.
Results:
I am finally able to login to this new amazing jira that looks completely different but still nothing is optimized to laptop screen so looks crap as before.
My issues are now assigned to not existing user.
At least I remember how to use basic JQL and reassign issues to me.
I feel bad to other team members.
Great waste of time.7 -
Every fucking time I execute a program I’m popped up with yet another motherfucking update available, then after I wait for the fucking download to finish and the install to proceed I have to ‘voluntarily’ restart the system… and guess what? Windows needs to update now!!! AH! Fucking cocksuckers… If that can compare to harassment was Firefox does its plain old gang bang rape as it now forces the fucking updates.
I remember a time not long ago (I’m not that old motherfuckers) when the only update was a fucking major update namely one that allow software to either run on a new OS or work at all. Not a goddamned typo fix on the about page… FUCK OFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!2 -
What is the most shell program you have ever used? To me it is zoxide. Zoxide is like `cd`, but instead of just `cd` to the path, zoxide also remember the path, so the next time you enter the name of the directory you `cd`ed with zoxide before, it will automatically teleports you to the path. Which is very useful because now I can just type `z uluto` instead of `cd ~/Projects/Python/uluto`.5

Are any of you guys doing mobile game development? I recently started looking into this and decided I want to learn. What frameworks are good for making online multiplayer 2D and 3D games?
If anyone of you have played hide.io, that is the type of game I'd love to make. I remember a couple of years ago LibGDX was the shit, but now I couldn't find it mentioned in any recent articles.2 -
Ever wondered how Elon himself talked about not messing with AI in the past. I vaugely remember this was when there was a clash between Mark and Elon. And now Elon's companies OpenAI and Neuralink working on advanced tech. The same tech he told everyone to not mess with.
I haven't followed the trail of events clearly. But now this thought comes to my mind.
Anyone thinks the same? Or am I missing something?16 -
do you guys make a temp copy of every single object and/or variable you ever use? ive gone thru a few projects in this company and our code has so much of this. I cant remember now if there is even a good reason to do it like that. you can end up with a lot of copies! haha!8

some old time clients finally decided to pay me, so I had a bit of cash on me (I feel rich, lol).
here's the thing: I am torn in between buying a second monitor and investing in that server i planned to build in a previous rant.
I could just save the money, I dont know if I am being extra right now, I remember when I just had half a laptop screen to work with, now i have a this used 24 inch monitor I bought for cheap now I want to expand with another 24 inch probably. this arrangement will make things a bit comfortable and faster for me but it still wont affect me if I dont get it...........ok I'm talking too much5 -
I got my first PC when i was 8 years old.
I played games, and just played around with the computer configurations etc..
I also remember in my English class, I was asked to say what i wanted to be when i grow up, so I told the teacher: "When i grow up, i want to become a computer"
well who's laughing now b*tch1 -
So my phone updated to Android 5.1.1 (can't remember the actual number of the update) against my will. I chose no a couple of times. One day I woke up and pop! New version for you! Yay!!!
Now my battery is draining faster then ever before. Camera is freezing sometimes. I hate you Lenovo. My Vibe K5 was such a glorious phone, for my use of course, but now it's just a desk phone since it's always plugged in a power outlet 😒5 -
Oh... You maybe remember this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/5509306
I completely forgot about it, it is still running and alive.
I now have 1.123.954 rows in this database :) and it is nearly 80MiB in size.

In this file you can see who gained most/least points in the timespan of collection.
Congrats to @kiki @Demolishun @fullstackclown (top 3)10 -
In 2011,when i was 12, i was playing Garry's Mod with a couple of friends, and i don't remember the circunstance, but one of my friends said: "I wonder how games i made". I have no idea why i was never curious about this subject before, since i played A LOT of videogames, but this question did stick to my mind, so i decided that i would search about it. Searching, i discovered that Garry's Mod used the Source engine, and that it was made in LUA. Tried LUA. Understood very little. Lost my interest. And then, i would only attempt to program again back in 2015, where i learned C++ in high school. Then i learned SQL, and now learning Java. I also discovered that i LOVE programming, and now i have plans to graduate on CS.

I remember when I was on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04, there was that weird glitch on TeXstudio where it initiated a system shutdown signal when I just press on the power button, even for less than half a second.
And now, I don't have this problem on Xubuntu. I still don't know what were the circumstances of this glitch, but I don't think I need to bother about it for now lol -
Anyone else remember at googles summer of code in 2006-ish google catching heat for hiring strippers to give the male devs lap dances ?
those were they days ! I wanted to work for google so much after that.
we need to bring the debauchery into development lol
notably, google has erased all evidence of that new story now that they have become staffed baby raping, tree hugging, snarky fucking homosexual clowns.
and btw i am an environmentalist and I don';t care if someone is actually gay. I'm also practical and like boobs. unfortunately i don't think thats whats working at google.35 -
How many people can say they've read just about every rant posted? I remember when I first started I didn't have much to do and read all the way back, now I feel as though I've committed myself to this and refuse to miss any rants!
Thanks so much DevRant!!!1 -
Wanted to benchmark some Javascript yesterday. Stayed up all night making a Javascript benchmarker and now I can't remember what I wanted to benchmark 😿 (I know jsperf exists but I wanted my own)
-
Can’t remember the longest “consecutive hours” session, but had a few work days that probably lasted 14 hours ( had breaks though )
Did however do 7 months of work days starting at 6am and ending at 5pm, but had two long breaks most days.
Also did a 21 day working streak once, skipping 3 weekends.
Now I work comfortably 😬 -
I remember when fashion looked like this. But now… what happened? Since when exactly did people turn into living billboards for overpriced brands?4
-
I think studying engineering has really fucked up the way i learn new things...i find it nearly impossible to commit anything to memory that could easily be looked up. On its own it doesnt sound so bad but now I keep forgetting simple programming syntax and android design patterns because my brain just keeps saying
"You dont need to remember this, you can find it online is 2 mins"
Id rather just keep a bookmark of a great navigation drawer tutorial as opposed to learning it myself...i worry now what will happen in my technical interviews even though I consider myself a good programmer -
I have to switch from FreeBSD to Linux for a project because the implementation has to be done on a Linux box. So I now see the deep internals of Linux for the first time in 10 years and it still feels so unclean and chaotic. It feels so even more then I remember it to feel when I have left it. You guys are sure that this is the future?4
-
I don't know what but our customers have put new terms in our contacts. That essentially make us liable if we don't take certain measure to protect the access to stuff.
To me that means I have to log out of my computer whenever I leave my seat. I was told its not necessary if I go to toilet. So I set the computer to require login after 15 min of not doing shit. Usually I remember that and log out manually so that's just precautions measure.
Today before I got lunch, I forgot. And my boss happened to notice my computer was on within that 15 min after I left.
I got a warning.
Fuck this shit. I now set th timer to 1 min.
Now I need to login again and again if I'm reading docs or article.
Fucking shit.2 -
Working with JSF + Primefaces. I was a junior and I remember it was hell. Maybe I'd do OK with those tools now. Who knows.3

When you need to fill an array with a database that has over 10000 rows and took hours to import, and you remember you truncated the database.. I hate my life now.2

How do people remember to use and take off reading glasses? I had a caterat removed last week so the glasses I need are now reading glasses instead of the ones I use all the time.6

I hate Vue framework with a passion. The only framework that can rival Vue in terms of being bad is: Apache Wicket for Java.
<template #activator="{ on, attrs }">
<v-btn
v-bind="attrs"
v-on="on"
What does this all mean? I remember seeing these 1 month ago but by now I forgot all about it again. This is nonsense; and the worst part is discoverability: there is no easy way to learn what does this mean, navigate to definition (where "on" is defined?) or something2 -
I remember some years ago a phone call between my boss and a customer.
The customer wanted a website from us, and my boss told him what it would aproximately cost (it wasn't very much).
Customer got upset and said "How can it be so expensive? You're not saving lifes, are you?"
It never came to a contract, and I now work at a real company ...2 -
PO: "Remember guys, protect your scope!"
.. moments later, after the PO meeting..
PO: "I want you to do user story x but I want it changed this way"
me: "Ok"
*pling* notification: PO changed jira story
*I work on it for a few hours*
me: "Is this what you wanted?"
PO: "Yeah, actually I made up my mind. I want you to implement it totally different and scrap what you added now"
me: "Thanks for wasting my time bro"
me: *codes*
.. a few hours later, mid-coding..
PO: "Uh, yeah, changed my mind. The way you did it now is ok, but I want something else added"
*3 iterations of the same crap later*
me: "Sigh, make up your minds!"5 -
My little journey of regrets:
I remember when I was fourteen, I opened a small gap the door of "programming". It were the first steps of html, tags and what they do, to be precise.
"May, looks good. Thanks for the glimpse. Cya"
For about the other half of my life only magic happened at my desktop.
And now I'm standing once again at the door of programming trying to breach it with nukes n shit.
"Giev me all the knowledge plx, teach me senpai! I will never ignore and betray you again!" -
My dreams are getting so weird i'm keeping a dream journal now.
If only I could draw/3D model/remember things a while.2 -
Tooday i try to migrate a Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 ... I think that migrate module from drupal8 will work easily... But i remember on Drupal, noting work as expected on this Platform... I run the migration and suprise suprise content type field are off or empty and I don't have any data imported ...
Go to reports check the error message ... Try to get information on Internet hoo yes i remember no fucking documentation anywhere because Yolo i need to release 1626 modules that in beta or alpha after 5 years of development. And i dont give shit anymore.
Now i try use migrate_plus and tools to make my custom importation... Documentation not found or not finish ... Please omg please just shutup and work1 -
Started developing an interest in programming after creating warcraft 3 maps using the world editor. I still remember those days where I used the gui trigger editor, where I don't even know the difference between local and global variables, preventing memory leaks by using leak check and etc. Creating new skills using triggers was so exciting. Then I discovered JASS, but I didn't really learn or use much about it. Now I'm working in Unity3D and it is awesome!2

I tell a designer at the company to take a look at a (huge) corporate web project we're currently building. He's not assigned to the project, but I thought a fresh eye and recommendations could be good for future Sprints, since we're doing a first release in a month.
The guy knew all of this, yet his "designer a.k.a artistic spirit" couldn't hold him from sending a UI/UX review to the PM, of about 6-7 pages or smth - I dont even remember now.
The whole report had a total misunderstanding of the business logics, because he didn't even wait for me to explain that shit to him. Eventually his versions of UX suggestions were irrelevant. It was pretty funny, now that i think about it.
I'm guessing he just hoped to get some attention...?
tldr: its fucking disgusting when designers try to act as artists;2 -
I started with a free trial of neobook (anyone remember that?), and then moved on to MS SmallBasic. At some point I had discovered Roblox and was stuck with that and lua for a few years. Eventually I started learning C# from a course, but never really used it much so I kinda forgot it.
School got a lot more busy for me and so I wasn't really able to do much programming for a few years, and even when I did, it was mostly bash and docker stuff. Then in the beginning of last year, I was able to start learning Go, which is now my current language of choice. -
DevRant Stress Ball Rant.
Today, I was like its time to finally mail and get myself one of them stress balls.
Turns out it requires 300+... arrghhhhh. Damn it. When did this happen? Was it always 300+? I remember seeing 200+ before.. Damn...was I too late or was I mistaken? I guess it's going to increment even more since the community continues to grow.. *sigh* :(
Now I guess I would need a blood sacrifice or something to get anywhere near those numbers..5 -
OMG! I just realised one new thing about how people implement Entity Component System library... I'm good to start all over again x) well I don't even remember how many time it happened now ^^"
-
Another follow up. All these apps I m using to analyze the logs now, I apparently built years ago when I had 20% time or slack.
Even I don't remember that I already built some of them...
I was actually thinking ", wouldn't it be great if we could download all the logs at once for a specific API and date?" and then I open my AiO WPF app and it has button titles Logs Downloader... and it's located next to another that I found a few days ago, Logs Analyzer.
This stuff is going in a blog post I hope.... So guess you can just think of these as keynotes. -
Remember the option on mobile browser that says “View as Desktop”. Today that sh*t no longer works on most modern websites. Now I am wondering what in the freaking c*ck s*cking html has changed overtime!5

So I just refreshed LinkedIn and it has a new look.
It's so bad I can now remember Microsoft bought LinkedIn a couple of months back every time I look at it1 -
Are AMD chips now on par, better then Intel's now?
About 10yrs, Intel beat AMD hands down. My dad bought an AMD quad core around then but the performance was probably no better and an INTC 2-core if I remember.
After that I always bought Intel i7s.
But now wondering has AMD caught up?11 -
see now this is the f-ing shit that pisses me off.
There is this project named dain.
One time I made a project that dropped frames using opencv or ffmpeg i can't remember, creating a test output file and ran them through dain to benchmark it for myself.
alot of things just like this actually I tended to do to get a better sense. Its the reason I abandoned the NN since I think I have a feel for how to design them for certain tasks and remember that with my 'successes' i was still really far off from where i'd like to be.
additionally there are other kinds of ml that interest me more that I am not seeing too much on... point is
I worked all this crap out
got wavenet working to check on it YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS ago and because the dirty fucks out west kept stealing my stuff, i end up back at square one waiting for some douchebag to steal my stuff again who isn't even going to do anything but pretend he's straight or pretend everything has some faggot meaning. its very annoying. why do these people live this way again ?3 -
So remember when I said I had a member in thesis who's sort of the 'connections' guy? And this guy doesn't show up most of the time because he's 'busy'?
Well it turns out he becane editor-in-chief of the school's yearbook!!! I mean I don't mind him doing his thing but why now?!?! Dude set your priorities straight! Do you wanna finish this thesis and graduate or proofread/edit every yearbook entry you get?!
Well we told our advisor about this and he said: 'So he's basically a parasite?' and we just laughed outlr heads off. We'll see what tomorrow brings us. -
Soo It is known, that seeing things from your past makes you remember distant memories, feelings, smells etc.
For example, if you play a song on repeat for a week, and then don’t play that song a few years, and then play that song you will then remember in detail the week, that is now associated with the song.
Sooooo does a service exist that allows you to watch past tv shows, in their original time slot, day etc.
I know a lot of streaming services have the whole old shows thing but non like i describe.
I remember growing up in the 90s, and early 2000s every day before school watching the kids game shows, before the news turned on or vise versa.. but it was a solid routine same shows, same times etc.. then on the weekends or after school the same thing...
Sooo if there was a way to stream the original scheduled programming for any given date, and channel that would be awesome, and it may even lead you to understand certain things, make new connections connecting the present to the past etc...
Just late night thoughts5 -
Need some advice on RAM,
So I’ve a laptop with 8GB ram and I am planning on a upgrade, now if I remember correctly I CAN add a 16Gig stick and it’ll be 24gig, but is it a good call to have different sized ram.
PS. Suggest a ram
Current RAM : HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH
Hynix
P.P.S - I’ll obviously add RAM of the same frequency10 -
I cant believe how powerful and FAST nextjs is. Very smooth and lightweight. Easy to work with.
Also angular became super fast and smooth. 5 years ago in 2018 i remember working in angular and it was not that fast. The project structure was a bit messy. But now everything has drastically improved and became simplified.
I love both now. Happy to be working in both2 -
Has RAM quality just fallen off the deep end? I swear I remember a BSOD could mean just about anything, now it seems to be failing RAM every time.
Also, why am I troubleshooting it? I know a few programming languages, so suddenly I can fix anything plugged into a wall?14 -

I just woke up from a fun adrenaline packed film dream.
It started like an movie, leaning a bit into the funny side, but also a bit serious.
We were 3 guys going top speed on the highway, dodging traffic, trying to prevent a bomb from detonating on the other side of the city.
We were all famous actors, but the only one I remember was Jackie Chan. I remember thinking why would they cast Jackie Chan and give him so few lines.
I wished I remember more about this part. The only thing I remember is that when we get to the end of the island, we’re in the wrong place: we’re at a huge OBGYN center.
My sidekicks are bothering the desk women, eating all of the “waiting candy”. I feel bad and offer to pay those, which they pretend to not care about but then end up charging me down to the penny. Cunts.
The sidekicks leave and (without explanation because dreams) disappear of the story.
Defeated, I go outside and start walking.
And I don’t remember exactly what the fuck happened in between, but somehow I’m now in the house of a cartel druglord and he’s pissed and I need to run now.
So I do. I remembered that there was a very thick forest east to the house. So I go there.
And what follows is a very intense montage of me escaping.
At some point that forest ended, so I continue through some high weed, and then another forest, and so on. While I had to pass through parts with no vegetation, I had to avoid these as much as possible.
I saw dozens of types of trees and shrubs.
Then I started seeing families, kids, playing, relaxing on what seemed a Sunday afternoon.
The adventure was so fun, the landscape was so beautiful I felt happy and thought “this is how it feels to be alive”. And I actually felt happy in real life as well.
At some point the vegetation I encounter decreased, and I have to go through more urbanized areas, with more people.
“Uh oh” I think, “I hope no one snitches me”. But miraculously, no one does.
Throughout all the journey I had glimpses of the drug lord nearby presence.
His face on the distance, the sound of his car engine.
But now he was closer than ever. And I’m closer to this house which is the escape point (can’t really remember why).
So I reach for the handle and fade to white, and fade back again, it’s me, older, and I’m not in an escaping mood.
My wife is waiting, our car is outside (on the non drug lord side).
And guess what, we were waiting for our daughter, who comes with a smile and a child on her hands.
So apparently, my daughter married someone from the drug lord villa that almost murders me.
Reading this sounds like a bad script, but that’s what I dreamed today.1 -
Last night I dreamt of nothing but meetings and troubleshooting my app. On the plus side I feel like a true Dev now, on the minus side I don't remember a single solution I had.

This is not a rant, but I've searched this for some time now and can't seem to find it so maybe any of you will be able to help me.
A good few years ago, when I was still a 4-5yo I had a Win95/98 (I don't remember which). We used to have this CD that had a bunch of games, like Chucky Egg or Mahjong, or a xmas-related one (where you could bake cookies, serve drinks - there was a red and a yellow one - and more I don't remember), one with a (purple?) dragon (in a dungeon, that was played in levels, but every run was randomly generated, I think), and many more.
The CD was white with black text, and had a yellow-ish/orange-ish grinning face, that looked like a man's, with a few hairs, that was drawn simply, nothing too complex. I also know there was this one game that made the computer/game freeze, and that was in a blue palette?
I played the crap out of that CD with my mom, and she used to play the dragon one for me (until she found out Mahjong), but it all ended when it broke inside the tower and we had it replaced by the WinXP tower we currently have at home (and that's in pieces because me and my brother disassembled it).
I know it's not much, but does any of you remember anything like what I just wrote? It should be from around the 2000s and probably from a gaming magazine.5 -
Need help/advise: 💻 Anyone's experience with Linux on MacBooks - I've had a lot of tried, including Arch, Ubuntu, Cent and probably more I can't remember.
🔴The issue is always the Desktop manager / UI / Window manager: either it's too 👹 ugly, or too heavy(read Ubuntu default).
Want to find the ultimate compromise with reasonable support for hardware, yet with high usability.
Things like multi-touch gestures are a bonus🔥(I know there's extra bins I can install for that)
I don't mind something more to configure, but would rather stick with apt-get and similar rather than having to manually build everything 😉
As you probably understood by now - I need something close to MacOS yet Linux based 😎8 -
you know now I remember why I stopped watching downton abbey.
downton abbey got depressing as shit
mr mercedes got stupid
the upcoming season of dr death I didn't like when I saw it, because well, its really just about a new psycho doctor killing people eh ?1 -
Every week you meet with the loneliest dumb person explaining what you had already explained the last week.
Even now I remember the week that it all started. It all happened when I got the job 😅 -
having a DSA interview in 2 days, any suggestions on how/what to prepare?
its been years since i tried solving coding problems with anything apart from strings or arrays( and that too the one we use in dev, like writing a function to convert string to uppercase, that's all i remember)
There are a million algorithms: knapsac, djikstra, DFS BFS, bellman ford, TRIE, BST, quick sort, merge sort, insertion , binary search... these are some buzz words i could remember from my early college days, 6 years ago. I was able to understand and learn them at that time, but now i know shit about them :/
How to go with all of these in 48 hours?6 -
I've got this... thing. I built it when I first started with PHP. It's an OAuth2 system to pull form data from a service into a plugin, to make the rest of marketing's lives easier. It requires manually taking the initial received token and putting it into a database when doing the first auth. Occasionally it breaks and I have to try and remember the steps to get a replacement token to start the cycle over.
Someday I'll fix it, but for now... Let's fuck about with my browser for a few minutes to get the new token. -
My Windows Computer is crapping out more and more with each "update".
Currently, it often hangs when shutting down or restarting. Completely out of the blue!
Like, I remember it updated itself a few days ago and now I have random problems, crashes and a few more bloat-/spyware apps that I didnt order.
Also, windows added a few more cryptic services to my OS that now phone home to all countries all around the world.
This is a nightmare!3 -
I remember when I first heard about nodejs. I was like " o boy that's what's called thinking out of the box!! ". Now whenever I want to motivate anyone I tell them about ryan Dahl.1

So I was writing some text and from time to time it moves me to beginning of line, but I am dumb and miss keys sometimes. I was trying to write fast, click something wrong and bam - fucked my text.
But actually fucking not, there is some shitty bug on my Manjaro machine for sure and usually hard to reproduce (happens in Firefox at messenger, libreoffice at writer) and now on fucking godot after two seconds it moves me to start of line every fucking time.
I am not even sure if it is just Manjaro stuff, because I don't remember if it happens on Windows, too -
Thanks monkey patching, now I remember why I hate Ruby so much.
Compare https://github.com/ruby/ruby/... with https://github.com/rightscale/...
I wonder how the fuck it even works. Also I'm amazed by countless hours of labour wasted digging through this pile of shit. (BTW thanks JetBrains for making it a bit less miserable)
Oh, and someone did monkeypatch Object#try! (which is also a monkeypatch by active_support) and then replaced all `#try` calls to `#try!`. WHY.JPG. Also how the fuck did it pass code review?! -
Did I miss something?
why do I remember img tag <img src=https://test.com> used to include cookies of test.com with samesite flag None from cross-origin.
But now it just don't
I am confused
