My last night:
- Had nothing much to work on.
- Opened a porn site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good video.
- Realized full screen isn't working on the page.
- Fired up JS console, spent the next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.
Bad UI = No Fuck.23 -
By day, I'm a developer.
At night, I'm a father of two awesome kids and a husband to a fantastic wife.
Stop fucking asking me to work after hours! Just because you sacrifice your life to the office doesn't mean we all do.16 -
The moment an other team couldn't deliver for a deadline. CEO came to me, gave me 50 bucks told me to get a pizza and some hash and just work the night and deliver the damn app. So I did. Got a week holiday for free in return. One of the best guys I worked for.42
-
Girlfriend = zero productivity!
I like to work at night! When I can hear myself think. Girlfriend is jealous of my code! Argues with me to come to bed and then I lose my inspiration.22 -
* Starts work with boss
* Works till night
* Decide to continue the next day
* Both leave work at the same time
* Both arrive at work next day at the same time
"Hey is the work done?"
Oh forgive me for not fucking dreaming up the work in my fucking sleep.5 -
My roommate was sleep talking last night. She said: "It doesn't work!"
I wonder if she was debugging in her sleep...4 -
CEO hired graphics designer without HR help after first meeting and that person first day of his work borrowed money from people and that’s not end of story.
Same guy came back at night and robbed the workplace with his friends, didn’t came back to work. Company bought couple of big iMac for new graphics department back then, all gone.
When company reported incident to Police it turned out he travel and steal from companies all over the country and they’re trying to catch him for a year.11 -
Came home late last night and told my wife I'm skipping dinner to take a 1hr nap as it's going to be a long night of bug fixing and testing. Woke up, my wife and 1yr old son are already asleep. Saw the pic below posted on the wall above my work area at home. She's a teacher, she's never heard me mention it, and I don't use this method (I prefer music on my headphones). But she does know I lurk devrant so she must've browsed here while I was napping. Feels good. Code fixed, checked-in, unit tested and released for user testing.6

Story of my life. Staying up all night to work on something that gets postponed or cancel
Source: http://commitstrip.com/en/2013/...4 -
When you had to solve multiple server issues during the night and you're on the train on your way to work fighting to keep your eyes op😴en5
-
It's 3:30AM and I'm working.
If you work at night, no one can interrupt you.
If you sleep during the day, you can't attend any zoom meetings.
Also, at night you can work naked, and drink on the job without any judgement.
All problems solved.10 -
Last night I had a virtual machine up on my Mac running Arch Linux. I had 6 of my 8 gigs of ram allocated to the VM. Well I left it open last night when I went to bed and forgot about it this morning. My wife just called me at work to say something is wrong with the Mac. "Everything is running slowly and it looks different." I had to walk her through the process to shut it down, but she got to run her first Linux command: sudo shutdown now.
She is now calling herself a hacker...6 -
No work is going to be tolerable if you don't enjoy it. If you got into programming or IT or any industry simply for the money you can earn doing it, you're in for a BAD TIME.
I love computers, linux, programming, configuration, automation, and problem solving. So I love what I do. I am currently three weeks into 13 weeks of parental leave, and I have been having dreams about work at night.
The best piece of advice I can offer to someone who has trouble getting motivated is: make sure to like it first.10 -
Told my wife I'll be home by 10 in the night, but when I got back she started screaming at me. Does binary not work when drunk? 🤔8
-
I called into work today and was completely honest with my boss. I needed a mental health day after a huge break down last night. He completely understood and asked if there was anything he could do and told me to take care of myself today.7

Late night programming with pops.
This man has taught me most of what I know and I have a terrific amount of respect and debt for him, and his work.
Here's to a lot more years cranking that genius brain of his! 🥂12 -
Hey devRant. What the fuck is up?
I'm new and just wanted to say hi or whatever. I don't even work in any computer science related job. I'm a fucking welder.
I have aspirations one day to be just like you nerds. I fall asleep at my desk almost every night taking random online programming classes which I lose interest halfway through to some OTHER class and redo the same shit.
Is this what it's like to be smart?36 -
From the director of the department within a large investment bank: "We will be looking into converting all Java code to Cobol because it is easier to work with".
Needless to say I started looking for a new job that night.6 -
Everyone's asleep.
I'm not tired, and coding sounds like the best thing ever right now. Figured out a solution to that blocking architecture issue, too. So: headphones on, blare Amon Amarth and Disturbed, bring up editor. It's time to work on that side project!
Best night in months.7 -
I hacked this mini-project yesterday night, Computer generated photo-montage by scenes extracted from the movie.
It's an end to end python script which will work for any video and a high res poster.28 -

It's raining. I love it.
It's foggy. I love it.
But I live in a desert and nobody here seems to know how to handle the rain, let alone the fog. (It isn't hard, people!) Last night during my ~30 min drive home from work, five separate accidents/collisions happened just a little ways behind me because it was raining. Now it's foggy, too.
I have to go to work.
I'm scared.12 -
I have spent the entire night trying to debug a login function but it keeps to not work, until I discovered a typo in the username.
Good night1 -
In the darkest of days, I discovered how to remote login to my computer at work through the company vpn. I then proceeded to work overtime at night in secret for a week or so, writing documentation and refactoring code.
I finally woke the fuck up and realized that I shouldn't be obsessing over proprietary codebases that do not belong to me, and I should put this misguided energy into my own projects.
So yeah, as a bad dev habit I'm working on fixing, this fits the bill.4 -
So I worked on getting a server ready for about 30 hours last week to be ready for a deploy on Monday Night (last night). Not only did I work on it for 30 hours, we had two other architects and a senior engineer working on it too. We got everything done Friday and it was ready to go with a simple cutover on Monday night.
The only thing left to do was deploy a link change Monday night on the existing landing page. My part was the backend servers and application that had the complicated SSO system and the other part was just a link to get to the SSO. I asked the person responsible for deploying the landing page's link if he was ready about a dozen times. He kept saying he was deploying X (the code name for the project deploy) and that is all he was doing.
Now jump to that night. They have decided that a single landing page wasn't enough and they were going to deploy a full CMS. Well no one knew what the hell was going on and they didn't realize that the landing page was hosted externally on another host. After arguing for two hours they delayed the deployment for multiple days. 24 hours later they are still trying to figure out the CMS on a host.
30 hours and four senior engineer's time wasted to get everything done for the deadline all to be canceled because of on jackass's lack of planning. WTF2 -

It's one of those nights again. It's so hot that I'm constantly sweating my fucking ass off and its near impossible to ventilate here. Fucking irritated for some fucking reason and questioning all my fucking life and work decisions yet again.
I don't fucking need this right now. Have to get up in 6 hours but oh boy is this going to be a long night.14 -
Devrant black theme is here! Thanks to @Floydian and @Stuxnet for the idea and the tag! You can also grayscale all images, for that late night devrant viewing.

I spend a night in the woods from time to time. 🏕️ It really gets you grounded and helps to take a step back on all those dev / work related issues.9
-
It was about 10 at night I thought I was the only one at work. I had my favourite music playlist on, there I was singing and dancing to the music with my headphones on.
With me sitting in a position not seeing the door, my boss and a client walked in and was in hysterics laughing at me 😂2 -
Found this on /r/battlestation last night. I really like to have such neat and nice setup when I can afford in future (I hope). But have one question.
Is it suitable for non-gamers?
I'll be using it for coding, work, movies, etc. I don't think I'll play any game that seriously ever.26 -
last night i was searching for a way to check the battery charge level of my bluetooth headset on linux. None of the workarounds seemed to work for me. I did some research on how bluetooth devices communicate over socket and wrote a python script to do the job. I'm sharing it here. It may be useful for you too.

The security blog is up again, I fixed the bug.
Just wondering, why did it work in the first place? I simply required a composer autoloader twice but I've been doing that from the beginning and it didn't play up until last night...
I guess it shall remain a mistery 😞82 -
Ok, it’s been a loooong fucking day.
28 hours later from starting work yesterday, preparing for a giant deployment over multiple systems, Doing deployments overnight... on a Friday night of all days and finally, finally seeing everything working is just a beautiful thing.
Good night devRant!1 -
Overheard 2 colleagues having an interesting telephonic meeting late night at my room.
Dev 1: Wait. I am trying to fix it.
Dev 2: Ok. Take your time
Dev 1: Shit. I found it. I knew I was doing something wrong here.
Dev 2: Oh. Nice. What was the bug?
Dev 1: It was a super silly mistake. Don't want to tell. Folks will laugh at me.
Dev 2: Don't worry. It happens with everyone. Come tomorrow at office, and whisper it in my ears. Noone will know.8 -
I work for a "Visionary" in our org. Motherfucker will use something for five minutes and decided it's the new-hot, and off we go chasing it.
"I did a Python + AWS tutorial last night, I get it. We need to start migrating everything to Lambda today."
A week later he hits his first error message that needs more than five minutes of work to solve and we're moving to a local Haskell stack.4 -
So some ass**** stole the battery of my scooter over night and I got too late to work and missed an important meeting. Nice. Thanks for nothing?5
-
I'm seeing a pattern here... We devs/testers/sysadmins/etc. don't get to spend too much time outside... We talk about different stuff than most people... We are more intelligent than most people so we don't get their dumb jokes... Most of us like to work at night because that's the time when nobody bothers us...
We don't get a chance to find a girlfriend, we don't understand how it works...
We are doomed13 -
It's raining in Chennai, India.
Flooding in quite a few areas.
The areas hit bad are where the IT companies have set up shop. More rain is expected .
If you know guys from here please check and see if they're OK. It was almost impossible to get back home from work for many people last night.
Uber was charging 600% more for a ride.
Hope you guys from Chennai are safe.8 -
I get pissed when somebody takes me out of my coding mindset for something minor. A deep bubble of abstract thought gets popped so that I can be told that we'll be eating dinner in an hour. I then have to start my thought processes from scratch.
This is why I can't get any work done during the daytime, and why I do all my coding at night.
This comic depicts this issue perfectly.3 -
This one gave me an idea for a kind of a desktop app launcher that lets you place the applications for procrastination in such a way that they are behind the planet during the day so you are a lot less likely to see the shortcut and want to use them; and likewise for the applications, one uses for work to be hidden during the evening/night cuz no one wants to see that after work.
Not really a particularly strong idea and I'd probably not support it myself if someone else brought it to me but hey, just an opportunity to try coding something different and learn more stuff.8 -
A glass of cognac, a blotter of LSD, go to the spa for a massage, turn on some Sibelius, Mahler or Tchaikovsky, and play Factorio all night.
Sometimes I also just work on my forever unfinished SciFi novel.
Or I install FL studio to realize 30 minutes later that I'm about as musically gifted as a pile of bricks.
Recently I was fed up with work and made a nice new bed for my daughter out of cherry & oak wood. Carpentry is a nice distraction from coding.4 -

Wife had a dream last night that I cheated on her and we got divorced. She woke up mad at me. It’s now 12 hours later and I just picked her up from work... she’s still mad at me.12 -
So, after months of work and many painful night, i finaly learnt java and published my first android app. Yay!11
-
Man it's midnight and all I want to do is work. 5 hours from now I'll be dragging out of bed to go to work where nothing gets accomplished. In 17 hours when I drag in from work I can do real work for 7 hours before crashing while wishing I could just code through the night. It's an infinite loop and I dont know how to fix it!10
-
So my office is located in the oldest part of the hospital I work at. Weird shit happens here, especially at night. Currently working on configuring our security cameras, stand by for triply shit.12
-
So a few months ago I started dating. I love my girlfriend with all my heart, but something has been bothering me a bit. I can no longer easily do my day-to-day work. Whereas previously I would be productive at any time I want, now it's more of a "I can work whenever she wants to work". It's hard to balance and even harder to actually get to it.
Previously I would stay with her during the day, and then wake up in the night to do all the household chores, learn her language and if I can get to it, even improve some of my shitty code. Needless to say, she didn't like that I didn't sleep with her and it's not exactly healthy either - I barely slept at all.
How do you balance work/relationship without throwing sleep time in the mix? Both work and girlfriend are at home for me.7 -
Rant.
So I work in the service desk and the moment and one of our clients use Mac's.
One of the end users called up saying that it was being slow and sluggish.
End user: hi my Mac is being slow.
Me: when did you last reboot it?
End user: last night
*Remotely connects*
*Runs uptime in terminal*
Me: are you sure you rebooted it last night?
End user: yes I close the lid every night...
The up time was 68 days...9 -
I decide to come by scooter and the weather goes crazy!
Weather predictions are "Heavy rain to very heavy rain" for the next few hours!
Fortunately, I have a work-all-night-take-next-day-off policy (which my manager frowns upon but is cool with!)
So, code-mode ON! 😎5 -
That moment when you realise you sit in front of a computer all day at work to afford sitting in front of a computer all night at home.2
-
The wife is asleep. The two year old wrecking ball of a boy is asleep. Wanted to finish a library to run kafka/grpc for nodejs microservices with plug and play functionality.
Make some tea. Figured the caffeine will keep me up. Maybe work late night. It'll be fun.
Then diarrhea hits. Now, staying up late because apparently I ate something I shouldn't have. Don't you hate it when that happens?11 -
Try pair programming! I've never had an official pair programming session, but I'll be damned if my best code and quickest solutions didn't come from having a bitch session with my coworker. Just having to talk it out or having that second set of eyes can work wonders. Plus you have a built-in de-stressing outlet to help you sleep at night.3
-
My coworkers are all working remotely because they're hungover, and all shocked I'm in the office today.
You think a night of drinking and 4 hours of sleep is enough to hold me down? Please. If I'm hungover enough to not go to work it means I'm probably in the hospital lol.
That being said, I have discovered that scotch does not agree with my stomach, so I'm not having the best time. At least I'm here though!9 -
Past few weeks, I have started to work late night and sleep whole day. I go to office at around 7pm and returns back next day 8-9am. I found it super productive.
But, my manager wasn't happy about it and now, she shifted daily scrum at 1 PM and emailed me to make sure I attend it daily.
Now, I have to fix my sleeping cycle... Nights are so great to work. Silent and nobody around.
Now, from tomorrow, I got a new challenge everyday to make it to scrum daily.6 -
To the people talking about boats on the other side of the cubical wall, FUCK YOU! YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING FOR 45 MINUTES! DO YOU WORK? I HOPE YOUR BOATS ALL GET RUST. I worked 12 hours on Sunday, got 4 hours of sleep, pulling a full day, then depending on how much work I get done work all night again. RESPECT MY QUIET ZONE!!! Uncouth peasants!undefined 3 years of friends repeats wife has the show on repeat boats rust no sleep i know it all friends reference rust is boat cancer pissed off13
-
Dreamt I was writing code for work last night, pretty sketchy stuff. But then at some point I woke up, and in my daze panicked thinking that I'd actually written that code. So when I fell back asleep, dream me was working on fixing all the issues that I actually had never writen. Woke up again, worried about if I had left everything well, and realized my stupidity.
I need some days off... 📴2 -
My boss just declared that every first Friday of every month would be LAN Party night. We bring our own PC or console or whatever and just play games all night (after work). Boss man will bring food. It's optional of course but god damn this is soooo good3

!dev but still rant
So I'm a photocopier technician by day, alcoholic coder by night. Just spent 3 fucking hours trying to diagnose a black line on print outs, checked drums, dev units, toner cartridges, fusing unit, everything...
Called up one of the guys I work with and they said to come back with some samples to try and pin it down...
I turn around to leave and remember I didn't check the transfer belt and lo and behold it isn't cleaning and is smearing the paper...
3 fucking hours to work out such a simple error, I've had program breaking bugs diagnosed and fixed by then... ugh -.- -
My week at glance:
Monday: Sunday night hangover
Tuesday:Prepare report for progress meeting.
Wednesday: Progress meeting
Thursday:work little bit for next week progress meeting.
Friday: weekend fever and hence not in mood to work.

Don't you just love it when you're waiting on a team member in a different country to push code that you NEED to be able to finish your job, but you know they've already gone home for the night and you're stuck reading the same three doc pages for your entire day at work? Because I sure do
-
Yesterday night I was driving by train. And I overheard a random dude how he is studying computer science. Drunk me decided to give him some advice, so I told to use github. Instead of using ubuntu he should try out arch or gentoo, to learn how all parts work together. But because I was pretty drunk, I probably confused him more, then anything else. Oops.11
-
Am I the only one who hates these 9-5 work times?
Right now it's almost midnight and I'm awake and my mind is productive, but I know tomorrow at work I'll be tired until lunch atleast and only from like 3-6 on I'll start being really productive. Wish I could work from like 5pm to 1am..12 -

Summary of my week
Day:
Fix merge conflicts at work
Night:
Fix merge conflicts in Skyrim mod scripts2 -
We have a 15-machine cluster that went down last night because one machine in the cluster went down. Apparently having a cluster for redundancy is just a nice idea and doesnt actually work in practice.
Also I shouldnt have to go to a vendor's forums to find out the bug that is causing my cluster to go down is fixed in a future version. It should be in the goddamn patch notes!!! -
Woke up from my sleep last night because the solution for a long running bug hit me. In a hurry I ran to my work-desk not too far from the bed and flipped open my laptop so hard I broke the screen.
I’ve sent the laptop for repair but my night was so long I didn’t want to get off because previously I only had one problem but then it doubled.2 -
That awkward moment when you stay late night in the office to catch up some delayed work and suddenly remember that story you heard during lunch about the ghost that appears in the office at night8
-
What is it with these companies and mandatory updates?
Microsoft with windows 10. Sorry your doing work? Nah, we've decided your going to update now! Sorry, we based our default update time on people not working late at night.
Philips hue. Wanna turn on your lights? Sorry, mandatory firmware update. You'd better install that before being able to see.
YouTube app on ps4. No sorry, can't open this, mandatory 80mb update.
FUCK SAKE PEOPLE.8 -
Thank God the week 233 rants are over - was getting sick of elitist internet losers.
The worst security bug I saw was when I first started work as a dev in Angular almost year ago. Despite the code being a couple of years old, the links to the data on firebase had 0 rules concerning user access, all data basically publicly available, the API keys were uploaded on GitHub, and even the auth guard didn't work. A proper mess that still gives me the night spooks to this day.3 -
When it's Friday night, you didn't bring you work laptop home with you, have no way of working from home without it, and remember something that might be wrong with your code.
I'm sure I'll forget about it tomorrow.2 -
Life of a developer. Wake up in the middle of the night on a weekend and have the solution for the problem at work.3

Monday, at the weekend I will start working on that thing I wanted.
...
Friday, tomorrow I can finally start working on that thing I wanted

Sunday night, damn, I wanted to work on that thing I wanted2 -
Helped my friend setup a modded minecraft server, spent all night playing and forgot to sleep, gotta log into work in 3.5 hours... oops lol2
-
Just started as a remote dev and I found that it's IMPOSSIBLE to work from home.
Get annoyed from something not compiling/errors? Go play some video games two feet away. Nothing going your way? Go lie down on the bed behind you.
But for some reason I can work from home way better at night.
Any other tips for working remotely?9 -
Has anyone had to hack into a server so they can set up their work,
Literally have a client asking me to do this change to their site and they are asking the dev who is controlling it but they just not letting me access ..
Long night ahead 🙄 got to add a ftp account ... All I need to do is add small lines of code for tracking, but this guy doesn't want to let me on it cause I'm slowly taking over his work... if he did his job right it's not like it would be happening anyway6 -
Why the fuck people advertise themselves as 24h service if they work 9..17?! I need a fucking plumber to change leaky toilet seat. Called over ten different guys, and, guess what? They don't give a shit!
Meanwhile I used to have clients calling in the middle of the night or early in the morning. And I DON'T work 24/7.
What's fucking wrong with this world where you have to study long years and buy pricey tools and be available to the client all the time, and on the other hand you don't have to even start a college, just have right tools and materials, and you have better job? I could become a plumber. At least my work wouldn't be outsourced to India...
Sorry you Indian guys ;-)9 -
My biggest distraction: Working at home. I have a student job at my university and work at home. Just visit my boss every other week to show him the results.
So I always thought it's amazing to work at home. No need to travel to the work space, I can arrange my time as I like, noone's constantly watching what I'm doing.
Sounds great, right? Yeah it is, but is it productive? Lol no.
I'm getting distracted by everything. New mail about some kickstarter stuff, one hour wasted. "Can you help me with that computer problem?" Yeah sure. "Wanna play some League of Legends with us?" Sure, but just one round, I need to work. Ten rounds later I wrote like three lines of code.
I could ignore all that stuff, but I'm at home and can do whatever I want, right?
Results in me working through all night, because then there's noone to distract me.2 -
For every developer, who lives a nocturnal life.. the toughest job is baby sitting for a week..
At least for me.. Already missing the 3 AM idea cracks and coding..
Waking up at 6am is not my cup of tea and getting the kids ready for school.. I would rather prefer to work all night...
Another 3 days to go...10 -
Don't panic and break up your big problem into smaller problems and solve them in a logical cadence.
Also, when you go home at night...turn off man. If you take your work home with you, you will go mental.1 -
Until last night I didn't realize Christmas is next week. This new realisation have had an dramatic effect on my work ethic. Time spent watching cat videos have plummeted.

50 hours straight.
Attended a hackathon for 3 days and sadly when it was time to sleep the "sleeping arrangements" were already taken by some other teammates and there was no place for the rest. So me and 4 other teammates decided to work through the night and day to finish everything so we can go home and sleep.
Finish 3rd in the hackathon tho, not bad for a first time.😁3 -
Just remembered that I forgot to push all day's work..
Now my scumbag brain is going to keep me awake all night thinking about all the shit that can go wrong...

Goodbye, a night of work!
I just typed "rm * .sh.*" instead of "rm *.sh.*" for deleting the logs from a bunch of qsubs. Yes, I removed the logs... as well as the rest of the files in the folder.
Now, probably because of the lack of sleep, I'm laughing to keep myself from crying.
No more code for today!7 -
I stayed at work till 8:30 last night writing tests. It was awesome!
Got home and told Mom: "sorry, got carried away".3 -
Messed up my sleep cycle again! Its 5:30 pm here and I have just woken up. Now the night is going to pass by coding runs, gaming streaks and perhaps a movie. In the morning again I have to be at the office to work. Will have to stay awake for 30 hours or so. FML!3
-
...He hired a shit dev who did the same work in 3 times less than what I asked for.
He's now back crying to fix his Fuck up.
You ask how I know he is shit. He SSH-ed into the server. Worked directly off the production files. Worst of all, he installed phpmyadmin, changed the db structure without even writing a fucking migration !!!
How the hell am I supposed to know what he changed!! It's gonna be a long night 😥5 -
Is it not strange that I'm most productive at night? I just can't work at daytime ... tried it many times ...4
-
Yesterday night, pushed code that work normally to prod server, website down, internal server error, too many connection to MySQL server, tried to fix it for 4 hours, nothing to do, removed the new code, still the same problem, in my head, I told myself that I'm not good at programming (not the first time), send an email to the host, they tell me the problem is from them and they fixed it. And now I know I'm not bad enough.2

Just had my first insomnia night, I simply could not fall asleep! While laying in my bed I had great ideas for work and for my home projects, like new features, infrastructure and even implementation details. Now that I'm up I can't remember most of it, of course!
Worst part about it is that when I got to bed I had about 5hrs to get some quality sleep, now I got non it feels like. Fuck.
Can anyone relate? :/7 -
@Baguette is apparently a professional sleeper, please teach me, I need an expert in this domain, I can't stand going to work with barely 4~ hours of sleep / night5
-
Does anyone else here hate people who use numpy panda and tensorflow and call themselves data scientists ??
Cuz I hate 'em. There are so many researchers who work day and night to figure out the math and algos which go into these libraries. These researchers are real data scientists.
If computerss sciemce would have been a religion, then just using these stupid libraries and claiming you are a data scientist would be blasphemy.7 -
A burden has been lifted off of me. The burden of social media. I hate it with every ounce of my soul(except twitter and devRant). The amount of time wasted it is unreal. Deleted my instagram last night and my snapchat this morning. It feels so good!!!!! Sure my classmates think I'm crazy but it is worth it. No negativity more time to focus, work and game. I think it is a huge win.6

A senior developer would ask me to drink in the bar where we talk about dev and non dev related stuff, almost every night after work10
-
The feeling when you leave work frustrated because of that unfixed bug and in the night you lay on the bed, trying to fix the bug writing code in your mind and getting more frustrated because your imaginary code doesn't fix the bug.1

Had a burnout at my last job when I worked myself to the bone to cope with stress, a failing relationship and not having much money. Also, made a crap ton of mistakes at work because of it.
Didn't sleep much, started skipping lunch to save what little money I had so I could commute (friends treated me every now and then, still grateful), dropped out of college because couldn't juggle work, studies and got chewed out by my family every day and just worked non-stop.
The end result was that I collapsed when I got home one night and woke up at 3 am with a severe migraine; stayed awake till sunrise then left for work again (got scolded really badly by everyone, felt loved). Fun times.1 -
You know you're obsessed with your current codebase when you work on it until 8am the previous night, and are then annoyed at the inconvenience of not being able to work on it because you have to attend a party hosted by another dev, which you know will actually be fun2
-
Last night I dreamed that I figured out a new complicated computer language... it was the best feeling until I woke up and realized it didn’t exist and all that work was for nothing!! Why can’t dreams be more productive?!4
-
I always confuse sunday night as a weekend night and go to work on mondays with severe sleep depravation
-
Just spent an entire night eaning up my codebase...
I optimized some of the functions got rid of unnecessary global variables and changed up the whole file hirearchy so it would be easier to read. After spending all night doing this I went to run the program and for once it seemed everything worked right the first time! However a portion of my application that is supposed to happen at a certain date and time never would run. After spending all night comparing each and every line for what I changed versus my last commit I couldn't find the fallacy in my logic. Everything should still work like it did before. After spending more time looking for bugs I finally realized I didn't break anything when I switched over to this new structure it was the old code that was broken. I went through the old code and after some debugging eventually found the culprit an extra continue statement that prevented my loop from fully executing. Lesson learned sometimes the biggest bugs can spawn from one line of code.4 -
Saturday night coding to make a deadline for a Wordpress website that needs to launch on monday...
I hate Wordpress!!!! Did I ever mention it?
Ok, now back to work!7 -
Not particularly dev related but I do need to rant.
Parents are here to visit, it's lovely to see them. Unfortunately I have a small ass 1 bed flat because rent and house prices are stupid high where I work. I'm sleeping in the living room on an air bed, the fridge/freezer is noisy and about 3 foot from my head so I've been turning it off over night. It didn't get plugged in this morning so shit's getting thrown out. I sleep maybe 5 hours, wake up at 1 too hot, 4 too cold then mother comes in at 6 with the dogs. 3rd night of this. I've taken holiday even though I don't have much to spare because there's no way in fuck I can work feeling like this, I'm a dev and need to be able to think and do intelligent things ffs.
It's nice to see family but it's nice to have my own space too. -
I have a neighbor with a really annoying car alarm.
It went off at 2am.
It’s not the first time it’s gone off in the middle of the night (though sometimes it goes off in the middle of my work meetings; variety really is the spice of life).
I can’t go back to sleep once I’ve woken up (doing so, like, always results in getting a migraine).
I am so tired.10 -
When you work your ass out for days and night together for a feature. Rip your brains apart for that slimy thing to work.
And the client says it was not needed.
FUUUUCKKK2 -
Before devRant:
* Sit back and enjoy the night watching series/movies*
* Chills in the weekends*
- It's nice to code at work
😊
After devRant:
*anxiety building up*
*start sweating*
Should I code all time?
(0_0')
When I get home I'll start a project7 -
Company: people are not taking holidays, let's have after work party midweek so they have to take a day off.
Employees: (next day after late night party) I'm calling in sick2 -
You get to work, things have broken down in the night, you have no access to production or even test environment and you have to guess why. You do the same job as somebody in other countries for less pay while everyone else has this laid back approach where the time they actually spend working is negligible. Until the sheer amount of entropy in your organization wears you down and you just become part of the problem.
-
That hangover you get after working on a personal project all night long, having less than an hour of sleep before your actual work day begins..1
-
Don't you just love it when you come in late and the commit you made last night and were certain was going to work, doesn't work and everybody is pissed because of it? And all because your shell won't run since the line ending of your sh file was somehow Windows instead of UNIX.
Fucking love it ^_^1 -
So, my wife got this new PR job where she sometimes gets called in the middle of the fucking night because some jackoff in Singapore said or did some shit.
Since "husbands that work deep into the night get cheated on by their wives", and I believe in equal gender rights, I thought it would be a good opportunity to watch the new episode of the series we watch together. By my fucking self.
Is that how it feels to cheat on someone? -
Had to make a change in an ugly codebase. For this I had to change a config value which was duplicated three times in the code base. So I wanted to refactor the code so that the config was in one place.
I worked on this for two days and it was starting to look good. On the third day when I started to work on this I realized that I couldn't start the server anymore. Looking through version control I figure out that my co-worker had stayed till 3am last night to work on the change I was supposed to make.
I had to spend all morning undoing his commits. Once I was done refactoring the actual change took me ten minutes.
Why the fuck would you stay until the middle of the night to work on someone else's task?!
Could have just asked how it was coming along if I wasn't working fast enough for him.2 -
3 straight days with less than 3 hours of sleep per night. If something or someone wakes me in the first fifteen minutes as I'm drifting off, that's it, my wired for however long.
Previous two nights I just barely slept at all. Last night got awakened twice as I was drifting off. To start with, its ettypre for me to be able to fall asleep at all a second time.
Last three nights I'm not actually sure I even slept. I blinked and it was morning and I woke up exhausted. Only thing I can remember is racing thoughts, as I fell asleep, and the very same exact thoughts *as* I woke up, as if my brain had been thinking the same thing on a loop for a few hours, while I was catatonic and unable to fully shut down, stuck in 'on' mode all night and not realizing it.
Not a single fucking job I work honor's their god damn promises, let alone my repeated requests for night shift.
Was so exhausted yesterday my chest hurt.
How am I supposed to drive to work on less than 9 hours asleep spread out across three days? Cant catch a fuckong break lately, and when I do it's like the universe fucking sabotages me with shit like this.6 -
Programmer like working at night (at least I like working at night). Would it be cool if there is a company which the work hour will start at midnight and end at early morning?
Customer facing side of the company can work the regular hour while developer will work at night.10 -
Anyone else have this, seems like you can do double the work in late night pm/am than in day am/pm..
And I'm starting my internship next week.. gotta be a morning person now :/7 -
I still hang out with my friends that I have known since we're in elementary school. The whole gang just had dinner and beer at a pub last night. We usually hang out on Friday or Saturday night. Then sometimes on weekends at someone's place cooking meals, playing games etc.
I also hang out with my gf at least one day a week. The activities are *censored*.
Apart from that, the rest of my life is work life.
I won't say my life is very good but I can't say it's terrible. 🤔1 -
Great things aren't developed in one day and night with excessive caffeine and hard work. They are developed in many days and many nights with excessive caffeine and hard work.
-
Ugggg!
I am about fed up with Windows.
I leave app/programs open at night because I have a bad memory, and they were important to what I was doing.
I wake up: Windows Login Screen. Apparentally windows decided to restart my computer during the night.
Ohh what joy.~
Now I have to rememeber what the fuck I had open - and it was mostly work related.
I would have left for Linux ages ago, but I'm a gamer.. And most of my games are for windows.. Some are even Windows Store Apps..
Windows.. Why don't you give a shit about us..
And before you ask..
I have Auto Updates Disabled (Not that that really fucking matters with windows..)
I have all sleep and power saver settings disabled.13 -
Multiple all-nighters (all day every day):
1) Working, studying and developing an Android game as pet project. Last few weeks before release (yup, I've set a deadline for a pet project) my day consisted of uni, work, more work and 4-5h sleep.
2) Having worked on my thesis (Development of a CPU/SoC + Firmware + Linux kernel) and actual paid work. In parallel. Because, you know, I need to eat and pay rent and shit while I'm writing the thesis. And debts at that moment were not an option (still made some). All-day all-night all-week. After submitting the thesis I went to the doc and enjoyed 2 weeks of doing nothing.
3) Sometimes on my main open-source project after regular work hours. If I have the motivation and ideas that I want to check out or prove it gets late/early too fast. -
I hate when I it's night, I have ideas/want to work on my projects or study, but I'm way too tired..
I can't work, because I will only develop new bugs
I can't study, because I can't receive information anymore
And I can't fucking sleep either because I am constantly thinking about how much I WANT to do.
Absolutely hate it...4 -
Wake up in the morning and my girlfriend told me I have been mumbling about bugs all night. God, I need new projects, so tired of maintenance work
-
It's 6am and I've already started my work day because I am my most productive first thing in the morning. When they debate against WFH and flexibility, they don't talk about how different people feel more awake and present at different times. I know devs who work better in the dead of the night. 9 to 5 in office just ain't it.7
-
Fucking corporate bullshit, I was coding (mostly creating bugs and pulling my hair off) all night on my free time (I'm on night shifts I keep the schedule when I have my days off) and at the moment I was making huge progress on my project, I gotta go to sleep to go back to work 4h later to follow a fucking 2h training on team efficiency and cohesion, in other words, how to waste 2h in a useless meeting and not getting it back + interrupting the only night I was in the zone, I'm so tired of this....2
-
So, depression, yeah?
Two good days of work in a row, and on the third, I sleep late and think during sleep and throughout the night, wake up tired and feel shitty and feel a crash-burn in my feelings. (or whatever you want to call it. Burnt out? Tired? Exhausted? Lonely?) So now I have the rest the optimizing sql bullshit project and a paper to finish, plus I need to work more on the thesis. And ofc, work itself.
Everything feels so gloomy.
I know it gets better, but feeling shit doesn't help either.
Anyways, I'm fishing for attention this time so gimme your good vibes! 🙂4 -
"You should accept your employees for who they are and optimize for their abilities. I am a night owl, always have been, always will be. I am done trying to work in the mornings—it is a waste of time as I am not effective and make more mistakes when I try to work at this time."
https://qz.com/891537/...2 -
Just had a work review last day. They told I am meeting their expectations . Okay ,Nice..
Then at night , talking to a friend working in same company ,heard her review significantly exceeding expections and all she gets to do simple bug fixes or smaller user stories. No complaints for her.. But for my team, A little more appreciation would have been better..
When these corporate jobs will realise that sometimes an appreciation can make you work better?1 -
For me its a good night sleep and have a strict rule not to work from home/not-working-location. It will make the window of working time more focused.2
-
No table and monitor, and having to work ALL THE TIME. Our team structure changed recently, and a coworker with 2 years of experience is my lead. He wakes up at 11-12 in the morning, starts working by around 2, takes enough breaks and sleeps at like 5 AM. He assigns tasks late in the evening and night. Expects people to finish it staying up late, because if he can, why can't we. Most of the time, it's like, hey, just push a little and finish it tonight, we have other things to do tomorrow.
And team mates who can NOT work without help from other people and text and call you every hour.4 -
I got a feedback saying that I am good at solving problems which are obvious and have obvious steps. But I have to improve a lot where problems are complex or solution is not known.
People, I have 3.5 years of experience in industry and still I am a junior. I am continuously thinking about it. I was a smart person till my school, I never had to work hard I think it is impacting me till now. I sleep so late and work only in the night, get up so late and feel bad about it :( Everyone is doing so good as compared to me.20 -
I distinctly remember all of us discussing how we prefer to work at night. I worked through the night and now about to work through the day. Now it's all a blur and I feel numb inside. This voice keeps saying "you are just a machine" and then I wake up with qwerty stamped on my forehead and the music bringing me back. Time to work!2
-
Time for late night coding, debugging, thinking..been busy since I woke up, work, college, exams, work..work while waiting for an exam..
Coffee - check
Cigarettes - check
Music to keep me motivated - check
Laptop still not lagging - check
Will probably want to sleep in couple of hours - check -
And so it happened.
My company installed app-operated locks in the office.
Today the internet went down during the night and nobody could get in to even get their laptops to work from home :))))
Brilliant move and there's certainly not been anybody who could have predicted that.3 -
Blizzard coming this weekend. I get to spend the night at work because our disaster recovery plan isn’t in full swing (Yes it’s paid, but I am going to lose my mind). Awesome. Suck my ass, winter.2
-
I like to stay home and code day and night on my side projects. I don't want to go to work. I wish I had the money to fulfill my passion.
Fuck money, fuck bills3 -
When you work for a week day and night to compete a feature, because top management said it's the highest priority. Then when you're about to send it off to test, they tell you it is no longer required.2
-
Funny how I can go all day not being able to think of anyone that bad, but then when I remember THAT ONE GUY from a group project in college, I can't stop ranting.
highlights:
- He micromanaged our group without adding any value on his end
- Scheduled 2 hour meetings on Friday evenings to show us his work so we could "learn and take notes"
- when the group finally reached out and asked if we could work differently, he completely shut down. like stopped replying and working completely.
- last night we were putting together our presentation, he bailed because he had an 8-HOUR date with someone he just met....nevermind that we had our calendar set a month prior
- prior to that date, he submitted code to our final release that was riddled with bugs, so I stayed up all night debugging and rewriting his parts
</rant>2 -
Working on a Xamarin (.Net) project in the morning, in the evening I work on React Native project. And a little time at night with Java side project, also sometimes I do some support to a native Android App.
God, this is like a brain gym ! -
I don't know how many hours in a row it was, but one month I put down about 340 hours of work.
My boss had taken upon this massive project with a deadline at the end of the month. I basically lived at the office (I actually spent the night there more than once), meanwhile he was out sailing.1 -
Pseudo-flexible working hours suck. I get the "choice" to start work between 7:30-9:30 AM. I'm a night owl so waking up at 6AM is not an option. Why can't they just allow to start at 10AM and finish at 6:30PM? Between 7:30 & 9:30 is peak rush hour and I'm bound to lose 1h30 in traffic for 30km (normally it would take half an hour) and start my workday pissed off.6
-
CEO: so how long would this take?
Me: Me plus another engineer... probably 4 weeks.
CEO: What if I give you XYZ(principal engineers from infra team)
Me: Wait... no i need a full stack engineer.
CEO: okay fine. I'll give you 3 engineers, can you get it done in 2 weeks instead?
Me: No... some of the work cannot be parallelized.
CEO: okay.
....a week later
CEO: I thought about it, what if you work days and night, and also the weekend, can you get it done?
Me: nnlnn1 -
When it’s 3am and you are working on an exception for more than 2 hours and have optimized your whole code just to be sure and remember you are writing swift not java: some ints have low max value like UInt8.3
-
So I need your advice guys. Our team is in crisis mode right now because of a vendor's attempt to extort money out of us. So for the next 6 months I am going to be taken off development and made to do sysadmin work...which I hate.
There is another team at work that was trying to woo me over to their team, working in security...which I love.
So would it be a dick move to leave my struggling team that is trying to use a hammer as a screwdriver and do what makes me happy? Or should I be a good person and do work that makes me miserable and go home and drink every night instead?4 -
Get well soon for @aureliagbrl. i hope i quit my job a bit later (since i always go home with her) and last night she got an accident while on her way home after overtime work.
sorry dear 😥6 -
I'm at work coding at 21:00 on a Friday cause money, no life ya know, but then it hit me. I could be at home on coding on a Friday night and still I would have no money and no life but o would have ALCOHOL! Ballmer peak here I come!
Ps I haven't drank in 6 days and I don't drink to excess (often). I just find it enjoyable2 -
Anyone else find they work better between the hours of say 10am - 2am rather than the "normal office hours" of 9am - 5pm?
The problem is if I start later then the people who I work with are so absorbed in their work that I don't receive a reply to my email.1 -
who tf invented shift work? .-.
my lazy ass is too tired to get up at 3am to work a mind-numbing job...11 -
I am drunk right now. Just wanted to let you guys know that I love you and that I am really proud to be part of such a nice community. I know that we Devs sometimes have a hard time due to our profession, but I am happy that we are still able to stay strong together.
And now good night. Have to work in 6 hours.5 -
Finally, I have a night free of work today. It is the first time this month. I'm so happy to have some time to read and rest.
Life can be insane.
Enjoy the little things in life, because one day you will look back and realize they were the big things.1 -
So my gf told me about a job offerin she heard. They're looking for Python dev for a weather website.
Cool sound good.
Thank god I went for a drink with friends that night cause when I mentioned the job...well.
Apparently this dick pays about a 100$ LESS than a MINIMUM wage (not to mention the hostile work environment).
Honestly idk how they even stay afloat. I mean you can make almost DOUBLE working at McDonald's. -
Boy oh boy.. Reminds me of good ol college days. I was in my final sem when Amazon came to our university for campus hiring. I was very confident that I will get selected. Funnily enough I went till the final round and I had a feeling that it went well if not excellent. It was a Friday night and we had to wait two excruciating days for the final shortlisted result to come. On the evening of Monday my friend T called me and told me my name is not on the list. I was heartbroken. I asked him who all got selected and he said our friend A did. A was, and still is a good friend of ours and I was happy for him. That night we sat down for drinks and as the night progressed I anguished over my selection. I still remember solving a binary tree problem holding a glass of whiskey in my one hand. The next morning I woke up at 6, detoxed myself with fruit juices and sat in front of my laptop feeling full rage from last night. I sat till lunch and hacked a chrome extension in one sitting. Mind you I had no existing knowledge of extensions at that point of time. I sometimes look how my life has turned since that time and now I am one of the devs in a team which work on a product that itself is a browser extension. :)

There's this tech-wannabe guy who sends me random electronic related questions at the middle of the night. I don't have a gosh darn clue about what's he even up to.
He takes a muzzy photo of his computer screen, not a proper screenshot, and asks for "Will this schematic work if I leave this and that part off of it? Cuz I don't currently have those at my shelf."
Same for sharing a link, take a photo of it.3 -
I think the worst time was when I worked on a work project through the night. It was at my previous employer, I was forced to work on legacy php projects I knew nothing about. Nobody could help me and I was always doing days over tickets which were just a pain in the ass in an old magic framework and a custom build cms :c.
I couldn't motivate myself for days and eventually when the deadline came I worked through the night and committed in the morning, then I jumped into bed. I realized that this was a big sign that I really had to quit, and switched companies several months later.2 -
Start my days at 6am local to be able to have an entire days’ worth of access to my team because they’re all East Coast and I’m Pacific. And then work until it’s 5pm local regularly because I lose track of time. And then I can’t just turn it off at night, so then I’m restless thinking about the things I could be doing to make the project better.
How the hell do the rest of you stop thinking about work after work?question pain is annoying birthday tomorrow remote work is terrible for a workaholic horribly sunburned10 -
It's hotter than Satan's latrines after vindaloo night here in the UK.
Today I look like a hobbit wandered through California and I'm seriously considering proposing a mid afternoon siesta.
Naps, blankets and pillows would make work so much easier to cope with.3 -
Mornings. Not just the run of the mill “I’m not a morning person” but I legitimately would be more productive if I could work night shift. It’s easier to think at night, and easier to sleep during the day. Not just a night owl, but it’s hard to breathe laying down at night sometimes. Sometimes I randomly can’t sleep. I’ve never had this trouble during the day during the occasions I get to sleep for long periods during the day. The morning is prime sleeping time IMO. Not wanting to wake up is one reason, but the changing weather helps and it just feels right.
I also don’t feel awake til the afternoon usually. Even if I get enough sleep and coffee. Code churns slow in the a.m.
I dream of night time being work time with long, restful naps durning the day. I feel more creative at night, and it’s easier to focus. There’s less thought of “oh it’s a nice day I should do x”
Just sucks that it’s not largely accepted and there’s not enough other night hawks to hang out with on my off days. And my work won’t let me do such a schedule. Everyone is an insufferable morning person.
Early to bed early to rise is a load of shit. We should be allowed to sleep at times it makes us happy.3 -
Woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I have a ton of solutions to work problems but don't want to get out of bed because I have work tomorrow...
-
Why the hell am I so talkative!!!!!
I think it's better I work alone so that I be less of an annoy for others...
Side-effects of me working at day time..
Missing working at night time all alone..3 -
Got my RC522 RFID reader for a school project last night, got it to work, tried to plug it into my breadboard this morning and shorted it... Double checked on 2 different arduinos and 1RPi 3 B didn't work on either one of them.
Fuck my life.1 -
What ever i do, i can 't get to bed early. Damn bugs keep me awake at night. Any tips on how to let go of work in the evening?5
-
left work last night at 4am, leaving the laptop at the office disgustes. now i feel insecure for leaving it there on a sunday2

I Feel very happy being in quarantine. Going to college and wasting 6-7 hours of time in learning that stupid old stuff and working all night totally sucks. Now, i have my whole 24 hours to work. Stupid outdated indian colleges.4

Late night kaggle session, and I'm enjoying how cute and clean this dataset is!
I'm jealous if data scientists always get to work with such neat sets! Dude! I got .95 acc without any effort! This is so... Weird. 🤔4 -
In Morning: Let's remove this bug.
*after some time*
"Ok!!! I would solve this at night time."
Night: leave it! Let's work on another project. -
Code on own side project the whole night without sleeping til 6-7am right before going to work because today is half day only in office.
I thought I could manage it but haha totally wrong, First 2 hours were good, during last 2 hours I was trying my best not to fell asleep.
Worst decision ever.2 -
Coworker (junior engineer): "He's a principal engineer, and damn good at his job because he works all night long. You're still lead engineer because you don't work late at night."
Flak I get for *not* being able to stay up after 10:30pm. 😥7 -
PLEASE RETROFIT THIS ISSUE TO THE BRANCH NOW! THIS NEEDS TO BE IN TODAY! NO EXCUSES!
Uhh, that would be ok if it weren't 40 commits over several JIRA issues in over 12 different modules... or if you had given me more than half a day to accomplish this task. But no. So here were are, at work at 7:30 pm spinning builds. Missing date night with my S.O.
And now the build is red.
Kill me.2 -
Insomnia = developer problems. My body clock is broken because of graveyard shifts. I don't like night shift. It is killing my body. Weekends no work should be night shift too.1

Can't understand, programming in work (office) makes me so tired, bored, I just can't concentrate, programming at home is so fun, I can do it all night2

My job in company to developed e-commerce website as a full stack developer.
History of that project.
Company paid 300,000 INR to the local web development firm for developing previous website and they developed website without bootstrap/SSL/Even save information of high profile client in plain text.
I am not angry on that web firm ,I am laughing on my company because such client never trust on independent developers who work hard ,code day and night to complete freelancing projects.
I hope my work will make differnce in their selling. -
Aight, so today hasnt been a good day so far, yesterday I stayed up late working on a side projext im getting paid for coz I had to deploy today, i didnt finish because I spent hours trying to get the crappy html with some awful jquery libraries to work with angular, seriously this guy uses the bullet character instead of <ul>, after my cellphone fell during the night and I didnt hear the alarm so I arrived 1 1/2 hrs late to work, now that Im here I cant work because my pc says
The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failedrant screw windows bad bosses tags (comma separated) useless tag dumb side projects pichardo for president another tag3 -
Well, apparently, I have windows 11 now.
I was in Windows Insider program, but I had selected the option to opt-out at next update (maybe 4 months ago).
Either that didn't work correctly or Windows 11 was technically the next update because last night I did a little update (it really only took like half an hour, which isn't unheard of for some Windows updates) and when I turned on the PC today, I have Windows 11 Pro
Okay!...5 -
Didn't go to work today because of commuting issues.
It's fucking night and I'm receiving notification of boss sending me photo on messenger. back to back.
I haven't opened the app yet and I'm legit scared if it has anything to do with me not coming to work.
Or even worse nudez.

Sometimes code behaves weird !!.
Spent all night trying to get something to work but now it works weirdly and I honestly don't know what to do anymore as it's not the type of thing you would be able to explain on tack overflow.
Time to sleep 5:51 AM1 -
How do you force yourself to work at night?
No matter how much I try my body is stronger than my brain. I can't keep my eyes focused after 00:00 and I have to sleep. I know people who stay up and keep developing in all-nighter.
How do you this?12 -
When it's early into the night
When the temperature is just right
When I'm surrounded by silence
And no distraction makes me defiance
When I'm feeling cozy and ready to read papers and program for my thesis
But I ruined the perfect night work genesis
BECAUSE I PROMISED TO GO TO MADAFUCKIN DINNER WITH FRIENDS
DAMNIT! -
My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8 -
Leaving work with a task only partly completed just guarantees my mind is going to obsess about it all night and my dreams will be plagued with lines of code.1
-
So the thick shit that features in a previous rant of mine (https://devrant.io/rants/782171/...) just decided to pull all my wet clothes out the washer and leave them on the floor all night. Next time he goes out I'm sticking a hose through his window, fucking moron now I have no clothes for work tomorrow... Bastard

The best thing with being a developer is those days when you just bog down and work until late at night doing cool and awesome stuffs!1 -
We had late night work... So our seniors thought of going out for drinks and asked us to join!!
We beeing the interns, bill was all on them ;)
Had fun...2 -
Not sure it's so much about my vacation, but my boss' one. I look forward to uninterrupted days in the office where I can work without much small talk or having to explain my logic in great detail to a non-technical boss. So, when I heard he was away for a week, I thought, great, I'll have some time to focus...
Whoah there, not so fast. Turn up at work on Monday morning to find my boss online on Slack waiting to chat with me. He's on the other side of the world. It's the middle of the night for him. And he says I'm not allowed to work remotely... -
I think work is finally getting to me, I had crazy dreams last night full of stack traces. Woke in a cold sweat...
-
Why are the requirements changed at the end of the day and make the developers work all night. I am not your goat.2
-
Stayed up until 2am launching a website for a client. Now I’m up too early in the morning and can’t sleep anymore. I feel like shit. I’m too old for late night work.3
-
Got half my college calling me "Pennywise" cause I work at the "IT" department. Thanks Saturday Night Live!
-
*le me being frustrated af trying to compile asm.
.section won't work for fasm. And some other things won't work for Nasm.
Now I got the .obj aka .o from the .asm. But ldrdf.exe from the nasm compiler isn't working properly. And I can't find a troubleshoot online. Seems like this will be a sleepless night...2 -
Wow I'm first!! Uhm... 8... I forgot to take lunch break cuz I was really busy or the code was really interesting...
If within 24 hrs... Maybe 12... I had to login at night a few times to finish urgent work (bug fixes) -
Oh my God. It's my last night in Italy and I can't wait for it to end - I'm sleeping in Naples.
I only had to walk 80m from my car to my bnb, but I was so afraid for my dear life I think I have some poopoo in my pantalones.
If I don't survive this night, these of you who know where my backups are, please, continue and finish my work.
What a horrible way to end a vacation.5 -
I feel retarded...
After getting a new hard drive late at night bcoz my old one went kaboom, I put it in the case, wired it up but it wouldn't work, I tried connecting it to different SATA ports with different cables etc.. This went for 20 minutes and then I realized that the drive wouldn't even start spinning, then I discovered I hadn't connected it to the PSU. Fuck my life and fuck my retardeness. -

Last night I found two Athlon XP processors in my house. They're a 2400 and a 2700, but I don't know if they work because I don't have other parts to test them.
Nothing too interesting, I just thought it was kinda cool7 -
To the newbies out there, those who just study and work hard, do you ever feel like you can’t do it? Like what the fuck is the point. You work your shit job and get home and code but kinda just look at your code editor for hours without typing anything? There are times I feel like that. I stay up all night and go to work at a shit job where were accused of stealing shit and it’s like, dude shut the fuck up, but when you get home, you know you’re gonna be a Developer one day, but you just don’t know how you’re gonna get there. Keep on pushing. It’ll come and you can leave you’re shit job. I promise that.rant coding javascript java code keep learning fuck webdev work ranting engineering web development fuckem

Deadline today. Kinda fallen behind so got permission to log in after normal work hours.
So after some errands and getting distracted by the zomboid game with my brother and some friends I log back in a little after midnight
Why is coding after at night so calming and productive. Just me, Spotify, and the code. I feel I got more done in a few hours after midnight than most 8 hour workdays6 -
"Let me get an early night and wake up early for a change"
Wakes up 12 hours later, 10 minutes before work starts 😑 -
Hey everyone.
do you also have those MLM and ebiz friends who are constantly nagging you to join one of them?Well, I had some so, I researched and wrote my first medium article on it .
In a nutshell: better utilize your time by attending college or doing a free course on coursera than joining these 'work from home ' and 'referral marketing' crap.
https://medium.com/@anshsachdevapro...
do comment and share.
sorry for this promotion-like message am really tired after writing this last full night. just one thing tho, MULTI LEVEL MARKETTING GUYS ARE ASS HOLES, TURNING PEOPLE INTO BLOODY REFERRAL CODES. its just sad when your 'friend' texts you in the middle of the night and reminds you how big of a failure you are by watching infinity war and not joining their fucking MLM. -
Nothing beats configuring an amp simulator for nearly three and a half hours and getting it to work only to have it not work later that night because JACK decided to not detect a $40 cable you bought anymore
-
How is it that every laptop my mom uses always seems to have Windows Defender AND MalwareBytes uninstalled? The thought of her work laptop always needing to be connected to a super public airport network while she has no AV bothers me to say the least, especially when that laptop then connects to our home network every night. Looks like I'm gonna use Sophos and guard that laptop like everything else on our network depends on it...5

Gotta love the client forced deployments, making the team work all weekend. Having the push to live at 9pm at night and then with 10 minutes left cancelling the whole thing. With a lovely "good job but we are not ready yet"
-
Stupid manager/boss
my good idea always get rejected first so badly.
Someday ,i proposed a good idea. after meeting with client he said "yeah we actually working on that by using this and this idea" like he's the one who found it, then he said do that idea of yours.
Then someday, i do split the repository to make things clean in approval of my other boss which is more weird. Then after split it up i got bashed from him infront of other team.
But after critical phase that make me night work. He says "we need to split it up to make this easier". Fuck. If we do it first. We dont need to take night work.
Come on, actually i never do something only based on my task. But i do want create better environment on the office. At least morale up your fuckin employee dont bash them everyfuckintime.
But yeah, like buzz said.
"Stupid people, i see stupid people everywhere" -
"Ventablack is the blackest object in the world"
Bitch my project manager makes me work all night and you haven't seen my Dark Circles :|1 -
Damn.....had great night last night
sophos had a partners function and we won an award as an emerging partner
So me and other guys forgot that tomorrow (today) is work day and drank a number of glasses and now in the office with a hangover1 -
When I work entire night I use my short profile keyboard not to make any noise, but in holidays my mom wakes up and tries her best to makes all kind of noises, after I give up and wake up, she goes to her room to read her book!
Dear God! Please eat me!1 -
The struggle continuous... should I work on my personal website or just PlayStation all night long?3
-
Yeah ok. I went to bed extra early yesterday but i kept waking up at night and now i am tired anyways but thats ok. i have to go to work now but thats good. yeah this is great. now when the sun is up and i have to go to work, my body feels like it could sleep 10 hours straight but hey, i think this is just what i need right now before work.
-
There was a big concert event after work last night I couldn't go.
Noone is at work but me today....
and there is a ton of empty bottles in the cantina as well as quite some mess in a meeting room.
And noone has said they were taking the day off. oh well I'm going early then.2 -
Meeting deadline after day and night of hard work, and you come to know client postponed the launch date to a month :rage:1
-
It's difficult to turn off the brain after a full day of work... you can't sleep 'cos the ideas must be purged or else they will rattle around all night... so you log on remotely just to get it down but proceed to (accidentally) work another nine hours... you finish with only enough time for two hours sleep before you'll need to get up for work again.
-
Woke up early. Drank coffee and my mindset is so ready to do some work. After 30 minutes I'm so sleepy like a literal crash down and will sleep now. Body why you do this? I hate night shifts. It destroys my body clock. I hope weekends and mall hours are night shifts as well.
Also I hate company internal system project when I am assigned to a client and the client don't know that. I can't tell it to the client and my company can't tell also because my hours are 100% committed to the client. -
Little story.
Manager give me task, Send mail through mail chimp to many groups and schedulled them differntly.
Day1 : it litterly waste my half hour.
Night 1 :create script using Selenium (utilize my 2 hours because It was new for me.)
Day 2 : I am devrant. (script is doing my task)
Manager is also happy that I am doing extra work. -
My department never has real pressure like real outside deadlines. Except for this project.
Now guess what happened during the final hours of the project:
Fuckin circleCI goes into "degraded performance" (last time it was "partial outage").
I feel like calling my friends Johnny Walker and Jack Daniels over for some late night work. :P1 -
Get to work before everyone is there to work a while without interruption.
Be the first there... to fix the worst problem of the year which appears this night. What a nightmare.
But it's done and fixed I'm happy ....
Half day is over now come to the real work. Oh wait Chef want to know what happens.
Day is over.
Best day of the Year!2 -
!Question
I see lots of rants here of bosses/clients screaming, imposing their authority, making people work during the night, weekends etc. Is it that common?
In my actual job, the few times my boss screamed to me, I was about "fuck this shit, I'll just do what he wants and go home at the right time. If they don't like it, just fire me. And laught silently when things goes wrong".
I've been afraid to get into the developer area and always be stressed out with too much work to do, people screaming and having to work on weekends.3 -
Literally can't afford to sleep less than 6 hours two nights in a row. If I do, like I did last night, my dumb tired sleepwalking ass will just turn off my two alarms and be late for work by like an hour.
How does something like this happen? I have no recollection of waking up even briefly to turn off my alarms but I know I wouldn't sleep in consciously on a work day, so whom can I even blame?3 -
For me coding is a huge part of my mindset. I could be having a conversation with a gf and be debugging an issue in my head. I could wake up in the middle of the night and start coding an idea I had just thought of. Especially if I'm working on something I'm too excited about, I will work hours, days straight and not make time for much else. So I've phased through quite a few relationships this way (especially with normies) 🤷♂️ I almost feel like I'd have to be with someone as obsessed as I am for things to work out lol
-
What do you do when your family time conflicts with your work time? What can I do to rotate my work schedule forward so I can get some fucking sleep without giving up on either work or my family?
This sucks, I get like 5 hours of sleep at night and my job wants me to be here no later than 9 for whatever reason.
Not to mention my commute is about 45-60 minutes both ways
Not to mention I'm making just enough money to cover my bases. Going to Costa Rica for a vacation is no where near my ability.. hell even driving across the state for a weekend trip would be wildly out of budget.
I've tried asking for a flexible schedule and ability to work from home as needed but its just become a circular debate.
I'm getting burned out and always feel tired, have no energy to stay motivated or give a shit4 -
Coffee hands down.
I am one those who work late at night till 3 am. Can't pull that of without coffee man! -
I'm alone most of the day: my housemate is at work this morning, family scattered around the country, recently moved to a new town.
I had a great night last night and today is fantastic too. I'm not writing a single line of code today or doing anything but running a few laps later... maybe.
I don't even feel sad in the slightest.
Happy nondenominational festive period guys! -
We use MDD!! I coined this term one night after getting frustrated and having a lot of drinks. What's that, you ask?
MAGIC DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT
It's when you're working on a not-so-recent code base and are afraid to make any changes in fear of breaking things up. You've touched some modules, and now you restrict yourself to work only on those treating all others as a blackbox. Even if something can be achieved by a small change in one of the blackboxes, you still go for multiple changes in the modules you're familiar with! Such is the horror. You start saying that those modules work by some dark magic that nobody understands! -
When it's Friday night and you are tired af after the work load of work. You start preferring your bed over partying out
-
Great news when the process I need to support through the night finishes early so you no longer need to work. Terrible news that I have zero chance of sleeping now as in preparation I didn't get out of bed until midday and am full of caffeine.
-
Commit every change, all of them... Yes the "Forgot a ; " MUST be commit... Commit in the DEV branch... Because you aren't ready for the PRODUCTION branch... And backup every night after work...
-
There is this work from home job, where they recruited me in one day, want a client project ready by next night. Asked for offer letter many times, but not recieved till now. Too many red flags? Or is it just me?8
-
Last year, I wasn't able to make something theorically simple with CSS3 animations and ReactJS. Last night, I made it work with VueJS (and CSS3 animations yeah). Feels. So. Fuckin. Good.3

Working on personal app project..got a feature idea... work all night to develop the feature, at morning I realized that feature is useless in my app ..Fuck that moment
-
Monday morning
Get to work
Open email
Ci went crazy
Slack is on fire
Some npm modules deprecated approach
Rewrite docker files
Some other npm modules disappeared.
I hate you web technologies, I hate you developers who make releases Friday night.
I hate everything.
Ffs on the weekend just build Ikea fornitures instead of fiddling with my stack!
Sigh.2 -
I'm so stressed at work this week that I finally needed to find some relief...
I revived my NLegs app... Been staring at girls all night but not sure which part is the most satisfying... The app or the girls...
But now I can't sleep....5 -
What is keeping you up at nights?
I'm not a coffee person. I can drink it and go to sleep :)
For me it's Pepsi. Fast shugar for energy, I guess. Strong green tea on 2nd place.3 -
So tomorrow i have my last January exam. Starts at 10AM. Kinda looking forward to getting it over and done with. After that i'm going to work on quit smoking. No more smoking and coding all night 😂 i guess i will always have monster to keep me going through the hours of coding i have until May6
-
Yesterday, I performed an experiment on myself.
I have heard pretty much that a cup of strong black coffee at night keeps you awake the entire night. Newbie here when it comes to staying up all night ( I mean I stay up late but never all night) so I decided to give it a go.
I'm unsure about the results though.
First off, how strong is a strong coffee? One teaspoon coffee per cup? Am I allowed to add a teaspoon of sugar?
Next, I think it kinda also have to do with me. I mean, I have heard it doesn't give me sleep so my personal bias affected it. I wanted it to be true. To be a life hack for that huge ass paper due by tomorrow.
Maybe it does work. At around 4 in the morning I was too tired with the shit I was doing so I decided to finally lay down. I recall this brief moment when I was in my bed all ready to sleep and the sleep wouldn't come. Maybe that's the coffee working. But again, it could just be normal.
Does it not work? If it does, how do I make it work? 😣9 -
Dealing with relationships when you are a night owl. I don't burn the midnight oil like in my twenties but I don't want to go to sleep at 1030pm. Midnight is typical but I feel my actions affect my missus as she can't sleep when I'm not there...that said..she has issues sleeping anyway or nodding off. Whereas I can fall asleep in front a TV that's on no problems or whenever my head hits a pillow. I sleep on the couch when I stay up so I don't disturb her. Or does everyone here have a cushy work life balance job where you only work 9 to 5 and don't need to be on the pc.
-
"Longest you worked without rest + why?"
Maybe around 7hrs or so? It may not be much, but the thing is that I had to work almost the whole night through.
I was about to show off a game at the school festival, and I had to finish multiple playable stages while not having a dedicated stage editor application; I was using Notepad as the stage builder. I had to work through the night before the event.
Ended up catching the flu after the event, but I don't regret it.1 -
Not aRant but I just got my GT86 and its a fuckin beast. Took it out last night till 5 in the morinin then headed to work at 7 in my nissan note lol, not gonna use the GT for 62 miles everyday3
-
Taking a leave for 14 days from work, just to use my vacation days, really messes with my biorhythm :D My day/night cycle shifted about 12 hours.. Programming during the night for a freelance project, sleeping 1-2 hours during the day just to rest my eyes a bit..
I'm from Belgium, but the second developer, on the project, is from San Francisco.. It's quiet nice to have someone to talk to about the development process when every one else I know is asleep.
I'm not made for a dayjob at a desk, I need to be at home, in my bed or at my own desk, choosing my own hours, just.. Working on projects with some music, some snacks,.. Much more productive that way than, instead, being forced to work from 9am to 6pm.. You can't force creativity or inspiration
.
I slept 9 hours this week, spread over 4 days... I'm not the most healthy person, I know :D1 -
It's fuckin midnight, after an exhausting day. Instead of working on a company, why don't each one of us just create a blog site, then add some ads, we share our url here and we'll gonna visit each shared url to generate traffic so we can generate revenue.
Oh if only it could work that way. These what if scenarios sometimes coming to my mind at night. Sorry for the interruption, keep scrolling.3 -
It's hard enough to survive a whole work-week on 1-3 hours of non-deep sleep per night.
Being away from home for roughly 12 hours a day; only working about 8 on the clock, and still being on standby after hours.
Now you expect me to count all those hours? I'm too tired for that, haha :p -
Same procedure as every night. I don't know why but I can't sleep at the moment. I went to bed at 9pm today because I was fucking tired and woke up at 11pm again - totally awake and refreshed but I know I will be fucked tomorrow because of not enough sleep... I am actually thinking about doing today's work now instead of in 9 hours.
-
They tried to mark him, they even tried compacting him and his children, but this old generation instance is not going down without a fight. He’s in a big heap of trouble, and he’s running out of time. You better count your references, because this summer’s stop-the-world event will have you staying at work all night: Memory Leak: Production is in your code NOW

LONG MS WORD NIGHT DETECTED
I have to work on a high level document, low level document, SAC document and a use case script for me to get QA approvals.
**CLOSES EDITOR **1 -
F*ck you Laravel, just f*ck you.
just spent the whole night trying to make the router to work, reinstalled lamp over and over again, htaccess looks good, still getting internal errors. Why can't we just work with Node?5 -
Ugh, I finally got a big project at work as the main backender but I still have a lot to learn. I fucked up the estimation for a big component and this is the fifth night im working late because I feel responsible.
Fuck this shit.4 -
i am going through a tough time and since i got cut off from my friends, nd have no desire for self time/binging/going out, i found responsibilities to be the only way of passing time.
and my outstation boss being on an office visit added to my distraction. he is busy motivating us folks to work faster , take more tasks, pick kpis etc, and i am already motivated to work as anything else is just a mental suffering for me.
so i finished a ticket in 5 hours last night, which was supposed to take this whole sprint of 14 days . win-win for both of us :) :(5 -
It should be at night (after 9/10pm; I work better at night anyway), headphones on, music blasting (heavy metal nowadays), alone, preferably no distractions, but now that I am at home for xmas holidays I have to be on the lookout for my parents calling me. When I go back to uni I can eliminate that variable from this equation and so I should be in the zone for longer. Hopefully 😅
-
I often read rants, and I can see how everyone gives for granted that we have to overwork, work until night, work on weekend, work when the boss asks us, read the email, work until you fixed that bug, and so on. I mean, I don't see anyone ranting about this, I just see that this became the background of other rants, something that's so normal and we are so accustomed that we don't even consider it a problem anymore. I was wondering, is it just me that gives value to his own free time? That would rather read a book, watch tv or stay with friends? Or at least being able to tell a friend "we'll meet for dinner" without the fear of a problem blocking you at your job. Why should I be paid less than average in my country and work more, making the benefits still less concrete? I think I have a good brain and I chose this career because I love it, but if I could born again I'd be a doctor or a teacher3
-
Then you have shit storm of work all week and friday night is for heavy drinking to feel f-ed up all weekend to reset yourself for next week...
-
I'm so tired when I got up. Didn't sleep much last night. Working on a Sunday night till 2AM because I did not work the week on the project I was given.
This is not happening for the first time, I sleep late around 3AM to do my work, as day is too noisy and distracting. Attend some meetings during the day and get lazy in the evenings. Work during nights and then the next day I'm all tired for daily stand up.
How do you people tackle this schedule? I need serious advices.5 -
In your opinion, it's ok for employer to call / message after work or anytime not within the working hour? (Like call you for some task in the middle of the night , etc ..)7
-
Started a seo project/busines and i was working day and night...can't finish it because i started working from 8 am to 7 pm in an auto service so i can feed myself and pay the bills...any advice on how to make some money online so i can work from home and continue with my project and finaly get my business going?2
-
Finally got some time on my holiday to do some side project work! Turns out it was a looong time since I started this computer.
So what I believed to be one lovely night of coding turned out to be one looong night of software updating...
I'm soon off to bed. Fingers crossed that I'll get some more time to do actual coding soon. -
Why i cannot find partners to form a team to write mvp's and products ? Everyone either look only his company job either is too not-disciplined. I try to find what i am doing wrong in that. I can provide more info about that. Why no one wants to be a free "wizard" negotiating with his own terms (e.g. i want to work at night) and everything now is fitting on companies culture etc.4
-
First and foremost, keep clients and work colleagues (especially management people) out of your personal life as much as possible.
Communicate to the rest of the team and clients (if in a client facing role) when you will and won't be available. Also communicate your concerns about any unrealistic deadlines.
Most of the times, this is bound to be ineffective. So, keep phone on silent (or flight mode) at night and during weekends. Also don't call back in case there is a missed call from anybody from work colleagues.
I deviate from this only if there is a go live or similar activity going on. -
I called a recruiter and asked to reschedule an interview because I stayed up all night working on a deadline. He begged me to go anyway but I totally bombed the interview which took place during my lunch break and ran over an hour causing more stress. By the way I didn't want to work there anyway. This is not really a recruiter rant because I should have said no to the interview in the first place.1
-
Well it was a paid internship but I was in IT/support, used to work in shifts, loved the night shifts (solo) that was when i could write some code, a fellow intern showed me a bash script he had written to automate some the reports he needed to generate, life was great those few months.
-
My coding style is influenced by the tight hours that get assigned to every task at work in order to make the projects profitable enough for what is expected by my bosses bosses boss. So just imagine back in college when you waited until the night before to start an assignment.
-
Get to work, I'm going to have a really productive day tackling problem X. What do you mean Jenkins decided to corrupt every local SVN checkout? Spent the day getting Jenkins back on its feet and trying to figure out why it hated last night. Tomorrow... I'm going to have a really productive day tackling problem X...
-
Stayed up all night to work up till 4am on a weekday to finish off some work stuff. Still, got told the next day you're exceeding deadlines smh.6

I am stuck!!
I don;t even how to write :(
I mean does anyone have shit talk about android studio ? Anyone?
I have to work with android studio or so but I am feeling very lazy to get it installed and setup. I am working with expo and I was so happy that simple React native is working!! But now for few libraries I have to installed android studio They wont work simply with expo go :(
I am thinking will it be worth to go through with these installation and setup.. :(
Thank god!! this is my own work so I can search and do my best in research avoiding installation. But I feel like if I have to work with mobile apps sooner or later I have to install proper setup, Wish there is a way I am searching for solution since morning and no luck yet :)
Will search in night too2 -
Put in 2 weeks of dev, it passes QA, guy that is presenting to customer checks it against the spec and after all of that half an hour before end of work day the day before guy is going to the client to present this he finds an error (I misinterpreted the spec)... Nope, not gonna code the changes all night so it's implemented properly for the presentation.
-
I am doing some late night developing because I feel excited about my own project after a long slog of refactoring and ground work... and my IDE is getting weird leading to long compilation times :(
Dear World. I am doing my life-chores so please let me get my shit done for once!
I was this close to fall asleep content tonight... -
So i've not slept all night, come into work and my first mistake 1 hour in is migrating data from another project into a production database now i have redundant data and redundant tables, well done! fml
