Today we had a yearly company photoshoot... Fucking hate it..
Anyhow, the guy walked around office to take pictures of us in 'action'. However as a precaution he couldn't take pictures of the source code... So I was like:18 -
The new Dutch mass surveillance law goes into action on the first of May. I'll of course have a good security setup ready but that does not stop the bulk data collection.
I just setup a website which (still in English at the moment) requests a random search result from bing, google or DuckDuckGo every 3 seconds.
Will work on making it more 'real' :)
If stopping the surveillance isn't an option, let's add more data to filter out for them!38 -
Ignorant sales people and PMs who confuse a program's UI with the whole thing and ask you: why it took you so long, you just had to add a save button?
Yeah, asshole, adding a call-to-action style save button only took me 10 minutes, making it save your fucking data reliably took me a whole week.8 -

Corporate IT: Here at Company A we are very proactive about CyberSecurity!
Dev: What is our cybersecurity plan?
Corporate IT: If any breaches happen we will terminate those involved and discontinue use of the offending product
Dev: That sounds reactive to me
Corporate IT: 😡 It’s proactive actually as we put together that plan of action BEFORE anything happened!
Dev: …12 -
The laziest thing I've done was during an internship:
We had to open big table files in a special software, click on some buttons and then save it. Each step took 1-5 minutes untilnwe could proceed with a click on the next button. So I wrote a click script, predefined the mouse positions and run it all day. This was able to run for 1 hour straight with no human action needed, so I started using the new sparetime for more interesting stuff: Gaming.3 -

Job Ad: You will report to leadership stakeholders on key progress initiatives and collaborate on business value add action objectives.

It's disheartening to see a senior member of my team shitting on the code of less mature developers. Don't just say "this is unacceptable", elaborate, teach them. How are they going to action anything from that feedback?
Take the time to respond to their questions when they ask for clarification on what you're saying. Don't berate them.
Honestly some developers need to learn a thing or two about code etiquette.
There's no room for good cop / bad cop behaviour.10 -
Did you know, that adding the flag
"--libcurl" to you curl command, does actually create a .c file that you can compile and that tiny program will execute that exact command that you just performed in the terminal??
Example:
"curl http://linu.xxx/I_love_GOOGLE/4ever -# -k --libcurl"
It creates a .c file that perform that action when used.15 -
Who said programmers cannot solve hardware problems?
My router just said "Check hardware connection of your WAN port"
I took the cable out, blew in the socket and put it back in.

WTF - I discovered that wasps listen to me!
Earlier when one came in, I tried to catch it with a glass and release it, or kill it if that wasn't feasible. This year, I tried pointing to the window and ordering "get out!" just because I was too lazy to take action. Of course, I didn't expect it to work, but it did. I thought it was only a coincidence, so I kept trying it. It works every single time!
Crazy shit!13 -

At a festival where I was with my GF from back then, I asked her whether it was OK if I drank some more, which she was fine with, but she didn't get the implication.
Later in the tent, when I was totally drunken, she turned me around and wanted some action. The sudden movement didn't go well, I was just able to open the tent, vomited out of the tent, and turned around to continue sleeping.6 -
Friend: I can't download songs and videos in youtube
Me: You need to buy Youtube Red subscription to do in the official youtube app, but you can always use 3rd party services.
Friend: When I press the download button, the music isn't being downloaded, instead the numbers next to it gets incremented by 1
Me: WTF? What is that?
Friend: (shows the action to me)
Me: FML, (faints)
He pressed the dislike button because it looked like the download button and when he pressed the button, the number got incremented.8 -

I bought Minecraft back in 2007 or 8. It was $20 and gave me access to Minecraft forever, all updates included.
Today Microsoft closed all the old mojang accounts and I no longer have access to Minecraft. I could have migrated to a Microsoft account, but it will be a cold day in hell if I ever open one of those.
Sounds like law suit material. Class action anyone?12 -
I think I just figured out the function the matrix used for my gf's dog.

{
this.bark();

In the last weeks there has been some turmoil on the Fediverse (Mastodon, GNUSocial, Pleroma etc) about "how nazis prefer a certain kind of software and therefore must the developer of the software take action".
One solution is to make software "harder to install so nazis can't install one"
The thing is, that people like that do a better job of spreading the views and the message of the self-proclaimed nazis. I wish people just started to ignore them.6 -
Opening devRant is kinda becoming a reflex action for my thumb whenever I'm swiping through my homescreen
I'm loving it!1 -
When I was a young boy and I was writing my first programs, I remember I was sad because they were fast, unlike other applications I used daily and admired, with their long splash screens and the hard drive constantly making noise whenever you performed an action. At that time for me, 'slow' meant 'serious'.
It's fun to see how things have changed today: ensuring performance is a critical part of my job, and DAMMIT WHY HASN'T THE WEB PAGE LOADED YET?!?2 -
While working in Unity i caught this "action" shot of a ragdoll chicken.. Then i couldn't resist...1

I'm bored af so I'm creating a language based on images.
In one day I instantiated my first variable :D
Basically, the first pixel defines the action type (in this case, red = initialize variable), the second one defines the variable color (aka name), and the rest defines the value using grey scale (0-255, every r/g/b is a character).
I know this is soooooooo useless but I just want to do something particular.

I got a bug report with a typo in it. The subject read "...action X takes long time thank expected."
The thank is supposed to be "than".
I chuckled and immediately created a snapshot that shows the result of the action and the success message says, "Action successful, thank you for your patience."
I shared it with my team but no one even acknowledged it. 😞2 -

The whole idea of development is ego boosting. The idea of turning thought into action by building something is very intoxicating. The power to create something from nothing. To be able to construct a world where everything in that world follows my rules of existence. Whether those objects be a database, or an NPC in a game. Development is literally the power of a god!
Some people say I have a god complex. Yes, of course I do, I am a software developer...6 -

That strange moment an entire PHP project no longer throws any errors, warnings or notices and you don’t know if you should believe it or not.
It’s been a long day trawling the logs file by file, action by action, surely I’ve missed something or it’s just waiting to break like hell when I commit the changes. -

Dear customer, disregarding the bullshit your agency has dumped into Figma, I hereby deliver a clean, minimalist, and usable website without carousel sliders, chatbots, call-to-action teasers for newsletter signup, and muted auto-play videos consuming your end users' bandwidth.

I was about sign-out and collegue comes running that something is urgent and can't wait till next day.
I said fuck off to his face and told him to go and resume his tik-tok video. I signed out and left office. Next day he reported me to HR. Disciplinary action will taken against me starting next week.
Awesome 😎4 -
Never ask "How to start with X?". It's a dumb open-ended question with vague open-ended solutions.
Rather ask "I'm at X, want to do Y, I have Z proposed solution. Does that sound good?"
Builds context, focusses on action and is more efficient.2 -
Can someone explain the philosophy of the "not for me" downvote?
There are many things that are "not for me" in life, but, presumably, this action executes a global downvote on the post/comment---which is pretty much an expression of "not for anyone".
If this action were to train a recommendation engine---so I get recommendations that like-minded people see---then great. But why should that result in a public downvote?
I don't go up to people in the bar and say "Drinking Guinness? Not for me, mate." As an adult, I understand that my preferences are not universal.
Personally, I can't square the idea of "not for me" with its consequence of a public downvote.
I'm sure this must have been covered before...but all rants, as physiological and emotional activities, are unique. Your rant can never be mine.4 -
didn't anyone go for the "#define true false" joke? i didn't actually see it in action, but it would be a pretty harsh one.1

Bit of a bitch to get set up, but I made a SASS auto-recompiler with file watching. Windows was being a total ASS and sends the change event up to 4 times in my testing for a single file save action. It also renders the file unwritable for that time, throwing errors.
I literally had to add debouncing to make this work, but it's kinda nice now.6 -

Today, I was so certain that all the functionalities were implemented to handle some webhook calls from a third-party service. It's a script I wrote that has been running for 2+ years uninterrupted or without any issues.
We got some "complaints/notices" today that some "special" actions weren't registered, so I thought that the third-party service just didn't send those actions via their webhook. After some research I found a part where they explained that those actions trigger the webhook like any other action etc. So..
First thought: "okay, maybe they implemented that at a later stage" (was not the case)
Second thought: "maybe this is not what the client meant" (it was)
Third thought: "Then it should have been implemented" (it wasn't)
Okay, time to look at the code to see where this could get handled but apparently isn't. All the actions look good, nice, clean handeling etc, nicely documented code (gave the 'past-me' mentally a high-five)..
I scroll further down to that specific action and it was quiet obvious why it didn't work.. I just see an empty function with the comment:
"//TODO: maybe handle this action one day. don't know what this does atm, probably unused.. Will take a look at it next week.."
.. :D
I took my 'high-five' back..I just needed to copy-paste some other code and change 1-2 parameters..1 -

The purpose of toasts is to report a few words in response to a single and repeatable action. Don't put long error messages resulting from submitting an 8-page form in a toast.1 -

Why do Android apps not clear their own irrelevant notifications?
For example: If I mark all notifs as read within the devRant app, or archive an email in Gmail, or read a message in the Jira app, why does it not clear the status bar notification?
Is there a good reason, or is it just often overlooked by developers to perform a cleanup action like this?6 -

after 21 years today was the day i let go of my personal homepage.

What do you guys do to get away from conputers? I, for one started practicing card magic and i say it's really helped me. Card magic and programming are 2 polar opposites. For card magic, social inter action is necessary while programming gets pretty lonely. Anyways, i'm really curious about your other hobbyes33

People who put stickers on laptops... Are they badges of honour or aspirational?
So, if you code in VB6, but want to write Reason code, do you have VB6 stickers, showing you have lived through it, or Reason stickers, hoping that recruiters read your laptop stickers.
Or, is it just some undirected mess when you are handed a sticker and you put it on---like a reflex action?8 -
For whatever ungodly reason my containers library, which has extensive testing, profiling, and benchmarks against other containers libraries receives regular emails directed towards me about it, always one of two things
1) "don't reinvent the wheel" I have to assume these people haven't looked at the performance characteristics or features at all. I didn't waste away weeks of my life. I needed something and couldn't find it anywhere. I'm outperforming many crap implementations by nearly an order of magnitude, and can offer queries upon the containers in both generalized and specialized forms. As an analogy, I made airless 3d printed wheels, and people are regularly telling me I should still be using ancient wooden spoke wheels; they probably would argue in favor of using a horse drawn carriage as well. How is it possible technically minded people can also be so anti-progress?
2) "Please rewrite this in X language." You know what? YOU rewrite it. I chose what I did because it made it easy to do what I needed to do. Hilariously, the languages I get asked to use most often, are the same who's containers libraries perform worst in the benchmarks.
Both sound like half baked developers trying to sound superior. Pull your head out of your ass and actually outperform me and others. I'm so fucking sick of this "all talk no action" bullshit.5 -

When a vendor tells you you can't do certain things on their API because their database is not optimized, and then drops the bomb that doing a certain action that, when it happens to overlap with a completely different client doing the same action, causes their system to go down, you know it's a Tuesday that feels like it should be a Friday...
-
Jesus, I'm SO fed up with this mindless application of CRUD. This application would literally be less than half its current size if we weren't implementing crud for fucking broken device reports and repair offers, stuff that should have many states, a create action strictly bound to a user type and view/field wise edit phases bound to a state-usertype pair.
-
I made systems automated and effective, requiring less or no human action to process, was told it was to free up people for more sales and personal service, today I found out they fired the equilavent number of people to what my solutions made uneccesary. I really liked especially one of them and was hoping to ask her out. Guess that won't happen now. I feel horrible when my solutions cost people their Jobs.3

Have any of you pitched a directional or starting idea to bosses and have it go well? I feel like I'm at such a low "worked bee" level is have to send a lot of time preparing data to back up the idea. Also not sure if I should go to immediate boss who is cool but a little reserved about ideas like this or boss's boss who has more leverage to put an idea like this in action?3
-
I gotta say I hate and I love the part where I have no idea what I'm doing.
Sometimes it's the last time for that action -
I'm playing a PC game, Yakuza 0, for passing some free time. It's an action game so I get to fight and stuff.
In the latest mission, I'm supposed to run to the supermarkets (different ones too) and get 5 items for 5 NPCs to unlock the story progression.
I'm basically running errands for 5 NPCs.
What the fuck am I doing with my life3 -

Just spent the last few days learning about unity's custom editor stuff.
Gotta say it's really fun making tools that help setup stuff a lot easier
The thing I made has a bunch of actions and you randomize the action thats picked. You give each action a % chance and even have a % decrease when the action is used.
I ended up adding in a simulator in the inspector so you can test without even running the game :D pretty happy with the result! -
Today, I got some crap on my desk with possible bug reports from the field. They have been lingering somewhere for fucking MONTHS, and suddenly, an immediate answer was due. I was the unlucky one who was the least clueless about the product involved. SHIT.
OK, sifted through the reports. Some of them were duplicate, others obviously not our problem. No idea where to even start for the rest. FUCK, it's Friday!
But here comes "senior dev secret knowledge"(tm). Instead of saying WTF-IDK, I proposed an "action plan"(tm) (that BS term alone...) detailing the steps that we would need to take, and since I had no idea how long we would need, I just added enough steps in the "action plan"(tm) to make two weeks of investigation believable.
PM was very happy and just took that as direct customer reply. Now it's weekend anyway. :-) -
My best code review was when my merge request was accepted in less than a minute after creation. It was simple but I expected more time on review and accept action.

I’ve a client who wants the CTA (call to action) on his homepage - a button - to be the same colour as the background. The only way it won’t be invisible is because their will be drop shadow on it.
He thinks this will increase conversion. I think he’s insane.
Thoughts?8 -
Added an If/Else to the start of my Android app to ask for feedback. After writing the else I removed unneeded spacing. Then I ran the app... none of the action listeners worked. Turns out I accidentally deleted the closing bracket for else and when I said yes to feedback it never executes the reset of onCreate lol. Took a while to track down that mistake.

I made a GitHub Action which adds a "work-in-progress" loading gif to your README. 🦄
https://github.com/RocktimSaikia/...
You can use it as a nice little placeholder especially when creating a new repo until you actually update your readme with real docs.
(It will create a new README for you repo if there isn't one already.)
ps: I wanted to learn how GitHub Actions work so learned a lot by creating this tiny action.4 -
My dream project is a heavily story-driven game, with plenty of decision-making for the player and a lot of possible endings. With no money or time limits, I would make it with live action scenes. Just a great movie in which you have the final cut.

They should rename computer science at secondary school/a level to "recursion in action"... I really don't enjoy having to learn fundamentals again...

string action = day == "Monday" ? "Go to work" : "Friday" ? "Netflix & chill" : "Saturday" ? "Sleep all day" : "Sunday" ? "Get ready again for Monday" : "Code from 9-5";
I wrote nested ternary operators before and I swear I'd only use shorter conditions like the one below. 😳
string action = isTired == true ? "Get some sleep" : "Drink more coffee";5 -
Ok, users have devRant on the home screen or in notification's action bar. I'll make a kiosk system on my tablet to use only devRant in it, maybe now it will be useful.4

Roof is leaking... Due to rainy stormy weather here, I have now 3 buckets in my flat for catching the water.
Next thing that broke was the faucet in the kitchen... Whoever installed the kitchen (inherited from previous tenant) was a fricking fuck nugget. Not only are most important parts like the stove unbalanced (cooking is very fun...) - but most things were wrongly installed.
The rubber band under the faucet was a few mm larger than the faucet itself... Stretched out as someone really tightened the screws... Too tight. Friction tore the rubber band on one side. Note that the faucet is one of the large, pompous ones which weigh a fuckton. So the fucking faucet now - as the rubber band tore - turned into a sprinkler as the faucet moves due to water pressure.
Ok. Faucet out, new faucet in. Shouldn't be that hard.
Wait. Wtf?
Turns out they didn't use a milling head... The hole is a cone, top larger - then getting smaller.
Ok. No problem.
Let's do some drill action.
Uhm. Why is the place to the window wet... Oh. Great. Another leak.
*some mopping action*
Back to the kitchen. Realizing I didn't fully close the valve for water -.
Kitchen cabinet, next mopping action.
Water with saw dust is pretty ugly combination -.-
Aka: My relaxing Saturday became a full blown """Fuck you with an anchor""" day instead. Thanks universe. Love you hon. Please, next time put at least some lube on the anchor, entry is quite painful.13 -
Just realised I have not seen some regular users on devrant for a good amount them. Listing them now :-
linuxxx (Last action 75 days ago( a ++))
SortOfTested(Last action 51 days ago(a comment))
Linux(Last action 50 days ago(a ++))
This list might not be accurate3 -
Wait a moment sublime... really? I don't have the option to say no to all the 10,000+ replace action?
Now you have me clicking "No", "No", "No"... like a maniac! (-‸ლ)25 -
Just came across this in-browser presentation tool, sozi (free). See it in action

Fuckers didn't even give my account access to the fucking soap action I was calling after 3 weeks of email chains and other back and forth.
First the credentials I was given "we're fully set up" and now this BS??
Fucking test your live and sandbox environments work BEFORE you let your clients start their integrations.
And if they have issues, try to emulate the e-2-e test and prove you can complete the transaction yourself BEFORE emailing back 🤦1 -
DUNE is such a fucking SHIT movie. 80% of the movie is DRAMA. The first 1 AND A HALF HOURS IS DRAMA!!!!!! AND THEN A LITTLE BIT ACTION AND THAT'S IT. FUCK OFF. I WASTED MY MONEY AND 2.5 HOURS OF MY LIFE THAT I CAN NEVER GET BACK. THE FUCK?????14

Google is giving Google home for adding action on console without even checking that if it is the same questions that had been submitted by other user
I made 6 Gmail account and created same flash quiz and got 6 Google home and T shirts which cost about 49000 Indian rupees
So why is Google spending too much on just an action?5 -
It's too late for this but I just realized it so I'm sharing it anyway.
How do I get through tough dev days?
Depending on how tough it is going :
House music
Soundtracks for focus
Soundtracks for action (any Assassins here?)
AC soundtrack with chocolate.6 -
From the day I was born,

Deciding to make the website I'm working on a one pager with calls to API.
Why did I decide to make such an extensive API. 😅
API functionality includes:
user endpoint:
- log in/out
admin endpoint:
- edit user
- create/delete user
- create (sub)menu categories
- create items (install/test/image)
image endpoint:
- create image (of machines in array)
- restore image (of machines in array)
install endpoint
- install machines (Windows/Linux)
test endpoint
- auto-test (array of machines)
- test (array of machines, test)
Then the machine endpoint:
- if action in table then do action3 -
Glad to see the Senate disapproves of FCC's action. Now to the House.
I don't like either party, but Net Neutrality is pretty important.1 -
a deprecation *warning*. we IGNORE warnings. if they actually want us to do something about it they need to call it a deprecation error. and also probably prevent compilation. virtual smoking coming from the emulator wouldn't hurt either. if they expect action on these things, they're going to need to do better than warning.2

Hardest thing about being mid to sr dev, seeing the Dunning Kruger Effect in action from Jr developers.4

tl;dr never heard about rubber duck debugging before devrant
i didnt worked with Yii fw in the past but we bouth a site written in Yii and i wanted to add a form but could not pass the model to the view so i went for a smoke with my roommate to think about it
"i have the view, i have the model, the action but dont know how to pass the model variable because its an existing view..."
"...it should be passed to the render function in the existing index action but thats written somewhere else, so if i could pass it there..."
"...i can write the action there and then i should pass the variable to the render function in the index action and goddamit, so thats how you do it, thanks mate!"
he stared at me like wtf? o.O
room mate debugging ftw!1 -
Got pretty far with cleaning this project up:
https://github.com/Pulsar-Edit-High...
- Code refactorings
- Documentation reworks
- ..
However:
- Broken workflow ( Pulsars action is not yet released, ppm not properly installed )
- Changelog content is still .. yes
- Relative links are broken in package preview ( bug in IDE )1 -
I thought I was decent at Java until I saw it in action over an internship this summer... is it always so complicated or do I have more to learn?2
-
Dear other coders.. i press my enter key quite frequently. You do so, too.
Please don't make windows that jump into focus out of nowhere, asking me something important. I won't be able to read it and I'll just accept the default action, because I'll coincidentally press enter when your dialog spawns 100% of the time.
Thanks,
Someone like you.3 -
Is there a way to make the ( + ) Floating Action Button disappear down and reappear up on scroll event, like it does on all the Google apps with Material Design?2

Story time: Once I sent our android developer a project that he was supposed to compile and install on a test device. On my machine everything worked perfectly but on his machine ADB would keep failing to install the apk. After an hour of scratching our heads we figured out what happened:
He had just received a new Chinese action camera from Amazon and plugged it into his PC to charge. Turns out it's running rooted Android and runs ADB Debug mode by default. So the build script would try to deploy our phone app to his action cam instead of our test device5 -
When the project officially closes as successful, and you see it in action in the production environment, and leadership and customers are satisfied.

This advice made me happy today, so I want to share it with you guys!
1. Never overspend your income.
2. Never live your life full of jealousy and resentments.
3. Great opportunity doesn't come often, when it comes make sure you take action.
[If you want :) share some other great advice you've heard]4 -
One time, i would put a random stacktrace / error log containing fake server credentials/ card info etc on a page/ action letting those "hackers" waste their time digging into it.. only to found out that the server is just a repo of (i would like to say porn butthats still a win situation) useless things1

My friend from work got fired today for no apparent reason by his stupid boss to make things even worse this was his last action before changing a position in company and loosing power to fire someone. There is at least one good thing in all of this: he won't be able to do this again. Fuck stupid bosses.3

As a tech lead i sometimes find it very hard to defend developers for no fault of theirs.
Management is completely incapable of noticing hard data like git logs or action items updated on an excel and seems to have an idea that the devs are incompetent , but the ba that sets impossible goals and crap business documentation is competent.
Should i just let the project and juniors burn.2 -
Fun story, I keep discovering new ways of being shameless.
I had been once caught of basically giving my assignment (not one of my brightest moments)for a course to a friend and surprise surprise the instructor did take disciplinary action but he was a bit pissed so infact, he called out for a viva for all the assignments.
The Vivas went fine but immediately after I was done I was like "sir so I'm having a bit of trouble in this next assignment I was wondering if you could help me out" 😂 I have no clue what I was thinking nor was I proud of that.
Kudos to the instructor tho who calmly responded and actually helped me out with it.
Also due to some policy the action could not go ahead so yea guess things turned out fine. Im now hoping to see if he can keep me as an RA. Again, yes why am I like this. Good instructor tho. -
Got a phishing email with a link to a website hosted by wix. The only thing on the site was a form and submit button so I’m sure it’s for collecting credentials. I was able to report them and wix shut it down which was nice. But I was thinking, if someone were to ddos the web server, what action would wix do? Would they let the requests keep coming and increase the customers bill? Or would they just shut down the server?2

Weekly Out-Of-Context Thread
I'm looking for comments on rants. Not just any comments people, but comments that are non-sequiters, comments that are hilarious, or make no sense when taken from their original rant.
Anyone participating should link back to the original post to give credit. It would be great to get some regulars in here, but ideally we can prod some people into action that aren't on as much.
POST for our AMUSEMENT SLAVES! POST FASTER I SAY! FASTER!3 -
Update in earlier rant about work.
So I've basically made an flux store using Rxjs. Using symbol's as tagret data and an action. I asked my boss and another work colleague to do code review on the new system as I'm not sure their like it or understand what i was doing.
Passed fined.
2 weeks later i get a comment in some code that implement in basically asking whats all this and what is it doing.
-_- it's called really tidy shorthand code aha -

Haven't finished writing the documentation though.2 -

If you somehow, someway, for any reason didn’t know it, emails are valid action attributes for HTML forms.
Yes.
You can submit forms to emails, and it works for ages now. Backend isn’t needed.6 -
The company i work for is getting into scrum. Hired consultants, product owners and scrum masters. First action was 'lets spend 2 days in meetings estimating the rest of the project'.

GitHub Actions. That is all.
Well, not really. Trying to convert a grunt script which we have packaging our WordPress plugins to be done as a GitHub action instead and I'm about to throw my machine out of the window.5 -
Does anyone else find GitHub actions supremely fucking annoying? Everytime I've used it, I've been like "holy shit it would be amazing if I could do this intuitive action, only issue is it doesn't exist".2

This morning at 5:30 AM I was awoken to 20 text alerts for services being down.
Seems they had been down since 2 AM but the previous shift didn't take action.
Long story short:
An outsourced common component is unavailable, and the team responsible doesn't know how to troubleshoot.
I pointed them to the exact issue.
We are now 10 hours into the outage and they still don't know what to do. -
New StackOverflow Code of Conduct.
Seems like someone important see deviant posts about the community and how much it is appreciated, and took action.
Finally!4 -
Best part for me is when you see the final product. I do not mean once you're done working on the entire project (which is never true, always more to do! xD) but when you add a feature and it works.
Actually seeing it work, that gives me such a good, fulfilling feeling.
That has always been what attracted me to programming, or.. the main thing. -
Why QA should never be left "in charge" of marking priorities on tasks before "demo day" deployment and client handover of a product.
New and refactored, key, features need to be deployed by "demo day", and most developers and the PM (not me) have already been re-allocated to new clients and projects. There's several things being done in paralell to get it done.
QA: We need to be able to download CSV files showing affected users if i do extremely rare action X, and this should pop up in the system for the first 24 hours after doing X.
Priority: High
New priority for feature Y: Medium
(Action X may never be used at all)
This is implemented, reviewed and deployed.
QA: I want a timestamp in the file naming, I'm experiencing duplicate files.
Priority: High
Feature Y: Medium
Develop, review and deploy timestamping for the CSV files.
QA: They are only marked with DD/MM/YYYY, I performed rare action X several times in one day, I can still get duplicate file names marked with numbers. This is #1 priority!
Priority: High
Feature Y: Medium
...Okay, this is nitpicking, this will never happen, but fine. Overtime to do the extra minor, minor adjustment, down to hours and minutes, get it reviewed and deployed at the end of the day.
QA: I managed to do rare action X 6 times in 1 minute, I have duplicate files. It needs to be down to seconds. This is top priority.
Priority: High
New priority for feature Y: Low
.........
Constant interruptions, moronic priorities and voicecalls throughout the entire day.
Dear QA, you can be fucking donkeys at times.4 -
Why the fuck does my swipe back action gives a ++ on some posts?
Trying to undo it is impossible. The post will go from 15 to 16 and when I vote down, it goes to 14!!!!!3 -
Ever since I started learning about React with Typescript my respect for design patterns that restrict how state can change has grown massively. On the web, nothing happens when you say it should happen; everything always takes a while to execute and there is always a transactional period between validating an action with client-side state and receiving the result from the server, and if you want to account for that everything becomes infinitely more complex and you eventually end up with mutexes.5
-
Hi the community!
Do you have any recommendation to start learning about artificial intelligence?
I would like to build a bot like http://uxchat.me/ but who also need more complex action, like image recognition with OpenCV maybe.
Any book, link will be appreciated2 -
tldr; I failed a web class once, then practically taught people actionscript. Now i love JavaScript/Node.js because flash is icky.
-full story more or less-
I failed my first web design class in college due to not having enough time to actually study(I worked 2 jobs and took 6 classes like a moron). Anyway took a flash class prior to retaking my web class, I picked up on action script really quickly. As in I ended up helping other students better than the instructor was(she hadn't touched flash in like 5 years and was just an adjunct instructor). I got hooked with action script so I started teaching myself JavaScript, knocked the web class out like nothing after that and loved it. -
Can you give me some tips on how to debug a massive app? (Android app running on android studio which is basically intellij idea).
For example I need to fix a bug where a certain action results in unexpected behaviour.
But oh my god the codebase is so large (mainly architecture is MVVM and rxjava) that searching for the specific place is like searching for a needle in haystack.
For example I added a breakpoint in few places, but I can see only like 4 or 5 last frames in the stack that led to the current action, last frame is a lambda which doesnt help me so frankly Im unable to even track where current event started. I am loosing my mind. I cant even find where the buttonclick action started because everything is reactive and done with observables which can be anywhere.
Any tips on debugging will be appreciated7 -
dang. Messed up at work. Small action, big impact
Oddly enough. I thought I've outgrown this but still am being pretty stressed about it.
Weirdly, I think getting fired might put me more at ease than anything else.
Any theories?11 -
From: https://cloud.google.com/vpc/docs/...
---
Updating firewall rules:
You can modify some components of a firewall rule, such as the specified protocols and ports for the match condition. You cannot modify a firewall rule's name, network, the action on match, and the direction of traffic.
If you need to change the name, network, or the action or direction component, you must delete the rule and create a new one instead.
---
REALLY???? goddamn delete and create a new rule to damn changing even its name???
And they wonder why their goddamn cloud won't take off? hell... how can this even be a Google product!!??5 -
How do you know that you are stuck in a job without longterm perspective (besides some undefined gut feeling)?
And what to do then? It seems to me, only possible action is to change job. Is there any, less extreme, alternative? -
A friend introduced me to mIRC and told me it's a good place to meet girls. I however ended up meeting people who showed me nice things you can do with HTML.
From that I learnt other stuff such as mIRC scripting, Flash action script, etc... -

Been put on a personal action plan because I'm not finishing my work fast enough. Work that the team lead dumped on me because he claims to have no time for it. But -I- am going to have my bonus pulled by the boss if I don't finish it by the end of the month. This is ridiculously unfair. Good thing I got a job interview next week at another company. Sooner I get out of here the better. I'm so angry over this unfair bullshit.

What a mess ^^
From one moment to another unit-tests on my local machine stopped working.
There was a PHP fatal error, because of insufficient memory.
Actually, there was a ducking "unit"-test of a controller action "log".
This action returns the content of the projects log file...
Since this log file grew over the time, PHP tried to assert the response of the controller action which was sized about 400MB.
C'moooooon guys!
What were your thoughts behind this bullshit? ^^ -
Today a colleague received a weird Excel message, it reads:
Unexpected error
Unfortunately a problem has occurred. Restart Excel, in case the problem persists.
Copy details
The action buttons are awesome!
Send frowns / Close :D
It'd be interesting to see what kind of frowns are being sent there... :D4 -

Rewriting my Swift app in React Native and being told I should get familiar with Redux now...
I have written some REALLY complex stuff in my career, but I simply cannot wrap my head around "state," Redux, or why.
After adding in Redux and converting to it's folder structure, adding a random action, type, container, and reducer, and my app still works the same way I'm left wondering: "why did I need this?"3 -
"Ok. I need to gather a bit more information to pinpoint the cause. When you say it is not working, how precisely is it not working? Does the program not open at all? If it does open, is there a specific action that you can do to reliably cause it to fail? Is it not working on only one computer, or is it failing on all computers?"
"When you click the icon it say to call support"1 -
In the beginning, even those who are remotely involved with the task/project want to contribute to it. Over the time, as they realise that there is some serious work to do, one by one the turn quiet and drop out.
But as soon as you take action to make sure that the whole thing is going to work out in the end, they come back complaining because they feel that you went over their heads.
WTF?! -
So I have replaced npm with yarn due to performance boost and the lockfile.
Never will there be problems with unexpected versions of dependencies!
Wait.
Why is my build writing a yarn.lock?
It turns out, if you want yarn to exit with an error code if it's out of sync with the package.json, you have to run it with:
$ yarn install --frozen-lockfile
Only then it will produce an error.
The default for it is to notice, oh, there is some new dependencies, let resolve this to the most current version I can fetch, and use that one, and write a new lockfile. Meaning you will get unknown futures of a depdency. O_o
That's totally going besides the purpose of having a lockfile in the first place. Why would anyone want this?
Action I do expect to touch the lockfile:
add / remove / upgrade
Action I do NOT expect to touch the lockfile:
install
Install should just install whatever is in there, and if it realizes it is out of sync, die with an error.
But that would make sense!
Who needs sensible defaults anyway!?5 -
thank you devrant for giving me a forum to complain about developers who rant to change the route config file because they don't know how write a simple action link.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is Elden Ring lite and i fucking LOVE it! It’s Elden ring combined with that classic action rpg vibe I grew up with! And the climb the enemy feature is damn SICK (nothing screams being a fucking man like climbing the back of a huge beast and plunging a sword down its skull)
Here’s to sticking a sword up an ogre’s ass!4 -
It's so weird that the avatars of profiles with originally no avatars at all keep changing.
I think that's a feature. Maybe an Halloween feature. Who knows

I heard a lot about phone scammers, every time I go to bank website I read message that they will call me and steal my money. I couldn’t wait to get my scam call.
Finally someone called me poorly pretending to be bank employee.
Scammer: We detected suspicious activity on your account, did you transfer xxxx amount of money to company yyyy ?
Me: Yeees ( waiting excited for more action )
Scammer: ….. thank you …… hang up
Next time I will try donkey sound. -
Just found out what deadlocked processes are and it really has a lot of potential for teenage instagram sentimental quotes.
"Two processes that are kept on wait indefinitely because the only thing that could end the wait is an action by one of them" with some pretentious looking font and a picture of like, a rose in black and white or some shit is Instagram gold -
i always come up with great ideas and think how cool they would be once i program them, the problem is that i'd need instagram's user base to put my idea in action1

O great devs that know grep I have a log that I took from a local company's router that got DOSsed yesterday (they sell very nice sandwiches) and I wanted to know how I can take only the IP's from the log so that I can take action against the users (contacting the abuse if the ISP)10

Oh, joy, another meeting. Because nothing sparks joy like discussing the same issue for the umpteenth time.

There are no program's faster in letting me jump of mountain than mysql workbench. For fuck sake, every action I need to wait for 5 seconds to let it respond. Let me do my work please.5

I can't tell if this is a windows sourcetree problem or mercurial, but trying to do anything on this is a pain. Every action takes 3-4 seconds (including switching between history and working copy).

The "voluntary" Affirmative Action tracking questions on your site's job applications are no longer voluntary if you don't have an "I choose not to say" option and refuse to accept the placeholder "Choose One"...
"Refusal to provide this information will not subject you to adverse treatment." ...other than the inability to submit your application, of course. -
oh boy can't wait to use the new Action Replay function they added in Teamviewer

I am laravel developer who just started to explore advanced part of it. I have a confusion with topics events and queues. Events are call when an action is performed in the application where as queues are job for repeated and long tasks. My question is when to use both of them? Can we use a queue inside an event?2

On the contact page of my project, I want to send data from a HTML form.
What would you use to send it?
Just the regular <form action="/path/to/handler"> and cause a page refresh or use javascript (jQuery) for it and not cause a page refresh?
In both cases, a message will be shown on success or failure.7 -
Interesting NY Times article today Saturday March 26 2016 by Markoff and Lohr, "A Race to Take Control of Artificial Intelligence And the Future of Tech". Lots of C levels will read this article and ask CIO if AI on radar. Will fan the fire. Also a lot of VC action. Google TensorFlow open source. Microsoft also all in and of course IBM Watson. Google beat Go grandmaster 4-1, which is tougher than chess program. Something to keep on your radar. Have fun!

Passwordless Unix login leading to a console menu. You can then FTP in for free and remove ~/.login . Boom ! Shell access! And I already had a superuser access from another "dialog" asking to confirm a dangerous action with the superuser's password. Boom! Root access !!

feature request / suggestion / wish:
i would love to "reblog" posts, or any other way they will be visible in my profile ("mark as favorite", "star"...).
the idea behind it is to have a nice little collection of posts i want to keep available to me.
i even have a suggestion for naming the action: "inherit post" ;)
hopefully i did not just miss an already implemented feature :P4 -

So, ya boi was making a google action and struggling with account linking. Everytime I tested, it just instantly crashed. 3 days of asking slack forums and searching online.
I was so desperate that I made a second account and made it an editor on my skill. Tried to test and there we go.
Google actions don't run account linking when the owner tests it. Well played google, well played -
Share an action says add more people to test your actions.
And also it says once the user has opened the link shared, they can start.
But on the Assistant app on mobile, I can't find my app. Anyone into this?6 -
Sometimes taking no action is the best course to move forward...
Especially when there is a power cut at home and phone battery reaches below 10% -

Yeah, it's Friday morning and guess what I left my laptop work yesterday and who just got a text saying that the server is on their ass.. yeah you are right ME. And my team who can do the same job as me on restarting the application don't ever take action on this kind of thing... Well I hope they will in a few weeks because I will be gone then2

I'm working with Android for past 1.5 month and recently I joined as an Android Developer Intern at a company for 2 months. What should be my next action?4

Lately been doing a lot of GitHub action stuff so created a Yeoman generator to scaffold javascript-based Github actions.

For the first time, I will use “developer rant” for learning sth.
I am trying to learn concurrency in cpp. I tried CPP Concurrency in Action but the book is dry, no examples. Can you suggest a book with good examples and exercises, like CPP Primer?2 -
Hi, so currently I am developing a program in Java that requires a few enums (I'm new to them and so far they are pretty awesome) and currently I want to create an enum that requires a single field, an instance of another enum. So in the first enum's constructor, I'm setting all the parameters into a new instance of the second enum, however, I'm getting "Enum1 has private access in Enum2!".
I'm off for the day but rq I just wanted to ask if anyone could help me with this. I'll be back in a few hours!1 -
Sveltekit's progressive enhancement on forms is an obstacle more than a tool.
Submit buttons stop working when they want.
Other buttons in the forms may trigger an action via POST if their type is not defined.
Everything with no feedback whatsoever. At least tell me I'm an idiot in the form or let me know why a button type="submit" does nothing to send the form data 🤦1 -
Small Indie Group,we've been developing our first action top down rng dungeon explorer, pictures will be posted soon1

@dfox love your work. Have an enhancement request for IOS app badge counter: tapping on notification symbol in top right corner to view +1's should be the action to clear the badge counter for +1's, not the action of tapping on individual +1's (there's nothing to read when tapping on them)7

Went to a dotNET interview yesterday and I had to do a simple MCV app. They were using Visual Studio 2017, so I thought "cool! I can use some C# 6-7 features!". But for some reason it didn't build...and the errors were not very helpful!
Also my ajax calls kept refreshing the page, even though I was calling preventDefault() in the form submit action 😣1 -
Is this a devRant bug?
I have a persistent (1) on my in-app notification bell (Android). I can't find any unread notification. It should be a comment notification. Maybe somebody generated such a notif, my phone picked it up, and then the other person undid the action that lead to the notif? (E.g. un-++, remove a comment or mention, delete their account, ???).
I see the (1) notification to on the web, and I can't find the actual notification there either!5 -
I like iOS human interface design much more than the Android's material design, though I am an Android user. It has some unimportant design components IMO. I feel that the default action bar title is too big. Also that floating action button is weird sometimes. It hides some important portion of the contents in poorly designed apps.

When your code works then you have this inclination to add an extra feature and after adding it ,it works after catching a few bugs but then .... you feel so smug with yourself you add another feature and that stuff ups all YOUR CODE !!!and if you haven't saved a copy of the program before editing y0ur program so the eaaiset option you have I to use CTRL -Z and if you have been altering your code a lot the undo action only goes back a few alterations and hasn't undone your extra feature then you have to manually find the feature and clean it from your code taking longer then creating the program as a whole
=======
The undo action needs to save more alterations of the code 😑1 -
A controller action taking a string input and directly accessing the file system with it, returning the file.

I can't count likes form my database for an specific post. I made a function that will count all the like by "post.id". It shows the like on the web page when I clicked on like button and it disappears when I refresh the browser. but likes are still remaining in the database but it won't appear on the webpage.
Here are the flask code:
def like_count(post_id):
if request.form.get('like') != None:
if (Like.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).all())==[]:
return 0
else:
return Like.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).count()
else:
return 0
def dislike_count(post_id):
if request.form.get('dislike') != None:
if (Dislike.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).all())==[]:
return 0
else:
return Dislike.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).count()
else:
return 0
Here are the html code:
<!--dislike-->
<form method="POST" action="">
<input name="dislike" value="1" class="input-style" >
<input value="{{post.id}}" name="post_id" class="input-style">
<button class="fas fa-thumbs-down" class="like-button" >
<div class="like-count" >
{{dislike_count(post.id)}}
</div>
</button>
</form>
<!--like-->
<form method="POST" action="" >
<input name="like" value="1" class="input-style" >
<input name="post_id" value="{{post.id}}" class="input-style" >
<button class="fas fa-thumbs-up" class="like-button" >
<div class="like-count" >
{{like_count(post.id)}}
</div>
</button>
</form>8 -
Quand ta MOA te demande de réaliser des action en recette, que tu les fait sur l'environnement nommé REC mais qu'en fait, il fallait le faire sur DEV1...
sorry i don't know how to translate this... -
Xcode UI test recording is fucking abysmal. For a simple tutorial "todo" app that I wanted to add a test to, it generated a completely imaginary toolbar selector, a syntactically incomplete eight-line garbage monstrosity instead a button selector, and entirely missed off the last action.
Don't get me wrong, I really like that there is a way to automate UI tests, but the promise of test recording is massive fucking lie.1 -
The report button is in the place where reply should be.
I'm a lefty and even I use my phone mostly with right thumb. Also it's very easy to report a comment without noticing (happened to me twice. Reported a perfectly legit and appropriate comment because of awkward report action placement.
IMHO opinion the report action should be placed anywhere else in the post but where it is now.1 -
Besides the helpful rubber duck, have anyone opted for something else? I think I would be the only one use a action figure of S.S. Goku.1

I am creating a new android app and I am also a web developer and i know that links are also set to be opened in new tabs and whenever this action will happen, my browser might get stuck or might call intent service.I want to get the links which it wants to open in new tab and whenever this happens I can programm my browser to handle this event.3

I want to automate log files using ansible automation.
How can I scan log files & take action on them ?2 -
want to dispatch an action from clicking a button, but dispatch() doesn't exist
add @connect to make dispatch() exist
other stuff crashes because @connect is actually a macro for a wrapper instead of the decorator it pretends to be
get locked in stalemate because both features kind of need to not crash -

We learn everyday. So for the early hours of today, I've learnt how to use redux(reducers and action) to manage my state and hell, my components are looking alot organized now than calling set and setState everywhere.
Learnt that fetchById was replaced by fetchByPk for fetching single item when using sequelize in Node.js
Learnt you can display images in your django admin panel. Haven't thought about it until today.
Well end of rant.

I'm currently refactoring some Fastlane code at work, and I'm wondering what is the fundamental difference between a "lane" and an "action"? I can't really find anything in their documentation explaining the difference.7

In Spring/Boot if you annotate a class as a Service is it started on a different thread? I used @PostConstruct to start listening to a connection.
The class with main () seems to just load Beans defined in the AppConfig?
I need it to start a thread that listens to a Mongo Changestream and trigger some action on each.
I noticed a log line under the watch() is never reached so seems it's blocking...8 -
For those who do hiring, do you find behavioral questions to be useful?
If yes, do you prefer it when the candidate gives specific answers from their work experience? Do you use a rubric? For example, do you use the STAR (situation, task, action, response) method or something similar?
If no, why don’t you use behavioral interviewing?1 -

Whenever I try to copy any text from any webpage & create a list, there are a lot of things to do. Switching multiple windows, ctrl+c, ctrl+v, then again do the same for the next selected text.
Is there any Chrome extension out there to solve this exact problem? Less action to copy-paste texts?
Or should I make one? How many of you are likely to use something like this?
