If restaurants functioned like Microsoft:
Patron: Waiter!
Waiter: Hi, my name is Bill, and I'll be your Support Waiter. What seems to be the problem?
Patron: There's a fly in my soup!
Waiter: Try again, maybe the fly won't be there this time.
Patron: No, it's still there.
Waiter: Maybe it's the way you're using the soup; try eating it with a fork instead.
Patron: Even when I use the fork, the fly is still there.
Waiter: Maybe the soup is incompatible with the bowl; what kind of bowl are you using?
Patron: A SOUP bowl!
Waiter: Hmmm, that should work. Maybe it's a configuration problem; how was the bowl set up?
Patron: You brought it to me on a saucer;what has that to do with the fly in my soup?!
Waiter: Can you remember everything you did before you noticed the fly in your soup?
Patron: I sat down and ordered the Soup of the Day!
Waiter: Have you considered upgrading to the latest Soup of the Day?
Patron: You have more than one Soup of the Day each day??
Waiter: Yes, the Soup of the Day is changed every hour.
Patron: Well, what is the Soup of the Day now? Waiter: The current Soup of the Day is tomato.
Patron: Fine. Bring me the tomato soup, and the check. I'm running late now.
[waiter leaves and returns with another bowl of soup and the check]
Waiter: Here you are, Sir. The soup and your check.
Patron: This is potato soup.
Waiter: Yes, the tomato soup wasn't ready yet.
Patron: Well, I'm so hungry now, I'll eat anything.
[waiter leaves.]
Patron: Waiter! There's a gnat in my soup!
The check:
Soup of the Day . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5.00
Upgrade to newer Soup of the Day. . . . . . . . $2.50
Access to support . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $1.009 -
Friend sees me learning React js.
Friend: "Why are you always studying? Your exams are over and you already have a job."
Me: "Because I don't know it and it looks interesting?"
Friend: "What a waste of time..."
I try to upskill myself and friend gives me shit.
He's the type of guy that would watch a 5min YouTube video on a topic and suddenly become an expert in it.
I believe that a day without new knowledge is a waste of a day.
Dont know if that's normal or I'm just weird. But I still stand by it.24 -

Surprisingly, this was one of the top recruiters in my country. Never knew, MNCs can be so so inefficient for such simple tasks.
Start-ups are way better in this regard. Latest tech, small community, minimal bureaucracy and a lot of respect and things to learn.15 -

New job (first CS job).
Day 1: Install Ubuntu
Day 2: Dev said "it was so cute when he asked if he could uninstall windows." Also, first pair programming with engineer of 12 years. First commit (he did all the work, I just tried keeping up."
Day 3: "Here, try this bug " nearly get there. Have to leave early. Team event (Group VR experience, was wicked fun with drinks afterwards. Turns out boss man is a total bad ass. Swam with sharks and giant Wales)
Day 4: Fix bug. Notice odd behaviour. Fix that too. (All on my own). Code review: "This, that but works and is good." Get asked if I want to go to customer to do A, B and C. Tell Boss I only know B. He said "Tell me what you need for A and C."
I'm so God damn happy.8 -
Notice :
We strongly advise people to use Windows as their primary operating system as it provides a totally free and a great tool or a utility known as Backdoors.
Here's a simple explanation of a backdoor for the people who don't know what a great tool it is :
Just as most of the citizens have a secondary door to their home through the yard, similarly a backdoor is a secondary access to your Computer which you (not us) can use it in cases of emergencies when you forget the passwords.
Please cooperate
Have a great day :)29 -
How do I un-idiot my users when it comes to clicking on dodgy email-links??
Got a forwarded email just there from a user who said;
Good afternoon,
Is the below ok to open?
I just tried but got a popup saying I've been blocked from opening it.
I'm not sure who it is coming from and I am not waiting on anything but as it says its from dropbox and is important, i know it's okay.
Can you unblock the link ASAP please?
This is really impeding my work-day as I need to know what it is and act accordingly.
Regards... user.
The Original email came from a random jumble of letters with a subject line of 'important dropbox program' - not only does it look dodgy but its english is horrible! It said;
"Hi tu my freind,
You tu still read a pending verrry important document sent by one of your own contact to be vieweddd.
Install "Highly Confidential english.pdf" by clickinggg here
*insert link leading to something called 'viral-update-trojan.exe'*"
I mean, seriously... help!!! 😢
We have sent emails explaining how to hover over links and to not to click them if it looks wrong.
No one does it.
We hired a company to send fake phishing emails to train users in what to do.
It made no difference!
We now make people 'verify' their email addresses when opening any sort of link to try get them to actually look at what they're opening.
We also strip emails of original attachments and create 'safe' html copies as we can't trust them to look at what they're opening.
Everyone complains about it but Jesus Christ, this is why!!!
Its so exhausting!! What is wrong with people!!! Argh!!! 😤16 -
When i said i'll deliver a feature by end of the day, they thought it after 5. But what i really mean is 11.59pm9

Manager: Give me an estimate for this project.
Me: It will take end to end approx two months.
Manager: Can you do it in a day. Make some magic happen. This is high critical for business.
Me: Sure. I have a small requirement from you to achieve it.
Manager: What
Me: Please get me the 'Limitless' capsule.9 -
(The PM is pretty technical)
One day:
Me: Could you create this subdomain?
PM: Sure, just a sec.
Me: Ohh and could you add a letsencrypt cert? (one click thingy)
PM: Why would you need that on this kinda site...
Me: Well in general for security...
PM: Nahh.
*walks away*
Next day:
(referring to my internship manager/guider as Bob)
Bob: Hey... we have a new subdomain!
Me: Yup!
Bob: Wait why is there no letsencrypt certificate installed...?!?
Me: Well, the PM didn't find that neccesary...
Bob: (Oo) of course it is... are we going for security by default or what?
Me: Yup agreed.
Bob: *creates cert and sets everything up in under a minute*
It wasn't a high profile site (tiny side project) but why not add SSL when you can for free?8 -
So... m starting my internship tomorrow. 4 months, 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
M VERY anxious and quite frightened to b honest.
Wish me luck guys 😨😨😅😅
It is kinda what I wanted though... contains web parts but also C++ 😍
Tech stack: c++, JS, Python 😅26 -
I have had this conversation well too often:
- (him/her) Do you mind helping me with this problem I have on my computer ?
- (me) Sure, what is it ?
- (him/her) *proceeds to explaining the problem*
- (me) Ok, I don't know about this particular thing, you should try googling it.
- (the pissed off version of him/her) Never mind, I'll find someone who's willing to help me.
Please stop taking that as me not caring about your problem.
Googling things is basically what I do all day as a developer.
You really should try it. That thing is actually pretty useful.5 -
Oh dear, another Tuesday!
That means I'll probably get chewed out for something in front of the entire company. What for, you ask? The boss is inventive, so it could be anything.
Instead, I'm calling in sick and taking the day off. 😊13 -
Ok you fucks that don't believe in documentation - me included.
Document your shit, because one day, one day some dumb fuck is going to have to recreate your over engineered bullshit of a system and scale it up.
What would fucking be useful right now is ANY god forsaken insight into what in the flying fuck your code is doing, or not doing, or why it makes queries to a database with no fucking records in it 🤦♂️ and then attempts to use that data... in case it did exist.
There's nothing like unpicking a mess of bullshit, and documenting it, and then have to remake it on a new platform.
Documention saves lives kids, maybe your own life one day😬16 -
Spent 4 hours trying to figure out what is wrong. Next day, without morning coffee, fixed it & published in 10 mins.9

Today @ 4pm:
New dev: I need help with this issue, i've been stuck on it all day.
Me: ok let's look ...... ok, and did you try google this?
New dev: ... no
Me: ... why?
New dev: well this is clearly my issue, why would I google it? I only google for things I don't know
Me: ... ok ... we'll do you know what this bug is then?
New dev: haha ok, fair point, I'll give that a try. Thanks for the tip.
Seriously, should I be worried? I feel worried13 -
Hey DevRant community :-) I’m Milo, I’m quite new to this app and to be completely honest I’m already addicted to it! And honestly just having a community which is full of developers or people with common interests like myself just makes me feel warm and happy! .
A bit about myself I’m from Australia and gained an interest in Coding about 2 years ago where i landed a course in TAFE. Now i had absolutely no prior experience i was a complete rookie, first day was basically (if I remember) only one day of using the console with what I remember to be sequential programming. Well after that it was all GUI and a disaster i had no clue whatsoever of what i was doing and well interestingly enough i still managed to enjoy it and move on😅.
Fast forward about six months I’m now doing a proper degree and actually understanding concepts and better at coding and i love it!. Welp guys & gals i thank you for taking the time to read my post I certainly hope i posted this in the right section! :-)
Hope you all have a great night or day where ever you may be!.29 -
Day 1:
Me: 'Hi'
Middleware guy: 'Raise a Jira. We have always been so accommodating. Contact your manager.'
*Jeez*
===
Day 2:
Me: 'Could you please start the server in dev environment? I am a new joiner. I don't have access. Here is a jira.'
Middleware guy: 'Deadlines may be for you. It is not for me. Wait until tomorrow.'
*Damn, did he get a divorce recently?*
===
Day 5: *An urgent delivery asap* 'Hi, could you please do the configuration of the new app in staging?'
Middleware guy: 'So, here is the split up...
Task 1
Task 2
Task 3
Task 4
Task 5 & 6
Your app will be configured by tomorrow first half hopefully.. Oh and you can escalate if it is too late..
'
*What a b...*
===
Day 8:
Me: *Doing late sit for pushing a task* 'Hi, we have an issue. The server is not starting. Could it be due to..'
MW guy in 'second' shift: 'Oh, we don't extend support on unusual hours'
Me: 'But this is second shift.'
MW guy: 'Yeah, but I have to go home early now...'
====
Day 10:
Team Lead: 'Any innovative solutions?'
Me: 'Let's go SERVERLESS!' :D12 -
One day at a doctor who started a small conversation:
Doc: What is your job?
Me: I am a software developer, I write computer programs basically.
Doc: Interesting. How does it work?
Me: Oversimplified you have special languages to tell the computer what to do and then this is converted into a program you can start on your PC. The languages are a bit like basic english (thought of Pascal at this moment).
Doc: So then it is a pretty simple job.
Me thinking: OMFG yes that's why I studied it 6 years, because it's soo easy.
Me thinking at home: Next time tell them that you are a computer scientist and that it is applied mathematics basically. Maybe then they will get a clue of the complexity. 🤔14 -
made a password sniffer in python it was really easy how many of you took #100DaysOfCode i took the challenge 8 days today every day i am doing one project what do you think of the sniffer? it currently doesn't support SSL response but working on that right now this is good15

Dad: [this company] is coming to town soon.
Me: I know
Dad: yeah maybe you can get a IT job
Me: I dont do IT
Dad: You never know what you do until you do it.
Me: *getting an aneurism from sheer ignorance*
I DO IT EVERY DAY HOW WOULD I NOT KNOW WHAT IM DOING THAT I EVEN WENT TO SCHOOL FOR?15 -
Started my new internship for the summer.
"Hey, our client's prestashop is getting really slow, could you please do something about it ?"
I go poke around to see what i can do, and after some research i see the problem. The search bar was taking 20-60s to load what was sometimes 16 objects.
The client was using a prestashop with the default search engine. 175000 products were registered. NO WONDER IT'S FUCKIN SLOW.
So on my first day of internship i entirely re-coded prestashop's product search function. I feel like this is not internship level stuff.5 -
Just curious, how is it like to work as a developer. I mean, as a profession and not a hobby or freelancing.
From devRant, so far I know that you work in an office, the managers and bosses are assholes, and people always write unmanageable and undocumented code.
What else is it like? Do you get to work alone or do you have to work with people? Do you stay there all day long?
I know its still going to be a while for me, but I want to know how it will be like.24 -
Yes, I love my parents.
But every fucking time I plan to buy a PC they will make some noise. I am not even touching their money to buy it yet they will make a fuss about it.
"All my son does is sit in front of computer whole day"
Sorry father but I am doing the same thing in my job. They are young enough to know what I am doing yet still keeps ranting on me.
I still love them but this is so annoying sometimes.6 -
Porting over code to python3 from python2 be like:
(Cakechat, in this case)
Day 0 of n of python 3 compatibility work:
This should be _easy_, just use six and do magic!
Day 1 of n:
Oh, true division is default instead of integer division, so I need to replace `/` with `//` in a few places.
Day 2 of n:
Oh, map in python2 behaves differently than map in python3, one returns a list, other an iterator. Time to replace it with `list(map())` then.
Day 3 of n:
Argh, lambdas don't evaluate automatically, time to fix that too.
Day 4 of n:
Why did I bother trying to port this code in the first place? It's been so long and I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT IS BROKEN BECAUSE THE STUFF RUNS WHEN I BREAKPOINT AND STEP THROUGH BUT NOT WHEN I RUN IT DIRECTLY?!
Day ??? of n:
[predicted]
*gives up*
I've had enough.4 -
Hi Fellas !
I'm new here. I have no idea what makes you get so many ++ and what ++ can do for you.

Jingle fuck, jingle fuck,
Jingle fuck away.
Oh what fun it is to hear
silence on the Christmas day.2 -
Whenever I see a programmer or hacker coding in a movie, I pause the movie and see if I can understand what the code is trying to do. If I can't understand it, I feel sad the rest of the day thinking I'm not a good enough programmer.7
-
Just because you can learn HTML in a day doesn’t mean that you don’t need a degree.
Did you know that your browser, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and even your operating system use linked lists, binary trees, hash tables, and other so-called “useless” data structures?
It’s important to understand the roots and fundamentals of computer science even if you won’t use that knowledge day to day.
It changes your perspective on programming once you learn what actually goes on under the hood, and makes you think twice about the impact of what you write.
It’s relatively easy to get a programming job without a degree nowadays, but it often leads to web developers claiming that degrees aren’t important to their web apps.
There is much more than just the web to computer science, and that’s something to always keep in mind.10 -
First post.
Went for an interview today. Guy asked me to write chess and gave me a pen and a single blank page. Wondering what does he mean by that, he said start and we will see. Still confused what i am suppose to write, told him it will require way more than one paper to write chess. His response you are not interested in coding. I was like what the hell is going on. After 5 minutes, HR came and told me I can leave for the day.9 -
Can't tell what my most successful project is...
But according to GitHub Stars, my
most successful project is my RandomQuote Bot (@RandomQuote).
The story behind it is pretty boring:
One day little Skayo thought: "Hey there is no bot on DevRant yet, let's make one!".
Then he began to think: "But what should it do? What would be easy to do for an inexperienced programmer like me?".
Suddenly he got an idea: A Bot that posts a random quote everyday!
Yay!
He instantly started making it.
About a day later, it was finished.
"Let's bring this thing to live", he thought.
And there he was, quickly getting a lot of fucking ++'s...
This bot is like my first born child! I am so proud of him!
And that's the story behind the bot.
Very spectacular, isn't it?4 -

"I keep complaining to you guys every day about this bug and nothing happens!"
Firstly, it ain't a bug. Secondly, you're not complaining, you're whining. Thirdly, complaining is a bloody limited resource. If you do it once a year, everyone's going to sit up and take notice. If you do it daily, it's just "Duncan having another moan", and the only thing anyone will do is play "what time of day will Duncan rant" sweepstakes. -
Last year in my computer class, i was sitting next to the girl i likED. One day we were doing a classwork and i asked her for the IP adress (everyone in the class was supposed to know what is it and how to check it). Five minutes later she came back telling me the adress (streets, numbers) of the school...
You were perfect until that moment...7 -
Dear manufacturers..
Can we stop releasing special edition products and calling them 'Founders Edition'... How do you get the 'Founder' part?
Primary example are Google and NVIDIA, massive companies with enough money to do whatever they wanted and selling a controller or graphics card as 'Founder' is just bullshit, we aren't founding anything, its already there so just call it what it is, a slightly 'Pretty Edition' and call it a day .-.10 -
She : What is this crap you have opened ..umm... In Android Studio?
That was the day i learnt i need to write code in proper way. And i started improving it.
😂😂😂😂 -
That moment when you spent an entire day making an awesome webpage (dark themed) and your pm tells you to change almost everything in it because he wants a light-themed website.
Fuck Everyone
(BTW now half the website is dark-themed and other half light-themed because pm doesn't know what he wants)5 -
Seriously does this master/slave bullshit actually affect everyone here?
From what I’ve seen it’s just a fucking idea / suggestion not a full blown change set being implemented.
Stop fucking over reacting to bubble wrap nonsense, if you want to call it a master/slave relationship then call it a fucking master/slave relationship and be done with it, if this really offends you or you believe political correctness is needed here, go call it something else, at the end of the day it’s still going to be the same thing, just called something else.9 -
Do you know what's better than getting work done. HAVING ANOTHER F****ING MEETING ABOUT WHAT WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE!
I COULD'VE HAD MOST OF THIS SHIT DONE BY NOW BUT I HAVE TO SPEND 1/2 OF EVERY DAY JUST EXPLAINING WHAT THE F***K I'M DOING, WHAT THE F**K EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING, AND THEN EXPLAINING WHY IT HASN"T BEEN F***ING DONE!
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY EVERYONE IS LEAVING WHY YOU CAN'T RETAIN ANYONE? YOU HIRED THEM AS FREAKING ENGINEERS PROMISING THEM THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO DO THINGS AND THEY SPEND ALL DAY IN F***ING MEETINGS WASTING THEIR IQ AND WISHING FOR DEATH!
GGAAAHHHHH! BY THE EMPEROR PLEASE COMMISSAR END ME!4 -
Talked with my boss about documentation for projects in markdown instead of (shiver) MS Word. My boss laughed after I explained what mark down was and said that she did not want a world where we had to edit text files all day.
Wait? What do you think programming is?!?
Also Word is basically a text file with tons of proprietary bloated junk on top. Any “feature” it has is not needed.15 -
I just remember this short story:
When I was about 7 or 8 (around 1994), my dad had a computer at his office with MSDOS.
There I'd type "carmen.exe" and it would start "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?" or "pool.exe" would run a 2D Pool game I don't remember the exact name.
And yet, there was a "dolphin.exe" that I always thought it was a game but I never got it running. Obviously I don't remember what was the exact issue but to this day, 20+ years later it still bugs me to know what was this "dolphin.exe" program.4 -
I use the URL box a lot to google things. This is fine, until I need to google a namespaced function, or something similar. I'll try to just google array.splice and it tries to take me to
http://www.array.splice/
I just stare at the connection error for a second, realizing that I deserve what I got. Then I add @google or JavaScript before it and proceed with my day.
The minor annoyances of being a dev.6 -
The title of this email made me click it (more so since I was offline for an entire day) but this is what I found..9
-
The other day, I customer of ours asked me to try to improve the performance of an application of his in a particular method. The method in question taking more than 5 minutes.
I took a look at what it did in the profiler, and it shocked me. More than 100k selects to the database, to retrieve 116 records...
I took a look at the code... Scores of selects in nested loops inside other nested loops inside of... That seemed normal to them...
At the end after we improved it's performance it took 3 seconds...
What shocks me the most is that the customer is a developer himself, really knowledgeable and has an order of magnitude more experience than I do. Am I too anti "worthless database round-trips"? Is that normal? :S1 -
One day, I spoke to my team which yubi or nitro key to get.
Senior (s) : but what do you need it for?
Me (m) : for encryption. And securing our password managers. Stuff, I guess.
S : encryption is not gonna be a thing. It hasn't and it won't.
M : *leaves*
I've been so baffled I couldn't cope with the situation.
A few weeks later I left the company. There were too many of such people and those products.3 -
Not a job, but an internship. It was a startup and the owner was very keenly involved with the development, to the extent that he took daily reports of what was achieved through the day, what was done, what bugs were fixed, what functionality added. Everything we did was supposed to be showed to him to justify that he wasn't wasting the (sub-par) compensation he was offering. I hated the feeling of someone breathing down my neck, judging me by the amount of code I wrote that day (I was team lead). It was all well and fine till the frontend was under development, but then we moved to backend developement. And the thing with backend is, you can't see shit. So, there really wasn't anything to point-and-show every day, except for long PHP scripts that didn't make sense to him. It came to the point that he once said "the work pace had dropped significantly and we weren't moving fast enough". This was when we were actually 5 days ahead of schedule! I literally wanted to stand up and say to him that if he wanted to get it done faster, he should look for someone else. The only thing that held me back was my University's grading system that made it compulsory for students to complete one internship for credits. Glad to be out of that craphole...3
-
So I work as a "Web Development Lead"
Which means I lead (frontend, backend and infrastructure teams)
Also I am in charge of infrastructure or devops or whatever you call it, which means I handle production issues, dev and staging environments,...etc
and I am a team of one, and today I asked for a day off because it's my wife's birthday
and suddenly everyone is blocked, everything is on fire, and the phone is not stopping ringing, I had to go out of the cinema theater to answer the non-stopping calls
I AM ASKING FOR A SINGLE DAY, A FUCKING DAY, EVEN IF SOMEONE IS BLOCKED SO WHAT IT'S NOT EVEN A DAY I ONLY NEED 6 HOURS
IS TO TOO MUCH FUCKING TO ASK4 -
Here is the first step of my software that will keep track of "what bills am I currently paying?" throughout your day. This is analysis mode, you can specify your expenses and income (after tax) in a json file and it will build this report for you.
Here's an example with relatively realistic figures
The next step is to visualize it and have it render some charts and graphs. Yay!9 -
Him: "I don't need source control, it's just another program that does unknown things on my source files. What if one day it stops working?? How do I get my files??"
Me: "you could say the same thing on 90% of the tools you use every day... Like when you restore npm packages by GUI"
him: "what are those? I don't use them"
Also him: "command line is vintage"2 -
I just had my cell phone cloned yesterday. End of the day, my phone lost signal suddenly. I thought it was a problem with my chip, so I decided to check that on a store and buy a new one next day.
Today, after I recover my chip and number, I started to see the mess. Someone used my number to send message to all my contacts on whatsapp, asking for money. Also, I had some contact info changed on the bank broker, which is really serious. I do not know what else is compromised, and I'm truly worried about it.
Someone has some good tips for improving security while using cellphones?25 -
doNotMessWithITTeamInAFuckingProject();
Last night me with my team have a discussion with my project team. Currently we have a project for our insurance client building a Learning Management System. The project condition already messed up since the first day i join a meeting. Because since its a consortium project with multiple company involved, one of company had a bad experience with another company. It happened few years back when both of company were somehow break up badly because miss communication (i heard this from one of my team).
Skip..skip... And then day to day like another stereotype IT projects when client and business analyst doing requirements gathering, the specs seems unclear and keep changing day by day even when I type this rant I'm sure it will change again.
Then something happened last night when my team leader force our business analyst to re index the use case number (imho) this is no need to be done, and i know the field conditions its so tough for all team members.
So many problems occured, actually this is a boring problem like lack of dev resource, lack of project management and all other stereotype IT projects had. Its sucks why this things is happening again.
Finally my fellow business analyst type a quite long message in our group and said that he maybe quit because its too tired and he felt that the leader only know about push push pushhhhhy fcking pussy, he never go to the client site and look what we've done and what we struggle so far.
I just don't know why, i know this guy earlier was an IT geek also, but when he leading a team he act like he never done IT project before, just know about pushing people without knowing what the context and sound to me like just rage push!
Damnit, i maybe quit also, you know we IT guy never affraid to quit anytime from the messed up condition like this. Even though we were at the bottom level in a project, but we hold the most main key for development.
Hope he (my leader) read this rant. And can realize what happened and fix this broken situation. I don't know what to say again, im in steady mode to quit anytime if something chaos happen nearly in the future.

I feel lonely on my way back to home. I am a bit depressed while listening to the song "Alone" by Alan Walker. Because I code alone all day and I am single. There is a shop in my neighbourhood. It has its light turned on this night, perhaps just to increase its exposure. But, there is something so shiny that caught my attention. It is a smiling duck. I don't know what the duck is doing right there. I havent seen it before. But the shop is closed now.
At this moment, I realize it could be my friend when I don't have a friend.4 -
That moment when you struggle and write an amazing backend logic and your manager only looks at the frontend/UI and tells you it is okay. The struggle doubles when you try and explain him the backend logic and he just ignores you...what a day!!(No offense to amazing frontend developers out there)4
-
I'm cry-laughing.
Management wanted us to deliver a completely new feature before the holidays (see my previous rant) and they were acting really sad when we told them it is impossible. It turns out they really want it to be done, and instead of realising it is not going to happen, they are coming up with brilliant new ideas on what we should do and how should we do it on a daily basis. It was just just a little nuisance until today, listening to them and reading their mails for half an hour a day is not a big deal.
So guess what? They changed the whole fucking specification today. I can't even...6 -

As a self taught, I used to break what i want to learn into pieces and watch tutorials where people use these pieces. Then I could easily do what I learned, but I could do it exactly how I learned it from the tutorials.
Until one glorious day I found a tutorial about js that doesnt teach you the "how" of things but the "why" of things.
I cant describe how easy and in depth I understand js tutorials now. It is easier even when I have to learn a new framework.
It feels like I fast-forwarded my knowledge growth overnight.
I now see my 3 weeks old code and it disgusts me.6 -
The website of the italian post service is "closed" between 23:45 and 00:15, everyday.
I don't know if something like this happens in other countries...
And do you know when I really need to access it?
ALWAYS IN THESE 30 MINUTES, not the others 1.410 of the day!
P.S.
What do you think, what could be a valid reason to "close" a web service?
I thought about backup, but other services don't have this problem.4 -
What the fuck Visual Studio? Last day my app was compiling succesfully. I DID NOT CHANGE ANY SINGLE FUCKING THING BEFORE I LEFT OFFICE. Today it refused to compile. It didn't even show the source of error, just says missing a reference.
- Clean solution, rebuild. Compile error
- Close VS re-open project. Compile error.
- Restart computer. Compile error.
- Close VS re-open project. Compile succesfully.
WHAT THE FUCK DID JUST HAPPEN? I could't believe it if it didn't happen to me. Is this shit compiling just by luck or what?5 -
Boss: "So I'm taking the next week off. In the mean time, I added some stuff for you to do on Gitlab, we'd need you to pull this Docker image, run it, setup the minimal requirement and play with it until you understand what it does."
Me: "K boss, sounds fun!" (no irony here)
First day: Unable to login to the remote repository. Also, I was given a dude's name to contact if I had troubles, the dude didn't answer his email.
2nd day: The dude aswered! Also, I realized that I couldn't reach the repository because the ISP for whom I work blocks everything within specific ports, and the url I had to reach was ":5443". Yay. However, I still can't login to the repo nor pull the image, the connection gets closed.
3rd day (today): A colleague suggested that I removed myself off the ISP's network and use my 4G or something. And it worked! Finally!! Now all I need to do is to set that token they gave me, set a first user, a first password and... get a 400 HTTP response. Fuck. FUCK. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!
These fuckers display a 401 error, while returning a 400 error in the console log!! And the errors says what? "Request failed with status code 401" YES THANK YOU, THIS IS SO HELPFUL! Like fuck yea, I know exactly how t fix this, except that I don't because y'all fuckers don't give any detail on what could be the problem!
4th day (tomorrow): I'm gonna barbecue these sons of a bitch
(bottom note: the dude that answered is actually really cool, I won't barbecue him)5 -
"Get a job doing what you love, you'll never work a day in your life" they said
What they didn't tell us is that it would lead us to babysitting/troubleshooting continuous deployments at 3 am on a Sunday with a black Irish coffee and a manic look on our faces5 -
My friend is a 1st time programmer. When we learned about tabs vs spaces in our mandatory beginners c++ class, the friend said "what, you can use spaces?" and I said "yes, of course, like this!" and demonstrated it. The friends reply, without knowing about the controversy, made my day:
*silence*

Update:
The wasp is still alive.
I walked in today to find the damn buzzy mother-earth-fucker on the window. It doesn't have much energy now, and I didn't let it out because mofo got the chance a million times over to just leave me the fuck alone. So I just let it be. no idea where in the lab it is hidden now, and the robots will watch him all night, every night.
And you know what, I'm not gonna open the damn window for it ever again.
(Sat in my hoodie, wrapped, the whole day and was paranoid about it flying and sitting on me, but the war is on. He won't get out of this lab alive. )16 -
F-ck working in a multi-billion dollar global company!!!
There are soooooo many clowns in this corp. Just f-ing hiding. F-ing PowerPoint-cowboys using big words. Do they even know… you know, how to code? What it means?
I mean, we need several. Of course. But sooooo many roles leads to an incredible amount of meetings with almost zero value. Since noone seems to know what the hell they are talking about…
There are so many…
*sigh*
The other week I attended a ”very-important-clown-architect-multi-site-holistic-fucking-alignment-future-roadmap” meeting. I fucking flew to a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COUNTRY just to waste an entire day with these clowns. What is this? WHAT IS IT!?
*sigh*10 -
I just LMFAO(ed..?) at myself so hard.....
Messing around with all the option in the Android Emulator's "Extended Controls" window, and I was playing with the battery level slider.. got a little carried away, and suddenly my emulator just shut down.. by itself!
🤔
It took me way longer than it should've to realise what happened. But yeah, that's what Android does when your fucking battery reports 0%.
🤣🤣🤣🤦
I think I must stop working now, this day is done with me.2 -
Another day, another client story.
So today the client is sending me the text for the website, and after 15(!!!) iterations, add a period, center the text, justify the text, center it again etc.
Me: Can you please create a word document, design it as you like, and I will copy that to HTML for you?
Him: But if I do all the work what am I paying you for?
Me: To listen to you ...3 -
There was a computer programming teacher in my 1st semester who taught C. He used to have this conventional way of teaching C like other Engineering subjects which was going to more theories before writing actual codes.
These are the conversations with him.
(First day, a guy asks him some questions.)
Guy: Sir, why do we need to learn C? There are other languages used extensively for other tasks like python, etc. Why bother with this boring C?
Teacher: C is used to learn other languages. After learning C, you can easily learn other languages.
Guy: Sir, where is C's application? Where is it used?
Teacher: It is used in academics to lay foundation for students to learn other languages which are used to build softwares.
(Fucking Hilarious)
(A month after he was asking some questions to students.)
Teacher: What is an array? What is an array-name?
Student 1: Array, is this collection of data that can be stored in a single type.
Teacher: Then what is an array-name?
Student 1: I don't know.
Teacher: (angrily) Array-name is a definition itself.
(We were supposed to answer that. It was a standard definition.)15 -
So here is what happens. I have new guy in the office. He thinks he is a big shot or something. Our office time is 9 to 6, but no one comes in at that time.
This guy, he comes at 10:30 and I come at 11. I have been working as a senior dev for 2.5 years now and he is a fresher who joined as a manager which I am still wondering why.
And he tells me you are late and I inform the CEO about this.
One of these days I will tell him that brother the day you show the same commitment I have shown to the company or anything close to it, we will talk.
Waiting for the exact day.5 -
Dashing through the snow
Get the fuck out of my way
You are all so slow

I'll end your caroling
but It won't be a silent night
I've come to terrorize your town
and watch you die tonight
Jingle Bells
Go to hell
I've hijacked Santa's sleigh
Oh what fun it is to ride over bodies every day
HEY !!
Jingle Bells
Go to hell
Bodies will decay
after you're all crushed beneath my motherfucking sleigh

Kevlin Henney said it best. Old is the new new. Tech goes in cycles. Lambda functions aren't new, they've been around since the 70's. Microservices aren't new. Linux is built out of small applications that do one thing, and do it well.
So what can you do that is "new"? Different. Learn a new domain. You're front end? Do back end. You're back end? Do some DB. You're full stack? Do some ML.
At the same time, finding the time to do those things is hard. I barely manage to do my job with other stuff going on.
You can also try to be better at what you do day to day. Find someone that's better than you. If you're the best in your team, maybe see if anyone needs teaching.

A few days ago, in my windows machine, I was looking at the Task manager's processes. I was like, "I don't need Cortana. It is using so much RAM already. Why not delete it?"
So, I used "Iobit Unlocker" to force delete Cortana & everything seemed okay. But after 1 day, creating new folder option is gone. Now I have to use CMD and MKDIR to create new folders.
The start menu search is also gone (I guess, That's what Cortana was for).
My context menu became buggy. Some menus show sometimes, sometimes don't. "Open with VS code" option is also gone sometimes.
I don't know what will happen next.
Keep my "Windows machine" in your prayer :/20 -
Scrum is terrible. Is there another agile technique that isn't as bad? Like maybe one that will let us do our "scrum" once a week for like an hour? My current project really doesn't lend itself to once a day scrums. Literally my scrum input is "I worked on what I have been working on, and I'm gonna work on it more today. Impediments are literally the same as they always are because my life is no longer my own."5

What is wrong with people. I put in hours of my time every day and it hurts to see some annonymous person complaining shit about something that doesn't even exist.

I just got trolled by Amazon.
LOL and FML.
Be me, super busy with tons of things to do trying to prioritize tasks and jiggle jaggle from one thing to another.
Then i get a call from an Amazon representative, which I know:
Her: You should join the AWS Founders Club, you will get a lot of benefits.
Me: I don't really want to, I already looked into it and the process is long.
Her: You should do it, you got what it takes. Just register through this link..
Me: O.k.
1 day later
AMAZON: Unfortunately, we have to inform you that at this time we aren't able to accept your application. Though your startup story is impressive, your startup isn't at the right place in its journey to benefit from what the AWS Founders Club can offer.
WHAT A FUCKING WASTE OF TIME!
I didn't even want to join in the first place!!! What is this next level of trolling?!5 -
My story about ego boost was when client came one day that they want some system that was prommised to him but guy who promissed him it forgotten about it.
Well, i quickly estimated things in head (i wasnt on meeting, was next to this room so i heared whats up), i pulled out my boss from meeting ("hey i need you urgently for sth") told him that i can make proof of concept to show him for next day (it was +-15) and sure enough, next day 10:00 first version that worked but was kindda rough around edges and with TON of technical debt was created. Than I told client that I just need a little bit more time to work on this as he can see it is here, it works, and it does what he needs, but it would be good to add some polish to it.
He bought my version and i saved company a client, that was lost becose some moron forgotten about him hah
Oh, yes, i got all i needed in return, day off and some extra $$ -
Spent an entire day just compiling a kernel with audio codecs for my cherrytrail laptop, first on my server for 9ish hours, then on my laptop, ended up deleting it all and starting over, because the final folder was 20+ gigs big (without modules) and the next instruction was to transfer all those files to what is a 32gb laptop, so I thought I fucked up, now searching more, it seems I just need the vmlinuz file once it compiled, I guess I'll compile it all again...13

Please tell me something wrong with me, and whole world is working like that! It can't be right! Or could it, and I'm just one sad fuck who don't know shit?
So... We've got:
1. Jira reporting (agile style with cards and shit)
2. Task timers (via application integrated to Jira in order to count how much time we spent on a task)
3. End of the day email reporting with description of what we have done today (Jira is not enough?)
4. Daily morning meetings with a team leader to report what we're gonna do today
5. Git merge code reviews for each finished component (that lasts for hours)
6. Weekly status meetings
7. Working hours reporting with a fucking fingerprint
And on top of all of that, the developer is the one who just writes the code - team leader decides how this code is gonna look, what will be written first and what last, what libraries will be used and so on...8 -
Good day/night to all.
This is my first post and I don't really know what to say so I'll keep it short...
I've been reading rants for a while now, really like the community and want to say thanks to @trogus and @dfox for creating this. :-)13 -
I was helping a client launch a new website. We met in a restaurant to do the final launch work. I mentioned I use VPN software to protect my computer on public WiFI and taught him what it means. He said it sounds hackerish and untrustworthy and I had a hard time explaining how it’s actually a countermeasure to hackers.
The next day he calls and says his cell phone is acting up and wants to know what my VPN software might have done to cause that.

Context:
Me, Front-end Developer, Javascript stuff
---
Junior Dev: Hey xxzer0, could you help me with this? I spent the entire day on it and at this point, I think I just broke Chrome.
xxzer0: *---* Okay, let me see.
Junior Dev: Do you see it? I am updating the Javascript code but it's not working at all. The browser is not even loading it... Literally, the code I just wrote is not there.
**
Now be me, be the fucking idiot I was and I have been my whole life, I already knew what was going on because I lost a fucking day on it as this guy.
**
xxzer0: Well, let me see just one thing...
'Open Chrome Dev Tools' -> 'Network' -> 'Disable Cache'.
xxzer0: Now try again...
Junior Dev: What are you..doi........ IT'S WORKING! O.O
Chrome, I love you but sometimes I wish you could make this more "accessible" to newcomers.5 -
My day:
9 am: crack knuckles, ready to start day
9:01 am: oh, that PR I sent last week hasn't been reviewed yet and I need it in mainline. Better merge latest and get someone to look over it.
9:02 am: now the test suite is broken, better fix that up before getting it reviewed.
1 pm: phew, that was a slog. Now to get on with today actual programming
1:01 pm: "hey buddy, you coming to that tech leads strategy meeting?"
5 pm: Jesus what a meeting. Now maybe I can get a little code written. I'll just fast-forward to latest...
5:01 pm: WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERES A BAD MIGRATION AND EVERYONE SHOULD AVOID USING THE LATEST VERSION WHY DIDN'T YOU REVERT THAT SHIT DO I NEED TO COME OVER THERE AND RESTRICT YOUR STUPID WINDPIPE UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND GIT *RAGE TABLEFLIP*2 -
I think I have been having too much fun in meetings.
We started one meeting:
Boss: Isn't today a great day?
<Boss looks at me>
Me: I will wait until the end of the meeting to decide.
Meeting takes place. Boss is upset about things in other areas that are not panning out properly. He is not happy by the end of the meeting.
<Boss looks at me>
Boss: You are right, today is not a great day.
<everyone laughs>
Another meeting:
Boss: How is everyone doing? Is everyone having great job satisfaction and challenging work? (Not exact words, but the general meaning of them.)
<Boss looks at me>
Me: I just rearrange text all day.
<Boss laughs>
I figure if he is laughing it is generally a positive experience. I am serious when he asks what I am doing in my work. -
So I walked into a business the other day where they make flyers and business cards etc. Wanted something specific so went to what they call their "developers". So they have some kind of dodgy pdf editor open there and I know exactly what I want so I asked can you take a RGB color..... the reaction was glassy eyes. And after that the woman started to scream at me and telling me that I have no idea what it is like to be a "Developer". Ended up walking out and going to another place.....1

Another day, another time exporting svgs from Figma, sizing them, and exporting them to png into our app as the developer.
But no, I get it, what designers do is extremely taxing on the brain and any additional steps must be excruciating! Let me do anything that requires even the lowest of double-digit IQ! After all, I'm your local resident full stack clown™️!

Every day when I am going to and from work I listen to a podcast called Developer Tea. I can really recommend it, it talks about everything that is devrelated. Not only about technical stuff but also about how you should be as a person as a developer. I shared mine so now I am curious to hear: what is the best podcast/podcasts you listen to?15

How my day went.
Project Manager: We need deliverable X.
Me: That's not listed.
PM: But we need it. Other PM says what you provided isn't enough.
Me: Too bad. I was not told to deliver it.
PM2: We need deliverable X.
Me: Look at the requirements. It is not there. I'm not providing it.
PM2: We need it. Let me ask PM3.
PM3: We need deliverable X.
Me: No. It's not listed. And here's why it's not even applicable.
PM3: Oh....ok4 -
My friend who works in marketing told me the other day that he would like enter IT world to earn more. I have told him that company had opened position for junior SEO/SEM which in theory is very close to what he is doing right now. His base salary would double and there are bonuses and commissions. I have told him that I could get him that job, but what I heard back? "Nah I don't to want to do that" and started whining again about his salary...2

My first rant! let's see what is about!
Greetings from Venezuela, the oil and corruption country of South America...
Is it possible to become a good software developer just being constant, every day trying, even when you don't know what you're doing but, keep it up till you accomplish a goal? Or is anything more needed to succeed? I mean I'm trying to make my first desktop app and sometimes I feel like fck! I'm leaving this... I'm trying to dominate the software development process to get better a better job, in here or out there... But geez its hard...
Well, I want to believe that maybe someday I will become a good software developer...
First rant without thinking too much...10 -
I brought my laptop and stuff to school the other day, it was my final period before school was over and it was more "do what you want" kind of thing. So I was playing with my terminal (since I have Linux) and one of the students came up to me and asked "What are you playing? Is that a game?", luckily I wasn't in that pissy mood so I just tried my best to explain to him what I was doing.6

fuck time zones and time changes, why the fuck we don’t have one time on the planet and one date that is just day.
No month, no years - all the complexity would be gone, day wouldn’t have 24 hours but it would be something more precise, there won’t be a second
time that earth goes around sun is
365,25964 days
31558432896 milliseconds
we should start count time differently so it’s not relative in space time continuum, what should be relative is the mass38 -

No really, What's new in the world on this windy, cold, miserable, wait what day is it again? Oh Wednesday, I seriously had to look that up.

So fucking tired of priority shifting. How the hell is anyone supposed to get shit done with 500 fucking meetings and between each one you're told do something different?
This is critical you must do it now! No this!
My response, fuck you I'm going home my head hurts let me know what you'd like me to code and when you've decided add a day for annoying me.2 -
My university has a internal developed system, where everything is managed from e-mails, exams to personal data.
What I'd like most about it, they talk all day about Internet Security and store our passwords in plain text and if you press the "I've forgott my Password button", they even send your password unencrypted, plaintext via e-mail. (Hello Wiresharks)
I don't know how to feel about this, it just hurts :(1 -
Wasn't even going to do this but here it is.
Meeting to start every single day. Every day I have said what is assigned is not possible in any way. Nobody listens or cares.
Fast forward a week, my team is deadlocked with an issue that cannot be fixed. Morning meeting kicks off, topic gets brought up by me and the immediate response is, "Why have you or anyone else been looking into that? We've known for weeks that is an issue." -
Oh so day continued....
My boss just asked me before I left... You know that report we wanted automated, you said you'd get it done by today, is it done yet?
Me: well uh who dragged me into a PROD issue because no one else knows how to investigate... EVEN THOUGH I BUILT AND SHOWED U HOW TO USE THEM... SEVERAL TIMES. (no i didn't say this last but that's what went on in my head).
Oh and I figured out what the issue was... -
Will Always Remember my good friends
time is the only asset that has no price and that is something that we all have.
time is worth more than anything and anyone, even money. once time is wasted, it can never be bought again.
and guess what
the only thing that has no price, is the thing that is given to our lives for free.
each day you are deposited 86400 seconds for free.

First day of web server programming class. The teacher clearly doesn't know anything. He doesn't even know what the course is about! When someone asks him what it is, he mumbles about "dynamic" something... Then he says we will be using the languages JavaScript, MVC, and PHP. What the fuck. MVC? LANGUAGE?
He then tries to come up with some project we could make, and is not going to teach anything apparently. Keep in mind, most people in this class have very little previous experience with programming.
After not saying anything for a long time, he finally tells us to make a clock in JavaScript. A CLOCK. He is supposed to teach how to make Web APIs and such, but instead, he tells us to make a clock in JavaScript, and that's it.
What. The. Fuck.10 -
What follows is an email I want to send very badly right now:
RE: please provide new date format
There is no new date format. You have the day and month switched. In the sample you've provided.
You've been getting away with it up til now because the digits were small enough to be either a month or day.
Then, as soon as you hit a snag you immediately gave up and assumed it was me changing things. You came to me before even making a guess what could be wrong.
Learn to fucking troubleshoot PLEASE. I am sick of your lazy shit coming to me with an issue every time you stub your toe. You are professional developers and I am your junior.3 -
Just wondering, fellow devRanters...
Q: What is your favorite programming language, and why?
I'm currently studying Unity, so I'm in love with C#, it helped me understand a lot of concepts like namespaces, encapsulation, constructors, something that I was struggling to grasp with PHP, which I use every single day at work.13 -
Those of you who run Linux *exclusively*... What are you doing in the OS that makes it a big deal for you?
Personally, I spend the bulk of my time in *apps*---editor, IDE, browser, messaging, calendar, etc. OK, a little time in command line, but minutes a day, if I add it up. And I can get Bash anywhere.
Now, you could argue that, if I spend most of my time in apps, then I should have a minimalist OS. Fair comment. Is that all it is?
But, I feel OS is quite an unimportant part of my day. App launcher for much of it.15 -
I'm the only one who after saying "nah, come on, I will backup it tomorrow, what could happen?", spends the day after by reinstalling Windows (after an awesome crash) and praying that the project he was working on for months is still there?1
-
I'm debugging a script...
It takes 1+ minute to start because it loads data from remote API and apparently loading 80k objects takes a lot of time, even though I need only headers
I could optimize it. Like, add a local cache. But I will not.
Instead I will waste 1 minute, then another minute, then another minute, each time hoping it's the last pass, but no. I will waste the whole day on it and at the end of the day I will still NOT have the slightest idea why it is slow. That is what will happen, I predict it.
Good times3 -
So trello is down. I need to see my tasks so I know what to work on...
Now, I just reload trellos page every 2 minutes... Bored...
Earlier today it was my bank that was down.
Good day.3 -
Making calls, meetings, and "brainstorming" half-baked features or designs or any other slop bullshit for 12 hours a day?
Wow, you are an impressive "startup bro"!!!
Coding, testing, running emulators, tests, reading technical documentation, ensuring product success in the real world, and implementing efficient full stack software for 12 hours a day?
Fuck you!!!
These are the expectations of management. Just remember, what they do is "extremely difficult", but you are simply just a resource queue that takes input and converts it to real-world implementation.
Give me a fucking break -
Code review day 1:
Me: Where are these three templates being used? I don't see any class that uses them.
Him: Oh, yeah. My bad. I'll remove them.
(Time passes)
Him: I don't know what's going on with my branch. Please ignore the PR for now.
(Time passes)
Him: Is there any way for me to get the files from staging. I don't know what I did to my branch.
Me: Hang on. I'll push a copy of the one I have in a new branch.
He declines his PR and stops by to say he's going home but he'll open a new PR tomorrow and remove the unused files.
Code review day 2:
Him: Hey, do you know what happened to my PR? It looks like it disappeared.
Me: You declined it yesterday. Said you'd make a new one today without those extra files.
Him: Ooooh!1 -
Why is it ok for a girl to live off her husbands salary and not vica versa? Like fuck it ill do the dishes and play games all day and to hell with my 9 to 6 job. Starting to seem the only way i’d be able to code what i want not what im asked too 🤷🏻♂️8
-
Worst: Getting struck with Corona when moving to a European country via job, everything went shit, visa late, starting job is late and never certain, for 8 months I was in limbo.
Best: Finally got job and moved, been playing video games all day because it is government job and no way to check what I am doing. Fuck it, I dont like software development as my salary job, just as hobby.
Bye, have to play game.6 -
"Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life" is probably the truest statement, but there's a lot of people who get the definition muddled.
They think "Oh well that means there wont ever be hard days and there'll never be times where I'll struggle or get frustrated, and it means I'll go home at the end of the day feeling refreshed and ready to do it forever ad infinitum"
There absolutely will be days where you're fuckin done with semicolons or that you've had it with other devs, but the saying doesnt mean any of that. What it means is that while you may dislike the corporate environment or the fact that you dont really care for it after work hours, while you're doing your tasks in their purest form, you're not really feeling all too bad.
I know a lot of people have gripes with this statement. Pull your finger out of your ass and admit that either you don't love it anymore or that you didn't really understand exactly what it was you were loving all that much in the first place.2 -
I'm going to attend a free 4-day course about Flutter at my University starting next week, never really got into mobile dev before but since it's free it may be interesting.
What do you think about Flutter, is it worth learning it?2 -
There should be one day a year when random spam emails become true when you click on them.
It should be random for everyone so you never know what day it is and also happen instantly when you click on message.
World would be full of millionaires, guys with enormous penises. Everyone will eat food all the time cause you can lose all of your unnecessary weight with single click and whole internet will flood with spam emails.
Instead of scrolling trough news and social networks people would click on spam emails waiting for the day their spam will be fulfilled.
Economy would eventually collapse and most of us would be no different than monkey in some crazy experiment waiting for it’s banana.
It can be called fulfilled spam message paradox.
It would be funny alternative reality.3 -
Please don't mutter your ideas on calls or trail it off mid sentence to mouse level's of sound 🐁.
It's so awkward having to ask what you've said every few moments.
*Especially* if we work together all day all week
N.B. speakers on max volume + auto-captions are already on so I can piece together what you said.
Conversations are so difficult otherwise
That is all3 -

How does everyone stop themselves getting headaches from staring at a screen everyday, all day? Migraines run in my family, so when I get a headache it's always a migraine. When I get one it stops me dead. I'm unable to do anything until it goes away. My best cure right now is excederin. It works great but I want to see what you guys have to say.13 -
After about 7 hours continuous work in any one day, I’ve kinda had enough and noticed that work beyond this point is usually shit. I stopped trying and think fuck it now. Deadlines are mainly bollocks anyway. My life is a lot better because of it. Don’t do today what you can put off til tomorrow.Who’s with me?6

Creating a stripped down version of a product is a big red flag to me (e.g. "easy/light mode").
It means the main product is too complicated; it handles too many things. Instead, shift the focus back to the core of the product by removing features.
In the our day-to-day it is completely normal to stumble upon things that used to work but now have been changed: they have been deprecated.
Deprecating and removing features should be added to any product iteration. Thus being "normal" and a common occurrence in any changelog; just like features and bug fixes.
This gives non-tech product owners "permission" to remove bloat. Devs stop whining about "the big rewrite". And end-users don't suddenly have to learn yet another tool with "basic" features missing.
I think the best example is google (https://killedbygoogle.com/) and the worst is the amazon shopping website (what a mess!).3 -
What is it with the rising trend of password fields allowing you to see your password, and (worse than that) often having it as unmasked by default?!
Who woke up one day and said "Damn, you know what would be a great idea? Unmasking the password field, so everyone can see it! Why didn't we think of that before?!"
Dahh.7 -
Halloween reminds me of when I started my first tech job. It was a week before Halloween. I arrive for my first day. The front door that’s normally locked is wide open. It’s quiet. There’s caution tape everywhere. I think, “oh no, what happened?!” I debate whether I go inside or go to the lobby and ask security if they’re aware of a possible crime scene upstairs. I cautiously step inside and…everything is business as usual. It was all part of their Halloween decorations. I can laugh about it now, but I had quite a scare. 🎃

Today I learned that some external devs one of our projects is working with have DB tables where they store references to specific dates, and not only that, but every minute of those dates, and the day of the week, and what season its in. Im not joking.
Hmm should I use the local datetime libs or should I go through a firewall, load balancer and DB cluster just to find out what day it is? -
When a vendor tells you you can't do certain things on their API because their database is not optimized, and then drops the bomb that doing a certain action that, when it happens to overlap with a completely different client doing the same action, causes their system to go down, you know it's a Tuesday that feels like it should be a Friday...

Does anyone know what the **day-to-day** differences are between working in IT (banks, hedge funds) vs tech (Google, Facebook, Netflix).
In my mind, I see Hell and Heaven. And there's a giant wall in between called "technical interviews + algorithms and data structures".
I'm on the Hell side... And not sure if I should climb the wall 😔
Is the wall even that big?8 -
After 2 weeks I really like it here on devrant... And its mostly because we all somewhat face the same shit together today, every day. And still we continue.
That is what dev is all about 😃1 -
Consecutive day number 3 of "What random dumb shit is Xcode going to pull on me today?"
today it doesn't like the ".storyboard" extension name that it created itself automatically. So that's my fault again I suppose?5 -
I was watching some learning materials from Microsoft the other day and during the course the lecturer said :
"Let me quickly Bing it". At first I was WAT? what the heck is bing, but then he opened the IE and searched for something in Microsoft Bing.9 -
Okay so this is my first desk job. I'm experiencing some personal issues and wondering if they are normal, what you do to combat them, etc.
First of all, some days, I literally almost fall asleep on the job. Caffeine doesn't work much. I know it's just my sleep schedule but what should I do in this situation? What if I actually do fall asleep?
Secondly, I'm finding that my productivity only exists in bursts. I'll do three hours of work in 10 minutes, and then 10 minutes of work in three hours. I can't just catch a stride. How do I become more consistently productive? Should I be more consistent?
My legs hurt. Sitting all day is not for me. I guess this is more situation to situation, and I do walk almost 6k steps a day on my breaks, but it really doesn't feel great most of the day.9 -
So my dad calls me because my uncle is freaking out about how a client messaged him and he doesn't know how to check if he can do what them asked him to. I tour them around the website he's using (as he understands little to none of it, and my dad doesn't use the site regularly so he's not versed into it as well) as to where they're supposed to look and they go check this one tab. In it, there's info of what is sold out in what day. And for each day it says "day x - y sold out" and he asks me what day it is that y things are sold out, and that it is confusing, and I'm like "are you serious it's right there". Goddamn it this guy sometimes
-
It works locally, it works in Dev, it works in Test, but fails to deploy in UAT. Is it a data issue? I don't know, I don't have permissions to see the UAT database. Literally all I know is that this API is returning 500 instead of what it's supposed to return, but only sometimes.
Guess I'll sit here all day and try to solve the problem telepathically as there is literally no way of troubleshooting other than scrolling through the code and hoping that a cartoon lightbulb appears above my head.2 -
So I have this Boss, he is actually good. But he micro manage everything. He writes the code that supposedly we should write. He just want us to turnover what he write. And he just want us to understand it.
So at the end of the day. We didn't learn something.2 -
I met my crush last day, she is a junior from the same college, everything was fine until when she wanted to find a recharge shop to recharge her phone. I opened PayTm(One of the Mobile Wallet here in India) and said I'm doing it.
Her reaction : What ? How ? You can do recharge right away from your phone ! wow !
I lost my interest on her :(
She is BTech Final Year Student

Wish me luck. Looks like the feature I am developing is going to be late because QA doesn't feel like following the estimates we agreed on. We already identified that development was going to be the longest part of this whole effort and that QA was going to be relatively easy, but but no. Because this is the day we have to be "code complete", they don't want to test a relatively simple feature. In fact we had to talk them into even starting testing on it today. Even though regression day is Monday and they are basically going to be done testing their last ticket this morning. Like what the fuck were they going to do for the next 7-8 hours? They don't write any documentation. There are no reports to do. There are no meetings. Did they just want a virtual day off?
Edit: they are literally playing with people's careers here. This is not the first time I have had something delayed by QA even though they agreed that it was simple to test and it was delivered with enough time to fucking test. Then I get in trouble because of late delivery.6 -
First day in the office for the year. First thing i do is connect through a vpn while inside a vdi. Fuck me! Since it changed my IP, now i can't access the damn vdi. Can't even restart it! What a way to start the year.

So I finally decided to switch to Linux.
And I need help choosing distro.
I know this is not a good place to ask this, I could just use google. But I want to hear it from you guys, from actual devs whose work with it every day, and not from some ***** bloggers whose barely know what is OS.
So please just write which distro you are using and if you are happy with it. I will be very thankful.36 -
I like our daily stand-ups, but our team only does it when our scrum master is present, if he takes a day off, no one cares about it
I think it's healthy for scrum teams to have that every day
What do you guys think? Are you also doing scrum? How bug is your team?6 -
Why the fuck is the master almost constantly broken? And not even "some feature I'm working on doesn't work"-broken but "can't build this shit"-broken. What the fuck is the workflow here that it's apparently acceptable? I wasn't able to do SHIT today because of it. Almost whole fucking day wasted.3

FUCK YOU TECH LEAD! Our manager explained what he wanted 4 MONTHS AGO! You said we could do it! We can do it! I sit on toilet to take a shit and i started falling asleep! I shit even while i sleep! This is magnificent. Miraculous. Every day its the same shit but more advanced style of shitting. I am becoming very skilled at shitting. I deserve to get fucking paid every time i take a shit. There should be a sport about who can shit more often every day and I'd be the winner. Bullshit floats all around us every day especially from jobs and interviews. It is inevitable to avoid it. Beautiful. And it does make sense. I keep saying life is shit anyways every time some shit happens. And im always right -- life IS shit anyways. The keyword is **anyways**. Because no matter what you do or dont do, life will be shit Anyways. Life is empty and meaningless. Even shit has more meaning than life itself. If meaning is something that is made up then you can't live life at all. If meaning is what you make it then there is no default meaning in the entire existence. All of it is shit. We either exist because God made us and doesnt want to tell us why or we exist by chance of statistical randomness. Hopefully its the first option as its less depressing
Btw terraform is fucking good7 -
Kind of awkward for me.
Tomorrow is my last day at my current job and my department is starting to work full time remote tomorrow.
I start my new job this next Monday, and they went full remote yesterday. As of now they're shipping my laptop my way, but they cancelled new hire orientation on Monday and moved it to the following week. I haven't heard about what is expected for Monday yet, guess I'll know soon!3 -
Spending the day sending emails back and forth with your client because they can't be bothered to prepare a single overview of what properties the endpoint expects, and instead expect you to piece it together from 6 PDFs of which at least 2 contain contradicting information, another is outdated, and the last one seems to have been exported from word and is missing half the content.
Fun times! -
First rant here..
So earlier this week, on a php Laravel project, I created a set of nice new features.
The code is tested, locally all fine, I push to Github, circleCi kicks in and double checks myself, still everything green. (Just for a not, its a private project so only I work on it.)
I go ahead and merge, deploy to staging and continue on my next ticket, which is a very small one.
I call it the day, next day I pick back up where I left, test locally, all green, push... then circleCi says no.
I spend 2 days debugging, trying to figure out what is wrong without advance. I just push develop branch again, guess what also failing.
I leave it for the day as I already spend enough time on it.
This morning, I simply do a composer update, push and everything miraculously starts working.. even if there were no changes in the working branches.
Im so mad right now, and this is going in my "try this before you debug a ci" book..2 -
Last week someone from a clients IT mailed me saying some user needed setting up in the software we develop. There was a flurry of emails from the person, the persons boss, their IT, etc. I sent instructions to the IT person explaining how to create users. Next day another flurry of emails asking if I created the user or not. Seems like they cant follow instructions so I went in and created the user for them then didn't think anything more of it.
Then last night I binged watched many episodes of this TV series 12 monkeys which is all about time traveling. Anyway in this morning I get into the office and there are all these emails from this same person, from last week, also emails from their boss and their IT people again all asking how this same person can be set up as a user. I had to quietly just ask one of the other developers "what day is it?" just in case..1 -
What is it with this bullshit culture about installing something syncs it with all machines
First chrome/chromium, You can't install a plugin or extension on 1 machine unless you're logged out. what is this bullshit
Next windows 10, I fucking installed a Japanese language pack on 1 machine, by the end of the day all my fucking machines and even my windows tablet got it installed and applied in a fucking bugged way that made it that my UI is English and my fucking metro apps are Japanese.
This is starting to get annoying as fuck5 -
Man I am sick and tired of developers (I was about to put that in quotes, but it's mean), acting "cool" all the time. Like let me just put it out there, WTF is dAy iN tHE LiFE oF A sOftWaRe deVELoper.
Get the fuck out here. All you do is eat, walk, eat, chat, laugh and fuck around all day, with no work being done. And I'm supposed to respect you. Educate these young and fresh developers on what it is really like, rather than teasing them with the ideal life they think it is.10 -
If you're a PO; Please don't make the sprint review take almost 2 hours. Put it in text, make tickets, make roadmap and show it me that way. I've forgotten 90% of the meeting by the time I speak to you in the next daily.
I hate meetings. Waste of fucking time, especially when all you do is listen to what the PO wants for 1 hour and then both sides forget it the next day.
Use-fucking-less.1 -
Recently I've come to notice that I keep using my gut feeling every day in perf investigations [and it pans out]. Until now I used to think that "gut feeling" in IT and everywhere else is a synonim for "guessing". Turns out it's not at all that simple.
Damn, that's exciting! Love that spidey-sensey-feeling!! I hope it means I'm getting quite good at what I do.2 -
This is what I did today in 5 hours and 45 minutes. Documentation and optimized code inside. One method was kinda tricky but I managed to optimize it from 1,88s in the first lazy version to 35ms in the end. Now that's what I call a productive day1

Spent another half day learning ELK and how to programatically query and run aggregations against the data that's now collected.
So I can feed it into a testing framework for releases.
I sorta feel like I'm dragging everyone else into the light...
Like "you see what you've been missing all these years? This is how it's supposed to be these days..."
Data data data... Useful data.... This is what you can do when have structured and searchable logs rather then huge messy text files ...6 -
So, at the very day I've been expelled, the university cancelled my MSDNAA account as if they thought they would punish me. (They got Office, Windows and everything Microsoft for students for free there)
It's sad but half of the students have no idea what MSDNAA is and how to use it. Then there is the other half who would still feel like they've been stolen from even if they got a MS product for free.
And then there is me. Because of math which is significantly impossible, I've been expelled. Fuck.4 -
In all seriousness, the best part of being a dev is that you learn something new every day. That serves me personally as motivation. There are so many fields of study that embody what a dev is, and because of this, there are a LOT of things that you can do and create. On the other hand, the worst part of being a dev is the fact that we can't do it forever.

Programming excel macros is the worst thing one could do to himself. VBA is the most cancerous anderen inconsistent language I had the "pleasure" to work with. I have problems like the following all the time for no apparent reason. For example: you script something, test is and everything is working just fine and dandy. Next day when you run the script, guess what...i doesnt work anymore. For no apparent reason what so ever. Maybe its just me, but i just want to hang myself working with it.
Anyone else has had such "Love story" like mine?6 -
Is it normal to be frustrated when you can't solve the bug for a day and all you can do is update on what you've tried solutions?
3 months in this company2 -
One coffee down and my eyes are just glazing over my code and wondering... right... what is it I gotta do now ... ? What day is it ... Where am I ...3
-
So what do you call it when you get bombarded by emails saying your servers are at 100% CPU, but once you fire up the monitoring tools everything is back to normal?
FUCK YOU AMAZON IT'S MY DAY OFF.3 -
Somewhere half of the project, after just placing a new version on staging I get an email from the customer:
" This is really going the wrom way! Everything is so big, and what happened to the original design? The one I agreed to! I really dont like this, please go back to the way it was!!!"
I replied asking him what exactly wasnt as the original design (We really followed the prototype we had showed him earlier)
So the next day I get this email:
"Whoops, turns out I was still zoomed at 150%. I guess it was a bit of an overreaction.."
Couldnt believe this :')1 -
I have an alias on my machine called les which is for when I mistype less, it emails my friend les with the contents of the file and says 'next time I see you, tell me what this said'.
He gets a few emails a day. -
This articles are what is wrong with developers. They build these stereotypes for us.

If it was funny article, just for fun I get it. Er all laugh. But this writer seems pretty serious in this.
I've been working for 3-4 years as developer. I still use Google every day. Does that make me a bad developer ? No.
Yhese are new things every day that we learn. It is yech world. It changes every day.2 -
JavaScript libs have a massive problem with quality and especially with quality of documentation and error reporting
For the entire day I've been staring at this stupid error and can't figure it out. The documentation stating that the source function sets the source dir, but not actual saying what 'source dir' means or what paths are resolved against it is no help either
npm is actually really awesome but almost every library I've tried just fucking sucks3 -
Anyone know what Safe Agile is?
We're doing project interval planning for next 2 days.... aka long meetings about good knows what...
To me it sounds like bullshit bureaucracy.... because you can't have Safe anything with a team full of monkeys...
That or I just don't like change and giving up control... Or sitting I didn't meetings all day... Especially since I'm deaf and the captions suck...20 -
just as Erik Meijer said scrum is the most stupid shit in modern development process. I worked in an organization hires ppl as full time scrum master, which is joke. each day the asks what did u finished yesterday and how long it need to finish the task assigned to u. btw the scrum masters know nothing about programming. come on man how can u finish any serious shit in one day and who cares how much shit others finished. each week just attending those freaking meetings without coding. each programmer are assigned at least 5 bosses, and what the fuck is product manager doing, it's not adding indirection can solve anything.2

When companies don't understand what DevOps is and don't know how to implement it.
I hate when the term DevOps gets slapped onto a traditional Ops or sys admin team and they call it a day.
It's become the new agile.3 -
HELL YEAH! First day into the vacation and after checking the mails, I see that I have a new job offer from a company I have applied for. It is not the company with the highest priority on my list, but it is still cool to have them inviting me for a talk that fast.
Btw. I have a question to the experienced job switchers among us (I do not mean job switchers in a bad way).
What do you guys set your priorities on when it comes to joining a company? Do you have any tips for people who want to join a company in a general view? What NO-GOs can you give to us? Thanks.2 -
Excel rant.
I know excel is not a programming language, but it is what I deal with everyday.
My immediate boss is Japanese(Japanese company).
Our boss will occasionally add to the shared spreadsheet without telling us. We find out the next day by discovering that other sheets that reference to it are waaaay off. Or the big one is the mass amount of #ref all over the sheet.
I mean come on man, at least look around the large sheet first!5 -
Twitter will one day, turn me into a racist I swear.
Idk what it is about this app, It gave me a whiff of what it's like hating a certain group of people (not gonna mention which group).
And the weird thing is, Twitter content isn't anything worse than what I see regularly on 9GAG and Reddit. Not even close.
What sorcery does this app have? I might need to stay tf away from this app wtf.19 -
Ok.. this is what happens every day..
Isn't it?

Bugs.push(bug,bug,bug,bug,bug)

So for Father's Day I bought my dad premium coffee (Single Origin, Now Bottle Voyager pack). Very expensive even compared to Starbucks...
We brewed a few but they taste like crap. I thought he was doing it wrong. So today I dropped by the store and brought myself a cup that they made to see how the pros do it...
Well this is what I got for $5... And it also tastes like crap...
So now my question is do we actually like drinking coffee or non-carbonated sugar water that we call coffee?42 -
When the best event of the day is a business phonecall and you are a developer.
Customer actually gets what we do, is excited about it and is willing to put in some effort. -
When...
- you start the day with good intentions.
- you want to fix some long-due issue
- you think: I'll google it and I'll solve it. What can it be? I just want to track correctly my subdomains with all-mighty Google Analytics
and the first answer you find is:
"Unfortunately, Google Analytics has a few hoops to jump ...blablabla More unfortunately, the Google Analytics documentation is unclear ...blabla"
and 20 more pages of blog.
Fuck.
Let's skip to the next good intention before the day turns bad1 -
I signed up for a trial of some time tracking software. Apparently the company that owns it is incredibly aggressive with their sales department. They sent me 10 emails within the first week (still sending even though I unsubscribed) and have started calling me every day. What have I gotten myself into.2

What a day we are testing a system which was supposed to handle 10 maybe twenty user to handle 12k users.
And i am being lectured this system is using way more resources as it is supposed to be 😔. At design time the same people just wanted to save time.8 -
First day in introduction to programming. We were the first course to learn Python instead of Java. The whole lecture consisted only of what Python is good for and how powerful it is.
He finished with the statement: “... and in the real life, no one writes applications in Python.“6 -
Today I read a comment on devRant about somebody asking what 1337 means. I think most of us know (almost trivial, maybe?), but what is really great is that so many people replied explaining what it means. Some replies were awesome, some were creative, some were just a basic answer to the question.
But none were hateful. ❤️
DevRant is a place for awesome people like you who understand that every one of us doesn't know something every day. That's developer life. That's devRant life too! The other day I told a senior developer about a Haskell project of mine and he asked: 'What is Haskell?' I was impressed, but it taught me a lot.
On devRant I see no troll comments like 'omfg fucking retard, you must be a faggot and live in a dumpster', which are common on the www nowadays and could have been found under a question like 'what is 1337?'. But not here. And this, while I see the occasional swearing in rants, but never at other members.
So thank you for just being normal people among other normal people. We swear at each other's fugly code sometimes, but we are a creative bunch of smart asses that stay classy at it.
👊4 -
What is it about clients that provokes them to ask about the same feature every day? No, it’s not fucking done yet, I don’t have a team of devs under me who work overtime to finish it overnight. It’s not going to get done any faster if you keep fucking bothering me about it.
-
I think I'm in love.
Can you legally marry a computer program? Because I sure would like to propose to git.
When I read the various "What do you regret not doing sooner? Starting to use GIT" rants, I though meh, it cannot be that amazing. But it is, it goddamn is.
GIT already managed to save me ~three days of headache, and possibly prevented me from degrading my AI. And all that on the first day of usage!
I think my life has become at least 30% easier today^^3 -
Jesus fucking christ.
I posted two rants today, both about trying to get my SD card reader to work on my arduino due...
After spending my whole day debugging, rewriting my code multiple times, cutting off anything that wasn't strictly necessary, writing my code procedurally, I finally decided to go and see what the library I HAVE to use is doing under the hood.
APPARENTLY...
uint_fast8_t is NOT 8 bits wide on my due...
The bitshifts were "overflowing" (not really, just taking more space, which it had access to) meaning that my data was getting corrupt.
FUCK YOU FOR TAKING A DAY OFF MY LIFE1 -
Dr Lanning from I, Robot:
There have always been ghosts in the machine. Random segments of code, that have grouped together to form unexpected protocols. Unanticipated, these free radicals engender questions of free will, creativity, and even the nature of what we might call the soul. Why is it that when some robots are left in darkness, they will seek out the light? Why is it that when robots are stored in an empty space, they will group together, rather than stand alone? How do we explain this behavior? Random segments of code? Or is it something more? When does a perceptual schematic become consciousness? When does a difference engine become the search for truth? When does a personality simulation become the bitter mote... of a soul?
One day they'll have secrets... one day they'll have dreams. -
I NEED COFFEE HELP PLZ! :'(
I have a long time working on a project, since I started taking coffee in the mornings i realized that the coffee sucks..
So i looked for it and realized that old coffee was processed every day with the new coffee...
Anyways..
Im up to shitty project, shitty pc, shitty documentation, stress, pressure..w/e i don't care..
What I can't FUCKING stand is a disgusting coffee that tastes horrible! D:<
Is it too much to ask?? :'(6 -
When client for past few days tells you how important that new feature he wants is, and you should get to it asap.
But then when you actually start working on it after discussing it, specification creation and preparations, with mind set and focused, he tells you:
- 'Know what? I will need that change in the old feature before that. You can postpone the new feature by one day.'
So... How was it the most important thing in the universe again? -
What do you mean you sent a fucking mail about it? Theres a reason we have case systems with case fucking numbers. Its so that we can keep track of different customers, which is crucial for day to day operations. You retarded fucking fuck.
-
So i ranted about how bad the snapchat app was in terms of design and performance a few days ago here and at a couple of other places and the general conscience was that I should use it for a few days and i would like it.
Well, here's what i have to say. IT STILL SUCKS!
I tried to use it every day to keep up with what others are doing and sometimes try to post but i really don't like his bad the app is. It doesn't make me want to use it. Its a battery hog. It fucking drinks through my battery like nobody's business. The v10 update made it a bit better but it still sucks.
I still don't like the UX design but I have come to hate it less. It still sucks though.

Work/life balance doesn’t exist!
I have no personal life outside what I do. My creative expression. It heavily influences my every decision and makes up who I am, and it is not possible to draw the line where my creativity ends and my personal life with my partner, friends and stuff begins. Coincidentally, it is also my “job”.
The day my creativity stops will mark the end of what makes my life meaningful.6 -

I shot myself in the foot again!!
These incident usually happen at restless night.
Some night I become too restless so I do what any programmer would do, I program.
The "novel" idea just come up and I code until I become too tired. I usually finish the prototype of the project before I fell asleep.
I usually found out that I have reinvent the wheel the next morning! Great. My "novel" idea is not too "novel" after all.
It is hard to find the novel project these day since it is too hard to beat the decade of collective intelligence of programmer.8 -
Service necessary for many applications is failing at 8am this morning, it connects to a virtual directory. Trying to figure out why it's failing, application is fine, Middleware is fine, asked to reboot virtual directory servers "no we can't do that" fast forward to a wasted day trying to find the error, asked again to restart, they said yes, what do you know it started working again

So, the other day, I was working in Unity, and trying to find the complement of a byte number. That is, 255 - myByte. So, I write this :
Byte newByte = 255 - myByte;
And it says that it can't convert from a byte to an int. Okay... So, I do this:
Byte newByte = byte.MaxValue - myByte;
And still, it errors the same thing. So, a quick google search proves that no matter what, the subtraction operator returns an int. WHAT IS WRONG WITH C#? That is the dumbest thing ever!4 -
The house is quiet...
I work from home most every day. Then came COVID.
Working from home went from a wonderful experience to god awful most days.
It worked like root's rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/2957491/...
So today for the first time in what seems like years (but really just a few months) I'm working from home and everyone is out of the house.
It will only happen a few days a week.... but oh man it is nice ....1 -
Today someone found a 0 day in our trialware which allowed some of the main features to work even after its expiry.
I mean what do you expect when you create a shady system for trialware.
It was fun to watch the lead dev of the trialware panic when it was confirmed.
Tomorrow's standup is gonna be fun.3 -
The feeling that every work day is composed of new challenges that help you to grow and learn more. Also, how cool is it when your code works as intended and with no ramifications on the first try? Last but not least how many people can say that what they do at work is their true passion?

I'm stuck.
Quitting smoking/scrolling/youtube/other unhealthy coping mechanisms, taking my prescriptions and exercising every day made my mind free — now it's unobstructed, clear and not hindered in any way.
The problem is, without constant coping, my memory turned into a minefield. I can't think freely, as I constantly stumble upon trauma after trauma that make my heart physically hurt.
With clear mind, I now clearly see what used to lurk in shadows, and I'm terrified of it. I won't go back to smoking and watching youtube ten hours a day.
What should I do?12 -
So I just heard that Bitcoins are illegal in my country. Like WTF? This is outrageous! Are you that much of a control freak that you couldn't allow a cryptocurrency to run, government? You and your taxes and shits!!! Ughhhh!
On another note, the cryptocurrency is indeed growing its boundaries. What are your opinions on it? Do you think maybe one day it will replace all conventional form of currency as we know it today? If yes, how long will it take?6 -

So this is my last few days with Linux Mint, I will miss you buddy. Either tomorrow or the next day(Switch day is the 10th but I don't know if that's what I want to spend my Friday on, so I'll probably do it a day ahead of schedule) I will be switching to *looks up my distrohop list*, oh boy, Arch Linux. And after reading the installation page on the Arch website, I am now a bit terrified xD

When you compare your past with your old code:
The improvements you could have made, if you had known what you know now.
A commit a day would have kept everything up to date.
A comment every now and then would have made choices understandable
Using classes would have made it easier to replace or reuse code.
Now you have to figure out what the code is supposed to do, and rewrite it.1 -
So I went into work yesterday on my day off right? (Mardi Gras) to finish up a pretty significant addition to our application. I only had 2 days to work on it before we were to show it off to potential buyers today, so I came in to get it to at least a working state that we can improve later...
Well, that wasn't good enough. First thing my boss said when he saw it was, "this isn't what we had talked about". No dip-shit, this is what you get when you have 1 programmer working on their holiday. Like, I know we talked about this massive content update, but we talked about LITERALLY LESS THAN A WEEK AGO. I really don't know what you expect, but I made it very clear that all I could get done was a prototype at best. Not to mention that this whole app is a hard-coded "fake-prototype" that was never supposed to make it this far.... -
Hi guys,
Been lurking for a while and has been refreshing to see I'm not alone in some of 'interesting' issues I face day-to-day!
I am in a situation where I am a technical lead, but any architecture changes need approval by the MD, any software (free, obviously paid for is understandable!) needs signoff before installing, even if it's to see what it's all about! Essentially anything I should be responsible (no matter how minute) needs signoff before I can even attempt anything.
This is my first time that I am in a role of this level, but it seems like I am responsible for a lot but don't have much control over what I can do about it, is this normal? To me it just seems there is no trust in my judgement, which is not justified considering I'm only just being put into the role!6 -
To me this is when you have that one breakthrough you spend considerable time on and with the divine knowledge of a peer collegue solves it in minutes... That feeling of enlightenment. That is what drives me everyday. Learning from mistakes, record progress, expand your knowledge, and call for help when you're stuck. Every single day.

If your company starts handing out a book called “What the heck is EOS?”, be afraid. Be very afraid.
It contains analogies like: there’s a table, sometimes seats get rearranged and there’s no seat for you. No seat = you’re getting laid off.
My last company gave out this book. They even sent it to people they had already laid off (but hadn’t reached their last day yet).
EOS = Entrepreneurial Operating System, in case you were wondering6 -

Depends on what a tough dev day is. If it was just a tough day usually playing ice hockey helps. If it was a stressful day, board games with my daughter, provided it's not a Wednesday (her Mom's night). If it's a tough problem or bug I'm working on then alcohol, running or lifting, sex, general distractions will do the trick

I am an stupid human being. How many times should I experience the same problem to learn from it? I don’t know why should I possibly be obsessed by latest MacOS updates? This fucking error ruined my day. Those fucking idiot coders in Apple must use some unit tests (including transparent iTerm in second display). Fuck you all. My £1600 Macbook pro is literally useless until some fucking coder finds what is wrong in their NEW update.3

Day 11 of devWholesome...
I think it is very important today to express how much we care about others. Today I want you to do something nice for a friend or family member and tell them how much you care about them. You realize how important the ones around us are and what they mean to you. Tell me what you did today that fulfills that goal in the comments. And as always, make the most out of your day!1 -
Remember kids, passwd is a readable file! You can have a very bad day trying to figure out a user's shell from side-channel attacks and getting nowhere, or you could remember that it LITERALLY SAYS WHAT IT IS PUBLICLY IF YOU DON'T FORGET THAT IT'S THERE.
On the plus side, I learned a ton about what you can do with ssh arguments and debugging logs. Shit's pretty cool.5 -
When it comes to using XCode, I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s a stupidly large file. Took a whole day to download, I know having a WiFi speed of 20Mb/s isn’t great but on a brand new iMac with nothing else installed you’d except it to download and install pretty quickly.
Also what is it with the Mac and things not wanting to be full screen??4 -
A Dell laptop, specifically the Inspiron one, they never sleep, so I had to do the crime, multiple times a day, it craps itself, it's AMD chip is shit, it's drivers are the word, and last but not least, this laptop was replaced like 6 FUCKING TIMES, and sometimes I used to be in critical situations where I had to use a laptop and guess what, it didn't want to turn on.
So dell, never again.
One day, I was traveling back home from college, and had my laptop in my bag, and guess what I found out when I got home, the plastic parts in the bag fucking melted, ruined my notebooks, and my bag.
Not to mention it's terrible performance thanks to it's drivers while developing shit with Android studio, you know how it is.
In short, don't buy a Dell product. Ever.4 -
At the end of the day...does the end consumer REALLY give a shit about what language you program in? As long as the app fucking does what it's supposed to right? I feel like this is a never ending rant for me because it seems like programmers will never understand that it doesn't matter as long as the end consumer / client is happy.2

Now, I didn't even really know Employee Appreciation Day was a thing until an article appeared on the company intranet about it coming up.
From Wikipedia:
"It is a day for companies to thank their employees for their hard work and effort throughout the year. This day was created for the purpose of strengthening the bond between employer and employee."
I thought, "Oh, cool. I wonder what they're doing for it."
You know what they did?
They encouraged us to use the internal eCard system to send each other notes of appreciation. "Let's break a record," they said. "Most eCards sent in one day!"
And that's it. That's how my employer showed their appreciation for me.
I feel so... appreciated?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
P.S. Yes, we broke the record.
P.P.S. No, I didn't get any eCards.2 -
Why is tech management so f-ing distant? Very often NOT in meetings which they created and very not interested in anything the team/teams do. It is really a large offset between the work actually being done, the day-to-day operations that we do and the competence of management to acknowledge the fact that we actually do those things.
A lot of times they just stay silent in meetings and in the end they say something to try and make some conclusion and perhaps something ”funny” to try and lighten up the atmosphere. They fail on both of their tasks. They have no clue and are not interested in learning.
I feel like many of them don’t actually do anything. They are often ”away” but it is really unclear what that means.
I think it is symptom of a truly dysfunctional tech process. Bad leaders tend to hire more bad leaders and it is a toxic circle ending in good competent people leaving wanting more in the leadership.2 -
Cordova is the perfect example of the importance of managing a state.
You have 100 plugins in your config and one of them fails? Well, now you are in an inconsistent state. You can't delete the plugin because it doesn't exist but you can't add it because it already exists. If you search any question about cordova on StackOverflow literally ANY answer is like "delete the platform and install it again".
In average I find myself in an inconsistent state more than once a day. No error is handled so I find myself debugging their code and it's horrible, looks like written by someone that had no idea of what he was doing. I know it's legacy and capacitor should be preferred, but what the hell? Really? -
What the hell is wrong with PreferenceScreen in Android? It's a disgusting horrible piece of shit. It looks awesome, but actually it's a horrible trap. Just wasted a whole day, when I could have just implemented it from scratch myself. Never gonna use that piece of crap again.

- You need to edit your autoloader
- Ok, what do I put in it?
- Idk, you're not supposed to do it, and let composer do it for you"
Did I ever tell you how the Drupal stack exchange will one day make me turn into a serial killer? -
Spent days telling people what to do. What the database fields should look like, went down to every little bit, which was annoying because I hired them to think for themselves.
Spent a couple days verifying this and that. "Is this field really needed?"
Of course it's needed, otherwise why would it be in the specs? It took me two fucking days to communicate on these things they could have just done in half an hour.
They do it wrong. It's been clearly outlined and it's still wrong.
Management then insists on more communication so things don't go wrong. We have meetings every day to discuss what must be done. Every other day we have meetings between another project leader to discuss what we just discussed. Every two days we have progress report meetings.
We spend 70% of the time communicating now and everyone still gets everything done wrong. This is why you have to be really, really careful when hiring. Technical interviews can just be giving someone a spec and seeing whether they can do it. -

My first Rant/Story
One year ago I was told I'll be working on a Magento 2 project.
I was told it's great you'll see it's so much better then Magento 1 (at that time I didn't even know what Magento is or what it's used for).
Now one year later, a day doesn't pass that I don't discover something new in it to hate. Every day there is something new that doesn't make any sense at all. But I found my way to live with it.. at least it isn't boring haha -
We need to create a completely software driven music band. Use AI to learn what people like and adjust over time. So the music becomes "better" as more input is received. It should be complete with VR musicians and VR stages and concerts.
The band name would be: Zero Day1 -
Was about 13-14 years old, on my first laptop, a HP Pavilion G6. I had Ubuntu on it, and tried to write an iso to a USB with dd. Didn't work, so I forgot about it for up to maybe a week, and was playing Minecraft one day when my laptop froze and nothing was responding, so I did a hard reboot.
No operating systems found.
Many tears were shed that day.
Took me maybe 6 months to realize that the "botched" dd probably caused the wipe.
Still don't know why my computer was still running... If anyone thinks that the dd didn't cause it I'm curious what your theory is.4 -
I asked my boss if we could move the website to our version control. Reason is because he would make changes and break something and didn't know what he did and so he spends the entire day trying to fix the issue and of he can't figure it out he then asks our only web developer to resolve the issue.
He didn't understand how we could keep it in sync with what is published when he makes changes.
Had to explain to him that's it's only to track changes. He still didn't understand.
How is this person my boss... Only one location for our website, doesn't track changes, and runs the backup on the same computer that hosts the website. Yes... He just modifies the hosting files... -
Today I removed all the stickers I had on my laptop, and it looks pretty clean and better now.
I still remember the day when I would do anything to collect schwag and free stickers. In fact - I joined devRant just to get those free stickers XD.
but yesterday I had to do a presentation in my college and during the presentation, I realized how stupid it is to have a laptop filled with laptop stickers.
What I used to chase in the past, is what I am getting rid of in present. And it is true with many other things as well. We crave things and once we get them it hardly matters to us.
I sometimes wonder what life is really about, and is there anything that we can cherish forever and not take for granted?13 -
So, I got hired as an independent contractor and the first thing they do is put me on a trial period which will be paid if I am able to complete the tasks. But, they said they'll pay me if I complete the tasks provided each day and not hourly. which is fine except the tasks for one day is impossible to complete in a day. Now, I am not sure if it is a big prank or they don't know how much time it takes to implement something like that. Or are they willingly trying to fail me to see my limits? because as far as I can tell, the tasks are impossible to complete in a day and I don't know what am I gonna report in the next meeting. I don't have much experience being in these kind of situation. So, what should I do? should I tell them that it's gonna take more time? are they expecting me to tell them that or should I just shut up and try my best to finish it in a day? is this fairly common?4

I spent the whole day of yesterday trying to install the windows anniversary update after a clean Windows installation. Every time i tried to update it would go through 30% completion and then... BSOD, claiming that i didnt had a boot device. WUT? Anyway, after 5h of research and no success, i created a bootable usb installer and tried to install Windows 10 Education (which is my license). After the 1st restart... Error: Windows could not complete the installation. OH GOD WHY ME? After another hour i figured it out. Somehow i needed to install the version Windows Home and after the installation update to Student. DAMN WHAT A DAY...2

It is on this day i feel inspiration.
Its taken 14 hours to debug the physics and math behind a particular mechanism in the project I've been assigned to for months now.
But I got it right, and fuck is that feeling incredible. It's that feeling that makes me want to continue to do what I do. So fuck you, you obscure, brain fuck of a bug. You will not win EVER! I WILL find you, I WILL make sense of you, and I WILL destroy you. -
I thought: Okay lets update this open source software the day right before my exam. What could go wrong? All previous updates worked without a problem and this is an urgent security fix for RCX.
Of course: It failed. I spend the whole night searching for the error in my config files etc. The error was: A missing null check in start sequence. Had to fix and build it myself as I required the files stored there for the exam.
I learned a lot that day/night about updating only when you have the time to deal with errors... -

I just thought of something. People get butt-hurt when people tell the truth, which is ironically kinda what happened to me. But I’m not mad, I understand lol. Anyways, people always want you to tell the truth, but when you do, they don’t and can’t always accept it. If there were a day where people always told the truth, who knows what would happen, but it wouldn’t be good. But at the same time, people are always holding back their opinions for what? No one’s forcing you, and you don’t really have to. If you see this and there’s something you want to say, to anyone or about anything, even yourself, just go ahead and say it.14

Spend all day debugging simple post request. Like really what is going on. Super simple. Eyes start to bleed. Check spelling on everything. Finally find out the access-control-origin isn't set right, other dev said it was whatever so glad I'm moving on. Nope. Same error running the app from Visual Studio. Check code again. Everything works in a browser. Windows, VS, or the emulator is blocking just POST requests. I can do get requests all day.
What hell. I'm so critical of my code I spend hours pouring over something I knew was right instead of looking for network errors. I just need to trust myself I guess.
Oh and Windows Cordova apps don't support ES6 lol.1 -
I dunno if this is a rant or an anti-rant, but for some reason, Assembly and low-level development hardly ever tick me off. It absolutely dumbfounds me how what many regard as the most frustrating and difficult ways of programming a binary digital computers is just so enjoyable. I agree with Python being very useful due to library availability. Not sure what I think about C beating out C++ though. I would much prefer programming in C++ to C any day. I don't like Java, but a LOT of people use Java.
I find it interesting that a lot of people talk about Rust, but I am not seeing it in the top 10. Is it just too new?
What I find most interesting is that this is a good list of languages to learn. These are what are being used in the field. Well, at least from the the perspective of IEEE.
Thoughts?5 -
How do you do your CI/CD pipeline? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just wondering how the tests and deployment usually runs. Is it on a per team basis? Is it the whole release getting deployed to Test many times per day? What happens if too many automated tests fail or there is not enough coverage, does it abort the deployment? If so, how can every team get delayed by every issue - is that actually a good policy?
My pipeline is very slow and requires a team of 12 people working in shifts to complete it. I’m not an expert but I know it does a lot of steps and never completes without manual intervention. I would like to help but I’m not sure how bad it is.3 -
Programming at a job to me is no longer creating something fun and valuable; it's more like figuring out why shit doesn't work, con-stant-ly.
It' s like coming in to your desk every morning, dreading the day because there's yesterday's shit to fix. "Hmm, what shall today be like? Oh yes, troubleshooting why my database model doesn't work, redesign it completely and break my mind over db details. The next day? Having to redesign my classes to implement new patterns because apparently the current design isn't good enough." Even if you work on new deliverables, that's just new problems in disguise anyway.
Pleasant? Not really.

Thanks guys for the creative ideas on how to get back on her, but I'm doing the responsible thing and I'll send them a nice email detailing why that's fucked up and what they need to change.
Adding important words like, "that behaviour is affecting team integrity" or "it demotivates people", "It is counter productive", "it diminishes team performance", "instills fear".
Maybe, or I'll stick to my work hours and wait for my contract termination notice. 🤣 -
What's it like to be an ITSupport in a public healthcare facility where average employee age is 60y:
Doc: Hello. I can't make this thing work
IT: Hi. What thing? Please describe the problem
Doc: I have _this_ webpge [red.: ITSD knows what page] open but it's not loading anything. It just shows a spinning wheel
IT: I see. Can you hit F5?
Doc: err.. a what?
IT: A key on the keyboard. F5. It's at the top row of your keyboard, slightly left from the middle
Doc: <pause>
Doc: Found it. Okay, I clicked it. Nothing's changed
IT: Maybe the focus wasn't on the browser.. Anyway, can you close the window?
Doc: ...okay...
Doc: <rumble rumble>
Doc: <catching its breath> Okay, I closed it. But I won't have it closed the whole day, it's 27ºC inside.
IT: <facepalm>.... -
Static Vision.
Exactly what you think it is. But maybe lighter than that.
Basically if I unfocus my eyes every so slightly, I can see what looks like really fast drizzling rain, except it looks like light, faintly though. Like I kind of have to look for it, but it's there. Sometimes really obvious, sometimes not.
It's as though being in front of a monitor too much fucked up my eyes, or something.
More pronounced if I've been awake coding for maybe more than a day...
Just me? or anyone else?
Kind of caused me problems a few times, thinking it was something else....
I really want to know if anyone else has experienced this.5 -
Today my day was spent getting bent over by ASP.NET (Core) and for some of it I for some reason for the fucking life of me could not get to work.
And even though I didn’t end the day on a good note in the project, I DID make some small progress, the problem I ran across was that I wasn’t inserting the ID into the database, but the real problem is that I tried to have the database generate the ID itself and increment it, but that didn’t work out so I’m stuck and I have no clue what I should do and I tried to manually set it too for one case but even that resulted in error, so 🤷🏻♂️
Feeling very intimidated while doing this. I’m hoping I’ll be able to write code that can actually scale and handle production.
That’s been my day.14 -
Hey ... Is it possible to figure out the clients path (f.e. C:\Users\...) to a file he uploaded to a website on the server side?
My boss thinks it could be done and wants me to programm it. But I think we'd need a zero day vulnerability in a specific (and probably very old) browser to do something like that... That would be a huge security issue...
Wouldn't it?
What do you think?13 -
I've been trying to install Manjaro all day and night. I've got the USB, loads up grub and when I press to boot from stick/HDD it boots and it doesn't even show a video source. My monitor says "no source"
But I did manage to get into once and install Manjaro on my actual HDD. The problem is when I boot it from there it does the SAME EXACT THING
What the hell. I've tried Gnome and XFCE with multiple usb booting options to install it on the usb. None of it works. I'm pissed.
Goddamnit -
Getting my Code fix On my Phone! Bought a small laptop not long ago, few weeks, and within a couple of days, it threw a blue screen of death. What a crock pot of stewed sht. Now, thankfully, I am pain-stakingly coding on my Android. The good news is, my Asus should be here any day!2

I always knew somehow, without realizing it. Since I was a kid I always was fascinated by technological stuff.
My parents are into humanistic fields so they couldn't give me any good input to understand what I liked exactly.
One day I learned I cpuld tinker with stupid batch scripts until I read on some forum the word "programming".
I was like "wtf is that" and googled the word.
In that moment I realized what I was going to do in my life. -
I am going to school for a BS in computer science and the other day my dad tagged me in a job for IT. Spent the next couple hours explaining what my job actually is.1

Spend all day trying to connect to my online database remotely just to realise there is currently a bug with IP wildcards on MySQL and I gave to add every ip that needs to connect to it manually. What if it's a dynamic ip? Have to add the new one everytime it refreshes. Seriously?!1

Alright devs, in the US, can I not get a SIM card on which I simply put some money, and can use that until it runs out? Seems there is a 30-day limit tied to everything!!! I don't need data for 30 days!!!
This is totally possible in Europe, what is going on with regulation in US? Seems like it should be illegal.4 -
Paid brain.js for some time already because it is so awesome that I feel bad not to.
Then this is a random day that I want to know more about the back story of it, turns out the original author @harthur had such a bad experience on the open source world.
Double-downing on this is that she singlehandedly made 3 of my most favourite packages which is too cute to forget since Node.js has came about.
My gawd, what have people done?1 -
i want to be a js guy and work for either personal clients or maybe a company, what do i need to focus on javascript? is it more on dom manipulation or math logics? just need an idea what the majority of js devs out there are doing on a day day basis18

Ok, so for past 1 whole day I am trying to make vhost work on my brand new laptop, running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS... When I installed OS, I've set hard disk encryption, and on top of it - user home folder encryption. Don't ask me why I did both.
Setting up vhost is simple and straight forward - I did it hundreds, maybe thousands of times, on various Linux distros, server and desktop releases alike.
And of course, as it usually happens, opposed to all logic and reason - setting up virtual host on this machine did't work. No matter what I do - I get 403 (access not allowed).
All is correctly set - directory params in apache config, vhost paths, directory params within vhost, all the usual stuff.
I thought I was going crazy. I go back to several live servers I'm maintaining - exactly the same setup that doesn't work on my machine. Google it, SO-it, all I can see is exactly what I have been doing... I ended up checking char by char every single line, in disbelief that I cannot find what is the problem.
And then - I finally figured it out after loosing one whole day of my life on it:
I was trying to setup vhost to point to a folder inside my user's home folder - which is set to be encrypted.
Aaaaaand of course - even with all right permissions - Apache cannot read anything from it.
As soon as I tried any other folder outside my home folder - it worked.
I cannot believe that nobody encountered this issue before on Stackoverflow or wherever else.9 -
Hello guy who develop the internal library I'm using
Just so you know, no, "idString" is not a cool name for ppl to know what they should use when you have dozens of differents ids.
And no documentation makes it less likeable.
Have a good day, you're making mine being horrible3 -
I’ve bombed 2 online tests now.
I got another one coming in so perhaps it will become 3 soon. I’m not sure at what point my mind will stop blanking out.
This feels like a game of grinding more LC until the test happens to ask stuff that is fresh in my head, or is something that I do in my day job.3 -
Does anybody here still use dreamweaver? I used to use it a lot back in the day when I started as a designer, but haven't used it in years, but I noticed the app in our companies adobe subscription plan and have installed it.
Given that we live in an age of VS Code, sublime text and so one, I'm just wondering does anyone still use DW and if so what is it good at?2 -
Brush up on languages/technologies the company is using/what the job post is for. Say what u like/dislike about those technologies. Most importantly, know that even though you will have many bad days, it only takes 1 good day for none of those to matter!!
-
so what will you do if a company is offering you a job and you have a 60 day notice period? (assuming that the said company hasn't asked this question before/during the interview process)
seeing the current market situation, it seems very risky since the new company is obviously going to keep searching for backup devs who might show up before your joining date.
meanwhile it will be very awkward for you to work during your notice period since 60 days is almost a financial quarter and you are the notice period guy, so you might end with non important tasks
what will you do?5 -
I have an iot solutions company which has 0.5 millions hits per day just from 7 devices. It is on shared server and it bogs down every now and then. In future it is going to grow to 100 million hits.
What kind of cloud instance on aws should i use. Or is there any special hosting for iot devices.4 -
Can human language take over programming language and is it utopian to think and write what I want to get my job done in English and get it parsed compiled and run on any computing environment or am I still day dreaming.4
-
How to remain consistent? Like I really do love what I do. But if there is a task that I can complete in like 2 days, I would allocate 1 week for that task, procrastinate for 4-5 days and finish it in the last day.5

This place has fucking ducks everywhere. Duck is the new Cat here.
Why? What the fuck! If we want cuteness we should have images of http://rethinkrobotics.com/intera/ here. This cuteness will take over the world one day.
Probably, that's why! We'd all be sitting ducks. That's what this duck trend is signifying. Ah! I might see it now.
But, still! Fuck you duck 🦆!2 -
Unity is the worst! Every single version of it has some kind of bug that prevents some piece of what I'm working on to be buggy. 5.3.4 seems the most stable, as far as the app working, but likes to crash on me several times a day on Mac OS. I'm really tired of this.

Stuck on this problem all day... New project using Gradle... Usually we use Maven.
I added a Jodo Time to the project as a compile/implementation depency.
But it doesn't add it to/update the project so I can use it.
I'm not sure what part is screwing up.
Feels like if a class doesn't use a package it won't download it even if it's in the build.properties?
But well I can't use it if it's not downloaded?4 -
So like many others, you decided to make money off your hobby and skills, now you see a raspberry pi and want to set it on fire. See a terminal? Wanna rm -rf / the shit out of it? Soooo, since we've become bored and tired of this shit, have you ever thought in what profession you'd be happy?
Passionate of what you do even if the pay is low, but you finish your day with a smile in the face rather than a post in devrant.6 -
What sucks in wfh setup is there are so many attendance to fill out. Then there’s this tracker that I forgot to time out, then updated it the other day getting the current date time it’s like I work overnight lols

Want a job where walking there one way eats up 50 mins or so of time so that the chunk keeps getting lost and where sitting on ones ass all day is not the norm.
Why can't the fucking FBI do what it claims to do ? Because if it still is. Not seeing it.2
