Client: So you want 50 bucks for 5 minutes work pushing some buttons;
Me: Well yes. I didn't just pushed some buttons... I pushed them in the right sequence and solved your problem.8 -
Had an interest in IT security some time ago, so I downloaded some tools to experiment a little and research to get some first hand experience since a lot of the course material we have at work is too vague....
Guess who got a visit from the police 👮

Your app works.
You do some changes.
It doesn't work anymore...
You restore the old code.
It still doesn't work... WHY?4 -
In the compeny where i work for...
Me: who's our sysadmin?
Some senior: we don't have one. Me, i guess?
Me: (pokerface. yeah..right. walk away.)11 -
Hey fellow selfish Millenials who want to be paid for their valuable work, how's the job hunting going?
I'm a few days into hunting for some interesting part time work and I'm already encountering some real gems... Pinnacle of irony with this one.
Anyone got some horrific tales to share? This is a safe space for your anguish to finally be released, I promise.15 -

After 5 years of neglect I have finaly found some time to work on an old project of mine.
Not a bad view to work from either9 -

Languages I have used this week at work:

Im not kidding.
Time to relax with some good ol' beer 🤣8 -
Hearing from friends and some family... "You don't really work. You just sit in front of a computer all day."8

We're 2 months away from going live.
This has repeated for several weeks now :
Monday : 17 issues (aka bugs, incomplete features)
Work work work.
Friday : 7 issues
Nice. Lets get a good weekend rest and finished this next week.
Next Monday : 17 issues.
QA found some new bugs or some already resolved issues came back with different details.
...and repeat. Exact numbers, plusminus 1 or 2.7 -
So awesome to see 112 of my 400 steam titles, including some of the AAA ones work on my new Linux installation.2

This morning i wanted to work on my freelance project and it was corrupted for some reason, i started panicking, shed some tears, did a few shots, shed some more tears and after about 30min of doing this I realised that my project is on github and everything's fine now

*opens Eclipse to do some dev work*

Thank you Intel. I needed that...5 -
Wanna have some fun at work.
Print out a beautiful sheet of voice commands for the printer.
Lean back and wait :)2 -
I read a lot about people complaining about their shitty jobs. Some of us actually have nice jobs, but could really need more coworkers.
Wouldn't it be nice if devRant had the possibility to post job offers? Of course, no recruiters allowed, just awesome job offers, so we can all work together on some nice projects.
PS: Could really need some help at work :-)5 -
WHAT'S NEW
We removed some things that weren’t working properly, fixed some things that weren’t working properly, and added some things that might not work properly. -
Just picked up some freelance work because someone recognized my dev rant shirt.
Devrant has become a cabal.5 -
When you take a freelance project for some extra money and realize the last thing you want to do after work is work

Some free time at the weekend. My immediate thoughts are "Ooh, I could get some work done to get ahead on Monday"
The cons of your job as a hobby! -
My Task: Create a new application in a custom C#-Framework, to replace screens from the old application.
Me:Fine.
The old application has a Java Frontend.
Me:Fine.
The old application has an Oracle-DB.
Me:Fine.
The old application has its logic fully on the DB.
Me:What ??
You cannot connect to the DB via ODBC.
Me:But why ???
You cannot use external libraries, just our framework.
Me: For what are you thinking i can use to call the functions on the DB
You have to use a custom connection-bus which uses JDBC
Me:Fine.
This connection-bus cannot call SQL Statements and return the result.
Me:WTF, how should i get the data out of the Database ?
We don't know find a way.
Me:Ahh fuck off.3 -
While reviewing some DB work, I asked why most of the tables in the database didn't have indexes (some didn't even have primary keys).
He answered: "Well I thought they really didn't neeeeeeed them?"3 -
Sometimes you just have to kick your wife and kids out on a beautiful day so you can get some work done.4

Apple macbook engineering department hard at work:
1) Some app freezes

The lack of ability to think logically in some peoples brain is astonishing. And annoying, when you have to work with them. Fuck me.6
-
Pomodoro timers work only when the task at hand is boring. Yesterday, I worked non-stop on some task I greatly enjoyed(Rust embedded) and I would get distracted if there was some disruption because some overrated technique.6
-
At work I use C# / .net but outside work I use PHP / Laravel.
I notice they are very similar.
Also .net used “razor”
Laravel uses “blade” - “razor blade”
Is there some sort of overlap between .net and laravel I’m not aware of?5 -
Dat moment when, after some hard work, you can finally delete that abomination your predecessor left you as a present...
-
Just started as a remote dev and I found that it's IMPOSSIBLE to work from home.
Get annoyed from something not compiling/errors? Go play some video games two feet away. Nothing going your way? Go lie down on the bed behind you.
But for some reason I can work from home way better at night.
Any other tips for working remotely?9 -
Damn, it's quite refreshing to work on some C#.NET microservices instead of the usual PHPTSD in the CMS Of Doom™...4
-
Makes a joke about my work laptop im getting that we should all invest in some game development so we need some new laptops (we develop prototype apps to validate ideas for startups and i never work on proper projects). I get to work and see this.. Omw im so happy..1

While working on generic enterprise code: querying databases, calling third-party APIs and just passing data around, I'm thinking: "PLEASE LET ME DO SOME THINKING, LET ME WORK ON SOME HARD ALGORITHM OR SOMETHING!"
When finally working on 'some hard algorithm or something', I'm thinking: "ARGH! MY HEAD ACHES! GIVE ME RELEASE! LET ME WORK ON SOME MINDLESS ENTERPRISE CODE!"1 -
Time management tips one must follow to be successful:-
1. Remove distractions:- Phone, Whatsapp, Instagram, FB, etc. All away from you during work.
2. Remove clutters: Get rid of not required things.
3. Eliminate redundancy
4. Emulate others: (My favourite) If someone has spend time and done some work. Do not reinvent the same work done just replicate that work and continue from that point.
5. Share burden: Team work and depending on others is not bad.
6. Make work fun: Most important if you enjoy your work you will give your best.5 -

the feeling when you work 9 hours a day and you are waiting to get home to work on your own apps. getting home takes an hour. After arriving home your girlfriend (who was home whole day doing nothing) tells you that you should go to buy some stuff and we got some letters so you should go to post office as well....7

Allowing programming to take over my life; if it's not work, it's side projects; forgetting to live a life away from work in some form.2
-
I hate coming into the office! It's cold, people microwave smelly food, and I can't break up my work sessions with some gaming or anime. I wish remote work wasn't seen as such a scary thing for companies.2
-
Holiday was gud 🤩 Now some rest and work tomorrow 😴 If anyone wants some good steaks for dinner, I could put my calves up on ebay for a nice price 🤣3

My usual day at work, as a Designer.
Boss: Wow! Awesome design. Great work. I loved it.
Me: Thank you.
Boss: But wait, I have some change suggestions.
(After a while, gives 10-15 change suggestions that will completely change the overall design)10 -
Relax, they said. Eat some turkey, spend time with family.

Have some troubles with MySQL server with multiple instances.
After some search, I have a “bind-address” parameter set to “127.0.0.1”
Changed to “localhost” do the trick. Love my work.7 -
If anything pisses me off more than some random client talking trash about my software bc they don't know how to use it, it is some guy taking credit for someone else's work and get away😡2

Saw some desk pic yesterday; here's mine at home. Mostly for gaming, but I do some work occasionally at it. Laptop's setup so I can monitor some Asterisk servers at work.

Decided to work from home today to get some solid work done, and I now get a fucking guy with a leaf blower right outside our place!
😒😡1 -
I keep spreading myself too thin. I pick up too many projects and find myself not working as much as I want on my main projects. I've been getting better about realizing this, and I caught myself after less than a month. But shit. I need to stop it.
-
Being a team leader some times sucks have to take responsibility for everyone's elses functionality that doesn't work or wasn't tested in production. Leads often ends up working overtime fixing everyone elses work :(1
-
Heureka! I made it work! I made it work!
After two weeks of trying shit and fixing without any clue what the fucking problem is, I finaly made it work.
Somehow Atom had a problem finding the correct paths on my Windows 10 machine. After I retried it on the Windows Console it perfectly worked.
Some solutions are simple. Some problems are stupid!
All thanks goes to @AlexDeLarge for writting awesome comments and understanding Webpack so damn well. -
Remote work for me, but not for thee!
Google angers employees with 'hypocritical' remote work policies
Employees were already stirred up over opaque policies on remote work.
Then a senior executive announced he's moving to New Zealand in what some workers consider special treatment.

Looking for some advice
Does anyone do freelance work on the side? If so how did you get the work? Whats it like freelancing?
I'm looking to try and earn some extra cash5 -
Hate it when microsoft forces you to use windows to work with some software. Well guess fucking what?16
-
Tonight, I gave birth to my first fully functional and deployment-ready dockerized application, "lestadium_web_1"!!
The big baby contains a Laravel showcase website with some React already in production! Big bonus with that, it's connected to a database, and I managed to setup some environment variables so nothing too dangerous is built within the image!
Fuck, that was exhausting but I'm so happy to finally understand how to make my stuff work, how they work and how to find some examples to get inspired from 😍4 -
Finishing half a days work while waiting for some linux user to get the audio working for a video call.1

Can't help but when watch most profiles(some exceptions)of ranters I see are front end developers. Aren't here some guys who work on developing frameworks, work on linux kernels or maybe work on linux distros?
P.S.: I love RoR and will contribute to make it better. So the image.7 -
Business idea:
- Buy some big old computer.
- Sell them as quantum computer.
- Get cash and run away.
Currently this idea may work. 🤔3 -
Yesterday was a day off so I developed a vue, vuex , laravel application. Today back to work and start writing some shity code!1

Some minutes ago our firewall in office overheated, no internet, no network, no real way to work some time for coffee and nerd talk - not bad at all1

Took some leave recently to interview for a new job. Back to work to find that I have nothing to do. Asked for more work and got nothing. This place just gives me constant reminders of why I'm looking elsewhere4

Found this in some knowledge base article of a big software company.
I'm gonna use this as my automatic email response for work.3 -
After only using Linux for some weeks I decided to start my mac again.
Half of the programs didn't work anymore, I shit you not -
Has anyone else built any websites or apps for friends or family for free? Is it just me, or is free work always the least appreciated? The demands are also unrealistic. Meanwhile my full-time employers charges over $6000 for a week of work for the client which on some weeks is things like adjusting some styles and changing some config, and they are appreciative every time.7
-
Well, not all people close chrome tabs after work, some close Firefox tabs too. You damn browserists.6

Just relocated to work in stockholm to work as android dev. Any devs out here who would like to meet up have some coffee or a beer and teach me the swedish ways? :D1
-
Wrote some code. Didn't work.
Cleared all build caches, deleted project files and re-opened the project from scratch. Code still doesn't work.
Copied the same code over to a new project. Works.
I FUCKING HATE DAYS LIKE THESE!!!2 -
"Hey, this developer does some good work, I think I'll follow them to keep up... Oh, their online presence is consumed in identity politics? Damn."1
-
1. Finish what is left over from 2017
2. Get some experience with machine learning
3. Finish internship and work as a normal full-time dev -
Some say shooting yourself in the foot. What do you call a self-inflicting bug that costs you 3 work days in a team sprint?
-.-4 -
today i witnessed the most sexist and homophobic talk at work. i just couldn't believe I'd still hear some stuff in 2022, it felt surreal13
-
In Morning: Let's remove this bug.
*after some time*
"Ok!!! I would solve this at night time."
Night: leave it! Let's work on another project. -
Started work at a call center recently, really hoping things work out since it's full time, if you're inclined I'd appreciate some help toward that stress ball, I think I may need it soon...4

Someone got a tip how to start contributing to open source projects? I really want to spend some time to help out but I have some problems finding something small to begin with. It seems that everything i find needs some kind of specialist know how.
So my plan is to start with some small things to work myself up to bigger projects
Thanks :)6 -
Sometimes I feel guilty when someone has worked on some unquoted bit of work that they've invested some time in and everyone gives a low quote in poker planning - tend to give a little extra complexity points for them, gotcha back bro 👍1

Yaaaay, cells now size themselves correctly on the main feed! (Profile view still needs some work but it’s also improved some)9

This is some production code of a completely butchered Wordpress site I have been forced to work on (the previous developer managed to break the site so the archives section failed to work).
Words literally fail me.1 -
Fucking fuckers!!! Why the fuck EVERY time I work from home, there's gotta be some jackass with a leaf blower, drill or chainsaw...4

I think, sometimes, I just love working. Even if it's a holiday.
It's like a refreshment.

How to this? Holding a sheet with [Obsolete] above their heads doesn't work. (@Obsolete() neither).
Live is so cruel.1 -
It's 1:15 AM and I just got gome from work after 16 hours working on some really difficult mission critical things and deploying.
I think it's 16 hrs, my mind doesn't really work anymore. Good thing I drove home safe...1 -
Some work is meant to be perfect before revealed. And some times that work is presented live to a room of Execs 10 minutes after the last update.
Fortunately we cleared this tune. -
ME IRL:

That moment you’re sitting at a developers conference and some keynote about some lame business plan is given... We all know you came from nothing and became big because of the good work you did. Now, gtfo!

What's your coding drink?
Personally: Anise or thyme tea or a large Cappucino because you know this brain need some premium fuel to work 😂26 -
The fucking worst part about web dev is getting the damn .htaccess file to work properly. I usually do some basic url rewriting but then it won't work locally, or I have to restart the server (which of course I fucking forget), and then suddenly it *does* work without restarting the server... Just arghhhh4
-
hi guys, do you have extra work and need a budget friendly dev to help you? hit me up for quality work on a deadline. my tech stack is html, css, js, react, and currently learning ruby on rails. i need to gain some experience working on projects + be able to pay up some bills

Bitch!!!!
I have started to hate stackoverflow
I mean I asked a simple question about how to download a PDF over JavaScript. The question is marked duplicate and down voted.
How stupid can some dumbasses be? Yes a similar question was asked and answered
But..
The duplicate post they’ve marked used to work,USED to , that code doesn’t work anymore.
I mean come on I’ve specifically written I tried that and it doesn’t work anymore. But some fuckers just want to look cool by downvoting other.4 -
I never take breaks at work unless it’s lunchtime - this of course has led to some health problems, so now I try taking more breaks.
But when I’m having a tough time at work I try to notify my colleagues and I usually take breaks more often. Some of which include going for a walk outside, catching some fresh air.
And when commuting home I drink some beer on the train and play sudoku or a binary puzzle while listening to podcasts, or I just take out my Switch and play. -
I'd love to work for NASA or Space X and be one of the first to colonize mars. Should that not work out, I also really want to work for Google and do some freelance work on the side maybe. And all of that is only true if by then I haven't created the next big tech thing.

Saw my dad doing some frontend work alongside the devils spawn work (PHP), when I was 8 years old. Ever since I've fallen in love with programming, especially in backend work.

Alright, anyone ranting about politics/censorship rn needs to take a break, eat some food, drink some coffee, and get back to work damnit.2

Something that irks me is the misinformation that the DOGE proof of work is less complex and more energy saving than the BTC proof of work.
BTC: SHA-256
DOGE: SCRYPT (SHA-256 + Some additional steps and higher memory consumption)11 -
Now that I got some time off work, I'd love to dig deeper into programming, are there any new trends around?8

I really should work on that project to finish it on time... lets work some hours on this side project!

Trying to figure out what the fuck and why I did some stuff in gradle dependencies to get shit to work
joke is I didn't understand it back then anyway and was just following some documentation to get shit to work2 -
I have no burnouts. I dont have kids, I'm full of energy, I'm ready to crush it. BUT every goddamn time i come to a company they run out of work/clients/projects. I end up doing nothing or some video tuts, and then change the company. I WANNA WORK! GIVE ME SOME REACT WORK, PLEASE! I WANNA FEEL DEADLINE PRESSURE! I WANNA COMPLAIN THAT I HAVE BURNOUT! I'M TIRED OF VIDEO COURSES AND TO-DO APPS!
I'm paid money to do nothing. As appealing as it sounds, it's not when you're a junior dev trying to get some experience.
Am I doing something wrong??? -
Today was a shitty day. i made a mistake and lost my work (3days of work gone) had to do it from scratch managed to recover some parts tho. FML1

The unix shell syntax is weird looking.

So yesterday, I was testing some new features that I just implemented in this project at my internship. The thing did not work.
Today, I came in, literally changed nothing, opened up the test again, and now the features work perfectly fine.
I don't know how to feel about this. Veteran programmers, please give me some advice. -
I am afraid I might fall asleep tonight. I got work to do. I better make some good coffee.
P.s. No coffee at home -
Some months ago I talked about creating a platform to build websites based on command with the help of AI just like we have ChatGPT and some argued about the possibility.
Lol so funny some hard ass already put in the work: https://framer.com2 -
None of my collabs were walk in a park. Some were better, and some worse. Never worked in a team that worked without serius communication problems. Some individuals stuck out as great for me to work with. I guess you can’t have a perfect team.1

Balance work and life? Recently? I’ve cut my number of friends in half. There’s been enough betrayal and petty bullshit to write a melodramatic soap opera.
I did have some work life balance once upon a time, but it’s been all work lately. Gotta get back to having some me time. Not all dev work necessarily. I’ve accidentally jumped in the real estate game with 2 feet.1 -
Starting to work on a project as a trainee.
Trying to deploy the project on Eclipse.
404 Error when using my browser, while it did work some weeks ago, when I launch it to try.
"Hey, clean the project, and the Tomcat directory, and it will magically work."
It did work.
/shrug -
With all this AI generative stuff I feel pretty ok with having done an exit from actual coding work some time back. (I know there is infinite work left but anyways…)
And…
YOU FUCKING IMBECIL FRONTENDERS. MAKE BACK WORK! PERSIST THE FUCKING VERTICAL SCROLL POSITION!!! MAKE WEB GREAT AGAIN!!! #MWGA2 -
Normal people : Save thier work regulary.

So, what kind of clothes do you normally wear on a workday?

What's the difference between the society I work for and some shitty drama-filled telenovela?
Well please tell me because I can't find any. -
If people at work spent half as much time working as they did posting articles in teams channels about “strategy” and then congratulating each other on finding said articles, we’d actually get some work done.

if you work at some company, how much do you earn per month?
note: you are anonymous; no one knows who you are; no one knows what company you work for - so feel free to be honest ;)20 -
Thinking of logging into work to do a side project and learn some new tech.... bc I don't have time to work on it during the week...
And there's no personal use case to do this stuff...2 -
I guess I should notify them that there is still some work to do on that website....

A few times per week, I get inspired and think up some projects that would be really cool to build.
But then by the time I get home, all I want to do is get some rest from a long day at work. So the list of side-projects grows.
How do you guys find time to actually get anything done outside of work?1 -
I guess this is more of a work environment question than a dev one. Are you friends with your teammates/ coworkers at work ?
I’ve had some bad experiences and now I’m in a much saner environment and despite everyone being nice, some afterworks and out of work events, I still can’t quite give my full trust. Should I ? I can’t shake the feeling something is gonna go wrong if I do…
EDIT: For additional context, I work in a big company where my interactions with my colleagues are not really followed closely like they would be in a startup I guess.5 -
Here I am, learning how to Excel to help my father in law with some problem he is facing at work. It feels so weird!1
-
Sometimes I think, "can't I just do some quick SQL work to change the form requirements?" And then I remember, "oh wait, women don't work that way."
-
As a newbie dev, I'm looking for partners to work together. You know I feel like unmotivated right now for some unknown reasons. So I thought of changing the pace by meeting with some new people who feel the same. By working on some not-real-world-project or silly ideas together, we can learn how to work in collaboration. We can also share some new ideas together!1

Since i'm clearly not swamped with things to do already, school, work, family.. I thought i should pick up some sideprojects. Where to start?4
-
Some people have this attitude of not giving a fuck. Like if something does not work, they'll be like "yeah" and move on.
If I can't perform some task at my work, I get crazy but for some it's just nothing. Like yeah so it happened.2 -
I was planning going to a bar drink some beer while listening to some live blues tonight, but gave up. Getting really tired after work lately, I'm here typing this in my bed and wondering what is wrong with my body.3

I finally have a week off and the first thing I do is start a project exploring some solutions for the project at work send help.

Really hate it when a project is switching focus every month or so. You start focusing and committing a lot of time to make things work. Taking initiative to enhance things. Then some weeks later management is switching focus and you have to port all fixes in the new code base. Then some weeks later you have to work on the things you did before but with some adjustments that result in the old code not being possible to use and you have to port fixes again. When complaining you sometimes get the question "how hard can it be, it's just some code". Some motivation is lost every time. And repeat this like a "while true" loop.
-
when you get to your pc needing to get sorted for some work and of course windows 10 is updating. and its removed important software :(

What should you do if the project manager is not assigning you any new work after the backlog already has been cleaned up?
I currently work as a junior front-end dev. For the past few weeks, the 2 juniors (incl. me) are lacking tickets. For example, I got 2.5 days of work assigned during our 3-week sprint. We already followed some courses, read some books & created some designs for upcoming features (that have no "functional specifications" written down).3 -
Repost maybe?
Convince me that either gitlab, or github is better.
I like some of the features on gitlab, but some of my integrations don't work for gitlab.3 -
Open Question?
Can you describe how is your life /work balance as a IT professional?
I will love to hear some insights about it3 -
I'm surprised at the lack of ranting about Tapplock. It's some of the worst dev work I have ever heard of.1

Tried moving over to Fedora only to notice the goXLR audio interface doesn’t work on Linux tried some unofficial drivers but you need to run those in the vm or whatever to get it to work.
So question, does anyone know of any audio interfaces similar for Linux with some sound channel rockers potentially.2 -
Does no one understsnd the work "exactly"?
"I need to see some of the elements on this page" is not exact. -
By experimenting. By trying to integrate different tech and seeing how things work out.
If something doesn’t work out, you know the problems, if something does work out you have one more way of solving some problems.
(Also by freelancing, adding these successful experimentations into a shippable product and adding it to yoir portfolio) -
AL freakin M
Seriously some of the most frustrating SW I'd have to work with.

Hey,
I've been wanting to take on some freelance work in my free time. As I have a lot of free time.
So does anyone know a site more geared towards amateur to intermideate dev's who want to gain experience and are willing to work at lower rates because of that ? Or any site where i can just hop on and find some work. I've been suggested upwork but that seems to be more for more experienced devs.4 -
