Writing some code on a flight
"ARE YOU HACKING?!?!"
"Ugh... Well yeah but not in the way you're thinking"
"Omg I'm getting a flight attendant"
Needless to say I'm still en route because the flight attendant realized that I'm not Mr Robot, nor do I have ZeroCool scribbled on my laptop anywhere.12 -
Our dev team got a new manager. On our first face 2 face meeting:
Manager: So, what technology are we using for web apps?
Me: TypeScript.
Manager: What is TypeScript?
Me: It's a superset of JavaScript.
Manager: Oh I know JavaScript, it's the latest version of Java, right?
Me thinking: He is joking. He tries to be the fun guy. Everyone knows the Java-JavaScript, ham-hamster joke.
Me later, also thinking: No he is not joking. Oh God, this is the end. We are all f*cked!8 -
"serverless" is a stupid name. There's always a server, just not yours. It's just as dumb as people thinking "cloud" means there's no computer. There's always a computer, just not yours.9

Ok, this is a rant against some devRanters.
STOP THINKING THE ANSWER TO ANY PROBLEM IS SWITCHING TO LINUX! STOP!
I am a linux user but i fucking hate people who act like dickheads to other OS users.
-A node.js problem is not a windows/linux problem
-An android studio problem is not a windows/linux problem
-A problem with website x is not a windows/linux problem
Understand the problem and give a relevant answer, don't just spit "Use Linux" everytime.40 -
So my boss sent me a msg at 00:05 to update production.
And here I was at 7:30am reading it with a poker face thinking "no dude, my working hours are not like that, lol. Get a life."6 -
I'm creating a website and I'm thinking: Wow, I use html, css, javacript and python, I'm awesome! Then I see what other people know: shit, I'm not awesome...
Programmer: the more you know, the more modest you become...8 -
Object oriented thinking.
A boy tries to look at girl in a class.
Girl : It's bad manners.
Boy : No it's not. "MEMBERS OF THE SAME CLASS CAN ACCESS PRIVATE DATA".9 -
Do you ever talk to yourself out loud while thinking/programming/debugging? (Not a rubber duck in sight, because that makes it okay?)
I need to avoid making this a habit..
Me: What? Why is this even an error?
Someone: What?
Me: What?14 -
As I'm a privacy conscious person and people often call me paranoid, i decided to have a look at the definition of paranoia.
Paranoia appearantly consists of:
- having intense fearful/anxious feelings.
- delusional thinking, thinking that things which aren't true are true.
These are the most common symptoms I could find on every health website.
The interesting part is that neither of those things apply to me... (not delusional either, the things I try to protect myself from are quite real)

NFF = Not Funny Friend.
NFF: what is your smart phone?
ME: OnePlus 3
NFF: Oh you have 4 !
ME: hehe, yeah. I am thinking to buy the new OnePlus 5.
NFF: you're gonna to buy 6?? wow
ME: Ok stoop2 -
Was thinking of a name for my currently biggest project and thought of a funny one, took the first letter of each word and started to use that to refer to the project, was thinking about domain names and such already etc.
Just wrote it down and I suddenly noticed:
ONE OF THE LETTERS IN THE SHORTCUT ISN'T CORRECT.
How the fuck did I miss that for fucking weeks?! It's not like it's a difficult sentence/set of words or anything.
I'm so fucking glad I didn't register domains or shit yet.
How. In. The. Living. Hell.12 -
Well, the OS that is my brain has an official uptime of 19 years... It's gotten pretty buggy, I'm not sure what the devs were thinking with half the features...12

Teacher: hey, your good with computer programming, right?
(Thinking I finally have a chance to prove myself programming wise.)
Me: yeah, Sure
(Trying not to blow my own trumpet)
Teacher: great, can you fix this word document for me?

Rant rant = new Rant

I woke up this morning after not thinking about my code for a day, and realized i had a flaw in my validation design. I fixed it before opening my eyes.
It's kind of amazing how not thinking about a problem can help solve it. Even if you don't know it's there!6 -
Me doing monday morning Support because all of our fucking support members were not available.
Me: Can you navigate to the Installation path of our Software.
Customer: how?
Me: with the Windows File explorer
Customer: i dont have That
me: Explaining how to navigate to the install location (thinking: fuck my life)8 -
Client: hey ***, happy birthday can you help me fixing....
Me thinking: hell no, i deal with yall fuckers 364 days a fucking year and yall can't leave me the hell alone for one cocksucking day. I need this one damn day a year not dealing with yall assholes where i don't snap and drive 300 fucking miles to not drive a nail in a broomstick and drive it up your fucking asdls6 -
BRAIN_UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION
Could not execute "sleep()", as main thread was busy thinking about why a beautiful girl would just handle me her number.
Ok we did get on well but it was unexpected nevertheless
Thank you brain for wasting my day 👍11 -
ME: I'm having problems with my parents
GF: Why don't you talk to them?
ME: I can't
GF: Why not?
ME: They're made of code
GF: ... thinking... ~face palm~3 -
Am I only one thinking that Linux is kind ok cliche among programmers. Some of them brag about using Ubuntu over Windows like it makes you a better programmer. I have seen brilliant Windows developers and shitty Linux developers. My point is not that Windows is better, just stop bragging that you are using Ubuntu, it does not make you smart or better than others.20

Product team having a proof of concept demo with client:
Sales to client: "Just for the record, we are not selling this to a rival company. Because we really want this technology exclusive to you"
Me (thinking to myself): "Oh really? We just had a demo with them last 2 weeks"
One of the core values of our company is Integrity, and I am not just seeing it. -
Signed up for a coding contest that starts at 9am. I’m bad at timed code challenges, but I’ll never get better if I don’t push myself.
Woke up in a panic, thinking I’d overslept... 1.5 hours after falling asleep.
This is definitely not going to help matters. Thanks, brain.10 -
Whenever I see a programmer or hacker coding in a movie, I pause the movie and see if I can understand what the code is trying to do. If I can't understand it, I feel sad the rest of the day thinking I'm not a good enough programmer.7

Had an employee evaluation today that I had been anticipating with a lot of anxiety since December. Went in with major impostor syndrome thinking I’m just not contributing enough and I was going to be put on the spot. But, they told me they couldn’t be happier with the work I’ve been doing. Now I can finally relax.3 -
When I switched jobs from a slow-paced media company, to a fast-paced startup and learned what my team leader can accomplish in a day, would take me atleast 3 days... Not to mention doing things I wouldn't dream of thinking about them.
This experience has made me doubt my very own existence, let alone skills.2 -
Tester commenting in a Jira ticket:
"Not testable"
Me thinking:
"Why? 🤨 Has he been attacked by a tiger or something?"12 -
When you build a site on heroku not thinking alot of people will see it, and out of nowhere you get crazy messages from alot of people saying why does it take 5 hours to load your website. :/

Not commenting enough, using if instead of switch, messing (and breaking) the IDE, not reading pop up messages, thinking and not doing, watching Netflix, starting on new projects before finishing old ones, complaining about certain languages, googling instead of figuring it for myself (sometimes), let my friends persuade me into making something for them, run-on sentences, not enough comments, giving up quickly, not doing adequate research, and of course, not writing down good ideas I have.9

During interview...
Interviewer: Do you know what is JQuery?
Applicants: Yes?
Interviewer: what is JQuery?
Applicants: am.... (in a couple of minutes thinking, the right answer that could be)
Applicants: JQuery is Java Query?
a pretty honest mistakes where the applicant do not know the answer and looks confident during interview5 -
Turns out scrolling through devRant while thinking for a function name was not a good decision after all.8

I do think C# is the best language going. It's basically got everything, and VS is, weirdly for a Microsoft product, among the best IDEs. You get to thinking that it's actually harder to write unorganised code than not with it: it becomes difficult to imagine writing messy, repetitive or spaghetti code in C#.
Then you use Unity.24 -
Dev: The requirement is not clear. This seems to be a general usecase which you are thinking we might need but we won't actually need it.
Manager: You have to do it. This is the requirement. No other option. Don't ask any questions.
...... One week later....
Manager: Why is the team not open to me?1 -

Hmmmm they are selling some used dell precission t3500 desktops at work.
Intel Xeon, 8 gb ram, windows 7 for $60 bucks. Thinking about using it as an experimental Linux machine.

I try and try and try to teach my coworker critical thinking skills, proper programming techniques, and standard git etiquette. Then I add 4 booleans to solve one problem, use strings instead of ints to find unique SQL Server entities, and push right to the development branch.
I am a real asshole, but at least I am not fake.4 -
So tired of LinkedIn recruiters thinking software development is the same as IT. Yes there are some overlap of skills but I'm not going to switch from web development to maintaining exchange servers.5

A lot of my friends have tried to get into programming, for various reasons. The reason why many of them end up quitting it soon is that they don't understand that programming is thinking, not typing.3

a girl from my class made a presentation and it was really good, and now i'm thinking "how did she do it? what came to her mind that she could prepare such a good presentation?"

Guy I work with messaging me: Hey could you check my SQL syntax to get the date part for the month and year.
Me thinking: Ughhh this is going to be something stupid I know it. Why doesn't he just check it himself?
I check it... 2 queries that are very, very, very... simple... and similar except one returns last year (2017) and the other returns the current year (2018)
Me: Not sure what your issue is... I'm not getting any syntax errors. They are executing
Him: Well it shouldn't show 2017, it should show 2018
Me thinking: learn to debug you lazy fuck
Me: Well you're adding a -1 to your year...(Not sure why your even adding to it if your just getting the current month and year)
Him: Oh you're correct! That makes sense

PHP is the best framework for VSCode.
Now that I have your attention... Have you written a technical article? I'm thinking of writing something frontend related but not sure what topic to pick.
I'd love to hear about your experience and any tips you may have :D11 -
It's official, the "front end dev" doesn't know how to code.
Why.
And it's not a "Well I don't know JS because I use React." scenario, no. He has almost no idea of coding.
What was he thinking trying to build the front end of a very complex app with just HTML, CSS and stupid copied and pasted snippets?5 -

Things that are obvious to me when I talk are not at all obvious for the people around me. Not at all. Whatever I say, people hear something else, and I have to elaborate.
There are two possible reasons.
A) 95% of people around me are fucking stupid
B) Long chain of conclusions I encounter and decide to skip is not evident, and is an example of lateral thinking. I have to be more specific and tell the whole chain when I speak.9 -
I still wonder why people go to programming classes thinking a dev is paid a lot. Not all devs are paid a lot and it takes passion and hard work to be a good dev. Don't just go there for the money. You'll regret wasting your life.4

Kiki’s Autistic Stories!
Living with synaesthesia is very interesting. To me, drinks, especially homogenous and complex ones like espresso or vine, make sound I can describe. This is a system, this is not random. People are agreeing with me. Colours have taste.
But I fear just one thing. There is a certain colour, especially when it’s a glass of that colour, that “tastes” so fucking bitter sweet that it gives me migraine. When I see it, I have to immediately close my eyes, go away, do something to forget it, otherwise migraine. Somehow, thinking of it is unpleasant, but thinking alone doesn’t induce a migraine.11 -
This is not really the reason I got these parts, but I just had them lying around and have been following the project for some time... so why not? Haha. I was also thinking it might be cool to set these up to auto-disrupt known AP names that would be issued by companies most responsible for the dismantling of Net Neutrality. Like just make them in a dirt cheap throwie form-factor and let the companies deal with pissed off customers for a few days until the battery dies (thinking the little generic LiPo’s that cheap quadcopters use would give a few days if attacking sporadically and using the ESP’s sleep function). Just riffing here... ;P ;D2

I'm not saying you're stupid, just that you hardly ever do any thinking and even on those rare occasions the results make me wish you hadn't tried.

I think reactjs is an actual cult. Not like one, not similar to one, but a real actual cult.
They have magical thinking, deny reality, blindly follow whatever new things there is, rationalize insane things, require immense time commitments, have an elitist attitude, it's an actual real life cult.74 -
Man learning I’m not good at learning new languages, I get to the point where I have the basics of the language ex: Conditional statements, loops, functions, classes, structures, file manipulation, etc but idk what to do after that, is this where I start learning libraries cause I still get the feeling I’m not at that step yet.
Before you ask, yes I know I am heavily over thinking this2 -

I had a random thought yesterday.

Not really in work as a job, these people inspired me rather in lifestyle and thinking: (these are not quotes!!)
Richard Stallman - you can't be sure the program isn't harmful unless you see and understand the code.
Linus Torvalds - doesn't matter if you like the person or not, let the code speak for him/her.
Raymond Hettinger - there are both stupid and smart people. It doesn't matter. What matters is asking the right questions and providing clean and explaining answers. -
@allBeginners:
It's not about which language to pick or which problem to solve. It starts with thinking like a programmer.
I think that this guy educates quite well: https://youtu.be/azcrPFhaY9k

My boss uses agile development so he doesn't has to think about use cases he wants to be covered by the application.
He's just throwing in a "design" (an image that is probably created with Paint) without any further specifications and inconsistent elements, let the developer work two days on it, see the outcome, complains why it's not how he wanted it to be and then starts thinking how the feature should be integrated in the app and notices that his "requirements" from the image could not provide any advantage or usage at all for the user of the application. Asking for clarification before starting to work just leads to spongy statements or silence when he notices that he didn't think through to the end.
Sad is that this has not happened only once but is usually the way a new feature is developed...1 -

PM here. I'm having an interview with prospective junior devs next week. I want to make sure that they know a little and can learn a lot. Do you guys have any suggestions of how to ascertain that? I'm thinking simple programming exercises or something.
Again, it's not that important what they know today.14 -
I love nginx' docker container, but it always takes me 2 minutest to remember that an idle nginx container does NOT output any logs

My 1300€ Thinkpad is just a noisy and sometimes annoying laptop. It is sometimes so loud that my colleague is pissed off.
It is almost four years old and dust cleaning did not help...
I am so pissed off by this behaviour i am actually thinking of selling it and buying a macbook.......11 -
Personal Opinion:
If you/your company's goal is to achieve micro-services, kubernetes or any new shiny technology, then you are thinking it wrong.
These tools are a means to an end. They should be a solution to an issue you are facing/will certainly face. They should not be your end goal.5 -

I have a question; when I get interrupted while coding (dinner, friends etc) I'm often "stuck" in my head while just thinking about the problem I were to solve in the code. Anyone else have this? Does it have a name and any tips to "let the code go" while not coding?5 -
The mass surveillance thingy in the Netherlands is not something I want to do with, so I'm thinking of moving my droplets to London as I heard Germany might also implement something similar. I have two DO droplets that are relatively easy to transfer but I'm open to suggestions, should I move them?7

Being a Tech Co-Founder is both boon and a bane.
Boon: You know how to build it.
Bane: You just start building without thinking.
We often crave I will be using Redis😍😍, Kafka, Load Balancer, Muti Layer Neural Net
"Dude", Whatever you are building does anyone want it or not. Tell me that first.1 -
So this stupid fuck whose react code is a clusterfuck of bugs just bashed me when I said Java is better then node because of reasons...
I was literally speechless while thinking if I should humiliate her or not.
Guess life will show her because I don't give a fuck. -
Hi. I did an interview recently and failed. I could not answer this question properly.
Estimate the number of doctors needed in a town of 4million people.
I think it's more of a critical thinking problem. I dont know.
Whow knows how to explain this?32 -
boss: numbers being aside. Why is this happening 40% of the time.
me: (thinking) wtf what an idiot. wtf do you think?!
type: (politely) Well the number being wrong suggests it's *not* happening 40% of the time.
I don't know who I hate more, myself for not point out how dumb that question is. or the person asking the question. -

I really like the concept of a "hackerspace" but they are far away from my flat and after working all day I don't really wanna travel across the city for hours to try things for an hour or two because I need to catch the train on time to get at least a bit of sleep.
I'm thinking of a "digital hackerspace" where ppl can "meet" and write code or build something(?). Does something like this exist?
If it doesn't I'd really like to build that kind of thing because I'd say I'm not the only person thinking like that 😅5 -
Do some of you make a passive income from something dev related?
What are your experiences?
I’m thinking about starting a dev blog with focus on financial software, but it would be nice to do something that brings in some extra bugs. There are so many blogs, mine would probably not even be seen by anyone..4 -

I recently celebrated a rather significant birthday and it got me to thinking what's changed about me over the years.
Young me: Feared that I wasn't a supremely talented software developer and completely insecure about it.
Older me: I know I'm not a supremely talented software developer... and that's ok.1 -
My biggest dev sin is premature optimization. I'll try to produce the best possible code without the need for it to be there. I will waste my time thinking of wierd edge cases that can be handled with a simple if-else, but why not tweak the algo to handle them internally.

Dear CS students, and everyone in general
How do you deal with:
- Pressure (like having to turn in 5 homeworks and sometimes not having the time to do all of them right)

- Severe depression from thinking that you're not studying right while looking at other people studying and doing better than you, and depression in general4 -

One who thinks a dev is a dev. Not worrying about years of experience.5 -

“A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So, he loses touch with reality and lives in a world of illusions. By thoughts I mean specifically “chatter in the skull”... perpetual and compulsive repetition of words... of reckoning and calculating.
I’m not saying thinking is bad. Like everything else, it’s useful in moderation. A good servant, but a bad master - and all so called civilized peoples have increasingly become crazy and self-destructive. Through excessive thinking, they have lost touch with reality.”4 -

I'm currently thinking about Samsung A50 4GB variant4 -

so i've been playing around with this idea for some time... a relative reference frame physics engine.
why?
because in short, if it's not completely stupid (which I'm still not sure), and if it would work how I think it should/would, then it would solve most (if not all) problems current physics engines have with moving inside/on moving objects (which are inside/on other moving objects)...

I am not a very experienced developer, so naturally I don't know many fundamental things. My thinking around a lot of the necessary things is that the answer should come to me according to the need. So an oversimplified example could be, say I'm solving a Dynamic programming problem, I should not need to know the algorithm beforehand I can maybe invent it. This thinking stops me learning a lot things because I feel like then when I learn a pattern I will restrict my thought process within the knowledge I have and not think beyond it. I feel like that I am doing the dumb mistake of learning things bt heart and not understanding.
Does anyone felt the same? What your experience says about this?12 -
It's really difficult to stay sane after doing 3hrs of competitive coding plus even after trying so much your code does not run . I really wanna be good at competitive coding but I am horrible. Ahh this is irritating so many hours of thinking shit and nothing workd7

I was thinking about linux and it's security.
Many are sayin that do not require an antivirus. BUT
What if you install wine (3.0) .
And after that install a software (.exe) that contains malware. What about that!
I was thinking today, it would get inffected?2 -
Hey folks,

Finally got myself to buy a SSD for my laptop, so I was thinking about trying Ubuntu Mate...but wtf...
I like it because it is similar to Unity but stability is awful. It breaks every 5 minutes. Very not funny.1 -
Good morning devRant community, so currently im on my early morning commute to College, and it got me thinking.
So I’m very passionate about programming but i also love playing around with the Stock Markets, Are there Software Engineering positions which work with the markets? I’ve been thinking its called a “Quant” but im not too sure, Also does anyone have any possible experience within the field? What it takes to get in etc?.
I highly appreciate it! Hope you have an amazing day/night. :-)10 -
What is it with colleagues here not even thinking of making a comment in code that directly interacts with hardware.
They will write to the same register 4 times with different values, which is intentional I believe, but not bother to put one comment in there vagely explaining that it is in fact not a copy paste error...2 -
When does the bank decide to take their site down for maintenance? Payday. I'm not alone in this boat, millions of people get paid today (It's the last business day before the 15th!)
Not only can I not see what's in my account, but I can't pay the mortgage, the car payment, or a bunch of other bills.
Of all the fucking times to pick a maintenance window, somebody had to not be thinking about this.3 -
I was thinking what OS to install on my laptop, i am currently using Elementary OS and wanted to change

I believe everything has a solution. It's just not visible at the time. So I just leave that part and go home ( or work on something else if I feel like it ). It never happened that some kind of solution didn't come to my mind when I'm thinking afresh.

I was thinking about my PhD as I will get my bachelor's degree this semester.
I was searching for top universities for cybersecurity PhD.
Sure I will have to get my master first
But what is your suggestion for PhD?
I am currently in love with Berlin university but not sure if it's a right choice.1 -

I want to buy a new phone.
I value long battery-runtime and easily flashing of custom ROMs most.
ATM I'm thinking about OnePlus 7T, Pixel 3a or Fairphone 3.
Can anyone of you provide some opinions on those, or another alternative?
Note that IPhone is out of question, not only but foremost, because of money.7 -
I was thinking about installing Linux on my laptop and I was reading about the various distros for beginners and I came across Arch Linux, it seems not to be liked by this comunity. Why is it? What distro would be better?8
-

Anyone able to recommend the best place to get courses from for working towards an Azure dev cert (or possibly AWS) ?
I’m thinking udemy etc but only ones I’ve ever used are Linkedin Learning and Pluralsight.
I’m going to be paying for these personally so hopefully not too expensive but quality comes before price.3 -
I'm planing on building a custom PC and I was thinking on using Ryzen. Should I wait for the Ryzen with Vega or shoul I use the older ones ? (The Vega ones are still not available in my country )3

Its very simple to get PMs to leave you alone; have a good long talk with them about their goals, motivations, and methods. Try to understand their thinking, then preempt the visit to your desk with something to make them not come to your desk.
Or get a WFH deal and dont answer any comm requests. -
i had have thinking about a project where a developers community , work us together and meet us , like a coworking , but online , share us desktop , videoconference , real time meetups about coding , freelance or enterprise dev , share projects , but human touch around , not forum , something more social , share locations etc etc ....... it sounds cool?

Well.... Bad documented API, ehmm... thinking to fast, not noticing an id that is sent with the 'get' function... 5 hours later, 2 minute fix because I had an EUREKA moment. Fucking shitting heck, these are the fucking moments in life you want to scream your body out and kill yourself.2
-
So ranters, what distros are you using for work environment? (sorry apple fans this is for Linux) I have been using mint and thinking about venturing into arch.. But I'm not sure12

Comment 👇 #pythonprogramming vs #cprogramminglanguage
Python is fresh and demanded technology in the market but C is great for building a strong foundation. The essence of programming comes from thinking 🤔 and languages are just a medium.
If #python is a big giant means not C is outdated.10 -
Writing code and coming back to it later and not knowing what you were thinking so you just rewrite it again1

I fuck my brain with thinking about a smart way for a hourly reservation system which does not look like shit... has anyoke an idea for me?1 -
I was thinking about a cli tool, involving sending emails through smtp because its purpose.

What are some good coding buddies? I'm thinking of toys, not people. Suggestions? I need someone to talk my code through with who won't argue with me even if my code is wrong 🙃1
-
Want to change distro and wanted your advice. I'm moving away from Kubuntu mostly due to tons of issues on power management (hibernation either not actually hibernating and depletes battery or not waking up afterwards)
I'm thinking of Pop OS or MXLinux, mostly for checking out something new. Do you have any experience of these? -
“I’m just a person who types things for 1/40th of my value - and that’s life and I have no control over it - so, don’t bother expecting me to be able to discuss it... leave me alone - I was happy just not thinking... “
- people who didn’t upvote my rants
Hahahah / but not haha. Really: super depressing for them... -
Is there anyone in the whole of devRant working with VR, AR, speech or motion detection?
I keep thinking that those were just fads that disappeared, because I'm still to see a single lasting-success product.
It might be temporary, someone might invent motion control that actually works or an Alexa that does not suck (unless you speak English with an toothpaste-commercial accent), or a non-goofy AR set.
But if not a single dev in devRant is working with it, it does not seem likely.6 -
I received a job posting recently which has php in it, I decided to avoid it for multiple reasons, but it got me thinking: why do companies seriously believe that php is "easy to learn/use/pick up"? It has an horrible syntax, a lot of inconsistencies and lacks functionalities... Is there something I am not seeing?3
-
I think something people have to realize is most people have brain farts or moments of disconnect or where the brain parts that are thinking are not connecting with the language centers very well for explanation1
-
I'm thinking to buy an android phone, as a secondary device(iPhone primary), I would like to install Kali, don't care about cam specs, would like it to be cheap but not painfully slow. any suggestions?5
-
Heyoo devrant's
I'm thinking of tech...For a while
I want to launch a website!I have an idea but need something NEW!!
Any suggestions is deeply appreciated! Try not routine ideas -
Yet again I remember the opposite of wrong doing on my part
Seems I spent a few iterations completely ignorant
Others thinking these people were rightly being punished and playing along slightly thinking myself among people who weren't evil bastards
The rest of the time morally horrified and or being thieved from. Though this was mostly a stopover point. Tori and zimm liked playing fucked up head games
Life needs to continue well last past this for dear John and a happy life not more of this shit
Get him away from these psychos to speak in their mongrel language !
