Huge congrats to @linuxxx for being the first ever member of the devRant community to reach 100,000++
This is an awesome accomplishment and @linuxxx earned all of his ++ with awesome stories and has represented everything the devRant community is about while getting there.
So once again, congrats @linuxxx, and thanks for everything you have contributed to devRant!52 -
Got semi drunk and thought "Now would be a good time to implement this feature"
*Codes for 2 hours straight without compiling once*
"Done. Good night"
The next morning:
Gets up and tries out feature
*Fixes 2 syntax errors/typos*
*Tries again*
*Feature works*7 -
• Manager : WTF did you push, now it keeps crashing all the servers.
• Me : (silent, I'm trying to speak but nothing is coming out. Felt like someone in coma).
• Someone else shouts at boss : Now we now have 47 major crisis bridges.
[I went running for the door to get away from everything.]
Only to find myself rolling on the floor tangled in my bedsheets after falling from my bed. Realized it was all but a nightmare.
Went to get some water. While taking the first sip...
Me: Shit, I'm late for work AGAIN.
Running for the door again. Then stopped to think if this is all some fuckin premonition. Hurriedly went for my phone to find out it's nothing but Sunday.
I'm thinking about a career switch now. No more devops once this is over.8 -
I sent this email to client:
Hi Christine,
Can we shit this afternoon and go over the scope of work once again?
In reply she sent me this meme with few LOL emoji16 -
Today I realized an interesting thing about social media I use:
Twitter: using since 20.06.2016, likes from J.Dorsey: 0
Facebook: using since 21.11.2010, likes from M.Zuckerberg: 0
Vk.com: using since 24.10.2008, likes from P.Durov: 0
devRant: using since last Sunday, likes from @dfox : 1
Didn't notice this initially because I'm new to devRant, but today I decided to visit the About page. Then I looked at my notifications. Then once again the About page. *a lightbulb appears* xD19 -
First on the phone this afternoon and also a crapload of tickets.

Windows 10 once again held my computer at ransom! When it finally came around after the update, all it really seem to do is place Edge back on my task bar. No... Bad Microsoft, I don't use or want Edge.6

*on the phone with a client*
Important detail: in Dutch we call a colon a "double point" and a semicolon a "point comma".
Me: go to {url} and put double point followed by {something} behind it.
Client: *tries for 5 minutes, suggestions forth and back*
Me: how did you type the double points?
Client: I typed two points. (..)
The level of retardness I thought existed got worse once again.
At that moment the open window seemed like a veeery good option 😭15 -
It becomes really creepy when an anonymous 'number' calls you every day at the same time for a few weeks.
Picked up once, random noise and a hangup after two seconds.
It's time to install a root call blocker again :/16 -
Thank you devRant for making me feel like a teenager once again! Every time I get a ++ it makes me ever so slightly happier!5

Hello world, I'm a 20 year-old CS student and I've been following you all from the shadows for a year now. I finally decided to join you, so here I am! I've got to say that I love this app and the community, so I'm happy to be part of it now. I'm currently on holidays, but I can't wait to share some good ol' rants once the uni starts again!

"Don't worry about the little things."
- Programmer, never.
Spent way too much time debugging and the issue was a missing exclamation mark - once again.
It's always the little things!6 -
I once created a pop up video modal for a client.
A 'bug' was then logged:
"When you click and open the video modal, and then close the tab when finished, it closes the whole site and you have to start over again."

If some of you missed this gem in stackoverflow answers, I bring it once again!

Me *downloading some weird linux distro to test in VirtualBox - I only do this once a month for like 1 hour*
my brother: Oh my god! Are you downloading something again? Moooom he is downloading something non-stop
every day:
my brother *watching some series/YouTube videos/playing ping-sensitive multiplayer games - all the fucking time, everything he does all day is this + eating and sleeping*
me *retrying multiple times to load anything, including devRant* 😒😠9 -
Even though my ikea rack has served me well, I am happy with my newest server room update.

My own programming language (still WIP). I got SO excited when I found recursion worked, I even got the simplest factorial recursive function wrong. And then again, once arrays worked, bubble sort it was. I shit you not, once I saw all the numbers printed in order, I had to stand up and walk or I would have jumped out of the chair in excitement.
In case someone is interested, I use LLVM for the backend.4 -
For fucking once in my life I decide to go very early to bed so I can be 100% clear in my head for today's meetings. What happens is the following:
1. going to bed at 10pm.
2. Falls asleep relatively fast (yay)
3. Wakes up at 1am
4. Has a major headache and gets dizzy when I get up to go take a leak
5. Grabs a huge glass of water
6. Goes to sleep again
7. Wakes up at 3am with major headache and gets dizzy when I get up again.
8. Grabs another huge glass of water and goes back to sleep.
It's now 4:36am and I'm wide awake, with no headache, and no ability to sleep apparently. F... M... L!!!7 -
Microsoft are getting a lot of pats on the back today for open sourcing MS-DOS. It might have meant something before FreeDOS was so well established and mature, but now... really, who gives a shit? Even more significant, they already "open sourced" it before, just not hosted on GitHub.
Here's the thing. Going open source is like losing your virginity. You only get to do it once, you can't take it back, and you certainly can't claim to be doing it again just because you're using a different host.9 -
Me: Hello. I'm from dept. ABC. My system isn't working.
IT: Have you tried logging OFF & ON again?
Me: (Let me rephrase) No the system isn't turning ON 😅
IT: Before I come over to your desk, can you try restarting once? 🤓
Me: (Motherfuck..) 🙂5 -
I once explained to my teacher that i had trouble getting started with programming after a longer break and wondered if he had any smart ways to get into programming again. He smiled and explained that:
"There are no great ways to get into programming, the trick is to never really get out of it".
Best tip I've ever gotten.1 -
And once again:
18:00: *writing a Mandelbrot algo in glsl for the GPU*
19:00: "This should be working now..."
22:00: "why isn't it working??!"
22:30: "Oh my uniform vectors become zero when they arrive on the GPU"
01:00: "Oh. I uploaded them as matrices..."
I wasted about 4 fucking hours because I suck dick.5 -
Algorithms strike again :D
By the way I really much agree on both rants. People asking questions that they not even once typed into Google. Disturbing my workflow every 5 minutes...1 -
I have those conversations with my coworkers about once a day. We use Linux at work and I am the only one with any real Linux experience.
C: I have a problem! I tried and googled everything already! Come help me...
M: *slowly walks over to their PC*
M: *copy-pastes the error into Google*
M: *clicks the first result*
M: *presses two buttons*
*everything works again*
M: So you tried Google already, have you?
When I leave there (it's a PhD position and I'm almost done) they will probably crash and burn...7 -
God damnit, I have this too often. Something works in my mind no matter how often I run through it again and again but I've got no clue how to test it for real which brings me into a "mental deadlock" state aaaand then I lose all my programming motivation at once.
Having this right now, fucking annoying.10 -
Final exams are next week and I'm behind on studying...
If I uninstall devRant, I'll install it back. If I block it using clearlock, I'll find a way to bypass it.
I remember once I accidentally found a way to use devRant on multi window view. I might figure out how to do it again.
So... If you see me on devRant yell at me to get off. I'll be bitter at first, but appreciate it later :)
Oh, and feel free to be as mean as you want. The meaner you are, the less likely I'll go back on.22 -
Once again, the earth has accomplished the 30th full round since I was born.

Two years ago: company exec (Mac fan) buys a Surface Pro to show off our .NET application to customers as he travels. Hands it to me (I build releases) and I iron out a few Win 8 bugs since we'd always used Win 7 before. Get it set up, get to like the device a little, he takes it home... and returns it within 24 hours because he didn't mesh well with Windows. (Again, Mac user.)
8 months later he buys a Surface Pro again. I install our latest release, verify that everything is working as expected with hardware we normally don't use, and give him a controlled setup that will just work when he's at a customer site. Once again, he returns the Surface within 24 hours because he can't get used to Windows.
At least we verified Windows 8 compatibility, I guess.1 -
Deutsche Bahn once again.
Deutsche Bahn and I will never be friends I guess.
I'm at a train station where my train arrives only once per hour.
As if that's not enough time to wait already, the first train got canceled.
I was like "Ok, that's Deutsche Bahn. That can happen (and will happen always). Guess that I will wait for another hour".
Minutes before the planned arrival of the second train, they announced that the second train isn't coming either.
I have been at a fucking train station for bloody 3 hours approximately.
Let's wait and see, if my train will ever arrive.
Honestly, thinking about buying camping tools to sleep at this train station and go to university and come back to this place just because of this problem.18 -
I am once again reminded how much of a clusterfuck C++ as a whole is.
They recently (C++17) added this cool new attribute called nodiscard.
You can put it on a function like this
[[nodiscard]] bool writeMessage(...)
and the compiler will check if the returned value was discarded or not, and give a warning accordingly.
Pretty neat if you're returning an error code and you want to enforce that it gets checked, right?
Except it doesn't work in template classes.
It just doesn't do anything there.12 -
Today, I reached a new level of laziness.
I lied down to watch a movie and I was too lazy to copy the movie from my external hard drive which was in the other side of the bed.
What did I do? I've downloaded the movie once again and watched.3 -
Not my own bug, but at our sister company there is a PHP developer who almost gets fired twice a year, once when the clocks go forward and once when they go back again. He can't program dates well, or use stack overflow apparently.3

Once I quit this job, I'm never getting a Mac again. I know many like working on one but for me it just gets in my way, it's naggy, the window manager is clunky, homebrew is a crappy package manager compared to pacman and good do I miss focus follow mouse. This is the third time that I've used macos for insert a year and it has actually gotten less pleasant over time.8

*The fanfars of the damned are beating the eardrums, the ghostly wind of the past shudders through your hair. The echoes of the ones who came before pull you into the abyss as the messenger opens his mouth to speak once again.*

*Explosions can be heard in the distance as the great war of nations that shall shape the world for generations to come erupts in full force.*5 -
In one of our webinterfaces you could swap between users once you logged in by changing the user in the link.
Not intended but our support is using this "feature" frequently because then they don't have to log in again when helping another client so it's not planned to be fixed4 -

wtf. 2 days into a relationship and she is asking me to buy her a phone ( I can buy her a phone if i want to, but within todays of her telling me yes, after frustrating me for a month when asking her out). Once again I have sucessfully entered into another relationship that will definetly end bad.9

Data Engineering cycle of hell:
1) Receive an "beyond urgent" request for a "quick and easy" "one time only" data need.
2) Do it fast using spaghetti code and manual platforms and methods.
3) Go do something else for a time period, until receiving the same request again accompanied by some excuse about "why we need it again just this once"
4) Repeat step 3 until this "only once" process is required to prevent the sun from collapsing into a black hole
5) Repeat steps 1 to 4 until it is impossible to maintain the clusterfuck of hundreds of "quick and simple" processes
6) Require time for refactoring just as a formality, managers will NEVER try to be more efficient if it means that they cannot respond to the latest request (it is called "Panic-Driven Development" or "Crappy Diem" principle)
7) GTFO and let the company collapse onto the next Data Engineering Atlas who happens to wander under the clusterfuck. May his pain end quickly.2 -
DELETE FROM Invoices;
I am on test, right? OH SH!T
had a recent backup tho and no data were lost.
Happened once and never again. I was still pretty much junior in a senior position to be fair 😅6 -
Idea was to make a little helper utility to be used once (only for myself, not client). But, I've kept adding layers of functionality over layers of functionality ... Long story short - this monstrosity (UI is bad, code not that much) was used for 10+ years (again, only by myself).
Finally, personal embarrassment was too big, so I took wooden stake and monster passed away. All related files deleted (but not before one final screenshot).6 -
I like how I transitioned from learning Java to Javascript because I thought they were related in sone way.
When my teacher first introduced Javascript, he told us this is NOT your grandfather's javascript. Next thing he told us was 'What is this?' My seatmate and I looked at each other perplexed. My teacher once again said 'What IS this?'. It turns out we needed to first learn about the context of 'this' -_-
That moment when you discover Java was a lie o_o3 -
Dear Teacher.
Thank you for forcing me to use a windows computer for your lecture, even though i have told you that i don't have any windows machine.
Thank you for forcing me use 3DS max for your simple fuckin trash that needs 20 minutes of work, whilst i could have used gladly Blender.
Thank you for making me deal with that shit that i won't touch again in my life again just because you teach a simple lecture that isn't cleary for computer science which i and many people study, but for people who deal with graphics.
What more joyful i would have done rather than downloading 8GB of software to use once in my life
Thank you, you piece of shit.13 -

I gave this damn fly three chances. Once, when it came into my room to leave on its own. Once when I captured it and let it go outside of my window. And once when I found it on one window, opened the other and shooed it with a shoe to leave.
And it came back.
And that was it. My mercy was over.
So I'm sorry it's dead now. It fought bravely. But nobody gets to live in my house without paying me rent or hugs.
RIP fly.
Also, fucks sake, it is the fly season again? Urghhhhh!10 -
Once again, I was lazily internetting and then there it was..
Some wild JavaScript lurking behind an ad.
God bless ads, God bless JavaScript.20 -
Hi fellow code indenters,
I am a tab indenter myself because each dev on the same project can decide how much the indentation is. Some prefer 4, some 2, some prefer both depending on language.
Now I already asked a few space indenters here why spaces. Because I never heard a good argument for using spaces instead of tabs. Each time I asked I didn't get an answer.
So this time once again: why would you use spaces over tabs for indentation?
I want to make a good decision and for that I need arguments for both.40 -
Once you've been writing code for so long, being excited writing code can go away. I still find that I get the rush when working with a new language or technology. It feels good to be a beginner again 🙂3

Grandma: so how do I scan that thingy in order to comnect to the wifi?
Me: I already told you that's something that you have to do only once. Just turn on wifi and it'll connect automatically
G: But I already turned it on and it's not connecting. Now tell me how to scan that again
Me: Are you sure that you did?
G: Yes
*Checks*
Me: It's disabled...
*enables wifi*
G: Oh, thanks, it's working now.
Literally every time she wants her phone to connect to the wifi.2 -
I once made a .less files of 400 lines and today I redid it completely,
The file is now only 40 lines long and readable again1 -
-- Once upon a time in a long forgotten country, a most wise wizard created a magic software that would replace all TODO comments in PHP files with actual code...

Me -- Hm, okay mister, you got me. Let's see.
Me again -- Once upon a time in the far-off country of Whatthefuckia...
Man I'm so proud of my son.1 -
Once again, another weekend I promised myself to start programming projects, only to step through a worm hole and wake up on Monday.

The joys of using overpriced enterprise software...
Me: Hey, I tried connect to the server, but I'm getting a "connection refused" error. Is it really running.
Other: hmm, I'll check
Other: The host restarted, but I'll get the software up again, no problemo
Other: I started the server again, but there's, but it's throwing errors while initializing. Time to write customer support
And then you get that premium customer support that think we don't know how to use their software at times. And once they realize we do, they don't know much better either. And once they realize we know how to use it there are 3 possibilities:
* They need our help to debug stuff before knowing what is going on
* They need to release a new version and accidentally break backwards compatibility and create enough work for us to burn through the clients contact hours
* They provide helpful advice (secret ending)
These fuck don't even release a proper changelog for their software nor their manuals.1 -
Broken app's cousin (they do similar things are share devs) is now broken again too.
On two calls at once. Yay.
THESE PEOPLE NEED TO BE REPLACED4 -

Oh well, neighbours having playtime again.2 -
Google Chrome scans private files on the computer without mentioning the user and without the possibility do disable this "feature". Google never announced this anywhere.
Someone (Kelly Shortridge, @swagitda_ on Twitter) found this randomly and confronted Google. It answered that this was only an AV scan and wasn't done more than once a week.
Well, THAT'S why I use Firefox. I don't trust Google, and again and again it gives more and more reasons for this mistrust.4 -
"For me, it means..."
For me it was not one specific meeting, but rather a series of meetings with a customer over some years.
It was like the movie "groundhog day", it was the same all over again.
We had this technical term, and our customer had his own definition of what it meant and what it's supposed to be. No need to say that his definition did not match the one the engineers and developers of the world had agreed on.
At least a dozen times, i convinced him, but as soon as the meeting ends, it's all reset and we start at zero next time with his new or old definition of what a definition should mean. Sometimes i was just sick and tired of it so i let him explain how it is while i just stared into the void. Didn't matter he told me once, it will happen again next time again, like it never happened before.1 -
I dont work weekends ever. And I dont bring my work home with me, once I finish for the day, Im finished. Even if there is a deadline looming or something is due for a weekend release. I will only work when Im in the office. And I wont work extra unpaid hours. All that does is create unrealistic expectations from your employer and clients. I did it once and learned that there was no point and I could have just gone home and it would have been fine. Im never doing it again.3

seagull management

Spent an entire day just compiling a kernel with audio codecs for my cherrytrail laptop, first on my server for 9ish hours, then on my laptop, ended up deleting it all and starting over, because the final folder was 20+ gigs big (without modules) and the next instruction was to transfer all those files to what is a 32gb laptop, so I thought I fucked up, now searching more, it seems I just need the vmlinuz file once it compiled, I guess I'll compile it all again...13
-
So this phallus decided to make my day a night mare, I coded the Interface in separate class for each distinct services, He just told me to re write it to one class, before he don't understand it.
I wrote documentation, he said it is not professional. and now the fucking codes are containing redundancies.
For instance if he use my method, all he need is call my function once, and call it everywhere. But now the code is messy as fuck, calling the same thing over and over again which can be done by separate it to a function once, and reuse it.4 -
Users.
For once they used their brains.
For once they thought about repercussions of clicking on inconspicuous links in emails.
And naturally it happened when I sent out a legitimate email to stop their shopping sprees.
But then again, I would rather have paranoid users than clicky-go-lucky.3 -
Once again, answered my own question in stack overflow. That my problems are so unique, it makes me lonely even in a dev forum.2

Okay, so today I've taught a colleague how to use a simple office ruler to measure AWS server's CPU usage :) We needed to figure out whether CPU% spikes correlate with error message in logs an d latency spikes. Once again a ruler was the perfect tool for the job.
P.S. no, CPU% spikes did not correlate to errors in logs1 -
Sorta dev related.
I work at a service desk for an automotive supplier.
We've once hab out entire mobile phone system crash and for whatever reason, it won't let the phones connect, if there are more than 50 phones trying to connect at the same time. Kind of a problem if there are 400+ phones trying to connect.
My colleagues showed me what to do in order to get one phone to connect to our system.
It was basically: enter some invalid data on out webinterface, save, enter the correct data again and safe again.
It was too stupid for me. So i hacked an AutoIt script together in about 15 minutes, and let it run for the next half an hour. Showed it to my colleagues, they were excited and I went and got a coffee. -
So after exactly 30 minutes of building a basic interpreter (yes I'm back on the interpreter wagon) in python, I have once again come to the conclusion that python can go fuck itself with its backwards and inconsistent syntax with needlessly over worked and backwards data structures...
Would rather work in fucking COBOL at this stage...3 -
We got a different programming teacher for today. He's shit. He can't even efficiently code a simple C# program that prints out three numbers as sorted ascendingly. WHAT THE FUCK12

Some intellect at Apple thought it would be helpful for macOS to reopen all my previous applications at once after restarting from an improper shutdown. Thank God it's much less annoying nowadays due to SSD load times.
The worst was when Safari was the cause, so Apple reopened it to the same page, and it crashed again. 👏👏2 -
devRant bugreport
Im getting more and more bugs in devRant on my LG G2.
- Links cannot be opened
- profiles can not be viewed
- double tapping a rant opens the rant twice (tapping five times opens it 5 times) instead of voting it up.
- once in a while an opened rant shows up again under all the comments (with all comments as well). When this happens its exactly the ammount of comments.
Im not sure where to report this. If @dfox could take a look at this?
Gonna look up my android version in a sec. (edit version: 4.4.2)9 -
Aaaaand my team leader once again worked directly on the DB without touching the code, so I can't reproduce his local DB on my machine.
JUST WHY4 -
- I need heat shrink tubes
- go to aliexpress, find the one set I need, order
- receive them to my PO, use a few of them
- I needed parking sensors
- to to aliexpress, find the set I need, order
- the parcel arrives in my country, on its way to my PO
- Today I visit a random site
Conclusion: AI is great at knowing what I have already bought and suggesting the exact same items I've ordered. Because if you've ordered them once you're likely to order them again, right?2 -
Recruiter: hey I see you once worked in Utah. Boy do I have the job for you. In Utah.
Me: I no longer live in Utah. In fact I fled Utah 16 months into a 24 month contract because that place sucks. I haven't been back in over two years. So I guess what I am saying is no. I do not want your job offer. Please never contact me again unless it's for 6 figures and I don't have to move.2 -
Always keep trying, never give up on the bugs you have.even if you have to start over again.
Someone once asked me:
Why do we fall?
I answered him:
To rise up again even stronger.4 -
If finally happened. My cats broke me down.
After years of spotty internet, in which I couldn't resolve websites, to which the solution always was to reach down and push the RJ45 jack with the broken off clip that connects my router to my pihole back in, because my cats pulled it out once again.
They made me do. They finally made me do it. After all those years. Today, my cat pulled it out like ten times in a row... So I finally did it. I walked over in the other room, grabbed a new cable and plugged that one it.
Try that again, cat. I dare you. Try it again!1 -
I feel fucked, I feel fucked right up in the ass.
Remember that app I had to do to get the job? I found out the other candidates weren't even able to install Android Studio and that their deadline was postponed. And that they weren't able to complete the app.
I did everything with a really good design, solid programming, even added animations and made it so the recyclerview loads 15 items at a time while you scroll down smoothly. I. DID. EVERYTHING IN ONE DAY. I missed a good night of sleep.
I didn't get the job. They gave it to a fucker that was a web developer. I saw his app. It was really crappy (I'm not being petty or malicious, it was really bad from a dev point of view and a user point of view).
I feel. Disappointed. in this unfair world. And honestly I feel disappointed to the point that I don't even know if I should be a developer anymore. I feel betrayed by the hopes and the good feeling I got from the oportunity.8 -
WhatsApp devs suck so bad.. they won't let me use it in Chromium 65+ because "It works with Google Chrome 36+".
Good job once again fuckwits.16 -

Came to Uni today expecting to learn something, but once again we have a guest lecturer from a certain large programmer farm with questionable treatment of workers trying to head hunt. We're literally just watching their ads.
I should have just stayed at home and done something useful. -

"Wow this community is surely active! Better check frequently to keep up!"

So, how is your day/night so far?25 -
There was this random image on devRant.
Yepp, it is Brainfuck once again.
For the bored devs among us and for the ones who seek a challenge to learn and have fun... here it is. Solve it on paper like I did in the first comment.19 -
Here's my flow:
1. Sit at my desk and contemplate the Universe
2. Sort out specifics by pacing back and forward
3. Draw like a mad man
4. Copy an old project and change a few lines of code
5. Go home happy that the Universe is safe once again

At least Linux is honest.
Maybe it's a sign that I've been working too long again... but it's nice to see some blantant, unobfuscated, basic descriptions once in awhile. I had to lookup syntax for a specific param... it's these little things that pleasantly break through and offer brief respite.7 -
Why don't you apple tell me all my fucking errors at once instead of waiting to submit again the next day?
It's been 3 days now 😡😡😡😡2 -
You know as a FOSS developer with no company affiliation the "I am once again asking for your financial support" meme is truer every second
I'm sad and broke please help7 -

time is the only asset that has no price and that is something that we all have.
time is worth more than anything and anyone, even money. once time is wasted, it can never be bought again.
and guess what
the only thing that has no price, is the thing that is given to our lives for free.
each day you are deposited 86400 seconds for free.

So I'm in charge of planning how the projects are gonna be dealt with from now on and today my boss just emailed a list of changes to another dev, with the following fuck ups:
- I'm not copied
- He already did most of it
- It doesn't even exists on our Trello board
- Obviously not thought out and unplanned Bullshits that might change once again...
I was so fucking pissed that I didn't have a reaction, I'm absolutely gonna talk to him tomorrow first thing...2 -
Is it just me, or are the media / journalists once again putting a stupidly unfair pessimistic spin on that SpaceX launch?
"SpaceX rocket launches but explodes shortly into flight"
"Musk's SpaceX big rocket explodes on test flight"
"SpaceX rocket explosion: None injured or killed"
They've said time and time again, it's the first test of a massively complex rocket that's bigger than anything that's ever gone before it, and success is just defined as "getting off the launch pad" and collecting data. They did that and then some.
But instead of spreading excitement about the data, the fact it launched, that it's a world first, etc. - it's all doom and gloom, implying that the whole thing was a failure and people could have died 🙄
And people wonder why I have a low opinion of journalists.15 -
My boss keeps touching and poking my colleague's and my laptop screens. Our laptops are both Mac and are not company property. My colleague once told him to stop. He said sorry, but after 5 minutes, he did it again. It's so annoying. Why can't people understand that if it's not a touchscreen, they should keep their manners and not touch it?12

If I'm coding with earphones on and you need help, feel free to tap me on the shoulder.

That bad feeling when you leave a project aside for a few weeks and then when you finally decide to continue it you don't understand the code you wrote...
I'm searching a solution for something I already solved once again. FUCK!5 -
I was giving a demo for a university project. It was a simulation of a bunch of healthcare robots in a 3D world.
When the demo started, two of the robots attempted to path through the front door at the same time and promptly got stuck on each other. We were allowed to manually unstick them, so we did so.
Once they were going again, they decided to not to turn down the hallway like they were supposed to. Instead, they drove through one of the walls of the house and continued until they disappeared of the screen.
We never saw them again.1 -
If anyone is using the fall creators update of Windows 10 and wondering why they are not receiving notifications from devRantron, it's a known problem with Electron and Windows 10 FCU.
I will update the app again once the issue in Electron has been fixed.
I also recently released an update which fixes the "Post Comment" textarea becoming out of focus when you receive a new notifications. And some other bugfixes as well.3 -
Well that's it folks,

I once had a nightmare because my boss suddenly appear in my dream. After that I woke up and can't sleep again, so I'm checking my mail and there is a new mail from him.. On 2am.

I wake up to a mail saying my website is down. I visit my website and for some reason i get a 403 all of a sudden.
I get out of bed, turn on my pc, go do my stuff. When im done, it turns out Windows strikes once again! -
You think NORMAL updates are slow?
I have to install these twice, once from the desktop then again at boot-time!
(gift desktop for my uncle, but we're almost out of bandwidth for the LAN network for the month... had to go sit outside (yes, OUTSIDE) a McD's so I could have both power and network access. It was 2° outside.)7 -

I'm now feeling much better about leaving my job, since i found out they are absolutely fucked:
- They're realizing once again that my peer wasn't doing anything and that i was the one picking up the slack.
- The kid they thought they could abuse this time doesn't actually mind missing deadlines, so they have a shitton of backlog.
- The colleague that used to babysit everyone into doing their job is finally relevant again because he's having to do that again.
- The good climate we had is fully gone now, they're killing themselves and the management is on top of them constantly4 -
Once again, I have to go with the guy that, after seeing my horrible (I can't highlight this enough) code, decided that even I wasn't hopeless, and went on teaching me the basics of software engineering, top-down design and unit testing. All of this in two days, but it gave me the motivation to work on it, and look at me now: I'm a devRanter :')

Do not trust Unity Collab.
Been using unity collab as a VCS for months on a project, regularly saving the files, working well.
Today i decided to refactor some code but lost track of some things, so i reverted to a version i checked in 2h before.
Unity replaced my files with the stable build back then, except... half of the files were missing. of course no undo functionality.
months of work were simply not saved in collab. no version had these files, i did modify them regularly and they never caused collab issues.
how can a company not make the vcs they add for their main product work to its minimal requirements?!
Im not sure how i could motivate myself to fix this mess. fuck this trash company, cant have a single project without major issues.2 -

So in just a matter of minutes my job security has crashed and any week could be my last again all because my jobs head office decided to change everyones positions in management...
So once again I'm back to square one in yet another useless fucking job search with barely anything to offer other than 5 years of retail experience and 3 years of IT support... Fan-fucking-tastic, would almost be more survivable to just go on centre link at this point -,- -
After having my soul suck away by "corporate", I installed VS code on my Windows 10 gaming machine.
Now, I have a pretty hardcore dev setup on my MacOS (it's unix-based and it's good, so stop the hate). I'm talking about fully automatized Rakefile that will provision it from scratch: vim, macvim, tmux, iterm configs, 15+ brew tools, 15+ brew-cask tools, themes, plugins, etc.
Installing VS Code, Node and MongoDB on Windows, just for the fun and giggles, and not having any of my hardcore tools, made me feel like... it's something silly and fun again. I'm once again that softcore developer with no stress and no constant self-reminder to improve workflow effectiveness.
Made me a little happy.
Checkout this picture, this is my Windows 10's "tmux" lol3 -
"Help" messages that are only shown once are not so helphul.
Some software and websites have help pop-ups and tooltips that are only displayed on the first use and then never again. There is no option to show it again.
That is a terrible idea, because the user might want to see it again as a reminder.
Showing something to the user only once means expecting the user to memorize it all at once.9 -
A customer once wanted buttons that would close the mask in an interface where the only way to close the mask was to click a default "OK" button. 🤔
So in the end we implemented a script on the customer's buttons that would send a calculated number of multiple keypresses of tab, tab, tab and finally enter on the default button. 🤑
It is still running in production and I will never ever touch it again! 😁 -
Making scripts for custom physics is fun. One moment, the object gets stuck on the ground. The next, it shoots off into the far distance.
Lesson of the day? Don't be an idiot for once, stop, grab a notebook, Google some formulas and think like a human being before messing around with the script again.2 -
Newb rant: So you're telling me that I could've been accessing the freaking terminal right inside of Android Studio!?!? Thanks Udacity for once again stringing me on for freaking ever alt tabbing back and forth from Android Studio to the Terminal!!4

I'm wondering if recruiters are just as irritating everywhere or that this is just the shitty situation we have in the Netherlands.
I was once called by an unknown number and heard a typical recruiter story. Since i never heard of or spoke to this person i kindly asked where he'd get my information from. Since mr, Recruiter didn't answer and just kept selling his great position i hung up.
He called back.
I picked up the phone again and he told me there were connection issues. I once again asked where he found my number. And again he just acted like he didnt hear me and sells his great position.
Hangs up and blocks the number. Go f(...) yourself damn recruiter!7 -

Best way to learn something new?
You keep repeating it wrongly until you are blue in the face, the whole world has gone red and the sweet release of death sounds favorable to your current dilemma.
Then, if you are lucky, you get it right out of the many many failed attempts.
But, what you have learned is far greater than getting it right once. You've learned many ways not to do it again. -
Once again, I have bitten off more than I can chew. Agreed and agreed on every side project that came along and now I have so many at once I can’t handle2

When you realize devRant's SEO is pretty decent and you were getting doxxed from your old account so you change your name to fullstackclown 🤡

On a previous job, my coworkers were jealous because I started going out for lunch some days of the week instead of staying with them at the office kitchen. So every time I went out, I came back to find some kind of small prank, and also a sign reading "Lunch Break Maffia Attacks Again". Once they made garlands by glueing/taping together a lot of sauce packets (mayonnaise, ketchup, and so on) in different patterns and decorated my whole box with them.

Linux.
I love you and hate you at the same time. If something breaks with the boot sequence, usually it involves using a live USB to fix the existing installation, which I directly did once I got a kernel panic.
Checked out the hard disk uuids (I was partitioning), tried chrooting but couldn't get further. Then, I booted again into the faulty Linux installation and the frikkin page said I had to run fsck on my harddrive manually. Did that in the handy provided terminal and guess what, it boots again.
Linux, you can't help people who assume issues, like me. I still like you though3 -

So once again if you want to buy a Google branded Chromebook and you aren't in the centre of the universe that is America you're shit out of luck...
To get last year's pixelbook that is $999 US in Australia I have to fork out $3000, no word on importing the pixel slate but as always America is the greatest, you get everything and everywhere else can get fucked I guess....
Why can't tech companies just realise that other countries want things too?!5 -
Once again, we delivered our semester project and this time, we added working concurrency to an existing functional language compiler, which is pretty cool. But I'd probably be more happy if I had been developing more on the compiler than once again being stuck writing the fucking paper because none would be arsed to write it otherwise...

Once again, due to poor management, I find myself exporting svgs from Figma, saving them as pngs, and importing them into our application... (remember I'm a developer, NOT a designer)
Don't we have a design team who can export the needed assets for a feature?
"Noooooo fullstackclown can do all of that himself! He's an expert!!!"

Once I wrote a shell script to solve a problem. Then I thought "now I have to rewrite it in a REAL language". So I did it in Go. But then I got bored and left it to rot in my gh. I picked it up again today and made another rewrite, but now in node. What the actual fuck4

Is it possible to have a midlife crisis at 27?
The "software biz" swallowed me up and except for money and a career I don't have anything.
Turned down multiple management positions because I dont wanna deal with other people, I just wanna be challenged while being let alone

@dfox
There's one thing I hate about devrant...
While I'm browsing posts I can't check back for my posts or exit the app or I'll have to scroll down again (gets messy after like 50)
That means I just stop watching for the rest of the day.
Suggestions:
3rd button to mark as seen and don't show on post lists
Add a mark on last seen post so it will continue there when we return to browsing.
Thank you for this community once again9 -
It feels like recruiters do not even bother taking a look at your cv, "the third page", your website and your gitlab projects.
Why is that?7 -
@dfox
Just a suggestion, when scrolling down on a user's profile, their user information should scroll up too along with the 'rants/+1's/comments' tabs and then those tabs stay fixed while the user information hides. Sort of like what Twitter does
There's not much room to view the actual content with all the user information in the way. Of course once we scroll back up, it will then reveal the user info again
:-)4 -
Thank you Micro$oft once again for your updates. Woke up this morning, logged on to my laptop and the keyboard layout is again changed to something else and touchpad settings have been reset to shit.
Thanks for doing this again and again and again. I really need my Windows to have the latest cantonese fonts and blind people support. -
How to take breaks?? Whenever I have something urgent to do, once I'm finished I can't get back to work quickly. I need a lot of time before diving into work again.
This way I can't keep myself productive.4 -
I fucked up my MySQL installation...
AGAIN!!
Whenever I really feel like programming in my free time (which became really rare), I fuck something up and spend half of the night fixing it. Once it’s fixed I’m done, don’t wanna do anything anymore..
I should just start programming and set up the infrastructure afterwards.. at least I would get to do some programming then..9 -
I tried to get this trainwreck of a middleware running again. Generations of imbecile devs turned this once ambitious project into a dumpster fire. I had some feeble hopes. Wrote a little framework to get this braindead architecture back on its track. BUT EVERY PULL REQUEST I GET TO REVIEW SHOWS THEY DON'T CARE. FML! Why am I even trying. I should have known these morons just want to pour gasoline onto an already blazingly burning software. GODDAMMIT SHOW SOME ENGINEERING SPIRIT. Why are you even in this industry in the first place?1

The number of scripters and 'data scientists' that call themselves developers will increase, the true art of development will become sidelined and the world's code will become progressively more bloated and inefficient as the rift between hardware and software widens to an echoey chasm.
Then quantum processors will come along, requiring new logic, languages and practices, and once again the true developers will rise up and pave the way for a bunch of entitled, know-it-all and self-promoting QuarkaScripters to come along decades later and pretend like they invented programming. -
ok I'll say it once again -

It still works better than the thing I'm currently dealing with.10 -
A Twitter API issue is allowing people to (once again) bootloop iPhones and iPads with the text parser. This was just submitted to Twitter's staff, I don't see anyone talking about it yet. Disable notifications or uninstall and use the mobile site.15

once again your daily reminder that software is no exception: it's about how you appear and talk, not the actual work you get done or competance
this is why i'm not worried by technology or aRtiFiciAl InTeLLiGenCE taking over - there is so much bullshit politics and idiot "emotional" choices that in fact rule the career / industrial environment, not actual consideration of improving workflows or efficiency7 -
Team Leader, once again, wagered I was wrong on a technical thing

I've finally quit my job today! It's been too long a time in the making. I was absolutely terrified but turned it into a positive discussion (considering the circumstances).
Looking forward to jumping into the interview grind once again, to return after a short sabbatical. It won't be pretty. Shitty jobs are abundant. Recruiters who know jack shit are incoming. Brace yourselves. Here's to finding something worthwhile! Cheers2 -
Just found out the reason for these extremely useless "Script error." errors we're getting being so useless is, once again, CORS. 😡
"Hey, something went wrong in an iframe. I'm not allowed to tell you what went wrong, or where, but trust me some shit is broken *somewhere*. But you have to figure it out yourself."
If cross-origin blocking were a person I'd kick him in the nuts just for being such a fucking dick all the time.2 -
Started at a new college once again after a long pause.
And I have to admit that I suck at basic stuff like algebra. Shit...
I'm putting a lot of time to understand things, but it feels like the knowledge just fades away. Starting to doubt myself...
Not hoping for anyone to support me either, just felt like posting so that I won't keep thinking about it and giving myself bad vibes.7 -
Aaaand I did it again T_T
Installed knockd for some reason it wasn't working well, couldn't unlock the port and guess what, internet disconnected for five minutes ==> My SSH session closed and I am locked out of my VPS :')
What is even worse Scaleway doesn't have a root user password when creating the server it uses a pre-entered ssh key that I put in my account, so I was pretty much locked out.
But I was able to remove it, they have custom scripts for booting so I was able to fireup a shell session during boot and removed knockd
Either I fail at using Linux or I really need to work on my self lol2 -
Once again tried to switch from iOS to Android. I love the freedom and all but the problem is that the freedom ends just when you are about to reach perfection.
It's like having amazing sex and just when you are reaching an orgasm, your partner gets a headache and you have to finish by doing everything yourself.
So I'll continue with iOS - doing it in the dark missionary style. Not as exciting, but at least I know what I'm getting and somekind of satisfaction is guaranteed.3 -
If Jetbrains does _not_ release a new product every three months, a random employee gets thrown into an active volcano by HR.
But no worries, they have done it once again and are safe for yet another sprint! Say hello to Writerside, a feeble attempt to copy Obsidian MD: https://jetbrains.com/writerside/5 -
Today I accessed DevRant and once again I've only seen posts that were unrelated to development. Politics, anti-activism, american stuff that only americans know, and so on. Since I think the community enjoys this content now, I think it's time for me to leave, after 6+ years here.
It's been a pleasure!9 -

DISCLAIMER: don’t read before going to sleep!
~23.15 power cut, street wide. Solved by switching back plong.
23.48 : I heard multiple times a loud sound, like if someone is trying to break a window or so. So, get out of room, go to hall, light is on there. Continue, ready with phone to call 112. Reaches living, kitchen. Finds grandfather that’s fixing something.
EDIT: 00:19 The water installation started one again I felt scared....
Awesome start of the vacation lol
Maybe I should just go to sleep.
To be honest, I was really scared after that power cut that this was a real thing. Fortunately it wasn’t... That once again proves the developer life, working at night, can be hard.7 -
Me: We need to have a developer on our core product
*We fork our core product from a private repo for new projects
Management: No.
Me: But imma die 5years early from stress and anger overdose of fixing the same problems over and over again in every new project we do and still hit deadlines which didn't account for them when we could fix them once and maintain our core product
Management: everything is fine. Lalalalalala
Me: *wonder why every senior dev has left in last few years*1 -

As somebody who works in the industry, 2FA is a great idea, we need to do it more.
As a user, fuck 2FA, I ain't have time for that shit, if you make me type my screen lock once again I will throw my computer out of the window.8 -
Don't you love when you start feeling down because you once again shelve/abandon yet another project because you simply don't know where to start and can't decide how things should be done.
Why can't I seem to get a project off the ground without it looking like total ass!2 -
Smart me.. Updated OS X from 10.10 to the ‘new’ 10.12 just before leaving on my vacation. I’m currently at the boarding gate, wanting to develop some bits and pieces.
Apparently, the update fucked me once more.. My XAMPP server, the Git commands, my permissions, .. Nothing works.. Now I have to google all this stuff to get everything working again, but the Wifi is sooo damn sloooow.
Doubted so many times to install ubuntu on my macbook, but I have no idea how Ubuntu handles the battery life, the led keyboard, the function buttons, … The whole OS X works for me, but once in a while, it fuckes me so hard, I would've liked it if it took me out for dinner once in a while.. :D3 -
I just blew up at my boss again.... I'm doing something and then he asks about including a new feature and figure out if it's doable. A quick question is ok but an analysis of a new feature.... NOT WHEN I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF RESOLVING A MORE IMMEDIATE ISSUE.
OPEN A FUCKING JIRA, SEND ME AN EMAIL, AND I'LL TAKE A LOOK ONCE I'M DONE WITH WHATEVER I M DOING.8 -
I totally want to refactor my project's code, but I don't have any time for it and now it's a working piece of spaghetti-ish 😭
I'm just praying I'll get to do it once it's actually finished, so I don't have to work with it again in like a year and want to travel back in time and murder myself.13 -
I've said this once before and I'll say it again, if you create a game engine, development kit or the like that is single threaded with no easy ability to allow multi threaded work loads, grab a cactus and firmly shove it down your urethra :-3
(It's mostly a rant with GameMaker but fuck sake, we have CPU's with more than 1 core... Let us use them!)4 -
Just purchased a new domain and decided to once again design my website personally (Fuck wordpress man) but...

Was just (once again) nearly run over on a pedestrian crossing. This time by an angry-looking old fart in his pick-up. He probably didn't even see me, and he didn't react in any way when I swinged my fist at him and yelled "Maniac!". These angry-looking old farts in their pick-ups are far too common a sight in this country. Those old dung heads drive in their sleep, not seeing anything, not hearing anything and not caring shit about anything. Stop driving already, go to a retirement home and stay there!3

Thank you Ubuntu for proving once again to be a usless piece of shit. Isn't the fucking console supposed one of your strengths? Once again, from the deepest of my heart, FUCK YOU UBUNTU29

Once, when I was trying to learn Ruby on Rails I declared a variable called 'public'.... I got so many errors, that I had to start the project from scratch again. #fml hahaha

*le me being frustrated af trying to compile asm.
.section won't work for fasm. And some other things won't work for Nasm.
Now I got the .obj aka .o from the .asm. But ldrdf.exe from the nasm compiler isn't working properly. And I can't find a troubleshoot online. Seems like this will be a sleepless night...2 -
Once again in my career I am asking myself if I shall risk self employment or go the safe route and work in another company.. :/2

Yeah, the newest Firefox-Android update killed compatibility for a fuckton of add-ons once again.
The usability is strong in this one.1 -
Heyy friends :-) Milo here once again, i hope everyone is having an absolutely amazing day as always and I really hope the upcoming week ahead brings everyone the best ☺️.
So I have finally managed to hand in all my major projects for my semester last Friday (yay less stress 😅) but tomorrow i have a final presentation to do (wish me luck 😅) ... boy am I nervous, but as of right now I’m just going over my slides ahah 😄.
So in my free time over the next couple of weeks I’m really planning on gaining a better understanding of algorithms , I’d love some input from
Anyone and any advice I’d highly appreciate!, currently i have a book called introduction to algorithms third addition sitting on my desktop and I’ve been reading some of that 😃..
So ladies and gents, once again thank you for taking the time to read my
Rambling and long post.. i just have a habit of rambling on 😄.. my bad , once again - thank you!
Milo 😃❤️13 -
Episode 2 of taking a big ass dump. This time its 1:54 am and i had to get my ass out of the bed to throw this big nuclear bomb. My legs are once again numb and i cant feel them from dumping for too long. I had to hold on walls and crawl up the bed. But when i did get to bed it was majestic. Numb legs but i dont care. I took a dump and now im 10 kg skinnier and i dont care4

anybody just love those oPeN sOuRcE libraries that COMPLETELY change their libraries syntax on a minor version change? like bro, do you even semver?
i've said it once and i'll say it again: open source will be the death of me10 -
Hardware dying again as of last night. Tried each RAM stick individually and my two original ones seem to be the cause so far. If it dies again with the extra sticks I had in, them I'm going to assume motherboard is packing up. Already tried a spare PSU and ruled that out.
Memtest died midway at random points several times and once it tried to boot around 10 times and died at various points along the way.
I just wish there was a more reliable way to test motherboards and power supplies on the PC itself. Also, I'll be stuck with only 4GB RAM from me new sticks 😭 -
So I decided to have some funzies over the weekend. Started XCOM 2. Built a team for a mission, spent an hour customising. Then I spent 3 hours going through and not failing miserably even once. The last fucking part of the mission, my favourite sniper dies after getting hammered in the face with a fucking laser beam. Then I lose control of the battlefield and everyone dies. Start again because I'm NOT gonna lose my awesome sniper!
This game is like designing software, planning deployment strategies, and disaster recovery at the same time. Recommended for all devs!6 -
Whenever I feel like searching for a freelancing job in python, I feel like I don't know anything and stop contacting the person who wants to hopefully - since there are retards who don't pay - pay for it.
Fucking impostor syndrome.2 -
I hate applying for jobs.
Because I spend time adding information to the job searching sites only to be forwarded to the individual company to enter my details once again.
Why can't they all just accept the details I have, at least carry over the basics.1 -
Teaching myself OO development via a hobby project, struggeling to make any progess because any little thing i do gets refactored, refactored, refactored again and refactored once more good measure..9

So, since winter is growing closer here and the temperatures started dropping, I once again began to bring a hot tea thermos with me at my University.
Whenever I get bored and lose focus, I usually pour a cup and drink, trying to relax and regain my lost concentration.
I also fail miserably and turn to my phone when inevitably the tea runs out :/ -
DRC Hide & Seek
Me: runs DRC on finished layout
KiCAD: Unconnected nets found.
Me: fixes unconnected and runs DRC again
KiCAD: Different unconnected nets found
Me: fixes unconnected and runs DRC again
KiCAD: Differen unconnected nets found
Me: srsly?! Why can't you tell me all of them at once?2 -
Coworker: I SSH into my liver every now and again. It's mostly to make sure it's kept up and running because I've blocked all the other ports to it. Once my kidneys can' handle the alcohol and energy drinks I'll start enabling cookies on it to help filter out that traffic.
Weird conversations with my coworker -
RANT!
4 months ago I asked my company do we get new contracts?
Yes in December they said. In December I asked again. yes in two weeks. Two weeks before the end of the year. contract received. It is worse than previous contract. 20% less pay, overtime not payed. Obligated to do overtime once in a while. And more issues just to name a few
Happy fucking holidays.
Start your year fresh being unemployed yeah!11 -
Going back and rewatching Star Wars stuff only to remember and get pissed off once again about the Sequel Trilogy. I can’t believe some people are allowed to make movies, watching a dog poop has more value than the entire story of those three movies, and Disney can go fuck themselves for that.10

Once again, I'm late to the party, wondering how in the world I never heard of ranger before yesterday. For me, it's an absolute game changer. It beats mc, the previous only console-based file manager I've seen, handily in terms of features, flexibility, aesthetics, and ease of use.
This will easily replace finder at work, and pcmanfm at home. It's in every major repo, including debian, redhat, arch, gentoo, and suse variants, and is available through homebrew too.2 -
I am looking to switch from Ubuntu (once again).
I already used Fedora and Arch in the past, while Arch was my fav, its just too much of a hassle to setup. But I keep finding tiny things that annoy me on Ubuntu.
So anyhow, what do you use/reccomend and why?13 -
Hello everyone, once again I’m asking for your help, for the first time I’m working as a counterpart for an external development company, this project already has a few months of work but there are not any technical documentation or quality metrics.
Would you suggest to ask all the necessary stuff with times, quality and requirements or it’s already impossible to do that?5 -
Tried to find and download drivers for a Dell laptop, but no matter what I got redirected to pages in Finnish. There's a country selector - also in Finnish. However, in my country we speak Swedish. Åland Islands is not an option in the country list, and Sweden is not called anything even remotely close to Sverige or Sweden in Finnish...so unless you happen to know Finnish you'll have to pick a country haphazardly until you find a language where you can at least understand the word Sweden. Once finally on the Swedish page, if you click your way forward on the support pages, you end up on the Finnish page again...AAARGH! Dell, if you want to be helpful then do it right! Once again, in Åland Islands, we speak Swedish. Even if Dell would acknowledge my country, making any assumptions about the user's language merely based on their geographical location, is flat out stupid! Have those morons at Dell never heard about multi-lingual countries? Or commuters? Tourists? Newsflash: In AD 2016 the world is multicultural and people also tend to travel abroad.

Do you know the feeling when you create a project, work on it for a few months, realize that it could be done better so you rethink and rewrite it, then after half a year you think that it's not good enough once again so you recreate it from scratch once more, then you get bored and leave the project for like 2 years and when you want to come back you see how bad the code is so you do one more rewrite? Well I do.
"Coming soon" since 2013! Starts to look good tho.4 -
devRant help me!
I'm getting a lovely little tax return and am in the middle on what laptop to buy.
MacBook Pro (I like MacOS and build quality, fight me)
or
PixelBook (I'm a google fanboy and love ChromeOS so once again... Fight me)
What do you think would be the best option keeping in mind the PixelBook will run Linux apps as well...14 -
Android 12, stop telling me every other day which app has permission to access my location in the background. I know, I gave permission, and I want to keep the setting "Allow all the time". Where's the "don't ask again" option?
And why does this happen for an app released by the German federal government (about once a week) but never, ever for your shitty Google Maps that always seems to know where I've been (at least if don't leave my phone at home, which is hard to do in times when you have to show your digital proof of vaccination everywhere yo go). Fucking Android, fuck the Android 12 clunkiness (inspired by Apple's iOS?) and fuck the fucking notifications. This is my phone, I paid for it, I own it, I want to turn off this bullshit. Wait, Google, once I find time to get back to LineageOS/Cyanogenmod you will never see a trace of my digital existence again. Oh, and fuck your "digital wellbeing" as well! At least you let me turn that off. Yes, I know, I am not grateful, but that's what devrant is for, isn't it? Fuck you, Google!2 -
Me post a lot of investigation in a slack thread and come to a conclusion
20 mins later engineers in thread post things like they didn't read anything I wrote and come to same conclusion, but involve other parties AGAIN making us all look dumb
Why do they just ignore what I wrote, literally linked the same splunk dashboards and same error numbers that I did. I don't get it.
Why should I care? I hoped I could use this as a way to convince manager once again that I do the things he asks me to, but it seems it's all useless.
Really want a new job but tough times, should be happy I even have a job I guess -
Holy fucking shit I will never buy a piece from ubiquiti again! Fuck their fucking stupid controller software that's absolutely fucked up, and resets everything once it's finally working!4
-
Once again I see offshore "developer" copy paste entire code base to separate folder, work on it there and then copy paste it back. Use a git branch goddammit. Is there something I'm not aware, is source control banned outside EU and US?4
-
Once again I go into interviewing with literally 4 minutes notification ahead of time on who the candidate is (obviously I still don't really know or understand what the hell is about to happen)
Management does not have their head screwed on straight; it's that simple

Am I the only one who uninstalls apps only to reinstall them after a few hours?
And then I waste the time to reconfigure those apps once again..2 -
"Designing something is like having a baby. Asking me to try another design once I’ve birthed something amazing is like asking me to put the baby back in the womb and try again. That never works out for anyone." - Chad McMillan

The term 'continuous rot' just came to mind as something like this: A lone/sole developer is hired to implement a solution but dispite the illusional good intent shared by everyone at the beginning, time constrains will soon come into play and the code deteriorates at a rapid pace until the developer can't handle it anymore... But someone else comes to continue the work... And the rot continues... And once again... And again...again....
Anyone?1 -
That son of a bitch, tbat was supposed to set up home internet, didn't show up. AGAIN! Timeframe of 2h and I was there 1h before and after it. Brain dead pieces of shit didn't call me and I - once again - lost 2h of work. Shitstained ISP hell, these fuckers are within 5 minutes distance from my home, but I have to spend my days without real internet again3
-
I love when I compile. Then I’m missing one character in a listener function. Compile again. Oops one other character. Compile again. Well WAHT the fuck is it now? I once spent two hours looking for an error in my CSS and my diff program (beyond compare) didn’t show spacing changes in a line.1

Me, explaining once again that a webserver needs to be thread safe:
"I have nothing to learn from my colleagues".2 -
So in my experience, coding while I'm not sober actually helps out sometimes. I always end up documenting my code way more so that I can keep track of what I am doing, and the code I write is actually decent.
Ofcourse, I always re-test it once sober again2 -
When fixing a bug i feel like i'm being interrogated. I just keep screaming out "I don't know!!" then i get punched again. "....once again - i told you i dont know"1

TGIF... And once again solved another issue brought up by another dev by just reading the javadocs on the problematic Spring annotation
How senior do you need to be to finally learn the first step to solving most problems is to RTFM....1 -
So once again, I'm planning for a new website I'm developing, a little side project. I tend to put pen to paper and map out what features I want to include and see where that goes.
It's got me thinking how everyone else likes to plan for their personal projects and if I'm missing a trick?2 -
I feel that sometimes using the principles of DRY is just overkill and serves as an incubator for over engineering something that could be really simple. Something's are just going to be used once and never again...
This is not a anti structure rant just a thought.5 -
Once again, the next build after hitting Ctrl + C while building a project surprised me with `java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Malformed \uxxxx encoding`.
In which file? Is it so difficult to provide users with helpful information? Your `-X` option still does not show anything.
(Not to mention it must not corrupt ~/.m2/repository on SIGINT).1 -
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Many years ago, when most of you were toddlers, different web browsers were...different, and the most different of them all was Internet Explorer. Web applications were not automatically cross-browser compatible and it took a lot of adaptation/tweaking to make a webapp, or even a simple web page, work and look the same across different web browsers. Some web pages/apps only worked on a specific browser and poorly, if at all, on some other browsers. Now, in 2024, we're there again. Atlassian's Confluence works without a hitch on Edge, but often fails miserably on Firefox. Too bad. I don't like Edge, but am forced to use it just for Confluence. So, once again, I have separate web browsers for different tasks.6
-
One of the most stupid phrases I hear again and again is "to not reinvent the wheel". Guess what, if no one had ever dared to take the first iteration of something, throw it out the window and start from scratch, we'd still be living in the stone age. If you're gonna use a library or a framework, fine, that's totally valid. Just make sure to actually understand the tools and code you're working on. People now tend to use these without knowing exactly what they do. And then once the original authors retire, no one knows what to do if something breaks. There can't be innovation if you don't try to reinvent. Don't shy away from writing from scratch sometimes.
-
Oh man, once again wasted a weekend trying to install Gentoo, without succeeding.
Pretty much everything works, except my fucking Touchpad.1 -
Anyone else have a problem with they MacBook Pro's internal connector to they keyboard and mouse becoming disconnected?
I've got it fixed at the Apple store once and now it's happened again! I'm so tired of having to mush the cable in through the chassis 😥2 -
I've been to a meeting where I asked a question and the reply I got was not remotely related to the question.
He asked me ' Does my answer makes sense?'
I said yeah.
Inner me: I am so tired and I can't repeat the question once again. Aren't you even listening?.1 -
Fuck randomly appearing and disappearing bugs when I compile a project in C with no changes in the source code.
Fuck these microbits in the ass.
Took me three fucking days to battle them. Aaaargh!11 -
Once upon a time I was a student. We had QBasic programming with graphics involved in it. Once I was thinking about animation as we were told in the classroom. In order to perceivably move an object, we were supposed to draw the object, erase the screen, give some delay then draw the object again at a slightly different position....repeat the same thing all-over...
I suppose I had not done this exercise even once.. I might have seen it happen at our labs, I did not like it.. because I was clearly able to make out that screen is clearing...there was too much fluctuation..it did not look good as an animation..
I tried to better the process by redrawing in black color instead of calling a clearscr() routine and keeping all other things same.
I had also put an infinite outer loop so that I can see the process all over again after the circle (it was a circle I was moving btw), started from one end of screen and reached the end of screen.
As I hit F5, I was so impressed by the results...that I kept staring at it for 10 passes of the circle.. it was pretty darn smooth.. -
Today my ping caught me off-guard once again, but I will stop this madness for all eternity! Writing the ultimate ping tool, so I never have to fear high ping ever again.. well I cannot fix my f*cking internet provider, but my ping tool can warn me, even if it detects only the slightest inconsistency!
But first I have to figure out why my tool doesn't output the ping... -
4 hours applying to freelance jobs once again, and once again not a single interest. Maybe I'm doing something wrong2

My little journey of regrets:
I remember when I was fourteen, I opened a small gap the door of "programming". It were the first steps of html, tags and what they do, to be precise.
"May, looks good. Thanks for the glimpse. Cya"
For about the other half of my life only magic happened at my desktop.
And now I'm standing once again at the door of programming trying to breach it with nukes n shit.
"Giev me all the knowledge plx, teach me senpai! I will never ignore and betray you again!" -
Why my friend learns new languages: will it get me a higher salary?
Why I learn new languages: work isn't challenging, I don't have any side projects, don't feel like binging anime...
Just started learning Scala to once again try to pick up FP paradigm.
I'm also thinking it may be better for understanding algorithms?
Yes I know I'm late to the party -
Working for a company using Cobol > CGI > PHP > MySQL > Django, and once again another custom rolled framework with no documentation in PHP. Basically no desire, haha.

I posted two of my projects a few days ago to producthunt one did very well and what came out of it is i got offered a fulltime job in my town.
That will be my first job if i pass their test im doing tomorrow and Im scared beyond shittless. Not from test but from the whole experience. All of it happened too fast. Im starting to doubt myself now. And once again scared shittless. Fuck you brain!2 -
I really don't know how I feel about SystemD.
Their recent reveal of Systemd-Homed made me once again doubt the logic behind the project. I mean, yes, systemd is handy to work with at some occasions (SysVInit, for example, doesn't store information about when a certain service failed), but SystemD is slowly eating up more and more of the system's jobs, and I'm a little worried, what would happen if SystemD suddenly went bust.
That will never happen, I know, but... Wasn't the idea behind Unix... Its modularity? That its made up of clearly defined parts that cooperate with each other, rather than a huge, monolithic projects that handle several functions at once?
This is not meant to be a hate post about Systemd, just a little... reminiscence about its goal and role in the Linux community.
Any ideas are appreciated! Discussions are welcome. Just... keep it civil. Please.3 -
What are your opinions on antivirus programs?
I've just recently looked a bit deeper into it and it's scary how useless they've become... Especially signature based ones, as 82% of all malware only gets used once before they get changed again and 70% of them are only active for >1h.
Also, if you're able to google and have a slow sunday, you can easily write your own virus that won't be recognized by AV. It won't be a devilish masterpiece, but it'll work.
Do you think AV (especially paid ones) have a future?2 -
So I have being practicing algorithms again and my biggest issue I realise is understanding the question. Once I have that down, I can draw up a game plan and then go ahead with the implementation then optimise once I have a working solution. However, it's like sometimes the problems are written by children that are way too smart and I just don't get it. 🤯1

Camembert cheese in the fridge is great, but how can one survive without the stronger Nespresso capsules ;(

I was listening to my playlist for a while and then this question popped out of nowhere.
There is a playlist consisting of 10 different songs.
We press the shuffle button.
In the each step, a single random song is picked and played. Once the song is finished, it will be tagged out until each song has been played at least once.
Once each song has been played at least once, the playlist would reset and start the shuffling mechanism again.
Now my question is:
What is the probability of two songs (In shuffle mode) being played in the same order they are in the playlist?6 -
FUDGE FUDGE FRICKIN FUDGING FUDGE!
Why does eduroam hav to such a major annoyance when I want to connect with my ubuntu laptop! I NEED THAT WIFI TO FINISH MY ASSIGNMENT!!!!

Mouse starting to break down once again.... Any suggestions for a good durable/comfortable mouse ? Shouldn't be too big, I have medium-sized hands. Also open to alternative input methods (trackball, trackpad, etc) if recommended.19

Not a dev job, but was once called about a month after I applied for a job and was told they put me at the top of their pile of applications and never heard from them again

So PHP PDOs... nothing fucking works. It's that or the lovely MariaDB implementation, I know that the query is correct and I've tried a stored procedure as well. The query itself ran once to add one user and never again while anything I try now doesn't return any result. I'm going to install Percona and see if it's the implementation or me.8

I was just thinking how I could have used the. A* algorithm to accomplish making something other than the junky once and never use again kiosk program my firm was contracted for years ago

It took me a month's time to adjust to working in co-working space last year and it took around similar this to adjust to working from home this year. Both working environments have there own pros and cons but somehow we all find a way to continue working.
Don't know what working environment lies ahead of me once this lockdown get's over but I hope I adjust again in similar manner there too :D -
TRUMPS BEEN IN OFFICE FOR 20 MINUTES AND THE US ALREADY FEELS LESS GAY, AND A RANDOM 100 DOLLA BILL APPEARED IN MY WALLET, THE EARTH IS SELF CLEANSING, ECONOMY REGENERATING, I FEEL HOPE AGAIN FOR A BRIGTHER FUTURE, WE'RE GONNA EXPERIENCE MARS OCCUPATION IN OUR LIFETIME, TODAY IM FUCKING ANOTHER WHORE, SOON I WILL START SHITTING LESS, BECOME A MILLIONAIRE IN THE TRUMP ERA, AND LIFE MIGHT ACTUALLY BE FUCKING GOOD FOR ONCE17

Company automatically disables your employee login passwords after every 45 days, which is a good practice for ensuring security. However I get no notifications that my password is being disabled. The result, for the past 4 months, I've been going to IT support requesting them to let me change my password on their admin console because I forgot to change it 'once again'. Sigh.. :/2
-
Working with non-existing specs. Just have to pick a guess what arguments and columns that will be needed. Right now it feels like I'm up to a very fuzzy task, that will need to be done over and over again until it gets right, instead of doing it right once and for all. If this is agile, then agile is a waste of time!5
-
I'm asking for your help, once again, because I couldn't find any similar problem online.
I've written this neat thingy here, in Go
https://github.com/thosebeans/wento
And i try to integrate the wren-interpreter with it (is written in C).
All compiles and works, but I can't print to Stdout from the C-Code.
Any of you know what could cause this?1 -
Does anyone here knows some efficiant way for stupid Broadcom wifi card to work efficiant on linux? Its Bcm43142. I recently transfered on Manjaro by suggestion of fellow ranters, but little that I knew or I wanted to forget from earlier experiences that Broadcom is bag of balls that noone wants and that it doesnt work correctly on any distro. I'm feeling like protagonist of that meme "C'mon, do something...". I really dont want to give up on linux once again cuz of dump wifi controller.7

As a noob developer, I once scaffold a sample project using JHipster, left it for awhile, went back, tried to run it again and basically, spent a whole day downloading updates and recreating the project from scratch (not to mention being lost in the whole stack and project itself, enabling it to run but failing to understanding each stack components)

Once again spent a day MacGyvering together all the missing pieces of the app for tomorrows presentation deadline. This time the code base is 95% good code and 5% of dirty hacks which are essential for the rest to function properly.
One day I'll enough time to finish a development cycle on time. One day... -
Once again sorry about this not being a dev related rant but fuck me this is while close and I am more than shitting a brick right now I am nearly going to be sick, I've heard a lot of rumours about leave maybe causing destabilization of the peace process in NI and I can't fucking deal with more Troubles, like just no, oh and on another note I'm fairly sure something has happened to the XE currency exchange backend, the pound hasn't budged in like 1 hour even with all those leave votes which is weird (then again I couldn't be fucked looking to see if it's changed anywhere else)3

I have once again ended up waking up at 4am, and starting work at 6am - the catch? I don't have any work lined about except one issue I am simply unable to resolve

Android Studio 3.2b4 once again regressed on "No tests found" bug for Kotlin projects.
I guess someone at big G decided to "comment out failing tests for now and come back to it before the release"
I feel like this rant should be riddled with profanity but at this point I'm not even angry just very disappointed 😥 -
Don't judge here fuckers you know it's call DevRant, not DevITalkAboutHowIShouldImproveMyself -

Incredible. I am once again on my brown throne. Wasnt a long time since my last rant. My asshole and stomach seem like they just cant get enough of shitting. Quite annoying if you ask me. My asshole started burning now from the frequency of shitting bullshit. Does anyone know how to stop shitting often?5

Not quite dev-related, but I once had to migrate and replace a Windows Server 2003 Domain (1 DC) to a new Windows Server 2016 Domain Controller. The network consisted of about 30 PCs, 1 DC and 1 DB Server.
Eventhough it worked, I wouldn't do it again... 😰
At the beginning I almost deleted the old Domain Controller VM from the old ESXi host server, before any VM backup existed. Close one... -
One of my exes was soooo squishy. I mean Michelin mascot level squishy. If you feel it just once you start to strive for that exact thing and you’ll never be the same again.3

Hey guys - I hope everyone is doing very well as always - I'd love to know , on My Ubuntu is it possible to make modifications of my system through Code? - Perhaps i need to download the part I'm interested in making modifications to? any suggestions or recommendations you'd make as to how you would do that? thank you all once again!
Or maybe its not such a good idea for a beginner to be doing such things?
Cheers! <35 -
Hey rants! So I am going to test Balmer curve once again! Preparing regression model for altered SIR model with time dependent parameters (for Covid). Wish me successful code!

Once again I'm honestly impressed with Joas at joaoapps.com bringing his new Join service to the Xbox.
You can now reroute your incoming messages, such as SMS and Whatsapp, to your Xbox and reply.
Well done sir, well done -
I absolutely hate Sage, it's like getting stabbed repeated to then discover the previous stabbing didn't actually do anything so you have to get stabbed again, like why can I not just export a whole ledger at once? Why do I have to do it a page at a fucking time?
