My last night:
- Had nothing much to work on.
- Opened a porn site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good video.
- Realized full screen isn't working on the page.
- Fired up JS console, spent the next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.
Bad UI = No Fuck.23 -
The worst bad practice I do is I keep going to work.
Many years down the road I will probably look back and say I should have spent more time with my wife (who are you?) and children (wow, you are tall).4 -
Boss: make this thing
Me: yeah no worries. Where is the spec?
Boss: We don't have enough one but we outsourced the design so call him
Designer: haven't started yet
Me: excellent
Boss: I'm going on holiday. I'll leave this to you.
Me: erm ok. I'm having a few problems getting stuff out of the designer though.
*2 weeks later and still no designs*
Boss: I'm back. Where is the progress?!
Me: indeed.
*1 week later i get half designs that sort of make sense*
Boss: hurry up!
*1 week later*
Me: designer you're busting my balls here
Designer: yeah lol
Me to boss: still having problems. No idea what I'm doing.
Boss: deal with it
*2 days later*
PM: we are demoing it to clients tomorrow
Me: brilliant. I'll become a magician then.
* Meeting goes well and no one notices the thing is a bit buggy*
*2 days later*
Me to boss and pm: you already know whats going on but I'll keep trying.
Boss: ok it's just a proof of concept anyway.
Designer: yeah here's the rest of the designs lol
*1 week later, the designs made no sense, no idea what they wanted but hey it's a proof of concept so I'll just do my best...*
*suddenly again, hey you have 1 week before we sell it. Lol. smashes a product together as fast as humanly possible, due to half designs and no time to do it right even html classes and CSS aren't right - didn't know things would be repeated at the time. No time to fix entire thing. Luckily just a proof of concept*
New senior developer: hey boss just said this is being sold tomorrow.
Me: wtf..It's a proof of concept and i was given longer...
New senior developer: no
Me: :(
Senior developer and all colleagues: it's full of bugs and doesn't work
Me: yes that will happen without specs, random tight deadlines, no designs that made sense and a total of about a week and a half to make an entire system for multiple user types to make applications, send messages, post jobs, handle all paperwork and move paperwork among different user types as they go through applications. I told everyone what was going on but i get no support...
*Silence*
Boss: wtf i gave you so long! All i know is my entire staff is working on a product that should be done ages ago
Me: ok, however i have said almost every day i need-
Boss: I'm not interested
*I finish my placement year and never get any promised work or the job offer*
Seems legit?16 -
Was scared to take up freelance work because i was scared of bad clients.
Finally took one today, client is not a total arse and knows exactly what she wants me to do, down to details.

There was a previous developer who my managers has told us was terrible and toxic. Yet due to terrible planning, he had everyone work for over 13 hours last Sunday.
I contacted this previous developer to learn his side of the story and learned a lot. I realize between their two narratives is the truth, but I see all the ways we've been lied, the ways this other dev was scapegoated and all the additional work that's sure to come.
I refuse to work weekends again. I refuse to work over 40 hours. I wish I could convince everyone else to do the same. No amount of money is worth making up for bad planning and management.1 -
Looks like I'm getting fired on Wednesday :)
Long story:
*I add first unit tests to project.
*Boss adds new functionality and breaks all the tests so I can't compile and write more for what I'm working on.
*Boss is very fragile and cannot handle any comment that can possibly be taken as a slight against him.
Me: "I wanted to ask what our policy on unit tests is please? Because we haven't really said how we are treating unit tests, and everyone myself included is not thinking about them. I also haven't added tests when I fixed bugs and this time your changes broke the tests"
Boss 10 minutes later: "I want to speak to you in private".
Boss: "you are too forceful and direct. You said I should have added tests."
Me: "yeah but I didn't mean in a nasty way"
Boss getting louder and more aggressive: "You are too forceful"
Me: "I didn't mean it in a bad way"
Boss: "I didn't want to add tests for that!"
Me: "then why add any tests?"
Boss: "Fine we are not having this conversation now!"
*Boss storms out
I decided I can't speak to the guy about anything without upsetting him spoke to the manager before I quit because I can't work like this.
That resulted in a meeting with my boss, his boss and the head of HR where I ended up savaging him and told them I can't bring up anything as I can never tell if it will offend him and that I spend ages writing emails and trying to document communications because I just can never tell if I will upset him. Also that I cannot bring up any ideas because I can't tell if he will somehow get offended and that I can't even write code because if I change something he wrote at some point he will get angry.
My boss claims that I am extremely forceful and disrespectful and that I am constantly insulting him and his decisions.
We go back over a ton of shit and I refute everything he says. In the end I have to have a meeting with him on Wednesday where we either get things straight, he fires me or I quit.
I think at this point that our relationship is too fucked for him to be my team lead on a 6 man team.
Side note I keep bringing forth ideas because we have one database shared between 6 Devs, no pull requests (apart from mine and another new guy), no test driven development, no backlog, no team driven story pointing, no running tests before merging, no continuous integration setup, no integration tests, no build step on merge, no idea of if we are on track to our deadline other than his gut feeling, no actual unit tests backend - just integration with a test db, no enthusiasm to learn in the team and no hope.21 -
This may sound odd but I find myself more productive when I use linux. The whole environment kind of helps me to concentrate on the work.
Bad news is I always Windows 😞16 -
Guy from work: "I have a messy coding style ¯\_(ツ)_/¯".
No, you have a bad coding style. Your repetitive uncommented spaghetti code isn't an artistic expression of your quick imaginative mind jumping from thought to thought. It's a horrible mess that shows me that either you can't do any better or you don't care.8 -
My work mate just sent this, it made me feel better:
"If you ever have a day when you fucked up badly, made a huge mistake and you feel like a total kluts, click this link: https://google.com/maps/... and feel happy in that you didn’t fuck up bad enough for it to show on google earth!"
😇11 -
Made a bad pun at work. Collegue:
What about I break this beer bottle *points at it*, stick it in your throat and put it up your ass sideways afterwards?
Me: 😅 I'll stop 😅
Sometimes my timing is bad :P13 -
A guy asked me today after we were having a chat about bad programmers at his work place:
Guy: "What do bad programmers move to after they constantly mess up and get stuck on tasks?"
Me: "Management!"2 -
Bad news: Company shutting down, gave one day notice and was told not to come in for work the next day. Was compensated, of course. But still, it sucks.
Good news: I'm a developer.9 -
Senior devs out there, please be supportive to juniors. Don't treat them bad just because they don't know as much as you do. Guide them and help them learn and grow as devs. That'll make your company (and/or the community) a better place to work at, because everyone will be a better dev, and you might learn and grow in the process as well.15
-
Bad: it works but throws errors
Worse: it doesn’t work but throws errors
Worst: it doesn’t work and doesn’t throw errors7 -
*installs Ubuntu to feel good about my pathetic self by using Linux*
*suddenly realizes need to use Photoshop for UI/UX work*
*tries setting it up using PlayOnLinux but fails everytime for random reasons*
*keeps going back to Windows to work*
Feels bad, man...23 -
Manager: We really need to save money with this project, so nobody call tech support for anything.
Me: There's this open-source solution that would work great.
Manager: Bad idea! There's no tech support number to call.
Me: ...4 -
So we had a dev on our team who was on a performance improvement plan, wasn't going to pass it, but decided to quit before it was over saving us 2 weeks.
I was ecstatic when he left (caused us hell). I knew updating his code wouldn't be great, but he was only here 6 months
"how bad could it be" - practiseSafeHex - moron, idiot, suicidal.
A little run down would be:
- Despite the fact that we use Angular 2+, one of his apps is Angular 1 ... Nobody on the team has ever used Angular 1.
- According to his package.json he seems to require both mongoDb and Cloudant (couchDb).
- Opened up a config file (in plaintext) to find all the API keys and tokens.
- Had to rename all the projects (micro services) because they are all following a different style of camelcase and it was upsetting my soul.
- All the projects have a "src" folder for ... you know ... the source code, except sometimes we've decided to not use it for you know, reasons.
- Indentation is a mess.
- He has ... its like ... ok I don't even know wtf that is suppose to be.
- Curly braces follow a different pattern depending on the file you open. Sometimes even what function you look at.
- The only comments, are ones that are not needed. For example 30+ lines of business logic and model manipulation ... no comment. But thank god we have a comment over `Fs.readFile(...)` saying /* Read the config file */. Praise Jesus for that one, would have taken me all week to figure that out.
Managers have been asking me how long the "clean up" will take. They've been pushing me towards doing as little as possible and just starting the new features on top of this ... this "code".
The answer will be ... no ... its getting deleted, any machine its ever been on is getting burned, and any mention of it will be grounds for death.6 -
After 5 years of neglect I have finaly found some time to work on an old project of mine.
Not a bad view to work from either9 -
In the darkest of days, I discovered how to remote login to my computer at work through the company vpn. I then proceeded to work overtime at night in secret for a week or so, writing documentation and refactoring code.
I finally woke the fuck up and realized that I shouldn't be obsessing over proprietary codebases that do not belong to me, and I should put this misguided energy into my own projects.
So yeah, as a bad dev habit I'm working on fixing, this fits the bill.4 -
After working for about 3 years of my life I've established the following;
Work is mostly stupid people praising other stupid people about their stupid work, while clever people remain in the shadows. Will this be true for the rest of my career or am I just working at a company with a bad culture?5 -
A few months ago, I decided to let go some old clients with bad behavior and/or bad projects, since I noticed this was affecting my mental health (lowering my self esteem, make me feel depressed, anxious, etc).
I was exhausted of doing miracles in projects without git, build files, staging enviroments (yes... you can imagine), and receive all sort of curses when sudenly something stopped to work.
I set some requirements to work with any new project/client: 1) project needs to be under version control, 2) it must have staging enviroment, 3) I must work with build files.
As I still have contracts running, I'm communicating this to clients as soon as I finish my obligations.
Today, one of these clients told me they are leaving to work with another developer.
Reason: They said my new requirements are unreasonable and they prefer doing the old way.3 -
I think having the wrong job can really bring down the quality of life.
My friend has to drive two hours each way to get to and from work. That's four hours wasted commuting.. and his job is service desk agent.
What are the consequences, you ask? He never has a spare second to talk to me, he's quickly developing gray hairs and he has no time awareness.
Having the wrong job is unhealthy and results in a cascade of bad side effects.. When most of your day involves work-related things, that's just wrong. There is no Yin-Yang there. I know because my work life is somewhat balanced.12 -
I feel bad for the coders who work for cia developing those spywares.
They have to live with the fact that they / their dear ones will also be a victim of the tool they created.
Imagine living with that fact... must be depressing.4 -
Everytime I look at an open source project code, I realize how bad I am and that I must work harder in order to take part in such amazing projects.2
-
Although I can easily support myself through my current manual labor work, I am starting to dread going to work because I just really miss programming and server management 😞
The job isn't even that bad but idk, I just really miss devving throughout the day 😩8 -
So you think it's bad when your friends, family, strangers and others ask you to fix their phone or computer is bad when they hear you're a programmer, IT or good with computers?
You think it's bad when they ask you whether you're hacking when they see code or terminal on your screen?
You think it's bad when they ask you to fix a cracked phone screen because you work with computers?
Well, think again because today my teammate was asked to fix a vending machine by X from another department because, according to X the vending was not accepting X's other dollar bill. The first dollar bill was accepted so why wouldn't it accept the 2nd one? Because the 🤬 dollar bill is crumpled. That's it.
What wows me is what made X think this is an IT issue.
According to X.... "because it has power, lights and touch screen so IT can fix it That's what you guys do, right? You can fix anything".
Me: wait!?, what?, uhhh..., are you serious? Wtf? Why? Grrrr4 -
So yeah. There is some problem on production. I'm working on it for over a day, and can't make it work. The bad method is 500 lines. The method that calls it is almost 1000 lines and its class is 5k. This is the second one. FML :(16
-
hmm let's see
>atheist propaganda during lunch time
>fascist propaganda during lunch time
>praising the rival of the football team boss supports
>suggesting we should drink alcohol in work hours
>teaching minecraft to boss' son
>talking bad about star wars VII even though boss liked it6 -
Got hired as an SSRS engineer. Walked into work day 1 thinking I was a bad ass with my SQL joes2pros knowledge and quickly (and i mean quickly) got smacked down with what real SQL procs look like........should've renamed my title to SSRS reverse-engineer. Good times.2
-
PSA.
Bad Managers will, sometimes, abuse imposter syndrome to have you work longer hours. Don't let them.9 -
!rant
I got a promotion at work!
Is it weird that I don't want it because I still feel like I have too much to learn to no longer be a "junior"? I'm happy that my hard work is paying off but I'm worried that this is how bad senior devs are made.7 -
I think that since most of my work involves typing, my handwriting has gotten really bad. It looks like a bunch of worms...5
-
Be me, miss specifying the item in an array so a drop-down doesn't work, get fired from the project and moved to a much lesser project.
Be the other guy, fuck up the app so bad you have to roll back 3 weeks worth of work...no big deal...1 -
When you have a "GREAT" idea, start to work on it and after 2 hours you have forgot why you have started the project.
Me right now 😖
Sorry for my bad english 😓3 -
Still in “negotiations” to get paid for work I already delivered under a presumption of trust based on a track record of getting paid in the past. My bad for taking them at their word. Now it’s time for them to…3
-
Who says all bugs are bad? Vending machine at work only charges you a dollar regardless what drink you buy if you use android pay.1
-
I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!4 -
I know I rant about how bad the app is I have to update on at work is but seriously first week into this job I found skeleton code from a taxi app, it wasn't in English and lately I found some code from some sort of funeral app wtf!
This just takes copying and pasting to a whole new fucking level!4 -
To not waste time, let's just commit my work and put the message as ".....". Oh, and let's do that dozens of times.
---
One day we had to git bisect his work and found that. Then, obviously, we asked him "what the commit with five dots do?" he said that there was a a lot of them, and i proceeded to explain why it was a bad idea to not write a proper commit message.
He is a good dev, so he understood and started to write what the commit does, instead of five dots.3 -
It was a girl who made the interview...
Girl:bla bla bla work stuff
Me: just staring and answering dumb questions..
Girl : do you find me attractive..?
Me: wtf like aaa what I'm gay sorry.
Girl :so you became gay because of me...?
Me: these questions aren't related to work... Will you continue or what?
Girl : looked me bad....
and went to the next room and a guy came. Fast forward...
im working with her for 4 years now...
(hope you don't hate me for this)15 -
Zoom’s CEO says he won’t encrypt free calls so Zoom can work more with law enforcement:
“Free users for sure we don’t want to give that because we also want to work together with FBI, with local law enforcement in case some people use Zoom for a bad purpose,” Yuan said.15 -
I dont get people, who work in the IT business but does not have a genuine interest in it.
Everything they will do will be bad
They will not learn nice stuff
They will do stuff slowly
They ask stupid questions all the fucking time2 -
i worked at this startup that had these very low wages, hustle culture, bad work environment (bad or no computers for staff, no ergonomics, cramped), and they delayed payments a lot. my boss was mad at me cause i said i didn't see myself there in the future lol. i didn't last 4 months, and i saw colleagues leave within a month. i was so burned out i thought i didn't want to be a dev anymore2
-
Got a nice blackmail email sent to my work email during the weekend. Too bad when I got back to work on Monday he already sent the pics. JK this is a work email he doesn't have shit on me.
He did send the email from my email but the password he said hasn't been since I started working here. I just feel insulted. Come on guys let's donate so he doesn't share how hard I work.
Here's the email: https://text-share.com/view/...9 -
I just don't have words.....
Yesterday I had message from our CEO, that one of our biggest and most important project's CEO have told her that there is spelling mistake in my email signature and people there will judge because of that.
PS: I had Enginner instead of Engineer in such small font that even no one even noticed in entire year not even me.(I don't even feel ashamed for that it was not intentional and it does not make me bad at what I do at my work)
I just want to ask you guys are people really that bad they judge based on spellings? and not on work and their dedication?
I think there will be thousand of people who can't even speak or write English but are more innovative.11 -
!rant
Hmmmm they are selling some used dell precission t3500 desktops at work.
Intel Xeon, 8 gb ram, windows 7 for $60 bucks. Thinking about using it as an experimental Linux machine.
Yay or nay? What do y'all think? For $60 it certainly does not sound too bad eh?11 -
Have I ever told you guys of the time that I had made my PM feel bad by saying I had to drop 3 classes because he was working me so hard?
Yeah that happened and he felt really bad about it!
GOOD! FUCKING GOOD! I want you to feel bad about it! Don't you dare say that I'm not putting in enough work ever again!1 -
To all you fuckers out there giving bad app rating because some shit does not work on your shitty phone and you are to fucking lazy to report the bug via the fucking "send log to dev"-button that pops up with the exception.
Go fuck yourself.
And to all the user whose bugs I fixed and did not change their Bad rating - fuck you too.
And oh.. The fucktards that did not even install the app and give a Bad rating because i am your competitor - guess what...fuck you.8 -
you'd think by now people would understand version control. a whole days work gone because of bad merging.4
-
I've just realised it might be a bad idea to use my real name on devRant.
I use it everywhere online. Work "agree" to leave my social alone... but I'm still sure they spy on me.
Whoops. Hi?4 -
Good idea:
Making your own framework so you have control over it and your projects
Bad idea:
Making your own closed framework rendering Google and SO useless
Context: the company I work for creates their products using their own framework, it works well and allows for things other framework didn't think about, any error coming from it cannot be searched for since it's only used internally.3 -
!rant (kind of)
I have the bad habit of suggesting "awesome" and "cool" features for projects and stuffs.. (Mostly just for fun and won't give a lot of value to the project, but would be cool). The less fun side.. I'm the only developer (in most cases..)
Me: Hey, wouldn't it be cool if the user could do this or that, or if this was implemented etc.. ?
Boss/Leader: Oh, hehe yeah, hmm.. *thinking* [a bit later] .. You're right, go ahead, implement that feature..
Me: .. Damnit..
But hey, on the bright side.. It's an extra feature! :D4 -
Quitting today my current job, my boss (a dev too) got mad 'cause I didn't accept any proposal and he has a lot of work coming for me.
PD: I feel bad, but I think is part of growing, right?2 -
seagull management
| ˈsēˌɡəl manijmənt | noun
When managers are totally uninvolved in the work, but they just swoop down once in a while to shit all over everything. “This is wrong, and this, and this looks bad,” etc., before flying away again.2 -
Conspiracy theory: Google sent rogue pro devs to work for IE and make it so bad everyone would come running to Chrome for a savior.3
-
Time management tips one must follow to be successful:-
1. Remove distractions:- Phone, Whatsapp, Instagram, FB, etc. All away from you during work.
2. Remove clutters: Get rid of not required things.
3. Eliminate redundancy
4. Emulate others: (My favourite) If someone has spend time and done some work. Do not reinvent the same work done just replicate that work and continue from that point.
5. Share burden: Team work and depending on others is not bad.
6. Make work fun: Most important if you enjoy your work you will give your best.5 -
When I say I code I mean I write fake HTML comments in the WordPress editor when the Client is watching me work so he doesn’t feel bad for paying me a month’s salary for doing what a 14 y/o is able to accomplish within two hours of googling
-
Fucking long week at work.. but its not all bad. Facebook stock tanking makes up for it. Bahaha fuck em3
-
When college professors want students to do college portal's works.
ACCEPT THE FUCKING WORK.
DO NOT CHANGE THE INITIAL REQUIREMENT WHILE I'M WORKING ON IT.
DO NOT CHANGE MY WORK WITHOUT ASKING ME OR AT THE LEAST NOTIFYING ME.
YOUR PORTAL LOOK HORRIBLE NOW WITH SHIT TIER MENU WHICH I SUGGESTED IN THE FIRST PLACE THAT IT WOULD LOOK GOOD THIS WAY. AND NOW YOU'VE MADE IT LOOK SO BAD MY EYES HAVE CANCER.1 -
Resigned from a job I got before my last semester of Masters where I worked almost two years. Boss started acting bad at the end and my work was really stressful.
Now I don't have a job and running out of money.
Have a job interview next week where I have a slight chance of getting it. Hope ai get it!4 -
Half a year ago, I got fired in my job. The reason was the same always bullshit; we have very little clients, economy nowadays is terribly bad, our priorities are different now than when we hired you, etc.
The last week I spent there, I heard something about my poor performance and programming skills, and that pissed me off a lot. For six months I worked on a laravel web app for managing customers, tasks and invoices, a fucking CRM, but made specifically for that company just because they didn't know sugar, odoo, prime or whatever.
Parallel to the crappy CRM, I was told to patch some PrestaShop, WordPress and plain sites, and it was hard to communicate with customers, management ignored every email I sent, and all I was told to do was "do as they say".
The result was shit, obviously, and my work showed much less skill, knowledge and expertise than I really have.
After that, I spent a few months unemployed, studying and working as a waiter just to survive, because my contract didn't comply with unemployment office requirements for a pay.
Then I got this job, on an analytics company where guess what, I'm told to write a fucking laravel web app for managing customers, invoices and tasks. In the meantime, I design websites, and communication with customers is shit, and management ignores every single mail I send.
My salary is eight hundred putos euros again, and will contract is wet shit.
I know, maybe I am "not that good" to earn a 3000€+ salary and have a good team support.
But I'm not */that/* bad.5 -
Having a job helps a lot when you've just had a really bad breakup. The work distracts you from the shit you're going through for at least 10 hours everyday. But the weekends become really depressing.3
-
Came across this in a site work took on from another agency. Bad JS calculation of someone's age, there was many other terrible date manipulation parts throughout the site4
-
I got recognized!
I'm new here and was mostly learning, but my team pushed through some bad issues and I got recognized as well. Even for helping whatever little I could.
For all the rants of bad bosses and clients and work. Here's a happy one. :)
I'm in good company in this company. -
Why even is Microsoft Teams?
Why does it suck so bad? Why is it a memory hog? Why does the ELECTRON desktop app not have native ARM64 support neither on Windows nor macOS? Why is it even an Electron app? Why the web version does not work with Safari (then again, barely anything more complex than my portfolio site works on Safari)? Why is the UI from 2016? Why is it preinstalled with Windows 11? Why the pre-installed Windows 11 version is a completely different entity? Why the preinstalled Windows 11 version does not work with school/work version of Teams calls?10 -
Is it bad that I'm excited about going back to work from tomorrow?
Like, I haven't even done jackshit throughout the break, and so it won't be easy jumping back in with both feet.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯7 -
There are two types of people: Doers, and Talkers.
It really annoys me when talkers (who do nothing) ask me to stop doing things because it makes their lack of productivity look bad.
So sorry sweetheart, if you want to look better, just start doing work yourself and then you don't have to worry about my work making you look bad.4 -
I just hate it when a co-worker says "AS LONG AS IT WORKS. It doesn't matter how you code it as long as it outputs what the client/user wants. They don't check how you code it anyway" *facepalm*
We effin' follow standards so that it will be convenient for everybody!
Bad code is still bad code if you don't follow standards even if it works.4 -
So that calculator now open source was a diversion? Too bad didn't work ...random afraid to lose data no more games for you! still can't abandon windows t_t haven't updated in a year4
-
This picture represents a whole lot of things for me in software development when it comes to bad design or security... You add a new feature along the way and it seems to work well - but basically you f-ed everything up.5
-
IBM, because I work in there.
Well maybe it wouldn't be as bad if I didn't work at command centre. From the beginning I did my best to get a promotion, but it resulted in me having shitton of workload and no raise. Maybe it's just shitty management tho. But still. -
Coding with a shotgun... Like when I'm tired I change a parameter again and again hoping it'll work randomly. I'm a bad person :/1
-
Unpopular opinion:
Ubuntu is a dumb piece of shit with so many bugs lying around, especially when you try to get an alternative to Unity or Gnome.
Windows does have bugs too, but at least I don't run into six new bugs everyday which are so bad I can't even work.5 -
I had to bite my tongue today when the MD and my colleague started to have a conversation about remote working "not working". It doesn't ******* work if you sit at your mom's kitchen table, cramped around "the team" while all using laptops without additional monitors.... yeah sure, my 3 monitors, large desk, peace and quiet and the ability to go to the bathroom without a security card "doesn't work" and is such a bad environment to get stuff done. ARGGGGG2
-
I'm so fucking sick of pouring hours of work into providing application code for someone who could give two shits about what I've done -- instead he completely fixates on what's missing or broken -- nevermind that I completely eliminated a bad UI thread bottleneck.
Sometimes I swear that coding is a thankless job and people just expect miracles.1 -
god i despise these "javascript is bad" articles. everyone seems to be jumping onto that train ever since the WAT talk.
javascript is a *weakly* typed language with implicit type conversions, that's why `{} + []` gives you `0`.
it is not easy to be the most widely used language, and to maintain compatibility across varying platforms.
please think twice before dismissing hard work.
/rant34 -
CTO for the picture.
This is so real, people are having a bad time because of the covid-19, productivity could be affected by this, my colleagues are having a hard time since they cant realy separate work from work anymore, the situation is hard as it is, i hope we all get through this.
Please Give Loving Comments below so i can show this to my dev/non dev friends that are having a hard time.11 -
Bring my stress ball to work.
It keeps rolling on the floor, so I have to chase it around.😿
How can you guys handle this bad boy -
Debugging JS,
*uses chrome devtools*, breakpoints work, everything loads, can work on fixing bug
*uses firefox devtools*, takes more time than IE to show up, the UI doesn't show up, can cry in the corner.
Why is firefox debugger so bad :/6 -
Me after a good day at work: “Hmmmm… I like it here. I can stay for at least a year”
Me after a bad day at work: “Fuck this. I should apply for jobs elsewhere. Fuck Capitalism”6 -
My life in the university. Part 2.
It's you pick bad, the work is yours or even their. Choose wise!1 -
I just love when:
Programmer: I just hate people working with X language. They are so average and can't reach a thing...
Me: Yes, of course, but you also work but with the X full-time, right?
Programmer: Well yes, why?
Me: oh nothing, just wondered...
And in my career I've seen so many cases like this... They all whine that X is bad, Y is for noobs but still continue to work with it themselves...4 -
My work computer is currently so slow, I actually have a legitimate reason for browsing devRant.
Is that good or bad?2 -
Freelance client calls freaking out because she needed the website changes done by yesterday morning because she had some huge meeting with potential investors....
I feel bad but I don't, she never told me anything about needing it done by Sunday morning.
This is exactly why I hate freelance work. Lack of communication and then they blame you5 -
Bad: i got told that i need to stop playing overwatch @ work
Good: so they gave me a bunch of udemy courses1 -
Guys, I have all symptoms of wasting time in bad work (can't stop thinking about it, anxious, can't relax, can't focus on a hobby, etc.)
But - how the hell you can know if next company won't be even worse? How can you be at least basically sure that today's "bad" isn't that bad in comparison to your next employer?6 -
When the work isn't as interesting as I'd like, sometimes I accomplish the easiest, smallest incremental task and waste time the rest of the day.
I guess because it feels like work, I'd rather apply minimal effort. It's a bad habit, and one I'm trying to break. -
If got to do some bugfixing at work today.
Looking through code:
if (x !== undefined || x !== null){
I want the person who wrote this to wear the ugliest and scratchiest christmas sweater with "i write bad code" written on it15 -
In highschool i was pretty much high all the time, my friend and i had to make a project for our final year and although I'd work on it, my stoned ass couldn't concentrate whatsoever and I'd always be watching netflix in class.. needless to say, we got a pretty bad grade and failed the class3
-
just might have optimised myself away by recommending a software to my boss which does 90% of the tools i'm maintaining right now...wondering if i will still be in this chair next year3
-
How do you judge the ability of the candidates during the interview?
Sometimes I find it hard to score their ability. I have seen some candidates with x years on paper yet does not know git more than push and pull.
Also there are few who didnt do very well at the interview, however we hired and doing quite well at work.
(As I also had a hard time getting a job before, I sometimes feel bad to reject some who seems to have good personality but didnt do well at work)5 -
When applying for your first ever job, which of the following is/are/can be acceptable?
- Bad company culture
- Slavery pay
- Bad location
- No benefits (health care, etc.)
- No coffee/free snacks
- Long working hours/Lot of overtime work
- (Other)
🙄😐4 -
How do u recover from bad reputation at work? Like, false accusations and wrong perceptions about you which you have no control over? Should you guard your reputation or should you just stop caring what other people think?5
-
I do wish that we could have a dev dating site. Why? Cause I cannot give my girlfriend enough time and then she gets moody and then this leads to breakup.
Now I have to freaking choose between her or code this is bad, bad.
If we devs get dev gf she knows how things work and things would work out16 -
So i already worked 40 hours this week and i have still 8 more hours to go.
Made a shift from 08:30 till 23:30 and wannabe lead had the guts to tell me i could work from home.
Maybe it's not a bad idea to leave the office.
And fucking quit1 -
My first job and the amount of bad code I had to work with influenced my coding style a lot.
One thing is reading about bad examples. Another thing is it to maintain these bad examples.3 -
Prediction of a future rant:
Guys I'm starting a Devrant addiction recovery movement.
I've become addicted since it fills me with delight to read all the rants.
It's so bad that my work has suffered.
The first step is admitting I have a problem
Actually it doesn't matter, all my projects get canceled anyway so noone noticed I stopped coding.5 -
So one of my co-partner in a website development business we started, took up back end responsibilities from me, didn't complete a simple form handling in 3 months and then complained the 3rd partner that it was my work and I didn't do it and now I am the bad guy.
FUCK YOU BRO!6 -
You want me to work in-loco, even thought my job can be done remotely? That's fine.
Your company's offices are located in a expensive district of a expensive European capital? That's fine too.
You want to pay me a salary so low, that I can only afford to live 2 hours away from work? Fuck That!!!
If your company is in a expensive location, either offer me a high salary or stop bothering me with bad job offers. -
I can't for the life of me believe how anybody and fuck up a library so bad.
It's easily over a decade old and one of the core groups of libraries we use.
The abstractions suck so bad it's a pain trying to get anything to work.
What's worse is there's no future for it. Nobody dares to refactor this or some shit in a 20yo system might break. Fml1 -
I hate my current work with this piece of bad written legacy $hit. As 2 year old 'junior' without any code review and mentor I feel depressed. I should improve my skills at home and run away from it.
F#$ck you, corpo.3 -
I worked a few times for free until the client decided he doesn't need anymore that product so he doesn't need to pay me.
From that moment i started to ask for advance payments, but a lot of times I calculated incorrectly the real price of my work miscalculating the number of hours it will take, ending working for less than 3€ per hour...
I love freelancing, but I'm really bad at evaluating my work.5 -
I feel bad for a college:
She's an android developer, and i used to do ionic and now i moved to web.
Our manager asked her to learn ionic for some project and let me help her arround, i did, and she started working on that project, the result was bad for the fact that js itself is now to her, as for angular/ionic, and lets not talk about the cordova shit .. The problem is that he's blaming her and letting her work for extra hours to fix the issues .. I tried my best to help her, but i'm still feeling bad for her, thats not her fault that her manager let her jump into some shitty situation using some framework (language even) thats far from her knowledge. -
Maybe it's just me, but taking dev work from a little side gig to a salaried career is more difficult than I thought it'd be. Soooo many applications going out with nothing back, recruiters ghosting...maybe it's just a bad time for jobs in general but good lord is it exhausting and stressing me the hell out.8
-
I'm very bad at reading someones code. For example when someone on uni asks me to help him with code I just write it from scratch, I can't find the mistake or even understand thoughts of this person. I'm afraid that when I'm going to work in team I'll be useless. Can I even do something with this?5
-
Not really trying to, but probably should try to fix this bad, bad habit…
I keep wanting to fix and improve everything - and I keep taking notes, writing action plans et fucking cetera to the point the amount of work that should be done and I want to do is driving me insane. And they should all get done now!
In short, I should really either learn to focus on just one thing at a time for a meaningful period - or just cease to give a fuck. Either could work.2 -
Some minutes ago our firewall in office overheated, no internet, no network, no real way to work some time for coffee and nerd talk - not bad at all1
-
Been depressed and bored for the past two days, wish I'm always like this. why?
I learned how to MVVM in WPF and Android.
If only Apple creates something similar to what Microsoft and Google did for data binding.
If it exists please let me know :)9 -
remote work is so much better for me.. i think something is wrong with me because little things my co-workers do like clearing their throats, them slamming their keyboards and sometimes the way they laugh or even the way they speak... pisses me off so bad. OMG!!! even putting on headphones does not help. I wish i could ignore all that.
-
Starting a project with someone that programs like an idiot on steroids. Like, why are you using 20 switch statements to set a variable instead of of just a single line linear expression. I removed hundreds of lines from one of this ass's files. I've never seen such a complicated mess of garbage.5
-
Im thinking about leaving my employer because I keep getting way too much work on my plate, people get annoyed that its not done in time and tell me that i should tell them if im getting too much work.
So i tell them its to much and our deadlines are to tight, then i just get told "this is how we always work, we just gotta finish things faster and better"...
Another one is that our HR/office manager keeps bugging me about setting up SMART goals so i can prove my value to the company and that its my responsibility to do so if i want a pay raise (even if im already underpaid)...
Im sorry but if you wanna keep me, you gotta give me some damn incentive to stay...
Ive been putting up with it sofar because i like the office and the people and the majority of the work itself and i really dont wanna go looking for another job because im really bad at it... but wtf... im so done with all the "how does this work" questions too...
tl;dr: getting negative reviews because im bad at my own evaluation is gonna make me quit probably, while im being praised for all other work i do4 -
How do you teach non-technical coworkers to trust you're doing your work to the best of your ability? You know the type, they're used to having everything measured by simple numbers. Number big = good work. Number small = bad work or slacking off. The moment they run into something that doesn't work like this, their heads explode.4
-
My GOTG pop figures are my favorite items on my desk. Whenever I have a bad day at work, I make their heads move and that cheers me up :P Drax is missing though2
-
I just copy-pasted this into 4 of my apps and republished them.
It's part of my own C# library that removes the need to write boilerplate code.
https://github.com/allanx2000/...
(I have a Merged library with some added NET 4.5 conveniences but that's not check-in)
In general, I think making computers do all the grunt work makes me a bad-ass.3 -
Best: Started working successfully, raised my self confidence, can finally see my future
Worst: Started feeling the effects of too much work on my mental and physical health (bad eyesight, back pain, weight...)2 -
Fuck timesheet
It's bad enough someone fucking disturb you in the middle of great thoughts. What's worse, you're QUESTIONED where the fuck your time was spent. So you need to work out how much time you have been disturbed, and put in the fucking timesheet!
What a fucking joke! As if we have too much time for meaningful stuff.8 -
Algorithms teacher: I don't know how to work this thing. (computer) ... Students constantly have to go up front and help him do basic computer stuff. Even worse, he types with two fingers! Why education system must you suck so bad???6
-
Today somebody at work asked why they couldn't change a primary key.
Not joking.
Are you fucking kidding me?? There's a reason SSMS doesn't allow it.. because BAD SHIT HAPPENS if you do.2 -
Did so much work today that my ring finger on my right hand is actually sore from pressing the enter key.
Too bad all that code belongs to my job and not me.6 -
I've always wanted to post a rant here whenever I get pissed about something at work mostly because of the management and the people I work with. It rarely happenes but if I encounter one, I start to post something and end up changing my mind about not posting it because I'm afraid I am not the only devranter on our team or even other teams that I work with and they might figure out that it was me ranting because of the details I include in the rant. So I try to calm down instead and try to find a way to handle the situation.
Damn I'm never getting my free stress ball here6 -
After working with a bunch of people it occurred to me that almost anyone can work and learn for most IT positions. This is something that most people will realize, especially if they work with newbies that learn on the go. There are exceptions of course, but most companies are just making crud apps with their business logic.
What I wonder then is, why is it that the way hiring is done seems to be completely against this idea? Rather than whining about recruiters and bad interviews, I am curious about why this is so common. What is it that a lot of companies think or see that make their hiring process so bad or convoluted?11 -
Do you get informed about the reasons behind business decisions in your job?
That wasn't the case in my last job and I dreaded my code for that reason.
I think this kind of lack of information can lead to bad engineering decisions and unstructured code. Also, this doesn't lead to the needed ownership of your work.
What do you think?3 -
It feels weird now. I don't really have much to rant about. That's partially cause I haven't been doing much dev work lately (but the bit I have done, everything's been fine). My personal life is going fucking great for once, so nothing to worry about there (the girl I'm talking to is so fucking sweet, and just amazing overall)
Life is fucking good guys. I hope everyone that might have had a bad day or a bad week or whatever feels better soon. -
Today was a bad dev day working on a shitty React project. Not that React in itself is bad, but it can be hell to work with when the code is a big pile a crap full of anti pattern code. I spent the day refactoring to try to fix a bug, but to no avail. It would take days if not weeks to put some order in this mess and to prevent such bugs.6
-
When the code is so bad that fixing one thing breaks 10 other things because the code was made to work with broken code.3
-
Biggest sin
Due to lack of time, I named all the variables in my project without logic,
Like temp1,str1, function dojson etc
Lord be with the dev who's gonna work on that project
PS I am not a bad person, it is the time that made do such things -
I am surrounded by incompetent fucking idiots, from the team lead that does a half arsed job at coding and then wonders why nothing further down the chain works to whole component teams that seem to be lagging so far behind they don't even know what the current code base looks like.
And who's in the middle of it all running around fixing all the problems these fucktards create, why yes it's me.
I would leave to let it implode and see what they'd do but I already know, they'd leave it till I got back so I could fix it all for them.
Feel like going around with a rolled up news paper and whacking each of them on the back of the head while screaming "no, bad code monkey, bad, fix your own bugs"
I hate being the go to fix it guy sometimes.1 -
Was very sick today.
Hopped over to work virtually so I can help with an issue holding up prod release.
Felt pretty awesome about the whole deal.
Than realized three things:
1- this was a bad example to junior devs.
2- stole learning experience from other devs
3- I am leaving this company. I should have allowed the weaning process to start2 -
My eyes are opening to a sad reality. It's not just software - people in every industry are as bad at their work as they can get away with.
On the bright side it means that a person who excels at one thing has a shot at excelling at others. Mediocrity is everywhere.6 -
sudo pacman -Syu --force
sudo reboot
Openfire and owncloud no longer work.
sudo systemstl status openfire
Java exception relating to SQL.
sudo systemstl status mariadb
No such service mariadb
WTF why would that get uninstalled, how the hell.
sudo pacman -S mariadb
Everything now works again
Arch can be a confusing place
😺
Maybe that force was a bad idea.5 -
One of my bad dev habits is that I tend to take up too much work because a lot of devs I had to work with seemed not competent enough. It's a bad habit because I get way overworked which influences code quality and deadlines.
I have to learn to trust more in others and give up some responsibility... it's hard though.
I think a big influence on my mindset has been that I never worked in a team bigger than 4 developers and I had way more experience in web dev than the others.
I sometimes may appear as an arrogant prick, but it's not intentional.9 -
Today the government from Costa Rica announced their solution to tax double any UBER charge registered to debit/credit cards.
Their logic is to pretty much do it for any commerce that includes the letters UBER. Like something out of your first Unity C++lesson2 -
"It takes confidence to throw work away … When people first start drawing, they’re often reluctant to redo parts that aren’t right … they convince themselves that the drawing is not that bad, really — in fact, maybe they meant it to look that way." - Paul Graham
-
We had to finish a student project, our project leader had done some work on the project before and his algorithm to detect an event was complete bullcrap.
I took it in my hands to rewrite the algorithm with the risk that it doesn‘t work and i hadn‘t done any work i could show, which would result in a bad grade.
Luckily my algorithm worked better in orders of magnitude and we managed to deliver on time -
I just came across a website where someone used a <marquee> *and* a <blink> tag. That was the most interesting thing that happened to me all week so far. Too bad (luckily) blink doesn't work anymore.7
-
Reviewing and explaining 1 year old bad application logic to your client because he asked for it and now he can't remember how the application work.
-
Considering that I'm the designer on most projects and work mostly frontend... Well yeah I'm a bad experience for myself from times to times 🤔 but at least I know my tools and web limitations (haven read others rants about ignorant designers).. so.. that's something 🎉
-
I will NEVER work in customer support. When my friend said that, I thought ,,it can't be that bad". Now I understand him. Well, once you experience how it is talking with that idiots... Two fucking senceless hours. Words cannot explain how much i hate it.
-
You know your day is gonna be bad when it's Monday and you are told to work on a badly written legacy flash application!
-
Some <super smart> person ran DHCP in production lab (without disconnecting from main network and/or using firewall)
, now the admin turned all the ports off and went home.
Traffic gens are also unavailable now so are upgrade servers.
Result: I can't run my work over the weekend and the reports are expected on Monday.
Not so bad : I'll run on Monday.
Bad part : This fucking shit takes 2 days to do everything on the rack.3 -
Rage ? at work ?
my employer says I'm already toxic and ungrateful. If i get a third bad adjective ill be out of the door !
Judging by the work load and type im getting these days id say they are trying to get me to open that door and leave myself.
Hell, i would love to if i were not being ghosted by other companies or offered less compensation -
Ugh. Those bad sector hard drives are pissing me off! I can't even install Windows 7 properly because some fucking bad sectors are on drive! COULD YOU FUCKING OMIT THEM, SO I CAN FINALLY INSTALL THE FUCKING WINDOWS ON MY MOM'S COWORKER'S COMPUTER AND FUCKING GO HOME!? I'm so pissed off! Now I have to fucking change the OS in hope that it will do the trick. AND GUESS WHAT!? It fucking won't work and the OS will crash more often! AAAARGH YOU SON OF A FEMALE DOG JUST OMIT THE FUCKING SECTORS! (╯°□°)╯︵┻━┻4
-
My shit job sucks so much.
How bad, you ask?
Well, let me give you some perspective.
It sucks so bad, that I took a small freelance job ... not much $$$ ... and I actually liked it.
Normally they suck so bad and get so way out of hand that I end up regretting it. Work sucks so bad, it made me happy to something else. -
I’m so fucking tired of having to work with shitty code day in and day out and not being able to optimize it. I want to quit so bad without having a job lined up… I fucking hate being a developer now thanks to these fucking pieces of shit.6
-
NDAs for me are a good predictor for a bad client or client relationship.
Doesn't work so well for larger cos, and it's not unusual for them to require one anyway.
I charge a fairly high flat fee for signing one. The people who won't pay probably don't need the NDA anyway and were going to be problematic.3 -
I've read some posts about how bad Windows is lately and I'm just wondering how some can break their installations so bad.. I mean like multiple BSODs just for installing updates, or just don't get their windows to work at all. I've been using win next to Linux(Debian/Ubuntu) for quite some time now and never had those kind of problems, also on pure Windows 7/10 PCs.2
-
I fucking hate my job! This site sucks ass and I have no motivation to work on it! Would love to get a new job with a fresh sleek site, but unfortunately my autism kicks in bad during technical interviews. Oh fuck me!5
-
why don't they like the interns at work? one little mistake, and you're fucked. everyone thinks you weren't a good choice to work on that team. they think if i'm an intern (and especially - a girl) then i'm dumb... like??? honestly, it makes me feel so bad and i myself start to feel like i'm truly dumb :(8
-
Current mood: Preparing a communication plan for how to explain why we have decided to throw out the entire 3-years-worth-of-work code base for the frontend project we have inherited and rewrite it from zero because it's just. THAT. BAD.3
-
The good: dotnet core RTM
The bad: my previous shitty work place, their shitty product, the very shitty TL that had no fucking idea how to lead or manage the team
The ugly: the shit storm I dropped on TL, group leader, CEO/CTO when I left... -
Switching workplace after new year.
Already told boss I'm quitting last week. And it is like as soon as It was official I lost all patience with the company bullshit and lost the little interest I had left for my daily work. The codebase seemes bad before but now it feel 100x worse.
Work ethic keeps me from doing nothing but man I just want to get out.
Will be so nice to work with a new project and code base.1 -
mother fucking is this joke I work on everything and credit goes to PM. Is this is a joke? What pm will do if developer doesn’t develop then she will just blame I got bad developer.1
-
Started making 5 figure income a month while working for myself. But have no friends and no interests to talk about besides work. Im a really bad case of "all work and no play makes the jack a dull boy". I spent last 8 years to achieve that. Is that good or bad? Im so much lost in my work that normal living sounds so boring at this point10
-
why is every auth provider utter and complete shit?
why are docs and tutorials that try to teach auth so complete shit?
No wonder there are so many security holes everywhere, nobody bothers to make it simple for the next person.
Next time people that cry about security/bad auth, and work in that field, this one is for you:5 -
Before rant (introduction): I'm the kind of dev that is a procrastinator by default, it takes me a huge amount of effort to avoid this bad habit.
Rant:
So, I'm going on vacation next week and finished all my shores on Monday. As I'm about to go on vacation, my team leader is avoiding giving me work so that it doesn't stay half way when I leave.
The problem is, this is the third day that I arrive at the office knowing that I will be there for 8 hours wasting my time not doing shit and looking at the screen!!!
The worst part is that if I get this bad habit going, it will stay and I will start to procrastinate a lot if I don't work to do fast5 -
Join a team that understands technical debt and actively squashes it...
Yes I am having a bad day, or should I say month, because I have to work to pay down other people's debt... -
I hate applying for jobs. It makes me so depressed. Most of the postings online are just 1000s of recruiters. Most of the jobs im not qualified for. It just stresses me out. I don't want to work for a bad company again. I really want this next one to be the one :(6
-
This year I graduated from high school and started a dual curriculum (50% practical work at a company, 50% theory at university) and after four months I can without a doubt say:
I am not enjoying it at all.6 -
Have had multiple interview rejections already at 20. Strongly feel I am bad at it.
Maybe it's because these are my first few interviews and/or that I'm still in college and don't realise how interviews work.
Really hard not to grudge the interviewer after a rejection. Cunts all of them.
Share your story/opinion if you feel like.2 -
First day at work and after seeing the codebase and how everyone's talking about the code, I'm pretty sure I don't have imposter syndrome, I'm just that bad...13
-
I hate mondays. Everyone in the company is in a bad mood, nobody wants to work and the clients are annoying. Mondays should be abolished.
No one asks us developers about our mood and that we spent the weekend working instead of lazing around and having a party.
I have decided to avoid contact with clients and companies on Monday.1 -
Someone has to start manufacturing quality HUD glasses...
Imagine the possibilities and comfort...
no more neckpain from crouching above your laptop/tablet/smartphone, imagine the navigation systems, imagine you could read messages, articles, code, watch videos whatever you are doing, even work on your code with some kind of keyboard (or with speech recognition)
I want this soo bad..3 -
I've been waiting for over a week to get permission to add finished code to a part of our intranet site. My work have been delayed. Had to tell people to wait. Makes me look bad.
I have read access. It's nothing top secret. It's literally about some guy not ticking a checkbox for whatever reason. -
I spend more time reading bad written documentations with ugly examples that don't work (and anyways won't apply to other use cases) and reading about new concepts and new frameworks that should increase productivity, instead than actually write code and program.
Yes, it's increasing productivity, but it's not fun anymore -
i received a job offer to work at area 51 on extremely sophisticated projects primarily as a c++ engineer. this is the highest pay offer i have ever seen, which i can not discuss right now, but what else to expect when you work for the government. i have bad perception about this. should i take this job or refuse?5
-
Nothing like having your hands full with work projects, then getting a message from your, not so technically knowledgeable, dad, which says that he's going to remove linux from your old laptop and replace it woth windows.
By himself.....
Tried talking him out of it, but je's adamant about it.
Should I call an ambulance?
I also feel really bad for my old laptop now -

Please enjoy this customer review I intercepted. Guess the company type and name that requested the feedback.
"______ drivers liberally show how bad it is to work for these companies.
Three quarters of all packages arrive damaged.
They park wherever they want.
No regard for traffic, people, property nor parcels.
Redefining rock bottom.
Not this delivery. Always. Everywhere. For a strong decade now."10 -
I have the bad luck to deal with clients who want to phonecall me. "It's quicker", they say.
I hate that, Im not asking them to use Trello, but at least write an email...
Its clear they didn't work seriously in their lifes.
I usually switch off the phone all day.5 -
Has this ever happened to you? Some code you're trying to execute does not work at home. Then the next day when you're showing it to the team it works perfectly (yes, I know I'm a bad coder). 😁 programming: the art of creating things without knowing how you did it3
-
Feels bad to admit it, but I constantly work over hours and on holidays in the past year. The company is in a merger and complete overhaul of two internal systems landed on me, in addition to some other "role hats" I'm wearing.
Deadlines are unrealistic to fit in regular hours, but at least my immediate manager recognizes that and is supportive with extra work flexibility and bonuses every couple of months.
I keep calming myself down that this is temporary, just gotta hit those initial deadlines. Sounds a bit foolish, but I'm hopeful.
They are a good company to work for, and I've been with them from mid 2015. -
I saw one of my coworkers do a multi step bus ticket purchase in one file (we use angular 4) instead of using components he just hide and show the sections, resulting in a class that have about 2000 lines of code, unused variables, unused functions o just functions that console.log something, and many many lines of declaring variables. I tried to fix that, but this crazy deadlines were fucking with me3
-
How many Devranters are in this situation of being paid to do “fake work”?
https://businessinsider.com/tech-in...11 -
This is getting bad, I’ve legit lost track of how many Friday nights in a row I’ve had to work implementations. I know it could be much, much worse. I’m overall very fortunate, but sheesh this is getting old.2
-
Android Java came a long way since I've stopped programming for it 5 years ago. Now you've got nice dependency injection, storage helpers and good hybrid solutions. So, curious as I am, I asked to work on some bug fixes in the Android application at work. Bad choice.
"Welcome back!" said the nullpointers, "We've missed you!"2 -
Have you ever tried to share your very simple project on FB groups which you just learned how to build? I got a lot of cheerful remarks and 2 to 3 haters. I don't know why they're trying to hate on but I'm just sharing my work and code. How do u not get a bad day and continue to improve yourself with this type of situation?3
-
I was not such a coffee person, but now at work, I really get it.
it's a sin to say bad about Coffee as a developer.3 -
I feel like working in Visual Studio is gonna lead to me developing really bad habits. Whenever I save, VS locks up for about 15 seconds, completely killing my momentum when I'm used to habitually saving all the time. I'm starting to consider not saving my work as often, despite knowing it'll come to bite me in the ass eventually.9
-
Today I learnt by hard, that even best management don't want to hear how bad things are.
You're supposed to shut up, and make things shine.
You can't fix few years of sh*t in 3 months? You can't work with people who don't understand basics? You can't fake results to show to the management?
Too bad...13 -
One thing I have realised these days is that I don't like the work from home setup.
Maybe it's the because of the bad working environment.
I actually appreciate office space more now. Once, out of office, it was easier to zone out of work mode and I didn't feel this much tired when working in office.1 -
I'm at that point again where I question whether I want to still do computer stuff for work, but this time I kinda want to do part-time computer work and part-time physical work instead..
If my body is this bad when I'm not even 30, I wonder how I can do this sedentary job until retirement..3 -
2 things that piss me off as a professional developer doing contract work...
1. A fellow dev accepts a meeting invite, doesn’t show up and won’t pick up the phone.
2. A fellow dev taking a meeting in a noisy place with bad wifi.
This guy has now managed to pull #1 last week and #2 this week... -

I was just about home from a long day of work and just blew a tire on my truck. Not flat, blew.
That wasn’t the bad part. I was so excited to get home since I figured out a bug in my code while I was at work that I had been trying to fix for a while now.
By the time I got my tire on, I had no idea how to solve the bug. -
ok. i am not a professional dev. today i am at a workshop to learn about a new software for my profession. instead of concentrating about the functions all i can do is to bother about bad ui and ux and the bad excuses from the developer why this and that doesn't work. seems to be quite a hasty development.

GRAAAAAGH I WANT A DEV JOB SO BAD
Developers who rant about their dev jobs sound ungrateful to me. At least you don't work in IT.5 -

I usually don't get attached to the company I work for. Rather I'm more attached to the work what I do.
But I don't know what happened to me today! When I resigned from my company, somewhere deep down, I felt bad! 😥4 -

Do you guys live a healthy life? Or are some of us here like the stereotypical dev who sits behind a desk eating bad gaining the pounds while stressing the fuck over code lmao
Personally I use to be quite active but now I'm getting back into bad habits and have started to notice that I'm stress eating <.< and choosing dev work over exercise...7 -
Anyone have any experience (good or bad) getting work through Hired.com? I signed up today and am curious if I should expect anything from it

Is it possible to have an "epistemological bug crisis"? Because i feel like everything I referred to as bugs in my early career weren't true bugs, they were just bad programming or architecture flaws. I feel like real "bugs" are weird issues with the language, compiler, module, etc... that should work one way but work another way. Anyone else had that experience?
This gives rise to the secondary question: who perpetuates the idea that bugs are just "anything wrong with the current codebase"?3 -
So I bought a gtx1650 gpu for my old phenom II X4 pc. It didn’t work – the screen vent black in like five minutes after powering up the pc.
I was disappointed, but instead of returning the gpu, I bought all the other components to build a new pc on ryzen cpu. Including the gpu, it all was like $400 and I still have all my old parts to sale.
Now I’m here, playing all the latest games like doom and wolfenstein on ultra in 1080p 60fps and I’m more than happy.
I basically found a way to convert my bad experience into good experience. I’m just off my therapy, so all that bad experiences that may seem insignificant are a big deal for me.
I didn’t knew it was possible to make a good emotions out of bad emotions that easy. If only I knew the way to apply this strategy for any arbitrary situation.
(please miss me with that boomer bullshit like “nothing is wrong stop whining and get over it” etc. I’ve been there, I’ve done that and I needed medical treatment afterwards. “Getting over it” just doesn’t work)6 -
Social media is bad for your self image. When you look at LinkedIn, everybody is making super cool applications and sites everybody just loves!
My work is more of a collection of bad designs intended to inspire more belief in the oncoming failcascade that is the next client's marketing brainfart hoping for happenstance but being shattered on the impervious anvil of shattered hopes and dreams.
It's a shitshow, but at least I get to press all the buttons to advance the stupid plot of a bad comedy.1 -
Stress in work, pressure that you are failing. Don’t worry, live the bad days until you reach the good once.2

I've been drunk quite a lot lately, yet i'm not tryna forget or quit anything. Am i getting alcoholic ? This create a lot of bad situation going around my life, sleep deprivation, health problem, etc..
Am i thinking my work and my company to seriously? Last time i work too hard, i got hospitalized for exhaustion. My brain can't stop thinking, always getting left and right, here and there. Am i getting crazy?13 -
My first ever system... It was bad, no coding standards, no reusing, no pattern, no nothing. I really don't know how I managed to make it work.

Not a bad job start, but disconcerting. First day at work, "The job we hired you for is no longer needed. We will find something for you to do." It worked out fine as time went by though.

So, if I do the work of two people, shouldn't I get two salaries?? Deadweight strikes again. I'm planning to rewrite two months(part time) worth of work done in android sdk. Wanna go for a hybrid framework. Is this a bad idea? Which framework do you suggest as far as stability is concerned? I don't care about ease of learning, new languages don't bother me2

Worst mistake? Well nothing to bad since it only affected me. Tried out of curiosity to instantate an object every frame in unity that ran an infinite loop every frame. It crashed not only unity but also my computer resulting in about an hour of lost work :P

So... Working alone in a hollyday, at night .
Turning mill operator.
Started working here 2 months ago.
Had to stop a machine. They like to work by brute force here, so a tool is braking on every piece I try to make...
Might just go home early.
I know what the problem is and how to solve it, but I'm new here, I'm not going to tell the engenheir how these very expensive machines should operate.
Problem is: cutting tool should cut at most 1mm per passage, they program only one passage so its cutting maybe 10mm each time.
I just had to change a few parameters in the variables for cutting depth... But they will never learn while operators solve that problem behind the boss back. So machine is resting.
Also have no more pieces to work in the other machines... They don't pay well, so 4 people left just last month for better jobs and now there isn't enough workers to keep production.
Why do people still use 1940's methods in today's companies?2 -
Football/futbol/soccer analogy:
Frontend engineers are like strikers - you see their work, good and bad, and you don’t notice how many contribute to their success. Backend engineers are like goalies - you only really notice when they do a _bad_ job and don’t see how many things contribute to their failure.5 -
I work with a lot of people around the world, since 2 years ago almost.
My english is really BAD and I dont understand why is too difficult to my improve it.
Is very difficult to my write, speak and listen in english.
I really have a problem?? My mind comes white when I am in a meeting in english. I feel like a durp turtle...8 -
It is quite disappointing when some developers only rely on using libraries / dependencies(or whatever you call it) rather than do it manually. I know it can make the work faster but still using too much libraries will make it worst. It’s not bad using libraries, but if you use too much libraries it doesn’t degrade the performance of the app ( too much memory space when you only need that certain action and you include the whole library) but when the library becomes deprecated and no updates that might cause a problem.
It’s not bad using libraries, but not too much.2 -

Intern spent about a week trying to set up a local ruby on rails environment. Yeah, this is not really on topic, it wasn't that bad, but it's what comes to mind.
I don't know who modelled the databases I've had to work with these past months but god damn it no fucking normalization anywhere. Inconsistent data just cost me my morning.1 -
So, Our company called us back to office after 8 month.. and reason was our boss is giving.. You guys may be work on bed.. It is bad for your back.. Here we will provide you better working enviornment and please do carry your laptop to office :P
But I think its okay to work from office.. Once I was excited to work from home. But dude you can learn from the person sitting next to you, discuss things around,, can see what others are doing.. Its a progress. At home you are just u and laptop :)
Personally I think its better to work under someone superior obvious he/she should be technical and egoless.. then its more fun.3 -
If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything.
No one said that standing for something can have u feeling so conflicted.
Currently 'striking' because I haven't been paid for the month of January. Haven't been to work and haven't done any work (except support requests from a client we work with)
I have recently been pretty adamant about my conditions at work but I do feel a little unreasonable as the reason they can't seem to pay me seems to be some issue with the bank. However on the other hand I do not appreciate that I have not been contacted or informed about how the situation is being dealt with since Monday.
Am I being unreasonable?? Or have I been in a bad situation for so long that it seems wrong to call it out??3 -

Long time no rant..
Although work is way too much and stressful, things are actually not too bad at all..back to the office (voluntary), got back into to a routine, got a raise way below what it should be, lots of "off the books" overtime that I'll never be able to compensate, but.. still not to bad at all.. feeling better than I have for the last couple of years.. 👌 -
Sometimes, switching coding languages can be bad if they are the same "kind".
Found myself trying to use C# concept, keywords and syntax while doing Java.
That can be kinda frustrating when one is your main language at work and the other is just for side personnal project1 -
New to dr. And love so many story here.
Currently work on shader project which i hate and very bad at.
Anyone know good place to l arn different type of shader? I have some badic knowledge how glsl work. But not enough knowledge on how to make cool stuff.
Also trying to add the texture. Not work yet tho ;(2 -
In my internship, I was assigned for back-end development. I'm a first years student, so it's enough work for me. But I'm also making documents to be approved by other services (very frenchie) and I'm not allowed to code while these documents are not validated. And now, they are trying to make me do front-end and all the design validation process etc...
I can't see this hierarchy anymore, I'm hating work... -

Is it considered greedy when you are accepting job interviews even though you decently love your current job, have decent work balance and benefits and your boss trusts you?
I kinda feel bad being curious on what other companies have to offer for my skills but I don't necessarily plan to accept any new offer.4 -

I've never really understand why i should use tools with bad UI or even command line if it's not really necessary! I'm mean, we've FUCKING 2017, give me a proper UI! I want to work, not search every damn feature of the tool!

Just got a new work laptop which is absolutely awesome. Only bad thing is that i can't transfer the sticker swag :/4

not sure if actual bad habit, or just a natural consequence of what i'm writing often being de-facto "exploratory code" so the "bad habit" is actually the right choice, or...
but very often when i finish a functionality and look at the first version of the code, and realize how bad it is, and how it blocks me to implement following features... rather than just fix/improve that code, i just want to nuke all of it and write it from scratch again, and "better this time", because it seems like much less work and effort than trying to gradually fix it "in-place".
it definitely feels like a bad habit though, because it often results in me deleting and implementing to completion the same thing 4 times in a row. -
Pro tip. Don't start to learn react and redux when you have to Support 6 fcking Apps in jquery, plain Javascript and this bad boy Razor. You will kill yourself when you have to work on it. I nearly cried today because of this...

On my way home from work using public transport and I want to enjoy some rants.

It's kind of depressing looking at how bad the source code has transformed from a previous project that I had planned, designed, and did the initial implementation.
But I guess this is the problem of having developers who don't really care about the quality of their work, especially when it comes to PHP. -
So the saga continues…
If you’ve read my previous posts welcome if not please read for some context.
So I got into a call with my line manager today after the intro, without me even bringing it up he goes “so this snr position, we’re hiring this overseas…” - erm right so that’s been shot down, amazing call so far hopes of a promotion dashed with the first five minutes even though I’ve been noted as snr “material”.
Secondly onto the upgrade. I mention that I don’t see any of it listed in Aha! in 2022, so I ask why given that we all know it’s needed asap. My manager goes, “oh yeah that’s been pushed to 2023, we also looking to assemble a team together to do it” - first off why in the world was it pushed back so far and two I already got given the task to upgrade the system by my previous manager as he’ll know that it will get done right, and my new manager has said everything agreed before would stay.
So, why the hell are you looking to assemble a team when I was put in charge of the upgrade and two I was training people up while they helped work on it too.
This job. Honestly it’s turning into a nightmare.
To say I’m frustrated is an understatement.4 -
I just found a Diplo dj set from a country music festival where it was like 65-75% country music, and I gotta say it's not actually that bad. I mean I like edm and country, but I'd never guess mixing the two could actually work as well as it did12
-
I guess this is more of a work environment question than a dev one. Are you friends with your teammates/ coworkers at work ?
I’ve had some bad experiences and now I’m in a much saner environment and despite everyone being nice, some afterworks and out of work events, I still can’t quite give my full trust. Should I ? I can’t shake the feeling something is gonna go wrong if I do…
EDIT: For additional context, I work in a big company where my interactions with my colleagues are not really followed closely like they would be in a startup I guess.5 -
So, I told the interviewer that my frontend skills are bad. He said that I should not worry as the tests where backend centered, good. Later, I got the job, now the interviewer, which happens to be the head of tech in the company I work for, has assigned me two tasks involving 99% of work on the frontend.
FFS, I've been searching on Internet and reading Kendo UI documentation for 4 hours to figure how to trigger the KendoGrid editable popup with populated data to enable the user to update such data. AAAAARGH!!!1 -

At my boarding school the admins are too bad : all the 5 min the internet go out for 30s because of overload (when too many computers are downloading) and now when we must work the internet go out so we can't work....
Windows says that the proxy is not responding so it's again a big overload and the internet came back the next day thank of reboot ...
This system is soooo shity.....
And my school want to have a good image of technology....... WOW ! -
I swear it is easier to do a full-stack application all by yourself rather than make a front-end and a back-end newbie work alongside you in a way that justifies the pay being given to them by the project manager(for a freelance project).
Not that they are bad or anything, but it takes more effort to offload work to them with enough explanation to convey the expectations properly while accounting for the learning they are yet to do.1 -
Some of the clients I work with have their own in house (or outsourced) developer that works on day to day tasks. I let them know their load time was pretty bad, and gave them a list of changes. One of them was 'Properly remove content that was no longer being used'
Because adding 'display:none' on a div full of large image is definitely not helping. -

I applied for some jobs lately as I was laid of (as seen in one of my previous rants). I've sent out the last application today at 2 AM and I am already invited to the company tomorrrow as the ceo thinks I would fit the team perfectly - the bad thing about that is that they would like to see some of my previous work - the problem about that is that all my showable previous work is under NDA D:4 -
Arghhhhh working with regular expressions (already a bad start) got it working on my dev PC but it won't work on the server.
The only difference is my pc is running PCRE v8.41 and my server is running v8.42. Can't find anyone else having the same issue on SO/Google8 -
Is there a minimum amount of months I need to work for a company I'm fed up with so it doesn't look too bad on my resume when I finally quit?
I swear I keep thinking of quitting more and more every passing week.4 -
Perforce just deleted all my work from yesterday and today. Apparently using the 'update branch mapping' feature is a bad idea3

I'm super happy and full of energy but as soon as it's dark outside I become a depressed sack of shit with no drive to work on anything 😔6 -
I'm at work. It's been slow recently because our clients don't know what they want.
I just realised there's an itsy bitsy spider on my desk. Or more precisely, on my workstation.

"It takes the same amount of effort to make bad art as to make good art, and you won’t know which you’ve made until you release it into the wild. Imagine studying for a computer related course and to makeup for living expense, you go for part time jobs.
Now, is it just me or this is just a bad idea to get into a part-time job that is no where related to your study field?

Any thoughts?6 -
I know when I first got into libGDX (game engine/framework/? written in Java) and tried to bodge together UI stuff like buttons myself. I was really happy when I got buttons pretty much working as intended.
Later that day I found out that Stage exists and all my (bad) work was useless. 🙃1 -
Knew it was a bad idea to work on my project over the break, and I am stuck for a day and have to spend the new year celebration being stuck.

So this has happened before, but I think I’m gonna deliver late on this project. I really don’t want to look bad within the first six months of a new job. Someone lie to me and say it’ll all work out. 😭😭4

Frustation at its peak ..as i have been trying to figure out how to make a build system work..Now gitlab just made me open my head out of frustation . Gitlab sends me an outdated version of my repo ..again and again ..and i thought it was the effect of some bad code of mine..2

I find it very surprising that people at work are always reluctant to do code reviews. There are no standards in place and everyone is free to push whatever they want. There is Sonar but it doesn't catch bad logic. Don't know how are we going to deal with this technical debt.4

worst sin? 🤔
I guess not following any best practices, really bad formating, no comments, simply puting all code together just to make it work. I cry everytime I have to dig through my old codes 😫 such a shitty code, such a shitty programmer I was (am) 😔😓 -
I have two potential offers. A is too good (pay, hours, stability, perks). B is decent (good pay but not so stable, no idea on perks but the work seems cool). Despite better work I'm not inclined to go for B. It is from my previous interview experience rant. People seem shitty, or at least as bad as the ones I'm leaving.
I don't wanna accept A either because they are expecting a longer stay and right now I'm in a state where I don't want to commit more than 6-7 months to anything. 😞
But I don't have any other offers and there aren't any short term projects coming up in my search.
Ugh.11 -
People who generalize any technology as 'bad' or "worthless" (or worse, proclaim it is not secure, doesn't work correctly, or has specific problems it doesn't have) when the technology is widely and obviously appropriately used in practice just make themselves look bad. It's like getting mad at a hammer. It's just a tool. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you think it needs improvement, contribute to improving it. Non-constructive criticism is a waste of your time as a software developer.6

Today I spent 6 hours trying to make vnc work on ubuntu 18.04 with locked screen. Fuck.
Initial problem: can connect via vnc but the screen is black. Fuck;
I switched back the lightdm --> vnc connection works but I can only see the wallpaper. Fuck:
In the end I installed xfce.
Good part: now vnc works even with locked screen.
Bad part: the shell doesn't work anymore. Fuck.

I will never work on a project that allows time travel.
Sooner or later humanity will screw it up so bad that the only solution is to lethaly stop it from being invented.
Thats why its not invented yet!2 -
How about, instead of bitching about how bad it is that something that I had nothing to do with doesn't work, actually listen to me while I try and fix it.2

I really don't have much of any social life, and it's quite ok. I usually hang around with guys in the office every once in a while and if there is a football match going on, especially during this World cup. Maybe due to this I was even awarded a 100% raise, which is quite awesome. Nothing bad with being a loner sometimes things just work out for you, plus I get to concentrate on work a lot more than my peers. ^_^

Yesterday when I came into the office my laptop (in a workstation) could not connect to the internet because of bad ip config. The auto configuration just didn't work...
Solved the problem by opening the laptop-lid for about a second, just wtf -
suddenly windows 10 isn't so bad to use (btw rocketeer is a composer package that in windows cmd doesn't really work all that well). Took me a total of 10min to get rocketeer working (requires composer, curl, php)

How bad is SAP really? I have seen so many rants about it, but it still seems to be thriving. It is used everywhere here in India. I work at IT department of a Hospital, and even they use SAP— the only complains I have heard is it’s cost, so they are slowly replacing it with Open Source alternatives like ERPNext.2

Si this was a very good and bad week at work. The good part is I finally learned how to properly write tests. Not that I am a pro at it, but at least they don’t suck now.
The bad is I took a ticket that I now see was terribly underestimated, but hopefully I will finish it and the rest on time. -
