My fucking face when I don't have a title, still overqualified, fighting with WordPress devs on freelancer.14 -
So because of the sheer number of interviews I’ve been doing I’m starting to get a bit brazen with them since I’ve started to really not give a fuck about most of them and I’ve started to notice patterns in common lines of questioning resulting in this unexpected gem today:
Interviewer: So we always start our devs off on the bottom end of our salary band.
Dev: Either give me the top or I’m not interested.
Interviewer: 😡. But if we start you at the top of the salary band we’ll have nothing to give you later. 🥺.
Dev: No need, I’ll take the money up front. Companies don’t give raises these days anyway, it’s just a carrot to dangle in front of the naive.
Interviewer: 😡. Well if all you care about is money so focussed on money you’ll just leave if a better offer comes around!
Dev: All the more reason to give me the highest number possible to defend against that possibility.
Interviewer: 😡. But there are other devs on the team with similar experience that will be making less than you.
Dev: Sounds like they fell for the negging and guilt tripping you are currently attempting on me in order to save a buck. Salary is not based on your skills or experience anymore, it’s based on your ability to negotiate. Here’s mine.
Interviewer: ………………. I’ll pass you along to the hiring manager.
Dev: ???? wtf

Me: "I have never used Angular before but I have 4 years of experience, It's not a problem for me to study it and use it quickly".
Interviewer: "Eh no, we are searching for someone with very strong Angular skills".
Me: "That's fine, but sorry how can a junior dev with just 1 year of experience have already strong skills with Angular? He must have also strong skills with JavaScript in general and It's quite impossible".
Interviewer: "Ehh... ehm.... ehmm..."11 -

It’s tough going though because I currently make ~120k and the best offers I’ve received so far are all ~70k because “You only have 2 years experience so you couldn’t possibly have the skills to be worth 120k. You are are junior level developer and 70K is already overpaying for you. We can pay you more later™. No we will not give you that in writing”. Ah well, the hunt continues.17 -

Story of every failing tech startup (from personal experience, but a bit exaggerated):
Step 1: Come up with AMAZING idea that blows your mind!
Step 2: Run to investors to do presentation, continue to constantly repeat CLOUD, CLOUD, AI, CLOUD, MACHINE-LEARNING, MUCH WOW, MORE AI until investors are confused but mesmerized as fuck and decide to give you a shit ton of money.
Step 3: Hire all the developers you can find, a JAVA dev, a Python dev, a PHP dev, a Ruby dev, and ask them to get along with each other! I mean hey, they're adults right, they'll figure it out.
Step 4: Ask devs to launch the app, meanwhile, throw a LAUCH PARTY! HELLS YEA WE'RE ABOUT TO BE RICH BITCHES!
Step 5: Find out the hard way that no one needs a product that was launched! :/
Step 6: Pivot, and pivot next month again, and pivot again, and pivot in a middle of a pivot, and pivot pivot pivot pivot... and OH FUCK WE RAN OUT OF MONEY!8 -
Dev: This is the first version of this new app, we’re still experimenting with how it’s going to work but initial headway is looking promising. It cost very little to make, came together very quickly and is already resulting in productivity increases for users. We’re just doing a bit of code cleanup now and we’ll make a move on the next iteration.
Corporate IT: This project is being completely mishandled! In order to successfully build an app you have to determine every single requirement beforehand! It takes millions upon millions of dollars due to the complex system of governance and approval that needs to exist. Massive numbers of stakeholders need to be involved and coordinated to even make so much as a login screen! I bet your project doesn’t even have a documented list of core values.
Dev: Has you ever successfully built an app using that methodology?
Corporate IT: 😡 That’s a loaded question. I went to school to study project management and have over 25 years of experience in the field. If you had the training and experience I do you would know that tech projects are naturally very volatile and there’s nothing you can do about that!

Me a while ago talking to a recruiter over the phone. This was for a C++ dev position.
(R)ecruiter : So except for the development things, we are looking for someone who has experience configuration linux. Do you have any experience with that?
(M)e : Sure, I use Linux all the time. What do you mean.
R : Well, Just using Linux isn't enough for this position, you need to have experience in configuration Linux.
M : Well. I can't answer your question if you don't specify what you mean. Do you mean that I need to be able to install my own packages? Set up my dev environment? Bash scripting? Being able to configure my bash profile to have good aliases? Use Linux to develop software? Because I can do all of these.
M : Or do you need someone who can write Kernel modules for the OS, because I don't have any experience in that but would like to learn.
R : Oh, I don't really know what it means. But the paper says that you need to have experience configuration Linux. So what would you say your experience with that is?
Me internally : JESUS CHRIST I JUST TOLD YOU WHAT I KNOW AND WHAT I DON'T KNOW HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ASSESS ME CORRECTLY.
Me 😎 : I use Arch and you have to set it up completely from the ground by your self so I know everything there is to know.
Basically every question was like this with the recruiter. I got further in the process but quit because the workplace looked like it would drain my soul when I got interviewed by the employees of the company.
Jesus Christ though, some recruiters could be replaced by an automated phone system.17 -

Experience levels range greatly! You have to be mindful of that to.

Most painful dev learning experience?
Learned that no matter hard you work, no matter how big the dragon you slain/slew, there are individuals out there waiting to tear you down. Not immediately, certainly not in front of you, and capable of going to extremes just to make themselves feel/look better.7 -
I love the skill requirements section of a junior Dev job advertisement.
To summarise "Basically you'll need all the skills and experience of a senior, but we are gonna pay you much much less". 😔1 -
The experience that made me feel like a dev badass was when a teammate accidentally deleted the database for production and I had the latest backup. Everybody was panicking not until I told them I had the solution4

When I started learning to code I couldn't wait to become a 'senior dev' thinking I would spend all my time writing awesome code.
Now that I am a 'senior dev' and have the experience I now spend 90% of my time documenting & planning and even less time coding :'(9 -

Worst part of being a dev?
THERE'S A NEW FREAKIN FRAMEWORK EVERYDAY.
Where are we supposed to get time to learn everything the job applications require? And even worst, have 2 years of experience with the thing?
And how about when developing a responsive dynamic website? If you are crazy, like me, and you are the kind of dev that always wants to deliver something great, customized to the needs of your client, and that doesn't smell bootstrappy, you probably can't stand too when people ask you about time guesstimates. Especially when you are the ONLY DEV in your company.
Also, our gear is EXPENSIVE.
Sorry, I guess I'm stressed... Had to bring some work home, due to the bosses deciding to deliver a project one week early to the client, without consulting me first.
Still, luckily for me, all this bullshit can't take my love of coding away.3 -

nothing like being interviewed by non-devs for a dev role. the words experience and samples go right out the window and all they care about is do you have a degree because a piece of paper proves you can code and not your actual code. smh3

So, I'm a CS student in a third world country. I love coding and I think i'm pretty good at it.
As I'm kind of poor, I'm pretty much constantly looking for any job I can take, and I've already done a dev gig at a software sweatshop here doing mostly PHP, JS and Android/Java... the dev experience was cool, but money was absolute crap ($1.5USD/hour at the current rate, working 9h/day Mon-Sat, did it while in vacation). Better than min wage in my country but still, looking at the numbers I see from programmers all over the world... it was practically working for free. The real problem is almost every dev job here is similar, so I was looking into going remote but every opportunity I see is for seniors/people with 2-3 years experience or more.
Can you give me some tips on getting a remote job as a student/recent grad with little experience? What would you do in my position? Any input is greatly appreciated!17 -
So I've been using this website that loads terribly and after sending the dev some emails on how he should reduce the amount of page requests to reduce the load time, I got this response. Anyone with moodle experience care to explain why one should have 200+ css requests before a page loads?13

Has anyone been in a situation where a sr dev, with 12 yrs of experience and paid more than you, can't fix something after trying for a week and now the boss comes to you and expects you (a lowly paid dev with only 5) to fix it in a day, now that it's super urgent?
That describes my day... FML... I have to do overtime tonight...

I had a meeting today with some high level technical executives from IBM and I showed them our architecture and they were impressed and said it was rare that they saw start-ups with such great architecture. As a dev with no formal education and one year experience this makes me so proud and also very proud of my team2

Not entirely dev related but the year that the mass surveillance companies go away (Google, Facebook (and WhatsApp, Instagram etc), Microsoft and a few others), I'll call that the best fucking year ever.

Being me. Fresh out of UNI with a three year bachelor in CS, no work experience. Starts in a big tech company with a lot promise of exciting project etc. Starts in 3 projects with one lead dev and two senior devs.
First month begins. I start by setting up my local environment and read documentations, which is fairly irrelevant and old. One of the senior devs quits.
Second month begins. Lead dev quits as well and the other senior dev having sick leave for the rest of the month. Basically I'm on my own, but thankfully not responsible for the projects.
Third month begins. The other senior dev is still sick. Nobody to help. Now I'm forced to talk to customer with a lacking knowledge of projects. Nobody knows what is going on. Hopefully my other senior dev will come back.
Fourth month begins. My senior have quit as well. I've been assigned as responsible of all three projects now. FML.
Fifth month begins. I begged my manager for help. Got a junior dev to help me with one of the projects. He and I still have no clue what we should do.
What a shitty start to a career as a developer.

Had an interview for post of android dev at a start-up(please note: they specified they need a full-time android dev for their team, junior role, even freshers would do). Not a single question asked from android- architecture, apps, libraries, not even anything from my resume. They thought that any person who can 'reverse a linked list on paper' can work with them, but not a dev who has a year's experience in android development.
At the end, after asking me about a dozen (quite simple) DS questions, they said they can't provide the opportunity to a fresher, and I can join as an intern for 3-6 months and 'work my way up'.
WHY THE FUCK YOU SAID YOU NEED A FULL-TIME ANDROID DEV WITHOUT MUCH EXPERIENCE? AND WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK ME RELEVANT QUESTIONS?3 -

*Math, but very little algebra/geometry (though, could easily improve these).

So, we’ve a small UK based dev team, we follow good practices and get good results. But ‘they’ want to deploy quicker (it was suggested we skip the test phases...) but don’t want to invest in more staff.
So their suggestion is to outsource development to Bangladesh and have us in-house devs work on discovery and innovation.
I’m uncomfortable with this as it feels they are thinking they can get quicker and cheaper dev done abroad (which I hate as it feels disrespectful to my fellow dev brothers n’ sisters).
Also disjointed as in my experience planning and dev’ing work best when you can talk face-to-face.

There are other standard and expected front end requirements but want someone with 4+ years experience
Salary £19,000 - less than two thirds of the national average salary for non UK folks.

Worst recruiter experience:
Recruiter sets up interview with a company. I get to their office - the most packed place I have ever seen - devs practically sitting on each other, and the QA guys are being used as chairs....
So I wait for 15 minutes near the doot till the interviewer gets to me through the incredibley noisy openspace, and shakes hands. We go into a mess of a meeting room - and he explains that they will be moving to a bigger office soon. I say - looks like you should have moved by now....
Anyways - he askes me to tell him about myself - and I explain my background, Focusing on Android dev experience - The recruiter told me this was a senior Android dev position. The interviewer has a huge question mark above his head, but waits for me to finish. Then he tells me: so... no backend experience? so Now I have a huge question mark above my head...
turns out he is looking for BackEnd devs - Not android devs.1 -

Ok, so I already asked when junior is no longer a junior..got mixed answers. Now I'd like to know what defines seniority level in your country?! Years of experience, having wide range of knowledge, great leadership skills, having boobs (joke).. ?!? I don't have any finished formal education, just a bunch of experience from pet projects and free lance here and there. I applied for a position this morning, got an email before the afternoon with an invitation for an interview!

My fellow dev (a younger guy) and I have been having a lot of disagreements with the lead dev (obviously a more experienced, older guy).
We can have arguments with him all day long, to explain and convince him that he's not that right, or not right at all.
Or we can keep silent and wait for shit to happen.
I'm already applying the stfu strategy myself... Because the other way round is exhausting.
At the same time, naturally, I'm looking for opportunities somewhere else. And, naturally, in those job ads, they state "X years of experience".
This further sets me off.
I'm sick of having an argument shut down because someone has X more years of experience, at a higher position, thinks he is better.
I am starting to hate people who boasts his years of experience instead of having the real knowledge and skills to create value.9 -

So here's a story..
Whenever we have a job announcement, whether tech or dev, there's this one guy who applies every single time and never gets selected. I have interviewed him once and learnt that he doesn't in fact have the skills or experience we're looking for. Also someone else with better experience applies everytime. He's been doing this for more than 3 years now.
Now WE feel embarrassed everytime he comes in for interview.
You can't blame him for wanting to work so much with one of the best teams in our tiny country. I gotta say I really admire his perseverance and I think and hope that he's gonna find what he's looking for with that kinda perseverance.2 -
I thought any fledgling dev could become a good one with enough team guidance, frequent discussion on ideas and reasoning with seniors, experience, and work variety
But one I know is proving they don't have the knack.
I really wanted to believe anyone could be a good dev if they tried hard enough but this one is just...

Not paid enough to make it my problem to raise it with management. I've tried to help them grow but I've never seen such slow growth despite the different learning/teaching styles *we've* done to improve their capabilities (the entire team)

So this one day I'm at work and the manager peaks into my office and just says "can you check that platform X is building, pretty much done just a basic bug check" (this bloke had negative 1 technical experience)
I'm not sure what he means, the whole thing is built in Java and I know nothing about that...
I log in the platform on dev server, sure enough it seems to work, charts are drawn, no errors, then I try to log out; this button does nothing...
I don't bother telling the manager, I just go to the dev who's a friend of mine and tell him about it.
A week later, manager jumps in the room all excited "we're launching this product tomorrow, mind checking again?"
Sure, I log in, ... There's no log out button, it's gone... I ask the dev.
"Yeah I fixed it, it's gone now!"2 -

almost a year ago, i have no idea of what i was doing at work cause everything was new: coding languages, databases, clients, co-workers, etc. i had 0 experience and i am back here again on devRant after 3836382 years and i am proud to say i've learnt so much and have been promoted to Project Manager. im happy asf and i am now ready for another round of dev rants!14

Yesterday some students came for work experience and I was nominated to be the tour / questions and answers guy. So I showed him my desk and spoke to my co-worker about what he does. He was a dev as well.
Midway through he asked how we deal with problems in development. I said "Go on Stack Overflow" He laughed it off but I wasn't kidding.
TLDR: Stack overflow is not a joke.4 -
Is it just me, or is the term full stack developer a bit carelessly thrown about in job listings and such?
In the past, as far as I can tell, you could refer to yourself as a full stack dev if you had experience with both front end and back end technologies.
If you for example knew HTML/CSS, JS, PHP and MySQL, you'd be a full stack dev.
Now however, I feel you need to know so much more to justify calling yourself an actual full stack dev, and yet most job listings ask for a full stack dev.
What do you guys think?
Should the term full stack developer still be used, and what do you need to know to justify calling yourself a full stack dev without feeling like a liar?8 -
iOS11 is so buggy that it is actually ridiculous. How does a company that is worth so many billions of dollars manage to release such patchy software. Hang your head in shame Apple. If anyone hasn’t updated from iOS10 yet, hold on till iOS11.0.1

Being able to support my family with my work.

Best experience: my new company sent me to USA for a few days to meet the client. I've gained a lot more of confidence on my spoken English. I've didn't use it in years, so I was worried. Perhaps you wouldn't think it's a "dev" experience, but English is actually a required skill for a developer who has it as a second language.1 -

- Another 2 recruiters on LinkedIn showed interest: Made me happy.
- Psychometric & technical tests popped today: Feel like failed them completely.
- 2 more career days coming up: Not all hope is lost.
- Lack of portofolio and job experience: Brain is stuck and emotionally being meh. Maybe I wasn't meant to be a dev. :-/

Recently applied for a Junior DevOps position. Didn't even get further than the recruiter because they wanted at least 3 years' experience. I'd hardly call that Junior! I was even willing to take the slight pay cut from my current position as a mid level dev3

4 months into the journey at an ambitious streaming startup we, a team of 10 engineers (primarily full stack), sets up a tiny and performant express.js api setup.
We document plans for improving the maintainability, including outlining specific practices (not very different from general node best practices) that need to be followed for all new development.
Enter a new engineering manager (dedicated backend manager), henceforth referred to as S, with a rat face and brain that belongs in a rat hole.
Week 1:
S: let's push this new feature out asap
Dev: it'll need a couple of weeks to get done right
S: let's push out a functional version tomorrow, and revamp in the next iteration
Dev: ... (long pause) there's documented practices specifically directing against this
S: can you not do it by tomorrow
Dev: not if it needs to be done right
S: all you need to do is.. (simplifies changes spanning 5 modules into a 3 line summary)
Dev: yes, (outlines how each changes chains into the others, and how to keep the development maintainable for atleast a few months)
S: (interrupts every sentence saying "yes dev, I understand, yes yes")
Dev: could you please tell me how you expect me to connect (outlines two modules that would fail unless developed as standalone services)
S: Yes dev, I understand, yes yes. I don't have much experience with Node.js, so I can't tell you that.

I'm fucking frustrated.
Almost Every project, almost every task I did in the past 6 months has been a failure or partly done. Even the most trivial of tasks take me hours to complete, after immense googling and copypasting.
I know that I'm a junior with less than a year of dev experience but it feels I'm traversing through hell itself. I truly love to program, have tremendous passion and want to be a professional dev but it seems destiny itself wants me to keep doing what I do best but hate(Sysadmining).
When will this nightmare end? When will I be able to accomplish anything I need with code with so much ease, like my dev friends do? How many more courses, bootcamps should I fucking attend and how many more tutorials to watch? When will be able to work at nights without falling asleep? When will I have a fucking dev job and freelance projects instead of being a goddamn server-managing monkey?14 -
Most of 2020 was a bad dev experience for me. I was paid to remake a system because it was
a ) insecure
b ) inconsistent
c ) hard to mantain (spaghetti code)
I thought I could focus on the backend and just reuse the front end but even that was unusable.
Basically had to redo it from scratch and since I made the fatal mistake of letting THEM estimate how long it would take, I worked most of the year instead of just 2-3 months.
Never again. After being done with the project I still had to be 'reachable' for the coming weeks if anything happened.
I turned off my phone during one weekend and then the next thing I know the only other dev at that small company is asking me for details on the project (meaning they just decided to offload everything to him). Never heard from them again and I'm hoping that won't change.
Beware small dev companies with less than 5 actual devs.
Best: Dev wise this year has been bad or not-bad but nothing 'great' comes to mind.
My fun times and enjoyments were not derived from dev activities.1 -

Well, first I'd like to mention that after some more experience in the field since, I realize that this company had some pretty terrible management infrastructure...
Nonetheless, I think my best team experience had to have been during my first programming job because my project manager... WAS A FREAKING DEVELOPER! It wasn't his job to be a developer obviously, but we were a small team essentially developing waterfall style, and he had to pick up the slack now and then for certain issues. The man was a genius and everyone appreciated him because you could talk to him about anything dev related and he would get it. The rest of my team was also very chill too, so it was all in all just a fun experience, stressful as it may have been at times.
I have not since had such a diversified project manager 😟 but then again, not the PM's job to touch code...2 -

His first PR was for a rather large form with 30+ fields.
He. used. a. <table/>......To layout the entire thing! With inline floats no less!

I take about an hour, ask questions, make suggestions, general feedback, etc.
Today I noticed none of my questions were answered, developer closed the review, and the code merged into the production branch.
So I email him, asking him why the review was closed and why none of my concerns were addressed before merging to production.
Dev: "No one responded or left feedback, so I thought it was OK to merge up."
Me: "I reviewed and left feedback within the hour you sent the request."
Dev: "Oh yea...you did. Sorry. The code is already in production, but if you still want to leave feedback, create a work item, and I'll take a look."
No you won't.
An example of the code...The dev added an async method to a test harness *console app*. Why? .. check in comment was "Improves performance and enhances the developer experience.."
NO IT DOESN'T!

Worst Hackathon experience:
Taking an API built by a junior dev team with minimal specs and "hacking for two pointless days" to make it work in production...
The whole Hackathon idea was an experiment to see if they could make the dev team stay late if they bought pizza and said "have fun".
We all spent 2 days cursing at the shoddy tools and lamenting that you can't run a Hackathon with a single directive and "production ready goal" yet remove any choice the developers have to actually contribute.1 -
Just read a job posting for a junior .Net software dev. 2 years experience in C#, Visual Studio, .Net. Usual suspects right, though two years experience for a junior seems off. But they also want embedded systems experience. wat?4

Submitted my first proposal for a freelance gig and didn't win the bid but I don't feel bad about it. Asked for feedback and it turns out I lost because the dev who they chose had a recommendation from someone the CTO (decision maker) highly respected. He loved my proposal and appreciated my efforts on it and my bid was marginally lower than the dev they chose.
Overall it was a positive experience and I may have established a good report with the CTO in the process. -
Got contacted for a job "interview" by a company because they were looking for "people with my skill set". All my profiles say I am a fullstack web dev with experience in frontend js frameworks and js and php backend frameworks.
Come in to find the "interview" is an exam. Ok, fine. My brain could do with some exercise.
After the basic IQ type questions, I get the web dev exam.
It is 95% of the questions are about CSS and HTML basics.

Why would some companies advertise a job post as Software Engineer, and only to find out deep in the process after doing multiple interviews, that it’s actually a support job??
Seriously why the fuck do that? That’s disingenuous and misleading as fuck?
And why would a dev be dropping a dev job and experience to do tech support ? Is it even worth it?
Even if it is, can you easily switch back to an actual dev job afterwards?

My best dev experience this year was the success of my company intern app at work, where I am employeed since last December beside my studies.
The company founder, the CEO, the head of department and the marketing department all like my app and in January it will be deployed to all company phones 😀

Worse dev experience: Working for a company that had a monopoly in the market. They have Dinosaurs that didn't want to upgrade the user experience at all because of the company's hold on the market and their lack of forward thinking. It's a privately held company that is hard to get terminated. It was frustrating because they could do more but didn't so I'm looking to compete once my non-compete is up.

Not really a rant (?)
I started my first programming job in January this year. I went there staight after Highschool, so i had no real experience, knew only the basics of software development and my written code was quite a mess. So one of my first real tasks (after 2 months) was to write a business logic for batch handling (for a warehouse management system). I invested quite some time to develop a suitable architecture, talked with some other developers and wanted to cover the whole thing with unit tests (which really nobody at the company uses). So I spent about 3 weeks to write the whole thing, test it and improve it many times. It worked perfectly and I got pretty good feedback from the code-review.
1 month ago - the code worked perfectly and was multiple times testet (also by the client) - the client came with some totally new requirements for the batch handling. I tried to impelemt them, but soon found out, that the architecture doesn't supported them, it was not build for the required handling and would soon become a totally mess, if i tried to make it work.
So I was pretty mad, because I had to change the whole fucking thing, but I also wanted to make it better. I hab gained some experience and decided (with some help of a senior dev) to make a completely new try with a different architecture, that can be easily expanded, if needed. I build my concept, wrote and tested the whole new code in 3 days. Fucking 3 days compared to the initial 3 weeks, and it worked, better and even faster.
I was quite pissed to delete the old code, and especially that i had wasted 3 weeks for it and had to struggle with many different things. But I lerarned so much from it and also in the months between, that I was also really glad that I had the opportiunity to write it again.
This whole thing made me now realize that this is, what I really like to do and what I'm good in. I really enjoy learning new things and for me, programming is the best and easiest way to do it. Despite alle the cons and annoying side effects of it, I really found my dream job here.1 -
So my brother and I work in the same company, same dev team (pretty nice).
He's an intern and I'm a senior. But the task are very similar only that interns need monitoring and guidance.
He constantly worries because he thinks he knows nothing and is slow on getting things done.
I always tell him that it is perfectly normal to feel like that, he just need to learn and acquire experience and we all go through that at the beginning.
Can you share your experience and tell him something to encourage him so I can show him this post and he sees he's not alone?

i'm curious... to anyone on here who does hiring, why do companies always expect someone to already have experience with high volume systems. i've been a php dev for 10+ years but am having the hardest time finding a job and i have been turned down so many times because they expect me to have worked on a system with millions of users and terabytes worth of data already. it's beyond frustrating

So recently I got a new job in a respected creative agency with a good salary. FYI, I am a junior web dev with merely 2 years of experience. Office and everything is great about the job except the job itself. The senior dev have left the agency before I came and now they expect me to build a fucking transnational crm web application all by myself. And the deadline is in 6 weeks which only 4 left now. I don't want to believe that how they fucking give a junior dev such a big web project to build. In the beginning I wanted to resign but then I decided to build it. I have some difficulties but I think I'll manage to finish it. Just wanted to share how fucked up my current situation is. Fuck the managers btw.4

I’m one of maybe the 10% of dev boot camp graduates that had a successful outcome. Most people think it’s as easy as just showing up, write mediocre code, get a certificate then you’re automatically an “engineer” with job offers being thrown at you. It’s not. I already had experience writing code throughout high school and took 2 years of cs classes at university before dropping out. TLDR; only worth it if you already have some technical knowledge or experience otherwise your just pissing away your money.5

What's some advice from you've learnt from experience that you would give to someone in my position?
For context, I taught myself Java a while ago, was taught Python and some PHP recently and have patchy self taught knowledge of JavaScript.
So no degree and minimal formal training!
I have done 3 or so months of Ruby (self taught) doing back end web dev with Rails and soon am going to get involved with a small PHP and front end built from scratch.6 -

When I was green it was mostly learning. Now it's mostly codebase cleanup, dev experience improvement or dabbling with some feature that's not prio.

I adapt code only to "taste" good for code reviewers, but they allow themselves to commit without caring and just saying :"oh unit testing is boring"

I hate hate hate writing résumés for dev positions. Each posting requires that you guess wildly about their stack therefore write a totally new résumé. You don't get a job because you omitted the keyword "Newtonsoft" when mentioning your Dotnet Core experience. Hiring departments have one job and they universally suck at it for tech.7

full stack is not only db and code, but also "every step the bit goes through " from end user's screen/input to server and back to him
whether is an app or service, end user is only an example.
it's about knowing how the language behaves, how the server interprets and replies to requests, protocols, even how to do every single configuration on the systems you are using, and in my point of view that includes hardware.
pretty much that...
I get sic when I see on a resume claiming "I'm a full stack dev" and there's nothing on it saying that the guy knows at least to change a light bulb... lol
Even worse, when I see job offers asking for "Full stack Dev, with no experience" ...

One of my bad dev habits is that I tend to take up too much work because a lot of devs I had to work with seemed not competent enough. It's a bad habit because I get way overworked which influences code quality and deadlines.
I have to learn to trust more in others and give up some responsibility... it's hard though.
I think a big influence on my mindset has been that I never worked in a team bigger than 4 developers and I had way more experience in web dev than the others.
I sometimes may appear as an arrogant prick, but it's not intentional.9 -

Back in my study days software dev was this weird almost magical thing where you tell a electrocuted stone in a fantasy language what to do.
Now after working in the field for 4 years it has lost its shine and I mostly connect software dev to work grind and people who complain even though they just don’t read.
Maybe the time is near to look into a new field of work. Maybe it’s just not my kind of work to earn money. It’s not even like my higher ups are unsatisfied with my work. My current boss complimented my work a lot in our meeting last week.

Just finished fourth interview with a company (fuck me) for a solutions engineer position (I am a self taught dev that is transitioning to technical roles from a pretty "soft" background with the hope of being in a software engineer role within three years). The senior dev lead from the consultant group has 25+ years consulting and claims to have written a web browser for the blind and all sorts of in-depth accessibility things.
Stakeholders tell us "Don't forget about accessibility compliance on this project"
Senior dev lead with all this claimed accessibility experience asks me, "What does accessibility mean?"2 -
Took a major blow to the confidence today. Had a call with FanDuel for a devops position. By the end of the call we both knew I didn't have the experience for it. I expected that. I asked to be considered for a Java position and she was less than enthusiastic based on my CV (resume). I've been a Java dev for 4 years :(

When I came back, I wrote a blog post about Apache Spark in my company's blog. Because of the blog, my name got mentioned in a prominent newspaper's article about Apache Spark.

Sure it's something anyone can just jump in on with minimal experience, and probably make a little thing that kinda looks cool to the layman, but it takes experience and hard lessons to make something that will impress the judges.4 -

So, I went to my folks' for the holidays. My old man is a hospital practitian and is still resentful because I did not want to be a doctor too.
So he made me fix the whole fucking wiring at his place over this last couple days, because "well, you choose to be a glorified electrician!"

But the worst experience above all is one I had with a German school: the director/previous dev got angry cause they were told a real dev was needed (they were told this by most of their colleagues) and tried to actively make my job miserable. After a while of functioning as a dev, I've learned one of many lessons:
The amount of experience you have does not correlate with your expertise, but it in fact correlates with the amount of absolutely broken shit you've seen and your ability deal with it. -
Do you ever get this soul-crushing feeling inside you that says you haven't achieved enough or you don't make enough money?
For context, I've been a dev for 6 years now and make a lot more money than when I started, which was $1000 USD annually. (Third world country).
I used to think that making more money as I grew with experience would drive this feeling away but it hasn't.19 -
So I needed a software tool from ti.com. Most of the components I could just download. But one of them was export controlled. I had to create an account to login and answer some questions:
1. Are you a terrorist?
2. Will you use this for bombs and shit?
3. Do you live in any of these sketchy locations: Iran, China, Philadelphia?
4. Do you know any Javascript devs and/or are you a Javascript dev?
The usual stuff. So anyway, the fun part was creating an account. It was the most terrible UI experience I have ever had creating an account. If you want to experience pain and self loathing after having dirtied yourself by this experience then please tell up about it. Just go to ti.com and make an account.5 -

My best experience is working for a small company and bridging their disconnected systems together using an array of programming languages such as Go, PHP, VB, Batch Script, Javascript and C -
I'm torn on dev bootcamps.
On one hand, I learn the most in hands-on direct tinkering and bootcamps tend to exude this with well-trained instructors following best practices.
On the other hand, the short timeline means corners are cut and an overwhelming amount of material is dropped all at once leading to a leaky retention vessel at the end.
I prefer ramping up learning over a period of time to gain experience than a fire hose approach.1 -

My best and worst dev experience this year was getting a new job.
The bad parts: I’m inheriting a code base that was maintained by an outside agency, so there’s very little documentation. There’s a lot of systems maintenance and upgrades that have to be done because it was never done. I’m working at a larger organization, so tracking down who I need for info can be tricky. I’m the only person maintaining my code base.
Now the good parts: Better pay and benefits. My co workers, dev and non-dev, are always helpful. Since the dev team is small, we are very discerning when we pick up work for the websites. I have more independence to self-learn. I’m not at a blame culture. My role is permanently remote.
So far I think the good outweighs the bad.2 -

Recently had to start developing on a PLC for a new project and didn’t realize how much these companies fuck their developers.
For example, I’m using CODESYS to write structured text to run on the PLC. CODESYS is free to download. However, in the free tier, they take all your .st files and ur config files and combine them into a SINGLE FUCKING BINARY which completely defeats the purpose of version control.
However, if you BUY their pro license, you can install a git module.
There’s other things that make developing in them suck. For example, the only IDE you can use is the one built into CODESYS and it fucking sucks. Another one is that their builtin IDE has a “dark mode” that only works on certain files. If you open a function file, it uses dark mode. But if you open a struct file, it uses light mode.
Also, having no other runtime than the one built into CODESYS fucking sucks.
Maybe I’ve been spoiled with VSCode and python 🤷♂️5 -
To be fair, I don't have my degree yet (just two more semesters...) but I'm working as a dev second year now and studying is really nothing compared to real-world experience. Yeah, I know I haven't said nothing new.1

It's our own double standard because of which companies have to enforce a "Don't discuss your salary" clause in the employee handbook.
For example let's say you are a 4 years experienced dev making $50K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 2 years experience drawing $65K from the company. You will be outraged knowing that, wouldn't you?
The double standard kicks in when the coin is flipped. Now let's say you are 2 years experienced dev making $60K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 6 years experience drawing a $45K annual salary.
You're not gonna fight with your employer for them to get more salary, are you? If anything, you will be happy to hear that.
When everyone knows how much everyone else is making, it fills them with resentment towards each other. This is why companies make a rule for their employees to never reveal their salaries, because of our own double standard.17 -
I am a chinese dev with 5-6 years experience, working on c/cpp/golang for backend server and PHP for web.

My biggest dev regret is being complacent in my programming ability from way too early on. I learned a bunch of stuff from intro programming classes (which I always brushed off as "unnecessary" and "boring") because I was too ignorant to accept that writing the same Python code over and over wasn't progress. What are peoples thoughts on taking a sort of backwards step in their career in order to get more experience?
I took my current job as I thought it would be a stepping stone to go on and do more development work (it was my first dev role), but I’ve been here 4.5 years and I rarely do anything other than maybe fix a bug every now and then.
They mainly have me doing non-dev support type stuff, and they don’t use any best practices or anything like that, and I feel that I am falling behind where I should be experience wise.
I am doing a degree (distance learning with the Open University) so I am working on personal development but that’s not much help when I go to interviews.
Should I think about trying to go for junior jobs, rather than just developer jobs, and the pay cuts that may go with that, or should I just grind out leet code etc and keep booking interviews?6 -

My coworker got fired due to budget & not enough work to do (his work is done, they didn't had long term tasks for him). But he is a junior dev (1y prof. experience in IT, 15y prof. experience in total) and he is now interviewing for nearly a month. I'm helping my teammates with the problems that they face in debugging an issue or fixing a Dev environment.
Sometimes ppl go too flexible and ask for my Dev VM. The help I have to offer is tell them cause of an issue and tell them the fix that they have to give. What the fu*k they do? What did they gain as experience all these years.
Ppl don't know how to make draft commits. They can't fix but failures. They don't know anything.
They just sit at office and age as it is their only job.
Seniors take so much salary. Why don't they feel bad that they are not doing justice to their work. -
What's your opinion on functional shortcuts and 'hacks' in many languages, like map/reduce/filter, ternary operator, lambdas,inner/anonymous classes?
Imo they can make development faster and more efficent but they make the code very unreadable, especially if someone else has to read it, Therefore I try to use them only when it's appropriate. My dev friends use them too much and it makes reading their code a hellish experience, especially in Javascript with Rx.3 -
Being by far the most junior dev on a small team is tough. On top of no real pro experience having to learn an unfamiliar framework and the overall architecture/design.2

The worst dev experience was having to interview people for job openings. I already dislike having to be the interviewee. I don’t like being the interviewer because I haven’t had a great experience with it. I’ve had a lot of people tell me what they think I want to hear instead of just answering my questions.
Surprisingly, the best was working with a recruiter for our open roles. The candidates from the recruiter were really great. Personally, I don’t have great experience with recruiters when I’m the one looking for a job. But for this case of my employer using one, it worked out. IDK if those candidates would have applied without the recruiter.1 -
Write every dev project (even the smallest ones) you have ever done on your CV. I once used an obscure Python module in a really small project, but they desperately needed someone w/ experience with it. It was the reason I got that job.2

Today, my co-workers went nuts about the fact their version of our product doesn't work on the pre-production since everything is fine on their local dev machines ^^
After a quick sighting, I figured out what was going on.
There was a package called from non-dev code which was required as a package for development.
The build plan of the application consists of a task which purges dev-packages within the vendor folder, using composer install --no-dev ^^
So the build plan runs perfectly fine, without a single error, but runtime was yelling about a missing class.
It's a delight to be one of the only guys with dev-ops experience in the whole damn building.

I have a 3 freaking professional experience as a .NET developer and was freaking able to deliver successful projects. My experience is .NET freaking windows form. And for every freaking time that someone would call and interview me they do freaking ask if I have a freaking ASP.NET MVC experience and I don't freaking have! BUT I DO KNOW HOW TO BUILD USING THE FREAKING FRAMEWORK.
The freaking problem is my 3 years of experience is from winform, but i do freaking know how to use the framework.

I am an average Dev who is striving to improve. I currently work in a setting where I have the most experience in a corporate setting. I came from a very disciplined team where I had a great mentor. Now I am in a looser team with very bright people who don't have that experience. They are mainly JavaScript devs without much production experience. We are working in .net but they don't like working with back end code or databases. This is a 3 month contract. I want to do a good job. I have made enemies in the past and I just want to leave on a good note.

So I was instructed today, after lunch, to spend an hour teaching a member of my team how to SSH, store keys, basic io routines, and create CRON jobs to auth our ECR registry by my team lead.. Why am I wasting dev time teaching someone how to use an operating system? Need I add, our primary Dev workspace is a spun up using vagrant using xubuntu. I just can't comprehend how this person has been using xubuntu as their primary OS for two months and doesn't know the SSH protocol. Much less how they landed a dev job without any prior experience with a *NIX based OS.2

My first job as a dev started 3 months ago and I noticed something strange/funny.
Here's the story our company is a software development one (we are aprox 300 employees), and most of our projects (70% more or less) are for a huge Insurance company in our country, a somewhat normal situation is that the company sends a dev to work full time at the insurance company for 6 months or a year (that usually is a lie and they spend 3 years or more there).
The funny part is this every Dev that is send there is mocked by everyone or receives condolences from the other devs.
I asked why and they just answered me that working as a dev in a really big company whose line of business isn't necessarily software or something related with technology is not a fun experience1 -

While logging a boatload of bugs on the code my junior dev checked in, I added a couple of items to our product backlog.
Instead of fixing his bugs, junior dev started pulling things from the backlog. I found this out when he messaged me about the requested search results sorting.
His message was:
"hey, the sorting is going to be harder than I thought. Angular 2 dropped native support of filters. But I did find an MIT licensed npm package that should let me add sorting functionality to our JSON data objects. "
Um... You know you can sort using plain JavaScript, right?
BTW, junior dev has more than 3 years of professional experience in addition to a degree.6 -

This is the first time I have a bad PM and it's much worse than having a pain in the ass colleague dev. A bad dev will mess his/work project and maybe slow down 1-2 other devs.
But a bad PM will doom the whole project, wasting lots of time of the devs working under him/her. Costing much more company's money.

Me: **explaining the challenges, limitation, env set up, testing etc. Also because I am a junior so may take more time than experienced dev**
PM: **insist that this is important blah blah**
Me: Understand your points but X days is just too little, I don't want you to blame me for missing the deadline. Either we get a reasonable deadline or you can get more experienced dev to do it faster.
**Knowing well that I have the most experience in this task and other devs are busy with their own tasks**
In the end I have to escalate this argument to more senior manager because both of us won't budge. Not only she agreed to extend the deadline she also assigned a senior dev to help me when I am stuck.
His other mistakes I noticed during my time working under him:
- not consulting senior dev for the approach to the task (thus we have to change the design twice).
- assigning tasks to people without sufficient background (a java dev is being assigned a python task, it's doable but it's going to be faster if we assign to someone with more python experience right?)
I understand that our company is short-staffed, but I begin to wonder if the stress the devs endure is because of that or because of his incompetence.
Next time, I am going to specifically ask not to work under him again.2 -
Why employers strongly believe Front-End and Back-End are synonyms of Full-Stack?
They are requiring Front devs to have knowledge and experience with relational databases and Back devs to be experts in HTML and CSS, sometimes graphic design stuff too.
For God's sake just hire a Full-stack Dev3 -
i have experience in mobile dev for 3 years,today i got interview for coding test,it have 10 question,i cant answer question 1 so it stuck there until time out.the question is so fcking simple but because i more focus on framework and only have basic in kotlin/dart so i really like dumb people when interview,the 3 years experience is gone just like noting,even i forget toString use () ( so toString() ) because usually vscode give suggest the method

I’ve been interviewing at a few companies lately. I’m a dev with ~6 years of experience with a specific language. Most of the experience comes from working in companies that developed their own software, not talking about cms stuff. Analytical, data tracking systems. Now working at a fintech. I’ve got an offer to work as a senior developer in a smaller tech team, with more salary. I’ve approached the current company about the offer and they told me that they don’t think I’m a senior dev and rather a strong mid level dev. The Hr also told me to think about if I’m really a senior and if the other companies expectations would be met. They would increase my salary, but not quite match it. It’s not too far off though. Their reasoning for this was that you need a lot of experience with their product (which does not correlate with seniorness of a developer, only the worth of specific employees for a company IMHO) and system architecture design. The problem is that we don’t see any tasks that could implement any system design for as log as I’ve worked here, so I don’t see how I could work into a senior role at this company. Of course imposter syndrome kicked in and I’m triple guessing myself if I should join the other company as a senior now. How should I aproach this? The current company is stressful to work at because of big workload, a lot of my coworkers think the same thing about the workload.11

Why do some employers make such a distinction between learning the tools at university and learning the same tools at the workplace?
Are they backward or old? Don't they know modern, high-quality universities have modern environments that are in fact real life?
Environments with acc-test-prod-dev with gitlab, ci/cd in Scrum teams and the works? Heck, at my uni we even worked at real companies, did internships there for months!
Come on.. to me this 'the tools you learned in school isn't the same experience as real life experience'. Right, these guys must be on some conservative backward model because there is in fact no difference.
I have worked both during my uni internship at a real company (in teams too) as well as irl at real companies and there is no difference, it's the same thing.
I don't care if I've learned to experience git + ReactJS etc during an internship through uni or at a workplace. It's all bureaucracy.10 -
Recently I've finally finished my first game in Unity3D <3 But I'm self-taught and it's probably not really well-made. I'd love to show code to someone with real experience but I don't have any friends in game dev -.-

I want to share one of my recent interview experience..
so first round was telephonic and technical guy seems cool as he did not emphasis on syntax, function name etc.. but just took the info of my tech on which I am working on and discuss some approaches to find a solution towards the problem.. ( I guess thats pretty well for experienced dev)
Second round was assignment and its a hell of assignment :( atleast for me.. Like I work in CI 3 and I did assignment on CI 4. almost everything is changes in CI 4 ( I mean its structure writing the way of routes,models and controllers).. But I took the challenge personally and finished 95% of assignment ..

So I'm about to apply to a dev job and I don't know how this is going to go over. It seems everywhere I go they want years and years of professional experience I just dont have, being a junior dev and all, but I think I found a company I can get behind. Are there any tips you guys and gals have for me for resume highlights? Possibly questions for my employer, as its one thing that always confused me, they always ask if you have questions and I feel like I'm missing something until I ask but they never seem impressed by my questions.3

I might be moving to England soon and I'm a drop-out. I have been coding for 5+ years and have quite an amount of experience in my hands. What courses should I consider that can boost my ability to find a job in England? Devops? Backend? Frontend? App Dev? Game Dev? I am interested and have a minor experience in DevOps, main bulk of my experience is in backend, a bit of frontend(not my field but its still coding) the other two i've had no experience in other then debugging and fixing code in several projects i've worked on.

I go and try to get internships at a larger company, and just get rejected
people say my resume is fake (nothing to say except IT IS NOT)
they cite labor laws (this I get)
the most frustrating thing though is that I see all these devs with much less experience than me, the only difference being that they are older and in college, getting internships at FANG COMPANIES. most of these people have never had an internship or worked as a developer in any way
one of the most frustrating cases came on a contracting project, where there was this other college dev, who was the worst I have ever worked with
he needed help with EVERYTHING
his python env,

1.5 months into the project, he had not pushed a single USEFUL line of code that was actually what was needed from him

Agency life where the dev department plays 3rd string to our Creative/Experience team and our Demand Gen team. Mainly because the leadership has no idea how to sell dev work?
Oh, and when dev work comes in, its on a super rushed/compressed time table where we've over-promised, and under-charged.

I'm not looking a job move at the moment but always keep an eye on the market. Sometimes you get companies looking for specific experience within a certain stack. How can any dev learn them all or get experience in all and keep up.
Surely their recruitment requirements have to be lenient in some respects as they won't always fine somebody who's willing to move and has the exact experience they need.1 -
Co-worker with 20 years of "computer" experience, and another that's a graphic designer who has never used Illustrator make suggestions to the owner about what's best for the site... claims the problems he is having with Pricing wouldn't happen if he wasn't using WooCommerce, because "it's really only good for small sites, not sites with 3000 items or more..."
I died a little inside from laughing, as the problems are coming from a custom plugin created by his dev!

I recently began using plugins for chrome, that darkify the experience. One of them has a developer option, where you install the plugin locally from Github and it's pretty nice to be contributing to a project for once, instead of just creating my own 😊
Even tho I'm the only one who has contributed and the original dev hasn't written any code for the project for last couple of weeks... 😜2 -
The best feeling I got in past year was when someone sent me a legit job offer (which was not from a bot) as a junior .Net dev on my linkedin. My experience is around 1-2 months of frontend with ASP.Net to this day, some Android apps written in Java + some shitty C# stuff we do in school. I am pretty suprised that someone really vallues 'kids' like me.2

Why is senior dev title given so easily nowadays? If the average career is 30 years, I would think a senior dev would be someone with 15 to 20 plus years of experience.
A person at my work was just given the title and they've been out of school for 7 years. For the record, I've been out of school for 5 years and I'd say I'm in between beginner and mid level. The title has nothing to do with skill, just the knowledge that comes with working in a field for a long time.3 -

So, I’m currently a software tester (please don’t hate me) who is looking to move into development. I’ve been teaching myself programming and have been applying for junior dev jobs.
But it’s been tough, places I’ve been applying for want candidates who have had at least 1 year experience developing in a previous role.
I’ve had an interview for a junior role, but they wanted someone with more experience (and it was my first technical interview so I may have made a few mistakes)
I don’t want to be testing software manually forever (seriously, the manual regression test pack where I work is 1000+ test cases), I find programming more interesting and fun.

Most of the software engineers I have met are working in web development and mobile dev, I understand web and mobile I understand they are hard and require a lot more with APIS CLI and all the other things but I don't understand where is the engineering part in them. I also don't know what am I supposed to do as a software engineer.3
