Client: I said I wanted that text to be white. We talked about this. You have to do what I tell you.
Me: the text is white. The color code is #ffffff.
Client: well make it more white!
*Sigh*18 -
Finally have the home office I've always wanted, with only a few more things left to do in order to consider it finished.
Power company loves me.
Wallet hates me.18 -
When you try to become over smart with Apple.
Client :- Ask for all user information in registration screen.
Me :- But Apple rejects app if you ask for personal information you don't need. We shouldn't ask it since Apple will reject the application
Client :- "I am more strict than Apple", just do it.
Me :- But...
Client :- Do it!
Developed the app, uploaded on Apple Store for review and the app got REJECTED!!
Reason for rejection :- Don't ask for personal information you don't need !!!
Me :- (Evil laughs)
It's been more than 15 days now, the app is still under review due to multiple other violations already informed by me.
Moral :- Listen to developers, they have more experience than you or DO THE F*****G RESEARCH !!
True story !!!!7 -
Someone asked me once to put a timer in an installer to slow it down because apparently it would make the software seem to be more important if it took longer to install.
Ever since being asked this I now wonder does why it takes so long to install some software.. Do developers actually do this?7 -
More like the most obvious thing I accidentally left OUT of an application without thinking about it.
"application seems advanced/cool/working! Oh by the way how do I log out?"
😐😮😧😅😰😭16 -
Bought a tiny tablet so I can more easily do server management on the road/in bed.
I'm playing old school minesweeper on it now 😓7 -
Am I the only one who learns more on my own than at university? It really annoys me when I come here to study but all I do is read devRant posts all day, they are good tho.19

Never worked for this guy, just saw it someone else's feed and thought it would be appropriate here. This is not leadership. This is bullying and stomping on people in a vulnerable situation which most likely has very little to do with their work ethic and more to do with company health. Yea, definitely elevate yourself and be that A+ person for you. Not for assholes like this. A good leader would empathize and provide resources for advancement and transformation to roles that are more aligned to the current environment.24

It was great to see Gitlab not only being transparent, but also being so empathetic towards the employee and not bashing them at all. Instead they said the more things you do the more mistakes you make. And the system/process should have contingency so that human mistakes have some tolerance margins.
That is a great workplace! -
Me: Mom, I'm learning a new programming language
Mom: How is it called
Me: go
Mom: do u like it?
Me: yes, it's pretty
Mom: do u like it more than linux?41 -
> needs to do a long task with many repeated steps

> writing the script takes more time than actually doing the task
but the satisfaction of seeing that script working :)7 -
Best way to avoid procrastinating: the sooner it gets done, the sooner I no longer have to think about doing it. When I have a bunch of shit to do, I start with the things I like the least, and save the more enjoyable things for last.5

Designer: Can you hide scrollbar and still make web scrollable?
I: Sure.
Designer: Ok fine, i'll do that in next design.
I: Wait, how users will know the web has more content?
Designer: I'll put the mouse icon on the bottom.
I: It is not good idea. People can overlook it.
Designer: It will be fine.
I: I strongly recommend to you not to do it.
Designer: Why?
I: Confusion besides other reasons.
Designer: If you can do it, do it.
I: Ok than.
$request->getIP() == 'his_ip' ? 'hide-scrollbar';4 -
The worst feeling is writing so many lines of code knowing you could do it in a more concise way if you just had time to think about it but you don't.1

Question: can you give me some more info? What is it that you dislike about the page? You approved the design, the mockup, the HTML version...and we just finished implementing the backend. Can you be more specific?
Response: make it more like this *gives link to completly new layout from a theme on themeforest*. Why does mine not look like this. Make it like this!
Reaction: *fuck this shit, never freelancing again...* Well, then do it yourself. I'm done!
// best feeling ever :)3 -
Linux: the weather applet in the panel displays the weather. When I open it, it displays more weather details.
Windows: the weather applet in the task bar displays the weather. When I open it, it displays random news and stock prices.
Microsoft can't even do a fucking weather applet right. Everything has to be an incoherent mess.34 -

When will people understand that you can't get quality software made for $5 by some random from Fiverr? Just as I'm about to confirm a quick Freelance job they tell me they've found someone on Fiverr that will do it for a fraction of the amount. It's happening more and more. Don't get me wrong, I'm still getting plenty of work but I see it as a bit of an insult. Comparing the quality of work I do with someone who pumps out 5 programs an hour.
And yes, I do realise there are people on Fiverr that do care about their work, there just doesn't seem to be many of them.9 -
You know you aren't a junior dev any more when you stop asking how to do something and start asking what is the most efficient way to do it.1
-
I'm interrupted frequently during team meetings, usually by junior team members. I brought it up to my boss at a 1:1 and now he interrupts me more often than they do.
I wasn't giving you permission. 😒4 -
I updated the UI as I said last time
prettywordcloud.github.io
Found out word cloud essentially is NP hard problem, so can’t do it in an efficient way.
However, now it is more interactive, and gives the illusion it is faster23 -
HAPPY NEW FUCKING YEAR BECAUSE IT WILL SUCK WAY MORE THAN THE LAST ONE AND CAN WE PLEASE JUST FUCKING STOP CELEBRATING AND GET BACK TO WRITING FUCKING RANTS AGAIN?! BECAUSE I WILL FUCKING DO!4
-
Nothing makes me cringe more that some dumb fuck jabbing their finger at any computer screen to show me what they’re talking about. DON’T. FUCKING. DO. THAT. What makes you think it’s even remotely good for the displace? Do you see it freak out the way it does, that’s not a good thing. Stop fucking doing that!3

My boss: "We need this feature by Friday"
Me: "I can make it work, but I need more time to do it properly"
Boss: "Just fix it by Friday, and you can make a proper implementation later, when there is time"
Like there will ever be time once it works...3 -
Good morning guys,
Have a nice day with your task today.
Let's smile and be positive you will feel better and more productive ^^
"You Can Do It!"7 -
I'm starting my first real/big project! I'm going to program a discord bot for my senior project with Python and I'm gonna have to do it in 25 days. the goal is to get it done in 15 and polish it more from there.4

Never write your email adress on a building. And it you do, don't use web.de (basically German and more shitty version of yahoo). Spoted in a fancy business district in central Berlin.8

Looks like Keybase now also has its own shitcoin. Isn't it about time for that cryptocurrency wank to end already? How many more BitconneeeEEEECT's do we need?
But but but.. this is the next big thing! It will go *stellar*!7 -
I got my first programming job half a year ago, the lead developer there is really fucked up... he is old fashioned and stubborn as hell. He developed a platform that is a mess, his comment: “it works”... but now I have to fix it... I argued with my boss and convinced him to put more time in making it more scalable and feature proof. But the lead developer back then... he didn’t agree it seems like he want to do everything as quickly as possible... now half a year later he stopped working for us and I’m the lead developer now.
And I’m discovering more and more bad decisions... HOWWWW
WHAT DID THIS GUY DO???
At one time I was arguing with him and he backfired a comment: “I’m doing it like this for 10 years”... so I guess that’s the problem... he didn’t put effort in keeping up with the latest developments...
There is literally no structure in his work, every file is different... HOW DO I FIX THIS IN A NICE WAY??? I’m thinking to just start over again...11 -
Fuck you EU,
thanks for making every electronics project I do much more expensive in the future by taxing me for something that I can't buy anywhere inside the eu for a reasonable price. Congrats. You made it unaffordable for me to do the one thing I had fun doing. I hate you.28 -
Win 10 is the best, I love how it just restarts without asking, no more hassle of me having to confirm anything, or save data first. finally an OS that has the confidence to just do whatever the fuck it wants, so awesome!3
-
Does anyone else usually feel a bit homicidal towards someone(replace with boss or client) who doesn’t know a thing about what you do but constantly critiques your work?
Client: I don’t like how it looks, put some more design on it.
What does that even mean ????!?!6 -
My girlfriend's dog died, so I tried to cheer her up by getting her an identical one. It just made her more upset. She screamed at me, "What am I supposed to do with two dead dogs?"1

Is it because my browsing history already suggests I am a retard who sucks at programming?
YouTube now show this whenever I click any video about web dev :(
"You need a website. Why not do it yourself. ... choosing from more than 100 templates... "12 -
Do you know that feeling when you finally have no more errors, but then you can't tell if the software actually does the right thing?

Wisdom of the day:
'No crashes' is not equivalent to 'it works'...5 -
You dumb bitch. I will get to your fucking low level ticket when I’m done doing more important shit. How do you have a job if you don’t know how to use fucking excel?! GOOGLE IT you fuck!

I can't take any more CRUD.
That's it.
It seems all I do every day is CRUD, CRUD and more CRUD.
It's easy, it's fast, but fuck me... Give me at least some data manipulation to do, SOMETHING where I actually need to enable my mind, and not just "write code while watching netflix".17 -

Today I lent a noise canceling headphone for a call at the office. After using it for the first time I see myself using it more often in our open office - even without sound on 😅
What do you guys think about noise canceling? I was blown away by it3 -
I wish all newbies would read clean code. I feel if you understand the concepts you can more easily join an established team and contribute more quickly with less do overs. I realize writing elegant, testable code is like making good whiskey. It takes time.5

When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1

Do these NPC devs even read the README of a project before spewing some dumbass stackoverflow like garbage in an issue thread?
Do your damn job. Being a good software engineer is not like TiKtOk or cHaTgPt where some "magical" answer or entertainment is spoon fed to you, do your absolute best to solve it yourself first, before causing more chaos out in the opensource world.3 -
if there's one thing I love more than coding, it's using metaphors to explain to other people why they're not "getting it". like the all famous contractor:
"yeah I know you need 5 months to build my house, but can you do it in 2. Also, I'm going to pay half. Oh, and when the house is done, could you also add a cellar?"
any more good metaphors out there?4 -
Google Chrome scans private files on the computer without mentioning the user and without the possibility do disable this "feature". Google never announced this anywhere.
Someone (Kelly Shortridge, @swagitda_ on Twitter) found this randomly and confronted Google. It answered that this was only an AV scan and wasn't done more than once a week.
Well, THAT'S why I use Firefox. I don't trust Google, and again and again it gives more and more reasons for this mistrust.4 -
People who savagely strike the keys on their keyboard when they type. Why??!! Do you find it more effective somehow?14

the more time I spend in this industry, the more I come to realize that it's a very blurry line between PROGRAMMING and CONFIGURING.
How much programming do you do these days, really? Isn't it just configuring your frameworks and libraries and engines to do what they do in the way you want?
Does it still make you programmers...?
And then what are these .conf files for your application? A declarative configuration for your... imperative configuration...?20 -
Sooooooo since a few days im feeling more and more depressed.
There are some things that might cause it :
- school
-My last frienhship broke (not like i care about sociality. lol)
-my parents being so strict.
What can i do except for going through this, eyes shut?
I alceady had a depression i dont wanna get back there :/51 -
"I'm not very smart with computers"
Why do people say that? Obviously you may not know 100% of what you can do with a computer, but NO ONE does! I get that some people know slightly more than others, but it all comes down to how much time you put into learning it!
And how do you even respond to that? "I know, I'm dumb." You can't ignore it or affirm it, you just have to awkwardly acknowledge and then change the subject. Ugh...4 -
I can't consider myself as a programmer anymore. All I do at work is debug the shit other people produce. It might have been more than a month since I implemented a feature.3
-
I'm procrastinating until I have more motivation or until the deadline is really close and I have to do it anyways.2

I (barely) wrote very few lines of code today and called it a day. In this state of burnout and actual physical fatigue, this is more than enough. God do I need a refresh!1

People learning to code who seems to have more interest in that their code works than in why it works. Do yourself a favour and learn something you have an interest in.2

Place: Microsoft, Visual Studio department
Boss: we need to make beautiful changes, and make the development process more simple and beautiful.
Employee 1: let's arrange error messages to be more readable.
Boss: no, I don't need any details of error, just say there is an error.
Employee: But..
Boss: This is genius, do it now.

Arguing with my girlfriend (recalled from my mind, not 100% accurate)
she: What do you expect when you buy an android?
Me: sure thing apple is more "unpack it, use it", easy to use - but android is more like an empty canvas. The first thing when I buy it is setting it up to my needs.
she: You don't understand, what do you expect from your android device?
me: It has to be affordable and work for a certain time
she: No I mean, do you.. when you unpack your phone, expect it TO WORK?
me: Sure, it's not like I buy a pile of trash, I expect it to work
she: you're too stupid, baka
me: ... ? *confused*
she: When you say it is like a canvas, isn't a canvas someday full?
me: yes, every phone, iPhone, Pixel, Samsung, every phone has a limited memory
she: *mad* you don't get it, silly
me: I want to but heh, I don't get it10 -
Did an app for my college.
Everyone liked the features in it.
But when it came to the money part, (I didn't ask the actual cost, I only asked then 10% of actual standard cost) they were like improve it more, do this do that ("for free").
I held onto "If you're good at something, don't do it for free".
Just wasted my time in developing that.2 -
I avoided answering this question because I had no motivation to answer it.
That explains things huh? I don't know how to deal with low motivation. I just try to let it pass which never happens. Or switch to other things I'm more motivated to do.13 -
"The face on this photo is too big". Wow, thanks, it's literally the photo that you've sent me to put on the page. What am I supposed to do, paint some more background in it?2

Buggered by Xcode AGAIN. The inability of the debugger to do basic debugging relinquishes it to the status of "bugger", relieving it of its "de" title.
Can't show some basic expressions... copied and pasted from the running code
I mean seriously, what do you do if the debugger has more bugs than your project you are trying to analyze?2 -
Do less development and more living. I’m tired of all of it. I need a career track change. I don’t know how anyone can keep up with all of it.1
-
The development process that my boss called SCRUM. It was anything but. Management thought they could make us do more work than possible.2

Gentle reminder that you’re just a number to companies. If fucking you raw with an unlubbed cactus will make them more money, they’ll do it and tell you “it’s standard across the industry”7

Colleague from other department : Hey man I don't think my laptop can access to my company mail do you think you can fix it?
Me, newly working as an application programmer : Nah sorry man, perhaps you could ask that technician by the server room. He will know more hardware than I do.
Colleague : But aren't you also an IT specialist?
Me : Did you just assume my occupation? -
What to do when you have no more faith in your capabilities and it feels like your ambition and drive to dev just kinda died... Thinking of becoming a cashier or restocking shelves at wallmart... (-_-)7
-
Switch your tech stack or programming language or development framework to something that you enjoy more.
If it requires to switch the company, do it!
If it requires to learn something new and you think that you don‘t want to, then it‘s probably the wrong goal.4 -
I have now turned the name board in my cubicle to hide my name.
Why you ask? Not because I don't like my name, or dislike my name board (there's this little design on it which is just delightful).
It is to make it a bit more difficult for new morons who don't know who I am or where I sit. Can't do much more than that because I have a desktop.5 -
New year is the only +1 I do not give a fuck about. All it means is I am one year closer to death, so I will smoke one more cigarette after the last, one more cup of coffee with far too much sugar, and I will keep coding one more line after the other, and frankly it is just to distract me from the fact that there is always another +1, one more person to hate, one more word spoken, all so I can get to through one more year. So fuck the new year because there will always be another. But I won't always get a +1 on a rant.5
-
No I will not use Facebook to schedule an appointment.
If you're unwilling to answer the phone and do it yourself, I'm more than willing to take my business elsewhere.3 -
So which are you new year's resolutions?
Mine are:
Learn C,C++ and Node
Organize my time to do more with it
And code5 -
What if you were asked to develop something that goes against your morals or beliefs. Would you do it?
PS - they are willing to pay you more that you ask for29 -
Why the fuck do some companies make it seem like you need them more than they need you? Also, what the fuck is with organizations who antagonize you when you make a small mistake? Do all of the good things we've done get thrown under the bus because of one mistake???? Fucking corporations!!!!!!!5
-
Don't think I could love IT anymore then I do now! Currently and intern and was stressing a small bit about what I wanted to do after college (i.e. web development, mobile development, security) then came to the realisation that I can do whatever i want. I don't think any other profession has such a freedom within industry and that is why love IT so much. Looking forward to many more years of learning and developing my skills2

Question: is it common to a developer to have lots of tasks to do at the same time, so you don't have sure what you need to do first, specially when you have 2 or more urgent projects?
That is one of the things I most hate on managing.8 -
Why do I have to "grow" into a managerial role? I like doing what I am doing and would like to do it more. Anyone with some serious advice on how to stay relevant in software development with greying hair and without growing into people management?4
-
Client A: "So, how about those features I told you yesterday? Can it work? Have you discuss it with your team?"
Me: "Yes, it would possibly have to extend the due date a little bit more..."
Client A: "Meaning?"
Me: "You have to pay more."
*Another 15mins awkward silence moment*
Client A: "I don't understand."
Seriously, get some other guy to do the meeting please...I am not good in PR....3 -
I'm kinda insecure about my main focus being web stuff. I'm pretty good at it and it comes naturally - and more importantly, there are tons of web jobs. But I've always wanted to do something more unique and interesting, you know? I don't wanna introduce myself as web developer.3
-
CNC finished...
Can't do anything else (level it and such) until I get new motors...
the steppers I ordered one month ago returned back to China, FUCKKKKKK
one more month waiting.
So many project ideas.... nothing concrete.
What should I do now? Did my BT controlled car, the CNC, ... Any ideas?9 -
The president and manager where I work always say: "We have to defy the status quo". But when I say "we don't need to do that in this way, we can do it this way which is more efficient". Then they say, "We can't because we have to do everything in the same way". You are just making yourself look stupid.

A trading bot for cryptos. At first, I just want it to do arbitrage trading. When that's working, I want to implement more complex trading strategies.6

How do you guys prevent yourself from overworking? With deadline pressures I feel like it is very easy to work more than your regular 8 hours20
-
Been wondering lately. Do Python devs use type hinting? Shall i start implementing it?
I find it this way, a bit more clear about what the method is doing9 -
Do not, I repeat... DO NOT approve a pull request that you cannot adequately review. You're more to blame than the person who wrote the code in the first place when it fails.

What the tickets I receive daily are like... -
“You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.”2 -
I see more and more people encouraging people to learn Haskell. But why ? What can you do with it, that you would not do with another language? what have you done with haskell?7

Is it just me or does anyone else get more worn out from the meeting a than the actual technical shit... being introverted and having to do so many meetings a day is exhausting5

I hate how Sketch has become a standard in design when it only supports a single platform.
What i hate more is that state "regrettably" on their website but won't fucking do anything about it.
If you want to be treat seriously, get your shit together.3 -
The rest of the team in my bullpin have started to wear headphones more, I wonder if it has something to do with my new mechanical keyboard...4

More like a colleague more than a client, but it doesn't really matter.. They're the same shit, aren't they?
Dude, when you ask for something on Sunday, and spend the day plus Monday and Tuesday not returning my calls or emails... You can go fuck yourself with a huge unicorn's dick. I already moved on to more important shit to do and now you're going to wait until I'm fucking done.
Fucking assholes.1 -
I kind of just came to an insight that my computer is sort of my partner in crime.
I "teach" it how to do something that I'm probably better of not doing or should do in moderation... But then it gives me access to so much of the stuff, I spend a lot more time doing it... more effectively.
So I actually don't save much time because it makes it easier so I now do even more...
I would post some screenshots but its uhh..... NSFW... at least this one is.25 -
>Friends computer starts to "freeze"

I need more coding buddies. -
• Learn new things!
• Continue my programming projects (mostly C#), and eventually publish them!
• Create more programming side-projects!
• Create more music, of various genres, and finish unfinished tracks! (I love music 💙)
• Buy a violin, or another instrument! (I already play harpsichord and piano, and I love them both)
• Buy a new PC setup! (maybe?)
• Get a driver's license!
• Create more music sheets!
• Create more custom maps, on rhythm games! (like osu! or Cytus / Cytunity)
• Make new friends, and meet with my older ones more!
• Go to places, new and old!
• Open myself more to others! (I'm kinda shy)
• Do my university's exams, properly!
• Do my conservatory's exams, also properly!
• Try drawing!
• Try all sorts of new things!
• Get a cat into the family! (I love cats, but I never got one because I don't know how to raise them, yet)
• Be more confident about myself!
And... yeah, I guess that's it :D
What about you?
Have a happy 2019, everyone! 💙2 -
When there were some coding questions to solve that I thought I can do but can't do more than 50% of them! It hurts to heart and I felt so gloomy.

was super tired yesterday and manager asked me if everything is ok, i ended up telling her way more than i should have about basically that I'm looking for other jobs... damn it why did i do that?!7

Fuck, fucking cock sucking stupid ass prick of a little black box, why, why the fuck do you not fucking boot any more, all you have to do is fucking boot but no, that's to much for you to fucking do!
Ah well, good thing it's only a Rpi!
It had a good life, now to wipe the card and start again! Irant no longer accepts keyboard input always on corrupt boot eject and reimage this old girl. rpi fuck it1 -
Need urgent change for the site, it takes 5 minutes I guess, no more than an hour anyway.
Can you do it during your break? Thank you2 -
feel stupid bcoz you underestimated the time to complete the project, feel even more stupid when you do it again and again1

Okay so this is my first desk job. I'm experiencing some personal issues and wondering if they are normal, what you do to combat them, etc.
First of all, some days, I literally almost fall asleep on the job. Caffeine doesn't work much. I know it's just my sleep schedule but what should I do in this situation? What if I actually do fall asleep?
Secondly, I'm finding that my productivity only exists in bursts. I'll do three hours of work in 10 minutes, and then 10 minutes of work in three hours. I can't just catch a stride. How do I become more consistently productive? Should I be more consistent?
My legs hurt. Sitting all day is not for me. I guess this is more situation to situation, and I do walk almost 6k steps a day on my breaks, but it really doesn't feel great most of the day.9 -
How do you write your "identity" in your code so that others can see that it's you who made it?
Do you do it with a simple "made by" or do you write more?17 -
How can you call yourself a code if you live in a city and never experience the outdoors, trees, birds, life. I do it all the time and it gives me so many more ideas and concepts to include in my coding.
#include <outdoors.hpp>6 -
Why is it most companies think being “agile” simply means “let’s say we do work in two week blocks” but without planning or showcases or reviews, without estimations, with ad-hoc tasks inserted continually, priorities changing, tasks moving to the next “sprint” over and over …
But yes, these companies proclaim they are “agile” and do “two week sprints” when it is nothing more than chaos and rhetoric.6 -
I can't believe developers are being told to do better when it comes to master/main. Why don't YOU do better and come up with something more worthwhile than this weak shit?1
-
Nothing more refreshing than seeing the code definitely do the opposite of what its line comments say it does in the first file you open to get to know the new project 😅

Do I see standard li-ion batteries? Can it be replaced by ourselves?
If yes, fantastic, wish more manufacturers support this, especially for workstation / development laptops.18 -
There is how you think a system works, and there is how it actually works. Unit tests help keep those two ideas in sync with each other7

To all the hardcore Vim users:
Why do you prefer Vim over IDEs ?
Are you faster/more efficient using Vim ?
What are it's main benefits/drawbacks in your view ?
I'm familiar with it, but nothing more than that. Usually use it just for quick and dirty edits, but that's all.
I'm seriously considering making the change to Vim and I can't explain why. Read an article once why Vim is still relevant and some features as to why that is, but I'd like to get more opinions on it.22 -
I’m currently working on the profile view in JoyRant, which turns out to be much more work than I thought.
Anyway, after many iterations on the appearance, I’m now finally satisfied about how it looks and works. Especially the category picker (Rants, ++’s, Comments, Favorites).
What do you think? Do you like it?4 -

How everyone else sees it: you fucked up
What do I say to myself: never again!!!

Who of you play/like Tabletop RPGs more than computergames RPGs?
I personally hate it when i dont have the freedom to be the character I want to be in a digital RPG.
So I started looking into Dungeons and Dragons a few years back and finally decided to start playing Pathfinder because it was gaining more and more popularity.
So do you play tabletop RPGs, if so how did you get introduced to it?12 -
Today I heard a discussion on the radio about AI and computers taking over the world. it was a really uneducated and stupid discussion but it got me thinking. What do you guys think about this? Do you think AIs will ever take over the world. Could I have some more educated thoughts?12

Do you think it’s appropriate to use the phrase "dried" in commit messages to refer to removing duplicate code? (DRY = don’t repeat yourself)
I just used it and I’m not sure if it’s ok because some devs might not understand it and the the original letters from DRY went away and became "dried" so it might be even more cryptic.
On the other hand it’s so much more concise having "dried type X" compared to "refactored the code so that it doesn’t contain duplicates of type X"13 -
I love IRC. It seems more fun than forums. You get to talk about programming without people hating you for whatever reason. (Unless you do crazy colors with blinking letters.)1

Damn i want to make an Alarm to alert me when Gradle is finished building.
When waiting gradle build i always get mad because sometime i always left it to do something else and then forgot about it and ended up coming back with more wasted time.6 -
It is weird how nobody calls ++ button as increment button. After all saying I incremented your rant/comment makes more sense than I ++ your....
Or do you call it increment/decrement but just write ++?5 -
Not sure if anyone appreciates but here are the new dR stats!

Do you want to have your personal stats? Ask me, it's already generated. I only have to post it.36 -
I can feel myself becoming more intolerant of people wasting my time and I'm in half a mind to do nothing about it.
Maybe they won't bother me if I'm not my perky self 🔪😱 -
That moment when you worked with bug 2 days and now it's a feature! I need to drink more coffee because it helps - Ready to do more!

It seems like sensitive websites that need more priority to work fine are the ones that do not. I'm talking about government, school, bank, & service provider sites. Or it's just my retarded country.9

I wonder what the average lifespan is of a developer.
Is it higher or lower then the average life expectancy?
Does it have to do with our mindset? Or are our clients so terrible that we have more stress? If so does devRant lower our stress?4 -
Okay so I just went from getting no feedback on job applications to having more appointments than I can manage.... You'd think this is a good thing but how do you do this with or raising suspicion... Guess it means I did something right in all my hard work and late nights....11

Today was one of those days when I could write a program to do something for me that'd taken me hours if not days to do. Now it took no more than a single hour in total.

How do gophers (Go devs) feel about the new Go logo ?
I can get used to it but it feels more like a logo of a company that might rival Uber.
The gopher gave it an easy to use and understand feel, this new one gives a fast and sleek look. It wants to showcase "Fast" more than anything else.10 -
What do you think about my language choice set for the future (knowing I want to work as a software and app developer) ? Anything to add / remove ?
- C++: Fast and well-documented, so I think it's a standard even in the next decades to come
- Java: Although I think that this language will more likely die in the next decade, I'll maybe keep this language because some dinosaurs enterprises still rely on it. Ah and mainly because it's still widely used in Android apps programming. For now.
Talking about Android, does learning Kotlin worth it ?
- Python: Will mainly use it for automation and prototyping, but nothing more, as it seems not to be widely use in the software development field (or it is ?). I'll also keep it for hobbies, however.
- Rust: This language seems to be a rising star in the industry since it is very clean, classic, as fast as C / C++ while introducing more safety. However I'll wait a bit for this one since it requires more complicated and abstract knowledge I do not have yet.
- Javascript (or more particularly JSX): Hurts to say I'll keep it, even more than Java. I'd let it in the web development hell I won't step in if it was not used in webapps / cross-platform mobile applications. And since this kind of stuff looks trendy, I don't think I can avoid it. Plus, I liked working with React Native. Sorry.
- C#: Seems to be a must when working on Windows software interfaces, so guess I'll have to learn this one. Will do so gladly, it looks better than Java17 -

is it just me or are others also noticing that our society is getting similar to the one seen in Idiocracy [the movie]?
I mean... I'd understand one or two dumb things: people do it, realize how stupid it is and move on. But now it's more like the other way around: people do something smart, realize it, undo it and move on.
Has anyone else seen Idiocracy?20 -
Just created a tiny (not yet stable) selector library that allows you to change properties on multiple elements just like you would do on a single one. It also has some more useful features. https://github.com/kosimst/kazel
Still in development, but prototype should work. What do you think?6 -
Is it just me or are there others who like programming and enjoy the work but just can't do it all day. After 10 hours I don't even want to look at a screen much less code more or read about it.6

Well payed co-worker is always crying about others salary being more than his...Fucking hate that guy. Remember he is just a fresher and is being paid way more than he fucking deserves. Today he exploited someone to gain access of other co-worker's pay scale information and kept obsessing over it all day long...!
Fucking prick is going to get away with it...And I can't do anything about it...!!!4 -
I was probably about 5 when I got this. It took 8 AA batteries and all I knew was how to get it to do tic tac toe. All other games confused me but I loved it. I wanted more.1

Oh man. When I look for a job after I'm done with school, I need to watch out for those "pay-per-line" bullshit contracts. More lines? Everyone can do that, but it will cause inefficiency just for the money. I could make a fucking Python Hello World program have 100 needed lines if I wanted to, but why would I? More lines = more typing ≠ more work.3

Being an up and coming web developer I get more concerned every day about net neutrality being repealed. Who else shares my concern and how do you think it will effect web developers if it is?2

I want to properly get into other programming languages like Java and C#, but I keep going back to Python because it's so much more familiar and I'm comfortable with it. :(
What do? Do others have this kind of problem too?15 -
1. Use all my vacation days
2. Learn something that has nothing to do with computers (seriously I bore myself sometimes in conversation)
3. Drink more rum and learn about it at the same time
4. Make time for friends and family
5. No massive outages!
Mostly I want to step out of work and be more sociable1 -

My team has a huge, high priority project to make a very complex system a lot more simple.
It has to follow the same rules as the current system and do everything it does.
Can I kill myself now? -
Hey. I would like to do a research on developer burnout analyzing post from developer sites like Stackoverflow or devRant. I think it's getting a more and more common problem in the developer community. What do you think about it? Any ideas about how should i identify the symptoms from only programming related posts?9
-
Why do some countries do everything they can to stifle industry and economy?
I'm in South Africa and looking to build a high end rig. With local distributors a PC in the Excellent and above category of Logical Increments cost 3x as much as it should. Importing it myself would cost even more for shipping.
Guess I'll stick to a potato for now.13 -
im new to programming and teaching myself the more i learn the discouraging it becomes. P.S do the guys at stack overflow hate noobs or 'rookie mistakes' because for a community that is supposed to be about answering questions they sure do seem to hate it when I ask them6

One thing that I hate more than anything else in what I do: Waiting
Whether it is compiling, training, loading, IDE indexing or building I just despise it. It gets me out of my flow and forces me to be bored and often unable to do anything else because my pc is busy6 -
i swear to GOD i am so fucking productive, happy, full of life, thankful to live, WAY MORE PRODUCTIVE, WAY MORE NORMAL, WAY MORE PHYSICALLY BEAUTIFUL, WAY MORE MENTALLY STABLE, i get WAY MORE SHIT DONE, i appreciate people, i help people, i ACTUALLY BECOME SUCCESSFUL, i am actually WILLING TO LEARN ADVANCED SHIT THAT ARE BEYOND MY UNDERSTANDING *BECAUSE* IT IS SOMETHING I ENJOY TO FUCKIN DO, WAY MORE FUCKIN POSITIVE, WAY MORE FUCKIN SOCIAL, all of this --- when i do NOT fucking study or go to the fucking cuckold college.....5

Guys i had a question...do people managers get more salary than developers? If they do then would i ever earn more than them in future and how long will it take for me to earn more money than them? Dont get me wrong, i dont have anything against them, i just want devs who do all these stressful complicated stuff to have more salary than people managers...your thoughts please, thanks9

when the setup of programming environment takes more effort than the code.
and you're like fuck it i'll do it online!7 -
Finally took the time to start learning Angular 2. I wanted to do it right so I set up the development environment with webpack. Man does Angular 2 take a lot longer to get setup properly versus Angular 1. I mean it's worth it to do it properly but it was a lot more labor intensive getting a good dev environment setup than I had anticipated.4

You will get far more rejections than acceptance. A lot of the time it has more to do with the interviewer and not the candidate (assuming the candidate is a genuine hard worker). The job search process is similar in this regard to finding a mate or compiling your code.
Keep moving forward! -
The most fun I've ever had coding was creating a hidden object game in school (with Flash/ActionScript3). I even had a dude do voiceovers, it was dope! I would love to learn more gaming development but no time. :(
-
For me it was not do much a choice.
I started out using basic and simple text display (graphics existed but was quite difficult).
For a long time I was the sole or part of a pair of devs so specializing was not possible and once we grew to such a size I already was quite proficient in all areas from hardware to customer support and education.
But from that time onto today I have gravitated towards a more backend role mainly because I lack a good sense or visual design.
I know it something looks good, but doing it my self results in more boring or plain designs where more thought goes into UX than nice looking design.
That said, if we do web applications I can still keep up since it usually is more ux heavy ;)
But when it comes to adding background images, nice color sets and such I gladly defer that to colleagues with a better design sense. -
Architect: Oh hey Zaphod65, let me know when you're in. Some strangeness in [system], ta
Me: Already here actually [Archtect], what's up?
Architect: oh hi well let me do a little more digging. it may be in frontend
Me: ...
Why? Why do I *care* if you haven't even made sure it's my fault yet?!1 -
What do you guys think about competitive programming, how does it impacts your programming in the long run?
I feel depressed when I take more than enough time to complete a competitive programming challenge marked as "Easy". 😥1 -
"Programming is a craft. At its simplest, it comes down to getting a
computer to do what you want it to do (or what your user wants it to do). As a programmer, you are part listener, part advisor, part interpreter, and part dictator. You try to capture elusive requirements and find a way of expressing them so that a mere machine can do them justice. You try to document your work so that others can understand it, and you try to
engineer your work so that others can build on it. What's more, you try to do all this against the relentless ticking of the project clock. You work small miracles every day.
It's a difficult job. "
- The pragmatic programmer -
I and my team mate are assigned a task and if we find 2 or more probable approaches to it we naturally ask our supervisor how would he like us to proceed, with which design and approach.
He downright answers, "I don't care how you do it, just do it and finish it by xyz date".
I mean WTF? What are you our supervisor for?!?! This is also a part of your job dude!!7 -
It's getting to the point where I can put on my resume "make Word formating more gooder". It's amazing how dumb this is making me feel for how often I have to do it.1

Has anyone ever tried to use a devices accelerometer to determine speed before?
The way i plan to do it, it should be more accurate than using GPS. Just wondering if anyone has ever done something similar that i can use32 -
Why old video games, kinda PS1 aesthetics, feel so much more magic and fun, and modern games feel like dystopia depression?
It has to do with child memories? I think there is something more to that. E.g. Colin mcrae 2.0 although has worst physics compared to later titles like Need For Speed, is so much more fun to play and get hooked to it (if example does not work for you, replace it accordingly).
I think there is something to do with the lower quality graphics that trigger imagination, but i am not sure. What is your opinion ?8 -
Sucks when you are more excited about a project than anyone else!
F$#k it. Instead of doing it for the company I'll do it for myself as a side project!

I thought I was decent at Java until I saw it in action over an internship this summer... is it always so complicated or do I have more to learn?2

How do you think about Laravel?
Does it made PHP more simple or just satisfied lazy developers 😀?10 -
So the client ask for a new super urgent request and want to see it completed in 10 minutes.
Not that I can't do it, I just need 2-3 minutes to do it, but because of their rudeness, I left the job for my little cute interns who work at my company.
Takes her more than hours to complete.
Sorry client. LOL1 -
How do you actually structurize _big_ projects and still use js components?
_big_ = more than 300 pages. Seriously. Not addtodo, listtodos and thats it. A huge fucken amount of pages.2 -
I dont like programming languages where "there is more than one way to do it".
There should be one way to do things, it makes it easy for developers to understand code others have written, it makes it easier to start working in new teams etc etc.23 -

Me: "You should go with this other option for the software. It's cheaper and you can do more."
Client: "No. This more expensive and less-capable thing I chose is better. We'll make it work."
[several weeks pass]
Client: "This isn't working. Why didn't it work?"
Me: "You have to upgrade to a more expensive plan, or switch to the other solution I told you about."
Client: "No. We'll make it work."
Me: *facepalm*3 -
Do you have a routine? I work from home everyday since quarantine and I don't think we are going back to the office.
I would like to be more productive, not in the sense of forcing myself to do more job and add more stress, no one is complaining about the time it takes me to finish tasks.
I'm looking for a way to scatter my working hours so I have chunks of focus and chunks of breaks in which I go out for a walk or something instead of a big chunk of focus mixed with distraction. I'm behaving as if it were a "9-5 job" when it is actually "8 hours per day" with flexible schedule.8 -
"This {{issue that the client has brought upon themselves}} is a huge problem for us, we need to be able to {{do something stupid that the software was never meant to do and will probably just cause more problems than it solves}}. We need this to be fixed now. We can't continue to function without it!"
-
I'm curious, why do you guys seem to always put up with "I changed my mind, I need it by Friday" kind of requests? "I've pulled an all-nighter, because customer wanted it before the holidays" - didn't you agree to do it after the holidays? Did the customer come by with a bag of money for you to put away everything else for them? Even if you do get paid extra, do you really get that much more to make your suffering worth it?6
-
Do what's necessary to solve the problem. A little more? Sure. But don't overdo it. That's true most of the time at least.1

> IHateForALiving: Mister Supervisor, I need to do X, I know how to do it with Vue but I can't do it in AngularJS, how did you do it in the past?
> Supervisor: It's a mess, you need to do A, B, C, D and E, but webpack interferes so you have to come up with something to bypass the whole thing
> Me: ok whatever thx
> Supervisor: I know it's a problem, a more modern framework would do it in a heartbeat :(
Those are bold words for the guy who saw my first PoC, noticed I was using Vue and made me throw everything in the rubbish, explicitly ordering me to use AngularJS. -
When I am stuck on a problem, I try to get outside and do something physical. Go for a run, jump on the bike. Find it clears my head and helps me to see the code more clearly.
-
Damn, we seriously need a more professional system to test (the appearance of) our web apps in all browsers.
Also especially the resizing behaviour with flex items & Co.
What do you use for that? It can be a paid solution, if it is not too expensive.5 -
You know when your one man project has come along so far that it suddenly is more fun to use it than develop it. How do you guys muster up the discipline to keep working towards the goal?5
-
Answer this questionnaire.
Be 100% honest and real:
1. has a degree helped you learn anything useful?
2. has a degree helped you get a job? not because of knowledge but because of degree?
3. was it worth it going to college to get the degree?
4. do you regret going to college to get your degree?
5. do you believe a degree has value?
6. by the nature of economy, the more something exists in circulation (e.g. money), is it worth less or more?
6.1. if every year there are more and more college degrees in existence, is the value of degree worth less or more?
7. do you believe you are hired to work a job because of your knowledge or your degree?39 -
Anything of the form "write a <complex data structure>". To be expected to do that from memory is ridiculous. It's far far far more important to understand the data structure and be able to explain how it works.
-
Do you know the feeling when you create a project, work on it for a few months, realize that it could be done better so you rethink and rewrite it, then after half a year you think that it's not good enough once again so you recreate it from scratch once more, then you get bored and leave the project for like 2 years and when you want to come back you see how bad the code is so you do one more rewrite? Well I do.
"Coming soon" since 2013! Starts to look good tho.4 -
I honestly love arguments that deal with programming and the "proper" ways to do things in the workplace. It makes work slightly more enjoyable lol.1
-
If I would have gotten my last feature request as a part of the (barley existent) specifications i wouldn't have needed more than one week to do it. At least no one is complaining about me being slow.
-
More and more, I am getting frustrated/depressed from the attitude of our customers who complain, moan and get angry about issues in their infrastructure, while at the same time, refusing to pay more so the issues could be mitigated.
Like, a client's angry with us today for having one of their non-production-critical databases inaccessible for... Hmm... About 8 hours now (So a whole workday).
Like... I get it, some of your employees couldn't work with it offline, but like... What the hell do we do? You keep data from as far back as several years ago in there, without partitioning, without exports, in a mix of innodb and myisam, so when the DB crashes, and its replication has to be reset from zero, reimporting all the data takes hours upon hours, and importing .sql files just takes time.
Or another client who got angry when their app fell out of the internet, cuz one of their myisam-based log tables crashed, and had to be repaired, with data spanning several years back, meaning it took hours to fix...
The more I work with these "basic" and "simple" infrastructure designs that is *not* redundant, or HA, the more I wonder -- How do the big names out there do it? How do you design systems with fault tolerance so a single DB table crash doesn't lead to the whole app getting inaccessible?
We have... One, exactly one, client, who uses MariaDB with Gallera, and that cluster is *amazing*, it just keeps chugging along, without a care in the world. But it cost them quite a lot, as they had to buy 3 DB servers, instead of 1...1 -
Xcode is frustratingly slow and horrible. They engineered it really badly. Why don't you just please collaborate with these intelligent Jetbrains guys? No, you won't do that because ego or because money is more important than your developers' happiness. I do not enjoy this career path to your ecosystem anymore.2

React + Redux + Router is do fucking awesome stack. Love It much more than angular 1.x. App works so fast, is scalable and easy to maintain.
Reactive paradigm for the winner!2 -
I love it when a coding assignment is to take the last assignment and do one thing more optimized !!! 😄😄
All the hard stuff is already done and all I have to do is some optimization that I’ve done before in other languages and just have to implement in this one 😄6 -
I am currently using angular from 1.5 years. With angular 2 coming to production i was thinking of moving to it.
But i have some questions:
I am hesitating to move because it encourages typescript over javascript. It adds 1 more dependency to my code ( code will break after angular updates and also when typescript updates).
I do not have any such problem learning vuejs or reactjs.
So, which one do i choose.4 -
Client wants me to document the updated patch in the system... In detail. I just want to upgrade their server memory but noooooo. They want me to detail it all in step-by-step, including change impact, description task, expected time duration, back-out plan.
The first time I had to do this, it was cute. But now it's FUCKING ANNOYING ON HOW DETAIL THEY WANT ME TO PUT IN!!!
Client: "OK, so you wanna upgrade the server memory. What do you need to bring into the data centre?"
Me: "Just my laptop. I'm just configuring your underutilised server memory and upgrade it."
Client: "Good. Put that in the document, including your laptop serial #, make and model."
Me: *Screaming internally* -
I just work without thinking about whether I want to do it or not. The more you think about it, the more you don't want to do it. Just get to it.
-
What's wrong with me?
Almost every day I do 1-2 hours extra-time to finish some problem I stucked with. I can't just turn off my computer at the end of day like my colleagues do. It always seems like I doing nothing while trying to solve some problem without any result. So I feel guilty and try to do more. It exhausting me and I do even worse. And so on. Recursively. Any solutions?
Thanks in advance! =)4 -
Client: How many days do you need for this project
Me: 6 months
Client: That's too much. I researched and found that it shouldn't consume more than 3 months
Me: I'm sure you didn't researched on gradle building process (-_-) -
If you do not push something (language, education, people, cars, design, medicine ...etc etc) how the hell do you expect to mature, surpass expectations and become better. Java didn't start off as good or as bad as it is today. It was through testing, abuse, use and pushing it harder do more and more amazing things that it wasn't built for. PHP has changed alot since I started using and it's through people efforts that it gets better. Before the javascript wave came it was a nuisance to use and sucked as most browsers had it switched off by default but it's become more secure, fluent and able to do more amazing things and people are loving it right now.
I really wish people would stop with half arsed and uneducated comments.1 -
There once was a sysadmin, Eddie,

What's up with those fucking internships? Is it a new way to exploit people and have someone do all the hard work that no one else wants to do but for free?
Oh and by the way, if your company is worth more than 10 million dollars and you still have unpaid internships FUCK YOU.5 -
Both team members quit on a hackathon 2 days before the deadline. I was more curious whether I can do it than desperate, but I spent those 2 days coding. Didn't succeed though.

Those of you with an app or productivity web service, do you charge monthly? If so, why? I understand if it is your primary source of income, but do you have ethical or integrity reasons related to price? I've been contemplating this lately and I'd like more Dev input.5

How is it possible that nextjs developers could build a much more sophisticated web platforms than i do, much faster much more rapidly and easily and ship it to production for almost no costs, not even using any devops pipeline, unit or untegration testing, while i do all of that + devops and it costs me to pay for servers on aws?????
Literally what a nextjs developer can build in 1 month it would take me at least 3-4 months11 -
Why do people think that putting in more hours = more productivity and sitting extra makes you a more hard working employee?
Today out producer guy indirectly tried to tell me to 'be more productive' and to show 'some dedication'; I asked him outright that is he implying that staying beyond office hours is how I'm suppose to do it and the asshole replies how else would you? (in a non aggressive way)
Fuck this attitude. 😐2 -

Sometimes that means not using work time efficiently, sometimes that means I get stuck on a simple problem for too long because I don’t think through it. Also, I’m trying to love coding more. It takes a lot of code to get a small result sometimes, and that’s ok. I got hooked on being able to do big things with little code from the start. As we get better we know there’s more that can be done, but we are more familiar with just how much work it really is. At the same time we are more capable than ever of doing it. Just gotta embrace the suck, then love your finished product.1

Do you always make sure to understand the basics/fundamentals of a technique/solution/tool/.. you're using ?
I don't do it all the time and I feel that it's something I should do more often (or always?).3 -
Inheriting a project from a previous developer (front end stuff) where it takes more than 10 seconds for sass to compile. Like do you really need all this shit the site has bloody 4 pages.2

Seriously Pope Gregory you couldn't make a more consistent calendar? We have extra days why does February have 28 still. Making my calendars program repeat events infinitely more complicated. (Do not get me started on date format inconsistencies). Thats it I'm staying single getting too afraid of the word 'date'.2

I'm excited about flutter, looks like it will make cross platform mobile dev more fun.
Also dx12 rtx real time raytracing. It would be cool to work on it at work. We do animations for short movies at work and render times are huge now.
I'm kinda suspicious for both though. Couldn't check it out yet.1 -
Why would anyone want to study and have years of experience in boring-ass jobs like QA, BI,specific enterprise applications consultant(e.g SAP/Salesforce), PC technician, helpdesk, integrator or sales.
I understand people who lack experience in more sexy stuff and have no choice, or do this temporarily. But I met some people who do it for years out of their own will. Why? There are far more interesting jobs in the tech world. -
Am i the only one who thinks TypeScript is not necessary, more some kind of overhead creation?
Whats your opinion about TS? Do you use it or just "good" old plain JavaScript?5 -
Did it ever happen to you that you were needed to map a mental and overly complex for no reason db schema to a simple json, and you hate yourself more every key you press because rewriting it more efficiently and simply is never an option?
How do you cope with managers and legacy code?
If it works does not necessarily mean that we should keep it, jesus christ.2 -
evaluating whether i should make it more agile and flexible or just get it slapped into production. always waging war in between proper developer testing vs my own uat testing (of which we as devlopers also need to do)

Best part for me is when you see the final product. I do not mean once you're done working on the entire project (which is never true, always more to do! xD) but when you add a feature and it works.
Actually seeing it work, that gives me such a good, fulfilling feeling.
That has always been what attracted me to programming, or.. the main thing. -
"I love making the stuff, that’s sort of the core of it. I love creating the stuff. It’s so satisfying to get from the beginning to the end, from a shaky nothing idea to something that’s well formed and the audience really likes. It’s like a drug: You keep trying to do it again and again and again. I’ve learned from experience that if you work harder at it, and apply more energy and time to it, and more consistency, you get a better result. It comes from the work." - Louis C.K.2

I saw this from netflix's screensaver-esq display.
That's a great title!... thinking of orchestrating one's internal processes with the subtext of potential inner demons...
but ofc it has nothing to do with the tech term daemon...
I'm pretty sure that I need a break but I have more I need to do.2 -
Any tips on taking more of an architect role and dev team manager? Also on becoming more business oriented?
Kinda being pushed into it by life but I'm not sure how to do it. I am checking some O'Reilly books as a starting point.1 -
Google app script is awesome ! Now I don't have to open shitty mails they get trashed and I don't have to star important mails which they get automatically everyday ;) still lot it can do...way to explore more ...

Do you feel that people are prefering to go through a bunch of tuts than sitting down and read a book.?
SO has made it so easy -- got an error just google and fix it. No need to bother about underlying concepts.
SO is great but do you feel like it's making younger programmers more focused on trouble-shooting rather than solving and understanding.?1 -
Has it ever happened to you that you do not want to program any more?
It is frustrating... Sometimes I would like to start an idea but then .. nothing, stopped.
How do you solve this kind of situation?
It's not only about work, but I mean also in the freetime where you Can develop your idea or your expirement5 -
So what Linux distribution do you guys use for regular usage, development and stuff..
I'm currently on Linux mint, planing to upgrade to a more PRO distribution for the heck of it...17 -
How you achieve your goals. I have started several projects throughout my life and, at a certain point, I change the direction. Now I wonder if it had been more consistent, perhaps it would have been more successful. What do you think about being consistent or changing direction when faced with difficult circumstances?2

Do the first project for a cheap price, I swear I will pay you more money for the next ones.
I've heard this so many times now, it actually makes me wanna kill myself when I hear it again from someone new.6 -
Finally got Proton to run arbitrary programs with some tinkering. Works fairly well for running nigh anything I throw at it, even some random non-game programs. Might do this more often. (Next up: DXVK)10

I need an advise...
I am quite used to work in PHP. But I feel like it's getting older and older. Is there another comparable language? I'm thinking about Ruby or something...
What do you think? Do you have a more modern language in mind? Is it easy to use?21 -
Are emacs users really be like polishing their configs for years, for decades even? Emacs users of devrant, do you really end up with an ide that is more efficient than anything else? Is it worth it?2

After a few days of Mac. I seem to understand the pain of using a Mac. Sometimes doing a simple thing in Linux, it requires 2x efforts to do so in Mac. It is very user friendly, but it needs more developer friendly. It is very different.13

I recently came across the "Xposed framework" for Android and it seems really really interesting to me.
I use it to playback songs on YouTube (app) while accessing other apps (simple but helpful) . Anybody else with any modules/experience/knowledge about the same, do comment, I wanna know more about it.7 -
I think that leaving a child of just a year or even few months in front of the tv equals to an adult watching porn, the more your baby keep watching the cartoons on the TV the more he is not satisfied and would like to watch something BETTER. Now let's compare it to us as Adults, the more asses and holes you watch on pornhub the more you don't feel satisfied and you keep looking for something more exciting, and that's how you damage your brain.
What do you think?11 -
Is there any advantage of spending more effort and time on an opensource image annotation application?
https://naturalintelligence.github.io/...
I've just done with imglab v2. Two reasons I've developed it is to use it without installation (on web) and integration with open libraries (face++ currently) for fast annotation.
It has more features than above 2 and many are in queue. But as their are many annotation library already available, I'm not able to decide if it is worthy to spend more time on this.
What do you suggest? -
Has anyone an idea how to make a Microsoft Surface Pro more "interesting"? Got one this week but I really don't like Windows. But I do like the ability to draw and write on it...7

So I fell for the vim meme some weeks ago and am now very used to it, but I think I'm still less productive than I was before. The problem is that I can't just go back to a bloated IDE.
So now I'm sitting here, unsatisfied with every editor, bothering so much I don't do my work.
I guess I'll just have to configure it more to my needs and learn some more features but still do I kinda regret switching.4 -
Who the fuck invented recursive😡, it sucks in numerical computation, it takes excessive amount of memory, recomputation and fffffffuck😡. To calculate fibonacci of 50, it feels like MARK I. fuck they do nothing more than calling, like Peter calling Peter...😡8

My focus is cloud infrastructure and developer tools. I like it because of the complexity and the feeling that enabling developers to do more is a multiplier of good I can do in the world.

Any advice for when ur managers don't do their job well and if u say something is not done right, then they will let u do it?
FFS im tired that shit not being done right but im not looking for doing their job for them while they get paid more and sit in facebook3 -
Dear genie, make me take more notes. My brain is overconfident and thinks (hah) it can do/remember more than 1 thing at once. It's just a whole lotta "Hey, this is the solution to your problem! Also, look at that butterfly! By the way, I have no idea what the solution could be."4

Why do some hosting services with MySQL not allow triggers and stored procedures / functions?
Had never tried to use them and now I've done it and deployed a site, I discover I can't create triggers, and that some hosting provider don't allow users to do them... this is a rant but more of a question, as I didn't know and maybe there's lore to it you do know...1 -

You can find almost anything on webshops like Amazon, but you can't buy almost anything. In many cases they don't ship outside the US and if they do it costs a fortune. In Europe the range of products is very limited in comparison to the US. If you do find the same items, they cost more than double the price compared to the US, and then they don't ship to my country anyway. And if they do, most of the times we have to pay VAT twice. It's FUCKING UNFAIR and OUTRAGEOUS that in AD2017 consumers have so different conditions depening on geographic location. It sucks to live in Europe when it comes to shopping, and it sucks even more to live in Åland Islands when it comes to shopping online.

Anyone here working with quantum computing stuff? If so, what do you do exactly? Are you more of a theoretical physicist or a programmer? Does it pay well? Is it fun?
I'm learning about QC and considering specializing in it, but idk if it's a good career path.2 -

"Says who? Just so you know, the people who talk that way think that monkeys can do this. They take all this monkey crap and just stick it in a briefcase completely unaware that their success depends on something more than their shoeshine. YOU are the product. You- FEELING something. That’s what sells. Not them. Not sex. They can’t do what we do, and they hate us for it. " - Don Draper1

good evening devs,
any suggestions/tips, on how to learn more efficiently, more effectively, more structured?
Recently, after school/work, my discipline to learn is lost a bit..
Because, watching tutorials or reading, while programming the shown, isn't the right thing for me.
I need definitely much more practice , to keep shit in my brain.
Maybe i need ideas? small projects and then make it bigger and bigger?
How do you learn?
Whats your way to practice?1 -
I'm tired and stressed and it's friday
all my work is done that is required for monday, i should do testing and code cleanup, but i'm burned out so instead i'm gonna play with grafana and see what I can do with it, seems cool and something more interesting to do than code cleanup and wanting to cry2 -

So noob question, is automated web scraping a thing? What would you do if you wanted to grab the same information off similar sites and store it in a table that can be manipulated later? All you would have to do is enter the web site link after you finished coding it. I've used Chrome web scraping extensions but want a more automated solution.10

The more I work with videojs-ima, the more I am convinced it is not the solution for what we are doing. Any time I try to figure out how to do a thing on my current project, the answer is usually "don't". Then I need to hammer the app til "don't" becomes "does sorta"6

Me: I hate our current graphing frontend, its super hard to do anything more complex in here and it looks like it was made in the last century, we need a more modern solution!
Also me: Uuuugh, this modern graphing frontend lags my browser soooo much!
Why is dealing with graphs so hard? D:1 -
How do folks feel about IoC/DI?
I used Spring and Angular for the first few years of my career, so it seemed like it was a mandatory pattern of a framework and my team would never deploy an app that couldn't use it (even if it was just a Lamda or something, we found smaller DI libraries). Now I work in Express and React, and I look back and feel that those patterns required me to write more code, created more complexity, and wasn't any easier to read or understand, and was way more bug prone, and debugging the injection pipeline itself was effectively not possible.
I guess I'm wondering: what do people feel that it buys them?15 -
A question for people who are active on the open source community or anyone who succeeds in crwating some small personal coding projects.
How do you do it?
Do you have any advice on how to be more efficient when working on personal projects?
Each time I get an idea i try to start it but just give up or get discouraged by some related setups.
Also how do you find interesting existing projects to contribute to?
Please help. I wanna do more but never do anything. Am I alone in this situation?? I dont wanna get stuck in this loop anymore.2 -
I really hate it when you are reading DevRant on a public wifi network, and the network decides to drop the "more rants" packet, that you are blocked from loading more rants. Why do most applications stop loading more pages after a single request times out, it's really annoying2

Do you think the "Fix one bug, two more shall take it's place" is a real thing? Have you ever experienced it?6

Using the Devrant iOS app Incan't scroll down to load more posts. Is that intentional?
At least I cannot do it while using filters. My "front page" uses some filters and I can only see 10 posts. When I scroll down hoping to load more posts I attempt to "drag den to load more" but the app doesn't load more posts. I just see a spinner that vanished.
Bug or feature?2
