I made a ridicously hilarious hack recently. My refrigerator it's broken, it has a huge leak of water, my hack was to let the water flow in a plastic box and make a circuit with two water level sensors, a relay and a PIC16F628A to activate a pump that sucks water away through a tube that I wedged intlside the gasket of the washbasin. This gave me the time to buy a newer and better one.15

For checking user and password, he did not query a database, but instead he checked information in a HIDDEN DIV in the html page.

Apple vs. Microsoft: who sucks more?
At first glance, it's obvious that Apple sucks more. Their overpriced products are so bad that they rely heavily on vendor lock-in and cult-like brainwashing.
Then again, Apple's vendor lock-in also acts as buyer lock-out so that it's easy to avoid Apple. Basically, Apple sucking more also means they suck less. Think different indeed.
Microsoft on the other hand sucks more because their crap is so ubiquitous that it's difficult to avoid Microsoft.
That looks like a draw - but here's the tie breaker: Microsoft tries to ape Apple, BUT! Microsoft even sucks at copying Apple's suck.
So here's the final verdict: Microsoft sucks more.38 -
Working at SQUARE ENIX is a love/hate thing tbh. It's fun and stressing at the same time. Pay's not very good , office's fine, but the management is...there's a massive room for improvement, at the very least.

Marketing pushed deadline for release one week earlier. That sucks.
What sucks even more is that frontend was not ready, but our frontend guy promised to take a look over the weekend and finish it. Thats cool we might make.

Been a really sad day today. Learnt this morning that my friend had died. Couldn't concentrate on anything but managed to give a nice report to boss on video call. Tried coding, but could only code a dropbox before giving up and firing up PES. Was so absent-minded the AI kept hammering me. Error: can't resolve ./src
Guess what? ./src exists. So I go searching for an answer, and it turns out webpack looks for ./src/index.js and if it can't find it then it throws an error.
But the error message is: can't resolve ./src
The issue was reported ages ago but webpack devs never improved the error message

I hate that I have to be careful of what I say about specific languages so that I don't hurt peoples feelings. If you get upset because someone called Java or PHP ugly, get over it.
All languages are shit. If you have a favorite, good for you. IMO you only limit yourself if you think that .Net is always the answer, or if you think that every project needs to be in a JVM.
We often forget to ask why a language exists before we start to use it. No sane person is going to use Java to develop a quick one time script. Same can be said for all languages.
So when someone tells you, "Python sucks" they probably mean, "Python sucks for this use case". Except for Perl.

Xcode storyboard sucks!. At least it could've had a code version of the storyboards (like android XML layouts) so that at least you could properly copy paste a layout from somewhere. You can get mad about Apple releasing stuff that Android has been doing for 10 years. But also get mad about you not being able to pick up and Android phone that is not a buggy mess. I will pick Apples pretentious products over wanting to throw my phone on the floor at least 5 times a day because swiping doesn't work the first 10 times or because I have to select an input field 6 thousand times for it to highlight or because every action has a delay for no apparent reason.

been a couple of years since I was last active here.
Source Engine still has its claws on me today - but Nii broke free and properly got into other engines and made some cool projects! We both study different stuff now.
I tried to get into Unity a couple of times now, even made a small VR grappling hook prototype once (def not nauseating). But it's hell. It's kinda sad that modern engines don't understand the needs of level designers as well as Source's Hammer. Even though Source is outdated af.
Thing is, I am more and more starting to doubt that this is what I wanna do in life. Game industry sucks. Ad industry sucks even more. I might just become a tree and produce oxygen.

Being a team leader some times sucks have to take responsibility for everyone's elses functionality that doesn't work or wasn't tested in production. Leads often ends up working overtime fixing everyone elses work :(1

There is this shitty database that still exists. It's called CrateDB. It's a SQL layer on a NoSQL. I don't know whose brilliant idea was that but any which way, IT SUCKS. Documentation said that the latest version supports table joins. Yeah, join queries take just ~300 seconds to run. Congratulations!

Well that would probably be my classmate. He sucks at programming but I wanted him to do at least something. So I dictated him code he should simply type down: "for ( blah foo colon foos ) { ..." And he's like "for ( blah foo .. foos ) {". Colon means " Doppelpunkt" in German which means "double dot" if translated literally. So he wrote ".." instead of ":".

I'm looking at old code that I wrote around half a year ago, and noticed that my coding style changed over time (relying more on arguments to pass messages between commands and functions, rather than sourcing the result of a command). I feel like this old code isn't truly mine anymore. It's thousands upon thousands of lines of code though... Given that, would you rewrite it or just move along with the existing design? Look, I get it. Wordpress sucks. It’s bloated. It’s slow. It’s not elegant. It’s a nightmare to debug and code for. The plugin ecosystem is an insecure, confusing mess of outdatedness and issues.
We can all agree that in a perfect world all power to determine everything about a website, from the code to the content, would be in our power as developers. But we don’t live in a perfect world. People want convenience, even at the cost of performance and security, and they will inevitably resent technologists who refuse to give it to them. We do ourselves and our customers a disservice when we only do what we feel is in our own best interests or preferences and not what will help them with their realities.
Yes, it sucks. Yes, it’s a pain. Yes, it’s in demand and there’s nothing any of us can do to change that.

I just need to vent about how frustrating and terrible Windows is.
It almost seems like consistentsy and attention to detail are completely foreign concepts to Microsoft. Everything from simple text selection (WHY DOES A DOUBLE CLICK INCLUDE THE TRAILING SPACE) to using advanced software feels like a chore.
Any sympathizers here? What problems do you need to vent about when trying to navigate your OS?
FWI I'm not a Mac or Linux user, so I have the joy of using Windows at home. I wish I could switch, but I prefer full access to my Steam library so I'm stuck with this option.7 -

Today I took the time to figure out the API for a shipping website.
I was super proud of this and figured that this could be useful for our application but the guy who has been there for 5+ years was like "no we have used an API for a previous client and caused the application to slow down by 1.2 seconds."
Of course in my mind I'm like, "but what was the API that you used? When I use it, it's running and returning in milliseconds. Surely you're not doing it right."
Of course because of his seniority I'm not going to say that.
It just sucks a lot because I spent a lot of time reverse engineering the API. It would have been nice to have been noticed for that work.5 -

Everytime I want some widget or something even simple, they tell me to use custom renderers (write it natively on each platform)..
so, how is that supposed to be cross-platform..
after all, like I always said, to use xamarin efficiently, you must have good knowledge on native development for each platform10 -
The problem with Windows Store apps is that they are not uniform. They are all layed out differently from each other. Their navigation sucks. They use too much mystery meat icons. Some waste space. The interface is like zoomed in. Just my personal opinion though.2

Don't get me wrong, PHP has evolved a lot, but the stuff people are building with it is just the biggest load of fucking shit I have ever seen: Shopware. Shopware is the most ass-sucking abomination to extend. It's nearly impossible to develop anything beyond "use the standard features and shut the fuck up" that is more sophisticated than a fucking calculator.
The architecture of this pile of crap is the worst bullshit ever. A mix of OOP, randomly making use of non OOP concepts and features together with the unnecessarily HUGE amount of useless interfaces and classes. Sometimes I feel like it's 90% fucking shitty boilerplate shit.
And don't get me started with TWIG. It's a nice thought, but WHY THE BLOODY FUCK WOULD YOU NOT USE VUE IF YOU ARE ALREADY USING IT FOR A DIFFERENT PART OF SHOPWARE. This makes no fucking sense whatsoever and makes development of new features a huge pain in the ass. I can't comprehend how people actually like using this shit.
OH AND THE DATABASE. OH MY FUCKING GOD. This one is bad. Ever tried to figure anything out in a database where random strings (yes MySQL "relational" - you might think) that are stored as text in a JSON format make up some object or relations during runtime?? Why the fuck do you have foreign and primary keys if you don't use them properly??
Seriously you can't even figure out which data belongs to what because the architecture just sucks fucking ass. FUCK YOU Shopware wankers, you suck, your product sucks, your support sucks, your architecture sucks and you keep releasing new versions that regularly break shit even in minor versions.

Got an idea that needed prototyping, remembered that people always said Bootstrap is a good UI framework for quick prototyping. Had a doubt though, as the last time I checked Bootstrap sucks.
I ended up wasting hours to make it work with webpack. Turned out it still sucks.
The most irritating thing was they tell people to install the latest beta, or even alpha version on their website, not the stable one. Who the fuck would do that?
When you do the bare `npm install bootstrap`, it will install the latest stable version, but the docs page defaults to the... guess what, the latest beta version. I wasted nearly an hour just to figure out why the styles weren't working like the examples in the docs.3 -

This information displays which seems to run Windows restarted. I would say that it happend because of the long uptime these machines have and Windows sucks with having long uptime.
Solution: Run it on a Linux based operating system instead.

I think that win devs that are scared of using a terminal are not real devs. We write structured instructions every day, a terminal is just the same. If they are scared of that they should try writing code with a mouse or devote themselves to artistic painting.

So i ranted about how bad the snapchat app was in terms of design and performance a few days ago here and at a couple of other places and the general conscience was that I should use it for a few days and i would like it.

I tried to use it every day to keep up with what others are doing and sometimes try to post but i really don't like his bad the app is. It doesn't make me want to use it. Its a battery hog. It fucking drinks through my battery like nobody's business. The v10 update made it a bit better but it still sucks.
I still don't like the UX design but I have come to hate it less. It still sucks though.
I still don't like that there isn't a proper way to discover people. The "discover" tab is just paid advertisement.5 -

Can there be a happy rant?
This is going to be a bit of a rambling semi coherent story here:
So this customer who just doesn't know what their data schema is or how they use it (they're a conglomeration of companies so maybe you get how that works out in a database). For every record there's like a ton of reference number type things mapped all over the DB to fit each companies needs needs.
To each company the data means something different, they use the data differently, and despite their claims otherwise, I think there are some logical conflicts in there regarding things like "This widget is owned by company A, division B, user C.". I'm also pretty sure different companies actually don't agree on who owns what... but when I show them they just sort of dance around what they've said in the past...
So I write a report (just an SQL query that outputs ... somewhere ... I mean what isn't that?) that tells them about all the things that happened given X, Y, Z.
Then every damn morning they'd get all up in arms about how some things are 'missing' but sometimes they don't know what or why because they've no clue what the underlying data actually is / their own people don't enter the data in a consistent way. (garbage in garbage out man...)
So I've struggled with this for a few weeks and been really frustrated. Every morning when I'm trying to do something else ... emails about how something isn't working / missing.
In the meantime I'm also frustrated by inquiries about "hey this is just a simple report right?" (to be clear folks asking that aren't being jerks, and they're not wrong ... it really should be simple)
Anyway my boss being the good guy he is offers to take it over, so I can do some things. Also sometimes it helps just to have someone else own something / not just look it over.
So a few days into this.... yup, emails coming in about things 'missing' or 'wrong' every day.
Like it sucks, but it's nice to see it suck for someone else too as validation. -

Change of technology. There's one time that the team can't decide what tech to use. So after 2 years of production suddenly we moved from Nodejs to Elixir for server side and MySql to Cassandra for database ... It is crazy that time...
So learning a new language it was so difficult as elixir is functional ... (And I was sucks back then) , and Cassandra is something new to me , which is difficult.

GitHub, your Copilot sucks, and so does Dependabot!
Dependabot opened 3 pull requests;
merging the first one caused conflicts in package.json and package-lock.json that must be resolved;
while trying to investigate further, the second pull request got closed as it suddenly seemed obsolete.
Dependabot: "Looks like these dependencies are no longer updatable, so this is no longer needed."
This kind of service generates so much noise and irrelevant alerts, it comes out of nowhere and there is no way to get rid of those bots once they invaded a repository. And they are so useless. A simple `npm outdated && npm upgrade` would have done better in 99% of the cases.

Excel is a powerful and extremely versatile application, but one thing that really SUCKS about it, is that formulas are language-specific! So if using Outlook in - for example - Swedish you can't write "IF(<expression>,<then>,<else>)" but instead "OM(<expression>;<then>;<else>)". Note the semi-colon instead of comma (because in Swedish comma is used as decimal). AAARGGH! This pisses me off!2

I wasted all of yesterday trying to create a business object in staging which can't be created with the admin panel instead of modifying an existing one to fit the case I was testing, because i forgot that this is staging and just assumed that existing objects are not to be touched.

Working on a platform with very few users and developers kinda sucks. There is only like 5 forums about this platform and it has less than one than a 1000 threads. Stack overflow has nothing on it so that sucks. I am trying to fix this weird bug and I cannot find anything to fix it. Guess I will call it a feature.1

Got a documentation from the customer. The first thing I saw was that the source code is in SourceSafe. Holy shit I was shocked when I saw that and immediately sent back a list of arguments why SourceSafe sucks and that we use git. Shortly after that the customer called me. The documentation is outdated they also use git. What a shock on Monday morning.1

Q: I'm using make as a simple task runner. `make build` instead of a longer build command etc. It sucks that I can't simply pass some params like `make build dev`, instead I have to pass them as variables: `make build tag=dev`.

So i'm on a mac and i need some linux goodness on the quick. But the screen resolution stays at 800x600px! On my high dpi screen it's so tiny i need a magnifying glass to do anything on the guest os. MySQL Workbench 32-bit requires Visual C++ 2013, but all I can find is VS 2015 and later. So you need to have a 64 bit computer now to develop on mySQL databases? Well that SUCKS! A lot of devs work on commodity hardware, i.e. somewhat dated, 32-bit computers. Most devs that I know, including myself, are not interested in the latest, flashiest, most expensive hardware.17

I started by creating generic 2d vector and trying to create dot product from it.
I didn’t wanted to do it in swift but wasted 2 days trying to do it in rust vs 1 hour in swift including 49 minutes of installing swift tools.

You can find almost anything on webshops like Amazon, but you can't buy almost anything. In many cases they don't ship outside the US and if they do it costs a fortune. In Europe the range of products is very limited in comparison to the US. If you do find the same items, they cost more than double the price compared to the US, and then they don't ship to my country anyway. And if they do, most of the times we have to pay VAT twice. It's FUCKING UNFAIR and OUTRAGEOUS that in AD2017 consumers have so different conditions depening on geographic location. It sucks to live in Europe when it comes to shopping, and it sucks even more to live in Åland Islands when it comes to shopping online.

Submenu Boards doesn't show in Firefox 45.5.0 when viewing a single issue. This is really frustrating as I can't move quickly between the sprint board and a specific issue. What also sucks about jira is that there is no way to report bugs like this (perhaps Atlassian sincerely believe that they never have any bugs in their products), leaving devrant as the only resort to let out steam ;)

I don't know much about how search engines works and all that stuffs. I started a Blogspot and tried the Google Console to index my web on Google. But it sucks. I get redirect errors. "Crawled- but not indexed.", "Discovered not crawled". I don't know shit. And every video is just a crap on YouTube. I tried several methods and sometimes I feel like giving up.6

And reasons do not sound good to tell - like team did not want me anymore, maybe too dificult project, I am not independent enough, too many fixes after code reviews. This sucks that I do not know how to fix those parts, I have tried. And about too dificult project - how can I do better on dificult projects, I am not sure. There are projects of similar dificulty in most companies. And if projects would be easy, then everyone does that and reward would be small.18

Currently working on a conversion of a tool we use to keep track of our working hours (like how much time did we spend on that task, that project etc.), because the old version of that language sucks ass and the database system sucks even more ass.
