My 80 year old very absent minded dad made a website, all by himself, using a two decades old book he got from the thrift store.
He's even hosting it himself on an old laptop running Debian, including a redirect to a beautiful nostalgic /~username/index.htm url (not gonna share the link, because his personal details are on there).
The whole site is incredibly carefully crafted, and I'm super proud of him.
Who cares if it's not a React app? The 14 kilobytes of HTML 4.0 markup load in 20-30ms, and it renders pretty much perfectly in every browser including Internet Explorer 4 and Edge.

Manager: “We need you to stay in the room and not go outside to make personal calls on your mobile.”
Me: “uhmm okaaaay...”
*I get a call* “Yeah, I called about making a doctor appointment....my symptoms? Ummmm...*lowers voice to say it but everyone still hears...totally embarrassing*
Same manager, later, at performance review: “We found it highly inappropriate for you to be talking about your personal medical issues on the phone in front of everyone in the office.”15 -
Tips for all the programmers out there:
- A programmer is not a PC repair man, just no one seems to remember about that
- Programming is thinking, not typing.
Counting starts from zero, not one.
- Even after completing a degree and courses and working on IT projects, learning never stops. If you want to stay competitive you should also work on personal projects that force you to use languages and software you never work with on the job.
- You don’t need serious math skills to be a developer. However, you’ll need basic algebra, logic, strong problem-solving skills, and most of all, patience.
- You don’t need a degree to be a developer - programming is like almost any profession: if you’re good at it, people will pay you for your skills, regardless of how you got there.
- Sleeping with a problem, can actually solve it.14 -
Just a personal thing (and no clue why) but I can't fucking stand it when people say www. in front of their domains.
Working as a Linux + support engineer, I get quite some calls where people have to give me the domain they're calling about.
"what's the domain if I may ask?"
"oh that's www.theirdomain.com!"
OH FOR FUCKS SAKE JUST SAY THE DOMAIN, WWW. IS *NOT* PART OF IT, IT'S JUST A FUCKING SUBDOMAIN 😤18 -
I wish not to have seen this... And they are using a personal lisence... :/
I mean, if you are using for commercial purpose, then fucking pay for it!3 -
When I'm at work, can't wait to go home and work on my personal projects.
When I'm home I cook, I eat then I'm too tired to do anything except watching Netflix on the couch.
Then I go to bed frustrated for not having actually done anything I really like.
Am I the only one?
Is there any escape from this?17 -
I really f*cking hate it when someone tells me they use PC and they look weirded out at me when I ask what operating system they use and say 'well I use PC so windows obviously' and then I'm like ' PC STANDS FOR PERSONAL COMPUTER NOT FOR F*CKING WINDOWS', man, can't stand those people15

So today I receive 23 emails on DMCA takedown notice from last year project (which is a personal project). I asked Github why they think it is violating their policy, they told me they receive tonnes of complaints from a company, they shared the chat and that's the ex-company that fired me.
Even the project is not related to them, they seem to want to "Cancel" me on Github. Bro this is Github, not Twitter! Cancel culture does not work here.
Some of my IoT projects they flag it In Github, which I believe my ex-company they don't do any IOT projects. How the fuck it is violating their so called "code nondisclosure"?24 -
Please tell me I'm not the only lazy bastard that spends all week dreaming of the weekend to finally work on some personal projects and when it finally arrives as soon as I launch the IDE my motivation goes down to -100 and I spend the rest of the day watching random videos on YouTube as always dreaming of the next weekend to finish that awesome idea I had 5 years ago...14
-
Creating a personal website:
Step 1: Have 20mins of inspiration.
Step 2: Spend a day writing css and js
Step 3: Realize it sucks because (ugly || bad responsive design || not enough content)
Step 4 Experience no inspiration what so ever for next week
Step 5: Repeat11 -
In this day and age, what's my fucking excuse for not using a vpn full-time on my phone as well (next to my laptop)?
I do way more personal stuff on my phone anyways and add to that that I've got access to at least three self managed VPN servers...
Yup, going full VPN from now on.29 -
The satisfaction/get rekt feeling when I do this.
When a client sends an email asking us to do something "ASAP" and end it with "thanks in advance!" while it's something that we have user guides for.
"Dear {client.name},
I'd like to point you to a tutorial we have about this on our online help desk: {tutorial.link}.
Have a great day!"
Ha, rekt!15 -
I was building a personal website and my friend oversaw it. He said “that looks cool, can I help?” I agreed, why couldn’t he help? Ten minutes in I asked him if he liked our 404 page. He said “what’s the link to the 404 page?” 🤦♂️ He’s not on the team no more.3

got a mail 10 minutes after I finished a 10h shift that my contract won't be refreshed after 4 years ripping my ass off for this fucked up organization. apparently not because of lack of competence but of personal reasons. that's what you get for not being a sheep and having an opinion. my (ex)boss didn't even have the balls to say it to my face.
fuck them! I don't need people like that around me - neither in my spare time nor at work - and I wish them all the worst.
happy holidays motherfuckers!5 -
My biggest personal challenges as a dev are these two:
1. I tend to work too much (by choice), which impacts my personal spare time heavily.
2. I tend to not let loose of a problem until it is solved. This often results in longer work hours or me not taking brakes...4 -
New dashboard for my personal project (Invoice & Quotation system) built with asp.net core C#. Backend not connected yet.12

Do you agree to this rule given by my company ?
"Employees are not allowed to create any sort of library for any language after or during working hours, whether for personal or company projects. As they might somehow expose companies code to the open-source world."
Personally, I created quite much (not that much) of library , I created for fun, today I was told to delete ALL , so those who use my package , Im sorry :(73 -
Who shares this struggle?
I have a 9-5 development job and I also have a personal web application I am building and plan to bring to production.
There are simply not enough hours in the day. I struggle to find enough time to work on my personal project while still performing well at the 9-5 and spending some time with my family so I'm not absent.
Agh I wish I could pause time for productivity 😂29 -
Everyday single day I have to give time for family, personal work and office. Prioritized in that order.
End result : low quality family time, pending personal projects. Office work - well that one is OK I guess cos the time is dedicated.
Solution : made a deal with wife - one day on weekend dedicated for family (she can plan anything she wants) and I will not do any work. Other day dedicated for my personal work/time (no family plans).
Divide weekdays similarly. On family days I checkout at sharp 4pm from office and come home straight spend the rest of the day with family alone. On the other days I stay either at office or go somewhere to work or hangout with dev buddies.
*Wife agrees*
End result: Quality family time. No interruption when coding (a dev would understand the importance of this). More productive work.6 -
I managed to take down an entire school network with one VPN.
In short, I ran a personal VPN and eventually the System Administrators at my old school managed to pick it up as unknown traffic. For some reason, they managed to block the port but not the IP so I changed the port to 443 and their automatic system blocked port 443 on their entire network essentially rendering HTTPS useless for a few hours.
I never got approached about it but my school invested in a new IT team.3 -
9:30 - College
10:00 - Heard we got to build a fucking portfolio website in WordPress.
10:02 - Said I already had a personal portfolio
10:03 - Heard I still have to build a fucking WordPress portfolio website..
11:20 - Remembered I put on my portfolio that I don't want to fucking use WordPress!!!!!
Now - I live in pain. Building a WP site so I do NOT have to do it later :/11 -
Advice to all new programmers, take this one from personal experience. DO NOT PUT SWEAR WORDS IN DEBUG STATEMENTS.
You will miss one, it will go to production and it will get picked up by your log monitoring...2 -
"We make sure not to discriminate in our hiring process"
"Now please, trust us with your crucial personal details like sexuality, religion and what colour you are"13 -
So, plans for 1.916496 years?
- Dominate Vue.js
- Finish 2 personal projects
- Buy my gaming rig
- Buy my track day car
- Remortgage current flat
- Expand my agency
- Work less
- Rant less
Not exactly in that order.3 -
It's a satisfying moment when you actually get work done on a personal project. It's comforting knowing I am capable of not being a lazy shit all the time. Gotta keep this up.1
-
I think im sick. Not because my whole body hurts, my nose is running and i cant even move, but because i just had the idea that i should unit test my personal project.4

Amazon: you're logged into 53 devices.
Me: ooooh Kay, since when do I have that many devices. let's sign out of em all and change the password for some piece of mind.
Spongebob: * a few hours past *
Spam email: someone in the US has logged into your account - click here to verify through some random URL that doesn't even contain "Amazon" in it 🥳
-
I suddenly have that feeling Amazon sells you're account setting changes and not just your personal details.3 -
Remember when a phone was marketed as a phone and not a camera or some personal secretary?
Pepperidge farm remembers...
But seriously can we just get a phone marketed to people as a phone?
Like people in ads for the pixel 2 ask "so it's a phone?" and the s9's whole marketing thing was camera, camera, camera!
Really shits me up the wall when companies do shit like that for tech -,-21 -
So this bloody hilarious, I submit my PWA to windows store, mainly for shits and giggles, see how the whole thing works and all that.
App gets approved, I go in and run another submission to upload a few extra screenshots, at this point they block it as I do not have a privacy policy, but accept user authentication, which is not the case, so after a few days of back and forth I ask them to attach a screenshot, so turns out I need a privacy policy as when the users click on the map link which opens Google Maps in a NEW window, has a sing in button.
According to them, this is 'Opening within my application" and I am apparently able to access user details via google own sign in link, not SSO.
So as a joke, after some frustration I wrote up a privacy policy, what is an even bigger joke is that they accepted it…
This exists solely for the benefit of Microsoft who are having trouble comprehending the fact that RTMS Events does NOT have Authentication.
Microsoft believes that as the application uses Google Maps, and when Google Maps opens a “Sign In” button appears, that I am able to access your personal information.
As any reasonable person will understand, that is not the case, logging into Google Maps/Google for the benefit of using Google Maps in NO WAY gives anyone else access to your personal information.
So to be clear, I do not have any interest or access of any kind to your personal information, should you have any concerns about your privacy, remember, that the “Sign In” button is for Google, not RTMS, take up any issues with them, I am pretty sure they have a REAL and actually NECESSARY privacy policy.
http://rtms.events/privacy.html3 -
Idea was to make a little helper utility to be used once (only for myself, not client). But, I've kept adding layers of functionality over layers of functionality ... Long story short - this monstrosity (UI is bad, code not that much) was used for 10+ years (again, only by myself).
Finally, personal embarrassment was too big, so I took wooden stake and monster passed away. All related files deleted (but not before one final screenshot).6 -
Backend colleague : the API is online. It's tested and working, you can start the dev.
Me trying to manually call the API with all the fields pre validated : "error : invalid fields"
EVERY. FUCKING. TIME !
To all the backend developers : we are NOT your personal testers, and we are NOT supposed to clean your mess because you're too lazy to FUCKING TEST THE HAPPY PATH!!!
Thank you for your consideration.5 -
Called in on a Saturday... I’d rather have my underwear ride up for the rest of my life than having to deal with your bitch ass not knowing how to run a FUCKING computer.
No, I promise it’s working fine you dense fuck. You just don’t know how to fucking run it. Perhaps instead of calling me in, why not ask your other coworkers how to preform the task that you’re failing to learn.
And the shit thing is, I’ve explained this so many fucking times. It’s not my fault you won’t retain the mother fucking information you cheeky bastard.
STOP FUCKING CALLING ME! - who the fuck even gave you my personal number you fuck!5 -
Joined a call during a potentially important life event. Work laptop password expired this morning, personal laptop didn't connect to vpn, desktop not connecting to vpn. No one knew what's wrong on the call (just that it's not working).
Not a good call.1 -
Just because a developer is a programming wizard does not mean we are physical hardware installation wizards as well.
I hate when people ask me to setup their personal home systems; especially networked printers.3 -
I saw an article saying, What Programming Language Should I Learn First? 2017
It suggested, JavaScript!
😏 hmmm....
What do you think, yes or no?
(And no this is not personal question, just an article I was reading 😃)22 -
Tonight is my school's prom and I'm the only one of my friends that's not going. My original date cancelled on me and the other one ended up getting a boyfriend and cancelled too. Oh well.
(Am I capable of posting about something other than my personal life? Holy fuck I don't have many posts that aren't about my personal shit)8 -
Pulled this from a web site's privacy policy. Remember, just because there's a switch doesn't mean anyone has to abide to that rule.
Browser “Do Not Track” Signals: Most browsers contain a “do-not-track” setting. In general, when a “do-not-track” setting is active, the user’s browser notifies other websites that the user does not want their personal information and online behavior to be tracked and used, for example, for behavioral advertising. As required by recent Shine the Light law amendments we are required to inform you that, as is the case with most websites, we do not honor or alter our behavior when a user to one of our Websites has activated the “do-not-track” setting on his/her browser.5 -
Working for a company where the coworkers working 24/7 and the boss (ceo) expect me to do the same, even working on weekends.
But when i mentioned I have life distinctly personal and working life. But no, boss wouldn’t care much about my life anyway.
I got call names for being a not team player, not committed much , a thief (“ I paid you money but you didn’t work 24/7”) and they even claimed I don’t have heart to work.
It affect my personal so much that I can’t be happy even on the weekends. I got perturbed sleeps. Keep thinking of working .
Obviously they played well on guilt tripping me.8 -
Is this some properly fucked up interpretation of GDPR or what??!
We must capture your personal information, for no reason other than to prove we're not abusing your personal information??2 -
This is my current dev/personal desktop, im not humble, im just poor! I just need to finish my studies so I can get a job!11

I'm going through job applications from technical point of view in our company.
A guy applied for 4th time already and in the field "Webpage or LinkedIn profile" he always puts: linkedin.com/feed.
How can I take him serious as a developer if he doesn't know that /feed is not his personal page.4 -
Worst part about the people I know IRL knowing I’m a white hat Hacker - “Hey, so and so was taking shit I need you to hack their Facebook.”
*rolls eyes* I’m not your personal keyboard warrior nor do I give a shit who said what. Take care of it yourself. You’re an adult. -

Excerpts from "Bastard devops from hell" checklist:
- Insistently pronounce git with a soft "G" and refuse to understand people not using that pronunciation, the same goes for jithub, jitlab, jit lfs, jitkraken etc.
- Reject all pull requests not in haiku format, suggest the author needs to be more culturally open minded when offending.
- increment version numbers ONLY based on percentage code changed: Less than 1% patch increment, less than 5% minor increment, more than that major version increment.
- Cycle ALL access keys, personal tokens, connection strings etc. every month "for security reasons"
- invent and only allow usage of your own CI/CD language, for maximum reuse of course. Resist any changes to it after first draft release23 -
So this guy is asking for help but his ego is too high. What happened was his code raised a ""Trying to get property 'result' of non-object"" error so I told him that the data type is not declared. He still not get it. Like in personal message he asked me wether I know php because he is the founder of some cloud service in php, and I know all about php.
I was like if you know php so well, why cant you realise that $result is not declared?4 -
One shitty thing about working in a Japanese company is that they make you write personal goals/targets (目標). These goals they expect you to achieve don't actually relate to your work most of the time and it's not about personal growth, but more about what you did to improve the company.
Another thing is their expectations that you can achieve all this within a year on top of your work is kind of unrealistic. Plus even if you achieve such goals, it does not equate to good performance review and/or salary increases.8 -
Today boss called me on my personal phone to ask where the fuck I am after not answering a low prio mail for 10 minutes from his pet project.
We have voip.
We have chat.
No pressure meant...2 -
One of the most hated things by me in my entire Internet using experience is guys who comment on blogs and forums saying "Pls send me help/full code for this: my email is X and my number is Y"
Grow up guys. The admin is not your slave to send you personal help on an email.
It's so damn embarrassing I'm starting to hate my nationality.2 -
When you forgot to remove this personal Toast in android code and publish the code to production
Next day around 100 people were confused what does this message means because it's written in English but not an English word.
BTW it means "It's closed" :)4 -
Tell me what tilts you the most when you are talking to a recruiter or HR personal. I will start;
Them implying that money should not be important when I am changing jobs- so I can accept their lowball offer.
STFU biatch, I am good at this profession, of course I will go to higher salary or higher comfort or a combination of both. I am not running a charity here!5 -
Made caffeine consumption personal record today. 11 cups of coffee (11*250ml = 2750ml). In each 250ml there's around 100mg of caffeine. 1100mg of caffeine in one day. Huh. Not bad. Yes, I am still alive and I feel so good.20

I like, that many code hosting sites are shutting down (Google Code, Codeplex). This does not mean those sites are bad.
The ones I like and use are GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket (and most personal ones like Gogs or GitLab CE).
Here is my list of the sites I don't like:
- Sourceforge
- SF
- sf.net
- sourceforge.net8 -
Look here sir. If I have raised 12 defects on the feature you were working on its not a personal attack... I am not trying to publicly humilate you or doubting your ninja coding skills. We are on the same team. Just trying to make a better product that's my job as qa. So chill out with passive aggressive comments on the tickets.
You don't hear me making a peep when you take my name and say I missed the issue if someone higher up points out the same defects.1 -
I classify myself as Michael Jackson, and my personal pronoun is hee hee.
Saw that the other day and could not stop laughing. -
Minimal comments, no tests, push to Master branch... *Cough* though, this is all for personal projects, not team projects.2

Another small story about my "teacher".
Today we got told again that we need to develop a personal programming style. I asked him how we were supposed to do that while being restricted by his demands. He tried to justify this with bullshit about how to not declare variables. As i told him that wasn't my point at all he stuttered and couldn't say anything. I got officially allowed to use everything i want! VICTORY SCREECH
(But restricting students on which commands they are allowed to use is still bullshit imho)5 -
Personal pet peeve.
I'm not a germophobe. But if your hands spend most of their time down your pants, or you've been eating food with them, or they're just generally disgusting, please wash before thinking of using my computer.
There is nothing I hate more than finding crusty fingerprints on my keyboard and mouse.
And if you're using my computer I likely know where you live. 🔪🔪2 -
Several actually
- root DB access on production
- git commit -am "Stuff" (message)
- Not doing backups
- Using personal licensed software for company work
- 1 commit per day or weekend
- Taking work to home1 -
I am so bad at web designing (and hate it) that every time I start a personal project, 90% of the time that the project is not finished is because of designing. Of that fucking CSS.6
-
I had this a while ago. Started a new project at my study (Application Development) and started working on the documentation. After rewriting parts of the documents for nine weeks (10 weeks for every project where I study) because they were not approved by my teacher because they didn't fit her 'personal preference/style', she even had the guts to tell me that I am a bad programmer because the application was even less than half complete. She only gave me one week to create the application that normally takes at least five weeks.5

The 'i am a total noob' feeling is real fiah like a mix tape right now. last week on a personal project i had the problem of placing a div within a div and the buttons not being clickable. i fixed it by fixing the positions of the elements. today the same thing but will a scrolling div and f*ck me right i just had to forget the solution. now i have been stuck for hours trying to figure out the right way and fooling around with no solution. learn your fundamentals.4
-
When all you hear are mouse clicks and not keyboard presses from your colleagues, you know it's going to be a slow day. Which means, time to work on personal projects :P2
-
Not only are you not your job, your job is not worth taking home with you; unless it's actually your company, leave it in the office. You can love your job and still have days when you hate it, or days when you'd rather be doing anything else; that doesn't mean you don't still like what you do.
As a profession we can all be obsessive and not take the time out that we need, so make special effort to do so, even if that just means you're working on a personal project instead. Your brain, and partner, will be glad that you did. Whether you like to admit it or not, everyone needs downtime.1 -

Again, someone I know got married after having a relationship for 2 3 years.
I am 26, soon to be 27. I never ever had a good relationship. All I have his crap and crap stories. In my country girls get married around 28 maximum.
Arrange marriages are way to go here. But do not want to have that fuss. In lockdown no chance of meeting someone.
Not achieving anything in my job, no realistic progres in my personal life. I think I am heading towards a big mess.65 -

from time to time i find it hard to organize my personal life. it appears that i forget stuff that does not seem important to me or just not interested in.
apart from my full time job i own a small business and try to maintain a more or less social life (as social as i can get with my dev background).
can you recommend any tools that you use to keep everything in line?12 -
Looking over a clients website to see what they paid for from the guy the previously paid thousands of dollars for.
End up with a personal dilemma of whether or not to let them know all they did was charge them a few thousand to host their Wordpress website on a godaddy server and it's just a generic theme not even customized for the client.10 -

I've had a personal project (commercial idea) I've been meaning to get started on for a while, and today I started...
Kudos to the team at Microsoft, they've really gotten .net core and asp.net core to a fantastic place.
And the team at JetBrains have done an amazing job on Rider.
I've been able to get a docker container running SQL Server on linux, as well as Web API projects for an API and an identity server all running with local HTTPS and communicating quite happily, with barely an issue in sight.
Bodes well for the future I hope.
Now I just have to commit to the project and actually finish it 😂1 -
Not only coding, but studying Computer Science has changed a lot in my life. For example, learning about CPU scheduling algorithms made me manage time for my personal tasks a lot better. Earlier I used to waste a lot of time by doing tasks in out of sync order. Also coding made me realize how dumb most people are!3

How do you handle narcissist managers?
Who look at you not as human beeing but as a thing to exploit for personal gain? Sure there's the business side (capitalism) but the human side of it bothers me.5 -
currently having one. the new company gave an offer letter even though my notice period is 60 days , but things went downhill from there.
during these 60 days whenever i got a mail from new company, i acted upon it, and u was expecting things to go smoothly. they use some sap software for getting onboarding info.
today, on my joining date, am getting to know that i have not yet submitted some personal and legal details, so i cannot join today :/
why had i not submitted them? i had told them 7 days ago that there's some issue with the software as its not showing the section for uploading anything on my profile, but they ignored that. and today they are sending me an instruction pdf with super outdated images :///1 -
Marketing Director uses the website's blog as his personal social media platform and posts weird one-liners which should have been social media posts.
Refuses to acknowledge content quality is a problem and insists I make the SEO better by doing some stuff with the code.
I can do what I can, technically speaking, but your poor quality content will still drag the entire thing down, asshole.
A blog is not a social media platform, dude.2 -
I think I might get close to a burnout. Last week was extremely stressful because of a deadline and I worked 45 hours in 4 days. Even in the evening my heart is pounding like a coke addict who had his last nose 1 hour ago.
What is your personal way of dealing with (work related) stress?
What activities help you best to cool down and relax?
I've not yet tried meditation but am trying to take some time to regularly do sport after the work, hopefully it helps.6 -
Not being motivated enough to work on or finish personal projects.
Apparently, easier said, than done when you have a full-time Dev job.1 -
Started a small personal Android project after 1 year of not coding android.
Create project -> hmm -> should i... try kotlin -> install plugin -> new project. This thing seems to have a much clear syntax, unexpected.3 -
I really invested into this work from home lifestyle, moving in an appartment where i could have my own office, upgrading my personal workstation, leaving overpriced locations close to subways behind.. so i do hope it will remain like this for at least a few more years (or why not, even forever for dev roles)
It's way better than a shitty office placed in location equally incomfortable for everyone
Otherwise.. well, there is always the option to go freelancing from home3 -
Just finished a large write up on a security flaw I found and disclosed in an exam spyware vendor's "zero knowledge encryption" - derived keys that were generated from incrementing integers, discussion on obfuscation and more.
It was a hell of a time writing this up; not sure if linking my personal blog here would be bad practice, but here it is: https://proctor.ninja/wave-rake-pro...
It's been something else, but hopefully I can keep fighting against tech like this on school campuses.4 -

Bullshit. You're not using my personal information for customer service, otherwise your call center wouldn't suck so badly.3 -
Material Design on the web was not a good experience in my personal opinion. I see these spaces around the boxes that are too huge. The faded underlined input boxes are confusing, too. I'd rather prefer seeing a border all around the input box or something of similar representation than an underline with a distracting animation. Many also fail at placing the buttons with a transparent background on the right spot. I'd still prefer Semantic UI or something clean on my upcoming projects. To me, Material Design is really good for mobile interfaces though.5

Not a co-worker but a personal friend, I am still developing with the dude. He is absolutely AMAZING when it comes to reverse engineering he knows much more than me in this area of computer science. Actually one of my first friends who actually geeks out over this shit.10

I used to have a friend who swore that his dad worked with a gubernamental hacking agency. One day we started talking about my personal programming projects and he asked why I wouldn't say that I was a hacker and not a programmer, he believed that calling yourself a hacker was better. I explained to him that a hacker was not the same as a programmer or as a developer. We got into an argument and then I realized that if his dad truly worked in a hacking agency, he would know the difference *facepalm*9

Well, today was a fun day playing with Qubes OS. I really did nothing really difficult, I created a template for multimedia pruposes (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify and VLC) based on debian and then create a domain based on that same template.
It works
Still need to fix the screen tearing, but it is nothing really serious, in fact I probably just change the graphic card to the integrated on the motherboard to see if something change.
Probably the next issue will be set a few domains for specific issues:
- Dev [personal]: This will be used for my personal projects.

However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
Hiring a third party to help us with something...
Third party: yeah okay, we know what we need. Can we get access to your git repo
Me: sure, I'll make sure you'll get it
(To the admins): hey can you get them access to our git server?
Admins: did they sign the personal data processing contract?
Me: oh they won't work with any personal data. It's a dev server and they only need access to the source code. And the usual contracts and NDAs are already done
Admins: well we still need the other one.
... Sure. Why not. Just delays the start of the process for... Like a week and a half until that useless bit of paper has passed through all the necessary departments. Not like time's an issue. Right?8 -
So I am for sure not the best web developer but I have been working on a personal project for over a year now.
Teaching everything myself I somehow got to a pretty oldschool, stack I still use: PHP, HTML5, JS with Jquery, ...
Should I feel bad about that? I somehow can't bring myself to learning something else because at this time I can do everything I want to do with my simple setup. Am I missing out on something big?7 -
I'm not a developer by profession and my home setup is always messy (where I develop personal projects) but I am an intern sysadmin so here is my office desk :) wanted to join the whole show your desk movement
Pardon me if the tags are not right. Im fairly new and mostly a reader.1 -
Steps to becoming one with your code:
1.Get red lamps and make em trippy asf.
2.Syntax color the shit out of your editor.
3.Install activate-power-mode
4.Get high or tipsy
5.Listen to surround psytrance
6.Code
Congratulations you are now in a higher level of existence. You are one with your code and your will is root.

I'm usually very careful with *everything* except today, I spilled half my water bottle on my personal laptop which I was using for interview prepping and while I had no plans to buy a new computer for the time being (not by choice lol). Here's a photo of my 5 year old boy.10

Just met a startup that has a programmer intern but no IT supervisor. I felt so sorry for her that I decided to show her a few cool tools that she can use in her work.
She was still using Xampp, Google Chrome, command prompt and paper trails (for all of the passwords she had to manage to different accounts)
Shown her how to use Docker, Git Bash and WSL, FireFox Developer Edition, VS Code (if she decides to not use that unregistered Sublime Text editor) and LastPass (personal preference).
Best of luck!2 -

Can any regular job make a person happy? No matter what the pay or content of the job is, I get bored easily and disappointed at myself.
I have more fire inside me when I am doing personal projects but am not entrepreneur myself either.9 -
Update on me is that I am trying to do a DevOps Master's while trying to find a way to go to Canada for personal reasons - will not elaborate further on the latter.8

Why is the internet such a toxic place... You voice your personal opinion and instantly have people who believe they are 'better' than you call you a stupid consumer because they use something that others may not care for.
Fuck me people, why can't we just have opinions and respect each other, it's not that fucking hard!7 -

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
I have found a website that allows HTML in comments. They blocked <script>, but not <iframe>. I can just load a script from my personal website using it. What should i do?

I really like to use PHP. It's not so interesting language as C# is, but I like it. But every now and them I read someone complaining about PHP.
So let's go: as PHP is not an exactly good language to backend, what would be a good one to use with my personal projects?
Thanks!17 -
Never had a coding style argument because my workplace doesn't have any standards, mix of C# and VB sure why not, 2K line VB service with 6 comments total? Sure no problems there.
The only styling we have is our personal preferences, except when it's my projects, then every adheres to the styles I set because I won't merge their 800 line monstrosity of a file with 18 classes.9 -

Dear Devranters, since recruiters love personal websites (and I'm looking for work), I spent the last two days making my own personal site using all the tools I know, including some 3d modeling of the stack I know
DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN SITES? can you share so I can compare? thanks.
site is here https://bransongitomeh.github.io and I'm attaching the 3D render of my stack done in blender and rendered using cycles
the site itself is done in HTML and CSS is using some paid bootstrap template and I put it all together using https://github.com/BransonGitomeh/... so its minified and stripped down (could do more) and it's cute I think.
I'm not sure if recruiters care if I should use react and vue and angular, lol. I figured I should use the right tool for the Job.
what do you think?39 -
Gotta make a decision matrix like the one in the picture. It's for a recommendation report concerning whether or not to distribute laptops to the CSCE students at my university and what kind of laptop if so.
I need help determining the weights for my matrix, because my personal preferences may not reflect the majority. As a programmer, how would you weigh the following three (very broad) categories?
Power(CPU, GPU, memory, HDD, I/O, etc..)
Quality (Durability, material, aesthetics, etc..)
Comfort(Weight, size, shape, keyboard, screen-eye comfort, OS familiarity, etc..)
Please write an integer 1-10 in the following format:
Power/Quality/Comfort ex: 7/4/9
Thanks, everyone!

I have this urge to get better at coding and software architecture and design. But fuck me if I'm not lazy about it.
All these crazy good books and lectures and here I am, doing jackshit to improve. Can't even finish my own personal projects. Bah.
I know how I'm supposed to go about it, how to keep engaged in a cycle of personal betterment. I lack self-discipline to do it though... Tried meditation for a time, but haven't really stuck to it. Currently trying to follow stoics (Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and some others), but the mindset is not so easy to adopt, and the practical philosophies even harder.
Oh well. Life is hard. Blah-blah-blah. Thanks for reading. Just wanted to vent, really.8 -
Continued rant of : https://devrant.com/rants/1152021
Ok, I am using this program again, this time with 43 programs (i guess), and it saves me at least 30 minutes.
Some were interested how I made it, well, another person (who is not in devrant) helped me (and he is not from stackoverflow) make it.
You can see how it works (the frontend) by looking at the image below.
I am afraid that I can't release the source now, and maybe not soon because of personal reasons.
Back to the point, I found a massive bug there, you can see "Finding uninstaller" in the middle of the two, and I can't fix it, so I shall just leave it alone.
It is Saturday now or Sunday I guess, take a good rest, and get back to work in Monday! (or school for students) -
I haven't said anything yet, but an AltRant notification server exists. Support for it will arrive very very soon on the AltRant app. It will run locally on the end user's personal computer, and it does not require a constant connection to the phone. Both devices need to be connected to the same local network on first connection, but after that you can wander out of your house or disconnect from the local network and still receive notifications.
DISCLAIMER: ALL SENSITIVE USER CREDENTIALS ARE NOT STORED *ANYWHERE* EXCEPT ON THE LOCAL USER'S MACHINE. NO DATA IS SENT TO ME. THE SERVER IS OPEN-SOURCE, HAS NO RELEASE BINARIES AND RUNS ON PYTHON.
Note to @dfox: if you want this to not exist or not be supported inside AltRant, please tell me or send me an email about it.2 -
What is it about robot collected data that makes researchers so anal? Like, dude, it's not even personal data. It's literally robot's joint motor recordings. It's not nuclear data, so why the fuck do you protect it like your life and your country depend on it?
I hope you get fisted by that data every night and how it will end up in oblivion sooner because you didn't publish it. You asshole.8 -
How do you feel with not having motivation to work on/finish your personal projects?
I'm working 9 to 5 plus commute and at the end of the day I just want to eat some food and chill. But I keep beating myself up over not working on things that will improve myself.

After moving desks, ending up next to your manager.
The manager is there when you arrive at work, and is still there when you leave. He never seems to leave his desk, not even for lunch, except for the occasional meeting.
We never see him do anything other than work, but sometimes he joins in on personal conversations with other colleagues, which usually ends the conversation rather quickly.1 -
An incomplete list of 2018 personal dev goals:
* do more web development (It's fun. In a crude way.)
* finish the smart lamp I started building in 2016 ...
* fix up more electronic devices while learning their inner workings
* learn Python and some other language
* get myself a blog again
* get that testautomation thing which is haunting me in my dreams already to production
* be more relaxed
* do some home automation while not cursing all that much -
to whomever it may concern...

Guys,
I'm looking for a (second) VPS provider and stumbled upon one called SSDNodes. They have a 8GB RAM offer for $120/yr. Which sounds far better than the popular choices like DigitalOcean, Vultr, etc.
But the only reviews I can find about them are from their blog or some unknown websites.
Has anyone used them or heard about them? Also, any alternative suggestions? I'm going to be using it for Docker powered personal web projects. Not expecting a lot of users.6 -
I come from an older generation where we didn't mention personal lives or politics at work. I can be productive and befriend people that are opposites of me politically, as a matter of fact I kind of like it. My complaint is when tech companies as a whole broadcast their views. They have every right to but does it make good business sense? I am also not comfortable with people broadcasting personal details about their personal lifestyle in a professional setting. I like to be lifestyle and political neutral in business.6

If you have any project (personal or not, doesn't matter) that does not have proper code comments and documentation and you don't want to make one because of the effort (maybe even "wasted" effort), think again. When commenting on a wall of code to say what it does, you may find a better way of doing what you have to do, possibly increasing performance, or improving security.
I have been able to do better input sanitization for a method on a personal project of mine because of this.
Don't use the amount of effort for proper documentation as an excuse not to make one.2 -
So my manager mentioned off hand that we might look at updating our company website to look a little more modern...

Question: What do you guys do when you are not working? Do you have personal projects? Do you teach yourself new stuff?8
-
Personal Opinion:
If you/your company's goal is to achieve micro-services, kubernetes or any new shiny technology, then you are thinking it wrong.
These tools are a means to an end. They should be a solution to an issue you are facing/will certainly face. They should not be your end goal.5 -
Do you use personal assistants for home automation? If yes, what's your setup?
I'm thinking about setting up a RPi/similar with Jasper and bundling it up with Home Assistant, however, I'm not sure about the audio hardware yet.3 -
Finish a personal project.
Any personal project. I'm not picky. The last time I completed a project that wasn't for my job was like five (well, now six) years ago. -
Why can't people pick up on the subtle cues that you are busy? If I am intently looking at my monitors then I am fucking busy! This is not the time to engage in a personal convo. Recruiter for a well known company somehow finds my personal email, no biggie - it's not the first time they've contacted me. I decide to give it a shot, phone interview is scheduled, they're a no show. Email them 10 after, they want to reschedule, I do a reschedule. Again, no show. Yeah, it's like that... I haven't even heard back now. Seriously, how do these people even hold jobs?

I regret not finishing all the personal projects I started. Then I would have had at least something I could have put on my CV and gotten a job earlier than at 23.

The problem with Windows Store apps is that they are not uniform. They are all layed out differently from each other. Their navigation sucks. They use too much mystery meat icons. Some waste space. The interface is like zoomed in. Just my personal opinion though.2

I work with a guy who is genius in his field, but doesn't have much ability outside of it, his view is we should all know what he knows and not bother him with bugs in his code we should fix the issues ourselves. Oh how the shoe was on the other foot when he needed help with a personal app.4

!rant (kinda)
So I'm currently working on a personal project, where the concept is something, that if I wanted to, I could probably make a decent penny off of it.
The plan is to make it open source, and not charge anything for it, and when I tell this to non-dev people, they're almost shocked! Why would I not take an opportunity to make a lot of money!?
Well basically I think it's awesome to have open-source software, and I really want to "contribute to the society". And only after like 10 minutes, people start understanding my point, to just help people make something new, instead of being a greedy person, and keep it private, making it unavailable for a lot of people.
Hopefully I'm not the only one with this mindset?5 -
Here is a personal project I've been working on lately. It's not public, but just wanted to share. It's a custom chatbot I created using a LAMP stack. Its built on top of a framework called Program-O to handle the knowledgebase storage and processing along with some basic NLP. I added the web speech api functionality myself so it supports recognition as well as speech synthesis. Anyways, pretty proud of this one.7

Wanted to write a personal rant but fuck it, that shit that I wrote is too cheesy. Let me just say: I hate myself for not being able to work as a fucking human being. `alias pull="find . -name .git -print -execdir git pull \;"`
A while ago, I found someone asking about personal favorite aliases. I cannot find it now.
I am not a huge terminal user so I don't really care about keeping aliases until now.
It became annoying to `git pull` before doing anything when you are using two different machines regularly and there are always about a dozen active repos.2 -
Just tried out Jupyter Notebook for the first time. I can see why software engineers wouldn't like notebooks, especially if you intend to actually publish the notebook as code for other people to use (please publish a module that can be imported, not a notebook that has to be hacked to pieces to make it reusable), but it's pretty handy for early prototyping or documentation.
I'm playing around with save-editing for a few GBA games as a personal project, and I used a Notebook to document the save file format with examples.3 -
Why isn't Vue.js more popular? (it's not rhetoric, I actually don't know)
During the last weeks I've been learning the basics of the more popular JS frameworks and from the ones I saw, Vue seemed like the best option (lightweight, virtual DOM, simple documentation, alternative to React Native). Nonetheless, React & Angular are more widely used by companies and personal projects. Does anyone know why that is?1 -
Having an eye for detail and being annoyed by slight imperfections is extremely annoying at some times.
Yesterday I spent the evening setting up elementary os on my private laptop and I wanted to start coding a new personal project after setting up my IDE.
I ended up spending the evening trying to fix the font of my ZSH terminal which annoyed me so much but was absolutely not blocking any progress. Moral of the story: sometimes you just gotta let go2 -

This is not an ad!
But if anyone is in a need for a decent java profiler - here's yourkit's festive deal: https://www.yourkit.com/purchase/ (Personal)
You can legally use this licence for both personal and commercial needs. It's non-expiring. You can have up to 3 profiler copies simultaneously (deactivate one to activate another if all 3 slots are used)
I just thought some of you might find this useful. Since I'm a performance engineer I grabbed this deal as if it was the last one in the shelf :) The tool is good, the price is decent and it's for lifetime.
Again, it's not an ad. I don't care if you purchase it or not. I just thought I've come across smth nice and felt like sharing.2 -

I've been reticent to chime in on this weeks group rant, feels too personal...but it is what is is.
Most emotional was losing a dev to cancer, and an analyst to an allergy, and an engineer to an accident...ugh.
Most intense was probably losing servers and hard drives without recovery, not being able to get databases back online because they went down so bad, websites being down, not meeting some quarterly goal, shit not building, email campaigns that go sideways...fuck...anything involving reactionary leadership...unrealistic expectations.
But all that shit, while seemingly important or "stressful", pales in comparison to someone you fought with in the trenches not being there anymore.

Hey folks, I want to start actually completing personal projects (that I'm proud of so I don't resort to showcasing homework bleh). I find that I get too ambitious and perfectionist in my ways that I wind up never completing projects.
Anyone have any advice or tips on how to overcome that? This might be a vague ask, but I want to do enough that it demonstrates an understanding of a framework/language but also is doable in a reasonable timeframe. Any personal anecdotes?3 -

Why project manager use group chat to discuss an issue which is related only to one developer, meanwhile other getting messages and notifications which they have no idea and putting their attention something they have no business?
Sometime I did not read message cause I think they are not related to me then I get personal message please check group.
Now other team members are using group chat when they want to discuss something with manager.
Why you people think scope of message before send it???1 -

Continuing my saga, I'm now tasked with creating a .NET Web Form app and then converting it to ASP.NET Core as a proof of concept.
Problems:
- Web Forms are not supported in Core and are not planned to
- After 3 weeks I still do not have a work laptop
-- My personal laptop is a Chrome book running Linux
--- I can't install VS2017 on my laptop, I need it for this project.
- Working from home, where I have the resources available, is apparently against company policy (I'm not 100% on this yet, can't find it myself)
- I'm likely going to be sent back to the offline computer lab at a different location to work on this, where I doubt the programs/packages are installed
Perfect.4 -

I learned this as we've both become good friends, and were on the topic personally and informally. Our salaries are not publically known outside of personal disclosure. My manager / HR is not aware that I know this. How do I bridge this with my employer?3

Bugs are good in code. It shows that you're Human. You make mistakes. And you're willing to correct them.
But when they're someone else's bugs in a piece of code they didn't give a flying fuck about documentation, bugs can tick one off. The bigger the project, the better the documentation needs to be. And I'm not taking about java docs. Put proper comments in your code. Especially when it's not a personal project and you fully intend to leave the company. -
I’m making a cut-down version of scratch for a personal project and I just fucking had to write a linker for it.

It’s like, maybe 10 total lines. So not a real linker. But still. Just a bit crazy.2 -
Work/life balance doesn’t exist!
I have no personal life outside what I do. My creative expression. It heavily influences my every decision and makes up who I am, and it is not possible to draw the line where my creativity ends and my personal life with my partner, friends and stuff begins. Coincidentally, it is also my “job”.
The day my creativity stops will mark the end of what makes my life meaningful.6 -
Hi everyone... Great to be back but not feeling so great. I keep feeling... "tired", "bored", like everything I do has no fucking meaning. Like I lost all of that fun I had when I was making my own projects. I get home at 6PM from work and it feels like time passes by so fast. I can't even muster up the enthusiasm to start my own personal projects.
What do you do when you feel like this? How can I get back my enthusiasm?8 -
I'm at work but not working, at all!
Planning was done very badly, my team finished in a very effective and efficient way, even before the timeline(including tests and all other things).
It's been a month(or so) since I'm not doing anything, the start was cool, I know most of you are gonna say you envy this, believe me, I'm not, I feel useless and the sense I could be fired at anytime increases everyday (my personal paranoia).
What would Brian Boitano do?4 -
I always start with a personal need. I can't really commit to projects that I wouldn't use myself. Once I have the need, I spend days trying to Google if it exists, and if not, I go ahead. (Then sometimes I find out later that it does exist, it's just that they suck at SEO.)1
-
I wish I could give an interesting story, but because I'm not in the workplace yet, I don't have stories yet (I probably will one day!!)
I'm a CS student. I'm a little bit sad because I no longer have time for the personal projects I used to have time for in highschool. -
Pretty much after couple of years of entering the real world I lost faith, not because I found myself not able to cope and learn but the amount of chaos and closed minded people that you face everyday pushed me to pursue my MBA.
Now I'm slowly drifting away to the management part because I've had enough with this, its just not worth it. I'll keep development for self entertainment in personal projects, and nothing more. -
Do you guys worry about your non disclosure agreements at work? I use my personal computer at work so I do my own projects on the same computer as work but it makes me a bit uneasy. We're a broke startup and I'm lucky to have the job so I'm not going to ask for a computer.
Also, are you aware of it when you make rants- trying not to be too specific? Or are you not worried?7 -
I honestly do not understand the hate for Macs. I know I'm not the first to rant about it, but it's sad that I have to. Yes, you can build a crazy PC with 172828 cores over-clocked to 79Thz for like $7 and have a taco along with it, but that's not the point. Each of them are good for their own things. Maybe, I don't want to spend the first 13 hours figuring out which version of Linux I need to run after I get a computer. I mean give me a break. Each of them are personal preferences. What people often don't see in Macs are value you get with service and surprisingly useful default apps (I'm looking at you Open office) and a solid feature set. Why am I even writing this, it's fucking 2AM.12

Sometimes I feel that as we have some rules and accessibility guidelines for 18+ when they visit any website, play a game etc., we should also think about 60+ who are not technology friendly. I've explained to many elders why they should not share their personal information on public forums like facebook or twitter, or why should they not reply a spam mail.... but :(1

Normally when I revisit an old project feel like tearing out my awful old code and rewriting it all - not today; today I feel like I am backsliding. I sidelined my personal project months ago when my real work got busy.
I have spent the evening discovering all the cool shit the project does and wondering if I'll ever get my head around it all again.
Looking forward to many nights tinkering and getting my memory back. -
Do you guys know of any banks that offer an API to their customers? I'm looking for a way to get bank account balance and transaction history for a small personal project I'm working on (meaning, plad is not really an option)6
-
You ever feel like it doesn't really matter what you learn, you'll never get anywhere because politics, etc? That's kind of how I'm feeling now. I've been using my time unemployed to teach myself new things, but it's not really helpful when it comes to finding another job. My personal savings can keep me going for about a year, I think. I'd rather not have to test it though.1
-
3 years (since Sep 2016 til now) and counting. 0€.
Building my own project from scratch. IDK if this is the right thing for this week's topic, but it answers the question.
I do have my paid 9/5 tho. But the code I write after is my personal and it's not yet bringing me any moneros.
It seems it's gonna need at lest another year, so next Nov it'll be 4 years w/ 0€ :) Maybe even some -x€, since I'm horrible at design - will prolly have to hire someone to do it for me -
I'm currently doing a small personal project on JavaScript and HTML5. I ran into a problem and tried asking my teacher about it. It wasn't the JavaScript teacher but the HTML one. Anyway, his response is, "the department won't let me solve your doubts about JavaScript, only about JQuery". Because some of my classmates ranted to the department about a project that teacher told us to do in JavaScript (which is not strictly his subject) So here I am, my problem is still unsolved and I'm pissed off. I wonder if its ok to tell a teacher to NOT solve the students doubts.2

I've been doing software development for my personal projects on Windows OS since college, and I just started dual booting Ubuntu...
How did I not realize how slow Windows was for coding until now? Holy. The customization of Ubuntu is insane.3 -
So as a student I often wonder how my future workplace will look like. So..
Show us your workspace! And not just the desk you sit by but the bigger picture. Personal office? Open landscape? Lonesome forgotten room in the basement of the building?
And which is the best? Close to the team to cooperate or fortress of solitude?2 -
Sad story , i guess im not the only one.
I have literally no friends who like to code or who seem to like but are lazy. Nothing
Is boring to work on personal projects or school projects like this :/
But today found out that theres only one in my school who does this, he is not that much into it but when he asked me what languages i use, also if i use php ...
I was happy inside to know that im not the only one in my school :D
That's all! Is here anyone or was in this situation , having no friends who like to code 🤔1 -
I'm not sure if I'd say I'm "deeply inspired" but I spent more time coding a personal project this week than I've spent on any other project in a similar timeframe for the past several years. All because I wanted to build a personal dashboard/startpage that queries the APIs of a couple of MMOs I play and displays it nicely on a grid of cards.
I wrote my own API wrapper, built a Flask site for the first time in years, tried out a few things I've never done before, and stuffed the whole thing in a docker container.
I'm no web developer (my job is more about the infrastructure than the web apps which run on it) so I'm learning a lot just through trial and error and it's actually kind of fun. -
A small request (This is a rant in my mind, formed such as to not let anymore people be affected by this shit that corporations are doing.)
TL;DR: please please please visit https://voice.mozilla.org/en. They are the good people.
Amidst leaks of your personal activities' voice recordings for improvement of their voice recognition and generation software,
Why not donate some of your free time for the improvement of Mozilla's software by speaking and verifying non personal audios at https://voice.mozilla.org/en
Do visit. That's for benefit of the society we live in -
Took an extremely hard 3d course during my exchange. We started 40. 6 finished the course. The workload was big , but not difficult.
But I lost my virginity and then personal projects made me improve the skills 😊2 -
Hi fellow devranters,
Just started working for a small engineering company ~10 employees. They have a single guy that have done most og the development work and version control management. Turns out everything was stored om his personal harddrive with a backup on an USB drive. I'm doing the "dirty work" on porting the version control to a network drive. Not ideal, but the boss was insisting on doing it this way. Have anybody encountered anything like this?2 -
Starting the day with Management complaining about budget and how R&D spends a lot. I start talking about the form to get a machine to a developer, that requires detailed information about the specs, proper justification, provide price comparison, fields of text which I know their departments will not check or fully comprehend BUT administration type departments always get the latest MacBook when their work literally involves little more than read emails, PDFs, write word documents and not high demanding software tools. R&D colleague suggests that a Raspberry pi would suffice for what administration personal needs out of a PC.
Management didn't comment.1 -
My firm wants to use my personal blog as a platform to reach more people.
This is not something I want.
I don't know what to say, any tip to kindly answer such need?9 -
Ok so I haven't been on here in the past few days. Had a few things happen that I'd rather not talk about right now.
What I can say is that I'm feeling a lot better now. At this point I wake up feeling like shit but after a few minutes I'm good. But with the sickness going away, so has my happiness for the past week. As I've been feeling better physically, I've been feeling worse mentally. Life is just a fucking nightmare.
Also on a side note, I found out maybe 20 minutes ago that my friend is going to his uncle's wedding, and the bride's father is the president of the Latin American branch of Microsoft. We've been calling him Latin Bill.
Anyways everyone, happy Thanksgiving. Hope everyone has a great day -
University has stomped on my passion for programming. The current academic education system is not a good fit for me. I want to invest my free time (I'm also working part time for a software company) in personal or open source projects because deep down I still love the act of programming. Do you have any suggestions for me? If anybody would be so kind to help me, I can provide further details about my areas of interest and things I don't like that much.3

To the people who so blindly hate apple: Name my other choices...
Winblows is a bloated system with no real package manager, i can't stop their endless updates, it gets viruses so easily, that you have to install an antivirus, and i hate their flat design, and linux is for haX0r kids who wanna look cool, it's just not practical for personal use.9 -
can you guys show me yours & your favorite personal websites?
i need mine to be unique and POP. right now mine has a linear gradient background that changes each time with javascript to look cool, but that's pretty much it. do you guys have any ideas?
i really want the user to be able to deepfake the picture of me in it by using their camera and tensorflow.js so that the picture will change to their facial expressions, but i'm not sure how to do that yet.32 -
So as an IT student I learn new stuff everyday. This is very useful, only not when you find it that the technique that you used in your personal project is not the only way to do it and is super fricking messy.
Whole weekend reworking.
(Not meaning I don't like the coding but just having to remove so many lines and reorganize files and the content of the files sucks sometimes :/) -
Guys! I just want to share this very well written article. It does not only apply to music production but also to our personal pursuits in life. Hope it helps those who are struggling, like me, putting one's crap together.

I've been a user of NetBeans IDE for PHP for quite sometime. I use it both at work and at home for personal projects. Lately I haven't done many personal projects so I fired it up on my Mac only to find it utilising 100% of all my CPU cores. This has always been an issue with NetBeans for years and it just seems like they can't be bothered to fix it.
So now I'm on the search for a replacement. At work now I use PHPStorm, but the $200 yearly license for small personal projects is a bit much. So for the time being I'm going to be trying out Atom with the ide-php package. It's a shame really as NetBeans is one of the good IDEs out there, but it's such a resource hog that I'm not sure how people can do any work on it.4 -
On a business trip. I brought my work laptop and my personal laptop with me. Because I am smart. But a lot of my coworkers only bring their work laptops. So I guess I am basically wondering how much porn has tainted the work laptops. Especially since they will auction them off around once a year. To be clear I am not wondering about the software taint.2
-
My personal highlight this year. We used an old backend technology, which required the use of the old Java Date classes, because changing the model was not possible any longer (end of life modelling tools). So we had to fall back to those kinds of hacks.4
-
working in a single file, not separating stuff properly. I don't do that for work related stuff, but I'm very lazy when it's a personal project4
-
After all this time I’m still confused, why was Cambridge Analytica such a huge deal? I feel like a lot of people knew this in years prior, that Facebook/Google were scraping user data and activities to use for personal profiles and hence more directed as placement. Stuff like Ghostery, Privacy Badger, Disconnect, Ad Nauseum (rip it’s Chrome plug-in) etc. all focused on not allowing these same trackers to get information, so not like this case just magically busted the doors wide open screaming that all those websites you visited are now in Facebook’s database and no one knew.
I just can’t quite understand why everyone got up in arms after this.1 -
Does anyone use pushover.net or know a reliable / cheap push notification app with an api behind It?
Im trying to setup some monitoring alerts back to my phone, using slack / teams etc for personal projects seems pointless.
Emails are currently being sent but this relies on me actually looking at them and I tend to miss a few important ones. 😂
Not to worried about daily / monthly limits, it's going to be < 20 notifs a day kind of thing on a terribly bad day.6 -
What's your favorite multi-select dropdown?
My designer says dropdowns suck and I'm trying to convince them otherwise.
(Codepens/jsFiddles are welcome)
My personal favorite is bootstrap on desktop or native on mobile but not sure that's gonna fly...
/sorry for not-a-rant2 -
If you were to work on pure JavaScript code for local and web development, what IDE would you use? Not a quality question, I'm looking for personal opinions mainly.9
-
Anyone else expeiencing this? More often than not, the fluid left in a container fills the glass up to the brim. In my personal experience, this happens about 6/10 times.6
-
Been put on a personal action plan because I'm not finishing my work fast enough. Work that the team lead dumped on me because he claims to have no time for it. But -I- am going to have my bonus pulled by the boss if I don't finish it by the end of the month. This is ridiculously unfair. Good thing I got a job interview next week at another company. Sooner I get out of here the better. I'm so angry over this unfair bullshit.
-
When did you last shut down your linux system? Mine, apparently was on June 20th, would have done to apply some system updates. (This is my personal system and not a dedicated server)1
-
How do you deal with clients that send you a link to implement some shit from Facebook for which you need to log into Facebook?
I don't have access to the company account and I'm not sharing my personal data with Meta, so most of the time I run into a login wall.1 -
I need to practice to get my driving license.
Since I can't ditch work or university, what should I take time from?
- Personal projects.
- Spending time with my girlfriend.
- Gym.
It sucks.10 -
Its not bad but, fucking hell, finally can catch up on work but burn teh fuk out of my left hand. Scalding coffee grounds, once flung off in pain, take forever to find and clean up. So now Im behind-er than i was and slowed down massively by having to type with 4 fingers and a bandage. Apparently i need a personal barista bc i cant be trusted with hot coffee grounds.1
-
Why?! Why do companies need to build a useless application for their product every... single... time? It's not like I'm going to watch the state of my (future) pension every single day, I only want to update my personal information.
(I kinda get why, but still, you can get similar features out of a PWA as well, which is less annoying for the end user)2 -
PM: I can't see the Facebook page, can you check what's wrong with it?
Me: *click click tab tab* There's not much I can do... I don't have the admin access
PM: Who is the admin?
Me: ABC (who is on holiday)
PM then decided to bombard ABC with emails & phone calls (& to ABC's family)
PM: When ABC comes back, ask for the login details
Me: But that's linked to the personal account.....
PM: It doesn't matter
Where the f is privacy?
p.s PM is an arrogant bastard who logged in to ex-colleague computer, read her personal emails, found out she went to a job interview, told the boss and asked her to come back then fired her on the spot6 -
My mind is not stable.
Office work requires - Linux Internals (knowledge on kernel, Device Drivers, Yocto etc) & Networking ( security ) -> CR on C/C++
Office work also requires - Python for tool development
My personal project requires - NodeJs, React
And I also want to appear for Interviews so also require DS & Algorithm
I hope you don't judge me3 -
That time when you are taking about personal projects with other developers and their past frustrations come into the project discussion all of the sudden. Like, I just wanted to communicate about this great idea I got with other developers, not about how it cannot be done, or how someone else thinks I cannot get it done. I can stand this happening the first 1000 times, but not the next 10000 times.
I feel that this happens to other people as well, but there is just no talk about it anywhere.3 -
When an internal wiki document you wrote for your personal reference not intended to be used as a guide, gets used as a guide.
Like I intentionally didn't write it well , with no details or explanations, it's what just happened to work for me, on my environment.
Who knows when and if this'll come back to bite us. Hopefully I don't get blamed. -
Read a dev blog and do it on company time, you’re never going to catch up when you’re drowning in your own code. Take responsibility for your personal development, and take responsibility for setting your boundaries. If you do this you will benefit and so will the company. You are not helping by working after hours, you are simply establishing and reinforcing unrealistic expectations that will eventually result in failure.1

Client: I would like to subcontract for this area you don't have much experience in.
Me: Alright, sounds good.
Client: Ok, so you can get that job ad up on the sites you use (Upwork / ODesk) over the weekend and we can meet again the same time next week. Sound good?

A note to the team designing recommendations on google ads:
Just because I search for deep learning concepts for personal learning, does not mean I will be purchasing every paid online data science course on the planet.7 -
Why do people have fucking problem when I just wished you for something
Why the fuck do you want to know how the fuck I came to know
And come on I didn't wish some unknown person for something too personal
I wished a professor for the birth of daughter
Why the fuck would you go on a spree on fucking around and sadden someone who just wanted to wish you
I would from now on discontinue to wish anyone anything and not even try to contact someone unless it's my business to do so
I'd like to be alone from now on
I'm not a people's person14 -

Embarcadero tracked my progress on a potential commercial project. To my employer, I know for a fact my employee email is not connected to my personal PC. How did they get that email?
I used the unlicensed pro version of 10.3 because I thought the community version would have the necessary components needed open the source and not break the project. I planned to use the software over the holidays to dissect the code to see what changes I can bring to the table before asking them to buy me the legit license. Embarcadero caught me. Even know my project directories. How did they do it I wonder?4 -
A couple of friends were trying to convince me that I'm not satisfied with my job because I don't earn 6 figures and don't love it. But it pays the bills. It's interesting projects lately. Very low stress. I have pretty good friends where I'm at. Super casual too. Generally speaking I am happy here. I sometimes wonder if they might be projecting their unhappiness on to me.
Personal projects, sports and fun with friends/family in my spare time are my real passions.1 -
I recently was given the responsibility of finding interns for our company. In the process of reviewing applications, I Googled one of them. The first search result was her Facebook page so I clicked on it, and saw that many of her posts and pictures were set to “public.” I did not see anything out of the ordinary or really anything that would prevent her from getting a job, but decided to mention it to my boss and coworker anyway, just to see what they thought.
To my surprise, I was met by extreme resistance to what I had done. I was told that it is not okay to look someone up before an interview because what I find might “color my opinion of them” and that my own personal judgments might get in the way. I was under the impression that it is one’s personal responsibility to curate their web presence as they see fit and that whatever is found through a simple search is fair game. I was also under the impression that this is pretty standard these days. Am I wrong? Is looking up a potential intern or employee prior to an interview unethical?4 -
Finally successfully set up continuous deployment on a personal project. Ever, really. And on one of my few open source applications. Destiny Clan Manager... it uses the Bungie API to help you manage your clan on Destiny 2. Neat little weekend project. Made some changes today, and thought... why not. It's all using Azure.

VSCode doesn't request permission to edit github workflow files by default. Because it's an OAuth app and not a token, I can't grant it scopes that it did not request. I am forced to use SSH or a personal token instead of VSCode's built-in Github authentication, but because there's no convenient way to have VSCode forget that it authenticated a repo, I am also forced to checkout my own repo again and push the changes across.
If you want your product to Just Work, then Just Use Open Processes that are easy to hook into, interrupt or partially replace. Nobody can think of everything. Not even Apple's or Microsoft's mighty designers. What everyone can do is to provide graceful failure modes and offer partial strategies. -
People thinking their computer problem justifies them being rude.
I've literally been in the middle of a conversation and someone walks up and hands me their computer and says "can you fix this?". Just because you work 20 feet away from me does not mean I'm your personal IT help.4 -
We had a discussion about coding style. At one point I said that it’s his personal opinion and not an objective fact. He went full on rage mode and said that he takes this as an personal attack. Then another dev chimed in, telling me to listen to the older devs, because they know more.
Not really a big fight, but stuff like this makes me mad as hell.1 -
What's up with people being super cutthroat about best coding practices? In my experience it's not very well focused on in schools or especially for self taught devs, so what's with the critical attitude towards bad formatting or indenting, or perhaps less than par code organization? I get it's suboptimal but if someone doesn't know that it's wrong then what's with the fire and brimstone response? Not personal, just something I picked up on.3

I don't know why it happen. Windows update then Windows create a TEMP Users Folders, put all the documents/download/etc location (path) into one of those temps users folder that was just created. Hopefully my clients didn't lose their files, since the Good users folder was still there.
Okay now Microsoft, listen, it's okay to update your OS. It certainly need it. BUT HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU CREATE A NEW USERS AND CHANGE THE PATH OF PERSONAL FILES! Thumb up! At least those file were not erased... -
The timing for this weekly rant is quite perftect, as I have actually just finished rewriting JavaRant! :D I redid a lot of work tried to make it very easy to use, and I think it has improved a lot.
This was also a nice occasion for me to set up Jenkins on my personal server to use that as a CI server (not that it's really necessary, but it is fun).
If you like it, check it out on github: https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
And feedback/help is of course always welcome! -
what are personal projects if not the daughters of hackathon solutions that never saw the light of day6
-
I feel that I don't sympathize with any programming language, I jump from one to the other (because I find some disadvantage using some of them) and I end up not learning any completely and the personal projects end up just being ideas. Is this search for perfect language a form of impostor syndrome? What should I do?10

I think the "ultimate success" means success on a personal level:
Take a step back. Realize *this* does not matter. It allows you to build and support your own family. Be with your loved ones. Have pets. See your kids grow up. Grow old together. Looking back on a fulfilling life. Dying surrounded by your loved ones. Knowing, they are safe and cared for. I'm so proud of you what you have created out of nothing! You truly are a developer!
And now go back arguing about tabs vs. spaces on the internet.1 -
You need to have a personal definition of success based on your own values not what is defined by society, neighbours or even your family.
Just staying in your lane will relax you and you can then function instinctively without any comparisons, living your own life to the fullest.2 -
This team mate of mine always finds a way to escape my suggestions in his pull requests.
Today he told me that what I'm asking him is just my personal preference and that it's not a thing just because our formatter isn't powerful enough to do it automatically.3 -
I have a friend named Rich. To protect his identity we will refer to him as Rich.
Rich: I don't like Dick.
Me: ...What?...
Rich: The name, I don't like the name Dick. <Rich then goes on to explain why he doesn't like the name Dick. How he got the name Rich. Like 5 or 10 minutes of this>
Me: <Trying not to laugh, because he is naive enough to not know the other connotations of not liking Dick>
Rich: And that is why I don't like Dick.
Me: <Smiles and nods. This was deep and personal to him.>
Things I wanted to say:
"I am glad we got this out in the open."
"Well, I don't like Dick either."2 -
Wondering: What does define a BIG project for you?
I just noticed we're approaching the deadline and there are at least 6000 lines of css. Not my personal biggest so far in terms of lines. I think i worked on projects with 10.000 lines9 -
Being at this a while I start to feel very jaded when we get business trying to tie down our work to release dates based on nothing other than dreams and unicorn tears.
My biggest personal challenge is to try to not let that bleed through to the beginning devs I am trying to help mentor.
Then I realize I really don't give a fuck and business just needs to get their collective shit together :) -
Studying information technology, working as a devops guy and in parallel paying a flat for my girlfriend and me, as well as a car and motorcycle.

FFS! Some of my friends convinced me to get Instagram half a year ago despite me absolutly hating it. And now I apparently have a stalking problem at my hand cause of it.
Not that some of my friends would stalk me but some brain damaged dude I had the unfortunate pleasure to meet four years ago. Had blocked him back then but he somehow found my account despite no personal info on it.8 -
Do other ranters / devRanters / members of this community share or publicise their devRant profile or devRant in general on their personal site or blog?
I was thinking of adding something to my site but not sure what to do?7 -
I'm a junior dev and my senior is not getting around to reviewing my tickets. Now there are multiple months-old tickets that still have to be reviewed. That feature should have been released months ago and it has not yet been reviewed.
Soon the (only) senior dev will go on a holiday and it feels kinda useless to continue to develop stuff that takes forever to be reviewed.
In the past 1 week, there is one ticket reviewed and there are 10 more in review. :')
It's not like it's a big team... 3 devs (The senior, me and another junior (who is on leave for the past 2 weeks for personal reasons).1 -
Growing list of asks to a team member that are unheeded:
1) Check in your code frequently
2) Stop the completion emails for your program
3) Stop using your personal UserID/Password to send said email
4) Create classes that do one thing
5) Reuse your database connections
6) Use DataTables and write to the database once and not a bunch of variables and write at the end of your crazy loop-if-else structures. -
The NPC has stated that the personal data of atleast 2000 people was leaked after the attacks on the websites of the philippinian goverment on april 1, the data contains; names, adresses, passwords and school data.
Over 7 administrators of schools, universities and other goverment structures have been called out for not reporting on the leakage of personal info on public facebook groups and violaton of the NPC in under 72 hours.
The representatives of the next structures stood before the comission on the 23 and 24 of april
- Taguig City University
- Department of Education offices in Bacoor City and Calamba City
- the Province of Bulacan
- Philippine Carabao Center
- Republic Central Colleges in Angeles City
- Laguna State Polytechnic University
The agency has reported that none of the organisations had notified about the personal info leakage yet.
This is a good reminder that you should inform about security/personal info breaches everyone that might be related to it as soon as possible, even if it seems unecessary. -
Just finished building a new Linux workstation that my company bought me! That Ryzen 2700X is just ridiculously fast! I'm not talking about irrelevant FPS benchmarks on some hip game...
I'm talking about compile time for the Linux kernel and buildroot!
Long story short, is about 5x my previous workstation with a Xeon 3.
Now I wanna get my hands on a 32 threadripper for my personal computer!! -

the last several times i reached out to support there were at least 5 days of tumbleweed and cricket noises. fine with that while not accessing personal mails during the week. last time i got a response the next day with request for more information and case closed the other day due to lack of response. well played...

I need to actually build up my website since all that's there is a digital resume currently
I have too many ideas for what I want like a simple blogging space, project showcase space, my teacher recommend a lanking page, and a better digital resume. but limited free time to figure out where to start and what to use and that's really demotivating
I'm thinking about using node or vue to learn a framework but again I'd have to learn them since all I know is normal unmodified js. And again where the hell do I start4 -
there is a similar tool like Microsoft Recall, not very popular, doesn't have AI features, marketed as personal search engine: https://apse.io/4

Okay question, I know it doesn’t matter for personal use but I’m not sure what the general consensus is in a team setting.
If I’m using a css framework in a project, and I customize it to match my style guide, does that require documentation usually?
Mainly speaking on changing the colors here for the most part I’m not going Rambo on the original files.
I’m asking in case I catch some freelance gigs; I don’t want to be clueless if there’s a few others on the project as I’ve only done solo work.2 -
Friday afternoon, customer sends in "your system hasn't worked since this morning, why aren't you fixing it!". To my personal email, and I've been *busy*! How dumb do you need to be to not:
- ...send emails to our support email instead of my personal email?
- ...describe WHAT is not working?
- ...be courteous to the only people with the ability to fix your problem? -
To whoever reads this, I hope you didn't take any software development related career to make a living working for others
If your software development career pays the bills by working for others, you'll find devRant a place like heaven
If your software development career was taken to do your own stuff, congratulations, you made a really nice choice, you might be poor, but happy4 -
Holiday (Labor Day) == Personal Work/Clear ToDos Day
I think I got 10% of what I had planned to get done done... :(
I'm also planning to take a week off soon though not really going anywhere... It's supposed to be a Workation but... -
I just felt like saying as I'm not sure how prevalent this is but the reason I got into computing and programming is essentially this, I want to change the world and make a better society and to quite frank I honestly believe that what you make and it's impact on people is far more important that your personal character5

Just open my personal project I have not touched in a year. Cannot connect to Local DB neither remote. I am questioning my self why I use PHP and phpmyadmin. At the time I started project that was the only backend coding I knew, now I may redo it in node.js.2

Do you guys not have a folder at your pc where you keep all your self studying stuff? Personal project code, notes, screenshots...3

how do you learn some concept in programming/dev? am not talking about the understanding, but rather the remembrance part, like retaining in memory in a way that you could remember to recognise/use it , the next time you see it or need it?
do you prefer :
- writing on pen and paper(ie creating notes)
- writing a personal/public online blog
- implementing it in a project that depends on it/ some sample project
- or something else?11 -
Back in 2014, I was developing a personal web page and I decided to add something called flip card on the page (it flips horizontally when hovered)
https://w3schools.com/howto/...
It worked but was not feeling very "natural". I mean the flip thing was not giving "that" feeling. So I ended up a fine summer evening tweaking shadow, speed, z-axis, etc. And then the next day I deleted the whole project because it was taking a lot of my time. Mood swings. Moved on to Machine Learning and never touched CSS stuff again. Was a lot of fun though. -
Any recommendations for cloud backup? I want somewhere I can backup my Linux NAS. Backblaze (personal, not B2) would be amazing if it had any support for Linux.2
-
Any suggestions for a Trello like app / software which I can use to track my personal schedule ?
A ToDo list like Evernote or Google Keep is just not good enough.6 -
Working on personal projects feels really great after not having any time for them. My discipline is a mess for working on other peoples projects, no motivation and i keep dragging myself around, social networks have been consuming my productivity like a brainslug, mainly youtube.

"The grid system is an aid, not a guarantee. It permits a number of possible uses and each designer can look for a solution appropriate to his personal style. But one must learn how to use the grid; it is an art that requires practice." - Josef Muller-Brockmann1

So I'm soon to become someone that carries 2 phones... I think. Sorta like work vs personal except I own both so more like rooted/primary vs unrooted/backup/specific use cases.
I can't imagine putting both phones in my pocket or on my desk... Or maybe even remember to charge the backup daily. Not sure atm how often I'll use it either. (It's a pixel 2 which I bought for live captions).
So how do you manage multiple devices?3 -
I want someone to appreciate and get my idea and if it is not a good one suggest some expert opinion or best practices to improve.
I am currently stuck as I have done multiple personal projects now. I have completed them but UI sucks. I started studying using YouTube tutorials but I feel that I only know the surface of each tech. I want to deep dive on each of the tech I have used but do not know where to start.
But I think this is just my burn-out phase. I am currently resting from trying to build an everyday coding habit. I'll still try again when I feel better. I think it is not only me that felt this.1 -
Been struggling for the past week to get a feature working in my personal project (which is the absolute core feature), and was just about ready to give up completely.
Quickly decided to see if it would work in Angular, and after a few tweaks from the default template it's working. Guess I'm not switching to React after all, even I did enjoy working with JSX -
An OS, an IDE are just a tool to get the job done. Switching to a new brand does not make you elite.
I used to be a mechanic and some guys were driven to use airtools because it made them feel powerful other guys use hand tools. Just personal preference at the end of the day same job still gets done.1 -
Not for too long, really. Around 12-13h in the office and next 4-5h for my personal project. For a week. Then I stopped crunching and went back to 7-8h in the office and 6-7h of personal project.

(not rant)
Hey MBP users! Is there any laptops as performant as a MacBook Pro? I wanna buy a powerful personal machine (Windows or linux) but none of them could match a MBP. Any idea?11 -
Nothing more frustrating than coming up with ideas for new apps in your head but not having a device to develop those apps on because you quit your job of which you used the provided MacBook for personal projects. But buying a new one is too expensive for just a month or two7

How do you handle a colleague who just throws his/her work at you saying that he/she is able to implememt things at his/her side in meetings. And when you ask on personal he/she says not done yet !? Things getting delayed because of that and I don't know what to do ? can you give some advice.....1

How do you decide on what languages and/or frameworks to use in personal projects?
My uni work is done for the summer on Friday and I want to start working on a couple of side projects.
I use c# at work, and this year I’ve been doing Java and next year I’ll be doing python with uni.
There’s a handful of languages I’d like to work with, but I know that I’ll get the best out of picking one language and digging into it, but I’m not sure how to pick the right one.1
