Installed Linux on an old windows laptop. This is my conversation 5 minutes ago...
Wife: "Have how you got internet?"
Me: "What do you mean, it has a wireless adapter built in?"
Wife: "But it's not Windows?"
WTF!!!
Me: "Pass my phone, this is going on devRant"
Wife: "Please no, not again"25 -
My 80 year old very absent minded dad made a website, all by himself, using a two decades old book he got from the thrift store.
He's even hosting it himself on an old laptop running Debian, including a redirect to a beautiful nostalgic /~username/index.htm url (not gonna share the link, because his personal details are on there).
The whole site is incredibly carefully crafted, and I'm super proud of him.
Who cares if it's not a React app? The 14 kilobytes of HTML 4.0 markup load in 20-30ms, and it renders pretty much perfectly in every browser including Internet Explorer 4 and Edge.

My brother and I have been messing with our IBM 5150 and doing cool stuff with it. I got it to play a youtube video via telnet via my bro's mac via mplayer with libcaca (ascii video output) + youtube-dl (a youtube downloader. The mac is doing all the heavy lifting, but it is still cool to see these images on a IBM 5150, just by typing a few commands on that old keyboard... more fun projects to come with this old thing.7

Finally got the last of the hardware pieces for my pi book pro in today. Figured out how I'm going to lay it out and now to make custom cables to connect it all :D This old MacBook may yet breathe new life!20
-
The original story:
"When I've got my very first android I was downloading any shit from Play Store. There was app called pattern security or something like that. The app was taking selfies everytime power button was pressed several times and then photo would sent to email. One day I left my old phone at home and at the office this is the photo i've received."12 -
I'm 40 years old today. Feels strange.. and getting older as a developer is not an advantage at all. But I got a wonderful little baby, a wife and a job I (almost always) like! So happy birthday to me 😊15
-
My parents recently got divorced and sold their house, so I had to go through all my old stuff and found this beauty! A pair of new bateries and it still work! Fuck Yeah!14
-
So I was with my friends on the subway and we were talking about an assigment we have due this week with trees in Java. I got to say, the face on the old ladie next to us when we said "we must kill all the children left in the tree" was just epic! She must thought we were talking about beating some little kids or something... 😅3
-
Got a PR that I had to approve named "projectfix_new". Told the person that we shouldn't use names such as "new" or "old" but it was OK this time. Later got a new PR named "projectfix_newer".6
-
Yesterday I won an old Mac mini at work, then I lost it on the bus back home, but got it back today. What a roller coaster of emotions 😅8
-
Often saying fuck it when I've got a project and I kind of really need to use git but I'm not good with it so I just go back to good old scp again 😅11
-
Hello world, I'm a 20 year-old CS student and I've been following you all from the shadows for a year now. I finally decided to join you, so here I am! I've got to say that I love this app and the community, so I'm happy to be part of it now. I'm currently on holidays, but I can't wait to share some good ol' rants once the uni starts again!

It's a great feeling when you are 18 years old and already got job offer, because you finished every single task during your internship - really well in fact.7
-
Got this old girl from a reseller on Ebay. I wanted to know if they were worth the hype.
It was made in Aug `89, my birthday. It's almost 30 years old and will likely outlive me.10 -
Why the hell would someone name their function printSomething?
I literally just got a message from an old Sololearn user needing help with yet another thing.
The moment I saw that function name was the moment I logged out. Stop using shit function names.21 -
Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30
-
Okay so my weekend project went well :D put my retropie system inside of this old r2d2 I've had collecting dust. Has a cooling fan inside as well as a 16x2 lcd I was playing with. Got a red led tied to the rpis txd pin, ports in the front for easy access and power cord and hdmi coming out the back.2
-
My dad's old MS-DOS computer (can't remember specs) when I was 5 or 6 years old. This got me into gaming. I always had to ask him to execute the games I wanted to play cause I didn't know how to do it. One of the first games I ever played was Wolfenstein 3D. Was so scary I didn't want to exit the first room :D4
-
I was 8 years old the boy in the block invited me said I have something to show you. His parents bought him a Macintosh. He typed my name on the black screen and there was a response.
He said look it says “How are you?” And I was mesmerised got so excited I was like wow 😲
Guess what the text was actually saying? syntax error 😂 Little did I know at that time!!
I went home and told my parents, can you believe what I’ve seen today?? Computer responded me talked to me!!
On my birthday I got a Commodore 64 that year and the story begun.2 -
A friend got a "new" (several years old) pc from an other friend. The pc made strange noises, so I open it and found a little speaker connected to the USB pins on the mainboard. Not an USB speaker but a simple mini speaker with two cables (see the picture). Why would someone do this?16
-
Was coding on a project at home and suddenly i got the feeling that i had forgotten something...
*Checks the time*
06.30AM
Oh... yeah...sleep...
Hello coffee my old friend...
Time to head off to work then :)
How often does this happen to you?4 -
Finally got my new phone (from China) today.
*Opens package all excitedly*
*Backups everything to pc of old phone and gets ready to swap the simcard*
*Notices that the new phone only supports a nano sim*
*Realizes that I only have an old school simcard that you can't cut down to nano size*
*Realizes that I'll have to wait until after the weeked to receive the new simcard*
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.
I want to play with it now :(12 -
So I listed my old gtx1080 on eBay for $500
I got an offer of $640 from a profile that is brand new. They want to pay (a lot) extra for me to ship to Malaysia. Their profile says they are in the US.
The fuck kinda scam is this?15 -
They finally got him. Couldn't get him on drug charges, couldn't get him on murder, so they fall back on old faithful: tax evasion

Side note: It's hard to find a picture of johnny boy without guns or nsfw material.24 -
God fucking dammit.
I got assigned to a WordPress project...
I AM NOT A WORDPRESS DEVELOPER!!!
Why do I have to deal with this giant pile of stinking shit?
I'm a php developer, I make applications, I don't write fucking wordpress plugins...
WHY DOES THIS EXIST, WHY DID WORDPRESS BECOME SUCCESSFUL WHY CAN'T I JUST DEV IN PIECE.
Dear wordpress developers,
Please suffocate on a big fat old cock.
Regards.10 -
I just got denied access to a metro station because I use the old BuzzyPazz over the new Mobib card, that digitally authorizes you and knows where you are, and when. I refuse to use it over privacy concerns and because my BuzzyPazz is indefinitely valid. LONG LIVE FUCKING TECHNOLOGY, DESIGNED NOT FOR LEGALLY GETTING ON A FUCKING METRO, BUT FUCKING DATA COLLECTION!!!!16
-
Got an answer from asking a question on Stack Overflow and it made me so happy that I giggled in my chair like a three year old.1
-
One year for Christmas, my dad got me an old tower and installed Windows 98 on it. He also got two old-school PCI WiFi cards so that my "new" computer could access the Internet via his.
I started learning basic web development. I would convince my mom (an English teacher) to buy me books on programming all the time when she was getting her own books at the store.
Eventually, I got a book on Blitz Basic and started making my own video games.
Then GameMaker, Java, C/C++, and more web development and design happened until all the sudden, out of nowhere, I'm a computer scientist 😁
It's crazy how much we owe to our parents. And neither us nor them even realized what they were doing at the time!1 -
Mom and dad never really cared me being a developer claiming they did not understand what I do and used to talk down on me becoming a loser for spending too much time making video games when I was a kid.
Got depressed for a long time and stopped making games.
Brother comes drunk at 15 years old, got yelled but bc he was out partying and socializing he never got called a loser by them. Now they laugh at that experience.
But never apologized until I got a breakdown. Fb becomes big and now they want me to invent the next Facebook and telling me to be happy.8 -
I recently got mailed by our support department.
A customer using my program experienced performance issues after updating the whole system; attached is a video recorded by the customer clearly showing the difference.
I watched the video: the old version took 20 seconds to load. The new version 26. After querying the data, it's shown in a list.
The updated version showed 61 datasets instead of 6 in the old version.
I asked the supporter if he even watched the video and he answered: sure, and I'm able to see the performance issue!2 -
Unfortunately it's same old same old.
Deadline approaching, changes keep coming in.
Deadline gets extended due to influx of change requests. Director says "ah the deadline is put back, that means we can add in even more functionality"
Anyone got a cyanide pill handy?4 -
Yesterday I got to the point where all changes that customer support and backend asked for were set, and i could start rebuilding the old models from their very base with the changes and the new, disjoint data the company expansion brought.
So making the start of our main script and the first commit, only having that, had high importance... At least to me.3 -
Just got my masters degree in AI
Now it's time to relax and work on my old old projects that i left 😊12 -
So yesterday evening I was going to play some games. Checked NVIDIA and saw new update (no beta). So I went to install it and it literally fucked up my graphics card.
One monitor stopped working instantly and the other one got this old tv effect like when you had no signal.
Took me two hours to downgrade to my old drivers because I couldn't fucking see shit.
PLS NVIDIA DONT PUSH NEW DRIVERS IF YOU FUCKIN NOT TESTED THEM11 -
That moment when you receive an email saying
"I got an error message that's says 'All hope is lost, delete everything'. Is this normal?"
and you have to explain that was an old printf that you put there for debugging purposes and forgot to remove it before committing...2 -
So today I got a new CPU after the old ones were decommissioned. A fresh new desktop.
"Where is my chrome I think."
"Oh ya", I open Internet Explorer, type Google.
Google delightfully asks," Want to try chrome?."
"Yes sir I do."
-This one never gets old!!15 -
It was my first ever hackathon. Initially, I registered with my friend who is a non coder but want to experience the thrill of joining a hackathon. But when we arrived at the event, someone older than us was added to our team because he was solo at that time. Eventually, this old guy (not too old, around his 20s) ( and let’s call him A) and I got close.
We chose the problem where one is tasked to create an ML model that can predict the phenotype of a plant based on genotypic data. Before the event, I didn’t have any background in machine learning, but A was so kind to teach me.
I learned key terms in ML, was able to train different models, and we ended up using my models as the final product. Though the highest accuracy I got for one of my model was 52%, but it didn’t discouraged me.
We didn’t won, however. But it was a great first time experience for me.
Also, he gave me an idea in pitching, because he was also taking MS in Data Science ( I think ) and he had a great background in sales as well, so yeah I got that too.2 -
My little daughter came to me all excited, saying "Daddy! Daddy! Guess how old I'll be in June!"
"Oh I don't know princess, why don't you tell me?" I said. She gave me a huge smile and held up four fingers.
It's now three hours later, police have joined in and she still won't say where she got them.7 -
My father got mad at me, because I had a passwd on my Linux-account...
I told him, that he hasn't got anything to do in my mails at all; Now, he took my phone :) Still laughing at his education-methods xD
BTW: I have to code in the Main room, seen by anyone... i feel like a zoo atraction :( Wish, I could put my PC into my room; I'm old enough after all -.-22 -
I found an old project on which I hadn't version controlled, so I decided to manually commit progress on a past date. Only problem GitHub calendar wouldn't show it.
I emailed them and because it was private repo I added them as contributor. Then I got this reply.15 -
hey i'm 49 years young today. can i get some ❤?
us old dudes have feelings too. i got praise from management for all of my above-and-beyond work and contributions, but my social life? meh: anemic. in need of virtual hugs and stuff.13 -
I know it is 1 week too late but i dont care. Im aware that my workbench looks like shit but in reality it is a "creative mess"
@Condor Do you envy me now? I have 1054z that is hacked and has all its features unlocked! I have desoldering station and crappy (very crappy) soldering station. In addition to that i got simple sine/square generator that goes to 1Mhz (old communist poland tech - indestructible and great)
Situation with my pc is complicated. My main pc (with the curved monitor)
-i5 3350p
-12 Gb or ram (2*4Gb and another 4 that friend gave me)
-radeon 7800hd (*RIP* cant play games anymore 😥)
-256Gb sata SSD
-2Tb WD blue HDD
In addition to that i have a laptop
i5 4 cores, 8Gb ram, 1Tb HDD, GTX1050
I use my lap for gaming now, i even connected that monitor as main lap.
(double monitors yay!) sometimes i use my old pc for minor things but i use rdp for that, it is great experience! (my lap displaying rdp from my old pc on second monitor that was my old pcs main one 😂 i find it a tiny bit funny)15 -
Ignorant, stale old Dev I work with discovers huge bugs with a new project. A few weeks earlier I had brought up the fact that he does zero unit and behaviour testing and got basically laughed at.......
-
My car window got broken this night and they robbed some of my stuff.. Well I lost around 100€ in stuff so it's meaningless, but I have to get my car repaired, and most of all, they stole that old shitty laptop that I use as a seed box and for file syncing. It was my first own computer too, it had about 7 years :/8
-
Ironically, my younger brother (14 years old) is far worse in tech than my mom. Whenever I explain something to my mom, I have to tell her once and she gets it. But if it's my brother? Oh boy, sometimes you got to tell him quadruple times and he still won't get it...3
-
User: - The application throws an errror message.
Me: - The error message is caused by a minor bug that doesn't affect functionality, though. This is an old solution that is in the pipe to be redesigned from scratch. As this function is rarely used, perhaps you can live with this cosmetic bug for a couple more months?
User (one week later): - I haven't got any answer from you. How is this issue proceeding?3 -

This has been a great year for me programing wise. Learned Go, got my first job working in it.
Not so much for my health. My six year old neighbor came to visit and I guess you could say the mother freaked out. We were just playing in the pool when the police shot me.2 -
Got a coffee grinder from my grand parents. Pretty old school, but I like it!! 😍
Just brew a big cup of coffee. It just tast delecious. ❤8 -
Thanks to mandatory password change, today:
- My windows account got locked because my phone kept logging into wifi using
old password.
- Google Hangouts were silently running in background with old session until I re-opened it. Work of others delayed by 4 hours due to missing message notifications.
- Docker for Windows lost credentials needed to use SMB mounts - 1h of debugging why my containers mount empty folders ( now I will know)
- Google G-Sync for Outlook asked for new password on outlook restart - few mails delayed.
All of that for sake of security that could be easily solved with 2FA instead, not faking that "I do not change number at the end of my password" -
WTF chrome/google?! Fuck you & your new designs & features!!
Anyone else got forced new grouping for tabs after the update?! Hey, you can group tabs in.. I know, I just don't want to!! It's fugly and annoying and counterproductive..
It used to work to change flags to not have that 'feature' but I can no longer force the old layout for tabs even with flags.. :/ It's driving me nuts..25 -
I am conducting technical interviews for about 10 years now.
I swear to god, the applicants keep getting dumber and dumber.
Getting more and more ashamed to talk about data structures, design patters or even the most basic algorithms, everyone with a graduation badge from udemy is now a software engineer. Fuck this shit.17 -
My coworker complains how the girl who got his old job keeps phoning him asking for help. He stops talking about it only to ask for my help1
-
So my wife bought a really old android tablet (it's on gingerbread lol) so I've decided to bring it up to android pie, yes that means building a custom ROM, from scratch, for a 7 year old device. I will be documenting my progress and if I fail then at least it will be published research as the memory optimization in android pie is so much smoother now it should be good. If it fails I shall try to build android go to the device.
It's still got a 1.5ghz processor and 1gb of ram which should be fine so here's hoping.23 -
This just came in the mail. Apparently TurboTax was bought by AOL...
I don't even remember the last time I had a computer, work or personal, that had a CD drive in it6 -
Oh yeah, got myself a new vintage 30" cinema monitor. Total pain to push those pixels to such an old monitor, but if you get a nice deal it's still super competitive as a monitor.4
-
At a previous company we hired an 18 year old guy and father from a minority and without a high school degree. He could write enough code to get the job. However, he took 3h long lunches, came in late to work and apparently had a problem taking orders from women. At one point all the juniors got an earful because of his attitude and he got let go, not long after. It still saddens me because he could have made a really good career if wasn't for his attitude.1
-
It would have been back in the 90s 🤫
I was about 8 years old I guess when I had a friend who had a Commodore64 and he loaded up the good old floppy, typed some things in and the screen started doing things, my mind was instantly triggered for “how did you do that?”.
Moving forward after that I was into gaming on consoles (sega, snes, Atari ect) and always wondered how the games were made (being pre-internet) that was not easy to find info for, otherwise I think inprobably would have ended up in the game dev world.
It wasn’t until I was about 10-11 that I finally got a PC in the house ( good old IBM 386 with 10mb HDD.. yes MB not GB for you young folk) and I was addicted from day one, MS paint, changing settings left right and Center in windows 3.11 and then when we upgraded to W95 and then W98 things got more and more interesting.
God the memories, and games (MAME32 was the best)😆
Shit now I want to find some old school games for a trip up memory lane 😂
When I was 15, I made my first website in front page (don’t judge), was a nice big walkthrough with photos and map locations for GTA 3, and since then I’ve never looked back. -
Took me a few hours, but managed to finally run Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 on my old school Toshiba laptop running Arch Linux xD Still needs some work, but super happy I got it running :D15
-
Cool, I got psx working great on arch :D Took a lot of tweaking but so far the graphics aren't too terrible and no popcorn sound xD which is surprising given the old hardware I'm using.3
-
Time to time I do some Hard- and Software repairs for neighbors and get some little money for it.
My neighbor let's call this one "Bob".
Bob has a new printer and a old one which is over 15 years old.
First: Holy shit 15 years old printer works still. WTF? Is this thing Hulk or what?
He ask me why he can't print a 128 site Doc with pictures in it from the old printer. It always stop at around 50 pages.
I tell him that it has only 32 MB Ram/Flash and can't print more. Before the Doc's were much smaller and could print that, but today you got files with more than 10 MB and on a printer it need's atleast 128 MB Ram to process and print it.
Guess what? One week later he asks me the same questions.
Why don't you print it on your new shiny expensive printer and why do you need still that OFFICE WAR VETERAN OF PRINTER to print it???
Seriously just use the new and better one!! Bob please give that old one a burial. He deservs it!5 -
"I got an issue on my pc, can you have a look?"
Sure, I'm afraid I don't know the solution to that, just google xxx and I'm sure there'll be something to fix it
"I don't know how to do that, that's way too complicated. Nevermind I'll take my old pc"
y tho...1 -
About a year ago I found this old desktop in my storage room. I plugged it into a monitor, started it, opened a game, and the game was running at about 5 fps. Unplugged it, opened the cover, saw loads of dust, got rid of all the dust, started it again. Fps increased 1000%.
Moral of the story is, CLEAN YOUR FRICKIN COMPUTER.3 -
Client asks to point their domain to a new 'squarespace' they just got, then call you bc they cannot access the admin console to their old site and 'it's so weird that all the requests are now going to squarespace !!'1
-
So the company I'm interning in just got a project in WordPress from an old client. I'm their "WordPress backend guy" apparently coz I'm apparently the only one who seems to know WordPress. The site has multiple malwares and they want to redesign the thing too. Work starts on Monday and now DevRant algo is showing me a lot of WordPress rants. Guess good times are ahead.4
-
I finally got to updating my old laptop when I saw a post about Ubuntu 18.04 being released. What do you guys think of it?8
-
have you ever felt having bad code ocd that you feel like you really need to clean this old project that you got assigned to fix, but cleaning the whole project up would take too much time and it is just not worth it . But you feel like you really need to do it...3
-
just tested one of my the old website i have made on google PageSpeed Insight got 0/100 for mobile and desktop speed1
-
Got a new job in a new team.
Someone had to learn that software. I said I could.
I was punched by old team most of the time because they did not want to transfer the ownership to us, they had to and I had to learn that
Software.
I made it, worked hard to automate daily stuffs.
Described each victory in my year review with manager.
Each thank you, I poked my Manager to promote me if she thinks I deserve.
I got promoted a year later.1 -
I just got a bugreport for an ages old release of a software which was assumed finished. Problem is, i couldnt find the source anywhere.
"hey, could you send me the file so i can check the bug?"
*sends jar file*
"yay im saved"
thanks java, for being easily disassembled 👌😍1 -
Back in 1999, when I was like 4 years old, my grandparents got me one for my birthday because i was quite intelligent for my age apparently, so they thought it might be a good idea. Today i m wondering if it really was a good idea xD
-
Found a big box of forgotten thumb drives at the shop, still packaged and everything. 7 yrs old or so. Figured I should test them. They're all the same 2GB Kingston drive. 30 tested good, 13 had 0 byte raw capacity, 12 reported that they were CD drives, 13 reported 1.1TB capacity, and 9 either got really hot or went up in smoke.6
-
Got my new laptop today!
Traded my old laptop..
The devRant stickers were too difficult to remove, so I had to part with them. :(2 -
This is interesting coming from the man who build the biggest IP conglomerate in the world. A man who actively tried to kill open source. Looks like he got into his senses at his old age. Although, he is talking about AI models only, not software as a whole.
Yes ML/AI models are software.1 -
Was looking through some repositories and found this in a 2y old PR, the only PR there is and ever was in the repo..
Ends with:
> Best wishes for the Wednesday launch.
> Steve
Steve never got an answer (on the PR at least) .. but the README links to his fork now (and no other changes have been done) .. why not just accept the PR or at least close it..7 -
!rant
Who in their right mind puts an id on the head tag.
Css? Don't need it.
JavaScript ? Can directly access it anyway
It fucking breaks old browsers your not even giving them a chance to look at least average !
This is for a huge site as well that he got to work on because he is related to the owner .. he's an arrogant prick as well ... Don't know shit bout programming anything4 -
I went home for Chrismas, I got my laptop with me but forgot its charger in my renthouse. Battery is old and it takes about 10 mins for it to run out of power.
What am I supposed to do now?
Btw Merry Christmas!3 -
My 17 year old cousin got inspired by Hollywood movie and said he wanted to be an Hacker. Now, who can explain him the shit that's shown on the silver screen isn't practical in real life. The life of programmers, hackers is rather about learning continuously throught their life rather than hacking into a quantum computer through a gaming console.
🤬8 -
Note to self:
Fucking comment your fucking code
So I finally got time to work on an old project and now I can't figure out what does what.6 -
Finally had a weekend to myself to work on some projects. I got my hands on a Sonoff switch. Did a manual flash of some new firmware and got it setup on my crappy old washer to do a little DIY smart home upgrade.
Always nice to get to do a personal project 😊 Just wish I had time to tinker more.3 -
*hmm let's try a new Linux distro... *
*creates backup, bootable disk and everything*
*installs new distro*
*reboots into old system just to be sure*
*boots into new dust to after checking the old system*
Idk I'm weird... (got triple boot Linux by the way) -
Got fired today due to one big cunt who just joined to sabotage all junior devs because his older than all of us, im dissapointed at how arrogant some of you old devs are, the good old days development houses used to be fun and young, i respect all of you with great heart but we are not trying to compete with you if we know knew tech better than you, times have changed, if you are still dumb about bootstrap dont hate on anyone but yourself. Grow deFaQuPndStopHating3

I get it, Java is an old language that's verbose as the day is long. But damn, please don't make it *even more verbose* than it needs to be. We've got the tools now to make it at least somewhat tolerable.
I mean, come on, we've got lombok, we've got streams, and we've had Comparator.comparing since Java 8. That's the best part of a decade you've had the luxury of writing single line comparator implementations out the box, but noooo, certain people have to pretend they're stuck in the 90's by thinking these multiple if / else statements are somehow still the best way of doing things.
Dahhh. Skill up people. This is not an industry where you can just do everything how you did it 20 years ago and call it good.5 -
I got moved to a new team. My old team was truly agile, and my manager was very "off hands" and actually let us work.
My new team is an older team that practices a bloated abomination called SAFe Agile, and the manager gets into all the details to the point of removing autonomy.
Shoot me please.
Paradise lost. -
Got another one of them phone-scammers who's trying to trick me into installing remoting software on my machine.
I actually do wanna see what they do to your machine once they're in. I have an old XP image in VirtualBox that I can clone. I'll probably let 'em play around with that just to see.8 -
So my boss got a call from a company, trying to sell a piece of software supposed to monitor your ink levels and send you an email, if they are running low, so that IT has a chance to send new before the old one runs out.
They wanted something like 20$/month/printer, so guess what I'm developing now...3 -
We've got this legacy PHP system that doesn't really run anywhere else than on it's server. It's not configured with git, and there's no pipeline. Just plain old SSH. How would you go about managing it?11

!Rant
Had the best day at work today.
This summer I got to do a little work at the company my dad works. (typically cleaning and updating some machines. Stuff that the others don't have time for. Pretty boring)
Suddenly I get asked
"Have you ever developed for windows?"
I have only worked with Linux or Mac/ios (python and swift) so I told him I hadn't , but I could try.
Next thing I am making a system check program in c# (had to learn it on the fly) and I get paid to do it! I GOT FUCKING PAID TO PROGRAM! I don't have any education or whatsoever (only 17years old) but I got paid to do what I love😍😍😍
I am so excited to go to work tomorrow!1 -
New robot in development!
Much better than my old one:
- sturdier base/wheels further apart
- got a custom designed PCB printed for it
- 18V motors3 -
Upgraded from a gen 6 motherboard and cpu to a gen 11. And the difference is asounding.
My old setup did everything I needed it to pretty well. Hell it got me through college as well as multiple part time and full time jobs. As well as the system that I learned about 80% of what I know specifically for my career
But alas the old cpu's age started showing and I'd consistently throttle multiple threads when compiling or even just using 7z on large folders. Hell deleting anything above a couple hundred mb would pause for a few seconds
The new cpu is immensely faster on such tasks (probably cause of the extra 2 cores and cpu improvements since gen 6)
I haven't been this excited since I got my first SSD a few years ago and saw the immense boot time improvements. Maybe soon I'll get an nvme drive and really be zooming with this setup 🤣🤣🤣6 -
My own cloud service. Mainly because of privacy reasons, but also playing around with servers can be fun. Before you know it you've got your own Spotify, Netflix, Google Drive, Last Pass etc... Without sacrificing all of you data :)
Sure, at first it may be a bit expensive because you have to get a server, but you don't need a crazy server to run these things, if you've got an old pc or laptop laying around you can use that too (in that case setting up your own cloud services is practically free).8 -
I just got fired. I don't know if I should laugh or cry, I'm finally free from that slow, obscure, shitty 20+ old dated system, but man, it really sucks to be fired.2

Just got a fresh Windows 10 install up and running on a 10 year old laptop within an hour. I'm quite impressed since I thought it's going to be a torture.5 -
Thx to a close friend :)
His mom is currently "bored" after she came to germany recently (getting too old to live alone)
Kartoschka, Oreschki, Pelmeni, Wareniki, Beljaschi, Bliny....
I got a ton of food and beer.
I'm in heaven. That's the best that has happened in the last months.1 -
DAPHNE: We finally caught the mean old Edge Browser! Now let's find out who you *really* are!
SCOOBY: Ruh-roh!
SHAGGY: Yoink!
DAPHNE: Gasp! It was Old Man Trident Rendering Engine all along!
VELMA: We could have worked it out from how Edge has exactly the same bugs and performance problems is IE!
OLD MAN TRIDENT: And I'd have got away with it if it wasn't for you pesky kids!8 -
It's important to redo old projects and ideas, here is why:
I worked on a project about 6 months ago, it was mostly just a "coding challenge" and I worked on the project for 3 days and I didn't get it to work. But I started working on the project again from scratch 2 days ago and I got it to work this time!
The moral of this story:
Just making new projects makes it hard to see how much you've grown and improved. But redoing old projects (even if they worked) gives you a concrete representation on how much you've improved (and if you have at all😉)3 -
*opens the code of an old project still running today*
*see the horror spaghetti code*
*decide to modernize it with good code and practices learned by the years*
*can fucking decide where to start *
*réalise it is impossible *
*rewrite it from scratch in a few hours*
*be proud*
It's really rewarding to go back to old projects and give them a good hug. You réalise then you really got better5 -
I miss the old steam sales where you could bag some really good deals if you just payed some attention. Nowadays though they just develop some rinse and repeat novel game, event or something and the deals are predictable. Max 50% if the game still got some steam (like stardew Valley) and 66-90 if the game is fading into obscurity (Turing Test)

After Kosovo - Serbian war (1999) ended, we did end up with absolutely nothing and a German KFOR soldier surprised me with an old Windows machine, and that day I got hooked.
-
I began exploring code and graphic design early on at about 6-7 years old. My Dad had a commodore 64 with a few games and a little handbook that had some awesome examples to go by. My Dad had at one time been a subscriber to a serial magazine for Commodore enthusiasts that featured a snippet of code in each issue. After getting into my Dad's old stash of magazines I was able to combine all the magazines and write the code from each issue to create a hangman game. This got me into computers and programming. Then we did some Logo/Turtle work as got into qbasic on our IBM machine.

Holy fuck !!! I don't know how but I just changed my username again. Few days ago I had changed my username for some reason and thought I won't be able to change it again in future for 6 months. But booya, I got my old one back 👍, never felt so happy finding a bug.6

Java Server Faces!
Don't get me wrong, I kinda love coding Java, but JSF is just a horrible technique for web development.
Had to do it since my company got to maintain an already existing backend which the customer wanted to have some more Features but the original dev didnt continue to support.
Attached hello world example from good old mykong for those not knowing jsf: http://mkyong.com/jsf2/...4 -

How to spot the difference between a tech enthusiast and an actual Programmer/Engineer in 2019?
Tech Enthusiast: I'm really excited about the New X, it's going to be the fastest machine in the market. It's got gimmick feature A, gimmick feature B, actual feature A ......
Programmer/Engineer: So I bought this 8-year-old Thinkpad from eBay yesterday, wifi isn't working but I could just buy an off-market wifi card and fix it. Might also replace the old HDD with a new SSD. Would probably start using it as my daily driver once it's fixed.4 -

So, here I am browsing steam for something new to play.
Thanks kwilliams for a solid 30 hours of gameplay 🤘
But anyway, I was just scrolling through and came across and old gem.

It's not High Def or modern, although it does 1920x1080, but damn it's a trip down nostalgic lane.2 -
Got that old mid 2011 MBA and just put Ubuntu 20.04 on it. Tried 18 on it before but didn't really feel right. 20 works great though.

Will use it for entertainment purposes, movies, music etc.2 -
Got a small job redesigning a website and adding some simple functionality.
Turns out, the old sod who built the old site is too proud of his work to let anyone tamper with it, even knowing it is never used.
Long story short, I am making a complete new site and the customer lost their domain name. -
Best client I have ever experienced. Kappa
So, I got job to recreate one old website, because the old one was incredibly fucked up. She told us, it was made by someone retarded.
The code was fucked up even more than UI. It was definitely written by some kind of idiot. Diacritics, mixed languages, no OOP, no FW, just copy&paste. Yeah copy and paste for every page.
The DB was another level of shit. Inifine is not enough to describe it. Column names with whitespace, diacritics, uppercase, lowercase...pure hell. Yeah and I had to import it.
Whenthe new website was ready for testing I got an email from her that it was her who made the website... HER!! Fucking hell, no more of this please!1 -
I got into programming because I couldn't solve a maths problem I'd been set, so my dad found an emulator for an old language he used to use a bit and managed to brute force it.

What's with this fad of calling everything a "hack"?! Not just in the dev world (though articles like "the 5 greatest Python hacks that will save you time!" grind my gears too.) But no, we've also got "gardening hacks", "life hacks", "recipe hacks"...
Dude, they're just "gardening tips". They're just "useful suggestions". Or in the case of "recipe hacks", THEY'RE JUST BLOODY RECIPES.

My dumbass colleague thinks the best idea to a Restful API backend is to store some kind of session based on the token.
It'd be great if that remained as an idea instead of this 11 month-old system he built before I got in.

Old boss: Can you tell me why we need to purchase Mac?
Me: Because we are all using Mac in HK and UK offices and we can share the company license
Old boss: Why can't we just purchase the software license in Windows?
Me: Because it is expensive, and the total cost will be much more than purchasing the Mac alone
Old boss: I still don't understand why we need to purchase Mac.
Me: Ok. (Walked away with approval form. Finally got the approval from UK office)
My old boss was the only person that using Windows!!3 -

About a month ago I sorted out some old electronic stuff and found my old laptop from 2011. A 2:nd Gen i7 8gb ram. I replaced it due to several bluescreens a day that later turned out to be caused by a faulty RAM module (was 16Gb back then).
Well, back then it became a backup laptop and went on the shelf and almost forgotten.
I went through all the old files on it and copied them to the NAS, replaced the mechanic drive with cheep SSD.
Used the old Win7 license key to upgrade to win 10 , dust off the fan, and it turned out to be usable.
I have much better computers so I would not use it for anything but today I gave it to my 6 year old nephew so he can start using a computer and build his knowledge. Worse case; If he spills soda on it he'll learn not to do that with the more expensive computers he will use in future.
So win win. I got to get rid of some junk that had been gathering dust for many years by giving my nephew an opportunity to get started with computers.
Finally, the timing: Microsoft announced a few days back that any new upgrade from windows 7&8 to 10 is no longer supported, but that computer still has a valid win 10 license as it was updated a month ago. -
Me - Ooo I've got this idea ! This will fix this "No ones" problem in programming.
(Thinking this will change the programming for everyone)

Just recently got a new job.
On the old jobs we've always held connection via mail, slack, fb messenger groups and whatever.
But on this new IT job they have this really weird theory of that when you want something, you've to stand up, walk to the coworkers booth, and use this super odd "voice" communication.
Such a barbaric routine!2 -
I guess my story is not really cool, but okay, I lost my job as a Digital designer (Yeah, I actually have a bachelor's degree in graphic design, I'm an impostor)
I lost it because I saved enough money to travel to Japan and I wanted to stay at least a month so the company didn't like it. after coming back I got a job as a content editor, I just copied old content from an old website to a new one, basic html and css, not even responsive design, then I got really into it, and bootstrap came along, the company opened a new department "Front End" so I got in, I learnt responsive design and Jquery, really loved it, I went back to Japan for a month and a half, keeping my job, I liked it, but I quit.
I now work as a remote front end and I feel stuck, I'm very comfortable as remote, don't wanna go back to an office, but it seems I'll have to, can't find any opportunities to improve remotely, and I feel like I'm missing what the "cool kids" are doing.4 -

Father bought a computer for the family in 2011. A HCl Dual Core Pentium 4 machine with 21" TFT screen. I was allowed to use it only under someone's presence for at-most 20 minutes each day for the next 6-9 months.
After that we got a network card (plug-and-play internet dongle) for the internet services. That's when I entered the world of internet and made a Facebook account. I was 12 then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
After two years or so, we're playing games on it, watching movies and using MS Word for school related stuff. Then my brother entered college, and used it for stuff like coding and image processing on Matlab, while I watched him doing so and getting yelled at for doing what I liked to do, at the same time.
After 5 years or so, I got a personal laptop with decent configuration for college work. The old computer still worked like charm.
Now, the old monk is at rest with old memories, unknown files and lot of bollywood songs.1 -
Being handed an old system to maintain with scant documentation, and being expected to understand exactly how it works.. FFS It looks like a bunch of monkeys on acid got into the codebase 😣 I doubt even they knew what this fucking code does, and they wrote it!

I remember that my granddad and I built a computer with old crappy hardware that we disassembled from other computers.
I mostly used it for playing games like Age of Empires or Rollercoaster Tycoon.
I really don't remember a lot about but I remember I also had internet. Never got any Malware tho haha.
Then sometime my friend came over and he showed me a website named "Scratch". We made a lot of crappy games and a cat that farts when you press a button.
So yeah I instantly fell in love and did a lot of "Scratch"-ing with my brother.
That's was the time I found my love for programming.
I think about 2 years later I got a MacBook (the old from my father) and finally started with real programming!
Now, after 6 years I have an awesome little ZenBook and am programming everyday.
Love it! -
More marks for a bubble sort.
For those of you that know the bubble sort you may share my frustration. I built a simple python program that took three integers and sorted them using a series or compound if statements using no built in low and max functions. Someone in my college class did the same thing but used a bubble sort and got higher marks. This angers me, I had to write an algorithim in a language I had barely touched but this person just used old scrappy code and got higher marks. Only a little tease but you get the picture, bubble sort is inefficient.2 -
Motivation * Time = Result.
But anything times zero is still nothing.
Why do I never have one or the other at the moment?!
5 month old son means I usually don't have any time but we've got him into a routine where he's in bed around 7pm. Yet after that I don't have any motivation or energy to work on projects.
Before December I was super motivated. Not sure what's happened but it's infuriating. -
received them yesterday 😊 they're much better than expected 😱☺️ thank you Team devRant 😉
now I'm just wandering what to do with them 🤔 I mean obviously I want to stick them on my laptop but it's 4 years old and it's got its best behind so I was thinking should I wait until I buy a new laptop? 🤔 -
I decided I'm going to repartition my laptop so that I'm able to dual boot Arch/Windows.
I really dislike Windows and got rid of it permanently because it kept deleting my (back at the time) Fedora partitions every couple of weeks.
Now I just really miss playing some of my old favorite games that I cant get working on Arch3 -
Ouch - got my first Windows blue screen in years! (Lacking a picture of it, I stole this one from the interwebs)
Cause: The LITE-ON SSD cache drive. So, can't blame MS for this one, but BSODs are great flamebait regardless of cause.
The SSD was 3 years old, which seems a very short life span for an SSD, unless it's an OCZ.2 -
Ordered to implement Old functionality in New system, not allowed to fix it, refactor or change the underlaying mess.
Wrap old system in a wcf, hardcoded some values, done.
3 weeks estimated so I feel ahead and got more time to look for a New job. -
I spent way more time coding than learning for school. Because of this I got worse in some subjects, latin for example, but also a lot better in subjects like Math, I.T., Physics and English. I am 15 years old and I have been coding since I was 10 and I hope that I can turn my passion for coding into a job one day.

It was simple Tuesday morning, got to work, turned on laptop. And hell began. First call, my co worker asked me to come. Got shouted, why I bought this peace of shit printer. Why it's printing slow. Asked to bring back old one because it's faster. But before I switched printers. I got strange and funny question, "why paper comes out hotter from this printer and not from older one ", I became speechless, and left her without answer. Ok I changed printer. Went to take tea break(hate coffee). Got asked by same women to bring original power cord that was with printer, because that one connected somehow slowed printing speed. The fuck? Too hot paper, now power cord? Why? How? That was stupidest things I ever heard.
P.S Slow printing problem was with her computer, bad drivers, something wrong with computer or OS. Anyway I need to change her computer pretty soon anyway.9 -
When you start a new job and you inherit a steaming pile of shit that NEEDS to integrate with a completely separate application but after repeatedly telling your manager his requests aren’t possible, he denies it and says it is possible.
Some context. They have an old application written in MVC. They want a new application written in react. They want all the old functionality to integrate with the new functionality. I don’t just mean render different views based on the route, I mean they want both applications to integrate seamlessly to create a new application. Not to mention this new application is completely different to the old one and has requirements that aren’t even compatible with the old application.
Also. I got into trouble today for completing the sprint in 2 days and starting on user stories (that were in the sprint, not the backlog). Apparently we’re not allowed to showcase the product until the sprint ends and we go through our retrospective/demo. LMAOOOO -

I've been infcted with writing awful, sinful, obscure code, so others can't read or change it.
Recently i got my first full time job as a programmer (yay). It's with a company with 15+ year old system and they are currently upgrading it. But it's driving me crazy with the massive mess of old and new code. However it only gets worse! Instead of making it simple and nice to read, they want it over complex, just to get something from the database i have create at least 5 fucking classes and endless SQL code, the old system didn't requier any SQL or the creation og new classes, WTF. I've become a sinner, of corse i use the old system, but i do it secretly, and i obscurify my code so others can't understand. It's shameful, but i'm afraid to confront the older programmers, they've spend too much time in the system and they've been in the business for a lot longer than me.3 -
Finally I've got time to set up my old buddy ☺️.. slowly slowly this night getting more productive 😂🤣

Couldn't find any satisfactory explanation online, so here is a question. Discussions idea etc are welcome.
How is the colour fill tool implemented in paint or other software?
I remember it running superfast on old 98 machines. Got me curious to think how they achieved it.
(correct me if I am wrong, recursion won't be a good idea for large images.)4 -
SOOO last monday I got a new MS Office and Outlook in my office. It's ugly as fuck and not as functionable as the old one we got here, and I cannot install Thunderbird or so...

Of course, the webapp is the same old interface :(
new site looks great though!!3 -
The best coworker I've had always wanted to fix everything! And most times he did. But sometimes his fixes created more bugs. Needless to say his name is Paul Ness so it made it even better hearing people say "PNesswhat did you do now!?" , that never got old. 😂

Hmm I'm thinking of reverse engineering an old game client and trying to rebuild the backend server from scratch... In a different language..
Quite a big idea 😅 but it should be very educational! Anyone got some tips and or tricks for reverse engineering? Or some pitfalls I should avoid?4 -
Got an idea to build a gameboy emulator with a user friendly interface but instead of use it to load ripped ROM's, I want to encourage the good old days of homebrew by building an online 'store' for apps and games but really hate the fact that it wont take off and wont bring back homebrew :-(
EDIT: I have the emulator already would just need the shell and learn how to build an online store4 -
I got asked to teach a bit 3D printing to a physics class at my old high school. But I consider myself an amateur at 3D printing at best and don’t think these kids are going to learn as much as their teacher thinks they will.
Especially if the printer is above the hobbyist level and doesn’t require user added upgrades and improvements3 -
If anyone remember my suffering with the devops team of my company, it just got worse, the dude who knows shit about devops and development got suddenly promoted as leader of the devops department.
if that isn't luck then i don't know what is, and in the last two months hasn't been any improval at all of the "new" architecture.

Normally when I revisit an old project feel like tearing out my awful old code and rewriting it all - not today; today I feel like I am backsliding. I sidelined my personal project months ago when my real work got busy.
I have spent the evening discovering all the cool shit the project does and wondering if I'll ever get my head around it all again.
Looking forward to many nights tinkering and getting my memory back. -
I wrote the most jQuery I have in months today! I'm so happy I bailed at my old job, be side there they would have just given this task to an older dev who could do it faster and not have to ask questions. I only asked the internet and I got it on about 3 hours!4

My job is paying a consultant to do some Node.js training for a few days. In our downtime the guy was telling us about his daughter whom he’s been teaching computer type shit at home for years. He says she’s got every cert offered by CompTIA. She’s 16 years old. That’s demoralizing af. I’ve got zero certifications. I’ve gotta get on top of this shit...4

Woke up with this parts song playing in my head though probably the first time in maybe 10 years...
So I googled the part I somehow remembered and got back an exact match and full lyrics... and an MV.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Official Video)
I start watching the MV....
https://youtu.be/qeMFqkcPYcg
And saw this so I'm like wait how old is this song... Apparently 1983...
I wasnt even born then lol7 -
When you advise your PM that it would probably be wise to make some time to refactor and learn the 10 year old system you got stuck working on.
'I wouldn't worry about that just yet'
Yep! you said that last time and look where it got us... -_-1 -
Got frustrated with trying to shoehorn an overly-customized, spaghetti code WooCommerce implementation back into one that is easier to maintain via plugins. Got on my bike and rode north toward my old neighborhood until I started recognizing landmarks. Part of me wants to keep riding and never return.
-
Is there any rant/post that is atleast a week old but still got 0 ++ ?
That is neither any upvote nor any downvote.
P.S. Don't take it up as a challenge for this one.2 -
Working on installing manjaro with i3 on an old Thinkpad T61 I got for 50 dollars. It's taking forever cause the internet speeds suck here and I've never installed anything but Ubuntu and mint so I'm hoping it goes well.
Anyone have any tips got this device?
Also slightly drunk, so that's a thing I guess.3 -
-Be Friday morning
-Be me sleeping, I have my vacation.
-Got SMS from secretary that her office (MS office 2013 pro) not working Word, Excel, Outlook.
-Ignored, still sleeping
-After hour received call from her. Answered say I will be after half a hour.
Got shower, breakfast and went there.
-an old error appeared again. Can't open any of programs, same error, can't remember error codes. But it's update or something breaks it, tried reinstalling, but it will shows up again. Quicker fix is repair.
-turned off updates cuz I don't want to deal with this everyday.
Anyway. Fuck Microsoft monkeys for not testing their shit before releasing1 -
Kinda annoyed that I got arch just so I could have a light weight Linux experience, after a day or two of setup I have over 800 packages installed with not much difference from my old mint setup.1

Theses operating systems are real! I once installed "Nyarch Linux" on on old laptop. Comes with some great pre-installed software. Such as, Catgirl Downloader, and Material UwU.😅There has got to be more joke-operating systems out there.5

So... My brother got his computer when I was 6 years old... It was a 286 with the new 64mb HD and the screen had 16 gray scale color...
Latter it was given to me when my brother got his 486dx2 and I did a course in ms-dos and batch scripting.
That's it, lots of sfigher, puzzle bubble, Dina blast, wolfeinstein 3D...1 -
No joke at my old shool computer system. We couldn't install anything on our accounts. As a joke I tried admin and no password. Didn't work. My friend pressed "q" with no password. Got a message "Totally not bloatware is now installing." Amazing.9

After a horrible 11 months in probation I quit from my shitty job and got a new job with better benefits, better pay, better working hours and better co-workers (we'll see if that lasts).
However this new job turns out, I'm glad I got out of the toxicity of my old job and finally have some hope that things might work out after all.7 -
Tomorrow I'll write an exam in programming. I code since I was 11 years old and as soon as I got to that stupid programming class in school I felt bored. My teacher is an former encryption expert and thinks I'm too good for that stupid school. Well at least I am ready for the exam... That shit is so boring in class 😂2

What do you guys think about conditional salary?
Today I got a 18% raise. I'll get another 18% (on the old salary) as soon as I pass the Salesforce Platform Developer 1 certification.
I'm pretty excited as this puts me in control of my salary to some extent. What do you guys think?11 -
I found this old book in my basement(it's from 2004). Would you recommend using it to improve my knowledge or would there be too much deprecated information? I already made a few (rather simple) android apps, but never really got to know java.6

Got a few
Crystal reports - words cannot describe how much I loathe this
Sybase ASE or IQ - both are just a hot mess to setup properly
Not a service now fan either
Esri map processing - basically entirely undocumented, slow, old fucking hate it
Arc GIS online - ridiculous licensing issues, undocumented APIs are given as official answers from the dev team, massive pain in the arse3 -
I have got spondylitis. It's generally fine but sometimes it's so bad that I can barely type.
I'm a sporty 22 year old young man. -
Cleaning up my desk at the office today. As I'm sure is the case with most of us, I have a draw that's full of old technical crap that's not currently in use (mice, charging cables, USB hubs, routers, access points, cameras, old phones and iPads, you get the idea).
Found out that not only do I have an extra Mini-DVI to HDMI dongle; I apparently have 3 of them. That's more than I've got available Mini-DVI ports to begin with.2 -
My first computer was an old Pentium 2 running windows 98 with no internet and just a CD Rom and Floppy Drive. Got it for my 7th Birthday I think and immediately wanted to make it do my biding.
Didn't work out. Had no clue what the words on screen meant and batch scripts looked like sorcery to me.
Hell even the options menu in German was a cryptic puzzle to me.
Got a little better in the meantime. -
[Advice wanted] I want to start freelancing as a software developer. I am 23 years old and I develop software since 2 years, since 6 Months I work as a working student in software development.
I am kind of feared that I am still to inexperienced, I am afraid of failing. What do you think? You got any advice/ experience you want to share?11 -
I started when I was about 7 years old. My dad was an entrepreneur and had a programmer working for him who was coding in the Commodore VIC20. That man gave me some books and since then I was hooked. Started my professional career when I was 16 (now 37), all self taught and got a very solid education as well throughout the years after 16 untill now. I just can't stop loving it.
-
Even though I am only 19, I got introduced to computers pretty late. We always had an old Win98 machine in our house and when I was 8 my dad introduced me to Command & Conquer on it. And the first contact I had with the internet (which I really didn't care about until then) was when social networks became a thing at school, that was around 2010, when I was 11-12.

I don't know how to feel right now, I finally start a new dev job tomorrow, which I'm pretty excited about. In the other hand my bike just got stolen while I was visiting some friends at my old school.

F Apple. I've got their touch-driven, motion-sensing, centimeter-thick, supercomputer (by 1990 standards) from 2012, and I can't fscking run Linux on it because my only official choices are the old iOS 7.0.0 over-the-air update and the newest iOS 9.3.5, and no one has published how to get root to either stupid OS so I can run an exploit on the stupid fucking boot loader.3

Update to my last rant*:
I got to know what my colleague did as he "rewrote" my code:
He just searched some GitHub-Projects and used the good old copy+paste method.
Awesome bro, "rewriting" code until nobody's understanding it is the best method to improve code.

I got my first PC when i was 8 years old.
I played games, and just played around with the computer configurations etc..
I also remember in my English class, I was asked to say what i wanted to be when i grow up, so I told the teacher: "When i grow up, i want to become a computer"
well who's laughing now b*tch1 -
Got this from an online crane game (there's another pic, retracted)... anyone else see this and think of @SidTheITGuy ?
Side note: typing his handle is kinda shaking... i mean if hes considered IT... if the small amount of us old school and/or real tech people even got -40% from a meteor or something...the world is doomed... i highly doubt the sids of the world could start a fire, know basic irl skills... or simple electronics even. o.O
...wait, is this what kids are referring to as "woke"... im still fuzzy on that...so are they, ive asked several-- conflicting definitions.44 -
So I got my MacBook battery replaced at a store (not an authorized Apple store) because my MacBook was giving a warning “Replace now”. Battery is working fine but my left speaker is making a weird cracking noise. Is it a genuine hardware problem that has been discovered? Or something config related change which can be simply fixed? My MacBook is around 2.5 years old.5

Hey guys, I've been teaching english for the past few years, started studying System Analysis last year because I've always loved this and for tomorrow I got my fisrt interview on a IT intern opportunity in my city, any tips?

Got a new work laptop yesterday. Set it up, updated it, and went to bed. I woke up this morning to it not accepting my password. I had to blow it away in recovery and delete my old keychain. Great start to the morning.

Just got excited about maybe using rethinkDB for some new project.. 10 minutes later I stumble upon an old notification that it's shutting down.. well...1

Thought I would help the webdev find a memory leak so step one build a developer version of chromium. Problem one ncurses and libtinfo 😅 got to love the split! Problem two gpg keys on old nucurses compat libs 😅. Linux is not for the faint hearted 😎

I don’t know about you but I use backticks for every string in js. I want to know that I can always use quotes and apostrophes and backticks ensure this. Also they allow templates and Babel got me covered when it comes to old browsers.
I don’t see the reason why should I use something but backticks in 2020

Nothing better than debugging 7000+ lines of css code when the theme had Grunt setup by default. (Old theme needs update because of client reasons)
Luckily the dev did a good job of adding comments. So I got that going on for me.
Trying to stay more positive this week.4 -

LOVING FUCKING SSDs IN OLD LAPTOPS I WILL USE THIS THING FOR LONGER NOW !!!1!2 -
As far as is can remember, we always had a family PC on which I started later on playing some games (win 98 later xp which finally died last year).
The first PC I got for myself was an old win 95 from my neighbour which he got me for my 9th birthday. At that point I started experimenting all kinds of things, first games and later I started to modify things to see what it would do 😅 -
I feel like it's gonna be hard to find another job since I lost my old one and I was there for only 4.5 months, probably why I got contacted by only 1 company so far....they see it as a red flag.3

Just got out of a meeting where they revealed to me that I will be the only dev on this project and I'll need to update the entire thing to a more modern coding standard.
But the project is 10 years old... and is massive... Why do they hate me so much? -
Parents got a computer home when I was 7 years old.
Used to Play Serious Sam,Rally Trophy and Freedom Fighters on it. Alaways wondered how these games were made just to follow that Passion and make my own 12 years later :P -
When I was about 11 years old I got my my own laptop and got interested in learning about computers. Started learning batch and could make some pretty fun text based games. Then as I got into my teens I stopped paying attention to the computer. But now that I'm older I see a bright future with Java development, with it being so multi-platformed. I'm now restating my passion for code and learning java. :)

Well my day was just too boring and i was depressed a bit too much....
My win10 LTSC lap fucking decided to fucking bamboozle me! My icons wanished on my desktop and because my dvd drive has opened by itself before i nearly shitted myself to death (because i have thought that i got drive cleaning virus) but after a reboot to the other hdd (the old one with old win 10, not the new ssd) everything looked normal!
Well Im now very motivated to study maths thanks windows!1 -
I bought a new router for work yesterday, only a cheap thing as the old one gave up. The guys have got WiFi again and as it's dual band I've got my own private WiFi band. Winning!!

Now I am confused. Either the old HDD in my laptop was so power hungry or KDE is so efficient. Holy battery life, wuuut. I got about 7 hours with my 56Wh battery, now I get 9+ hours.5

That moment to you start writing in yet another javascript mv* framework and think "I got this..."
And 10 minutes later everything is a new word for an old thing like reading something written in middle English.

I started playing around with computers when I was about 3 years old, than at 12 my "Technology" teacher showed us a programmer he and his colleagues made, a free and open source version of Logo, logoit. You could control a turtle and make it draw lines on a plan. Than I got into c++ and web development.

Fucking fuck,..!! was trying Angular2 in Electron... cloned 1repo tried to integrate Chart.js got fucked up because of old version of angular2 then cloned another repo and tried got fucked up again because they have changed little bit in newer version. FML.....

I got more interested about the technical side of bugs in video games.
Really didn't understand the Pokémon hype as a kid, few months ago watched an entire YouTube series explaining the Old Man Glitch and ACE exploits in the game. 🤷♂️1 -

My laptop battery just died, this morning it was working fine, i left it in standby and when i got back it was turned off, now it shows 0% not charging.
The laptop is less than 2 years old, i think windows killed the battery by letting it fully discharge (well, it's my fault after all), still now i've got to get a new one (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻.

Lots of thumb drives. My laptop used to not have much storage and most of my files would be on those thumb drives.
My first one was 8GB, then 16, then 32, 64, 128, now 256.
Each time I got a new one I would copy the old files to it, kinda like these crabs https://youtube.com/watch/...
All of them are in a little box on my desk right now, I use the old ones for backups. I replaced the laptop's hard drive a few months ago so now I'm less dependent on thumb drives :)2 -
My new ( old ) setup.
This piece of relic tech was given to me when my laptop was sick ( almost drowned in a cup of water... )
Today I finally bought a VGA cable ( got power one last week from a friend ) only to learn that the video is probably gone... it beeps at regular intervals and no picture... :(27 -
Today I wanted a new launcher on my phone (Lg G4 - old one), had the stock until now and I got bored of it.
I've installed Lawnchair launcher!
After 3 hours I'm still customizing it... ffs I have a ton of tasks and I'm "working" on my phone.
PS: I recommend it if you want a pixel launcher-like. -
By an absolute coincidence, my birthday just got a bit better. A guy I know wrote on social media that he had some ram to sell for ~15 USD, 16GB DDR3 (2x8).
It just so happens that today I've decided to start using my old pc again, after a year and a half of no use, which just so happens only has 8GB of RAM DDR3 :D2 -

Fuck you apple!!!
I wanted to add some old audiobooks I have in mp3 format to my wife's Iphone...
Ok, connect it to the computer. No direct file transfer. Start iTunes...updates... Import library..ok.. it's imported locally but sync then???
Sync purchases.. no
Mark stuff and move.. no way (got it playing in chrome somehow when trying to unmark everything)
Got to "buy stuff now page".. close it iTunes.. start it again and come back to same page..
Then I.. shamefuly Google "transfered audiobook iPhone" and got all the pages how to sync when you already bought items from appstore...
...
Eventually I transfered the files folder by folder. There is probably a better way to do this but I were at the ends of my rope so I archive this as a narrow win.2 -
I got relegated to updating an old project. It takes just 35 lines to do what we can write as a single liner in the new one.2

Got my amd custom build
Issue I'm facing audio jacks (front and rare ) are not working.

Troubleshooter is of no help here
This is frustrating me these days
Any help would be appreciated :)8 -
So my friend has got me into playing Old School RuneScape and honestly it’s really nice and I’m enjoying it, idk if I’ll try the newer version since old school rs is still supported (from what I’ve been told)
I’ve noticed that the game is basically just an economics simulator and I am down for it2 -
So I've got this old external hard drive that's on the verge of retirement. I bought a new one to move the content of the old one to, but it's a lot of data. (1+ TB)

Tips for optimizing Windows performance on old PC. The following is what i got, please add things to the list.

I can't really answer this one.4 -
Just been moved to a different team.
I talked to the old team leader, the new team leader and the CTO. Those are 3 people and I got 4 conflicting explanations. -

Update of previous post
I just got assigned to a project.
Project-specific training is designed to take up to 20 days.
I got materials, videos, and a person who is in this project for a long time to supervise training and introduce me to the project.
Only problem is that the project apparently uses 5 years old version of base framework. -
Do only developers have to do such tasks like Cinderella sorting out the lentils from the ashes?
Poor co-workers
* who had to program against the undocumented closed, ever changing API from Exchange Server, supporting over a decade old versions
* who had to compile a c++11 compatible clang or gcc on some sick old OS and almost got it working with compiling a fresher gcc with one that got stuck in one of the build stages. -
So, got my first ssd. It's so freaking light 😳. I hope it's not just the outer casing without the internal PCB 🤪.
No, i wasn't living without an ssd. It's just to revive my 5 year old laptop 😅
