A while back, I had a lot of telemarketers were calling me daily, and I mean A LOT of them.
I got so frustrated with he calls that I decided I had to figure out a better way to handle those calls.
At the time, I was working with a PBX software called Asterisk, which is used to handle hardware interfaces and network applications for phone calls.
I needed a suitable side project and there was a version of Asterisk designed for Raspberry Pi, so I made a fun little answering service for myself.
Whenever a telemarketer called, I asked them to call back later, but to "my personal number", and gave them the number to my phone robot. (which had a pre-paid SIM card in a GSM dongle mounted)
When it received a call, it would play a pre-recorded phrase, wait for 1000 ms of silence and then play the next phrase.
After all 16 phrases had been played, it would start from phrase 7 again and repeat until the caller gave up.
I had this set up running for a while, and then added another robot for english speaking callers.
The calls stopped after a few months.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!13 -
Me: *uploads pre-alpha images of game demo to twitter*
User: "That's a game? It looks like shit."
Me: "I was just showing off a test."
User: "No, like your entire game is garbage."
Me: "Okay? Don't play it."
User: "Also hacking is illegal, so you shouldn't be advertising it in your garbage game."
Me: *explodes into barely readable rant* 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭21 -

Hey guys! We are really happy to share the pre-alpha version of devRantron. The purpose of this pre-release is to test it on different platforms and get some feedback on the features that we have already implemented.
Download it here: https://github.com/tahnik/...
Massive thanks to all the contributors especially @Dacexi, @sirwindfield and @phantomBKB: https://github.com/tahnik/...
Please feel free to open any issues that you encounter.
Major missing features are Notifications, Settings and User Profile. They will come soon.8 -
Newspaper: This CEO is one of the top entrepreneurs in the country, a true tech visionary shaping the future.
--- 3 months previous ---
Lead dev: O2 have said they are will pre-install the app on all their Androids but they need documentation from us.
CEO: documentation? on what?
Lead dev: Our unit test coverage, bugs found / fixed, security scan results, performance assessment, if and where its storing any data etc.
CEO: Ah were not doing any of that crap, bloody unit tests, its not necessary, tell them no.
lead dev: ..... eh ok
O2: *approved*
... true visionary, well done to everyone involved.3 -
"Running the sample code is easy! Just git clone, make sure python, lua, gcc, docker and cuda are installed, and run ./install.sh. Easy!"
Me: Light 6 candles, sprinkle some thyme water with unicorn tears over my keyboard, start chanting an unholy hymn... shit... some compiler error from a library I've never heard of before.
Why can't these "interesting samples" come with easy pre-compiled binaries...18 -
Me: I want the laptop without pre installed Windows.
Seller: Genuine windows will take care of viruses. It's virus proof.
Me:😂 Windows? Ok but I don't want that, give me without it. 😂😂😂12 -
When you start a project...
What you should think about :
- What does it do?
- How should I make it?
- What should I need?
What EVERY SINGLE OF YOU think about :
- What should I call it?
- Do I need a logo?
- Lemme sketch some design features. Maybe Material Design looks nice.
(lol)7 -
Management:
"We're gonna make our own builder that sets up pre configured files.
So we are gonna get rid again of GIT, because with our system you shouldnt be working over each others files if you keep out of other peoples files."
So they basically are saying, we are going back to no version control because you should all keep to the honor system because our system is better.
I'm fucking leaving...
And possibly leaving a poison pill to boot12 -
Try this line of javascript in a browser:
<pre id=p><script>n=setInterval("for(n+=7,i=k,P='p.\\n';i-=1/k;P+=P[i%2?(i%2*j-j+n/k^j)&1:2])j=k/i;p.innerHTML=P",k=64)</script>8 -
Me: *spends 4+ hours refactoring existing spaghetti, ensuring components are modular, easier to test and fault tolerant*
Project manager: ...
Also me: *adds pre-loader image to register and login buttons when user submits form*
Project manager: *All excited* Awesome work. 🙌That's some nice improvement..
Like wtf dude 😳..
My takeaway: These noobs only care about what they can directly interact with6 -
-Let's start making the game!
-Yaay
-We should focus on performance optimization!
-But we don't have anything to optimize yet..
-Performance optimization!!!
1 month later
-OK you were right, we can't focus on performance now. We need to start making this game!
-Finally!
-So we're in pre-production now, let's do some R&D!
-Awesome, I wanted to start designing our workflow for adding new content, and maybe also loca..
-NO! That's unimportant! We must do R&D!
-OK what should we Arr-and-Dee?
-Performance optimization!!!5 -
I realized it that the only time I talk confidently with a girl is when I am solving some technical problem or helping her understand some computer theory.
Pre and Post - this phase, I can hardly find any topic to talk and later they are also done talking to me.
Should I consider to search on how to talk to girls??
Google already suggests that even in incognito mode.
Is there someone else with me in the same boat?34 -
A female boss I worked for, pulled an employee retention tactic that still gives me the chills.
She paid dogshit salaries to all her employees. And yelled at them enough to keep them overworked and burnt out.
When one of them tried to resign, she said "fine you can leave us but I won't be giving you any salary slips, no experience/recommendation letter and neither acknowledge that you ever worked here.
You get to leave the company when I decide for you.
You have already stayed here so long that if you decide to disappear tomorrow it will leave a gap on your resume in your next interview."18 -
I'm afraid that the wanketeers got a hold of this one.. as if I care how fast or slow your browser is, as long as it isn't completely shit like pre-Quantum Firefox used to be! And does it even make the slightest bit of sense when there's nice and snappy websites like the motherfucking websites, but a shitload of shitsites that load several dozens of frameworks, because long live Web 2.0. 22% faster, ON WHAT?!14
-
“In order to release on production you merge on production”
Makes sense.
“In order to release on staging you merge on release”
Wait, what?
“The CI for the staging release is called release to production”
What? No, stop!
“You also need to create a tag called pre-production-deployment, so that staging can work”
STOP FFS
“It’s very easy, you just need to read the documentation!”
How do people do not realise they are spitting out bs?3 -
Just found old logs I had with an ex-client, pre-devrant:
"What if we add the newsletter checkbox to the login, so each time a user logs in, he has to uncheck it, or else he will be subscribed to our newsletter?"
Not sure if that even needs a comment, I am speechless that was an actual suggestion, ever.1 -
Completely unrelated to dev stuffs but I just pre-ordered the first physical album in my life 😍
Can't wait till half December 😋13 -
@trogus @dfox
Can we have support for
```
snipets
```
Doesn't even need syntax highlight, just the <pre> behavior.
In support of my request, I know this isn't code sharing but we still quote code and commands alot.
It would be a nice differentiation.12 -
I have never doubted my abilities more, before this happened:
I got a Linux VM on Azure, downloaded apache httpd source which I proceeded to configure, make and install.
As expected, install failed with something related to apr and apr-util.
Searched several mailing lists, tried out several configure options, nothing worked..
After almost an hour, it stuck to me, all I had to do was "sudo yum install httpd" !!!
Disappointed that I missed something so simple, but when I did that, it came back with 'Nothing to do'...
Realized, httpd was pre-installed in that VM.. I just had to start the service !!!
:facepalm1 -
In Javascript, we have frameworks named after everything.
The only thing we don't have is a framework named after pre-mature ejaculation.
But I hear that's coming quickly.2 -
This pretty much sums me up when starting a pre existing project. Like what the hell is "Batmanable" "Jokerizable"1
-
A kid in our neighbourhood hit my dog a few months ago.
Today, he asked for some technical help.
I solved his problem.
Asked him to install Windows 9 and then come to me for further guidance since it was a pre-requisite for the software he needs.
It has been exactly 18 days since I have last seen him.2 -
1. Pre-sales to Client: We can develop 200 APIs with 10 developers in 9 months.
2. Client: Ok! Cool, its a deal.
-- Sprint starts --
3. Actual: We are 6 developers, commited (or sold out) to make 200 APIs in 9 months.
Fucking pre-sales.3 -
Backend colleague : the API is online. It's tested and working, you can start the dev.
Me trying to manually call the API with all the fields pre validated : "error : invalid fields"
EVERY. FUCKING. TIME !
To all the backend developers : we are NOT your personal testers, and we are NOT supposed to clean your mess because you're too lazy to FUCKING TEST THE HAPPY PATH!!!
Thank you for your consideration.5 -
Show a pre recorded video of ur product during a ppt rather than a live demo. There are literally zero chances of fuckups.. Saved me quite a few embarrassments.1
-
I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!4 -
So many meetings that we have pre-meeting meetings.
Tomorrow is the best meeting of all - the show and tell, where we can say we spent all sprint in meetings and did no actual work.1 -
The awkward moment when the website is faster on my shitty computer than on its pre-production server...4

Prior to becoming a dev, one of my numerous jobs was working at Quiznos. They would often send me outside in the cup costume where I would dance around like a fool.
People would throw things...
What was your pre-dev "career"?12 -
So today, again, I discovered the importance of unitests.
I was solving this performance issue, in which we had a few update actions for multiple entities in mongo, but it took FOREVER to complete, even when I unified it into one bulkWrite command.
Since the unified write did improve performance slightly, and we wanted to move on, we decided to let this bug go.
So there I was committing my changes when I got a rejection from the pre-commit hook since I didn't have enough unitests coverage.
Ok, let's start writing some unitests.
Some unitests also needed to test the bulk write. So there I was comparing expected with actual result, and suddenly I got a huge facepalm.
Apparently some rogue for loop iterated all entities again for each entity that needed update. So instead of getting one update per entity, I got N identical update commands per each of the N entities 🤦♂️
Needless to say, fixing this fixed the performance bug entirely.
Thank you unitests and pre-commit hooks!2 -
Hello, world!
Soo.. I am half way done with Pre-Release 10!
Woohoo!
However.. The update log is already as long as the full update log for the last update.. Which was twice as long as the log for the update before..
I'm Starting to notice a pattern.. XD
This is all good and well, but I feel as if I'm overworking myself. I'm getting stressed out, and I'm not spending near as much time with my girlfriend. 3: But, I'm having fun. I'm genuinely enjoying myself, and I'm making a ton of progress in such a short amount of time. I also have a new team member!
Idk.. I haven't done anything the past two days really. Work nor spending time with my girlfriend. I'm stressed, and I'm not sure what I should do. I'm sooper modivated to keep working, but I feel that my situation will only get worse.
---
Because I'm sure some of you will be interested ('cause my game is very popular in this community <3), here is the update list so-far. Do note that this is not the final list, and things will be added, and may be removed.
As you can see below, this update is mostly focussed around API's. Specifically Modding, and the new FileSystem. On top of this, I will *try* and tinker with the official Patreon API for Java and see if I can't intergrate that into my game. I'll also work on a ModManager, but I'm not sure if either of these will make it into this release. I also have plans for new Apps and Commands for this release, as well as working and polishing up existing Apps and Commands.
---
* Closing the game with X button (and other ways) now also calls preExitTasks()
+ Added AddonLoader. It's literally a Mod-Loader. (Your welcome :3) A tutorial coming soon, but just know that it's standard Java codeing and you simply need to drop the mod.jar into the game's addons/ directory.
++ Added "API" - This is a bunch of methods that are added for the Mods to use. These Methods likely wouldn't of been added othewise.
+ Added in-game FileSystems (Folder, files..)
++ Added FileNavigator API for traversing the in-game FileSystems
* Fixed a major bug with the "debug" command where you could no longer run any commands after enabling debug mode.
+ Added GameSave creation
+ Added System creation
+ New Save + localsystem are generated on startup
++ Added WindowBuilder API for creating Apps. This makes creating Apps much, much simpler, and is intended for not only us, but use in Mods.
* We re-wrote the Console Class from scratch, and turned it into an API for creating custom Terminal Apps. (Commands are now created using the Command Class and are then passed to Console and registered as either a Local or Global command)
++ Added Command API for creating commands. These commands execute Java code, much like a JavaFX Button would, on each call. You also get everything after the first [space] of the command that was passed, as a String.
* Re-wrote ALL previously implimented Apps.
* Re-wrote ALL previously implimented Commands.
+ Added "debugtest" command to test debug mode. (This just prints a totally boring random message, and you shouldn't try it.) [Note: This "command will not exist" when debug mode is false.]
+ Added "cd" command. ("cd ~" "cd .." "cd /home/folder" "cd etc" "cd /")
+ Added "cat" command. ("cat file" "cat /folder/file")
+ Added "mkdir" command.
+ Added "rm" command.
+ Added "dir" command.
If you're new and you have no clue what I'm talking about, here's the info page: https://trello.com/b/0bH2SjQf1 -
I wrote an app (took all morning until now) that tells me which shows and movies Amazon removed from Prime...
I forget why I wanted this... was it just to screw with Amazon because they rejected me....
The app is also going to tell me what movies/shows were added because they can't fucking sort them in chronological order by release date. I don't want movies from pre-1990s that were recently added...
Yes I could search for them manually but it's too fuckin tedious, gotta turn on like 10 filtering options...
And maybe I just want to run mini-DDOS attacks on their servers...13 -

I had a few girlfriends in the past and now am married for 4 years and can't remember any gfs before the married life. Ever had a pre-identity crisis?

It's absolutely beautiful when websites properly implement status changes via ajax and the rest is just pure html (can be whatever server-side, as long as it gets pre-rendered and served).10

Today we migrated from TFVC to Git.
Emotional times. This may become the reason for a future rant or it may be the best decision we've ever made (had made for us).15 -
My most successful project was simple yet useful WAP service, which today could be called a „social network”. I’ve made it in 2001, when we had „boom” for GPRS in Poland and some operators offered almost unlimited access over it for some very little money. Main pillars of my WAP service were chatrooms and SMS gateways. In next few years I’ve got hundreds or even thousands of users. Lots of them met IRL, fell in love and maked families. We travelled across Poland and met with others - great young people, living in pre-FB era... That was really good time, which will, sadly, never return...1

Since i cant use these, first come first serve!

Just purchased a new house and was looking for a new ISP. Found a local ISP that is still offering dial up services and "Professional Website Design". Their website was obviously pre-web 2.0 all static nested tables and sliced images.4
-
Just wrote my own webpack plugin for VueJS.
In serverless application there isn't a good way to pre render a single page web application as there is no server to do this task.
What we can do is use serverside rendering with webpack to locally (or in CI) generate the static HTML markup and include them in a template file like EJS.
In that way, the client browsers would not have to wait for the initial render and the search engines will also be happy.
This feels good! Time to upload it as a npm package 😇2 -
Customer: I have a problem with the new BI program.
Me: ok, show me what's wrong.
Customer: when I double-click the icon the program start but does not do anything else...
Me: because you didn't ask anything to the program, you have to launch the utilities by clicking menus like, for example, to make a New report or to Open another report pre-saved.. the program doesn't know what you think.
Customer: ah.......ok, maybe It's time for me to put a paper bag (like for bread) on my head and do 5 minutes of embarassment lonely -
The legacy codebase, episode 94385948:
How to neatly organize your code in the age pre-docblocks.

Bonus 2: seriously? A function for that?13 -
Git pre-commit check means that only team lead can merge to master. Team lead is also pulled in meetings all day everyday and so never has time to merge...1

Worst career choice: Not following computer science because there were few careers for computer techs pre-2000s.
Best career choice: Do a 2 years course in CNC (paid by the government). Also, the worst carer choice because I got my burn out in the first (one of the best in the region) molding company I worked for. -

Why even is Microsoft Teams?
Why does it suck so bad? Why is it a memory hog? Why does the ELECTRON desktop app not have native ARM64 support neither on Windows nor macOS? Why is it even an Electron app? Why the web version does not work with Safari (then again, barely anything more complex than my portfolio site works on Safari)? Why is the UI from 2016? Why is it preinstalled with Windows 11? Why the pre-installed Windows 11 version is a completely different entity? Why the preinstalled Windows 11 version does not work with school/work version of Teams calls?10 -
Me (junior with 1 month of work experience): have to shutdown the service on pre-release server, then reload it. Best case: ~10 seconds of bo, no one will know...I hope.
Result: 13 seconds of bo, no one noticed.
Senior: I'm deleting the tables and reload them through sh script. Oh fuck the reload script doesn't work......
5 minutes of bo for her.
What did we learn from this? I think nothing 🤔 -
I'm currently tired, stressed, anguish and frustrated.
I have a live issue(a bug to hot fix asap), 7 files to reprocess to be finished by tomorow, 2 enhancements( 1 under pre-live testing, 1 for live release), and an unstable internet connection today. Tomorrow is saturday. Clock is ticking.
How am i suppose to finish everything on time? :(7 -
If my Kickstarter campaign get approved an its succeed finally I can afford to hire some of you guys :)
I made it possible to check the un-inspected pre-beta holdings here:

There are 28053 of them. I have to say that It's going well considering that no one wants to join me in development... it makes me a bit sad...10 -

My boss's SQL schema has no foreign keys and he said he left them out intentionally because they should be handled in the application layer and they're a large performance impact.
This is a fresh greenfield project and he's already pre-optimizing for problems we don't have yet, on things that may or not be bottlenecks using ideas (e.g. foreign keys have huge performance costs on mariadb/auora) with no hard data or facts to back them up.
Let's start a new project with some technical debt!2 -
Just checked my work email to see what's coming in today....
And see someone on the London scheduled a 9AM meeting with me at 5:30AM my time.
Yes thanks for the advance notice...
Not going to be in the morning though and well the whole thing is BS based on some stupid new requirement that doesn't make sense.
Basically asking to migrate a while application to a new platform that no one understands yet.... Just to add a completely unrelated be feature...
Feature: 1month
Migration: 1 year based on the pre-reqs needed5 -
When you take pre workout and are getting ready to workout but you have a few min before you have to leave so you look at your current project and end up rewriting most of the program and never making it to the gym... Thanks pre workout...4

More companies need to clamp down on hard-coding secrets. It’s not difficult to store them somewhere else, and there’s swathes of free tooling to stop you doing it in the first place.
Heck, set up a pre-commit hook. Link it to a shock collar.4 -

Programming contest assignments, first level:
1. "...if you don't know how to return values from a function, you can just print them"
2. "...if you don't know how to read files, you can assume data is in global variables"
3. Required recursion
4. "...and estimate its time complexity.", "You may pre-process the data, but use at most o(n^3)", "your algorithm must use under n^3 operations"
That escalated quickly!1 -
The person who claims we should be "in control" of our stack and not use any of this pre-made, one size fits all, BaaS bullshit.
Even though none of our projects are even remotely close to needing scaling and whatnot.
Then proceeds to argue all we need is a step by step guide on how to deploy things very easily using Cloud Formation.
Spends the next two weeks trying to figure out why config files and scripts don't work.
And now that we have that "recipe", we're fully capable of deploying our own pre-made, one size fits all backend.1 -
I didn't even realise .NET 7 was released YESTERDAY until a startup wizard pre-selected that instead of .NET 6 LTS
It was surprisingly a quiet launch .-.

I knew I wanted to be a dev when I saw the Game Developer Barbie come out...
Just kidding.
The moment I knew was when I started creating my own Myspace templates. It was so awesome to have one that I built myself. I wasn't forced to choose from those pre-made templates, none of which truly expressed my adolescent personality. :D -
Sprint 0: This design is the appropriate amount of engineering abstraction.
Sprint 2: This is over-engineered, too much work
Sprint 5: This is under-engineered, too many edge cases
Sprint 10: This is over-engineered, component Foo could be replaced by a bash script
Sprint 42: Foo is now the cornerstone of half our business logic2 -
One does not really appreciate pre-built binaries until he has to build a massive code-base [and it takes hours on top-notch hardware, plus a lot of error tweaking].
Thank you to all the open-source supporters that take their time to pre-compile binaries and/or automate builds.
As contributors, they deserve our appreciation as much as developers do.14 -
I was really tired 2hrs ago.... but then I found some motivation.
So basically I wrote an image viewer app (also has a scraper and a downloader).
The Viewer component loads each image 1 at a time... but these are like 4MB each so there's like 5s lag...
It's now 11:30PM and I have just finished implementing a cache so it pre-loads N pictures before and after the current one.
Now moving between images is so fast and smooth...
TLDR.... girls can actually motivate you to code some amazing stuff... even when you're tired.
I clipped just the top as well... the rest is NSFW....6 -
It’s the second maths pre-final exam today. Next after that - the finals.

My Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th gen came with Windows pre-installed with a ton of bloatware. Reinstalled Windows just to clean all the crap off to learn that the SSD had an MBR partition table. Wiped the entire drive to change to GPT, then reinstalled Windows again and (of course) added linux. Gotta love how companies put random bloatware and crusty partition tables on brand new technology. It's ok, laptop. You're in good hands now.1

This binary will only run on these 3 Ubuntu versions, because it still depends on a fuckton of shared-objects of " default" libraries and this shit-distro is the only one, that comes pre-bloated with all of them.5 -

you know what was fun?
Back in 2012, I started developing an app for the windowsphone (7 back then) which was basically an offline backup navigation for pilots with a few extras likr weather data for pre flight planning.
It was so cool doing all this back then, because there weren't many wp devs out there.
Microsoft even sent me 6 different phones (straight from Redmond) to play with (and keep them).
Those were the days 😀😀1 -
Some blocker like uBlock origin should come pre-installed by now. I mean at least the malicious stuff could get blocked and the online world could be a bit more safe. Legit, not-in-the-face ads are still okay at times, I guess :/5

Going through the conversation for xxxxth time with my business partner, why we will not launch a new product on top of pre-made PHP script / plugin.
Just got our company into TDD, and automated QA via CI server & code checks etc, PLEASE stop trying to drag us back into the land of spaghetti code & bug legions in production. That's all thxbye. -
When QA isn't smart and you spend way to much time talking and in meetings.... "Listen, we are only testing for new bugs related to this fix, if there is a pre-existing bug, document it and move on".
QA finds a pre-existing bug and stays fixated on it for 3 days....1 -

Dell et al should start selling pre-stickered laptops so execs could buy that "dev cred" look.
There's probably a science to producing a look that doesn't make you look like someone's mum at a cool party.
What sticker placement approach do people use?2 -
Why do you root your phone?
My original reason was to enable things my restrictive carrier prohibited, like tethering. But now that carrier is years behind me. On my previous phone, I rooted to disable onerous pre-installed software. On my current phone, I see no reason to root it at all, except maybe to try out some roms.
How about you?11 -
I had expected to see people posting about the Valve Index so I waited a bit because I'm lazy.
Since nobody has posted it, here it is.
A few days ago Valve started the pre-order process for their new VR set. I bought one within 5 minutes of going live. They sold out in 8 minutes on the US store and within 25 minutes in Europe.
Who else has ordered/is gonna order it? Why (not)?7 -
What do you guys think about Ubuntu on windows 10, any first impressions?
I wanna try it out coz my new Laptop comes pre installed with 10 and installing Ubuntu is kinda very problematic in high end laptops according to a little research I did.12 -
Finally decided to switch from windows 10 to a Linux distro, probably Ubuntu, with a macOS theme because I just love the design of it. Main reason for using windows was Skype and Photoshop, but I don't use that anymore and I don't do gaming. I just hope that in terms if development/programming, I will be able to do everything I could on Windows. Laptop I use is Dell inspiron 15 3542 and I think it already sometimes comes pre-installed with Ubuntu, so I guess that's good.
-
Oh God, how I hate a new windows laptop.
The machine just stutter for simple things. I literally spent almost two hours to download a 2 gigs .iso file.
With my speed test as normal as it always was with my previous and slower machine.
The worst part is to install another os.
I struggled to find an option in BIOS to disable Intel's RST. Which was a no no because Ubuntu couldn't understand it's config.
There's an app that comes pre installed to manage these settings. And the sucker didn't have any option to disable. Why? Because It's deprecated!
I spent 5 hours to understand that l needed to access the machine BIOS and activate a hidden option (did you think the option was right there huh?) in order to remove Intel RST.
Oh God how I hate tech monopoly.
Now my machine can breath without shitloads of unused apps and garbage "file checkers" and "anti viruses" that comes pre installed.
And things download super fast without any struggles.9 -

Work has been inefficiently using multiple cron jobs to run php scripts to generate pre-baked data.

Just an advice:
Keep in mind that you can now have ES modules in nodejs with the esm package. And it's a zero config install.
For those that don't know, in js ES modules is the import/export syntax and is a huge upgrade from cjs (the require syntax) because you find out "pre runtime" when a specific import is non existent.1 -

A good way to avoid working for a bad company is that you can spot major problems in the interview and pre-employment phase. There are a number of things that indicate a bad culture that you can ask about right off the bat. Dress code, blocked websites, and work from home policy(or a lack thereof) can all indicate what kind of work environment to expect.
But the biggest one of all is a request for your salary history. If a recruiter or hiring manager wants to know how much you are or were making at a previous job, and will not allow the process to continue without the information, run.
Every job opening has a budget associated with it. The employer already knows what they want to spend on the position. They want to know what your current or previous compensation is or was, so they can perhaps save some money of that budget by offering you a very small amount more than the amount you tell them.
If they ask the question, I get suspicious, but then say, "I'd prefer not to disclose that. What is the budget for the requirement?"
If the person who asks you relents and tells you the budget, then all is well, in my opinion. But if they stick to the subject and insist on getting your salary history, then it indicates a culture of arbitrary subordination, which is not a healthy work environment. If it ever goes this way, I politely tell them that I'm not comfortable disclosing that information, and that I would like to withdraw my interest in the position. -

Hey Guys
So... I Have a question / rant / frustrated commenting to do...
WHY THA FUCK DO FIRMWARE TAKE SO LONG TO UPDATE!!!
been configuring my webserver and 2 p2p cameras to access from the outside, and for each click or change can take 1 to 5 minutes to implement...
And then, like 6 or 7 hours latter I notice that everytime the port wasn't associated, a small label in like size8 text shows that port is already in use...
And... Da FUCK??
I'm associating the ports myself... how can port 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, ... be In use?
I have my server in 80, WebDav e another non relevant port, and trying to find open ports for the p2p cams...
Fuck I'll just delete all that services that no one uses and are pre configured, like, emule? napster? FifaPC? WTF? I never played Fifa, don't like socker. KaZaA SERVER? WTF why does this shit comes pre-configured?
Btw I'm writing this while I wait for the router to finish every time :p7 -

For learning purposes, I made a minimal TensorFlow.js re-implementation of Karpathy’s minGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). One nice side effect of having the 300-lines-of-code model in a .ts file is that you can train it on a GPU in the browser.

Pre 2k i startet making levels in UnrealEd, which changed the way i saw the world. Suddenly i could look at things, buildings, architecture for long times, just thinking how i would build something like that from simple polygons.

So today we had a pre-sprint-planning meeting where the POs told us about the stories currently in the backlog. They went ahead and "roughly prioritised" some of them. Their priorities were:
- normal (but asap please)
- has to be done this sprint, because the feature has to be in the next release (code freeze after this sprint)
- top priority, because this has to be in the previous release (which was released last friday)
The non-normal stories alone are about twice our normal velocity. Good job guys. Good job. -
I was asked to integrate a piece of industrial software which was pre-alpha in a prod to align with corporate objectives. It would have caused all kinds of production problems and instability. Nobody would even notice that it wasn’t there. I procrastinated for eight months until version 1 was released.
I told my manager it was done. Then he informed me that it had been working the whole time and he got plenty of positive feedback so i should roll back to the old version until we can do a planned upgrade. I nodded in agreement and put off the downgrade. -
"hey, you know that help site that our main app users rely on to know wtf is going on?"

Ever come back from a small vacation and arrived to see that the rest of the team had butchered your baby and were trying to stitch it back together, but only succeeded in making it worse?

How do you fit QA inside the weekly sprint?
At the end of a sprint, the team should be able to give something deliverable such as a new release.
How could the developers team integrate their work with the QA team along this week?
I mean, should we test individual features with QA as soon as they’re merged or make a pre-release test with all new features together before releasing? Develop 80% of the time and reserve last 20% for tests?
Could you share something or recommend any links?3 -

Currently I own a Lenovo Thinkpad which I bought in 2013. As it is aging, I'm thinking about a replacement. Where would you buy a new laptop, constraints:
- Swiss keyboard (or Option to swap it for one)
- compatible with Linux (prefered if there's a option without Windows pre instaled)
- NVMe SSD
- good battery live
- abillity to upgrade the RAM in the future
I've been looking at System76 now for a while, but since I've worked with Swiss keyboards for the last 12 years, I don't want to switch to an en_us layout...
So where do you buy your laptops?11 -

Flight Gear.
I had one heck of a time during my pre teen days flying airplanes and going to famous cities around the world in this cool flight simulator game. On a related memory, I think it was in 2008 or something, when Yahoo messenger was the popular thing, I sent a message to one of the main developer about how I can build planes and stuffs for the game. He responded and said something about C++ and some documentations.
This was way before I knew anything about programming. I found myself frustrated about not knowing or understanding any of the guides.
Then puberty happened. -
I gotta say. Zig generics / comptime code gen remind me of old (pre-prototype) JavaScript code where you construct an object using parameters and return that object to be used as a class (except in this case it's actually turned into a class at comptime instead of an object masquerading as class)28

Probably the first time I actually wrote a poc exploit for something we didn't write but were trying to win the maintenance contract for. Mine was quite recent. I discovered that there's no real pre-existing way to create an SQL statement in C# when the number of targeted columns and the number of conditions is not predefined, so I custom built a reusable class that I now keep in my collection of tidbits.

Currently trying to make newer C++11 code run on a gcc 4.8 compiler. Also making Qt 5 code run on Qt 4.8. Reason #69 why I'm considering nuking windows on my main pc.
I had to print something... (I know, why would I want a document to exist in the physical world?)
1. The pc couldn't see the printer, that was connected via USB... Replugging the cable fixed it... How?
2. I had to print images, so I had pre-opened the 9 files. After printing 4 images windows decided to update the imageviewer, closing all the instances and not open them again... Wtf?
So that's how my evening was fucked, how was yours?2 -
After an idea has rolled into the production stage I become bored with it. I no longer want to maintain or even review git issues.
However when even the hint of a new project rolls in I start "pre-developing" in anticipation and excitement of a new project. Development and base design of a project is what keeps me going.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a good pc game to buy (fps, single player and online multiplayer) and I'm considering pre-ordering battlefield 5 since it seems very promising, but it won't be out until 20/11 so if you know any good games please let me know, thanks!12 -
My first words to one fresh graduate , which just started his backend path:
Untested code is a garbage waiting to be collected. Even if some companies / teams somehow manage to do miracles and to work with untested code... that's just a pre-death fantasy of a dying man. -
Have visual studio/android studio pre-opened and updated, grab coffee, comfy headset and put on some synthwave or metal.
An accompanying deadline looms overhead, but we try not to think about that. -
Just spent a day creating a git pre-commit hook to lint file changes before commiting, practically didn't get anything done today except for that script..
Let's see if it's going to be worth every minute I spent. -
New game on steam, Middle-earth.
Showing absolutely no in game footage and asks you to pre-order for some bullwhip award.
Don't pre-order, please kill this type of behavior.
What is it even, rpg, rts?2 -
LINUX MASTERS, I can't believe that linux didn't get rid off yet of the annoying user:group system.
Anyway, I have two pre-existing groups(postgres & www-data), now I need to enable both groups full access to an HD for data storing, currently the owner of /media/"user"/DATA is www-data but I need to enable the postgres group to operate in it.
I seached around and can't get around how to accomplish this, if it's even possible.

had this professor for Formal Methods and Logic who would show up clueless as fuck didn't use the internet to communicate any information. Didn't post notes or anything. Didn't have our quizzes pre-printed and showed up late to a class because he went into the GIANT by campus and was "lost like a monkey staring at shiny objects" (-his words not mine) Also guy didn't know how to teach and said everything was trivial when you would ask questions. He was an asshole and unfortunately tenured.

It's so weird that the avatars of profiles with originally no avatars at all keep changing.
I think that's a feature. Maybe an Halloween feature. Who knows

When I give an upvote to someone from the comment section, the pre commentators and post commentators' ++ action button give a visual feedback. Their font color becomes white and rapidly changes back to a darker tone.1 -

800% markup resellers saying “Pre-Loved” instead of “pre-owned” or “used” is THE peak corporate cringe. I can almost imagine that weak-bodied, arrogant capitalism-as-moralism zealot manager with man-tits ripping a fart and laughing to himself as he invented it. Then he went to twitter to defend elon from sexual assault allegations, and later took his wife and her boyfriend out for husband points.7

Make sure your software does not lose data when improperly quit, and does not allow deletion without a proper confirmation dialogue.
I have experienced pre-installed voice recorder applications that leave behind an unsalvageable corrupt file if the smartphone shuts down due to running out of battery charge, or powers off due to battery undervoltage (as a result of an aged battery).
As often, third-party software beats pre-installed software, and the voice recorder "ASR" by "NLL apps" leaves behind a playable file when unexpectedly quit. Might be because it uses the OGG vorbis format rather than M4A or 3GP audio.
Also, the camera software of the Samsung Galaxy Pocket smartphone from 2012 (which was crap anyway) would discard a video file if the recording was quit through the "back" navigation key.
Perhaps this was done deliberately, but it is a terrible idea due to the possibility of accidents happening.
Some gallery software for Android lets the user delete photos and videos by swiping vertically. After this, a so-called "toast" notification appears with an undo button. If not responded to within seconds, or when tapping next to it due to stress, the photo or video is gone. This is, needless to say, terrible design.2 -

The prerequisites for the MSIngnite 2016 pre-conf session 'Visual Studio and Xamarin' were grossly not complete. Many individual's Visual Studio required the Xamarin/Android/IOS specific updates, no one could open/build the session projects, slow wifi, expectation of Azure account (most didn't). Good content (Andrew and Peirce were great), but a waste of my time.
Any other MSIgniters? Rant on! -
Well, a combination of DXVK, wine and dxvk-cache-pool was used to try and play Path of Exile. The problem seems to be that I can't have any pre-built caches due to them not existing. Seems like a GTX 660 isn't really used anymore and if I want to play a game I will have to have DXVK build its own cache.
Until then, I'm stuck with a stuttery mess of a game due to Path of Exile having a rather many levels. A full playthrough will be necessary until it starts working smoothly.7 -
Working in a company where you can't even have your recent tabs when opening the browser and have the stupid corporate start page. At least there's Session Buddy where you can open a window with yesterday's tabs, but why on Earth would employees not have the possibility to keep the recent tab setting enabled? Especially when it was like this pre-merger.3

After a year working in an office where everyone worked part time (manager 3h, other programmers 5/6h per day) and I was the only full time employee …
… one day the manager told me: “since today is pre-holiday you can go home one hour early as we usually do”
…usually…
… after a year…
… of many pre-holiday days …
you finally felt that it was the time to inform me that I could have spent less hours in that 💩 office?
Well thanks…
[… finally I don’t feel so guilty for going home just 5 minutes after the others left the office because there was nothing to do …] -
Released the product to customers without realising someone had pre-filled a production test accounted login at the login screen. Obviously it was used for testing purposes and the dev forgot to remove it before committing.
I loled when I found out about it, and some customers started to login and made transactions.
When I checked the commit history... It was under my name :/2 -
Currently VSCode just because I am not that into Vim and it supports most languages I have to deal with very well (ReasonML/OCaml, TS, JS).
But when OniVim2 will be completed, that will probably it. I pre-purchased it and the instant startup time while still supporting vscode extensions are already promising.

Not fair! How come Apache gets its modsecurity module pre-compiled and available in public repositories, but Nginx hides it behind a paywall of their "Plus" package/version?
Ugh... At least they provide the module's source, so one can compile and deploy it by himself...6 -
Task on freelancer : There are (too) many adblocker detection plugins. I want you to select one, test it at your local development environment (we will not provide) that it does the following:
- reliably discovers an AdBlocker
- does not interfere with regular ad serving (AdSense) if no AdBlocker is installed at user's browser
****- shows alternate banners (coming from our servers, so they look like regular pictures instead) even when AdBlocker is active *******
OKAY Now reality was that pre thought, pondered by PM ?
anyway adblocks seems doing Acceptable ads* which might be payed for ;)1 -
Quick FAQ for Wroclaw (Wroclove :D) for collaborators from around the world
Poland is in Central Europe, not Eastern (we use Central European Standard Time even). This because Russia is also partially in Europe (not European Union though).
Breslau is Pre-WW2 name for current Wroclaw in Lower Silesia. Don't use it here as it immediately brings bad emotions into the talk and it is not what you want :) Leave nazis in the past.17 -
This was the time when I had Pentium IV with windows 98 brought to my house in early 2000's. In those days games were either pre-installed or were installed by some agent who charged us... So my dad installed two games for me Demon Star and Prince of Persia. For those who dont know POP was initially made for Apple II. I loved those games and they remind me of childhood. Funny but I still have these games in my current desktop. I use it to check if my Nvidia graphic card can handle it 😂.

Why does symfony freezer the container after compiling it? I understand that because of its shit design they require to pre-compile the container because if they didnt their framework would be the slowest piece of shit ever and nobody would use it, but why freeze the parameter bag?
Load the compiled container from the cache, then let me override and set dynamic variables on top if I want, its just a keystore, so it just seems pedantic, unhelpful and utterly pointless2 -

When I got all pre installed PC games blocked in my lab at school because my teacher caught me playing instead of coding(I finished my program well ahead of class. The teacher still hates me, by the way).
To make it up to my now annoyed fellow classmates, I coded 3 games, and also when the teacher left the lab for something, I hacked her system to unblock the games.

Hey, just need a little advice regarding android kernels.
Does anyone know a simple way to download either pre-compiled or source code of stock kernels delivered with phones?

Windows is a shameful dev enviro but when you stuck in Africa, you gotto work with what you have. I dabble in node, R and hadoop and setting up environment and building modules on windows is a walk on hot ash in a desert.
To go around setting up of different dev enviros, i use a windows pre installed hack specially meant for that purpose. A new user account for each dev job. Kips my machine clean and sane while avoiding the blue screen.
After all, who still shares laptops today enough to use different user accounts😂😂1 -

The Future is long in the past and it happened. Don't try to steal it any longer and listen to the truth and match it to whatever the real dates are. Far too much yet to arrive
Stop trying to shape everything into a loopty loo web of idiocy with a decade or more of pre filmed television and movies thanks much
Doesn't look like any of it was being withheld but seems like some of it was filmed far past the supposed date it was released or filmed heh3 -
There are five goofus mfs in my head that tell me terrible, silly solutions, and there's only 1 that is like "yeah maybe you should do that but I'm too lazy to think about it sorry 💁♂️". In my initial days as a web developer, i was assigned a task, to implement a cart share functionality in an e commerce company.
I made the functionality and tested on my system.
Result: working good.
Pushed it to beta testing environment.
Resilt: working good.
Pushed to pre production environment.
Result: working good.
Pushed to live site.
Result: 😀 Error in live site..
So a call comes to me from my team lead..
Asks what was the issue...
Me: i dont know either.
....
After 3-4 hrs:
I found the reason.
My system, beta test env, pre prod env are all having latest php version (5.6 i guess)
But the live server had old version of php.
Me: laughed like anything.
I didn't know that these things would matter in such a great level.
Moral of the story:
Be one with the force (server in this case)2 -
What's your routine for versioning pre-releases?
While working on a big change, like "milestone 2.0", how do you, while working on it, version it before the main release? To keep it being 2.0.0 on release and not for example 2.130.0 (since it was "2.130.0-pre" just before release)?
Or is it my fantasy that when released to public it "should" always be *.0.0?1 -

5 - What are the various categories of pre-defined function interfaces?2 -

I'm a pre-final year student, have recently bagged a summer internship in Microsoft (will begin after 10 months) , since I've got a lot of time in my hand I'm trying to explore the options I have ahead, it could be Enterprenuership, could be Machine Learning, could be open-source, could be research.
I would love to have some career advice, or just your thoughts on how you would choose if given a chance to be at my place, I know it's me who'll have to choose finally, but I'm seriously in need of some help.
Thanks :)2
