Yesterday I met with a potential client who wanted a website. I gave him a quote of X. He said, do this work for X/2 as I have lots of projects and I can keep you engaged for months.
If it was 2 years ago, I'd have happily accepted his proposal. But in the past 2 years I have learned this lesson hard way. Don't work for clients who don't pay well, because when a developer is not paid enough, the quality of work degrades. Hence the portfolio is degraded and so the future projects are also of low budget.
And before you know it, you will be surrounded by low paying clients who see you as a Skilled Labour.
Today, I don't negotiate, not even a single dollar. To justify my cost I make sure that no stones are left unturned while delivery.
It's better to work for 10 hours a week for 40$/hr then to work 40 hours a week for 10$/hr.3 -

> home internet died literally 1 minute before call
> started interview using phone hotspot
> phone hotspot died in 1/3 interview duration
> used mom's phone's hotspot
> died in 2/3 interview duration

> went out to phone company's office to get more data
> half way to the office, mom calls: home internet is working!
> yaay! goes back home
> nop, internet isn't working (glitch in mom's phone which showed it to be working (wifi symbol))
> goes back to the office
> gets phone recharged (office people were SO slow 😑)
> gets back home
> continues and finishes the interview...

Beware, this is gonna be a long one.
Today, in university, our professor wanted us to do an algorithm where a number was given in input, and we had to see if that number was, as she put it, "triangular".
For example:
3 is triangular because it's 1+2.
6 is triangular because it's 1+2+3.
10 is triangular because it's 1+2+3+4.
And so on.
While she was explaining this, I was programming it on my phone (because I didn't bring a PC there).
In about 10 minutes I completed it.
This student who was beside me, which I didn't know until today (I'm still in my first year here), saw me programming it, and when I finished it, he looked at it and said: "It takes too much time, like this."
So he spent another like 5-10 minutes """fixing""" it, and then showed it to me: "Here, now it's better."
Do you want to know what he did?
The only thing he did was putting a for cycle instead of my while cycle.
And he didn't even do it properly!
He put an else statement inside the brackets of an if, and some variables weren't correct.
You call that making a program more efficient? Deficient is more like it.
Also, like 5-10 minutes after I did it on my phone, on my own, I looked at the prof's desk: a guy (who apparently is "the best") wrote his algorithm on the blackboard, and the whole fucking class applauded.
Later, I saw on our Whatsapp group that someone sent a photo of him writing on the blackboard, with the caption "The student surpasses the teacher." Others agreed.
I replied with: "For the record, I did this algorithm in 10 minutes."
An asshole replied: "You'll never be superior to the master"
Fuck off. -.-"
...I'll show them.17 -

Is it “Why is 6 afraid of 7?” or “Why is 10 afraid of 7?”
I fucking said that 6 has not seen the action of 7 eating 9. But 10 has, therefore he is scared.
If we were to iterate from 0 to 10, we would see that 6 hasn’t seen shit.
Let’s print out each number if we iterate through and find a consecutive 7, 8 and 9 then print out “Oh shit 7 ate 9.”

Anyone else having connection problems after the recent Windows 10 update? We've been slammed at work with them. If you do, here's an easy fix:
0. Go to Command Prompt (Run as Administrator)
1. First command:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
(One of them will probably fail, that's fine.)
2. Second command:
netsh winsock reset
3. Restart the computer.13 -

When defining a range, let's say from 1 to 3, I expect:
[1, 2, 3]
Yet most range functions I come across, e.g. lodash, will do:
_.range(1, 3)
=> [1, 2]
And their definition will say: "Creates an array of numbers ... progressing from start up to, but not including, end."
Yet why the fuck not including end? What don't I understand about the concept of a frigging range that you won't include the end?
The only thing I can come up with that's this is related to the array's-indexes-start with-0-thing and someone did not want to substract `-1` when preparing a for loop over an 10 items array with range(0,10), even though they do not want a range of 0 to 10, they want a range from 0 to 9. (And they should not use a for loop here to begin with but a foreach construct anyway.)
So the length of your array does not match the final index of your array.
Bohhoo.
Yet now we can have ranges with very weird steps, and now you always have to consider your proper maximum, leading to code like:
var start = 10;
var max = 50;
var step = 10;
_.range(start, max + step, step)
=> [10, 20, 30, 40, 50]
and during code review this would scream "bug!" in my face.
And it's not only lodash doing that, but also python and dart.
Except php. Php's range is inclusive. Good job php.4 -

Don't go on math but get the gist.
1. 9 of 10 developers are Web developers
2. 9 in 10 developers want to be data scientist
3. 9 out of above actually give up and start doing Web development
4. 9 in 10 developers think CS education is not necessary.
5. 9 in 10 developers want to work for Google Facebook and Microsoft.
6. 9 in 10 developer don't make it to above companies.
7. 9 in 10 developers think design and test are important but never do it.
8. 9 out of 10 developers don't want to code after 5 years and just want to exit industry to non technical roles.
9. 9 out of 10 developers don't get rants and dev memes posted here.

At the cost of the new thing they want to launch in 2 weeks. 🤔 I would love it if we actually had time to fix every single bug in the codebase but what typically happens is I get about 15 bug reports (most duplicates) and I'm expected to fix all of them in a span of 2 hours.1

Define a function where the input is a list of integers. It should find and return all the unique sets of three within the list that sum to x.
For example, given the list [1, 3, 2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15] and with x = 16, the function would return [(10,5,1), (13,2,1)]

At work we have to split a potentially large ID into 2 10-digit long parts that will be passed to an outside system that will later return them with some more data to us.
A colleague had implemented it using regular expression, it passed code review, everything was ok, until he noticed a potential problem. For some cases, because the outside system stores them as int and therefore will remove any leading zeros, there will be no way to reconstruct the number.
So we brainstorm and I propose ether a modified regex, or to just use math like part1 = id % 10^10 and part2 = floor(id % 10^10) and then we can reconstruct it simply by: part2 * 10000000000 + part1
Colleague: - Well, the regex will be faster, there won't be any calculations
Me: - :| I disagree but ok..
We do some more brainstorming and testing and find a case where the proposed new regex fails as well
So I bring up my previous proposal, I explain what exactly it does.
Colleague: - I don't like the math, it has calculations, which won't be needed before we reach the 11th digit
Have I missed some major development in computer hardware? When did they become bad/slow at doing math? :|8 -

I am living my dream.
I have a nice fam, enough capital, a job I enjoy, I'm enjoying the life in this world every day now. And yesterday I caught myself in a moment that 10 years ago I thought only happens in movies. An engineer participating in a meeting with the client while riding on a motorcycle.
I mean, how cool is that! It may not seem like much now, because it was a necessity - I had to be at 2 places at once. But a 10 years younger me would wet his pants if he knew I would one day be doing that IRL.
How about you? How would a 10 years younger you feel about the _now_ you?4 -

"This semester I will take more time for my personal projects"
Week one, having to organize all the uni stuff
Week 2-4, too much homework, no time
Week 5-7, fucking midterms
Week 8-9, too much homework
Week 10, finally time to relax a bit. Probably not going to work on my project. Fuck my time planning, fuck the day for only having 24h.2 -

Why do you take TWO FUCKING HOURS!! To install a god damn UPDATE????
Your update system makes NO DARN SENSE.

Okay but whys no one talking about w3js? Its not a complete overhaul of the entire frontend shit, it doesnt introduce fucked up concepts, it literally just abstracts away those 10 functions everyone creates a function for in the first 2 minutes either way, its actually useful.1

2 job offers on table.
One, where I'd to work on multiple technologies, comfortable timing i.e 6 - 7 hours a day. Enough time to do personal projects.
Other, I'd to work on single technology stack, but more complex and large projects. Good for architectural and design pattern knowledge. Better pay, but stressing work hours like 8-10 hours daily. Might be on weekends as well.
Help me out!18 -
So we have an internal license server for intellij.
Installed idea, tried to connect to license server. It wouldn't connect.
Got at least, 10 devs and the admin to look at the problem. No one could find why it was not connecting.
After full 2 hours someone got the idea, came to my laptop and fixed it. Turns out windows firewall was blocking all requests from intellij.
Fuuuuuuuck5 -
As a kid when I was coding I used building blocks and I used some yesterday for Lego robotics at a science center and I felt really dumb because over 2 years since I was 10 I used actual code like typing it and it feels much better than blocks and just over all building blocks just make me feel so stupid😵2

When you’re trying to write a function to convert a base 10 integer to a base 2 integer in Javascript without using parseInt() and it takes you a while to realize that you’re used to integer division being integer division and have forgotten that JavaScript stores numbers as double precision floating point. *facepalm*1

Here is mine.
So I have been working on a project for 2 months now at my company. Briefly, I describe it as the WordPress of the surveys (create, edit, share, tons of features). Last day, I had to implement one last feature in order to make everything working and as similar as possible with the final product. I had 10 minutes to do it (had to go home) and I was like "Tomorrow bro". Believe it or not, 10 minutes was what it took me to end this fckin' project, and go home on time like "Good job Man, relax it's friday now" :)
Thanks for reading ! -
I'm not joking when I say how dumb I am. Like, for example, yesterday, me and a friend had to figure out how much is 15×6. He did it by doing 10×6 + 5×6, that's 2 "×"s and a single "+", dead simple, right? Yep. Me? I did it 5×3×3×2... Which, ok, is 9×10, but do you think I can do 9×10? Nope, to me 9×10 is the result 🤌🏻 that's how much of a door knob I am8

2) Just let it drop about 10-20% and charge it immediately up, and unplug it, when it reaches full charge15 -

I had to reinstall windows because (hear me out) an old webcam, so old I used to use it for Messenger when I was like 8, couldn't get its drivers right for Windows 10 64 bits.
Not 100% tested, but I'm 88.9% sure it was that what corrupted my OS.
After reinstalling, I had to look up the model (super generic but distinctive enough to make me search for a whole 2 hours), learnt a lot (wow) and now it's... let's call it working.
Now I have to reinstall the 6 programs and 10 games I had that could be worse but still, damn.7 -
This week I delivered a big feature (took me about 2 weeks), QAs tested it yesterday results in about 10 Jira issues. Trying to convince the class that test-driven development + DTSTTMPW ("do the simplest thing that might possibly work") + pair programming is the way to go, our software dev prof had us split in groups of two that would each get a turn to
1. add a unit test
2. edit the code so it passes the test
3. commit the change
The goal was to write a java class that converts integers to roman numerals.
Each group had only 2 minutes before the prof made them revert their changes.
After 45 minutes the code was just 10 lines of this:
if ( n == 1 )
return "I";
else if ( n == 2 )
return "II";
else if ( n == 3 ) ... -

When I was 12 i had a Friday afternoon course, as they called it, in QBasic. Nothing fancy but I learned that 'I wanted to work with computers'.
10 years later I got my first programming job. It was with the old Cognos Powerhouse language on OpenVMS. Does anyone remember that?
I had that job for 4 years and it took me another 10 (and several other IT jobs) before I started to learn Java, which I do now for 2 years.
That's my career story in a tiny nutshell 😎 -
Windows 11 kinda defeated me (although probably by my own fault of installing it on unsupported hardware).
I’ve been having horrible input lag whenever my system has been doing something CPU intensive - gaming, even copying files, to the point where I would have 2 second delay between key input and key being registered by the system.
I reverted back to Windows 10.3 -
!rant, but maybe useful tip for someone:
if you like listening to something while falling asleep, but dislike the idea of your pc being needlessly on through the whole night:
1. cmd
2. shutdown -t 3600 -s
(replace the number with seconds (up to 10 years =D) you want the computer to shut down after)7 -
Why does every Monitor with a high resolution have such a wide format, like 16:9 or worse? As a developer i need more vertical than horizontal space. 9:16 is ok for coding but too small for anything else. I want a Monitor which is 2:3, 3:4 (rotated 3:2 or 4:3) or 1:1 and has at least 1920x2560. The better the resolution the more lines can i see at once. I can't make the text smaller than 10 pixel per line.
Do you guys have the same problem?12 -
I have been experimenting with Docker and reading articles on it. I was wondering what are best practices for building Docker images. Many articles have recommended that use Alpine base images because they're small and more secure.
Let us say that my application needed Postgre. What is the best approach?
1. Use the Alpine Dockerfile provided [here](https://github.com/docker-library/...) at Github. Download the file and go to where its located in my terminal and enter *"docker build"*
2. Creating a Dockerfile from scratch and using the command *"FROM postgre:10-alpine"*
3. Use the Alpine template file provided [here](https://github.com/docker-library/...)2 -

Whoops, my head will be squashed tomorrow. Asked to put monitoring in other week by boss, sysadmin been complaining about high CPU, apparently 10 requests (different domains) to the one VM on our servers every 10 seconds is killing it. However this server is being used for MySQL and serving web requests by Apache and PHP. Then also running a few jobs like consuming queues etc.
Wtf do I do? Every time I tell him about more resources (we have decent 2 rack servers just running 20 vms and only 1 VM is for web sites) he says software should be made to work with what we have.1 -

I am thinking this way( it is so secure that you received otp only after it is expired).😅1 -
>making bruteforce MD5 collision engine in Python 2 (requires MD5 and size of original data, partial-file bruteforce coming soon)
>actually going well, in the ballpark of 8500 urandom-filled tries/sec for 10 bytes (because urandom may find it faster than a zero-to-FF fill due to in-practice files not having many 00 bytes)
>never resolves
>SOMEHOW manages to cut off the first 2 chars of all generated MD5 hashes
>fuck, fixed
>implemented tries/sec counter at either successful collision or KeyboardInterrupt
>implemented "wasted roll" (duplicate urandom rolls) counter at either collision success or KeyboardInterrupt
>...wait
>wasted roll counter is always at either 0% or 99%
>spend 2 hours fucking up a simple percentage calculation
>finally fixed
>implement pre-bruteforce calculation of maximum try count assuming 5% wasted rolls (after a couple hours of work for one equation because factorials)

If we don't count gaming there are 2 different categories of laptops; consumer and business.
Business laptops are better quality and more durable than consumer laptops. That's just a fact. Therefore the extra cost.
Now my question: Does Microsoft 'favor' business laptops in terms of Windows 10 and Windows 10 updates?
Because I have a business model laptop and since the beginning Windows 10 worked flawless and still does and I never had any problems despite running mutiple programs and services.
While some of my friends have consumer laptops and they are complaning day in day out about their Windows is always updating and programs always crashing.
So does Microsoft 'favor' business models in terms of Windows 10 updates and stability or am I just lucky?3 -

Windows 10 died. Beyond restore. Beyond system reset. It has been exactly 6 months and 2 days. Thank God I have fucking Ubuntu double boot...

I wished to not procrastinate
God gave me a life so busy I don't have time to.
(3 internship deadlines in 10 days, 2 colg project deadlines and 2 hackathons next week)3 -
I just bought a Pixel 2 so I can have live captions...
Apparently it has Android 10 support as well...
Why didn't I think of this earlier.... Though apparently support was only added in December. But just $100... And well I had a 60$ gift card balance left so that can't out to $40. (And it's only a 3yr old phone... Amazing how fast prices drop)
Actually I ordered a 3a first but then found out pixel 2 can do it as well... but now I'll have 3 phones...
OP1 (sitting in drawer unused for a few years), OP6, Pixel 2.
Guess I'll finally have an unrooted phone though I can use for all those apps I can't hide root from...1 -
Some day ago I ranted that I needed to program Angular2 but my keyboard didn't have the ` symbol.
Now I decided to remap the useless £ to `. I wasted like 2 hours but it seems that doesn't exist any way to do it. I downloaded like 10 application but nothing, I can't remap a second-function key.
Oh my god, who invented the italian keyboard needs to burn in the hell10 -
So, today I found an old pair of jeans which I had bought 10 years ago. To my surprise, it fits just fine even though I've added a little more than 2 inches to my waistline over the time.
Some things grow along with you. :-)
Celebrating with a grand pot of elderflower lemon tea! -
We have 2 sites. I, dev, set the https system for one in 10 minutes. The sys admin has been working on it for two hours already and he doesn't want help2

How do you keep shared libraries used by multiple microservices in sync?
For example, a model class in a shared lib used by some of your microservices. If a new field is added, how would you quickly identify which microservices need to be updated, redeployed? And do it quickly.
Or say the model library has many classes, used by different services. 1 class changed, and only 2/10 services reference it. Do you target only three 2 or so of them? Or would those be bad design?21 -
We are a small team. 2 developers and our leader. We spend our day trying to fix the issues and for troubleshooting and our leader, who just send excel sheets, talk with the client, assign his tasks to us and watch series at Netflix complaints if we work only 10 hours per day....WTF?3

In JS/Node, is there a performance and memory cost to nested functions?
I.e.
function handle(req, res)
{
var x = 5, y = 10;
function add() { return x + y; }
function multi() { return x*y; }
res.send(add() + multi());
}
As opposed to taking out the 2 functions and making them accept x,y as parameters.6 -
Learning vue and it's lovely, except FUCKING V-MODEL I'm literally 10 hours of tutorials in and I still have no clear idea what the thing does, I'm pretty sure it's like 2/10 complexity thing but someone just HAD TO name it V-MODEL so that it doesn't give you a slightest hint of the actual functionality, like you might as well have named it v-cable or v-oompaloompa, it would have the exact same information value (none).3

A wild random shitcode my coworker wrote 2 years ago appeared
var thingsToCheck = new List<String>();
foreach (var thing in thingsToCheck)
{
// 10 lines of logic
}
Random shit code used confusion. It's super effective.
But honestly, these were the only few lines in his checkin. We still try to figure out what he thought when writing this. -
Did any of you managed to pull off 2 fulltime positions while working remotely? What was your experience? Im working in one job where I have standups late in the evening and in a given week I work maybe max 10 hours. Im thinking of finding another fulltime job.7

to me, "var a" is unorthodox. i'd rather use switch(expectedOutput){case 1:a=1;break;case 2:a=2;break;case 3:a=3;break;case 4:a=4;break;case 5:a=5;break;case 6:a=6;break;case 7:a=7;break;case 8:a=8;break;case 9:a=9;break;case 10:a=10;break;case 11:a=11;break;case 12:a=12;break;case 13:a=13;break;case 14:a=14;break;case 15:a=15;break;case 16:a=16;break;case 17:a=17;break;case 18:a=18;break;case 19:a=19;break;case 20:a=20}1

Momentum and flow state is such a magical thing, like compound interest. I started off the Phoenix Project with like 2 or 3 chapters per day. But in the last two days I read like 15 chapters (5 chapters + 10 chapters) and finished the book.2

Why are they cancelling M82 and ditching all development on it? Why not just release M82 later or make M83 m82??? Wtf5 -
It is sometimes shocking to see 10+ developers working on a fairly big project (online quiz). Missing data binding operations here and there, as a result, bunch of sql injections, which successfully led to the entire db full of questions and answers sitting on my desktop.
Vulnerabilities have been reported, took them 2 weeks to understand what happened and fix them.
Pretty sad :/1 -
If I code 10 to 1 or 2 I can have good sleep..but in any case if I sleep eaely before 1 then code snippet and bugs come in dreams.........
..
Even if I sleep early when I'm too tired.. -
Have any of you windows 10 users spotted, that the x^2 button on the standard calculator is slightly bigger by a few px to the left side than the other ones?? 😁 Not sure whether this has been discussed before or not 🙂1

I have a laptop with 8gb ram, 1Tb HDD, i5 7th gen running windows 10 and Ubuntu. Right now I'm using windows 10 as my primary OS, I'm simply addicted to the gestures especially the four finger swipe to switch desktops. I have been thinking of adding an SSD to the mix and my budget only permits a 120gb M.2 or a 250gb normal ssd.
The advantage with m.2 is that I can keep my HDD and boot my OS from the ssd and maybe install my IDEs on there but with the other ssd I'm gonna have to take my HDD out and use it as an external.
I read somewhere that 250gb above SSDs are the ones worth spending money on and that the 120 and 250 doesn't justify the price or life.
So my question is, should I go for an SSD? and if I do which one to go for m.2 or the normal one?3 -
Am I the only one who thinks those wk questions have to go away or should change since they have nothing to do with ranting? DevRant is growing and growing but since everyone is answering those questions only like 2/10 posts are proper rants.
Would be awesome if those questions are made so that people start rant about it.3 -
Had to do something with Xcode for a while now. After 2 hours my tolerance for strange errors, which are solved with cleaning build folder or closing/re-opening the IDE, is used up for the next 10 years...

Why are USB passkeys so expensive? I was under the impression that you 1) create a key pair, upload the public key to your google account and 2) store the private key on an old USB drive. But nooo, then you could copy the key I guess. Good luck convincing the average Joe to spend more than $10 on a fido/yubi/whatever key...3

Building atom on an RPI 2 with this fuckstickle of a package manager is a bloody nightmare. Works without issue on Raspbian Jessie, implodes into a spectacular clusterfuckeroni on Raspbian Stretch.
Been on it since yesterday, 10/10 weekend saved. -
At my company they have this legacy system that's been around for a good 10 years now. The company told me they plan to break away from the legacy system, and this was 2 years ago. The reason that nothing has changed is because anyone that knows the legacy system have already left, and there's one service that relies on it. That team absolutely refuses to break away from it so everyone is stuck where they are. Given the attitude of the company employees, I'm pretty sure this legacy system will be around for another 10 years.

Release was supposed to start at 10 am, its now 11am but our release document is being debated heavily. The outage is scheduled to last until 2 and we thought we'd be tight for time when starting at 10 FML to right now..

I have a function that receives 2 parameters: a string and a max numer of characters.
It returns an array with the partitioned string.
Example:
function name("hi, I love devRant", 10);
//return:
array(2){
[0] ->"hi, I love"
[1] ->" devRant"
}
Now.... what would be the appropriate name for that function?10 -
Sooo...
In the last hour this piece of shi ehm I mean wonderful piece of technology named Winshit 10 gave me 2 BSODs and one complete freeze. It always ran without any problems but in the last time it slowly began to really really suck. -
Luxary dilemma. I'm just finishing up my studies and got 2 job openings going on. They are about the same salary but very different companies. What should i think about for my future like CV and other stuff? What would benefit me the most knowledge wise. Or any other recomendations starting as a developer?
Opening 1:
Smaller company "10-15 people" that develops apps and plugins for CRM systems. C# fullstack.
Opening 2:
Big player in the car industry with 1000+ employees. Java backend. -
The entire AppSync/Amplify SDK for android is a shitfest. The support engineers don't know what the devs are doing, and the devs don't give 2 shits. It shouldn't take 10 fucking hours to configure an existing API and Auth to work with an app and then run into issues with the code that the fucking SDK generates. Fucking buffoons
