My dad bought a used Commodore VIC-20 when I was a baby. By the time I was 3 and my brother was 4 we spent hours typing our choose your own adventure book into basic to pass the winter days. We couldn’t even read at first so we copied letter by letter.
We learned to load and save a program to the tape drive.
We learned to print text, to collect input, and to go to new pages. Pages were line numbers followed by extra zeroes so we could have multiple print lines for paragraphs.
Then we got my dad read the screen output when he got home from work. We made a lot of spelling and text mistakes.
