Tips for people new to programming
1. Start counting from zero
2. Trees are upside down, root's probably at the top
3. Warnings are usual, go rogue!
What more? 😂34 -
Windows: Copying 2,513 items from <here> to <here>.
Me: OK.
Windows: 84% complete.
Me: OK.
Windows: Shit.
Me: What?!
Windows: "Copying" dialog box is not responding.
Me: Fuck you.
Windows: Well, yeah, sorry.
Me: Fuck you.
Windows: Do something else until it unfreezes.
Me: OK.
.

.
Me: Fuck you. Everything's stuck. Can't click anywhere.
Windows: You can still use your mouse, though.
Me: Yeah, I guess. Wait a second, it's also stuck. The whole thing is frozen as ice.
Windows: What about keyboard?
Me: I said, THE WHOLE FUCKING THING!
Windows: Well, sorry?
Me: FUCK YOU!!20 -

A few days ago a friend of mine rang me up complaining about internet issues with his computer. As usual I did the "is it plugged in, turn it off then on again" sort of thing to waste time while my pasta was cooking. After a while he asked if I had another bogus solution, so I suggested flushing his toilet.
He runs off, I hear the flush, comes back and viola - it fucking worked.
The point of this is: if it don't work, flush the toilet. You're welcome, tech support out ✌️11 -
Hello! Is this Gordon’s Pizza?
No sir, it’s Google’s Pizza.
Did I dial the wrong number?
No sir, Google bought the pizza store.
Oh, alright - then I’d like to place an order please.
Okay sir, do you want the usual?
The usual? You know what my usual is?
According to the caller ID, the last 15 times you’ve ordered a 12-slice with double-cheese, sausage, and thick crust.
Okay - that’s what I want this time too.
May I suggest that this time you order an 8-slice with ricotta, arugula, and tomato instead?
No, I hate vegetables.
But your cholesterol is not good.
How do you know?
Through the subscribers guide. We have the results of your blood tests for the last 7 years.
Maybe so, but I don’t want the pizza you suggest – I already take medicine for high cholesterol.
But you haven’t taken the medicine regularly. 4 months ago you purchased from Drugsale Network a box of only 30 tablets.
I bought more from another drugstore.
It’s not showing on your credit card sir.
I paid in cash.
But according to your bank statement you did not withdraw that much cash.
I have another source of cash.
This is not showing on your last tax form, unless you got it from an undeclared income source.
WHAT THE HELL? ENOUGH! I’m sick of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. I’m going to an island without internet, where there’s no cellphone line, and no one to spy on me …
I understand sir, but you’ll need to renew your passport … it expired 5 weeks ago.16 -
As usual, I woke up at 6, got ready and did all my usual stuff.
Then at 6:15 I was beautifying my Python script because the code was unattractive.
I swear it took 5 minutes! No more than five minutes, but when I checked the time it was 7:10! Why must this happen all the time?
It's just like when I'm sleeping. I'll wake up, close my eyes for two seconds, and then it's magically been an hour.31 -
Had a database engineer tell me that he put a minimal delay of 15 seconds on every query, so that people don't come complaining to him that the database takes longer than usual4
-
When one of the newest developers submits code that looks 100x better than his usual stuff and you respond "You need to include the link to where you got this"3
-
My ISP advertises themselves as IT-nerds. I once contacted the support, not tech support, just the usual support. I wanted to use my own router instead of theirs, and the supporter actually knew how I should configure my vlan and a lot of other technical stuff.
Why aren’t all ISP’s like mine?8 -
Finally got around to installing Arch on an actual machine 😀
I went for deepin since i wanted to try something new. I didn't go for any WMs since the whole concept seems complicated to me but i wanna look into it someday.
Anyways, super happy so far. I boot in < 5s from hitting the power button which is super dope ♥️ ♥️. I did have some weirdness with nvidia drivers (as usual on linux lol) but reinstalling it fixed it.40 -
Pop (onomatopoeia) : The sound your managed gigabit switch makes when you accidentally plug it into the power supply of your 48-volt power-over-Ethernet switch instead of its usual 9-volt supply.13

Is it usual to not be allowed to use headphones/earbuds at work?
We cant at our offfice atleast. The explination was that IF clients come by the offfice it looks like we are having a lan party! 😂21 -
Finding the bug. The usual flow:
"Omg! I think it's a bug in the compiler"
10 minutes later:
"OK, it surely is a bug in the runtime"
20 minutes later:
"I'm certain this is a bug in the core library"
2 hours later:
"Oh, it's a bug in my code. Again, as usual, I'm the idiot. Stupid world."1 -
Ever tried "CodeGolf" on StackExchange?
https://codegolf.stackexchange.com
I did it for a while and had some fun.
Until it became the usual dick-measuring contest that is StackExchange.
"Have you tried...?"
Bitch did I ask for your help?
The final straw for me was when it became obvious that people were checking to make sure I hadn't lied about my character count. Then someone downvoted my answer after I misinterpreted the question.
That was it for me, fuck y'all.
This C# Christmas Tree was my highest voted answer, approx 1 year ago. (Hope the gif works.)6 -
Fucking moronic clients like these make me want to drop the project, needless to say I dropped the project immediately. I know it's highly unethical but fuck it.
On top of that I was doing charity work by charging 1/8th of my usual rate and this fucking idiots thinks that he is teaching/spoonfeeding me for his project, moron, I made micro library for that much amount of money.
Loss is loss and integrity is integrity..15 -
@JoshBent suggested that I'd make a blog about security.
Nice idea, fair enough!
*registers domain at provider with discounts at the moment*
*tries to find whois protection option*
"You can add WHOIS protection to your account as an upgrade"
*requests authorization token*
*logs into usual domain name provider account*
*transfers domain name*
*anonymizes WHOIS details within two seconds*
I could've stayed and ask them about the cost etc but the fact that they even HAVE a price for protecting WHOIS data is a no-go for me.
Fuck domain name resellers which ask money for protecting ones WHOIS information (where possible).35 -
When I find a video tutorial I like,
"Hey! I might actually watch this in normal speed instead of the usual 2x".5 -
First day at new job yesterday, and it was really enjoyable, it's nice to be at a place that is actually competent at software development. I actually have people I can turn to who are tons more experienced than me.
Aside from the usual orienteering, I spent my time examining their existing systems and wrapping my head around the project I'll be working on for my trial period.
People seem friendly, coffee is good, they know what they're doing, willing to experiment and try new things, and I will get a free mac book pro as an employee.
Hope I get this.3 -

As usual finished the task just an hour before demo meeting. That hour is for transportation. Obviously I didn't test nor rehearse.
As usual, in to 2 mins of demo and greeted by error page.
As usual
1) stay the fuck calm
2) this features was already demo-ed and fixed and went fine few weeks ago
3) what the fuck happen now
4) stay the fuck calm, smile.
5) "ah please give me one minute, I forgot to clean up some stuff while working on new features"
6) shit shit. read the error message and log
7) oh I did refactor some files last week. Reorganized the files and folders for better structure and easier understanding. Thought I corrected every occurrences. Obviously I missed few.
8) ssh to the server while screen is still showing on projector
9) dig into the file quick
10) stay the fuck calm
11) fix
12) refresh
13) sorry all good, so I was saying ....
Well finally it's done for today and going back to office. After all it went ok. 👌2 -
++-ing a random rant from the feed is like a one night stand whereas subscribing to a user's rant is like a long term relationship!56

I had just started learning the MERN stack and they deprecated it yesterday. Perfect timing, as usual.13

I just switched jobs, so there are no vacation days for me, besides the usual.
PM: "Are you returning for work on January 2nd?"
Me: "Yeah, but I'm kinda new at the company here, so I'll be available 26-28 if you want to reach me"
PM: "Screw those days. Nobody will be here anyways, you can take those off for me."
Me: "(cries in Spanish)"5 -
What's with the 4 pixel wide scrollbars on some desktop software these days? Does nobody care about accessibility anymore?
No seriously.
Fuck you.
And why the fuck does open source software seem to be the main culprit - as usual.
And tutorials telling us to add an extra blank line to our source code because fucking Linux distros decide to put an overlay horizontal scrollbar just over the top of where the last visible line in an editor appears.8 -
Adventures in security land, part II:
I’m getting pulled off the security review team and instead relegated to part-time security tickets alongside my usual dev work. (So, someone else finds them, i fix them.)
Guess I found and debated too many problems with the lead dev’s code. 🙄13 -
Dear Apple
I'm using AppLoader, a tiny app with only one thing to do: Upload IPA (app) file to your servers, please explain WHY THE FUCK IT TOOK 4.5GB RAM TO DO A SIMPLE TASK!
Dafuq is wrong with these guys -.-6 -
Sandev. The santa dev.
If you are a nice dev, he makes your code work... If you are a naughty dev, he fills it with bugs.
If you are an immensely naughty dev, he disables all browsers except for an older version of IE, rm -rfs your linux distro, and magically makes android studio eat up more ram than usual.7 -
Learning to code at the University was quite annoying in the beginning. We had to write code on paper.
Might be the usual way, yet it was really inconvenient.25 -
Do NOT "compress" your code by leaving out braces in control structures and putting the 300 char statement on the same fucking line as the control structure!
Yes, your code file becomes vertically shorter than the usual 3000 lines, BUT my brain tumor proportionally grows larger.7 -
Why do users find it so hard to understand short and clear error messages that are in place to inform them what's going wrong? Why do they instead waste my time when the message clearly says that the password is too short and hasn't got any special characters? FFS!4

Dev slump.
For me dev slump is usually feeling overwhelmed and that leads to being unmotivated.
My solution usually involves, go slow, way slower than usual. "Make function... that takes a thing. well that worked..." rather than try to think of everything at once.
Also get some easy tasks broken out and do those (even unrelated). That tends to get me going, feeling productive, then I start to approach the harder stuff that was maybe more demoralizing.2 -
The knitted Minecraft creeper my girlfriend made for me. More incentive to figure out bugs compared to the usual rubber duck...5
-
So... Facebook canceled our plugin since we did not update it to newer version.
Fine.. I'm fine with that. There was no time for that since there's was some very very very fucking important projects, tasks and side requests requested by administration for customers that are actually not real customers since they don't pay or have a contract yet (or ever will!)
Administration... Wtf our plugin is not
working?! We are receiving complaints from (paying) customers!!
Me. Since you assumed the team leading and revoked my rights on leading the team we are doing shittttt work for non paying customer...
Administration... Resolve FB issue then do non paing customer work. Hum! bether otherwise.. No, otherwise. No. Do both ASAP
Me. Sure! It's Friday, I'm overtime already by 10h at lunch time,. So I'm fuck off outa here and pick up on whatever I'm keen to on Monday morning after guide the other colleagues on the crapp you dropped on them with your seagull managent!
This means I might start on Wednesday!
Xau3 -
Really just an average week.
Just feel I need a bit of venting. (:
@meet: (monday)
- mgr: we need video transcoding and VOD ASAP.
- dev: on what server? It's expensive, especially without a GPU.
- mgr: prod is beefy. Put it there.
- dev: everything else is gonna crawl then.
- mgr: you have till the end of this week.
@demo (Friday)
- dev: k, it's ready.
- mgr: Why is everything slow??!
- dev: transcoding. Expensive.
- mgr: Why do we transcode? Never said I wanted transcode!
Can't we upload to YT?
- dev: ...yes. But will then each customer that wants VOD will need to setup YT studio and provide an endpoint and stream key.
- mgr: OK. But we're now behind schedule because of this and the customers will not be pleased.
- dev: oh, didn't know we're into gaming.
- mgr: ???
- dev: nvm, see you Monday.
...
Later Friday evening
...
*ding* mgr has added 5 new tasks to your list.
*ding* mgr subtracted 30 points from you.
reason: deadline over due.
Ya ya, the usual shenanigans.
Time to mute for the weekend.14 -
When the university finds out you're a pentester:
Usual underclassmen: Can you hack my bf/gf? I think they're cheating on me.
Delusional underclassmen who think they know everything: I can hack too! Who's your master? I learned how from master jimmy *runs a batch script that has "tree" on loop. See? What batch script do YOU have?"
The IT teachers: can you show us how a payload works?4 -
Why the absolute fuck do I need to have nvidia membership to download cudnn? What evil do these mofos think people achieve with free access to a fucking programming tool?
Jesus on a bike! I nag about open science and all I end up with is always these spying morons, who purposefully disable scientists. Fuck!
If👏you👏need👏my👏info,👏then it's👏not👏free.👏17 -
So what do you guys do when you're bored?
My friends : Browse Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, read some blogs maybe..
Me : Browse through the Arch Linux wiki... I mean,... you know Twitter, Reddit, the usual..6 -
Hey, how about we boost our dev team morale by giving them this cool project instead of these usual crud bullshit they deal everyday?
Nooo, let's pay some fucking amateur agency 5x they wage during 4 months to do it like a low IQ noob and expect them to maintain it later.1 -
My wife saw me posting on Dev Rant raging about my boss, and suggested I ought to use a different user name instead of my usual one... considering he spends all day using social media I think she might be right... passed the advice on to some friends we are all now paranoid and have new accounts. <32

Just looked at my emails for the first time since 23rd (self imposed blackout to get some rest) and found an email chain from a co-worker and a client.
At 5.30pm on Fri 23rd (half an hour after our usual quitting time) we got an email from a client who has taken 2 years to write content for their 10-page website, asking us if we could push the website live.
My colleague succinctly replied with "No. Best Regards, [name]" and then replied to just the company with a photo of him grinning and holding a beer.
Merry Christmas! -
My most awkward interview experience:
I go through the whole process Witt my usual attitude: stay relaxed, be open and let it be a process about meeting each other.
My interviewer at the end of it: "we won't hire you, you are too relaxed and don't fear me enough."
Ooookay? Glad I didn't pass it then!10 -
For shits I opened myh spam box in gmail. There was a flood of spam from dating.lt . I wanted to just go over there and see if I somehow have an account in there. And delete it if possible.
But when I tried to log in with my usual "spam credentials" -- this hapened3 -
Customer: Do you need my computer password?
Me: Yes, I do. Why don't you write it down for me? *fills out work order form while she writes down her password*
Customer: Here you go *slides me sticky note with password on it*
Me: *usual spiel about computer repair stuff*
Customer: *leaves*
Me: *to Coworker* So this lady's password is "AmishForLife* (modified for security purposes).
Coworker: On her iPad?!
Me: And her computer, yes
Coworker: *laughs*
Me: I wonder how well that's working out for her... -

I gained 20+ kilos during covid.
By now I have lost about 19 of those. And no, I didn't do any specific sports or diet. I lost them via ✨anxiety✨.
And yes, I am naturally skinny.
I still have a good 20 to lose to be back at my ""usual"" weight tho. ✌️ (Gained those thanks to depression, hormonal disorder, and related meds)28 -
I had defined a variable earlier, 'count', that I was trying to access later on in the code. Kept getting errors that the variable didn't exist.
When I looked, I had actually named it 'cunt'.
Best typo ever, gave me a good laugh as opposed to the usual annoying typos in programming.1 -
I was talking to my friend, and she told me she started learning to code,
I said it's nice, and asked what language she learns,
she said she learns the "usual" language,
I explained to her that just like natural language there is no single "usual" language.
Then she said she learns this language where the text is colorful.7 -
Apple at it again.
The new iPad mini suffers from "jelly scroll", and Apple tries to gaslight its customers into believing that this is normal.
No Apple, this is not normal. It's you. You and your shitty engineering, your shitty testing (too much secrecy, hence too few testers), your shitty marketing, and your shitty customer service. You are shitty as usual.
(Reference article: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/... )7 -
My company’s code base is so messy that the dev branch and master branch is so buggy. But they put the blame on me as usual.
I use git blame, I wasn’t the author .7 -
I just switched up my temperature sensors and attached a TMP36 in place of the usual DS18B20.
I did my usual pinout and turned on my Pi, then compiled Python3.6 because I needed it for asyncio.
Ten minutes later when I entered my room again, my Pi was fried and the sensor was smoking.
FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKK5 -
So the vacation mood wore off very quickly and the usual nobody will understand or nobody can accept me mood got activated.15
-
Two of my team members were trying to make a website responsive for over an hour. They tested everything. They checked the JavaScript, checked their CSS media queries, tried everything but it just wouldn't work on mobile browsers.
So as usual they decided it was "impossible" due to "WordPress constraints" and told me that it would work on the browser but not desktop.
I just added the meta viewport tag. It literally took 10 seconds. It worked.
I hate people who give up easily. Just hate it.2 -
I once ran a batch import job to stress test with much more data than usual in staging... so I thought.
I sshd into prod by accident. History search can be a bastard at times...
The moment I realized what I was doing was crazy. I was shivering and thought I get fired if anything went wrong.
fortunately I just duplicated the original data for the test, and the system was built to ignore unnecessary updates... so the data was correct and nothing went wrong.
Not an active stupid dev choice but still something I will remember for a while. -
!rant !!question !!rantNow
Stackoverflow and the internets has failed me, so I thought maybe someone here could throw a pointer 🤞
Has anyone managed to get a hackintosh working in VirtualBox 5 with a decent screen resolution beyond 1024x768?
I’ve tried the usual vboxmanager ways of setting the gopMode and customRes but the damn thing won’t budge.
I’m starting to think VMWare may be the way to go for this thing😪2 -
Search the company on Facebook, the internet, to see some pictures of the offices at an usual workday.
Don't come too overdressed to a job interview, if the employees all wear casual clothes.4 -
Let's start by saying: God do I love programming and hate work!
My dream job would be a place where I get to write quality code for something that's actually useful and makes sense to people (or a group of people) without all the usual job bullshit; all the politics, fucking useless hours of meetings, the pretentious ass holes, and the useless mindless product owners with good pay to live comfortably and some organization (not being a complete disaster). It's only a dream though...5 -
Damn, it's quite refreshing to work on some C#.NET microservices instead of the usual PHPTSD in the CMS Of Doom™...4
-
Opened GitHub as usual today, somehow found my old repositories (created when I was a fresher). Opened them and felt why I'm still on this earth, pulled them, restructured all of them, pushed them back and now I can sleep!! 😴
-
We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:
#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.1 -
I walked into the office.
Following the usual morning words spit out, more undead then awake.
"Good morning, jada, jada."
I'm placing my backpack on my desk.
Now opening the case with the notebook.
I grab the notebook as usual.
*crack*
Shit.
Now I'm holding the battery pack in hands. My notebook still chills in my backpack.
FUCKING FUCK SHIT WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? CURSES ON THE MANUFACTURER OF THAT PIECE O' SHIT!2 -
How the hell did I go a full day with no coffee?
I had my usual three hours of sleep, did nothing else out of the ordinary, so how did I get through the day without any coffee whatsoever? And why am I still up at 1am?6 -
As usual, Friday is boring day. I made a React component to show an exclamation mark base on absolute value from a list. Took me 15 mins. The rest of 1 hour we discussed where and what color should I use. 🤦♂️ Someone nearly flip the table...2
-
I found it yesterday that 6 and null is false and 4 is true in our database in addition to a previous rant. I went to see how it's stored. I assumed it was an integer.
It was a nvarchar(6). I just sat there in disbelief and felt disgusted.
It kept me up later than usual last night
Why tho? 😐1 -
UGHH AMANDA, I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PILATES SESSION OR WHETHER YOU HAD MORNING COFFEE.
CAN WE SKIP THE SMALL TALK AND FUCKING GET THIS MEETING STARTED ALREADY?
ok fine, I won't be getting much done today (as usual), but that doesn't mean I HAVE TIME TO DEDICATE LISTENING TO YOUR BULLSHIT.7 -
Most upsetting interview rejection?
Back when I graduated college, I did the usual rounds of interviews with insurance companies, banks, various other institutional businesses set up by the college's career center.
One local insurance company interview I thought went great. Usual 'Where do you see yourself in 5 years?' type questions, told her about my job history, very high level type stuff.
Couple of weeks later I get a letter in the mail and after the usual 'It was great to meet you blah blah blah', it ended with
'State Farm will never consider you for a position with our company.'
Never?! My then fiance (now wife) yelled "WHAT DID YOU DO?!!!" and I racked my brain for anything I might have said or done. The HR lady was attractive, but I didn't stare at any body parts and I didn't make any weird sexual advances (I was nervous enough without *that* going thru my mind).
The college career center floods the local companies with graduates and I was #5 in the waiting room that day. My only guess was they got me confused with someone else.
My fiance wanted me to call them immediately to straighten out any misunderstanding, but I knew what was done, was done. It's not like they would realize "Oh, that's right, it was Bob that kept looking at Karen's breasts, not you...come work for us!" Besides, why would I want to work someplace that didn't know/care who I was?6 -
Kotlin support on Android:
i never liked Java, not because of the language but for the usual bad design implementations and Android is one of those.
Then Kotlin arrived, it looked very promising but it's when i looked at Coroutines that it simply blew my mind:
you just have to write your code and the Kotlin's compliler "magic" will do most of the boring/complex stuff for you and it's even great performance wise!
I even refactored inter-process calls to simple sync functions with few like of code and for a non-android developer like me it's just love at first sight!3 -
One thing I wanted to say here before:
The more the community of DevRant grows, the more "repeated" posts it will have. It's totally usual on social networks when they start to grow.
So, instead of saying bad things to people who post the same stuff, just ignore it and keep the community growing. :)2 -
Just got hospitalized because of exhaustion after 22 Hours of non-stop Programming. Diagnosed having Light Cardiac Arhythmia
Its Raining Season, my usual habit of Morning Jog cannot be done, i gain 12kg this past 1.5 month. I need to consider joining gym membership.
I am fucked up.11 -

Legitimately haven't written a single piece of code in months... I feel truly broken!
Haven't even done my usual of prototyping 456 things and then immediately shelving them, maybe it's time to get back in the game1 -
I've just found the worst website ever. After some seconds, they show a banner with the usual "agree to our use of cookies" stuff. Of course, I clicked on settings. So it opens another page in another tab. As I started to read that page, another banner was displayed. Ofc I clicked on settings. The same page was opened in yet a new tab. I think you can see we're this is going...2

decided to participate in a short c++ curse at uni, just to refresh my memory about it since it seems rather important.
Got sidetracked at the preparation task, which was the usual hello world...
I'm running this in emacs now...
Like, one view is the program and under it is the shell run from inside emacs...
I dunno why... send help?
Now I'm considering how can I configure the emacs shell in a fun way.. oh dear.7 -
Is it usual in your university that students don't come to classes for no reason?
Or just seeking for a chance to cancel the class?
Or I'm just the only one who can't wait for learning new things?7 -
Today I spent 3 hours working on a bug. As usual, the issue was on the chair/keyboard interface...3
-
My Windows 10 installation now demands a restart every day to install updates.
Obivously it fails to install the updates every time, as usual.
But now I get the notification that I can either "wait an hour" or restart now.
You know what, fuck video games. They aren't worth the trouble of running this piece of shit opererating system.23 -
Me sends the laptop to hibernate to get off the train. As usual, the laptop goes to hibernate and shuts off after a few seconds. Not today, today it decided, it likes it much warmer than healthy for it and now I'm sitting here with a hot laptop in thermal emergency shutdown. Damn it6

HEY!
JAVASCRIPT!
I wasted 3 hours on your this. self. null, undefined, + asynch functions, bullshit "features"...
AGAIN...
and your taking 8 seconds to compile and test each wild guess that I make until I finally console.log every single fucking variable in order to make sense of it all
so, as usual, FUCK YOU17 -
My usual day at work, as a Designer.
Boss: Wow! Awesome design. Great work. I loved it.
Me: Thank you.
Boss: But wait, I have some change suggestions.
(After a while, gives 10-15 change suggestions that will completely change the overall design)10 -
-Management puts unrealistic deadline as usual-

10 min after the interview:
I’m thinking how for the last 15 min of the interview they were pitching about how great the life at IBM is and why I should join.21 -
I made some substantial changes to the codebase.
I run all the unit tests, as usual.
A test that has nothing to do with the feature I'm working on breaks.
"Huh that's odd, let me debug that"
I set a breakpoint with the condition set so that it pauses before the test assertion goes red.
I start the debugger and.... all tests pass
Turns out it only happens like 500/10000 times....
This will be fun6 -

So I was trying to compare my local website CSS properties to the one deployed on production and realized that font/blocks were a little bit smaller than usual. Tried to debug which CSS changes caused this issue for half an hour only to realize that it was because the browser's zoom level was set to 90% locally 🤦🏽♂️
This happened with a guy who just finished 5 years of professional coding yesterday 😂2 -
Imma be real with youse, i havent been posting shit cause i have a great job with great teammates and great management. Like it a rant that i cant rant but thats a good thig i guess. But ion wanna see devrant community goin down the gutter cause old members r leavin so imma stick around and post stupid shit in the comments as usual. So youse can stop bothering me bout bein inactive hmmm3

Weee both projects from yesterday went perfect...
Usual most of my projects end up fucked up because I want to do stuff I don't know how to... (well, I'm learning so I don't get frustrated, just pick up another idea).
Air cooler for power people V 1.1 works perfect. Today we will get almost 40 C and I feel the cold air in my face.2 -
Girlfriend, family, relatives, non-coder friends keeps ranting why I don't follow a social convention of attending usual meetings or gatherings and advising I should rather get some time away from a monitor screen.
*Like that's going to happen, getting away from screen, ever, hahahahahhha* -
Panicking awake a minute before the 7:00 am alarm thinking you overslept, knowing you have an 8 am meeting and that you need to make sure you’re fully conscious for it which means taking your ADHD meds ASAP and not getting distracted for an hour as per the usual.
Then getting a message at 7:13 that the meeting is going to be repurposed and your attendance is no longer necessary. 🙃1 -
Sometimes I just HATE Google.
No, this is NOT because they keep all your data, are evil and all the usual things. I just think they suck, yes there are super cool things and a lot of things are just the best in the field but I just feel like we could do better, there are so many smart people out there I just do not understand why everything is taking so much time.
PS. Just deleted all my browsing histroy accidentally because I didn't read the small print - in the picture attatched.7 -
Today's my birthday... As usual, I worked in my office... At morning (approx 11:30AM) I received a call from my boss yelling cause a shit deadline and for some shit that I didn't sent to him (I already sent, the bastad was in vacation and didn't saw it)... His wife wished me happy birthday but the mother fucker didn't say a shit instead yelling during all day... Our relationship sucks cause he's a fucking bastard that doesn't know a shit of development process and I am done of his stupid shit... I fucking need to change my job!!!!13

It’s the second maths pre-final exam today. Next after that - the finals.
I feel more ready than usual, I practiced more than I usually do before this test.
Wish me luck!4 -
It's 6am and I could only sleep for 4 hours, if I don't get my morning coffee soon I'm going to cut a bitch
.
.
Also please save the usual "I didn't sleep for a year while climbing a mountain while breast feeding orphans while curing cancer" kind of comments4 -
Mac fucking book pro! No! Just because I brushed up against you doesn’t mean I want you to boot up! Do you think I’m that eager to turn you on? Is the usual brain dead Apple user that fucking lazy to not wanna press a button to turn his computer on? And there’s no fuckin’ way to change this behavior!? I tried changing system variables but none of the suggested tips work. And you even have Apple support people ask: "why WOULN'T you want it to boot up if you sneeze on it?" FUXKKLK13

My productivity hack? I code in the shower and use a water whiteboard. I have to be up very early and feel the most clear headed right when I wake up.
If I'm stumped on something, I can usually tackle it from a new perspective. For the most part it works out. Other then the occasional profanity if I accidentally erase something and the sometimes longer than usual showers, my wife doesn't mind. Usually because it's 5 in the morning and when she takes a shower there is this scribble that she tries to decode!1 -
As usual, I guess I am getting depressed again. Happens at the last week every month.
This is like my personal PMS. And have no idea how to overcome this. FML.5 -
Just read a job posting for a junior .Net software dev. 2 years experience in C#, Visual Studio, .Net. Usual suspects right, though two years experience for a junior seems off. But they also want embedded systems experience. wat?4

What a horrible monday today was. Fuck-all worked. Missed deadline. Not much sleep. Heart is racing.
But hey, the horoscope in the daily toiletpaper press knows it all better, as usual, 100% IQ:
💫"You have finally found your center. Your body and soul are feeling great and your're in tune with yourself. You are enjoying it and would love to share your experiences with your loved one."💫
Where is my rocket launcher??? I have to kill a newspaper.6 -
So I joined a course for big data analysis. And they setup a lab specifically for us. Pulling us away from the usual computer labs
AND GUESS WHAT THEY DON'T EVEN BLOODY HAVE MYSQL INSTALLED. THEY'VE CHARGED ME A FORTUNE AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN CARE TO INSTALL THE BASIC SOFTWARES AND ITS ALREADY BEEN 2 WEEKS WITH THE START OF THE COURSE AND NOTHING.
F**king hate this man!!!!10 -
I'm on my train, leaving after my last day of work. I didn't hate that job, quite the opposite actually, but Im sure the new job will give me more opportunities to grow professionally.
Now I'm just sad I'll miss all of the familiar faces, and all the usual things I was doing.
So many emotions and I don't even know where to start.
Oh and I'm drunk too.1 -
Fucking Apple locked my email again....
'Oh, we have no idea why this keeps happening'
Assholes... You'd think locking someone's account twice within a week without knowing why would be unacceptable, but they just act like it's business as usual..
Apple used to care about its customers, now what? They think they're too big to care anymore? Why don't you go shove your new icrap up your asshole cook!6 -
So now I’m working with this code that is roughly documented because ”variable names are self-explanatory”.
Yeah, you just forgot that FORTRAN does not support utf-8 variable names...
Why utf-8? Because then if I see:
real :: 座標(3)
I would understand that you mean ”zahyō”, the usual 3D position array ”r(3)”, but no, I need to deal with:
real :: zah(3)
yeah...🙃🔫16 -
TL;DR - Mining coins to solve captchas
I was puzzled when I clicked to download something and this little captcha thingy appeared. I clicked, as usual, to solve it, but was amazed to look just a progess bar going and going... then I saw a little legend that says "what's this?", click and this is the link
https://coinhive.com/info/...
Practically, you're mining Monero instead of watching ads and solving regular captchas...
What are your thoughts on this?4 -
In some malls here in russia we casually have home depot stuff vending machines, right next to usual snack ones.1

recently made a mp3 player out of my raspberry pi 3 b+, trying to add a 16x2 lcd to it and as usual, failing to suceed 😂3

So few of you will know that I was a bit wasted last night (Monday night). Few of you will also know I was having trouble with my new linux installation. (POP!_OS)
After troubleshooting this and that, I gave up. I believe my hardware just doesn't wanna pop. So I installed manjaro xfce.
This morning I woke up with my laptop beside me with a locked screen. I entered the password I remember I setup. Wrong. I entered all usual passwords I normally use. All wrong.
😖 😖 😖5 -
So I got some new methods to call, when I tried to call them the usual way, it didn't work quite well.
Surprised, I asked the coder of them.
"Yeah, we're using the new way, you don't mind ?"
nah, no problem, I'm starting to develop my skill in divination and mind reading, that was just my usual training.1 -
C++ developer: alright, this should finally fix it. Please just compile so I can go to sleep
GCC: I'm sorry Dave. I can't let you do that.
THEN THERES THE USUAL SEGFAULT WITH NO STACKTRACE AND I SPEND THE REST OF MY NIGHT VALGRINDING2 -
Never tell 60 users on a demo to "click on this button" at the same time.
Infra went "poof". No time to auto scale in this scenario.
Usual usage of app : 4 to 5 personns who do actions in the windows of 2 seconds.8 -
Only got 2h of sleep instead of my usual 5h. I'm a walking corpse and there are still 7h left until I can go home 😴
Stupid, calming water-flow sounds are going to bring me down4 -
Same as the year before.
Trying hard to achieve good grades in school. Nothing special. The usual shit, as you can see...
Thanks for taking your time and read my unnecessary post anyways ;) -
So we're about to launch the annual financial reports for a multi-billion corporation, but as usual, they're late at providing us with the information we need.
Recently they thought they had been hacked, so they blocked our access to their servers, which we need to upload the annual reports! Oh, the lovely hierarchy in large companies.
But hey, they finally decided to drop IE6 support, so that's a win1 -
Came to know about deepin OS on devrant yesterday
Tried it just few moment ago. It's the most beautiful OS I had ever seen. But ...
There is hell lot of issues. Except for the top sites like google, facebook linkedin github, no other page or site is opening. Browser just stops by saying "site can't be reached". Also these sites are loading slower than usual.
Even internet is unaccessible from terminal. Apt-get install just stops at "getting headers 0%"
Please help3 -
The mobile web browser is 80% done. I've pretty much added all the basic functions. I'm open for suggestions as usual.4

So it's Friday afternoon just before a bank holiday weekend here I'm the UK, perfect time for our production database to go TITSUP (total inability to support usual performance), life sucks then you die folks....2

Started up KiTTY to connect to my virtual test server per usual when I couldn't establish a connection.
Nothing too unusual so I do the typical troubleshooting I make sure host, port and authentication is all correct and it is. So now I open the display for the virtual server and start looking at ip info, host info, checking ports and everything is completely fine.
Now I'm getting frustrated so I start running things like configtest in apache, using systemctl to check the services status, even restarting virtualbox in my windows 10 devpc. Still cannot connect!
I start feeling hopeless and just shut everything down, the whole operating system.
*takes breath*
Computer boots up and I start my usual thing of creating workspaces, opening editors, starting servers, etc.
I open KiTTY again and launch my virtual test server..

Do you guys swear 😏, I do a lot about tech but I don't see anyone on here doing that
Nothing like shit I just shocked myself

Along with the usual sheet of our contact data that our school gives us to check if it is still correct, we now also get a nice, thick layer of privacy policy because of the GDPR. Nice!1

Been trying out WebStorm for my html and js instead of my coding in my usual vim setup today. I think I may have converted. Only time will tell.6

Such glorious Wednesday...
#1: Friend needs me to keep her cats, hasn't called yet to give me keys (and she's leaving tonight).
#2: Got an e-mail from a job I applied, rejected cause I flunked the impromptu technical interview (with the usual pretty wording).
#3: Helping a friend with his dissertation code in Java. Just a marvellous spaghetti code with minimal semblance of a structure and a hodgepodge of various solutions found on the Internet. 2H 40M and still nothing... At least I have my stress ball to save me from mental breakdown...1 -
I'm going nuts with this isolation, so next on my agenda... let's learn flutter!
Anyone have some half decent app tuts (preferably not videos) that they can suggest? I'm sure the usual "to do" list has been done and dusted a billion times, I'm looking for something more explorative into different features of flutter rather then just a "build this"5 -
I might be new to webdev , but wtf is wrong with imports in js ?
html seems to get the only decent way of dealing with js: all the files mentioned in subsequent <script> tags can access the functions of previous file
but when it comes to those generated html content(aka react projects) and servers, nobody seems to come to an agreement : react guys uses import while server people uses require. and both of these can't be used in the same file : import works in mjs files (or usual files too if type is defined as module) while require works in cjs file (or usual js files if type is NOT defined as module)
so i kind of like imports for its elegance and resembelence to java imports. and i might have got into some errors in unrelated areas , so my package.json has type=module . i want to use some cjs package (jsonwebtoken) and that shit for the love of god won't work with import, so i gotta use it with cjs file and then the whole project can't use that crappy cjs file.
WTAF ? has web world not got matured enough to not have this shitty import export situation?should i write caveman code and convert everything to require(..) ?
fuck me6 -
Usual python code problems coming from someone who has been coding in Javascript and PHP (<--no pitchforks please). It's been months already but old habits still keep on coming back
- adding a semi-colon
- mixing spaces with tabs
- using a lowercase boolean
- adding an open brace when declaring a function
- forgetting the colon ( ;'s brother) -
Just finished a app for mapping printers based purely on convention in a Citrix environment, no manual config needed. Chief of operations said "it's fixing stuff like this that should trigger a bonus, too bad we're the government". (Yay, thanks for rubbing it in).
Then I responded "I'll get my reward in heaven as usual, then". CIO says: "but you're not going there...."
Guess I just need a fire extinguisher then. Thanks boss.1 -
Everyone I know chilling and shit.
As a developer and having the ability to work from home I am being pushed more than usual and I think it is because of no commute time I am working more now a days.5 -
ah yes, the usual family get-together: my grandma's throwing heavy shit with intent to kill, my sister is violently crying in a corner and refuses to move to safety, and my dad's shut down in a chair somewhere in the house. Just like every Christmas. And Thanksgiving. And Halloween. And every other large holiday.
Surprised I made it to 19.3 -
Dear PM: In the next couple weeks, I'm going to be taking sprint tasks on 4 teams instead of the usual 1 team. I'm concerned that I'll be too divided to deliver on any of them well.
Dear Dev: Should be fine, since you don't have to do those tasks all at the same time. It's like . . . you don't have to commute to the office and do your job at the same time.4 -
I'm relatively new to the whole development and stuff, so I have no idea how usual process goes.
So when my project moved onto closed beta, I thought I could rest a bit.
NOPE.
Apparently half the shit I've done sucks so much and I need to debug the shit out of it.
Bless the testers.3 -

On top of having a good day, aka I didn't spend hours on 1 bug as usual... my devRant stickers made it! Thanks @dfox & Tim :)2 -
My Vega56 gpu is mining a bit faster than usual after the last reset. Not by a huge amount, but a little faster. Enough for it to be noticeable.
I don't wanna touch it. I just wanna let it sit there and happily chew away those hashes.
But I will have to touch it eventually, if I wanna turn my monitor off. If I wanna go to sleep.
Doing that will trigger a restart of the miner.
And I will never know if it will have that extra lil speed bump ever again.
Why is life so cruel4 -
Hey I noticed this month devrant++ subscription is $2.12 on Google Play. The usual is $1.99.
Did anyone else notice? did Google start taxing subscriptions? That's sort of cheap of them... They already take a 30% cut and they can't foot the tax bill?20 -
LOL I totally forgot about the school today.
I went to job as usual, opened up Vscodium and started to write some stuff.
Then it hit me 😅 Oh god...
It took my 5 hours to remember but I'm in class right now.3 -
Hey Devs!
How you are doing?
I am here after 2-3 months. I had health issues then my TL cum Friend suggested to do a trip because we are on work from home too. So went on 15 days trip too.. It was worth it.
But again back to normal life as usual.. Code sleep repeat!!1 -
Apart of the fact that WordPress itself is one big hack, my most creative hacky solution was making it (dev) environment friendly.
First, I created a DB pull and push tool in NodeJS (on TypeScript). Then, because WP is so clever and stores internal URLs in full length in the DB, I had to create a DB migrator (find & replace) and attached it to the DB pull task.
After this, of course WP still has its config in one file, so I used composer to install phpdotenv and filled the config with environment variables.
Bundled with some good ol' Gitlab CI/CD magic, the website is now 10% sanely developable.
It feels like having to shovel piles of shit, but with a golden shovel. Everything stinks as hell but at least there is a tiny bling to it, temporarily.
But in all seriousness: WordPress is a god damn fucking pile of tumors!3 -
Sitting 3h in a bullshit claiming and blaming meeting called 'refinement' as 'the tech expert' while PO and customers fight how stories and bugs should be priorized and importantly enough they discussed why the god damn bugfix isn't alive yet that was promised to be deployed this morning.. I was up to deploy it right the time they said I really have to go to that meeting... Yeah.. Business as usual

Just got a message from a recruiter. It was something different. There was a link with a ZIP file and a bunch of files in it. Plus two MD5 hashes. You should now find the correct private key and the encrypted message to decrypt it with the key. This gave you the password to get further in the application process.
Not particularly difficult, but a refreshing change from the usual blah blah.1 -
Today I woke up 🌅 wanting to write code that is more art 🎨🖌️ than just the usual dry technical stuff...
I want to look at my commits this afternoon and feel proud about mastery and craft!2 -
Windows 10 in dual boot.
It reminds me that I should care about the people who use my products.
Other than that, all usual things sublime, git, TERMINAL, Jetbrains -
So, My usual dual boot setup is Linux(Dev stuff) and Windows(For gaming) and for Linux I always create different partition just to make sure I don't fuck up while removing Linux(mostly switching). So at one time I wanted to switch to CentOS and I accidentally deleted windows partition of C drive which had like 90+GB just for Steam....it was not Big loss but still it was pain downloading data for steam games.

There's a production site with api call limits. We experienced waaaaay more visitors than usual and I forgot to increase the api call limit, so new users weren't able to do anything. FML again, update emails sent out.2

In a hackathon, my team decided to work on a Android app as a challenge to ourselves. It was our first Android app development and we were very excited at first. But after awhile, one of my teammate (the usual problematic one) gives up implementing the recyclerview after few hours of struggling, and decided to 'fk it' and watch YouTube linustech. As such, I have to takeover and implemented it within an hour by just googling and following some tutsplus tutorial. What do you do with this kind of teammate?1

Was using my Arch linux and made a usual -Syu update, and what a fuck: my mesa driver went crazy, sddm fucked up, and I couldn't load my favorite KDE!

So I had a Skype interview today . They asked me to write a very basic calculation function.. as am looking at the question.. I was like that's too easy .. so I start coding and it just didn't want to work .. as soon as the Skype meeting over and they gave me the usual will get bk to u... I look at my code again and in less then a minute I wrote a new code that solved it .. 😓😭 ..2

Me: "We seriously have an issue with staff engagement and motivation. Programmers must be given more challenges, they need to be creative, to innovate...
Boss: "Sure, but we can only do the fun things if it does not impede the Business As Usual."2 -
So I am finishing school this year and I want to study computer science after that. They keep telling us at information events that a salary of 90.000+ €/year is quite usual for a good programmer...
I'm just wondering if it is really true or are they just talking bullshit? Does anyone have some experience or information for me? :)9 -
Working at a different company for a few weeks before getting back to my usual work.
I'm using everything I hate: ReactJS, factories, style through JS, Jira, Teams, TDD...
The only good thing is I'm using TypeScript...1 -
I don't get publicity hungry personalities on Medium. Their usual headlines :
"Why we left `${ insert framework}`. There's nothing wrong with it though."
Either have the balls to say you didn't do your homework when you started, or hold your peace.
Don't screw the hardworking folks whose code you depended on before bailing out. -
You know what I hate? Git commit messages stating 'fixed tests' or 'fixed docs' or 'fixed integration problems'. You did not fix anything, fuckhead. You updated the code, introducing more bugs as usual. FIXED?! NO, UPDATED! That's what I hate.1

Wanted to work from home as usual. Logged in in citrix with my credentials and totp, started rdp to connect with the bank.
i try it for the first time: failed to connect
I try it for the second time: error 0x112d (some thing about two programs that have an the same port open)
I ask my colleagues to look after the pc in the office and what was it:
FUCKING WINDOWS UPDATE FILLED THE RAM COMPLETLY.
Luckily no data was lost, since i had everything important commited and pushed.3 -
Final exam gonna start in 2 days and here I'm contemplating what to do after exams(lots of stuff in mind).
I think everyone go through this and usual dilemma for choosing what to do.
So much to learn, so little time. Smh.. -
Notification system is weird
Suppose I have 200 notifs unread and as usual, dR shows 99+ on its bell. But if I click to see it(someone mentioned you in a comment and ++d your rant and whatsoever), its logic is flawed and shows only 97 notifs left unread. But actually 200-3=197 in the whole fucking list5 -
So I was being a noob as usual and was trying to install Java on a Linux distro. I left my computer on for > 2 hours thinking it was just taking it's time. Little did I know, the terminal I pasted the command into was already running a process that froze. So it didn't even attempt to install. 😤14

I have started to learn Python and have ventured to the usual places to try and learn. Udemy, YouTube, Mimo app, and Programming Hub app.
I'm familiar with programming languages like c#, and JavaScript but have never become proficient in any of them. I'm hoping I can change that with Python.
Im looking for anything I can get. Advice, links, books, not sure what else there is. If it will help me learn and hopefully retain the info than I'm all for it.
Cheers15 -
The titles - some of these events have the most insufferable titles. If it's not some cringey pop-culture acronym like AVNGRS then it's a super nondescript, mysterious title like "The Bakeoff", which helps nobody and doesnt do the event justice.
I would much prefer "MIT Anual CTF, 2021" than the usual bullshit fanfare referencing the Matrix.1 -
christmas wishlist????? dont give me some of those cute crap, what i really need:

- 2TB HDD!!! pls i need to degoogle my life
- wirerap cables
- a new laptop with gr8 specs, good for both programming and gaming pls
- a big whiteboard for my overflowing ideas
id rather have something useful than the usual stuff people give as gifts xd3 -
Is there a program which is good for simply looking at code? It wouldn't be an editor per say, but a viewer. It should be tailored around code, have the usual highlighting, color themes is welcomed, maybe something that highlights comments, documentation and so on.
For development on Windows, this role have always been filled by Notepad++ for me because of its integration to the context menu. It does the job, but I'm wondering if there is actually something like this on the market.17 -
Given the following:
1) how much we (as a species) relly on google search (or alternatives) to do most of our usual jobs
2) the rate and aggresivity of advertsing that keeps creeping into our lives
I predict that in the following years self-curated and group maintained indexes of search results and popular technical pages will become more and more popular
Something like torrent trackers but specifically for StackOverflow/Reddit-like threads and questions -
And here we are again... so many paths to choose from, so much uncertainty. And, as usual, the most interesting companies are the slowest to respond.
Constantly wondering what's the right thing to do, and neglecting my current job while I'm at it...2 -
Dafuq is wrong with Android Studio, build error report is useless every time I have error in one of my files I need to run gradle assemble debug manually to know where the fuck is my error
Like now I changed type of a property and as usual build report showed error in Databinding auto generated class instead of pointing to my fragment where the error should be3 -
That feeling when typing "dev" in your browser address bar and hitting enter takes you to devRant instead of your usual developer website.1

The mini heart attack when I touched my external hdd and didn't feel any vibrations as usual and then couldn't ssh into the pi it was connected to. I was ready for the worst, but a restart solved it4

So the tests for the AMD RX 7000 GPUs are out. Business as usual: superb for non-RT gaming given the price, crap at everything else - including energy efficiency in FPS/W.
Pro tip to the AMD marketing: you don't highlight features like energy where you suck relative to the competition. You point out your strong points. Admittedly, you don't have much to work with here.3 -
To my boss who thinks is ok to message somebody:
- On his/her day off
- On Saturday
- On a Sunday morning
Of course all was related to business as usual stuff no real emergency stuff nor that would have impacted anyone waiting till Monday morning.
Of course no overtime nor on call here and been blamed due my ‘flexible’ schedule (read arriving at 09:15 rather say 09:00) but of course out of office hours work or having to deal with hot projects no one was able to deliver does not count...
Talking of true leadership10 -
Don't remember who recommended me wes bos, but generally it's ok, you do learn a lot, even things not directly mentioned in the usual tutorials, but the amount of mistakes he makes, makes it look like hes just started learning it himself and now tries to just quickly shoot out a course out thin air to just bust some more money up his pocket2

Skinned my mother alive. She didn’t feel a thing. Threw away everything except the skin itself, but left the head intact. She’s alive and well, albeit can’t move. I roll her up, pack her in my bag and bring her to school with me.
She wasn’t quite against it, but wasn’t happy either. Just kept talking to me condescendingly, as usual.
Meanwhile, my grandpa recreated his room in Excel and moved there.6 -

Designer: Is this problem?
Me: Do YOU think this is problem? -
Played around with the window manager i3-gaps after seeing Luke Smith on Youtube. Seems really productive but I'm so used to minimizing windows.
What is the usual way in i3 to deal with Windows you keep open in the Background? Do you just move them to a different workspace?4 -
There are few layoffs in my company due to COVID-19 and so now there's 3 times more work then usual per employee and fucking senior manager keeps on threatening that if we don't meet the deadlines, they will get us fired as well!
Have to do overtime every fucking day, also even on weekends, my life has got all ruined and couldn't do anything about it as getting a new job in this time is going to be a pain in the ass as well!7 -
npm you dank pile of shit!
After updating npm I get "Maximum call stack size exceeded" when I use npm install --no-bin-links as usual.
After searching a solution for this shit it seams like the npm devs fucked around with the --no-bin-links option, since this nasty error message vanishes if one downgrade npm.
These goddamn assholes.
Keep your filthy fingers off this option, since it is essentially for windows devs!11 -
#justathought
I have realized that my sleepless self is smarter than my usual self . Its like , as my battery goes out, a fuckin monster takes control and tries to rule my brain, scolding my usual self , taunting over smartly and wanting to fuck the hell up everyone who tries to mess with me (nd even some normal friends too)
Whereas my usual self is just meek , defensive and never attacking, sweet listener, calm kind of person with whom people usually mess up or joke about for fun .
I like this aggressive me. Fuck you body health , we are living the life of a sleepless asshole2 -
as usual... someone presents something in the biweekly developers meeting, it gets highly critizised by most devs, and yet the day after everyones trying it out. Sometimes is hard to understand how devs think =/1
-
I never thought that my usual lunch buddies/co-interns leaving would cause me to have a hard time coping up. I'm very unproductive these past three days. I feel so sad.
-
at work....
windows: please restart to use newly installed tool
me: *opens menu and sees "update and restart"* NOOOoo this takes longer than usual
me: well see y'all im gonna go get some breakfast1 -
Today, I travelled as usual, 1.5 hours to the office using different types of public transport, greeted my colleagues and settled down in my cabin to begin working when I realised that I was wearing my t-shirt inside out.
-
Got an interview at a financial tech firm. I asked them what I should wear:
Engineering is a casual environment, so we encourage you to wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. We are focused on your knowledge and skillset, not your outfit, so please come as you are.
Not a suit, OK... but not sure if I should wear weekend casual or my usual business casual/work clothes...5 -
Dev: check these out everything is perfect as usual
Tester: your last code behave like windows update dude -
I felt all energized during a long holiday around here sleeping wholeheartedly and in the last night of the holiday I stayed up late and now I'm here back to my usual routine with my usual sleepy self.
-
I found this out during my final practical exam while doing...
sudo useradd
phone's weren't allowed so no pic! 😀😀
We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:
#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

It can’t be only me.
Long story short. A second grade classmate suddenly reconnects with me. We talk about this and that, exchange some memories, the usual. 20 minutes into the conversation… she goes: Can you do a website for me for my….
I hate these kind of people, I mean you have a better change just telling me without the foreplay, it’s just making me angry.3 -
why the usual 1+ button becoming ++ ?
I'm asleep just for the whole weekend and suddenly the world already changed?4 -
Aah, I love the smell of being blamed for risking the deadline because of taking longer than usual in implementing an integration to a schizophrenic, rape victim legacy system where I’m on my own to find out why it’s having violent diarrhea after feeding it a small dropdown menu, because no one knows what has been done or what happens where in the intestines of this abomination3

I was aspired to be a graphic designer back then when I was in primary school, playing with all the fancy Photoshop filters. Then I got sick of static images, move on to Flash (just before it died violently). I self learn the ActionScript by myself and fall in love with programming. Not the usual language to begin with, but it kinda form my basis in OOP concept.
I still have that thick ActionScript 3.0 bible with me. Keeping it so I can always remember the first time I broke my geeky virginity. -
Had a shameful moment today, when I got my PR kicked back with a comment "can you be patient and not rush this through?"
I knew that the person meant well and the code was not up to my usual standard but at the moment I felt a strong sense of inferiority. Worst thing is that it's still lingering as I am going to bed.
Hope tomorrow is a new day.4 -
Previously: https://devrant.com/rants/1207077/...
Talked the bossman, he just asked that I finish the project before being put back on my usual ERP maintainer role.
I agreed to it and the faster this fucking plugin is done, the faster I can go back to my optimization and maintenance project :D -

Today I planned to work on my Java school project. I have clean install of windows 10 and I opened Netbeans as usual. No source tab, just history. HOW THE FUCK I CANNOT EDIT THE FUCKING CODE IN FUCKING IDE, I asked. I think let's uninstall this crap and install again then this shit happened. (It's good to have a second computer in my dorm, it's called redundance I guess)6 -
I have a pair of older TVs that contain data readouts. However, because the screens don't always update they are susceptible to screen burns. I'm looking for a screensaver or something that could move around on the screen but not completely make the data disappear. The current running thing we have are the Windows Bubbles screensaver. This allows us to still see the data but it freezes the screens. (No data update)
I need something that will save the screen but still allow the browsers to do their screen updates as usual. -
I recently logged into my care provider's online services for the first time, to schedule a doctor's appointment.
The login form requested the usual: username and password - but also a birth date. Which their developers implemented with the default Android datepicker control.
Meaning I had to click 'back' 339 times to get to December 1989.
fuuuuck.2 -
It is usual in business to do backend code with 0 basic Interface to enter data or seeing data ? Or anything else .. im fullstack but i don't want to make onnllyyy backend ... When vuejs look at me with petty3
-
And so this morning we put aside our usual daily activities for a while, and gather here to give expression to the thoughts and feelings that well up in us at this time of loss.
And also because in one-way or another,
GitHub's sudden acquisition
Affecting all of us.
Please raise your glasses as we drink a toast to the memory of such a splendid tool, that we know without a doubt, will never be the same as we know it right now.2 -
I've been asked to write a job ad for a frontend developer, as I have never don that, what would you write in there? And what are usual salaries for frontend devs? Also what would you ask them in an interview? What kind of coding challenges would you give them? Also we're not looking for a "code monkey" only but that person should also be responsible for jow everything looks (like the design and UI/UX of the site). How would you call that position? I've for now put "Frontend UI/UX Web-Developer" there.2
-
More like a confession.
Had a task that involved invalidating a string if it contained more than five digits (anywhere in the string.)
"No problem", I thought. That sounds like a simple regex!
^(\D*\d?\D*){5}$
Turns out catastrophic backtracking had other ideas, and I revert to my usual "atomic grouping fudge that will hopefully work without me really understanding what's going on" of:
^(?>\D*\d?\D*){5}$
...anyone else shamefully follow this mantra, or am I the only one that hasn't skilled up properly on regexes...7 -
Transactional emails. What do you use as the outgoing email address for your app/website?
I'm so bored with the usual suspects. Maybe...
shazbot@
major_tom@
nanu_nanu@
Hmm...2 -
So I'm currently having a love/hate relationship with Atom... I love that it only has what I want and nothing more, but I hate that it lacks a lot of basic features like automatically adding the closing tags to my html, and the only beautifying package I can find defaults to two spaces instead of my usual 4 and I can't find how to change it.
Does anyone know how to change the spacing on the beautify package? And does anyone know a package that will auto close my html tags?7 -
I'm always amazed at how people tend to prefer a certain pain instead of an uncertain relief... Batshit crazy...
One cousin talking about his abusive relationship: "Could be worst.... At least he doesn't beat the children"
A colleague talking about his failed marriage: "It's not so bad, we just have to avoid each other."
And you'll find the same shit with management. "The prod is only on D.O.S. twice a day...", " Every deploy is a hell as shit hit the fan, but after a week it's the usual"...
Crazy how "change" afraid people -
4 hours later and my code is finally working and as usual it was only one line causing everything but on the bright side I now now how to use mocks and spies
-
# Gave me a job and more stress and literally nightmares;
# Physically resisting myself to give solutions to everything people moan about. Even myself. But we know things flap in production;
# Cursing my life, other people's code, customer's IQ more often;
# Getting more LinkedIn, messages, profile views and requests than my social media (which I really don't give a shit about);
# Using a combination of programming punctuations in usual writing (this rant for example);
# My sleep is down the toilet;
# Never complaining any coffee as long as it works; -
Is there a market for novelty ducks? I shared an office with a coworker so i cannot really speak to mine, i still got this one just for the sake of having one. It looked a bit different than the usual ones but its not exactly novelty, but it got me thinking...
anyway, i present you "standing duck with hat"3 -
Day 1 back from sick leave
Can't focus for shit, like even less so than usual
Not sure if it's the meds
General dissatisfaction here
The unengaging task
Personal issues
Or just sleeping like shit last night3 -
I feel stupid about once or twice per day because of samll and obvious mistakes I make.
But maaan I feel dumb as fucking rock when I read the Docker documentation, I don't understand any fucking thing, and as usual, I can't find 2 websites with the same opinion about anything
I JUST WANT TO MAKE MY THING WORK, PLEASE -
tl;dr: What's the best tuto/course for learning webpack ?
I'm mostly a PHP dev, working on my own framework, but I also use more and more JS, and recently some Typescript (and loved it).
But my usual gulp workflow starts to grow old and limited. ES6 modules seems a great improvement while every webpack user seems to say it gives headaches. So what's the best way to start ? ^^4 -
When the opensource alternative is even better than the closedsource one
(Context: Slide for reddit is the best client of the bunch)2 -
I’m already put on “support” for days if not weeks now and i’m tired of it. Give me a concrete project instead of the usual bucket of shit please!
-
Was working today when all of a sudden the background on my laptop and monitor changed from its usual mostly black image to bright white. Tried to set the desktop background, but it had no effect. Honestly thought I broke my computer for a few minutes.
Turns out one of the ubersichts (custom desktop widgets) was attempting to curl a page that was "Down for server upgrades". Definitely one of the weirder computer issues I've had. -
Happy new year friends
Hope all yer projects will be fruitful
And the clients not the usual pain in the ass
MMXXI let's go -
Soooooo last week was a long week, we have until the end of the month to achieve a big goal and this week was all about going to bed at 3 am or so and begin the day at 7 as usual, the weekend that I ussually take to rest and sleep was at the office too, if we dont get to the goal I will be more dissapointed than ever before
-
So I changed the language and keyboard layout on my windows machine and now it is stuck for 5 minutes after signing in, waiting for... something, before you can use it as usual. It's like I'm back in 1995. But at least I can use my new keyboard properly I guess.
-
outlook 2016 is so buggy and always show you have unread emails when there is none and no unread box as usual to be. the theme and layout xan mass up by itself, good job MS office team, u finally did a good job to show native app can be as buggy and ugly as web version of outlook. if you have not upgrade please DON'T4
-
So work today was a pain in the behind as usual ( although the comfy chair made up for it eventually)....My Boss walked in every twenty minutes to ask me the same annoying question." Are you done with the app?", He said....even after showing him over 6045 lines of code on a single config file
Why are bosses so mean?😥3 -
yup! your usual monday morning full of stress, where you drive to work early and know your timeline is messed up1
-
I had %1 of charge before going to sleep last night. My phone was turned off and not charging all night (~10 hours). I woke up and I turned on my phone as usual.
And I have %19 of charge. How is this possible? Does anyone have an explanation?
(This is probably my second time facing this.)
(P.S: Nights are cold here)5 -
Coffee + Apple keyboard = I need a new keyboard. ISO 105 layout for Mac (CMD and function keys at the usual spots) are the main requirements. Any suggestions?4
-
tfw you predict a windows build fucking shit up more than usual 3 days early using twitter

I'm a junior, now getting used to the idea of having to finish something in the same day if it's urgent for production and therefore having to clock in extra hours.
It's depressing, in a way.. I'm hoping to avoid this as much as I can and just get work done within the usual 7.5 hours.2 -
Since I switched from Windows to Ubuntu 18.04LTS my laptop battery is draining faster than before. Are there any usual settings I can make, to improve battery life?2
-
I'm writing this in response to the article shared by @Christine
God!!! And I wanted to start learning web development. Should I even start with HTML? I mean.. ugh!
Any SANE web developer here who could share their usual tools for building a website.
And if you would use entire different tool sets for different sites, which ones would you use for which kinds of sites?
(Is this question too much?)7 -
iOS/native app devs!
How usual it is for your apps to differ from iOS UI guidelines? Our lead dev always throws a fit when he has to implement custom stuff, but I see popular games “shit all over” these guidelines all the time and do very well in popularity.
As I’m no expert, please tell me if it is generally accepted to not follow these iOS rules / use premade controls 100% of the time, so I know what’s up. Thank you.2 -
Stupid motherfucking Youtube, for some reason I now get two fucking scrollbars whenever I open a video, effectively splitting the screen in half. It's so fucking annoying!
But get this: it only happens when I'm logged in!
Even better: it only happens when I'm logged in with my usual account for watching Youtube! If I log in with another account, the issue disappears!
Get your shit straight, YouCunt!1 -
what do you guys think of rating your skills in cv as a graph?
like sql - 7.5 etc...?
i've just tried it and sent my resume to a couple employers but i'm not getting the usual response (more activity).
i also did a very honest review of my skills (according to 3 senior colleagues), so maybe the scores seem too low? how would you react if you saw someone with rather low scores? i'm asking this because developers and mortals probably view these scores very differently. Maybe some suggestions?4 -
Had a release retro today.
We had the usual Trello board with columns for "what went well, what was bad, what can we improve" etc.
columns for the bad and the improvements had 10-20 cards each.
column for what went well was empty.... -
Leaving things out of VCS. My usual folder structure is like this:
- Project name:
|-- env (virtual environment)
|-- Project name (git repo)
\-- (keys, credentials, etc.)
It makes sense, but after a while, more and more important stuff starts piling up in the outer folder (not version-controlled). -
As usual, the million-dollar question: whats the best laptop to buy for developers, in the price range up to $1,500?
I'm between a 2015 Macbook Pro, the new Dell Latitude or the Thinkpad T460 😕10 -
Fucking translation service!! (Wordreference)
This morning I got the usual gdpr thingy and I thought "ok let's have a look what this translation service is doing"
You damn bitch that fucking list contains dozens and dozens of rows and I have to fucking manually disable them one by one.
What the hell, did you hire a monkey to code this stuff you utterly incompetent company? I'm never gonna you this thing again4 -
So, next monday I will be starting a new project in my company, the very first I have to manage as a sort of project owner in addition to my usual develer rolem. I will be asked to manage the relationship with the customer and all' the details, issues et cetera. Well, I dont know if I am ready and I tought to ask here some advices. So, what do you experienced developers suggest to a fresh meat? (2 years experience pro it world)
-
So... the usual has happened and I've already got a wontfix this month. OTF PS3 FTP plugin "only supports passive mode, not active mode", will accept 500MB of uploaded data then close the port on passive mode. Active mode "is not supported" amd "doesn't accept connections" and passive mode "cannot possibly fail because it's better" and "must have been corrupted before being installed on my PS3."
Guess which mode works flawlessly?1 -
Happened today on the way home
---
*Doesn't feel keys in usual pocket*
Shit, where are my keys?
*Checks other pockets*
Oh, I put them where I usually put my wallet.
...
Shit, where is my wallet? (I forgot it on my desk 🤦♂️) -
DevGoals 2019
B awsome as usual and chill have fun wth coding not limited to working hours.
Make coding my prority one hobby... Then the rest 😉
Starting wt contributing to an open source project... -
Lol. Another day, another (or just the usual) big tech company just takes us from behind.
This time? Oh Google is just spamming me because they "found malware" on a tracking code. There's nothing. Except competition.
They had to email me about every "malware" in EVERY fucking workspace version. In random order, eventually effecting the live version. Thanks. I really needed those 30 emails to know. -
Yesturday when I got off work I turned my PC off and it installed some updates... Came in the today turned on the PC and the fucking Win 10 instantly crashes with Sadface of Death "could not run critical service"
Recovery does not work as usual... No safe mode no nothing!
Fuck you Microsoft just stop puting your nose in to hardware and fix your fucking software! Now I have to reinstall all of my development tools and other work related shit... Thank god I pushed my changes! -
Blast from the past: when desktop publishing started to take off back in 1987: https://books.google.se/books/...
That was in the days when paper still was the usual destination for written information. -
Have opted for Big Data and analytics this sem as Dept. elective. Can't understand anything in the lectures(as usual). Any suggestions how to start learning?(books, tutorials, courses, etc.)1
-
it seems in India isps are imposing laws incorrectly regarding torrents.
does any one has something to say abt it?
I believe when I will be in india I will be eligible to download all the tv series and movies as usual. -
Lack of communication, well the communication is there via instant messaging and some video calls, but it's much slower than usual.
And the lack of free coffee of course. -
Wow. Wikipedia lists Aaron Swartz among diseased Wikipedians, with the usual condolences page. It's updated to this day.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... -
goat cheese on rolls
crown royal and coca cola with a lot more crown royal than usual.
warm for the season humid night.
yay.
crickets would be nice.4 -
Hello, instead of my usual nihilistic fuckery, I actually have a question that you guys may be able to answer.
When uploading images in Chrome this morning I got the two prompts pictured below. One is in google voice, the other is in gmail. I searched online for answers but oddly enough there is nothing satisfactory.
The promp is 'upload failed server rejected.' This problem goes back as far as 2012, but today it happened to me for the first time. Thank you3 -
All you front end devs who work with dedicated design teams, what's you usual workflow? Do the designers pass on the UI kit with all the assets and dimensions and you clone the thing using whatever stack you're using or do you all decide the specs on the fly looking at the general visual structure of the design?5
-
relativity of paths:
the fact that "paths relative to where the user is launching the program from" EVEN FUCKIN EXIST is such a fuckin idiotic thing.
it means that there's ONLY SINGLE ONE SPECIFIC (unknown to the user) PLACE FROM WHICH TRYING TO RUN A PROGRAM WON'T FAIL.
which is the most moronic thing ever.
and, as usual, linux bullshit turd smell. nobody except linux geniuses could have ever come up with such galactic size bullshit.23 -
My life has turnt into a dangerous signal processing. Well, nothing out of usual just turn me into a hole.

What kind of projects are mostly affected by the pandemic?
I believe there must be massive layoffs in travel related projects. Or I'm wrong and it's business as usual (IT part)?1
