So, appearantly "excel" is a programming language.
And I am rejected couse "I don't even know main computer programs".
Someone found my curriculum online, hooked me into an interview. I go there and the dude that handles the interview asks me: "So, why do you want to work with us?"
Man, I don't even know myself.18
So I cracked prime factorization. For real.
I can factor a 1024 bit product in 11hours on an i3.
No GPU acceleration, no massive memory overhead. Probably a lot faster with parallel computation on a better cpu, or even on a gpu.
4096 bits in 97-98 hours.
Verifiable. Not shitting you. My hearts beating out of my fucking chest. Maybe it was an act of god, I don't know, but it works.
What should I do with it?233
Here's a recent interview I had for an Android Developer job:
I: Interviewer, M: Me
I: hello, welcome
M: hi, thanks
I: do you know Kotlin?
M: yes, I've been working with it for 1.5 years and have written 3 projects in it
I: do you know RxJava, Dagger, Retrofit, and how to make Custom Views?
M: yes, I'm comfortable with them *explains*
I: do you know Room?
M: yes I do, I've done a lot of practices in it, but unfortunately have never needed to use it in production
I: what architecture do you use? Do you know MVP?
M: I'm currently using MVVM, but not MVP. I've debugged projects in it so I know what's going on in it
I: ok, do you have any questions for us?
M: how did I do?
I: I'm sorry sir, but you're not even a junior here
M: what? Why is that?
I: well you don't know Room and MVP?
M: I said I know them, just haven't used them in production.
I: well you have 3 years of experience but you dont even know Kotlin!
M: Kotlin was your first question and I said I have 3 projects in it. Did you even check the samples you asked for in the job posting?
I: SIR YOU'RE NOT A GOOD FIT FOR US, THANK YOU FOR COMING.
So many people are applying for computer science majors that it's making me nervous.
My classmates don't know shit about tech yet almost all of them are applying for CS. It's even the most popular ranked major in the US.
I don't think I stand a chance against them. They all have higher GPAs than me, and they participate in clubs and sports.
If those cave people get accepted I'm not going to be too happy about it.64
The look on a client's face when they realised that I program[med] sex toys for a living was pretty priceless.
Their attitude change, however, cost them a contract. Programming sex toys is no different from programming anything else.
Why do you have to bring in your religious views or my previous contracts into the conversation? All I'm doing is a network audit for your company. I'm not gonna hide a dildo in your closet, or something. I'm supposed to only be around for a few days, too.
Guess I had too many cooties, with how harsh they burnt that contract and bridge.
Boss: can you try doing X and y?
Me: no that won't work.
Boss: you haven't even tried it yet
Me: I don't have to because I know it won't work because this and that
Boss: can you try anyway?
Me: that'd waste alot of my already little time to finish this
Boss: just try it anyway
Why hire devs if you think you know shit better?9
Someone donated to me today for one of my open source projects.
I don't even know what to say. Thank you 🙏5
You know what's fucking scary?
If you change a big block of code and it compiles, all tests are passed and you don't even get a warning.
Just wasted 20 Minutes because I tried to look for a mistake6
I don't even know if this should be a rant or a good thing, but here it goes:
my boss smokes (legal) weed in the office, under the AC, so the smoke goes up and it spreads all over the place => we all get a bit stoned8
update for all that care:
I have successfully gotten android studio to run on a chromebook.
don't ask how.
don't ask why.
don't even ask.
but know. it's working, and it was worth it.19
People who don't understand what I code or who don't even know what a freaking "code" is, telling me how to do my job!! Then my reaction will be like -2
I now know another person's password without even wanting to.
He was sitting in the row in front of me, logging into our course page and then *brrrrraaaaapppp* - ran his index finger along the top number row and hit enter.
I don't even know what to say.13
No Mr. Uber, I don't want anyone even my family to know when I am riding nor I want to know when they ride.3
So this is what I received from a very bad recruiter.
I don't even know why I covered the details, this deserves to be public xD
Also, consider that this message came with <no subject>..6
I fucking hate python and myself even more. Python is easy they say, Python has nice syntax but fuck you . Fuck you seriously I cringe if I see non-c-like syntax. Every time I leave my comfort zone I get fucked over by damn semicolons. Fuck this imports i don't know your damn library. But god damn In far too advanced for hello world. There are two versions and the lib I want to use is incompatible? Well fuck me? That kind of shit never hit me on PHP. Damn me! Fuck you python. I want to know you but you fuck me harder than life. GEHÖRT? DU FICKST MICH HÄRTE ALS DAS LEBEN DU HURENSOHN!!!!
What is even your problem? Indentation? Well thank you for not having braces! I mean come on I try, I really do. I know you are different but every thing I want to learn about you is either for uber beginners or so advanced I don't even know what's going on. Do magical shit in a few lines? What the fuck is in those packages? A wizard full filling whishes like "plz make this work"?
But don't worry you cum snorting unicorn as much as I hate you I'm more mad about me for not being a descendant of fucking slytherin!14
A recruiter asks for my LinkedIn credentials to save me from the hassle of updating my profile.
Is this the new 'send me your cv in .doc format so I can write whatever I want in there'?
I'm not even looking for a job and I don't know who you are! Fuck off!3
Some dude in my university used Squarespace to make a webstore, presented it as his final exam in Web developement and passed with flying colors.
They didn't even look up the code or anything, just gave him max score and that's it. I hate my school...
Edit: a friend just told me that the guy didn't even made the site. He paid someone else to do it.
I honestly don't know what makes me more sad14
Part 2 of my boss's stupidity
*Wait! Wait! Wait! What!?*
*You actually reinstated my class?*
Another late night and another set of pulls I needed to do in order to get caught up with the rest of the world.
I had just finished up dealing with a strange bug and had finally fixed it.
"I need to get caught up with my boss," I thought to myself.
I quickly git pull from my boss and a merge conflict occurs.
"Oh, ok that's fine." I say, "that's nothing too odd."
"Wait! Wait! Wait! What!?" I shouted inside my head
I couldn't believe what I was seeing, there was a huge chunk of code that was being completely replaced.
"You're actually reinstating my class?" I nearly shouted.
"What!?" my girlfriend shouts from the other room.
"Come here a second, let me show you what it is," I shout back.
She rushes in real quickly, and I point at the code that was being changed.
"Remember that really long ass rant I made about how my boss had completely removed all of my code because he thought it was spaghetti?" I said
"Yeah?" she replied quickly, visually astounded by my excitement.
"He fucking put my class back into the code!!!"
"Wow!... I guess you beat him, huh?" she said.
"You better fucking believe it, but you want to know what's worse?"
She cocked her head sideways, "what?"
"He fucking built it worse than my original! The names don't properly reflect what he is trying do and he's doing a failure job at trying to copy what I had done in my original. He clearly doesn't know about git revert" I said between bouts of laughter.
"This is too good, I'm putting this on devRant!" I said
"I'm not in the least bit surprised that you would." She replied back.
Rant rant = new Rant
rant.isRant = false // !!!
I woke up this morning after not thinking about my code for a day, and realized i had a flaw in my validation design. I fixed it before opening my eyes.
It's kind of amazing how not thinking about a problem can help solve it. Even if you don't know it's there!6
P.S. First Rant!12
Application has had a suspected memory leak for years. Tech team got developers THE EXACT CODE that caused it. Few months of testing go by, telling us they're resolving their memory leak problem (finally).
Today: yeah, we still need restarts because we don't know if this new deployment will fix our memory leak, we don't know what the problem is.
WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU DOING IN THE LOWER REGIONS FOR THREE FUCKING MONTHS?!?!?! HAVING A FUCKING ORGY???????????????
My friends took the time to find your damn problem for you AND YOU'RE GOING TO TELL ME YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS???
It was in lower regions for 3 MONTHS and you don't know how it's impacting memory usage?!?!?! DO YOU WANT TO STILL HAVE A JOB? BECAUSE IF NOT, I CAN TAKE CARE OF THAT FOR YOU. YOU DON'T DESERVE YOUR FUCKING JOB IF YOU CAN'T FUCKING FIX THIS.
Every time your app crashes, even though I don't need to get your highest level boss on anymore for approval to restart your server, I'M GOING TO FUCKING CALL HIM AND MAKE HIM SEE THAT YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT. Eventually, he'll get so annoyed with me, your shit will be fixed. AND I WON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH YOUR USELESS ASS ANYMORE.
(Rant directed at project manager more than dev. Don't know which is to blame, so blaming PM)28
When your classmates don't even know how to code HTML and CSS effectively but they want to learn how to hack...
They think hacking is about breaking into other people's computers and stuff... sigh... the people I have to deal with...14
During a random meeting for a project:
PM: We'll need you to learn Go for this project. It says you know python in your job skills, so it should be easy.
Me: Uh, hiiii. I'm in security, not development. Can't help you, I really shouldn't even be here.
PM: I think Go has security built-in, does that help?
Me: ... I don't know, you need a developer.
PM: Do you know any Go people?
Me: I think that's something you should know.
- Silence enters the room -
PM: Yes perhaps, but you don't know anyone?
The company i work for has a jenkins server (for people that don't know jenkins, it's an automated build service that gets the latest git updates, pulls them and then builds, tests and deploys it)
Because it builds the software, people were scared to update it so we were running version 1.x for a long time, even when an exploit was found... Ooh boy did they learn from that...
The jenkins server had a hidden crypto miner running for about 5 days...
I don't know why we don't have detectors for that stuff... (like cpu load being high for 15 minutes)
I even tried to strengthen our security... You know basic stuff LIKE NOT SAVING PASSWORDS TO A GOOGLE SPREADSHEET! 😠
But they shoved it asside because they didn't have time... I tried multiple times but in the end i just gave up...13
I joined last night, this place its just insane, I don't even know how I managed to go through life without it... This is it, I found my place on earth; devRant...
Neighbor: So what do you do for work?
Me: I'm a software engineer.
Neighbor: Oh I don't even know what that means. What exactly do you do?
Me: I write code for Fortune 500 companies while sitting on my couch in my underwear.2
I'M FUCKING SICK OF HOLDING MY SELF TO DON'T MAKE OTHERS LOOK LIKE STUPID, I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ANYMORE ,NEXT YEAR IS MY TIME TO STAND AND LET PEOPLE KNOW WHO I AM. IF YOU FUCKERS CANT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT EVEN THOUGHT THIS COMPANY'S PRODUCT ISN'T SOFTWARE BUT YOU ARE FUCKING WASTING A GOLDEN RESOURCE ( DEV TEAM ) WITH FUCKING USELESS CRUDS AND USELESS SITES NO ONE FUCKING CARES ABOUT I'M GONNA LEAVE.17
Once one of my coworkers tried to prank me while i was afk and changed a line in my code.
Good old habits of mine instantly realized the file's unsaved status and i could ctrl+z without even knowing someone edited my code.
Don't mess with a developer. We know our shit.2
You know one of the things I love about this community is?
We have such a diverse group of people and even when those who don't speak English natively, they try to on the app as much as possible keeping it consistent. Even when they make some mistakes, no one's a dick about it (from what I've seen), which is awesome!13
My classmate don't want to use devRant well ok it's not for everyone (somebody might not like it) but now he said that git is stupid thing and hard to work with and that he save everyproject on hdd.
I tried to explain but oh well yu know answer "no still bad"
How can he be even a dev ?6
Biggest distraction while coding?
When a colleague (or even worst, your boss) decide to staring at your monitor...
I don't know you guys, but I suddenly become disable and not capable of using a keyboard.
Leave me f*king alone!!!3
What manner of imbecile writes a password reset function that passes the email and password as god damn query parameters, in the email link....1
12:30pm - I can't code any more, what does this function even do?
12:45pm - What's a function?
12:59pm - I still don't know what a function is
01:00pm - *Eats Lunch*
01:05pm - My code makes perfect sense8
After I showed my private desk last already, here still my place at work. Meanwhile I don't even know how to program productively with less than three monitors under Windows.
But now you know one of our wonderful corporate wallpapers. And yes, my desktop is always so empty, that's no fake.4
Yesterday a friend of mine asked if I could help her with an assignment. The goal was writing shortest path agorithm in excel. I told her I don't know excel or VB but I will look into it. I didn't even know that we can code in excel 😅 After 1,5 hours of research and coding I writed a well documented code that does the job (with n^2 complexity of course). I feel VERY motivated after this. Because I did well job at an unexperienced environment with a language that I don't know!
Tldr: my new favorite ide is excel.3
Switched to DuckDuckGo, because Google thought it would be nice, to ban the Proxy IP of our company (because you know, many requests) from searching and putting us behind these captcha monstrosities. I don't want to captcha myself out of every query I have for goddamn 2 minutes with slow ass fading images.
Turns out, I like their service even more.9
I honestly don't get too mad when people aks me to do things like install programs for them. This is not my dayjob, but when you think of it, they're right when they say "you are a programmer so you must know how to do that". We do know how to do that. When you have a question about plants and you know a farmer, you are going to ask the farmer, even though he is not a gardener. He will know. Just as we know how to use computers very well.2
The cleaning lady saga continues yet again..
Here in Belgium, cleaning ladies are paid with cheques. All fine and dandy, and apparently the parent organization (Sodexo) even migrated to digital cheques. Amazing!!!
If only they did it properly.
Just now I received an email with my login data.
Password: I won't reveal the amount of characters.. but it's not even hex. It's just uppercase letters, and far from what I'd deem even remotely secure. Hopefully I'll be able to change that shitty password shortly, and not get it mailed back, even when I ask for recovery. Guess I'll have to check that later - the person who made that account was pretty incompetent when it comes to tech after all. Don't ask me why they did it instead of me. I honestly don't really know either.
With that said, this is a government organization after all... Can I really expect them to hash their passwords?24
17 minutes without single break. That was longest nightmare for me. I had to write 6 lines of code... You know how that feels. My fingers were bleeding and my eyes were burning. Oh maan, I don't even want to remember that hard days.
Customer: We don't know what we want, but we want it yesterday.
Sales: No problem.
I'm not even mad or stressed anymore. You didn't ask me before, so why should I bend and break, so that you don't have to deal with staving the customer. Most of the time, he changes his requirements or is the bottleneck himself, anyway.2
Let's do photorealism they said,
It'll look beautiful they said,
Fuck it, we're going with low poly. I'm not rendering one fucking tree, for three god damn hours!
(That's presuming that it doesn't crash during that period)
And yes I know it doesn't actually look that photorealistic, but hey, give me a break I just started. Plus I don't even wanna know how long it would take to render if it was done to look really fancy.13
So, apparently we had this important meeting with a client offsite this morning, I was "told" yesterday but nobody thought of creating a calendar event or sharing emails about it. I forgot, I don't even know the address or the hour.
My boss and this sneaky front ender came by at 11am joking about me not remembering.
Me: wow, I forgot. If it isn't on the calendar I don't even know it exists.
Turned to my screen and got back to work.
Fuck this shit.1
I'm OK with C language, but I refuse to learn Shell. My co-workers who use shell don't talk to anyone and look like zombies. Hell no. I don't even know their names after working 2 months together. Fire me.10
You know what really, really sucks about my school? Rant#00
I'm in my last year now and they removed one CS/IT lesson. Now I have two fucking 45min lessons (instead of three) of learning what I'm actually interested in.
Even worse: They don't provide and LK ("Leistungskurs" == advanced course) for CS/IT. Not like for Maths, English, German - okay but LATIN AND SPORT? Wtf
And this school calls themselves a MINT-school (Maths, IT, Natural Sciences, Technology).
EVEN WORSE: The 12th graders now don't even have a basic course CS/IT.
Fuck you school.8
When I see two fields, one for username and one for password, I expect I can fill them out immediately subsequently with only a tab in between. While typing my password I DON'T want to get sent to a page where I can enter my password only: I was entering it already! Sometimes I even make it until I pressed the enter key that was supposed to log me in, but then I'm kindly requested to reenter my password. At that moment I not-so-kindly think: FUCK YOU Microsoft, you should know better. Even when logging into Visual Studio for fack sake3
What the fuck man.
Why even I am working with this assholes.
Yesterday,Our technical support guy reinstalled windows(I don't mess up with technical issues because then it will be my part time job,so I show that I don't know anything about hardware).
He installed fucking 32 bit window,He was trying to installed 64 bit version thunderbird.
He wasted my whole day.16
That's it. That's all I have for my home server setup. I don't even know why we have that sticky red thing, but today it came handy. And now I can SSH anytime I want, it's never going get shutdown 😂2
Boy do I love when Snapchat sends me a snap telling me happy father's day.
I don't even know who my father is but thanks for the reminder assholes.
I wonder what dipshit thought that sending everyone on Snapchat messages during all sorts of holidays that not everyone celebrates was a good idea.9
I've pretty much completed my profile here on devrant... I'm just 3000 or so away from my final item
I don't even know what it is exactly.9
Fucking fuckers on Stack Overflow...
I kind a use SO every fucking day, helping people with horrible formatted (don't even start about content) questions, and then when I got a single fucking question once all three years, no fucking cunt out there is willing to help.
Some dumbass even downvoted my (in my eyes) total reasonable, perfectly formatted, good written question.
I fucking hate it, that I spend so much time on that fucking platform, whilst nobody is giving me some help.
Fucking fucker cunts....!!!!
I've fucking got about 2,5k rep, I fucking know, in what fucking dimensions I can ask a fucking question.
This girl I don't even know much sent me this code. She is not a coder and has never written any code before by the way.
abhinav= v bad;
v bad= temp;
Is this what a modern day love note look like? 🤔🤔7
Religiously disconnect after work... I don't even have my work email on my phone... If I'm not in the office I don't want to know about it...5
Windows, if you can't even do as much as mounting network shares *after* the network comes up, don't you fucking dare to tell me that I can't disable my firewall. Some people may actually know what they're doing and maintain that elsewhere, you know?7
Client: I don't know programming. But I think you should make the button more fancy?
Me: ... I am not Harry Potter, don't imagine programming like magic. And you ain't even a programmer...
Daily conversation with our precious client2
I hate being so insecure. I don't start developing an idea because I think I won't be able to do it, I don't code together with someone who is better than me because I think they'll make fun of me or think I'm doing it wrong, I don't speak up in class even though I probably, definitely, know the answer. I feel like I'll never get anywhere if I remain this way. Anyone have some advice? Thanks13
Went to a job interview for ASP.net even though I don't know ASP.net since they asked me to come. I got the job since I was the only candidate that knew what OOP is.
I don't really want to work there.5
When you work hard for something and you are sure that you gonna get it, but some ass licking guy who doesn't even know how to code gets it. Yes, it happened to me. I was working for an open source organization called PROBOT. I was working my ass off to get into GSoC with that organization. I created PR(pull request) after PR and solved most of their issues. But later on, I came to know they didn't even saw my single PR. Life surely teaches you some hard lessons but it's you who should not give up I would say. I do not regret working my ass off and writing those code and not getting into GSoC but I cherish those moments where I learnt many new things. And as for that organization, I would say they don't even know how to manage. This was my exact reaction when the result came3
6 months after starting developing my webapps I found out that I have one competitor that runs basically the same application service 2,5years already. There was no clue of him when I researched the field just came across by accident today. I feel quite desperate now he has features I didn't even think of and which are amazing. I don't know what to do now7
Today our team got the best grade in our Windows OS presentation in English.
I have talked about the security aspect and got an A.
The other two comrades got an A and an A-.
My English teacher told me that I was perfect. That made me so fucking proud. Oh god.
I don't even know why I'm writing this lol4
Stupid customer insists that the website must have the *same fucking UI* even when seen on mobile.
Where the fuck are your eyes, don't you see that a big complex table just doesn't fit the fucking screen of your crappy phone??? Of course it needs to be layed out differently.
I don't know if I should politely reply "no", or just don't give a fuck, deploy it, and then let him realize how much he is stupid.6
Someone told me a teacher wants to meet us at the library at 3:00pm. I went there and there was a yellow van with some of my friends and a teacher. Then
T = Teacher
M = Me
F = Friend
T: Your name is not on the list.
M: What list?
T: You didn't attend yesterday's meeting.
M: I don't know there was a meeting yesterday.
T: No excuses.
T: No excuses(slightly louder). I gave a message yesterday.
M: I didn't even receive the message. How do I...(even know about the meeting)
T: *interrupts* Your name is not on the list. You don't have permission from the administrators to go. You cannot go.
F: He doesn't usually attend the meetings.
(I don't even know the existence of the meetings before, no one told me)
T: You must attend the meeting next time.
M: When? What time?
T: I will send a message if we have any meetings.
M: *Flat-toned* Okay then. *keeps minimal facial expression then walk away steadily*
Inner me: What an ignorant teacher. She should at least listen to my REASONING, not treating them like empty excuses. I don't even know where they are going, I don't even have the intention to join them. Then she thought that it's my fault. I don't know what I don't know.3
Manager: yo I need a time line for this shit.
Me: I don't know how long it takes.
Manager: tell me how long it takes.
Me: I can tell you what can be done in next couple hours. I don't even know what will happen tomorrow.
Manger: now tell me this time shit.
Seriously, dear fellow ranter. How do you estimate timeline? Your timeline is changing.5
So, you may know this already...But fuck CNET once again! Don't get me wrong, even if I loved the auto-playing video ads I would still be angry af. The site loads with a decent layout at first, but then in a second it changes and all I get is a pile of shit broken because of some <sarcasm>really great</sarcasm> CSS.
P.S. Yeah, I know it's probably my ad blocker killing something that is vital for the site to keep it's shape, but I don't care about that at all. I'll never give it up. (Or let it down, for that matter)11
I only see rants here about people who post to StackOverflow. I use it a lot but all questions i wanted to know were usually answered so I just had to search for them. I never posted something there and don't even have an account. Anyone else doing the same thing?4
There's a guy who uses a small electric scooter to speed across the office. It's less than 30 meters to the other side of the office.
Guy is going to hurt someone at some point. I don't even know the guy but I can already tell he's a dick.3
Getting called by my dad "how do I make a local network with my phone?"
"I don't fricking know, I don't have your phone"
"Well you are the tech guy"
Me: So... do you want a website, right?
Me: ...but you don't know how it should look, right?
Client: Ehm... correct.
Me: ...and you don't even know what color should I use?
Me: ...and of course you can't link me a website you like which I can base on.
So now I have to invent something randomly that somehow will be the exact same thing you would like to see. Nice.1
I don't know how to feel about it. What story it tells? Python is so easy that even vandals use it or maybe someone bleed on the wall how much she/he hates python. Or maybe it is scream of inner Vandal closed in cubicle who works with AI and blockchain for life's. What is the story behind this?6
So I finally got my senior project approved by my school's assistant principal (the one who deals with every student's project) and he said that the three forms of evidence I suggested were not enough. A quick summary of my project: I'm supposed to make a game engine in Java before April of 2017. Every student needs 3 forms of evidence that they did the project so I suggested screenshots of my work, the finished source code, and pictures of me actually working on it. In addition to all of that I would have a ton of documentation and sample projects to test different features of the engine. Well, he doesn't really understand that for a high school student, that's already enough work for a couple of years and thinks I need more evidence. So what does he do?
He requires me to find at least 5 people to test the engine and complete a survey about it. This normally wouldn't be a problem, except I'm a high school student and don't know more than 2 people who are fluent enough in Java to work on a game. And, I have to finish the project before January now to give the people enough time to work with it.
Long story short, I'm not even out of high school and I'm already experiencing the struggles of dealing with non-technical people.10
Just had a scolding from an asshole behind the wheel for using my old BuzzyPazz instead of their new electronic system. I didn't go with the invitation earlier because I don't want a central server to know where I am, and when. Yet that mofo is gonna threaten me with sanctions because I value my privacy, and even showed that I'm a legitimate passenger that's properly paid to get on the fucking bus?! Catch the right "criminals", motherfucker!!! 😤1
That feeling when you get job offers because programming is a mere interest in LinkedIn. I don't even know any advanced languages yet!
Holy fuck I look forward to this career!5
Been studying front end development on my spare time for the past 8 months and tomorrow I got a interview for a position at a company as a junior Dev.
Even if I don't get it, it tells me that I'm on the right direction.
One can change their life by putting in some work.
Not a rant, I know but I'm so happy I felt like sharing. Soon I'll hopefully have some rants to share ;)8
I'm currently working in call center. Making them a management system for agents. I'm the only developer there. No one asks about the progress even the owner doesn't know a thing about softwares. This gives me a freedom to do work when I want and how fast I want. But because of this I don't care anymore about the little things. and I have adopted some bad programming habits during my stay. Should I quit or what?6
Stages of being a self-taught developer.
first: you think you have taught yourself enough to apply for a job.
second: A Company actually believes you. Evidence? They hire you.
Third: You realize you don't know anything.Evidence?
Me in my head
I thought I was good at this. I don't know anything. I should probably switch back to nutrition(my previous job). Why am I struggling with this? Who even struggles this much with APIs??8
People have been making fun of me for not having WhatsApp. They say that I am 'behind in technology', 'old fashioned' and that I don't know anything about computers and modern technology because I don't use WhatsApp.
They even kinda make fun of my family. One other family who made fun of us owns both Google Home and Amazon Echo.
What the heck is even going on anymore?
Anyway I am gonna put lights on a fez and wear it to school on monday.
When I think how big companies like Google, Amazon, Netflix manage all their services so well (all those load balancings, caching, etc. ), I feel so bad I don't know anything about it. I don't even know how people decide which technology to use. E.g., for a scalable Web app, one can use Node.js or maybe Django (but not definitely Flask, I suppose). Also, which DBMS to use, how to write flawless APIs. You see, I am just beginning my career. Any recommendations (books, videos, etc.) that teach these things? Please help.4
Do real interviewers (I mean those who are smart and have some experience) still ask questions like "what are your weaknesses"?
Dumbass, why the fuck should I declare, not just to you but also to myself, that I have some particular weaknesses? I know what I'm not good at, and I'll keep trying to improve. But unless my weakness is that I get a massive boner during team meetings, you don't need to know about it. I'm not telling you. Just know my strengths - that's enough. If you're just following a standard list of interview questions that you didn't even come up with, stop pretending to be an interviewer for heavens' sake.8
I think the actual interview is very important, maybe even more than the CV.
Be friendly, and VERY honest. Say only the truth. If you don't know something say something like "I didn't come here to lie, to be honest I don't know x".
Even make fun of yourself if you can.
And have a life plan, a goal. And tell it to them (they will ask you).
I can give you my example.
I come from graphic design, now studying webdev, and I needed work. I sent my CV to a digital media website, and I got the interview - to work in video, whitch I never did in my life.
The interview went really well and we even laughed together.
I had to learn how to record and edit video while working, but I got the job...
(Of course it helps if you actually know something lol)
I like obj c more than I like Swift. I don't know why and even tho it is the same API I find obj c more intuitive and useful since it is a strict superset of C and C is very useful.
Not to say I don't like Swift. I like it. I just have something against mobile OS APIs really6
I am glad to see all the pent up anger toward project managers. I quietly rage against them daily. I have even made up acronyms like "LIS" for "like I said", "DBR" for "Drive by requests" and "OSR" for "one sentence requirements". I write them on my white board and the don't know what it means.8
So yesterday I was testing my friend's app which as said by him is 100% okay.
I found 48 major bugs and reported him. His reaction was "Dude these are just minor issues and client don't even know about it. See there is some real bugs?"
RIP to the app developer and the client.
If you don't even know what MySQL is, fuck off and let me do my job. Don't insist that you can't find the solution to the problem. That's why I'm here. Your incompetence and persistence are slowing me down and if you really want your stuff to be done on time, don't even dip your fingers into my codes. I know you may think that I need help, but your help is useless if you have zero knowledge and can't even understand the solutions given in stack overflow. I'm fine doing this on my own, so fuck off. Just. fuck. off.6
Fucking tutorials that simply skip thing completely.
Like how the fuck am I supposed to know how to run that that shit when you don't even mention how to build it and jump straight to the fucking debugging section.
Fucking hell, relate yourself to the people who'll read your shit, you non empathetic scum3
Man fuck Facebook, log on hardly ever, feel caged by family who won't let me permanently leave, and when I do log on it's always something depressing shit.
My phone auto jumped me back to devRant and some ++ action and cool new rants...so much better, even with the down votes from the "I don't know what I'm doing here" crowd.6
So I went through the first round Google interview process and was declined for not "finishing fast enough" even though I did in fact solve the problem in the allotted time.
Either it's a BS excuse and they were just interviewing me to interview me for a quota or there is some invisible time limit that I am not aware of.
Really annoys me when I just don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong and instead get what feels like cop out answers.4
A lot of things dev say are true, but this one I don't believe as much:
Many devs say that it's important for everybody to learn a bit of a basic programming language, to learn about computers and how programs are made. I disagree, I think that instead people should learn *how* things work. Ex, in my school people always use a VPN to get around the proxy. I don't care if they know basic statements, I think it's more important to learn how a VPN works. Most of them don't even know what VPN stands for. Am I the only one?3
My employer uses latest and greatest macbooks. It's fuking awesome. I wasn't a fan until I found the ease of android and iOS development on it. I even started using Atom for web development. And I bought a Mac mini for a dedicated jenkins server. I don't think I'll ever go back to windows. There's just no point. I know it's expensive but it gets the job done. No more fukin mac VMs on VMware. Fuk that shit.22
I label myself as a graphic designer. I can't even make a decent-looking logo for my portfolio. I know I don't need one but it's annoying.3
I wish I had programming friends in my life all I have are kids at middle school that dont know anything about programming and left alone to my mind about all the languages I know and I am left with home work that's like 9th grade math even though I'm in 8th annnd including science,English,And history PE don't mind but out of them all I wish I had programming friends yay 😒 looking forward towards 8th grade again 😒18
Man Fuck time zones, I don't even know where I belong anymore while keeping track of all of them at once.
Fuck You In The Ass Time Zone4
I'm absolutely loving the fact that my university is making me take their intro to programming course this fall when I've taken 5 programming classes in high school and already have intro to programming credits from a different university. Did I mention that I passed the AP Computer Science exam before taking even more courses? Do they not understand that I do in fact understand how to use recursion(the most advanced topic in their intro course) and don't need to spend a semester relearning what I already know? For Christ's sake they don't even get into OOP in that course.3
WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK. What is this dude talking about?! What am I doing with my life?!?!
Test what? What do I have to do? I didn't study this. I don't know what this API thing is. My life sucks. My job sucks. I suck. I'm stupid, because apparently knowing who or what this API is is essential for being a normal part of society.
I don't even.. oh someone pls kill me.
(No I don't want a detailed explanation what I have to do - I know this is not google and i wont understand it anyways and my husband will torture me with it in the afternoon. Just some sympathy for a finance person who has to deal with this would be nice)9
I work for a programming / design studio / tech and new solution company. We do all kind of new tech inventions.
Everyone is a tech guru, except my boss who don't know one single programming language, don't know even how to format a pc, never finished his school..
The other day we asked me how to change his phone ringtone..2
What a 'nice' feeling.. 15 mins before the conf call with a client, a coworker comes to me to ask how some feature is working. OK, wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't him developing it.. O.o I just know he was working on this, no details, no nothing.. Don't even know where in GUI to find the dialog in question.. So I asked him if he tested it and if it is working like he descirebed to the customer.. Guess what?! He didn't know the answer to either question.. nice... O.o
Don't know if I am experienced enough to give any advices but still:
1. Whenever doing freelance work, always take some advance payments, even its for your friends.
2. Use git even if you think it doesn't apply to you. I started really late.
3. Contribute to open source. You grow when the community grows.
4. Be humble even if you are the best there is!
5. Whenever you feel you are tired of this shit, remember why you started. Don't give up!
Most importantly, take time for yourself, family and friends. It won't be lines of code that you remember on your death bed!1
Dude I want to ask you , It's possible for me to call myself as a software engineer if I always got a cancer when I try to create HTML template ? I'm suck as fuck on front-end, I can't even create a single HTML template even if you give me help with css framework. I don't know what to do with HTML and CSS, they're totally fucked up my life.16
Whaaaat? Now i can't even say in public that i would like one slave robot in the future because it would sound too nasty or pollitically incorrect?
Don't know about you but... python sounds more nasty to me...8
Well... Well... What a multi-talented personality...
Every connection I see on LinkedIn has these buzz words in their tag line: AI/ML, Cryptocurrency, Blockchain.
This guy even has Smart City...!!!
Don't know how many of them are legit... I just don't understand each of these techs are so vast... Still people manage to get expert in all of them in just few days... What's the secret...?8
Wtf is this? I searched for my problem and have to pay money to see the answer an 'expert' gave to another user who needed help? And I don't even know if it would solve my problem. That's definitely a great marketing strategy.
W8 wut?! O.o
How the hell is someone gonna hack my computer using calculator?!
Also WTH?! I don't even know what that built in admin BS is in win10, let alone how to log in with this o.O4
The IT department at my school doesn't know anything on Ubuntu or even Linux for that matter.
I asked them how I could connect to the WiFi on Ubuntu, cause I couldn't connect and they just said there was nothing they could do.
After that I spend two days to figure out how to connect and finally I got it working.
Next time I don't ask if they can help. I just ask for the settings and do it myself...1
I've used a Mac for 2 months and already love it. I've been a Windows user for like 10+ years but holy fuck, Windows is a giant pile of flaming fucking trash. Looking back, I don't even know why I continued to use it after the launch of that absolutely abysmal "OS" they called Windows 8.12
Today morning my sales manager calls me and tells there is a bug in one of the integration module and he tells the client has called us yesterday pls come early to office today and fix it. I asked which end point they have issue, he replies I don't know. I don't know what is the bug where is the bug, but there is a bug when they send data to us, pls find and fix it before 11 am. The worst part of this is that integration module I never worked on and the person who developed it has left the company long before and there is no documentation. when I go to that folder I see many controllers and many end points. now how will I figure out the issue 😂 I don't even know the work flow of that integration. the bug reporter (my sales manager) don't even know at what end point what issue happened.1
Sololearn has probably the dumbest community I've ever seen...
I know that there are lot of beginners who just started learning programming, but if you can't even use the app, I don't think they will be able to learn programming.
Also all these little kiddies who want to get some badass hackers but don't even know how to do a fucking course (There are lots of questions like "Where can I learn HTML" while they are right in the fucking app, like holy sheeet).
Sometimes I browse the Q&A just because there so funny and dumb questions. Really amusing!8
One of my interviews....
Interviewer: Do you know the welknown hack that increases the speed of embedded tomcat two times than default??
Me: what?? it even exists???
interviewer: yes... it exists... I know it... normally I share the answers with the interviewees... are you interested to hear the hack???
Me: Hell yeah...
Interviewer: ohh no... I will not share with you...
interviewer: I don't like your current boss...
Me: Fuck my life(inaudible)... facepalm..3
I seriously don't get it guys, can you answer to this post with your job and the os you use?
I'm a games developer and I'm happy on Windows,I couldn't even imagine switching to Linux or Mac, but everybody's on either a Mac or Linux.
I have to know why.42
Hello, I'm so nerd.
I want to build my avatar here. And even don't know what is a 'Rant' 😅.
But, I can tell a little story...
I'm learning js with an online teacher who has the most adorable Argentinian accent and now I talk like him.7
Honestly, stripe support is the best I've ever dealt with and I wish others would be exactly the same.
No level 0 support agents that don't know what the fuck they are talking about nor know their product to begin with, but instead every single person you chat with knows the API and even implementation details, just such a pleasant experience.1
Don't know if you guys have this kind of boxed up stuff inside like me. I have good friends, I have a good gf, I have great family and nice colleagues. But there are still so many things I don't share with them, especially the negative feelings I usually possess. Even here I don't share all the deep dark stuff.
As much as I wanna share my true identify and personal info here, the reason I'm restraining myself from doing so is this is the only place where I can say whatever really I wanna say in my mind. Except my blog but then my blog doesn't have any reader.5
I - Lets move your database to mlab. They offer 512mb database for free, every month. That is beyond your lifetime usage
Client - No. They Steal Data ( Like Facebook )
And client don't know a shit about mlab and development. Aware of quite a few names, bigrock, godaddy, bluehost. Even AWS is not in the list
- mlab is mongodb database service4
Just realized my handwriting skill is so bad -_-. i don't know how my classmate can write that good even we are dealing with keyboard everydamn class and homework.9
What exactly is a junior developer?
I mean what it depends on?
I ask because some colleagues have told I'm not junior but I have a junior role at my company
I don't even care and I don't like these classifications of devs but when someone asks me if I'm junior I actually don't know what to answer
I thought it was getting crazy when I read about ninja developer role but let's not talk about it
PS: I have been coding for 5 years now if it matters29
I just officially graduated from a web dev program and it feels...
Learned ES6, React, Webpack, service workers, offline databases, accessibility, (...bla bla bla)
And my knowledge with data structures and algorithms isn't even that great yet.
I look at the stuff I still don't know and wonder if I'll ever be comfortable with my level of expertise.15
Really glad the privacy community can make some impact. I still don't understand why venmo has to has any public transaction feed and I don't think they have public off by default still, but at least they are explaining things to users instead of being sneaky with their dumb social-network-ish-thingy that made ALL OF YOUR FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS PUBLIC!!????
I don't understand why they hid this whole public feed thing. I'm pretty privacy focused and I didn't even know that my transactions where public untill I saw https://publicbydefault.fyi/.9
You know when you get blocked from company's webmail, from their slack and everything they have... but they don't have the courage to tell you "you're fired"?
Well, now I do.
Almost a year working for someone, and they just locked me out - not even a "bye sucker!" or anything.6
Hi there fellow Devranters,
I am new here but my problem is pretty old. You see i stumbled into coding totally by accident. That was about 5 years ago. I have been learning ever since.
But the problem is that each day I just feel less and less of a programmer, more of a failure. I started with python, from sololearn to various ebooks. Then C++ and finally Ruby. But I still feeal weak.Despite the projects that I have worked on I still don't feel good enough. Most especially in Ruby.
I have a friend who is also into coding and coincidentally started about the same time as I did.The difference is that he learnt at university and I am self-taught.We used to talk a lot but we don't anymore,I feel too ashamed, an impostor even. I am scared he'll ask me something and I won't know anything about it.And I once taigjt him OOP. Right now I can't even code a hello world program without reading a whole ebook on python just to be confident.
We had dreams with my friend on a dozen or so projects that would have put us on the software dev map, but I keep avoiding him so much we have barely started any. I am afraid he'll find me too amateurish to work with.
I learn everyday to expand my knowledge,I have subscribed to a gazillion software related stuff on all social media platforms I happen to be in.But deep down I feel insufficient. I have been going through rants since the few hours I joined and it doesn't sound gibberish to me.Neither does other people's code when I go through it.But I am ashamed of mine I end up deleted after it runs successfully.
I just don't feel like a software developer, I don't even know what it takes to be one even. I learned 10 languages focused on 3, laughed at memes only devs get, used linux and loved it too but still I feel like an impostor. I used to be happy about all the things I taught myself, I onced dreamed of working at Google and later having my own startup back home. Now my friend and a couple of his friends have a small start-up and I feel ashamed of myself.
I don't feel like what I know is enough and learning only makes me feel worse, so bad I am scared of coding again now.Yet I just can't stop learning, I feel incomplete when I don't do anything dev related, but I don't even feel my speed is fast enough when I type on my keyboard.
Does anyone have a true measure to recruit freshly graduated? yesterday I had a technical interview with a candidate, the problem is he didn't know even the basic of coding in Java, like String equality and hashcode, he also didn't have a solid understanding of basic design pattern. But what made me want to give him a chance is that he seemed highly motivated and eager to learn. So I don't know what to do guys?10
I don't know if some people are incompetent or just simply dumb.
If you're not sure what to do, ask.
If every guideline for each workflow has been uploaded, read and watch.
Don't wait until the very last minute.
Don't even act innocent when I ask and you don't even know wtf I'm talking about.
Don't "disappear" and come back when the deadline is in few days.
Just stop torturing me with your horrible work ethics.3
First day as an intern: when I was introduced to everyone, some say they don't even want to know me and stay the fuck away because they don't care.5
Arg! Stack overflow why are you so full of argumentative dumb wits. I post serious question for a serious answer and what do I get? People who apparently know my situation better than me and have decided what I want to be done shouldn't be done. They don't even know what I am making. Either answer the question or move on!!!5
As a fresh graduate in Hong Kong, majoring in information engineering. I still don't know how to explain what my major related to... And don't even expect me to know any node , react , angular, docker, etc...5
I only finished my CS degree last year but while I was a student and after I got my degree I went for a few interviews and none of the companies really asked me what degree I have or didn't ask at all, some just asked what I was studying. All of the companies asked what I can do and what my skills are. If I can do it, they were happy to hire me even if I didn't have a degree.
So to answer the question, a degree is not useful if you still don't know how to program (for example) or if you don't know your field well. If you are good at what you do, you will earn crazy money with or without a degree.
I know a few people that don't have a CS degree but their programming skills are crazy good...probably much better than a uni graduate with a CS degree.3
3 days ago I started my first open source project. Even though it is nothing special (its a Telegram Chat Bot in NodeJS) i am feeling quite proud of myself. I don't know why, but i felt like sharing it with you guys.
(If you are interested: https://github.com/CptPie/... )6
best ad services to use? I really don't want to use google. even if they paid double, I wouldn't use them. anyone know? I'm talking about for websites and/or apps39
Well, I've been reading 'rants' in this community, and I'm amazed at how people discuss various softwares, languages, and sometimes even hardware!
I'd say I'm a noob. Can't even compare my 'coding knowledge' with what people know in this community, and I don't want to. I like that I'm now a part of this community. But I feel intimidated at times by the amount of things there are to learn! And I don't know how to start. I mean, we had a course on C for a semester, and I tried to build up on that myself. Other than that, I've been trying to learn web-dev, made a browser based game and tried to learn some back end. But I don't know exactly how to build up my proficiency with code, and solving problems, from here on out. So I would really appreciate if this golden community could help me out.(Not trying to flatter anyone. I don't express much, but all this is what I genuinely feel, and am grateful about.) I want to know how to go on about learning knew things in the realm of programming, and how I can apply it to solve actual problems. What language should I learn first? What will be valuable in this rapid-paced time? And some courses to help out?
I stumbled upon devRant one day out of nowhere, and I'm glad I did.8
Why am I so stupid? I still don't understand programming after three years of studying on my own. I even went to a programming boot camp and got a c.s Degree. Just tell me that I'm not a fit for programming so I can quit. It seems to me like I don't know anything, I feel like I can't learn for shit. What am I missing, why can't I write code on my own? Why do I always need people held my hand? Why I don't understand anything?11
You! Yes you.
I'm sure you know a lot of things I don't, even tho I have a pretty decent education and job.
Universal justice wouldn't be that I get fired and you get my job. You getting a (better) job would be universal justice.
So I wish you best of luck.4
Epic fail. I use a sleep timer in my music player and it occasionally fails to stop and clear the actual timer. It even perpetuates through when I actually turn off my phone, which is rather quite impressive. This is what I find when I turn my phone back on after the weekend. I don't even know how it's possible to have still been going when my phone is off... 🤔4
Algorithms teacher: I don't know how to work this thing. (computer) ... Students constantly have to go up front and help him do basic computer stuff. Even worse, he types with two fingers! Why education system must you suck so bad???6
Some days ago I was talking to the main IT guy at my new job, we still work on different dept so I don't know anything about him.
As I start come general chat I begin to realize He don't know what a repository is, what the GIT for github mean or even nothing about the ancient CVS.
I'm starting to worry about where am I.6
Swag idea: Rubber ducks with the DevRant face on them instead of a ducks face. No beak. Just a freaky slash where the beak should be. 👍🏻
The whole duck can even be the speech bubble orange!
I don't know about anyone else but I'd buy the shit out of this!4
Looking at my reflection on the laptop screen while it is being upgraded, and thinking that the career choice i made 11 years back was probably not a great idea.
I don't understand amazon-cloud, very little knowledge of DBs, can't write a single JS class without googling, block chain are meh, don't even know python, working with a team that abuses my framework in front of me, working 12 hour shifts for last 3 years... What is my life's purpose?2
I think I might actually have an addiction to code :S. I can't go a day without writing something just get a feeling niggling at me to write even if I don't know what to. I just opened a terminal on the nearest computer to write 'ls' and had such a relieving feeling, this can't be healthy.1
Does anyone else find Stack Exchange exhausting?
I start off feeling shit that I don't know how to solve my problem.... Then after asking on Stack, I end up feeling shit that I can't even ask a valid question!
Seriously, 80% of the effort is spent by everyone telling me it's a shit question, or off topic, or somehow wasn't asked in the correct way!5
You know shit is going to hit the fan if the sentence "c++ is the same as java" is said because fuck all the underlying parts of software. It's all the fucking same. Oh and to write a newline in bash we don't use \n or so, we just put an empty echo in there. And fuck this #!/bin/bash line, I'm a teacher. I don't need to know how shit works to teach shit. Let's teach 'em you need stdio for printf even tho it compiles fine without on linux (wtf moment number one, asking em leaves you with "dunno..") and as someone who knows c you look at your terminal questioning everything you ever learned in your whole life. And then we let you look into the binaries with ldd and all the good stuff but we won't explain you why you can see a size difference in the compiled files even tho you included stdio in the second one, and all symbol tables show the exact same thing but dude chill, we don't know what's going on either.
Oh and btw don't use different directory names as we do in our examples. You won't find your own path, there is no tab key you can press to auto-fill shit.
But thats not everything. How about we fill a whole semester with "this is how to printf" but make you write a whole game with unity and c#. (not thaught even the slightest bit until then btw)
Now that you half-assed everything because we put you in a group full of fucks who don't even know what a compiler is but want to tell you you don't know shit and show you their non-working unfinished algorithms in some not-even-syntax-correct java...
...how about we finally go on with Algebra II: complex numbers, how they are going to fuck up your life, how we can do roots of negative numbers all of the sudden and let you do some probability shit no one ever fucking needs. BUT WHY DON'T YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ALREADY HMMMMM, IT'S YOUR SECOND LESSON, YOU WENT TO SCHOOL PLS BE A MATH PRO ASAP CUS YOU NEED IT SO MUCH BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW PROPER SYNTAX, HOW MEMORY MANAGEMENT WORKS, WHAT A REFERENCE IS AND PLS FINALLY FORGET THE WORD "ALLOCATION" IT DOESN'T PLAY A SINGLE ROLE YOU ARE STUDYING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT WHY ARE YOU SO BAD AT ECONOMICS IT MAKES NO SENSE I MEAN YOU HAD A WHOLE SEMESTER OF HOW TO GREET SOMEONE IN ENGLISH, MATHS > ECONOMICS > ENGLISH > FUCKING SHIT > CODING SKILL THATS HOW THE PRIORITIES WORK FOR US WHY DON'T YOU GET IT IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BRAH4
I previously said I had no issues with dev teachers, but in fact I DO have them..
I want to get two things off my chest..
First: Last year I waited like 6 MONTHS to get my grades!! 6 FUCKING MONTHS!! And I wasn't even the only one who didn't get their grades!!
Second: Those dev teachers in high school are actually teachers who normally teach about physics, math and we even have a teacher who normally teaches history!! HOW THE FUCK AM I GOING TO GET A PROPER EXPLANATION ABOUT THE STUFF I SHOULD LEARN IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW IT YOURSELF!!
In defense for my teachers:
After 6 months of long waiting, I got my grades and they all were (and still are) an A!! Happy as fuck!!
My teachers at least TRY their very best to teach me something I don't know about the basic stuff.. And that's worth something right..2
Deciding whether to stick to being a web developer, or switch to something else
(thinking more like rocket software, or something with security (but maybe sticking with web), or some other cool sh#t
I don't know yet, what I do know is even when I'm creating an erp system, I find it very unsatisfying
"I helped create the software on that rocket"
"that hospital uses the system I've helped to create"
Sounds a lot more satisfying than,
"that company uses my 'warehouse resources manager'/'webshop'/'planning system'
But then again I don't know, I now have a stable job, know what to do and know the language we use.1
Complaining about people not understanding basic python syntax but I also don't know even know how to use fucking scratch.2
I see ads on marketing tools every fucking where.
Do I look stupid to you, Facebook and Google?
I don't fucking need them.
Who needs those stupid products anyway?
I even saw a reskinned XAMPP being marketed as 'local testing for your WordPress website', like what the actual fuck? Isn't that fucking scamming?
Oh, right. They were targeting WordPress monkies. Oh.
Anyway, please show me some more keyboards instead.
I've been in keyboard market for like 2 weeks you know.
Here, in place I live, almost everyone use windows and I think people don't even know any other OS exists. Whenever anyone have problem in they computer and ask me to fix it, some other guy approaches and says "Let me fix it, he has no idea about computers!" This pisses me off a little bit!6
Once I went for this women-centric hackathon that had to have at least one female member in the team. On winning, one of the other winning (male) devs commented on how I was probably there just to complete the team even when I did most of the work.
Don't know if it's the fact that I have green hair or the fact that I'm a girl.5
My family don't even know what dev is, one day my mom sat with me and I was working on my project using sublime. She watching monokai theme and asked me:
Why are these words in different color everywhere?
And I told her that which color means its a variable and which color means its a function, constant.
even though she didn't get a thing but I told her
I think I'm getting to the point to where I'm burnt out at my job. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to work. But it is very, VERY boring. And I'm starting to struggle to even pay attention anymore. I know it's important but I'm struggling to care. How am I supposed to do good work when I can barely even focus? Good code is not magic! I can't be barely holding my eyes open and expected to be worth anything.
I'm also still technically a junior developer which I have some issues with >_>6
On a shitty day where your brain doesn't work, have you ever looked at some code you wrote, and actually get intimidated by whatever version of you wrote that? After stumbling around most of the day, read some beautiful code, I admired it, then realized, holy shit, I wrote this?
"Yeah, I don't know who that was, it looks great, how the fuck did I do that, and will I ever be able to do it again"
Like, I don't think I can, definitely not today, write anything even close to that.
So my manager mentioned off hand that we might look at updating our company website to look a little more modern...
Me being me jumped right into action and now that I've finished I remember why I haven't built my personal site.. Fuck static web pages man...
Don't know why I did this, not even happy with it but I think it'll do, CSS and HTML is messy but fuck it, it works...1
I've been on holiday for almost 2 months now... I don't even know what a sleeping pattern is anymore😭😭
I have school tomorrow... I'll look like a zombie during orientation😂
Sometimes I feel I should switch to android from web even though I don't know anything about it but just feels that it's interesting morebthen web.
But then again I have those thoughts that jack of all and king of nothing is pretty hurtful in career building. Isn't it?5
I usually write my rants on a notepad, before I put them here, just for safety.
And I'm really glad I do so.
80% of my unpublished rants from the last weeks are so full of frustration and hate (mostly because of the clients + money relationship) that even I got kinda afraid of what I wrote.
Sometimes it's good that I'm good at holding up.
I don't know how long, though. 😕6
-Week before final project presentation.
Classmate: Dude, can you help me for our project? Its website.
Me: Sure, what you used?
Classmate: ASP. NET
Me: Ok....I don't know much about it but let me see.
Classmate: No, I just want your help with flowchart, sequence diagram and use case diagram.
*in mind: how the fuck m supposed to do that shit I don't even know much about your website*
(still I drew few basic flowcharts for them)
Received this from a magazine in the mail today and i don't even know where to begin with this so much fail...OK Vista that's where I'll begin...Windows Vista...5
Trying to cross-browser test a site is the most aneurysm enducing endeavour. They're all different. Safari manages to screw up everything. Firefox still seems golden and Chrome.... I just don't even know anymore.
I'm back! I had to move and everything went to shit. Instead of being a proper person, I shut down. I think I'm ready for devrant again, you guys are awesome and motivate me so much.. I don't even know why I stopped being on here. Oh well.. Hello there!3
I don't know what's wrong with me..
Within one day I basically lost interest in everything I do. I just don't see the point of all this anymore.
And the bad thing is, that I don't even know where that comes from so suddenly, everything is going fine, but still.. Life just feels like pain at the moment.
Don't want do drag down someone else with me and I sincerely apologise if it's too late to mention it at this point, just hope that maybe someone here can understand what's going on or give me some advice on how to fix my situation.7
Whenever I go back to Ruby I feel the excitement flowing through my body I don't even know why. If only Ruby can be used to write proper modern mobile apps. No no no Rubymotion.5
How fucked up are you,
when your vp of engineering doesn't even know how to show phpinfo webpage to test server setup.
change ode directly in production server,
then messed up and using excuse :
" I don't know because i am a frontend developer "
Then why you become a VP of Engineer !3
When random connections endorse your Skills on LinkedIn en masse. -_-
I don't even really know you...
what's your opinion on search engine marketeers? I think they're smurky and don't know how the internet works. I once had a 'SEO specialist' even telling me that my HTML wasn't correct because it didn't had the same markup as Google's documentation. For the record: it díd have all the microdata, but I used <ol> instead of <ul>. So yeah...1
We have a web application that will be deployed to the client premises. Part of the agreement is that the full source code will be provided. Now my manager asked me to hide/restrict the usage of a certain feature, and should not be hackable even if we give the full source code. Gosh help me guys, I don't know what I'm doing here.4
Do you just click the mouse wheel to close a tab even though it's a pain on your finger? I don't know where I got this habit from. I'm too lazy to point the cursor to the X button.6
Why does it feel like nobody uses D?
I love it. It combines the best bits of C++, Java, Ruby and even some Python. It still is C ABI and C++ ABI (ish) compatible. It can do everything you need it to. It's not limited like Java. It feels cleaner than C. I LOVE IT. But I don't understand why there's not much going on about it. Is it because it's not 100% stable yet? I don't know. AAAARGH7
Before I get lynched, this is for a friend, so don't murder me for mentioning the unholy word but, does anyone know anything about WordPress security, the oxymoron that it generally is?
Any help would be amazing and I'd love you all even more.6
People that contact me through LinkedIn trying to sell me some marketing shit or asking me about some issue with the service provided by a company that I started but with which I don't have any relation whatsoever since October 2016, which by the way is pretty clearly stated in my LinkedIn profile,…
DON'T YOU KNOW HOW TO FUCKING READ??? Stop pestering me about that company. I don't have anything to do with it, I can't do anything about it and, even if I could, I DON'T FUCKING WANT TO.1
Recruiters on LinkedIn:
"Apologies for this direct approach, I'm sure you're not looking right now and get messages like this all the time, but I have this opportunity that I think you'd be perfect for.
It's not in a language you know or a framework you're even aware of, but I know you're right for the job. It's not anywhere near you either. Hell, it's not even on the same planet as you, but fuck it, let's give it a whirl!
If you think this right for you, or not, just call me and we can talk some more about this (even though I have no idea what THIS is!). If not, forward this on to 1000 other people or you will be eaten by a dinosaur tomorrow!
To be honest, I don't really know who you are or what your skills are. I'm just spamming you through InMail.
Until now, I've never contributed anything to an open source project (or even created my own). My GitHub Profile is completely empty. I don't know why, maybe I'm just to "scared" of bad feedback.
But I really want to change that. Any good advice on how to do so? What were your first steps in this world?5
Some on here are very open about having addictions or using external things 'to keep going', be better or whatever else reason. I do too myself. (please don't get butthurt)
What do you think about weed & dev instead of - or even with - alcohol & dev?
BTW, I just noticed this (2 hours ago! I didn't know there are limits, which seems like a good idea..). I deem it obligatory to share. It's also the reason I'm asking 😁10
I hate when people use error, bug and glitch interchangeably. They are all different things people. Stop using such technical words if you don't even know their meanings.3
AAAAAAAA I want to talk with my friends about programming and software, but there is only one friend who understands even a BIT (Rest he doesn't just care about probably). It's driving me crazy that i can't talk with any of my friends about programming, because they don't know shit about it. I really can't make new friends either because i somehow have forgotten how to talk to humans (i'm extremely introverted lol). It's paiful when you have to explain a programming meme.8
Ok I don't know very much about what goes into developing a whole os, but I find it hard to imagine how you can fuck something up so badly like the win10 creators update. When suddenly the explorer and the menus don't have text displayed and you have to guess which one is the right folder. Do they even have testing?4
I don't know if I can be developer anymore. After I went to high school (one of the best in Poland) everything seems to collapse. My grades are poor. Especially on math and physics, but surprisingly everything Computer Science related is better than average. I also know how to code and I don't struggle with math used while programming. Heck, I even made my first game at the age of 10 in Visual Basic. I just love programming, computer science, etc, but after I went to high school I just don't know anymore...5
I just failed the same maths module for the second time
At this point after working really hard and even getting a private tutor I really think I'm not cut out for this shit.I just don't know what to do right now.6
devRant, Ineed your advice / help. This following year I'm going to study in the afternoon again. Since this year I don't have to do an intership, I wanted to start working in the morning. There are some problems though:
I never had a job
I'm still 17 so, even if I can legally work, companies don't like to hire underage people
I'm a punk, so even if I'm a really passionate person and I try to give my best always, I've already had been rejected because how I look (literally)
So, I wanted to know how can I build a professional looking CV and how to show to the requiter my GitHub (and now gitea) accounts, if I should clean my repositories, etc...
I'm basically searching advice on how to get my first job. Skills aren't the issue since I know how to code, manage networks, server infrastructures...
I don't know if I'm mentally connected to the other developers in the world, or maybe I sleepwalk and read devRant at night while I sleep, but every time I think something someone else has posted it a few hours before.
Even something stupid like "why the left is called left hand side? Doesn't make sense"1
I like react, I really do. But one thing I hate about it, is the number of decisions I need to make, I get so fucking confused whether to use redux thunk or sagaas, inline styles or styles components, redux or flux, even to judicially choose whether to use a state management library or not. It just lack of my own experience or don't know what. But this thing sucks2
So someone earned $8.82 by contributing to my open source project. I am not even mad, that's amazing! How do people even find those ways?
Got to know when I saw my project listed on busy.org, don't know how that works though.22
It's so frustrating, how people don't want to pay well for services and all, but what's more frustrating is that I don't even know how much to ask for most times! 😥
how hard can it be to make a section in html/css, so that it has a nice blurry background and a fancy title on it??😩
damn i've lost so much knowledge about html/css/js i can look up everything again😭 ... and i don't even know what to search for, that's how bad i have become😭😭13
I don't know the exact definition of procrastination, but what I do is probably not the norm. I tend to just do other things and not what I should do (is that even procrastination anymore?). For example on the weekend I should have done some homework and learned for chemistry but instead I developed my first app. I know that that's still something productive but not what I wanted to do.11
going through a rewrite is hell. the first stage you will be disgusted with how they layed out their code, contemplate the dump, eventually rewrite the entire thing, then cry throughout the entire process into your gallons of therapy iced tea.
I don't even know what half of these API calls are for.
Time it took me to write REST API and DB objects = 20 mins
Time it took me to to write a shitty Python 15-line script that parses a text file with regex's = 2 hours after I asked Stackoverflow
Don't even know what to say.4
Me: fuck man there are a shitload of ants crawling around my monitor wtf I don't even know where they are coming from.
Lead: *from his desk at the other side*: they are coming from the other side.
Hijoeputa que me vienes jodiendo la madre otra vez COÑO pero si como jodes COÑOOOOOOOOOO whshaisiwjsiwhwisidh dhdj#&#&@^#^@^#2
Sometimes I start to write codes and I even don't know how it's going to be end.
I just hope I find it along the way. 🙃2
Now every boss and client wants RWD on their sites... it's a pity they don't even know what it means...
"Why do this heading change size? I want it bigger!"
"the photo was ok side by side with the text. Why does it move above on my iPad"
"i can't zoom!"5
The only difference between a beginner dev and a veteran dev is that the beginner is afraid to touch what he doesn't know, while the veteran embraces it.
Accept that you don't know all and will never know everything. Even so, learn something new everyday. Fight your ego when it tries to make you keep only what you know and reject everything else. Fight that bastard.
The world needs less "I know", and more "I wanna know". And remember, devs should be in the "I wanna know" team.
sudo rm - rf ego
sudo apt-get knowledge-upgrade
I wrote a blogging platform around 3.5yrs back in PHP. My friend uses that, and apparently wants me to update the code. To which I refused saying that I am too busy. But the real reason is that it is one of the purest form of cancerous shit I ever wrote. I can't even look at that code now. Its like abandoning your own child, because it is too ugly... Here's a snapshot of the code, I don't even know what this does anymore..
Moral: Don't give your code to your friend no matter how shitty it is, you will end up providing lifetime support for it.1
Chrome browser was installed on my new PC at work by IT as a piece of software we get as default.
I've been having an issue where certain sites seem to fall SSL.
I contacted IT and their only response was that it must have been installed by mistake and that don't support it.
When I informed them that it was on every new PC I had seen they said that's not possible and I'm the first case they had seen.
WTF, our IT department is so screwed up that they don't even know what their rolling out to our PCs.
Even worse I've been made to feel like I'm doing something wrong by using software they don't approve of, even though they installed it.
I think I'm sending tonight getting an old laptop set up with linux do I can connect to the guest Wi-Fi at work. At least then the PC is under my control.4
I'm a developer, what have i been doind at my job the past weeks.TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE TO F*CKING FIX THE TEST ENVIRONMENT, SERVICES AND GIVE ME SOME PROPER TESTDATA, I cannot even test the stuff we need to replace because THERE IS NO WORKING TESTDATA AND NOBODY FEELS RESPONSIBLE TO HELP ME. Then how the hell am I supposed to rebuild this stuff if I don't know how it is working now >:(6
I want to switch over to Linux again, Windows just annoys me a lot lately. Thing is, I don't know what distro I wanna use yet.
I want one that is:
0. Security focused, so encryption, VPN and so on. (I know software could do the job, but would be nice if it comes with the OS)
1. Not hard to configure, but I should be able to configure it more when I want to.
2. Not too ulgy looking.
I have a little bit of experience with Linux, but I'm not even close a professional.
Looking forward to your suggestions!12
My first public website... Please don't say how it is bad because I know believe me :) There is probably XSS and SQL innection attacks so feel free to play with it. Also it is on serbian but you will figure your way in and out (if you even open the website)6
As a developer you're expected to perform all sorts of tasks that don't necessarily involve any coding or development at all. "A web form in Drupal? Uhm, it's got something to do with the web, right? Yeah, let's dump it on 'IT'."
So now I've been given this most frustrating task to use some form engine in Drupal. I have no access to the PHP code itself, and I don't even know what this form engine is called. All I know it's the crappiest of crap. The more I use it the more I hate it.
TL;DR I want to add a vcodec to FFmpeg but don't understand the how or haven't found the right resources yet.
I just learned the very basics recently and thought it is great for some automation.
For now, I want to use it to compress my anime collection. I found a modded version of HEVC (x265) for anime, which I want to include as vcodec. Unfortunately, even after researching it a bit, I don't understand how to do so. Does somebody here know how to do it?
Warning: Readme.me contains anime images
Recently joined a company (as a fresher), don't even know java spring but have been assigned user stories to be done in java spring batch. I know how to do my story normally in java but in batch it's like a nightmare.I am just unable to do it and today on my way back home,I started questioning if i am good at coding or not....Never felt so low about myself...
I'm not lazy. If you want me to build you a typeface - I'll learn how to do it... and I'll do it ~ but when I get files like this... my brain just goes blank. I don't even know how to rename these. Even if I automate it... I don't know what any of them are. : /3
I am writing a simple MVC Framework with PHP for learning and have a lot of small questions which are probably stupid or just typos...
Where is the best place to ask those?
I don't want to spam SO with this because most of the time I just have an error and don't even know what to ask.9
I feel incredibly frustrated. I just got out of school and I'm looking for a job, but I don't know where to turn to. I found landing.jobs, but they turn down every single application I send because I "don't have enough experience", even though I have 2 years worth of experience with .NET and Android development.
I like to think of you guys as friends, family even, and if you know any good place I could turn to to get a job, I would really appreciate it.
I feel frustrated and depressed, I've been sending resumes left and right and I haven't had a single shimmer of light, and I know what I'm capable of...
I'm sorry I'm taking this out on here, but I don't know where else to turn to...16
Can anyone suggest a good keyboard for coding? I would love something like the latest MacBook keyboard, I'm too addicted to that feel.
So I'd love short key run and a clicky feel.
I don't even know what to search (apart for the magic keyboard, which could be a waste since I'm gonna use it on windows, don't you think?)4
Gosh, I don't know how people can be active on social media. I want more free time x) even if I'll probably cook or draw instead... Yeah I'm not good with society :D3
Git is way too complicated, but even then I still get painfully annoyed when someone needs assistance with using it. Especially when they're using some GUI I don't know. You mean this thing can't rebase??2
Okay, I have to ask it here, because I don't know how to ask on SO so I don't get banned.
I have a user mode driver (a dll and an inf file). How do I load it (aka call DllMain)? Do I have to install it first so it shows up in device manager? How do I load it then? No, there is no physical hardware involved, it's all software.
I've been searching for an answer for days, but when to comes to driver development, I'm such a noob that I don't even know what to look for.9
I fucking hate when people that give you marks are not qualified enough.
Actually, in school, it's two weeks where we conceptualize projects (we don't code them, just have concepts) and we're noted on them.
But there's a partial jury, that has partial opinions, the different juries doesn't share the same opinion and are biased.
I don't know, it's like if because they are programming teachers or communication teacher, they were able to know what will work in the future and what won't. Even in domain they don't know.
Impediment to the agile process at my job: systems not understanding what review and retrospective is for. I mean I don't know what it's for, but it probably isn't for yelling about how testing is conducted and why it's hard. I would assume that's for the planning meeting. Not to mention apparently they still don't know the fucking schedule. Since they seem to think I'm done with a task, even though I don't have, like, the data I need to integrate with and it's on the schedule that I won't get the data til, like, the end of the month.
My first day at uni!
This was only the presentation of the course and students, but I am already very excited! I'm even excited to learn math!
The only thing is that there's a lot of people there that have already been coding for some years, some already know C# and PHP and others.
People think that one day, apparently, I would stop being a dick to them. I don't know. I'm what I'm. I have a face like that, I talk like that, but I'm good from heart. I think people lack a sense of humor these days. That's the reason why people dislike me. I don't know why I'm even writing this.5
My manager, while apparently trying to blast us over taking too much time to understand a product (that no one in the team knows about completely):
I don't understand why you guys don't understand the severity of it. How will you support the product if you don't even know it? There's no comments or anything also, just code! You guys should be able to grasp it!
I'm sorry, what now?
(The part about no comments is true, by the way)
Progress on my blog (incocast) goes smoothly, even implemented a basic rss feed. Currently the blog is Service Layer only (because I still have to create a front-end)
It might even be interesting to open some api calls to the public... I don't know yet.. Maybe..
Either way the next thing to implement is a commenting system! :)
So many choices for backend I'm fucking confused. Yesterday, I tried Django and i found it little similar to RoR(in generating things, db migration things).
I'm currently working in NodeJS.
I even don't know should I rant or cry.
And of course frontend is another thing same like this.....
And I'm not much experienced to differentiate them and know which is better and where it will fit.
Can anyone tell me in simple way which framework fits where?1
i don't like devs who put serialized data into a relational database. guys, do you even know how to relational database? 😭😭😭6
I don't know what happened to me. I never had a problem not drinking when I didn't want to even though I drank quite a bit at times when I was still a teenager (Yes it annoys me greatly that I'm not considered a teenager anymore btw).
Not even a month in of being 20 and I feel like I have an alcohol addiction after going drinking a few times. What the hell16
For some reason, I have been feeling horrible lately. In class, even a slightest mistake makes me feel depressed, especially in Mathematics (which I am usually good at). For some reason, my emotions have been amplified by a factor of 100, and I don't know why.
Maybe because my love went back to France, and we won't be able to see each other for a while. I don't know. The only thing that's keeping me hanging is my code, philosophy, and my comrades.1
I don't know why but even though the two are completely different there is some nugget of devRant that reminds me of turntable.fm from back in the day.1
I don't know what you will call this, but I will say it ...
Every time I do substraction, even in normal life, I ask my self If I should add 1 to the result or not, that whether the last item is included or not.
I hate that 😑
And recently, I work with MATLAB, index starts from 1, Awesome Hell ...😠4
Creating my first mobile application in Xamarin Forms. Still figuring out how that framework works, but I'm excited!
Application is for my internship. Helping students study better with metacognitive strategies.
I don't even know what it is, so this is going to be fun.
I tried hackthebox but I'm not good enough even with cracking the invite code. I don't know what to learn and where to begin. Any tips or help would be appreciated :)2
I know many of us perhaps don't get too involved with hardware and especially not with professional network installs, but I wanted to share this YouTube channel.
I've watched a couple of videos and have picked up some tips. Even if you're not interested in networking, this guy's problem solving ability is top quality.1
Just got this email.... "I may have sent you this opening recently, and my client just got back to me this morning and said they are more urgent than ever to have a good candidate with this skillset join their team" I don't even know who this guy is?! Why do recruiters do this1
Got Aa job interview offer from a far location via my site contact page. I don't even know what to do or say. Social Anxiety sucks. I saw their sophisticated site. How do I not feel dwarfed? I don't know how to respond. Please help.1
How hard is it to build an Android app? It's going to have features such as logging in, register, feed, account pages, posting, and private messaging. I'm guessing it'll be tedious but building a simple app is that easy? I don't even know how to make it go to another page from the home page.6
Yeah, I have some friends, but none of them appreciates Yeoman like I do.
Fuck, they don't even know what it is. 😡😡😡1
NOOOO! I am such an idiot! I was done working on an scenario based user story to train employees. So I was done testing and wanted to delete the records in the score table. Instead I AM FCKING DELETING RECORDS IN AN OTHER TABLE!! I AM A FCKING IDIOT! I don't even know how it happened. I can almost cry. So, now I'm taking a shit because that will fix my problem.1
Got a recruitment message on linkedIn from someone outside of Texas (I'm from Dallas). Started with "Howdy" and in his small talk to make him relatable, asked how o thought the Dallas rodeo was, for his upcoming trip.
I don't think I even know anyone who's been to a rodeo.
These guys make me need a nap.
Don't ever give you work mail when you create an account to download a profiler , that decision is chasing me for the last 4 years , stalking saleswoman even came to the office without letting us know and nowadays I get freak mails from them
I just came from a 3rd interview with a company. I don't know how I did really, they asked me to make a .net mvc project in 6 hours, when they know I've never used .net at all.
I had to learn the thing during the assessment, so I think I really did better than what one would expect. But I could've nailed it have I used something I'm more familiar with... I don't even know how to use the ide.
I learned quite some things, but then again it wasn't about learning, but about doing
Just felt like sharing really. Never felt so confused after an interview before. I did really good, but not really... haha
Well they said they will take things into consideration, but idk :/2
I really can't deal with people that work with programming but is ignorant towards it and new technologies. My internship supervisor told me that I shouldn't use Entity Framework, and write all the queries manually because it's their way of doing it. They don't even know what MVC is. They implied that I was doing it all the wrong way, just because they are not interested in learning something new, which isn't even that new.1
I don't know why you expect your website to be done in a month when you can't even fucking decide what it should be.
I CAN'T READ YOUR MIND ASSHOLE.
Don't tell me that I did it wrong or it doesn't look right when you said that you wanted it like that.
I wasn't hired as a web developer, I've done high voltage electrical work, machinist work and repair of the shit you can't even take care of. All for 15usd a hour. If they don't keep their promise to bump the pay....1
Was so worried with all the whining about the windows fall update thinking my pc sucks so it will break for sure. But seems I have had it for a week now and not noticed.1
I know devrant is not the place to ask this but I didn't know what else to do....I very often have doubts about weather I like programming or not even when I started learning programming 2 years ago...Does this imply that I don't really like it? Because I believe that if you really like something than you don't have doubts about it but am not sure if I am correct or not.8
I don't understand why some people take computer science as their stream, while they don't know anything in it. Those majority people in most of the universities take computer science seeing other people's rush. In my University 70 % of the people even dont know the ABC of programming. These mad annoying people just ruin the merit list. 😠😠8
I've just read the article about CloudPet, and honestly I am disgusted.
I don't even know what to say beyond that. I call out my team on basic stuff like forgetting to escape, but this?2
So I'm finishing my last career class, it's called Web Design. I was really enthusiastic about it, because I've been doing that for almost 5 years. Then the professor wanted us to do a work comparing HTML 4 with 5, ok, that's history, I like history. Then he wanted us to do "Your first website", aahaaam, using just plain HTML and sending the content via .zip. Ouch!
Then I asked if I could do a SPA in React. He doesn't even know what is that. He thought it was an IDE.
I don't feel disappointed, I don't feel angry, I just want to hug him and tell him to study Web Design.
How can a professor in 2019 not know about the trending technologies it's been used to do web design?
Now I don't know what to do. I don't want to do a horrible plain HTML website, and I don't even want to do a "complex" thing for him and then have a 0.7
First time building Android...
6 hours syncing repos + 3 hours building and still working.
I don't even know remaining time.
Oh yes, I'm on a Core2 Duo with 4Gb RAM...7
My new task: Improve performance of an archiving algorithm.
"We don't know what the cause of the performance issues is." I can tell you: Because it's overengineered bullshit! This is spaghetti inside spaghetti on top of spaghetti!
And it doesn't help that they don't want to know about different archiving algorithms, because I offered multiple alternatives, one 80% smaller than the other, but the other is 80% faster.
At least I'm instructed to throw it all away and rewrite it and not add even more to the garbage pile. I'm very happy about that.
My arms are dead, between a LAN party weekend and work + fun Python stuff on the side. I don't know it I can even type right now
MQTT - all I used to know about this is its name, untill few months back a client sent us some requirements which included MQTT. I opened its specification and I was fucking shocked! I am implementing almost similar protocol in most of my applications (which needs subscription based service) for last 3 years. I have developed IoT apps, remote monitoring systems, HMI systems using the same fucking protocol! Even I had implemented the same thing on HTTP using long polling a few years back!!
Now I feel like open sourcing my protocol. But I don't know where to start. Any help please?1
I'm building a website with Django just to learn, so far I have login/sign up and even a chat I cloned from github, I don't know what else to do with it, any ideas?4
Why do people try to answer questions they don't even know what mean...
I want to use a package that's made for nodejs and it's using one of the core module of nodejs (http), so that's a problem because react-native doesn't have that module and I can't just simply install it (it won't work), so I search the web in the quest for a solution maybe a drop-in replacement or a polifill or something, I got to this question that's exactly what I would ask if I were to do the question myself https://stackoverflow.com/questions... asking for a polyfill to use http module in react-native, and the only answer is from a guy that I don't think he even knows what he is talking about, his answer don't make any sense with relation to the question and doesn't even address package http nor polyfill so obviously he didn't even know what the title of the question means...
If you don't fucking know something, just stay fucking silent don't reply with giberish stuff that don't have nothing to do with what people are asking. You don't have know it all, don't feel you have to... and don't try to answer stuff you don't even know.4
My boss always tells me to document everything. The problem is that I don't know where, because she tells me something else every time I ask her.
The best part is that now there are like three word documents and two excel files for one project flying around four different storage-systems.
And I am the idiot who can't document if she is unable to find the files she's looking for. Even I don't know where my files went because she moves them around like she pleases!2
I have been having one of those days, well weeks where new concepts that would have otherwise taken a few hours, to learn and implement are taking days !! I don't know how y'all consistently learn new things and implement them, while still meeting deadlines.
My team usually holds weekly progress meetings where we discuss completed tasks and the following week's tasks. During the last meeting, I hadn't completed anything worth noting and I had no major reason other than, not having fully understood the concept.
Which is embarrassing because everyone else had done something.
I know, I know, I shouldn't compare myself to others but we all know my boss does. I don't blame him though, I mean I always pick the cake with more icing, and that's just food!
I don't even know what to do about it anymore!!! Is this a phase? Is it normal? What do people do about it? wait it out?3
I don't like setting up servers and things. I know how to (I spent 1.5 years using archlinux and I know a lot on what's going under the hood). I like the functional paradigm where the same input yields the same result. I don't like having side effects although I know they can be necessary.
I would have to create a script to handle the configuration process instead of spending hours redoing it.
That's what I love about Heroku even if it's pricey. Almost no configuration at all. Attach some addons, configure a few env variables and everything else is in the code.
While I was having a pre-lunch toke and just finished reading an article (about sharing screenshots) and this neat sign up form expanded from the footer.
Now this UX and marketing done right - I couldn't resist and don't even know what the newsletter is about 😂😂😂2
The worst kind of people to work with are the ones that you tell a heads up, don't do this, it will cause problems, but happens anyway and in team meeting "I didn't know, no one told me" and it just makes you look worse to even argue it....
tl;dr: looking for suggestions for new instant messenger (WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.)
so I used to use Facebook Messenger a LOT, actually much more than even texting (I know I know, Facebook=spyware lol). I wanna ditch Facebook so bad but most of the people I talk to, I message through Messenger, and thus, I don't have most people's actual phone number. so I'm looking for suggestions for a new messaging platform, where these are my priorities:
1. Ease of use/existing userbase (e.g. the more of my friends that are already on it, the better)
2. Security & Privacy
3. the ability to easily find people I know without having their phone number9
I don't even know that i should say it was a good problem or a bad one, i was programming a magnetometer sensor in both spi and i2c. I was tired of not working
I touched the sensor it dropped off!!! It was not soldered well!!!! At the problem was not from the code1
By looking at data from an app that analyses my smartphone uses, I came to know that I spend most of my time going through GitHub notifications and Emails in comparison to WhatsApp or social sites. Even when I don't have a notification I open GitHub to check.
I really need to take a break I think!1
Woke up with the plan to read a 2 page pdf and an appointment at 6pm. Was looking forward to relaxing in the sunny weather today. But somehow the universe had to stop me from it. After 4 hours of doing other important stuff that suddenly came up, i still don't know when I will find time to even read those fucking 2 pages.
Oh for fucks sake! Why so we have threading when we synchronize EVERYTHING with a singleton... and when I actually show you that even unthreaded spaghetti code runs 40% faster under real life conditions than your shit you just brush it of because I'm still at university and don't know what I'm talking about... And not because changing it would require money or time we don't have... no, just because I “lack the necessary experience with such things.“
I am a cs student at first class. Obviously we take an algorithm lesson. However, despite we have learned all things related to OOP , we didn't even learn switch case statement not even bubble sort algorithm or anything related to the algorithms. Because of that in my free time I learn this stuff individually. I know we will learn these things in the second class but it doesn't make sense to program anything without knowing them because you need to use them. You can use standard library but that doesn't mean you don't need to know how that works.
I don't know who it was that invented noise cancelling headphones but the person deserves to be a proclaimed as a saviour of humankind...
... or at least this open space. And I don't even have to be jailed, which is a plus.
I remember when I was on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04, there was that weird glitch on TeXstudio where it initiated a system shutdown signal when I just press on the power button, even for less than half a second.
And now, I don't have this problem on Xubuntu. I still don't know what were the circumstances of this glitch, but I don't think I need to bother about it for now lol
Does anyone else ever get really down when you spend too much time away from your project? I feel myself retracting from society and all I ever want to do is drink coffee and teach myself stuff and work on my game.
It's getting to the point where I don't even want to see my gf and I don't even think about food. I see this happening to me in real time, but I don't want to stop it because I know it's what I need to accel. It's just, damn, it all makes me kind of sad and reflective.5
Someday I hope my coworkers realize that since I did not build the third party software they chose as a CRM, I don't know how it was built to operate. Even though the CRM devs have already explained to them multiple times the way it was built to operate. 😡
Anyone else wonder how they got into the kind of the coding they're in?
Like, I wanted to make plugins for music software and DAWs and now I do front end web...
I don't even know what fucking language is used for something like that
Matrix room for devrant community? I don't know if it has already been asked. And I don't even think there is a lot of people who know matrix anyway. But asking won't hurt :p6
Being able to understand and get along with almost any grafical user interface at once without reading manuals, due to knowing the intentions of the UX-designers.
Family and friends are stunned everytime, when they don't know how to do something on programs they don't know, while I often need just a few clicks to archieve it, even if I'm using the program for the first time
Has anyone ever used Robolectric for testing their app?
I am unable to import Robolectric classes even after adding robopectric dependency.
Don't know what I'm missing.
Can someone help me out regarding this issue.2
Guys something serious here.
Should I pick up Data Science or Cyber Security as my area of specialization?
I know it's a really pointless question as you don't have the context or basis of conparison, but think of me as a mediocre programmmer with average skills of learning and implementing things.
1. Please don't tell me to choose what I'm interested in, I don't know what I'm interested in.
2. Please don't tell me to try everything out, I don't have that amount of time as I graduate in 4 months and need to specialize and find a job in the field by that time.
3. Please give your two cents even if you're not an expert, I need everyone's opinion on this...7
Then I spent 2 days trying to make outlook 2010 work again on a user's desktop. Just to find out the "run in compatible mode" was on (even after removing the office completely from the reg manually)...
And I still don't know why the *%×& the compatible mode was preventing outlook from loading the user's profile 😣
Transition from php (symfony) to c# (asp.NET core). So ya the goals to not kill myself in 2018. Oh and I have to transition our jquery heavy, API-less in house CRM app over to angular (I don't even know yet if this is possible).2
how to stop a Android phone from changing IPs
Don't know why, sometimes my Android server changes IPs (without restart), that fucks the exit of services....
Like, don't know why, http always works even when IP changes
but WebDav stops working.... I mean, I can use inside the network but I want to access it from the outside.
Anyone here that randomly received a chrome push notification from some random website (I don't even know the website)?
I know I can block the website but I didn't allow it in the first place.2
I believe I might have some kinda love/hate relationship with documentation, don't know how common this is, though.
I love to write proper documentation for code I write, format things properly, etc.
I hate to read rocumentation (even mine), and that's why I often wrote my own libraries/frameworks in the past.
It kinda helped me with coding, though. :P2
Started developing an interest in programming after creating warcraft 3 maps using the world editor. I still remember those days where I used the gui trigger editor, where I don't even know the difference between local and global variables, preventing memory leaks by using leak check and etc. Creating new skills using triggers was so exciting. Then I discovered JASS, but I didn't really learn or use much about it. Now I'm working in Unity3D and it is awesome!2
I made a self-medication system for pharmacies for over the counter(non prescription) medication with Java with swing and mysql and then I shifted to Java with sqlite and swing.i don't even know if that's a good or even legal thing to keep working on.
Rant about DevRant on DevRant:
I don't know why DevRand is showing me the Login dialog even if I'm already logged in and the session is persistent?3
I am asking here, because even stackoverflow community don't know the answer...
Does Doctrine DBAL support oci variable binding in Oracle or not? I need to know but there are no answer so far...
Hopefully, someone here knows :)1
When I see an error message that I am helpless about - deep inside I feel like I am the father of a child I don't even know the name of !
I got to a point where I have a multi-level recursive promises within loops and my mental map is by far not enough to process this. I wish there were some visualisation tools for this - though I don't even know how it could look like. All I know is that at some point I'm returning a wrong promise and the recursion is not correctly handled.7
My phone is buggy. I just accidentally downvoted a rant. Crap. Sorry whoever's rant that was. I don't even know what I downvoted it for. Any way I can find out what I've downvoted?2
that remote pc from school i did ipconfig /release on... it's been about a week since i did it and i still can't connect!
i don't think many of the other students or staff use or even know about it but i still am sorry...
for the pc :/2
I've been trying to install Android 8 to Virtual Box for the past few weeks. I couldn't figure it out for a time so I left it and recently picked it up again. I started installing it and left it for about 20,000s and it didn't even boot up the OS.
I followed the tutorials online and even implemented the suggested fixes for different problems but it still wouldn't boot up. The only difference is that I installed it to a different folder. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I can't even set the partitions yet because it wouldn't boot the OS.
I'm starting to think it's normal because I can't find my problem online. I know it's not though and I really want to give up but I need an emulator.4
Tried online assessment for position as SD. Gosh I suck on algorithms. I understand scenarios, but don't know how to write even basic sort. Anyway. This was good experience to open my eyes, what to taught myself.
So there's a guy offering job of ANDROID DEVELOPMENT.I don't even know a single thing about android development tell me how can i learn android development in just one day? ;-;4
Working in a city that is slightly hard to reach if you don't live near by....
All the people who come to interviews are fucking weiedos that don't even know basic stuff..
I'll just write everything myself i guess 😡
HELP: yesterday I discovered why my Gradle build takes so fucking long every time, but I still don't know how to fix it. for some reason, it sees the node_modules folder as NEVER "up-to-date", and so every single time I run 'gradle war_exploded' it copies the entire node_modules folder into the war, even of nothing has changed. any ideas?2
Needed a ARC glass, after checkup doctor said I need glass with power.
Got my first glass, due to multiple close encounters with digital screens.
Now I only see blurry, while I could see almost clear before.
Now I don't even know how I look.
And the upside is I can see things in POV now.💰11
I am going to my first hackathon in 2 weeks and am kind of nervous. I don't know anyone and don't have a team. I was wandering if it is a requirement to work on a project? There will be a lot of workshops and I am sure I will learn a lot even without working on a project.
If you could give me some hints on what I can expect that would be really helpful.
