About 10 years ago my wife and I were buying a house. We found out late that we needed a lot more cash than we had previously thought we needed, and the deadline to deliver it was just a few days away. After returning home from my full-time gig at about 6pm, I took a break for a bit and then worked all night on a job for a client to make up the extra money. When 7am rolled around I had just finished up. Then I went back to work at my full-time job, and later met with the client to present my work. It was roughly 27 hours at a keyboard for me. That effort made it possible for us to successfully buy our first home. If you want something badly enough, make it happen!

For 2 years I tried to make my boss pay me what I know I should be worth. Over the same time the team morale took a nosedive down into an avalanche.
Today I told him, that I am sick of being kept waiting and listening to excuses. I want the payment I know I deserve and I want it before the end of the year. I believe to have stayed perfectly calm and factual, even told him "I am sorry, I really tried it, but I cannot take this anymore".
He found a way to put a (literal) "fuck you" and a verbal middle finger into other people's mounts, so he "didn't say it himself" and shut down the meeting telling me to look for another job.

Actually I have not felt as satisfied in my job for a long time, as I have in that very moment.

I think one difficult thing about being a developer is having all your business friends tell you they have this idea that would make millions but you have to build a prototype (for free) for them to pitch. They don't seem to understand that this is a full time job.

I have a 9-5 development job and I also have a personal web application I am building and plan to bring to production.

I'm really close to handing my resignation letter, even if I don't have any other job offers right now.

That might be a good thing tho, as it would be good for me to take some time off and recover from all the toxicity of my current job. Working at this company is starting to take a toll on me, making me more asocial than I usually am. I'm even losing my passion for programming.

I recently interviewed for a job at company where I had 20 minutes to code a solution in python (whose standard library I know nothing about) to a question, which also included googling certain finance-related APIs, with not one but two technical interviewers looking over my shoulder THE ENTIRE TIME.

Once I quit this job, I'm never getting a Mac again. I know many like working on one but for me it just gets in my way, it's naggy, the window manager is clunky, homebrew is a crappy package manager compared to pacman and good do I miss focus follow mouse. So, I'm from a pretty small (and poor) town. Like most small towns, not many give a damn about computer science/IT (that shows by the fact I'm the only CS major. And there's one IT major).

Now, my high school offers a few "career prep" classes. There's (no exaggeration) almost 5 or 6 classes for medical majors to prepare themselves; like 4 different agriculture based classes; 2 business major classes; and surprise surprise...not a damn Computer Science or IT class.

Yes, we have a computer class. But can you even call a "How to Use Microscoft Products" class an computer class? Finally by my senior year, I got pissed off by this.

I had/have relatives that have worked/are working in the school system, so it wasn't hard to get a meeting with the superintendent and the assistant superintendent to discuss my thoughts. They were both open to and even supported my ideas. But due to funding, it wasn't a feasible idea at the time. (Especially since not many care about CS or IT.)

This is where I get really really pissed off. Being that the town is small, the people with money/a name tend to control things. So, a former principal retired with the expectations to work in another county. However, this job fail through. But there was a "magical" opening for a job that didn't exist before this job fail through.

This pisses me off. We can create a job for someone and afford a full time salary for them, but we cant get an actual CS class. (And this isn't the first time a job was created for someone.)

So I wasn't looking for a job, but I wasn't happy in mine, and I would listen to pitches. Recruiter calls me about a Java job. I tell him I know JS and it's probably not a good fit. He insists my resume looks good and that they are happy to train. I know just enough Java to relent. Eventually we set up an phone interview for a day I happen to have off anyway because I'm going out of town. Morning of, I'm waiting around for the call. An hour after the scheduled time, the recruiter calls and tells me they had an "emergency" and wouldn't be able to speak today. One whole hour of my day, making me late to leave town: no one anywhere in the whole company could give me a call, no explanation, no apologies, for a job I had told them I wouldn't be a good fit for anyway.

I left them hanging the rest of the weekend and then take my name out of the running on Monday. Respect people's time and lives!

When me and 2 friends/officemates of mine, formed a freelance team to work part time for us to pay the bond contract on our full time job. We were able to leave 9 months after forming the team.

Just remembered the time I was scheduled for a job interview after my 9 hour work day. They surprised me with a 45 minute MySQL exam. Nothing in the exam was relevant to the job requirements but even if it would have been, my brain was already fried for the day.

My biggest dev regret was that I've followed other people's dream.

One time I got an offer for a job I had found through a recruiter. When I wasn't sure if I was going to take the job, and it became clear to the recruiter that he wasn't going to be able to convince me, he had his "manager" get on the phone to try to tell me why I needed to take the job. One of the reasons was "because I was a recent college graduate and wasn't a CS major (I was a minor but had a lot of experience), this was the best offer I could get." It thought it was pretty sad that they resorted to insulting me to try to get me to take the job so they could get their commission. Sleeaaazzzyyy.

For productivity I get to work at 5:30 and code until 8:30 before I open my emails for the first time. That's when my real job starts as a Project Manager (in the throes of teaching himself to code at age 37)

I used to work at a printing company as their only developer. I was often pulled from doing any development work, and instead would be printing documents, posters and postcards. One time I was printing and developing at the same time for a 12 hr shift. I fucked up over 30 thousand printed pieces of double sided postcards, where the front and back didn't align properly. So it was impossible for the guys to cut them. I left the job about 2 weeks later, and found myself a job that's doing only development, and was working as part of a team of very talented developers. I still have a good relationship going with my past employer though, despite that incident. My supervisors were very nice people.

Boss: look we have only VR projects this year. You need to learn Unity.

My most ridiculous recruiter experience was the time he called me back to say to me that I'm too confident and... too good for the job. I was so confused ! I had no experience at all, and I was a very introvert person. What a strange way to say that I don't fit for the job.

I love job posts made by HR cronies:

"A majority of your time will be enabling development in our React Native app with a large amount of time dedicated to the rest of our stack."

So, if my math is correct... a majority is greater than 50%... but... "a large amount of time" meaning the rest?

Well, more like a dream position than the actual dream job.

Proprietary engine and a new language are kinda hard to wrap my head around, but I've been having so much fun that by the time 4 rolls around I usually don't notice it and stay for an hour or so more.

I love it!

I don't want to work on the project at my job anymore. It's an over engineered piece of shit.

I work on my pet project at home, but only for about 20 minutes at a time. After that, I feel the need to walk away and waste my time with other non-productive activities.

How do I get my love for development back? Has the corporate world killed it?

I have been in a team where every week they had this long and complex task of refactoring everything and changing lots of assets (~2 days of work every 2 weeks) cause the senior tards refused to use a script for it. Told them to use the goddamn backend or a script… the answer? “But that would take at least two days of work! Maybe even three! (As a one time job)” Math you ducking ducks! The second time you use it you are in a time profit!

Is anyone making more money than what they're spending, saving up and having time to spend on a side project/hobby?

I really like programming, but I also want to be able to do other things. It appears that it can be a job that can make one comfortable financially to be able to afford to do other things. Way better than working for McDonald's or some other job.

Is anyone doing this now? Or is everyone working all the time and always stressed??

I just got a fucking job again after 2.5 months between jobs and the new place has been allowing (if not encouraging) the piracy of Windows Server in client environments... I thought this place had so much potential but I was wrong.

Going to start looking for another full time job or really buckledown and try to get my freelance project/business started.

I was in school looking for intern places when a teacher told the class he had an amazing company for about 20 students. Got the intern job by doing my first ever job interview. After a year I got a traineeship while still in school (3 days school, 2 days work).
Now I have a job there, which for now is helping new interns and trainees while sales is searching for projects for me. (I work at a company which "sells" developers for a certain time, Im not sure what the english term for "detachering" is)

My worst and yet kinda best experience. Internship.

I quit my education to go on a path to become a self-taught developer. It doesn't work out that well. I still have a part time job. Which doesn't cover all my expenses. I don't have a degree and nobody wants to hire me. I am getting a second job which leaves me little time for coding. Soooo yeah... Mistakes were made.

Lmao probably the time I worked 150 hours over two weeks (had to sleep on the job) for a project. During delivery I worked 09-22 during the weekend (unpaid) while my boss was out on his boat.

Sometimes I feel like I have to hire a boss for myself. I would tell what shall I work on, and his job would be schedule my time and make deadlines.

Someone wrote to me on linkedin for a php job. I had enough time and accepted the interview. We set it for the next day at a time that both me and the recruiter wanted.
I waited for him to even contact me until 5-6 hrs after the time we set, to tell me he was busy with meetings (wtf you wanted 14pm). I gave another chance and we set the interview the next day at the same time.

I waited for 2-3 hrs. This time he wrote me back even later, it was almost midnight to tell me the same excuse.

Is this a red flag for you? Should I even consider working with this guy?

Couldn't save a file because it showed me that this file is opened somewhere else. So I go to the resource monitor to check for its handlers, but only explorer.exe showed in list. I restart explorer and get back to the code. For the first time..... for the first time in my life I hoped that this won't work. I press Ctrl+S, andddd, file was saved.

So, basically, windows's explorer can lock files. Nice job Microsoft. Nice job.

A fellow student decided to apply to the federal police, after talking with then at a job fair on the campus. The police strongly stated that they had a high demand for new people.
He did not get an answer for the next two months - not even an acknowledgment - so he quickly found another job in the mean time.

After the two months he got an answer stating that the application deadline was over now and it would be great if he'd come for a job interview. Unsurprisingly he declined..

I have an interview with Google in less than 3 hours. It really sucks because I'm totally not motivated to do it. I didn't study much for the interview, because I recently switched companies and had a lengthy job search. And I finally landed at a decent job that I'm having a great time working for. And to be totally honest, I just have interview fatigue. It started in late May and ended in August. Countless interviews asking the same damn questions just gets exhausting. Too "homework assignments" in addition to my "day job". I'm just burned out on interview hence I just haven't had it in me to really study for a Google interview.

I started my first job in programming on Tuesday. I made a VPC using CDK in Typescript. Today, I deployed to production for the first time. Never felt so proud of myself. 😊

things are looking up for me fam. signed an offer letter about a month ago for a GREAT full time job at a company that's in the process of modernizing their web app, so I get to do modern web dev, and I just scored my first consulting job that's gonna pay me a STUPID amount of money and I don't even graduate college till May!

So, after crashing and burning during my last interview I’ve applied for another job, this time as a Technical Support Engineer.

Bringing my aspirations down slightly to spend a bit more time building up my experience.

But, the job is for a good company, and I can work from home.

Last week, I have the courage to leave my job which was only paying me only 180 dollars a month as a Software Engineer for 2 years, and worked on-site so plus travel time and travel expenses, though, that was my first job and I learned a lot.

Tomorrow, I will start my new job that has a WFH setup, and with better pay.

I'm a bit nervous and overthinking what if they will not like me or they will terminate me before paying my debt (debt from preparing my room from WFH setup).

Any tips from WFH people and on how to not screw up on this setup?

So I started working at a large, multi billion dollar healthcare company here in the US, time for round 2,(previously I wasn't a dev or in IT at all). We have the shittiest codebase I have ever laid eyes on, and its all recent! It's like all these contractors only know the basics of programming(i'm talking intro to programming college level). You would think that they would start using test driven development by now, since every deployment they fix 1 thing and break 30 more. Then we have to wait 3 months for a new fix, and repeat the cycle, when the code is being used to process and pay healthcare claims.

Then some of my coworkers seem to have decided to treat me like I'm stupid, just because I can't understand a single fucking word what they're saying. I have hearing loss, and your mumbling and quiet tone on top of your think accent while you stop annunciated your words is quite fucking hard to understand. Now I know english isn't your first language and its difficult, I know, mine is Spanish. But for the love of god learn to speak the fuck up, and also learn to write actual SQL scripts and not be a fucking script kiddie you fucking amateur. The business is telling you your data is wrong because you're trying to find data that exists is complex and your simple select * from table where you='amateur with "10years" experience in SQL' ain't going to fucking cut it. Learn to solve problems and think analytically instead of copy fucking pasta.

How to conduct yourself in a job interview
Simple test"Write a for loop".
First, write some nonsense bullshit for twenty minutes. Then, when you realize time is up, pass to the next question. After write more nonsense bullshit in SQL and jQuery, it's time to breath fast and panic.
Deliver your exam.
Pack your stuff and go to a cave where nobody ever will find you, cry the next three years and commit to a life of self punishment, shame and tears.
That's how you nail a job interview, suckers.

Anyone else feels forced into a position by your project leader to be responsible for another coworker's work?

I feel like it is a burden of an ship anchor. They expect me to explain when she does not do her job correctly or uses too much time on X task.

Every time I appy for an IT job I can't stop to think about the time I accidentally wrote my root password to a discord group chat instead of the terminal window next to it.

The first time I saw "Real Feel" or "Feels Like" on the weather app, I thought that number was calculated by someone going out of their home every hour or so and reporting what it feels like outside. I thought this would be a perfect job for someone who spends a lot of time at home...

Being made redundant from my first dev job this morning.

Might as well make it a positive thing though! I've now got time for a few side projects and open source contributions!

A Bible app for Android called Tour the Bible. It uses the Google maps API to put a pin in each location as you read so you can follow along and virtually "tour" the Bible.

I had a basic version built but then I switched to Kotlin then I pretty much completely rewrote it to use an api for the Bible content instead of plain .txt files. I still try to work on it in my spare time but with a family, full time job, full time school and part time freelancing I don't get much spare time.

Anyone run into the HR app called taleo when applying for jobs? It is so bad. Apparently each company has a different database so you have to re-enter all of your employment info each time you apply for a job at a company that uses taleo. Unless desperate I don't apply for jobs that use taleo.

For the first time, I solved a pretty serious optimisation problem in our codebase without any external input. It's a little thing, but small victories like this are part of what makes the job so much fun for me.

I'm very sad. I had to do 5 challenges in Hackerrank for a job and I managed to complete only 1 in the allotted time.
What makes me sadder is that in one challenge, the testing the compiler did was different than the challenge description (getting me failed tests).

so, i got a job in a company with 140 employees. they wanted me to work 9 hours a day, 30 min rest time and i had to pay for everything like lunch and even coffee. if i get to work late or leave work early they would punish me.

I applied for a job at a genetics company as junior developer (6 months after graduation and no job in that time). I was sadly declined the position so thought why not apply as intermediate developer at the same company and what would you know I got the job.

Interviewed with a company, it was a direct hire SQL Dev/Analyst role(ETL,BI etc). Had three interviews in a row all of which went great. We laughed, I was able to answer every technical question with no problem. Each person clearly enjoyed the interview, I ended up going over the specified amount of time set aside for the interview... Still didn't get the job. They said "There is no doubt he can do the job, but we don't think he's passionate enough about the position." What?!?! So confused. It's also odd to me because every job before this If I had an in person interview I was offered the job... I don't get it.

Today after 6 years I used windows in my cousin's laptop for the first time... I felt really bad for the people still using windows..

Tried to fix a dll problem in her system and still no idea how to fix that shit...

At the airport with the missus going back home, making time in the duty free. One of the people working on it asked a very dry "what are you looking for?" with no salutation whatsoever. I was this👉👈close to answer "a new job!"

Just my opinion, but a software dev job shouldn't be stressful for 9+ months of a year.

I understand sometimes the company wants to launch a product on a deadline, so people have to do extra time at work.

Or an urgent bug fix is needed on the system which requires someone to put in overtime.

But a stressful job for all 12 months of a year is just not worth it, whatever the salary may be.

What do you think?

My worst experience with a designer was when one forgot to design the website mock up for 2 weeks... so I just did it myself. Thankfully I have a degree in both development & design and bullshited my way through it. We were swamped at the time so I wasnt too thrilled to be doing his job. He somehow still has a job here, even though he's lazy and his mockups suck. 🤐😵👎

For the first time in a very long time, I am out of a software engineering job. I have no idea why I am handling this so well. I literally have no idea if I will get another job or not but for this month, I am working on myself and learning more on FP which is really fun btw. Is this maturity?

I'm currently an IT Technician at a facility. I am doing this part time while finishing up my last year of college. I graduate in April of 2017. I just received a job offer to do Web Development part time in the same city. I'm not sure if they will work with my schedule, but they say they will. I will need to learn PHP, because I haven't used it yet, but learning a new language is easy for me. I'm done with most of the difficult classes in my CS program, but I will need some time devoted to study. I'm unsure whether the job is a golden opportunity or if I'm going to screw myself over and be unable to graduate. What do you guys think?

I was away for a long time. Now I got a new job which means it's time to start ranting. Fuck this legacy code is worse. I mean, a fucking cat running after a mouse could write a better source code if he had somehow pushed buttons while doing its job. Every fucking best practice I know is crushed to bits. Received a contact for a new job today, 3 months notice if you want to leave, 1 if they make you redundant. Working hours are 9- 5:30, but evenings, weekends, holidays can be requested with no extra pay or time off. Recruiter recommended I sign it within an hour of receiving it, before I had time to read it, despite them taking over 5 days to get it to me. Suddenly my new job is soured.

Start or participate in my first open source project. All the project's I've made are for sport associations I'm a member of and are purposely closed source. That needs some change.

Was hiring a front-end dev once. Job ad was for basic html/css and graphic design skills. Perfect part-time job for intern or high school kid to get their feet wet. Boss sits in on interview and after I asked all the necessary questions related to position, boss starts asking him programming related questions similar to my position. (php, Mysql, apis, managing vps, custom shopping cart code )

Well, two and a half months later I'm here asking all the professional devs for their opinions on this matter. So, for all you full-time working devs out there: How do you stay motivated to work on side projects during your free time?

Well the first time I coded a proper algorithm in my job was when I created a download queuing system for my company's Android app. It vastly improved download times in comparison to what our the app was previously using.

Ordered to implement Old functionality in New system, not allowed to fix it, refactor or change the underlaying mess.
Wrap old system in a wcf, hardcoded some values, done.
3 weeks estimated so I feel ahead and got more time to look for a New job.

When I found out that the app I have developed basically in my free time to automate most of the monotone tasks that were needed at my first job, was being sold to customers as utility tool for our devices without me getting even a penny extra!

Spring Semester is now over for me. Now it's time for 3 and a half months of a whole lot of nothing. (Productive at least)

Still don't have a job, so I have no money. My applications keep getting ignored. I just really need an entry-level job right now, because I've never been employed.

I had been so stressed about not getting interviews as my final semester's coming to an end. It looked like I was going to be staying unemployed for a while and that I might have to take any job offered wether I liked it or not.

Now slowly but surely interviews are lining up and for the first time it seems like I have options and might land my dream job

After more than one year of searching for a dev job and finally working for some call center for one year cause I couldn't find any job who wanted to take me without any diploma, I finally got one as a php dev I'm happy but at the same time I stress cause I don't want to make any mistake and be fired. I'm starting Monday whish me good luck. I don't know if I'm more excited or more stressed I will know Monday.

I spent way more time coding than learning for school. Because of this I got worse in some subjects, latin for example, but also a lot better in subjects like Math, I.T., Physics and English. I am 15 years old and I have been coding since I was 10 and I hope that I can turn my passion for coding into a job one day.

Sometimes I think to keep development as a hobby for my side projects and not as a full time job.
Hate how development/programming has to compromised for businesses.
