TL;DR Pluralsight should be ashamed for taking 299 USD a year and writing some very low-quality quizzes.
I've always heard that Pluralsight is a great platform having some high quality courses, so I chose it as a benefit, as our company was giving us some budget for learning purposes. I've paid (or rather the company did it in the end) 299 USD for this year, which, I guess is not much for US standards, but it is a lot for Eastern European standards.
I didn't actually get to the point of watching any of the courses, but I started to use a feature called "Stack up", which is a long series of questions in a specific theme, like Java, Kotlin, C++, etc., accessible once a day. I must say, I'm amazed by the fact, that people pay quite a great amount of money and they get something so poorly made with a lot of errors and stupid questions.
Take the question from the included image for example. Not only that the 2 possible answers are repeated (and thus I failed to select the correct one from 2 equal answers), but the supposedly correct answer is also missing some type specifications. No Java compiler will compile it this way as far as I know. There would be at least 3 ways to fix it.
So the courses on Pluralsight might be good, but I would be ashamed, if I were to release something like this. People might actually try to solidify their knowledge by solving these quizzes but instead of learning something useful, they will be left with some bullshit. I just don't get how could they release a feature with so much incorrect information and I am kind of disappointed, even if I didn't try the courses yet.9
!rant, but kinda
My new director wants to buy a solution for a portal environment that my institution currently has. I have no qualms over it. My only issue was the company that sells it to be known to provide close to 0 fucking support when shit arises.
During a presentation we were told that they were using state of the art JAVA technology to render items on the page and that their ApI was easy for devs to grasp. This caught my attention since I know of very few and obscure Java frameworks that work with frontend tech (as in, your frontend logic is legit in Java)
I do not like to be questioned. I shoot the shit here and don't really involve myself with more technical aspects under this platform unless it involves concrete architecture discussions and even there I really don't care with engaging on a forum concerning that. But concerning my job I really.......really do not like to be questioned by people that know way the fuck less than me. I started coding when I was 17, I am 30 now, with a degree and years of experience. I really hate to be questioned by this dude.3
sometimes i miss the days when me nd my friend circle didn't had the burdens of being a wealth generator.
we were mainly hopeless nerds with awkward interactions and introvert natures, but in our own small circles, we would be the boasty dudes. we all won't have much money but would comment on how stupid those rich kids are , buying needlessly expensive stuff when cheaper alternatives exists. some of us would be coming in very awkward, sometimes ugly-ish clothes, but yet would be mocking the daily life rather than each other. hell we even once started a stupid chinese-food heist system and almost got caught
cut to present, i see my friends changing to become exactly those who we loathe, just because now they are earning good on their own. they have started preferring unnecessarily expensive stuff while loathing those who don't buy it , doing unnecessary parties being too much careless in expenses, while becoming excessively obsessed with body beauty. i feel good for them , but why not remember the fact that you are a fatass nerd with truck tires for a belly when you were stuffing those heist dumplings?
i also earn decently yet am proud to wear cheap clothes, buy cheaper alternatives and eat decently prized food stuff amd don't you dare tell me your "quality over quantity" , "premium rocks" , "its a class" bullshitery, asshole.
(although not as proud to be still socially awkward, that waa just stupid)5
Def not dev oriented.
I am a huge fan of trading card games. It started with Yu Gi Oh, moved on to Magic, even tried, LoTR when it was a thing, tried algo Star Wars the original CCG (loved it), Duel Masters (when it was still in the U.S) Pokemon (of fucking course) and other more uncommon ones like Cardfight Vanguard, tried latino only games (Mitos y leyendas, Myths & Legends, this one is king on my list) and Flesh & Blood. But as a mexican kid, I was always a fan of fucking dragon ball, like most mexican kids.
SO I bought some cards from the newest game expansion. the owner of the TCG/anime store told me that if I was willing to play that I should hang out on tuesdays.
So, learning the rules of the game, and wanting to play with other people, I went there on a tuesday.
The MTG people were there fighting amongst themselves for some reason. the Pokemon people were there also, just opening packs without playing. A rather large table was there with a bunch of people playing a game that I did not recognize. And then there was me. I was chilling on my phone thinking that the DB dudes would show up eventually. nothing, so I just sat there waiting.
Suddenly a dude comes to the large table and starts pairing people for a "tournament" and once they are all sited he notices that 1 is missing, he walks up to me holding a store app and asks me "sorry bro, are you here to play with us by any chance?" to which I say "I do not think so, I came here for DB but I don't know what you guys are playing"
The dude looks down on his app, somehow actually sad and says "man I do play DB, but I don't think I have my cards with me, maybe, let me see" and he goes on to see if he brought something.
This was green flag n 1. the dude wanted to just play something with someone. And was doing something to not LEAVE someone behind. then quick as hell another says "well, why don't we give him a deck and he can play with us! we can teach him!" and I say "well what are you lads playing?" and he says "digimon man you like the anime? a new release came about! it's sick man it would be awesome if you play!"
Second green flag, another member of that community was happy for the idea of increasing the membership and actively did something to increase the population.
So, I hanged out with them. Close knit group, all friends from a long time, but willing to take an unfamiliar (and rather handsome) face with them.
My face when (MFW) the DB dudes where not there, so the digimon group adopted me.
I know have over.....2000 cards, most of them were gifted to me by them after they saw my chops and tough me how to play, by graciously lending me their decks.
This my lads, is what humanity is about. We got close fast, it has been 2 weeks of just chilling with them at the game lounge, just nice people, all of them really. Not a single angry moment or anything, you pull a crazy combo on them and they legit sheeeeeeeesh and applaud them, they don't care about loosing, they just want to have a good time, and this, this is a good crowd to be at.
Strive to make people feel welcomed. Being nice to others, taking a chance on people you deem to be ok, is fine really. It is rather cool. Anyone can be a salty asshole, but it takes a real king to be nice to others just for the sake of having a good time.
These dudes, they are gold. And I finally have something to take my mind away from work and other things that increase my anxiety and stress. I would much rather be there shooting the shit with the lads and playing games than at home, drinking the night away to relieve stress.
God I fucking hate macs.
I got a mac at work. I tried to install ubuntu, with rather questionable results (unfortunately, I expected that) - so I tried to get mac work for me the way I like a system to work. I needed to download slack, simple enough, right? Ha, you wish. It's gotta be done through Apple store, so I went to create an Apple ID inside the Apple Store form. And, well, it just errored out on the submission. Great start. I went then to the settings and created an account there, great success, went back to Apple Store. Unfortunately being logged in at the system level doesn't mean you are logged in to the store. So, I went to log in to the store, simple enough, right? No, nothing's simple with Apple. After logging in I got a message that the Apple ID has not yet been used with Apple Store and that I need to review the account's setting. So, I click the "review" button and... I'm presented with a log in form. Yep, a perfect log in loop. I can't log in because I can't review the account but I can't review the account because I can't log in. Fun :)
You can't just go to the web admin panel for your account to review it for Apple Store, that would too be too easy. After a bit of searching I've found an answer on StackOverflow. You need to log in to iTunes. Through a fucking MUSIC APP. To install a free application from the store you need to log in to a music app. Yes, we're all mad here.
Then, after finding out that to be able to use side buttons on my mouse I need an app that I need to manually restart every time I restart the machine and that I need to have an app to fucking transfer files from an android I need another fucking app, because reading a storage of a linux-based system would be too standards compliant - something in me broke. I found out that installing windows on a mac is officially supported.
Supported doesn't mean that it's easy. I tried to install it trying different solutions from SO, but each time I would get an error that Windows couldn't modify the boot partition. Turns out that even wiping the drive and reinstalling OSX doesn't remove residual files on a boot partition and Windows installer is not allowed to modify them. It took me hunting into some shady looking site to actually find this answer. I have no fucking idea how long it all took me, but, finally, great success, Windows, WSL, side buttons working, I can even install slack from an installer. I just wish I could have those hours of my life back.19
I like being an employee in product development team (rather than a consultant in a project) - we're exempt from reporting hours per project and making sure to stay within budget.
But on the downside it's frustrating to se how the org happily spends development time without considering we cost money. Just found out that one department ordered a campaign site that took 4 days for 2 devs to build.
It's now ended and revenue was only a few hundred bucks.
When I asked "Didn't we lose money on this project? Considering our salaries and the ~60hour dev time"
- "Oh no, we don't count the dev team as a cost! You already work here and would get paid no matter what" 😑
Good thing I'm not in finance.4
Question for devs who use Intellij IDEA.
How often do you use livetemplates?
I am a new android dev with ADHD and just discovered live templates. They make my life much easier, for example I have shortcuts for generating recyclerview adapter/viewholder/implementation boilerplate code.
In that way I am able to focus on implementation, and do my coding like building blocks, rather than memorizing every detail of implementation. Also I don't need to go to stackoverflow and copypaste basic things multiple times. Even for example during live coding interview having livetemplates seems awesome, copypasting from stackoverflow would be shameful (I think). Using my own custom shortcuts for livetemplates seems the best way for how my brain functions (I suck at memorizing tiny details, but I remember general idea/flow of a pattern and I would prefer memorizing what to use and when to use, instead of all small details of implementation).
Is getting to dependent on livetemplates a good practice to get used to? Do other developers frown upon a dev who has dozens of livetemplates and relies on them instead of writing all code from memory by hand?8
we are living in a very fucked up society.
- the poor is fantasize the minimum wages nd life supplies( aka more money) . they work and becoms the minimum wage worker.
- the minimum wage worker fantasize a little more comfort, better lifestyle and therefore works to become an average earning worker.
- the average earning worker is mostly happy in present but worries about the future and wants to save, so fantasise an above average income and works hard to become an above average earner.
now here gets everything messed up. the above average worker is supposed to be the ultimate position where you are not really required to upgrade yourself( previous ones were a real necessity for existence). however a person cannot stop here :
1. resources gets depleted , people get greedy, life happens , or just any big firm go crazy and increases the price of their goods. you were filling your stomach whole day for $1? boom, you can't afford a single meal in $1. so the above avg person has to compete with inflation
2. government gets greedy the moment they see you as someone earning more than average. boom, income taxes, tax slabs, "pay for what we gave you when you were poor, bitch"- tax . its an unwanted monthly expense that you can't , much like the offerings old people would do to the village's goon.
3. tempting offers that shuts down the logical part of brain (or rather makes the part have orgasm).
- "dude , you wanna earn 250 bucks? buy 10 burgers worth 50 bucks each for 25bucks each, and you saved 250 bucks!" "but dude, i can have a whole meal for $2?" "but dude , you won't be saving anything" "🧐😐😶" (aka e commerce and other coupons/cashback companies)
- "dude, bet 1000 bucks on this 5 letter image. there is a good chance that other people will also bet their money on it and then your 1000 bucks worth of 5 petter image will be worth 1500 bucls" " but what if they doesn't? do i still get my 1000 bucls back" "nah , you get wjat the market price pf your share price is" (meanwhile someone whispering from the govt :" minus the capital gain tax") (aka shares and investment)
- "hey dude, the 1000 bucks you deposited with me for safekeeping, i am only going to give 2% interest per month from the previous 5% and will also add additional charges, therby giving you a 0$ profit." "WHY? " "because i can" (aka the banks)
so in short, the above avg person can see that in the long run, every service, every deal is going to cost him an approx 20-60% percentage of the income he would ideally be making , so he wants to earn more and more in order to have a good number in his savings for his initial tension of the future.
so from above average to ultra rich, everyone is just running to get a better deal , where oftentimes the other people involved in the deal are getting more than what our above avg guy is earning
plus after a time, these deals are no longer a pain for us, rather we start liking them because that was their goal from the start: to get people addicted to involved in complex cashback/cash delay/cash growth deals.
and this becomes the stereotype rich lifestyle : investing in shares, taking loans, giving taxes/trying to find loopholes in taxes by investing somewhere else, buying unnecessary stuff for the sake of offers and deals .
and in between this stereotype lifestyle (portreyed by everyone from above average to ultra rich), sone factors of boasting and showoff comes from peer pressure/osmosis and then we truly embrace this stereotype by buying extra costly stuff and showing it off.
remember, the original goal of the above average common man was just to fill their stomach both today and tomorrow. his crime? he worried about tomorrow too6
