Devs, if you're developing an app that's targeted to the country Georgia, you better make absolutely sure it doesn't have in-app purchases. For some reason, Google Play Store blocks those apps for Georgia. Even the free apps.7

My wife: Stickers?? Why the hell you got stickers, from who?
Me: From devRant, I told you about that cool community of devs some days ago...
She: NEEEEERRRRRD!
I take it as a compliment 😂6 -
!rant: So I've noticed some devs sharing pictures of their workspace. Let me know what you think of mine!17

*Male devs dying of heat, air quality almost requires a rebreather*

Female dev: "I am cold"
😑🔫
[some cunt decided the gun emoji had to be removed. with all my heart, fuck you and your family]30 -
Last Friday some company invited my project group (I am studying IT) to visit their offices.
After a little speech, they shew us the open spaces (dont feed the developers ;) ). After a few minutes, someone told me :
- "It's a fake, they are not true devs"
-"Why ?"
-" Seriously, who uses light theme to code?"7 -
plot twist
linuxxx is some of the most advanced and efficient AI ever developed, and actually uses devrant to scope out security-aware devs and take them down 1 production server at a time15 -
Why do people (Some devs too...) bloody hell think that devs have Hard time fixing the Semi Colon issue, we have a lot of other issues to figure out, like the Structure of Data, Code Fragmentation, API Creation, Invalid Data Handling, Injection Prevention. But no, since we are developers, we are having sleepless nights because of one fucking semicolon? FUCKING NO, it hardly takes 30 seconds to figure out that there is a missing semi-colon. Really People, stop the ; thing!10
-
Fuck the incompetent and "pretentious psuedo devs" !!
I have been developing a web portal for a student club for this really big company (as intern) and then they assign this fuckin group of these 4 stupid intern devs to work with me !
The fuckin tweked my code and redirected the CONTACT FORM to the fuckin LOGIN CONTROLLER !!
Then these sons of Einstein inserted dummy users without a username and password into the fuckin production site !!
Now each fukin time someone submits contact form is redirected into some random user account !!
Who the fuck needs Hackers when we have these legendary coders -_-11 -
Fucking crunchyroll hardcodes their access tokens in a Constants Class in their APK, technically that is a security issue.
What the actual fuck Crunchyroll!? No fucking wonder you got DNS Hijacked so quick, security is literally your second priority you dumbed down twats, get some real devs and some real QAs for fucking god sakes, you're tearing down your own system by inviting exploits.8 -
I just got told on a video meeting that I am far too pretty to be a developer.
To be fair, I am well aware of this, most devs I have met on the wild are some ugly ass motherfuckers.
I is a pretty ass mfker.53 -
This is to dfox and trogus. I think that a lot of devRanters are very happy with the support option! Although i hate Google pretty much i made a very unlikely exception for you because i would love to support the social network where i, next to being able to rant and be among fellow devs, met quite some very nice devs with whom i still am in touch with through slack and some encrypted channels. Thanks for this awesome place and I'm proud to be a supporter 😃7

*project manager + designer are showing new designs*
PM: so, can we get some estimates?
Devs (literally all of us): do we have a mockup for this interaction?
Designer: no.
Devs: What about that one?
Designer: not yet.
Devs: What happens when you click here? Hover there? How does this look if I select that option + this option at the same time? Does it make sense that a user can select *this* option with *that* option? They're kind of mutually exclusive.
PM: Well...
BTW: code freeze is in two weeks...4 -
We’re recruiting new team members, and so our recruiting staff wanted some input on what to look for. We told them that we need more frontend devs, mainly for JS frameworks like React and Aurelia.
And now a few weeks later we find out that our newly recruited Java developer is starting this monday. Thanks3 -
Some devs like to write meaningless or too general commit messages.
Stop it. Get help.
Call 0800-GITGUDBOIII where real experts talk version control.10 -
"We should use ambiguity-driven development using co-domain model sockets, anfractuous horizontal scaling, and recursive async testing"
"What even is that"
"I found some words I like in the dictionary, and used it as the title for a medium article. I thought that's how we play the game as devs these days"6 -
Today i was so bored, I saw an ant in my kitchen and I placed few sugar cubes infront of her, she had some and went to tell her friends and I quickly hide the sugar cubes because I wanted them to think she is a liar.#Lolz#
Comment the moral of the story.Let's see how creative devs are!!13 -
Everyone has those ideas they thought of and were like, 'that would be rad!' but couldn't execute because of an array of reasons.
Well, two weeks ago I got approached by some people who had *thatmyidea* and were willing to pay me and any devs of my choice, to build it.
We've finished getting requirements and now I'm getting paid to work with devs I love, on a project I love!2 -
When my former boss let me go, he asked "you devs do not plant some secret code into your software so you can destroy it remotely, do you?".
I smiled and walked away.
Needless to say I got some money on top on my last day at that job.2 -
I fucking HATE it when devs refer to "cronjob" as some kind of fucking webservice and not the actual crontab.3
-
Devs are my closest friends and I have learned so much from you all.
They ask some of the best questions, their skill set is ever evolving, they have the real problem solving mindset, they are critical towards any and everything in a good way, and so much more.
There was this thread asking what a bad Product Manager is and this answer takes the cake.
The point highlighted in red is the ultimate truth.
Devs are most innovative people of our times. Big shout-out to you all and thank you for making me who I am today :)16 -
I am starting to suspect that Agile means: "Tell the devs to do whatever you want on any given day, depending on how you feel on that particular day" to some people.6
-
Been seeing a few rants on favorite music, so thought I'd share my spotify playlist called Developer $hell I made a few years ago :) Some of you devs might like it.
https://open.spotify.com/user/...9 -
@dfox you said there'd be sweatshirts...it's cold as fuck here...I need a sweatshirt
*Insert some witty joke about devs never making deadlines*4 -
Just saw an advert with the tag line similar to "An API built by developers, for developers"
Which makes me wonder. Do non-devs build APIs? How does that work?
The same to using APIs. Surely some dev knowledge/experience is required?5 -
Game devs: Let's make characters as photorealistic as possible.
Some asian girls: Let's try to look as unrealistic as possible:11 -
Seriously why hasn't anyone made a coffee brand just for devs called "java" .. So we can show some superiority over the simple folk drinking coffee..
😏☕🍪11 -

Today I navigate the devRant oceans for the 157,680,000 second.
Who knew this place would be still pumping some of the greatest devs I've come to appreciate so many years later, it's not the vibrant place it once was, but it's still full of hidden gems.1 -
Me: "hey CEO, that product that's only had 3 devs on for a couple of years has grossed a million brit bucks 2 years running. Any chance we could get some laptops for the team that aren't heavy as fuck and 4-5 years old. Maybe some monitors that aren't tiny and dull as fuck?"
CEO: "no"
Also, what's people's dream dev gear?9 -
I find it ironic that some python devs hate on nodejs because of npm modules. But then go ahead and create a virtual environment for every new python project.6
-
The management brought some devs from another outsourcing company into our project to overcome the fact that we, the existing developers, are retarded. We are retarded because they change the scope continously (aka daily) and we can’t keep track with their requests. They want something and after we implement it, they want it changed. Completely.
Instead of getting the project and deep dive into it using the materials (setup, architecture etc.) I prepared along the way, their PM said that we have to make some low level knowledge transfer. This knowledge transfer session happened on Friday.
The presenters were me and one of my colleagues. After 2 hours of training, we found out that the supposed senior devs don’t know how to use GIT, they don’t have a clue about Spring nor Angular (nor any SPA framework), their only questions were ‘why didn’t you use X?’ (where X = bootstrap, jQuery etc.) etc.
What is even funnier: during the presentation we were asked to keep a screen sharing opened during working hours for a couple of days just so the new devs could see how we are working.
Guess what happened with the scope on Friday evening: it changed again because ‘you got new devs so there will be multiple resources to handle tasks’.
2 more weeks and i’m out of there...7 -
Hello everyone, it's my first post here, I needed to feel welcomed :D, any devs from France here? I will be happy to make some dev friends, actually I know none except of my colleagues..:s49
-
Just got my beta access for Framer X. They describe themselves as "Unity for design" bridging the gap between Sketch and React using code-based components. I think it has a lot of potential. Would love some non-designer perspectives. What do the front-end devs here think of it?10
-
One of our devs seems to love "attribution" comments in anything he writes.
private void foo() { //Author: John Cribbins
...public static final int FOO_BAR = 21; //Author: John Cribbins
I mean, I get it for an author tag at the top of a file, but certainly not on every field or method. Is this some kind of weird thing newer devs are encouraged to do these days?!9 -
So I’m looking at a senior dev role, and wondering what kind of coding challenges to expect, what have some of you more senior devs had to face in the past?9
-
Hello devs, me and a friend want to do a little experiment. We want to install some kinda tracking software on his android phone to monitor everything he does for a few weeks to see what data/metadata his phone sends to what servers etc. Problem, we can't seem to find an app (free) which does this... Any recommendations?14
-
Hi android devs!
As i mentioned in some of my prev questions, i'm trying to visualize a sound file using graphview.
Now the question is:
I need some kind of indicative to show the current frame while playing the sound.
Thanks aloooot!2 -
Devs: We fixed a bug, so watch out for some changes.
Management: The new values are too bad, you need to change it back.
Devs: But ... it was a bug?
Management: Rollback ... now!
I swear, the moment shareholders are involved, management is just about who has the best lie.1 -

Just started working for a new company. Super cool. Just like the last one (as far as perks), except they actually trust their devs.
Old company: Make sure your code is extensible
Devs at old company: You know it's not written in stone right?
Old company: Does that mean you can make it do this?
Devs at old company: No. That's the wrong code base
New company: I need a feature. Get it done when you can
New company devs: Well, guess I'll take some time to refactor all this stuff while I'm at it
~Some time later~
New company: Thanks, that feature works great!
No staring over shoulders, asking when it will be done. No asking why we want to refactor something. As long as work continues to flow, there are no issues. It's great!
Also, if we want to try a new tech, we just have to put together a short paper explaining why it will work better in that situation than the tech that's already in place. -
Love it when you open up a frontend devs project and among some 50 included npm packages for a really simple project you see this18
-
I want to learn more about this community, it seems like there is a diverse group of devs here, so I wanted to create some polls about for everyone to see below (it would be helpful if you vote!). Here are a few for everyone:

This is a request from all devs out there:
Please, If you plan to use a word play in naming your next product, please make it a little specific.
*googling "Brackets + [issue with some programming language]"
Just imagine how would I find what I want in a pile of crap about matching brackets.5 -
Glad someone is suing them. Why the fuck would apple treat devs like shit. Why do you want 30% of every penny I make? Then why the fuck do I have to pay you $100 every year? And what about not allowing me to choose my own payment system? Some are understandable but you still can't threaten to remove app from store if the dev don't want to do what's profitable for you.
So many examples of victims - Hey, Spotify and there's a ton of independent devs out there who have been exploited so far.
Your platform is attractive to users because of those thousands of devs who build apps despite your greedy policies, so fucking treat them with respect.20 -
Absolutely detest some devs push their advertisement as fucking VIDEO in mobile webpage. There goes my monthly data quota for that silly ads. Fucking unethical.5
-
Some ranters get pissed with junior dev who thinks unit testing is not necessary and a waste of time. While I'm here convincing all senior devs in my office why testing is important. I gave up.3

Hello dear fellow devs, I got some more nice ram and don't need those ram bars anymore. Write why you should receive them and they are on the way. For people outside germany you (unfortunatly) have to cover the shipping costs.17 -
Do these NPC devs even read the README of a project before spewing some dumbass stackoverflow like garbage in an issue thread?
Do your damn job. Being a good software engineer is not like TiKtOk or cHaTgPt where some "magical" answer or entertainment is spoon fed to you, do your absolute best to solve it yourself first, before causing more chaos out in the opensource world.3 -
I’m a devRant virgin and also a new dev so...
Anyone got any general tips for a newbie? For example, what are some bad habits that newbie devs should avoid picking up? Good habits?30 -
I hate it when non-devs (HR, Customer Services,..) treat developers as if they're some type of 'weird non-humans'.
Whatever gives them that pretentious right to just label people like that? There are developers with emotions and humanity too!13 -
These fucking imbecile devs left me a bunch of bugs in a 150k LOC legacy hell...
Too bad it took some 8 months for them to finally surface in prod. God damned...
Technically, this whole codebase is one giant abyss filled to the brim with bugs.6 -
Looking through our gitlog today and see 3 PR's from our "lead developer". 2 of these were removing a single blank line from a class, and the 3rd was adding one back in. None of these had any title or commit messages on the PR's. This is a guy that talks down to everyone and deliberately makes other devs feel insignificant, saying he's too busy to write documentation and it's not needed because his uncommented code is self documenting. But hang on he's not too busy to waste time with pointless non-functional PR's that only remove a couple of blank lines? Scratching my head in disbelief that some devs think they can get away with shit like this. How about you drop the ego and actually try and work in collaboration with the other devs.undefined arrogance self documenting code waste of time lead dev no comments pull request bad design2
-
If you can, attend programming contests, code retreats, and meetups, you'll learn a lot from that, experiences like have a fun talk with mate devs about this awesome environment while drinking some beers or eating some pizza is fantastic1
-
So the team I work on has this giant blue alien doll, the "build break" doll. You break the production build, you get the doll until someone else breaks it. I was wondering if some of the other devs have some fun things they do with their team. ^-^8
-
Unpopular opinion:
I currently work remotely, but as it's my first job I would love to work locally with other devs in a room... Motivating can be quite hard sometimes when you're alone.
(And I know this attitude will probably change once I worked locally some time)3 -
What if devRant was created by the NSA to make paranoid devs feel more comfortable and share some private information they wouldn't share on other social media?
🤔11 -
Every Website seem to has some glitches... and you can't ignore them like non-web-devs do... i wish i could look up the menu on a local restaurant-website without going crazy about the buggy slider or the misaligned address-div
-
Today I showed and told some of devRant's rants to one of my housemates (I have 2 and they're both non devs) and he said "People can't be that stupid". Oh boy are you wrong
-
I always thought callback functions are some mysterious things that high end devs understand. After learning it I feel to stupid now. 😭3
-
Recently found a weirdest job in IT company.
The job description said you just don't need to know anything, but sometimes say some phrases like: "Who made this code, and I hate when it isn't made with framework" sitting in front of a laptop.
Someone is looking for fake programmer. I was astonished.
They said they have about four devs sitting in office and nobody believed then it is no problem, so they posted this to find couple of fake devs. Glasses and ugly sweaters is a must...7 -
Why do some Devs feel the need to over complicate code to make themselves seem smarter?
No, we don't need a wrapper for a <p> tag that builds a normal <p> tag with a message your provide.
Use a normal tag! /facepalm4 -
Product gets launched in 2 hours. Just casually updating the documentation. Nice chill day. Everything tested and validated.
Then some random f**king designer comes barging in vomiting all these "necessary" features to the product owner.
This was yesterday. The designer and product owner are currently complaining to us devs that there are bugs everywhere...
I need a beer.3 -
Fuck jQuery. The only reason I see anyone using it legitemately is because of backwards compatibility. Almost every jq method is either native js or native css. The problem is, some devs become practically dependent on a library. By then, they are no longer js devs. They are jQuery devs. When you find yourself going to the docs of a lib before native methods 9 times out of 10 you've gone past the turning point. When you find yourself including jQuery instinctively, you're gone. StackOverflow is a great example of this:
Question - 1 up
Pure JS answer - 0 ups
jQuery answer (same length) - 2 ups and accepted
Come on man. It's 2018! We shouldn't be writing jQuery anymore. Native methods ftw!15 -

Hello fellow devs. I will be having my internship in November this year. I main java language and thinking about diving into web development with Java EE.
Can you give me some tips on how to start? It feels too vast that i dont know where to start. Thanks :/10 -
In our company, all devs are using windows notebooks with the brand Schenker.
And they get bluescreens regularly. The bluescreens are currupting git repos and other data. Seems to be caused by some driver issues with trackpad but no fix for that yet. Happening for years now...
If someone hits the table and gets angry, he probably got a bluescreen again...3 -
I absolutely love the dev community but one thing I just can't stand is the snobbery that permeates it. I don't understand why some devs expect non devs to know or understand the intricacies of computer programming or even computers in general when it's really not their job to do so.
"Ahhhhh!! How DARE this non dev PEASANT ask me about hacking Facebook accounts!! Does he NOT understand the basics of DNS spoofing and social engineering!!1!!1! bahh"2 -
Got fired today due to one big cunt who just joined to sabotage all junior devs because his older than all of us, im dissapointed at how arrogant some of you old devs are, the good old days development houses used to be fun and young, i respect all of you with great heart but we are not trying to compete with you if we know knew tech better than you, times have changed, if you are still dumb about bootstrap dont hate on anyone but yourself. Grow deFaQuPndStopHating3
-
At the beginning of programming the languages were complex and you had to think like a machine to do what you had in mind. Now code is art, it's like a poem. That's why some people (including me) when drink a beer or a cup of wine do better code.
Cheers, devs!2 -
Went to firefox test pilot and they really got some cool ideas there (e.g. snoozetabs: https://testpilot.firefox.com/exper...) only if firefox devs invested 1% of fucking around with "cool ideas" to maybe getting the dev and responsive tools up-to-date..1
-
So I wanted to get back to some hobby projects and C# so built my own DevRant GUI.
I am curious though what other devs think.
TBH, I've never had anyone give me a code review and not sure how of a developer I am...

So it's a damn sunny Friday afternoon, perfect for a motherfucking picnic or whatever..
And I'm at the fucking office trying to solve a facebook share api related bug while some motherfuckers are having a roof party less than a block away!!
Fuck this shit, fuck you mark and fuck your devs.2 -
What is it with devs (not all, by any means!) who don't understand networks or basic computer operation? I'm not talking about anything complex, but things like the dev who asked if his IP address could be whitelisted so he could remote in from home. We asked what his public IP address is and he said 10.0.0.27.
Or the new dev who started and said her laptop camera didn't work and logged a ticket, only to be asked if she had the camera cover open or closed and said, "oh, that's what that lever is for."
Don't get me wrong - many devs and sysadmins and IT people of all fields are excellent. And there are some who are crap in every field. This is no rant about devs in general, just *these* crap devs that I can only throw my hands in the air and think, well, they scored ok in the SQL test.4 -
*some* devs with their multiple monitors are like my 3 flatmates with their multiple shower products.6
-
Solo Android app developer here. It's 4AM where I'm working. Been working alone on a project for the last 20 days. Looking to get some inspiration and discuss new ideas with other devs.
So hi!
What's up with you? What do you do?20 -
What benefits do Linux OSs give that many developers use it? Don't get me wrong, I like the distros out there. I've used some of them. Other than the server related stuff, what benefits does it have for devs?
I can think of the terminal as one.18 -
Even though I have 500 reputation on StackOverflow I'm afraid to ask a question! Coz other devs can be really down right mean! No one knows everything, we are all here to learn. Some ppl don't understand that they too started like this.2
-
Devs: There is to much work for the team size, can we say no or wait to the business?
Mgmt: Here are some staff aug contractors.
Later
Devs: They are screwing things up.
Mgmt: Then manage them better, it’s your work they are doing.2 -
What's the deal with some devs, that genuinely know their stuff and can answer almost everything off the top of their head, yet they seem unable to apply their knowledge when it comes to actually using it.
Kinda like being ace at theory but shite in practice.1 -
Some motherfucker pulled the entire fucking Lodash library off a CDN so he could use one fucking function.
Buddy, the library is open source, you can just copy the relevant code off Github
This is why websites are slow as fuck, devs import shit they don't need3 -
CEO announced a bug bounty programme for devs to do stuff in their free time for additional cash.
Cash is decided by business people based on their idea of how complex the given problem is.
And it's not for bugs one could just find and fix. Only some fixes/features decided by them.
Like second shift.4 -
@Android Question
Does all android devs use Async Task for their Json calls or you prefer to do them on Main Thread ?
Am just asking to improve my skills and get some senior programmers opinion14 -
What's the deal with Python? All the young devs coming out of school are so centered on it, but honestly I can't think of a project that I've had where it was even considered being used. Am I missing out on some hotness here? I know some schools are moving away from Java centered education to Python to help ease people into programming. To me that seems strange since you're learning so much less about the stack. </ rant>16
-
Robocup Leipzig 2016. World competition.
After years of (mainly unsuccessfully) developing our robots we finally managed to place 3rd. Out of all the countries in the world only the Germans and Austrians managed to beat us, and honestly I'm perfectly fine with that. You guys have some really good devs :)5 -
Is it wrong to expect some widespread documentation from a $350 billion company to properly document a key part of their upgrade path for a new SDK version? beware any Android devs upgrading from API 3.X to 4.X on the Facebook SDK.......you'll want FacebookSdk.setLegacyTokenUpgradeSupported(true); before your call to initialize.....
-
A 'senior' dev just questioned us (by question, I mean scold) when I suggest writing some additional information regarding db patching scheme of our project on our Wiki, just thought it might be useful for other possibly new devs later.
Apparently that would be 'spoon- feeding' them and it is totally NOT GOOD.
Smh.2 -
are there some graphic designers here? 😎
Do you code?
Did you learn some stuff here on devRant? What did you learn?
What do you design mostly?
How do you deal with programmers who don't obey your design specs because they're lazzy fucks? muhaha 😆
how do you think this profession will evolve in the next 10 years?
and you devs, what do you think of us? what are your experiences with designers? good and bad ones?8 -
Backend devs (and yes, even full-stack folks) who naively dismiss the nuance of a frontend dev role have clearly never tried to do a really good job at it. Or, don't realize the fullness of the responsibilities, more like.
Frontend devs have to reconcile all the requirements (and sometimes whims) of the following people:
- End Users, obviously
- Desires of Business stakeholders
- Visual Designers
- UX (Yes, it's a different discipline from vis design)
- Fellow frontend devs
- Performance budgets
- Accessibility specialists
- Content Authors (if using a CMS)
And rarely are they ever ALL aligned. Some days, it feels less like development and more like brokering deals and compromises.5 -
PM: OK team. There seems to have been some confusion over card AAA-111. So from now on we need to be specific in the cards and make sure we have AC and a description of the issue
Devs: Thanks, we appreciate that
PM: makes card
Card: Why is it slow (yes, that's the actual card title)
Card: ... nothing else, completely blank
Devs: Wtf?
PM: these are supposed to be conversation starters guys!
Devs: JUST TELL US THE PROBLEM! WE'LL ASK WHEN WE NEED TO8 -
One of the devs at my internship company decided to have a client's website load all of it's pages from the website's Database.
That's right, a PAGE as a database row!
And I don't mean having it get some of the info from the columns and putting it into the page's html with php or some shit. No, I mean an actual html file copy pasted and added into the database.
This company scares me sometimes.1 -
I was doing code reviews for some of the new Devs recently joined... One guy wrote his entire life history in the check in description... Like Why he took this approach, why interfaces are necessary in coding, when did he lost his virginity (I doubt he ever did), what's his pet name? - sadly no information related to his online banking... Shame really...
-
I so much fucking hate most people
You devs are all good and cool people
Almost everyone else can eat a fucking dick
Some people are fucking disgusting
Everything is so blissful and the whole day is so bright and then you hit into a fucktard that ruins your day
Fuck you bitch you stupid fucking whore5 -
Hi guys, I'm back!
I spent some time not using DevRant, I got a new phone and thought it would be better not to install it for some days. I had to do a lot of stuff for school these days and didn't want to geht distracted by amazing devs posting cool rants. So here I am, happy to see you all again. (Or at least your avatars)12 -
I'm curious .... Devs seem to love quotes that try to give you some profound wisdom
Personally I don't care for them kind of like reading cards but id like to know if you guys have any 🤔
Mainly what you think of when you need to get things done what keeps you driven7 -
Why do some devs who work for corpos have a superiority complex?
“Oh I cannot imagine working on a small team of 3 people (2 devs, 1 designer) on a website”, saying it like if he was disgusted. “The team I work in has 40 people”, with a hint of superiority in his voice.
Bro, chill for a moment, it ain’t a race to the top.10 -
Talking about some plans today with back end devs... One person tells me the front end devs couldn't make it... I said: I wouldn't call them "devs"... Person says: Yeah, let's not mention that in front if them...1
-
Mention some supernatural powers that only Devs can master upon!
.
.
Can't think of any??
let me tell you mine's,
I can easily determine the interests and how creative my colleagues are just by looking at their desktops... 😎☺😂 Isn't it cool?3 -
Dear Game-Devs,
if your game takes some time to load that's fine but please do NOT let me press a button after starting the game and THEN start loading the menu for some time and instead load the menu immediately! What's the point of that? If I know it takes some time I want to start it and maybe get a coffee and when I come back everything is loaded...6 -
Companies try to find young devs, less experienced but more openminded and flexible.. do you think we will still find some cool sobs when we're > 40 || > 50 years old, even if we keep up with new technologies and stuff?
Never thought about it until now..3 -
How the hell some devs are releasing to production before passing to QA, Alpha testing, staging at least handle all type of errors and hide your API Keys.5
-
I don't understand some job ads. The companies want developers with 3+ years of experience in everything for entry level positions.
Aren't there any entry level positions for entry level developers with less experience?
If this is the norm, how do junior devs get the experience they need to be qualified for these "entry level" positions?8 -
What are some strategies to grow when your team size is increasing? My team will be doubling in 6 months. All devs.8
-
Dear devs: Is 8:06am here and I didn't sleep cause I was updating some firmwares.
I think I'm blind.
Good night! I mean, good morning! -
Hate when one of the devs get personally offended cause I log some bugs about his part of the app.. I know it is your child, nothing about you, it's a bit retarded, and doesn't do well with other kids.. :/
-
Had a feedback meeting with one of my senior devs today, it went really well and allowed me to get a new view on some things, like some common behavior patterns I do. Really happy about it :3 If you didn't have something like this yet, go for it, it's definitely worth the time ^^
-
We have so much pl/sql at our company and it really sucks because the "young" generation of devs must convince the pl/sql guys to switch to some more powerful and newer languages like java.
But not everyone wants to use the new stuff or learn anything new. I mean there are some programmers who really appreciate that there is new stuff. They have no problem learning from the younger generation. But some of them just resist any change in that direction, and thats the much higher amount of devs.
Does anyone of you have such experience? What can i do against that?
Is that some kind of "i am too old for this"-trip?13 -
A quote I came up with, during some beers when complaining about how we've required our Devs to be always available on-call because we've shied away from investing in the reliability of our systems.1
-
I quietly refactored an entire NodeJS express in-house framework that was written in Java style (dependency injection, inheritance, inversion of control) and split it into typed, composable, parameterized, testable middlewares in 2 weeks (including some complicated ones like a custom Openid Connect flow)
Now comes the hard part: convincing the Java-devs who wrote it that it is useful3 -
Just relocated to work in stockholm to work as android dev. Any devs out here who would like to meet up have some coffee or a beer and teach me the swedish ways? :D1
-
dear perl devs,
WTF is wrong with you.
some of your version numbers look like someone uses floats for money without knowing the dangers of it.
Some Examples:
2.000006
2.0030044 -
Google suggested me some article about how to preorder iPhone 8 and 8 plus.
To all devs who want to know my trick:
just buy second hand iPhone 7 or 7 plus and say it’s iPhone 8.
This is written by an iPhone 7 plus user and I suggest you if you want good look and functionality - buy OnePlus 5.2 -
Hello, brilliant minds!
I am participating in a hackathon based on web development and I need to submit potential problem statements for the same. They have some predetermined domains, but I am unable to look for a suitable problem. The domains are:
1. eCommerce
2. eGovernance: Smart City
3. Fitness
4. Social Innovation
5. Tool/Library/Extension for devs
6. Travel
7. Women's safety
I will have 6 hours to code. Please suggest some of your best ideas. Thanks in advance!
Love,

Saw lots of regret posts about being in dev field. Then why bother living that way?
Not like engineering, medicine or business management fields, I believe programming needs passion similar to art related careers like acting, music and painting etc. So if you don't have any passion for programming, you won't be successful or satisfy at all.
That doesn't mean it is all good and happy days for every passionate programmers. We sure have ****ed up days (probably more than other fields.) Seriously that's why we have devrants. No? But it doesn't reach to the point of regret to me.
Here our national programming language is probably PHP. The pays are lower than your part-time fast food chain workers. The internet speed is in kbs with 2 digits most of the places. Government doesn't give a crap about IT. No IP copyright laws and so on. I probably would earn more and live better if I were not running this IT business.
But hell yeah I never regret at all.1 -
Got some new coffee, Trung Nguyên from Vietnam. Now that's some in-your-face coffee! Strong and interesting taste, slight cocoa aftertaste. Only recommended for hardcore devs.6
-
Hated function naming in python, because some functions are like "dothisorthat", some are "do_this_or_that", some are "doThisOrThat", some are, I don't know, what new technique of naming would python devs invent in the near future. Honestly, these naming creeps me out4
-
Just curious why I see so many devs drooling over Lenovo devices... I personally think they are some of the worst designed hardware around but seems like I'm in the miniscule minority here...7
-
I think the worst thing I’ve seen from devs is lacking the curiosity to know how some software library works before using it which then almost always leads to bad design and code.
-
Customer CCs me and some other devs:
"Why isn't there a support ticket on this? I didn't get an email about a support ticket opening!!!!!!!!"
-check's email-
To: donotreply@......
¯\_(⊙_ʖ⊙)_/¯ -
Finally joined the supporter program. This app has been an amazing way to vent frustrations, get some dev related humor, and see what other devs are up to so I couldn't be happier to pledge my $2 a month. Thanks for an amazing app @dfox and @trogus!1
-
Linkedin looks like some devs went to Facebook, right clicked, saved a copy of the webpage and just edited some of the text. Why do we need "Like" and "Comment" features?
It was fine when it was just a professional networking site. Boring, sure, but at least it did the thing it was created to do.
It's all very cringe now.
PS I got my current job and will probably get my next job through Linkedin, but it still makes me cringe4 -
Just curious where are you devs from.
Is there any devs on here from NZ besides me and some friends.59 -
Hey devs, I wanna start working on open source projects related to java and Android but I have no idea where to start.
I have been developing apps for some time but my profile isnt good enuf so thought i can get some more experience by working Open Source.3 -
!Rant
Hey guys i just wanted to share my newest project with you. Its a highly customizable snippet manager currently only available for windows (sorry linux guys but the linux version is on the way). Im working on this application now almost 2 years. You can download it here: https://snipaway.futureglobe.de/
I hope you like it and would love to get some feedback from other devs (because devs are my main target audience).
Thanks to anyone checking it out :)2 -
I want to launch my own think tank and employ some the great devs I've worked with over the years.
No clients or stakeholders. Just us, building and releasing stuff. -
Every time I read some script kiddy insult here I just think: "you propably did the same thing 10 years ago, not JS but PHP, but it was the same level of shitfuckery and the C/C++ Devs looked the same way at you you look at NodeJS developers now."2
-
python devs are not devs
why do you need numpy and 30 other packages to change some lights on a keyboard
and then the kicker is that it doesn't even work, because it can't find a daemon I guess
this is so fragile
so ridiculous
every time, these math people14 -
Every. Single. Time. I've tried to learn and implement proper Unit/Instrumentation testing, the main Android devs decide to go for something else or introduce some feature or Gradle plugin that breaks every tutorial out there. I find it way easier to just test everything manually than learning the new yearly trend. Am I the only one?1
-
Some Devs need to be better about sharing info. Like, I don't want to play 20Qs just to learn how to configure a system I never used. You have job security, don't worry! Other people are allowed to know what ya know; you don't need to impress anyone!1
-
Creating an secure authentication system is not that easy...
Especially if you create it for a community full of devs.
But I think I've found a secure solution.
Maybe some security experts on here could review the code after I'm finished.
Here's the GitHub repo but the auth system is not up yet:
https://github.com/DevRant-Docs/... -
I can create and deploy a web app (LAMP stack) but I don't know how to create mobile apps. Should I hire mobile devs in the future or self study and create the mobile apps? Um or find some mobile developer to partner with? 🤨4
-
Got a bad question here. I've got my homepage (login + some archives with access permission) which I made in HTML + php (yeah I know). But I just hate how php looks. So I'd like to rewrite that whole little bastard now using some other language (not php obviously). What do you recommend? Which Lang's/frameworks are being used. I heard python and java spring were good but I wanted to hear the opinion of some real devs I guess. I'm rather a back end dude (c++) but I think it would be useful to learn some web programming too (not interested in fancy animations and shit, just a good ol' single colored site that displays the content)2
-
Devs: How should we design the UI?
Design & Marketing: We were thinking something like the Ferrari website (or app that has nothing to do with our industry)
Devs: How about we add <feature that all of our competitors have>? We're falling quite behind on that and its hindering us from connecting with their REST API.
Marketing: Nah that's too complicated, and our customers haven't requested it. How about we add some animal animations over there instead?1 -
What's your opinion about Dreamweaver? I haven't seen any web devs talking about it in all of the space of programming community. Is this because it's a software more focused on design itself or have some special motive either?4
-
So you have saved up some money, got a macbook, paid for an apple developer account to build an app which uses the camera only to find out that the simulator doesnt work with the macbook's camera. Apple do you realise that without devs you wouldn't have a decent app store?8
-
We interviewed some candidates for a dev position some weeks ago and, knowing the environment isn't that challenging (at least for me) I voted against the better curriculums because I know they would be frustrated fast, I said that. But I didn't say it was because it's shit here... Of course.... I really just want the good devs to be better then they can be here.... What do you think?3
-
One of the senior devs just showed me their documentation AND IT'S A FUCKING ONENOTE FILE WHERE EVERYBODY JUST WROTE WHATEVER THEY THOUGHT SHOULD BE WRITTEN DOWN IN RANDOM PLACES
Atleast it's some sort of documentation I guess.2 -
1.) Read the docs on the website
2.) Curse the Devs for bad docs
3.) Go to YouTube and pray that I find a food tutorial WITH AUDIO!
(jk,sometimes some docs r very neat and clean) -
Hey devs, Are there any cool tricks I can do with my pebble watch?
Custom software's , or some other tricks4 -
Can anyone explain to me how is it possible that some devs like to work on macos?
This feels like a punishment to me. Every time.26 -
I would need some help by web devs with my website. This is what i’ve done so far. Take note, i’m not a web developer.
What can i improve?

As software devs we likely know about xkcd comics.
Some are just funny, but some have deep meaning or idea buried inside.
What xkcd comic influenced you the most?
For me it has to be https://xkcd.com/150/
It feels like a spin on the idea to "create your own path", but for some reason I took it very deeply to my heart.5 -
C# devs go crazy once they found out that kotlin has got extension methods
and some other c#-like features
Just use Scala.
There's a reason books with titles like 'Scala for Java/C# refugees' exist3 -
Any devs running some open source projects & looking for helpers?
Sincerely, compsci student looking to learn and code8 -
I have some ex colleagues and friends now devs in Facebook, Amazon, or other major companies. No life, monothematic arguments, no hobbies, no time. I surely prefer my simpler life.
-
Devs: We've spent some time estimating the stories, and found that we will finish a month too late. Which stories should be removed?
PM: None
Devs: Which are less important?
PM: All are vital. (read: Work harder)1 -
my biggest lol moment was talking to some hardcore always bring in your own algos and ds games to the table, always going to the core of the world devs, better than thou my shit is better than you ass, my point of view is the best in the world devs, cite papers and algos to you devs, shit like that that were making way less money than some dudester ruby on rails dev sitting at the the conf sipping on his drink.
Really, all that comp sci shit is legit and fun as fuck. But if you are not getting the green for it and living the life then what is the fucking point. Even then, those that are are normally fucking morons. This shit ain't some art, or a personality trait, it is a job.
Fuck me i am so tired of the whole hacker news reddit ass SO mentality of devs, then again I am also tired of mfkers with no knowledge of actual engineering publishing medium articles left and right.
As long as you cannot take human error out of this computer equation you will always have a shitfest of opinions, because regardless of correctness you will always have a shitfest as long as some dickwad has a difference of opinion in an otherwise young ass scientific field such as computer science.
Language wars, framework wars, editor wars you name it. This field is so fucking broken and so full of shit it ain't funny, made less comedic by the fact that it runs the world.
If we are going to die it will be by some massive kernel panic made possible because somewhere, some morons could not mergr a repo due to conflict in ideas. As if being right was going to bring you closer to not being an ugly fat nerd and getting pussy, or dick, whatever your flavor is you fucking losers. -

build me a little tool today, which make use of the spotify API.
Just want to thank the devs of this API. Well documented, good examples, easy to use.
There are some good devs Out there 😊3 -
We were building a website using angular 1. We were collaborating with some devs from outside our firm. At some point one of the devs(which was supposed to be a front end expert) had the brilliant idea to migrate to a never version of angular. He made the changes and fucked up all the controllers and functionalities and then he just disappeared. My team worked for 2 weeks to fix his mess.
Dude do you even know the definition of refactoring? 😤4 -
Legitimately thinking about having everyone in my department take the ejpt certification test followed by the Offensive Security examination, just because I think those are some legitimate skills to have for devs.5
-
Saw a git repo that contains the node_modules folder and some dependencies and was wondering how'd fuck did this guy get this up here.... Mehn some devs can be super powerful(funny)
-
Bug is not fixable
I get these as I have to submit security issues as bugs and then help whoever is in charge of the fixing find and implement a good solution. But apparently , nope . In some devs opinion , sqli issues are not fixable .1 -
Why can't we comment with an image attached? I wanna troll some devs with some plain old pics. lol jk. 😂😂😂
-
I am thinking about learning Ruby. Some awesome things like Oh-my-Zsh and Homebrew are built using Ruby. Read many posts about it. Some say Ruby is overrated and cannot be scaled.
What do you devs think?7 -
Yo, have some questions for all you Macbook devs here.
#0. What language do you mostly write in?
#1. Do any of you dualboot / use VM's on your Mac?
#2. Is it better or worse (in your experience) to code on a Macbook in general?
Asking bc Im thinking on getting one for The thin and lightness of it.15 -
No wonder it’s hard to hire devs with even a basic level of competency or some kind of promise that them might be able to learn shit given time, opportunity and guidance. The sheer amount of idiocy and stupidity and straight up incompetent cringe I witness on every platform giving us devs a voice (yes, including here) is mindboggling…5
-
Some people are plain worse than a windows update.
Please overcommunicate! And ask questions. Assumptions are leading to nothing but overwork in a project where there are 8 devs contributing on a single codebase.2 -
On the off-chance there's a Spotify Dev lurking around here... GOD DAMNIT!! For some reason listening to Spotify(PC) through earphones and then unplugging them to listen through the machine's speakers turns Spotify into a vegetable (not even a nice one). Speakers to headphones works fine though.
I needz muziks to devs good
*sad face*2 -
Whatever the f is wrong with numpy devs!!!!
Like seriously bro....
I can't import the effing sklearn.decomposition to do some basic PCA and the best solution out there is to downgrade it to version 1.16.1. Like hell!!!!
Issue has been known since last year, but guess who cares effukers8 -
Just want to know how many other game developers there are on here...
Got an idea I want to get other Devs opinions on but would love to here some tips and opinions from other game devs!20 -
Frontend JS devs - did you take the plunge into Typescript?
I've done some reading and a simple intro course but I'm still on the fence, what pushed you over the edge to adopt it?4 -
When the fuck will some people here start using categories how they should be used? They post something in "rant" category, but it starts with "!rant". Seriously, what the fuck? How can people this retarded even be devs?10
-
Have grown wierdly fond of devRant in a very short time.
Reading about devs around the world getting as frustrated and magnetically fucked as me, gives me some sort of sadistic calmness.1 -
A certain app I use occasionally has some premium features that I have been too cheap to buy. Just found the full source code on GitHub. An hour later I have all the premium features for free. Stealing? Nah, my conscious is clear.
To all indie devs out there: if you have paid features, don't make the app open source.11 -
Few things hack me off more than devs who can't be bothered to do a task properly, so just submit some random crap as a PR that looks half correct at some surface level in the vague hope it gets approved.
This team is about creating decent, tested, reliable, resilient backend infrastructure, and we need to trust devs in order to do that. If you want to pull the half-arsed, do as little as possible and get paid as much as possible approach then sod off to higher management somewhere.1 -
Today I asked a question on RPG stackexchange, I made some typos, didnt format it nicely, added a wrong tag.
Within a minute I had 10 upvotes and an answer, people formatted my question and people improving the answer.
I was so surprised that people actually where nice. StackOverflow is one of the few stackexchanges that really sucks...
Why are devs such jerks?2 -
Been thinking about this a lot and I'd love your thoughts. Recently a friend was starting in dev. They asked me for some advice. I just said "be humble and hungry". I've built my career on that phrase. Be willing to listen and willing to put in the work.
What is your best advice for the young devs out there?4 -
The Web 3 has coming and I really love that. The descentralized web is a new way for the devs. Some projects was started, like: Patchwork built on SSB protocol (Secure Scuttlebutt), Dat Project wich create the dat protocol for share files in P2P network. Someone has started same project into the new web?
P.S.: All projects before has built in Node.js/JavaScript1 -
I don't have an ios device (and hope I'll never have to :p) but I hear people saying that apps never crash on it.
Is this true? And if so, how is this achieved:
Forcing devs to pay extra attention to this or some system mechanics/structure or...?
Although i think i already saw things crashing somewhere...4 -
Told some Devs today, "I've given you information on how to start testing. Java is easy to test. I've explained why it's important. Now, if the next change you make isn't tested, that's a choice. If you make that choice, please consider other places of employment."
So tired of lazy.10 -

I'm a designer and just found out about a hackathon by Deutsche Bank hosted at the end of October in Berlin. Are some devs out there interested in forming a team (and brainstorming about an idea, obviously)? Preferably from around Germany, since one has to pay travel costs on his/her own, but I'm open, really.
More information: https://api-open.db.com
Just hit me up if you're interested!
P.S. I'm not bad at getting some front-end development done...8 -
Question for web devs. I have to manage a simple php website and I am tired of filezilla+notepad++ combo. I need something more modern. Tried visual studio code+simple ftp integration but it doesn't seem to download some of the folders. Can you advice any other alternative?13

Started 3 weeks ago, some devs left already, more devs are leaving, the place seems nice tho //confused8

Freelance web devs: where can I find some examples of industry standard pricing?
My partner has an opportunity to design a site for a newspaper she writes for, but has never done this before and doesn’t know what to quote...3 -
We had a meeting where all the devs on a large sprint team were told they must attend late that evening. The gist of that meeting was 'well done your all working hard and done some good work but we have over committed so work harder!" but they took an hour and a half to make the point.
-
Was watching the Google live event. Must confess that I'm highly disappointed with the looks of the Pixel 2 . I guess 2017 is just not the year for Google! I mean I love the software improvements but let's admit it that inspite of us being software devs , we ourselves love good design! The pixel 2 just does not make the cut according to me. It looks like a brick. Google does need some hardware devs!10
-
Is it a good idea to go to a coding bootcamp and shell out thousands of dollars? How about a college? I know some devs think it’s best to self learn and pay no one. I’m currently trying to make a big decision and looking for pointers.3
-
I'm curious if there are other devs who also do some wireframing or designing. If you do, which tool(s) are you using for it?6
-
That moment you forget to tell the devs about the new tests and end up doing brute force for some pen testing and load capacity and they do a rant of you
-
So Docker is pretty amazing, but I'm finding myself immensely frustrated at all the stupid shit devs do with their Dockfiles and stacks. Like the surprise of finding out Jenkins clients aren't setup for SSH or stacks opening up 5 public ports when all they really need are a bunch of private ports. Or how Jenkins deployments expect crazy tags so I have to add some really stupid tags to my own nodes.
How is it so hard to comprehend Docker for devs? It's so easy that I'm in utter bliss when I stop trying to use 3rd party stacks.1 -
hey devs, i'm a web dev, i'm honestly tired with php, js, html, css, looking for some cool recommendations to learn n enhance skills19

Implementing IM in devRant so devs can connect with each other, and get some private space, discuss new ideas. Change the world...3

Atm my face is like devrant's icon.
Tired (need some sleep)
Shit task to do.
Don't want to see colleagues face (even though I like them).
Internet not working (hence this rant on my phone through 4g).
Looks like some ppl will always get devs wrong.
:/ -
freelance devs:
do you experiment with new technology on your client projects (and do you bill (some of) the extra time?) or on your own time (meant for learning)?2 -
I despair at how most devs don't want to learn or self reflect if their code is clean.
It makes me hate this job some days. -
To all the remote devs out there, I pose some questions.
Do you prefer working remote?
And what are your personal pros and cons for remote dev positions.16 -
We use some odd names during development cycles as devs.
Anyone have favorite Git repository or code names for projects you have worked on?
I had project "furry-wookie" for a personal project once upon a time.5 -
Question, !rant
To all my fellow Java devs, what are some things that have come out in JDK8 and JDK9 that you think are the most useful?
I know very little about the new features, but after learning about lambdas I wondered what other golden nuggets there might be. Thanks in advance!1 -
When, despite it being an Angular app, some of the other devs insist on using jQuery... For everything.1

Hi devs! I am about to make some app for Fedora, but I'm kinda newbie. I know basics, but i wanna learn new stuff. Okay, straigth to the point: What would you recommend me to make and in what language?6

The fear of missing out (FOMO) is gonna get us into trouble some day. #keepitsimple.

I'm about to buy a new desktop pc, looking for some that can run visual studio 2015 without problems, i also use netbeans and mysql. I was thinking in a amd fx 8230 e (8 core) with 16 gb ram and a 1gb video card ... or a amd a10 7860k(4 core /integrated gpu) also with 16 gb ram. What do you think guys? Whats better for software development? I'll appreciate some devs advice17

For the game devs out there … Is following a game developer career a good idea ? We always hear about crunch and no work life balance. Im thinking about changing my job( currently a dev at a fintech company) for a while and need some insights from you guys :)6
-
I wonder how some devs claim Visual Studio is good, i don't currently use it, maybe it got better, but just the idea of being a microsoft product makes me feel less of it, I'm just wishing for some clarification here14
-
Never had a real fight referring to any development - stuff, because most devs around me are more experienced and most of the time I can see the point in their opinions. I definitely had some discussions about some constructs in C++ for example. But thats it.
-
Would some Android devs please step up? At the rate all the cool apps are popping up on iOS I'm gonna end up with an iPhone again and I don't wanna go back to the ecosystem :/4
-
Not a rant, but a cheer!
Reading other devs rants on devRant released some of the tension and muscle knots that had built up during the week. Reading devRant should be prescribed by doctors! -
When you find that some devs decided that UserProfile.description:String entity field requires a CLOB data type.........8

Hey guys, this question isn't really dev related, I just want to know some of the devs on here's musical tastes, so please commemt your favorite music genres, bands...etc4

Windows is stupid
My desktop is in my room, and consistently every night at around 11 to 12 it wakes up from sleep, consequently waking me up. I did some troubleshooting and apparently it's doing "automatic maintenance"? I couldn't find a way to turn it off.
If any other devs have had this problem, please help, I'm getting sick of this.15 -
web devs... what are the commom screen sizes you use for responsive design. I used the bootstrap grid but there are some tablets which resolution is higher than a normal conputer and that tablet is considered as a computer. Is there any css-only-way to make a difference between desktop, tablet and cellphone?4

A few days ago I took some time off at short notice to help someone close to me with their medical condition.
On the same day the CEO of the company made a request that only I could've fulfilled out of 12 devs so yesterday I was reprimanded for it.
Why don't companies do something to actively increase the bus factor on projects? -
Suppose you wrote a library for some purpose in a language. How do you get other devs to use it? How does it become known among the devs, assuming it follows proper language guidelines and fulfills it's purpose?2

Some devs are just plain lazy. Will use:
$_GET[name]

$_GET["name"]
further down. WTF?5 -
Need some help finding a cartoon for a post I'm writing.
You know the cartoon about devs where there's a mountain climber and he sees the peak, and goes "just a little bit more..." But then he reaches it sees it's actually not the top.
Been looking for it but can't find it now... Anyone know where I could find? -
Follow up to this rant/story:

I have my final interview this week and I am very excited and the more I think about it I get nervous.
This time one of the senior devs from last time will be present, some dude from the business department and another guy who had no information on the internet about himself.5 -

I tink some people on devrant here also would be interested in this event.
i am also going and hope te see more devranters there! ID't by there laptop stickers!1 -
Hey Guys,
This is not a rant but more of an advice post. I'm studying Economics and computer engineering in Germany, but our programming course is really bad. I wanted to ask some of the experienced devs if there is a good website or a good book where I could learn Java?
Hope you guys can help me3 -
Need some advice 🤔
This other dev company is unsecure and my client which is also there's should be secure
So Im getting them to secure it but what if they only do it for my client all their other clients are unsecure and they are teaching the young devs to do it unsecurely
Huge ethical issues here... -
Most of these windows lovers here exist just because windows haters don't have a solid reason and follow up on those who actually do have good reasons to hate windows.
Moral of the story: Don't hate windows just because you think all the devs hate it. Come up with some decent reasons to avoid gamers and microsoft warriors from crushing your rant.23 -
Have a freelance job where they require documentation of the code for later development. (+ I'd like to document my personal projects for practice)
Any web devs that could give some pointers on what kind of docs you would like to get if someone hands you a legacy project?
Obviously: comments in code and db structure and relationships1 -
I feel like I'm making friends here but then sometimes its like gaps of hours without activity ... 🤔 ... Then ... I realize I have been lurking along too much and make some posts and comments and there it is! 🤗🔥
Activity 🤷♂️
Thank you for that :/ us devs need eachother -
Some Devs at work can listen do podcasts without losing focus. I wonder how they can do that. Maybe it depends?
I love those with horror stories but I always lose track of the narrative.9 -
Get a solid educational foundation in software engineering. There is so much more than just developing or programming. In addition be sure you get a solid understanding of object oriented principles. This really makes the difference between highly educated devs and self taught devs. The latter almost always have some lack of knowledge.
-
Guys, I'm getting a bunch of offers to work as a Frontend Dev in Berlin and some in Paris. I just wanted to ask you devs in those cities how it's like (especially the expats).9

My mind is so tired that I am unable to concentrate on people rants. I guess some sleep, couple of energy drinks and coffee would make me ready to work later tonight. See ya devs.

Small start-up story:
The company hired independent foreign devs. The tech lead developer has decided to leave (due to some disputes with the boss(es)). The rest of his team are subcontractors/other independent devs that are good friends with the lead dev. We also recently adopted a 'scrum' which they really dislike.
So I guess there is a small change we will have a back-end team in the near future.2 -
Why do some firms think you can skimp on hardware for devs. I am expected to do full stack windows Dev on a 3 year old dual core Dell with style 16gb of ram. Asked for a replacement you need management approval for anything better than a 128 ssd and 8gb of ram. Some of our databases are > 100gb.3
-
I really love some of the job posting I saw in my community. It ALWAYS ALWAYS starts with something like this.... We are looking for experience devs that can build platforms LIKE Facebook, Alibaba, PayPal, Amazon...(a lot of big names) .Gosh. Those expectations.

Entropy wins. More useless accumulated historical nonsense in each programming language. Complex software stacks impossible to reach the bottom. However C and C++ still there possibly even some Cobol and Fortran zombies. And we devs still writing our ifs and loops for that kind of legacy stuff.
-
Maybe stackoverflow is truly what bitchy devs deserve, it is just amazing how lots of ranters don't accept any kind of comment, well, try to swallow your shitty ego and appreciate someone else wasting some time to do some thinking about your shitty problem. shit.

So you wanna sign up to our useless newsletter? You really do? Alright just fill out , and . Thanks for taking your time!
Why are some devs just so fucking lazy :|1 -
Hey guys, need help from some web devs. I have few stores and I coded a php/html table for reporting purposes. I don't like that table, also its not responsive on mobile phone. Any advice how could I change the layout up?14

Android devs, what is your preferred advertising network for your applications? I’ve been using admob mostly but it limits my adverts very randomly while I don’t even touch my apps and was thinking of using some other network for my new apps. What had worked best for you guys?2
-
I really dont think the project manager who passed out from IIM recently deserves to be paid so much than us devs. I don't know why but I feel it's not fair to pay someone 3 times that of my salary for just sending emails and having some meetings..3
-
"We're surprised some tasks were getting done faster after you left."
No shit, Sherlock. 3 teams, each having multiple devs waiting with their own support queue, sat in on my handover. If they weren't getting done faster you're in a lot more trouble than you thought and I'd have jumped ship much faster. -
Good morning all,
New to this app and figured I could use it to learn a few things and to meet some people in the field. Currently studying game design and learning C# in Unity. Any other game devs in here?3 -
!rant but more of a question to all you devs out there in the netherlands.
Anyone of you ever considered freelancing but didn't take the step for some reason? Let me know because I can help you!!!5 -
Got a question for any web devs on here.
How would you feel about making elements in JavaScript (if you have some divs that are exactly the same) rather than having all of them in the HTML source file?9 -
So I have a client project that needs to be delivered in 3 months. The project size is significantly huge, so a lot of devs will work with me. Our seniors have its architecture defined in micro services but we have no clue how they work. I would really appreciate some community inputs on how can we scalable-ly use micro services.

As a new Monday arrives and another work week rears its ugly head, I'd like to impart some encouraging words for once:
Some of you might be working with legacy systems with code that resembles a Jackson Pollock painting.
Some of you have teams of people, both devs and managers, with the tact and intelligence of a lemming.
And almost all of us have something in our professions that we're just not looking forward to.
But take heart, my fellow ranters.
At least you're not stuck doing stuff like this:

I almost forgot how much I hate Jenkins. What should be a relatively simple deployment with some straightforward bash scripts turns into 500 lines of "clever" groovy code because devs can't help themselves. Add heinously slow execution times and no good way to test anything locally and I officially want to blow my brains out.8

Hi Devs.
Does anyone has the bootstrap theme, DashKit from themes.getbootstrap.com, or has a coupon code I can use the get some dollars off the purchase price?
I urgently need to use the template.3 -
The comments on a community site that was live for 6 months were not working. I looked at it and there was some dreadful code that threw an exception every single time, the previous devs solution was to wrap a try/catch & return 😨
-
Do any devs know of any good tutorials for using monogame or any in depth c++ tutorials?
Really want to learn some more 'serious' languages, would prefer to learn more c# and how to use monogame correctly. -
The moment when you bring up something that's got quite some positive reviews from dev community (of course from the internet), and devs around you simply dismiss your idea of even trying...1
-
Have any devs found any interesting projects with a cars OBDII port. I've seen some arduino shields and libraries for it. Curious if anyone has any cool ideas.1
-
Happens alot with Android devs 😝😝.
It does't matters how much you try to make your code run, the moment you sleep some code fairy comes to do some code magic.1 -
Fellow devs, I'm looking for a CMS which has markdown support and allows authorized entry.
Basically we are working with some clients on some IP. We want to convey what we have worked up via a website. But we want the access to be regulated.
We are currently using wiki to maintain the information.
What are my alternatives?14 -
Isn't it great when you get urgent tasks, but the documentation required for it can't be found or doesn't even exist, and the devs that worked on the project before are no longer in the company? And then the producer gives you some document that is completely unrelated?
-
Every devs love to put stickers on their laptops usually lots of. Do they earn those by some events or just purchase it?15
-
Why are some devs so insistent on doing a change one way when another works perfectly fine, is readable and maintainable and properly tested11
-
Just got myself acquainted with a senior gamedev dude in some unnamed startup studio that just got recently funded by some unnamed gigantic -company-that-makes-billions-of-bux. We were shooting darts and enjoying some booze when they let me know that they are in immediate need of devs for their company.
Goddamnit. Why is this sort of shit always happen when I am working already? Not that I'm complaining about my current work (it's still awesome, job-wise and pay-wise), but working in games, and all the bullshit associated with it, is still a dream for me, and most devs I know.1 -
Some good news for aussie devs working from home:
Easy tax deductions for working from home. 80 cents per hour
https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/...6 -
Had to come here and rant about some devs not structuring and centralize their APIs so that they're testable. /Facepalm1
-
Hey devs :)
Please help me find a project for my AP thesis. I know Java and some Mean stack. I'm supposed to start next month and it's due for Christmas. Any ideas?2 -
How to play audio on page load?
This works when you first interact with document by button click. But when you directly try to open that route /home for example or just refresh the page, audio doesnt play.
Some devs have managed to bypass this. Example is https://feetpix.wtf/home19 -
If I work at home this weekend to get some undersized stuff done by monday . Should I ask them to pay me extra?
Or we devs do not have those privileges?1 -
Hey devs, I could use some help! I need to come up with something cool to parallelize for a course I'm taking and I'm all out of ideas. Should be about 3-4 days of development. Any ideas?3
-
Any experienced devs can share some tips on what red flags to lookout for when applying for software engineering jobs and internships?1
-
Hey,
I've been wanting to take on some freelance work in my free time. As I have a lot of free time.
So does anyone know a site more geared towards amateur to intermideate dev's who want to gain experience and are willing to work at lower rates because of that ? Or any site where i can just hop on and find some work. I've been suggested upwork but that seems to be more for more experienced devs.4 -
Are there any .NET devs here who use MacBooks as their main dev machine who can share some feedback? I really like the design of the Mac but I'm not sure whether I will be very productive on it. Other laptops I'm considering are the Razer Blade, Dell XPS or HP Spectre x3603
-
The top reason was probably the people I surrounded myself with. I always loved computers and, as a result always joined cool tech-based clubs when I heard about them. The teachers there were also Devs and could do some awesome things with the code they wrote.
Hence me downloading eclipse and everything after... -
!Rant !Promotion
As I read some Devs rant they are out of job, thought to share something that came to my inbox.
Company called Toggl is hiring
Check https://jobs.toggl.com
They have some test online to try and most of all jobs are work from home too.
Try checking them out -
Hey android devs ! Just learned MVP architecture and some libs ( Dagger2, rxjava, retrofit) now can anyone explain why do i need 'testing' and how does it benefit and what should i know about it ?3

Can the awesome devs here please critique my resume and give me some useful tips or how I could improve myself,or better yet devs, if you have a position at your work place help another dev out.
I'm a third year Grad student looking for Android Developer Internships for Summer 2017.
Resume link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/... -
DevRant gets very confused about orientation. Exactly upside down for some screens (landscape), and portrait only for others. To the devs: I feel you. Sincerely—a veteran of the rotation trenches.2

Do some devs think overly complicated code makes them look smart? Why aren't we taught to code efficiently instead of complicating the whole process?!
