boss' revenge
So here https://devrant.com/rants/1349878/... posted prank played on boss. For 3days I been freaking out what boss will do as revenge (check env and alias everytime I login). Then yesterday happened his revenge.
Was doing testing on my programs & sometime some programs would run but sometime it get segmentation fault. Seemed random first but then saw a pattern... everytime I get segmentation fault and I run again it would be fine. Checked alias... nothing, /etc/crontab, env, ps -ef... nothing seemed off, cksum of my binary... correct. Fuck! "What my boss did?" asked myself. Finally .5hrs later I saw entry in my id's crontab but then 1min later it's gone from my crontab
From there figured out how boss did it:
1) He replaced ntpd with his C program that runs in background creating an entry in my crontab every few mins
2) The entry in my crontab set to run /foobar/ulittleprick.sh every 2mins
3) ulittleprick.sh picks random binary owned by me, rename binary.name to .binary.name.nitwit and create a script named binary.name
4) Then ulittleprick.sh will remove itself from cron
What the generated binary.name script does? Sleep for 2 secs, echo "Segmentation fault", then rename back .binary.name.nitwit to binary.name. It even exits with status 139! I want to cry! Worst part is comment in 2nd line of ulittleprick.sh... kill me now

So we hired a part time sales lady to work in our office. She sits right inside the entry to our area. Each morning I am amazed that I can make it to my desk without passing out. All I can think is this:

The interview was going well, their developer and I had good talks about their stack and projects, I thought I was making a good impression.
Then the HR guy had some Qs. He went through my CV, wanted to know why I left company X and what I did at company Y. He seemed quite impressed with the work experience I already had (the job I was applying for was an entry level position).
For education I had an entry at a university. "courses in computer science". He asked:
"And you finished the Bachelor's degree, right?"
Me, "well, no. I stopped after about 2 semesters. I'm a self-taught developer, all my skills..."
HR guy interrupts
"So, no bachelor's degree?"
"No, but I figured out that I am a much better learner outside of university and that I don't want to go into research."
"Thank you for coming in, we'll get back to you soon."
...
As a conclusion: I learned that german companies are still very traditional and search for employees with degrees. They don't understand how you'd know stuff if you don't have a degree.
Good thing: we also have international companies, which are happy to welcome enthusiastic and self-taught developers.24 -

I got board and decided to make a weather app.
I have designed everything except the font which is Open Sans.
The app will be created on Electron and will be my first entry into that world.

I have never been in a dev company , though I am programming now for 6 years. Started to freelance last year as android dev, making good money. Company Head Hunter called me yesterday Offering me a 60k € salary as employee. Told him : sorry, Its not that convenient for me (I Prefer to stay independent, even though it sounded very charming)...later that day he contacted me and Offered 90-100k as entry.. Wow.. I didnt even finish my degree yet and I get Offered that much. Android ftw!

Some years back I was working in a project that essentially dealt with all things related to foreigners and foreign affairs in Switzerland. You could manage entry visas, work permits, citizenship, international warrants, Interpol requests, etc.
One of the test managers (from client side - i.e. the government) was once manually "testing" and mixed up the production and test instance, to both of which he was logged in at the time.
The test case then ended up setting up an entry ban against himself, as he used his own name for testing...
Next time he returned from vacation the border control at the airport were like "Uhm, Sir, we can't let you into the country. Please come with us." :D :D
(He managed to clear that up in end, I dare say, though, that he learned his lesson.)4 -

Hello devRant, a question for you.
I'm looking to redisign/setup my server 'infrastructure'.
It'll exist out of:
7 vps's (6+gb ram/500gb+/100mbs up/down per vps)
2 dedicated servers running as virtualization servers. (16gb/4tb/1gbit up/down and another one but let's leave that one out for now because it's gonna take a shit ton of time to solve that clusterfuck)
One server will function as an entry point for all websites I run, multiple database servers and multiple backup ones.
Any advices/tips/ideas?

Browsing job postings, and some of these requirements are just crazy, and/or wtf. Here's an example:
Front End developer wanted, junior to mid-level. An ideal candidate will be an expert in PHP, C#, and Java. Minimum experience of 10 years. Estimated compensation 30,000 per year.
Entry level full stack developer. Must be an expert in SQL. 5 years experience, BS in computer science required.
Web Developer intern - must have 3 years of experience. Must be an expert in x, y, z. This position is unpaid.

Once a month I get a crash for the stupid PHP site I am in charge of because the guy who made the database made the primary key of a table a varchar. It is a number 99.9% of the time but the dumbass customer always enters one entry with a string cuz the dumbass db Dev let them. I emailed the dumbass Dev telling him he is stupid and he said it is part of their philosophy. I told him I still think he is stupid so he emailed my boss.

I was once using an app, made by my friend which could be used as a handy reference for programming topics. It crashed every time i clicked the last entry of the list. I told him that the app has a bug, probably some position mistake and he denied, saying that he doesn't need feedback from a guy who didn't code applications. I learned to code java and started android that night and knew I needed to give him a reply, a good one.3

What features would you want in a logger?
Here's what I'm planning so far:
- Tagged entries for easy scanning of log file
- Support for indenting to group similar sequential entries
- Multiple entry types (normal, info, event, warning, error, fatal, debug, verbose)
- Meta entries, so the logger logging about itself, e.g. disk i/o failures.
- Ability to add custom entry types, including tag, log-level, etc.
- Customizable timestamp function
- Support for JS's async nature -- this equates to passing a unique key per 'thread'; the logger will re-write all the parent blocks for context, if necessary. if that sounds confusing, it's okay; just trust that it makes sense.
- Caching, retries, etc. in the event of disk i/o issues.
- Support for custom writers, allowing you to e.g. write logs to an API rather than console or disk.
How about these features?
- Multiple (named) logs with separate writers (console, disk, etc.)
- Ability to individually enable/disable writing of specific entry types. (want verbose but not info? sure thing, weirdo!)
- Multiple writers per log. Combined with the above, this would allow you to write specific entry types (e.g. error, warning, fatal) to stderr instead of stdout, or to different apis.
- Ability to write the same log entry to multiple logs simultaneously
What do you think of these features?

I did a high value transaction with Google Pay, and now I cannot see the transaction details in history for this specific transaction (The money was transferred correctly though). When I open the history entry, it says "Something went wrong, please try again".
So after waiting for a week, I went to report a bug with Google from within the app. And when I press submit, I get an error.

I've been taking a bunch of boot camp 'entry' type tests to do some research for the school I'm building - and these things are strange. To qualify, some of them want to make sure you can do basic algebra and others want you to be very comfortable with higher-order JS function type stuff - and then you get questions like this : /

So at the end of February, my 8 year marriage met it's catastrophic end and I had to immediately relocate, with nada, to a state I've never before set foot in. I was hoping to find an entry level tech position, as I am largely self taught and don't have any certs. So far nothing. I spent 7 years as a cable tech, have to wait another few months to apply at the cable company, but everywhere else tells me I'm overqualified, or need certs/experience in the field. It's a bit discouraging. That's it. Rant over.4

I just got offered my first position for a Junior developer gig. they are offering me more money than I expected and otherwise I'm super amped to take it.
what makes me nervous is its my first programming position. I have an IT/Programming bachelor's but not a pure Computer Science degree.
I was asked no technical questions and I don't know if it was clear that I'm very much looking for entry-level work. I guess the fear of failure is creeping up on me.9 -

Even so, I don't think I'll ever fully get past the continuously lowering barrier to entry on sites like medium and free code camp, and at times even alligator.io. The information routinely ranges from wildly inaccurate to dangerously wrong with few checks and no peer review can't be good for the industry in the long run.

Long but hilarious:
I was deeply concerned about how we have a single, non-paginated call to a backend service, returning hundreds of entries, which has to be enriched with constant data fetched from our db for each entry. FOR EACH ENTRY. AND FOR EACH REQUEST.
I voiced my concerns to my PM, who called me a "rage prophet" for it.
As expected, the call took 20-something seconds to complete.
Ten minutes before the CEO comes over to have a look, another dev changes his loosely-related service, and the entire super-heavy, sprawling abyss of enrichment pipeline returns in sub-second timing!!!
CEO: guys, this is too fast. You have to slow it down a bit. It doesn't seem reliable that we're able to get all this data immediately.

Today I experienced cruelty of C and mercy of Sublime and SublimeLinter.
So yesterday I was programming late at night for my uni homework in C. So I had this struct:

and my program compiled. But at the output, there was something strange...
There were some weird hexadecimal characters at the beginning but then there was normal output. So late at night, I thought that something is wrong with printf statement and I went googling... and after 2 hours I didn't found anything. In this 2 hours, I also tried to change scanf statement if maybe I was reading the wrong way. But nothing worked. But then I tried to type input in the console (before I was reading from a file and saving output in a file). And it outputted right answer!!! AT THAT POINT I WAS DONE!!! I SAID FUCK THIS SHIT I AM GOING TO SLEEP.
So this morning I continued to work on homework and tried on my other computer with other distro to see if there is the same problem. And it was..
So then I noticed that my sublime lint has some interesting warning in this line
entry *arr = (entry*) malloc (sizeof(arr) * n);
Before I thought that is just some random indentation or something but then I saw a message: Size of pointer 'arr' is used instead of its data.
AND IT STRUCT ME LIKE LIGHTNING.
I just changed this line to this:
entry *arr = (entry*) malloc (sizeof(entry) * n);
And It all worked fine. At that moment I was so happy and so angry at myself.
Lesson learned for next time: Don't program late at night especially in C and check SublimeLInter messages.7 -

So a few months ago, I had this massive feature to add to one of the projects I look after. That’s usually not a problem, turning a sprint into a month+ but what ever, this feature was going to save hours of data entry and is extremely needed!!!
Come to present day, this feature hasn’t been used once, and probably won’t be for another 6 months. I just love deploying “needed” things that don’t get used. -

Need to go old school again, go back to hosting their own servers and peer to peer mesh networks. Eliminate the shackles of big tech... Eliminate the control and power they have over you. Recently got out of the military now I work a full time job, have a wife and a 15 month old son, go to college full time online and try to learn Java and android development in my other time. I want to work as a developer so badly but I'm just not good enough yet. It's also super hard to know what level of knowledge you need to obtain a job because all entry level positions want you to have years of experience in 10 fucking languages and shit like what the fuck? No breaks, hungry to succeed.10

This one guy on our team gets weird sometimes, and refuses to commit his shit until the last minute. He says "Don't worry, I'll handle all the merging, it'll be fine!"
What he forgets is that much of our code relies on his! His latest commits reworked a couple entry points and a class definition. No backwards compatibility.

Design an application that could find logs between two timestamps where the logs are stored in 10000 files, each with a file size of ~16GB.
For an entry level position this was a really good and interesting problem to solve.11 -

If you're using the adwaita-dark gtk theme, you may have noticed that the text entry fields on lots and lots of sites make your text almost impossible to read, using firefox. You can fix that by creating/editing the, "widget.content.gtk-theme-override" key(in about:config), setting it to "Adwaita" and restarting firefox.5

So, currently I am on Vacation and my dad asked me to train two of his staff members to use computer for data entry and basic usage stuff.
Now both guys are total noobs and have never used a computer before.
So I decided to take this opportunity to conduct a simple experiment. I am training one on Windows and other on Ubuntu to check out which one performs better.

Currently, I am fucking around with Rust since I believe it is the best offering by far in terms of writing webassembly programs, or at least the one I like the most (blazor makes me pp soft, but I am still hoping it gets better)

But yesterday I almost reached my breaking point when the guy I was training (who is not young nor entry level) asked me where the CSS files were for a static HTML page. Dear diary, the part of the website that allows users to post their own articles - based on an robust rights system - through a rich text editor, is done! It has a revision system and everything. Now to work on a secure way for them to upload images and use these in their articles, as I don't allow links to external images on the site.

Dear diary, today I finally finished the image uploading feature for my website, and I have secured it as well as I can.
First, I check filesize and filetype client-side (for user convenience), then I check the same things serverside, and only allow images in certain formats to be uploaded.
Next, I completely disregard the original filename (and extension) of the image and generate UUIDs for them instead, and use fileinfo/mimetype to determine extension. I then recreate the image serverside, either in original dimensions or downsized if too large, and store the new image (and its thumbnail) in a non-shared, private folder outside the webpage root, inaccessible to other users, and add an image entry in my database that contains the file path, user who uploaded it, all that jazz.
I then serve the image to the users through a server-side script instead of allowing them direct access to the image. Great success. What could possibly go horribly wrong?

It took me two full weeks to study this complex system (the system is a nice piece of work) and learn about graph theory to trace this bug reported by the client in order to find out that it was a data-entry issue. I had to trace x and y coordinates to debug this issue.
Although the result was a bit frustrating, it made feel capable and responsible. It was a good feeling in the end. -
I don't understand some job ads. The companies want developers with 3+ years of experience in everything for entry level positions.
Aren't there any entry level positions for entry level developers with less experience?
If this is the norm, how do junior devs get the experience they need to be qualified for these "entry level" positions?

So I'm a junior candidate & keep getting senior , way senior job reqs. There's no way you can put job preferences on Dice so I had to put "Jr/Entry Level only" at the end my name lol & still keep getting these.
I think they don't even look at your resume. Just blast out emails hoping they get something.

Demo for client goes bad when we encounter a bug adding a new entry into the back end. Entry shows up in the admin but not the front side.

Looked into it and it turns out the bug was actually a feature. Apparently when you assign an "end date" to a date in the past... by design, it won't show.

No, people that know HTML are a dime a dozen. It's true that web developers are becoming common in CS, I mean everything is web based now and there's a low barrier of entry. But web devs still get paid well when they know what they're doing, and that means that demand hasn't plummeted like everyone suggests.7 -

Haven't ranted for awhile but here it goes...
In a meeting with a front end user yesterday. They don't like the entry screens on our Oracle ERP system. They want us to provide them with a tool so they can create new entry screens to replace those they dont like. They want full autonomy over that tool and no interference from IT. Oh, and they want unfettered database access to the production data, including full ability to execute DML. I so wanted to say 'Are you high?'.1 -
Who would be interested in reviewing an old peice of Python code I wrote..? It's a few years old, and it uses basic procedual generation to cypher text (entry, or ASCII files) using a hashed password. It's a command line tool.
I used to brag about how "secure" it was, and now I'm curious if it is secure or not.
I plan on picking it back up and open-sourcing it, but I want to know what problems might be wrong with it now.9 -
New level of efficiency/laziness:
Used Tasker to autodial me into my daily stand-up conference calls. If my "AtWork" variable is set by the calendar entry, and If my "Jabra" headset is connected.

Spent all morning debugging a script I wrote to compare 2 CSVs of tables from 2 different dbs.
It generates a unique key for each row using the data.
For some reason couldn't match 1 in each...
After all morning of debugging and scrutinizing the data in the dbs itself... I found the root cause....
One for loops in the program skips the first entry... -
So, apparently, content entry is front end development.
It's all right there on our old site, just copy and paste it ... Complete with millions of annoying span and font tags you used.2 -

had to redo my company's entry form, for some reason (some reason being their databases are all redundant and no one talks to each other).
was filing the form and had to attach a file, and the form reset 😑
not just that, but the form also asked for my birthday, my age and my age group, separately, and instead of having a dropdown to select my state, there was a radio buttons list 🤦♀️

I understand that its very inefficient to call every applicant back or to give valid feed back as to why they were not chosen but I find it hard to believe that I was not chosen for an entry-level programing position when I have knowledge in everything they sought.

Is it basically that a junior developer has some practical experience where an entry-level developer has very little to none?3 -

I started out as a data entry guy. I learned VBA because dealing with thousands of products in excel by hand was a pain in the ass. Among other things, I wrote a macro to combine multiple products into an importable Magento custom product. From there I learned HTML, CSS, JS, and PHP and never looked back.1

Our timetable for lectures are online as "rapla" eventsystem. I want to write a small app including a timetable. As I didn't found any way to get the lectures as JSON (Bad documentation of API) but only as formated (and ugly) HTML View, I just wrote a small node module that parses the html body with cheerio and fetches all needed data of each entry in a week. Worked out pretty well, will add more functionality.

I was part of shortlisting committee for workshop happening soon.
So I wrote a script to rank the entries according the answers given to particular question.
There was particular question asking " link for thier social presence?"
Guess what more than 60% ppl wrote as LinkedIn, github, stackoverflow..etc !!! instead of giving the URL.
So I thought of ranking these ppl low, out of frustration, and modified my algorithm such that if those were entries ,rank lower, but my algo failed for one entry which had linkedln as the entry and my algo Did not rank him down.
After 1 hr of debugging found that entry had spelling mistake it was spelled as Linked"L"n.(font was not able to differentiate)

Been working shitty odd jobs since I was in high school and college. Spent the majority of 2017 looking for any entry level tech job just to see what kinds of jobs I can land with current work/school experience.
Needless to say I had the absolute pleasure of quitting a doctor's office that I spent five years at. Now I'm in my first week working in tech support where they're actually going to pay for me to take classes and get certs. Couldn't be happier and I'm writing this to send positive energy everyone's way.2 -
Did the simplest corridor gen I could think of. The tile that makes up corridors is different than the tile that makes up the rooms. They are drawn the same here though. In the floor data structure they are different types. This will allow me to easily place doors the like. The dots are potential door placements.
Now that I have simple room gen working I can work on filling it with 3d models to make up walls, doors, etc.
Most of the time the rooms connect on the whole map. But once in a while they do not. I like this as I will incorporate mining. The final map will be much bigger. This is 32x32 and I want 256x256. I will need to figure out how to determine room density versus grid size.
I need to spend some time cleaning up the code and try and generalize the code. I will need to allow for pregenned rooms as well with defined entry points. The entry points on these rooms is all random. It will probably be tricky to do random room to pregenned room corridors. Proximity seems to work. So prox to a predefined door location should work.

Designing with "real" data
In Interaction Design Uni i've got this assignment to design a prototype for an "Ebay for used books". A requirement is that we have use "real" Data and not lorem ipsum for our design prototype tools. Which is a fair point but....
It's about 50 book categories (crime, history, romance) we have to cover, and for every category the prof wants at least 2 Books.
I've don't have the time to type in the (meta)data for 100 books at 30 JSON properties by hand. What would be your advice?
Do you maybe know a easy to use online bookshop API? (remember I'm a tech savy designer not a dev)
Or do you know someone in a low income country who does data entry? Or any experience with hiring someone on fiverr?

Treating every OBVIOUSLY continuous-valued entry as a 'category'.
All searches for this problem turn up tutorials and documentation on how to CONVERT continuous and numeric values into classes or categories.
Not a single fucking document addresses the problem of when pandas or xgboost refuses to treat numeric inputs as numerics and insists on pushing an error that your data is categorical when every fucking inspection shows the type as numeric.9 -
Not sure if it should be a joke or a rant, but something rather funny (at least to me) happened today.
TL;DR; Someone's outlook was crippled by 100k+ of warning notifications
So we have developed a server that has an internal database that wraps around an elastic search instance, that is managed by a POS vault/storage solution, that we have to use for legal reasons. The elastic search is "provided" by the software, but we keep this internal database just to be sure and totally not because it's unreliable POS.
Anyways, they take data integrity very seriously, so every warning our server produces is emailed to someone in charge to review it and if necessary forward it to us. This will be important later on.
Couple of days ago we got error forward when trying to write an entry into the POS software we get an error, because an object we tried to write already existed. After some investigation we concluded an entry was missing when the internal database was created, so we asked them to repopulate elastic search to solve this problem.
When start the server we always sync the internal database to the elastic search and emit a warning when an entry is missing in internal database or vice versa. And well... almost all of them were missing, which caused our server to emit ~40 warnings/ms. Poor outlook. Still investigating for the cause, but damn, I never expected I'd take down someone email account by accident -
So, I work for a startup, and I'm officially a fullstack guy, but with focus on backend, thusbour front end is bootstrap. We're currently are looking for a ui/ux/frontend person. Since we're a startup it would only be a 20% position an the max amount we could afford (as we're a startup) would be 800.- CHF a month for a freelancing position.

The more I use snaps on Linux, the more I feel like we came the full circle. Installable package (snap) contains a bundle of all dependencies, and installs them in an isolated system path to avoid version incompatibilities. Snaps can can have some sort of install-time configuration, and they create links to a handful of entry points rather than adding all executables to the path. In short, they do the exact same thing Windows installers have been doing for the past 30 years.18

Back in the day I was a website administrator. At one point it involved cropping images in Photoshop for 6 months then doing data entry to new website. Man that sucked.
Encouraged me to learn to program then became a web developer at the same company. -
I would like to learn how to better automate workflows. I find it fascinating that you can control one program with another. Especially GUI apps. I have automated apps before to reduce human error and boring data entry work. It would be amazing to take this to a new level. Perhaps even automate specific programming work.
Machines programming machines would be fascinating as well. -
I was construction management for ~9 years, then I quit with really no back up plan, and decided to pursue a career in development. After a little self education I started checking Craigslist every day for internships/entry positions, and applied for all of them. Within a couple weeks I found a company willing to give me a shot, 2 years and a few agency jumps later in Still kicking.

the industry we try to make for them their first inhouse app, is having a lot of data that we need to import to the app. (machines, workers, materials, products, etc). The problem is that they want to give them to us in excel files, instead of making data entry. So thats ok for start, but after some point of complexity and relations we figured out that it turns to be a deadend.
How do you manage situations like this, with huge old fashion companies??4 -
Applying for an entry level software job and having the "let's do a hackathon" project. It's super fun cos I know the effort I put in doesn't actually matter since you'll just choose someone more experienced. But I still have to go ahead and put in max effort or you'll have a reason to call me lazy :(

I’m trying to start my career as an entry level developer. I have had an internship for a short period of time before the company fell apart and had to go back to my retail job to pay the bills. My question is, where are you guys applying to entry level jobs at? Like I have tried LinkedIn. But I looked for entry level and it came up with a 7+ year experience description in my area. Or 2-3 years experience. I’m just trying to find an entry level job man. Like how hard is it to find that? I’m a boot camp grad as well. But even with recruiters it’s so hard to find a job in my area that would take someone on that is so green in tech.
400+ applications and like 50 interviews. Decided to put my specialization in sql and c# and focus more on those because that’s what’s more popular in my area (tulsa, ok). I’m not 100% the best programmer or developer. But man I have the drive to learn and I guess that’s not good enough without experience. I’m at a mental breaking point right now.4 -

So, we're preforming a re-write an application. It's on an application (actual mortgage application, not 'app') that has 4 different entry points. We have the most common entry point converted to our re-written application with plans to have the next couple done over the next several weeks. Yesterday, the old version broke. It was under the impression that it could grab any row that matched the borrower and then check against a hash of that data to see if it could proceed. It can't. You can't hash data set 1 and expect it to be the same as the hash for data set 2. Not a thing. When asked, the only answer we could give right away was "We'll fix it, give us a couple of minutes" and "Sorry, bad {{appName}} is bad. We don't know root cause yet. We'll let you know when we do." Was pulled aside by my manager and told my answer was unsatisfactory and I shouldn't give answers like that. I get it, "Bad {{appName}} is bad" isn't great, but it's not like we were going to give that and leave it! We needed some time!2

I wonder how fast he'll run when I mention the words "apprenticeship" or "entry level". -
I'm interning at a mech eng company. Our products have many possible permutations that customers can choose from a spec sheet.
The backend for us mechanical designers is equivalent to copying and pasting the same code (with slight changes) into a massive switch statement depending on the program's options. So many near duplicate drawings. Each with individual settings that need to be tweaked and linked to other new duplicates every time a new order comes in.
As a programmer it drives me absolute bonkers! I've talked to them about automating it but "we've just always done it this way, so it probably won't change". Well, as soon as I'm done grinding this current project, I'm hoping to put together a practical demo to change their minds.2 -

Given that a) no one I have seen with this much experience wants these positions, b) HR says they are getting applicants with this much experience, I can only assume two things:
1: People lie on their resumes.
or
2: The job market is far more saturated with good applicants than I thought.

I hate how the Java File I/O api works.....
I was developing a little noSQL database in java, just for fun.
The basic was: every entry was a json object, separated by \n.
Every entry started with the length in bytes, so i could perform a easy read of the entry with a inputstream, followed by the entry its self..
The problem?
If i had a big file with more than like 50000 entries, to alter a entry with acceptable perfomance, i had to read every entry for matching with search, than using RandomAccessFile to mark the old entry as deleted and adding the modified one at the end.
The same for delete, it was only possible to mark the entry as deleted, so the read/alter would just not read it by reading the length(which i wrote earlier) and than use inputstream.skip with the length.
To actually delete not needed entries, i created a new file and than reading the old one and writing at the same time to the new one, with skipping the not needed entries and at the end rename the new file to the old and re creating all the streams.
Why cant i just replace a specific part of the file? WTF JAVA2 -
Thoughts after a security conference.
The private sector, no matter the size, often plays a role (e.g. entry vector, DDoS load generating botnet, etc.) in massive, sometimes country-wide attacks. Shouldn't that make private businesses' CyberSec a matter of national security? Shouldn't the government create and enforce a security framework for private businesses to implement in their IT systems? IMO that'd also enforce standardised data security and force all the companies treat ITSec with at least minimal care (where "minimal" is set by the gov)

Today I spent a long hour working out how to assign a lead to a queue in apex (salesforce).
You can't just assign it, you need go make a setup entry in the database first to mark the group as a queue.
But wait, you can't actually do that in the same context as making the group, so you have to make a subprocess, and mark it as a queue in that.
None of this is documented.

Protip: Bugs exist everywhere, also in real life (no pun intended). Trying to think of possible real-life-bugfixes while commuting (train legroom too small, traffic jam on the same spot every day) makes makes the entry to your work projects easier. You simply haven't stopped thinking about bugfixes, only the project changed to "commuting".

Looking back I realise I had Lego Mindstorms. That had basic drag and drop programming for the robot. I could say I started there, but really only messed with it for my pretend play. Then I did data entry in HS. Never messed with until my wife made me pick a major so i would stop being a professional student. Started C++ in college. Where I work uses Excel, so I have been messing with the macros using VBA. Currently building websites for another class.

New data structure:
Map with repeated keys allowed. Values of repeated keys will be stored in an array.
Calling get(key) will get the array, pick a random entry in said array, and return it.
Use: Finding what the "number one rule of x," the "greatest thing ever," the "most unbelievable event," and more is. -
Wanted to add a simple log entry when a model changes state in a certain way.
Unit tests pass, functional tests pass, manual tests through application GUI pass.
But for some fucking reason the single line logging call I added results in an error 500 when the application is accessed through a REST API.
Going to have a fun day tomorrow debugging this shit. -
Every time you give me a CSV to import, why is it arranged differently to the last one, missing info that is required for the point of the thing I'm importing it into, and I have to spend 2 hours going through it with a text editor and even a hex editor? At first it didn't make sense to create one class for that but I decided to follow my SOLID gut. It ended up being almost 100 lines long with just one entry function working as a route controller. A mix of both python 2 and python 3. 4 entry points (although, this was done for the sake of microservices).

Cisco Jabber is a load of shit. I don't really know how to get chat logs with people I haven't added to contacts from the UI. So I just open the SQLite database it saves locally to read. Every single IM entry contains a ton of HTML/CSS to keep formatting. Who writes software like that!1

I work in an agile environment and I act as scrum master. There is one team member I have been trying to get on the rails for two years now. Today she went off at standup and one other team member commented it was like listening to a diary entry. It’s true. I’ve been to agile open hours with this problem so many times- glad we are only in the office two days so I can mute myself and react. Anyone else have team members taking standup meetings hostage? Been wanting to jump and get an Oculus Rift for a while now, but being a Mac user having to purchase a dedicated slave machine to power it has proven a greater barrier to entry than my finances allow for at the moment.
That said, with the Go having come out recently it seems interesting enough I'm almost tempted to jump on it, what with only being $200 and based on the positive Ars Technica review. Anyone have any particular thoughts or recommendations either way?1 -

Working on programming a user interface so a user can select a line in a graph. I have a rotated mouse area to match that of the line to be selected. This mouse area can detect when a mouse enters the area. This seems to be working well. But then I noticed it was lopsided. Entering the area from one direction was not showing entry as soon as from another direction. Then I realized that the black border of the mouse was not being used to trigger entry into the area. It is the white area of the mouse tip that triggers this. The black area is only to provide contrast so you can see the mouse.
So on a mouse, and in mouse point selection on Ubuntu, the black border of the mouse only servers to provide contrast to the controlling white area of the mouse.

The other day i made a rant saying that having an index.js as entry point is misleading, in my opinion. it could have been implemented in so many and better ways but that's what we have because that's what the nodejs creator decided to do.
My previous rant wasn't well seen because everybody was saying that index js it's actually a good thing.
So I started to do some research because I've an important experience in software architecture and i was trying to understand why people couldn't get my point. Fortunately i found that even the creator of node itself regrets his choice to use a file as an entry point for modules and imports. We have a form for order entry, where the colleague have to put the VAT number of the customer, bc the customer might not be encoded in pur db. After a while I checked the inserted record, and saw strange numbers, that resemble customer ID. After pointing out at colleague I receive this answer: "well, few of those have an ID, and I didn't want to look after VAT number. I think it's the same, no?"

Why are end users so braindead? "omg I deleted the whole db" turns out they wanted to delete one entry but pressed the wrong delete button.
Especially older people who are braindead. Same with self service systems that braindead people have problems using because they are not "user friendly" (read: n00bed down so a 1 year child can use it)7 -

Why is everybody using "wpa_passphrase" instead of "psk" in wpa_supplicant.conf is beyond me. You have an option to avoid plaintext passwords, the wpa_passphrase CLI tool even generates an entry for suppliant configuration, yet it seems nobody is using it.9

Helo everyone , I am planning on learning some new tools and languages side by side working on this project which would be an application for creating or managing some lists for any tasks or some web series and categorize them as on going or completed or planning for now and . I want to web scrap information about that task with some pictures and text information whenever you add an entry to make it catchy and informative.
For example if I add any series name like FRIENDS and label it as on going so to make that entry not look boring my app will add some pictures and texts from google using web scraping.

Most developers are morons.
Because the field of software development has a relatively low barrier of entry, we naturally have a large and steady supply of under-trained and clueless keyboard monkeys, hereby referred to as zombies.
The reason the industry is set up this way is because companies need a steady supply of new talent. Big Tech is so greedy, they snatch most good talent and bench them, leaving the scraps for everyone else. Other companies lower their standards and hire anybody that can copy and paste. Most entry-level software work at smaller companies is usually low risk and high churn and that's where the low barrier of entry comes in.
I have nothing against zombie developers, so long as they know their place.
I've seen too many zombies think they're CTO material after 2 years of fixing javascript bugs, or think that if they watch just enough egghead.io videos, they'll be promoted to senior.
Typically a zombie developer will go down one of two paths: 1) they either burn out and realize that software isn't what they're meant for (most common scenario) or 2) they actually get good and decide to stick around.
The ones who stick around though usually do so because it hits a sweet spot for them. To them, software is:
- Interesting enough to do it for a full-time job
- Good enough at it to secure a steady job at a two-bit company
- Pays enough to pay the bills
These people don't have a deep passion for software. It's basically just a full-time hobby for them.
And I have nothing against that. The market is satisfied, they're satisfied and I'm satisfied so long as they don't start thinking that they and I are on the same level.
