My girlfriend comes in and sees me on devrant.
GF: "What is that app? I see you using it all the time. Is it like an endless blog with updates?"
Me: "It's kinda like facebook. But for developers. And you don't have any friends".
GF: "That seems like a sad app"37 -
Shared screen with a client over Skype. Showed them in Postman that their API wasn't working as expected. It was expecting a json. Instead it was giving error code 400 instead of 200.
Message :
"Error: No error. All OK"
I'll never forget the words of the client:
"Don't use all this fancy software, you don't know how to call APIs, open Internet Explorer or chrome and paste it in the bar. You'll see All OK, means all is okay."
*insert you dense mf meme here*20 -
Introducing new Notif filters! Now on mobile, all your notifications are broken up into category tabs and you can clear each category separately. No more digging for mentions!
Also we just released a new image preview for when a rant is shared on FB, Twitter, etc. which includes the ranter's avatar image. You can see it by sharing a rant on social media, or check out an example here: devrant.com/rants/1036286/image.png (if you change the rant ID, you can see others)46 -
My brother and I have been messing with our IBM 5150 and doing cool stuff with it. I got it to play a youtube video via telnet via my bro's mac via mplayer with libcaca (ascii video output) + youtube-dl (a youtube downloader. The mac is doing all the heavy lifting, but it is still cool to see these images on a IBM 5150, just by typing a few commands on that old keyboard... more fun projects to come with this old thing.7

Client: I want all cookies blocked on my computer.
Me: Are you sure? Some things won't work if i do that. Like using online banking.
Client: I don't use it, so it's fine.
*Two weeks pass. I have to come back and see three bankcards laying on the table*
Client: I'm not able to use online banking anymore. Can you fix it?
Come on! You pay me to give advice and help out with problems. The least you could do is listen.10 -
Boss: "it's not the same font"
Me: "yes, it is"
Boss: "don't argue with me. It's a different font"
Me: "ok it's a different font" (it's not)
Boss: "change it please"
15 minutes later and I've done nothing at all to it. Boss comes back.
Boss: "see? I knew it was a different font. This looks perfect now. Why were you lying to me before? I don't like you arguing with me"11 -
Small agency, wants to try out some voice tech. Bought a Google AIY to get started, found some limits, worked round them.
Junior developer thought it would be fun to 'teach' it to swear.
Played around with some nice dialogflow intents, etc and got it all working.
Looking pretty good, loaded it with some quippy answers and case studies to show off our services.
Just got in to find out the boss has taken it to a presentation to a client about some of the new stuff we're doing... Now we are all sitting here waiting to see how many of us have a job tomorrow :-/18 -
I was in McDonald's and annoyed to see queues for all the self-service machines. I noticed one of them had nobody queueing though. Several people walked up to it, looked for two seconds, then just walk away. So naturally I had a look myself, and I saw that it was just a string displaying a bit wrongly. Hah!
So I walk up, close that order then make my own. Nothing at all wrong with it, people just have no clue about how computers work. Nobody even tried pressing the buttons after seeing that.
Of course I put it back to the broken screen before I left. I like chaos.rant ignorant people save me time mcdonald's literally whole minutes saved definitely won't be updated for ages huge companies screw up strings too7 -
Is devRant Just for rants?
I see such a Great community here that goes way beyond complaining about PMs and users (even though you're all right, usually). I've read comments about support for depression, Anxiety, people being supportive of woman and downvoting/commenting against the common sexism that we see on the internet every single day. We have fun, we all feel like friends even though we can remember only a few names and stumble uppon them once in a while. We mostly understand each other and it all feels like a huge family. It's a Great thing to help throughout all of the struggles I have daily in Life, and I bet many people here feel the same.
Thank you all so much for making devRant this Great community. Papa bless.13 -
It was great to see Gitlab not only being transparent, but also being so empathetic towards the employee and not bashing them at all. Instead they said the more things you do the more mistakes you make. And the system/process should have contingency so that human mistakes have some tolerance margins.
That is a great workplace! -
"We care about your privacy [...]"
That's why we make it ultra inconvenient to turn off all of our advertising trackers and give you a broken list of on/off sliders that are slow as fuck. Also, why not just press the 'accept all' at the top of the page? See that big green button? Yeah green is good let's just press it and get this over with right?
Oh and that 'deny all' button? Yeah, a shame nobody actually put some programming into that thing, why not just press the green button next to it? You're only making it harder for yourself y'know...5 -
Just discovered that one of my coworkers(well...my boss really) has the uncanny ability to detect fonts and sizes with extreme accuracy.
For some of you that may be not impressive at all and some can probably do it too. But its like...not only on websites man...she can do it on things that we see printed, menus and stuff.
That to me at least is very impressive.11 -
The presentation went great yesterday.
It was great to see all the kids who are interested in robotics.5 -
I came to my sister's husband, programmer, and asked him for a book to learn how to program. He gave me a giant tome (probably to scare me out) and I read it page by page doing all the tasks. For me it was like a magic, I couldn't believe that I can write something in the notepad and then see computer do stuff because I told it to do so.5

In the project management system we use with our clients I see file named, 'instructions for backup.'
I open the file and all it contains is my name and phone number.😑4 -
A mechanical engineer, an electrical engineer, and a programmer are riding in a car.
The car breaks down and coasts to the side of the road.
"Hang on," says the mechanical engineer. "The problem is probably the engine, let me have a look at it and I'll have us on the road again in no time."
"Wait," says the electrical engineer. "The way it just stopped like that, I think it's the electrical system. Let me have a look and I'll get us going again in a minute or two."
"Hold on," says the computer engineer. "Why don't we all just get out of the car and get in again, and then see if it starts?"
Alternate punchlines:
"Why don't we open and close all the windows, and then see if it starts?"
"Why don't we remove parts from the engine until it starts successfully?"3 -
Angry Client: All the data from this account is missing. I can't work like this with the app loosing data.
Me: Checks logs, see that client pressed the reset all data button and after that the confirmation button.
Me: As polite as possible informing the client what he did.
Client: Ooh yeah I did that.
It's sad that it has come to the point where you need logs on pressing buttons because they try to blame everything on the app.9 -
Me: hello IE, you see that div with id?
IE: ...... ..... .... yes.
Me: would you like to set it as absolute and stick to bottom?
IE: ........... i don't know...
Me: but all the other guys like chrome and firefox are doing it.. come on it's not object-fit: cover; just absolute positioning. Please.
IE: ......... I can't!
Me: why the fuck not??
IE: ......because I don't see the id...
Me: FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT!!!!!
IE:...............12 -
I made a setting that hides your messages in a group chat. The UX guy said it would "cut down noise" to only see what others are saying.
I would like to tell you that I did this thing at gunpoint, but the truth is I did it out of malice. Sweet, sweet malice.
When the community reacted with the expected, uh, reaction... the UX guy got all the credit he deserved.
Sweet, sweet malice.4 -
I use different variations of the same password. Everywhere.
It's worked out good so far but I can see it all crashing down on me at some point.9 -
Client: We need this site up and running by the end of the month.
Me: Ok we need them to send creative over. Please provide it in Photoshop format.
.... A few days before due date.
Client: We have sent you all the creative. Please see email attachment.
...... Opens attachment. Creative was created in PowerPoint.
FML!! I CANNOT BELIEVE!!!
*starts twitching*5 -
1. Just because it sounds cool doesn't mean it is.
2. Automate all the things. If you can see everything from cli all the better.
3. If it isn't commited and pushed, it doesn't exist or won't after a hard drive burnout
4. Everything on your workstation should be quickly reproduceable or in a git repo.
5. Murphy is a bitch3 -
Im trying to brute force a rar i made Long ago, sadly i have forgotten the Passwort.
This is how it looks, when you to run it on the length 8-16 at the Same time(all posibilitys).
lets see how Long it will take.
I say 7 Days at 100% cpu usage😂😂8 -
After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... AND way too often I see online “learn programming in 30 days or learn programming in a day”... fuck off it’s all lies .. all wrong.. wrong methods wrong philosophy and I’m done with it...
I’m set on doing it this time, I’ve put it off too long, and longer I put it off the more I see shitty interviews! Time to fix it69 -
Noob: I hate $foo language! It sucks!
Me: Have you used the language before?
Noob: no because it sucks!
Me: have you tried using it?
Noob: no because it sucks!
Me: so how do you know it sucks?
Noob: because all my friends that use $baaa says it sucks.
Me: ........ I see your point... sheep 🐑8 -
I extracted a tangled action to its own api, and wrote a test for it.
The test failed.
I added debugging, more debugging, all the debugging. It still fails. But I can at least see why it fails!
It turns out the api finds and updates the wrong user. It finds and updates the wrong user EVEN WHEN THERE ARE NO OTHER USERS.
WHAT THE SALAMI.
Also, the user lookup it uses is extremely roundabout and takes several seconds with ~2 million users. Normally I'd fix the lookup, but it has been in production for several years, and I'm terrified it will break something if I fix it.

Placed a hidden flying unicorn as easteregg in our last business app. My boss stumbled across it and told me: "make it that all users can see it more easily without using the secret gesture."
...but ..it's an easteregg! .. :facepalm:2 -
Created a function called upDawg and started sprinkling it all over the code base. Waiting to see who catches it in our next code review.
All it does is console logs 'Not much man, you?' -
We received an urgent email from a client this morning that needed addressed immediately. We knew it was not going to be easy or fun so we did the sensible thing and began a rock paper scissors tournament to see who would work on it.
I lost... But then we see a follow up email from my boss saying he is handling it. Win!
Fast forward 6 hours, he comes out of his office and hands me a piece of paper and says he is too busy to work on it so I need to do it before going home. The paper is the email from 8am this morning... He did absolutely nothing with it for six hours except print it because a digital copy isn't good enough I guess.
I ended up working late, got yelled at by said client, and still haven't finished the fixes.
Worst of all is that I missed part of shark week because I stayed late.12 -
After disappearing since March, it makes me happy to see you all still hate your bosses and colleagues just as much as before.

Hello devRant and devs!
Next week I am going to attend to a hackathon organised by my study (24 hours) and me and another guy are going together (or, maybe one more person but not sure yet).
We are going as: team devRant!
My idea is to at least do a quick status update/vlog every x hours and maybe a webpage where I update peoples but I was wondering if anyone here would like to see the event, see the updates/vlog stuffs or maybe not at all?
It will also be live streamed onto the internet!
Would like to hear your opinions on this =).16 -
One of the things that make devRant special is it's multicultural nature. Every time I see a photo, it is from another country and even with such different people, we all relate to the same things and that is, my friends, fucking dope. No other social network is like this. Props to devRant!2
-
I mixed coffee types today... My eye is twitching and my office is spotless... And I started a program to monitor all our apps at all times... We'll see if it works in the morning 😂9
-
When a A.I. is gonna take over my job, Im gonna build a robot to steal the job of the A.I. and then kill it.
Maybe the robot will kill all of humanity, but yolo let's try it. Wanna see a real life terminator 😂4 -
I love how Microsoft updated the user interface for editing the PATH variable in windows. Now it is possible to see all entries in a table, before there was just one textfield with many entries seperated by semicolons (I know the update is already some month old now, but still happy)5

When you see this notif and realise that all the crap you put up with in work has been worth it... 😜2

“There’s too many Firefox quantum rants...”
Lemme let you in on a little secret:
It’s nothing new, get over it.
Apple released a new phone.
Windows updated.
Samsung or Google releases a phone.
Exam time.
Do any of you see a common theme? It’s the same people posting three metric fuck tons of posts about recent news. Wow, a tech person sharing tech news, imagine that. It’s just a phase, we all notice it. It’ll go away. Thanks. Have a nice day.13 -
My brain is melting.
6 hours straight of just Refactoring without a break.
Technical debt is real, it is a bitch, and so are clients to expect to 'see' changes every week.
Boss tells me we need to balance doing work on things the client can play with and the backend code that does it all... 😧ok....
'TODO: remove sample return and connect to backen' As far as the eye can see.3 -
Just wrote a brute-force attack simulation in c. Going to run it on actual hardware, with an 8-character limit, including alphabet (Upper and lower case), 0-9 and a few special characters and see if it gets done tonight ;)
I'll see you all in about 360 trillion operations.11 -
Growing up with thw crappiest netbook for 8 years, then a regular laptop, now an i3 laptop.
It pains me to see my classmates having i7 laptops and all they do with it is watch movies and browse the internet. All that wasted potential!
(Virtual Box, proccessing speeds, multitasking, and games! Donr get me started on games!)9 -
I started color-coding my bash scripts to more easily see when things start and end.
At first it was just some headers here and there, but now my terminal looks like it's shitting rainbows all over the place.
It's so pretty :37 -
*Spends all weekend writing come cool autonomous code for a robot*
*Comes to school to test such code*
*Has high expectations, excited to see it work*
*Finally runs the code*
*Robot starts shaking*
And.... It draws too much power.. God dammit.5 -
Hi all, just signed up and wanna let you know that you are all great. Didn't see any kind of hate or disrespect here at all, so thanks for being a great community:)
Of course I'd also like to get some opinions here. Tomorrow, I'll get my new PC and am wondering what Linux distros you are using and especially WHY it is your favorite..
I will mainly develop on it in C and Java and will most likely choose Debian, just because I'm used to it.9 -
Climb into bed, feel something wet under leg. Wtf? I check. Bloody slug...
There was freaking slug in my bed...
Clean it out, change sheets and all (at 4am, I got lost in the code) and then see another one climbing up the side of the bed31 -
Well, it finally happened.
After 25 years coding in all types of languages and environments, I’m no longer having fun.
It now seems like it’s a fight to get interested in the code. I used to be something that I would spend hours / days doing. Now I just want to walk away from the code.
Is it true (do you think) that after a while all you see is a for loop, an if statement, a null check and you just think to yourself. Fuck this! Because I think I’m there.
God it’s depressing to think that I no longer find it fun.4 -
Is it me or all REST api use json today ?
And xml is kinda dead ?
I always feel awful when I see an xml rest api.12 -
I guess the best feature of devRant is that the homepage, where we see all the rants, does not show who posted each rant. It just shows the rants. That's it. Great to see the app is "rant centric" and not "user centric".3
-
I would like to take a moment to thank my brain.
I dreamed about the code I need to write to create something I was struggling with! Logically it all make sense!
Just needs to try it and see how it goes.
Thank you Brain!6 -
Chrome developer tools, without it I wouldn't be able to see all the errors generated by my awesome programmer skillz

Mate - whatcha doing ...

If Microsoft bought GitHub to increase the amazing open source projects it has already been doing ( typescript and vs code) then I am all for it. This isn't your father's Microsoft and people seem to be missing that lately. Their contribution to open source software has been incredible the last few years and I'm excited to see how they grow that with the acquition.2

This, my friends, is a very common virus in Turkey called "Musallat" (which is just a tiny program that hides all of your data in your flash drive inside a hidden folder that has a blank name, and forces you to click it's shortcut to infect all other drives thag plugged in your pc) being clicked by my dumb ass friend eventhough I told everyone to not click the .lnk if they see it.
I am so fucking mad right now.4 -
Working for a company that does PC repair I see allot of computers. But this one model of Dell seems like it will never stop haunting my dreams. Windows XP and all12

The moment when your kernel compile is like you cannot see all the output not because its slow and laggy but because its so dang fast that main limitation isnt CPU but your fucking 60Hz monitor.
I literally cannot see all the output because of it. WOW. Fucking love this server.8 -
Although I see how powerful Vim (with all its variants) is, I still don't get why people are so into it.
I mean, it's 2017, we have IDEs and some of them are very good, such as VS for C#, Eclipse for C++ and so on!
* grabs popcorn *...11 -
I swear next time I see a UHD TV sold as 4K I'm gonna pop a cap in the lying fucker who mislabeled it!
4K has 552,960 more pixels dammit! This is the "720 HD" bullshit all over again!2 -
I'm going to be all tech-snobby and share one of my favourite tweets.
I hate it when I see people doing this!! -
Still fail to see why people give a fuck if you're self taught or have a degree. (By people I mean other developers, not employers.)
Why does it matter? Trick question: it doesn't matter. All that matters is their code.
And fun fact: both educated and self taught people can write shitty code.
Idk it just seems like unnecessary division in a group of people that all do the same fucking thing: program.29 -
I'm a newbie in programming, just past the very basics and all. Which is why I am a bit frustrated when i see programmers use stack overflow. I barely even understand it.😏9

"When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through." - Steve Jobs6

Don't you hate it when you come across a old internet argument but one of the people deleted all of their posts so now you just see a bunch of out of context replies.3

!dev && !rant
My thoughts go out to all the french people among us, Notre Dame was such a beautiful cathedral.
Been there once myself a few years back, glad I managed to see it before it burnt down.1 -
Programming helped me realise, that I'm growing.
Since I've learned git long time ago, all my projects are archived and I can get back to them. When I look at my old code, I can see, how much I've learned, and how much more of a developer I've become.
And it motivates me to keep going.4 -
Sorry for breaking the protocol, but I'm not here to rant. I want to thanks all the ranters (is that a thing now?) for recommending Mr. Robot (the TV series). Just watched the first episode and I can see myself watching it all day. Be back tomorrow.6
-
alright let me pull someone out of this dark theme disillusionment. Setting your IDEs or editors theme to dark does NOT improve your skills at all, it does NOT make you a better developer and it does NOT mean that you are better than someone who likes a light theme. And it does NOT make you a hacker at all. The only real benefit is increased productivity for you only (because you prefer it) . Other developers may be more productive on a light theme.
So next time I see a silly dark theme comparison I'm down voting it, peace ✌
FYI, my devrant is dark, my editor is dark and I like batman 😂😂16 -
So to start off this happened today while I was at school.
Each student gets a netbook for school and the amount of restrictions put in place are probably up to government spec. Well I brought in my personal netbook and a flash drive with a few distros of Linux on it on it to mess with during study hall(all on my own hardware).
I told my friend that about it and said I doubted it would boot because the bios is password protected and the IT guy probably removed external drives from the boot list but let him use it anyway.
5 minutes later he is showing me his screen with Ubuntu running on it, I was freaking out some and asked for it back and he gave it back to me.
About a minute later he shows me his screen. All black with white text shooting down it saying windows disk integrity check or something like that. All I see is "file xyz deleted" and was freaking out even more. I just sat there for the next 20 minutes thinking of how to explain this to the IT guy and hopefully get in less trouble.
Finally after the longest 20 minutes of my life as a student I see the windows 7 boot screen appear. Probably the one time I actually wanted to see it honestly but I was so happy to see the end of the situation.
Sorry this was so long but I hope it's fine for a first post here, I've been putting it off but after this decided to finally post.3 -
This junior dev is killing me with all of the bugs in the code ... like did you even test it to see if it works fml1
-
Those jQuery fuckers spam their shit into every damn article or video. Why do you retards even use it in 2018? JavaScript has evolved and can do all the useless shit jQuery does in an equal style.
I hate to see modern front-end tutorials using this useless ugly tool.27 -
There has probably not been any situation when I would feel more stupid than now.
I just did a refresh of windows. It means quite a lot of work, as I need to do all the WSL related config and so on.
And I did it because I'm an extremely smart man and I didn't check that my primary screen was turned off.
I WONDER WHY I COULDN'T SEE SHIT1 -
I worked with Angular for last 1.5 years now.
.
.
Now every web development project I see, I want to change it to angular.
Is it just me or you all feel the same?9 -
This poor fella is asking a simple question we've all asked it before.. It makes me angry to see that some beginners get discouraged thanks to the toxic community at stackoverflow, many of the idiots on stackoverflow forget that they were once beginners and didn't know a thing.. Even if the question sounds stupid for you, why can't you just help them, instead of being an ignorant smartass.. 😠13
-
O'joy has come, it is time to make the best if/switch statement...
Worst part I can't see a pattern in this, so I have to hardcode all this shit.
Even worser part, it has to be updated yearly... woop w00p9 -
I tried vim for a few weeks. I almost used to it. But I didn't see how I could be more productive with it than with Visual Studio Code, at all, so I switched back. Maybe because I'm super fast with my mouse because of my 2500 hours of Dota. But knowing how to use vim is super useful when doing remote stuff via SSH. Nano too basic.13

I went to get groceries yesterday, and it was raining but not hard. No big deal.
So when I pull back into the parking lot at my apartment complex, a large metal object catches my eyes.
"Holy shit I think that's a computer! I better run grab it and get inside to see if I can salvage anything!!"
So I park and run over to it. I get a few yards away from it and see what it actually was..... Someone's nasty ass broken microwave.
I got so excited and it all came crashing down after a few seconds9 -
Got bored and opened /usr/include/stdio.h to see if I can learn something from it.
But what I found... I now cannot unsee...
This whole time... it was all an illusion...
Life will never be the same again.5 -
I pulled it off! VMware on Linux is pretty rad! What you see in the pic is windows on my right monitor and Fedora on the left, Fedora serving as the host though.
They work seamlessly! (no lag at ALL)
Mind blown..

Facebook has changed so much.
There was a time when we were so connected and had so much fun there with friends. Now it’s mostly about videos and ads. That’s all I see when I scroll. I hate it now.9 -
After designing the new server architecture for our software and the security to go with it, the boss decides we should ask our provider’s solutions architects to see if it is okay, they came back and said it all looks good apart from one part which my manager did and I always said was bad practice.

Wtf is all this talk of AI regulation all of the sudden? We have barely achieved anything on AI and they already wanna put chaines on it?
Just because people are pussies who are afraid that skynet will develop rape-robots who go around giving std's to everybody they see doenst mean there should be regulations on something thats still in diapers.
ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS PROBABLY GOING TO BE DONE BY FUCKING POLITICIONS WHO PROBABLY THINK AI ONLY MEANS KILLER ROBOTS.5 -
So hello guys, I just published my first article, it might not be that good or good at all, but heck it feels great.
Anyway, see ya :prant software engineering linux refactor smile life is good medium pichardo for president article software development3 -
Is it weird that i enjoy all these rants and the dev's frustration?
it really calms me down whenever i see a long rants, creative insults, excessive swearing
because it reminds me that my situation could be lot worse, thank god I'm not in one of those situations3 -
When i ask you a question through skype or mail, I expect a fucking answer.
You might just say that you don't know. That is okay.
But we all fucking work from home and I can see you're there. FUCKING ANSWER YOU INCOMPETENT, USELESS, UNPROFESSIONAL SACK OF SHIT.
It is so fucking counterproductive. I fucking hope all the chocolate chips in your life turns out to be raisins.
It is fucking impossible to underestimate these people.
I am seriously jealous of all of you here on devrant, for not having met these washed up twats.10 -
FOTA recovery on my old phone doesnt work.
When looking on logs i got totally nothing just that the process is being killed all the time.
Tried to launch manually.
Recovery: Fuck you. I will not load.
Tell me whats wrong then.
Recovery: Noooooooo
Set variable.
Tell me whats wrong.
Recovery: libcrypto.so is missing. Cant you fucking see that ?
Uhmmm no ? You didnt post that in logs.
Recovery: Your fucking issue.
I hate you.
Recovery: Again your issue.
Tomorrow lets see if libcrypto.so makes it to boot up. -
My girlfriend needed a flash drive to back up her Chromebook. I took an old 7g I had and formatted it to exfat (standard procedure here, nothing special). She plugged it in and had some issues with it, so I told her to see erase the drive from her Chromebook. Chromebook said it would delete all 4 terabytes (4tb) from the drive. Lol. Don't know how that happened, and was tempted to try it to see how it went, but did not want to mess up her laptop or wait days for a supposed 4 TB drive to format.
Tl;dr: girlfriends Chromebook thought a 7gb flash drive was 4tb6 -
I only see rants here about people who post to StackOverflow. I use it a lot but all questions i wanted to know were usually answered so I just had to search for them. I never posted something there and don't even have an account. Anyone else doing the same thing?4
-
You see a talented developer, and you see all their github pages, and everything is just so professional and good
And then you realize "bruh I wanna be like this"
And then you realize you will never be like this, and just admire the other person's work
It's a strange feeling. Something between strong envy and just awe. More envy than awe
Example: this guy wrote a whole OpenGL bind for GoLang and made it dead simple to use. And it's all open source. And it's all under MIT license.
His name is faiface and he is my idol honestly, mostly because of pixelgl.3 -
We started working with some pretty big (in data volume) client. Around 4.000 projects with about 10 to 15 deliverables by project. Our software helps them plan/manage that.
US : Hey, so on this page we only display first 10, so it is fast and you can adjust using filters.
Client: No, I want to see all 4.000 projects on the same page
US : Well, for one year it will generate : 4000x10(deliverables)x12 editable fields. Your browser will crash. (No time to add virtual scroll)
Client: No, I want to see all 4.000 projects on the same page
US : Ok, here is pagination to help you.
Client: No, I want to see all 4.000 projects on the same page

Friend : Your bed has your laptop, your clothes and all of this. How do you even sleep here.
Me : I'm a developer. I don't sleep by choice. I am just sitting on my chair, doing stuff and a point comes when the body just can't take it anymore. That's when I hit the sack. So you see...2 -
Client - "hi, I got the mail. Is the app complete.......","...you've done this part?....","...have you done that blabla section..."
😑..I already wrote it in the mail that it is complete, dumbass. And Why don't u just flipping RUN it and see if this part and that section is working properly and tell me if your highness can spot something incomplete.
No I'm not overreacting. He acts like this all the time.2 -
I wrote a random string/int/other stuff API somewhere this year which I still regularly use because I'm a lazy fuck.
Never posted anything about it on here and the documentation isn't entirely complete (and not all the endpoints are extensively bug-tested yet) but if someone is interested I'll see if I can patch some stuff and put it on here as I find it useful!3 -

Saw Black Sabbath today, final tour. Was quite sad but it felt good to see all of them giving it all. So much energy8 -
The Linux sound system scene looks like it was deliberately designed to be useless.
ALSA sees all my inputs and outputs, but it can't be used to learn (or control) anything about software and where their sound goes. Plus it's near impossible to identify inputs and outputs.
PulseAudio does all sorts of things automatically, but it's hard to configure and has high latency.
JACK is very convenient to configure, has great command line tools (like you'd expect from Linux), is scriptable, but it doesn't see things.
Generally, all of these see the others as a single output and a single input, which none of them are.11 -
As a community of devs I really feel our search feature should have a Regex option...
I don't see all that much point to having it but still... -
Handed off a Markdown presentation to the marketing dept to add some pizzaz too---just to see what happens.

Ok I completely lost it... Been in a prod issue all week and basically just said the root cause is bc this team is blind....

so today we used putty and coded the exercise within the university's server. i wanted to use "tree" to see all the files better cause thats what i normally use. turns out i had to install it.
i type in "sudo apt-install tree"
screen: no root priviledges. <university_login> is not included in root.txt. this will be reported immediately.
i forgot i needed root priviledges smh i just wanted to see my files better XD7 -
I know we have a lot of talented people here. Piece of advice, what ever you build, believe in it. See it through. No matter how good of an idea incompleteness won't get you anywhere.
After all every other day we all analyze different successful products and say "huh... that's nothing. Even we can do that".
Well thats the difference "We" can do that, they DID it.
See your ideas through. Stay motivated =)1 -
You know something is ABSOLUTELY NOT RIGHT when you see this code.
Even more when you notice the parameter is not being used at all!
Holy crap, it is a web api deployed in production. Imagine it being called!4 -
Not planning for it at all, then see the service gain traction and traffic explodes through the roof.
Not gonna do that mistake again!1 -
i got my account perma-locked on twitter over a joke the other day and the only presented option was to delete my account. Most of the work we do is committed into various branches. Everything is merged into the master branch.
Colleague was on vacation. I was working on a bug that was fixed by him some time ago. All I had to do was find the commit and merge it into the relevant branch. I didn't know which branch to search so I just looked into master. Search all commits on master made by colleague.
All I see is:
"Merged into master"
"Merged into master"
...
"Merged into master"
MERGED FUCKING WHAT INTO MASTER?4 -

Junior Dev: Hey xxzer0, could you help me with this? I spent the entire day on it and at this point, I think I just broke Chrome.
xxzer0: *---* Okay, let me see.
Junior Dev: Do you see it? I am updating the Javascript code but it's not working at all. The browser is not even loading it... Literally, the code I just wrote is not there.

Now be me, be the fucking idiot I was and I have been my whole life, I already knew what was going on because I lost a fucking day on it as this guy.

'Open Chrome Dev Tools' -> 'Network' -> 'Disable Cache'.

I am glad to see all the pent up anger toward project managers. I quietly rage against them daily. I have even made up acronyms like "LIS" for "like I said", "DBR" for "Drive by requests" and "OSR" for "one sentence requirements". I write them on my white board and the don't know what it means.8

I've been creating a game in Unity and I made sure to tell all my friends, but now every other day when I see them they ask me if they can play it. Colleague: No it is today. Let's go out and see.
Me: Out.!! But how could you run eclipse there?

All the while I was thinking why would a node dev require eclipse, when he could perfectly work with something like vscode. Feels so stupid. -

Continue with my ALL-OUT year of JUST DO IT. Trying to see what happens when I go YOLO for a year.
It started well about 4 months ago, but I slowed down a bit. I just want to pick up the pace again and JUST DO EEET. See where it leads.

Then, towards the end of the next year, I think I'll start looking for a dev job.2 -
It's sometimes really anxiety inducing thinking that all data could be gone, if somebody decides to kill/discontinue/crash [see gitlab shitting 6 hours of data due to fucked backup strategy and shitty seperation of servers] your account/service, be it server, git-repos, backups, chrome syncs, games, music, sim card, ..

So I'm basically my family's IT guy, as you'd expect, but this is just pulling my hairs.
My mom's laptop has a weird error message saying something about a corrupt windows update database.
Not wanting to mess the system up, I decided to factory reset the computer and see if that helped.
During the factory reset, windows tells me that it can't delete all files, and that another factory reset might be in order.
Alright, I don't think any more of it and proceed to setup the account on the computer, everything works fine.
Next day I decide to run windows update on it just to see if everything works as it should, the computer restarts and immediately BSoDs on me. Upon reboot the same error from before the system reset pops up again, and I'm back to square one.

security fiasco due to a malicious npm package:
Because of a bitcoin miner present in event-stream npm module (https://bleepingcomputer.com/news/...), my entire team and I had to scan all our nodejs apps, repos and the most excruciating one, all node_modules folders across all our dev machines and servers, to see if event-stream and flatmap-stream is present, then not just delete it but update a bu**load of upstream dependencies which internally used event-stream. All due to one malicious package which was hidden several layers beneath.
And, this happened almost 8 months after the aforesaid vulnerability was first found.10 -
I just learned that you can use Android Device Monitor in Android Studio to take screenshots.

Not sure if this has been posted here already but if you want to troll someone, replace all the semicolons in their code with the Greek question mark ( ; ) and see how long it takes them to figure out the problem6

Why is it that security (hacking) distros went so popular?
I see more and more posts pictures even on devrant featuring them. Even I see people at my uni that are on kali. I can't believe all of them are that into security. I even know two linux noob friends that wont listen to advice and went to kali as first distro.
I'd never use kali/parrot/whatever vs my current manjaro setup... I'd rather go back to arch.7 -

How does everyone stop themselves getting headaches from staring at a screen everyday, all day? Migraines run in my family, so when I get a headache it's always a migraine. When I get one it stops me dead. I'm unable to do anything until it goes away. My best cure right now is excederin. It works great but I want to see what you guys have to say.13 -
When an interviewer asks, what are the steps that you take usually when given a task to do something, what do you guys say?
I said, I devote 10-20% of the time to understand the given problem - sit and explore all possible scenarios to handle, then develop a brute Force approach, improve the approach to make it more efficient, see if it handles all edge and corner cases, then write test cases for it.
( I'm thinking, the process doesn't vary a lot for most of the people?, Except in TDD - one'll write the test cases first)
How would you answer this question?
I have this feeling that I messed up something 🤔9 -
If I were to change all my passwords into hashes (so take a random word and hash it, ex 'table') and then use those on various websites, would people ever guess that my password is _an actual hash_ rather than a password in hashed form if they were to see it? Would such a meta-hash be safer if 'hackers' were to find it unencrypted?8

And the stock market is plunging again.... Who gives a fuck....
It makes no logical sense? Unless someone wants to enlighten me... But I don't see much downside...

Ordered a lovely new UHD HDR tv for the family on Monday.
MFW I see the courier is Hermes (notoriously bad).
It arrived today.
Any guesses as to the condition it was in?
Yep. Lovely crack on the screen.
Took all day to clear it up with Amazon.
And the best they could bloody do was a refund, but I have to organise the collection and pay for that (which they said they’ll refund).

Just let me add a new feature to this Wordpress site, I'll just enable debugging to see if it produces any errors.
TURN IT OFF!! TURN IT OFF!!

I'll just leave it there till client decides they want a new rebranding and start from scratch1 -

For some reason GMail removes the Inbox label to some mails (usually receipts or communications from shopping sites) so sometimes I miss important mail and not realise until days later when I go "why the fuck is there no update?" I removed all filters and disconnected all services from accessing Gmail
Does anyone else have this issue?
So anyway... Finally got pissed of enough to build an IMAP program that looks are all Unread emails (with no labels) in All Mail and then moved them to the Inbox.
Part of me is wondering is this a test? Does Google like pissing me off to see what I'll do about it? -
After having put up with 5mbps at home for months (naked dsl), finally decided to ring up and see if there was an issue. Turns out there was! All fixed now. Speed now more than triple what it was before. Aw yeah.13

Why do you root your phone?
My original reason was to enable things my restrictive carrier prohibited, like tethering. But now that carrier is years behind me. On my previous phone, I rooted to disable onerous pre-installed software. On my current phone, I see no reason to root it at all, except maybe to try out some roms.
How about you?12 -

Stop fucking abusing “auto” everywhere.
Don’t use it if you’re going to forget what type it actually is or it’s not obvious from the context.
Nearly all function returns are assigned to auto variables and these functions have stupid fucking names.
It’s all over the code.
Each time I see it, I need to hunt for the type definition in this large fucking codebase and the original developer doesn’t fucking know either.
Do whatever the fuck you want if you’re the only one who’ll ever touch this code. Otherwise, you need to learn how to develop as part of a group.34 -
Im getting really fatigue with typescript
I spend the extra effort conforming to its compiler which yes the types help much of the time and there is a massive amount of work done before ever having to `run it` to see whats going on.
But its compiler complains about things that are so often out of wack and make little sense or demand some type of hack to ignore out of necessity. And then to top it all off, after all that pre-compilation effort, 9/10 times it results in a runtime error anyways.
Im about beat. I like standard es7, keep the tsconfig, keep the complications.2 -
Well all thanks to JavaScript . The problem of the century was gone i.e missing semicolon . And still I see people put semicolon:true in eslint ... well what's the point of removing it in the first place then .3

In-laws are vacationing in London right now (wife's parents and aunt/uncle), so to keep in touch with the kids, I installed+configured Skype on their phones (these are folks in their 70s, no where close to tech savvy), I think they are good to go.
Last night we try to connect (I 'see' them online)...nothing, so we call.
Me: "Did you see or hear the skype notification?"
Grandma: "Was that you? My phone made a weird sound I never heard before and I saw your picture. I wasn't sure what to do so pressed the red button."
Me: "Its the same sound and picture I showed you before you guys left, remember? That's OK, the kids want to see you and say hi. Hang up and when you hear the sound and see my picture, click the green accept button"
I try again...ring..ring...nothing. About a second later we receive a text "Grandpa hit something and your picture went away. What do I do now?"
So, I try again...ring..ring...they finally pick up (we can only hear them)
Grandma: "Hello...hello? I don't hear or see anything, damn it Fred, what did you hit?"
Grandpa: "Nothing Betty, you aren't holding it right, turn it sideways .."
Wife: "Guys..we can hear you, can you see us?"
Grandpa: "Press this button with the line crossed through it .."
Wife: "Dad.."
Grandpa: "Hey!..See Betty, you had the phone turned wrong. Can you see us?"
Me: "No, you may have hit the video button..it looks like a little video camera, press it."
Grandma: "We did...nothing happened."
Me: "Are you sure? Try it again. The image may be grey or a little darkened, I don't remember."
Then we lose the sound.
Wife: "Oh good Lord they muted us. We're going to have to forget Skype and call them..."
All of a sudden we get video and sound. Cheers all around.
Then I hear in the background..
Uncle: "I thought 'PaperTrail' knew what he was doing? Apparently not."
I heard that and FU you, you old bastard. If you weren't a millionaire and paid for their London trip, I'd take 'knew what he was doing' and shove it up your ass when I see you.1 -

Just make a program that spits out random strings, run it as code and see if it compiles. If not, repeat. That way, just like the apes typewriter thing, you find the most amazing code that is so complicated, nobody would have thought of, but it solves all of humanities problems, especially the power problem you created by running this code 1000000000000000000000 times parallel.9

How do people feel about Webstorm versus VS code? I've been using code a while, it's pretty nice with all the plug-ins. I like the integrated terminal.
Im wondering if Webstorm is better since it has a more targeted development and they're obviously trying to constantly add convenient web dev features? Is it worth the cost? Anybody have any thoughts or used bother before? I'm gonna probably give Webstorm a try tomorrow to see if I like it or not.5 -
When you have to debug a system made by a freelance agency that only had to get it working and not maintain and support it, leaves you with that feeling;
Their stack: https://m.xkcd.com/1636/
Their tool chain: https://m.xkcd.com/1579/
The actual resulting code: https://m.xkcd.com/1185/
And nobody can see why performance is suffering — it's all so simple and beautiful...undefined front end web dev tools stack wars my stack is bigger than yours tooling other people suck -
Me using numpy.polyfit() to fit a function to some data. Blame polyfit for not being accurate, search the web to find any related problems, as the polynom doesn't fit at all. Polynom is of 2nd degree, polyfit becomes unstable at about degree 20?? Try Polynomial.fit() ... same results. How can they all be wrong???See a little typo in my code, calculating the polynom points. Fix it, everything works.... wasted 2 and a half weeks because of this error.🤦🤦

I see people ranting about first going to google.com and then searching. The browsers at my workplace won't let you do a search in the address bar, not even in the search field that says Google.
So now I do the same thing at home and realize how stupid it is milliseconds later.
Not frustrating at all. -
Functional Programming being touted as the silver bullet for all types of modern programming challenges.
Why? As far as I can tell, it doesn't deliver. Sure certain approaches help with specific kinds of problems. Yet, it is cumbersome for general purpose problems and downright harmful for performance critical problems. For doing math problems it is great and I see value. For most else, eh, I have work to do.10 -
I know I am probably late to the facebook drama, but I think taking out of this all is just how genius and evil all those collector companies are.
I would have probably never thought of collecting data off of mechanical turks and quick jobbers, but they did not only think of it, they deployed their system across multiple jobs, scanning more and more data in from all those connected logins, for less than a dollar per profile, which generates atleast 300 profiles on average.
The real question is why is it allowed for a third party app to actually access all that? even if there's a permission for that, why would such exist?
I really can't see why any application would need access to likes, shares, all friends, all their profiles etc. -
Spent an entire week working on XCode configurations for a react-native+swift+objc bridging project. Been failing builds all week. Finally i look over to see the glorious word Succeeded!
Then I realized it was the clean that succeeded, not the build. FFS1 -
Once I was using rsync to copy some large files from a cloud to my local machine. So right after I started it, I went out for some coffee and when I came back it was not done. And to my horror I forgot to use --progress. For people who don't know what it does is , it only shows you how much copying is done. So now after about 45 mins of copying done , I had to stop it start all over again with --progress so that I can see the progress as it completed. 🤔2

Guys at work just found out that they can see all the commits in a repo that they have to change stuff in on a daily basis..
Granted they aren't really the most tech savvy sometimes but they have both been there for like a year...
Made me laugh a bit when one went
"Dude did you know we can search our git for commits? So we can look for who fucked up!?" -
I think mine had to be when I was working with SQL and Lua. I was attempting to store some ints into the database but kept having it fail randomly. It was a 50/50 chance that it would succeed or fail. I tried reading errors (Limited on what I could see) after a while (Almost 3 days, since everything I could think of didn’t have issues and was completely lost) I realized the system another developer setup returned either string or int, thus it causing it to error out when I gave it a string. Once I added a tonumber statement, all my headaches went away.

Each time I try to study someone else’s (cool) JS files, to learn from it, there are always some funky function calls that throw me off. I wish the person could be beside me and just walk me through why they did what they did at each step.
It’s just tough sometimes. I see all these cool projects on GitHub and I go, “let me try to analyse it,” and then I see all these properties too. Sometimes I feel compelled to just check the API but it seems like I’d be going into a blackhole of never-ending API depths.
What are some tips that you JS pros have?2 -
Anyone else notice that the error checking in Visual Studio sucks sometimes? I'll see the error pop up in the editor, read what it's complaining about, double check all the code, think for a minute, get confused about it, comment out some stuff - wait no, it wasn't that, uncomment it....
then save the file and it rescans. Boom, error gone. It was just a phantom error wasting my time.3 -
Marketing material for a RasPi-based device that, supposedly, secures all your traffic from hackers by (translated) "encrypting traffic to your router" and "sharding and dispersing your data, so nobody can read it".
Stay tuned to see what it actually does (waiting for an email reply from it's creator)6 -
!rant, but friendly advice.
I see all those jokes about Android Studio being too heavy, and while I completely agree, want to ask you guys something:
Have you increased the memory it can use in .vmoptions?
Mine lagged as hell, but was using only about 1GB of ram.
After slight change in that file, it finally started working like it should from the beginning.6 -
Co-worker asked for a call and then when I replied "you can call when ready :) " the reply back is an all caps "IN A MIN"
I'm not the one asking for the call and I'm also not rushing you to have one.
To me all caps means shouting and it puzzles me because while typing it the other person can see it and previous that they aren't using all caps. Why continue using all caps if you aren't angry? 🤷
How do you interpret all caps in a work chat conversation?1 -

Guys, check the Decreased Productivity app from chrome store. It helped me to browse Devrant in my work. It removes all the images and colors. You can still see images if you hover over them.
Not like I want to stay in Devrant all day, but it's less distracting -
Wow it's been years since I've been on dev rant. Awesome to see it still going.
I'm a react dev now ... Like all the other JS developers in the world4 -

It didn't change. At all.
Let's call it an emergency but let's not do it, yeah.1 -
Feature request
Could we have some kind of way to see who created the post in the comments? Like an OP mark or a different color of the name or something?
When reading long quality rants I tend not to notice the username, and then when I'd like to engage in the discussion I have to scroll all the way up to check it.2 -
I am unable to see anything useful in current social networks. It all looks like big advertising platforms and I am not interested in looking on ads. This personalization is so shitty that original content is very hard to find. All is so political correct and trendy and what about uniqueness of human individuals. Shitty socialists networks. Hope this website would not be another one.5

W10 remote desktop, what's the best free downloadable without needing to register application out there ?
Trying AnyDesk, but it doesn't cope with window popups well on a machine with dual graphic cards.
As in, it doesn't show them, so I have to walk all the way to the machine to see them in person, which rather defeats the whole remote thing !6 -
OK, I know the general consensus of StackOverflow on DevRant...but jesus h christ...do devs not debug their own shit anymore? I can't say how many times I see "I get this exception...how do I fix...hurrr durrr....". When it all comes down to it, if they just attached a debugger and looked that variables/properties, they'd see what kind of stupid shit they are doing.

Talking about UX design.

One of the things I like about Web Development is its WYSIWYG-ness.
Another thing that I love-hate about it is how 80% (more or less) of the time you don’t see anything happening on screen and then suddenly it all comes together. (This goes mainly for Frontend stuff.)
Aah! The joys and sorrows of Web Development.12 -

Why all of a sudden there is a trend in gaming laptops to have a single big hinge in the middle instead of two on both sides?
Did I miss something? What are the advantages? Or is it just one of those fads that come, get mainstream and then pass?
Can't see much structural benefits with that tbh.
What's the point?13 -
Today on my science test they asked, "There is an animal in a cage, how would you find out if it is a bird or a mammal?"
a. compare it to the characteristics of birds and mammals
b. see if it has a beak
c. look at it's droppings
d. open the cage and see if it flies out
Out of all the questions, d is the most reliable.6 -
I see this term “full stack developer” pop up all the time, does anyone want to explain what it means? A dev who knows all parts of the stack, and a stack is what..?7

How does it feel attending conferences? (Good ones!)
Here in my country we don't have that many good ones they are all just some show offs talking about how they hacked their way through. But when I see videos for big conferences with thousands of people it makes me feel a bit jealous and sad that I can't attend those where you'll get real achievers (~_~)
Why did I have to be born here like this FUCK 3rd world countries.2 -
Why does all source code that I see looks like someone just put new things in the file that was opened in the editor at that very moment instead of thinking about where it really belongs?1

What skills? 😂 Jokes aside, a few situations cause me to question myself, one is reading rants on devRant.
I always start questioning myself when I see others code, it inspires me but sometimes also makes me question my ability.
Last thing that often makes me question myself is reviewing all these requirements for jobs. -
Problem with a product, I'll refer to the manual, its someplace..
FX [ Time Passes . . . ]
I can't seem to find it, though I saw it recently !
No problem, I'll contact the company in question and ask them to email me a copy.. (I did a web search, its nowhere to be found..)
Lets see, all the ways I can contact them, but email..
They sell computer stuff, you'd think email would be like, you know, there..1 -

Like WHY TF? On one hand, I'm having some important work talk, and then I realize that I cannot see my boss's chat anymore and then I have to always look up and see the horrible Drafts section.
Although it is becoming second nature after a million times, I just don't like this feature at all.
IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END?7 -
Stupidly tested some sql on development to return results for an admin (see the whole results) and stupidly didn't test the where clause for generic users (only see a subset of data)
To find out on production the where clause was being run because it wasn't a where, it was an 'and' and 'where' was not being used before so made the whole users get the entire results.
My own fault for not testing all use cases. Horrible though.2 -

I backed this Kickstarter project for a programmable E-ink display called "Displio". The documentation is about 40 lines and is basically just a list of globals without any explanation followed by a link to MomentJS docs. worst of all you have to modify the page with an inspector to see it all.

It seems to me that we all keep posting the same images (normally geeky tech humour) or how programmers are seen by others etc... would it be useful to have an image gallery on devRant so that we can all post into it, lets face it we all love to see them. might stop the same images being posted over and over again .... Would have to be moderated though !

For me, it would be Caddy Server
Discovered it while running some researches around GoLang, where I could see that it was really useful when used with Hugo Framework.
It took me something like 10mn to configure it to run (I couldn't believe only 2 lines would make my things work), and 5 more to make it run with Docker and Traefik (another good open source project that I now use everyday).
Now all my projects where I use Docker have Caddy included o/ -
I was watching some mobile coding stuff and I've discovered Flutter.
I've seen a lot of people hyped for this framework, so I've downloaded a couple apps made with it.
Amazing UI and animations, but everything feels laggy.
Then I've tried it, and I don't see why all this hype. I fell better build mobile app on the "classic" way (Kotlin/xml). Is it me, or Flutter is overrated?7 -
I'm given a simple assignment to update email templates. I tot it would be a breeze.
It turn out SURPRISE! After the updating of template is done. I deploy the code in the development environment.
I tried to access the email template like how the user will see to verify all is good. It turn out i am facing error.
So uhh ok, i went to check the logs to see what the hiccups. It turn out that a table is missing. But this is production code. So my question how the hell did the production environment has the table but dev don't.....6 -
Hoy to all!
I need advice for NNs.
I wanna make a chess engine that uses an NN. (see collabs)
I want the NN to output a probability for each move.
However, i dont know what data to train the NN with.
If i train it with the moves from an engine, it simulates an engine and that sucks.
If i train it from games, i only see one move, and thus, cant train the other moves.
My thougt is, that maybe, i let the NN play an entire game and if it loses, it adjusts itself somehow. But how?
If you wanna contribute, email me :wittmaxi@outlook.de3 -
When I open devRant to see rants. But end up seeing question. That didn't even end with question mark. Plus start with "can we all just..."
I'll find you and burn you and your whole descendants that have your dna in it. Make it extinct and never be remembered as anything in the future. But still someday. 😁1 -
This is kind of a loaded question because it's so broad. So I'll just throw my thoughts down on the idea anyways.
Honestly with all the way that game dev has come it's so sad to see just the increase of people that are so ungrateful and dont appreciate what went into making it. Complaining about small not a big deal bugs that occur, blaming the devs for stuff that's completely not up to them but the "idea man", etc. Although good things are coming out of it. Like children wanting to get into it more which is awesome and indie developers basically holding up the industry while majority of the AAA companies get their shit together. So I see all of that increasing. Also I'm expecting to see the Rust language start to be used in AAA titles replacing C++
Web dev I believe will just get more JavaScript improvement with new libraries, frameworks. I really hope the companies that had PHP5 legacy code get back on their feet quickly. But I hope we can become more accepting of JavaScript doing more than just webdev like Electron, WebGL, etc. Because I think it's great that it can do all that stuff. Is there better options hell yeah but let's let people do crazy shit.
Software dev well I see python making a bigger uprising and I'm hoping people become more accepting of python as well.
These are all just random thoughts so please take that into consideration -
Have you ever felt that an idea hit you like a truck?
I just had that and my brain went in full analysis mode to see if the idea would hold up under all circumstances. I think it might! But for a good 5 minutes I couldn't think of anything else.
Weird how brains and thoughts sometimes work.8 -
Facebook. YouTube.
I went to foreign country for study around the time those websites were introduced to public and became popular among students. It was a cool place to be. Totally different from now.
Now everything and everywhere I look, all I see is people doing businesses instead of doing fun things. -
I come to check in to the office during my vacation to see how the project is going. I find a colleague from a vendor explaining it all to business and pushing over CSS changes to the next release. Current release is MVP1 and is set to release 3 months for now. *facepalm*2

I see a lot of hatred for Python all over the place, so I have to ask: Why? What do people hate so much about Python? It's fantastic for my use-case (interacting with and managing AWS resources), so is it just a case of "good for this one thing, bad for everything else," or something different?25

What are the best practices when making a blogging website?
I'm creating an addition to my personal website to include a blog, and want to follow the best practices for it. Do I just save everything in a JSON? Or do I just make every entry a "page" in Gatsby/React? What have you all done? Would love to see some examples.4 -

Went to see the Disaster Artist - it was absolutely magnificent. James Franco was so good as Tommy Wiseau that his bare scene was actually nausea inducing.

Because you maintain a WooCommerce payment gateway plugin, a user contacts you to ask if it can do something that seriously extends the basic checkout functionality.
An e-mail conversation ensues to clarify the nature of the request and see if it is even remotely in scope for the plugin (it isn't).
Final e-mail from the user ends with, "It really isn't all that hard. I think you can probably knock it out in a day or two. ;)" -

Omg my mentor is so toxic... Because it took us to long to program an app. He made a "mobile" version himself. Like we have to use a technology we never used before and certain things like login take way to long he says... I bet if he had to create it he would also have to take a long time to... Whatever I don't care, he got his own app. I see it now all as a learning experience...1
-
I hate when you've poured all sorts of blood/sweat/tears/money into an app for a client and worked out all of the bugs they've complained about, only to see them throw their hands in the air saying "I don't know how to sell a mobile app, but since it didn't sell a billion downloads on day one it's a failure". Made more frustrating given that the app is a huge success to the people we've shown it to and selling it is stupid simple for someone with an inkling of sales experience.1

Make an Async task (Java) and...
DONT use a loop to iterate though a time series collection. Don't linear search that shit.
DO use a queue and pop() it like its hot. Check that shit to see when it needs to be used instead of searching.
DO assert that your time series data is in order (Predication mother fucker).
DO throw an exception that you data is all fucked when it's all fuck up.
Stay sexy and use a fucking queue man.5 -
I created a custom interface for an LMS that allows students to see their marks even if they haven't been 'shared' yet by their teachers. This is all done without accessing any unauthorized apis, as the LMS always returns all student marks and then hides the ones with a False 'shared' key. School administration caught me, so I've now shut it down. I have a meeting with the deans tomorrow. Any advice? (Again, this is all done using existing methods found within this LMS)5

So I'd like to see some opinions on different editors and IDEs.

Anyone know of tutorials which use...unconventional project premises? Usually you see To-do apps, sample blogs, and other such generic offerings. Not that those are bad, but I'm interested in finding more outlandish, unconventional examples. Like, say, developing a mock GUI for a spacefaring vessel.
I'm personally interested in examples pertaining to React, VueJS, and Laravel, but if it fits the outlandish and unusual criteria I'd love to see it all the same!3 -
Does Google's phone backup thing obey .nomedia or backup the SD card? It's useful to me just due to the /data backup, but I don't want it uploading and categorizing my porn folder for all to see.3

I really do not understand why people do not use the defaults, I see a PHP code and I see all the PSR's violated, SOLID violated, and as it is something of years, unfortunately we did not get more rapporteur in a timely manner. I didn't go to college, but I must say, what the hell do you guys do in college?
Then many (the good obviously) programmers do not understand why they take so much the fun of PHP, if they see the codes that I see lately...2 -
If the world was a LPL video, I would be the curious adolescent and you would be the gun safe that can be opened with a spoon — you can’t stop me.
In any case, that’s all I have for you today. If you like the video and would like to see more like it, please subscribe, and as always, have a nice day. -
iOS/native app devs!
How usual it is for your apps to differ from iOS UI guidelines? Our lead dev always throws a fit when he has to implement custom stuff, but I see popular games “shit all over” these guidelines all the time and do very well in popularity.
As I’m no expert, please tell me if it is generally accepted to not follow these iOS rules / use premade controls 100% of the time, so I know what’s up. Thank you.2 -
my old 2011 MacBook with all my childhood memories (i had it when i was 8, im 14 now) just died, can't access the hard drive and it has like 80 bad sectors, running Kali off a USB stick to see if i can salvage any data but i have to install apfs-linux to read apple's file system. currently stuck on installing clang for like 15 minutes3

At starting of my professional career I was part of an android project for a big credit card company. I used love the UI and colors in it. With all the tablets and phones around, people used to see me like a geek 😀
But UI guidelines and UX of that project, never got such extensive guidelines again. It used to make the development so easy. -
Spent ages building docker containers for all our projects. All worked great and I released it. So someone added a new dependency that required an Ubuntu package to be installed but forgot to tell me. My colleague said "docker isn't very stable is it" when it didn't run due to said dependency. It's a Linux container ffs, see if you blame Virtualbox under the same circumstances you idiot

First time using ACF pro for WordPress and client told me he wants to put markers on a single map. I then made a repeater field that requires the use to enter longitude and latitude and then loop through it to display all the markers. I'm stupid enough to not see the Google Maps field for ACF pro.
I should read more often. -
Fuck focused inbox on outlook. Who thought it was a good idea? Why dose every company think they should put algorithms on everything to decide what we want to see? I want all my emails not just want outlook thinks I want to see.... Im glad I switched to Thunderbird and only have to deal with it when my colleagues emails go "missing"5

I learned that I could use javascript to manipulate parts of Windows 98SE and decided I really like this shit and started buying programming and web design books.
I was only doing it for fun and didn't see it as a career path and moved on to lame things. Now, years later, I'm kicking myself for thinking like that and having to learn all of the new shit I didn't keep up with and actually trying to make it a career. -
I'm tired and stressed and it's friday
all my work is done that is required for monday, i should do testing and code cleanup, but i'm burned out so instead i'm gonna play with grafana and see what I can do with it, seems cool and something more interesting to do than code cleanup and wanting to cry2 -
It’s 3am. Now in my head I see the TV ad of some kind of flu medicine that has the “Sardisj – that’s all we have” as its slogan and a happy smiling family in it. Wtf does this even mean, how am I supposed to design architecture with this kind of brain I have1

For every one that thinks that if you use try/catch on everything make your code all errors desapiring you are living a lie!! They still exist now if the users see or not it depends on what you put inside the catch

So I'm using a using statement to utilize a streamwriter in C#. I'm missing a parenthesis but Visual Studio doesn't highlight that.
Nope.
Instead it highlights "Console.WriteLine" and claims it "doesn't exist in this context."
So I'm scratching my head, trying to see what's wrong, checking the target framework (net framework 4.6.1) and I've got "using System;" and I'm going through stack overflow problems.
All because Visual Studio decided to underline console.writeline, rather than the METHOD WITH THE MISSING PARENTHESIS.4 -

Thank God for Authy app!
Lost phone and was able to get all my 2FA accounts linked up in seconds.
That would have been a logistical nightmare given that all my account are 2fa.
I can see it now
Enter username: xyz
Enter password: abc
Enter 2fa code: dangit
Lost or recover account
Enter phone number: dangit -

Why do i see so many learnt with a t? Are all past tense verbs changing or just the one that is supposed to indicate learnedness, knowledge, intelligence, achivement?
Am i taking this too seriously? BECAUSE I ALMOST ALWAYS SEE CODERS DOING THIS LEARNT CRAP. STOP. YOU LOOK DUMB.
Or is it just me? Too uptight? Bc to me, learnt is a syntax error. And is not even a fucking t sound it's a d. Big fat d.7 -
I just love when all my code is perfect and clean... then I compile it to see my changes... and everything is fucking broken.. so I think "okay, let me see if I missed something or forgot a space or something stupid."... nope not that *recompiles* nothing is showing up.
"That's cool too, who needs a working website anyways." -
This place has fucking ducks everywhere. Duck is the new Cat here.
Why? What the fuck! If we want cuteness we should have images of http://rethinkrobotics.com/intera/ here. This cuteness will take over the world one day.
Probably, that's why! We'd all be sitting ducks. That's what this duck trend is signifying. Ah! I might see it now.
But, still! Fuck you duck 🦆!2 -
I learned to program in community college where they had us learn C# but I honestly didn't catch the programming bug until we had to do assembly language. I just found it fun to break what I needed to do into 's,mall steps and at the end I get to see the result of all that Work!

Was asked to look at another teams repo to see how they use Cassandra. In that repo, I found a function that creates a map[int]bool populated with a handful of numbers all with true as the value. The function then checks the existence of an int in that map and return a true if it exists.
