New for avatars - emotions! You can now change your facial expression on your avatar to better capture your dev mood! Getting expressions working right turned out to be quite the undertaking due to the ripple effect of the various layers that each expression touched so our total layers just for men ballooned out from 300 layers to 1100. And @dfox re-architecting how layers work to handle the interconnectedness of expression meant tying together facial expression, skin tone, facial hair, and hair color to make sure everything stays in sync. It’s a fun new addition, I hope everyone enjoys!
I also want to apologize for the delay in getting this out, I meant to have this done ages ago but I got thrown a curveball at work and was laid off back in April and have been super stressed running around trying to find a new job for the past 3 months. I figured I’d have more free time to work on devRant, but hunting for work is so exhausting, it’s really taken its toll emotionally and financially (no unemployment benefits because according to my state even though we lose money every month “you’re still a corporate officer”). Things are finally looking promising on the job search front, and I expect once things get back to normal @dfox and I can get our release velocity back up, but until then, please bear with me.
P.S. If you have the resources, we certainly do appreciate your support with devRant++ Your monthly contributions really do make a difference! Thanks all!44 -

That "in the zone" moment 😆33 -
How it usually goes:
1. Have an idea
2. Do about 3 of those things:
- sketch out a few diagramms of how it would work
- think of a name and buy the url
- estimate what you would have to buy and what it would cost
- make a project folder
- lean back, imagine life after the idea made you rich and famous
- write about 2% of the required code
3. Get distracted or don't have time to work on thr idea
4. Have new idea, repeat from 122 -
Me: Hey, my laptop (with stickers on it) is in for repair, can't get any work done.
Friend: Oh, that sucks, we going to be delayed launching our app!
... few days later ...
Friend: Hey, did u get it back yet?
Me: They ended up giving me a brand new one cause they couldn't repair it.
Friend: That's awesome man, you got lucky!
Me: F*@$ that, I LOST MY STICKERS!7 -

I have this one major pet peeve - getting interrupted on any messenger by "hey".
Q: Hey
A: Hey, what's up?
-minutes pass, I try to resume work-
Q: Do you have a second?
A: Sure, what's up?
-minutes pass, I try to resume work... Again-
Q: Do you know anything about #feature#?
A: Yeah, I wrote most of it, what do you need?
-minutes pass, I try to resume work... AGAIN-
(goes on same pattern, takes half an hour for a 10 second question/answer)
Like... Come on!!! Don't do this to me
I get it, I like to be cordial and friendly - but there is absolutely nothing stopping you from getting your message across without making me have to go back and forth (interrupting my work).9 -
Warning: This is going to be a long one!
Day 1: Fresh outta grad school. Joined a start-up in silicon valley (50% lower pay than avg salary) . Moved to the bay area and rented a car to travel to work. First day, all excited, drive 35 miles to work.
It's a small company with just 5 people. Greeted by the CEO himself. Asks me to wait outside while he goes speaks with the project manager. In the meantime the office manager asks if I have a copy of my resume.
10 minutes later, the CEO walks out and tell me: "I'm sorry but I don't have a job for you at this time. Please come back after a month". Palms are sweaty, Knees weak, arms are heavy. I feel my heart skipping several beats. As an F1 student I immediately start thinking about my visa status.
I drive back home and try to think what I should do next. Then suddenly the CEO calls me back saying pls come back and we can work something out. I drive back and I'm offered a small spot on a round table with my colleagues. Everyone looks stressed out and sad.
Day 2: Work starts early since we need to collaborate with a team in India. I reach work at 6:00 am hoping my second day is better than the first. Couple minutes into the early morning meeting, the CEO flips out and screams: "I'm going to fucking fire everyone. This fucking thing is taking too long. Just get the fuck out already".
Day 547: I finally quit and joined another start-up :)10 -
My work started working on an adult goods site and every once in a while I hear phrases like "Wait, go back to anal", " Can I take a look at sex toys", etc. We're all pretty professional about it, but I still get caught off guard when I hear those convos haha.2

A few years back, there was a super repetitive task I needed to do to create a bunch of new screens for a new feature.
The task was so repetitive that I just couldn't bring myself to do it, and was avoiding it as long as possible.
Finally the day came where I needed to get it done. I sat at the computer readying myself to finally start/finish the task.
As I was going through the files, I could see all the work had already been done..? Confused, I opened up git history, and saw that I had checked the files in a few nights back.
Best I could do was trace it back to a house party where I was the last to go to sleep.
That was the day that I realised the power of auto-pilot :)1 -
Our coffee machine at work is broken. We're a fucking high tech company delivering unique solutions with millions of requests every second of the day to over 60 countries, how can we not have a working fucking COFFEE MACHINE in the kitchen? How are we suppose to keep the lights on if we can't get our daily coffee god damnit?! It's been broken for over a week.
Sure, I'll just walk to the floor upstairs to get coffee LIKE THEY DID IN THE EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS. Maybe I should just come in to work on a horse with armor stabbing some funny looking fucker because it seems like we're living in the GOD DAMN EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS and that was a totally legit action back then. Get your shit together, call the company providing the coffee machine service and just have them fix it. How hard can it be??12 -
Was struggling with depression and stress for an extended period. So, naturally, I had more sickdays than average.
However, I was still managing to overperform on my goals, so when it came time to discuss salary I was hopeful.
Didn't get a raise, not even a pat on the back. My manager told me he couldn't justify giving me the raise I had earned simply because I had had too many sick days. So my actual performance didn't count. Everybody else got raises though.
On a previous occasion he told me that I had to 'Learn what it means to have a job' and get my priorities straight. I told him I already had very little social life so I could spend what little energy I had on work. I tried to explain to him how depression works and he assured me he understood.
Yeah, right. My colleague with back problems, who suddenly couldn't walk, didn't get that treatment.
Depression is real. I'm so glad they ended up firing me so I could work for a place that cares.8 -
Finally got a 200 response back from the server! Woo!
I've spent two days trying to get this to work (see my earlier rant). but yay! finally working!
So I log the response body just to revel in its lovely glow.... only to notice an error message saying "INVALID_INPUT".
WHAT THE CRAP.
200 FOR AN ERROR RESPONSE?
COME ON.4 -
If you're stuck....take a break away from the keyboard. Go outside and take a couple of deep breaths. Talk to someone about something not work related. Then get back in and look at the problem with fresh eyes.3

I have a huge problem.
I fell in love with a girl and I can't concentrate enough to code. I sit at my PC, open editor and start, but from time to time I find myself staring blindly into a screen realizing i lost some time thinking of her. Then I get back to work, but I start to write nonsense out of confusion. Today ive been trying to code from 10 am til 4 pm, but nothing. Ive literally done nothing today. Just lost time...25 -
This was my day at work today
-Be me at work
-Use git terminal on WORK PROVIDED MacBook
-Decide to clone into a repo into another repo as it was one project inside another project
-Makes changes to code
-Attempts to add .
- warning: adding embedded git repo ...
-Apparently needs submodules
-Shit doesn't get added
-During this get asked to create 2 new branches and modify some code
-Do that specifying files to add as add . breaks everything
-Has 3 branches now detached from master
-Super confused where anything is and what's going on
-Go back to branch for other repo to get added to
-Spends 30 minutes trying to understand submodules
-Gives up and deletes folder moving it elsewhere
-Commits begin failing everywhere. Super confused.
-Get everything figured out and commiting
-Goto merge all branches to master
-Merge conflict with .DS_Store
-FML
I think I'm done guys12 -
At work:
"I do not get your concerns over ssl, it works fine when we use ie"
"What do you mean by xss? A regular use would not even try ans attempt something like that"
"We need to keep the txt file with the passwords there, its an internal project, the public would not even attempt to reach our site, just put them back"
Ah the many stories that I have from this place. It is an otherwise good place to work at tho, but oh well...
Me on a daily basis tho9 -
Work has been very stressful lately...
But after one week of vacation (and two in front of me) I am ready to get back to my side-projects again...
coffee: checked
music: checked
Lets GO! This feels so good! I am glad to be back ;-)19 -
Multiple friens asked if I could help someone with her "laptop".
Me: so I hear that you have problems with your laptop?
She: oh yea let me get my laptop.
A minute later she comes back with an iPad mini.
She: I cant get this app to work!
How can they all call that a laptop! *facepalm*9 -
Enough is enough!!!
I just received an email from HR because "Your not supposed to work that much as a trainee! Your should study at home"
WELL THANK YOU, BUT DID IT EVER COME TO YOUR MIND THAT I MIGHT ACTUALLY BE WORKING?!
I just wrote back that I have tons of stuff to do, and that they can talk to my boss if they want me to work less.
So to sum up:
I solve problems and get screamed at by HR in return?
IT FUCKING GREAT10 -
Ok I have 2 more hours to work today. I bet I will get these 3 important things done.
*important email comes in*
*laptop runs out of batery*
*client finally calls back after 4 weeks*
*data structure has to be reorganized urgently due to new requirements*
After dealing with all of that, I close all windows in order to go home. The last window is the thing I wanted to do in the first place.1 -
My day.
6 am: 2yo woke up
8:30 am: start work (from home)
11 am: go get breakfast/lunch
11:30 am: work call. while driving. Learn nothing new.
12:00 noon: infuriatingly slow errand
12:30 pm: work call. Learn nothing new.
1 pm: finally get to eat. It's cold. And terrible.
6 pm: 2yo finally goes to sleep (missed nap)
9:20 pm: 2yo wakes up screaming.
9:30 pm: find 3 or 4 tablespoons of leftover tuna in the fridge. No bread.
10:45 pm: I finally finish my work (super-urgent friday-morning release of a next-Wednesday-morning deadline... Yeah idfk.)
11:29 pm: 2yo stops yelling and screaming and goes back to sleep
11:39 pm: finish writing this while in bed.
11:40 pm: Sleep?10 -
Me: I have been doing really similar tasks I'm going to spend some time making a template for it.
Supervisor: ok just don't spend to much time on it we have a lot to do.
Me: shouldn't take too long
1 hour later.
Supervisor : how's the work going.
Me: almost done with the template.
Supervisor: this is taking you way to long I need you to just get back to work.
Me: ok
He leaves and I continue work on the template.
30 mins later.
Show him the template.
Me: I cut my time on this specific task by 80%
Supervisor: good job glad I knew you should do it.
WTF YOU WERE TELLING ME NOT TO.5 -
Boss: Hey funny guy, It's your First Work anniversary. Congratulations and now share your thought on completing a year with us.
Me: Thanks Lady, All I wanted to say is Life was good and then I joined this project.
Boss: Told you, Funny guy. Now get back to work and I want those fixes by EOD.
Me: 😑4 -
HO. LY. SHIT.
So this gig I got myself into, they have a whitelist of IP addresses that are allowed to access their web server. It's work-at-home. We just got a new internet provider, and it looks like I get a different public IP address everytime I disconnect and connect to the WIFI. And since it looks like the way they work on their codebase is that you either edit the files right on the server or you download the files that you need to work on, make the changes, and then re-upload the file back to the server and refresh the website to see the changes, now I can't access the server because I get different IP addresses. And it's highly inconvenient to keep emailing them to add IP addresses to the whitelist.
No source control, just straight-up download/upload from/to the server. Like, srsly. So that also means debugging is extremely hard for me because one, they use ColdFusion and I've never used that shit before and two, how the hell do you debug with this style of work?
I just started this last Tuesday, and I already want to call it quits. This is just a pain in the ass and not worth my time. I'll be glad to just go back to driving Lyft/Uber to make money while I look for a full-time, PROPER job.
By the way, can I do that to a contracting job? Just call it quits when you haven't even finished your first task? How does this work?17 -
Manager: I NEVER SAID THAT!!
Dev: *Brings up email where he said exactly that*
Manager: I DON’T REMEMBER ASSIGNING YOU A TICKET TO LOOK THAT UP. GET BACK TO WORK!!
Dev: …3 -
Yesterday I had my performance review discussion with my manager after about 6 months into the job, which is my first dev job. Before this, I had spent about 2 years in a support role after graduation, but always yearned to build something cool and be a full time developer. Hence I had made the lunge in spite of a pay cut into a development role.
For the past 6 months I was asked to develop a bunch of features on top of legacy code which is ~15 years old. I did my best and brought in the best ideas and practices onto the table and delivered on time. The features turned out great. I enjoyed working with the team and the team loved me back!
But at the back of my mind, I was hoping that I would get to work on something new and relevant. To quench this thirst, I used to spend my personal time on side projects.
The managers and the leads who have been observing me all along, told me yesterday that my manager got AMAZINGLY positive feedback from the leads and my teammates (who are like 10 years senior to me). Going forward, I get to work on any CRAZY idea and pick up any technology I like with the goal of revamping our product. Essentially I get to work on my side projects full time as long as it adds value to the company.
Ohhhhhh YEAH!
Wish me luck. 😎1 -
Wasted whole day installing Ubuntu and get it to work on my laptop 😥
Now going back on Windows...36 -
I started at a new company. I met tons of people the first day. Third day on the job a guy comes up to me and says hello. I’m like, “Hey. What’s up. Thanks for welcoming me look forward to working with you and etc. I’m still learning names. Se ya round. I should get back to work.” Totally like I would greet the janitor or anyone else.
He leaves and people tell me that he was the CEO. I kill myself laughing.6 -
Lost two machines with 10years+ of my work and files to the police after a raid some years ago...
They were used in a "crime" cuz I was chatting with my hemp supplier on one of the machines...no chance to get them back...
Oh man, I miss my data...18 -
Leave work with two working monitors at my desk, come back the next day to one monitor and a missing HDMI cable. Find out marketing took it for a presentation, don't get it back for three weeks. Finally get it back for a day, become super happy to finally have both monitors again. Come back the next day and PM has stolen my HDMI again, no extra HDMI cables in entire office. Apparently HDMI cables are valued like gold around these parts.10

It's raining in Chennai, India.
Flooding in quite a few areas.
The areas hit bad are where the IT companies have set up shop. More rain is expected .
If you know guys from here please check and see if they're OK. It was almost impossible to get back home from work for many people last night.
Uber was charging 600% more for a ride.
Hope you guys from Chennai are safe.8 -
PO: Here's a small cool feature I thought of, should be easy enough *shows very basic draft spec*
Me: Cool, how does it work for logged out users? What about customers in Spain? Does it work with US sales tax? Do we need to update the privacy policy? Do we have translations? What's the fallback if it breaks? Who will be maintaining the content?
PO: ...
PO: I'll get back to you
*never hears about feature again*4 -
When you learn your project will be launched Monday in an email sent to the whole company, just before the weekend...
I'm not even kidding. No one on our team was consulted if the app was ready or not.
There was no infrastructure in place to even deploy the app. Everything had to be done in a hurry over the weekend to deploy something half baked, thanks to that idiot project manager who told his boss everything was ready.
Two colleagues ended up doing this work over the weekend, but looking back, if I was the one having to get something deployed over the weekend, I would have just refused and come back to work as usual on Monday and watch that idiot explain why it's not live. -
I am on holidays and because of devRant I found out about gitLab...
I am sweating and in panic but no one from work called me yet.
Then I realised, this is my first vacation without laptop and work phone in years.
I think I will get back to work 10 days from now and it will like: "Hey!! Can you sit and fix this? We've been waiting for 2 weeks"...
FUUUUUUU!!4 -
Sister: *walks up to me at my desk* Hey, I was wondering if you can undo what you did to the internet and put it back and make it work better in my room and also make it faster
Me: Sure
Yeah, I’ll get right on it and go hit the fucking magic button in the router settings called “enable extended range and make it go faster”.1 -
Work: there is little work for our freelancer we're getting rid of him at the end of the year
Me: are you sure, that will put a lot of work on my schedule.
Work: I'm sure you can handle it
*two weeks later*
Work: have you finished feature xyz yet
Me: nope had a server crash today so pushed it back
Work: why didn't you get "free lancers name here" to do it for you
Me: I could of if you didn't fire him, he could of also done the other features you want too
Work: ah ok1 -
Friend : I will do this when I get back from work.
Me : But you are working from home, aren't you?
Friend : Yes, but I am at work, right now.
Me: And how does your route back home look like?
Friend : I switch input source from my work's laptop to gaming rig.6 -
I've been using dark mode on google docs mobile (changing the page color to black and text to grey) for two months now that going back to default looks weird.
I was starting a new manuscript and could hardly work on it because of how weird it looks. I guess I shouldn't have done that in the first place, because now I can't get used to the default anymore.1 -
Greatest thing just happened.
Get a ticket about orders not being processed in our webshop. Angry customer. Critical!!!!
Starts troubleshooting. Nothing has changed in the code recently, was working just fine yesterday. Works locally and on test server. Hmmm...
Take a chance. Writes back to customer: “there! Try to place an order again” without changing anything.
5 minutes I get back “awesome! Everything works again and all previous orders have appeared. Good work!”.
Happy customer. Happy dev :)

You guys should really take a look at your YouTube history sometimes (If you use it). It's amazing how I move from one video to another.
Here is what I did yesterday:
- I watched a GOT Season 7 review
- Then for some reason, I watched Underground nuclear test
- Several HD footages of Nuclear tests
- Top 10 Demolitions gone wrong 😕
- "No Planes" in 9/11 attack 😕
- Amber Heard's Sexy Prank 😕
Fucking hell, I need to get back to work ☹️17 -
When you get to 12pm (lunch time) and you've already been in 7 back to back meetings and no longer know what you were going to actually attempt to do today.
Listen kids, don't become the senior dev, you'll never work an hour in your day again!
#iJustWantToFuckingCodeToday!6 -
Lots of stress and strain the last months private and at work.
Headache all the days and no time to get back to my self. Programming starts to get tedious.
Now changing my life completely.
Broke up with my girlfriend and started looking for a new work - finally got a new contract today.
Dismissal coming on Monday.
3 months to go to get a enjoyable life.
PS: lurking some months and finally created an account. Thanks for all the rants which let me smile!3 -
Buy a fitness tracker which reminds you after an hour of inactivity to get up.
Get up, walk around or even better climb some stairs, get back to work.3 -
Be me, miss specifying the item in an array so a drop-down doesn't work, get fired from the project and moved to a much lesser project.
Be the other guy, fuck up the app so bad you have to roll back 3 weeks worth of work...no big deal...1 -
> starts coding at a young age
> makes it my whole personality
> goes through a rough year of quarantine, graduates high school, changes changes changes
* no. coding for a super extended period of time*
now I'm slowly trying to get back into it consistently. miss you besties lol hope yall are doing ok I'm back and I'm better and also older. I think the last time I was consistently on here I was 17 lmao
I work at another bank now. I finished my first year of engineering at my uni. Ontario is slowly opening up. I'm doing better :)3 -
Forgot to push to stable branch before I left from work. Nightly build takes 5 hours so I needed to do that in order to get nightly in the morning. As I'm moving I have only cellphone with 16k internet at home. Sounded like I'm screwed. But luckily fetching few new commits and pushing them back to correct branch git managed even over this parody of internet connection. Love git, I'm saved. Whole repo has few hundred megs, if I had to download everything it would be faster to wait to get real internet connection in few days.1

Me doing front-end work and get a stupid feature request from a customer...."I'll have to talk to our back-end developer and DBA to see if those changes are possible".
Guess what...Im the back-end developer and DBA and the answer is "hell no".2 -
Loving rantBlock 🙂
I just re-enabled it to show a friend... I really do some of my best work at 2am 😂
FYI:
This collab is still (to the best of my knowledge) the most popular collab on devRant. I ranted a while back that it's open to anyone who wants to get involved to work on production version to publish to mozilla, google etc. Personally I would love to build the rant replacement functionality into a fork of uBlock but I simply don't have the time at the moment - so if your looking for a side project...
Collab LInk: https://devrant.com/collabs/...3 -
Brain; "Ok you should get back into programming to take your mind of things at the moment, start work on that big project you wanted to start!"
Me: "Ok let's rebuild that asset I made last year that no body purchased or cared about!"
Brain: *Audible sigh*8 -
Manager: "Hi Almond, how is X going?"
Almond: "...I don't know, Bob is in charge of that."
Manager: "Ok. Do you know the status of Y at all?"
Almond: "Not sure, isn't that Bob's responsibility too?"
Manager: "Well, yeah, but I never seem to be able to get a good answer out of him. Find out on both fronts and let me know ASAP please"
...sure, I know how this goes. I'll stop all the dev work I'm doing, do your job for you, talk to the lazy bonehead that never bothers doing anything, report back that he's done sod all (or still "in a requirements gathering phase" as he puts it), be asked "why is he taking so long", have a bit more back and forth, then decide we'll just leave him be as actually trying to get him to do any work is going to be too much like hassle 😒6 -
My old phone is dead forever but I'm back :-D
AND I JUST GOT AN INTERNSHIP :-DDDD I GET TO PROGRAM IN AN ACTUAL WORK ENVIRONMENT LIKE A BIG KID
AND KINDA GETTING A HOUSE THIS SUMMER I THINK?! (I have to share with my sister and her boyfriend but that means I get to cook without people interfering MOM JUST LET ME MAKE FRENCH TOAST JEEZ)
(and I'm probably like 99.9% getting kicked out of school but everything is going to be fine I hope :-s )
BUT I MIGHT GO TO *COMMUNITY COLLEGE* SOMEDAY SO EVERYTHING IS FINE :-D15 -
I feel like I'm in an abusive relationship with Ubuntu.
I love it but whenever I'm with it it screws up my environment and doesn't work when I need it to.
I go back to Windows reluctantly and get everything set up and stable. I'm happy, but not excited about it. And then, within a few months, I get that thought. Maybe if I put enough work in I can make Ubuntu work for me as my main environment.24 -
devRant should place an explicit notice upon registration:
"devRant cannot be held responsible for proctrastination when you have pressing deadlines :D"
and every 20 minutes a popup saying "get back to work! it's been a while"1 -
I began my first Linux / i3 install 7 days ago when I posted my first rant... And today I'm declaring it officially *done*! (Mostly because if I don't, I'll spend another week configuring the damn thing.)
Here it is. Few minor things to edit/fix (like the fact that it sometimes randomly logs me out after coming back from hibernation... Yeah, "minor") but the functionality is mostly there. I can ("should") get back to work!16 -
My day.
07.25 early ringing of phone.
I'm usually dead asleep till 9 o clock.
Went to bed at 01 o clock.
Something crushed at work, needed to be fixed ASAP.
No coffee. Tired. Stinking peace of garbage
08.45 o clock - super market delivery came earlier than expected, while la me was still trying to communicate necessary steps to resolve the issue.
Forgot to pre pay online.
Still had no coffee, still a piece of stinking shit, still tired.
Took me nearly 20 mins to get my PIN right.
Poor delivery guy had unpleasant call from chef, I needed to deescalate.
Back to work, people angry for me being 20 mins away in midst of chaos.
Me back to fixing stuff.
Done at 09.30.
One of these days where everything you touch becomes a large pile of poop and no matter what you do it's wrong.
Yep. The rest of the day went pretty much as bonkers as it started.
At least no work on weekend.
Yay.1 -
First day back. I am a junior Dev a year and a half of work.
I get in after Christmas break and find people standing around my desk turns out all senior staff (except CEO and PM who are both non-technical ) are away and an email. Basically saying it's up to me for the next week to manage people.
FU&£&# what the heck I don't have a clue what I am doing and I can't mange if I could I would be a manager pays better. So I designate to people took me an hour to figure out what people can actually get on with. Then PM wants a break down of the plan. Then meeting with CEO over the importance of these projects and told 'politely' shortest deadline to date most work, get it done the company depends on these projects if you don't well it would be the end of you.
Get back to my desk people need work I should be getting on with to do theirs but I have been busy in silly meetings and litrually every 5 mins get nagged 'have I done it yet'. But as I am about done they discover what they should have been working on is doable without my work. I don't shake but at one point today I was shaking so much with nerves I couldn't type. Had a very short lunch and stayed on late sorting people problems out. (Thankfully the even more junior people are nice and 1 did help me at one point today I'm so great full for the help)
I'm a junior no training in the technologies I work with not even before starting the job. £3 million+ worth of projects and possible future client resting on my shoulders... (Thankfully the real project lead and senior members are back next week although won't be long left till deadline) Wtf ...
Anyone got a job going I want out!5 -
When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4
-
Recently applied at a local company. Webform, "enter some details and we'll get back to you"-like.
Entered my details, hit submit, lo and behold "Error 503 - something went wrong on our end".
I was just baffled. It's a well-established IT company and they can't even get their application form to work?
So I'm sitting there in the debugger console, monitoring network stuff to see if anything is weird. I obviously hit submit some several more times during that.
Eventually I give up.
In the night my phone wakes me up with a shitton of "we've received your application and will review it..." emails.
Yeah they didn't get back to me.2 -
How useful was my CS Degree?
I don't have one. I went $50k in debt trying to get one, but after shuffling schools and trying to make it work around a full time job...I took a break.
I've been a professional developer for 4+ years and worked in IT for over a decade.
I'm not sure if it's worth going back, but it sucks to have all that debt and nothing tangible to show for it.5 -
I was called back into work last night at 4 a.m.
(L)user - *anony* I’m sorry to wake you but I’m needing on the internet and I can’t get out.
**Just installed a new firewall and I haven’t had time to get a trusted cert pushed through**
Me - alright I’ll be there in a second.
After rolling my sweet ass out of bed and getting here, I get her through and leave. When I get back to my house I realize I’d forgot my fucking keys... I come back and the bitch has her computer shut down reading a book and isn’t even using the internet...
Me - I thought you needed on the internet, whys your computer shut down...?
Her - Oh, I don’t need it right now, I was just having trouble getting on is all.
FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING FUCK! This is the SAME fucking (l)user that somehow managed to get the fucking toner stuck backwards in a printer. It’s the same girl that has called me in the past at late hours and requested that I move a chair from one patient room to the other. A fucking chair. I’m not in the maintenance department... so first, you’re calling the wrong department and second; the time it took you to call me you yourself could have fucking done it. She didn’t like the way that call ended.
Although partially my fault, if I would have finished everything I wouldn’t have had to get up but shit... this fuck still deserves a chair to the fucking face.3 -
Started off a developer 6 months back. I seem to have lost control of my life. I wake up at 8, be at work at 9am, get back home by 7 or 8pm, dinner, learn, work on my platform, sleep at 12am or 1am and the cycle continues.
I have no time for taking care of myself, no working out, no grooming, no family time, no time with friends, nothing naada! It scares me that I don't have that balance.
I always feel like I'm not good enough and I'm curious by nature, because of these, I sit my ass down and work / learn like crazy because I want to be good but I fear for my health, I'm 22, so I can live for now like this but this lifestyle will ruin my future, I've started getting back problems and shit, that was the wake up call!
How do you guys do it? work - life balance? I believe this information is vital for everyone starting out as a developer.5 -
After many years... I truly believe that non IT people belive that this is how programmers work:
- Goodmorning computer. How are you? Can you make me a program? I want the program to include an userfriendly userinterface, database, optimized code, documentation and dont forget that i dont want any bugs! Thanks computer. I'll get back to you when my coffee is ready.3 -
Soooo it's Monday........ 🤯
@C0D4 started the day fixing current projects defects (4 tickets smashed before coffee 💪)
Then after coffee, run a test coverage report and see a significant decline over the past few months, so spends a couple hours adding more tests to get some areas filled in - meh, nothing like 50+ lines per test... to test a if() statement but whatever - complex scenarios will be complex to get too, but no my tests break and I'm missing data I didn't know about🤦♂️
So let's comment all that out, and go to lunch ... mmmm lunch.
Get back, start working on those again, and then get handed a new issue, so comment that all back out again, ( ok I know what you're thinking, but I'm working in an environment that does not use git for deployments - don't ask, real pain in the ass I haven't had time to invest into yet - but as code versioning only) anywho, starts to workout this new issue but don't figure it out, enter a 30 minute meeting.................. yea that was 2 hours later but was a very practical whiteboard session only to work out I have something like 16-20 weeks of work over 4-5 projects to get out in like 6 weeks... hahahahahahaha fml..... oh and that's excluding another project which had a 6 weeks of work in the pipeline to get to somehow.... I'm not seeing this one happening, and probably conflicting projects needed on top of that down the track... but we'll leave those out for now!
Whoot is fucking home time!!!
🤷♂️I'm starting to think I'm like a team of 5-10 devs right now, maybe I should start asking for 5-10x more 😏
#letsBringOnTuesday!!!!4 -
Coleague: "Hey! get back to work, stop drawing weeb shit"
(pictured below)
Me: "Heroku's building"
Colleague: "oh, carry on"3 -
Coworker was adversarial from the get. He would always bully me by saying “You better do [BLANK]!” whenever we’d discuss tasks to be done. He eventually pushed my buttons too many times. I responded to his bullying tactic by yelling back, “IF I DON’T, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT!? Stop bullying me and let’s work TOGETHER on this!” I realize now he was fucking with my head.2
-
So last time I said I'm gonna look for a new job.
I just had a discussion with the boss and he is very apologetic and understands my situation and frustration very well. He agreed that they are having a technical dept, so at least he knows what's up and wants to get it finally forever fixed.
Since I wanted to go self employed anyways, we've come up that I only work for them, if there is a reason and real work to do. No more useless backend work for me *pew*.
We will also split my weekly hours from 40 to 20h and increase my hourly wage.
I'm gonna hear back by Monday for the details and legal paperwork.
Wish me luck, feeling positive about this!2 -
Why I sometimes hate linux:
Found old computer with freya os.. I usually work on Windows, so I thought lets try to work on linux for a change..
First things first: sudo apt-get update / upgrade and while it is doing all the updates lets get something to drink..
Came back, logged inn and mouse is gone.. after some googling and searching on my mobile i found out that alt+ctrl+f1 and then alt+ctrl+f7 fixes problem..
Mouse now is back but upgrade failed half way though because no network.. wifi stopped working.. something wrong with drivers.. so to continue upgrade of OS i need a cable now.. (restart didn't work)
Two hours later I managed to update everything, wifi drivers are working and I managed to post this.. But it's too late to do anything, so I will probably put this away again for couple months and will go through same shit next time I open it.5 -
Great
Updated GPU drivers, turned my PC off while i was getting something to eat and watch YouTube videos in the living room, decided to go work on some project, turn my PC back on, and... Nothing works...
Neither of my monitors displays anything and not even my keyboard turns on... Didn't even get to see the splash screen of my mobo vendor
Why does this shit always happen to me?7 -
I will start my own companies:-
A.I. Job Centre (true A.I. would get bored of their employer and search for greater challenges)
A.I. Counselling (dev life)
A.I. Pornsites (because all A.I. should have a binary life of work and play <3)
A cake factory (so the cake is not a lie)
A.I. devRant (to lower their work efficiency)
I then use the funds from the above to hire a team and we'd develop a flawless Wannacry for A.I. (for a dementia like effect)
You can all have your jobs back and you're welcome. -
New boss gets us to work overtime, all weekend and till 9pm. Promising that we will get that time back.
We get the project through the door. His KPI looks great to his boss. He then slithers his way around hints about this time back. Someone confronted him today and he says he can't officially recognise the over time due to company policy. The fucker.9 -
Sitting down all day doesn't do my back much good, so thought I'd look for an electric back massager. And there's plenty around - great! So I do the normal thing I do and take a look at the reviews...
...but the reviews are completely unhelpful, because about 5% are the usual complaining it turned up late, 5% are maybe talking about using it as a back massager, and the remaining 90% seem to be using it as a vibrator. Some are even just bloody ambiguous. I'm still not sure if "takes a bit of work to get it in the right spot, but it's very effective when it's there" is referring to someone with a sore back, or someone who's sexually frustrated. Who knows, maybe both.
First world problems eh.14 -
>Be me
>Notice cute girl in college
>Won't work because reptilian brain too stupid
>Girl needs help studying C
>Teach her C because I'm an idiot
>She turns out to be a bigger idiot, and has problems grasping FizzBuzz problems
>Thoroughly turned off
>Help her get 80% in semester end exam
>Breathe a sigh of relief, get back to usual schedule
>Girl admits to liking me
>Said that girl and I are not on similar wavelengths
>Girl asks me if I think she's stupid, and now is angry with me
>What did I do?17 -
Updated an online profile on a jobsite this morning for a frontend job. Got called this afternoon:
Recruiter: “i have this great frontend opportunity for you. Are you interested and can i mail the vacancy over?”
Me: “yes i’m looking for something so mail it and i’ll get back at you”
A few moments later...
Recruiter mailed a backend function
This is why people don’t like to work with recruiters.3 -
Have an idea for a fun little side project coding a game. Install Unity and read up some samples.
Remember I'm awful at any kind of creative design work.
Get sad and go back to Overwatch.5 -
How to legitely stop falling a sleep at work? Walk around outside. Get some sunlight. Find a store. Buy ice cream. Get back. Feels ok af.5
-
I’m hired as pizza making burger flipper for $12/hr since I have no formal schooling and then I am walked out back to the utility room to do what cooks REALLY DO... Secret network engineering and admin... Never fails... They always find out and I always end up replacing whatever company or person they used for tech/admin work.
Time to at least get some Oracle certs and a nano degree!5 -
Woke up an hour early today.
I could get up and be at work early, so I can leave earlier to use the afternoon on this nice spring day.
Or I could go back to sleep because I'm still a little bit tired.
-> Scrolling through devRant an hour and a half. -
Me: I have so much to do! How the hell am I going to get all this done?!
**hears someone say something about some framework/library I don't know**
Me: hmmm let me google that real quick then I'll get back to work...
**3 hours later**
Me: damnit! I'm never going to get my work done! -
Fuck WFH. I'm so tired of kids yelling. people eating, fucking noises and people leaving their desks for hour, and sayigg I'm sorry I was speaking on mute. Fuck WFH. Everybody needs to get their asses back to the office, and actually do the damn work.
WFH only works if you have kickass passionate people who love their job with an ounce of responsibility.10 -
I feel like I need to morph into an octopus to keep efficiently doing my work.
Too few hands, too few brains...
And I just can't fucking focus on 5 things fucking simultaneously...
I was coding.
-> Customer calls
-> New ticket with higher priority
-> I get back to coding
-> Boss calls, do ticket first
(Rinse and repeat)
I don't even know if I'm able to at least get a raise as a trainee, but our company only has two (2) developers right now, including me... And since our senior left, we do a fuckton more work.
I do way more than other trainees in my class and compared to some other colleagues, seriously.
In any case, we got reviews and feedback rounds with our bosses next week, and I wrote a DIN A4 page of reasons why I want to get at least a small raise.
Not gonna read it off, of course, but gonna go along it...
Wish me luck.5 -
"Ok guys. These files are just too big. If we change 'function' to 'f' - and 'var' to 'v' - and just make every keyword and variable possible: a 1-letter key, things will be much tidier and I can get back to focusing on work. It's just too messy."8

It’s so great to hear Apple is finally officially making the transition to rolling out their own silicon on everything... fucken fabulous. Sure there may be problems at first but this might just get the ball rolling to get more companies todo the same... we need to eliminate the silicon monopolies... ARM and rolling your own is the future... well it always use to be the standard... back in the day, until the whole modularity and lean manufacturing and order off the shelf shit came about .... but finally we have once again come full circle back to where things use to be.... pairing hardware with software fucken beautiful LOVE IT!!!
Sure this will affect portability but .... guess what folks... means more jobs for us... quit being lazy and complaining about having to work..
Love vertical integration!!!!34 -
You get to work, things have broken down in the night, you have no access to production or even test environment and you have to guess why. You do the same job as somebody in other countries for less pay while everyone else has this laid back approach where the time they actually spend working is negligible. Until the sheer amount of entropy in your organization wears you down and you just become part of the problem.
-
When you get called back into work at 5:30 in the morning for an urgent problem... Come to find out its because, "I forgot my internet access password, can you reset it...?" Are you shitting me? Fucking (L)user! In taking today off, fuck this.
-
Worst Monday ever.... going back to work today after a lovely week off. Just checked my emails before I get to the office and I’m already offended by the amount of ‘stupid’ that has happened whilst I’ve been away. Wish me luck, I may have murdered someone by the end of the day!2
-
So two guys at the company I work for just quitted, We were 4 in the "dev" department, 2 front end and 2 back end, now we're just 1 front and 1 back, should I try to get a raise?? I've been working steady for 8 months now.4

Before devRant:
* Sit back and enjoy the night watching series/movies*
* Chills in the weekends*
- It's nice to code at work
😊
After devRant:
*anxiety building up*
*start sweating*
Should I code all time?

When I get home I'll start a project7 -
Quick Tutorial: How to find a missing bug.
0) Wake up & have breakfast
1) Goto work
2) Do your job until the end of the working day
3) Make a backup
4) Shutdown your PC
5) Stand up
6) Go to the office door
7) Grab the door
8) Now the phone rings
9) Turn and go back
10) Take the phone
11) Now you get the bug report
This is a well approved method.
It always works!3 -
Is it just me who looks forward to long weekend but when it's actually here, gets bored after 2 days and now looks forward to get back to work?
Or have I lost it?3 -
(1st week Monday)
Went to a game programmer job interview, job description says most of unity related stuffs; create games in Unity, code in c#, work within Unity to build robust game systems etc.
Interviewer asked for my experience and portfolios, showed him. Then he asked me some questions about making interactable objects in a VR scene, then asked if I'm able to do a demo (on oculus rift) to prove him I can do it.
I don't have oculus rift, I'm allowed to go their office and use their rift for testing though.
Dateline = 2nd week Friday.
(2nd week Monday)
Showed him a demo scene in GearVR, he seems pretty satisfied.
He: I will get back to you next Monday. I'll wait for client's reply first.
Me: (smile and jokingly said) so...... If the client doesn't get back to you or doesn't want the project anymore, means I don't get the job?
He instantly replied: no (with a serious face)
Then said: You shouldn't reply with that "attitude", you should instead think of "is there any reason to hire you if client doesn't get back to me"
*backfired, but wtf?*
*insert meme here*
(Please comment, am I too rude? Or *unprofessional*, but it's just a joke ffs)
He also asked if I'm able to do it on rift since I made it on GearVR already.
I said yes, depends on the controller used.
(Any dev with common logic should understand it'll work too, with given SDK, even without, some hacks should do it, just a matter of time)
(He even told me he's a dev himself)
(Should I insert the meme here again?)
But he doesn't accept the answer. He wants me to give him a text (through WhatsApp), telling him *in a professional way* that I can do it.
*wtf*
*insert meme here*
(Last day of third week)
Needless to say, he didn't get back to me. Thought he promised he would.
Things to note:
Job description doesn't say anything about VR.
Spend a week of my time to do his demo without obligations.
Didn't get to ask much about his role and job scope either.7 -
Took some time off with the Mrs for our crotch goblin's first birthday and it was wonderful. I properly switched off for the first time since he was born, barely touched a keyboard, went outside, slept. I felt great.
But Jesus H Christ trying to get my mind back into work mode is a slow and difficult process. More coffee please.5 -
Starting. Seriously I'm closing that gap on turning 30 and I'm tired of being a wage slave so I'm teaching myself by using resources I've found online but the immense amount of knowledge I need seems unsurmountable.
I'm coming home from work and learning for at least two hours before going to bed and going back to work but it seems so far until I get to be creating stuff instead of just trying to absorb as much of the basics as fast as possible.5 -
I don't want to work on the project at my job anymore. It's an over engineered piece of shit.
I work on my pet project at home, but only for about 20 minutes at a time. After that, I feel the need to walk away and waste my time with other non-productive activities.
How do I get my love for development back? Has the corporate world killed it?5 -
Get back to work today, see a mail from yesterday when I was off sick
"Mr Colleague has tendered his registration. His last day with Company will be 31st Jan 2024"
Do they think we're stupid or something? We all know the guy got sacked. We're required to give a calendar month's notice. So when there's a same day resignation, we all know7 -
Oh man, I fucked up...
I was doing after hours work for client, setup website with https.
Can't work over sftp with current user,so I give it the same user ID as apache, get files transferred and shit.
Go back to change uid, set wrong uid, now my user is ntp, I can't get into root, can't set password...
I fucked up
Tail between the legs, sent email to clients support, asking them to fix my user fuck up, waiting for reply -
!rant GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!
I failed at a dating sim, how the fuck did I fail at a dating sim? They're designed to make you feel love and romance or some shit like that! The girl got hit by a car, almost died, got amnesia, forgot all about me and then presumably started dating me, but I don't know CAUSE THE FUCKING GAME ENDED!
*sigh* I have work to get back to.13 -
You ever spend a few weeks on a problem. Make little headway on it then get distracted and forget about it for 2 months only to comeback and fix/finish the entire thing in a handful of hours.
That was me today. Could not get something to work back in March. Didn't touch it till today. And just magically I knew what I was doing wrong before6 -
We had a Christmas party at work. We did a traditional white elephant gift game. I stole some larping swords from one guy, somebody else stole them from me, and another guy named Bilbo stole them and ended up with them.
After the party I am at my desk. Bilbo comes over with the swords and gives them to me. He said, "You looked like you really wanted these." I said thank you. I was really touched by that gesture.
Bilbo had tried to get golf balls during the game and lost them. So I went to the store at lunch today and got him a 12 pack of Titleists for $25. I don't golf, but people I work with say they are good. I left these on his desk. He comes to me later and says, "I cannot accept these. It is just too much money." I said its not too much and explained I was touched by his gesture. He tells me to take them back and get something nice for myself. Which is another nice gesture. Bilbo said when we get back from Christmas break we can do lunch.
So I am a bit baffled. Did I cross a line I shouldn't cross? Is Bilbo just too nice? I was really hoping he would enjoy this. I get it. We are coworkers and not family. I truly respect and like the guy.
Anyway, I am unsure what to do with them. I didn't really want to take them back. I tried to give them to another guy I work with and he wouldn't take them either. One talked about paying for them then decided he didn't want them. I have more shopping to do so I can take them back then. It kind of weirds me out to say $25 is too much money. I can hardly go a day without spending that much on a couple of random small things.9 -
Back where I used to work, we had this a-hole call center guy who isn't a programmer but got promoted as our team leader. He said he used to program on his early days at the company (?) . He claims that made back-ups of his source code in MS Word and even tries to gives us a lecture about backing up programs.
I really hate those a-wipes who often get promoted and suddenly goes up to their headsjoke/meme that guy ms word programming meme douchebaggery douchebag fake programmer testicular capacities7 -
I get back from Christmas vacation. I read all the unread emails and team chats, then go to work on my assigned tickets. As far as I can tell, those tickets are all I need to work on.
Then my boss snaps at me during our team catchup that I'm supposed to be working on a different set of tickets. Which were not visible on the board. Which were not assigned to me. Which nobody on the fucking team bothered to update me on. Of course if I point those out it'll just be a pain to deal with (especially since my boss doesn't seem to have my back, unless he needs something).
I thought my vacation would help me re-energize and get motivated again for this job, but coming back I'm reminded how unhappy I am now here. I've started applying elsewhere, but I don't know if I can continue to put up with this bullshit until I find a new employer.
Any tips or advice from folks who've felt unhappy in their job in the last year?5 -
*face palm*
My boss just IM'd me. She asked me the status of a work item. I told her my teammate completed it on 2/27. She wanted to know if it was in production. I said I was unsure, she would have to ask my teammate. So of course, she asked *me* to ask my teammate, and then get back to her.....WHY do I need to ask my coworkers stuff for her? She is the BOSS, last time I checked?2 -
According to many of the rant posts, I am not a programmer.
I wake up 8 in the morning, eat breakfast at home and then get to the office at 9. Work till noon and then enough 1 hour lunch, back from lunch work till like 6-7 pm, have dinner at office then head to the gym workout for an hour to an hour and half and then head home, shower and sleep at 11:59 pm.7 -
Person: "Can you speed up my computer? Don't delete anything though."
Me: "Your hard drive is at 99%... you need to get rid of some stuff."
Person: "Can't you do it with out deleting anything?"
Me: "We can move it to a cloud service..."
Person :"No, that won't work. How will get my stuff back?"
Me: "Nvm..."2 -
I hate moving
But moving back in with your parents is even worse
Even worse when your parents are hoarders and so you get to move back into a room where you then get to clear out random shit that isn't yours. And try to convince your parents to throw out a dresser that only 3/8 drawers work in it but they want to keep it.
*Sighs*8 -
In my previous work, when I was under pressure (very often, because we were to few people for all the work) I used to manage the situation in the following way:
PM: It's super-important and prioritary to develop < 2 days feature >. Sales really need that feature because they cannot work without it.
Me: Ok. I'll need from them < 2-hours-to-get data > and then I can leave what I'm doing and start with the feature.
PM: *... goes to tell sales ... comes back*
PM: Well, they say they can work by doing < some not as confortable way as feature, but pretty acceptable >.
Me: Ok, then I'll continue trying to prevent the systems break down inminently.
On this work I learned a lot, but clearly, we were too few people to mantain the site, and too much lazy sales people. -
When you're trying to solve a problem and you're spinning your head around then you check your phone and see the co-founder of a service you love just liked your rant.
You feel like: awee!! thank you 😍
Then you get back to work with some good portion of dopamine in your head to support you
Thanks again for this service 🙏1 -
Now that I work from home as a freelancer, my favourite way to get through a tough day is:
1. Scream internally
2. Realise I’m getting over-stressed
3. Roll myself a blunt
4. Smoke said blunt
5. Dick about on YouTube / internet for a while
6. Make myself a drink (tea etc)
7. Come back and work the problem with a better perspective and fresh eyes.3 -
There’s literally poor people dying of COVID because they can’t get beds and my bosses are sharing shitposts on LinkedIn about fun “coming back to work games”3
-
This year has been rough. No programming. 3 great job applications snuffed. Currently unemployed, and all my recent job experience in a field I don't want to continue working in due to not making my 3 career options. (Military and policing sort of thing)
So since I'm off for the holidays, and looking to really get back into computer work, I've come back to devRant. Missed you guys. <3
Now I've got to actually get good at something, and preferably employed in doing it. Any advice or stories are appreciated :D (but my mom said not to listen to strangers on the internet, so...)3 -
OMFG, my upper back is so painfully stiff that I can't even breathe in w/o feeling like two knives are stabbed right between my shoulder blades.
And the weather outside is sooo excellent - first snow this season and it's so white and clean all around. A child inside me already has his mittens and warm boots on and impatiently waiting at the door to get outside to play with the snow.
And I'm supposed to somehow concentrate on work.16 -
So I've been really Ill the past few days, like litterly been in bed for two days, popping pills like there going out of fashion. I contact work and get the typical "get well soon" so I get a message today asking how I'm doing (still Ill), I said I'll be back Monday and ask if anything is urgent that needs to be done first thing. So I get a list:
Project A: Deadline Monday
Project B: final review Tuesday
Project C: Still waiting on feedback
So I ask any chance we can extend the deadlines by a day or so I have enough time to catch up even though I'm going to have to rush it as I've been off.
Answer.. nope there non negotiable.. oh
So they want basically three days work done in one day, given the fact I still might not be 100%. Jesus Christ 😂
Quick Edit, I wasn't told there were deadlines.8 -
Today my therapist suggested I work towards one day getting back the will and energy to start coding side projects, just for the fun of it.
That was a long, long time since I had the ability to do. Maybe I can get back to feeling that much in control that I can let work go for a day or two each week and just... Have fun coding. What a mind-boggling thought.2 -
Being on personal leave for a funeral but can't stop thinking of what I have to do when I get back to work 😣
-
How can I just "chill"?!
Our project's demo is coming up soon and since we there only two in the team we have to work together.
I did all the coding and my so-called "team mate" just watched behind my back or refreshed the git!!!!
And we get the same pay. 😧😤

When you miss a couple of days of work and get back to find out management has decided to do a complete redesign of the redesign you just redesigned! What the flying fuck!

One of the executives at my work insisted we rush to get a project done back in January so that he could use it immediately for auditing purposes.
Just pulled a report and found out he hasn't used a single thing we built for him not even ONCE since we pushed it. He hasn't even logged in. So livid.2 -
Couldn't save a file because it showed me that this file is opened somewhere else. So I go to the resource monitor to check for its handlers, but only explorer.exe showed in list. I restart explorer and get back to the code. For the first time..... for the first time in my life I hoped that this won't work. I press Ctrl+S, andddd, file was saved.
So, basically, windows's explorer can lock files. Nice job Microsoft. Nice job. -
Almost 2 years working at this small IT company that has 7 developers and I just had my first small-talk conversation with the lead senior developer that was not related to work.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like to be able to chat to my colleagues instead of just saying "Good morning" and "See you tomorrow" and discussing my tasks. In any case, I'll go get a coffee and get back to coding.1 -
Had to work with a lazy, stupid idiot who (literally) couldn't declare an empty string. Got in via nepotism and not only were there no basics but also no willingness to improve.
Something tells me that throwing someone out shouldn't be a pleasant thing to do but hell, I'm so happy that we can finally stop carrying that piece of dead weight and get back to pure coding without having to teach Programming 101 on the side.4 -
Back from long weekend... Already want another...
Perhaps I've finally realized the team cannot be saved, work isn't fun anymore, it sucks being the linchpin, and I'm just not having fun anymore...
And for one I think I've even take a pay cut to get onto a new but better managed and 100% senior team -
My coWorker cried at her desk all day because of a post on Facebook. Apparently her aunt was trying was finding a new home for her grandma's dog.
(Don't Ask!)
Often times I have to share the burden of 'Dr. Phillin' her just so I can work done. I tell my other coWorker this so he knows her fragile mental state and I get this back in Slack. -
I swear I get multiple emails every week from a person who's forgotten their password but instead insists our software is broken. "Account Broken, Can't Login!"
I've started just replying to these emails without even checking their accounts anymore -- or even opening up the system.
I'll say, "I'm sorry to hear that! I've looked into your account and it should work now."
I always get a reply back "THANKS! It works great now!"
Then I facepalm.1 -
Today's episode of Bluey is called: "I am not ready to go back to work after a week long mandatory vacation in which I will go back into a space that has made my passion into a shitless grabs for money"
Seriously, If I hear "the president of the institution does not like <X>" I will blow my brains out.
What is worse, every "leAderShiP" meeting I ask if shit is actually a policy towards were my department head says "no, but the boss does not like <X>" <--- then fucking make it a policy.
Seriously, I have a wife, I have but one woman to keep happy, I ain't about to break my back on dumb shit that some lady dislikes when I already have to keep 1 woman happy.
Going to work is a paycheck to me, but fuck man, I am seriously leaving. Good luck trying to find fkers this part of town that can patch my software be it that I wrote it in the most esoteric shit known to mankind on these modern days.
Might start listening to recruiters, I get about 50 offers a day.1 -
404, Swag not found 🥲
I got sick and tired of waiting (4 years) for the debugging ducks to be re-stocked in the swag store, so i made my own.
Yes, I’m a front end developer and the domain redirects to an Etsy shop because I’m too fucking busy carrying the entire company that i work for on my back to develop my own custom one.
I’ll get around to it once PMO/Design/Marketing ops and Business get around to doing their jobs themselves.10 -
At home: a glass of nice single malt whiskey, headphones on with some chill background music and that's all I need.
At work: First half an hour up to one hours goes into deciding what to do / waking up and having the first 2-4 cups of coffee.
Headphones on with some chill background music and I get into the zone for a quick moment before it's lunch time and it takes up to 1h after the lunch break to get back to the zone and multiple coffee cups.
In the afternoon I usually get into the zone and real speed with my work and quite often almost forget to go home :/ -
I have an idea but no time to build it. So I'll throw it out there and see if anyone does it.
How many times have you had an idea that just couldn't get off the ground without a little assistance. Where do you go? How to "pay" them for their work? Etc.
The development community needs a place where you can volunteer to help with side projects and get paid in karma... which you can then later use to "pay" other developers to assist on a side project of your own.
We are already a community that loves to give back, and collecting fake internet points. Why not put those to good use?9 -
Emailed my PM a new project spec, the next morning he emails me back saying, to stop wasting time and get back to "real" work.
A few days later we had a Skype meeting with senior management and the PM who rejected the spec to go over that same spec document among other projects, everyone agrees it's a good idea including the PM :D

So everytime I get tired at work I always run 'composer update' so I have an excuse for doing nothing.
"Heyy get back to work!"
"I'm running composer update"
"Okay." -
Just rebooted my work station during a video conference because the VPN was flaking out.
After reboot, launch Teams to get back to the meeting. The VPN credentials dialog then pops up, but IS NOT MODAL, so I end up sending my password to the group chat...
Time to change my password, I guess.3 -
Send the dev a request for a design before they do a delicate process. They send back some mess done in MSPaint and a ton of select statements, with no context or explanation.
Send back an example of what they need to work through. Get back a response saying that the previous spec was just a draft, and once they complete development they’ll complete the design.
Why would I want a design once it was too late? What would be the point? -
Soo highlight. I’m a Tech Lead dev, and I happened to have had a gunshot injury in 2021 Dec, and kinda suffered some hectic stuff but long story short, I went through a full year from recovery and blah blah, but anyways after that year when I went back to work my boss(former), asked I go for psychological tests etc, then after that I passed everything as normal but then soon as I went back to work my boss took me to HR for some special performance review process that could mean I get fired or put back in the team again. My question is it this a fair trial when I never got another chance to work again as I was hired??? I need help pls :(4
-
Me after Linux reinstall: "this is great, now let's get back to work. Let's install the packages, then let's run the test server. What do you mean postgres can't be found? Wait... Fuck. Fuck. Fuck." When you realise that you forgot to backup the test database 😂2

How to take breaks?? Whenever I have something urgent to do, once I'm finished I can't get back to work quickly. I need a lot of time before diving into work again.
This way I can't keep myself productive.4 -
Pm: we need to add a feature to the app, how long will it take you?
Me: what is this "feature"?
Pm: we still polishing the idea, how long will it take you to add a feature to the app?
Me: bitch wtf? Get back to work!! -
The meetings where you have to attend the whole thing, but only the few minutes are actually applicable to you.
Let me quietly leave and get back to work.3 -
I think I have made a big mistake. I posted a freelancer project to a FB group. I was trying to be very careful and vet people closely so there would be less chance of fraud. The guy I gave the work, and a deposit, to was either very, very, very good at constructing a bulletproof social media profile con game or he's just too busy to get back to me on a status report I asked for two days ago. :(

Set some dev goals..
TLDR: spend less time at work coding
No, really..for what I do at work, I am happy. Would like to learn more recent stuff (partially stuck with vb.net), but I don't even know where to start googling.. sooo... get more free time I guess to figure this out..which is a dev goal on it's own too, come to think of it, this translates as don't spend so much time at work coding.. and spend some of it learning new (dev related) things outside of work..new/different js frameworks, python (been fixing/adding some code here & there, but never learned it properly & to check it's full potential, I heard it is awesome btw), read up on algorithm time costs (learn how to fuckin spell this!!)...
And kinda dev related as I will have to spend less time at work is to get back in 'sort of' shape and climb (more)..and spend more quality time with my husband, who is too good, totally supports me & my work, so I never get to hear him nag I was working late, which leads to 'stop working so long' goal I rly need to get in order or I'll burn out again, and I'm bitchy and horrible whe BO..and we don't wanna see that again..
Sum up: work less, learn new things, climb more, be happy/content.1 -
Why the fuck don’t people add their job titles on Slack!!! You’ll get a random message or bug report and you’ll have to go back to Bamboo Hr to know what team the idiot work in.3

On holiday skiing in France and all I can hear as I come down the mountain is the ring tone I assign all work related contacts.
Get to lunch and see 10 missed calls ... I will be saying "I had no signal on the mountain" a lot when I get back -
A lot has changed over the last month for me in my life.
The cases are rising crazily now. Thanks to the stupid govt's immature and unplanned lockdown.
Now while over 20k+ cases are being reported every single day, there is no sign or plan to contain it properly.
Two weeks ago, I had a mental breakdown over the uncertainty in future plans ( was planning to get a job in remote company and ditch current job to go back home in this grave situation but it has been delayed ) and burnout from living almost same routine since mid-March. I just wanted to go back to my home state where I will feel safe even if I get infected somehow.
Me and my friends have vacated our rented apartment last weekend. I'm now at the airport to leave this city and in less than 8 hrs, I will be back to my home where I will stay 14 days in quarantine before I can go out again.
I'm glad to have a job which I can "work from home". But more importantly, I'm glad to go back to my place which I can truly call my home. 🏠♥️23 -
Super easy to get motivated to work on my own projects every Friday: I look back at how many and how difficult the things I worked on during the week. I take how much I got paid and divide it by the sum of (numProjects * difficulty(1 to 4)). If I spent anywhere near that number on just coffee this week, well then Friday afternoon goes towards working on my own projects (yeah Friday morning- still have a lot of work to do and coffee to drink.)1
-
New task with a march deadline, our 1 developer (me) will work on multiple projects, while also learning about AR (I'm a WebDev) and creating a commercial ready AR app....
I think it's time to get back to looking for a new job... -
@tahnik so I surfed on over to devrantron's repo, and I had to say that I found that "gave up on hot reloading" commit hilarious, because I was looking at how to get it to work a few months back and was like "FUCK that shit"--it really spoke to me XD2
-
So I got reprimanded for some error on a site. I proved that this was a back end problem and that this has nothing to do with me (I'm just a front end dev). Didn't get a single apology, the dev who broke the thing got off scot free and now i have to work overtime while they publish the changes to test them
-
Client: Thank you for this and all your hard work we will review and get back to you EOP Friday before final submit.
Us: We have been working to a deadline and have actually finished early which meant that we would be able to submit on Friday, at the very least by the afternoon. One question...is this your time EOP Friday?
Client: Yes
Us: That'll be 2 in the morning here and a Saturday.2 -
First day back at my old workplace and the guy who replaced me as storeman is going to put me in an early grave...
Literally all of the work I put in over the past year and a bit is gone...
Welp... Let's hope I can get a higher up position soon so I can fix this shit heap .-. -
idk how people have time/passion to work on side-projects after work.
or is it just me, who always wants to build something, but ultimately feels stuck, tired and hopeless.
how do I get back to that state when developing stuff was fun?5 -
Finally managed to get my website up and running after a week of going back and forth with Hostgator. I'm really excited about it even though I know it's not quite ready and needs more work.
Even so, please have a look and tell me what you think :)

Now that I've joined a proper full time "software engineering" job, I guess it's time to get back to ranting.
It's been a month and a half since I've joined here and they have no work for me. And the fact that I've been given a Windows system with restricted access makes it worse4 -
The idea of going back to work in an office terrifies me. Like...it really scares me. I really hope things work out even better than I hope and I get to keep working from home while still projecting my career upwards.4

Was recently in a motorcycle accident and haven't been cleared to go back to work yet so I'm trying to build my first Android app.
I don't know Java, XML, kotlin, Android studio, or what the fuck a Gradle is; but I figured I'd take my app idea and download Android studio then try winging everything from there.
Needless to say, I'm having a damn hard time lol. I have been watching firebase tutorials on YouTube to try and figure out how to add authentication to my app. I kinda got it working in the AVD. But my personal Google account has 2FA enabled so I can't seem to get the app to sign me out, or sign me back in. (I was able to authenticate once successfully.)
I have no idea if having 2FA enabled is even the problem. I tried turning on debugging and can't seem to figure out how to actually get the app to debug or get a debug console open.
I seriously feel like the world's biggest n00b right now. Going to go YouTube/Google how to get the debugging working. Then I'm off for a round of learning how to read a debug report!
Hahahaha... Kill me now -_-'2 -
Working full time and going back to college......
I got my full time gig in January. This semester I decided to go back for my bachelor's because I only got my associates degree. Honestly balancing the homework and work isnt that bad. It's trying to get ANYTHING ELSE done....like getting and oil change, going to the dentist, etc. I have to use paid time off for all of it now. :(2 -
I dislike holidays since I often get bored. Tempted to get a train back home and go to work, just for something to do1
-
So I am on a vacation for a month and a few days before it ends. My boss calls me and tells me "why don't you take one more week" then he told me that's when he will be back to work as well because he is traveling. When I told him why he said he wants to talk to be before getting back to work.
When he found me sounding worried, he said don't worry there is nothing you are missing we just want to align our plans and give you updates on the period you were gone for.
When I asked him what if I wanted to get back to work sooner, he said I prefer if you wait till I come back
And now I am super worried and paranoid, advice please 😥5 -
So I'm back in school for a graduate program... mostly just to continue deferring loans because that seemed like a smart choice....
Anyway I'm back in school and at the end of the third class I realize I just spent the last hour teaching the class....how to hack....how did this happen?
I'm so disoriented I don't know what's going on anymore...I get to work and suddenly I'm teaching again...when did this happen?
Am I now stuck in some role as a mentor and teacher? If that's the case we are all screwed.
Those who can't do instead teach?
So, who wants to learn something useful? The below is pretty entertaining.

Today I have fixed an issue in 300k usd servers that have been sitting there for almost 6 months... Even the vendor (which is a major company) did not wanna touch them. Nobody knows about it yet but I'm proud of myself but at the same time I feel a big resentment because despite my hard work I will not get to spend the next holiday which is a month from now with my family because all coworker went behind my back to the manager and took a vacation and manager will not even allow a work from home day... 1 single day. That's the only working day that week. But without it I can't go back home because home is 20 hours away... More if I take a connecting flight5

Going from a project in fire and 60+ hours a week back down to in-between projects and 40 hours a week. For the first week I was so confused on what I should be doing. Now I realize I have time for my own projects. I bet my work like goes crazy just as soon as I get into something.

Low code platforms (e.g. OutSystems) will gradually win over developers who will look back at all the time they've wasted and think "why the fuck didn't tell me about this sooner!!!"
Disclaimer: I work for OutSystems and can honestly say that I can create a production-ready app while you're still picking the best JS framework to get started with. Been there...
Actual rant: Time to move up the abstraction layer, get stuff done on time and on budget and go home (also on time) to enjoy life!12 -
Living in a small island in the pacific makes it difficult to find skilled peers to work on projects with. People are so laid back (lack commitment) and lack the skills. I want to get out of here..!!3

For a back-end, Java engineer, It's really sad when you are so bored at work that you get excited at the thought of designing SQL views/procs to make prod support easier.

- Learn python
- Learn ML
- Move from client projects and start/finish my own project
- Find time/money to start PhD studies

Had to focus on working when I finished my master so I hope to get back to science part of work -
A few years ago a client who sold printer ink on eBay and Amazon wanted to branch out to another store, so I grudgingly began to implement the new API, I followed all the API docs but no matter what, I couldn’t get it to work, eventually I contacted their support and was told it should work. Turns out the test API was faulty and that they had no interest in fixing it instead suggested we tried test data on their live account. I refused and for once the PM agreed with me and went back to the client saying the problem was the retailer.

I think the worst feeling ever is taking a break from something, then coming back to it and realizing that you have to rewrite something because you put it off before you took a break.
I've had a lot going on lately, and I decided to work on a web dev project I was doing to get the hang of frontend development. Just realized that I have to rewrite a couple functions. Someone kill me now1 -
Being drunk I keep thinking I can't get back the years I didn't spend programming when I was 16-20. What do now? Want to do Web but all I know is a micro part of everything. I can make a demo in old Unity. I have shitty basic skills in Java, Python, Pascal, JS + React. Also basic UX, Adobe design programs like AI, PS and ID. Nothing proper, and home projects just don't seem to cut it. Irl bards can't get no work4
-
Alright, so, let's say you're me. 16 years old, just started a summer job at a networking company. It's me and three others, and the people who hired us, quite frankly, aren't as prepared as they should be. So we get our first task at around 4, are told it's meant to last the week, and go home. Get back in the morning, find out someone did all the work overnight6
-
I totally want to refactor my project's code, but I don't have any time for it and now it's a working piece of spaghetti-ish 😭
I'm just praying I'll get to do it once it's actually finished, so I don't have to work with it again in like a year and want to travel back in time and murder myself.13 -
I work for a particular tech company doing chat based support where I troubleshoot a certain email application.
And one of the most common phrases I get is: "Hey Mister IT Guy, I am suddenly missing all of my contacts and Calendars. This super sucks! I had to rebuild my email profile to make my email work again!".
I really wish when they teach computer literacy in school they drilled "Learn How To Back Up Your Junk" more so when stuff like this happens I can get them back up and running in 10 minutes instead of telling the user they are going to have spend hours rebuilding their calendar and contacts.1 -
Have decided I'm never coding anything sober ever again, do my best work after few and somehow become the code whisperer...
Been struggling to get notifications on my Vala application to work outside of my test project... Spent about 4 days trying to work out why only to realise I never initialised it as a GTK application and only created a GTK window, so I've been trying to use some of the back end aspects when all I have actually done is create a front end with nothing else... Ugh2 -
Hi everyone... Great to be back but not feeling so great. I keep feeling... "tired", "bored", like everything I do has no fucking meaning. Like I lost all of that fun I had when I was making my own projects. I get home at 6PM from work and it feels like time passes by so fast. I can't even muster up the enthusiasm to start my own personal projects.
What do you do when you feel like this? How can I get back my enthusiasm?8 -
You win this round SQL.... but I'll be back... and when I do I'll get this stupid join and concat to work the way I want. YOU'LL SEE SQL!!!!
...If I ever buy an SQL book like I keep talking about...

OH MY GOD REFACTORING FEELS SO AWESOME
I just finished spent 4 weeks of crazy busy summer camps and I get back to a project I was working on.
Refactoring.gif
It feels so awesome to just effortlessly move stuff into methods and have it work pretty much first time.
To be fair I’m the only one working on this right now so I pretty much already knew the code but still holy cow it’s so much simpler now.
Moral of the story: Appreciate your time off and use it to unwind and let your mind wander to more creative heights before taking advantage of it after and only after you get back to the project1 -
!rant I'm lucky to work with 2 of the best back-enders in my career. We were royally pushed/screwed over today due to PM's last minute demands for a phone app that they were demoing to 1000's at a conference. Guess what, certain elements broke. But the guys jumped in to get the API fixed. It's a bit much being the only phone dev on the team but with such strong backend support, it makes it a pleasure to come into work. You know who you guys are. Thank you. Remember a little support makes all the difference in the workplace.4

Ah, now that I'm done spending my first hour of the day typing a long decline to a request for me to work overtime, I can finally get back to work.

Trying to figure out what the fuck and why I did some stuff in gradle dependencies to get shit to work
joke is I didn't understand it back then anyway and was just following some documentation to get shit to work2 -
It was in May and I had a recruiter call be up about an interview for a dev position. I went to the interview, thought it went all right and awaited feedback.
Nothing came... I called the agency a few days later and he said he'd get me something back by end of the week.
Still nothing. I called again and he was all "oh sorry, I forgot, and I'll get it tomorrow".
You can probably guess; nothing. A couple weeks pass so by now I'm pretty confident I don't have the job, so I continue looking.
Then early afternoon on a Friday in November that agency calls back:
Agency: "Hi, how are you?"
Me: "Hey, I'm fine"
Agency: "Excellent, remember that interview in May for that company?"
Me: "Yeah, why have they go another position available?"
Agency: "Better, you start work with them on Monday"
It took the guy 6 months to get back, nothing from him or the company. Then he calls up out of the blue. No idea what he would be done had I already got a job.
I actually did accept, still work there now 4 years later, for now. -
So I don't know if any of you know what BPA (Business Professionals of America) is (and its okay if you dont because its for highschoolers)
They hold competitions for us each year and Im going to be on my classes web dev team as the back-end python programmer. Weve already assigned everyone to their languages and were going to study so we can be prepared.
For the competition we have a few months to work on a website that actually works, front end, back end and all. There has to be forms and maybe even signup sheets that actually work.
Its really exciting and I'm definitely going to post the adventure of programming it along the way on devRant!!
If you wanna learn more about BPA go to their website, if your curious about what some kids get to experience then I'd suggest checking it out!!! -
testing feature: that is not what the specs say this how this is suppose to work. so, I write a bug report.
conversation with developer goes as follows
developer: this is not a bug. sends the bug report back.
me: the specs say it is a bug. I resubmit the bug.
developer: sends it back saying that it has been changed in the new specs.
me: how do I get the new specs?
developer: it is on the server, go ask your boss on where ecaxtally on the server they are. then, he closes the bug report.1 -
I needed to switch back to my laptop's keyboard (I usually have it hooked up to an external setup) but I'm instantly reminded why I don't like it...
The Up and (eph) button don't work.... can't get code or any decent typing done....2 -
Alright, anyone ranting about politics/censorship rn needs to take a break, eat some food, drink some coffee, and get back to work damnit.2

Some days I hate my work - other days I love it. Usually what happens is I make some poor decision that I have to live with and get super angry with myself, feel my colleagues are disappointed, go home, feel sad, sleep, go back, talk to them about it and try to learn from my mistakes - and then I'm back at loving work. Repeat. Software development is so much more than writing code.
-
You ever get the feeling that you work with a chisel and there's that one colleague that works with a 16lb sledge hammer?
I'll make a nice elegant fix for a problem, they'll struggle to work with it so pound it with a hammer, I'll come back to it and try to iron out some of the dents...1 -
MS Teams with multiple work accounts account swap flow:
1. Try to close the company-bound login modal 10x while being fast enough to also close the main Teams window.
2. Realize it's not gonna work, so login with the account you don't want to be on.
3. Have to type your phone pincode then accept the MS Authenticator login, and retype your pin code.
4. Finally logged in just to log back out and get the generic account choice modal so repeat step 2 & 3 with the correct account.1 -
Recruiter contacted me about a job via email. Being the intrepid dev, I GlassDoor'd them. Nothing but shit reviews, so I told him no thanks.
"Oh we've seen the reviews and we're really trying to get our stuff together."
"Not on my back, you won't. I'm not going from the frying pan into the fire. "
He sent me more email asking me to reconsider. If you have shit reviews and have to beg people, uhh, are you that stupid to think anyone will come work for you?2 -
Lean into the skid and go do something else. If i have a deadline buy a pint of crown, roll a blunt, and get back to work

Currently working a contract for a startup that never finishes the final content editing and organization task so that we can build the last page. They were in such a hurry to start and we 100% delivered everything they asked for on time and at budget. Now that we are centimeters from the finish line, they keep pushing the date back due to the CEO never having time to provide feedback. It’s been months and we cannot get to the final work to earn the final payment.
Not the worst one (which I already shared another week a while back) but definitely not fun.4 -
I have clicked on devrant accidentally while at work (just wanted to read an SMS)... I'll get back to work in an hr I gues

Life is funny, I spend years ranting about WordPress and Mac computers, while being a full stack developer, then I got the opportunity to study music abroad, two months into the semester I get offered a scholarship to work with a Mac managing WordPress sites.
Isn't life funny? -
So I developed this proxy server that will throttle down API calls to one of our providers so we don't get blocked for TOS violation...
Some dude had a tool running all day long which crashed 2 minutes before I left work.
This literally ruined my day until I recalled it's all cached!!!!
Mood is back again and I deserve my beer! -
I don't drink, mainly because I'm not going to be 21 until November, but I have been extremely tired while programming before. One time it was like 4 in the morning and I just wanted to get my app to build successfully with no errors. I got that to happen, then went to bed. When I woke up seven hours later, I went back to work on the app some more, and I had no idea what I changed when I was borderline asleep to make the app build successfully. Go figure.

Any one here have a degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering? I'm thinking about going back to school, but I'm not sure it's worth the money since I live in the US. (cries in over-expensive education costs)
I do a lot infrastructure work and some super basic programming/scripting but I think I really want to get into hardware maybe zone in on either RF or take a stab at amps/effects pedals for guitar and bass.
as an aside, I'm not trying to go back to school for job or career related reasons, I just want to noodle with stuff and maybe create my own circuitry for stuff.15 -
Navigating the realms of the mighty corporation. Sometimes in a completely different country quite some many times now.
It is not that cool.
Some people you meet are cool. But, some people I met previously was also cool. And they were my friends at work!
You get tired of all the transports.
And you always wants to go home.
Hotels are terrible places.
Finding where to go is now ten percent of your work day.
Family is missing me while I am gone. I miss them back. Video phone stuff helps alot.
And I don’t even travel a lot or very far (usually).
It’s monkey business.
I have become a corporate monkey.
I got to get out of this… -
We use celery at work, and one of the issues we face is that we use Django logging.
I'm not sure how it happened, however we only get 1 level of tracebacks from it now.
This has made debugging painstakingly difficult, since we have to manually traverse the code every time.
(we're in the process of moving to sentry, and we'll get our full logs back soon)1 -
Best advice i was given (credit to my aunt), when you're struggling to get into something just do 15 minutes work, then allow 15 minute procrastination as a reward, then 15 mins work again, another 15 min procrastination, keep going until the work's done or you stop needing a break. Usually after the first hour of this I've got my motivation back.
When I was at school I went from a C grade student to an A grade student with this technique.2 -
Sometimes I genuinely wonder what the thought process of some people is...
git checks out feature-X branch
git creates new branch off of it to work on something that has absolutely nothing to do with feature X
then opens a PR back into feature-X
Me: this has nothing to do with feature X.. i think you meant to branch off of develop and PR back into develop, no?
Them: no it was intentional .. feature-X will eventually end up on develop so I thought we'd get both features on develop.
I'm not even mad and this isn't a rant, I'm just really confused 🙂4 -
So I've been on vacation for a week now, still two days to go until I get back to work.
It's been super fun, but I am getting pretty stressed about the shit-ton of work I have to do when I come back.
How do you let go?2 -
Do any experienced developers have tips on beginning to freelance. I normally get sub-contracted work for back-end gigs, however I'd like to start landing fullstack clients of my own.
All advice welcomed! -
I had to change my password at work on Friday, on vacation until this coming Friday, taking bets on whether or not I lock myself out when I get back.

I decide to study Data Science the last 10 months, right now im very competent and have the skills get hands on real projects.
a few months ago i meet a guy on LinkedIn, i help him with some task for some stuff he was doing.
a few weeks ago he say he will hire me for work on an startup he is running with other guys.
after that he never get back to me and not get any response to my messages. i dont know what i do wrong.
now im here feeling cold and dont even know what todo for get some remote work as data scientist.
feels bad bruh :"( give me some directions, where to look for Remote Junior Data Scientist Job?9 -
When an internal wiki document you wrote for your personal reference not intended to be used as a guide, gets used as a guide.
Like I intentionally didn't write it well , with no details or explanations, it's what just happened to work for me, on my environment.
Who knows when and if this'll come back to bite us. Hopefully I don't get blamed. -
I think I am going through burnout.
How do I deal with it?
Joined a startup with crazy work culture in Jan.
Have been working 14 hours a day for months starting march 2020, and even that was only to barely keep up with my colleagues. I have been one of the top performer in my previous jobs.
since the beginning, It always bothered me seeing people working on weekends, and falling behind if I didnt, to not have time for anything else, but I started really hating it a couple of months back.
Work has slowed down a bit now, but I just can't do it. Cant focus and get even basic tasks done. Still getting by with last minute efforts but I hate it!
Dont have the guts to leave the job, but also realise I am not doing enough and will get kicked out eventually anyway.
What can I do, to get over this?15 -
I can't seem to get a job. I know I lack team skills (agile team environmetn stuff) and "commercial" experience. But I had hoped by working on Opensource projects, displaying my ability to write clean documented code, and use of TDD publicly would help get to the initial interviews. But I'm still not hearing back from anyone and it's getting harder and harder to find work when I keep getting questioned about why I haven't been employed for almost two years3
-
I can't deal with this stress anymore
I really like working at this company but the stress is getting worse and worse, too many projects going on, deadlines creeping up, micro management through "agile" and many others.
Not sure what to do, I like the people, the projects themselves but I fucking hate the management!
I think I'm gonna have to leave, I might even need a couple months break just to regain my mental power before I get back to work.2 -

Windows is the worst garbage ever...
First I get a virus becouse the antivirus didn't fucking work, then I try and do a system reset WICH FAILS, them u have to get into the uefi and do a system reset back to Windows 8, Windows 8..
So I go to the windows insider program and download the media creator thing and
.
.
IT DOESN'T WORK
It just stops at "searching for updates"and now I'm stuck with Windows 8
I can't even get the Nvidia drivers so i can't play games anymore
A big fuck you to Microsoft and merry Christmas
Btw any fixes? Thank you
</rant>9 -
Took my first PTO today since joining the new company to get my wisdom teeth extracted. Already took care of that first thing this morning. Now I actually get to kick back and listen to some records until my new GPU is delivered, and then I get to fuck off the rest of the weekend with new games because my wife says I can't do any yard work this weekend.
Only had the top two extracted because I was born without the bottoms I guess. But less pain on my wallet and my jaw, I'll happily trade in the narcotics they gave me and stick to my scotch.
Not a bad 3 day weekend in my book. Ill have to go back and figure out who/what broke the projection runner in the sandbox environment when I go back, but eh. that's a Monday problem now. 😎4 -
There are just those days where nothing seems to work. I am now 8 hours on an issue that was estimated for 3 hours and new issues pop up every time where its not even my fault. In one instance, I get the correct value back, the next time with exactly the same parameters I get a COMPLETELY different Value back which keeps crashing my code. Who coded this thing that it is so inconsistent. Starts to get REALLY annoying. ._.1

Just wanted to get back to my last rant on here: https://devrant.com/rants/1617720/...
So, even though the team still is slimming down we actually did manage to get the two applications live by the deadline. It took my saturday and a lot of hard work, but we managed to pull it off somehow. I'm so happy :)1 -
My team is split on reviewing pull requests individually vs as a group.
Personally, I don't like being interrupted to come look at a projector for 20 minutes only to go back to work for an hour, and then get pulled into yet another review. Am I the only one that thinks this is incredibly inefficient?
I prefer to go over pull requests on my own time, asking questions/making comments as needed.2 -
So I've backed font awesome 5 a while back at kickstarter. I've linked my github account to the repo. Now my mailbox get spamed by their issues.
Question: is there a way to deactivate mail notification for a single repo?
So far i found:
- disable all github mails (nope)
- unwatch the repo (would work, but I just want to disable the emails, as they make up 50% of my daily inbox)4 -
So over the past few weeks I have been smacking my head against the table tying to solve my work problem and failing to... Today I spend a few hours at work not working and playing with code making something fun and easy. After this I go back to the headache and if my magic get something working.
-
I want to code this stupid little tool just to toy with a GUI system i was reading about on github. But I'm so burned out and sick of code I just can't bring myself to even start it. I can't bring myself to work on my 3D printer I keep telling myself to get back up and running. I can't even bring myself to talk to anyone outside work even for just stupid little conversations
All I ever fucking do anymore is work, sleep, watch YouTube, and make plans ill never even fucking start I'm sick of this shit.
I'm considering working in retail for a few months just for something a little mindless compared to programming.
Another arbitrarily decided stupid work meeting is tomorrow and I'm 70% set on quitting rather than waiting to see when/if I get fired
i have enough savings to easily survive until I find a new job1 -

Since I'm a front-end developer I've been working on PHP quite a lot lately, not only for front-end but also for back-end stuff, data conversion and image manipulation.
I've found that it's quite pleasant to work with thanks to the tons of documentation around and how straightforward it is.
I don't get how much hate it gets but I assume it's because I'm only starting to work with but damn, you could even build a car with it!1 -
First year as a professional developer, and this Thanksgiving break is making it hard to get back into the code base here at work. Am I the only one?2

It's always nice when I get back to work on something I shelved and I find notes from Past Me anticipating my sub-goldfish memory.1

My client recently asked for help with a product idea he has. He already got his lead developer to hack a proof of concept together.
My client knows I have more time and would start progressing the whole project. He says that he is fed up of all of these huge plans for some huge product...
I said ok, let's start getting the next few features on and using the product with the team.
He then said he wanted a big plan for the whole thing... so I said the whole point was to just get on with it and see how we get on as there are so many unknowns.
Somehow, due to a lack of other work, I have decided to help make a proposal that is far too long for this project. Would have just been better to get on for a few days and make a MVP of the product that works.
Instead I am waiting to see if this latest proposal will actually land me this work...
I'm pretty sure all of this back and forth is proof I don't want to work for this client! -
Rough start to the morning. Working with a partner in a Power BI scenario. He uses forums, over research, to find how to map IP to latitude/longitude. Naturally our mangager wants this done as short as possible so I stay back a few hours and get it done.
Show him this morning all the effort I put in to get it to work... He denies it's good enough and proceeds to tell me 'his way' of getting a forum 'genius' is easier and will work better, and refuses to hand in what we have done... Help 😰 -
I'm so sick of having to maintain a 10 year old back-end codebase that is built on a proprietary php framework that isn't documented at all. I am still a student, and I'm left mostly alone to figure things out. It's been a while since I started, but it sucks all the energy out of me to figure out how things are built...
My senior is too busy with other projects so when I ask a question I only get answers hours later, and we work remote. He is so busy that he has to consistently work overtime.
I am so overwhelmed...5 -
My standard pattern for using 'time saving' things (frameworks, scripts, new technologies) seems to be:
1) Get excited by how easy <new thing> is to use.
2) Spend the next 12 hours trying to work out how to work with this new shit.
3) Realise I'm now further back than I started.
Today has been docker.
Easy to run my new Wildfly docker container.... can I find the IP address to connect to? Can I fuck.2 -
i usually assign the issue back to the reporter for "clarifications" and then work on a different module. 2 days later i get a response and can solve the problem faster.1

Ah yes back from school, back into trying to get Arquillian to work. After trying to build on Jenkins (just for a test if they fixed some of the Problems) suddenly it wont even build properly, because they removed the datasource that my Arquillian tests were running on. Great. Not only are my tests not working now, but the whole fucking thing won't build and trying to get a datasource into the Arquillian Container is a pain the ass.
I've set it up according to multiple tutorials. But it always tries to read a non existant datasource... Why, why, why the fuck do I have to do this shit. I fucking hate everything related to JBoss. It... never... works. -
Of course a good, long playlist of my personal jams with a beer next to me :)
But reasons to actually get to work:
1. If it's an interesting task and everything goes according to plan, I get a positive feedback loop of motivation.
2. Deadlines.
3. Personal projects are always easier for me to begin with and stay focused on.
Personal projects are also dangerous for me because I keep going back to them until I don't have any motivation to go back to my work projects... Kinda like a double edged sword I guess -
Started messing around a bit with @LucaScorpion JavaRant API thinking I might make a command line app. Well I have about 50 lines of code later and it's working to get a random rant and all the comments. The trouble is now instead of working on it I'm just back to reading rants... No way I'll ever be able to work on this without getting distracted.2

When the boss needs you to clarify a peice of info he received from a vendor/client because there's one techie word in it or the conversion involved you at one time.
I just got an email and it says we can't do 'thing a'. Does that really mean we can't do 'thing a'?
Yes. I'm gonna get back to work now. -
I got back from my small 3 day vacation Sunday and I also decided to just take a break and relax before I hop back into my lil project I’m working on but it makes me feel like shit for taking so long to get back to it. Like I know I need breaks but I feel like I’m not good if I take breaks like this Idk don’t get me wrong I fuckin love programming more than anything but i just don’t want to force myself to work on something even if I do love it.

HR declared day as holiday.
You Resume work next day and Git commits channel had 400 unread messages,
Silently telling at you like - hmm lazy lots get back to work!
To the hard workers You could’ve waited to push your commits the next day brother, we know you don’t like holidays like we do. -
Balance work and life? Recently? I’ve cut my number of friends in half. There’s been enough betrayal and petty bullshit to write a melodramatic soap opera.
I did have some work life balance once upon a time, but it’s been all work lately. Gotta get back to having some me time. Not all dev work necessarily. I’ve accidentally jumped in the real estate game with 2 feet.1 -
Sometimes there are times when we are low on motivation. Happens very often. Best thing would be to take a break, go for a run or a walk, watch some programming related videos and after a while, get back to work. You will have your motivation back by then if you stay determined!

I have been working on a really interesting project for the last 6 months, now they put it on hold because another department wants something else done.
Now I have to go back and work with shitty tech and horrible legacy code.
They said is only for a month or so, but I can feel that it will be more, way more.
I feel like it is bothering me more than it should, probably because the other project was mine since day one and was way more enjoyable to work with.
Part of me wants to quit because of this, part of me tells me that I need to wait and I will get the other project back.
What would you do? How can I shut up my internal quitter voice? -
Getting ready for another day at work.
They seem to think that scrum is the perfect tool to micromanage their team.
Thanks guys for the creative ideas on how to get back on her, but I'm doing the responsible thing and I'll send them a nice email detailing why that's fucked up and what they need to change.
Adding important words like, "that behaviour is affecting team integrity" or "it demotivates people", "It is counter productive", "it diminishes team performance", "instills fear".
Maybe, or I'll stick to my work hours and wait for my contract termination notice. 🤣 -
What do I need to know to transition from a frontend developer, to a full stack developer?
Right now I am using AngularJS (I know, very old) at my work and we are transitioning to either React or Angular. My goal is to pickup back end tasks so I can eventually become a full-stack developer. What do I need to do to get there?4 -
tldr: Deleted Win10, turned out for better
---------
**This happened a few months ago**
---------
So one day I decide I have had enough of Windows 10 and wanted to go back to Linux (A long time ago I had dual booted Ubuntu, but messed it up changing video drivers). So I create a Mint installation USB and get to work. I boot up the installation and delete the old partitions from the Ubuntu install. I install Mint and boot it up, everything works fine and dandy! I decide I want to get back on Windows to get back a few files that I wanted copies over. I turn off the computer and *try* to boot up Windows. I get an error message that I am UNABLE to boot. WHAT! After further checking, I realize that I had deleted the MBR partition of Windows. Pretty sure I could remake it if I tried hard enough, but I am starting to realize that it feels good to be totally MS independent! Now I am using all open-source software available to Linux and have no need for Windows. I do miss some of the games though...
PS: No files were lost due to backups. Save Lives, Do Backups! -
Today I came to work and all our main systems where offline (Gitlab, Artifactory, Time tracking, ...). Found out that one of the HDDs of our server (external hosted) died. I started copying some stuff from the second Raid hdd (just in case and because our backup is of course not complete [#notmyfault]) while their datacenter had a power outage.... I'm now waiting for our server to come back to get our systems running again

"Come on, people! Engage with my post!"
It does not works like that, obviously.
And yet every single fucker who comes to give some mandatory training says something like this.
Bitch, if no one engages with your "chair safety PowerPoint", it is because it sucks. Not necessarily due to your delivery, the material itself sucks.
So stop asking for engagement and just give us the quizz and we can all get back to work already!1 -
So I finally gave up trying to get TypeScript ES6 modules to work. Back to CommonJS it is, because fuck me I guess. I mean it *did* work... Until I also had to use a commonjs module at which point tsc basically tells you to fuck off with that2

Timesheets and Formations:
Every week, I'm supposed to fill out a form detailing how much time I've spent on which projects... I'm a research engineer assigned to a single project, so I'll always fill every day with 8 hours on the same project, because if it yields to less than 39h the website gets mad at you (even though I'm paid on days, not hours).
I get why it's here, I just don't get why it's my responsibility to declare which project's budgets should be liable for my salary.
As for the formations, they're always these extremely slow paced, completely obvious type of courses that borderline murder you with boredom. Yes, I know, corruption is bad, can I get back to work? -
Ok, you've got some free time and a folder full of bookmarks to get through the subjects you need for that cert....
....but it has been busy these past few months. One day out of your holiday just to chill and do nothing, then you can get to work....
....you have 9 days. 2 out of the 9 is ok just to relax, it is a holiday after all....
....ok, your going back to work in 2 days and the most you've done is read some semi-related articles that were shared on Twitter. Sort it out....
....24 hours to go, you've essentially done nothing productive. I guess I'll go back to fitting it in at work or convincing myself I'll do it when I get home after a long day.
Anyone else struggle with this? Not just for certs in particular, but just learning in general. -
Received a Slack message basically telling us not to panic and that it's not fatal (then saying it's less than 3%), and we'll have sanitizers in the office.
So, if we wash our hands and use the sanitizers often, we'll be just fine.
Didn't stop me, though, from getting WFH. So, got back to my home city and I'll be working remotely from here for at least a week (starting from Monday).
Will get to extend it to two weeks if it doesn't impede my work.6 -
TBH I feel terrible, I hire and underpay developers on upwork. I'm such a scumbag, but it's soo addictingly cheap to abuse desperate low-income devs. One day when i get my startup going, I'll make things right and pay them properly. Until then, "get back to work you third world m*ther f*ckers". I'm jk, I'm tw too.

after moving back to my home country, buying an apartment and after my career started to head to nowhere because there is nothing to code for me in work, just manager stuff, I am returning to coding after work to get back into shape, practice more, learn new stuff (and the old stuff)
wanted to create a small webapp with laravel/vue, holy fucking shit how hard it is (for me) to setup your env
install composer -> command php not found
o.O im pretty sure i had php on this machine HOW THE FUCK WOULD I HAVE ALL THESE PROJECTS HERE THEN
install php8.1 -> no such package
-.-
upgraded to ubuntu 22.04, install php8.1, composer
create new laravel project -> 3 errors, missing laravel/pint, phpunit
* visible confusion * i told you to create a project, if you need it, why didn't you... oh, wait
composer install -> same
well, * looks left, looks right * --ignore-platform-reqs
but still getting the chills from a new project, now I go sleep and tomorrow I start my journey to get back to business, wish me luck -
So about a big problem I had earlier in the two last weeks, we were waiting for the expert of the team we work with if they have any idea. But we had to wait for him to get back from their one-week break.
We asked them about it
They have no clue
fuck. -
Ok, so I recently have been losing interest in coding outside of work. I wasn't like this idk what happened. I mainly work on frontend and backend but mostly frontend. I can feel my inner self wanting to code but idk what to do, do I build something?, do I learn a new language? I heard rust would be the best language to know in a post-apocalyptic world.
Any recommendation and what to do to get back my coding vigor? thanks5 -
First day back at work, lunch time now. So far I've been to one meeting and done no work. I can't get on to the vpn. We get OTP for the vpn via sms. Sms is taking so long to come through that it always expired by the time I get it
The kicker? I work for a cellular provider1 -
Had a list of integers: 0,2,1,0,1,2,2,0. Needed to add a variable number of integers and stay as close as possible the current average.
Used their percentage to solve this. Didnt work. After a few hours I realised it is just to pick a random in the list as many times that I need to add integers.
Say I have 32 integers and need 36, just pick 4 by random, problem solved. Fuck I will never get those hours back... :( -
Microsoft Word. Back in the day, that's what was used to write documentation.
I would give up after many unsuccessful attempts to get tables, indentation and numbering to work just the way I wanted them to. -
I was reading about Lumnify's project analysis (https://lumnify.com/project-analysi...) and now I'm curious about my own probably horrendous code quality and how to improve.
Time to learn about code quality and tools I can throw my work at and get analyses back to help me not suck1 -
Today is the last day of my Lunar New Year holidays, which lasts over a week from last friday, the exact amount of time I haven’t been coding.
I have to return to work on tomorrow 🤦🏻♂️
Tell me how you guys get back your performance after a long holiday?4 -
Code review time.
"How come this line has been removed? PEP 8 likes to have two lines between imports and the first bit of code"
What I replied: Thanks. I'll put it back.
What I wanted to reply: Go fuck yourself you anal moron, who the fuck gives a shit about bollocks like that. We got fucking proper work to do, so get the fuck over yourself, let the fucking PEP shit lie, and make some fucking USEFUL comments.5 -
Nothing like constantly having to spend 3-5 days of spin up on trying to help another team with their microservices because they have such a severe lack of documentation that I can't just follow a readme to get their projects running. Instead, I have to bug one of their developers to help me get it up and running (because they use non-standard project setups and dependency management), delaying things even more. No matter how much I scream that we need documentation no one makes it a priority.
Did I mention these are microservices written in Golang and I'm a front end developer? And I'm being made to work on back end tasks because we have a crazy high attrition rate and they won't back fill the back end positions.3 -
When you're just waiting around for the designer to finish their audit of your build so you can get back to work.

When you have to be at work becuase it's work, but you finish all your work in 1 day regularly, and it takes QA 2-3 days to get back to you.... Massive downtime.2

So I've come to a crossroads and I'm trying to work out what the best way forward is and I have a question for y'all.
Is a university degree still worth it in this field? Should I go for it and get my degree or spend that time learning myself? How does this effect getting a job? And if you could go back, what would you do.
Thanks in advance.4 -
Get to work, I'm going to have a really productive day tackling problem X. What do you mean Jenkins decided to corrupt every local SVN checkout? Spent the day getting Jenkins back on its feet and trying to figure out why it hated last night. Tomorrow... I'm going to have a really productive day tackling problem X...

My coding style is influenced by the tight hours that get assigned to every task at work in order to make the projects profitable enough for what is expected by my bosses bosses boss. So just imagine back in college when you waited until the night before to start an assignment.

Have been on holiday for 2 weeks now, starting to get to the point where I can’t even sleep anymore because all I can think about is projects I want to start or other things I want/need to do. To the point where I’m typing this at 3 in the morning instead of sleeping.
Even starting to get anxious to get back to work...
Feel like such a workaholic right now. -
Gone in an instant was the shimmering gleem of hope that I'd get to work on modernization of our current code base. Back to last fucking century I guess.
-
Cannot live in this mess of a backup anymore! I do a lot of video and photo work and I back up to multiple external HDD'S . I try make sure all the files are reflected on another drive. I to get a NAS and raid 1. Has any one got recommendations? I'm looking 3tb x 2, budget friendly. What's your backup situation like?1

Back from a 2 week holiday, inbox says 100+ messages
What is your back 2 work routine to get the current project status?1 -
We have a prgram at the office that requires me to turn off everyone's antivirus for it to work properly. This has been the case for 2 months while tye software company fixes it. When our computers restart for any reason, the antivirus turns back so I have to turn it off again. I can't give peple the password though because that is the password for a few systems. I get 4 emails today from 4 people that know damn well what the problem is that all say the same thing "I cant figure out why this program wont work. We need to get this fixed or I cant do my job" all with the branch manager CC'd.
Idiots. All of them are damn idiots. 😐🔫 -
man alive do i get sick of their hidden jump out of the bush people creepos.
at least i can code. thats nice
i can code the same crap
and then they can steal it again
and then they can pretend they're being helpful being the lazy evil bastards they are.
and then i can work for 60k a year using technology rolled back too fucking far back because noone is motivated to do shit anymore. -
Ok. I still can't get SSL working on my site so I'm gonna assume its my fault. Time to go back to a default template test that get it to work and if that works go from there. Ive done EVERYTHING my host says to on the dashboard side I can short of crying to them. And honestly. Fuck that2

your work laptop (or environment) get's stolen/lost/broken, when it's the last time you backed-up ?
and as a side question, how long will it take to get everything back up and running ?2 -
Argh, why the hell does Visual Studio not have a god damn LOCAL HISTORY for files (not just a VCS history) like any other reasonable IDE? Heck, even Eclipse has a rather decent one!
Now, I've lost the work of one hour due to an accidental reset, and there is no way to get it back!
Fuck you, Visual studio! -
I am struggling to have a holiday that includes no work. I keep on panicking at random times that I'll forget to code if I go any longer. Very silly fear I know but it's happening. I dont wanna feel like I have to rediscover my path around my projects when I get back to them. So i think of their structures and things needed to complete them from time to time just to make sure I am on track.11

First thing I see when I log online is Masturbate between work. heh. Oh that and a hate rant/lure to get some guy to come online and feel like crap or respond with a ghost account.
Seems most of the amusing accounts got caught off way back.
Now we're stuck with wonderful beautiful sweet people like @Hagarth trying to be some technoviking of code and @floydimus talking about getting humped in the butt.56 -
The job is supposed to be about tinkering with and determining what tech to pull together and how to make it work best to solve novel problems. Not to roll back the code and get fast doing the same fucking project
