I thought it would be good prank change semicolons to Greek question mark in my boss' code where his delivery date is today. I thought he will spend like at least few minutes figuring it out.
He ran make, immediately figured it out and even corrected with sed only. Then yawned and looked at me with a smirk. Now I am getting paranoid what he will do as revenge46 -
getting bored of personal projects and stopping it after being halfway through, or even when they are almost complete7
-
1.) Please make WordPress die();
2.) Please prevent recruiters from getting my contact info.
3.) Please ban all "coder meme/joke" sites from instagram. They repost long dead jokes and the jokes don't even make sense if you know how to code.8 -
Linux is great they said
Linux works well they said
Linux is totally awesome they said

4 live cds
(Ubuntu, mint, Debian, Antergos)
3 wouldn’t boot beyond splash screens or even into setup.
no fucking keyboard
No fucking wifi
No fucking trackpad
Now I’m sitting here with Antergos, with a USB keyboard, USB mouse and an ethernet cable plugged into my laptop 🤷♂️
Good news... I think I might be getting through the hard parts26 -
So my coworker got assigned a task. She copied some code from some crappy site, without even bothering of getting rid of "John Doe" in strings or getting rid of unused functions.
She hands it over me for review and I discover that the code doesn't even work! She didn't even bother running it! Anyways, I knew that the task was urgent, so instead of sending her a review, I trash her code and write everything from scratch.
This morning I woke up with an email from her to the team saying that *she* completed the task. Sorry babe, but I cannot let you take credit for my stuff.7 -
Not getting into linux/foss an dumping windows/other proprietary bullshit earlier. The friends I've made through this world, the passion, the ideology behind it...
I fucking wish I'd have found out about this at a way earlier age or even begin raised with those values.8 -
Sadly to say, but devrant is slowly moving away from dev part of its name, even rant part.
More I see posts about this tech sucks vs that tech sucks. That being annoying, would be fine, not for me, but fine.
The worse part are the memes. Repost memes, not funny, though, maybe funny to some, still no effort reposts.
Even worse are posts that have nothing to do with dev. Like recent post about soldiers and gay people (maybe you saw it). Why the hell post it here?
Going down are the ++ beggers, sadly I see even more of them.
Yes I understand I can just leave this platform.
I just wanted to express these mixed feelings I have been getting for my once favorite place to read about other devs experience.16 -
I really love to share my knowledge and I have a opportunity to teach kids coding as a lector. I even switched my f-ing theme to light for them so they can see the board (they're already saying light theme sucks, I love them). Maybe it's only html/css but they're learning so fast even though they're just bunch of 12-13yo Minecraft kids 😂 I'm myself only 17 but I can see the "age gap" between us, I'm getting old...11

NEVER ACCEPT to be the ONLY DEV in the company who knows the whole product!
I am in the position of being the only one who knows all modules, there are even modules I developed which no one else will be able to maintain as soon as I leave the company, which I am planning right now and this also makes me getting depressed about.24 -
Staying nice.
I care about the product we're creating. More than I care about the feelings of my coworkers... and that's not always a strategically sound plan.
Getting annoyed with someone rarely helps make them see things your way — even when you're objectively right, and they're absolutely to blame for all that is wrong.4 -
You know your getting deep in trying to figure out a bug when you start discovering bugs not even reported yet.1
-
Dad: [this company] is coming to town soon.
Me: I know
Dad: yeah maybe you can get a IT job
Me: I dont do IT
Dad: You never know what you do until you do it.
Me: *getting an aneurism from sheer ignorance*
I DO IT EVERY DAY HOW WOULD I NOT KNOW WHAT IM DOING THAT I EVEN WENT TO SCHOOL FOR?15 -
Finally getting some upgrades for our office workstations!!
My work-pc still rocks 3rd gen core i7 with -40% performance loss because of spectre/meltdown patches and 1600 mhz ram. Its been a huge pain in the ass. Building unreal engine from source literally takes a day, while on my home Ryzen 5 it takes an our.
Ryzen 7/9 babyyy!!!
(I might even be able to talk them into a threadripper, wish me luck 😀)4 -
Software just destroyed half a year worth of work today. God bless developers. I'm getting myself a psychologist over a broken fucking server. Because software fucking killed it. And killed me with it. Do I really have to build everything from component to end product myself? Without even being a developer?15
-
What the hell @Apple
I know autocorrect / suggestions is getting worse every day but this doesn’t even remotely come close ☠️2 -
I hate the fucking fakeness at my corporate workplace. Everybody's kissing everybody's ass. What' worse is that individually, they're nice people but the environment changed them and they don't even notice it.
Also they fucking congratulate themselves for their fucking great work but all they did is basically a big crud app. We're all just a bunch of code monkeys. I'm so getting out of there.12 -
An unfriendly reminder: if you don’t know how to use a fucking search engine to at least try and find solutions to your problems, get your sorry ass the fuck out of here!
I reiterate: if you can’t utilise a search engine any better than the average gorilla, you’re an asswipe with no fucking right to even consider getting within miles of devs, you fucktard!6 -
I've found an affordable flat and it feels like winning the lottery. Before this one I wasn't even getting the overpriced ones!
*discards the tent*9 -
People who message “I’m getting a error” without any context or even better the actual error message, no one else can see your screen and we can’t magic a fix, and we’re not f***ing psychic, tell us what the f***ing error is. Or better yet, figure it f***ing out like the rest of us, you also have google - go nuts16

When the stupidest people on the planet move in next to you and burn nearly everything you own to the ground...and don't even have the courtesy to wake you up before getting out of the building themselves.10
-
I feel I am getting paid for getting trolled (you read that right) - I have had now two completely seperate clients, a month apart - paying me hundreds of dollars for "testing".
I have explained both of them atleast for a total of 8 hours why there's "sandbox" accounts and that the "virtual money" is the same as "real money", so later when you go live, it will be the exact same, just without the need of actually testing with actual money.
I even as a last suggestion asked to atleast be developing with $0.01 transactions (to literally not run out of additional money, because of the different packages), but they wanted it to be as "real" as possible. -
Sitting at home, looking at my facebook friends. Im noticing a trend that all the people getting diplomas are the ones who dont even have a github account.7

My worst choice was walking out of my first ever job.
The owner of the company was a very kind person and he really liked and appreciated my work, he even gave me a mid level salary straight away even though I was still in college and didn't have any prior experience.
But when I found myself getting so lucky I thought "oh it's so easy to get a job I can get one whenever I want" then I quit the job for college as I didn't want to do both at the same time due to stress.
The funny thing is that when I quit I didn't even focus on college, I just used the money (which was a lot) to go out and buy stuff I don't need and I even failed a course in the next semester after I was one of the top students in school.3 -
The best part about home office isn't that you can fart without co-workers getting annoyed. It's that you can even use a lighter on the fart to see whether it will burn.4
-
Nothing like waking up to racist messages from a client that isn't even under contract yet, guess who's getting flagged and muted.5
-
Think about it:
It wouldn't be a real "bug" if it needed a 200 line fix. These little insects are so tiny they can easily hide even behind a misplaced apostrophe.
(In response to people getting upset about 1 line being enough to fix a 3 day problem)2 -
Most toxic work culture ?? oh boy where do I start.
Getting verbally abused and physical threats over bugs found in production.
All kinds of office politics going around where everyone openly admitted not liking others in other departments.
Your day's salary gets taken away if u are late by even 1 min. And no overtime pay and no you cannot say no to that either or end up getting laid off.
Company brags about giving their employees their salary on time.
Only the devs who have lasted more than 10 years in the company will be heard.
After so many job switches I managed to find one where I get to WFH and pretty much face no toxicity from others.8 -
Look, icon pack. We need to talk about devRant. You're getting to that age where you need to be respectful, especially towards such a wonderful app. Could you maybe go to the effort of having some icon, even if it's just a simple one? Thanks.3
-
I swear, the next person that unplugs my computer while I am doing work IS GETTING HIT OVER THE HEAD WITH MY KEYBOARD.
To even think that you would argue and say it is my fault for not moving when this is the first time that this has happened is absolutely fucking absurd and abhorrent.4 -

Only 7 of the ~200 Routes are named. The former dev just created URLs within the views with the url() method.
#4.1
There are just GET & POST request. Even though stuff is getting edited or deleted.

I don't even care about getting upvotes with rage rants. It's just very nice to have a place where I can out all my rage and anger and where people actually understand me instead of staring at me like 'woah, calm down'. I feel like I'm actually understood here, something I don't often have irl. This is why I f*cking love devRant.1 -
I'm scared like a kid!
Next week , I'm getting my new medicine as a serum which is full of side effects : fever , headache , ...
And because bradicardia is one of them (several people died cause of this !) , I must be in the hospital under observation for 24h (actually 24h coding ) .
Hey i know it's stupid !
I know even if my heart stops beating i won't die in hospital (i hope so)
And i'm not a nervous guy!
I'm getting back to my code maybe that helps 😸4 -
!rant I'm beginning my nerd project of getting my IBM 5150 to the internet via my raspberry pi and a terminal emulator. Oh and the IBM has a 4gb (yes gigabytes) HDD in the form of a compact flash.
The pi is a model B. Even as an older pi, look at the difference in size versus performance!
The 5150 is 4.77 mhz
The Pi is 900mhz12 -
I didn't used Windows for a while,
and now I remember why...
that file is a .gitignore.
Windows is getting even worse day by day.9 -
The hardest part about writing an app is getting anyone to find it :( on that note, please help? <3
If you have little ones I promise they'll enjoy it! it might even get you an hour or two of quiet coding time.
Tap the top bar on the main menu that says 'My First Puzzles' ten times to get prompted for a secret code (3hfazJUD) to unlock all packs free :)16 -
When you keep getting errors even though you're sure that you fixed the problem. Then you realise Chrome still uses the cached JS, no matter how many times you press CTRL + F5. Conclusion: disable the cache in the Dev panel.

I am conducting technical interviews for about 10 years now.
I swear to god, the applicants keep getting dumber and dumber.
Getting more and more ashamed to talk about data structures, design patters or even the most basic algorithms, everyone with a graduation badge from udemy is now a software engineer. Fuck this shit.17 -
I'm so fucking upset with this shitty iPhone. I can't believe there are people who are actually *paying* real money for this crap. Thankfully I am getting paid to use one, otherwise I would flush it in the toilet (but then even the toilet would reject it).9
-
Alright, I've had it. I was scrolling through Walmart when I saw a kititchen utensil holder with a BLUETOOTH SPEAKER? Who needs this? It probably doesn't even sound that good. I am getting tired of people slapping a Bluetooth speaker in random objects. Someone gave me a Bluetooth flower pot for Christmas. Why do you need a bunch of low quality speakers in random objects? I don't get it.13

Anyone else really struggle with motivation?
Time was back when I was a fresh dev that I couldn’t stop coding, it’s all I ever wanted to do.
I think doing it for a job has sucked the fun out of it, and unless I’m getting paid (and even then), I find actually getting down to it is really difficult.
I’ll start looking into making something, perhaps get as far as opening the IDE and then just nope’ing and bingeing YouTube / gaming / Netflix instead.6 -
Oh don't worry I just wasted a whole day, it's not like I had homework to do, projects to finish and VM's to install and I busted my sick ass trying to make it all work on my Linux machine which is now tainted with software I didn't even want to install and useless docs while having a 105 fever. It's all fucking worth it because at the end, of the next day, oh wait...you didn't even install the updates properly, fuck you windows! I swear the first thing I'll do after graduation will be getting rid of you!!5

WTF Woke up this morning and found my email used to register to a website called fiverr.com!!
What is even worse is that at the end of the email where they have that section of: this email was sent to ..., the name is random letters
Even more ironic that website does not allow access from Lebanon ....
I think it is time to change my email, been getting a lot of spam into my inbox lately, though Gmail has a good spam filter :\6 -
Working on a side gig - an online clothing store - just finished implementing the cart logic, need to set up both PayPal and mobile money payments plus make sure the whole UI is responsive - fucking images! This is all needed by tomorrow... I haven't slept since Monday, just getting back home from a long day at work and did I mention that the client is also expecting to see a custom blog that I haven't even begun working on...
Fuck12 -
In the pandemic era i have become allergic to delivery fees. Fucking $5 to get pizza delivered? Fuck you I'll take the 15 minutes it takes to go down to the damn restaurant! Pisses me off sometimes.
Maybe it's because i enjoy getting out more since I've started working from home, but tbh i don't even care, because paying $11 to have someone else bring your groceries to you just makes me irate.14 -

Is a bachelor's degree worth it?
Context:
Up until yesterday, I was planning on not getting a Bacherlor's degree related to programming. I'm currently an intern and I believe that they'll want to keep me afterwards. Even it they don't, my old boss has a junior developer position opening soon and he asked me if I was interested.
I think I'm a good programmer, but I'm not here to boast, but rather, I want to know your opinion:
Is getting a bachelor's degree in software engineering worth it?
I know this topic is not new and has been asked in many forums, but I noticed a repetitive trend: people who have the degree say it's worth it and people who don't say it's not.
TL;DR:
Is getting a bachelor's degree in software engineering worth it? Why?16 -
I'm getting convinced that some areas are not teachable. You have to learn it by yourself. Databases (sql), for instance, the teacher never manages to get the class attention. Even I that consider myself a very interested guy can't handle 2 hours of his explanations. I tried to think in a better way he could teach the content but don't really think there is one ..Do you guys faced issues like that in school?3
-
Getting pissed off with this shit. Wouldn't mind but I didn't even fucking subscribe to your bullshit content to be injected into my mail client so fuck you.
-
WhatsApp and Telegram should consider a feature to disable voice messages from all contacts or all contacts but close friends.
I'm getting tired of getting tech support requests from acquaintances I haven't hung out with in years but when these are too lazy even to type and I have to take type and listen to their muttered voice notes I get crazy5 -
Nvidia Optimus sucks ass.
Seriously, getting this shit to run on Linux is a pain, and the pain never ends because you need to run all graphics-heavy programs from the terminal with a specific command, otherwise they can't even fucking detect the video card.6 -
I am an intern getting paid $25/hour for fullstack web development. Their brand new full time frontend web developer, getting paid at least $75,000/yr, just wrote these lines of code:
if(this.ackBy !== null && this.ackTime !== null)
this.acknowledged = true;
else
this.acknowledged = false;
This. Is. Far. From. His. Worst. Code. This isn't even surprising to me. How does this incompetence find work in this field16 -

Great
Updated GPU drivers, turned my PC off while i was getting something to eat and watch YouTube videos in the living room, decided to go work on some project, turn my PC back on, and... Nothing works...
Neither of my monitors displays anything and not even my keyboard turns on... Didn't even get to see the splash screen of my mobo vendor
Why does this shit always happen to me?7 -
I seriously hate email problems with a passion. Like even when I step through every setting, checking things one by one. Everything seems fine, yet my clients email is getting rejected incoming and out and the only error is basically whoops it bounced! pretty much anything could've cause this.. yeah that's very helpful.7
-
Worst thing about being a Dev:
Getting forced by a non dev for a timescale without even being allowed to look at the issue. Then being held to that made up deadline!!1 -
I love getting a fucking email for every fucking change, instead of getting a list of desired changes.
You know what? Fuck this, I'm tired of being the nice guy, I'm not even getting paid for this, and you expect me to do it expediently on a Sunday. I'm done, you can find someone else to piss off for free.2 -
I officially got a call that i start a job from 15th december
That's my first job after graduating with a computer science degree, and it took exactly 421 days later.
This is depressing and sad. Im not even interested in starting a job. I hoped they will reject me just like the other 10,468 jobs. Im not used to getting accepted.
I have to finish my side project within these two weeks asap rn7 -
Am I the only one who isn't getting any mention notification and even ++ count is updating periodically?
Ugh! dR bug count is increasing day after day..21 -
I spent the entire freaking day on one spec — one! — and I still haven’t gotten it to pass. Or fail. It’s still just breaking. Even the simple crap is breaking, so getting the actual complicated things I need it to do working? Bloody pipe dream (whatever that means).
Just. Goddamn this system is complicated and poorly designed.
And no, before you ask, of course there is no documentation.
I want my day back. 😡4 -
More work-related than dev-related:
- Saying "yes" to extra work more often than necessary.
- Wanting to do everything myself and not delegating enough.
- Getting too stressed out.
- Avoiding conflicts and confrontations (even necessary ones!) and not being assertive enough.
- Overthinking everything.1 -
A rant partially inspired by our favorite angry German.
Are you fucking serious? Why the fuck even publish the stories to your fucking website if you're just going to beg me to download your shitty app?
Why don't you download yourself getting fucked by a chainsaw? Now THAT I'd download you fucking assholes.2 -
Does anyone else get crippling fear anytime your boss wants a 1 on 1 meeting?
I always assume I'm getting fired and panic over it..even though so far that's never happened.12 -
Does anyone else feel you have to do the coding part of development outside of office hours, because the interruptions + even anxiety of being interrupted prevents you from getting into the zone? If I have free time at the weekend I can get into work coding and it's great - I'm so productive - isn't this how work would want me to be 5 days a week? And yet, somehow, the work environment doesn't allow it.6
-
So TripleByte ended in rejection though they gave very detailed feedback and specific areas and even resources to look at. 👍
But it seems I'm not going to be able to escape algorithms in interviews so I'm not getting a new job anytime soon, even in tech.
So the only thing left to try in order to get my cake seems to be joining an open source project. -
iOS11 is so buggy that it is actually ridiculous. How does a company that is worth so many billions of dollars manage to release such patchy software. Hang your head in shame Apple. If anyone hasn’t updated from iOS10 yet, hold on till iOS11.0.1
And this is without me even getting into how horrible the dev experience with Xcode has been so far 😡17 -
Dear game developers of mobile games,
Please stop making EVERY FUCKING GAME dependent on having coins AND gems that you have to pay REAL MONEY for to oftentimes even keep playing! Or worse still you are kept at a basic level if you refuse to spend!
It’s boring, annoying, and your game is not worth spending like $100 on before getting bored and moving on.
And don’t get me started on ads!!
FUCK RIGHT OFF!!!16 -
Hey guys, Been a while...
Quick status update
Moved out of my parent's house
Now a lead backend engineer at a crypto exchange.
Getting offers from startups without even applying, just referrals
Still underpaid by global standards but very comfortable locally.
1year+ of financial stability
Lots of motivation from the lovely people here when I started out, I'm grateful1 -
What are you all planning on getting on Black Friday/Cyber Monday? I've pinched pennies all year and saved up just enough to only be able to afford 35% or so of the cost of being beaten in a local dark alley. That's not even what I wanted, but still.16

I hate using the phone. When dealing with urls, email addresses and lists of changes/fixes all day, this is the least accurate and efficient way of getting information to me. Especially when I'm in the middle of doing things and get a call from a boss. I rarely even answer calls from the bosses.
My boss gave my cell to a vendor to get some urls. For 3 days I've been getting voicemail about sending some urls via email. I sent the urls on day one to the first person. 2 other people from the company have called me requesting the same thing. Why does any of this warrant a phone call. A quick paragraph email would solve all of this. I shouldn't even be talking to these people. My boss could have given the urls when he talked to them the first time. They call him when they can't get ahold of me.
At this point, I just want to be as difficult as I can be to continue wasting all of their time for being difficult and wasting mine.3 -
There's simply not enough time in a lifetime to master everything one would like to master. And it's even worse in technology, where by the time you're getting close to being good at something, a newer technology is pushing already to replace that one. WTF!?3
-
Keeping myself from getting bored af at work. I am a backend engineer doing mostly frontend. And right now it ain't even the interesting stuff. I am merely passing photoshop files to static displays.
Kill me. Every once in a while I do maintenance on Java and PHP apps, but still...bored.....more Rails or Django please -
wk22| Tom Scott,
I just love watching his videos. Its always inspiring and getting me into a somewhat good mood.
Even the non tech related ones.2 -
It was fun to stay home last week, this week the isolation is starting to get to me. Plus I'm PMSing. Somebody should come and hug me... 😢
Been getting really cold chills lately, so I'm not even sure if I got the damn virus.
You guys, please make a vaccine soon. I need to get out and socialize or I'll go insane. 😖7 -
Signet, the google auth library, is somehow throwing a DivideByZero error, despite the only math in the file being linear back-off (`sleep retry++ * 0.3`). Also, the line it’s getting thrown on very specifically throws an entirely different error: a Signet::AuthorizationError.
What is even going on?
Also this worked yesterday.
🥺10 -
Fuck my boss.
He's making me do non-dev work that I'm absolutely not qualified to do and he's even writing to me on Slack to make me do some of it outside my working days.
I'm getting so fucking anxious whenever I'm trying to work with this shit because I have no fucking clue what exactly am I supposed to do.
FUCK14 -
When you get a summer job at the university to improve internal tools and asking your guarantor why the crappyness of his code is evident even to a noob pythonista like me and getting the answer like "I'm writing this only until it does what I want" kinda frustrates and demotivates. I'm sure this is NOT how things should be done.1
-
There was a time when backend engineers used to make fun of frontenders and tell them 'you arent a real software engineer', nowadays frontend is getting so complex and cool that even backenders are now starting to learn frontend. I am so happy that because of new tech and frameworks frontend has gained such a massive respect.26
-
I have finally decided to stop helping people setup a proper machine learning environment inside of their machines with Proper GPU support.
I-fucking-give-up.
Goggle Colab, EVERYONE is getting dey ass sent to Colab. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK about privacy and shit like that at this fucking moment, getting TIRED af of getting messages about someone somehow fucking up their CUDA installation, and/or their entire machine (had one dude trying to run native GPU support through WSL 2, their machine did not have the windows update version 2004 and he has on an older build, upon update he fucked everything up EVEN THOUGH I TOLD HIM NOT TO DO IT YET)
.......fuck it, I am sending everyone to Colab. YES I UNDERSTAND THAT PRIVACY IS A THING and Goggle bad and all that jazz......but if you believe in Roko's Basilisk then I AM DOING THEM A FAVOR
I work hard to get our robot overlords into function, let it be known here, I support our robot overlords and will do as much as possible to bring them to life and have me own 2b big tiddy with a nice ass android.
I should also mention that I've had a few drinks on me already and keep getting these messages.5 -
Positive story ahead.
Had to try and make a new system on my own in a company with no tech staff. I was scared shitless of the responsibility. About a year later we got 2 new devs and people are somehow paying for our very flawed and incomplete mvp.
It's fulfilling and fun. Taking something from zero and suddenly having an actual application with customers.
The other 2 engineers are fun and we talk shit while coding and teaching each other. We also study new tech every day to keep getting better.
I'm even getting some stocks soon.
Long road ahead but honestly, life's good. -
when you let your sister use your laptop for 10 minutes to print something and you can't even start without getting a BSOD after that1
-
I work with J2EE every day, especially Spring and Spring Boot.
I like it very much but when I am home I love tinkering with C++ (even tough I am a beginner in this language).
Is anyone else like this? It's like C++ has a misterious charm for me, not sure why. I also enjoy haskell and erlang, but keep at getting back at C++.7 -
Fuck it..
What’s the point?
Why do we care about a point at all?
Why do we even try to make sense out of it?
I’m religious but if you think about believe long enough that’s a point to question as well.
I guess the 2nd lockdown is getting to me.
I’m extremely introverted but this I too isolated even for me.
In the the 1st lockdown I made it for 3 weeks, now I’m breaking after 1.5weeks....6 -
Me at promotion interview (modtly a formality) last year
Q: why do you want to be promoted?
Me: so that when I say something, people (team mates) will take me more seriously
Now: either nothing has changed or I'm getting ignored even more6 -
Ohhh, I get it. Apple thinks it isn't getting enough money from us by selling us one iMac, so it wants to sell us a second one by making the first one's memory physically non-upgradeable via soldered memory even though the software says it _could_ be upgraded.2

Well after a few really downer and shitty weeks, I think I just struck gold...
First I had trouble getting a new job but was contacted personally for a full time position as a printer and copier serviceman which entrails me getting my own company car, new phone and maybe new laptop and the same day I got a call about my phone that was getting repaired, I was expecting to pay around $400+ for the repair,. nope, the repairer paid for a new phone and gave me a brand new one back, even got the latest model revision too!
Shit turned around quick for me! :-D2 -
Working in a organization that hire people that don't know what they doing and can't ask a question correctly...
HELP WE'RE GETTING AN ERROR IN OUR CODE WHILE TRYING TO GET DATA FROM YOUR DB... PLZ FIX IT
WTF IS NOT WORKING, WHAT ARE YOU QUERYING, WHAT IS THE ERROR?
**Sends a SQL query but with ? for all the parameters**
WTF..... U PPL ARE IDIOTS.... CAN'T EVEN ASK A QUESTION CORRECTLY OR PROVIDE NECESSARY INFORMATION... CLEARLY YOU HAVE NO IDEA WTF UR DOING..
EVEN GOD CAN'T HELP YOU... -
To any CEOs that berade there employees for only getting something 99% correct even though the team is less than 3 weeks old, FUCK YOU. That shit is not motivating and you just fucked up any motivation your employees had for being excited to build your product.3

Fuck Google Chrome cache.
For almost an hour, sat and tried to make changes to a react UI but unfortunately nothing's changing. Started to worry and doubt myself.
Even thought of getting myself the yellow duck! But fuck no , little did I realise that Chrome "intelligently" fetched my page from cache even though I was using incognito! Had to re-open the browser to realise that.
How did I find out you ask? I thought why not fucking open the same page in Mozilla . Why? Because why not?! But I still can't believe that I wasted a whole fucking hour due to that piece of shit called cache!19 -
Providing hosting and site management services to clients was the best decision Ive ever made. Now they don't get access to their websites until I get paid.
Getting a managed dedicated server was an even better decision. Allowing me to focus on the development while a professional team takes care of my clients security.3 -
This will be my last project ever with WordPress. Seems like they added a site "customizer" (wysiwyg) which looks fancy and all, but after a few minutes configuring options the customizer starts lagging, fan starts getting louder, CPU & RAM go up so I do some profiling on that page:
Full layout repaints on every mousemove event, mem usage starts at 125MB and goes up up up to even 200MB while staying idle.. wtf? How did this even get shipped?2 -
When some other team wants to blame us because they're getting a HTTP Status Code 0....
That's not even a valid status... IT MEANS YOU ABORTED THE REQUEST AND KILLED THE CONNECTION...
OH STILL OUR FAULT... WELL DO U KNOW ABOUT NETWORK ISSUES AND SERVER OVERLOADING WHEN U SPAM IT WITH TOO MANY REQUESTS?
OH YOU RETRIED? HOW DID YOU RETRY? BETTER NOT BE SPAMMING US WITH MORE REQUESTS...
EVER HEARD OF TCP/IP BACK OFF LOGIC....4 -
Spam assassin kills most of the spam I get before I see it. It works pretty well. However, I started getting a fuck ton of spam from some asshole on a Turkey server. You cannot forward spam to the gov anymore so what to do (They use a honeypot. Apparently it doesn't catch everything.)? Well I got the abuse email account address for the server. Then I went into my servers spam filter for the email address I am having issues with. Then I redirect the email to this abuse email address. Then I delete it from the server. This makes it so my email client never sees the message and I automagically notify the abuse account. If the abuse account is owned by the spammer then he is just filling up his own server with shit.
Anybody else have fun or interesting ways with dealing with spam the regular filters don't catch?3 -
I started getting into .net core.
I am researching VB.NET as well as C# even though I already know C#.
And I am using a light theme.6 -
I’m getting fed up of working from home. I now get changed in the morning and wax my hair to feel like I’m going to work, even if I have no team meetings!2
-
Just pulled the trigger on a Librem 5 pre-order. I'm super excited. Android was getting shittier with every release, and ios is even worse(to me), so I was getting distraught about my next phone.5
-
Come on devRant! I’m getting really annoyed when clicking on rant that has [read more] at the end since it is a gamble to kill this iOS app you have made. Every ~5th click I get app terminated. Then after I reenter the app, I lost where I was. Thats why I ++ all the rants I have read, even those who don’t deserve it :), so I can scroll quickly and see which are not ++’ed.3

By now I'm about a month into my first job, and I've gotta say: working full-time kinda sucks. Even if I'm enjoying what I'm developing, 8 hours is still way too long to try to focus on one project. I could get more done in a productive 4 to 5 hour stretch than I've been getting done in the whole 8 I'm here. I guess that's part of the allure of freelancing though.5

What the absolute fuck is this!
Fucking bash needs to get its shit together with its fucking strings.
I don't fucking know why str1 + var2 = var2tr1
Like who designed this fucking bullshit!
I've spent the past 8 hours today counting all my ' and " and making sure everything is getting passed correctly.
And how do you even google this shit anyways!
And why the fuck is the official suggestion from the bash FAQ to load everything into an array and to call it with "${ARRAY[@]}"
WHO THE FUCK DECIDED THAT WAS READABLE!!
AUGH!!!
In case anyone was wondering. It didn't work anyways.
I think I'm done for today... I can't anymore...
for anyone wondering. This is bash getting executed by nodejs with execSync()
and those tokens are temporary and only exist on my dev machine. Sorry for getting your hopes up.11 -
another big applaus for windows 10 update getting stuck and fucking up my whole GRUB!
I'm not even able to boot from live cd or select OS by UEFI anymore.. -
During one of our typical 1on1s, my boss thanks me for my hard work these past few months, and said I'd be getting an almost 10% raise - I didn't even ask for it! 🙏1

Getting sent home from work because I fucked my back and I've never hated sitting down so much, so painful...
Won't even be able to sit at my desk and code :'-(4 -
When you get the big enter button & can't stop slamming your fist on it.
So I'm a junior candidate & keep getting senior , way senior job reqs. There's no way you can put job preferences on Dice so I had to put "Jr/Entry Level only" at the end my name lol & still keep getting these.
I think they don't even look at your resume. Just blast out emails hoping they get something.
Its like shooting a rifle in the sky all over & hoping you've hit the target.1 -
My boss: now that the other project is stable, you can start working on this new one. It has to be built from scratch in Angular.
Me: is there any particular reason we have to make it in Angular? Last one in React+Redux worked very well and I am getting used to it.
My boss: Just to give it a try.
And Angular steep learning curve is not even the worst part. Lack of design and direction is.2 -
I'm a 18 year old student doing IT Management and ATM I have group assignment that the group wants me to do alone, its not even 8 AM and I'm already drinking a double espresso and I'm very close to getting a beer3

Know what really grinds my gears? The fact that at many companies, PM's and QA people aren't required or expected to have even a basic level of knowledge, making communication pretty unpleasant. Even having a grasp of relevant vocabulary would make things so much easier.
Combine this with the bedside manner of a barn-raised sociopath, an ignorance of human and technical capabilities in general, and we have several good reasons to stay at home "sick". What the hell do I keep getting myself into?2 -
Months on this project and it STILL doesn’t work. Way too many links in the communication chain and everything is getting lost in transmission and in translation because of foreign language barriers.
All of this will be my fault when it fails, even when it’s provably actually not. The joys of being the single wringable neck.2 -
Dear lord! Why is it so hard to get this to work! Anyone know if its even possible to run lambda expression on JSP? I made sure everything is running on Java JDK 8. BUT IT DOESN'T WORKKKKK. I keep getting "Lambda expressions are allowed only at source level 1.8 or above"2
-
Someone please kill me.
I'm sick of myself.
A few days ago in the prize distribution for a past coding contest, I denied my prize and eventually accepted after fucking around a bit.
Now since two days, I'm straight forward wasting my time. My grades are going down exponentially and I'm involving neither in CUDA (which a started just a while ago) nor I'm getting into studies and even getting in competitive coding.... Fuck me!!!!!! -
Google is so desperate in getting into video conferencing ....
I had Duo disabled on my phone since day one, today I woke up to see it was renabled and updated to latest version ...
Thinking for rooting this thing and taking back control of my stuff even though its just an old testing phone -_-17 -
PC just crashed midgame amd started to bootloop afterwards... i guess my 1070 is not so stable :/ not even getting video signal anymore..3

Front end developer is still getting a ticket even though the security flaw lies in the back-end.
Today, every click of the UI has an overlay of circular progress indicator indicates that there will be a synchronous actions in an asynchronous requests.
1 click = 1 loading state -
I'm so tired I can't even do my personal stuff that I wanted to do instead of actually working. But I'm getting paid anyways. Working is kinda cool1

What I learnt after 3 hrs of debugging for a stupid issue today ?
Lesson 1 - Getting some unknown error even though your code ks right and no error in logs ? Check you SQL version and its rules.
Lesson 2 - phpmyadmin is fuckin shit ass software
Lesson 3- I need to learn JavaScript for backend ASAP3 -
Fuck azure. Not even 2 hours in and this is the biggest bullshit I've seen. So fucking overcomplicated just to sign in and use the azure portal. Keep getting bombarded with random error messages when i try to create any fucking resource. Some tenant error no idea what that shit is. Annoying as fucjk12
-
Entirely my fault. I was getting frustrated that the CSS I had copied and pasted from an old project was not appearing properly. It just wouldn't work. Spent an hour before I lost my shit and closed the IDE, to discover that I was saving the old project repeatedly and hadn't even touched the new project which was serving.

Firefox is getting better and better!
The improvements that came with 57 and Quantum were awesome! And now with 58 there are mayor performance improvements like Off-Main-Thread Painting and a new Javascript caching.
There are even some nice new features like the screenshot tool (in 58 available for the private mode, too!) that are really exciting.
I am looking forward that Firefox could maybe become again what it was back then! It's so cool!5 -
I think I'm getting to the point to where I'm burnt out at my job. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to work. But it is very, VERY boring. And I'm starting to struggle to even pay attention anymore. I know it's important but I'm struggling to care. How am I supposed to do good work when I can barely even focus? Good code is not magic! I can't be barely holding my eyes open and expected to be worth anything.
I'm also still technically a junior developer which I have some issues with >_>6 -

As a company director that’s just starting out down my freelance journey, I still find it so scary taking money out of the business, even though I know I have the money to replace it.
The spectre of getting my taxes wrong even though I’ve got established accountants looking out for me is insane. -
Is there a thing like getting shadowbanned from downvoting on devrant or people just running bots that automatically upvote them if they hit negative upvotes?
Whenever I downvote anything thats at 0 upvotes (for ex. even spam that just didnt get noticed, where I cant report it on desktop), it instantly gets nulled, even on the most hidden and old rants.
I dont think theres always a registered user per every single rant out there at any given time that upvotes somebody. (often very deep down the comments)13 -
I know I'm getting old from small signs like:
- I like mentoring newcomers even fresh graduates, explaining them everything they have to know, answering all of their questions if I can (I had some really bad mentors before as newcomer)
- These newcomers always learns faster than I expect and shortly they works faster than us
- On the other hand senior members asks my opinion about some decisions or technical issues even if I barely know more about that topic. (Did I look experienced somewhat?)
- I hardly take overhours and I discourage fresh graduates to do. (I did enough overnights already in my life)1 -
How do you ask a co worker about their salary? Heard from one of our new hires that he asked for considerably more than what I started at, but I'm not sure if he was referring to his base salary or total value of compensation. It would boost my confidence considerably if I knew what I could be asking for. Hell even getting that as a starting would be quite a step up.18
-
I just want to say it annoys the shit out of me that my B.Sc. Bachelor's degree in CompSci isn't enough for (ignorant) employers.
Now I have to waste time getting certs in fad languages (even though I did projects in them in college) just so I'm 'marketable' again. Man, f*** this bs.
Ridiculous requirements nowadays!9 -
When you're so antsy about getting the eff out of your current job and find a better one that you can't even think properly and do your tasks anymore...
-
Idk why but it feels like lately i've such a pessimist approach to any new-tech (barring languages)
Any new framework or wrapper or CI/CD handler and without even seeing beyond description my instinct goes "fuccccccccck this, I hate it, it'll break things"
I wonder if theres a way to fix this mindset T__T or am I just getting old idkkk6 -
Just keep getting the dumbest tickets from a client as a Frontend dev.
I told them I am a backend and even my contract says backend but I made the mistake to help them with some themes.
So fucking ready to take other interviews where I don't have to deal with bullshit colors and fonts anymore.2 -
Finishing my degree after moving to a foreign country alone, while also working as a dev part time.
I recently moved to another country and switched jobs, and even though I'm getting stuff done, I feel like I just don't deserve the job. It just feels surreal that I made it so far and it just feels like dumb luck sometimes.2 -
At this point, even tho it won’t work out, I’m thankful for getting huge crushes, it is a truly unmatched feeling 😌 and it makes me realize I have emotions. Yayyy1

To my friend who will (hopefully) never see this:
If everything is a "Pain in the Ass", why even bother?
Please. You used that phrase 3 times today on various subjects. I'm getting a feeling that it really isn't that hard.4 -
EVERY COMPANY IS STRAIGHT UP REJECTING OR GHOSTING AFTER GIVING A TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENT.
I am just tired of this at this point. I have been unemployed for over two months now. I have been constantly applying to every opportunity that I see within my limits. I've also reduced my salary expectations by significant margins.
I'd have understood if I was getting rejected after the initial screening / technical interview. But I am not even getting there.19 -
I'd probably get laughed at for even mentioning "php"..
But what is the best framwork for getting started with PHP to build some complex site?
I have seen some here talking good about either codeignitor or laravel. Not sure.17 -
Why the hell are senior engineers coming to me me to debug and figure out issues? I don't even own this code..why should I care? Does your brain stop working as soon as you see the stack trace leave the code you have written? You are getting paid more than I do so go figure it out yourself. Why are you asshats even getting paid more than me? How did you even get there if you can't debug? Again why am i getting paid less than these asshats7

Why do people even care to get Microsoft Developer Certificates?
Like, getting Indian citizenship is a little bit faster..2 -
Had to explain for 30 minutes to a consultant why:
1. registering a the container in the container.
2. writing abstraction for the container to use the abstraction of the container internally.
3. doing service locator thus hiding dependences.
4. having your business logic code know about DI.
5. writing log4net in a massively over complicated manner just because you didn't read the fucking manual.
6. coping code from github into our source.
are just wrong. -

Even if I don't like a rant that much - if it's getting a lot of ++ and is close to 175 (maybe like 150) I always give it another one to give it that little nudge. I'm just that kind of a guy.3 -
Docker.
Even the getting started tutorial didn't worked correctly. It basicly ask you to run commands and fails to execute. I also banged my head to wall few times while trying to connect my dockerized application to database container.12 -
Fuck off git!
Why the fuck is a simple "git status" getting stuck? Is it even gonna return something by the end? How long am I supposed to wait?
Ffs 😡😡😣26 -
So I broke my beloved Fedora Dist. instead of doing a little "sudo chmod -R 754 ./" on a development folder, I did it on root folder ( / )
Now, OS crashed, and I'm getting infinite loops when booting.
But I'm not even mad. I'm impressed :o7 -
Working with a group on a startup idea. We have weekly Google chat meetings with the full team and sometimes me and the other two founders have side calls. Our group is getting bigger so the weekly is getting longer so the 3 of us were talking about ways to make them more efficient. One was, background distractions like TV, random people talking in bg, kids...
So then yesterday the 3 of us went over a different topic and the guy who had brought up the distraction issue was in the bathroom shaving and trimming nose hairs the whole time. He kept asking questions about the agenda which we all had access to. I shouldn't even care much. I drink through the meetings anyways.2 -
Reading all your rants I'm glad my parents always supported me. They even helped to pick a good university and paid my dormroom all 6 semesters. I'm the first in the whole family who got a degree at university and I think they are very proud I have a stable job and a good income.
Though I doubt they know how rare (good) programmers are here and how much job offers I'm getting each week 😄 -
PMs are getting to me so much and ruining so much in this industry that I'm considering leaving it. I'm heavily considering teaching instead. I don't need someone who doesn't even hold a degree in a related field telling me what to do, giving me shit, and telling me I'm wrong. I have a masters in this, you assholes.8

The feeling of preparing for an exam by reading the entire book, doing every exercise in it, doing all previous years' exams and then getting to the exam you failed and realizing.. You still have no fucking idea where to even start solving a single question in it.
Should I even bother appearing for my reexam? I feel like I wasted the past two months studying for it and there's no hope. End me or end my education, right now, thanks.25 -
Man, i hate these Windows 10 updates. Can't even boot up system properly anymore. Over an hour and half wasted with failed update installation EVERY SINGLE TIME!!
Happening 3rd time just today!
Why tf you trying to install update if its gonna fail?!!
I wish I could stop getting Windows 10 updates forever. Guys, Any ideas to block updates other than switching to linux?..6 -
Just found out its 3 day weekend.
I don't pay attention to those dates much.
Even when I look at the calendar I don't see it.
So its like getting a present I didn't expect.6 -
People in SO be like: "I don't understand why I'm not getting any answers. All I want to do is to twist this ORM to do something it doesn't support and I haven't even explained the nature of the models and nested relationships in the question"3

Today I tried teaching a 36 years old student about HTML and layout. My inner self is always restless for practice as an excuse for less talking, but in the end I end up doing even more talking and getting kinda embarrassed.
Good thing is that student understood everything well enough in this 1 hour. I also inserted some good stuff: tips and tricks, conventions mentioned, trends... He even craved for more information.
I'm going to prepare to make further studies more fruitful, because the next synopses won't be as theoretical as today's one.1 -

Staying up a bit later to try to get something to work that you have been stuck on for a while and actually getting it to work is a good feeling even if the solution was a bit hacky.1 -
Why do my brain just stops working on technical interviews? I say the most random crap as an answer even though I know the fucking right one. Well this way I'm not getting a job anytime soon.2
-
God I'm getting tired of the whole TDD culture. I get it, testing is good, but we're getting to the point where several major OSS projects fail on common real-world use cases because instead of worrying about the main purpose of a software, devs only worry about satisfying their artificial tests. And when someone opens an issue, it just stays there for months or even years simply because setup & teardown logic for the required tests would be several times more complex than the actual fix.11
-
You! Yes you.
I'm sure you know a lot of things I don't, even tho I have a pretty decent education and job.
Universal justice wouldn't be that I get fired and you get my job. You getting a (better) job would be universal justice.
So I wish you best of luck.1 -
Spent over an hour on a shell script that wasn't working properly. I use it, works perfectly. Every time cron executes, does nothing, not even log an error.
It took me that long to realize that the user I was getting the cron to run on didn't have permission to write to my log file... You would think I'd realize this when my error scripts didn't log...
(on that note, the Bandit games at OverTheWire have been awesome refresher on getting back into the swing of linux - highly recommend) -
I asked the guy to make changes to this file that amount to 2 lines of code, not even, just 2 numbers increased by 1.
2 months later I'm getting all these complaints so I finally go look. 200 lines of code changed! I don't even get it but I sure get to fix it! -
I often struggle with procrastination, finding myself getting lost in TikTok and YouTube shorts for hours on end or even staying in bed doing nothing, even when I have important deadlines to meet.
Have you attempted to overcome procrastination before? If so, what approaches have you found effective, and which have not worked for you?6 -
40 minutes into trying to switch my Apple hbo account to my supposedly ‘free’ AT&T account... I hate Apple... fuck you... I hate ATT... I hate HBO... I don’t even really want to watch this stupid super hero movie... even if it might have an interesting political angle...
Oh. It worked. Never mind. Everything is fine. The dopamine covered up all of the anger and life can just keep on getting pushed a few inches a day until I slide off of the edge of the earth...3 -
Somewhat mild take: Java actually isn't even that bad tbh.
It's getting considerably more hate than it deserves. Yeah, it has things that make it suck and it deserves some of the shit it gets, but so does every other language. It has its advantages and it has its disadvantages.5 -
I just love getting asked about tasks that I had no idea that even existed because no one told me.1

Just getting a pizza, can't help but get annoyed by the jittery as fuck newsticker, they didn't even get the encoding right....
(Yes our POS software has 60fps jitterless hardware accelerated fully utf-8 encoded newstickers before anyone asks me to do a better job)2 -
To all the people who use laptops for coding, what are the most important things to look out for when getting one. As a desktop user, all of these machines seem underpowered and overpriced.
Im mostly aware what I need to get regarding hardware inside, but when it comes to displays/keyboards/mousepads(does anyone even use that?)/size/io, I am preety clueless.11 -
I just started on a Laravel project for a customer. Damn I’ve got a hate/love relationship with that thing.
I fucking love how fucking fast development is it in, even for fairly complex tasks, amazing.
I fucking hate how goddamn fucking slow development is when you get an error, as that shit is near impossible to debug, and you keep getting weird exceptions that you just need to know what means. -
Getting hard time to understand std::vector and even more confusing with multidimensional vector.
Going back to array. 😪4 -
So the international shipment I was waiting for and was really excited were not the devrant stickers and was this useless and huge azure poster. I am crying. I was really looking forward to those stickers. What am I even supposed to do with this poster? Also I just realized I did not recieve any confirmation from devrant that I was receiving those stickers so that means I am not getting them. Why god why? @dfox please help me.1

I feel retarded...
After getting a new hard drive late at night bcoz my old one went kaboom, I put it in the case, wired it up but it wouldn't work, I tried connecting it to different SATA ports with different cables etc.. This went for 20 minutes and then I realized that the drive wouldn't even start spinning, then I discovered I hadn't connected it to the PSU. Fuck my life and fuck my retardeness. -
Getting so comfortable in a language/framework that you do everything with it. Even if you have to shoehorn the hell out of it for a purpose it's not made for.4

This whole GDPR, cookie law thing is really getting annoying.. Every website you load:
A wild large popup dialog appears, reasons this and that, options this and that, click next, are you sure, yes, yes,..
The dialog itself is annoying, but it's even more annoying if it pops-up 10 seconds after you've already scrolled and are reading stuff.
Am I the only one who didn't care that I got tracked and whatnot and analytics stuffs were stored etc?2 -
I played around with game scripts (in C-like syntax) and even wrote my own (well, halfway) before learning some Java at school. Had a bad internship and decided to waste a few years by studying engineering, where I failed everything but programming. Before getting kicked out I exmatriculated myself then I kinda came to the conclusion of "How about doing something that seems quite natural to me?".

Why don’t we make a pathos-filled video about high salaried software engineers suffering in big tech cities due to housing prices?
We can show a man who goes to some $20-30 dinner per plate with his wife and they come home to a studio apartment. They tip generously..
*Sad music starts*
“This is our life in Silicon Valley. And this is our struggle.”
We can even show one of them holding an iPhone 6s and that it starts lagging due to not getting that battery replacement from Apple.
“We can’t even dream about a house here. We have to consider going out of state where there aren’t even tech jobs out there!”
*Even sadder music plays*
But no joke. This life sucks. This is far from the dream life I dreamed off. This is reality.1 -
I wanted to accomplish new things today.
Instead I'm swimming in:
"This worked before"
- No it never worked that way, you want it to, but it never ever ever has done that thing NOT EVEN CLOSE.
"The thing..."
- Wtf is the god damn 'thing'? How could anyone possibly know what you're talking about? How do you go about life like this?
"How come we can't make it do X?"
- Because the code can't read your god damn mind, that shit isn't in the database, you don't update it and your laundry list of minor fixes for one time or non issues has resulted in you getting coded into a maze of stupid custom code so deep you're NEVER GETTING OUT!!!!
"Is your timezone before or after our timezone?"

why.... why on this freaking earth would you go an enable Hypervision on me?
seriously #Windows, you are starting to drive me over the edge.
theres nothing like powering up a centos server - yea not even a DE, (that had no issues yesterday) and getting "VT-x is not available".
the last thing im going to think to look at is you enabling your bullshit despite it was already disabled, -
How we devs hate getting humiliated on stack overflow when we don't get the answer and someone make us feel stupid for even posting the question.
How we also secretly wish for that validation and feel proud when there are more likes on our questions.
No? Just me? Ok cool 👍5 -
I don’t need any awards.
Garbage fundraisers was getting awards. The self-filling water bottle that will never work, the solar road that takes hundreds of years to break even, the “one breath to death” so-called scuba device. Elizabeth Holmes also got awards.
Leave them to yourselves. -
A coworker who is not interested in getting better as a developer and he's a junior btw. Not interested might not be the right word but lazy or even frightened. He likes to give his ignorant opinion on everything, mostly on things he doesn't understand. He's ok to talk to but ignorance shines through. Now thinks that a MacBook will do wonders for him.1

So I work at a monitoring station (yeah not a professional dev yet), so basically our entire day is spent on the phone. Yesterday morning, our phone system broke. Everyone is getting calls from all departments. Even departments they're not in.
As if my job isn't stressful enough as it is, now this fucking thing happens, and whattya know, shit still isn't working today... -
I'm getting addiction sick, I'm visiting my family and haven't had opportunity to use my laptop, I've been 3 freaking days without even using computer, much less coding.1

My biggest flaw when working in IT: I will refuse to prioritize time- consuming work with minimal added value (cf premature optimization, 0.001% edge cases) when I have a backlog of work that will add much more, obvious value and I will not budge to manager or architect power-plays and tendencies to micromanage my responsibilities, even if it may eventually end up getting me in trouble.2

How on earth can you have a good relationship with your client if he can't tell the difference between an App and a website.
Seriously, wtf.
Were not in the "I didn't realize it was an app-looking webpage on Chrome" case, which is fairly common and even normal, if the webpage is designed to behave and look like a native app.
We're in the "I didn't know apps and browsing webpages were different things" case.
Seriously, some people have the ability to fucking use, breathe and even master some technologies without getting to know even the most basic fundaments.
We might stop bettering our UXs. We need to make things more complicated and make users figure out things by themselves. -
Am I the only one getting PTSD from Word? I fell like every time I get a new computer It somehow gets even slower.4

i don’t know how to feel about these c++20 concepts. even though i haven’t seriously written c++ for years, it’s a little sad to see the language i know and love getting so convoluted and lost in modernisation. it’s gotten to the point where i look at a modern c++ code base and all i see is rust. especially the universal trailing return types everywhere, those get to me.19

It's 4:00 AM here, and I decided to go through my old project where I had put my maximum effort, it is a PHP Project, sadly not in production, I had built it from scratch, the sad part is password hashing, I had to go through 3 different files before the actual password is getting hashed, password_hash($pass, PASSWORD_BCRYPT), I am feeling so stupid right now I can't even describe in words, ok bye

If your company starts handing out a book called “What the heck is EOS?”, be afraid. Be very afraid.
It contains analogies like: there’s a table, sometimes seats get rearranged and there’s no seat for you. No seat = you’re getting laid off.
My last company gave out this book. They even sent it to people they had already laid off (but hadn’t reached their last day yet).
EOS = Entrepreneurial Operating System, in case you were wondering6 -
Which php framework is worth getting into? Laravel seems to have most market or should I go with CakePHP or even something else? any info is appreciated (how are the docs, is it hard to find solutions, how is the error handler, how hard is it to learn etc), I am sure people around here have used a good amount of them and can tell their rage or good things about it. 😳8

How to cope with getting cockblocked by coronavirus before job change?
I signed a contract for a job in a foreign country. I was excited for the advantages like better work/life balance, finally getting to linux dev env, friendlier company. But now, I can not even apply for work permit because of restrictions.
Due to already having signed contract already, I completely lost my touch with my current job. I hate it so much that I am having unpaid leaves even though I could do nothing since we are working half team at the same time. Dont tell me to “learn new skills”, I tried, it does not work for me. I am not in the mood for learning.
New company is great that they reassured me I would not lost the opportunity, I would join them whenever I can. So I dont fear losing job but uncertainty kills me. European travel ban was up to 15 May, prolonged to 15 june, which prevents me to apply for work visa. I guess this was the last straw that broke camel’s back.14 -
In coding, projects and life in general, how can i know when should i say
"hey this isnt working, i should probably go and do something else"
and when should i say
"damn its getting difficult but i must not quit, i have to remain focused and consistent even when I don't want to"
?4 -
I need a life advise - pls share your wisdom!
I have my first client located in the US. He wants to pay with a cashier's check and I have no idea how that works. How do you European or even german freelancer are getting paid by american clients?10 -
- I have done this, this and this. I'm an amazing programmer even though i copied it from SO.
- Allright, could you explain this part since you did not write one single comment.
- (insert generic bullshit excuse)
you don't think he's the one getting the internship amd the summer job since he's the loudest? dear god, my fist, his face.3 -
Every Morning I wake up with a subtle headache. It’s not as bad as with a hangover but still like a dehydration headache. I drink like 3 - 4 Liters of Water per day though so it can’t be that.
Any ideas on how to fix this? It makes getting up just even harder than it already is..26 -
Been thinking for a while now about getting into the startup scene and launch my own AI startup. I even got the domain name registered a month ago. Just can't seem to think of an idea that's not already been done.3

Hey guys!
I have a question
When I'm coding sometimes I get sick
I mean this is getting me when I'm worried if the deadline coming day after day, I get nausea a lot
By a lot I mean a lot
I can't even look at my computer screen or even touch the keyboard
Is it only me or it's normal ?!!
I think it's stress13 -
Yeah, I have experience qith qorst CS teacher.
Considering that teacher as function (object) no matter what we pass never give results... It was anti boolean function can't even decide true or false because lack of info and throws any exception even on success..
It was like getting tons of errors when code is 100% perfect -
A new year, a new job.
After a years hard graft learning front end code I finally landed my first dev job!
Even though the job is a while away, there will be nothing stopping me getting there and learning all I can in this industry.
#bosh2 -
That feeling when you fixing bugs in production and add another one that's even worse, so now your getting about 300 error mails for a bug which was 10 seconds online...1
-
I was in uni and the lecturer used visual studio 95 and i had 2015 and kept getting errors.when i asked him what was wrong with my code he just told me look for it i wont tell you.i bet he didn't even know.so i just learn through YouTube and other tutorial sites.

It is quite a hard pick either generally coding with friends for fun or getting my first ever program done completely by myself (and I don't mean Hello world but rather my first small 'project') . But I'd probably go with my first ever program. Even though retrospectively the code is let's say not that great, it was still an awesome learning experience to actually create sth working out of code
-
Hey developer community.
Need to ask you all something.
Do you consider "To be good at competitive programming" or even experienced at that, with some kind of benefit in your fields ? Maybe even that can help in getting job interviews which are rather difficult to score by applying online. Just need y'all two cents. :)2 -
How do i get the motivation to keep working on a job which requires me to constantly edit different excel files , knowing that it will only decrease my chances of getting a better job in tech in the future !? I dont think i can even find jobs which pay well now.1
-
Raging...windows just put out an update which seems to have crippled the killer wireless on an Alienware laptop I'm using. Greeted with "Please wait" on login finally got pass that. No wireless cards detected. Had this been Linux I could pop into single user mode and debug it.
Windows 10 is getting really bad for this. So not factory reinstalling. Think even arch doesn't break this often lol5 -
It's insane that to get a phone with decent specs without getting one that's even bigger than what I have(a 5.5" asus that feels like a behemoth) I had to get a phone that was released almost two years ago. I figure sony will release a new compact some time soon, but the price was right on the XZ2, and it feels wonderful to use a phone with one hand again.4

Blowing out your node modules is not the fucking answer to everything! All I did was accidentally sym link a package. But no you insist that I fucking delete them all even though I am at home on shitty wifi and going to fucking run ‘npm install’ a million times!!!!!!!
Then I did and getting weird handshake errors and you are not able to fucking help.
Fuck you idiot!2 -
Finally finished my exams! Went well, thankfully. I'm just glad I don't have to worry about school for the next three months! :D
Do you guys have any summer projects you're planning on? I'm hoping to get Arch installed on my PC at some point soon. Getting sick of Windows 10. I'll probably be working part time as well, which will be good for money. Might even take a road trip if I get lucky. :) -
I'm not even going to bother fixing this code that sends 3 error alerts per error. More alerts is better than no alerts. At least the damn things are getting caught.1
-
What to do as junior, if multiple seniors (4) aren't in sync with each other. Following different convention on same client's project. Even after 3 years they didn't able come up with seemless infrastrure. The code is getting ugly day by day. No review happens. Is that normal? As they are not in sync, we, juniors are frequently getting confused what to do. What could be done? I'm planning to leave the project somehow. Don't know what to do. 😑6
-
Is there a good place to post code and have people comment on the style or the logic? I'd love to start getting feedback on my code and break bad habits before they become too ingrained. Plus, our first project is a blackjack game, I'm working through it pretty well but I'm a little stuck and I think it's completely because I'm paranoid I'm not doing it well/right (even though I probably am).2
-
I feel stupid when I have trouble calculating how big a UPS I need to keep my NAS from just dying during a power outage instead of safely powering off
Then I just dont bother getting one... and get pissed off next time it happens and the cycle continues
Now I have other stuff I'd want to get a UPS for too and the math is even worse for my tiny brain3 -
Listing my skills:
I have published react-native apps.
I can build an extensive backend/API thing with node.JS/a good framework.(worked on something for my countries national football league during an internship as main/only dev)
I have some experience with c# but havent used it since school.
I have no issue getting into new frameworks/languages, as long as its not PHP.
I have experience working in software teams.
I have experience running my own company(Online store selling airsoft supplies - i quit).
Im working towards getting familiar with Tensorflow 2.0.
I have a Cambridge English assessment certificate at grade C2.
I am currently working(for 0 pay for 50% of the shares) on developing a social media app that uses location tracking on a 20-200 meter scale.
I have ADHD and have been spoken on/warned due to its effects( i.e. forgetting to report progress, getting distracted, needing stimulation so i browse youtube(even have it playing in the bottom corner sometimes), poor communication.
Am i worth anything at all as a developer... im getting pretty depressed due to not having an income at this point... and I dont think anyone will hire me4 -
I'm working on some JavaScript that a junior developer probably would have been able to write a couple hours ago.
Even though I'm getting closer to a solution, I'm definitely still in the "feeling like an idiot" phase because it is probably so simple for a more experienced dev.
At the same time, I think this is one of those things I have to figure out for myself. I can't get all my solutions from Stack Overflow!5 -
Getting pretty sick of proposal improvements to the business I work for to then be knocked back before I even finish/ they finish reading the proposal.
From now on I come to work, do job, if no work available do nothing, go home!!
I'm done!! -
Finite State Machines are awesome! Resume from reboots and automation is possible even on older Powershell versions without Workflow support. Setting state and transitions resuming where it left off is huge for getting PC's set up. Unfortunately can reimage due to no vl reimaging rights but scripting is totally possible...and with it creating it's own scheduled task to run on startup it does what it needs, then reboots resumes and deletes the task when done.1
-
I just experienced that happiness of getting a different result, even if it's still not what it should be.
Far from best feeling in the world, but it's still happiness.1 -
Fuck, I always thought writing websites for Internet Explorer was hard. But have you ever tried to escape Facebook Messenger's dark mode?! That shit is wild. Completely ignoring any settings specifically targeting dark mode and instead fucking up the entire color scheme. Even google, apple and other simple black and white sites are getting ass raped by this shit. WTF.1
-
language confusion is a mess. as a python newbie i am very focused on learning for the last two weeks. now i am not even able to declare my php-variables properly and end up getting errors the whole evening.1

Finished making a snake game in PDF. The standard is deprecated and every other function was broken. Even getting Docker to work in Windows didn't feel as good.4

Android Crash is Fucking Bullshit Ever on this Earth Planet.
I really Hate these Number of Versions and Bullshit Incompatibility between each one.
It is Just a Shit Developed on Java.
The Crash Really Fucks the eyes of Developer.
And Fucking Bullshit Errors are not Even visible, Sometimes the shit goes so worst that it does'nt even give the Line Number where error Exists.
Worst OS Developed for Mobile on This Planet.
Anyone getting into these development i suggest IONIC is Best to start instead of Coding Native Bullshit Android.
If anyone knows how to see the realtime errors besides Logcat and Firebase Error please let me know.11 -
This job will eat me up.
I did not feel good last week due to my vaccine. I really don't know what happened what even after a week of it, I feel week and dizzy.
I couldn't work at all due to all this, and now the senior from my team is indirectly saying that this project is slow. I know it is slow because I couldn't work without getting 13 hours of sleep.
I am scared. I think I do not the element of good developer. I am trying my best though.
But whenever I get these kind of remarks I fail to do even the easiest thing possible.7 -
3 weeks into getting dragged into another MS-stack project, I have already been repeatedly reminded why I decided to invest so much energy in moving my career as far away from Microsoft dependency as possible. Even something as simple as reviewing settings on Azure App Service is a hit-or-miss affair, being completely unavailable for hours at a time at least once a week. Azure Functions are consistently unavailable for at least a few minutes every day. Don't even get me started on "Azure DevOps".
Why the fuck do people still place their trust (and critical infrastructure) in the hands of Microsoft?4 -
Sooooo....worked at a place (which i think was my first rant on here lol) a little while back where, to keep a long story short, was treated like shit and still managed to pull out some magic for them before i left my contract (cos work pride).
Come to new company, it is a consultancy company. The project I worked on at the previous company, they had came (while i was there, i went to the meeting) and done some requirements analysis for them (that weren't even relevant, mostly because the CIO was a tard).
Come to find out today, through the grapevine, that these lot have been claiming that they done more than requirements and actually implemented the full solution and even wrote a case study about the shit they weren't involved in. "Oh look at this GDPR project we completed for this £400M turnover company and all the problems we solved".
More hurtful cos this project I done with no help from anyone, got moaned at every day, got my references threatened, wouldn't let me work from home but anyone else could. Serious, a lesser man would have punched the CIO....repeatedly.
What would you do? I'm getting sick of fighting in every job but also getting sick of never getting any credit for the shit I've done. -
well...
when does this end.
even things that can't be further away from any digital logic are getting smarter now ...1 -
You know it's funny though, sometimes I'd get stuck with a single adamant error to a point that getting a different error from that would actually be a victory. Even though it's still an error 😊😊
-
Best: getting some awesome code buddies, making my first game for my college event
Worst: not able to work and even abandoning a game dev project I wanted to make for 2 years due to college stuff
But I hope i will start working on the game again next year🤞1 -
Any tips on staying focused and not being distracted for a quasi-intermediate programmer? I keep getting distracted by steam games. Even weird shit like installing gitlab community on a VM, thus loosing an hour of time.1

Unable to run internet on company provide Mac book ..fucking. stupid....Tried to remove proxy but not working..Even wifi getting connected and for a second it runs the internet.

Two apps on Play Store have same title...
Searching for one of them...
Won't give desired results, directly jumps to unwanted one...
Have to add something to search that is not even present in title to find it...
How the hell does their search even work? I keep getting totally irrelevant results... Or an irrelevant app shows with no other results...1 -
Can someone please explain the benefits of this in Kotlin:
var x = if(a !=b) {
z
}else{
y
}
Even for a conditions with one line body it looks bad in reading and getting a clue of what does this do.
I mean whats wrong with:
var x: MyObject
if(a!=b){
x = y
}else{
x = z
}
Even in switch cases (or as kotlin calls: when) True one return source, but now good luck finding the last line that is the actual returned value ...15 -
Been getting emails all fucking week like this, even had 4 seperate phone numbers call me up from a private or unknown number, guys, fuck off, please.
Think I need to have a chat to my domain host as to why people are getting my fucking phone number and personal email!6 -
Does anyone else ever get really down when you spend too much time away from your project? I feel myself retracting from society and all I ever want to do is drink coffee and teach myself stuff and work on my game.
It's getting to the point where I don't even want to see my gf and I don't even think about food. I see this happening to me in real time, but I don't want to stop it because I know it's what I need to accel. It's just, damn, it all makes me kind of sad and reflective.5 -
Why did the computer go to the doctor? Was it feeling a bit poorly? No, it had a virus. It turns out even computers aren't immune to catching something nasty. I mean, can you imagine a world where even the machines are getting sick? Oh wait, we already live in that world - it's called Windows.4

I give up on getting Bluetooth LE to run :/
Got a new 14'' Laptop for travel/mobile purpose. It only got like 2 USB Ports so i thought a fine Logitech 590 might be nice.
I am currently using Ubuntu 18.10 and a tried everything..Arch Wiki had some nice tips, but even then i cannot even detect the damn tool, despite many sites saying hcitool -lescan plus gatttool should do the trick, no avail.
This is quite retarded cause i was really looking forwar to do this. I figure it might be hard but impossible is annoying :/
Stupid Bluetooth6 -
I'm in a situation where the more working code I write, the more I'm getting close to get an error EVEN IF the code still works perfectly. (I can assure you it works).
It feels bad.1 -
- Get comfortable with Angular 10, at least to the point where it's not too far skill-wise from Vue 3.
- Getting better at using Terraform, AWS and GitLab, and possibly picking up another cloud provider (like DigitalOcean, Linode or Vultr).
- Being used to the C4 model and being less uncertain about how I can model software systems even if I end up switching from (C4-)PlantUML to Structurizr.
- Progressing on some OSS projects, namely like All Contributors and other side projects I've put on hold.
- Getting a new laptop (when I know which one would suit me more). -
When the way to get a promotion at your company is so bullshit and you need to do a lot of things collectively, but even then you work towards each of those things and ensure you have enough backing of each one, after getting feedback from your manager from the previous session on what type of things would apply, only to then get told manager failed to promote few other people because the higher ups want even more bullshit things and thus he wants even more from you at the same level.
Time to see if any company would take me, before I wanted some salary boost but I might just take one for very small boost as compared to what I wanted before. -
Apparently work in progress submissions of our assignments were graded by the percentage of their completion.
So yeah... there was no way of getting 100% unless you had the assignemt compete. Spoler alert! Nobody got 100%... even if all the assignment criteria were met.
And the best thing is that he got the percentages by asking each student after their presentation...
Now I get why he was boasting so much, that only few of his students get A. -
Fuck those who hate on Mac os and say that they aren't customizable and cost money for everything. Like some days ago I saw this post about how Mac users need money for like getting simple shit done. Tbh most of the ppl haven't even used Mac for dev stuff. And after using Linux I would say MAC IS AS GOOD AS LINUX. (if u use Mac ports or brew as a package manager) and u can even run Linux apps in there without almost any hassle.9

Honest question:
For an open temp role, we are looking for someone that knows and used Angular 1.5 and ECMAScript 6.. yet everyone we have interviewed so far only knows up to Angular 1 and doesn't even know a new version of JavaScript came out, or have never used it before.
Are we really asking too much for someone interested in a temp role or are we just getting unqualified candidates?9 -
I’m a Frontend developer and my wife is Quality assurance Lead. We never tend to agree on things even personal. But with time I stepped up and developed negotiation skills. Now things are getting better 🙂1
-
I don’t mind taking over a project when there is a structure and logic. Normally the problem is messy code which I can work around.
It’s a different story though when there’s model stuff in the controller and views or sometimes views calling controller functions or loading other views. I don’t even know, flicking between files, recompiling and not getting the result makes me agitate because I’m unproductive.3 -
Ok, which datacenter do I have to set fire to, in order to stop these FUCKING PROMOTIONAL SMS MESSAGES THAT I KEEP GETTING FROM MY FUCKING PHONE OPERATOR??
NOW I'M GETTING PUSH MESSAGES TOO?!? BURN IN HELL YOU FUCKING FUCKS!
I WILL BUILD A FUCKING ARSENAL OF FUCKING ROCKETS AND I'LL SHOVE THEM UP YOUR SHITTY ASS AND BLOW YOU UP IN SO MANY PIECES THAT EVEN AVOGADRO WON'T BE ABLE TO COUNT HOW MANY WILL BE LEFT OF YOU.
AND SPOILER ALERT: I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO BUILD ROCKETS, SO YOU BETTER START RUNNING4 -
Getting the word out about your new shiny app:
Posting in relevant communities > Throwing money at Google Ads
Google Ads isn't even using up half of my daily budget lmao1 -
I have not been able to work for quite some time already due to a chronic condition getting worse. Even when I have been at work I wouldn't get anything done due to chronic pain (a literal pain in the ass), so this year hasn't been very fun so far. I cannot sit nor stand for extended periods of time. I just want to be able to work again! :C5
-
Does anyone feel like their boss is always scheming behind your back. They are changing the requirements and rejecting you without even reviewing your work and are too good to attend any meetings. They’re trying their best but wouldn’t ever give you credit when you are trying your best and getting good results. At what point does the micro management and fear of failure make it so you can’t even take the simplest feature without melting down?1
-
Getting ready to start sending out applications for junior dev positions.
What would you suggest should I look into/repeat/prepare for possible interview questions? For example, typical algorithms they might ask me to code?
I already have a list but maybe you have even more ideas to add :)4 -
So, even Brave browser is not exempt from getting a new tab opened out of nowhere for downloading this shitty fuck thing called "MaxAI".
Modern software is really down the gutter.7 -
People talking about getting 100 +1's when I haven't even broken the 50 +1's barrier lol everyone should be having fun here, don't worry guys, stress balls will come 😊

Tips for motivation appreciated...
I can’t get any work done and haven’t been for a few weeks. Even took a few days of.
Just stared at the screen the entire day.
Have no problem getting stuff done on personal projects..2 -
Starting a job. No computer for the whole week with no prospects for when will I even get one.
Doing nothing, still getting paid, but starting slowly and surely to loose my mind...
I NEED TO SEE Code in order to live.1 -
I became familiar with basics after my mom bought a PC and disc with software which included FirstPage. She wasn't *that* angry getting a $100 receipt for the month of Internet I trafficked - oopsie, thatta large price, even after inflation.

After a damn amount of time I've been considering it (a lot of data in there and I'm lazy), I've finally wiped the android clean (dalvik+cache+the rest). Happened exactly what I was expecting:
All in-app errors (even devRant feed) magically disappeared. So, if you experience something like that, don't be lazy and wipe.
Also there's speeding up of the system and other pros of wiping, but those aren't that important like getting rid of errors ^^5 -
I think I have configuphobia.
When you need to setup configurations for like anything, it's always super loosely coupled and can break when you even breathe on it.
Database table columns? Configured once.
Authorization management? Create a user and configure the password and username in the application.
Backups? Configure the network path to backup to.
All these things are so EASY to break!
Maybe I'm overcautious, but I really dislike it.
There are ways around it of course, like documentation and automation, but it's all so much work. And even then it's still loosely coupled.
What do you all do to keep your configs working without getting nightmares?3 -
Why do certain software systems fail on a specific day (Friday/Sunday)? For example, getting error 500 "registration module issues :(" on their part.
Do they have some kind of deployment day then? Even so, this isn't acceptable for today's standards.
Oh, let's cut off our customers from purchasing something on those days. What?
Something leads me to think they're not hosted in the cloud then. Outdated architecture..3 -
New laptop. HP z book. It stopped working so I had to have a new motherboard. After the new motherboard I kept getting BSOD. Got it upgraded to Win 10 (it was supposed to be runing this not 7). Still getting BSOD with the bonus of black screens wanting me to restore. Even better I've gotten No OS found on boot. My work won't let me have a Mac or exchange my laptop. But am I done yet? Fuck you.12

After getting contacted late about a change to a service for another team's deployment, giving me 2 weeks to complete, completed and the department meeting after the team thanked a lot of ppl but didn't even mention me or my team. I literally went to the hospital the night it was deployed to production.

All I want from Instagram reels is cringe creators dancing around producing more cringe,
But no, it has started to show me videos of people getting killed/slaughtered/slashed/shot these days.
I'm not even kidding, everyday it shows me a video of someone getting killed in a car crash, gang wars where someone gets shot in the head, someone splattering their head on the ground falling from a good height.
That too in full 4K quality, no pixelation or censorship.11 -
Seriously saying in my first game (this one) iam getting the feeling like no one would be able to complete all levels ever! They are soo tough it's like i have poured all of my whole day frustration in every level! Just like this one completed just a min ago!
After completing the level I can't even complete it once to checkout properly always have to chest to check!2 -
Getting pissed off with eBay and Amazon APIs! eBay’s is completely screwed and the sandbox site doesn’t even work.
Amazon have great API’s but getting accounts to link and have the right permissions is a complete joke! -

I’m new to using gdb to debug. It could detect the places where I was getting SIGSEGV randomly. But there are also rare cases when the program just gets segmentation fault as soon as it starts, and it when that happens, even my gdb gets frozen and I have to shut down my terminal altogether.
What’s with this ? Is this some sort of kernel error (like Bus error) ? I’m using macOS Catalina and gdb 9.1.2 -
vite-pwa-sveltekit thanks for getting in the way.
I honestly don't get why does this library even exists. If you are going to delegate 80% of the work to me I might as well do 100% of such work.
Fucking useless plugin...2 -

Bluez Sucks!

I have to restart Bluetoothd each time.
Docs are even worse (or inexistent) -
Here I am sitting again to explain to some nice people that it is not my service causing the havoc but the infrastructure.
Always getting cached content when using the public route (private is fine). When I firstly hit something it should cache then I get that content for every url I hit on that service (e.g. Getting the favicon when fetching the html)
Even when I stop the service the public route does still return content. Let's see if they accept that there may be a caching issue 😥😥😥 ah and the service is running in 2 other environments - must be an application problem -
So the restaurant I work for get interns to "revamp" the employee website (says so right on the page). The site didnt work the first couple days they had it up. Then it was fine for a week. Now everyone is getting a 404. I had thought about working as a software engineer for home office, but now Im not sure I want to since they cant even get a website working correctly for more than a week.

FP/Math guy here. Just opened Ionic docs because... anyways. Why am I getting an unusual amount of red flag raising here? Even scared to go on.

Guys do you use strictly Docker or an alternative, I installed Docker desktop, i tried to install nextcloud-all-in-one but i was getting errors and never got success even through the gui interface, is it a better idea to install it in a docker container or not? and if there is way more simpler alternative then what are those choices?1

So I go on scratch (Mild Scratch Programmer), and I see this one person, Who does NOT know how to script or program, even though he specifically states IN HIS PROFILE, that he is a "Professional Scratch Maker", Not even the correct term to describe a "Scratch Project Developer". I literally told him in his profile chat, that the way he described what he was, wasnt the right way and tried to help him update it, and he completely blew up on me and starting getting toxic......God I hate toxic kids.5
